Here’s another commissioned Snarry piece I’ve been working on!

It portrays another Pro-war Snarry narrative, this time from the vantage point of their ward, Alice, an orphan hailing from a Death Eater family. My client painted a rich tapestry of a pro-war wizarding world rife with controversial grey areas in her story – a delight to read and illustrate.

In this tableau, Alice is elated to see her guardians unite as a couple, with Harry finally popping the question to Snape after years of being together. (Okay, she didn’t exactly see it unfold; she sneakily peeked at the entire scene XD).

I thoroughly enjoyed crafting my 2nd Snarry artwork. I’m particularly fond of its composition and the unique peeping perspective.

Just a quick note, Anon. If you have an Ask that might have been sitting there for a while now in my inbox, I haven't forgotten it! A month ago or so, I started getting these messages in my ASKs, from a very frustrated person who is apparently in the Caryl server I am in, and it's sort of made me wary? I sort of think they are venting. Their frustration isn't aimed at me but people I am friends with so it's kinda gotten me suspicious. There's regular Asks mixed in with them and this Ask kinda kicked my butt into gear lol I am gonna get to these other Asks so sit tight if you have one in there! I apologize, I really do love getting them and have so much fun answering!

Merle!!! Okay, I love Merle! When Merle was introduced in GUTS I really did not care for him at all. I applauded Officer Friendly for putting him on his ass and cuffing him up. He reminded me of my sisters dumbass racist asshole boyfriends from way back when, so, at first, I didn't like him from that initial episode.

Enter Daryl in Tell it to the Frogs! They were talking about Daryl in the cube van back to the quarry so I was definitely interested to see how what the brother of this Merle guy was like xD

Of course Daryl was upset his brother was cuffed to a rooftop pipe, threat of the living dead and all, so his reaction to me was really sad and heartbreaking to see, especially when they got there and found Merle's hand! Dx

When they didn't find him I forgot about Merle until that season two hallucination.

Then season 3, Merle is with this Governor dickcheese, so I totally knew some kind of arc was gonna play out and I was not disappointed! it was harrowing to say the least, I was so happy when Merle followed Daryl to the prison. I wanted to see Glenn, Merle and Maggie work through what happened, for Merle to come to a truce with everyone, and see him become a full fledged part of TF.

Bawled. I bawled like a crazy person when Merle was killed. I had totally embraced him, wanted him and Daryl to work out their relationship, and for some kick ass moments between Merle and Carol lol. That banter they had was epic. Wish that deleted scene of Carol and he had stayed in the show.

I'd have loved to see Merle in the Gov's war, Merle on he road, Merle in Alexandria. Missed the mark on that one, TPTB.

So I was part of this RP community on Mocospace (people still RP there but all the OG's have moved to Discord, after having first migrated to KIK) and I was on there, on a real life profile in like. . . 2008. I made a Severus Snape profile just for fun, the reasons why aren't important! xD If anyone is still reading this far and wants to know, send an Ask. But one night there was no one the in NEAR ME room so I explored the chat rooms, found the state rooms and I noticed North Carolina was really full of people! I went in there on my Snape profile, and I stumbled into a room full of Twilight Characters! And Pro Wrestling Characters! I was like O......O OMG! My peeps! Now, I had never read/watched any of the Twilight stuff at this point but they just swooped in and accepted me, it was wonderful! They introduced me to this wonderful world of Role Play! I was very novice to being online lol. Snape's bestie was Bella from Twilight and Nicki Bella, from Wresting. She played both of them on one profile lol it was amazing.

There was this whole Harry Potter Rp community that just so happened, did not have a Snape! So I learned the ropes, the rules, and it started my whole path and journey to where I ended up RPing Daryl, and writing fanfiction for Caryl.

I won't bore with the details on how I moved on from the Snape profile, it was so much drama, people became offended when my gender was revealed. I just assumed people knew I was a woman??

Anyway - I became obsessed with TWD, Daryl, Carol, Caryl, so I made a RP group, and we had almost the whole roster of characters! I ran the group, as was looking for a Merle, looking for a Rick, looking for a Michonne. I couldn't find anyone who wrote Merle good enough so I made him myself lol A werewolf RPer found me role playing by myself one day in North Carolina, he auditioned for Rick and he ended up being a pretty good writer, so I let him make a Governor too.

But omg I had SO MUCH FUN role playing Daryl and Merle, by myself to myself xD

I must say, my group lasted until around season 6 of TWD. It was a blast. I miss having a RP group of friends just writing out fun little plays. I have so many stories about it xD And thirsty people for my Daryl's . . . crossbow! Dx xD

Auror’s Helper

“Attention!” Dumbledore stood up from the breakfast table and walked to the front to make his speech. “This reminder is for 7th years, rest of the students may continue to enjoy their breakfast.”

Sighs escaped from 7th years when they looked at Dumbledore with their unpressed expressions, his speeches were always boring and in the early morning they would be even more unbearable.

“You have been told that there will be introduction days about different jobs of wizarding world. And today is the beginning of these days! Our first guest will be an auror, I assume most of you will be very interested in that guest since auror is one the most popular jobs. You will meet with her on your 3rd period in the gardens, your professors will be escorting you.” Dumbledore eyed the students for a second before continuing with his speech. Their grumpy expression has left its place to an excited one right now. “That’s all for now, please enjoy your breakfast.”

The time passed so slowly for the students during their first 2 classes, they couldn’t pay attention to their classes at all because they were way too excited to meet the auror who Dumbledore mentioned. Especially Gryffindors were extra happy since their third period was potions with Professor Snape, they couldn’t wish for a better timing for that job introduction. Finally the time has come and all four houses went to the gardens with the professors. Soon after they all heard a swoosh above their heads and someone landed in front of them with her broom. You took your goggles and hair tie off, flipped your hair to free them, then smiled cheekily at the students. Some boys were watching you with their jaw dropped open, nobody was expecting the auror to look like a model but there you were with your perfect hair and in cool leather clothes.

“Hello fellows!” you cheered happily and waved at them, you were radiating such a positive energy and it brought smiles to the students’ faces.

“Let’s meet! I am Y/N Y/L/N.” You peeped at your husband Severus’s way with a smirk, he just rolled his eyes at you. You were keeping your marriage in secret to avoid any dangers towards any of you two also to avoid any gossips. But you knew very well Severus hated the fact that you had to use your maiden name, many men were trying to flirt with you thinking you are single and Severus wanted to curse each and every one of them. “I am an auror for 15 years and I spent 5 years of it in America. I can say I faced many different dangers during these years, we will talk about pros and cons of the job then I will show you some defensive spells. Deal?”

The students nodded excitedly while positioning in a half circle shape around you to have a better view. Two Gryffindor boys were making their ways to the front while talking, they weren’t aware that someone was listening them.

“I don’t know how old she is but damn look at her arse!” Blond haired boy said to his friend but before his friend could reply, the boy received a slap on his head by the potions master.

“Severus! Don’t hit the kids!” Minerva McGonagall snapped at him frowning.

“They were being disrespectful... towards the auror.” Severus grunted.

“I wasn’t, really!” the boy looked at you, when he made sure your attention was on him then he continued. “I was just saying how beautiful you are, Miss Y/L/N.” He grinned when you made your way to him.

“Oh dear boy, I would thank you if I haven’t heard what you actually said.” You raised an eyebrow at him smirking evilly while his face turned into a deep red, he tried to apologize but his tongue wasn’t cooperating with him at all. “Next time be more careful around an experienced auror. We can hear the things that you think they are secrets and we can see the things that supposed to be hidden from us. You would be thinking that you fooled us but you would be the one who is fooled in reality.” You walked back to the centre with confidence. Severus was amazed how you tore this kid apart just with your words and he felt like he fell in love with you all over again. After that little interruption, you started to talk about being an auror. You started with the basics then followed with some funny memories to cheer the students and keep their attention on you. You received some questions from curious students and you answered each question carefully.

“Anymore questions?” you took a look at each student. “No? okay. Then let the fun begins! I will show how you can defence yourself in dangerous situations. I am sure you learnt about them in your DADA classes in theory but seeing them in reality will make a difference and you will understand them better in my opinion.” You could see the excitement in the students’ faces and you knew they will be even more excited after your next words. “I need a partner to help me with that lesson. Professor, would you like to be my little helper?” You looked directly at your husband with a kind smile but your eyes were shining with mischief. Severus raised his eyebrow at your “little helper” phrase, he noted to have a revenge when you two were alone. But still he walked to the middle and stood in front of you.

“How can I address you Professor?” You were hardly holding back a laugh when you tried to act like you have never seen him before.

“Professor Snape.” He simply said with his thick voice, he was glad that you didn’t continue to call him your little helper.

“Pleasure to meet you, Professor Snape.” You held your hand out smiling cheekily, he shook it kindly while trying not to roll his eyes at you.

“I know we just met but I want to take this relationship into the next level, Professor Snape. Could you please attack me?” You batted your eyelashes at him in a theatrical way while the students and the other professors burst into laughter. You were sure Severus would have his way with you after the things you have done and that sent shivers down your spine. You and Severus pulled out your wands and took your places, in seconds you two started to duel, at the same time you were giving information to the students about the spells you are using. It has been almost 10 minutes that you were duelling and you wanted to end it graciously, well at least it would be gracious for you. You took the rope which was hanging by your belt, you threw it to air before anyone could understand what’s going on you put a spell on it which made it to wrap around Severus Snape. He let out an annoyed growl while trying to balance himself, falling down in front of the students would be the last thing he wanted. The students were cheering like crazy, they were having the time of their lives by seeing their most scariest professor tied up with the rope. Severus was cursing them with his black eyes, he would make them pay for this for sure. You grinned and saluted the students then made your way towards Severus, he has managed to stand still but his wand was on the ground. You took it gently then with a flick of your wand you let the angry professor free and handed his wand back to him.

“Please applause Professor Snape, he was great but…” You looked at him with a grin. “I was greater.”

Once again everyone burst into laughter while applauding you both but Severus wasn’t having any of it. You adored how grumpy he could get and you just wanted to kiss him right here and there.

After your short class, Dumbledore invited you to have a tea with him which you gladly accepted. You told him about the class and your duel which he enjoyed way too much and he regretted missing to see Severus’s face after his defeat. You left his room after a while and you were heading back to gardens to fly to the ministry but instead you made your way to the dungeons. When you arrived the potions class, you carefully listened the door but you couldn’t hear anything which gave you the confidence to knock on the door. Couple of seconds later you heard the baritone voice, you walked in immediately but he didn’t raise his head from the papers in front of him. You closed the door behind you and walked towards his desk.

“Hello my little helper.” You rested your hands on his table and leaned to his face. His eyes met with yours after he heard your cheerful voice. He put his quill down.

“If you call me this one more time Y/N…”

“What will you do Severus?” You moved around and sat in front of him on his desk. His eyes lingered on your body for a while then he slowly stood up from his chair just to stood between your legs.

“You will be tied up to our bed with this rope of yours and I won’t be very gentle.” He whispered to your ear and he gave a squeeze to your thighs.

“Booked then, my.little.helper.”

After the war, therapy becomes a thing, thanks to muggle raised.

Now, everyone is in therapy, including Severus.

He wasn't going to go, but Minerva convinced him, with a few harsh words.

Now, time goes on, and Severus gets better. His depression never leaves, nor any of the other disorders he's been diagnosed with, but it gets better, and that's really all he can ask for.

There's lots of apologies, aimed at him. Lots of hate, too, but he couldn't really care.

Now, it's been three years since the war.

He was sitting in his kitchen, measuring out twelve grams of sugar for his tea, when there is a sharp rapping is at his door.

Usually, it's hate. It had grown quieter as of late, but still happened.

He peeped through his blinds, to see Potter, who then caught his eye and grinned.

Severus huffed and opened the door, inviting the man in. He really hated standing with the door open.

He went back to measuring his sugar as Harry awkwardly stood in the hall, and turned his head sharp.

"What do you need, Potter? I'm busy."

"What, weighing out your sugar?" He grinned, and Severus huffed.

"Actually I came to invite you to our Christmas party."

Then Severus froze

"Potter why on earth would you do that?"

Harry shrugged, and placed an invite on the table.

"Floo me if you can come, if not, I'll come see you another time. Have a good evening, Sir."

And with that Harry let himself out.

Severus sat with his perfectly made tea, sipping slowly.

It was a simple card, festive. Had the address and time, and also mentioned that fancy dress was optional.

Severus did end up going, but had to leave early - it was all too familiar, and he wasn't ready for that yet.

Ginny was pregnant, which made it worse.

Last time he was invited to a Christmas party was in '79, Lily had invited him.

She was pregnant then, also.

He had left early then, too, but only because Black was glaring at him from across the way.

Back to the present, he sat at home, in his rocking chair.

Potter came over the next day, to check up on him.

"Potter, you're treating me like a senior. I'm fine, go home."

"I mean, to be fair," He was grinning again, a stupid glint in his eye.

"Don't you even think about it."

The younger man scampered off, a grin on his face, yelling that he'll visit again soon.

Severus mumbled that he didn't need to bother.

Over the years, Harry paid annual visits. They eventually got onto first name terms.

Little James seemed enthralled with Severus.

Severus wasn't too fond of little James, though.

They brought him to see Severus often, and soon Severus didn't mind him as much.

One time, James called Severus 'Grandpa Sev'

Ginny and Harry laughed for awhile, and Severus simply stared in disbelief.

"I'm only forty four." He grumbled, but didn't seem too put out.

After Ginny had taken James home, Harry asked if Severus minded.

"I suppose it depends on you, it doesn't bother me." Was the only response he got before he was shooed off home.

Next time they saw grandpa Sev, Ginny revealed that she was pregnant again.

Severus congratulated her, and she asked if he wanted to come to the baby shower they were due to have in three months time.

He said he'd think about it

He ended up going, and that's when everyone figured out Severus was a grandpa.

Severus entered, and found a three year old running full speed at him,

"Gran'pa Sev! Hi! Momma's havin' a baby!"

Everyone turned to look at the tall man, who had a child motioning to be picked up at his feet.

"Hello James, thank you for informing me."

If anyone tells you he picked James up and hugged him, they are absolutely lying.

The party went without a hitch, James taking it upon himself to introduce his Grandpa to everyone, who already knew him.

Two months later, Ginny waddled into his kitchen, Harry following shortly behind.

Severus would be lying if he said he wasnt at least a little disappointed when James wasn't with them.

Soon though, he found out why.

"Absolutely not."

Harry tried to reason, but Severus was talking

"Going around with my name! What are you thinking?"

"Severus, you're their grandfather. It's mandatory!"

"No I'm not."

"Yes you are."

"I'm just, place holding. They won't want anything to do with me when they get older."

This time, Ginny spoke up.

"Listen here, Severus Snape. You are their grandfather, and you will be for the rest of their lives. You don't get a say anymore. You can't back out because something big is happening! You're family now, suck it up and deal with it. Now, Severus for a middle name?"

Severus huffed but smiled.

"What about Albus for the first?" He suggested, not really giving it much thought.

"Albus Severus Potter." Harry said, a small smile gracing his face.

"I love it. Do you think it's alright?" Ginny turned her attention to Severus.

A little taken aback by the fact that they cared for his input, he nodded, "I think it's a wonderful name. Middle name could be better though."

Ginny glared, "I'm going to floo my mum and see if she likes it. I'll see you two later."

They nodded their goodbyes and just before she left she turned and waddled back, "Would you like me to bring James over for awhile later?"

"That would be lovely."

Two months later, Severus was readying for bed, when a knock was on his door.

Assuming it to be Harry, he simply called, "Come in, I'm in the kitchen."

The door opened, and in stepped Ron Weasley.

Holding a sleeping James.

"Hey look I'm really sorry, Ginny's gone into labour and were needed at the hospital there's complications and- can you watch him?"

Severus' chest swelled with worry, but he agreed to watch James.

After telling Ron to inform him if anything happens, the ginger was gone.

Severus finished getting ready for bed, and decided to sleep in the living room with James.

He set the boy up on an armchair and slept on his two seater, although halfway through the night he was awoken by James climbing on him.

He didn't want to be by himself, so Severus just decided to take the boy to his bed.

No point in them being uncomfortable.

The morning came, and by lunch time Ron was back.

He said they asked for Severus at the hospital, and if he'd mind taking James with him.

Severus agreed, and soon they were out the door.

"Mummy! Daddy!" Was the shrill little voice as he ran into the room, Ginny smiling at him, "Hello sweetheart. Did you sleep at grandpa Sevs house last night?"

The two continued in conversation while Harry spoke to Severus, and assured him everything was okay.

Albus was upside down, and he wouldn't of had time to turn before he was born as his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck, so they had to go through an early induced labour at only seven and a half months.

Albus as a result was tiny but otherwise fine, it seemed they caught him just in time.

Severus was the third person to hold him, and he was barely bigger than his hand.

James gave Albus a kiss, but was otherwise unbothered.

James was going to Stay with Severus for the rest of the week, just so Harry could get himself together. He wasn't in a fit state to care for a child and needed to be with his wife.

James decided he wanted to stay with his grandpa, and so he did.

By the time Lily came along, Severus was a pro at this babysitting business.

He was, apparently, the childrens favourite person, which he found astonishing.

He made sure to have custard creams for the next time they stayed over.

James asked for Severus to come to his graduation, and the man, despite never wanting to set foot onto Hogwarts grounds again, agreed.

He smiled at his grandson, and suddenly Hogwarts didn't seem to be filled with evil.

He never became a professor again, but he would go in and give the newt level students a few lessons every so often.

Okay okay this turned out kinda long but I just love domestic Snape so much. If any of y'all want me to continue just tell me??

with halys, we wanted to go back to basics with member groups. characters will be categorized as either a full-fledged member of the order of the phoenix, as a member or ally of voldemort’s death eaters, or as a civilian. peep more after the cut!

ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

Founded by Albus Dumbledore in 1970 as a response to the rise of Lord Voldemort, the Order of the Phoenix is a secret resistance organization that covertly works with the Ministry of Magic to oppose purist, anti-Muggle, and anti-Muggleborn sentiment within Wizarding society.

Because of the highly secretive nature of the Order of the Phoenix, membership is extremely limited, with members hand-chosen by Dumbledore himself for specific skillsets, as well as personal traits and temperaments. Outside of the Order, almost all civilians are unaware of the Order’s existence, though they likely pass around whispers of various resistance groups—including the known terrorist resistance organizations (more on those later).

a note on aurors:

While the Ministry of Magic officially views the Order of the Phoenix as a “renegade” group, among its ranks are several Aurors, who alongside other members of the Order participate in secret, sudden attacks on the Death Eaters and their sympathizers. The Ministry is unaware of their involvement with the Order, and as a result, their missions at work and in the Order will sometimes converge or even oppose each other.

Known Aurors in the Order: Alastor Moody, Frank Longbottom, Alice Longbottom (nee ---)

DEATH EATERS

The Death Eaters were formed out of the Knights of Walpurgis in the 1950’s, and include Lord Voldemort’s followers from his early days at Hogwarts as well as more recent recruits. They are a radical, pure-blood supremacist group that employs heavy use of the Dark Arts in their goal to take over Wizarding Britain and reign above Muggles. Death Eater activity at this time includes stealth attacks, espionage, mass murder, and torture—of Muggles and wizardkind alike. When examining the hierarchy within their ranks, a few distinct groups begin to emerge.

The Death Eaters vastly outnumber the Order of the Phoenix, and most of their ranks are built from grunts: purebloods, Sacred Twenty-Eight and otherwise, as well as like-minded half-bloods. These members follow orders and take directions without being involved in the higher planning. In addition to zealots looking to move up the social ladder, this group includes pureblood upper crust types without the magical knowledge or skill to be useful in the inner circle, amongst others. Regardless of their standing, there is an unwavering support for the vision Voldemort has built for them: a Britain in which they are superior to the Muggles who currently run the show—an enticing prospect for certain witches and wizards who may not have much else left to lose.

inner circle

Lord Voldemort’s inner circle are branded with the Dark Mark and can be thought of as his war generals, lieutenants, and most valued assets. These members often have greater influence within the Ministry of Magic and other Wizarding institutions, whether because of monetary ties or a family history of involvement. Some, if lacking in influence, are simply magical prodigies.

Ultimately, every member of the inner circle has a purpose to their being there, skills to contribute, and a vision to see fulfilled. The expectations are high and the stakes are higher: to fail Voldemort at this level carries a death sentence.

creatures

A number of creatures—giants and werewolves, mostly—fight on behalf of the Death Eaters, though none are honored with the Dark Mark or inclusion within the ranks of the organization proper. This group includes free agents who may be assisting Death Eaters because they see a Death Eater victory as inevitable, and some who truly believe that Lord Voldemort will reward them for their service with fair treatment after the war.

This group also includes Fenrir Greyback’s pack of werewolf followers, who like him believe that werewolves are superior to humans - magical and non-magical alike - and, in some cases, believe that humans should be turned as young as possible. Fenrir Greyback is particularly ruthless, punishing victims with wolflike attacks even in his human form, going out of his way to be near potential victims when the full moon strikes, and seeking any means of attaining more prey.

CIVILIANS

While civilians are, by definition, not affiliated with the Death Eaters or the Order of the Phoenix, the fact is that there is never truly a “neutral” position, in any situation, but particularly in times of war, where questions of basic dignity and humanity are on the line. While civilians may or may not be fighting, they do all have a position, an angle, a perspective. The personal is political, and the spectrum is wide.

While they may not have been invited to the Order of the Phoenix—or may have turned down an invite even if they had been—many civilians are sympathetic to Muggles and Muggleborns. (After all, remember that there have been several pro-Muggle Ministers of Magic in recent memory).

Some pro-Muggle civilians are forming their own resistance groups, without the magical and political power of the Order of the Phoenix. These resistance groups vary in their missions: some provide relocation assistance to Muggles and Muggleborns who feel unsafe in the current environment. Some attack purist civilians, looking to cut off anti-Muggle sentiment at the source using any means necessary. (More to come here—stay tuned.)

Most Muggle sympathisers are sympathetic to the cause but frightened about putting themselves and their family at personal risk. They instead go along with the status quo, assisting Muggles, Muggleborns, and resistance organizations if and when they believe they can do so unseen. Some may funnel resources to the Order: funds, space, services such as medical care or wand repair. Witches and wizards who know Albus Dumbledore likely have an idea that he is doing something behind closed doors and want no direct part of it, but if one of his soldiers needs help, they will assist.

Some witches and wizards consider their allegiance to be to the Ministry of Magic and to its authority. These folks are most interested in combating the rise of the Death Eaters through legal and government-sanctioned means, especially via raids through the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. (These tactics would be more efficient if these people weren’t also seeking to appease major donors within the wizarding community—including Sacred Twenty-Eight families with known purist leanings, and if the Ministry didn’t have a number of moles, plants, and defectors to the Death Eaters.) Maintaining order is the top priority for these people, sometimes at the cost of justice, civil rights, or personal conscience.

Purists may come from Sacred 28 families or from other pureblood stock, or may even be halfbloods. They may align themselves with purist ideology for a number of reasons: they might genuinely believe that magic makes them superior to muggles. They may not have that opinion, but see a benefit in aligning themselves with purist culture, whether that reason is material (for instance, access to more historically powerful families and their business assets) or personal. Given the state of the war, some folks may see a Death Eater victory as inevitable, and are seeking to ally themselves with the winning side sooner rather than later. Many people assume purist types all come from a upper-class background, and while that stereotype may has a grain of truth (with historically pure families taking advantage of connections to the Muggle upper-class to secure status, like the Malfoys), it’s also worth noting that some witches and wizards from less-esteemed backgrounds may turn to magic as a marker of superiority compared to their lower-class Muggle peers. These witches and wizards, desperate for the higher status and privilege they have been denied and looking for a scapegoat, are also more likely to point fingers at Muggles as having a part in their misfortunes.

Your character may not fit neatly into any of these groups, but chances are they have an opinion—lacking a clear stance, after all, is a stance all its own. As always, if you have any questions or need clarification on anything, just let us know.

COMING OUT AS A SLYTHERIN

So Ars Technica published my "coming out" essay yesterday since it was Pride Day, plus the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter, and they do general geek culture stuff on weekends. Link: https://arstechnica.com/the-multiverse/2017/06/coming-out-as-a-slytherin/

In the article I detail how there have been a series of “closets” whose doors I have had to kick down, from coming out as bisexual in the 1980s, to coming out as a pro who also wrote fanfic in the 2000s, to, eventually, realizing I had to come out as Slytherin, too.

I talk about the pervasiveness of the anti-Slytherin bias in the books, which carries right through from Harry’s first hearing of the word through the epilogue:

“One of the magics of the Potter books for me was that as I read them, I was transported back to feeling like a kid again. … My journey as a fan… started from a childlike devouring of the books where I took Harry’s journey at face value. Harry hated Snape and Draco? I hated Snape and Draco. Harry thought all Slytherins are bad? I thought all Slytherins are bad. It’s a book for kids, right? A simplistic worldview is appropriate and comforting.”

“But the moment I leapt into fandom headlong was also when book six, Half-Blood Prince, came out. In that book, Harry keeps on thinking that Snape and Draco are villains. It’s also a book where many adult readers started realizing that Snape and Draco are victims. I went back and re-read the entire series through Snape and Draco’s eyes and what I saw was very different.”

“I guess you could say it was the Potter fandom equivalent of being woke. The anti-Slytherin bias throughout the series was so strong, and yet I had never noticed it before. It was so pervasive. Harry takes the word of various characters throughout the books as “truth” so long as the person saying it was considered one of the “good guys.” Take Hagrid for example. When he tells Harry in the very first book “There’s not a witch or wizard who went bad who wasn’t in Slytherin,” Harry believes him and so do we.”

“Hagrid probably believes it, too. But it’s not even true within the books. We meet plenty of non-Slytherins who “went bad,” including Peter Pettigrew (Gryffindor) and Gilderoy Lockhart (Ravenclaw).”

“And in the epilogue, 19 years later, although Harry himself seems to have finally decided that Snape was a hero and all Slytherins aren’t bad, the rest of the Wizarding World has clearly fallen right back into the old bias. His son’s angst about being Sorted basically boils down to “Daddy, what if I’m in Slytherin?”

“Try replacing that with “Daddy, what if I’m queer?” Harry has the good-parent response: we’ll still love you. But society won’t.”

The barriers we erect in our minds, and between people in society, are imaginary. But as Dumbledore tells Harry in the “King’s Cross”/limbo scene, just because something is all in your head doesn’t make it not real.

In the article I also talk about how in my college campus activist days bisexuals were seen as “only half gay” and for that reason I felt only “half welcome” in the queer community at first. Part of my journey as an activist was learning that I couldn’t let that bias keep me from participating and that the main gatekeeper I had to get past wasn’t in “the community” but in my own head.

So this article is for all my Slytherin peeps out there, whether your road to self-acceptance was hard or easy! It’s because of you I was able to see how that bias had shaped my worldview and to take pride in the qualities in myself that make me a Slytherin at heart.
