BLOWN A WISH
pairings. cho hyun-ju x f!reader
cw. established relationship, fluff, kisses, hyun-ju forgets reader's birthday, this takes place long after the games (they all survive and get a fair share of the money yay).
author's note: i have two more fics for hyun-ju in my drafts, please keep requesting for her! she's such a dear i love her so much RAAAH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to be fair, birthdays weren't a big thing in your house.
it never bothered you, well, sometimes it does. only when you were little, you used to get invited to birthday parties, then, you realized how much it mattered at that age. but no matter how much you protested to your parents, they denied every single request.
you matured though. you realized that it was just a reminder of the time passing since you were born. ever since then you never mind it.
and well, as you got older, you had bigger things to worry about. school, classes, studies, college, jobs, work, bills, bills, bills.. so many bills. to be covered in debts you are unable to pay, the thought of your birthday never crossed your mind ever again.
but after some, not so pleasant events, you managed to get back on your feet. you managed to pay your debts, find a job, a nicer apartment, and a very, very, nice woman.
cho hyun-ju had her struggles as well. you talked to her only once throughout the deadly games, but soon you were reunited during a stressful night at a convenience store. you soon grew a bond together, sure it was bonded by trauma— but it was amazing to have someone close by.
you two grew closer everyday. after some time, she moved into your apartment. it was everything you could ever imagine. things were great. you went on dates, talked everyday, cooked together— hyun-ju is an amazing cook you noted, and everything seemed perfect.
everything is perfect. but recently, jobs have been piling up, specifically hyun-ju's. your time and her time kept getting disrupted by sudden meetings, paperwork, and nagging clients.
soon, the coffee table by the couch was filled with unorganized files. you could only shower hyun-ju with reassurance and motivating words, making her coffee from time to time, and giving her forehead kisses before going to bed early.
you respected her work. so you never bothered her. besides, you got your own things to settle.
not long after, your birthday came.
hyun-ju had planned everything beforehand. she'd come back from work earlier, she'd cook your favorite meal, and she'd give you a present she had already prepared (a handmade gift and a letter for you). she also bought a big bouquet of flowers that were meant to be picked up—
two days ago?
the date on her phone made her eyes widen. did she just miss your birthday? she couldn't believe it. surely this was some glitch in the matrix or something!
she realized you weren't home yet, right, you are currently out buying groceries. how much time does she have left to cook you dinner? she didn't care to check the time again, she went to the kitchen to cook a quick yet delicious meal. it was your favorite.
hyun-ju had become a witch running against time, your favorite meal was ready in no time. after plating it, she quickly called a shop to get flowers sent right away, then, she took a break to ease off for a bit.
the handmade gift and letter is in a box under your bed, she knew for sure. after inhaling a glass of water, she grabbed it and put a ribbon as a finishing touch. she was very proud of it.
she waits rather impatiently for the flower to arrive,
and almost in an instant, the doorbell rings.
she ran to open it, only to be met with your beautiful face, holding a bunch of paper bags filled with all kinds of needs.
"hyun-ju, ah, i forgot my keys, see." you gestured to your empty pockets. hyun-ju basically froze in place, "could you please help me with these." you laugh awkwardly, she grabs the paper bags immediately.
she mentally facepalms herself, "oh and. this came by the lobby, said it was for cho hyun-ju, so i grabbed it since i was going up. i figured you were still doing paperwork." you motioned to the bouquet of flowers that was hidden behind the paper bags.
you have to be kidding me.
hyun-ju sighs, "let me bring those bags in for you first." she puts the paper bags on the counter, you close the door with your feet, your arms holding the remaining paper bag and the bouquet of flowers, placing it beside the rest.
"so, um," hyun-ju starts, "that bouquet was actually for you."
you tilt your head in surprise, smiling. "really?"
hyun-ju nods. "see, it was supposed to be delivered two days ago, for your birthday. but gosh- i'm so sorry. i was so busy with work i forgot to pick it up. it's probably starting to wilt as we speak, so i bought a new one and called to get it delivered right away."
before you could respond she continues,
"and i know it is no excuse to forget your own girlfriend's birthday, i had everything planned out, you know. i was going to cook your favorite meal, and then surprise you with the flowers and the gifts i've prepared. but, i don't know what happened. time just flew by and i just realized earlier today," she catches her breath, "but do not fear, i cooked the meal just in time, it's right on the table ready for us. and well, you've seen the flowers so it's no longer a surprise but, there's one more thing."
she quickly runs off to grab the box under the bed before coming back to you in your confused state. "i made this. it's special, just for you."
she hands it to you, the words 'for my one and only :)' written neatly on it, sparkled with glitter and stickers.
"oh, hyun-ju! you shouldn't have," you smile widely.
"i'm really sorry for forgetting, i don't know how i can make up for it," she frowns.
"you know i don't usually do birthdays. this is the most i've ever gotten in my entire life. i'm very grateful for you, hyun-ju."
you give her a kiss, a very sincere one.
"thank you so much, i really mean it."
she smiles, brushing off how her cheeks are turning red. "come on, let's eat, the foods gonna go cold. i made you your favorite."
"my favorite's right here, what do you mean?" you tease, pointing at hyun-ju's now red face.

evieee i’m feeling soft and mushy and i had a thought... what was the eddies’ “oh. OH.” moment, like the exact moment they realized that reader was it for them and they actually wanted to marry reader :') i mean i know some eddies are not into the idea of marriage but that’s fine! but what about the others :') (also ily MWA)
omg this is so cute (ily2 mwahhh!)
so older!eddie you can actually read his because it’s the moment in don’t be cruel where they’re both with brielle and reader is just so happy and getting along with her and they’re actually getting along. that’s the first time he’s like yes i could marry her, i want to spend the rest of my life with her.
mafia!eddie it’s definitely after one of his more vulnerable moments. maybe after a particularly draining day when he lets the mask fall, so to say, and is open about how emotionally draining what he does is. the way she validates it and listens, tells him she doesn’t think less and just stands by him and supports. he’s looking at rings that next day.
boxer!eddie there’s an angst blurb with him about how he’s using steroids (found in vivis writing challenge masterlist) and the aftermath of that, when he sees how much she really cares and how passionate she is about him and his health and career. that’s really when he’s like, “damn. she does love me. and i really want to be with her forever.”
dom!eddie’s is definitely super simple and sweet, pretty early on too. they’re out listening to a band play somewhere, and she’s just all over him- very publically and unashamed. it’s not her usual scene but she goes for eddie. they’re both a little tipsy and he’s just absolutely love struck. feels like he wants to do everything and anything with her.
cowboy!eddie it would be the first time she came to one of his competitions. he told her not to come, didn’t want her to travel and move things around just for him, but she did anyways. didn’t tell him, just showed up and surprised him. it really meant a lot, and he’d tell her that much later, because normally he’d just say not to come bc no one ever showed up even if he asked. a defense mechanism for him really. so when she did it just meant the world to him and he wanted her to show up for everything for the rest of his life.
rockstar!eddie it was in nantucket. set after dark shadows when they take their trip to the summer house on the east coast. there was feelings there before with both of them, but they were still trying to fight them and hide them but this is where things change and they decide to try and date. but a specific moment would be during the fourth of july. there’s a firework show on the docks, eddie stands out from all the others clad in ralph lauren and linens and nb couldn’t love it more (such a stark contrast from the first meeting lol). it’s really mundane and something just flips and all eddies feelings come out and he’s just like ok i want to be with her.
janitor!eddie’s is really early on, really cutesy and simple. shortly after they start dating. his birthday, the first they celebrate together. she goes all out, gets steve’s help in planning a party at the hideout with all his friends. “even tried to reserve a room, munson. like we have a fuckin’ private room.” the owner cackled and told him. she got his favorite cake, even a gift, and he was so overwhelmed with affection and love and just was in love.
hockey!eddie it was pretty early on honestly. during the start of the season, their first together. he’s bummed because he’s out of town for halloween, his favorite holiday, and won’t get to celebrate. she flies out and surprises him, books a stay at a hotel for the holiday as a long weekend and the two go out. brings a costume (a special festive lingerie too for later) and they go out after eddie’s game to a bar that’s celebrating the holiday, they come back and spend the next day watching the halloween movie marathon on tv, splitting a bag of candy. just so casual and sweet, but eddie is head over heels.
modern!eddie, i mean he’s in love from the first moment lol but honestly, when she’s vulnerable with him. when she’s soft and shows a side of herself to him that feels so personal and special to see. he feels just overwhelmed and special to get to see it and is in love.
bouncer!eddie it’s so dumb but it’s true i’m sorry, and it’s the first time she lets him cum inside lmao. he’s been in love before but like she let him creampie her??? he’s never felt more connected and in love ever. genuinely. he’s so obsessed after that just infatuated.

I love your writing! Could you write something about birthday sex between Leon and reader where she dresses up for him?
LEON DOESNT HAVE A CANON BIRTHDAY WTF?? This man can’t have anything huh? Smh Thank you sm!! And I love this request omg
Leon Kennedy x Reader
Tumblr media
Warnings: nsfw, afab!reader, lingerie, light spanking at the end
Tumblr media
For the first time in years, Leon was home for his birthday. Finally you two could celebrate on the actual day instead of days or weeks later. So you wanted to make it special.
You woke up early and made him breakfast in bed, which of course didn’t work seeing as how he can sense the moment you leave the bed. So instead you both had pancakes while cuddled on the couch, and he said it was just as perfect.
The majority of the day was spent lazing around, watching movies he’s been wanting to watch or catching up on shows you wait for him to watch. It’s simple but something you know he cherishes so much.
You did, however, book a reservation at a nice restaurant for dinner. The two of you driving there on his motorcycle despite you wearing his favorite little black dress.
The food was delicious and when dessert came out you sang him happy birthday embarrassingly loud, making him blush and cover his face.
Everything had been perfect, and now you couldn’t wait for him to see his gift, or more specifically, you couldn’t wait for him to unwrap it.
“Thank you for today baby, it was perfect.” Leon mumbled against your lips as he walked you back into your shared bedroom.
“It’s not over yet.” You smirked, turning the both of you around and gently pushing him onto the bed.
His eyes widened a little before a cocky, self satisfied smirk settled on his lips, “Oh really now?”
“Mhmm.” Nodding, you stood between his legs and grabbed his hands, placing them at the hem of your dress, “You still have to unwrap your present.”
“You’re right, beautiful.” He whispered, pulling you a little closer and sliding his hands up your dress, “Can’t believe I almost forgot-“
Leon’s voice catches in his throat and you watch with a smirk as he stars at his hand under your dress like he has x-ray vision. You open your mouth to say something teasing, when suddenly you have a face full of your hair and black fabric.
“Fucking hell babygirl.” Leon moans, finally pulling the dress completely off you before sitting back and just staring.
You blush as you straighten your hair out, standing there in a black lace lingerie bodysuit and black thigh high stockings.
“You like it?” You ask after a moment of him just quietly staring at you. He hasn’t made a move to touch after ripping the dress off, instead just sitting there slack jawed.
“Are those buttons on the crotch?” He asked instead of answering your question.
You huffed but answered anyway, “Yes, I thought you might like to fuck me in it.”
“You thought right baby.” He muttered as he reached out and yanked you into his lap, “Fuck you’re perfect, I love you so much.”
Giggling at the praise you wiggle your hips a little making him groan, you can feel how hard he is already, “I love you too, Happy Birthday Leon.”
He smirked up at you before giving your ass a playful smack, “Happy Birthday to me indeed.”

PRECIOUS THINGS - Kazuha, Itto, Heizou, Kokomi & reader
i. SUMMARY: What kind of things would they give as a gift? ii. CONTENT WARNINGS: None! iii. NOTES: Can be read as platonic or romantic, fluff, gn!reader, 0.7k words. iv. A/N: it's actually my birthday soon! this was a little early present for myself hehe. i hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
KAZUHA
Kazuha doesn’t care much for material things. He’s a vagrant, there’s no room for too many unnecessary belongings when one is travelling with the wind. Sentimentality only slows him down.
Because of that, he keeps his gifts limited to something intangible. He’ll take you out for the day, show you the most peaceful places of Inazuma and bring you down to the beach to watch the sunset.
As the sun dips low in the sky, he'll let you rest your head against his shoulder or in his lap if you're tired. But make sure you don’t fall asleep too quickly, or you’ll miss the beautiful view.
If Beidou allows it, you might even be treated to a stay on the Alcor, where Kazuha will help you up into the crow’s nest so you can observe the sea from the sky.
Perhaps the most precious thing he gives you is a haiku, written just for you. He’ll recite it while you’re relaxing on the ship, spinning words as elegantly as the waves flowing below you.
“Did you enjoy it? Well, perhaps we’ll have to spend some more time together when the winds lead us to each other again.”
ITTO
Ah, Itto.
Itto is the king of making your birthday a big deal.
The Arataki Gang will make sure to wake you up at the crack of dawn to start the celebrations early. First comes a homemade (and… debatably edible) cake, followed by an off-key singing of Happy Birthday with some beatboxing from Itto to accompany the song.
Then, once Itto has shooed the rest of the gang away to ‘let you have some peace and quiet’ he’ll present you with the gifts he’s picked out.
It’s all things he is interested in—onikabutos, trading cards. There’s nothing Itto loves more than sharing the things he’s fond of with the people he’s fond of, so he worked hard to find the finest of those things. You deserve the best, so that’s exactly what he’ll give you.
“Heh, good birthday, huh? Well of course it is, I couldn’t just leave my favourite honorary gang member without a proper celebration, could I?”
HEIZOU
Heizou! Heizou loves to share his interests with you, one of which being riddles and brainteasers.
On your birthday, he’ll present you with a locked box, covered in various puzzles. Once solved, the inside reveals a riddle that leads to a mysterious location tucked away in one of the chilly corners of Inazuma.
He’ll be waiting for you there, sitting cross-legged on the corner of a picnic blanket. Draped across is an arrangement of foods, a mix of both your favourites. Fried radish balls, Sakura tempura, and Taiyaki are some of his selections, but there is of course a variety of food picked out for you too.
Heizou has a gift as well, something that is exactly what you wanted. You never needed to tell him what it was—as Inazuma’s finest detective, he already figured it out.
“So, partner? Would you say your birthday lived up to your expectations?
KOKOMI
Kokomi wants your present to be perfect. You’re special to her, and special people deserve the best gifts.
Giving gifts is one of her favourite ways to show the people in her life that she loves them, so it must be something personal and related to you specifically; she doesn’t allow for half-thought out presents!
If you’re a fan of books, she’ll gift you a copy of The Legend of The Sword—her favourite book—and shyly ask for your opinion on it.
She will also make time in her schedule to spend time together, which is a gift in itself. She puts her work over everything, so for something else to become a priority is a rare sight.
During the day she’ll take you everywhere: across the scenic beaches of Watatsumi, diving in the depths of the ocean, before finally retreating back to her home to give you a homemade cake. The entire day is planned out (as expected of a grand strategist) and rest assured, she’ll make sure not a moment is wasted.
“So, did you have a good day? I hope so—happy birthday, (Name)!”

day 4 - free day
Love you with my eyes closed
Jason finished moving in the last box that Tim had asked for help with. The penthouse that he and his boyfriend were moving into looked across the street to Wayne Enterprises. Jason couldn’t help but notice how Tim stayed back from the windows and kept checking his hip as though to hold his grapple. Jason knew that ever since Ra’s had kicked him out of the window he’d been more jumpy around high up places.
“Isn’t the view great?” Benard asked as he walked into the living room from where he had been placing a box into their bedroom. “The windows are bulletproof even this far up, and the bedroom windows are also floor to ceiling like out here.”
Tim gave one of his fake gala smiles to Benard and Jason had to look away when he kissed him. “It’s perfect, babe, just what you wanted.”
“We.” Benard said quietly before kissing Tim again.
“Is there anything else that you need moved in?” Jason asked, clearing his throat before Tim got caught in a lie.
Benard shook his head. “Nah, I think that we finally got everything moved over from Tim’s houseboat and my friends helped move my things in already.”
“Cool, Timberly, you good?” Jason asked and Tim nodded.
“Yeah, we’re gonna eat dinner and then I’ll see you later.” Tim waved at him. “I’ll have that flashdrive for you tonight.”
Jason nodded and left the apartment. Knowing that Benard knew about them was the weirdest part of Tim’s life now. But after the most recent cult thing Tim had not really had a choice but admit to the blonde boy who he was.
---
Jason pulled up to the manor and paused. Someone was driving a new car, and based on the other cars in the lot it was Tim… Tim didn’t like cars, he liked to ride his bike and feel the wind across him as he would weave through traffic. He had the redbird but that was specifically for when RR needed to get someone else somewhere, not when Tim needed to go somewhere.
Jason pulled out a cigarette and lit it up. Bruce had a rule about smoking in the manor but Alfred had never cared if he smoked in the garage. Jason just needed a moment to think while staring at the car. It was beautiful, but it was so not Tim it was laughable. Jason walked toward the car with his keys out, maybe if he defaced the thing then Tim could go back to riding his bike.
“Hey!” Tim said from the door pulling Jason out of his thoughts. “I thought I’d find you here.”
Jason took a drag on his cigarette and then slowly blew out the smoke. “Yeah, just got here.”
“You, uh, like the new wheels?” Tim asked, gesturing to the car. “Benard got it for me as an early birthday gift.”
“Surprised me, thought you preferred to bike.” Jason said casually.
Tim shrugged just a little and then looked toward the manor. “I better get back in there. When I left to come find you Duke was showing Benard some game but I’m pretty sure Damian is about to be home.”
“Yeah, don’t let the demon spawn hurt your cultist.” Jason barked out a laugh.
“Don’t call him that!” Tim yelled but in a way that Jason knew he was trying not to laugh.
---
Jason watched Tim hanging out with Benard and his friends. They were at some restaurant that had just opened and there wasn’t a single person other than Jason in the place that was Tim’s friend first.
“Surprised you didn’t invite your fast friend to this, it seems like his scene.” Jason remarked when Tim sat down next to him.
Tim shrugged. “Bart isn’t big on-”
“Tim!” Benard came to sit next to them and leaned over to kiss Tim’s cheek. “Have you met Stacy? I think you guys would get along well. She went to one of those posh boarding schools like you did.”
Jason watched Tim talk to Benard’s friends and move around them the same way he would the rich and famous at a gala. Fake smiles and casual touches. Tim seemed to fit in just perfectly with Benard’s friends, but Jason could see how tired he was and how much he was holding himself back.
---
“Why do you do that?” Jason asked Tim.
Tim looked up from where he was sitting on a gargoyle eating a chili dog. “Do what?”
“You hold yourself back, and make yourself small.” Jason continued.
“What are you talking about?” Tim laughed. “Did that hit to the head hurt you more than I thought?”
“Around your cultist, and his friends, it’s like you cave into yourself, like you’re afraid of telling him the truth.” Jason kept going.
Tim frowned. “Don’t call him that.”
“It’s what he is, isn’t it?” Jason countered.
“You don’t know anything.” Tim spat out, throwing his food wrapper to the rooftop.
“I know you, Baby Bird.” Jason said, leaning in to him. “I know you’re afraid of heights when you don’t have a grapple to save you, I know you hate large windows because they cause you flashbacks to when you didn’t know if anyone would catch you. I know that you hate the confines of a car and think bikes are faster. I know that you don’t like blondie’s friends and miss yours when they’re not around. I know that he’s bought you tickets to some fancy dinner and show which you skipped to eat chili dogs with me. I know you.”
Tim stared up at him and leaned in to kiss him. “How…”
“I have you figured out, have for a long time.” Jason whispered into the space between them.
“Don’t follow me.” Tim grabbed his grapple and ran off into the night.
---
Jason glared at the ceiling and cursed his stupid concussion. He had indeed hit his head harder than he’d thought and had started just saying things. But Tim had kissed him! That had to mean he did something right. But then Tim had run off into the night and Babs had called him in for a medical check.
“You’re an idiot.” She said from by her computer set up. “He’s dating Benard, he’s not going to just fall head over heels for you all over again just because you finally noticed him.”
Jason groaned. “What are you talking about?”
Babs sighed. “Tim was in love with you for years Jay, but you were too out of it to ever notice. Just because you’re noticing him now doesn’t mean that he’s gonna drop the life he’s creating to come back to you.”
Jason’s eye twitched and he lay still. “You don’t mean…”
“Yeah, I do.” She sighed. “Of course maybe I’m wrong.”
Jason looked over to see Tim on the monitors running across the rooftops again. “Hood! What’s your location?”
Babs sighed. “He’s at the clocktower.”
“Thanks Oracle!” Tim responded and then diverted his course to head toward them.
Jason watched Tim’s progress through the city and then stood up to meet him at the door to the outside.
Tim leapt into his arms and cradled his head gently. “Tell me you meant it.”
Jason studied Tim’s eyes and saw them bright and attentive. “I meant it all, I’ve got you figured out.”
“Kiss me like you mean it, because I didn’t just upend my entire life for nothing.” Tim laughed.
Jason kissed him softly and gently, exploring Tim’s mouth with care and dragging up the last of his oxygen before Tim’s words fully registered. He pulled back to look at the younger man. “What did you do?”
“I broke things off with Benard, I couldn’t be a cheater, but I couldn’t stay with him when my heart belongs to you.” Tim tried to kiss him again but Jason pulled back.
“Tim, you guys…” Jason floundered for the words.
Tim placed a finger on Jason’s lips. “He’ll get over me, he’s pretty and kind and will find someone better than me in a week. But he could never compare to the feelings I have for you.”
“I love you, and I’ll prove every day that I’m worthy of you.” Jason promised.
“You already did,” Tim kissed him softly. “You already do.”

Alright, as promised, here are some ✨married Byler/Byler dads headcanons✨
A little preface that this is specifically for my transmasc Mike headcanons, so it’s not necessarily canon compliant, it’s pretty much just MY older byler AU so if it’s not your cup of tea you can just scroll along. Brief mentions of being a seahorse dad and a heads up right now that transphobia will get you an IMMEDIATE block:)
Now that that’s over with!
-Mike and Will get married at some point in the early 90s. Mike doesn’t get his birth certificate changed until some point in the 2000s, so legally he’s considered female, and you better believe they take advantage of it. He’s like at least three or four years on hormones by the time they get married but they’re just like :D yes we’re a straight couple I love my wife :D
-Bonus points if Will wears a dress for the wedding
-They get a dog pretty much as soon as they move in together. Will loves dogs (Mike’s more of a cat person but he adores the way Will’s face lights up when he sees them) and she’s probably a birthday present from Mike to Will. They like to joke that she’s their child, they bring her along to family picnics and events. Joyce and Jonathan are obsessed with her, she reminds them of Chester.
-Mike grows up to be an author! He makes a decent living between selling his books and a gig working at the local library, and Will does some graphic design. He doesn’t particularly like how regimented it is, he prefers doing art for the love of it, and he gets his chance when they’re early to mid 40s because Mike’s books start to get really popular and they can live off that income. Will then pretty much just does the art for the covers and works as a freelance artist. Gloats about being a trophy husband.
-They spend the first decade of their marriage just being the cool uncles for Jancy’s kid, always stopping in for surprise visits because they all moved to a bigger city within a decent distance from each other. Mike likes to buy the kid gifts he knows will piss off his sister, like water guns and play dough that’ll get stuck everywhere. He’ll sneak them candy, pick them up from daycare to take them out for the day. He’s a nuisance.
-Will aids in the schemes, but obviously he’s Jonathan’s baby brother so he’s the good one and Mike is the bad influence😇 And then the kid learns their first curse word from him when he accidentally slips up in front of them and he never hears the end of it.
-He’s really soft and happy with them though, and Mike obviously notices. Mike’s sort of iffy on if he wants any kids but he can tell Will does even if he won’t say anything.
-They adopt their son in like early 2002/2003. His bio mom was really young. They keep in contact with her, send her pictures and updates. His name’s Sam! (Short for Samwise. Because they’re fucking nerds.)
-They end up with two kids. Their daughter’s only six or seven months younger than Sam because hey y’all testosterone is NOT birth control. She pretty much looks like a mini Joyce, her name’s Gwen. (Gwenevere. Like I said, NERDS.)
-Their kids kind of have a similar dynamic to Will and El because they’re so close in age, they’re always in the same grades, etc. People jokingly call them the twins.
-Nancy takes her revenge by doing pretty much the same thing Mike did with her kid with the twins. She’ll sneak them treats, get them sugared up when they’re at her house then send them home. Sam thinks she’s the coolest person EVER (much to Mike’s horror)
-Gwen’s nonverbal. As a toddler, Sam talked for her pretty much all the time. She never said her first word, was really quiet and reserved, and it worried them obviously. But then they were like, oh wait, let’s try sign language (Mike has times where he’s pretty much totally nonverbal too so they already know a decent amount) and as soon as she figures it out she’s talking to them all the time. She’s super high energy and between her and her brother, they get into a LOT of trouble (Mike’s first gray hair comes in when he’s like 34😭)
-She also has a bit of a sixth sense! It’s mostly to do with the supernatural (which isn’t really an issue since the gates are all closed now… right?) but sometimes she’d react to something right before it happened and it would freak her parents out. Will has it too, but he’s so used to it now that he doesn’t really notice it? And Mike’s just like oh well that’s just how he is it’s not weird. It’s a… lot freakier when it’s a toddler.
-(Bonus!! Jonathan, Nancy, Mike, Will, and the kids all have the last name Hopper. Hop adopted Jonathan and Will and they changed their names to match him and their mom and El because FUCK Lonnie.)
I have lots more thoughts but this is going on really long and just🫠 Yeah. Byler dads.

“Oh no,” you breathe.
Everything starts to make more sense when you see Steve waiting for you at Hellfire’s doors. He’s got the smuggest look on his face. You quickly try to turn and run the other way, already embarrassed. But the former Star Athlete is faster, immediately lunging at you to drag you into the club.
“Nope!” Harrington protests.
“Steve-” you begin.
“No no no no,” he shakes his head. “Where do you think you’re going, young lady?”
They’re all gonna see you like this. You hate to admit it, but you had just spent your entire commute crying — evident by your raccoon eyes — because you thought everyone (except for Billy) had forgotten your birthday.
Robin and Vicky were already out of the house by the time you woke up. Max, you assumed, got a ride from Steve to their new barista job. Chrissy turned down a pre-shift ‘Hot Girl Walk’, and Eddie never called. It was starting to feel like the most Adult birthday ever, but by a long shot not the worst.
“Put me down!” you persist.
Birthdays suck. Especially when you share one with your abuser. But you’re in a new era now. An era where you are loved, celebrated, and protected.
“SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHY GIRL!”
You’re bombarded by obnoxious kazoos and party hats, streamers and confetti in all shapes and colors, and what looks like a homemade birthday cake in Jane (Mike’s girlfriend)’s hands, decorated with funky, florescent candles, and crafty red hearts that overpowered every inch of the thick white fondant.
“Oh my god,” you beam.
Max, Robin and Vicky. Chrissy, Argyle, Nancy, Jonathan, and Henry. Will, Lucas, Dustin, Mike, Jane, and Erica who also just had a birthday (she turned 18 last week). Steve. Gareth, Jeff, and Grant. All the faces you’ve grown to know and love since moving to Hawkins, all together in one room to celebrate YOU.
“We were trying so hard to keep this a secret,” Steve explains as he gives you a hug. “I’d say we did a pretty good job.”
“Yeah sorry we couldn’t get a better location,” Mike adds. “Chuck E Cheese was fully booked so Hellfire was the next best thing.”
“You guyssss,” you begin to sob. “This is oddly perfect. Thank you.”
“Well,” Jane says. She holds the cake up to your face. “There's no sense in waiting any longer. Make a wish!”
You close your eyes. I wish for life to always be this peaceful.
And when you open your eyes, you see Eddie in front of you, with a beautiful rose bouquet and a bag in his hands.
“Happy birthday, sweetheart.”
His eyes are twinkling like a kid who woke up early on Christmas morning. You greet him with a warm hug to which he uses that opportunity to affectionately rub your back. You hear some soft “aww”s in the background, but you’re too infatuated with the man in front of you to jokingly scorn at whoever said it.
“How’d you know it was my birthday?” you ask him.
“You can find out lot of stuff from paperwork,” Eddie winks at you. “Specifically your resume. Which, might I say, is very impressive.”
“Why, thank you, sir,” you giggle.
You can tell the sir made Eddie’s stomach do somersaults. Completely blushing now, he hands you your gift in the form of a bag, ushering you to open it — right here — in front of everybody.
"You didn't have to..." you mutter quietly.
You take the bag from him.
"Yet… I did," Eddie spews confidently. He watches as you unwrap your gift. “I’d get you strippers but then it’d feel like work. And your bday should never feel like work.”
You nudge him as you roll your eyes. Such a fucking cornball.
But then you become the cornball. A tear begins to form in your eyes when you look at all your gifts. The roses. A custom metalhead Build-A-Bear with a leather jacket and jeans whose certificate reads “Eddie Bear”, and a gold plated charm bracelet from Everlasting Memories with your name engraved on it. But just when you think you had everything, Eddie scoops up the last one from the bottom. It’s a small wooden sign with a message on it.
CAN I BE YOUR BOYFRIEND?
“Oh my god…” is all you can say.
His voice is as gentle as the fingers he uses to patiently graze your arm. "So can I?"
The tear that formed in your eye finally trickles its way down your rosy red cheeks. "Of course you can."
Then you two share a kiss, eliciting an even louder swarm of “aww”s than the ones before, and generating a reaction from nearby, a very curious dancers.
“I hope you know how special you are to each and every one of us,” Eddie says to you. “Especially me, haha.”
You wipe the happy tears away from your eyes.
“It sure feels like it.”
Eddie gives you the day off and you use it to stuff your face and play board games with all your friends. Eventually after the short festivities you stay behind to chill with everyone for a bit. Then you go your own way to start making dinner, which you insisted on, at home.
When you get home, you’re surprised with another text message from Billy.
Billy Hargrove
I’d say the move has helped us a lot. I have room to miss you 🤣
You smile as you answer back.
To be better days ❤️ Happy birthday, brother. I miss you tons.
Billy Hargrove loved “To better days ❤️ Happy birthday, brother. I miss you tons.”
After your convo with Billy, you make your way over to the freezer to grab and defrost the chicken. Tonight’s menu consists of chicken, greens, and potatoes for dinner, followed by some birthday muffins Bob Newby had his bakers make at his coffee shop (courtesy of Max and Steve) for dessert.
Next, you begin to set the table, making sure to make seven settings for tonight: you, Max, Robin, Vicky, one for Eddie, and one for Wayne.
And when you’re finally done, you take a look around your house that you have made a home with your sister and best friends. You’re finally home. Hawkins is home. And for the first time in a really long time, you can truly say you’ve had… a happy birthday.

A Very Sunny Birthday Surprise
For my dear friend on her birthday! ILYSM 💛 @android-boyfriends
~*~
Sun x Reader, slight Moon x Reader
[A/N: There is a little innuendo in this fluff, so 18+ ONLY, MINORS DNI!!!]
Warnings: Pre-relationship but only just, the two (three?) have been flirting for a while now, Sun and Moon both love you, but this focuses on Sun.
Tumblr media
~*~
Sun had stayed in his recharge station for just long enough to ensure he wouldn't power down making preparations. Today was a very special day, after all! He wanted to make it the very best that he could. Sure, he hadn't exactly been authorized to look at employee personal records, but with Moon's security clearances and know-how, he'd found out your birthday in just a few seconds.
You still owe me for that, Moon asserted from within their circuitry as Sun flitted around the Daycare, putting up decorations. Streamers were hung across the very tops of the play structures - high enough that none of the kids could reach - and draped artfully from the netting that surrounded the outer limits of the daycare.
Oh, I know, but it'll be worth it to see our sunshine so happy, Sun replied as he went for the tape and a second set of decorations. There was still an hour left before the Pizzaplex opened, so when the door to the Daycare opened to reveal you, Sun was momentarily stunned.
"Sun? Moon? You guys active yet?" You called as you tucked your bag beneath the desk like always. Clearly you hadn't seen Sun standing there holding an armful of colorful drawings made by the kids specifically for your special day.
Why is she so early?!
Calm down, Sun! Go talk to her. Or, turn out the lights and let me!
Tucking the drawings carefully into a bend of the play structure, Sun tried to look normal as he walked over to you.
"Sunshine! You're here so early!" He called as he hurried over to the desk. "It's so good to see you! Even more time together, yay!"
"Oh, there you are. Huh, I thought you normally came out of your charging pod later than this."
"O-Oh, yes! But today's, um..." Sun stopped himself before he blurted out his plan. The lights were still off on the other side of the play area, so it obscured most of the decorations. You looked at him expectantly, but when he was less than forthcoming, you turned toward the wall of light switches. "No!"
His exclamation startled you into turning back to face him.
"W-We need to change a lightbulb above the play area. Y-You can't turn the lights on until we're done," Sun said, and if he had an organic body rather than an animatronic one, he'd be sweating right about then. With a gentle, affectionate laugh, you agreed, turning on the computer monitor so you could log yourself in for the day. "I'll um...I'll be right back. Don't leave! Th-The desk, I mean!"
Before he could dig himself into an even more difficult hole–
I heard that, Sun!
Your thoughts aren't any cleaner, Moon!
–he cartwheeled off toward the decorations, moving into overdrive to get them all hung before the kids arrived so that he could surprise you with them in private. Drawings the kids had done practically plastered every surface, and Sun had even delved into the container of glitter glue for his own art endeavors the night before.
About fifteen minutes before opening, Sun swung down to the desk, carefully placing a half-sun, half-stars wrapped gift beside your computer.
"Sunny? Hun, what is this?" You asked looked up from your morning work with a curious smile. He lunged over the desk and flipped the light switch.
"Happy Birthday!" He cried slipping a little paper birthday crown atop your head.
"How did you...? I didn't think anyone would remember..."
"Of course we remembered, sunshine!" He said tilting your chin up and lowering the register of his vocal processors. "Maybe later when the kiddies are gone...we can play house together. I can be the daddy if you want...?"
The blush that colored your cheeks made your stance quite clear.

Wilson giddily skipped through the hospital. He’d been on the edge of his seat all day. Tomorrow was the most important day in his calendar. January 4th, his loves birthday.
The hospital was still adorned in Christmas decorations, but this didn’t faze him. In his mind, December 25th was inferior in comparison to the magnificence of her birthday. He remembered the first birthday they’d shared together which happened to be his.
She’d woken him up with homemade pancakes, but they weren’t as delicious as the many kisses shed pecked onto his face. He didn’t hear anything she’d said as he looked on at the beauty who was practically straddling him wearing a plastic tiara and placing a birthday crown on his own head. But that may have also been caused by the party horn she’d woken him up with. Despite her being a doctor, she hadn’t thought through the ramifications of a party horn placed directly against someone’s ear. She’d happily thrown at him all his presents which had been carefully wrapped and decorated with ribbons and bows. All the gifts had a specific theme of blue and white with ‘doctor’ inspired wrapping paper. It was clearly meant for a child but her giddy face when she proudly showed them off won him over. His favourite gift had been an original film poster of ‘Dead Poets Society’.
“I remember you saying how much that film meant to you. I also already bought a frame for it so we can hang it up in your office tomorrow. If you want to.” She exclaimed whilst bouncing on the bed.
“Birthdays are important.” She’d said as they lay intertwined with their matching crowns, scoffing down the pancakes. “On that day, I can show the most important people in my life how much I love them.” She grabbed his cheeks and squished them together.
“Did your birthdays look half as good as this when you were a kid.” She faltered.
“Not really. No one should ever feel like that on their special day, so I try to make sure no one ever does.”
He’d collected the last card from her patients. The first thing he’d thought of as a gift for her was to ask all the children under her care to make something for her special day. There were a lot of cards, all decorated with glitter and ribbons. He’d specifically told Sadie she could make y/n a birthday crown. Sadie had been here for three years on and off and had a special relationship with y/n. It was only fitting she should get the honour of making the crown. It seemed to Wilson that as soon as you mentioned the name y/n y/l/n, children, parents, and doctors would come flooding, offering their help in any capacity. Every patients room he had gone into he was given two things: a handmade card from the kids and a beautifully wrapped present from the parents. Wilson smiled at this; no other doctor was as loved as she was, not even himself.
He was making his way back to his office, his elaborate plan was coming together. He sat down at his desk and went over the checklist he’d made for her surprise. 5 bouquets of pink roses, 3 bouquets of yellow tulips, chocolates, and macaroons from a patisserie in Paris they had visited on their anniversary, and about 100 pink and white balloons he was going to fill their apartment with. He’d already gone out shopping early this morning to get the ingredients to make her favourite meal and dessert. The icing on the cake, as it were, was the three layered chocolate cake decorated in white chocolate frosting, adorned with chocolate dipped strawberries. He’d had it ordered especially months ago and it was arriving tomorrow morning. After making sure everything was ordered and in place he relaxed into his chair. Closing his laptop, he picked up the shopping bag at his feet. He pulled out the stuffed pink bear he’d made for her, adorned in its little doctors outfit. Looking at it now, he felt silly. Surely, she’d be wanting jewellery or something like that. He’d thought it was cute at the time but now he felt embarrassed at his choice of gift.
The door to his office was ripped open. This caused Wilson to scramble to hide the bear back in the bag. House limped in.
“Please tell me you have actually bought y/n/n a present. You are not going to ruin her special day.”
“No, I have not.”
“I will give you the money, will you please jus—”
“I think you have more important things to worry about. Room 203.”
-x-x-x-x-x-
The two stood on the precipice of the room and watched the sniffling, whimpering, and writhing frame of y/n. She sloshed about on the bed, kicking away her blankets like a petulant child.
“Ah the true test of true love, a bad case of the flu. Enjoy lover boy.” House patted Wilson on the back and made to leave.
“Wait, what are you doing?”
“Getting as far away as possible. She can insult me enough when she’s in perfect health, I don’t want to see how severe it gets with a temperature of 109.” House quickly sprinted down the corridor as fast as his cane could take him. Wilson rolled his eyes at his friends fear of his utter sweetheart. This wasn’t his first rodeo with a sick y/n. All she wanted was love and attention. He was always happy to help.
The patient noticed the tall frame of her boyfriend in the door. She turned over towards him, bunching up her blankets into her body.
“Jamsey. I’m sick.”
“I know, darling.” He made his way over, giggling at the innocent tone of her voice. She squished herself further into the bed to make room for him to join her. “But we’re gonna get you better okay.” He placed his arm around her, and she cuddled into his side.
“But what about my patients.”
“Hey, none of that now. My main priority is you.” He smiled softly at how her eyes couldn’t even stay open till the end of the sentence. Her body was fighting so hard to stay awake, but it needed to stop. Even without the flu she’d been overworking herself recently. Her body needed the rest.
“I’m just sad you’re going to be feeling like this on your birthday.” Her eyes still hadn’t opened but her body had involuntarily snuggled into his side more, making their embrace tighter.
“As long as you’re with me, it’ll be perfect.” She slurred as sleep overtook her. “You are going to stay right?” her last thought before she was dragged further into her snooze.
He planted a gentle kiss on the crown of her head. “I’m not going anywhere.”
-x-x-x-x-x-
*the next morning*
Wilson knocked on room 203. Y/n was now sat up and tucking into the tea and toast she’d been given for breakfast. Despite how much her eyes lit up when they landed on James, her face still looked sunken.
“Good morning baby, how are you feeling?”
“A bit better.” She’d softly uttered as he made his way over to her. She attempted to straighten out her messy hair and wipe away the sleep from her eyes. She fixed her gown, not wanting him to see her as any less than perfect. But the joke was on her as he already saw her as the most beautiful girl in the world.
“I felt so guilty in our bed, leaving you here alone.” He had begged her to let him stay the night with her, even setting up a faux bed in the form of four hospital chairs and a pillow. But she had ordered him to go home and sleep in a proper bed, threatening him with no sex for a month. It was bad enough he would have had a bad back from the chairs, but he had already worked a 10 hour shift that day, she knew he deserved a good night’s sleep.
“Well, you’re here now, and I’m so happy.” She softly kissed his cheek with her arms wrapped around his neck. He turned in her arms, aiming for her lips but she stopped him with her hand.
“Nooooo, I’m sick.” He shrugged away her hand and leant in.
“We’ll be sick together then.” Their lips locked. They each tried to suck out the others soul and their tongues clashed for dominance with y/n eventually relenting. The 12 hours between when James had left last night and now had been excruciating for the pair.
They eventually came apart for air. “I nearly forgot.”
He left her room and returned with a trolley filled with delicately wrapped pink gifts, each one adorned with a massive white ribbon. The trolley was also covered with pink and white balloons tied to each handle. She squealed at this display, practically jumping up and down on the bed, having to be calmed down by James who soothed her cheers with a kiss to the cheek.
“Happy birthday, baby.”
“This is amazing, James. Thank you!” she grabbed the sides of his face to bring him down into a passionate kiss, whilst continuing to utter how much she loves him.
He sat with her on her bed as she thumbed through all the cards from her patients. Each one received a sunny smile and some even elicited a few tears. She proudly wore the crown from Sadie which she compared to something off of a fashion show. All 29 of the gifts were eagerly ripped open. In between each one, she scolded him for buying her too much, but this juxtaposed how furiously she tore into each new gift. He had to remind her that a lot were from colleagues and parents, which warmed her heart.
They reached the end, and she was surrounded by wrapping paper and ribbon.
“There is one more.” He pulled out the bear, hidden at the bottom of the trolley. He began fidgeting with it in his lap, suddenly feeling small in the face of all the previous gifts. “It’s silly but I thought it was cute and I thought you might like it and--”
“YOU GOT ME A TEDDY BEAR!” she threw her arms around him at breakneck pace. When she pulled back, she carefully took the bear from his arms and squeezed it into her chest. She turned it around and giggled at the doctors outfit it was dressed in. “I love it so much! It’s just like the one on your shelf!”
He shuffled so he was sat behind her and took her into his arms. They both gazed down lovingly at the bear. “She’s gonna be our baby. I’ll be her mummy and you can be her daddy and she’s gonna come to work with mummy every day.” She clasped the bear against her chest once again. Wilson sighed at the mess around her hospital room. He began to collect a few fallen pieces of wrapping paper preparing to throw them away. His eyes glanced towards the closed door and saw a pink envelope partially stuck under the door. He picked it up and saw ‘Mrs Wilson’ scribbled across the front. He smiled knowing the one person who called y/n that.
“One more. From House.” He handed her over the envelope. She opened it up and audibly gasped.
“What is it?”
“HE GOT US A SKIING TRIP!” James’ ears were covered in seconds to prevent his ears from being permanently damaged, once again. As she went on and on about the trip which had all been paid for by House, he joined her on the bed and gradually encouraged her to lie down with him, knowing how much her body needed the rest. He gathered her up in his arms and let her tire herself out so she could then slump into his arms and drift off to sleep.

For the Sabezra Secret Santa ask game:
🕐, 🧠,🌟 and 🎄
Thank you so much for the ask @bart1607 ! ☺️ perdón for the absolute insane rambles lol~
🕐 When did you start shipping sabezra?
Ooof, take me back to 2015-2016, I think I remember liking a few things from The Force Awakens back when it came out and remember being recommended a few arts here and there of Star Wars. Eventually, Sabine popped up and fell in love with her design + art of her, I also saw a few here and there with Ezra.
I can’t recall the specific artists (it may have been one of arrival-layne’s draws 🥺) but like, I just LOVED their color scheme and how well they meshed and twined together on the art (sometimes I fall for couple just by their color palette and how well they fit together lol). I think I liked a couple more works and just loved how cute they looked together based on their season 1-2 designs!
I think at some point after, maybe some time in early 2016 or later into season 3, I saw that the series was playing on the tv and remembered the art on the two of them and was immediately drawn in to watch the show for them (gradually just falling more in love with Sabine and Ezra as individuals and together + the rest of the ghost crew 🥺).
I think the episode that overall solidified my love for sabezra was likely Imperial Supercommandos, just the whole episode showing their partnership, their trust in one another, the whole jet pack ride and the insane in sync moments of trust, like Sabine flying back to Ezra and him trusting her to catch him like 😭 and the end where he returns the action by catching her by her hand when her jet pack is shot ✨
Y’all I’m going to eat them I’m sorry 🐺🐺😌😌
This episode just makes me giddy and soft, the growth of their relationship is just beautiful to me!
I will also say that when I got into watching the show, I had only seen a few clips and gifs here and there where Sabine gifted Ezra the holo picture of his parents and I just 😭 I will say that moment comes a close second to how I fell for sabezra 🥺✨ I have since grown to appreciate that scene as a warm and endearing moment of Sabine showing her fondness for Ezra and appreciating his presence as a member of the Ghost crew and a growth to them becoming friends; officially saying his name, “Happy Birthday Ezra Bridger.”
🧠 Any favorite sabezra headcanons
I had to think about these for a bit 👉🏼👈🏼 I try and list 2 and if the question is asked again I list another 2 ✨💜
1. I love the idea of Sabine and Ezra maintaining some communication while Sabine was on Knowest, I can’t recall how long she was away, but just the idea of them talking to each other late at night or whatever the other was available to talk makes me tear up 🥹. Sabine telling Ezra how boring and how colorless her home feels after being away for so long. Or how she misses the warm red and oranges of Antallon (the bright orange that is Ezra hehe) and just the explosion of color with the rest of the Ghost crew; but is excited about nearing the search for her father and talk to him about the art and her art style growth. How she misses him— and the others too! 🥺
Ezra talking about all that is happening in the rebellion, how he almost helped Kallus break out from the Empire and likely sharing about the art Thrawn has collected of hers (which makes her angry >:( how dare he!). I feel like he would also make some small details about how Maul is no longer an issue to deal with and about how he misses her too 🥺
They would stay up as much as they could to talk to each other 👉🏼👈🏼
2. I also have a headcanon of Sabine complementing on Ezra’s doodles whenever she gets a glimpse of them, she was very taken aback by his simple sketches of Lothal and his tower and his loth cats (his draws taken from his journal/diary that he has) and can’t help but praise him (artists always praise all doodles) 🥺🧡 He is very bashful about them at first and always mentions how hers are always more beautiful and incredible.
To which she playful punches his shoulder, how she is serious, his draws are adorable and he should keep trying at them. I love the idea of them just developing this soft friendship over the course of s1-2 with art, Sabine maybe gifting him a small drawing book for him to keep practicing on, especially after she allowed him to draw a few things in hers. To which she often reflects on over the years ahead, especially during her time on Krowest and soon after he was purrgiled.
I don’t know 👉🏼👈🏼 I’m sure Sabine allowed him to used her spray gun whenever they were defacing the Empire propaganda ✨ also Ezra keeping his drawing book or making one while he is in exile in Peridea and keeping up his drawings to show Sabine when they reunite 🤩 HER FINDING IT IN HIS POD AFTER RETURNING BACK WHEN EZRA DEPARTS WITH THRAWN 😭
The feelings of art ✨💜🧡
🌟 Favorite Christmas tradition!
Y’all may laugh (or it maybe more common than I believe) but I didn’t know till I transferred college basically, outside of my hometown, that Christmas festivities are normally celebrated on the 25th 😅
I come from a Hispanic household and a border town in Texas that usually celebrates Christmas on the 24th. The actual Christmas Day is spent sleeping in, eating the leftovers from the day before and just relaxing, enjoying the break and holiday with my parents and sister (occasionally a few tios drop by for some lunch or to drop off or pick up other gifts).
Anyways~ all this to say, my favorite tradition is literally waiting until midnight of the 25th with all the family and friends to basically open the gifts 🎁 While I have since grown up not caring much about the gifts, it’s just being able to see the family siting together, often full of laughs and jokes here and there about the gifts received. We have done the white elephant gift exchange a few times some of the years before and it was always just a loud bustle of laughs with the family, full of jokes and tease and it just warms my heart thinking about it.
There was a year where everyone was just getting bofandas (scarfs 🧣) and it was just hilarious each time someone opened a present.
And then onwards to more drinking and partying until like 3-4 am ✨ personally, I’m 27, almost 28 😩, (I’ve never been a party or social person) and I get tired and sleepy very fast so uwu catch me passing out in my bed ✨
🎄 Real tree or artifical and how long do you leave it up for?
Ah, I’ve only ever had artificial trees and they are just as messy to put up lol. I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone to have had a real tree before 🤔
Personally, I would probably leave it up the whole year if I could lol, when I was living with my parents, I would like to see it linger till the end of January, but they like to put it away as soon as they can. Maybe lasts till the second or third week after Christmas 🎄
Have a good day everyone! Happy thanksgiving 🦃 to all who celebrate, and to those that don’t, I hope you have a delicious meal and a wonderful day ahead 🥰💜

It was Christmas, one of my favorite times of the years, but it seems this year I wasn't as excited. 5:30 am, my alarm had just gone off and I promptly turned it off, Amelia was still sleeping in the guest room, she didn't want me to spend Christmas alone again.
The dawn was so beautiful, so calming and comforting... The city was quiet, only the snow was falling serenely. Parents being awakened by their children eager to open the many gifts that lie under their trees.
My tree wasn't empty, in none of those years has it been... my family couldn't spend Christmas with me, and neither could I with them.. They always made sure to send me gifts months before so I could open them at Christmas and New Year my birthday. Brazil didn't seem so far away when I opened them.
Christmas is a time of year to celebrate with family, dress up in fancy clothes, and listen to silly jokes and boyfriend questions from your uncles. An amazing holiday. (In Brazil.)
"Why did you wake up so early?" Amélia frowned, she was leaning against the wall of one of the corridors that led to the room.
"Why are you awake?" I retorted, she stared at me. “I couldn't sleep, that's all." She nodded and came to me and sat next to me snuggling into me.
" Insomnia again?" She mumbled and I just grunted in agreement
We opened the presents and then we went to the sofa, I turned on the television and put on Friends, a good way to distract yourself..
୨୧ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ୨୧
It was 8:43 in the morning when my apartment doorbell rang, I was surprised, I wasn't expecting anyone, not even Amelia.
I went to the door and looked through the peephole, it was Marcus, the janitor, I opened the door and soon noticed a package in his hands.
"This package arrived for you this morning." He smiled and handed it to me, I smiled gently at him, so he withdrew.
I closed the door and examined the box, it was from Brazil, could it be that one of the gifts my family sent was left behind and arrived now? Who knows.
"Who was?" Asked the black-eyed woman.
"The caretaker, he brought a package for me."
"What is it?" She approached me curiously.
"I don't know, I'll open it."
I sat on the floor facing the coffee table, Amelia soon joined me. The box was medium and light.
I opened the box and found my old MP3 player, along with my headphones and charger, which I thought I lost in 2003 when I went to Germany with my parents, but it looks like it was left in Brazil. He didn't have a specific address, he just said he came from Brazil.
It was still in great shape, just unloaded it seems. I put the Mp3 player to charge next to the sofa and it started to charge.
Amelia had gone back to the guest room she officially declared hers and I went to mine, threw myself on the bed and sleep came fast.

I woke up with the cell phone vibrating, turned it off and went back to sleep, but they keep persisting. I opened my eyes and saw what time it was, 2:32 pm, and 4 missed calls from my mother, I returned the call and she answered immediately.
"Oi, mãe. (Hi, Mom)." My sleeping voice was noticeable and a little muffled because of my position.
"Oi querida, voce estava dormindo?" (Hi honey, were you sleeping?). Her melancholy voice rang out, and I hummed in agreement. "Oh querida, me desculpe, viu? Eu só liguei porque a porra do seu pai ficava me incomodando para ligar para você e perguntar se você gostou dos seus presentes." (I only called because your fucking father kept bugging me to call you and ask how you liked your presents).
"Pode dizer que eu amei, aliás, obrigado por encontrar e me enviar meu Mp3 player, pensei que nunca mais veria." You can tell him I loved it, by the way, thanks for finding and sending my mp3 player, I thought I'd never see it again). said shifting my position so my voice wouldn't be so muffled.
"Como assim? não enviamos nenhum Mp3 player, mas fico feliz que voce achou." (Sorry honey? We didn't send you any mp3 player, but I'm glad you found them). She laughed
Strange..
"seu pai sente muito a sua falta, eu também. Espero que volte logo." (Your father misses you a lot, me too, hope you come back soon). She sighed.
“Eu também, mãe. Vou tentar o meu melhor para ir ao Brasil ainda este ano." (Me too, mom. I'll try my best to go to Brazil later this year).
We talked some more and she had to hang up. I sighed heavily, Amelia is probably still sleeping.
My mp3 player should already be loaded.
I got up still lazy, opened the curtains and went to do my hygiene, as soon as I finished I went to where I had put it to charge and saw that it was 100%.
I turned it on and it started playing some weird music and some kind of thing came out of the screen.
I quickly dropped the mp3 player and walked away. The thing.. or whatever it was, it was yellow and had a funny witch hat, it also had a cape, it was blue with big white glittery stars and white glitter simulating small stars, with an orange wand in the shape of a star.
"WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?"

Constructive criticism is always welcome. English ins't my fist language. Originally the idea was for the reader to be an oc, which in this case would be (Amanda White), but I will refer to her as a reader. Sorry for any grammatical or spelling errors. Comment or reblog it motivates me to keep writing.

꧁Antonia relationship headcanons!꧂
Bc my favorite f/o needs attention
Fluff, cute romance, reader is gender neutral, Antonia is transgender bc I said so
Tumblr media
She showers you with gifts after every heist. Jewellery, clothes, money, paintings, anything she thinks you'll like.
She cuddles up behind you while you sleep. She loves wrapping her arms around your waist and burying her face in your shoulder.
She's not used to you paying for stuff for her. You once offered to pay for her bottom surgery, and she hugged you and burst into tears of joy.
Loves cuddles. Especially when she's little spoon. She feels safe with you wrapping your arms around her.
She hates when you compare yourself to others. She thinks you're perfect just the way you are. "Look at me. There are billions of people on earth, yet I chose you. You know why? Because I love you. Nobody else, just you."
LOVES cosplays. Especially when you cosplay as her favourite characters.
Extremely protective. She will start a fight if someone starts hitting on you.
Will wake up early to make you breakfast. Especially if you're sick.
She will grab your face and cover it with kisses. It's her way of reminding you that she loves you.
Movie nights with Antonia are epic. She goes all out with the snacks, even having a special display to put them in. She also makes hot dogs and nachos, and makes a pillow fort. "How did you afford all these snacks, Antonia?" "Who said I bought them, honey?"
PET NAMES. Honey, darling, sweetheart, abbreviations of your own name, little inside jokes between you two, whatever. She loves giving you nicknames.
Stuck on a section on a videogame? Trying to defeat a specific boss? Antonia will help.
She loves when you help with her makeup. Applying her eyeliner, blending her blush or putting lipstick on. She adores it. "I don't think this lipstick will be on that long..."
She loves when you run your hands through her hair. It's like her very own stress relief.
She goes all out for holidays. Halloween, Christmas, Easter, even your birthday. Every year is always better than the next. Valentine's Day is her favourite, because she gets to shower you with all of her affection.
You wanna go somewhere? Chances are she's already looking at tickets. Especially if it's your favourite musical artist or band.
I HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE THIS I SURE DO AJHXJHCJDBCJDHCHDIC

Hello! I hope this isn’t a bad time, but could I request a short fic of Yuna and Milo? Like they’re just having some mom and daughter time :3 oooo, maybe they went to get food for Milo’s birthday since it is coming up?
If you decide to do this (please don’t if you don’t want to) you can do any au you’d like
ILY(/p) SAFFRON, BYEE! ♥️
Of course (。•̀ᴗ-)✧ Sorry for the late reply btw. I was out all day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~¶~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
Milo, my little angel.
Modern au, no ships. Biological!GiYuLo au.
Fluff.
P.s Happy birthday Milo!!
Today's the most important day of the year. Well, at least to Yuna it is.
Milo will be turning fifteen today! Yuna couldn't believe how quickly the years passed. Just yesterday Milo was a little ball of energy, waddling around adorably, being their little bundle of happiness.
They already celebrated her birthday a week in advance, since Giyuu had to travel for an exchange program between schools. Milo was already content with the celebration, but Yuna wanted to give her a few more surprises.
Yuna had a plan, but she had to wait for Milo to leave before she could execute it. Milo planned to go out with her friend group today, and Yuna was going to take advantage of that.
''Mum! I'll be heading out now! I promised to meet up with the others at the station. See you later! Love you!''
''Love you too angel! Don't be late, it's a school night!''
Yuna knew she didn't need to remind her, Milo was responsible enough to meet curfew, but she couldn't help herself. She was unable to stop herself from being extra careful. She didn't want to take any chances. The surprise must be perfect!
Yuna heard the front door close with a soft thud, before getting to work. She opened her closet, revealing the hidden gifts. She had ordered some fake roses for Milo to decorate her room with, a new flowy knee-length violet dress and a white brooch she noticed Milo eyeing at the store.
A little thing about Yuna is that she loves to spoil her daughter, like her husband. She got into the habit of buying at least two gifts for Milo on her birthday, being influenced by Giyuu's gifting habits. This year she had to compromise though, given the circumstances. She gave Milo one present during the early party, and will be gifting the rest to her tonight.
The order did arrive late, but fortunately made it in time. Yuna was relieved when it arrived last night, calming her tense nerves.
She specifically disliked ordering online due to it's unexpected timings, but she had to rely on it this time, and she's fortunate enough for it not to let her down.
She spread the gifts out on her bed, admiring her taste in gifts. Soon, she started feeling like enough time was wasted, and gathered everything to place the gifts neatly inside a box with white and lavender wrapping.
With that part of her surprise done, she went onto the next part of the plan.
Now, Yuna doesn't know what's gotten into her, but she forgot to order the snacks. She planned to enjoy a movie with some snacks tonight, but she somehow overlooked the latter, and only just noticed. She did her best to be positive, feeling like getting herself down would only waste time. She threw on a quick outfit, leaving for the nearest store.
''I need to hurry up. I still have to prep the living room, putting out comfortable pillows and warm blankets. I checked with Milo, she said she'd have lunch with her friends, so that relieves me of making proper lunch. I can just heat up some leftovers, it's high time they're eaten before they go bad'' She got her thoughts organized on her way to the store, while pulling out her shopping list, looking through things she needed.
~Timeskip to when she's back home, almost done with her to do list~
''The sun's setting already? Milo should be home anytime soon, gotta put the last touches before turning the lights off.''
Yuna wraps up any leftover work, putting the dried dishes away, and taking the roses out, and placing them on the table. She fixes herself up a bit, going in for a quick shower, safely assuming Milo wouldn't turn up for another thirty minutes at the very least.
Little did she know, Milo decided to return home early. Her mother emphasized her curfew, so she decided to turn up early just in case. She tried to give her mother a call, but there was no response, so she decided to ask her about it when she got back. Milo always kept a spare key with her, since her father insisted.
The apartment was dark and the lights were off, so Milo thought that may be her mother turned in early, or went out to buy something. She walked further in to see the kitchen illuminated, going to investigate, she found a decently sized bouquet of roses sitting on the table. Milo didn't expect to see it, but she did love roses, so she picked up one of them, taking a whiff of it's fragrant aroma. She knew they were fake, but she couldn't help but admire their beauty.
''MILO!?''
''Mum! You're here!''
Yuna didn't foresee this, but she decided to just go along with her original plan, but a little improvised.
''Happy birthday, my little angel...''
She embraced her daughter, smiling joyfully, greatful for her daughter's happiness and health. Milo returned the embrace, feeling tears welling up in her eyes, threatening to spill.
''Thank you... I'm truly grateful to have you mum!''
Sorry it's kinda late and rushed, I was out all day, and organizing my thoughts was pretty hard. I hope there aren't too many errors.
''Me too Milo, me too!'' Yuna leads Milo to the living room, which was left without lights, since Milo decided that she didn't want to turn them on only to forget them.
What meets Milo's eyes is exactly what she needed after such a long and tiring, yet fun, day.
The sofa was littered with the softest pillows they owned, and her favorite blanket, suitable for the chilly weather. Milo went over to huddle up with her mother on there, smiling giddily at how fluffy everything was.
''What's on for tonight?''
''A movie chosen by the birthday girl, and a mountain of snacks.''
''Ooo! I actually saw this one movie about demons and a main character with a tragic backstory, who's mission is to take them down to save his sister!''
''That movie's a small continuation of the series. The series is till ongoing with three seasons. I don't mind marathoning it with you though! You up for it?''
''Mhm! Definitely!''
They start the first episode, with barely ten minutes in, but Milo's already balling her eyes out.
''T-tanjiro deserved better! He's such a nice character! Why d-did this have to happen to himmm.''
Yuna, also a little moved by the tragedy, but mainly by the effects and graphics, pats her daughter's back reassuringly.
They go through the first season by midnight, and Milo starts dozing off.
''Did you have fun sweetie?''
''Yes, mum. I...-'' a yawn involuntarily interrupts her speech, which leads her to change what she intended to say. ''-should probably turn in and call it a day. The characters were all amazing, but eerily familiar. It was great though.''
''That's a relief then...''
Yuna picks up her daughter, thanking her workout while carrying her to bed, tucking her in and making sure she's comfortable. She reaches out to caress her daughter's cheek, eyes overflowing with warmth.
''No matter how old you grow up to be, you'll always be my dear daughter.''
She places a soft kiss to her forehead, brushing her soft hair off of her face, with great care and gentleness.
''Sleep tight, Milo. My little angel.''
I really hope you like it Kim. I didn't proof read this, because I wanted it to be out as soon as I finished it. Sorry if it's a bit ooc, I'm not the best at character analysis (-_-;)
I'll tag @larz-barz here, because this was the only thing I was able to do for Milo special day, sorry bout that.
Thanks for requesting this Kim, I didn't know what to do for Milo's bday.
We always have a real good time And maybe he sings off-key But that's all right by me, yeah
Thursday, May 15th - 1986
On Eddie’s 20th birthday it rained cats and dogs. There was a light shower during the early morning which stopped at around 10 only to come back with a vengeance after lunch, and by the time the school day had ended, the weather was warm and humid with a sky-obscuring fog that made it seem like it was much later than it actually was. Eddie, as he always did when it rained, offered to take Gareth home so he gave his friend his keys and asked him and Dottie to wait in the van while he finished up a private conversation with Mrs. Vaughn, his Drawing teacher. She was quite impressed with how his portfolio was shaping up, and wanted to know more about the subjects he’d chosen to portray in his art. Some talks were meant to be kept behind closed doors.
Gareth left Dottie at her locker where she was fighting to fit Eddie’s birthday present in her backpack without absolutely destroying the muffin she’d baked for him during Home Ec and headed towards the parking lot to wait for his friends in the safety of the van. Dottie had barely managed to zip up her backpack when a pair of pink sneakers came up to where she was kneeling.
“Do you need help?” a warm, melodic voice asked.
Dottie looked up to find Chrissy Cunningham, the current Queen of Hawkins High, smiling at her like they’d known each other for years. She wasn’t wearing her full cheerleading uniform that day; instead she had chosen cuffed jeans and a lovely cream blouse, her strawberry blonde hair cascading down her shoulders. Wow, Dottie thought without an ounce of shame for ogling. She’s gorgeous. Realizing she had been staring up at the kind (almost) stranger, she quickly stood and threw her backpack over her shoulder.
“Oh, no, thank you! I’ve got it,” Dottie said, and Chrissy smiled even wider if it was even possible.
“You’re Dottie Burke, right? We’re in World History together, you sit with Jeff Patton two seats in front of me?”
“Yup, that’s me! And you’re Chrissy Cunningham, you sit with, um, Melissa?”
“Yes, Melissa Levine,” the blonde’s eyes brightened up, pleased that this conversation was going smoothly. “I know you’re best friends with Eddie so could you give this to him for me?”
Chrissy presented a shiny green gift bag to her. It was carefully sealed with a big transparent sticker from the store where it had been purchased from and a huge silvery bow was tied to the handles. Of all the things she had been expecting her to pull out behind her back, a birthday gift for Eddie hadn’t been in her Top 10 List at all.
“Are you sure? He’ll come back in a sec if you want to give it to him yourself, he’s just talking to a teacher.”
“Yeah, I think he already knows what it is,” Chrissy waved her hand like it wasn’t a big deal. “I’d wait for him but my boyfriend is in the car already so…”
“Oh, yeah, totally. I can give this to Ed for you, don’t worry.”
“Thank you, you’re so nice!” she said, beaming at her. “I’m sorry if I’m coming off too strong, Eddie said we’d get along so I thought “well, what am I waiting for”, right?”
“You’re fine, seriously,” Dottie laughed; Chrissy’s bubbly energy was contagious. “He told me we’d get along too. Something about you liking Queen and owning all the records?”
“Yes! Gosh, I love Queen! Do you? We should hang out sometime, we can listen to them together.”
“Absolutely, yes. I’d love that.”
“Okay, cool! I’ll see you around, okay?”
“Yeah, sure! Have fun on your date!”
“How did you know I’m going on a date?” Chrissy said, mild intrigue on her face.
“You just look really pretty and you mentioned your boyfriend so I thought you might be going on a date with him,” Dottie explained like it was the simplest thing in the world. “I like your makeup.”
“Oh,” she said, stopping for a moment.
Chrissy wasn’t a stranger to people telling her she was pretty. She had grown up going to pageants and being paraded as a doll by her mother but the compliments were always the same and regarding things she didn’t care about, like how big her Mom had teased her hair, and how thin she looked like in that formal gown. No one had ever told her something she did for herself, like her daily makeup, was pretty. She gave Dottie a big toothy smile, genuine and warm.
“Thank you! I like your dress!”
“Thanks, it was my Mom’s. It has pockets!” the brunette said, shoving a hand inside the left pocket of her short black jumper dress to demonstrate.
“I love that! Not enough dresses have pockets, it’s a shame.”
They said their goodbyes again and Chrissy disappeared down the hallway, leaving Dottie to consider that maybe she really did need more girl friends. She loved her Hellfire boys, and of course Erica was great, but she had missed the kind of special warmth female friendships gave - the gentle toughness she’d always admired in her Aunts’ actions. Now that she knew what a real friend was supposed to look like thanks to the guys, she realized that whatever she had thought Jeannie was during her life in New York hadn’t exactly been a good example of true friendship. Dottie wondered if, given enough time, Chrissy could become a real friend. She was, after all, good friends with Eddie already and he seemed like a fine judge of character so far.
“You ready to bounce?” Eddie asked, hurrying down the hallway to where she was still standing.
“Yeah! This is for you, by the way,” Dottie said, giving him the gift bag. “It’s from Chrissy.”
“Chris- damnit, I told her not to do it,” he shook his head, a fond smile gracing his face. He accepted the bag and shoved it inside his backpack to protect it from the rain; he had a pretty good idea of what it was but he’d look at it once they were home. “Come on, let’s go.”
He guided Dottie towards the parking lot with a hand on the back of her bag, keeping her close as they ran out into the rain and towards the dry seats of his van. They were almost there when Eddie noticed someone curled into themselves near the furthest column that supported the overhang roof at the entrance, a figure huddled up on the floor wearing what looked like Gareth’s red plaid shirt. He looked at his van and saw instantly that his friend was not sitting inside waiting for them, and the vehicle wasn’t even on. What the fuck, he thought bitterly, taking note that the door on the driver’s side was covered in what looked like a runny viscous liquid. The rain was washing it away, but the white and light brown shells on the floor were enough to confirm his suspicions. Switching gears quickly, he pulled Dottie under his arm and guided her towards Gareth.
“What’s going on?” she asked, looking up at him, arm up trying to keep the rain out of her face.
“Gareth!” he yelled for an answer, and the younger boy lifted his teary head up from his knees. “Jesus Christ.”
“Oh my god, what happened to you?” Dottie exclaimed, rushing to their friend.
“They were waiting for Eddie. Said it was a birthday present,” he sniffed, lifting his arm to wipe his face with his sleeve and putting it down instantly when he saw it was filthy. He smelled like rotten eggs.
“I’m so sorry, man,” Eddie said, crouching next to him.
“Not your fault,” Gareth shrugged. “You always cover for me so… guess it was time I covered you for once.”
“This has happened before?” Dottie asked, and both boys looked at her like it was common sense. “Who- who did this to you? How many times?”
“It isn’t always eggs,” Gareth sniffed again. “One time they threw mud at Donny, called him a pig. Gave Dustin a swirly a couple of times but they don’t touch Mike anymore since they found out Nancy Wheeler is his sister. Andy is the worst, he, um-” he interrupted himself and looked at Eddie.
“Andy Humphrey,” Eddie sighed. “He put a bunch of racist notes in Jeff’s locker for a couple of months last year. We saw him doing it but Higgins didn’t do shit about it. He’s on the basketball team, always wears that stupid hat.”
“Yeah, I know him,” Dottie said. “He’s in my AP Spanish class, he’s barely passing. He cheated on our last pop quiz, he knows I saw because he winked at me like he was trying to get me on his side.”
“Almost everyone on the basketball team sucks,” Gareth said. “I don’t know what Lucas is doing with them.”
“Lucas?”
“Lucas Sinclair. Erica’s brother?” Eddie explained. “He used to play with us before he decided being a freak wasn’t good enough for him.”
“I mean… I don’t blame him. I smell like a sewer,” Gareth grimaced.
“Okay, come on, let’s get you home,” Dottie said, patting his knee to get him to stand up.
“I’ll just walk, I’m gonna get the van dirty.”
“No way, man, not in this thunderstorm. Get in the back,” Eddie instructed.
The three of them headed back to the van, the rain not relenting for a single second. On the bright side, Eddie’s door wasn’t dirty anymore, clean from the constant water streaming upon the metal. On the other hand, Gareth was soaked and shivering by the time he sat himself on a plastic crate at the back of the van, keeping himself away from the blankets and pillows, windows cracked open to let cool air in and rotten egg smell out. They drove to Gareth’s house in silence, only the occasional sniffling coming from the dirty boy wallowing in his own misery could be heard under the vehicle’s rumbling.
When they arrived and pulled up to Gareth’s garage, Eddie wasn’t expecting Dottie to get out too, leaving behind her backpack tucked under the co-pilot seat. He followed the pair to the front door, heard the keys tinkling against each other as his friends walked inside and hurried up to get out of the rain. In the foyer, Dottie peeled off her cardigan and sneakers before directing Gareth to his bathroom.
“Eddie, can you get a chair from the kitchen?” she asked, already pushing Gareth down the hallway.
Eddie complied with her request, bringing one of the aluminum chairs with pleather seats into the Jack and Jill that connected Gareth’s bedroom with his sister’s. Gareth was peeling his dirty sleeveless shirt and sweatshirt off his body, Dottie kneeling near his feet helping him take his rain soaked shoes off.
“Thanks,” she said, smiling softly at Eddie before looking up at Gareth. “You sit.”
“Why can’t I just take a shower?” he complained, but still sat down on the chair.
“Because you’re not only covered in gunk, there’s eggshells in your hair. Let me get them out and we’ll leave you to shower in peace, okay?” she pulled back the bath curtain and got his shampoo and conditioner, coming to stand next to the sink.
The birthday boy watched her work, carefully picking all the shells out of Gareth’s hair and throwing them into the pink waste bin that was hidden next to the toilet. She got rid of the knots in his hair with a glittery blue plastic comb that clearly belonged to Gretchen, wetting it with warm water between each pass. Eddie could feel something bubbling up his chest, but it wasn’t anything like the usual jealousy he swore he had stopped feeling days ago. No, this was something different, much more deep seated, clawing up his throat and threatening to tear his insides apart leaving no prisoners behind. This was something he’d been ignoring for a very long time, from before he even knew a Gareth Coleman or a Dorothy Burke. This padlock had been sealed shut with rust ages ago, the key long forgotten somewhere no one, not even Eddie, would find it anymore.
Dottie poured water on Gareth’s scalp with her hands, making him shiver once and then giggle at himself for his reaction. She worked the shampoo into his curls, pulling his hair once to make him wince when he made a stupid comment that Eddie wasn’t listening. He watched the suds fall into the pure white porcelain of the sink bowl as she washed them away with the utmost patience and care.
“You should be a hairdresser,” Gareth said, eyes closed while he relaxed into her touch.
“I could never. You know that smell when you walk into a salon? I fucking hate it,” she said, snorting at the end.
When was the last time Eddie had gone to a salon for a haircut? Not since living with Wayne, that’s for sure. The last time he’d had a haircut he hadn’t given himself in his own bathroom was back in middle school, when a neighbor buzzed all his hair off during that horrible lice outbreak he’d told Dottie about. He remembered that before he turned 12, before she passed away calmly in her sleep, his Grandma kept his hair rather short, like it had been that summer he’d spent in her care when he was eight. And before that… Eddie didn’t like to remember before that.
Dottie shook the bottle of conditioner until a small blob hit her palm and began weaving her fingers into Gareth’s curls. They were still chatting quietly, their long haired friend hovering in the hallway near the door. Eight years. Eight years since anyone had touched Eddie’s hair, since anyone that wasn’t himself had run a brush through his curls and snapped the damaged ends off with a pair of sharp scissors. He hated getting haircuts from his Grandma - not because she was bad at doing them, but because she always pulled at the knots a little bit too harshly, muttering about how boys with longer hair were unkempt and unruly. And Eddie loved his Grandma so much, and she loved him so much in return, but in those moments there was no denying that she was his father’s mother, and getting haircuts from her only reminded him of Wyatt Munson calling him a faggot because his curls reached the collar of his school shirt before he dropped him off at a cheap salon and returned five hours later, smelling of booze and nicotine and regrets.
Eddie used to feel so guilty whenever he went to the salon. Wyatt would treat him like absolute shit, and then he’d sob quietly in the chair while a middle aged lady told him things like “boys don’t cry” and “it’s just hair, kid, don’t be a brat”, only for Wyatt to return and ask her if she’d turned his little girl into a proper boy. A while back, when Eddie first got his driver’s license, he drove past that salon on his way to Donny’s family restaurant and felt like he’d won the damn lottery when he saw it had been closed for several years. Fuck that place, he’d thought and promptly sped up.
“Hey,” a hand touched his arm, making him jump lightly. “Where’d you go?”
“Sorry,” he said quickly, blinking a few times and focusing on Dottie’s worried face in front of him. “I think I fell asleep for a second.”
“We’re done so… we can go now,” she said, not pushing him for an answer.
She’d seen that face on him before, back when they were arguing about his moldy ceiling, and immediately decided they weren’t going to have this conversation in front of Gareth. The younger boy had a small towel on his head like a nun’s headdress to stop his curls from dripping all over the floor as he gathered his dirty clothes and walked past them towards the laundry room.
“Sorry about all this,” said Gareth, standing under his front door’s frame.
“Wasn’t your fault, man. Sorry you got caught in the crossfire,” Eddie reassured him, waiting for Dottie to finish putting on her sneakers.
“Better me than you.”
“Tell you what, why don’t you pick the movie tomorrow? Anything you want.”
“Anything?” he asked, mischief glinting in his eyes.
“Just… don’t pick anything stupid, okay? The Boogey Man sucked ass.”
“You have no fucking taste,” Gareth complained, rolling his eyes.
“Wait, hold on, are we gonna watch a horror film?” Dottie asked in the direction of the younger boy.
“It’s tradition, we always watch horror movies on our birthdays.”
“Can we not do that this time? You know I hate horror. We can do a thriller, that’s like… horror-adjacent, right?”
“Horror-adjac… Dude,” Gareth turned to Eddie, seeking an ally.
It’s not that Eddie was dying to watch a horror film, he really wasn’t. He was happy to watch whatever most of the time, like when Jeff had insisted on watching Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone for some weird reason and he’d gone along for the ride because, well, any movie was still a movie. Eddie loved stories, the more outlandish the better. He wasn’t about to complain about two hours of mindless entertainment, regardless of the subject of the VHS tape in the player. Caught between his two friends, one who looked at him with exasperation at even suggesting a change of plans and the other one with the cutest goddamned pout and rounded eyes he had ever seen, well, he was only human. If Jesus had stumbled, why wouldn’t he do it too?
“Maybe we can skip the horror this time,” he said.
“Come on, man, don’t let her peer-pressure you!”
“Peer-pressure? God, you’re such a little-”
“Okay, okay, calm down, Jesus,” Eddie lifted his hands, getting between them. “How about this? We do a double feature. You each pick one movie and you can’t complain about what the other one chooses, alright? It’s my birthday, don’t make me uninvite you.”
“But-”
“Take it or leave it, Gareth, it’s my final offer.”
“Fine,” Gareth grumbled.
“Thank you,” Dottie said, still looking apprehensive but not wanting to push the argument further.
This was a tradition she hadn’t been a part of since its inception and she wasn’t going to fight her way in when they were so graciously holding the door open for her. Friends do stuff they don’t enjoy to make other friends happy sometimes, it’s okay. They’d do it for me. I’ll just… suck it up and watch the floor for two hours, she thought as they said their goodbyes and ran under the rain to get to Eddie’s van. He was excitedly going on about the cake Wayne had gotten for him on the way to the trailer, and Dottie couldn’t find it in herself to care about what horrifying movie Gareth was gonna subject her too when Eddie looked so happy to spend his special day with his Uncle and her.
Tumblr media
“Wayne, we’re home!” Eddie yelled, trying to put his key in to open his front door.
Dottie was standing very still in front of Eddie, his chest to her back and arms on either side of her while he wrestled with his keys, shielding her from the storm with his body. The copious raindrops falling on them pinged off the leather jacket that was keeping him cozy and dry, soaking his hair that curtained Dottie’s head from above. She was holding both their backpacks against her chest, trying to protect them and their contents from the rain.
“Wayne!” he yelled again, hitting the door twice with his fist.
“Hold on, I’m coming,” the older man replied from the inside, hurrying up to let them in. "Where were you?"
"Got held up at school," said Eddie, guiding Dot in and closing the door quickly behind his back before shedding his wet jacket. "Talked to that teacher I told you about last night. She said I have talent."
"Coulda told you that myself," Wayne smiled at him, pulling his big boy into a hug and patting his back. "Happy birthday, Ed."
"Thanks, Wayne," Eddie melted into his Uncle. They didn't hug often, less so now that he wasn't a little kid anymore, but if you asked him, his Uncle Wayne gave the best hugs in the entire world because whenever he gave you one, he definitely meant it. "Can we have cake now?"
"Get the candles," Wayne jerked his head towards the kitchen where a set of barely used birthday candles were waiting in the bottom drawer ready to grant a new wish.
While Eddie busied himself putting the candles on a small chocolate cake, Dottie cleared the coffee table, setting his gifts on the floor. There were three presents: Chrissy's shiny green bag that had gotten a bit smushed in Eddie's backpack, a thin rectangle in bright blue paper, and a little package smaller than a hand. Wayne added two to the pile wrapped in the same red paper; one looked soft, the other one was a square box. Dottie's funfetti muffin ended up with its own candle next to the cake.
"Light me up, princess," Eddie said, pointing to a BIC lighter that had been abandoned in the coffee table bowl at some point.
"I can't," Dottie admitted, looking embarrassed. "I don't know how to use that kind of lighter, the flick thing scares me."
"The flick thing?"
"You know, the thingy you have to roll with your thumb? That scrapes something inside and sparks up?"
"The sparkwheel?"
"I don't know what it's called!" Eddie held back a grin. "Don't laugh at me, I don't like how close the spark is to the finger. It's a perfectly reasonable fear, I don't want to burn myself!"
"No, yeah, absolutely. You're totally right" he said, fighting a chuckle. God, she's so fucking cute. He reached into a kitchen drawer and retrieved a small matchbox. “Here, use these.”
“The Hideout,” she read aloud on the front of the box. “That’s where you guys play on Tuesdays, right?”
“Yeah, they have a big bowl of these on the bar. I grab a couple every few weeks, haven’t bought real matches in years.”
“Very smart,” she said, lighting the two candles at the same time Wayne found his old camera tucked away in their storage closet.
Eddie knelt in front of the coffee table, closing his eyes with only one wish in mind. Dottie and Wayne sang to him and he smiled, the sudden flash of the camera in his Uncle’s hands painting his eyelids pink for a brief second. His 19th birthday had been tainted with the knowledge that he was going to be held back for the second time in a row. Wayne had taken him to a diner that night; they’d gotten pancakes for dinner and Eddie had cried and apologized for being such a goddamn failure. The eldest Munson had simply let his tears dry before he’d said, very matter-of-factly: I didn’t finish high school, do you think I’m a failure? What’s important is that you keep tryin’ and see things through even if they get hard. Are you a quitter, Ed?
Please, let ‘86 be my year, Eddie thought as hard as he could, sending his prayer to the universe before he opened his eyes and blew both candles out with one single breath. Dottie clapped and hollered, making them laugh. Wayne nudged her side with his elbow, nodding once in his nephew’s direction.
“Come on, you two. Gimme a nice smile,” he lifted the camera again.
Dottie hurried to sit next to Eddie and he didn’t waste a second pulling her to him, cheeks pressed against each other’s. She smiled brightly, the muffin she’d made for him in her hands like a delicate flower, and his arms around her waist, tongue out in a funny face. Wayne committed the memory to film before Dottie lifted herself up onto her knees, making grabby hands at him, Eddie still holding onto her.
“I’ll take one of you two, Mr. Wayne!” she offered.
“How about we take a group picture?” he said, sitting on the couch behind them and turning the camera around.
The two teens huddled up at his feet, his nephew giving him instructions to frame everyone better (“You gotta go higher, Wayne, half your head will be out of the picture!”). After the flash went off, Dottie went to find a knife to cut the cake while Eddie tore into his gifts, starting with Wayne’s packages. He seemed to already know what the soft looking one was, but still ripped the paper with gusto, a childlike glint in his eyes.
Wayne’s gifts had clearly been picked from a thrift shop, but that didn’t damp Eddie’s excitement in the slightest. He thanked his Uncle profusely for his two new shirts and boxy jean shorts for the summer before moving onto the mystery box which turned out to be a thermos flask with a slightly faded Snoopy print.
“No way!” he said, gleefully. “I’ve been trying to get one of these for ages!”
“I know,” Wayne said, proudly. “Heard you yappin’ about it so I asked Loretta to hold one for me if she ever saw them. Said they got a few of them a couple of months ago so I went and snatched one for you.”
“A couple of months ago? Where did you hide it all this time?”
“Under the seat in my truck,” he laughed, and Dottie was reminded once again of how similar the Munson men truly were.
“Gonna start checking down there around Christmas,” Eddie said, narrowing his eyes. He passed the flask to Dottie to examine who traded it for a plate of cake.
“This is really cute, Mr. Wayne. Wish mine was pretty like this one.”
“You got one of these?” Eddie asked.
“Yeah, my Grandpa gave me his old one a few years ago. It looks so ugly, it’s like… plaid? But it keeps water cool in the summer so I can’t really complain. He got it for his fishing trips but he never used it so I got it instead. The perks of being his only grandchild,” she waved her fingers.
“You don’t have cousins?” Wayne asked, digging into his own piece of cake while Eddie picked a new present to open.
“No, both my parents are only children. All my Aunts and Uncles are their friends. I’ve got a big family, but I’m not blood related to any of them.”
“Oh, shit,” Eddie muttered, his attention on the long thin box in his hands.
Chrissy’s gift had turned out to be a red tie. The fabric was soft and silky, slightly shiny, and the tie itself was on the thinner side. There was a simple white card in the bag, it only said “For: Eddie, From: Chrissy” but she’d dotted the I’s with tiny hearts. He caressed the side of the box lightly, staring at it in wonder. He’d never owned a tie, much less one that looked as expensive as this one. When he’d asked Chrissy for advice on what to wear for prom, he’d never imagined she’d take it upon herself to make sure he was presentable. He’d have to figure out a way to make it up to her for her birthday, maybe Dottie would know how to help.
“That’s nice,” Wayne said, craning his neck to see into the box. “That one yours, Dot?”
“No, this one’s Chrissy’s,” she replied.
“Who’s Chrissy?”
“Chrissy Cunningham,” Eddie said, realizing he’d never talked to his Uncle about his most unlikely friend. “We’re in Sociology together.”
Dottie knew he was lying; Eddie only shared Sociology with Jeff but it wasn’t like he could tell Wayne he’d become friends with a cheerleader by selling her weed, could he? She noticed how suspicious his Uncle was by his statement and decided to help him out.
“I’m in World History with her, she’s really kind,” Dottie said, making Eddie look up at her too. “We were talking about Queen when you were with Mrs. Vaughn today, she said she liked my dress.”
“She did?”
“Yeah! She liked the pockets,” she smiled at him. “You gonna wear this for prom?”
“I think that’s why she got it for me,” Eddie chuckled. “I told her we’re all wearing Hellfire colors. Gareth got a red bowtie the other day.”
“I still haven’t found a dress I like or that fits right,” she huffed. “Dad said we’re gonna have to go to Indianapolis, we’ve been to every shop in Hawkins already.”
“A lot of shops closed last year ‘cause of the mall,” Wayne said, clearing up the cake plates. “Never reopened after the fire. Damn shame.”
“Can I open these ones?” Eddie interrupted, excited about the two other presents he had left on the pile.
“Sure!”
“Any special order?”
“No, they’re separate from each other.”
He decided to open the bigger one first, fairly confident about it being a book. He tore the paper to find a hardcover notebook, black with an elastic to keep it closed. It looked fancy, but not particularly special, at least not until he opened it. It was sheet music, 14 five-line staffs on every off-white page, binded and with a pocket on the back. He turned to the first sheet, blank, no lines but with a note written in familiar black ink. For my favorite rockstar, from your darling Dottie. With a little daisy at the end. He stared at it for a minute that never seemed to end and looked up at her, big rounded eyes pushing his eyebrows under his fringe.
“You were talking about wanting to write more songs for Corroded Coffin last week at practice, so I thought you might need a place to keep everything organized,” she explained, voice shy and a little soft.
“Dot, I-”
“Open the other one.”
Wordlessly, he grabbed the small box, instantly recognizing it as a cassette case. He removed the paper, aware that Wayne was watching them from behind the kitchen bar while he brewed some coffee, and turned the transparent case in his hand. 1986 - E&D was written on the front, colorful stickers decorating the plastic. The song list inside only had one entry: Hot Patootie - Meatloaf (RHPS).
“Just one song?” he asked, confused.
“I thought we could fill it up together. See, I wrote 1986 on this one, but we can make a new one for every year we’re friends so when we get old, we can remember what we were doing that year by the songs we chose. Like a musical scrapbook.”
“Fuck, I love you,” Eddie said, launching himself from the floor and tackling her to the carpet, dissolving into giggles as she fought to sit back down.
“Stop- Jesus, Ed- I don’t like tickles, stop!” she pleaded, writhing on the floor like a worm, thankful that she was wearing colorful leggings under her skirt.
“Who doesn’t like tickles?” he lifted himself up onto hands and knees above her, ceasing the attack but still caging her under his body.
“I get nervous if I can’t breathe right,” she explained, hair fanning out like a halo around her head. Eddie felt his knees go weak. “Also, it makes me feel like I’m gonna pee myself and that’s so embarrassing.”
“Okay, gotcha. No tickling,” he pulled them both into a sitting position and smiled, wrapping one arm around her. “Thank you, I love my gifts. And I already know what song I wanna add next to the mixtape.”
“Do tell.”
“Nope,” he shook his head dramatically. “You’ll find out when it’s done.”
“Fine,” she rolled her eyes, turning to where Wayne was watching them, hiding a smile behind his mug.
“Happy birthday, son,” he said, raising his coffee to his mouth, and Eddie thought it might have been the happiest of them all.
After dishes had been washed and the rest of the cake had been put away until a certain birthday boy got the munchies at midnight, Eddie and Dottie decided to sit on the porch just outside his bedroom and leave Wayne to his devices. They lounged side by side on the old ratty couch, him working on his portfolio and her reading Pride and Prejudice out loud in an attempt to get him to finish the last book left in their compulsory reading list before finals week was upon them.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounded families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?”
The heavy rain hitting the tin roof provided the perfect ambiance for Eddie’s limbs to start feeling heavy and his hand to begin missing the lines he was trying to stay between while he shaded his latest piece. He closed his sketchbook and slid it through his open window to keep it dry in the safety of his bedroom, quickly returning to the couch to continue hearing the tales of the Bennet sisters. He laid down on the cushions, legs hanging off the armrest and head comfortably pillowed by Dottie's lap.
“Come, Darcy,” said he, “I must have you dance. I hate to see you standing about by yourself in this stupid manner. You had much better dance.”
“I certainly shall not. You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner. At such an assembly as this, it would be insupportable. Your sisters are engaged, and there is no another woman in the room whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with.”
“I would not be so fastidious as you are,” cried Bingley, “for a kingdom! Upon my honour, I never met with so many pleasant girls in my life as I have this evening; and there are several of them, you see, uncommonly pretty.”
“You are dancing with the only handsome girl in the room,” said Mr. Darcy, looking at the eldest Miss Bennet.
What a lovely voice, Eddie thought about Dottie, closing his eyes and letting his impressive imagination create Austen's lavish world behind his eyelids. It wasn't too high-pitched, nor too low, with the cadence of someone who already knows the story they are reading and is aware of where to pause for dramatic effect. This Bingham fellow seems nice. Is this a love triangle-angle?, he wondered. Dottie's voice turned sweet when reading Jane, demure when reading Charlotte, and bratty when reading Lydia. She would be kind when she read Bingham, disdainful when Caroline and solemn when Darcy. But Eddie's favorite so far was her Lizzie voice, which turned sensible and self-assured, yet playful and naïve. He supposed it was because she used her own voice for her most preferred Bennet sister.
“Pride,” observed Mary, who piqued herself upon the solidity of her reflections, “is a very common failing, I believe. By all that I have ever read, I am convinced that it is very common indeed, that human nature is particularly prone to it, and that there are very few of us who do not cherish a feeling of self-complacency on the score of some quality or other, real or imaginary. Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity to what we would have others think of us.”
“If I were as rich as Mr. Darcy,” cried a young Lucas, who came with his sisters, “I should not care how proud I was. I would keep a pack of foxhounds, and drink a bottle of wine every day.”
A page was turned, and Dottie’s hand that had been propped up on her armrest fell onto her lap, where it began playing with Eddie's hair. She had touched it before, albeit briefly, but never had she had the opportunity to absent-mindedly run her fingers through his curls like this. They were so much softer than she had expected. She continued this soothing motion, and Eddie kept his eyes closed, leaving her to wonder if his unusual stillness was due to him falling asleep under her touch. She stopped, not wanting to disturb him when his arm shot up and his hand curled around her wrist.
"Please," he muttered in a broken voice. "Keep going."
Eddie couldn't remember the last time he'd gotten a haircut at a salon, but he also couldn't remember the last time anyone had brushed their fingers through the strands that had grown exponentially since middle school. He couldn't recall anyone helping him wash it, blow drying it for him, pushing it out of his face. And now Dottie was showing him the type of affection and care he'd craved for since before he learned how to tie his own shoes, and the rusty padlock with the missing key was beginning to break with the slightest amount of brute force applied to it.
"Please," Eddie pleaded, and Dottie closed the book, pulling her wrist out of his hand.
"Wait here," she said, moving her thighs so he'd let her get up and promptly disappeared into the trailer.
I've finally done it, he berated himself. I finally scared her off. But she reappeared quickly carrying a cushion and a rounded brush, sitting once again on the ratty couch. She opened her legs and put the cushion on the floor between them, motioning for him to sit down. Eddie complied without questioning it, his shoulders grazing against the colorful nylon leggings that covered her inner thighs while he faced the trailer park currently plunged into darkness by the storm. The first gentle but firm pull of the plastic bristles on his scalp made him shiver. The second one broke the dam.
Dottie brushed his hair in silence, being extra careful when she encountered a knot, undoing it slowly and patiently. Eddie sobbed without fear of judgment, because even though they weren't talking about it, he knew that she understood. How could she not, growing up with a single father who had never once in his life styled long hair before hers began to grow past her shoulders? So she brushed, and he cried, and they let go of yet another invisible weight together. When she put the brush down on the cushions, Eddie expected her to say something to ask him about what was happening. Instead, he felt her fingers running once, twice through the entire length of his hair, parting a small section near the top to his left on the third time. Dottie began braiding the strands into a thin plait, securing it with a small colorful plastic hair tie, the kind Eddie knew she always carried in her bag and had used a couple of times to pull her short curls into low pigtails.
She finished the braid, and moved onto the next one, right below the first one. Dottie wove strand with strand until she had three braids on either side of his head, all thinner than her own pinky. She pulled them back into a ponytail with the rest of his hair and brushed the ends for good measure one more time before dropping her weight on the floor between Eddie and the couch. Her arms curled around his waist, his chest to his back, her hands finding his curled into tight fists on his lap.
“You look like a viking now,” she said, softly.
“Thank you,” he replied, voice frail and small but full of meaning. She leaned forward to press a chaste kiss to the base of his neck, just above his shirt, and he bit back another sob.
“Happy birthday, Ed,” she muttered, lips still pressed to his skin like she wanted to get the words permanently etched into it.
Dottie did not go back to reading out loud and Eddie didn’t fish his sketchbook from his room for the remainder of the evening. They simply sat together on the porch, tangled with one another as usual, and watched the rain fall and heard the thunder rumble until it was time for her to go home. They didn’t say anything about what had happened, but there was no need. Another padlock laid at their feet, and they weren’t afraid of busting them open anymore.
Friday, May 16th - 1986
“Fred? Fred!” Dottie called, pushing the doors to the Hawkins High newspaper room in a hurry. “Fred, are you here?”
“N-no, he’s- he went to see the nurse!” a familiar voice came from under the stairs.
Sitting on the floor and hiding between a few boxes that contained blank bundles of paper, was Nancy Wheeler. Her pretty calf-length pastel rainbow skirt covered her bent legs, concealing her feet from anyone who walked by. She had been crying, brown mascara staining the skin under her eyes but she clearly wasn’t anymore, face dry and eyes only slightly swollen. When she noticed Dottie coming to kneel next to her, she quickly hid the paper she was holding in her cardigan pocket. They didn’t know each other very well yet, were friendly at best, but Dottie knew that Nancy didn’t have many friends in school. She was highly regarded as a good student, on track to being the valedictorian with a bright future ahead but she could be a bit of a loner when she wasn’t being followed around by Fred Benson or another newspaper club member.
Nancy often chose to spend most of her time in the library studying or working on something for The Weekly Streak, building her journalism portfolio to parade around in search of internships when she left Hawkins for college in Boston. Dottie wasn’t one to gossip with anyone that wasn’t named Gareth Coleman, but Fred liked to talk. On one occasion when the junior was assisting Dottie with an urgent task, he’d babbled on and on about Nancy, her late friend Barb, the fact that she’d been considered Hawkins royalty for a period of time while she dated some popular guy who was captain of the swimming team, and how she’d dumped him rather publicly at a Halloween party and gotten together with known weirdo Jonathan Byers. She tried to steer Fred away from the topic at the time, but he was undeterred: it was clear the boy held some sort of candle for the pretty senior, and who was Dottie to tell him to snuff it out? She’d only known them for less than a month. Still, with the knowledge that Nancy was a bit of an outcast after the tragic death of her best friend, and coupled with the fact that she was Mike’s sister, Dottie couldn’t pretend like she hadn’t seen her distress.
“You okay?” she asked, giving her editor-in-chief enough room to answer however she wanted.
“Yeah, it’s… it’s nothing,” Nancy rolled her shiny blue eyes, waving a hand around. “Everything’s fine.”
“I was dropping by to leave these for Fred,” Dottie explained, showing her the stack of papers she was holding. “Is he okay?”
“Yes, he was just complaining about a headache. Nothing serious.”
“Good, okay. I’ll leave this on his station and we can go get a soda. Would that be alright?”
“You want to get a soda with me?” Nancy said, a soft smile gracing her lips.
“Of course! We can share M&Ms if you want too. I’ve known you for a month and all I know about you is that you’re going to Emerson and that Dustin thinks you’re a badass.”
“He called me badass?” she laughed, getting to her feet and wiping her eyes with the back of her hand.
“God, the kid loves you. Mike says he had a crush on you when they were younger.”
“Ugh, he did,” Nancy said, remembering the moment fondly. “Dustin is probably my favorite out of all my brother’s friends.”
“He’s so nice. His Mom did a great job with him.”
“Have you met Claudia? She’s quite the character,” she confided as the two girls climbed up the stairs and headed into the empty hallways side by side.
Nancy was funny. That was something Dottie hadn’t been expecting. She was polite and reserved, yes, but funny in the way people who notice things others don’t are. She carried their conversation well, asked Dottie questions to get to know her better while she answered the ones directed at her with ease. Her favorite color was pink, she liked all her classes except Math, was really excited about the release of Top Gun and was going to go see it with her Mom, Karen. She preferred Sprite to Coca-Cola, and in her opinion, the best M&Ms were the red ones, even though they all tasted the same. They sat on a bench just outside the cafeteria and talked about trivial things until they ran out of topics to explore.
“I wish we would have done this earlier,” Dottie said, popping a green candy into her mouth. “You’re really cool, Nance.”
“Thanks,” she said, chuckling shyly. “I think you might be collecting Wheeler siblings at this point. Should I let my Mom know you’re available to babysit Holly?”
“I actually have a lot of experience with babysitting. Give me until finals are done and if you need me, I’m there.”
“Speaking of babysitting, Mike mentioned you’re tutoring Eddie Munson.”
“I’m not really tutoring him, just… helping him keep his focus. We’re good friends.”
“I know. Mike,” Nancy said, like that explained everything and it actually did. “Actually, he… he mentioned you gave him advice a few times. About his girlfriend?”
“Yeah, I remember. Why are teenage boys so scared of their own feelings?”
“Tell me about it,” she scoffed, but immediately turned shy and rigid. “Could you… would it be okay if I asked you for advice too? It’s just- you are impartial in this situation and I think that’s what I need right now.”
“Sure, how can I help?” Dottie turned to her.
Nancy explained that she’d gotten a letter from her boyfriend, Jonathan. Ex-boyfriend, actually, but neither of them were good at the ex part. They had had a big argument over the phone after Spring break when post California-visit, Mike had accidentally let it slip that Jonathan didn’t want to go to Emerson with Nancy and had chosen community school instead. She hadn’t been upset about him changing his plans, but it definitely had hurt to know he’d been lying to her all this time, telling her he’d applied when he hadn’t, stringing her along for months on end. Dottie listened to Nancy retelling how she’d broken up with him, worried about if there were maybe other things he’d been hiding from her, and how Jonathan hadn’t tried to argue back once. He’d called two weeks later from a payphone outside the pizza parlor his new best friend worked at, high off his mind, crying and begging for her to take him back. Nancy had firmly said no, but that she was willing to talk more when he wasn’t on drugs.
This had happened mid-April, and Jonathan hadn’t called since. Instead, a letter addressed to Nancy had arrived that same Friday - four full pages of him not exactly asking for forgiveness, but explaining his reasoning in regards to his lies. Nancy didn’t share all the details, but the essential part was that as the eldest son of a single parent, he felt a sense of duty towards his siblings and didn’t want to move away so soon after they started high school in a new town where they had virtually to no friends and were getting bullied just for daring to exist. She did mention that his new sister Jane, Mike’s girlfriend, was still dealing with the loss of her adoptive father, so that situation on top of the move wasn’t helping in the slightest.
“I just don’t know what to do,” Nancy said, at the end of her long monologue. “If he’d told me all of this before, I would have understood him. He’s right, they are all having a hard time but did he have to lie about it for an entire year?”
“I think both sides are valid,” Dottie said, offering her the last candy in the package. “He’s not wrong for wanting to help his Mom and his siblings out, but he went about it in a really shitty way and you’re allowed to feel betrayed by it.”
“Am I?”
“Yes! Nancy, he lied to you! It was with the best of intentions, but he still lied. If you feel like that’s a hard limit in your relationship, you should tell him that, and he should respect it. And you. He should always respect you.”
“He does, he’s… I love him.”
“You can love someone and be upset with them at the same time. Just tell him how you feel instead of avoiding each other because you don’t want to get into a fight. Trust your instincts on this one.”
“You’re right. I’m gonna call him this weekend, and if we’re done, we’re done, but at least we handled it like adults.”
“That’s the spirit!” Dottie cheered her on. “Everything will turn out okay, I have faith in you both.”
“Thank you,” Nancy said, smiling. “I really needed the pep talk.”
“Anytime. I gotta run now, but I liked hanging out with you.”
“Me too. It’s been a while since I’ve done the whole… girl talk thing.”
“Can’t imagine Mike being into that, no,” Dottie said, and Nancy laughed. “See you on Monday?”
“Yes. Monday. Good luck with Hellfire!”
“Good luck with Jonathan. Fight for your love, girl!” she declared dramatically while she sped away.
Nancy watched her go with a curious smile on her face. She’d have to keep an eye on Dorothy Burke from now on, but that could wait. It was Friday, Fred might be down for the count, and she had a newspaper edition to perfect before Monday morning.
Dottie had been to Family Video only twice since moving to Hawkins, once with her Dad and once with the boys, both times during a weekend. When Donny pulled into the parking lot that Friday night after Hellfire, she was fully expecting to see the same greasy dude that smelled like Cheetos she’d seen the last two times but saw instead a pretty tall girl that had her eyes glued to a black and white movie playing on the overhead TV. Gareth immediately ran to the horror section in search for the first part of their double feature, and Dottie approached the girl timidly while Donny smoked outside, waiting for Eddie and Jeff to arrive with warm pizza and fresh ice cream.
“Hi, welcome to Family Video, how can I help you?” the taller girl smiled with tired eyes, the kind you only got if you worked retail.
“Hi! I wanted to rent The Rocky Horror Picture Show if you have it?”
“Yeah, of course, follow me,” she said, lifting the counter and guiding her towards the Musicals section. Another boy was restocking shelves labeled as Comedy next to them.
“Hi there,” he said, waving a VHS case in the air.
“Hi,” Dottie said and turned to where the girl was moving movies around, a frown on her face. “Did someone else beat me to it?”
“No, no, I know it’s here… Just can’t figure out where I put it.”
“What are you looking for?” the boy said, coming to stand above the girl, craning his neck to see the stands.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The cover’s a mouth with red lips.”
“Oh, yeah, I moved it to the Horror section,” he said, brows bunching in the middle.
“Why did you move it? It’s a musical, dingus.”
“How would I know? It says horror in the title!”
“God, you’re hopeless,” the girl shook her head, and Dottie snorted at their antics.
They bickered all the way to the Horror section, Gareth looking up with a confused expression at the scene in front of him. The tall girl moved around him with ease, finding instantly what she was looking for.
“Here you go, sorry about that,” she said, giving the VHS to Dottie.
“You picked a horror movie?” Gareth asked.
“No, it’s a musical.”
“We’re not watching a musical.”
“Why not? It’s really fun, it’s about-”
“Dot, we’re not watching lovey-dovey bullshit on movie night. Come on, pick something else.”
“No!” Dottie put her foot down. “Eddie said we both got one pick and we couldn’t complain about what the other person chose. Jeff hasn’t seen Rocky Horror and I want him to know where Hot Patootie comes from if he’s gonna be singing it for me every week!”
“It’s from a musical? Eddie said it was a Meatloaf song!”
“It is!” the tall girl interrupted with a bright smile. “Meatloaf plays Eddie in it, it’s his only song in the whole movie but it’s a classic.”
“You’ve seen it?” Dottie asked, eyes lighting up at the discovery of a kindred spirit.
“Y-yeah, it’s really good. I love how it constantly breaks the fourth wall, I mean, talking to the audience through a narrator must be one of the most well known resources in theater but it must be so fun to experience in the stage show-”
“Oh my god, yes!” Dottie interrupted her, turning her entire body to face her newest friend. “The stage show is so cool, I saw it twice at, like, the shittiest community theater ever but they killed it every single time. The material is just so good!”
“You saw it live? Where?”
“New York, I used to live there.”
“That’s so cool,” the girl said, her eyes wide.
“Okay, so maybe you two can have your own movie night and watch your girly musical together,” Gareth said, getting back to the topic. “-but we’re not gonna watch that tonight. Birthdays are for horror movies.”
“It says horror in the title, dude,” the other boy said, making Dottie chuckle. Gareth looked at her like she was betraying him.
“Come on, it’s really not bad. You’re gonna like it, I promise. There’s… there’s sex and boobies in it!”
A tense silence spread through Family Video, Dottie painfully aware that she had said something extremely weird in front of people she didn’t know. It was okay that she was using the tantalizing idea of breasts to lure Gareth into saying yes to her movie choice, but she didn’t need to make it so damn obvious she was excited about the prospect of seeing them too. The taller girl was staring at her with a wild blush spreading from her chest up to her ears, but perhaps the other boy’s reactions were much more disconcerting. He lifted his eyebrows in surprise, stared at the back of his friend’s head, and then turned to Dottie with a huge grin on his face.
“If you don’t rent this movie, I will. We’re definitely watching it tonight, right, Rob?” he said, and the girl began giggling, her face in her hands.
“You’re such an idiot, Steve,” she gritted out through her laughter.
“Really, man, you’re a dumbass if you miss some boobs because you don’t wanna watch a musical with friends.”
“You’re gonna like it, G, I swear. It was made for the freaks,” Dottie insisted, sharing a grateful smile with the boy who was now known as Steve.
“Ugh, okay, fine! But if you’re picking a dumb musical, I can pick whatever I want and you can’t say no because you’re scared.”
“Those were the rules, we don’t complain about each other’s picks.”
“Not even if I pick The Exorcist?”
“Well… No, it’s- it’s okay. You can pick whatever you want,” she said, but looked very daunted by the idea.
“You sure?”
“She said yes, man,” Steve said, putting his hands on his hips like a suburban dad. “Are you gonna rent these two or do you want one more? You can rent up to three every time.”
“Two’s okay, thank you, Steve,” Dottie said, grabbing The Exorcist off the shelf and taking both VHS cases to the counter.
The four of them moved to the main area and Steve busied himself checking them out, asking Gareth for his information to enter into the computer. Dottie was distracted while she looked at the small selection of candy they offered, the tall girl following her movement with her eyes. She knew she’d seen her before, probably at school but who was she? She mentioned she lived in New York…
“You’re Dorothy, right?” she said suddenly.
“How did you know?”
“People used to talk about you a lot back in January. Then you kinda dropped off everyone’s radar.”
“Yeah,” she grimaced. “Kinda joined the outcasts so…”
“I’m in band, I get it.”
“What do you play?”
“Trumpet. Been playing for twelve years.”
“Wow, that’s impressive,” Dottie said, thinking that she hadn’t done anything in her life with that kind of consistency. “It’s really nice to meet you, Robin.”
“Wha- oh. Oh! My tag!” Robin laughed at herself, looking down at the pins on her vest. “You know, I heard there’s a place in Indy where they do Rocky Horror showings once a month if you ever want to go. I don’t drive b-but I bet Steve can take us.”
“That sounds great, yeah! Is he cool with, y’know, nudity and stuff?”
“Oh, yeah. Absolutely! He doesn’t mind. He’s cool. Yeah, Steve’s… really cool.”
“Aw, you actually love me,” Steve said, giving away the fact that he’d been eavesdropping, and Robin hit him with a magazine.
“You two are really cute,” Dottie said, smiling at them. “How long have you been together?”
“We’re not-”
“Ew, that’s not-”
“We’re friends,” said Steve.
“Best friends,” added Robin.
“Strictly platonic.”
“With a capital P.”
“Oh. Well, I guess retail bonds you forever,” Dottie laughed, and Steve chuckled.
“You have no idea,” he said, looking over at Robin with a knowing expression.
“Okay, can you stop flirting with King Steve now? You’re grossing me out,” Gareth deadpanned, making Dottie frown.
“I’m not- I’m sorry, I wasn’t-”
“It’s cool. We’re all friends here,” Steve said. “Enjoy your movie night!”
“Thank you, bye! Bye, Robin,” she waved at the girl, who waved back before Dottie grabbed Gareth’s arm and pulled him towards the door. “What the fuck is wrong with you?”
“Ow, you’re hurting me,” Gareth said, when she shoved him outside, Donny holding the door open for them.
“Don’t know what you did, but you probably deserved it,” he said, letting the door close behind them, muffling their voices from inside the store.
Steve and Robin watched them get into Donny’s car and pull out behind a beat up brown Chevy van, both vehicles disappearing down the road together. When the tail lights were no longer able to be seen, they turned to each other with curious expressions.
“Was she-” Robin asked.
“I think she was, yeah.”
“Huh.”
“What did I tell you?” Steve said, going back to where he had been restocking before all the commotion. “Boobies.”
“Stop saying boobies!”
Tumblr media
When Dottie asked to sit next to him to watch The Exorcist, Eddie imagined a scenario where she’d be a little bit scared and seek him out for comfort. After all, cuddling on a couch wasn’t something they’d never done before, blurring the line between friendly touches and something more every day that went by. She suggested eating first, putting the movie in later, and no one complained about the request, eager to stuff their faces after a long day of school and extracurriculars on top. Jeff’s basement was a cozy hangout spot with a door that led to a side entrance, perfect for sneaking out for a smoke between his mother’s carefully manicured rose bushes. The tan carpet and wooden walls were welcoming, if not slightly tacky, and the space had been filled in with a big couch and two armchairs, a huge TV where Jeff’s dad liked to watch football, and a great sound system that had probably been top-of-the-line ten years prior. They gotten their fill of cheese and soda, Whitesnake and Black Sabbath playing in the background, and then retreated to their seats for the movie: Eddie, Dottie, and Jeff on the couch, Donny to Jeff’s left as far away from the TV as he could sit, and Gareth on the remaining Lay-Z-Boy to Eddie’s right, bowl of popcorn for himself on his lap.
As soon as the movie started, it was clear Eddie’s expectations had been sorely mistaken. Dottie started stiff as a board between the two boys, slowly sinking into the couch as the minutes ticked, head hidden behind her knees. Jeff had a bit of success in getting her to relax when he attempted to tell her every time it was safe to look up, but after a miscalculation of the length of a scene involving various medical procedures, her eyes never went beyond the coffee table again. Gareth and Donny’s constant commentary helped ease the uncomfortable air in the room, but it was clear to Eddie that Dottie was not enjoying this situation one bit. Forgoing any ideas of romance, he pulled her into his side, letting her bury her head into his shirt as she tried to ignore the sounds coming from the TV while Regan thrashed on a hospital bed calling for her mother.
Donny looked at Eddie pointedly during a quiet moment, but he pretended not to see it, choosing instead to rub big circles on Dottie’s back in an attempt to calm down her heart rate, beating wildly against the side of his chest like it was trying to get out of her body. Progressively through the 122 minutes that the movie lasted, she pressed more and more of herself against Eddie trying to shield herself from the horrors on the screen, and truthfully, if he hadn’t been so distracted trying to comfort her, he would have been terrified too. By the time Regan was gilding down the stairs on all fours, Jeff was covering half his face with a decorative pillow. When she began hurting herself with a crucifix, even Donny who had been somewhat unaffected until that moment let out a perturbed “Jesus Christ”. By the time the actual exorcism had began, Donny looked like he desperately needed a cig, Jeff was threatening to throw up if Regan threw up again, and Dottie was shaking so much that Eddie straight up manhandled her into his lap like a child and covered the ear that wasn’t pressed up against his chest with his own hand. Credits rolled, and Gareth was the only one that moved out of his chair to stretch and turn on the lights, face pallid when he saw the angry faces of his friends.
“Uh…”
“Are you fucking serious, Gareth?” Donny said in disbelief, knees cracking with the sudden movement of standing up after two hours. “That shit was so fucked up!”
“Please don’t fight,” Jeff said tiredly, letting his pillow drop to the floor.
“Oh, I’m fighting,” Donny doubled down. “Look at Dot! You know she hates horror movies and you get this one? Couldn’t you get fucking Gremlins instead?”
“It’s not that scary, it’s so obvious everything’s totally fake! You can see the tube stuck to her head when she throws up!”
“That was so fucking gross,” Jeff added, still looking a little green himself.
“It’s okay-” Dottie began, wiping under her eyes with the sleeve of her red cardigan, but Donny interrupted her again.
“This is what you were giving her shit for in the video store?”
“Okay, shit- I get it. I fucked up,” Gareth lifted his hands. “I honestly didn’t think it was that scary the first time I saw it.”
“Man, you need to see a shrink if that shit didn’t scare you,” Eddie said, no longer all cozied up to Dottie, but still keeping one arm around her for support.
“I’m sorry,” Gareth looked at Dot, who was the most affected out of his friends. “Didn’t mean to make you feel like ass for two hours. I thought we’d have fun with it.”
“You’re mean, and I hate you, but it’s okay,” she said, grumpily pouting but lifting her arms to ask him for a hug which he immediately gave her. “Just don’t do it again. And you have to go with me to the bathroom now because I’m gonna pee myself and I don’t wanna be in there alone.”
“I’ll hold your hand while you pee, you big wuss.”
Gareth and Dottie climbed up the stairs, him cracking the stupidest jokes to get her to relax while Jeff busied himself going to grab the ice cream so everyone could cool down before the second movie. Donny got his pack of cigarettes out of his pocket and nodded at Eddie to follow him outside. They pressed their backs to the cold brick, the lights spilling out from the glass panel on the door illuminating their faces with warm yellow tones. They smoked for a few minutes in silence, looking out onto the fenced-in backyard.
“That shit was wild,” Donny said. "Can't believe they made a twelve-year-old pretend to stab her own pussy with a fucking cross."
"You think that actress was really 12?" Eddie mused.
"Well, she looked like it."
"Yeah, but... maybe she was like 16 and just looks really small? Dunno, but that was crazy. Was she really telling that priest to fuck that other priest?"
"Yeah," Donny chuckled, throwing a bit of ash to the ground. "Saw you, by the way."
"Saw me?"
"You two. Dottie sitting on your lap."
"Oh, fuck off," Eddie scoffed.
"I'm not saying anything weird was happening. Just that I saw you."
"She was terrified, man. Never seen her shake like that, and I've seen her scared before," the eldest said, bitterly.
"Yeah?"
"I'm telling you, I could feel her fucking heartbeat and that shit didn’t feel healthy. She's gonna sleep with her lights on for a week."
"Shit. Didn't realize it was that bad or I would have said something. Honestly thought she was playing it up a little bit, getting cozy with you."
"Nah, she's not like that."
"How do you know?" Eddie shrugged, and Donny narrowed his eyes. "What's been going with you two lately? You're like, attached at the hip."
Eddie took his time to answer, letting the smoke in his lungs leave his body slowly, savoring the peace and quiet of the Friday night. Donny had been his first friend in the group, and if anyone deserved honesty after showing him so much loyalty, it was him. Maybe he'd have valuable insight to share with him in return.
"I'm whipped, Don. That's what's going on," Eddie said.
"Tell me something I don't know, dude."
"Is it that obvious?"
"To me, yes. I don't think the others have noticed yet."
"Yeah, well, it's bad. Like really, really bad. Like I'm one more pout away from dropping on one knee and asking her to be the new Mrs. Munson bad."
"Jesus."
"Yup."
"So it's not just a crush? Are you, like, seriously in love with her?"
"I'm gonna go to prom and wear a tie for her. Take a wild fucking guess."
Donny stared at Eddie for a few seconds before smiling and shaking his head. The long haired boy lifted an eyebrow, questioning.
"Why haven't you asked her out yet?"
"I don't deserve her."
"Ed-"
"I just don't want to drag her down, y'know? She has all these plans, she’s gonna go to college, do cool stuff. I want to ask her when I have something real to offer. After graduation, once I get a job."
"Eddie, has it ever occurred to you that she really fucking likes you right now? You know, without all that extra shit?"
"I know she does."
"You do?" Donny looked at him like he'd grown two heads.
"I'm stupid, not blind. Dunno when she started to like me but yeah, I know she does."
"When did you figure it out?"
"We spent Mother's Day together."
"Oh."
"That's when I realized, damn, she must really like me to spend such a big day like this with me. And then her Dad gave me a manly talk so I just kinda put two and two together."
"Does she know you know?"
"I don't know if she even knows herself. She was telling me the other day that it's stupid boys and girls can't be friends without people reading too much into it. Maybe she’s in denial. I was.
“You were?”
“For like two days, yeah,” Eddie admitted.
"I'll ask Gareth about it. I bet he knows."
"You think?"
"They act like siblings all the time, if someone knows, it's him," Donny assured him, putting his cig out against the brick wall. "Hurry up though, she might get tired of waiting."
"Just a couple more weeks. Until I know if I graduate or not. It's the bare fucking minimum but she deserves it."
"Alright. I'm rooting for you, man. Go make me proud."
"Thanks, dude."
They returned to the basement after their smoke break, Donny giving him an encouraging pat on the shoulder when they saw Dottie and Jeff back on the couch, heads together over a big tub of vanilla ice cream. Gareth was sitting on the floor in front of them scooping chocolate into a bowl that already had strawberry and vanilla in it. She was explaining the basics of the movie they were about to watch, warning them that things weren’t what they seemed and that it was about to get weird. Jeff looked terribly excited about the prospect of some lighthearted fun, and whatever talk Gareth and Dottie had had while they were in the bathroom (he’d apologized again while he stood in a corner, back to her and his eyes closed for good measure while she peed) had left him equally curious. The boy heard the words “boobs” and “murder” and decided he was all in for the experience.
Once everyone was back in their seats and had a cold treat in their hands to enjoy during the movie, lights went off and bright red lips filled the screen. Michael Rennie was ill the day the Earth stood still, but he told us… where we stand, Dottie mouthed following the lyrics, spoon resting on her lower lip. It was a complete 180 from the previous feature, her eyes now glued to the moving images, only rousing from her hypnosis to fill her spoon with more ice cream when Jeff prompted her to do so. She encouraged the boys to participate, instructing them to say “Janet” or “Oh, Brad” in a bored tone along with Riff Raff and Magenta during Dammit Janet or teaching them the steps to The Time Warp. Donny and Jeff, ever the performers, immediately jumped to action when Hot Patootie - Bless My Soul began, and Eddie twirled Dottie around proving himself to be quite the capable dancer when he put effort into it. Even Gareth got into the festivities when the pickaxe came out.
“Okay, that was awesome,” Jeff said while the credits were still rolling. “Didn’t know musicals could be, y’know, not Grease.”
“Take that back, Grease is legit,” Donny threatened him with his spoon.
“Less boobs than I was promised but still pretty good,” laughed Gareth, and Dottie chucked a pillow at his head.
“Looks like movie night is a success all thanks to Dot,” Eddie said, grinning at the girl that couldn’t sing for shit, but still knew all the lyrics to every beat of the musical. “Gareth, you’re banned from picking movies for a month.”
“I’ll take it,” he shrugged.
“Are there more musicals like this?” Jeff asked, and Eddie could see Dottie’s eyes glinting in the darkness.
“Well, there’s one about a demon barber…”
Eddie’s 20th birthday had been nothing like he was used to, but as he sat in Jeff’s brown-looking basement, his crush resting her weight against his shoulder as she animatedly explained to their friends the plot of Sweeney Tood: The Demon Barber of Fleet… Street, his spoon full of strawberry ice cream, and a pre-rolled joint in his backpack they were definitely going to sneakily smoke in the back of his van at some point during the night, he felt truly lucky for the first time in years. Everything was going to change for them in a few weeks, but Eddie really hoped that his 21st birthday would be as happy, if not more, as his 20th had been.
“I specifically said ranch, not mustard, you idiot!”
Sauce packets bounced off your helmet and for the millionth time tonight you wondered why you were subjecting yourself to this.
Oh, that’s right–Christmas presents. Times were tough in this economy and gifts didn’t buy themselves.
“ –um, HELLO, are you even listening to me?” Unfortunately.
Restraining yourself, you fished a copy of the receipt out of your pocket and held it up for her inspection. “I’m sorry ma’am, but the receipt specifically said mustard and–”
“ –well you should have known what I meant!” she sputtered. “Who eats mustard on a pizza anyway? That’s so stupid!”
“Ma’am, I don’t tell anyone how to eat their food, I just deliver what’s in the bag.” You started to back away towards your moped, ready to be done with this conversation. “If there’s a problem with your order, please contact Food2You support and they’ll be able to offer you assistance.” With that, you got on your moped, strapped on your helmet, and backed out of the driveway, as the customer continued to scream about “lazy, good-for-nothings, don’t think you’re getting a tip”.
And true to her word, you did not get a tip. She’d gone into the app and removed it. Sigh.
Thankfully, the rest of your deliveries went without a hitch. You’d even scored an extra large tip from a heavy order of sushi platters to a penthouse suite downtown. With enough cash to add to your Christmas Fund, you figured you deserved a little treat of your own for what you’d had to deal with tonight.
The craft beer passport burning your roommate had gotten you for your birthday was just burning a hole in the button of your purse, so you figured you might as well use it. Flipping through the pages, you noticed one included location was not far from here: The Black Sheep Bar & Bistro. It advertised itself as having local, custom brews paired with bites to complement the individual notes of each beer. Right up your alley.
As busy as it was downtown, you were lucky to find a parking spot not too far from the bar. From the outside, the bar looked welcoming with festive Christmas lights Upon entering, you were greeted by a friendly host, a tall dark-haired man who told you his name was Chanyeol. The dining room was dimly lit with pale yellow twinkle lights on the ceiling and a variety of booths and small tables that gave it a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Situated on the other end of the room, was a shiny, mahogany bar. The low hum of conversation was quiet, surprising, since it seemed like all the tables were filled.
“It looks like we’re fully booked tonight, so unfortunately I don’t have a table for you.”
You were about to say “no problem”, when Chanyeol’s gaze shifted over your head. He paused for a second, then smiled.
“ –unless you wouldn’t mind sitting at the bar? Looks like a spot just opened up.”
It must have been your lucky night, as you soon found yourself promptly seated at the shiny, wooden bar, perusing the many drink and food options. Beer flights, specialty cocktails, and appetizer pairings with an array of global dishes that changed monthly, according to the menu.
“So, what can I get started for you?”
You looked up to see a handsome man, probably in his mid-twenties to early thirties. Blonde hair, dark eyes. Cute. Not that you were looking. He’s here to ask you for your order, not for you to ogle like a piece of meat.
You cleared your throat. “Ummm…it’s my first time here and there’s so many good choices…do you have a recommendation?”
He took the menu and flipped through to the entree page. “We do small plates here, but some are more generous than others. If you’re hungry, the beep tenderloin with garlic potato puree is very popular. More adventurous, I’d recommend the bison barbeque sliders. And finally, my personal favorite, the loaded mini hotdog bites. They’re stuffed with cheese and caramelized onions.”
You scratched your chin in thought. “Hmm, I think I’ll take the hotdog bites, you made that sound really interesting.”
“And to drink?”
“Whatever you have on tap that would go well with the buns.”
He finished scribbling on his little pad of paper. “Sounds good, I’ll go put this order right in. I’m Yixing, by the way, in case you need anything else”. He winked then walked away.
You watched him as he went. Yixing. You knew his name!
After hanging your ticket at the kitchen window, he went about his business, taking orders, making drinks, chatting with guests who were clearly regulars. It was calming to watch him move about the bar; it was rhythmic and he flowed as though a dancer might.
Finally, he came to you again, holding a pint of pale liquid and a plate of little bites made of what looked to be puff pastry. He presented them to you with a flourish. “Our brewmaster recommends a nice, amber ale to cut through the richness of the meat and complement the cheese and caramelized onions. Both the chef and the brewmaster are very open to feedback, so please let me know if it isn’t to your liking.”
You dutifully followed his instructions, and mindful of his watchful gaze, attempted to take a some-what elegant bite out of the steaming mini hotdog bites. Not expecting to heat, you reached for your beer and chugged a third of the glass. Smooth.
“Sorry, sorry! I should have warned you. People usually wait for them to cool off a bit.” Yixing said, pressing his hands together in repentance.
You swallowed. “That’s okay, it’s my fault. They just looked so good that I couldn’t wait.”
“I’m the same way,” he said, grinning. “I’d rather look like a fire-breathing dragon, than wait a whole five minutes.”
You smiled, staring at his face and wishing you were better at small talk. Come on, think of something. You did improv in high school and this is what you have to show for it?
“...well, enjoy your first couple bites and let me know if you need anything else, okay?”
You tried to say something to get him to stay, you really did, but all you could manage was a small smile and a thumbs up. Oh my god, really, that’s all the game I have?
He raised an eyebrow, returning your thumbs up with one of his own. You could swear you heard him chuckling as he walked away.
You tried to eat your food slowly, taking small bites and even smaller sips of your drink to make your time here last longer. After an hour, you’d finally finished your food, taking your time to people-watch, well person-watch, without making it too obvious.  The bar had pretty much cleared out and only a few diners lingered in the restaurant.
“Kitchen’s closing in five minutes, so last call for orders. Do you want anything else?” Yixing asked. He stepped towards you from the other end of the counter where he’d been drying glasses. Which you had not been watching him do.
You were, in fact, very full. And honestly, at this time of day, you’d typically smash a bag of salty kettle chips and call it a night.
“I think I’m good, I usually finish out my night with junk food, so I’m not used to eating rich food so late. I’ll take another order of the hotdog bites to go though, my roommate would kill me if I didn’t bring anything home for her.”
Yixing nodded and headed over to put in the order, but instead of stopping at the window, he went through the doors and all the way into the kitchen. Moments later, he was back and walking towards you. He stopped and thought for a second before bending down behind the counter. You heard rustling, as though he was looking for something. Finally, he popped back up with a look of conspiracy on his face. His eyes darted around, as though making sure the coast was clear, before shoving a small box across the bar to you.
Peering in the box, you saw a variety of packaged snacks: Lay’s chips, rice crackers, Pocky, Kit-Kats, cream wafers, pretzels, and many more snacks you’d never seen before. You furrowed your eyebrows, unsure of what was happening.
Having seen your confusion, Yixing leaned forward, to whisper. “I love junk food, but the brewmaster, Xiumin, is my gym partner and he’s very strict about food. I hide these here so I can eat them when he isn’t watching. You want one?”
Mesmerized at his closeness, you reached into the box and grabbed a snack, not caring which one you actually ended up with. You smiled, fingering the waxy material. “Well, then I appreciate you sharing your secret stash with me.”
“And you can’t tell Xiumin, okay?”
“Of course. I will guard your secret with my life.” You made a serious expression, thumping your hand over your chest in promise. It didn’t even matter that you had no idea who Xiumin was. You just liked the moment you were sharing.
The sound of a throat clearing made you jump and you looked up to see a short dark-haired man with glasses wearing a chef’s uniform. He held a white, to-go box, no doubt your hot dog bites. His gaze shifted between you and Yixing, almost like he knew something was up. “You better put that away before Xiumin comes in here and sees that.” He jerked his chin towards the box of contraband.
Yixing nodded, the box disappearing as though it had never been.
The chef placed your food on the counter and slid it towards you. “Here you are ma’am, have a wonderful night and thank you for stopping at The Black Sheep Bar and Bistro.”
Taking that as your cue to leave, you slipped on your coat and grabbed the box. Looking up, you locked eyes with Yixing. “Thanks, uh, for the recommendation,” you held up the box and your bag of snack, “ –and um, thank you for the chat.”
Yixing smiled warmly. “You’re welcome. Feel free to come back anytime. I’m always here.”
You nodded, feeling almost light-headed, before awkwardly stumbling out the door. Chanyeol bid you farewell, smiling slyly as you left, like he hadn’t just watched you stare at his bartender all night.
Outside, you leaned against the wall, fighting off an existential crisis. He wanted you to come back. To see you again. Had he been flirting? Or was he just being nice, the same as he was to all customers? Did he give special secret snacks to all the girls at the bar? You hoped he didn’t. You texted your roommate that you needed some “girl talk”, hoping she’d catch on that there was an emergency here.
Trudging up the stairs to your apartment, you let yourself in. And as expected, Jessica was waiting up with ice cream and an expectant expression. Handing off the takeout, you went to change your clothes, happy to get into some comfortable sweats.
“Hey, did you meet a guy or something?” Jessica shouted from the kitchen.
“Yeah, why?” you shouted back.
“Come take a look.”
You padded out to the kitchen, where Jessica was waiting with a gleeful expression.
Look!” she exclaimed, turning the open takeout container, so you could see the open lid. The open lid with numbers written on it. Numbers that looked suspiciously like a phone number.
“Are you seeing what I’m seeing?” you asked.
“Yes!” Jessica squealed. “OMG spill, what happened? Because last time I heard from you you had mustard packets thrown in your face. This is SO much better than that!”
Jessica wouldn’t let you out of the room before you spilled all the dirty details. Not that there were any.
“This is JUST like what happened in the drama I’ve been watching!” Jessica said, stamping her feet in excitement. “You HAVE to text him.”
“And say what? ‘Hi, I’m the girl that you gave prohibited junk food to at the place of your employment that was staring at you all night because I think you’re hot?’ Besides, how do we know he even meant it for me?”
Jessica sighed. “Maybe because he wrote it on the back of your takeout container? Who else would it be for?”
“Okay, but what do I say?”
Jessica cracked her knuckles and patted you on the shoulder. “Thankfully, Big Sister Jessica is here, I don’t watch rom-coms for nothing.” She grabbed your phone and proceeded to type.
You peered at the screen over her shoulder. “ ‘Hi, it’s Chips Girl.’  That’s what you came up with? No, ‘Hi, it’s Chips Girl, thanks for tonight, what are you up to? Want to get married?’.”
“Nope, we’re giving an air of mystery, darling. He has to make the next move.”
Your phone buzzed in Jessica’s hand. Jessica squealed while you tried to remember to breathe. She handed you the phone, staring pointedly, as you read what was on the screen.
“Hi Chips Girl ;). I was hoping you’d get my message. I was wondering…if you wanted more chips…maybe tomorrow at 6:00 at the movie theater next to the bar?”
“He asked you on a date, OMG!” Jessica screeched, running into your room. “Come on, let’s go,” she called, “outfits don’t plan themselves.”
You sent off a quick “Yes, that sounds nice!” text, holding the phone to your chest.
Smiling to yourself, you thought perhaps this day hadn’t been bad at all. “Merry Christmas to me,” you whispered. A perfect present for a perfect Christmas.
almost-birthday thoughts
i'll turn 40 in a few days, on thursday. i've always loved presents and reasons to celebrate, round numbers, enthusiasm...reasons to be excited, i guess. but this birthday matters way more to me than the others; it feels deeper. i don't look to 50 or 60 (if i'm lucky enough to get there) and feel any particular way, but i felt this one coming. i needed this one to matter.
my mom was 32 when she had me, and her 40th birthday is the first birthday i remember witnessing of hers. the family teasing her, the 'lordy lordy looks who's forty' rhymes. her hair was already gray, and welfare hadn't forced her back into the workforce yet. she was happier than i would ever see her be, again.
and i honestly don't remember much else about her birthday party, or that year specifically. big, terrible things happened a year later, but when i was only 8? she was just 40, we all celebrated like we celebrated every birthday of everybody--and the number didn't mean anything to me.
now, i'm about to be 40, and the last time i saw my mom, i was 21. she turned 72 this year, which is the age my grandmother was when she died. i reached out, because of that. i get my spine from my grandmother and my stubbornness from my mother, but i yielded, just enough. i know i won't see her again while she's alive. i'm at peace with that, as much as i can be.
but it still makes 40 feel more important, somehow. like i've hit the inbetween. i've survived the rock and the hard place and somehow i'm still alive and i'm going to be 40 years old, older than my mother was when i entered the world, while she's older than her mother was when she left it.
i've never cared much about age in the way some people do: i don't worry about how wrinkles make me look, or how quickly silver began streaking through my brown hair. i'm not lamenting (or celebrating) what i've accomplished as i approach a real mile marker. until i started writing this, it didn't even occur to me that depending on how long i live, i may actually be entering middle age now.
that can't be true, right? whatever middle-aged is, it doesn't feel like me reblogging tumblr gifs and rambling about the movies i've watched or sharing my cat stories. my health issues have existed for so long they seem entirely divorced from the passage of time, so i can't even say i feel like i'm getting old because i have pain, or sleep trouble--whatever the cliches are.
anyway, being the many things that i am (autistic, bipolar, anxious, vibrating at a high ADHD frequency even while medicated), i'm probably always going to be one of those 'i don't feel my age' people. so that doesn't surprise me. it's more the principle of this year, that matters to me. it has mattered all year as i felt my birthday approaching.
so both intentionally and coincidentally, i made this one of my biggest birthdays ever. because of the timing of thanksgiving and school holidays and other stuff outside my control, my family celebrating started early. last week alone was intense, in the best way.
i found out earlier this year, with much surprise and delight, that hadestown was not only touring, but coming literally to our downtown theater. a ticket to that was my gift to myself. i'd never seen any musical i love onstage--and definitely not a broadway one, touring or otherwise. and i didn't think about, when i purchased the ticket, how the show would be happening only a week after the election. but it was perfect, even more so because of that. i needed it.
and then, @actuallylukedanes made it possible for me to see suzy eddie izzard, performing live. they're the one who first introduced me to her comedy, literally decades ago now, and her bits are embedded in the fabric of our family (who all went together). getting to actually be in her presence wasn't on my bucket list, much like i didn't actually expect to see a musical i loved until i did--i'm still a little in shock that we were really there. it really happened. and in addition to being funny, she was very sincerely trying to give us all hope. it made me cry.
before the show, we got something to eat nearby, and it's been years since i had such a good milkshake. i want to go back there and try their sandwiches (i enjoyed the fries and their natural orange soda). the theater smelled like history, and i love all the memories i made with my family just on that one day, including the hour i spent reading in the car before i ran out of sunlight while music blasted all around us. and the singalong on the ride home. i think it was nearly 4 hours of driving, to get there and back that day, but for me at least, it was worth it.
i've already gotten one of my birthday presents (besides the suzy eddie izzard show of course), because @actuallyrorygilmore had to visit early and leave yesterday, thanks to the schedules etc i mentioned above. she got me a book i really wanted, and can't wait to read, once i've made a dent in my giant partially-read pile of paperbacks and hardcovers from my distracted era. (i'm nearly done with two! i'm making actual progress!)
i also got a cupcake and a box of caramels i love...and all of that was before my birthday has even happened!
i've still got some kind of unwrappable gift coming to mark the day, and the wicked movie coming out, 20 years after i was first belting along to the soundtrack in my college dorm room, alone over thanksgiving break. (i won't be seeing wicked on my birthday, but because regal sometimes opens movies here a day early on thursdays, it will premiere on my birthday. i love that.)
a lot about this year, heading into turning 40, has been really hard. i lost my little ghost cat, bailey, in january--and mellie's son sebastian, who brought bailey to us in the first place...we lost him right before halloween. pretty horrible bookends to 2024. and now, bonus fascism! that's just hovering, a january storm cloud i'm ignoring until it's here.
so, i can't say 40 is gonna be fantastic. or, 2025 will be my best year yet! or anything else silly, like the hopeful things i remember proclaiming as we were heading into 2020. i'm sure i believed them at the time, very sincerely--but the universe gave us a pandemic instead, among so much else. that was not a year of joy.
what i can say, and be grateful for, is that i'm about to be 40 years old. and when i was a child, and i tried to imagine my life someday, it was a big expanse of nothingness. it wasn't that i was pessimistic about my future, or even that i didn't know what i wanted. i literally couldn't imagine myself as an adult, living in the world, having any life different from the way things had always been for me, growing up. i couldn't see it.
so i genuinely, fiercely, painfully believed that meant that i must not be fated to live to see adulthood. to have any kind of future. i was very much an anne shirley kind of child, and i blame my fanciful imagination for that sense of certain doom, but i did believe it. i never expected to make it this far.
despite that, despite everything, here i am. raising kittens and seeing musicals and being celebrated by a chosen family who both love and like me, for who i actually am. i have a room of my own and the choice of how i spend my time, and i'm needed in the world. i'll never run out of things to learn, and make, and new friends to meet. no matter what's coming, i still do love my small, valuable life.
a lot can happen in 40 years, i now know from experience. i'm going to try and keep making mine better.
