Tails on werewolves in folklore were a sign of their inhumanity: a man becoming a beast. Today, many on the internet today unfortunately find tails cute, so I understand a horror werewolf missing a tail. But behold the back end of this The Howling werewolf statue. Kinda hilarious
Sidebar, btw, in folklore, werewolves did have tails and witches didn't. It was an important distinction by the late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period.
