Hello! I have a question in regards to a roadkill fox I found. I skinned the fox and since I had no idea what to do with it, I stuck the pelt into a bag and stuck it in my deep freezer for later.

My question is, what can I do with the pelt? I have no idea if freezing it was a bad move or not. I'd like to taxidermy it but I'm unsure how to go about cleaning the pelt. The fox was pretty dehydrated when I found it so the pelt had a lot of fat still stuck to it before I froze it.

I'm familiar with cleaning and working with bones, and not much else. I'd really appreciate any advice or ideas you might have! Thank you!

Freezing it was the RIGHT move!!

When in doubt, freeze.

Now that it’s frozen, you kinda have a lot of options. You can mount it or turn the pelt into some sort of fabric or crafts project, whatever you’d like.

However, you need to tan it if you’re going to do anything.

Tbh, what I’d do before even buying any tanning supplies is I’d thaw out my fox and lightly tug on the fur. If it comes out easily in large chunks, it’s developed “slip.” This is due to decay. You can still try to tan it, but it may not be worth it depending on where the slip is.

If everything’s ok, you can either 1) throw him back in the freezer and wait for your supplies to come in or 2) remove large pieces of fat and meat with a scalpel/knife and salt the hide thoroughly. This is explained further in the tutorial ^

You want fine-grain plain salt.

As for when you actually need to flesh it post-pickle, I recommend getting a hide scraper from McKenzie’s. (Assuming you’re an American, oops.) Makes it fall off easy. You can also get your mounting supplies there! Though, you won’t need to worry about that until the hide is tanned.

You will need to prep the face if your goal is to mount it later. You can either do this after you thaw it or after the pickle.

I always thought is very tricky to draw that wrinkle that goes from the nose and around the mouth and still male it look good, but gosh you nail it in every art, super expressive and pretty. Looking at all your drawings 🔍🕵‍♀️ to properly appreciate and study it. But wow really in love with your art style is so expressive and pleasing to look at, and the colors are so pretty 👌👌👌👌

i LOVEEE drawing wrinkles!!! it makes faces soso so expressive and i try to add wrinkles to every character i draw whenever i can. and the fact i also love drawing characters smiling (they make me happy, so i want to be able to share my joy to other people by drawing them smiling too!) which of course makes that wrinkle around the nose and mouth more prominent :-)

im not a person that can draw well from memory, i use references excessively even if it doesnt turn out the same way from the reference im copying from in the end 😊

i drew these out real quick but i have no clue how to explain any of these so i just thought about sharing it with you anyways!

call it "cheating" or whatever, but most of the time i even trace over the reference just to have a base i can copy the expression im trying to draw from. i do art for fun and if it makes my process that much easier then. well!

I think the absolutely most baffling thing to me that I've noticed in the AI generated image discourse is that people seem to think that artists don't make any compromises or sacrifices ever and live perfect, comfortable lives where things just happen to align perfectly for them to have the time to create art that perfectly aligns with their vision

"I don't have the time to draw" do you really know if artists simply have the time to draw or on the contrary, have to sacrifice something to gain that time to draw? can you be so sure that they don't have to deal with hardships to gain the time to draw? or, they have the time to draw because they can't do something else in their lives due to their circumstances, and drawing is the only thing that will fill this time?

"I can't create stuff that meets my vision" how can you be so sure that the stuff artists create meets their vision? do you really think this art was their vision from the absolute beginning? or did they actually have to make compromises to reach this specific look, which maybe wasn't what they aimed for to begin with? can you even be sure if the medium they spend the most time on is the medium they intended to pick up from the beginning, or is it a medium they've had to pick up to compromise for not picking up another art form they wanted to stick to in the first place due to myriads of reasons?
