tess is absolutely voidbound. hes a seer of void, inviting understanding through his aspect and going mad because of it, resulting in him succumbing to the whims of 1x1x1x1, the lord of void.

dusekkar is a space player, and a damn good one too. he created paper robloxia dude. we wouldnt have the damn story without him.

the only thing separating him from the lord class imho is the fact that the plot book was granted to him as a wish from sphara, and not something inherent to his existence. hes a potent space player, yes, but most of his narrative power comes from an artefact, leading me to believe hes someone moreso capable of handling his aspect with grace and finesse.

maids start out as relying on others for their aspect, and their challenge is to begin relying on themselves for it (thanks dahni). dusekkar relied on sphara granting him the plot book; now he does all the work himself. well. did, i suppose. until spr happened lmfao . so id peg dusekkar as a maid of space (heheheh made of space. pumkin head)

lanter is a time player because i said so. /lh

honestly? he just gives me time vibes. hes the typa dude whod march inexorably towards doom and he seems like a realist to me. plus he talks a lot about the past and about the future of robloxia, so im gonna put him down as a sylph of time. he understands it and invites creation through it, meddling (telling the player about dusekkars past) and inspiring the player to save probloxia from antagons clutches

rozanda is a thief of light. self explanatory.

wiscara is a witch of light. you cant tell me shes not jade harleys more ambitious, hyperactive cousin. like. be for real. shes kinda like rozanda . wacky but not downright evil

sphara? muse of time, i think. dont ask me why, it just works. she invites time and embodies it passively. shes a walking time capsule dude you cant tell me im wrong. also isnt she literally god also like . + in her death (COUGH really long nap) she invites wacky shenanigans throughout time (past, present, future) etc

antagon is a little shit, but more importantly hes a prince of sorts, taking a very active pessimistic destruction role in spr. im not quite sure what set of aspects he embodies, but im certain he either:

a) destroys life whilst shadowing doom

b) destroys hope whilst shadowing rage

Idk about you, but I believe in the “Problem Sleuth, The Felt, and The Midnight Crew co-Exist in the same universe” supremacy even though it may not be true. It’s real in my heart 😞💖

Personally I like when the Felt are included in the mix! Its either MC and Team Sleuth, or MC and Felt, but rarely all three. Like the idea of the Crew and Team Sleuth potentially working together against a common enemy is too good. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't, right?

This is where I start rambling and its really long, you don't have to read it! I just felt inspired (I even talk about this post)

I also like to imagine the historical innacuracies in the Problem Sleuth universe are due to the Felt messing with the timelines. Tho it's not like their universe was entirely accurate and realistic in the first place (it doesn't have to be), as stuff like innocuous doubles and the imagination realm are a thing that exist and make sense to them.

I should clarify two things:

As a noir artist (aesthetic, NOT values) who's really keen on history I've done plenty of research on the time period that PS is based on for my own stories, and I'm in no way saying that it should be accurate! I just think it's funny to imagine a gang who messes with time and space were the reason why a noir detective knows the existence of Snoop Dog.

I should also say that I apologize if my ideas have already been said or done before. I got no way of knowing what people in the 2010s came up with already (I was 8 when Homestuck was peak in popularity, have mercy). Tho I do have to thank a specific fanfic that triggered my monkey brain into developing a similar concept to what the author did with the Crew (Y'all have made me start reading fanfics again, I hope you're happy). it's Mr Suit and Tie btw.

All being said, I proceed to talk about my silly little universe half inspired by TWAU game.

Before the events of Problem Sleuth it was just Team Sleuth, the gals and Kingpin as n°1 public enemy. All living in a film noir world forever stuck in the prohibition era, and althought the years go by they essentially stay the same. Not until one day stuff not yet invented started to appear out of nowhere, time anomalies that affected sometimes even structures began to happen (Spiderman into the spider-verse type of anomalies), same time as two new criminal organizations began causing trouble.

Again, this was all before the events of Problem Sleuth. So they had time to accept these new changes over the years and grew accustomed to the new stuff around them, using them to their advantage even.

Also similar to GPI creating the universe thanks to time shenanigans, Slick created the city even if he "didn't exist yet" in this universe

As I explained in a previous post, Team Sleuth and other characters from the webcomic are all human in my interpretation (with a few exceptions). While the Midnight Crew and The Felt are just disguised as such. I don't have an explanation why or where they come from, nor do I want an explanation. As @/problemsleuth said "a little bit of supernatural & eldritchness goes a long way in making noir very very fun." and it's SO very true.

But why I find this particularly interesting is because I think it gives a great excuse why Team Sleuth is after the MC and the Felt. We're talking about a new set of characters who all weirdly possess strange abilities that could endanger the public (the MC with their shadow based magic and the Felt with their time shenanigans), and not just common mobsters. I don't think it's unfair for Team Sleuth as they got equally powerful friends and are not entirely incompetent at times. If they could beat DMK, they can beat anything tbh.

I got a lot more to say about the whole "human disguises" stuff, but this post is already too long and it's off topic (my whole rambling is off topic) so I'll leave it up to here.

In honor of 413. Some mspfa i'm remembering: they are old, because I only checked mspfa a little while after discovering homestuck, so I *know* there are better/more ambitious/ongoing or ended mspfa, but I never took the time to check them. One day maybe. Probably.

So. They all are unfinished, such is the way of life.

Be the Sea Dweller Lowblood takes place on Alternia, no sburb shenanigans, only trolls. As the title imply, in this universe the hemospectrum caste are inversed, sea dweller are lowblood, Aradia is the empress, etc. We're mostly following Eridan, but not only: there is also all (i think? or most) troll of the main cast, and everybody is navigating quadrants, various life events, and a starting revolution (alas as the story is unfinished, it stays at a starting point)

Countdown Quest: a sburb session with oc, two kids two trolls. Cool ideas, mysterious higher entities (?) involved, of those 3 mspfa this is the one i would have liked to see the following the most! The rustblood is my fav, I love him to death.

Heartstuck, as the description says, is a dating sim parody AU. Highschool humanstuck with a retelling of hivebent events, though at the start it's mostly playing with dating sim mechanics. Contrary to the two other, the art does not take inspiration from homestuck. Well, at certain times it does. It's a bit inconsistant tbh.

There is another one I only remember bits of, I thought it was Heartstuck, but actually now. It was (I think?) humanstuck, no sburb shenanigans, except the last pages implied that there was in fact some. Those pages were, I think, of Rose and/or other kids looking at the sunset? And one (or is it the same?) where lusii were separated from troll and trying to escape some place. If you have a name for those, please tell me!

Good morning to my new home on the internet???

Now that I've moved on from the god forsaken bird app for good now, it's time for me to figure out how to make this account feel me and get used to all the unwritten rules of this site.

Also gotta figure out how I'm going to be posting and what. The last time I had a Tumblr account was in highschool and I originally planned on making a webcomic with it.

It was called Prolonging Nothing. It was about three teenage kids accidentally causing, surviving, and preventing (time shenanigans) an end of the world where everything is swallowed by a matterless void.

Obviously I'm not doing that. I can't even remember the plot I'd planned out and I'm not even sure my original account is even anymore to take inspiration from, and even if either of those were true I'm not the same person who came up with those ideas anyways.

So what will I do?

Well, I need somewhere to post my art, and now that this place has once again legalized more sensitive artwork, I'm more comfortable posting here. Obviously I can't go all the way as to draw people engaging in intercourse but I wasn't planning on doing that publicly anyway nor was I really known for it in the first place.

That being said,

If you're familiar with my twitter, you might be aware that I wasn't really posting all that much art in the first place despite labelling myself an artist/creative. This is because I lacked drive. Still do, but I'm hoping that the nostalgia of using this site will help push me back into the groove of it. If it doesn't, well...

So what else will I do?

I'm a little bit shy about my interests, and I don't tend to talk much about them. This has always been true of me. When I was younger I used to be big into things like Homestuck and Doctor Who and Gravity Falls but you wouldn't be able to tell unless you asked me. This was despite the fact that all of my friends at the time would not shut up about them and were frankly a bit obsessed

In other words, I sucked at being a fan of things. I didn't participate in fandoms because it felt weird and unnatural to me and frankly I found it kind of cringe. But a part of me was jealous that people could be that carefree about what they enjoy. That they just ignored how other people saw them and just enjoyed what they wanted to enjoy.

This time, I plan to do that. I plan to be the cringe I used to be jealous of.

I'm an adult, and I've realized I don't need to hold myself to these weird restrictions I placed on myself as a teenager that made me think having fun and getting invested in things was cringe and weird and makes you look bad.

I want to enjoy life, and that means trying to undo all of that weird internalized ableism and misogyny and feelings like I need to cultivate an image to get people to respect me.

It's okay to be cringe.

It's okay to enjoy things.

And it's time I allowed myself to be cringe and enjoy things.

I allowed myself to be who I am once and it made me happier than any other time in my life, what's the worst that could happen by doing it a second time?

So, now what?

Now I see how this experiment pans out. I want to make it work, but the culture on tumblr now is entirely different than the culture on tumblr back then. All these desires could be distorted or altered into new shapes that better reflect the times, and frankly I kind of hope they do at least a little.

But I still want to have fun.

The world is going to hell, the economy is collapsing, people are getting radicalized to the breaking point, and I've got a bunch of unexplained health issues that are causing me a fuck ton of anxiety.

I don't want to live in that world or be stuck thinking about all the terrible things happening around me. Frankly I could get hate crimed tomorrow, or one of my health issues could turn out to be as bad as I'm terrified they actually are, or my entire family could die and my neurodivergent ass gets left to fend for herself with no idea what to do, or worse.

Any number of bad things could happen to me and ruin my life. I don't want to think about it. I just want to be happy while I have the chance to be happy, rather than succumbing to the morose nature of the world that we live in.

So I'm not gonna.

I don't have a plan, but this is a start. I'm gonna blindly take my first steps and see where they land me. If where I am at the end of this path is happier than where it began, I'll call that a success.

Even if the world and I should burn, I should at least get to enjoy it until we flicker out into the great dark unknown once again.

I'd make a longer post later about the clear and creative concept associations of Homestuck because I'm so fucking normal about them.

They are easy to identify and easy to mold the world around them. God damn it. I love them.

1. Pool

The Felt, Snowman, Doc. Scratch and the all mighty Lord English are inspired by the game of pool. Almost every antagonist of the story is. And specially, I love how it is played in English and his death via black hole and the destruction of Snowman's universe.

2. Chess

Sburb is essentially a complex version of a game of chess. Kings and queens and expendable pawns. I want to highlight the role of the New White Queen, who started as a humble pawn, finally reaching the other side of the "board".

A super easy but extremely great way of showing a narrative structure. You have some antagonists and some allies over a war field with recognizable movement. Just like Alice through the mirror glass did.

3. Poker

The Midnight Crew of course. And the insufferable troll romance quadrants. The poker concept is more subtle in the story and the in game mechanisms aren't an important part of it.

4. Zodiac

The juicy part. How you make a bunch of characters with strong personalities while keeping a sense of coherence and unified relationships? The zodiac signs gives every troll a personality blueprint and a base for the hemospectrum classes. It makes the background for every troll: Feferi and Eridan submarine existence, Pyrope's laws and justice knowledge (and blindness), Kanaya's virgin/mother theme...

Everyone has a sign to be recognized by. Is pretty clever and pretty simple.

There are other patterns of course, like Hansel and Gretel, Dorothy and the wizard of Oz, the Lucky charms relationships, Catholic bullshit, Codes & Programation universe shenanigans and other ones I'm completely oblivious. If you see another one, let me know to investigate it and make a more complete analisis later.

This is a "story" red by a newbie narrator. The "story" follow the Main Character and his boring life.

MC birth is the "beginning" . And the narrator start to narrate.

And everyone in the universe heard the narrator. (.... ummm universe.... Yes even the aliens hear him.) it's like a sort of telepathic mental voice that everyone hear(and understand ) in their heads.

And there follow weird shenanigans where EVERYONE (gouvernement, adults, alien, kids, animal, everyone) is searching for the origin of the voice.

One time MC is in the same place as Stanley and narrator break his narrating and call for Stanley.)

Inspiration:

- it sounds like a Sims fanfiction because at first the narrator doesn't understand anything that the "characters" are saying, and also the "camera" is following the Main Character (like in the sims) and show his stats

- I'm picturing the narrator as one from The Stanley Parable

- Homestuck. Because a self aware narrator gave me Homestuck vibe.

Author commentary:

In the most fevered days of Homestuck fandom, there were hordes of teens who would roleplay online constantly, casually, for no reason at all, in anyone's direction. They used troll quirks, faithfully mimicked characters, the works. I only bring this fact up now because it occurs to me that this conversation does a great job capturing what it's like when you're minding your own business as Dave is doing, and some rando comes out of nowhere and starts roleplaying a troll at you, and you don't have the slightest fucking clue what's going on, what Homestuck is, or what this annoying child is trying to accomplish. Dave handles it the way I assume many guys would, which is through a vaguely detached series of counter-trolling measures.

Here comes the good shit. Thank god I put this comic in here. What would Homestuck be without award-winning decisions such as this? I mean, aside from respectable. Cool Dude and Stoner Lou was the precursor comic to Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff. And both comics were made specifically to spoof other people's bad comics involving this sort of content. Much like with SBaHJ, I bestowed that creation upon Dave and designated him as the fictional creator of the content that in truth I was responsible for before Homestuck began. Same thing here with CDaSL. Note how Dave's presenting this work in a flashback, casting it as a precursor work to SBaHJ, which he still considers to be a "vision" he is tinkering with, which is roughly true of the IRL progression of this content. (Though I wasn't taking this shit nearly as seriously as Dave is here, on an artistic basis. For me this was ludicrous shitpost stuff taking place on old forums.)

It seems Terezi provides the kernel of inspiration for Dave's next artistic endeavor, SBaHJ. Which also somewhat tracks reality, since originally SBaHJ stemmed from a playful roast of some guy's bad gamer comic, and in particular isolated certain peculiarities about the style, like the strange way the mouths were drawn. That's just how it happens. We all inspire and influence each other, even with our bad stuff. Sometimes our bad stuff gives people more to think about and find unlikely inspiration from than our good stuff. My bet is the guy who was the original subject of my roast is a thousand times more pleased to see his crappy comic left a lasting legacy in the way it did, than he felt any real lasting sense of pride or attachment to his bad comic. There is no way I wouldn't feel the same way if I were in his position.

Cry like a girl? Terezi, we need to have a talk about this internalized misogyny, which your planet supposedly doesn't even have. This was an important line though, because it established that Terezi had the objective of making Dave cry, which she finally succeeds in doing when we hop back to the "present." Some might say that bamboozling him into a vat of soup surrounded by crocodiles chopping onions actually constitutes a desperate measure. But hey, it gets the job done. This is another very good panel, incidentally. This scene, combined with the LOHACSE moneycrime antics, all paint a picture of Dave's adventure as a nonstop parade of utterly ridiculous shenanigans, mostly fueled by Terezi's whims.

i may not be into homestuck anymore but i still do enjoy the concept of god tiers! i was inspired thanks to @melonsharks‘s good good hlvrai homestuck post. i used this god tier analysis by dahniwitchoflight to figure out what i wanted to slap on benry and gordon. 

my personal god tiers for the main hlvrai cast and my very brief/flimsy justifications for choosing them:

Gordon: Page of Blood (he’s the leader, the protag! even though he might not be the best at it or even want the role in the first place) Benrey: Bard of Void (doesn’t give a shit 99% of the time and is full of mystery and secrets! what exactly are they? why are they like this?) Tommy: Witch of Life (he created sunkist, defying the laws of nature, and he’s super powerful and badass) Bubby: Prince of Breath (they want to get out!! out of the tube! out of black mesa! xe wants to go to space!!) Coomer: Mage of Light (cursed with knowledge of being in a video game and suffers from it) G-Man: Seer of Space (he deals with dimension shenanigans)

Lightbound

Aside from what Andrew Hussie wrote, and what I wrote on my LordOfClasspect blog about lightbound. There is something I wanted to go further into detail about that is pretty evidently clear in all examples of Lightbound that I think is pretty interesting.

So basically, aside from knowledge Lightbound are marked by an extreme challenge with Morality. Hussie describes that lightbound tend to find loopholes around the rules. This generally works out for them but it becomes a problem in that they often times end up with a distorted or grey perspective of morality, which leads into a tendency that when they do Wrong, they are explicitly Evil and marked by a curse.

Rose Lalonde tried to loophole the game Sburb, and in the process directly destroyed the game's architecture and doomed the entire session even for her friends. Nearly casting them all out into the Void to be eaten by the horrorterrors. Whether explicit or implicit she became the villain defacto. Even her alcoholism in general signifies that she doesn't care enough to recognize that even her seemingly lowly necessary Seer title was absolutely critical and responsible for the success and wellbeing of not just herself but her friends as well. Similar to Dirk's darkest bout of negligence towards his friends but more direct, straightforward and exact.

Vriska snapped the spine of an innocent and continues on destiny's path as if she will face no consequences. Constantly hijacks the plot and spotlight regardless of whether this is actually optimal or not. Her best character development came when she was humble and beating herself up as an inverted expression of her role. Then she could face up to her direct fault and flaws.

Aranae becomes so selfish she will literally doom another version of herself to do it, trying to make herself Alpha by force. In the process she disrupts both Jake and Dirk, Jake in a fundamental way and makes it clear she has no qualms with hurting Dirk to get what she wants. She goes from an extremely patient and kind being to one of impatience and grey morality.

Outside of Homestuck Canon, you have Rick Sanchez, who is an apt example to bring wider representation. As Rick Sanchez is a Lord of Light. Recently it was revealed in a canonical short written by Justin Roiland that Rick is in fact Morty. Rick hands Morty a potion saying that it's from excretions from the memory parasite in season 2, and that it will turn Morty into Rip Van Winkle. He also overlaps his reflection with Morty's face, and points saying "Rick Sanchez". Thus it's officially confirmed Morty is Rick, and the implications and realizations for what this means are endless.

For one, it puts things in perspective. Throughout the entire show Rick and Morty's stories run right alongside each other. And it clearly paints a contrast and shows the way the world works for Morty compared to how it works for Rick. There's also countless references and scenes that completely change context if you realize they are actually synchronized time events synchronizing Rick and Morty in a way that makes it plainly clear that due to Time Shenanigans, everything Morty does and goes through influences and changes Rick's character, memory, etc. So much so to the point that it's obvious everything Morty does IS Rick's actual back story, and Rick "already did it" before, as it's defined when Morty does it for the first time.

The realization is clear. Morty is bullied, is dumber than others around him, and struggles hard to keep up with others. Somewhere along the line, originally, Morty just shifted into prop comedy and entertainment like his father Jerry, before eventually getting into Science and realizing that the mathematical, concrete, and absolute nature of Science played really well with his Asperger Syndrome. He then at some point invents a portal gun, and explores the universe. At some point he flies under the alias Rick Sanchez, which in the real world is a notorious alias for people needing a fake identity especially people who have done so many crimes they can never get clean.

Rick and Morty are so opposite it's not even funny. Yet that's what makes this so obvious. Somewhere along the way Morty has an Ego Death because of how the universe treats him, and he evolves into everything he wasn't. This is why Rick suffers and explains his absolutely nihilistic and cynical view of the world. Because as Morty he learned the hard way that the universe does not care about you, does not play fair, and will just keep pushing and pushing with no limit. Eventually he just snapped and flipped it around so at least he always wins.

Now the relevance here is astounding. As Morty he was a Muse of Void. Inspiring the Void but in a Blackwing way. Morty seems innocent and harmless and like the Hero, but his actions always invariably lead to suffering, death, and evil. Evil Morty is predominated Morty and makes it clear that Morty is just in all ways inherently Evil and Destructive, but in a Passive way. Rick in contrast may contradictingly claim he doesn't care, thinks morality is bullshit, and does things which are morally fucked up. But inversely when challenged by the Devil, has a special passion for wiping him in the dust. Meanwhile even his worst acts which seem on the surface to be so reprehensible that they are unforgivable, what we are shown are things which with a good enough reason to balance it out, actually makes him a Savior.

It's actually Morty who is contradictory. Void is ambivalent and while Voidbound have half Light in them, Morty is the one who is ambivalent when it really matters and doesn't actually care when he absolutely should. Only to challenge Rick's authority and to rebel does Morty act like he's the good guy that really cares. Needless to say if we read the entire story a different way, Rick was inverted originally. As a single entity he became Light more and more over time, but it was a long process of trial and error. In the process to becoming the All Powerful Rick, Morty carries a lot of Moral Baggage. Every Rick has done something virtually ubforgiveable but continues moving through the universe running on as much borrowed time as he can get. Not really deserving everything he has and is but continues on anyways. Changing the Rick and Morty story in a very keen way if you view it as 1 continuous character both ways. Making Rick appear more like Vriska.

Basically if we view it as 1 singular and linear storyline. Then Rick is trying to run along after doing whatever evil and trying to escape the very consequences he created in the process. Nevermind that Morty gaining so much knowledge and changing personality so radically has warped his perception of everything so radically. That he can hardly tell right from wrong, and has no sense of what he is or isn't allowed to do. And technically he has the power to back it up. So much so it's hinted throughout the show of how Morty would have abused his science to do things for his own personal gain. Fridge Horror stuff.

The point is this is a perfect example of what I mean about Lightbound. Even Thor from Marvel Avengers has the fact that his family has a history of Genocide, and it's in his own veins as much as it was in his father's.

Lightbound embody the aspect of Perfection and Holiness. But as it has become obvious this has to be a story of a flawed mortal BECOMING the epitome of this... And God/The Universe is so forgiving and encompassing that nobody said you couldn't break a few eggs to make an omelet. What matters is where you end up/the destination/your intended goal.

Lightbound may mess up more than others, and in vastly worse ways than other Bound. But they succeed more than others do, and go farther.

Day 14: The Ultimate Reward

Movies are one of the main vectors that culture uses to transmit itself in the modern day, and if it sounds like I’m describing this form of cultural reproduction like a virus, you’re not wrong. The concept of the viral video has been around for about 15 years, if memory serves, and Homestuck’s self-referential format closely recalls the snowclone and advice animal type memes of the late thousands. Meme itself is a word coined by Richard Dawkins to describe the basic unit of cultural reproduction and transmission. While the lines related to memes from Metal Gear Solid have become memes themselves,

John and Karkat’s lives are both shaped by memes, transmitted to them through movies. John’s ideas about romance and family are shaped by his movies, Karkat and his ideas about romance and family are shaped by his movies.

The narration insists that Feferi and Eridan are made for each other, but their romance almost immediately disintegrates. The narrative is training us to be skeptical of the Troll’s preoccupation with Romantic Destiny. The idea that you have one soulmate, a person you were just destined for who it’ll work out with, is bogus.

Something about this sequence has inspired me to talk about Society with a capital S. Both Hobbes’ Leviathan  and Ginsberg’s Howl talk about Society with a capital S - the indistinct entity, the system which arises seemingly unbidden from the gestalt of myriad human interactions, parables about social systems.

Leviathan is a founding myth for the social contract and liberalism in general. As one of the petite bourgeoisie who benefits from Liberalism, it is of course in Hobbes’ interest to defend its existence and provide justification for the material conditions he benefits from, but Howl is considerably less charitable. Referring to the same entity as Moloch, Ginsberg describes it as an incommensurable monster, consuming the lives of the men and women who make it up to further its own agenda.

Authoritarians have always used the threat of cultural extinction in order to justify unjust material conditions and social hierarchies. Fail to fall in line, and Western Civilization is doomed. Glub Glub (who I refuse to call anything else, Feferi’s Lusus, you know who I mean) is the physical manifestation of this threat, an unbearable burden foisted upon troll society by their overlord, Lord English, to force them to participate in a system that guarantees their inability to produce ethical behavior. Their choice has always been a choice between murder and extinction.

Eridan is fascinating to me. I don’t know if he predicted the Incel movement, or was merely an agglomeration of school shooter, neo-fascist stereotypes, but boy is he absolutely spot-on - the fascination with military history, the emotional theatrics, the possessive and entitled attitude toward the women in his life.

Feferi’s a sweet girl, but she’s still one of the people who benefits from Alternian Society. The problem has never been that the Condesce is a brutal evil woman, the problem is the way that Alternian Society is structured in the first place. I’ll have more to say about this whenever we get to Openbound, since Feferi’s rule is discussed more there, and I’ll definitely have more to say about it when I eventually write the companion piece that I intend to about Hierarchy, Patriarchy, and so on and so forth. That one might be a long time coming though, because a lot of Homestuck is devoted to examining it, and I think it might end up being my longest essay. It’s the theme I think is the most directly applicable to real life, hence the import.

Feferi’s caretaking attitude and controlling predilections are also juxtaposed with Jade’s in the same way that Kanaya’s maternal instinct and green thumb are juxtaposed with Jade’s. Could it be that as the Witch of Space, Jade Harley is the ultimate mom?

Man, as long as I’m comparing Eridan to neo-fascists and Feferi to the political establishment, this relationship between the two of them - the way that Feferi views her enabling of Eridan as actually curtailing his worst excesses -  really smacks of the kind of unity and compromise rhetoric that liberals always seem to spout in order to justify their decision to adopt moderate right-wing policy instead of actual left-wing policy.

Just as I’m not here to defend Eridan (he’s a piece of shit who knows what he did), I’m not here to attack Feferi, or to excuse her. Characters in Homestuck are frequently both abusers and victims.

Feferi’s relationship with Eridan is complicated. For starters, she isn’t really curtailing the worst of his excesses, not the way that she thinks he is. Feferi has authority, one way or the other, and by being emotionally available to Eridan, she has enabled him more than she has prevented him from doing wrong. Cutting him out of her life earlier could have sent a clear message to Eridan that his genocidal ideation is not okay, but instead, she has afforded the luxury of her presence.

The aforementioned preoccupation with Romantic Destiny probably made it so much easier for her to wait, too. As the Heiress, Feferi enjoys all the benefits of being in troll society while having to put up with almost none of the downsides. The suffering of other people - the extra pointless emotional turmoil she puts Eridan through by stringing him along, the suffering of the trolls whose lusii she has employed him to murder - their suffering is all theoretical to her. It’s not something she’s ever had to encounter herself (something she shares in common with Jane - if I remember correctly, Andrew’s commentary suggests that he picked up some of the ideas he was originally exploring with Feferi to explore with Jane).

Instead of indulging Eridan’s emotional theatrics (he continues to make other people’s suffering about himself, via his pretension of nobility) I want to call attention to the fact that, as a chemical coping mechanism, Homestuck compares Trolls’ use of Soda to humans’ use of alcohol.

I don’t know if sugary beverages have a similarly potent physiological effect on trolls as alcohol has on humans, and it doesn’t matter if it does - the parallel is being drawn nevertheless. I’m only making this point, because later on it will become important: Terezi and Rose’s respective addictions (Rose’s alcoholism and Terezi’s... sodaholism?) directly mirror each other.

The fact that Vriska’s narration here describes these sidequests as pointless is, I think, another clue into Vriska’s overall character. By all accounts, she and Tavros actually seem to be having a blast together. She’s not going for the gold, she’s not skipping right to the end, the two of them are just screwing around in her magical land, going on adventures. Okay, she is literally going for the gold in the sense of treasure hunting, but in a more figurative sense, the Vriska we’re more familiar with would probably be a taskmaster, using the scourge of her overbearing personality to drive the team forward to victory over the main final boss. Instead, she’s most in her element here when she’s not doing anything remotely important at all, just hanging out with someone she likes(hates? Troll friendships are complicated.)

Abusive relationships are rarely as obvious or simple as one person harassing and berating the other all the time. Tavros is clearly having a blast here too, and throughout this whole sequence.

The problem is that there are two Vriskas (at least), the Vriska who lives inside of her, who she’s only comfortable bringing out around people who have no expectations for her, and the Vriska that Scratch, and Spidermom, and Sn0wman are egging her on to be, the Ideal Troll who cuts through the bullshit, cuts to the chase, and becomes the most important person in the universe. Later on, they will be literally bifurcated by John’s retcon shenanigans.

Homestuck uses the language of alternate selves and ultimate selves to discuss a question that is applicable to real life as well. “Who is the definitive version of a character for whom different choices and versions of themselves are possible?” And when applied to real life, the question becomes something more like, “Could I have chosen to do something else instead of the thing that I did? Are my intentions important, or only my actions?” I don’t think it answers clearly, but just getting us to think about it might be sufficient.

The Black Queen is just one of the many malign influences in Terezi and Vriska’s lives, and while she’s not literally an abusive parent to both of them, by egging them on to indulge their worst excesses (Egging Terezi on to persecute people pre-emptively or overzealously, egging Vriska on to take away other people’s agencies), it’s safe to say that her voice is just one of many doing the same thing for the two of them.

Maybe if we continue to read Aradia as being Vriska’s doppelganger, being savagely beaten by one of her own victims, and one who is so like her in terms of her feelings of helplessness, her feelings of being at the whim of a cosmos that is out to get her, Vriska realizes that the thing she lashes out to attack in other people - the weakness loathed by troll society - is what she hates and fears the most in herself.

Aradia interprets Sburb as being a challenge to come between any prospective gods and the ultimate reward. Perhaps that is the case. Assigning intent to Sburb to me seems possibly flawed, since it is, after all, only the reproductive organ of a universe. But perhaps it does have some intentions of its own. Are those intentions uniquely Sburb’s? Perhaps specifically Skaia’s. Maybe they are even, more generally, the intentions of Paradox Space itself. But Sburb itself seems more ambivalent to its players than anything. The vast majority of sessions, it seems, kill their players outright, or at least produce null sessions that never give rise to universal reproduction.
