Anytime I see a post that reminds me that reciting the pledge of allegiance in school is common in the US my soul briefly exits my body

Shit’s real fuckin weird. I understand how you would not realize that if you’ve been doing it all your life but I cannot emphasize enough *how fucking weird* it is.

#I went to middle and high school in the US #but it was a private school and we didn’t do this #good for me bc I knew when I first heard that thing at 9 years old that it was fucked up #I might’ve been enough of a goody two shoes that I would’ve done it anyway if instructed to?#but genuinely not sure about that #I thought it was fucking creepy the first time I heard it!!!!!!!#it was creepy and weird!!!!!!!#I remember I went to my dad afterwards like. demanding an explanation of it #and I was like ‘they’re pledging allegiance to a piece of cloth! it makes no sense!’#and he tried to explain it as like. oh it’s about the broader idea of a country—#and I just kept pointing out THAT’S NOT WHAT IT FUCKING SAYS THO #and what it says is creepy and weird #and unfortunately for him I’d already been assigned Wilfred Owen’s Dulce et decorum est as reading #as part of the WWI unit we were doing that year #I didn’t know the word nationalism yet but I was Fairly Fucking Clear where I stood on glorifying a country #so yeah. i’m glad no one ever made me try to say it #bc I was a goody two shoes all through school #and I honestly don’t know how me and the teachers would’ve squared my reaction to that request #it’s so. it’s SO out of step with my reality #to imagine a class full of students who think I’m ‘annoying’ for thinking the weird nationalism propaganda is weird

Uh, guys? Don't confuse your crappy televised fanfic for the story that Tolkien actually wrote.

Galadriel was never "under Sauron's thrall." That's something ROP made up. In Unfinished Tales, she was the only one in Eregion who suspected that Annatar was lying about being an emissary of the Valar. Celebrimbor was deceived by him. She was not. She was certainly not "under his thrall." No, not even because she had Nenya.

Yes, when Frodo offered her the One Ring, she was tempted. It could have given her the power to prevent the fading of Lothlórien. But when she makes this speech in the book, and in the Peter Jackson movies, it's her own thought, she's not repeating something that Sauron said to her once:

“You will give me the Ring freely! In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!”

These are Galadriel's words. Her words. Not Sauron's. And she was tempted by the One Ring because she could have been a more powerful queen, not Sauron's queen. Like, you guys really took one of the most powerful and complex female characters in Tolkien's works and you made her story all about a man and his power over her and his manipulation of her. Fuck off.

And stop tagging ROP as Lord of the Rings.

The (unintentionally) funniest things in the very serious vampire novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, in my most humble personal opinion

Count Dracula, whose only topic of interest is his own glory as a warlord of times past, dressing up as a servant and cooking, setting the table and folding sheets among other housework to fool Jonathan, probably while muttering to himself 'it's okay Vlad you're still cool you're still cool' over and over again

Dracula throwing a fit at Lucy's window while in bat form like 'You shut out Dracula? You shut him out like the mosquito? Oh, vampirism for you! Vampirism for you for all eternity!'

Dracula, once again at a window while in bat form trying to listen to Van Helsing planning his demise, and being fucking shot at by Quincey Morris and having to flee like 'wait what the FUCK was that???'

On the topic of how trigger-happy Morris is; Van Helsing going on about all the traditional lore on how to figh vampires and Morris saying 'how about we just fucking shoot him' 'yes we'll take that into account too, extra credit'

'oh lmao it's that bitch Harker, can't believe he made it out of my cas- shit he's got a knife' *immediately jumps out the window and flees the country*

Mina, fully and acutely aware of evertything relating to Lucy's death, otherwise the most sensible character in the novel: Last night I dreamed about the creature from hell that lives literally next door and I woke up this morning feeling absolutely awful. I'm sure it's nothing worth mentioning tho

Dracula's demise being larlegy in part due to the fact that he spends most of his time dealing with English bureaucracy and leaving his mail lying around. like the lord of darkness himself sitting in an office to buy a ship ticket, being cryptic and edgy while the worker is just like 'yeah whatever here you go, next' is something that actually happens in the novel
