#it needed a single vision

I kept a lot of high spirits even through Rise of the Skywalker. It was bad, but I just rode with it, even with the people around me obviously annoyed. I’ve been through worse Star Wars stories. Bad writing decisions in the prequels, in the games, in the books...

I heard the spoilers and had already braced for the kiss. The moments of repeating the same fakeout of “oh no, character you care about died! ...Not!” three times weren’t known to me, but they had already told me they were checked out with this one and I found my own fun.

You wanna know the single moment where I knew they wasted the potential of the series?

This moment. This was the same moment I had as when I saw Tron: Legacy in theaters and (spoiler alert!!1) Tron turns back to his old self and turns on Clu, saying “I fight for the users!” and I was hype despite seemingly no one else in the theater getting it. I was the only person in my group of like six people who saw the original Tron. That line was for, basically, me.

This moment in RotS was for me as well. I read the Rogue Squadron novels as a kid and played the Rogue Squadron games. I put both my hands up in the theater the exact same way I did watching Tron: Legacy.

And I just wish it meant more.

He was a cameo that basically didn’t do anything, part of a massive “all the cavalry has shown up” battle against a bullshit ass-pull enemy fleet, after a cavalcade of bad writing decisions had taken the wind out of everyone else.

This was like... the only thing that I wanted that I ended up getting from RotS.

And that’s utterly damning.

Which drives me nuts because it was all so simple. I know some of the plot twists in TLJ were controversial (and I don’t mean by the anti-SJW crowd; Phasma was done dirty) but at least you could see what the idea was. RotS felt like it gave up. It over-corrected, ignored, and just wanted everything done in ways that especially frustrate someone like me who sees things in terms of how they could be fixed, how even a bad decision could still be done better.

I knew all in the post above wasn’t going to happen. Even still, I thought they would nail ONE of them. But, at the end of it all, I literally only got one thing.

I got Wedge. For half a minute.

(And Rey with a yellow lightsaber because that was what I always used in games and even that was a fucking MESS of a moment.)

Me leaving the theatre December 17 2015: Wow! I can’t wait for Finn to become a Jedi and lead a storm trooper revolution, and Rey to be a skywalker/Kenobi, and Poe to be a main character with development and lead with Leia, and Luke helping his sister lead the new rebellion and train Finn and Rey. And Hux and Kylo and Phasma are gonna be an evil trio! So much cool stuff is gonna happen!

It's so late– too late to be fully coherent on this– but before i sleep i just need to say it's fundamentlaly fruitless to try and make a "progressive masculinity" to deradizalize young boys from the MRA pipeline. If what you want is for them to unlearn misogyny, the framework of "There are certain values and virtues that belong specifically and exclusively to men, and others that belong to women" isn't just useless but actively harmful no matter how nice the virtues you pick out are. A young boy unlearning misogyny doesn't need to be learn how to "be a masculine man" but in a progressive coating. He needs to be taught he doesn't need to be a masculine man at all, he just needs to learn how to be a person.

it's a chicken-or-egg kind of conflict, built on unreasonable expectations and toxic desire.

sam and dean choose to be codependent in 1.22 devil's trap: they both make grandiose statements that communicate their devotion to each other. but then, between 2.02 everybody loves a clown and around 2.04 children shouldn't play with dead things, sam starts talking about honoring their dad and trying to do right by him. he's guilty that john died before they could actually have a good relationship; he's just started to forgive him for their upbringing, and now he's gone and the way he copes with that is by trying to follow in john's footsteps, as if to prove that he's fine now with the life he's given them.

but john just sold his soul for dean and told dean that he might have to kill his brother—dean has come to perceive john as an enemy. john is asking dean to do the impossible, and on top of that he's left dean without anyone to guide him and tell him how to act. and so dean has cast john out in favor of entering a codependent unit with sam. sam is now all dean has left, physically and emotionally, and sam just declared his devotion to dean in no uncertain terms, chose him definitively, and so sam is therefore agreeing to fill in all of the holes john left behind so that dean can feel whole again.

but here sam is "allying" himself with john.

and sam obviously isn't intentionally trying to hurt dean; he's having a normal response to death. but sam's loyalty to dean and john can't coexist in dean's eyes, and that means sam is reneging on his commitment to dean, even though sam absolutely did not do that. and so dean he keeps to himself and refuses to open up about the truth because he can't trust sam to side with him, afraid of rejection or admonishment (which he receives anyway across the beginning of season 2, reinforcing those fears). he's angry and he feels alone because sam "chose" john when dean needed him most.

and as a result, because sam is of course still trying to be codependent with dean, dean's refusal to open up and be honest with him is equally seen as a betrayal of their commitment. to sam, honoring john is not in conflict with being codependent with dean. yet for some reason, dean won't even talk to him. he expects complete and open honesty from dean with their new dynamic—secrets are no longer acceptable because they're supposed to be on the same page, always—and he's not getting it, and it hurts. all he can see is betrayal.

of course sam is going to mourn his father after he's worked so hard to forgive him. of course dean is going to get frustrated at having no one to share his grief and anger with. of course sam is going to be hurt by dean's rejection. of course they're going to be upset at each other's betrayal of a profound commitment. it's a lot of reasonable reactions to unreasonable expectations, irrational perceptions, and half-truths that distort and warp their realities into something toxic and unmanageable. it's all about those subtle moments which unknowingly communicate betrayal of an undernegotiated relationship, all amplified by the heightened tension of grief and loss.

and around and around it goes.
