thinking how Dick always finds ways to hang out with his brothers. but reality is that, they have grown with different schedules and locations and responsibilities. his brothers have partners now. Jason is a dad for goodness sake.
Dick finds himself often emotional. he is a man nearing his 30's, but he still often misses his younger brothers.
so Dick tries.
Dick, calls Jason, who is in Star City: Hey, Little Wing. You free this Saturday? There's a new action movie. Want to check it out?
Jason, pouts at the other end of the phone: Sorry, Dickie. I have to attend to Lian's reading playdate at her friend's house. Roy refuses to go.
Dick, feels a pang on his chest: Oh, of course, yeah. I'm glad you're there to teach Roy how to read.
Jason, laughs which makes Dick smile: Hey, lay off! But maybe we can watch another movie next month? My schedule is kinda booked this month-
Dick, doesn't mean to cut his brother off: No problem, Jay. Next time, yeah? Maybe me and Wally can visit soon.
Jason: You both should. Lian is asking for her favorite uncles. Please don't tell Tim and Conner I told you that.
Dick, laughs: I'll see you soon, Little Wing. Miss you. Say "hi" to Lian for me. And "fuck you" to Roy for me.
Jason, chuckles which makes Dick smile again: You got it, Goldie. See ya!
Dick keeps trying.
Dick knocks on the door of Tim's room and cherishes this moment, because Tim is barely at the Manor. Well, none of them mostly are at the Manor for years now. He enters when Tim says "come in".
Dick: Timmy!! Want to try this new coffee-
he closes his mouth when he sees Tim in front of the mirror, wearing a suit and fixing a tie.
Dick, frowns: Oh, you leaving already?
Tim bites his lip as he concentrates to fixing the tie. Dick chuckles and approaches Tim to do it for him.
Tim: Yes, going to Metropolis for a business meeting. Then off to New York after, booked that hotel for me and Kon.
Tim gestures to the packed bag on the floor.
Dick, feels a pang on his chest: Oh, right right. I almost forgot.
he backs up and smiles at his brother.
Dick: Well, looks like you're ready to go. You look handsome, Baby Bird.
Tim, smiles: Thank you, Dick.
he gives Dick a quick hug and Dick wishes it was longer.
Tim: See you next week, Dick!
Dick: Have fun! See you, Timmy!
before Tim exists his room, he turns around.
Tim: You were saying something a while ago? Sorry, I didn't catch it.
Dick: It's nothing.
Tim: You better tell me when I come back. Bye, Dick!
Dick, says to the empty room: Bye...
and Dick keeps trying.
Dick is barely with Damian during patrols anymore, so he's glad his brother called for back up, since Bruce was in another planet with the Justice League. Damian has grown so much, he's been using new suits, because he has outgrown a few of the older ones.
Nightwing: Hey, Robin. Want to catch some Big Belly burgers after we freshen up?
Robin: I think I'll have to pass, Nightwing. Superboy is picking me up in a few.
Nightwing, feels a pang on his chest: Right, right. He better not drop you.
Robin, snorts, but he smiles so Nightwing smiles also: He would never.
before Nightwing leaves Robin on the rooftop, he leans down to kiss the top of his head. it hits him that very long ago, he acted as his father figure when Batman was gone.
Nightwing: Take care, okay? Love you.
Nightwing thought he would not get a response, but as soon as he turns around to head for home, he hears Robin.
Robin: Love you, Akhi.
Dick has come to accept that his brothers are grown up now. that maybe he wasn't part of their lives anymore, he could honestly cry-
so when the door opens of their house, he expects to see Wally, bringing flowers and food like usual, but he sees his brothers instead. Jason has a box on his hand, which happens to be a copy of the movie they were supposed to watch. Tim has a bag of coffee from the new cafe place. Damian has a bag from Big Belly Burger. and if there tears on his eyes when they hang out that night, at least he's got his brothers to cuddle with on the couch.

Goodbye Mr.Darling (Howdy Pillar x Reader)
Part 2!!!
Here is Part 1 // On the last part is where Wally cheats on you and leaves you.
Wally Darling Masterlist!!
Two weeks have passed by, and the sadness was hitting you hard. You felt betrayed you didn’t think Wally would have done that to you, you really thought he was the one. But I guess not everyone can keep a promise. You would watch Wally and his new Sweetheart through your window, they were holding hands and laughing. Wally seemed so happy with his new sweetheart. The other neighbors were ashamed of Wally but they didn’t dare say anything to him, afraid to anger the yellow Tic Tac. But as time passed by you became numb, thinking you would never find love again...
As morning rolled around you laid on your bed, the warm blankets around you. You sighed, you needed to buy more food, you were running out. But you didn’t want to leave to scared to face Wally and his Sweetheart. But you had to, you had to face the reality. Wally Darling isn’t yours anymore, and one day you had to face him. But after awhile of overthinking you had the courage to finally get out of bed and get ready and head off to the store.
You walked around the neighborhood with a fake smile and guess who’s there!! Yeah that’s right Wally and his Sweetheart! They were outside of Wally’s house, both of them were painting outside. The sight broke your heart so you just walked away as fast as you can. In the meantime while Wally and Sweetheart are having their little date Home would just stare at Sweetheart, you were so much better for Wally not this Sesame Street Ragdoll.
As you finally made it to the store, you sigh. Holding back any tears. You then started your shopping. Wanting to hurry up so you can go back Home and cry. It took awhile to get your shopping done and once you were done you went to the check out.
“Hello Y/N! How are you doing today? Did you find everything?”
Looking up and seeing Howdy, he had a huge smile across his face. “Oh hi Howdy...Yeah I found everything.” You say softly, looking down soon after. “Just still getting over the break up..”
“I’m sorry to hear that Y/N, I know it’s hard for you but I’m sure you’ll find your special butterfly!” He said, as he started to scan your items. You just nodded and smiled weakly at him. As Howdy just nodded, soon after he finished scanning your items and as you were about to pay he stopped you. “It’s on the house Y/N, don’t worry.”
“Are you sure?! No Howdy let me pay, I simply can’t let you!” You say, now looking at him. He just smiled sweetly at you.
“Don’t worry Y/N, I know how hard it’s been for you. I just wanna give you a helping hand.” He said. You just smile, it’s been awhile since you smiled. “And Y/N...If you need someone to talk I’m here for you.” You smile and nodded at him, and soon after you walked away.
Howdy watched you as you walked away, he smiled to himself. This sweet boy has always liked you, but he never had a chance to get with you since Wally won you over. But now that he is out of the picture he can finally get close to you. He’ll show Wally on what he’s missing out. Howdy soon then started to chuckle to himself as he started to raise the prices of the Apples and also put them behind a glass door. Now that yellow gremlin can’t steal his apples.
Walking back to your house you smiled. It was so sweet of Howdy to help you out, you placed your stuff on the table and started to put everything away. You sigh and thought about what Howdy said to you. Maybe you should talk to someone, it would be good for you. You just waited for the prefect time to call him.
As hours passed by the sun was setting and you were sitting in your living room, nervously. You pick up the phone and started to dial his phone, and waited for him to answer and when he wasn’t picking up you were about to hang up and go to bed but a voice spoke up. “Oh I’m sorry for not picking up the phone quickly Y/N. I was cleaning the store, can I help you?”
“Oh my bad, I didn’t want to bother you...But about what you said early, about having someone to talk too..” You say, your voice getting softer. “But I don’t wanna bother you..”
“Oh, you’re no bother Y/N. If you want to I can be at your place in ten minutes.” He said. you smiled and nodded to yourself. “Oh! Really? Yes that would mean a lot to me.”
“Okay then, I’ll see you in a few my dear.” And with that he hangs up. You just sat there turning a slight pink, did he just call you dear? You shake your head and sigh.
When ten minutes passed by you heard a soft knock on your door. Opening it you saw Howdy, he smiled at you. You smile back and invited him in. Both of you, sat down on your living room couch.
“So...What did you want to talk about Dear?”
You just look down and take a deep breath. “It hurts Howdy, it hurts seeing him happy with someone else. I really thought I was his special Apple.” Howdy just looked at you, frowning. Your head was down, and he just gently patted your back. “I just can’t believe he broke his promise with me. I can’t believe he went behind my back and did that to me! I’ve done nothing but showed him love and kindness..”
“Oh Dear, I’m sorry. He deserves nothing but rotten apples. He’s missing out on an amazing person. You’re so wonderful and anyone would be so lucky to have you.” He said, now looking at you. “Y/N you’re amazing and I really mean it, I’m truly sorry for what that Yellow brat did to you.” He started to say, he gently grabbed your hand and looked at you. “You’re a great person Y/N...you’re so beautiful.” But that last part was a whisper, hoping you wouldn’t hear it.
You sat there looking at him, blushing now. Why was he telling you these sweet things. You didn’t mind but why? “Oh..you’re so sweet Howdy. I really appreciate it.” But you turn more red as he called you beautiful. “You really think so? Me Beautiful?”
“I’m sorry Y/N, I didn’t mean too. I mean you are beautiful but I don’t want to make things awkward, it just slipped out... I’m sorry.”
You shake your head and smile at him, as you slightly grip his hand. “Don’t worry Howdy. I don’t mind it.” Blushing now, he blushed and looked away.
“Uhh, Y/N I have to confess something to you..” He said, you looked confused and just nodded at him. “I’ve had a crush on you for awhile now. It’s been eating me, I really wanted to ask you out but Wally beat me to it.”
“You do?” You say, looking at him. He just nodded and sighed.
“I really want to treat you as a Princess/Prince, I want to be the one who puts a smile on your face. I want to be the person who you can cry to. I want to be your everything Y/N...So please give me a chance.” He asked you.
You just look away for a brief second, and thought about it. And look back at him. Wally just broke up with you two weeks ago, you couldn’t just move on fast. It wouldn’t be right, but then again Wally did cheat on you so it doesn’t really matter. As you look at Howdy you smile at him. “Are you sure? I mean I’m nothing special.”
“Non sense my dear! You’re everything, I want to love you Y/N, I want to show you my love Y/N...If you allow me.” He said. “Please my Dear, will you go out with me.”
His words touched your heart, it’s been awhile since someone has spoke to you like that. It made you blush. You just nodded. “Yes Howdy, I would love too!”
“Wonderful! How about tomorrow I give you a special date.”
“Yes, that sounds wonderful Howdy! I would love that.” You say, as you look at him, maybe this isn’t gonna be bad. Howdy just looked at you and smiled. “And I promise my dear Y/N I won’t break your heart, I’ll show you my love for you.”
As you and Howdy talked for awhile and soon after he had to leave and rest. And you were excited about your date tomorrow you decided to fall asleep early. You had to pay a visit to a special friend of yours.
From the distance Wally watched Howdy leave your house, he seemed very happy and Wally felt odd. Was it jealously? No right! He had his sweetheart, he loved his sweetheart....It’s not like he misses your beautiful smile and sweet laugh. He couldn’t help but think about you, did he make the right choice of leaving you? Wally just sat alone in the dark of his house. While Home would creek around telling Wally “I told you so.”
The next morning
You woke up filled with energy, you were excited about later on today. As you got up and did your morning routine, you had a few hours before the date. You really wanted to visit a friend of yours. You grabbed your garden tools and flower seeds and walk out of your house and walked towards Home. Waving at them.
“Hello Home! How are you doing today?” You said cheerfully, holding up the bag of seeds and tools. “Remember that promised I made you.”
Home started to creek quite quickly, They were happy.
“I’m happy to see you too Home. I’m sorry I couldn’t visit you. It just hurts seeing Wally with his new Sweetheart..” You say, and frown slightly, but soon after you smiled. “But I have some great news for you Home.”
Home was knocking all over, very happy and you just giggle. “Don’t worry I'll tell you while I’m planting these seeds for you.
As you did your promise of planting flowers around for Home you told them about Howdy and how you guys have a date tonight. And Home seemed very happy for you. You smile and blush.
“All done!” You say, finally done with planting the seeds all around Home. “These flowers are going to look beautiful Home!” You say, wiping you forehead with your arm. “I can’t wait to see them grow!”
“Can’t wait to see what?”
Jumping slightly, you saw Wally. Great... “These flowers Mr.Darling... I promised Home I would plant these for them. And unlike you I don’t break a promise.” You say in a cold harsh tone of voice. You look away and smile at Home.
“Don’t worry Home, I’ll make sure to water these seeds for you.” You say, and started to gather your things. Wally just stood there, looking at you. You look at Wally and raised an eyebrow. Looking back at Home and smile. “I mean I could tell Mr.Darling here but I’m sure he’ll break that promise...” You say, and giving him the side eye.
Wally just stood there, ouch that hurt him. “I’ll give the stupid flowers water...I promise ” He grumbles to himself.
You just ignore him. “Don’t worry Home, I’ll make sure I come by and tell you about my date. I hope you have a wonderful day.” You say and began walking off but before you walked off you looked at Wally. “Have a great day Mr.Darling.” And with that you left, Wally just stood there. He felt sad, feeling a single tear falling down.
“Oh Y/N why did I let you go.”
Time Skip
As the sun was setting and you were running around your house getting ready. You had your best outfit. Honestly you were quite nervous.
You then heard a small knock. Running to the door, but before you open it you took a deep breath and open the door and there stood Howdy, with a pretty suit. “Wow you look beautiful my sweet Butterfly.” He said, grabbing your hand and placing a kiss on it.
Blushing you giggle. “And you look handsome.” You say, as you look at him. You then walked out and closed your door. “So what do you have in mind?”
“Ah it’s a surprise, I need you to close your eyes.” He said, you look at him and just nod. Closing your eyes, he grabbed your hand and started to walk off with you. “And no peaking my Dear.”
After walking for a few minutes he stopped and spoke up. “You can open up your eyes my Dear.” He said, you slowly started to open them and gasp slightly. Seeing this~
It was beautiful, you look at him and hug him. “It’s wonderful! Thank you!”
Howdy blushed, he chuckled nervously and just nodded. Grabbing your hand he guided you to a chair, pulling it out for you. Then he took a seat to himself. Honestly this was very sweet of him, maybe he isn’t gonna be bad after all.
This sweet man had everything planned out, he made the food. He made a fresh pie with cookies, he also made mini sandwiches. And he had fresh lemonade, he really thought about this date. He even had soft music playing around.
And after you guys were done eating, he stood and walked next to you. He held a hand for you. “If you don’t mind my dear, but could I trouble you for a dance.”
Blushing you just nodded, he pulled the chair out for you. Holding his hand out for you, you took it and he pulled you close. Bringing you close against his body. Oh boy. He placed two hands on your shoulder and the two around your waist. You place your hands on his shoulders. And soon after both of you were dancing to the music, bodies moving to the songs.
He placed his forehead against yours. “Thank you for giving me a chance Y/N.” He said softly. You smile and look into his eyes. “Of course Howdy, thank you for being that new Sunshine for my life.” You say, both of you blush. You stopped dancing. Now just standing there. foreheads against each other, he stares into your eyes. Wow its like a beautiful ocean, he could swim in them all day long.
He started to lean in slowly, you look at him and lean in too. Your lips touched softly. Now kissing. You close your eyes and wrap your arms around his neck, and he wrapped his arms around your waist. Bringing you closer. The kiss went on for awhile and soon after her pulled away.
“Wow, that was wonderful my Dear.” You just blush even more. “It was Howdy.”
He then pulled away and looked at you. “Y/N I was wondering...Would you make the happiest Neighbor and be mine.”
“Yes, I would love too!” You say and hug him once again and kiss his cheek.
You and Howdy spent the rest of night talking and dancing. Honestly he took your mind off from that Yellow Tik Tac. But as it was getting late you guys cleaned up and started to head back to the neighborhood. He walked you to your house.
“I hope you have a great night my Dear, please rest up.” Howdy said, placing a small kiss on your lips. Smiling back at him as you return the kiss and pull away. “You too my handsome man.” You say giggling. Howdy just blushed and nodded. Both saying your goodnights.
As you close your door, you smile. Wow you had butterflies in your stomach. As you were about to walk off you heard a knock on your door. Howdy? Did he forget something, you open the door with a smile as you expected Howdy but your smile faded away.
“Mr.Darling? Do you need something?”
Wally just stood there, he looked at you and soon after he broke down crying. “Please Y/N....I miss you! Please take me back, I regret what I did to you.” He cried out. Getting on his knees, he reached out for your hand but you moved it away. “Please Sweetheart...”
You just stood there. “Excuse me? Are you serious, after what you did!” You hiss at me. “What happened to your other sweetheart.”
“They left me...They used me...”
“Good, you deserve it.” You simply say. “I’m happy with Howdy now. Now if you may leave your getting your tears all over my place.” You say, backing up and as you were about to close the door, he stopped you.
“I promise not to hurt you anymore, please. You’re my everything..”
“A promise from you? HA! No Thank you..” You look away and sigh. “Goodnight Mr.Darling.” You say and close the door, locking it.
Wally just stood there, tears running down his face. He really lost you, he lost person who really loved him. He was so dumb for hurting you...He wanted you back. As Wally walked back to his house he just cried inside. While in the other hand Home just stares ay Wally, rough knocks were heard.. “I told you so.”

Of All People - Impulse x Reader
y/c=your name e/c=eye colour h/c= hair colour n/n=nickname y/f/n=your full name s/h/n=superhero name
*This will be two years after the events of ‘Endgame’. However in this story, Wally didn’t die. I don’t like the fact that he did, so many of my fics that take place after the end of the series will have him still alive. You’re welcome. Happy reading.
“Ugh! You are such an ignorant ass!” “Me!? I’m not the one who totally blew the mission thirty seconds after touching down. If you couldn’t handle the environment why didn’t you just stay at home like any smart person would?!” “Because, unlike SOME people, I don’t let a few little weaknesses get in the way of my freaking job! God! How did you even make it onto the team future boy? Shouldn’t you have fixed your little machine and blazed back to where you belong?!” “Maybe because the technology doesn’t exist in order for me to fix it. Did you ever think of that, smart ass?”
Nightwing, Wally, Artemis, Robin and Superboy watched on as their two friends Bart and (y/n) bickered, yet again. M’Gann? Could you do me a favour and link up the whole team except Impulse and (s/h/n)? We all need to talk. Nightwing called to the Martian through his mind. He received a chorus of voices in reply, signalling M’Gann had opened the link between the team, who were spread all throughout the newly rebuilt Tower. We need to do something about these two idiots. Their constant arguing is grating on my nerves. Superboy’s irritated voice echoed in their minds. Dude, when is it not grating on anyone’s nerves? It’s like one constant fight that just jumps from one insignificant thing to another. They have got to stop before one of them, or us, gets hurt because they can’t concentrate on a mission. Wally spoke. Team meeting in 10 minutes in my quarters. They’ll be fighting for at least another half hour, and then they’ll just go cool off either in one of the gyms or their rooms. Nightwing called.
Not even 10 minutes later, the whole team save for the bickering duo in the kitchen had taken a seat in various spots in Nightwing’s bedroom. Dick had shed his costume in this time and donned his usual outfit, complete with his shades, purely out of habit. “Okay, we’ve all met here cause we need to do something to stop (y/n) and Bart from their constant fighting. It’s not good for team morale, nor is it good for the two of them, especially since they’ve been paired off for one of the night patrol shifts that start next week.” “No kidding Dick. I can’t even stand to be in the same thought space as them anymore. Ugh, it’s Wally and Artemis all over again.” M’Gann exclaimed “Dudette, no way!” Wally protested. “Even Artie and I weren’t this bad. We fought yeah, still do, but never to this extent of annoyance.” “He’s right M’Gann. These two are significantly more difficult to be around recently. It’s as if their dislike of each other has only grown in the past few months since (y/n) joined the team as (s/h/n), instead of just being a girl at Bart’s school that he only had to interact with during classes.” Kaldur explained. A sudden though struck Artemis. “Hang on guys. What if it’s not dislike so much as their feelings have grown into something more positive? I mean, there have been a few times where I’ve caught (y/n) making goo-goo eyes at Bart during missions and movie nights. And none of you can possibly tell me you haven’t noticed Bart getting agitated when (y/n) is standing close to one of the guys. I even saw him deck this one guy from one of their classes when I picked him up from school a few days ago. He said the guy had been hitting on (y/n) all day and even slapped her ass as she left for the day. He looked pretty jealous to me.” At this Robin grinned. “Guys, I think I may have a plan.” The team gathered around, grins sprouting on their faces as he explained his idea.
----------------
(S/h/n) and Impulse were silent as they walked through their section of Star City, both still fuming from an argument they’d had before leaving for patrol. Bart scowled as his gaze shifted over (y/n)’s tense figure, regretting the argument as he observed the unshed tears in her eyes. (Y/n) was trying her best to keep a poker face around Impulse, not letting her emotions cloud her thoughts as she worked. She would collapse later on when her patrol was done and she was alone in her room in The Cave.
As the awkward silence continued, they received a transmission from Batgirl. “(S/h/n), Impulse, I’m getting reports of a bank robbery three blocks away from your position. Find the quickest route and put a stop to it ASAP.” “Received Batgirl. We’re on our way.” Impulse responded. He turned to (s/h/n) as they started to run to the location of the robbery. “If we take this next right we’ll get there in about 2 minutes.” (S/h/n) rolled her eyes. “Yeah, but if we keep going straight then make a right in three blocks, we’ll save time and get there in less than a minute. Less corners and traffic to cross.” “Do you have to contradict everything I say?” Impulse snapped, quickly becoming annoyed again. “If you’re wrong I do.” (s/h/n) shot back quickly. Suddenly her ears picked up on a noise coming from the alleyway they were passing, slowing her pace and causing Impulse to slow too. “Right, so that must mean I’m always wrong then.” he snapped back, crossing his arms over his chest. “Why did you stop? We have a robbery to stop.” “Quiet! I hear something.” She shot backwards towards him, slowly approaching a dumpster at the side of the alley. “Oh right, of course only you would hear any regular noise and assume it’s trouble. Can you ever just-“ His tease was cut short as several figures clad in all black dropped from the roofs above, surrounding the pair and quickly restraining Impulse before he could speed into action. (S/h/n) spun around quickly to see her partner in trouble and rushed forward to help him without a word, but quickly realised her mistake as another figure grabbed her from behind and wrapping an arm around her neck. She struggled in the hold before she felt a sharp prick below the arm restricting her airway, then the world started to spin. Before she succumbed to the darkness, she watched as Impulse was injected with some kind of liquid, hearing a panicked “(S/H/N)!” before she fell into unconsciousness in her captor’s embrace.
---------------
“(S/h/n)! (S/h/n), c’mon wake up. Please get up.” Her eyes fluttered open, the dim light around her allowing her to take note of her surroundings. She was in a concrete room of some kind, and across the room from her, chained by his wrists which hung loosely in front of him, was a distressed Impulse. She attempted to move forward and help, but found her arms were restrained above her head, her feet unable to touch the ground. She looked up to see shining metal cuffs around her own wrists, a slight pain shooting through them as she tried to wiggle them free. “Impulse? What happened? How did we get here?” “We were attacked in the alleyway. Neither of us saw them coming. They injected you with some kind of tranquilizer liquid and me with a paralysing serum and brought us here. I’ve tried vibrating my wrists to shatter the cuffs, but it looks like they’re designed to cancel out my powers.” Hearing this, (s/h/n) looked back up at her wrists and attempted to melt the cuffs with her fire ability, then tried to make them brittle with a quick switch to her ice abilities when that failed. Still nothing happened. She felt her elemental powers flow through her towards her arms, but as they reached her wrists it was like the power was somehow repressed or blocked. She grunted in frustration, “My powers aren’t working either. Whoever took us must have been planning this for a while.”
There was silence for a while, a feeling of helplessness falling over the two teens, followed by annoyance, then anger. “This is all your fault, you know.” Impulse stated bluntly. (S/h/n)’s eyes widened, then narrowed at the brunette. “My fault? How in hell is this my fault?” “If you hadn’t gone into that alley we wouldn’t be in this situation.” “Well if you had been watching our perimeter instead of taunting me, you would’ve seen the attack coming. Isn’t that what partners are supposed to do when one person is investigating something? Watch their back in case of danger?” Impulse huffed in annoyance, “Oh yeah this is totally all on me. You don’t have to investigate every sound you hear just cause you’re super paranoid about walking around Star City at night.” “Can you blame me? Star City isn’t exactly the safest city on Earth. I’ve had to learn to be careful when I’m out after sunset so nothing bad happens. Figures the one time I let my guard down and trust the person I’m with is the one time something actually does happen.” She muttered, just loud enough for him to hear. He groaned. “Of all the girls I could possibly have fallen for, it just had to be you didn’t it? Couldn’t have been Danni Peters could it? No, it had to be the (h/c) haired, (e/y) eyed annoyance that is (y/f/n).”
As he registered what he had just said, his hands flew to his mouth, stopping himself from saying anything else, even though the damage was already done. (Y/n)’s eyes widened again, her brain not quite finished processing what she had just heard. “Y-you…. fell for m-me? Then…. h-how come you’re always arguing with me? Why are you always picking on me and things I do?” “I…. I guess it was just easier to hide my feelings for you if I pretended they weren’t there. I mean, it’s obvious you don’t feel the same about me, so it hurt less pretending I hated you when it’s clear you hate me.” (Y/n)’s eyes softened. “Hate you? How could I possibly hate you Bart? You’re such a sweet guy, always worrying about your friends and teammates. You put everyone else’s needs before your own, regardless of the consequences. In truth I’ve liked you for a really long time, basically since you first started at the school. I’ve been doing the same thing as you I guess. Hurt like hell every time one of us threw an insult at the other, but it hurt less than the thought of you rejecting my feelings. I’m sorry for everything I’ve said, I never meant any of it.” Bart smiled softly from across the cold, damp room. “I’m sorry too (n/n). You’re such an amazing girl. I reckon I’ve liked you for just about as long as you’ve liked me, but I was just too scared to confront you about my feelings. Hell, I even slugged Robby Fenwick that day when he wouldn’t leave you alone and slapped your butt. Forgive me?” “I was wondering why he just backed off all of a sudden. Thanks for that, and of course I forgive you.” “Heh, you know. If we manage to get out of this, I wanna take you out on a date. Maybe we can go to that theatre you like and see a show. If you want to that is?” (Y/n)’s eyes lit up at the idea. “I’d love to go on a date with you Bart.”
As soon as she had finished saying that, the room flickered, the image of a dark basement room disappearing to be replaced by a room of graph lines and a mechanical voice repeating the phrase “Simulation Terminated.” They looked towards the sound of a door opening, revealing their teammates, all with silly and smug smiles on their faces. “Told you guys it would work. They just needed that little push to admit their feelings for each other.” Robin chuckled as he entered the room and approached Bart, releasing him from his shackles as Nightwing approached (y/n) to do them same. When the cuffs were off, Bart sped forward to (y/n), catching her as she feel from her restraints and pulling her body to mould with his in a tight hug. “Thank God you’re okay. Are you good to walk? Or do you want me to carry you?” She chuckled at he whispered into her ear softly, “I think I’m fine Bart, I can walk.” However, when she tried to take a few steps forward, her knees buckled, alerting the team to something they hadn’t thought of in their plans. Bart quickly caught and swept her into his arms Bridal Style, scowling at his teammates. “You’re body mustn’t have completely rid the tranquilizer serum from your system yet. You’re still waking up. C’mon, I’ll take you to your room so you can lie down. And as for you guys,” he glared at the rest of the surrounding teens and young adults, “you’re all just lucky she’s not hurt, cause that would mean real bad news for all of you. I’ll come back to release my anger out on you later. Right now, my girlfriend needs to rest.” With that, he turned and walked out of Mount Justice’s simulation room, smiling at (y/n) as she rested her head on his shoulder and drifted into a peaceful slumber.
Meanwhile, Zatanna quirked an eyebrow and smirked after the new couple. “Totally worth it, right guys?” The chorus of agreement was all that needed to be said. Things in The Cave would be much more mellow from now on.

Welcome Home Fic - Saving My Neighbors 0
Aka Prologue (Ch. 0) - ‘Moved’ into the Neighborhood
((A/N: This hasn’t left my mind for weeks, so I’ve decided to write down the fanfiction while I can. Now, this is sort of a coexist verse of toons and puppets; plus Muppets, with humans. A bit like Who’s Framed Roger, Space Jam, Looney Toons Back in Action, the Muppet Movies and maybe a few others as well. This fanfic is... sort of based on Welcome Home ARG, BUT this is a fanfiction and not all of it is true. This is sort of separated from the official/canon version which still works. Now, this is a Wally Darling X OC, plus a guy x guy relationship later on so if you have issues with that, you’re free to leave or not read it 😅. I’m just having some fun with this. This will have some... psychological horror (ish) which I don’t think I have done anything scary like, but once that theme comes in, I’ll try. This is SFW fanfic, despite the scary stuff. Welcome Home is created by @partycoffin/Clown so give them the support and the respect to the creator. This fanfic and AU ‘Saving my Neighbors’ is made by me; @iciwelcome-home which I also go by @ginnyicyidragon which is my main blog. Enjoy my fanfic and I do apologize my grammar.))
Somewhere in the space of darkness, a pale lavender periwinkle rabbit puppet with long lop ears, yellowish orange bowl-like hair, indigo freckles on the cheeks, wearing cyan sweater with rainbow collar part and white shorts with one black stripe on each sides is seemingly laying on the ground on his or their back. His eyes are closed while trying to remember where he is or even how he got into such a state.
'...Where... am I?' He thought. 'I was... standing in front of, but... how am I...?'
Er...ic... Ho...pp...er... yo.......et in... F.… ou......pened... Be... ca...ful…
'Huh? Who is that... talking to me...? Eric... Hopper... That's me. But I can't remember... anything...' He thought, grunting as he opened his blue eyes to see... colorful leaves of trees, seeing the clouds in the sky. It seems the sun is rising. "...Huh?" He slowly sits up, places his right hand behind his head. He winces, "Ow... My head."
The rabbit puppet slowly looks around, seeing he's in the woods as a breeze slightly blows in. "Uh... How did I get here?" Eric mumbled. He tries to remember, but... nothing comes to mind. "I was... walking and ended up here." He quietly said to himself.
He then slowly stood up, dusted himself off. He seems to be only 2ft tall. "Okay, okay... My name is... Eric Hopper, a rabbit puppet... I have a cousin and... um..." He muttered. He tries to think hard then sighs loudly, eyes close, "Ugh! I can't remember much... I don't even know how I got here…"
The rabbit puppet turns around to see if he finds something or anyone nearby to help him. Eric then spots a path leading towards... somewhere. "Oh, good! A path! Maybe this could lead me to civilization!" He smiled with relief then began walking over to the path and headed down the path.
5 minutes later, Eric looks ahead to see a town. "Ah! This is good! Maybe I will get some help and call for help...” He smiled, quickly hurried into town.
But once he entered, he could see colors around him and see some of the houses. It seems kinda quiet. He slowly stops by a building which looks like a post office, looking around, "Is this town… abandoned?”
Before he knew it, once the sun moved in the right spot in the sky, the rabbit puppet suddenly heard birds chirping, feeling warmth and happiness in the air, then… the door of the post office opened by a four feet tall orange colored puppet mailman named Eddie Dear. “Ah~ Time to deliver some mail!” Eddie smiled, adjusting his blue hat.
Eric, after slightly jumping when Eddie opens the door, stares over at Eddie, “.....”
Eddie walks out of the post office and onto the path, but then he stops once he senses someone is staring at him, turns to his right to see Eric standing a few feet from him. He exclaims, jumps back a bit, “Oh! Where did you come from?!” His sudden jump made him hit the mail bag and most of the mail was scattered onto the ground. “Gah! Oh no!” Eddie quickly tries to grab the mail that was in the air.
Feeling bad, Eric went over to Eddie and quickly gathered up the mail that fell on the ground, saying in an apologetic way, “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to scare you…”
“N-no problem! It’s okay!” Eddie replied, kneeling down to pick up the rest of the mail and then standing back up after putting them back in his mail bag. “I just wasn’t expecting to see you there.”
Eric hands over the mail he’d picked up to Eddie, saying, “Yeah, but I still feel bad for scaring you like that. I just arrived here and we--”
“Oh? Are you the new neighbor then??” Eddie questioned, putting the mail Eric gave him in his mail bag.
Eric looks unsure how to answer that question, trying to remember a bit, “Um… I guess so. I’m mostly lost and trying to find some… way to get to a place called the Neighborhood.” Eric wasn’t sure why, but he was technically going to say ‘To find some help and call someone’ however he has a nagging feeling to not say the real reason.
Eddie then smiles, “Well, you’re in luck! This is it!”
“This is it?” Eric repeated, making his lop ears raise a bit. He looks around, surprised to know this area is the Neighborhood.
“Yep! And you’re in luck, I’m about to go around town to deliver some mail to everyone.” Eddie told him, smiling. “This way, you can get to know everyone in the Neighborhood.”
Eric thought about then nods, “Okay, but only if it’s okay with you. I would rather not disturb your job…”
“It’s fine!” Eddie chuckled. “Besides, we can’t have our new neighbor getting lost again. Oh! I almost forgot to introduce myself, the name is Eddie Dear.” He holds out his left hand to Eric to shake hands.
Eric stares at Eddie’s hand, looks up at Eddie and… places his hand in Eddie and grasps it with a smile, “I’m Eric Hopper. I hope we’ll get along.”
Eddie begins shaking Eric’s hand, smiling in a friendly way, “Same here. And I think you’ll love it here! It’ll be like this is your home already.” He releases Eric’s hand and adjusts his mail bag. “Follow me and don’t wander off from me.” He said to Eric, then began heading towards what looks like a blue shop with the words ‘Howdy’s Place’ on it.
Eric stood for a few seconds, looking back where he’d come from while hearing words inside his head…
…What…r you do… do… tell whe… you’re from, act like…n’t… rem… You’ll probably for….. But stay strong… and fi…
Unfortunately, Eric can’t remember nor make out whoever told him. The rabbit puppet shrugs it off and quickly follows after the mailman puppet, not knowing someone is watching from afar…
((A/N: …And we’ll stop there! Short, I know, but I figured maybe in the next chapter, Eric will meet the rest of the neighbors. I hope this is a good start and I hope my grammar wasn’t so bad. Anyway, it seems Eric met Eddie Dear after arriving, which is good. However, it seems Eric forgot some things before moving into the Neighborhood. Why is that? We’ll find out that in the chapter… maybe~ Also, will be post on my A03 account))

the only thing i enjoyed from dark crisis were the halbarry moments and wally calling hal “uncle hal” which is just a very small detail appreciated by my shipper side, but as a comic reader im not really into this event
#listen i just love the concept of wally calling hal 'uncle'#it hits right on my wally getting a good place he can call home with barry/iris#and on my halbarry lowkey adopting wally after finding out about his home situation along with iris#wassi rambles#also still salty and mad they just put yj aside and apparently no one cared bc its really only mentioned in passing#and their tie in doesnt have anything to do with the event and is just a way for the writer to complain about old yj fans

Wally didn’t come into the coffee shop for almost two whole months after their fight—not that she blamed him—she was still vaguely upset with his harsh words. But she had to admit that she’d gotten used to his warm presence every morning, and not seeing him messed her up more than she thought it would. More often than not, she found herself absentmindedly staring at the door, waiting for him to walk in with that stupid grin on his face and proceed to boast and recall whatever exciting exploits he and his friends had accomplished earlier. It hurt not to see or hear him, and she realized that Wally had become the greatest friend she’d ever had.
Barry still came in though, and if he knew who she really was, he didn’t say anything because he still acted like he always did. So, even if Wally were still angry with her, at least he’d kept his word and not said anything to anyone about her identity. Which if she were honest, tasted bitter when she thought about the price she paid for his silence—his friendship.
It was getting colder again, which meant a lot more people were coming and going from the shop, so at least she could take her mind off her feelings for at least a few hours. Until she got home, and all she was left with were them and a whole lot of silence to think about them with. Sometimes she thought about calling Wally, at least to hear his voice. Hell, even if their last words to one another were frigid, she missed the interaction. She’d give anything to hear him, even taking another round of cold snipes and trades.
She heaved a sigh and wiped down the last few tables of the evening rush, smiling politely at the people who were still sitting at tables or so across. Today had been hectic and there’d been no let up of customers until the last hour of the shift. She’d never thought they’d run out of coffee, but it came close to that a couple hours ago.
The bell above the door chimed and with her back turned to the entrance, she didn’t see who came in, but with another barista at the counter ready to take the final orders of the evening, she didn’t particularly care. All she wanted to do was go home and crawl into bed. Sleep until hell froze over. That, or until her feet stopped hurting—whichever came first. She let out a quiet laugh that made her chest ache—Wally would’ve found that absolutely hilarious and probably shot back about how if anyone had the right to complain about their feet hurting, it would be him. God, she really missed Wally.
“Melisandre,” someone called quietly, and she glanced over her shoulder, eyes widening when she saw the familiar red head behind her.
Speak and the Devil will appear.
“Wally,” she breathed, voice thick with shock, and before she could stop herself, she was throwing her arms around his waist, squeezing him tightly.
He returned her hug in fold. “I guess I wasn’t the only one who missed this,” he quipped.
She huffed a laugh and pulled away. “Believe it or not, it doesn’t feel right when you don’t come around.” Her eyes narrowed almost sadly. “I’ve missed seeing you, Wally.”
“Same here,” he replied, then glanced at the clock above the espresso machines. “Are you almost off? I want to take you somewhere.”
Nodding, she took a look at her watch. “I get off in about ten minutes. Can you wait that long, or will you perish from boredom?”
“I think I can survive ten minutes, Melisandre,” he retorted and collapsed into one of the booths. “Hurry though, I don’t want to be late.”
She rolled her eyes and deadpanned, “Wally, I can’t speed time up. That’s not how that works.”
“Works for me.” He proudly stated.
“I wonder why?” she retorted sarcastically, then gave him a smile before wandering off to clean the last tables.
***
Despite the fact that Wally could run anywhere he wanted in less than a second, he still owned a vehicle and that was downright baffling in her opinion.
“Dick got it for me.” He suddenly said, shifting the car into drive and she blinked internally wincing at the mention of her brother.
“I didn’t say anything.”
“I know you didn’t, (Y/N). But you were thinking it.”
“Uh huh,” she doubted and crossed her arms over her chest. “What am I thinking about right now?”
“Knowing you? Probably food, I know you like to ea—” he dissolved into laughter when she reached over and shoved at his side.
“No, I don’t you ass.”
“Really? Because I distinctly remember the time I took a fry off your basket and you looked at me like I’d killed your favorite dog.” (Y/N) glared at him and he pointed at her. “Yeah, that’s the look right there.”
“I don’t like sharing my food,” she said. “You should’ve known better.” Her eyes drifted to the windshield. “So, where are we going?”
“S.T.A.R. labs.”
(Y/N) cocked a brow and stared at him. “Really? S.T.A.R. labs? What’s there?”
Wally shrugged. “Wanted to show you a bit of what it’s like to be me.”
Her eyes narrowed. “You mean you came to see me after all this time and the first thing we’re doing is going to a lab so you can show my what you do?”
His gaze momentarily darted to hers. “Is that a problem?”
“I dunno, I just figured we’d go eat a diner somewhere and apologize to each other.”
“Are you sorry?”
“Beg pardon?”
“Are you sorry? For all of the last three years?”
“Not particularly,” she griped, and he shrugged again.
“Then I’m not sorry for what we said to each other that night.” he let out a sigh. “But I’m willing to let it go, because I’d rather us just have a disagreement than lose what our friendship over it.” he looked at her. “What do you say?”
(Y/N) stared at him for a long moment, then she sighed and nodded. “…Yeah, I agree.”
Wally smiled. “Good.” He turned the wheel and pulled into the parking lot of the lab. “But there is food there for us, so you’ll be satiated anyways.”
“Hardy har har. Shut up, Wallace West,” she shot back, climbing out of the car. Her eyes traveled up the tall building. “Wow, this place is huge, isn’t it?”
She felt him stand next to her. “Yeah. Did you know they had to replace the glass windows a whole bunch of times because Barry and I kept shattering them when we’d run up ‘em?”
(Y/N) blinked, unsurprisingly stating, “No, I did not. But I can see that happening.”
He started towards the doors, leaving her to follow and soon they were stepping into an elevator. She watched him hit the rooftop button and she looked at him.
“If you’re showing me what you do, why are we going to the roof? Shouldn’t we be going to some laboratory inside?”
Wally chuckled. “Patience, young padawan.” He ignored her rolling eyes. “Food first.”
“Oh, dinner in the moonlight? Well, aren’t you just the romantic.” (Y/N) cocked her elbow on his shoulder and grinned. “Don’t tell me you fell in love with me all that time we spent away from each other?”
This time, he was rolling his eyes. “Hardly, (Y/N). I just figured you’d want a nice evening where you weren’t staring at your bland kitchen walls.”
She scoffed and pulled away from him. “Look, I’d paint and hang shit up but the landlord wouldn’t be happy.”
“Since when do you care about making people happy? You’re typically a ‘I’m going to make someone unhappy’ type of person.” Her eyes shifted to his and he waved a hand. “Not what you’re thinking about—I was talking about the coffee shop.”
For a moment, she didn’t say anything, then she hummed. “There’s nothing more fun than telling someone I’m going to get the manager and then do my magic little spin and cheerfully greet, ‘Hi, I’m the manager’.” She grinned. “Does wonders to see Karen’s little head explode.”
Wally chuckled and the elevator dinged. The doors split open, and they walked out onto the rooftop. Surprisingly, the roof was enclosed and lighted, giving her perfect vision and when her eyes fell on them, her heart seemed to stop in her chest, and her feet to a halt.
They stood from the table they’d been sitting at and with her heart hammering against her ribcage, she immediately spun on her heel, intent to flee back into the elevator, only to come chest to chest with Wally, who wrapped his arms around her waist—effectively keeping her in place.
Her feet were still moving on their own accord and she shoved against his chest, trying to get back to the lift. “Wally, move.”
“No, (Y/N),” he murmured, and she could feel her breath starting to come in and out in panicked spurts.
“Wally, please, I’m begging you, move.” She stared up at him and plead, “Please don’t make me do this. I’ll do anything, just please let me leave.”
His evergreen eyes were narrowed in pity, but there was a firmness that rested within that pity and he shook his head. “I can’t let you leave, (Y/N).”
“Wally, please,” she begged, arms starting to go limp against his chest, the tears flooding her vision. “Don’t make me do this.”
“You’ve gotta stop running, (Y/N).”
She couldn’t help the sob that escaped her, and she rested her cheek against his chest. “I hate you…so much.”
“I know,” he murmured.
“You’re a liar and I hate you.”
Wally sighed. “I know you do.”
(Y/N)’s face contorted in anger despite her pain. “I should’ve left the night we fought. I knew you wouldn’t be capable of keeping it from him. From any of them,” she sneered and suddenly pulled away from his grip, eyes flashing with rage.
“This wasn’t your right to tell!” she shouted at him and shoved him in the chest. Wally didn’t budge an inch and she shoved him again. “God, I was so naïve to assume you’d keep your fucking mouth shut! That’s one thing you’re not capable of doing!”
She growled and turned from him, running her hands over her face. “Three years of relative peace shot straight down the fucking drain,” she shot him a teary glower. “All because of you and your big bleeding heart for your best friend.”
Wally frowned. “I’m doing what I think is best, (Y/N).”
“Forcing me to meet them isn’t what’s best, Wally! I didn’t want to be found! I didn’t want to be associated with them again!” she snarled and in an instance her anger cooled, her shoulders drooping as she lamented, “…This wasn’t a decision you should’ve made. This was never your right to decide. For me…or for them.”
“Perhaps it wasn’t,” he agreed. “But if you weren’t going to draw the line in the sand, I was.”
(Y/N) met his gaze and held it for a long moment, then she turned her attention to the four men who were standing in front of the table, their expressions a mixture of regret, anger, and relief.
She let out a long sigh and reached up to rub at her temples. “Let me guess, I’m not allowed to leave until we’ve had our picture-perfect reunion scene?”
Wally nodded. “The elevator is sadly,” his hand shot backwards and with a sharp crackle of lightning, the light went out. “out of order.”
(Y/N) shook her head in disappointment at him then declared, “The next time I run, I’m settling in a city that has no superheroes.”
“Good plan,” he quipped. “But I don’t think there’ll be anymore running.”
She got up in his face and hissed, “Then you underestimate my feelings regarding the brothers and father before me.”

An Angel’s Lament, Chapter 1: Heaven’s Gate.
This story will go into how Sammy and Susie’s relationship played out in my “canon” AU. It will be made up of four shorter chapters, of which this is the first. I had a lot of fun writing this one, and I hope you all enjoy it, too!
This first chapter is just going to be pre-relationship, but I promise, the next one won’t waste any time.
---
A sheet of paper lay blank on Sammy’s desk- he had to write something for the upcoming Alice Angel episode, and he was drawing a blank on it. This was relatively serious music, not the cartoonish bops that Bendy usually sang and that Sammy could write in his sleep. It’s just a job, he reminded himself, Just try out a couple different starting rhythms, go with whatever seems best, and go from there.
Just as Sammy had found the right starting rhythm, there was a knock at his office door- third one that day. He grumbled as he went to answer it. Maybe it was Wally, asking for keys. Or, maybe it was someone asking to use his Goddamned pump switch for a flood from the Goddamned ink machine. As it turned out, it was just a random employee- probably their cellist, but who could keep them straight- reminding Sammy of some meeting that Joey was dragging the entire music department to.
Sammy joined the crowd of tired-looking, ink-stained musicians heading for the break room Joey was meeting them in, thinking about how he really ought to get out of this studio. Sammy knew he was capable of a far better than cartoon songs, and he was certainly better than the working conditions Joey kept them under. But no matter how much he thought about it, he didn’t know where to go from here, and moving on from the studio might mean working without Jack for the first time in years. If it was far from here, it would mean living without him for the first time in years, and that was hard to think about. One day. One day Sammy would take the plunge. He hoped so, at least.
Once everyone had gathered into the break room, Joey started talking. He was smiling broadly, but lord knew that that didn’t mean anything.
“Hello, everyone. I'm here to share some exciting news! I’m sure you remember recording ‘Lonely Angel’ a few months ago, right? Well, the episode containing it hit the silver screens just a few days ago, and guess what? It’s going to be played on mainstream musical stations on the radio for the next month- most likely longer if it does well. I have to say that not even I expected this. Susie, come on up!”
A woman from the audience joined Joey at the front of the room, curls bouncing as she moved. She looked excited enough to combust any second.
“Did you ever think they’d be saying your name on the radio, my angel?” Joey asked.
“Well... to be honest... It’s something I’ve always dreamed of! So, yes!” Susie replied.
Joey laughed. “Now that’s the kind of confidence I like to see! All I can say is, good job everyone. This is going to be a big boost for the studio’s popularity. And I think we’ll have to have a lot more Alice Angel songs from now on.”
If it was possible, Susie’s smile got even bigger.
“Dismissed!” Joey called out. And they were. Joey squeezed Susie’s shoulder as the group filed out. “This place is going to make your dreams come true, Susie. I’ll make sure of it. Because your dreams are the same as mine.”
Sammy overheard their exchange. It disgusted him a little to see a manipulator like Joey working his magic on this guileless young woman, but it was nice to hear that his music had been played on the radio and was helping to make the studio a success.
Maybe I could have a notable music career, right here in Joey Drew Studios...
---
Because there was recording to do, Sammy wasn’t able to return to the song until that evening, when everyone else was filing out to head home. Normally, Sammy would grumble about having to work late, but this wasn’t even about deadlines. This was about passion. The song before him wasn’t “more of a hassle than a Bendy song would be,” it was an opportunity to write proper music again. Maybe this one would get on the radio waves, too.
A part of Sammy didn’t mind working late, honestly. The studio was so quiet in the evenings, and he could go wherever he liked and still be in privacy, or alone with Jack. And it let him use a little of his old theatre magic.
As a teenager, Sammy had played at theatres, and he was great at it. Music just seemed to come to him when he had something to set it to. And now, if he could imagine the scene that the song was meant for, he could still capture a bit of that. So he closed his eyes and imagined the cartoon playing out, letting his fingers do their thing.
Alice reflecting on the life she’d led, all of her virtues and mistakes. Beginning to ascend to heaven, only to be denied at the gates and returned to earth as a fallen angel, given no directions on what she was supposed to do. Wandering the streets and wondering if this was a punishment, or if she had some greater purpose, before deciding to merely treat it as a second chance at life.
Yes... Sammy’s fingers were dancing across the keys. He could feel what he should put into this song. He abruptly stopped playing and frantically scribbled down all he could remember of it, only vaguely aware of another person in the room.
“What’cha playin’?” a female voice asked.
“Give me a second,” Sammy replied, scribbling out the rest of his inspiration as though he’d barely heard her. “Yes, Susie? How can I help you?”
“I just wanted to tell you that your playing was amazing,” Susie cooed. She was blushing, and that made Sammy smile. Susie made everyone smile. “Anyhow, it’s after hours. Would you like to grab a drink or something?”
“I’d rather keep working,” Sammy stated. “Wait. Susie- could you tell me a little about how Alice works emotionally? I want to make sure this song is capturing her.”
“Well, sure,” Susie said, taking a seat across from Sammy before launching into a description of how Alice felt about being a fallen angel. Sammy had never seen anyone so dedicated to a character. Sammy had known that Susie loved Alice, of course- everyone knew that. But he hadn’t known the meat of it until now.
“I just think that it’s nice that we have a character that says, yeah, sometimes life sends you curve balls and all you can do is enjoy it anyhow! It’s a good message for the little girls, I think. I’ll be honest- when I came here, I was hoping it would just be a stepping stone, but now? I don’t just want Alice to make me famous. I wanna make her famous, too!”
Sammy could have laughed. “You’d really rather get famous here, in this studio dripping with rubber ink, than anywhere else?”
“Well, not anywhere else, but...”
“You’re adorable.”
Susie’s dainty features scrunched up in anger. “Don’t call me that!”
“What? I think it’s cute that you look at this place,” Sammy gestured around at the leaking pipes and stained equipment, “and think, yeah, dream job.”
“You’re adorable. And sour.” Susie jabbed.
“Hey!”
“See? You don’t like it either.”
“Touché. Anyhow- if I can ask, what are you doing here after hours?”
“I came to see you.”
“Why tonight? You’ve been working here for months.” And Sammy had seen her passing him shy, adoring glances during those months.
Susie anxiously twirled her hair. “Well... honestly I was a little too intimidated to talk to you up until I had this little success. You’re just such a good musician. I figured you had more important people to be talking to, I guess.”
Sammy could have rolled his eyes. He knew that between his musical skill, his strictness, his striking beauty, his irritability, and Joey talking up his abilities like he was some kind of God, he had a reputation for being incredibly aloof and forbidding. He couldn’t say he entirely disliked everyone thinking he was too good for them, especially since he preferred some distance from most of them, but it could feel like rejection at times. And Susie was one person he wouldn’t have minded some extra contact with.
“Well, I’m glad you took the plunge. Maybe you’ll find that I’m not as the sentient wall of spikes you expect me to be. I can’t go out with you tonight, though. Another time, maybe.”
“Okay. Well, best of luck,” she chirped. With that, she was off, leaving Sammy to his work.
Later that night, Sammy had the radio on, and he heard Susie’s voice once more, singing “Lonely Angel.” It was beautiful. He’d known that before, of course- he’d always thought she had potential in her. Even now, as he listened to her voice, he was nitpicking it for strengths, flaws, and mistakes.
Sammy wasn’t one to socialize much with his coworkers, but even he could see what a pleasant girl Susie was. She was always talking with someone. She was always happy, save for the few times Sammy had seen her in tears. And she idolized Sammy. If his path to the musical career he wanted involved Alice Angel, maybe it ought to involve Susie as well. It would be not just advantageous, but very enjoyable as well. Plus, that way he could make sure Joey wasn’t harming her any.
The next day, Sammy approached Susie and told her how he felt. “Susie, I think you have a lot of potential as a singer. I’d like to get some one-on-one time with you to work on your voice.”
Susie gave him a polite smile and a “That would be great. When?” but she looked like she was trying to keep an unprofessional burst of excitement under control.

I’m not sure if you have something planned for this already but wouldn’t it be the height of irony if Tooley got monched on by a starved Chris when he forgot to drug him? Just opens the door and whoops! He eaten!
CW: Whumper death, drunkenness, some dehumanization, blood drinking, bit of gore, vampirism, some very light catholicism
-
New York City, 1936
KING EDWARD VIII ABDICATES THRONE British Monarch to Wed American Socialite Wallis Simpson
Tooley kicks at the sodden, half-frozen newspaper stuck to his shoe, grunting with the effort it takes to dislodge it. His hands are buried deep in the pockets of his thick woolen coat, and he ignores the envious stares of others whose threadbare outfits are patched, whose gloves are little more than rags wrapped around their not-quite-frostbitten fingers.
Instead, he pulls his scarf up higher, tucks his chin beneath its knitted warmth, and finally manages to send the scrap of paper with its water-stained black-and-white image of a stern-faced soon-to-be ex-king and his Baltimore lover into the street, where it sticks in a puddle and soaks clean through.
The old-timers say a heavy rain is coming, citing their aching joints and bones. It's been a wet winter already, and the absolute last thing New York needs is more rain.
Tooley plans to be holed up in his nice warm little house for the whole of it. He's sold three paintings in a month, and he can spend the next few weeks on the next one until his hands want to drop right off his wrists without having to distract himself with petty concerns like money.
The liquor bubbles warm inside him, and even with the frigid air he's broken a sweat along his back, trickling to his waistband, almost a tickle. He stumbles a little, catches himself, coughs out a laugh as the cold air burns deep into his lungs. It can't penetrate the hazy heat of the drink, though.
Mel's always has the best whiskey, and Tooley has the green these days to pay for the very best indeed. He's spent what might be a whole month's pay - if he weren't the luckiest artist in New York - in a single night.
You might say he's made a deal with the devil.
He pulls the brim of his fedora down, shielding his brow from the bit of freezing moisture speckling his cheeks. He struggles not to giggle like a child.
"Got a bit to spare for a hungry man?" A rasping voice calls out from an alley as he passes. "Help me feed my family, sir? I'm out of work, sir! Got three little ones with hungry bellies!"
Tooley ignores him.
There are crowds like that everywhere these days, always pressing for help, for a little something more and more and more. Men out of work, men in bread lines, women with tired faces and sad children. He's had just about enough of it.
They're calling it a depression, and he finds the term apt enough, considering it seems the whole country's been tumbled into a hole and can't find its way out.
He'd take his muse to Europe and paint there if it weren't for the echoing tension that bleeds over across the sea. Every nation he's idolized for their arts is trying to posture at each other. Rattling sabers while the people sigh heavily and keep washing their laundry, like always.
Tooley was a child when the Great War tore his own family apart - losing an older half-brother to the pointless trenches, a father to the mustard gas that ate his lungs to pieces, a mother to her desperate, sharp grief at her husband and stepson's loss.
The War had rendered him alone in the world before he was even twenty, though he'd been too young to hardly understand it and it had had nothing to do with him.
Wars were for rich men to send poor men to fight in, and Tooley is hoping to have enough wealth to maybe just float right past a new one, if the rumors beginning to swirl came true and Europe is going to erupt. Surely, though, no one would let a second war as horrible as the last happen.
Surely not.
Still, even so, he can simply disappear if they try to call him up to fight. He has no one left to lose, after all. No one to fight for, no one to care for. No one but his pretty little model, all locked away, his to keep.
Tooley takes a sharp left and the streets begin to change from the harsher gray of the city proper into neighborhoods, houses crammed tightly together. It's not the best part of town - Tooley's parents weren't the wealthiest, and he doesn't live like a gentleman, he's got no need to, it's not how he thinks a proper artist should live anyway. Have to keep up the image of the nearly-starving creative genius, after all.
There are still lights in some windows, despite the late hour. Tooley isn't the only one drunk at midnight and still moving.
It's a mile or so from the start of his street to where his house is nestled between two others, close enough he could reach out his kitchen window and touch the brick of the home next door. He smiles a little. His nose aches with the cold at the tip of it, but that's nothing to worry himself over.
He's home.
It takes him four tries to unlock his front door, the key jabbing into wood and brass too far to one side or the other. He laughs, breath puffing white clouds into the air, his ears burning with the cold where his hat doesn't quite cover them.
Good thing he's not with a woman, tonight, if his aim's so bad with just his hands.
The thought makes him laugh harder, nearly a guffaw, loud enough that he's sure he's woken a neighbor or two. It's not the first time.
Finally, the key slides home and the lock clicks and Tooley moves inside. The house is chilled in the entryroom, but as he slides his coat and fedora off to leave them on the coat rack and moves into the kitchen, towards the back, he can feel the warmth slowly trickling from the ticking radiators along the walls.
He's due for a coal delivery in the next couple of days, and boy, he's going to need it with the weather the way it's been.
Tooley heads for his perfect little secret, the vampire held in the backroom, once a sort of servant's bedroom for some family that had owned the home even before his own parents did. It's his studio, now, and the place where the little vampire boy is kept.
He unlocks that door, too. A key, a deadbolt, a little sliding lock at the top for added safety.
"Here, kitty kitty kitty," He slurs, and laughs again, delighted at his own little joke.
There's a scrape and a rustle, and Tooley steps back to let the vampire boy move forward, out of the freezing unheated room - Tooley only turns the radiator on in there when he himself is working, it's not like dead things care about being warm after all - and into the kitchen proper, with its little two-person table.
The boy is looking dirty - he's due for a bath, long overdue honestly. Good things he doesn't sweat enough to stink.
His hair hangs lank in his eyes, closer to dark copper than the new-penny shine Tooley prefers. There are smudges along his cheeks, marring his perfect freckles. He's draped in a sweater patched badly where his elbows have worn holes right through, pants that are tied with a rope since Tooley sure isn't going to waste money on a belt for a corpse.
"Is, did, did you, um, did you bring me food?" The vampire boy looks up at him, eyes glinting a little in the dimness, that unsettling cat-like glow-in-the-dark effect. His little fangs flash, too. "I'm... I'm, I'm hungry, Tooley."
"I know you are, bloodsucker."
"It's, it's been, um, it's been weeks, Tooley-"
"I know, I know. Shut your trap." Tooley ruffles his hair, then pulls his hand back with a grimace as he remembers how dirty and greasy it's gotten, walking away to go to the sink and wash his hands. "We'll get t'that. I met with someone very important at th' bar tonight, and first things first, you and I are going to celebrate."
The boy moves slowly, staying half-crouched - he's been hit before, when Tooley didn't want him to stand all the way up. He settles himself against the wall, head tilted to the side. His cheekbones cut sharp angles in his face, edging down to his narrow chin.
Those big green eyes follow Tooley everywhere he goes.
"Celebrate what?" He asks, and Tooley wonders just how old the ridiculous little thing is. He'd said early aughts, hadn't he, on when he was turned? So he'd be, what, in his forties really?
Funny.
Was he locked up during the Great War?
He's still a pretty teenager, but he's probably closing in on fifty. Tooley's twenty-some years younger and looks infinitely older, in his own estimation.
Tooley should look into vampirism, seems an excellent way to hold onto your looks, doesn't it? He wonders if the boy knows how to turn him. They could make beautiful work forever...
Hm.
Something to ruminate over when he's hungover in the morning.
"New commission. I'm taking a few weeks off, give us both a break, but I've got the basic details. I'll pick up a broad, get her all set up for modeling, we'll make us a mint, sweetheart." He moves to the counter, picking up the half-full bottle of gin he keeps there, taking a swig and grimacing, coughing. There's a rattle in his lungs these days he doesn't like much.
"You'll, you'll kill her?" The vampire watches him. He looks hungry, with all those sharp lines emphasized, as though he were a painting himself still in progress, with the outline still written in graphite showing through the colors. He's pale, painted in wash, not yet turned to vivid velvet intensity with oils.
"'Course. You think any of my models would stay alive anywhere near you?" He laughs at the very idea, missing the vampire's little flinch as he turns away. He pulls a loaf of bread from the breadbox, already starting to stale but that's all right, he's going to toast it over the stove anyway. The world swims around him from the liquor, and he catches the counter with one hand to keep himself upright.
The feeling brings another laugh out of him.
The little vampire smiles faintly in echo of it. He has to work to get the stove to gas, narrowing his eyes as it struggles, sputters, before finally a little flame flares up. Just enough to give off a little heat for the toast.
"Fuck. Drank too much. Or not enough." He laughs again, and pulls a knife from the knifeblock, the sharp serrated thin blade best for slicing through the heavy sourdough he buys from a woman down the block. Bit of toast, pat of salted butter, that'll get him through to morning when he can head down for eggs and bacon at Paulie's diner.
Maybe he'll even buy some extra for the hungry men who hound around the doors. He can be a philanthropist.
As he slices, the knife slips off the stale, hard crust and cuts right through the back of his hand, a long line immediately welling with bright red blood. He groans, irritated, and sets the knife down, turning to run cold water over it as the pain flares bright, but slightly muted from his drunkenness.
There's a rustle behind him, and Tooley's mind only belatedly begins to allow alarm to trickle through the warm fuzz of the gin and whiskey. He slowly turns around.
Where the vampire boy had been curled against the wall, a bundle of skinny bones and too-big clothes, there's... nothing.
Tooley glances to one side and sees the boy crouched on the floor by the edge of the lower cabinets, his hands pressed into the ground. He moved five feet in less than a second.
His eyes are flared, wide and with pupils burying the iris in black. He clicks, softly, tongue against teeth in an inhuman way.
Click-click-click-click.
click-click-click.
How'd he move so fast?
"Shit," Tooley whispers. "When's the last time I fed you?"
The vampire doesn't answer, only stares, unblinking, muscles tensing and relaxing, tensing and relaxing. He clicks again.
His lips pull back from his teeth and those fangs that seem so cute and little on every other day suddenly look long, like daggers, dripping a shimmering venom to the ground.
Tooley tries not to blink, too, but his eyes dry and dry and dry and eventually he can't help it. His eyes close, a fraction of a second, and flare open right away.
Not fast enough.
The vampire leaps and Tooley grunts at the impact of the small bony body against his own, his lower back smacking into the line of the counter with a flash of pain. The bread and knife both clatter to the ground.
Panic comes, but it doesn't help. He's still groping to get at another knife when the vampire's fingernails dig into his scalp, grip into his hair and jerk his head to the side to bare his throat.
"Hungry," The vampire boy hisses. "Hungry, Tooley. Hungry."
"I-I know, just, just don't blow your wig, gimmee a minute, I can get you something, just hold on-" Tooley's voice is thin from the harsh angle his neck is being held at, and he swallows, seeing in a bleary haze the way the vampire's huge eyes are focused on the movement of his adam's apple, the bob of his throat.
Can he see the blood pulsing there?
He puts his hands up against the vampire's chest to try and push him off, but it's like pushing against rock. He thinks about painting the vampire as a kind of young Prometheus for a dandy from Boston, tied naked to a rock to be pecked at by eagles, and wonders if the mythological man ever tried to push the rock itself, and if it failed as miserably for him as it does for Tooley now.
"There's blood in the shed out back, just let me go and I'll grab it for you." He pitches his voice soothing and slightly patronizing, like speaking to a whining dog. "Okay, kitten? Just two minutes and you'll be fed, right as rain."
The vampire pauses, hesitates, and Tooley feels his hands working at Tooley's hair and one shoulder, like a cat kneading into your lap before they settle. His little stray. His breathing starts to ease, his heart to slow down, the first rush of panic subsiding.
The world still spins a little, but the rush of adrenaline is settling things into something more solid, wiping away the liquor.
"I'll put you back in your room and go get it for you, it's right outside, good and cold," Tooley coos, and realizes too late it isn't what he should have said.
"There's blood right here, and and and, and, and it's living," The vampire boy says, eyes wide and inhuman, and he's absolutely gorgeous. "Your, your, yours is hot."
Tooley would paint him like this, all feral instinct overwriting the living corpse of an anonymous Irish immigrant who died dozens of years ago. A metaphor, maybe, for the way some of the children who come here lose all their European culture and get boorishly American, and-
The vampire bites down, and all thoughts of art and culture flee from Tooley's mind.
The liquor holds off the pain so long the venom hits before he even feels the way those sharp teeth have breached his skin. He goes limp, dropping in a heap to the floor. He thinks he hits his head on the loaf of bread before it knocks into the floor.
They feel about the same level of hardness.
The knife is right next to his head, lying there, shining in the yellowed lamplight, with its carved wooden handle.
All he has to do is move his hand a few inches to reach it.
Just a few inches.
He tries, desperately, to tell his fingers where to go.
The vampire sucks hard at the wound in his neck, pulling blood from his veins like a man drinking an egg cream after a long hot day's work, and Tooley groans. He can feel the press and pull without the pain, and it's the strangest thing he's ever felt. Stranger than those he's gone to bed with.
The venom makes his limbs feel like stones, weighed down to motionless. He struggles even to swallow saliva, to take a deep breath. His heart never races again with panic. He isn't able to feel it any longer.
Those sharp little fingernails dig hard into his shoulders, the weight of the vampire settled on him, straddling him. A little flirty thought - at least buy me dinner first - makes its way across his mind, barely coherent, slow as molasses.
The vampire starts up his soft rumble, the vibration filtering in through into Tooley's body. It seems like it makes him feel even more frozen, heavy as the ocean and weightless at once.
His eyes are on the ceiling, and he realizes how long it's been since anyone cleaned the corners where cobwebs have grown and grown. They need swept away.
Funny how he never noticed before. Too busy with his art.
There's a moment where Tooley is surprised to look down at himself, as if he's floating somewhere near the ceiling staring down at his own open eyes. When he needed not to blink, he couldn't stop himself, but now the body he is looking at just stares and stares and stares, unseeing, unblinking, unbreathing-
Oh.
As soon as the realization hits, Tooley's awareness of himself as a body he can observe is gone.
There is darkness, and then a point of terrible final light. He feels the grasping of bloodied hands.
And he's gone.
The vampire drinks until the blood stops pumping, until the heart beneath his kneading hand is still. Then a rough tongue laps at the wounds, finding the last few droplets there that still sing with life.
The vampire pulls back, skin flush with life, no longer white as snow. His freckles stand out, scattered like constellations of stars over his skin. The dead man beneath him has all the paleness he had before, they are switched, swapped death for life.
He wipes the blood from around his mouth and looks slowly upwards, breathing in deep gulps he doesn't need but which feel so, so good.
He moves to the stove, to turn it off, but he doesn't quite turn it off all the way. An odd smell fills his nose and the vampire's nostrils wrinkle, but he doesn't know what the scent is, and he simply pulls Tooley's coat on before he leaves, door unlocked.
A few minutes later, a man with his hands over a barrel fire looks up to see a redheaded teenager in a woolen coat far too large for him move under a streetlamp, pausing to look up at it as if surprised by how bright its light is.
He blinks, and the man squints.
The young man's mouth is open, as if scenting the air by letting it roll over his tongue. Before the man can quite understand what he is looking at, the boy's mouth closes and he turns to look at the man. As his eyes shift from being lit by the lamp to draped in shadow, though...
They glow.
"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph," The man whispers, crossing himself hurriedly. "Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, b-be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil-"
The boy looks right at him, head tilted. The flames of the barrel flicker, hissing a little when raindrops start to fall. His lips pull back from his teeth and there are an animal's fangs there, plain as day.
The man feels pure horror at the sight of a demon walking free and unfettered in New York City. He grabs at the cross he wears around his neck and holds it out, his voice trembling. "May G-God... rebuke him, we humbly pray-"
"I, I, I hope that works for you," The boy says, and his voice is soft, and there's almost a lilt of the old country there that the man recognizes, not quite his own but not far off. "It never d-did for, um, for me. Don't worry. I'm... I'm full. You're, you're, you're in no danger from me. When, when, when, when... when did you come here? To this place?"
The man swallows around a lump in his throat, and yet he finds himself compelled to answer honestly. "Two years past, give or take. Came with m'wife and baby girl."
"From where?"
"... Kerry," He says, against his will. He can't seem to hold back the words. "And my wife grew up in County Cork."
The boy smiles, and his horrid teeth disappear when his lips press together. He looks for all the world like any other young man, a bit skinny perhaps and in need of a good meal or three, but no danger to anyone.
But the man has seen the demon that he is, and he finds himself grateful for the fire between them and the cross still in his hand, the shield of St. Michael and the cloak of Christ Himself.
"My, my, my, my parents were from County Cork," The demon boy says, lightly. His lilt is slightly stronger. "Wonder if we're cousins, your your wife and I. Maybe so. Stay home, um, after dark. Don't, don't, don't work when the sun is, um, is down."
The boy turns and walks away.
The man realizes with a start that in the midst of a chilly December night, the boy's feet are utterly bare. He steps over ice like he could walk on water.
There was blood smeared on the back of his coat.
The man flinches as he hears a sudden boom, close enough that he feels it in his chest as well as hearing the sound. A moment later a woman runs by shouting that a house has caught flame, to call for help.
The man looks back at the way the boy went.
He's gone.

Capturing a Dream
Chapter 11 – That Keeps Out the Danger
Chapter 1 Chapter 10
“How are we supposed to eat? We’re going to starve. You’re leaving us to starve. To wither away into nothingness.” Wally collapsed dramatically onto the kitchen island.
“Oh my God, drama queen. You don’t even live here. Go home and eat.” Chimera threw a kitchen towel in his face. He grabbed the towel as it hit him and fell back off of the barstool in an exaggerated drop, crying out as he fell.
“Yeah, Wally. You don’t even go here,” Robin grinned reaching to grab the cupcake left unguarded on his plate. He grumbled when Wally was able to get back up, get onto the barstool, and swipe it back again before he could take a bite. Chimera giggled at the reference until Robin turned his mischievous grin on her. Her giggles quickly quieted and her expression turned apprehensive. “And we don’t want to interrupt Chi’s date.”
Chimera rolled her eyes. Robin and Wally had been teasing her relentlessly since they found out she was going to be out of the Cave for the weekend and wouldn’t give them any details. They made the completely logical leap to claiming it was a date with Roy. She honestly wasn’t sure if it was intended to annoy her or Conner more, or more likely both. She was positive Robin’s ultimate goal in life was to antagonize every member of the Team and the Justice League with one comment, like the annoying, teenage menace he was. Honestly, she liked seeing it; a glimpse of normalcy in his life. But, that didn’t mean she appreciated it when it was turned on her.
“Yeah, you sure you won’t tell us where you two are going?” Wally teased, his words obscured by the bite of cupcake still in his mouth. “Roy won’t tell us anything.”
Chimera gave him a flat look. “Roy’s in India this week.”
“Ah, so that’s where you’re going. Guess portals have their advantages,” Wally snickered, waggling his eyebrows at her.
“Funny how she knew exactly what his plans were for this weekend, don’t you think, Conner,” Robin commented in exaggerated innocence, laying his arm on Conner’s shoulder.
Chimera’s mouth dropped, scandalized by the accusation. “You’re the one that told me.”
“I have no recollection of that conversation…” he answered seriously. He looked at the floor and shook his head, his hand stroking his chin in thought. “Actually, I do.” The grin he shot her was nothing short of terrifying. He leaned across the island to get in her face. “You asked me where Roy was going to be. You were very insistent,” he grinned, pushing into her face.
“I hate you. And if I had to ask you, that means I didn’t ask him, dork,” she pointed out, shoving Robin’s head away.
“Hey!” He cried out. “My hair!” He automatically reached up to fix his hair.
Chimera raised an eyebrow at him, a feral grin spreading across her face. “Oh no. No, no, no. Chi…” he warned, moving off the chair and backing slowly away from her. Once he got to the door, he took off running at full speed. Conner and Wally watched as Robin jumped the railing to drop down to the floor below. Chimera raced after him, jumping the railing with just as much grace as Robin. They could just hear their footsteps as they ran and accidentally collided with different objects.
“Really hope they don’t accidentally destroy anything,” Conner observed casually, swiping his own cupcake and taking a bite, “…again.” He smiled at the sound of Chimera and Robin’s laughter echoing off the walls.
“If they do, it won’t be accidental,” Wally noted as he stuffed his fourth cupcake in his mouth, glaring at Conner for taking one of the cupcakes Chimera had made for everyone. He turned sharply back toward where the two had run off to when they heard a loud yelp and even louder cackle. He shook his head and leaned back, waiting for Robin’s walk of shame back into the kitchen. He never outraced Chimera. She always caught him. He wasn’t sure why Robin even tried instead of just accepting his fate.
It only took a minute for Robin to slope back into the room and slouch back into his chair, pouting the entire way. He tried to subtly fix his now extremely ruffled hair. Chimera was only a few steps behind him, trying incredibly unsuccessfully to hold in her giggles.
“I hope your date sucks,” Robin grumbled into the floor.
“Not a date,” she singsonged and booped him on the nose.
“Hope Roy feels that way too,” Wally smirked, but his eyes were on Conner with an amused gleam at his scowl. Conner took a deep cleansing breath. He knew they were just teasing, but he really didn’t appreciate the joke.
Chimera pulled at Robin’s hoodie pocket, looking in it with a furrowed brow. “What are you doing?” Robin demanded, slapping her hands away.
“I’m looking for the brain call you two share. Someone has to have it,” she shrugged. “I figured it was your turn with it today.”
“I have it today, thank you very much!” Wally objected around the mouthful of his fifth cupcake.
Chimera stared at him blankly for a few seconds. Robin rolled his eyes and slumped against the island. “Idiot.”
Chimera shook her head. “I can’t believe they’re letting you guys go out unchaperoned,” she muttered
Robin scoffed. “I’m from Gotham. And I do this,” he motioned around them. “I can take care of myself.”
“I’m from Gotham,” Chimera mocked him in a poor imitation of his voice. “Being from Gotham doesn’t automatically give you better judgement than people from other places.”
Robin glowered at her, but before he could retort she continued in a softer tone. “I know you can take care of yourself and you’re responsible… on missions. But this isn’t a mission and you’re a kid. You should get to be one, which means making stupid decisions that adults try to talk you out of and they,” she motioned toward Wally and Conner, “don’t count. They’re more childish than you.”
“Hey,” Wally objected again. He narrowed his eyes at her. “Roy’s never going to kiss you if you keep being so mean.”
Chimera rolled her eyes. “I’m meeting my best friends.”
“Wow, already introducing him to the family. You and Roy are really moving quickly,” Robin quipped.
Chimera groaned and looked to the ceiling for patience. “You are such a little dick.”
Robin froze momentarily. Conner looked down to hide his grin, but there was no hiding his chuckles. Wally, however, was laughing so hard he was bent over holding his stomach, his body shaking with laughter so violently, he almost fell off his chair. Chimera gave him a concerned look, but Robin glared at him. After a few minutes of unbroken laughter, he finally tamed his laughter enough to pat Robin on the head and gasp out, “You really are… such a little Dick.” Robin lunged for him but he sped out of his reach before he could make contact.
Conner shook his head and focused back on Chimera. “Can you say where you guys are going? Or will that compromise your identity?”
Chimera cocked her head to the side in thought before quickly shaking her head. “I don’t think so. We’re going to Metropolis. My best friend wants a tour of the Daily Planet… and to try to meet Clark Kent or Lois Lane.”
Wally perked up. “You don’t say.”
Chimera grimaced. “Yeah. She’s a huge fan of them. She desperately wants to meet them.”
The boys started laughing at her. Robin finally spoke up with a devilish grin. “You know, you could make that happen.”
Chimera threw her arms out in defeat. “I know! But not without compromising my identity. And even if I could, how would that even work? Hey Supes, totally unrelated to me or my identity in any way, could you meet with this person I absolutely do not know on a very personal level for many years? Ugh. This is going to be awkward as hell. I’m going to be on his home turf… where he works… his territory. I’m going to have to pretend I don’t know him and didn’t go all Electro on him.”
Conner smiled at her catastrophizing. “He likes you. You remember that, right? And at the time, he was the bad guy so, if anything, you went all Storm on him.” He chuckled at the deadpan look she gave him. “If it makes you feel better, he’s off-world today and tomorrow.”
Chimera perked up with a hopeful grin. “Really?” Conner nodded. She bounced on her toes in excitement.
The action was so adorable on her Conner couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled up. “Yes,” he reassured her.
Her smile suddenly turned into a wary look. “Are you sure? How do you know?”
Conner moved closer and rested his hands on her shoulders. “I talked to him. We’re trying to make time to hang out so we can get closer. So incredibly awkward but… anyway. He said he couldn’t do anything this weekend because he’ll be off-world.”
She gave him a sympathetic smile and moved under his arms to give him a hug. She lessened the pressure and rested her head on his chest, keeping her arms around him. He returned the gesture, wrapping his arms around her as well. “I’m glad to hear that. Not the he’s not here part, the he’s trying part… well, actually, both parts. I’m not going to lie. I’m really happy he won’t be there when I am. But I’m sad you guys can’t hang out this weekend.”
Conner smiled into her hair. “It’s okay. There’ll be other weekends. At least I know he isn’t trying to avoid me this time. It just means we get to have a boy’s weekend instead.” His expression turned concerned and he pulled back just enough to try to look her in the eyes. “Are you sure you’re going to be okay though? Last time you hung out with your friends it… you didn’t exactly come home happy.”
She smiled up at him. “Yeah. I’ll be fine. I’m excited. It’s going to be a lot of fun.” She gave him an extra squeeze before starting to pull away. “I won’t be in P… home,” she quickly corrected herself, “this time, so it should be good.”
Conner pulled her back into a tight hug. “Okay, well… if you need us, I’m only one call away… or you know just show up wherever we are,” he whispered.
She craned her neck so she could rest her chin on his chest and look at him with a smile. “Portals have their advantages.”
“You two are disgusting! Get a room,” Wally groaned dramatically. He threw the towel Chimera had thrown at him earlier back at her. Chimera squeaked and jumped away from Conner, while Conner caught it before it could reach her. “You’re going to make Roy jealous if you keep it up.” Conner sent Wally a vicious glare that Wally completely ignored.
“Right. On that note…” She reached down for her bag but rolled her eyes at Robin when she saw he’d already grabbed it. “I’m stronger than you. You know that, right?”
“Yeah, don’t care,” Robin shrugged. “Wouldn’t want to disappoint Agent A with bad manners.”
She snorted and shook her head. “Sounds incredibly sexist, but whatever. Unless you’re planning on doing the same for them,” she motioned to Conner and Wally. Robin furrowed his brow at her, but kept his grip on her bag. “Then it isn’t manners, it’s sexism.”
He narrowed his eyes at her. “I’m going to tell A you said that.”
“Go ahead, I’ll own it,” she shrugged. “And he’ll agree with me.” She turned toward Wally and Conner with a small wave. “Okay, you guys have fun. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
Conner scoffed. “That doesn’t narrow it down much.” He grinned at her when she let out an offended scoff.
“Don’t worry, we won’t accidentally destroy anything. Can you say the same?” Wally grinned.
“I don’t destroy everything I touch,” she groused, “just almost everything,” she muttered the last bit to the floor with a frown. She quickly recovered and looked back up at him with an exaggerated smile. “But, with the three of you going out unsupervised, I highly doubt something isn’t going to end up destroyed intentionally.” She narrowed her eyes challengingly at Wally. “In fact, I bet my trip is less destructive than yours.”
Wally sat up and grinned back at her. “Oh, you’re on. Two dozen cupcakes every day for a week if I win. My choice of flavors.”
“And no eating any food I make for a week if I win,” she smirked back at him.
“You know, there’s more than just you two in on this bet,” Conner reminded them.
“Oh? And what is it you want from Chimera when we win?” Robin asked with a devious smirk.
Conner glared darkly at him, but his cheeks turned a bright red. “I get to choose what we watch for a week.”
Chimera groaned and dropped her head. “Nooooo.”
“Backing out?” he grinned, raising a challenging eyebrow and moving closer to tower over her.
“Never,” she scoffed. “Just trying to imagine a full week of exclusively Conner-chosen programming.” She pretended to shudder. “The horror.”
He grinned down at her and took a step closer again until he was almost chest to chest with her. “Better not lose then.”
Chimera matched his grin and straightened up. “Oh I don’t intend to. There’s no way you guys will be able to stop yourselves from getting involved in any and every drama you walk in on. By the way, getting into a fight counts, even if you don’t destroy any property.”
The moment was broken when Robin spoke up. “I want chocolate macarons.”
Chimera shook her head and gave a sweet smile to Conner as she made her way to the door. She bumped Robin’s shoulder as she passed him. “Dream on, Bird Boy.”
Wally watched her leave the room with Robin and turned to Conner. “Whatever happens this weekend, we absolutely cannot allow anything to get destroyed because of us. Agreed?”
Conner nodded. “Agreed.”
Robin watched Chimera closely as they walked. She was quieter than usual. Normally she’d still be trash talking with him about the bet. She was extremely competitive and her personality flourished when there was a challenge. But now, she had a carefully crafted neutral expression on her face that he would have absolutely bought if he didn’t know her better. “You sure you’re okay?” he asked.
She smiled at him. A fake smile that he didn’t buy for a second. “Of course. You just heard me tell Conner, it’ll be fine.” She looked back forward quickly.
“Are you upset about us teasing you about Roy?”
She huffed out a laugh. “No. It’s fine. Honestly, less teasing than my friends back home would do. I’m tough. I can take it.”
Robin looked back toward the kitchen. “I don’t know that Conner feels the same way,” he said carefully.
Chimera eyed him suspiciously. “Robin…” She pursed her lips and took a breath. “Then maybe you should stop doing it around him.”
“Maybe you should put him out of his misery, and yours,” Robin snapped back a bit harsher than he meant.
“Robin, you know I can’t,” she shook her head and looked down.
“I just want to… you two just seem so… are you sure?” he tried again.
“Robin…” she repeated, but her voice was considerably sadder this time. She pursed her lips and looked back forlornly toward where Conner and Wally were waiting for Robin. She let out a deep sigh that became a boom sound and expanded her fingers out, miming an explosion. “Yeah, I’m sure.”
“Does it really matter if you’re officially together or not when things like that,” he motioned toward the kitchen, “happen so often? You guys are… you’re perfect for each other. You make each other happy. I can’t believe you’re not meant to be together.”
“Yes, it does,” she answered sharply. “It matters. That’s what I’ve learned. That’s what the universe taught me.”
He took a deep breath to prepare himself for this. He’d been working on what to say for a few weeks. Just the right way to phrase it so it hit right, so she thought it was a matter of helping him, not herself. Because that was her weakness, if you could call it that; protecting the people she loved, whatever the cost to her. “I just… the result of being a hero can’t be to be miserable. I need to believe that you can still be happy, that I can be happy, but between you and Batman...”
“Of course you can be happy,” she jumped in instantly, just as Robin had been hoping she would. “You and Zatanna are happy now. And even if that doesn’t last, you know you still can be. And Batman…” she grimaced unsure how to sell a happy Batman. “Wally! He and Artemis are adorable.”
“Oh come on. Wally’s going to mess that up, you know him,” Robin scoffed.
Chimera rolled her eyes. “And Artemis will knock him back into shape. You know her. No, I think they’re in it for the long haul. ‘Til death do them part.”
Robin shook his head. He needed to focus it back to her and him. “I need to know that someone like you gets to be happy too, or what’s the point? We’re constantly in terrible situations. We constantly see miserable things. That’s a part of our lives… but we can still be happy… right?” He was laying it on thick. He knew he was laying it on thick and he knew that if anyone else was doing this other than him, Chimera would have picked up on it all of two seconds into the conversation. But he needed to get to her, to make her stop and think. And if that meant manipulating her into it, he’d do it… again. But she was like a sister to him. She was family. And when it’s family, it isn’t manipulating, it’s meddling. And meddling is okay. Meddling is the way family show they love each other.
“Being in terrible situations doesn’t mean your personal life has to be too. But, it’s different for me, Robin. Things… things get destroyed when I fall in love; buildings, monuments, countries, moons, planets… The universe made sure I understood my lesson well. But you!” She gave him a bright smile and set her hands on his shoulders. “You have a heart so big. It could....”
Robin gaped at her. “You know he was just teasing right?” he interrupted before she could finish her sentence. “About you destroying stuff everywhere you go. Chi, you… you don’t… Chi, that isn’t anywhere near the truth. Terrible things happened, but that isn’t your fault. That’s the situations you were forced into. It isn’t you!”
Chimera nodded at him and gave him an utterly unconvincing smile. “Yeah. I know.” She gave him a quick hug and pulled away almost as quickly. “You guys have fun, okay? And if you need anything, just give me a call, okay?” She ruffled his hair again before punching her destination into the Zeta tube interface. “I’ll get notified even if I’m not transformed.”
“Chi,” Robin started again, but she was already standing in the Zeta tube platform. There wasn’t enough time to finish that conversation, so instead he answered with, “yeah, okay. I will.” He continued to stare at the Zeta tube for a few seconds before making his way back to the kitchen.
“Did you tell her?” Conner asked as soon as Robin made it back to the kitchen.
Robin shook his head, still looking back toward the Zeta tube. Conner nodded at his response. “That’s probably for the best. She'd freak out if she knew. She’d be looking over her shoulder the entire time.”
“Yeah, what are the odds we'd run into them anyway?” Wally grinned. “Now come on! We need to get going too. We just need to make sure we go to the Metropolis entrance she didn’t use.”
“Right,” Conner nodded and started walking to the Zeta tubes. “You got our bags, right Robin?”

“And just twenty minutes ago, I was so happy Superman isn’t in town this weekend,” Marinette sighed and banged her head against the wall she was leaning against.
“He’s what!” Alya whisper yelled. Adrien and Nino shushed her while Chloe scoffed at her. “Go ahead and announce our presence, why don’t you?” Nino put his hand on Alya’s shoulder to keep her from pouncing on Chloe.
Marinette tried to tune them out as she assessed the scene in front of her. There were at least three figures on their floor, but there had been at least four more that had taken any people they saw back down to the toy store’s main floor with the rest of the hostages and she spotted a different three coming up as the others were going down. That was ten, but they had no way to know how many were in the store. The marionette looking villains were holding everyone they caught in an area that was out of their line of sight.
“Don’t know if the Bat is covering for him, but he is off-world. We are likely on our own,” Marinette whispered distractedly. “Trixx, can you peek at the main area and see how many captors you see and estimate how many victims there are.” Trixx nodded in understanding and phased through the floor.
“Oh well that’s just brilliant, isn’t it,” Chloe groused. “This was your idea, Agreste. I wanted to go to a spa, but noooo. We had to visit the giant toy store. ‘It’ll be such a fun end to the visit,’” she groused in a poor imitation of his voice. “And now we’re in the middle of yet another attack, without magic protection. And there’s no miracle cure for this. If anything happens, just know, I blame you.”
“You’re welcome to hide, you know,” Adrien pointed out quietly.
“No, I’m going to help. I’m just going to complain the entire time,” Chloe groused again.
“So, no different than usual,” Nino nodded, keeping his eyes on the situation in front of him.
Chloe glared at him, but before she could retort Trixx popped back up. “I counted nine doll-looking guys downstairs, Guardian. And at least twenty-five people being held by them,” Trixx reported quietly.
Marinette nodded, silently processing all the information she had. “Got a plan?” Adrien asked barely above a whisper, keeping his eyes on the main aisle.
Marinette ignored him, running scenarios through her head. “They’re moving strangely. Their movements are stunted. Either they’re not human or someone else is controlling them.”
“Or both,” Adrien added quietly.
“Or both,” Marinette agreed. “What do you think the odds are that they are… like robotic marionettes?”
Nino nodded along with her train of thought. “I’d say high. They all walk too oddly to be human and there’s too many to each be remote controlled, so robot seems most likely.”
Marinette gave a single nod. Her face morphed into a determined look, ready to go into battle. “We can use that against them.”
“Suit up?” Alya asked.
Marinette’s body tensed at the thought. Finally after a few seconds, she took a deep breath and let it out. “Not unless necessary. There’s an awful lot of cameras around here and I don’t have extra miraculous for you guys. We’re going to have to figure out a way to lure some away from the main group without the others noticing anything. Chloe, think you can work something out?” She stared at the stairway as she spoke.
“Can I get someone’s complete attention and manipulate them into doing what I want? Are you seriously asking me that?” she scoffed.
Marinette rolled her eyes. “Well then get on it. It would help if we could find something to fight with.”
Alya cleared her throat lightly. “Anyone feel like channeling Harley Quinn?” she asked with a smirk, twirling a bat in her hands.
“Yes!” Adrien whisper yelled.
“Fine, but I’m not dying my hair though or doing the pigtails,” Chloe grunted.
<><><><><>
Marinette had always had an appreciation for stuffed cats. She’d had one on her bed for years before she became Ladybug and after she did, she had an affinity for Chat Noir themed stuffies. She still had one on her bed in the Cave. But she can honestly say she has never been as thankful for them as she was right now.
She rolled off the large stuffed cat she had landed on when she tackled the marionette doll, causing both of them to fall over the railing. Her smartest move? No. But it was trying to drag an unconscious Chloe away. She had to stop it and maybe she had some anger issues lately resulting from violently repressing any slightly negative emotions for years, a fact which she was not willing to admit to anyone else currently.
“I’m counting that for me as a save,” Adrien whisper yelled down to her.
“It’s pink,” she called back. She raised her hand as she spoke, narrowing her eyes toward Adrien. She grabbed the bat Nino threw to her in one seeming effortless motion without taking her eyes off of Adrien. She used the momentum from the catch to smoothly swing the bat back up, connecting to the marionette robot’s head. She didn’t knock it completely off, but she managed to sever enough wires and connections in the neck to make it collapse on the floor. “… that makes it count as mine,” she finished.
“Bullshit,” Adrien pouted.
Marinette smirked at him quickly before her face turned serious. “How many are left?”
“I think they’re all gone, at least the ones in here,” a voice answered.
Marinette’s head snapped to the familiar voice. “Con… can I assume you took care of a few of them as well?” she winced internally at the extremely awkward transition to cover her gap.
“We got four of them,” Robin confirmed, coming up next to Conner. Conner kept his focus on Marinette. There was something incredibly familiar in her eyes, but he couldn’t place it, but whatever it was, he was having a hard time looking away.
Marinette nodded. “We got six, I think.” She turned up toward the second level. “That sound right?”
Nino nodded. “We each got one and that one makes two for you.”
Marinette nodded in understanding and started reviewing what she knew. “That’s ten. There were at least twelve. Are you sure…”
“That’s only five,” Wally interrupted her looking from her friends to her.
Marinette looked back up to her friends and realized the confusion. “No, we have another friend. She got knocked out.”
“Where?” Adrien asked.
Marinette gave him a confused look. “There?”
“What?” Nino asked, coming up next to him.
“There. It knocked her out right before I tackled it. That’s why I did it. She was right next to where I went over,” Marinette explained slowly.
“She’s not up here, M,” Alya said.
“Son of a…” Adrien growled, taking off to look for her. The rest followed suit, running down different aisles to find Chloe. Marinette ran up the stairs two at a time to help look.
“Who are we looking for?” Wally asked. “I mean what does she look like?”
“Blonde, blue eyes, yellow shirt, pissed off scowl,” Marinette answered over her shoulders, feeling completely confident he would use his powers to search for her. Her suspicion was confirmed when she felt two rushes of air at her side. She strained her ears and was just barely able to hear him tell Robin that he didn’t find anyone like that. She mentally cursed and started trying to figure out a plan before she even reached the top of the stairs.
“I didn’t find her,” Adrien announced, walking back toward them.
“Me either,” Alya and Nino chorused coming from their sections of the store.
“Damn it. Are you sure there aren’t any more of those robot things in here?” Marinette asked the Team.
Wally nodded. “We’re positive.”
Marinette nodded and started moving toward the far wall. “Did any of you see an exit up here?”
“Yeah, over there,” Wally motioned toward a back corner.
“You think she was taken?” Conner asked.
Marinette nodded moving quickly toward the exit. “She got knocked out. Even if she’d woken up, she’d be too weak to leave on her own, especially without notifying one of us. She knows the protocols.”
“You guys have protocols for going after villains?” Robin asked skeptically.
Alya scoffed at him. “You don’t?”
Robin blinked at her a few times. “I’m from Gotham, of course I have protocols for it.”
“You guys should stay and talk to the police. We’ll look for your friend,” Wally promised, giving the other Team members a look of understanding. Conner and Robin nodded in agreement.
“We’ll go with you,” Marinette stated with finality.
“No, we got it,” Conner stated in the same tone.
She cocked an eyebrow at him. “Okay, we’ll go separate.” She shrugged at him. She turned back to Nino and Alya. “Can you listen to the police gossip and do some research, see if you can figure out who might be behind it and let us know along with anything else you find.”
“Will do, L… Dudette,” Nino stuttered. He grimaced internally at the almost slip up. “We’ll talk to the police while you go get our girl.”
With her attention on Nino, she missed the Team slipping out the door, though Adrien watched them with a curious look. Marinette turned to Adrien. “You don’t have to come with us… if you’d rather stay with Alya and Nino.”
Adrien shook his head and gave her a supportive smile. “I’m with you, ‘til the end of the line.”
Marinette gave him a flat look. “You realize the guy that said that almost died, got his mind wiped and turned into a super assassin, killed Tony Stark’s parents, and tried to kill the person he said it to. Maybe not the bar to go for.”
Adrien shrugged and let out a noncommittal grunt. “Worked out in the end. I have complete faith in you. I always have.” He gave her a meaningful look. She gave him a guilty look that he couldn’t allow to continue. “You want to tell me about…” he motioned to the door where the Team had escaped through, changing the focus of the conversation away from their past and onto her present.
Marinette held her finger up for him to wait and typed out a text she didn’t send. ‘I’m not allowed to say.’ His eyes widened and he motioned toward the door with his head. He mouthed ‘really?’ She nodded in confirmation.
“What the hell… Are you sure this is a good idea?” Adrien gave her a dubious look.
She smiled at him. “I’m not sure, but I’m not going to not get Chloe. Can you imagine the fallout from that? Leaving her rescue to someone else?”
Adrien grimaced. “Valid.”
“And I really want to. I mean I’m,” she motioned to herself, “and they’re,” she motioned toward the door they had gone through. “I’ve never gotten to… they’ve never… I don’t know if this will happen again.”
Adrien nodded and gave her an understanding look. “Yeah, I get that. Okay. Let’s do this.”
She gave him a wide excited grin, and started bouncing on her toes. “Yay!” She focused back on her phone and started tapping rapidly.
“You got her?” he asked coming up next to her to look at her screen.
“Just a second.” She tapped her screen a few more times. “Got her,” she said tilting her phone to show Adrien.
Adrien nodded and pulled his phone out. He pulled up his messaging app and followed her example, typing a text he didn’t send. ‘You let Batman know?’
Marinette smiled and nodded as she typed a response. ‘Already sent him her phone’s info and who’s looking for her… as civilians. Wish was a video call. Know he would have smirked.’
They pushed through the exit, almost running into the Team, who were talking in hushed tones. Robin tucked his phone in his back pocket.
“I told you before, we got this,” Conner insisted. “The way you took care of that robot before was impressive, but this is likely to get a lot more dangerous. We can handle it.”
Marinette cocked her head to the side, opening her eyes wide in exaggerated innocence. “Thank you, but… then it’s dangerous for you too, isn’t it?” She looked at Robin and Wally and back to him. “I mean we’re all in the same boat here, right? Experience wise?” She ignored the coughing fit Adrien faked to cover up his laughter.
Robin spoke up, “I’m from Gotham. We’re used to villains kidnapping people. We know how to handle it.”
Adrien raised an eyebrow and shared a look with Marinette. “And we’re from Paris,” he intoned. “It was a lifestyle for a few years there.”
Marinette quirked her lip to the side in an amused smirk at the boys’ confused stares. “Look, it’s our friend who got kidnapped and it’s our drama you’ve walked in on. We’re going. If you guys are so insistent on getting involved with our drama, we won’t stop you.” Robin opened his mouth to say something, but before he could get it out, Marinette continued. “So Gotham, try to keep up, because we’re able to track her,” she held up her phone which showed a map with a dot moving on it. “…so unless you have a bloodhound in that hoodie pocket, we’re leading the way.” She ruffled his hair as she passed him to get to the stairs. Was she being a terrible older sister? No. She was being an amazing older sister, pushing all his buttons. Isn’t that how all families showed love? And the best part was he didn’t know to get her back for it. Free harassment. What kind of sister would she be if she passed that up?
Robin glared at her and Conner didn’t look much happier, likely upset because it meant they wouldn’t get to use their superpowers, but still followed her down the stairs. She was right. They had no way to track their friend without their help. They would just have to hold off on the superpowers until they got closer and hope they could break off to where the two couldn’t see them rescuing their friend. Wally however, was grimacing as he brought up the end of the line behind Adrien on the stairs, thinking about the cupcakes he was about to lose. Maybe if they didn’t cause too much more damage, they could still win.
“This isn’t the first time we’ve had to rescue Chloe from a villain’s hench… thing. I swear if I had a nickel for every time she’s gotten kidnapped… I’d only have like fifteen or twenty nickels but still it’s strange that it’s happened that many times.” Marinette looked back over her shoulder with a smirk, like she was in on a private joke.
Adrien set his mouth and pursed his lips. He refused to laugh at her comment, no matter how badly he wanted to. He looked between the guy behind him and the two ahead of him with an overly bright smile. “Hi, I’m Adrien. If we’re working together, we should probably know each other’s names.”
“Wally,” Wally offered with a chuckle. Unlike Adrien, he had no issue laughing at her comment.
“Robin,” Robin stated diplomatically, still trying to figure out if her comment was correct. He’d been the victim of kidnapping attempts multiple times both as Dick and Robin, but he didn’t know why her friend would have been so often.
Conner continued to stare at Marinette mutely, trying to figure her out better. If he stared long enough, maybe he could place where he’d seen her beautiful eyes before. Marinette gave him a bright, warm smile. “Oh,” Marinette paused and turned to look back at them as they all got onto the ground with a bright, warm smile, “Marinette. My name is Marinette.”
Conner looked away. Marinette thought she saw his cheeks darken slightly when their eyes met, but that could have easily been the taillights from the car that just parked near them. “Conner,” he grumbled.
Marinette nodded at him, giving him a sweet smile. “It is really nice to meet you,” she said earnestly, looking at the other Team members, “all of you.” She took a beat to look at them without a mask and nodded. “Okay, let’s get going then, before Chloe breaks a nail and we have to hear about it for the next six months,”
“Or you know, someone dies,” Conner argued, following her down the road.
Adrien shook his head behind him. “I don’t think we have to worry about that. She won’t kill anyone.”
“Probably… unless they mess with her hair,” Marinette added.
“Most likely,” Adrien agreed with a nod.
Robin gave Wally a confused, questioning look as they followed behind. Wally returned the look. Who the hell were these people?

Part Six
Wally was The Flash, the very same Flash she despised with every fiber of her being. How was she so stupid, all the signs were there and she missed them. Everything about The Flash screamed Wally West, yet she let herself be fooled by the mask and the illusion that they were different people.
That night he took her to the Irish Pub made so much more sense, how he was able to disappear and miraculously not get caught by Captain Cold. With the power of superspeed, anything was possible.
The look Wally was giving her, it seemed he was thinking the same thing.
Wally was familiar with the various Lantern Corps, and yet he somehow missed the violet ring that was always present on her finger. Everything clicked about her in his mind, from the first day he met her to the moment she opened up to him about Jackson’s death. The lack of friends, why she was never present at work, the constant traveling, all the pieces were there.
The fact Y/N lied to him wasn’t what hurt the most. Wally eyed the way Y/N leaned against the wall holding her side. The words she said to him earlier echoing through his mind.
“If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have gotten hit,”
If Wally was being honest with himself, it was his fault she got hurt. The evidence was staring him in the face. Y/N was hurt because of him. Maybe if she had told him who she was none of this-- no. Wally couldn’t place the blame on her, despite whether he knew or not it was still his fault.
They stood there staring at each other not saying a word, the silence that covered them was deafening.
“How long?” was all Wally was able to muster out. He was still in shock from finding out his girlfriend was a Star Sapphire, and he just wanted some answers.
“Since Jackson died, the ring put itself on my finger and the rest is history,” she answered, pushing herself off the wall with a wince. The ring that rested on her finger beeped, alerting her that it was low on power. It explained why her healing was slower than it should be. Y/N didn’t miss the way Wally’s eyes glanced at the ring on her left hand and where her right one was placed, and she knew what he was thinking.
“Wally, it’s not your fault,” she said softly stepping towards him, only for Wally to step back.
“You said it yourself Y/N, if it wasn’t for me you wouldn’t have gotten hit,” he muttered. “Your ring is running on fumes because of me.”
“That’s not fair! I didn’t know it was you!”
Wally’s eyes met hers and Y/N could see the conflict in his gaze. “If you'd known I was the Flash, would that have changed who’s fault it was?”
Y/N was at a loss for words. What was she supposed to say, those words came out in anger? No matter what excuse came out of her mouth, she could see Wally genuinely felt this was all his fault and she was the one who put the idea in his head.
Pulling the cowl back over his head, Wally looked around to make sure no one else was in the area. “I have to go, I’ll see you around Y/N.” Then he took off into the night in a blur, leaving Y/N alone in the gust of wind left in his wake.
Now that he was gone, Y/N realized just how bad she messed up. With a wince, she took a step forward, almost tripping from the intense pain in her side. She wasn’t going to get anywhere in this state, she needed help and her list of allies was slowly dwindling. The only person she could think of that could even agree to help her lived across the country and even then, Y/N and Hal weren’t that close.
But what choice did she have?
Reaching into her purse, Y/N pulled out her phone and dialed Hal’s number mentally grateful that he put it in there in the first place.
“Y/N? This is a surprise, in all the years that I’ve known you you have never called me let alone acknowledge I exist.”
“Shut up Jordan,” she hissed. “I need help and didn’t know who else to call.”
Hal didn’t miss the whimper at the end of her sentence and was already gearing up to head her way. “Just tell me where you are and I’ll come find you.”
“I’m in the alley off Main Street in Metro.”
Hal nodded. “Alright, stay put. I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
Hanging up the phone, Y/N leaned against the wall once more. She didn’t know what her side looked like under the dress, and truth be told she didn't want to. Like he said, a few minutes later there was a streak of green light before Y/N saw Hal lower to the ground next to her and power down his ring.
“Holy fuck, you look like shit,” he said rushing over to catch Y/N before she collapsed. “What happened?”
“Just get me home Jordan.”
Hal nodded and helped Y/N, walking her out of the alley and catching the closest cab. It took just over half an hour for Hal to get back to her apartment, the second they were in the door he helped her sit on the couch before finding the first aid kit.
While Hal was off searching, Y/N forced herself up and walked towards her room. She needed to change out of the dress and into something more comfortable on top of hunting down her personal battery. Hal was bound to have questions, and she would rather not be in a bright purple dress when he asked them.
Finding a pair of sweats and a shirt on the floor, Y/N threw them on before grabbing her power battery from the closet. She usually had it on her dresser, but since Wally had been coming over she hid it out of sight to keep her identity a secret.
Holding out her ring, Y/N took a deep breath and began to recite the oath to power up her ring. "For hearts long lost and full of fright, for those alone in blackest night, accept our ring and join our fight, love conquers all-- With violet light!"
Watching her ring power-up, Y/N looked at her side, the wound was better than she expected but it was still bad all things considered.
Hal walked in with a knock, “Come on, let’s get you patched up.” Helping her back to the couch, he lifted her shirt just enough to clean up the large burn on her side.
He worked in silence as Y/N sat there contemplating everything that happened that night. What was she going to do? She doubted Wally was going to talk to her anytime soon, but Y/N wasn’t sure if she was ready to talk to him herself.
“So, you going to explain to me why your side is one degree away from a barbeque?”
Y/N looked down at him while he applied the burn cream. “I met Livewire earlier. Electricity hurts like a bitch.”
Hal chuckled at her words. “Fair enough, but that doesn’t explain how you got hit.” he prodded.
Clamping up, Y/N knew what Hal was getting at. What had caught her so off guard she got hit? She knew that had a strong friendship with the first Flash and therefore he probably knew Wally. It was a matter of time before Wally told his mentor, and he told Hal.
“I was distracted,” she said softly.
Finishing up with the burn cream, Hal raised a brow at her and huffed. “You? Distracted?” he asked. “What the hell got you distracted?”
“You remember that guy I mentioned I was seeing the last time we talked?” she asked.
Hal nodded as he began to tape the gauze to her burn. “Yeah, never caught his name though.”
Y/N took a deep breath, now was as good a time as any. “His name is Wally.”
Hal kept working as he talked. “Wally? I know someone named that, he’s a good kid,” he commented. “A bit of a brat occasionally, but he has a heart of gold.”
“Hal, it’s the same guy. I’m dating, or was dating Wally West,” she blurted, tired of the tiptoeing around names and secret identities. “I know he is the Flash as well and he knows I’m a Lantern.”
Putting the last piece of tape on the gauze, Hal leaned back and looked at her. “You’re dating Wally? There’s no way. The kid would have mentioned if he was dating a Star Sapphire.”
Y/N groaned. “That’s the thing, Hal, I never told him. He was there with Superman taking care of Livewire. After, he saw me power down my ring and removed his cowl.”
Giving her a look of confusion, Hal rose to his feet and began cleaning his mess. “This makes no sense. If you know who each other is, why didn’t he bring you home? The Wally I know wouldn’t have left you there alone.”
“This is where it gets icky. I said some things to him before I knew who he was,” she sighed. “And they hurt him. Wally blames himself for what happened to me, and I’m the reason he blames himself.”
Hal listened to the story and groaned. “I am the worst person to ask for relationship advice from, but what I can tell you is that you need to talk to him. I’ve known Wally for a really long time, watched him grow up even and I know that he won’t let this go unless someone knocks some sense into him.”
Y/N looked at Hal with surprise. “Since when did you grow a brain?”
“Since my best friend is a forensic scientist, and you tend to smarten up some when you work with Batman regularly.”
Laughing at his words, Y/N slowly rose to her feet. “Well, whatever it is, keep doing it. Who knows, maybe you'll make a great mentor or something.”
Hal gave Y/N an unamused look. “Funny, that’s the last time I helped you out.”
Y/N rolled her eyes and walked towards the kitchen. “Well, since you’re here are you hungry? My dinner plans suddenly got canceled and I am dying of hunger right now.”
With a shrug, Hal joined Y/N for dinner. Hal was old enough to be Y/N’s dad, but she never saw him like that. He was more of a friend, possibly a brother to her. When Carol wasn’t available, Hal was the next person she went to for help.
And if he was going to keep up with the occasional good advice, then maybe good friends wasn’t that far of a stretch.
While Y/N was getting patched up by Hal, Wally sped off to Central City. He didn’t know what to do. He was at fault for the girl he loved getting hurt. People were hurt on missions all the time, but none of them fully placed the blame on him like she did.
It was like Wally went into autopilot and it didn’t click in his brain where he was going until he was standing outside his Uncle’s front door. Barry would know what to do right? He had a secret hero life when he married Iris and yet they managed to make it work.
Raising his hand to knock, the door opened in front of him, and there stood his uncle with Iris at his side.
“Wally? What are you doing here?” Barry asked.
“I messed up, I didn’t know where else to go,” he muttered.
Iris’ face grew concerned as she dragged Wally in the door and had him sit on the chair. “What happened, Wally?” she asked.
“I got someone I love hurt, and it’s my fault,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper as he rested his head in his hands. “It’s my fault she’s hurt, and I’ve lied to her about everything.”
Barry knelt next to his nephew. “Does this have anything to do with a certain girl you’ve been seeing?” he asked.
Wally turned to look at him with a confused look, how did he know?
Seeing the look, Barry chuckled. “I just got off the phone with Hal, he wanted to give me a heads up in case you came here. Wally, she doesn’t blame you.”
“Yes, she does! She said it herself, I’m the reason she was hurt!”
“From what it sounded, Y/N blames herself and not you,” Iris said.
“How could she not blame me? I got her hurt, she said it herself.” Wally argued.
“And how many times have you said something because you were hurt or angry?”
Wally looked at the floor as he rested his arms on his knees. Iris did have a point. Wally was nice to everyone, but there were times when he wasn’t. He was known to have a quick wit, and it showed in his jokes and pick-up lines. But it was also present in his temper, some of the things he’s said while angry were not kind. Of course, he regretted them the moment the words left his lips but it still didn’t change the fact that Y/N got hurt because of him.
“It’s still my fault Aunt I,” he muttered. “Nothing will change that.”
“Wally, if it’s your fault then it’s also her fault,” Barry replied. “You both kept secrets from the other and this is the fallout. Do you really want to lose her because of this?”
Letting out a sigh, Wally nodded. Of course, he didn’t want to lose her, and he never gave her the chance to explain her side of it all. Wally loved her with everything he had, and he felt like an ass for just leaving her alone like he did. If he loved her as much as he claimed he did, he needed to fix all of this starting with going back and talking to her.
Looking up at his aunt and uncle, Wally smiled at them and rose to his feet. “Thanks, Uncle Barry, Aunt I, I think I know what I need to do.” Kissing his aunt’s cheek, Wally hugged them both and sped out of their home and to his own place.
Wally knew what he needed to do, he just didn’t know when. He couldn’t expect Y/N to just let him in hours after he ditched her in the alley. He wanted a second opinion, and the only other person he trusted as much as he did his aunt and uncle lived across the country.
He figured it wouldn't be the greatest idea to show up to Dick’s place in his Flash suit, so he threw on a set of civvies and took the nearest zeta tube to Bludhaven. Dick wouldn’t have cared that much, but if he was seen hanging around in his uniform it could cause some not-so-wanted questions.
It didn’t take him long to end up outside Dick’s apartment door with two boxes of pizza. He knew that he was still out on Nightwing business, so he used the key he hid above the door frame to let himself in. Wally had shown up unannounced before so this was nothing new to them. Dick trusted Wally more than anyone else, letting him into his apartment alone didn’t seem to be that much of a stretch.
Locking the door back behind him, Wally made his way to the fridge and looked through it. Grabbing the jug of apple juice, he grabbed a glass and poured himself some. Looking at the clock, Dick wouldn’t be back for another couple of hours. To pass the time, Wally picked up around the apartment.
With the dishes done, the floors swept and mopped, Wally had quite a while to think to himself. He knew he needed to apologize to Y/N, his fault or not. He left her there alone in an alley and that was something he shouldn’t have done. But after apologizing, he didn’t know what else to do.
Wally was dozing off on the couch when a window to his left opened and in stumbled Dick still dressed in his Nightwing suit. The mask he wore couldn’t hide the surprise on his face when he saw Wally sitting on his couch.
“What are you doing here?” he asked, removing the mask.
“I brought pizza?” Wally replied, raising his brows. “Also, I need your help.”
That last part really caught Dick’s attention. “What happened? Is everyone okay?”
Wally shook his head. “Everyone is fine, I just-- I might have messed up everything between me and Y/N and while Barry and Iris both made a good point, I wanted a second opinion.”
Dick watched his best friend and crossed his arms. “Let me go change and we can talk over the pizza you bought.” he smiled and disappeared into his bedroom. Minutes later, Dick came out dressed in sweats and a shirt running a hand through his hair.
Wally pulled the two pizza boxes out of the oven to keep them warm and set them on the coffee table while Dick grabbed paper plates and napkins. Both of them sat on the couch and dug in.
The quiet that wafted over them was awkward. It was obvious to Dick that Wally needed to talk about something, he was just waiting on him to start talking. It took a couple of slices, but finally, Wally was ready to start talking.
“I’m not sure I’m even supposed to tell you this, but Y/N is a Star Sapphire Lantern.” Wally started.
Dick looked over at him, taking a bit of his pizza as the cheese strung between his lips and the food raising a brow at him. “I might have already known that.”
Wally turned to look at him with a dumbstruck expression. “Did she tell you, or is this one of those weird Batman things where he needs to know the secret identities of every masked person out there?” He asked with a laugh.
Dick chuckled at his words. “Bruce told me when you told me you were dating her I didn’t want to say anything because it wasn’t my secret to tell.”
“Fair enough.”
“Is that what’s wrong? She lied to you about that?” Dick tried.
Wally gave Dick a look. “You really think that of all things, a secret identity would bother me? Dick, come one. I have one myself.”
Dick huffed a laugh. “Okay, fair enough. But if it wasn’t that, then what happened.
Taking a deep breath, Wally told Dick everything. From the moment he showed up, to Y/N getting hurt, to their conversation after the fight and ended with his talk with Barry and Iris. The whole time Dick sat quietly and listened, giving little nods here and there to show that he was listening.
“So, what I am gathering from all this is that you blame yourself for something that was out of your control even after she tried to tell you it wasn’t your fault?” Dick asked at the end. “Is that right?”
Wally nodded. “Yeah, basically. I know she said that it wasn’t my fault, but I know that if I didn’t distract her she wouldn’t have gotten hurt.”
“Walls, we get hurt every day. Do you blame yourself every time I get hurt on a mission? He asked.
“No, I usually call you a dumbass after making sure you’re okay.”
“Exactly my point. In our line of work, we don’t have time to sit around and play the blame game with each other. I know you care a lot about her and I am willing to bet she feels the same. You’re my best friend and I don’t want to see you throw away the best thing to ever happen to you because of something like this.” Dick said, leaning on his knees to watch his friend.
“You’re fault or not, you two need to talk to work this out and see where you go from there. She probably blames herself as much as you blame yourself.”
Wally pursed his lips. “I swear, you and Barry talked before I came here. He said basically the same thing to me.”
Dick laughed and patted Wally’s back. “No, we’re both smarter than you apparently.”
Rolling his eyes, Wally stole a piece of Dick’s pizza and ate it in retaliation.
After his talk with Dick, Wally big him farewell so he could get some sleep and left. He really needed to talk to Y/N to at least see where they stand as a couple, and if she needed more time he would give it to her. Walking back to the zeta tube transport, Wally stepped through and into Metropolis. Lucky for him, her apartment wasn’t too far from the zeta tube so he could just walk at a normal pace and be there in good time.
What was he going to say to her? ‘Hey, babe, sorry for just up and ditching you in the middle of a dark alley?’ Wally cringed at his own thought, he knew he needed to be honest with Y/N but that was just rubbing salt in the wound at this point. The entire walk, Wally thought of different things to say once he saw her, finally settling on a simple apology for running off like that and not giving her the chance to explain. That was the best place to start, and if she didn’t want to see him after that, Wally would have to find a way to live with it.
Wally had been so lost in thought he didn’t notice how quickly he got to her door. Taking a deep breath, he raised his hand and knocked on the door. The wait as he stood outside her door was torture, he knew it couldn’t have been more than twenty seconds, --thirty at max-- but it felt like an eternity.
He had half a mind to knock again when he heard the door open slowly. Wally looked up at the beautiful girl in front of him and every word he had prepared died the instant he saw her dressed in nothing more than a shirt and short shorts. Opening his mouth, the only sound that came out was a squeak.
Y/N raised a brow as she looked at him. “Wally, are you--”
Not letting her finish her sentence, Wally cupped her face and kissed her deeply. Wally kissed her with such force that she stumbled back and Wally kicked the door shut behind him. Her hands wound themselves around his neck pulling herself closer as she felt Wally nibble softly at her bottom lip, pulling a moan from her.
“I’m sorry.” he breathed in between kisses, pulling Y/N impossibly closer to him. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” was all he could say.
Y/N pulled back from the kiss and looked up at him. “I’m sorry too, it’s not your fault. I didn’t tell you who I was or what I did not because I didn’t trust you but because I didn’t want you hurt and I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if--”
Once again, Wally interrupted her with a kiss. “I wasn’t honest with you either,” he replied kissing her cheek. “If I was honest with you earlier, things would be different.”
Pulling away fully once more, Y/N stared into his striking green eyes. “I don’t blame you for not telling me about that. It doesn’t matter if I knew or not, I shouldn’t have said what I did,” she explained.
“I love you Wally, and I don’t want to lose you.”
Brushing the stray hairs out of her eyes, Wally smiled down at her. “I love you too, Y/N.” and leaned down to captured her lips with his own. This kiss was more intense than the last, slowly Wally pried her lips apart with his own and laid claim to her mouth with his tongue.
The mixing of their breaths drove Y/N wild as she tugged at his hair.
Leaning down, Wally gripped Y/N’s thighs and lifted her up as she wrapped her legs around his waist. His hands moved to the swell of her ass, grabbing at it wanting to feel the soft skin under his hands. Y/N moaned against his lips, pushing back into his hands.
Pulling away slowly, Y/N tried to catch her breath under Wally’s intense gaze. “Stay, please?” she asked.
“Of course I’ll stay.”
***
Wally woke the next morning wrapped in Y/N’s sheets, but she wasn’t there. He could smell the breakfast wafting in from the kitchen, so he untangled himself and pulled on his pants. Running a hand through his messy hair, he walked out of the room and saw Y/N standing at the stove wearing his shirt as she cooked.
Crossing his arms and leaning against the doorframe, Wally watched her cook with a smile on his face. It was nice to know that she didn’t blame him, but Wally still blamed himself. Even after he spent the night with her as she told him constantly she didn’t blame him, Wally still couldn’t get the idea out of his head.
Turning to take the plates to the table, Y/N jumped in surprise to see Wally watching her.
“Hey, you.”
“Hey beautiful,” he smiled and walked over, placing a kiss on her temple. “Food smells amazing.”
Y/N smiled at his words and kissed his cheek in return before taking her seat across from Wally as he too sat down to eat. Even after they made up the night before, the atmosphere still felt off. Neither of them could put their finger on it, but was that because they didn’t want to talk about the night’s events?
Looking at the plate in front of him, Wally let out a chuckle. Y/N made all of his favorite breakfast foods consisting of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. Reaching across the table to grab the syrup, his hand brushed her and they both jumped back mumbling an apology to the other.
Something was still wrong between them and they both could feel it.
Y/N’s eyes couldn’t meet his, it was as if she refused to look at him. She still felt guilty at the fact she placed the blame on Wally, and then he proceeded to blame himself. Things like that didn’t just go away with a simple apology sealed with a kiss.
She was still unsure if he blamed her, but none of that mattered because it was all her fault and Wally refused to acknowledge it.
Narrowing his eyes, Wally watched her carefully. “Y/N, what’s going on?”
Looking up at him from her plate, Y/N smiled at him. “I’m okay, what are you talking about?”
Raining a brow at her, Wally leaned back in his chair. “You can barely look at me, there’s something wrong.”
“Nothing is wrong Wally.”
Picking up on the tones in her voice, he had a feeling what it was.
“Y/N, I don’t blame you.”
“No, instead you blame yourself.” she snapped.
Wally was taken back at her tone, she was still upset over this. With a sigh, Wally reached over and took her hand. “I never blamed you.”
“But you should have!” she cried. “You should have blamed me because it was my fault! You wouldn’t be blaming yourself if I didn’t open my damn mouth!”
“Y/N--”
“Don’t try and tell me it’s not my fault! We’ve been over this, so please leave it alone.”
Crossing his arms with a huff, Wally frowned. “I thought we were too, but apparently you’re not.” he started. “It doesn’t matter to me if it was your fault or not, the fact is that I don’t blame you.” he got up from his chair and knelt in front of her. “I never blamed you.”
Y/N turned her head not wanting to look at him. “Well you should, the bottom line is that it’s my fault. If I wasn’t so stubborn and prideful, I wouldn’t have said those things and you wouldn’t be so upset.”
“How many times do I have to tell you that I am not mad at you?” he asked.
“Eternity, don’t waste your breath.”
Wally gave her a deadpan look before he took her hands in his. “Y/N, look at me please.”
Slowly, Y/N turned to see his soft gaze.
“Your fault or not, I do not blame you. I don’t want you blaming yourself over this either alright?” he said softly, his eyes not leaving hers.
Y/N let out a sigh, “I guess you’re right.” she replied. “There’s nothing I can do to go back and change it. All I can do is use it to learn and not repeat those same mistakes.”
Wally’s smile grew as he listened to her talk. It may not have been exactly what he wanted, but it was a start. “Good, now how about we finish eating and I give you a tour of my hometown?” he asked.
“Wally, you live halfway across the country.”
“Babe, I’m the fastest man alive. Distance really isn’t an issue with me.” he grinned and got up giving Y/N a quick peck to her lips. “Maybe if you behave, I’ll take you to meet someone.”
Y/N rolled her eyes and began to eat her food, the smile not leaving her face. “Whatever you say sweetheart.”

Don't Stop Here
She's back. Anne is really back on Earth. She can hardly believe it.
(Picks up immediately after the episode ends) (ao3 link in reblog)
Anne can hardly believe it. Cars honked around her and every breath is heavy with unnatural smog. She meets eyes with a human stranger, who lifts a phone very quickly and stares bug-eyed at her. Not at her, no, at her family. She turns to Hop-pop, Sprig, and Polly, all scratched, bruised, tired, afraid, and looking at her with trust in their eyes. Hop-pop croaks and coughs and Anne notices her frog family's skin is graying. She has to get them out of here. Off the hood of the car, over five lanes of traffic, hopped over the guardrail, down the hill, through a sparse copse of trees, to the sidewalk under the bridge and-
"Anne?" A pink hand tugs on her wrist. "Anne, stop. Please." Her feet stumble to a stop and her socked foot lands on something sharp and cutting and she gasps.
"Anne!"
Two sets of hands catch her torso, and she faintly feels a wet touch pulling at her ankle. Her family carefully let her down, so she lands heavily on her butt instead of her nose. Anne's next breath is a punch of air and her lungs brighten with pain as she loses control of her inhales and exhales. Her eyes hurt and burn. When she wipes a dirty hand across her face, she winces as hot tears and snot sting her injuries. A light weight settles onto her back and rubs in a circular motion. Anne clings to the sensation. Between sputtering breaths, she begins to hear. "-in...and out...in...and out," Hop-pop's soothing, raspy voice repeats and then she can hear Sprig humming. It's a song Wally wrote about a silly snail getting lost and he had sung it at her Frog of the Year party. A laugh bubbles up into a sob and Anne reaches out her arms to pull all three of them close.
"I love you guys," she chokes out, and Polly pats her cheek.
"We love you too, Anne," says the polliwog, normally so energetic now wrung out and too bright-eyed. She needs to pull herself together. Anne releases her grip and her family takes a step back. She runs her hands through her hair and shakes her head, dust and dirt and surprisingly long twigs falling to the broken concrete.
"Alright, froggy fam," she begins, "I'm going to take you to meet my human fam." Sprig whoops, but he's clearly flagging.
"Yay!..."
Anne grimaces and looks at Hop-pop. The old, orange frog meets her gaze steadily, but she can tell how much he is missing his cane. "Hop-pop, you got Polly, I got Sprig?" He nods. "Alright. Let's make our way to the highway, follow along till we hit an exit, follow that till we hit town, figure out where we are, call my parents. Sound good?" No one protests and Anne helps Sprig up to her shoulder as Hop-pop collects Polly.
.
They're maybe ten minutes into their walk, and every step is a jolt to her nervous system. Her skin feels prickly, her jaw too tight, her muscles ache like never before. The pressure of her Newtopian breastplate, once reassuring, weighs her every step like a lodestone. The heron-leather straps pinch at the underside of her arms. Sprig's cool, damp skin is refreshing against the back of her neck, but it's not slimy enough and it concerns Anne. She bites her lip and tries to time her steps so that her sneaker hits the rocks and roots, while her socked-foot hits bare earth. She isn't always successful, and everything is starting to throb. Her temples pulse loudly in her head and her knees are weak and her mouth is parched.
"Shh, shh, it's okay, Polly..." Hop-pop murmurs behind her. She can't see him, but she hears the dragging footsteps crunch the dry grass and the low comfortings of the grandfather to the polliwog. A stabbing pain shoots through her chest, and Anne forces her legs into a march. Focuses on the act of raising her thigh, swinging her calf forward, shifting her weight, repeat ad infinitum.
In seventh grade health class, there had been only one day dedicated to 'mental health issues' and something mentioned was meditative breathing. In multiple P.E. classes, Anne heard the teachers talk about making sure to breath while exercising. One, two, three. In. One, two, three. Out. Anne can do this.
.
The clouds parted a bit as they walked and the sun is nearly blinding Anne, as she squints at the sign. DALY STREET EXIT, it read in giant white text on green. Okay, so now they can get out of the weird in-between highway area they've been hiking. She points at it. "This way."
Something is mumbled behind her back.
"Huh?" She stops to turn and looks at Hop-pop. "What's up?" The elderly frog's face is twisted in a very non-confidence inspiring way.
"Well...Anne, I can't help but notice you don't have your backpack. Or...or your phone. So-" All Anne could hear was a piercing, ringing sound. Her hands clenched and unclenched.
"Right," says Anne, interrupting whatever the old frog had been saying. "Right. I don't have my backpack or phone." She blinks rapidly and Hop-pop's brow furrows deeper grooves. Her fingernails dig grooves of equal depth into her palms. "Okay, so," she claps her hands and ignores Sprig and Polly startle, "we will keep going. We will find someone kind and nice who will be willing to call my parents. End of plan."
"Great plan," Sprig yawns in her ear, and she can't help the yawn in return. It stretches her neck muscles and she yawns again for good measure. Polly yawns, then Hop-pop, then her and Polly at the same time. They all smile and the moment of brevity gets the family going again, the plan -no matter how little Anne believes in it herself- solidly in mind and the goal spurring them on. Not too much further now.
.
The sign for 7-11 flickers and there is a closed down Redbox sitting stoutly next to a ash-tray/trash can. The ad in the window advertises Berry Glam Blitz Bomb and a two for four hotdogs sale. Her stomach rumbles.
Her family is crowded together outside the storefront, and Anne doesn't know what to do. She's loathe to leave the Plantars by themselves, but maybe the cashier won't be the most cynical soul in Los Angeles. Then the frogs won't go under the risk of wandering the streets, talking to strangers. She can't bring them in though, what if the employee freaks out (like...any reasonable person confronted by talking frog people would). A clammy, orange hand taps her arm twice. She looks down.
"We'll be okay for five minutes, Anne," reassures Hop-pop. "Hand me Sprig." She doesn't hand him Sprig so much as the pink frog melts off her back and flops down next to his grandfather, but either way transfer successful. Okay now it's just time to interact with a human who isn't one of her two childhood best friends. She can't be totally out of practice right?
Marcy's eyes had been so wide when she died. Her pretty, dark brown eyes glittering from the light of Andrias' sword. From the flashing blue of the portal home. From tears.
Anne swallows roughly and steps toward the entrance. She scolds herself when the self-automated doors startle her, and she glances around the store. Someone tall and bald by the coolers, someone on the phone in the back, besides them and Anne the place is empty. Well, and the cashier. She approaches the register before she can one-eighty out the stupid doors, and she clears her throat. The cashier, a young guy with bright green and black hair and a name tag reading 'Jared', looks up from his phone.
"Hey-o, ready to check out?"
"Um, no actually," Anne starts and stops. What is she supposed to say? "I...dropped my phone and it cracked badly," she lies. "I was supposed to meet up with my mom but I can't get the dang thing to turn on." She laughs, short and high-pitched, rubbing her neck. "Is there like, a store phone I could borrow to call her?"
Jared raises his eyebrows. "No, there isn't a store phone. If you buy something I could exchange dollars for quarters, I think there's a phone booth near here." The lights are buzzing really loudly, Anne notices. She takes a deep breath.
"Sorry, that doesn't work. Could I borrow your phone?" She sees how the older guy assesses her. She sees her dirty torn school skirt, her scorched copper armor, the twigs that she can't stop finding in her hair. "Or could I give you her number? Please, I just want to get back to my mom." Jared's frown softens and his mouth opens to speak, but is cut off by a voice behind Anne.
"Annie Bone-choy?" Her neck complains at the speed she turns to look. The bald person she saw earlier. Face contorted in open surprise, finger pointed in her direction, he says in a nasally SoCal accent, "Your parents have been looking everywhere for you."
"Do I know you?" Anne asks. Bald guy shakes his head. "No. I like your parents restaurant, amazing noodles by the way, and they have your missing posters all over the front. Yours and two other girls."
"I thought you lost your phone and were meeting up with your mom," Jared unhelpful interjects. Anne looks between both of them.
"Can I please use someone's phone to call my mom?" The two adults look at each other.
"Tell me your mom's number," says Jared tentatively. Anne rattles off the ten digit code with ease. She remembers sitting in the kitchen and her mom helping her arrange plastic magnet numbers in the order of her cell phone number. Jared puts the phone on speaker and the dialing tone begins to ring. Once, twice, three times, four...
"Hi! This is Madee Boonchuy. Not here right now, please leave a message!" The messaging system beeps and Anne just shakes her head at Jared. He ends the call.
"Can you please try again?" She pleads. Jared frowns, but does as requested. The dialing rings again. And gets voice-mail, again.
"I could call the restaurant," the bald guy offers. "It's not exactly rush hour but they are open right now, right?" Anne blinks away the stinging in her eyes. She has no idea what time it is, no idea what day or month or even if it's the same year. Who knows how Amphibia time lines up with Earth time?
"Can you? Please?" He nods and pulls out his phone. A minute while he finds the contact, and now for the third time, the phone rings on speaker. Anne knows what they say about third tries, and she crosses her fingers tightly.
"Hello? Delivery or pick-up?" Familiar, accented English, and Anne has to resist falling to the floor.
"Mom," Anne whispers in Thai, and the voice on the line speaks rapidly.
"Anne? Sweetheart? Oh my god, Anne? Anne?"
"It's me Mom. It's Anne," Anne sniffs and hiccups.
Some sharp, unintelligible yelling comes out the receiver, and there is a rustling and slamming sound before Anne's mom replies, "Where are you?"
Anne blue screens for a second. "I'm..." She struggles to remember. "I'm at a 7-11."
"What? Where? What street?"
"Daly Street," Jared pipes up.
"Who is that?" Her mother says sharply.
"That's just the cashier, he was, he was helping me. Well and another guy who comes to the restaurant apparently? I uh, he says he recognized me from my posters, huh, I didn't realize I'd have any," Anne rambles.
"I'm coming to you, Anne," Her mom promises. "I'm going to hug you so much. I'm coming to you. I have to hang up now, to get in the car, but do not go. Please."
"I promise," says Anne, and when her mom ends the call, she starts crying.
.
She exits the 7-11 once she gets the bald guy and Jared to distract each other (i.e. purchasing a bottled soda), and she spots the Plantars immediately. They're on top of a parked USPS truck. When Anne peers around the vehicle to see the other side of the street, she spies the mailman making his way towards the truck. Crap.
"Guys!" She hisses through clenched teeth. She raps her knuckles against the truck's side and hear Polly yelp. "Guys, get off the truck!" A moment later, Hop-pop and Sprig land beside her, Polly in her brother's arms. Anne pulls them over to the Redbox and huddles on the side opposite to the store entrance. She steps in front of them, hoping her body will shield enough of the frogs so nobody looks closer.
"Your mom is gonna be here soon?" Sprig asks. Anne nods.
"Yep, she'll...she'll be here soon." There's no response, and there is a take-a-tab paper taped to the trash can advertising singing lessons, and it's all Anne can do to not remember the time Sasha threw a karaoke party and they all started singing badly and together, and Anne blinks and keeps talking.
"My mom will come, and she's probably in her mini-van, oh man she's gonna tear through like twenty stop signs and scare other drivers so bad," she snorts, "and maybe there'll be a loose water bottle or a chip bag in the car, and oh man, you guys don't know what sour cream and onion chips are I can't wait to show you-"
"Anne," Hop-pop cuts her off. "Don't forget to breathe." She sucks in a deep breath and feels bile creeping up her throat. She tries to swallow but her mouth is so dry it just hurts. She can't imagine how her frog family's is feeling compared to her, they must be feeling so much worse than her, and they haven't said anything yet. Anne exhales forcefully. When a hand squeezes around her own, she squeezes back reassuringly.
They all jump as a dark red mini-van screeches to a halt in front of the 7-11. The driver exits the car, not wasting time to even park, and runs towards them. "Anne!"
"Mom!!!" Anne cries and she takes only a few steps before she's barreled over.
"Anne, oh my god, thank the heavens it's you! Anne, Anne, oh my baby," Anne's mom sobs into her shoulder before pulling back. Anne stares at her mother. Lets her eyes trace the deepened wrinkles, notice the shining, brown eyes the same shade as her own, the beauty mark on her chin. Her mom's glasses are new. Anne can't remember what they'd been, but now her mom wears tortoiseshell frames.
"I like your glasses," is the first thing to tumble out of Anne's mouth, and she nearly slaps herself. Her mom laughs wetly.
"Oh, Anne, oh, I've missed you so much." Her mother folds her back into her arms. Anne hugs back as tightly as she can for a second before her mom stiffens with a surprised grunt. "And you're so much stronger, when did that happen?"
Anne smiles. "I'll tell you about it." She steps back and grabs her mom by the shoulders. They're the same height now. "I'll tell you all about it." And that means... "Mom, let me introduce you to the Plantars," Anne steps to her mom's side and reveals her froggy family.
Her mother gasps and says something in Thai that Anne doesn't know. She would bet it's one of the worse swear words. "I know it's a shock, cuz, well, two foot tall talking frogs," says Anne and motions for the trio to come a bit closer. "But they protected me, fed me, and loved me while I was stranded in their world." Hop-pop shuffles the closes with Sprig and Polly poking their heads out behind him.
Hop-pop extends his hand. "My name is Hopadiah Plantar, it's an honor to meet you Mrs. Boonchuy." Her mom looks down at the wrinkly, orange hand and then back at Anne. She nods encouragingly and her mom steels herself before meeting the hand with her own.
She gingerly shakes it. "Pleasure to meet you...Hopadiah," Anne's mom says his name carefully. "My daughter says you kept her safe?" Hop-pop nods.
"To the best of my ability," and his face gains a wry look and he rubs the back of his neck. "When she and my grandkids weren't off chasing trouble."
Anne's mom smiles tentatively. "I'm sure. Are these your grandkids here?" Sprig comes out behind Hop-pop's back and puts out his hand.
"I'm Sprig Plantar! And this is-" A loud honk interrupts him and everyone in the group startles, moving to look at the source. A silver BMW is stuck behind her mom's mini-van and the one-way street doesn't give any wiggle around room. A shout filters out of the sports car. "MOVE YOUR CAR!" Except with a lot more swears. Anne's mom sighs.
"Introductions later, let's get in the car," she instructs and everyone moves.
All the frogs hesitate as they get closer, Sprig even flinching when Anne hauls open the back seat door with a slam. She gestures inside. "C'mon guys, it's just like a wagon," Anne says. Polly hops in first and settles into the closest middle row seat. She bounces a couple times.
"It's comfy," the polliwog reports. The jerk in the BMW honks again, even longer. Sprig and Hop-pop pile in and Anne closes the door behind them. She gets into the passenger seat and the feeling of air conditioning against her skin is like. Magic wind. Super relaxing. Like insane luxury. Oh, Anne missed technology.
"Buckle up." Her mom clicks her seat belt into the lock and starts pulling away immediately. Leaving Anne to explain what 'buckle up' means, and what a seat belt is, and no she doesn't know when they were invented. The questions continue as the mini-van pulls onto the highway, but the group soon quiets down. Anne blinks slowly and looks outside the window. The trees and billboards and other cars pass by her so quickly, so much quicker than Bessie could ever go. A pang strikes her heart as Anne realizes Bessie will be all alone. She hopes the Plantar's family snail is taken care of while they're gone. Anne looks away from the window as nausea grips her throat. She's almost home. She can hold off on falling apart for just a little longer.
.
"Anne, honey, are you awake? We're home."
Anne blinks and she squeezes her eyes tight and yawns loudly and long. She hadn't realized she dozed off. "I'm...home." She opens the door and doesn't let her twinging feet deter her from getting a good look at her home. The small bushes that lined the driveway, the slightly dented mailbox, the umbrella her dad always left outside the red door. Anne drinks it all in.
For the past several months she had been in a world with fantastical flora and fauna and shocking experiences every day, but Anne feels dizzy at the sight of her home. Her eyes catch on every detail, the once too-familiar not familiar enough. The bristly door mat; the unpolished brass numbers: 301; the creaky porch step; the small, pink, clay owl figurine Anne had given to her mom for Mother's Day in fifth grade and sat tucked in the corner. Her eyelashes are sticky with tears.
"Your house is SOOOOOOOOO BIG!" Anne snorts and is grateful for Sprig. She turns around to look at the small, pink frog.
"It's pretty nice! I've loved growing up here. Three-oh-one Silver Spring Lane." A gobsmacked look.
"You have springs made of silver?" Sprig's jaw drops. Hop-pop's head pokes out of the van.
"What's this I hear of silver springs?"
Surprisingly, it's Anne's mom who answers. She laughs, and it soothes Anne, before saying, "No, Hopadiah. It's just a nice name for a road." Anne tunes out what Hop-pop replies in favor of turning back to the door.
The metal door handle is hot to touch, searing from the oppressive California heat. She breathes out in a harsh whoosh and forces herself to yank the door open. It slams against the wall and the hinges squeak. Anne hears a sound of protest from her mom, but she can't acknowledge it when there's a bullet of fluff running towards the door.
"DOMINO!" The cat jumps into Anne's arms and she catches her, swinging Domino around and around and gosh, will Anne ever stop crying today? She hides her tears in Domino's soft, white belly, and laughs as the cat wiggles around to climb up her shoulders. Domino wraps around her neck and rubs Anne's check with her cute, little face.
Anne collapses to her knees and she pulls her cat around and holds her so carefully and so, so close. Domino allows this longer than ever before, but soon she does squirm and fall to the carpet on all four feet. She chirps and purrs vacuum-like. Anne's hands move on their own accord, stroking down Domino's back, scratching all her sweet spots, reacquainting herself with her Domino, her beautiful angel baby.
"Anne, could you move your reunion a few feet more into the hallway? So we can come in?" Her mom says, her tone telling Anne she's smiling. Anne kisses her baby's head one more time before standing up and moves to the side. Ugh, her knees hurt from carpet burn. That's one thing she hadn't missed.
"Sprig, Polly, Hop-pop! Remember the killapillar?" Anne scoops up Domino and holds her out. "This is Domino One!" Sprig steps closer, squinting. He pokes at Domino's paw and she mrrps! at him. He flinches back for a second before staring deep into her eyes. Anne watches this stare-off with no small amount of amusement.
Eventually, Sprig asks, "So this Domino won't kill us for dinner?" Anne shakes her head and a leaf drifts from her hair.
"Nope!"
Sprig oh so slowly reaches a finger to Domino's long-haired back. "Oh!" He says, curling his fingers through the fur. "She's even softer than peatmoss."
Polly joins her brother and jumps up and down on her new, little legs. "Let me pet her!" Anne leans back down, but Domino wriggles out her grip and runs down the hallway, disappearing around the kitchen corner. Polly pouts. "Aw! I wanted to touch Domino One."
Anne pats her yellow bow. "Don't worry. There's plenty of time for that later."
"I believe a good use of time right now," Anne's mom says, still lingering in the open door, "would be for you to change out of your dirty clothes. Go take a shower."
Anne stares at her mom stunned. "Oh my god...," she whispers. "I shall finally be clean." Sprig laughs.
"Are there no showers where you come from?" Anne's mom asks Hop-pop as Anne still revels in the very idea of pressurized water.
"I can't say I know what a shower-whatsit is, but we did bathe," Hop-pop says archly, half at Anne's mom and half at her. Her mom nods understandingly. Then frowns.
"Do you have any spare clothes with you?" She asks and all the Plantars go wide-eyed.
"We..." Hop-pop can't finish his sentence hands twisting his ascot. Sprig looks morose and he's holding onto his slingshot tightly. Polly is similar, tugging at her frayed and dirty yellow bow. Anne's heart twinges, and she cuts in.
"We didn't exactly have time to pack our wardrobes when we came, Mom," she says. "I have piggy bank money, we can go shopping guys! You guys have to see the mall. This time, my treat," she tries to cheer up the little frogs.
Sprig and Polly perk up at the mention of visiting the mall, but Hop-pop and her mom both protest at once.
"Anne, that's mighty kind of you, but-"
"Anne, that's very generous, but-"
Both stop and her mom motions for the frog to continue. Hop-pop waits a second more before saying, "Anne, you don't need to spend your savings on us. We can make do if you just show us to a wash bucket and a needle with thread. When these get worn out, we'll cross that river when we come to it." Anne's mom then lays a hand on Hop-pop's shoulder, slightly crouching to reach. Hop-pop nods at her.
Her mom smiles before saying to him, "I can certainly show you the washing machine, but we'll figure out another set of clothes for you." Her gaze casts over Sprig, Polly, and Anne. "For all of you. And Anne," her mom walks up to her and she smiles with glistening eyes, "when did you grow up so much?" She brings Anne into a tight hug before releasing her. And boops her nose. Anne squeals. Her mom smiles. "I will pay for the shopping. Now!" She claps. "Shoes off."
Everyone looked down at their feet and noticed the frogs didn't have any. "Ah well, shoes and...shoe off. Anne, what happened to your shoe?"
Anne waves it off. "Lost it a few months ago." Her mother grumbles and Anne suspects she'll be getting a new pair of sneakers in the near future. Then it occurs to her, "Where's Dad?"
"He had to stay to make sure the delivery went smoothly since Jackson quit and everyone else messes it up," her mom explains while running her hands through Anne's hair.
Anne gasps. "No! Not Jackson."
"Yes, Jackson," replies her mom. Her fingers tug painfully through Anne's hair and come away holding a handful of leaves and twigs. "Is there an entire forest in your head? Now off you go, shower. Get the dirt off," she commands. Anne rolls her eyes.
"Yes, Mom," Anne says in Thai and kisses her cheek. She looks to the Plantars. "You guys okay with my mom showing you around the house? Show you somewhere to sit and some water?"
Hop-pop nods and Polly wiggles. "I have a mighty THIRST," she yells. Anne giggles.
"Well, alright froggy fam. See you on the flip side," and she starts to head up the steps, her fingers trailing the railing, when a cough causes her to pause. She glances back.
"Anne..." Sprig says, "welcome home."
Tears spill over her cheeks and Anne half-falls down the stairs to give him a tight hug. Quickly, other froggy arms surround the two and are joined by a pair of human arms. All together, all safe, all alive. Anne takes a deep breath, and exhales heavily. She's back home.

Dick and Roy are little shits to each other, until the night takes a turn for the worse.
Full story under cut
“Aight, Donna, you ready to go?” Roy chirped, taking a second to look himself over in the mirror, running his fingers through his (surprisingly) soft hair (he’d be stealing Dick’s shampoo more often) – getting that perfect messy, but stylish look. He fired off finger guns at his reflection – he was killing it, somehow listening to Gar of people had worked out – he gave shockingly good fashion advice.
Feeling optimistic, he sauntered into the hall, only to be met with Donna’s confused expression.
“Roy, I’m going out with the girls tonight, I told you like four times.” She leaned against the wall, gesturing to Jesse and Toni, car keys dangling from her hand. Jesse stared at him, an eyebrow cocked judgmentally, as Toni smiled, offering a little wave. He waved back, watching Jesse’s expression morph into disapproval.
“Hey, I didn’t even do anything!” He complained, glaring at Jesse. She rolled her eyes, not deigning to verbally respond. Ice queen.
Reaching out, Donna patted his shoulder, waiting until he met her eyes. “I’m sorry, hun, but we’ve got tickets to a concert, could we go out next weekend?” She fluttered her eyelids slightly, sending chills up his spine. “Why don’t you take one of the boys with you?”
“Terrible company, but babe, have fun, I’ll figure something out.” He cupped her chin in his hand, leaning forward to peck a kiss to the top of her head, ignoring the fact she squatted down to make the moment work.
“Mm, thanks.” With that, the girls were off for the night, leaving him stranded in a deserted hallway.
Well. He could do what Donna suggested and take out one of the guys – he had the reservation, and Lian was already situated with the sitter. But which guy was the question… Wally was out with the league, Garth was visiting home, Vic was with Gar, and Grant had a date. Which left Dick – no - Dick was busy working – actually yes – he likely needed a break.
Actually – was he even here?
He started towards the central control room, poking a head in Dick’s room on the way and had to do a double take.
“You’re actually in <em>your room</em>?” Dick threw a pencil at him without looking up from his desk, child’s play to dodge – Dick speak for hmm, maybe something like ‘asshole’, but he took it as an invitation to enter. But if Dick was going to call him an asshole, he had expectations to live up to.
He took a standing leap, twisting and flopping across Dick’s immaculately made bed, sending blankets and pillows careening off the side. Dick ignored him, scribbling down some notes on a pad of paper. Roy waited for a few minutes, listening to the scratch of pen on paper. Quick and noisy – Dick was likely stressed – he was pushing down harder than normal; he gave it an eighty/twenty chance something was up.
Ripping paper proved him right, as Dick frustratedly crumpled up the page of notes, throwing them behind him, hitting the recycling bin with ease. Groaning, he dropped his head into his hands, rubbing his eyes.
“Showoff.” Dick startled, jumping out of his chair, Roy’s own reflexes were the only thing that saved him from taking a pen between the eyes.
“What the fuck, Richard?!” He yelled, yanking the little missile out of the air. A faint flush tinted the top of Dick’s ears.
“I forgot you were there.” The admission was almost too quiet to hear, but combined with the minute sign of embarrassment, it rang of truth. Roy could milk this, oh he totally could.
“What was that, why did you almost kill me?” If he played his cards right, he wouldn’t be dining alone tonight.
“I didn’t think you were…” Dick trailed off, glaring at him. “You heard what I said.” He retorted, catching on. Sucks to suck, Dickie – he was obviously tired if that spooked him – he was likely running on caffeine.
“Oh, you misunderstand.” Scooching off the edge of the bed, he hopped lightly onto the balls of his feet. “Why’d the batboy forget I was there, hmm?” He pulled a half-eaten energy bar off the desk, inspecting the wrapper. Dick casually rocked back in his chair.
“See, completely decaf, I told you I’d-” Roy yanked open a drawer, Dick darting to stop him. “This is my desk!” He slammed the drawer shut a moment too late – Roy had good eyes after all.
“Hmm, so how do you explain the-”
“Get out, I have stuff to do – aren’t you supposed to be on a date with-”
“-CAFFIENE PILLS IN YOUR DRAWER!” He shouted through Dick’s response, effectively shutting him up. There’d been an intervention years ago after too many days spent on one hour or less of sleep. “You know the deal.” Dick groaned as he ruffled his hair.
“I have to-”
“Eat, shower, and sleep. And I have reservations. For two. You’re coming with me.” Ah yes, a romantic dinner date with Dick Grayson. People would kill for this. Dick crossed his arms. Roy picked up his chair, staggering towards the door. Dick was going whether he liked it or not, a real meal (not protein shakes or energy bars) would do him good.
“No one’s even done this to me in like, a year.” He noted, gracefully leaping out of the seat. “Asshole.” Grumbling he lightly punching him in the arm before heading into his walk-in closet, stripping off his shirt as he went. Automatically, Roy scanned for any new injuries, his eyes lingering over a few of the old.
“Liar, Wally caught you two months ago. Besides, the restaurant is nice, Donna likes it and you two are basically the same person, so you’ll love it.” Dick scoffed, stepping out of view.
“Is that all I am to you? Your replacement for Donna?” He sounded mildly offended.
“Nah, you’re too ugly to replace her.” Dick hmphed. “And your personality sucks.” Roy added.
“Why the hell am I going with you?”
“It’s not like your night could get any worse.” Dinner was better than casework after all.
Dick’s head poked out the doorway, looking completely unamused. “Asshole.” He chirped a second time, ducking back away.
Roy sat across from him, speaking between mouthfuls of pasta, smacking his lips together. “So anyways this kid, Johnny is like, sitting next to Lian in class, and he keeps taking her crayons and won’t give them back.” Dick thought for a moment, watching Roy drum his fingers rhythmically on the table. “And the teacher is being ridiculous, she just believes Johnny over Lian. My Lian! Can you believe it?” He slammed his fork down, articulating the point.
<em>And you’re sure Lian gave you the whole story?</em> Was what Dick wondered, but he’d prefer not to die for questioning Lian’s integrity tonight. “Why don’t you mark her crayons with a sharpie and let the teacher know?” Roy’s fingers stopped.
“Huh, hadn’t thought of that.” He leaned back in his seat, distantly looking out the window. People trickled down the street, passing by the little café, kicking up crimson leaves from half empty trees. Streetlights flickered on; fairy lights crisscrossing the avenue, as the sun lazily sunk in the sky. It was a beautiful night – Roy was right, he did love it, the food was good – catching up with Roy was refreshing – and the location was stunning; as always, Roy always picked the perfect places for dates. Dick was past the point of being annoyed at the situation but was still determined to give Roy a hard time.
“Well, maybe if you thought about that instead of harassing me.” He leaned forward, resting his head on his hand, dramatically looking out the window – Babs was going to kill him for being late with his case reports. Again. Roy smirked as he rocked forward, reaching across the table to lay a hand on his forearm. He at least had the decency to look apologetic.
“Look, you know the deal.” Brushing his thumb against his skin placatingly, he waited until Dick met his eyes. “You’re working full time, and have your nightly duties, and you’re with us.” His voice dropped, his nostrils flaring in irritation. “It’s not like you’ll leave Bruce alone any time soon either. Dick.” His eyes crinkled around the edges – concern. “You’ve got to start taking care of yourself.” Dick rolled his eyes; he was doing fine.
“You’re working with Ollie, you have a daughter, and you’re working with us, look I had one breakdown-”
“More than one-”
“-Only one that wasn’t the result of external influences.” Fuck Brother Blood for the other ones. “We made the caffeine deal after,” he grimaced reflexively “I broke up with Kory but, Roy.” He clasped Roy’s hand with his other hand reassuringly. “I promise I’m doing better now.” Tilting his head to the side, he cracked his neck. “Plus, you only brought me along because Donna was busy, that’s not what the deal was for.”
“Okay, maybe that was shitty of me, but it’s nice seeing you without the tights.” Roy flashed a winning smile. “Not that I don’t like seeing you in them, the new stuff looks great.”
“Oh, so I don’t look great now?” He teased. He’d picked out his brightest shirt for the occasion – a polo patterned after bowling alley carpet paired with the tightest red jeans he could find, and of course, a pair of heels borrowed from Donna. A single giant hoop earring dangled off his left ear. If he was going out with Roy, he wanted people taking pictures. Payback. This would be in the news tomorrow.
“Babe,” Roy lifted up his hand, pressing a kiss to his knuckles. “You look stunning.” He grinned goofily, seemingly happy to play along. Welp. If that’s how they were going to play it. He booped Roy’s nose, watching his pupils dilate. Dick recoiled in surprise – Roy wasn’t -
“Wait, you’re not actually-”
A scream cut him off, whirling around in his seat he saw a large man storming into the café brandishing a gun, his face red beet red and angry. He turned back, squeezing Roy’s hand, nodding towards the silverware.
“No-no one else move!” The guests around them stayed frozen in place. Three older ladies on their right, a family of four on their left (he guessed it was the young girl who screamed), and a couple across from them. The staff ducked behind the counter as people outside the restaurant scrambled away.
Dick raised his hands slowly. “I said no one move!” The gun pointed directly at him. Perfect.
“Okay, I won’t move.” He said steadily, watching sweat bead on the man’s head – he was nervous, his hands twitched uneasily on the gun – possibly his first time, and he kept muttering to himself. He watched Roy’s hand carefully creep towards silverware in his peripheral. “Do you want money? My father is rich.” Watching the man jitter about, he slowly stood up. Roy’s hand closed around the fork.
“Okay? You-you can get me money?” The man mused to himself, shifting his weight back and forth. He started lowering his gun, taking a step forward, he reached out his other hand. Dick took a few steps to the right, away from his chair, shifting attention away from Roy. “Okay the-”

“STOP!” Someone slammed into his side, and he hurtled to the ground. “HOLD YOUR FIRE!”
Roy’s face hovered above him. “Dick! You’re going to be fine.” His hands clamped napkins to his left shoulder, one on his front the other on his back – and shit – that was a lot of blood. “Hey, look at me.” Pain radiated out for the spot as Roy doubled the weight on the wound, blood seeping out past his fingers, waves pulsating in time to his heartbeat.
Cops burst in through the door, rushing to swarm the dead body. One glanced their way. “Oh shit, you hit the fa-”
“Fucking call an ambulance you dipshits!” Roy’s voice sounded farther away. “Slow your heart, fuck, do your Jedi weirdo bat tricks.” He hissed. Too late, sometimes, things happen too fast. “They hit an artery.” The blood wasn’t stopping, the napkin was soaked through, Dick felt himself slipping into shock. “Dick, stay awake!”
“Lo-ve y-ou.” He stumbled over the words as the world exploded – a million things happening at once – his thoughts scattering as black tinged his vision, overcoming everything.
Roy scrubbed his hands, pausing over the sink, watching the pink water rush down the drain, gurgling as it went. He rubbed a hand further, tackling the blood crusted over his elbow. He made a mistake of catching a glimpse of himself in the mirror –Dick’s blood was everywhere, coating his shirt, arms, pants, even some on his face. His stomach flipped, clenching tightly as he started to gag - fuck.
Throwing himself over the toilet, dinner rising back up in his throat, he threw up the seat. Shaking, he held himself over the porcelain toilet, fingertips staining it red, as he heaved. Soap bubbles dripped from his hands over the edge of the bowl, spattering on the ground.
Each drop spurred a recollection of the night’s events.
*Plop* The man was dead before he hit the grown, brain matter spattering the wall.
*Plop* A bullet whistled through the air, missing Dick by millimeters, lodging six inches next to the little girl’s head. He ran, screaming <em>“Dick!”</em>
*Plop* Blood sprayed out, a bullet ripping through Dick’s shoulder, as he kept moving towards the man.
*Plop* <em>“Stop!”</em> Tackling Dick out of the way, he screamed for them to stop, ripping napkins off a table and desperately trying to stop Dick’s life from slipping through his fingers.
He fell to his knees, a pit growing in his stomach spreading to his chest, rooting him to the spot. He curled his knees to his chest. Fuck. Dick had been shot before. But this? It was different. They weren’t in costume, they hadn’t been ready – the man hadn’t even shot anyone, only the bastard cops had.
<em>“Love you.”</em>
What kind of final words were those! He sat on the tile floor, banging his head into the side of the wall. Dick couldn’t die. Not because he forced him on some dumb dinner date! It wasn’t fucking fair!
His vision blurred, but he couldn’t do anything to stop the tears, unless he wanted blood in his eyes. Just – fuck. “FUCK!” His shout reverberated around the room. This was all his fault – he should have stayed home with Lian, guilt pooled in the bottom of his stomach. Why couldn’t he just leave well enough alone? Why’d he always have to have the last word? What was wrong with him!? Normal people didn’t antagonize each other like that!
The door creaked open. “Roy?” Garth called, the door squealing as it slowly opened. “Donna’s here too, are you ohhhhhhhhh-kay?” His jaw dropped, though he quickly recovered. Roy looked away, in a failed attempt to hide the tear tracks on his cheeks.
Garth stared at his hands. “That’s a lot of blood.” He muttered, his eyes darting around the room. “I mean, I brought you clean clothes.” He placed pair of sweats and a ratty t-shirt he’d stolen from Dick years ago on the counter. Roy’s eyes lingered on the shirt, no doubt the choice had been intentional.
The sound of rushing water cut through the silence, seeming to grow louder with each passing moment. Garth leaned back against the counter, hopping up next to the sink. “He’ll be fine.”
“Yep.” Dick was always fine. Always fine until he wasn’t.
“It’s not your fault.” Wrong.
“Debatable.” Garth frowned at the response but held his tongue. Instead, he let his head fall back against the mirror, staring up at the ceiling.
Softly, barely above a whisper, he continued. “I left you all alone for one day and this is how it ends up.” Roy bit his lip. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there.” Guilt bubbled in the bottom of his stomach, and annoyance overcame him; they’d had these conversations before.
“Are you kidding me? I know what you want me to say. It’s not your fault – of course not. But then you’ll say ah but it’s not my fault either.” Angrily throwing his arms in the air, he continued, his voice growing louder. “And no – Garth – actually it is my fault!” He could feel the blood rushing to his face. “I’m the one who made him go to the restaurant. I’m the one was too late getting him out of the line of fire!” His voice resounded around the cramped room. He banged his head against the wall again. “Look, I know what you’re trying to do and thanks. But no thanks.”
Nonchalantly shrugging, Garth gestured to the water. “Wallowing here won’t make you feel less guilty. Apologizing when he wakes up will help, and I’m sure you’d prefer to be clean when the time comes.”
“Garth? Could you just…” He trailed off; anger quickly overcome by a wave of guilt. Shut up? Leave? Stop? He wasn’t sure, but he was sure he didn’t deserve whatever pity Garth was feeling. A wet paper towel smacked him in the face.
“Kick you in the rear so you’ll get off your sorry ass and clean yourself up?” Hopping off the counter, Garth strode over, lifting Roy by the elbow. “That’s not my style. But I’ll help you get cleaned up.” He let himself be dragged towards the running water, facing himself in the mirror once more, though this time he focused on Garth.
Sometimes Dick could swear he was actually a time traveler. Or maybe had latent teleportation abilities. Realistically, he’d probably just blacked out from blood loss or a concussion, but eh, that option wasn’t as fun. Blinking, he found himself in a familiar setting; a hospital room in a private wing, at – a clock ticked to his left, looking up – it was 4:19am.
He waited a minute, watching the clock turn to 4:20 - nice.
What was he doing again? How long was he out?
He struggled for a moment before remembering that he went out with Roy at 6pm last night, so he was out for… god math was hard. Six to twelve is six hours plus four, uh, ten hours and twenty minutes. Right. As long as it was the same day, he was set.
“Shit.” He promptly realized he couldn’t move his left arm. A sling. UGH. “Son of a-” he cut himself off, realizing he wasn’t alone in the room, Donna was gently snoring in a nearby chair, a little throw blanket covering her. The patterns had fish people… there was a word for that… mer-somethings-maids, mermaids. Mermaids – Garth – Garth was here, that was his blanket.
Dick scanned the room, checking for signs of life. Someone’s bag was on the floor, but he didn’t feel like expending the brain power to figure out who’s. Alright. He steeled himself. Now was the perfect time for escape.
The room spun as he sat up, turning around and round again before his eyes. Hah. Count Vertigo was way worse than this. Yep, head empty, room spinning, this was fine. Swinging his legs over the bed, an alarm blared next to his head.
“Fuck!” He jumped out of his skin, springing to his feet, in a defensive position. Well. He thought he did. The room was tilting on its side, the high-pitched noise shattering his thoughts. Instinctively, he tried to run.
“Woah there, shorty.” He found himself held by strong arms, the world turning once more. The familiar scent of Roy’s aftershave overpowered his senses. Distantly he was aware of the alarm turning off, his legs hitting the back of the bed. Roy’s face swam into view as he was guided back onto the bed, now propped up by soft pillows. So much for escape…
He closed his eyes, waiting for the rush of dizziness to pass. “Roy?” Warm arms wrapped around his torso, snaking tenderly around the sling. “What?” He mumbled - not that he was complaining, as he nestled his chin on Roy’s shoulder. He sighed contentedly, pressing his face into Roy’s stiff neck, closing his eyes and basking in the warmth.
For some reason, the wheels in his brain began turning. Roy. Dinner. Gunshots. His eyes shot open. “Fuck did you get hit, are you okay?” He pulled back, scanning Roy for injuries.
“I’m fine.” Roy facepalmed.
“What?”
“You got shot and you’re asking if <em>I’m</em> okay?” Roy shook his head, exhaustion clear in his voice. Dick looked at his sling again.
“I got shot?” It was like a piece of a puzzle clicking into place. “I got shot…” Wasn’t he supposed to be somewhere else? “How the fuck am I supposed to explain this to my boss?”
Sighing, Roy took a seat on the edge of the bed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Why are you like this?” Turning, he looked Dick in the eyes. “Don’t answer that actually. Look, I’m sorry I made you go out to dinner.”
“Why? It was nice.” The food was good. Sputtering, Roy searched for words.
“Well. Don’t say I never apologized.” A little bit of a blush crept up his neck.
His mind abruptly recalled something he’d heard Roy saying to Lian. “Apologies come with hugs.” Roy rolled his eyes but moved closer anyways.
“You don’t even know why I’m apologizing.” He mumbled, brushing Dick’s bangs to the side. Dick grinned as Roy pecked his forehead, sweeping him into a second embrace. Two hugs in one day – that was a pretty good day. Roy’s fingers stroked through his hair, as Dick leaned into his muscular side, the world spinning slightly, though he’d found a solid rock to lean on.

Mirror Image - Young Justice Imagine
Requested by Anon - Can you write where the reader is the male twin of Artemis; who looks just like Sportsmaster, and is planning to dye his hair while thinking negatively to himself because of the unconscious reactions that his mom and sisters give him? And what their reactions would be when they find out?
***
You sighed, unlocking the door to the apartment. It was late, probably around ten o’clock. You had to meet with a group from school to work on a project. Gotham Academy was all about group work. It made you miss your old school. You were still wondering how you and your twin, Artemis, got scholarships. It was suspicious.
“Who is it?” Paula, your mother, asked. She rolled out into the hallway. Her smile dropped when she saw you. You saw her eyes flash dangerously.
“Mom, it’s me.” A wave of exhaustion washed over you.
“Oh, sorry con trai.” Paula relaxed. Your heart lifted slightly at the nickname. Her smile returned. “How was your project? Did you get your work done?”
You kissed her cheek as you went to the kitchen. “Good. We’ll ace the project for sure.” Getting a drink from the fridge, you cursed your genes again. Why couldn’t you have looked more like your mother? You hated that your appearance always made her think of your father first.
“Artemis is in her room. Will you make sure her homework is done?” Paula watched as you quickly finished your drink.
“Yeah, sure.” You placed your cup in the sink and left to Artemis’ room. The door was shut with soft music playing inside. You bit your lip before timidly knocking on the door.
“Mom! I said I’m working on it!” The door opened. Artemis gasped. “Dad.” Suddenly, her fist went flying toward your face, but you ducked just in time.
You caught her fist. “It’s me, but thanks for that.” Your heart sank. “Mom wanted me to make sure you have your homework done.”
Artemis yanked her fist out of your grasp. “Sorry, you just look so much like him since you got your last growth spurt.” She crossed her arms, blushing in embarrassment. “I’m working on it.”
“Do you want help?” You found yourself asking her, despite the urge to go lock yourself in your room.
She made a face that reminded you of the time where she almost stabbed you in the eye with one of her arrows. It was caused by a fight that your father instigated between the two of you. Now you really wanted to run. “I got it.”
“Fine. Night.” You hurried away and escaped to your room. Locking your door, you sighed, leaning against it. The mirror on your wall glowed from the streetlight drifting in through the window. You glared at it. It shined back your reflection and even you almost thought you were your father for a brief second. You pulled off your shoe and tossed it at the mirror. It shattered, sending glass everywhere.
“(Y/N), what was that?!” your mom asked, her voice coming down the hall.
“Nothing, Mom. My mirror just fell off the wall,” you said through the door.
Paula knocked on your door. “Are you alright?”
You debated opening the door, but then you thought about how her eyes would narrow as she would first see your father instead of you. “Yeah, don’t worry about me.”
“Okay.” Paula sounded hurt. You heard her roll back down the hall.
“I can never win.” You whispered, closing your eyes tiredly.
***
You adjusted your mask. “Remember we’re not related. Green Arrow just happens to be our mentor. That’s how we know each other,” Artemis said sternly.
“Yes, you tell me everyday.” You sighed. Artemis relaxed and led you to old phone booth zeta tube in an Gotham alleyway. “And keep my mask on.”
Artemis turned to look at you. There was the flash of pure resentment before it faded. Even with the mask on, you still looked very much like your father. “You look way too much like Dad.”
“I get reminded every day.” You nodded for her to go in first. She bit her lip. Guilt flared in her eyes. It made you only feel slightly satisfied. She went inside. The computer spoke and she disappeared in the gold light.
You entered the zeta tube. The computer’s voice echoed as you closed your eyes at the bright light. You started walking forward to find yourself suddenly walking into the cave.
“Woah, did you and (Y/H/N) come together today?” Kid Flash aka Wally teased at Artemis. He made kissing noises. You shook your head, smiling when Artemis flipped him off. Wally laughed before zooming off to somewhere. The scent of freshly made cookies floated in the air.
M’gann flew into the room with a plate of cookies in her hand. “I tried this brookie recipe.” She stopped by you. “Want one, (Y/N)? It’s half cookie half brownie.”
“Sure, thanks.” You took one and bit into it. It was still warm, melting into your mouth. “This is great, M’gann.”
She blushed. “You’re welcome.” She flew away. You watched her go to Artemis and offer her a cookie. Finishing off the cookie, you headed to the training room. Conner was inside, lifting weights.
“Hey Conner.” You joined him. He grunted in response. “You want me to add another weight to that? Looks too easy for you.”
“I’m fine. Everything is fine.” Conner gave you a look that made you glad he didn’t have heat vision.
“You okay?” You raised an eyebrow at him. “Because you don’t sound fine.”
“Are you okay?!” Conner dropped the weight. It crashed to the floor with a loud echoing boom. “I said I’m fine.”
You flinched, frowning. “I get it. I’ll leave you alone.” You turned toward the door. Your stomach twisted uncomfortably.
Conner sighed. “Sorry.” He cleared his throat, picking up the weight to put it away. “I...I went to see Superman. He still won’t talk to me.” You turned back to him, surprised.
“What an asshole.” You smiled, sitting down on the bench. Conner kept his back to you.
“Yeah, I guess he is,” Conner chuckled. You watched the tension drain out of his shoulders. “It’s just hard. I was always meant to replace Superman if he should fall. It never occurred to me that he wouldn’t want to meet me.” Conner frowned, crossing his arms. “I can’t get away from it. I get reminded every time I look in the mirror.”
You nodded. “I get it.” Conner looked at you curiously. “I look a lot like my dad to the point everyone in my family thinks I’m him for a second before they see me.” You realized Artemis would kill you for mentioning your family, but you figured it was safe as long as you didn’t mention your family was also Artemis’.
“Most people would be happy to look like their father.” Conner sat down next to you. You gave him a sad smile.
“My father is not a good man.” You swallowed hard.
Conner snorted. You both fell silent for a long time. A weight left your chest for a time, knowing you were with someone who first saw you for yourself. However, reality came crashing back as Batman’s voice called everyone to the mission room. Conner got up to leave first, but stopped and looked back at you. “Thank you, (Y/N).”
“You’re welcome.” You followed him, getting a rare genuine smile from Conner.
***
“What are you doing here?” Cheshire hissed in your face as she sat on your chest with her knees on your arms to hold you down. “I told you I don’t need your help.”
“Jade, it’s me, (Y/N).” You groaned. Jade had grown since the last time she tackled you way back before she ran away from home. You had grown too, but she was still making it hard for you to breathe.
She relaxed and climbed off you. “Sorry. You just look so much like our father.”
“Right.” You coughed, sitting up. The mission had gone haywire, and you got separated from everyone else. You were just about to get your bearings when Jade jumped you. “How are you, sis?”
Jade snorted, taking her mask off. She offered you a hand. You eyed it before taking it and getting to your feet. “You joined the Justice League group with Artemis, didn’t you?”
“Yeah, and you joined the League of Assassins.” You shook your head, rubbing your sore back. She hit you hard. “I can’t believe you work with Dad.”
“Shut up. It’s the job.” Jade crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. “Does your group know who our family is? Artemis desperately doesn’t want them to know. She let me go last time we met to prevent me from spilling the beans.”
“No.” You glanced around, taking in the surroundings. “They think we only know each other because of Green Arrow.” You frowned. “What are you doing here?”
Jade just smirked before putting her mask back on. “Wouldn’t you like to know?” She patted your shoulder. “It was nice to see you, little brother.” She threw down a smoke bomb and disappeared. You coughed, the smoke going straight into your lungs. “You should change your face. They’re going to find out if you keep looking so much like our father.” Her voice echoed in the room.
You caught your breath. “Where did you...” Suddenly, something hit you hard on the back of the head and everything went black.
***
A bright light blinded you as you opened your eyes. Your head throbbed like it was being run over by a semi truck. “He’s awake,” Batman said as a black form appeared in your vision. The soft surface you laid on shifted.
“Oh, thank god.” Suddenly, you felt arms wrap around you. From the voice, you guess Artemis was hugging you. “Don’t you ever do something like that again.” She smacked your arm.
“Ouch.” You moaned, blinking as the room came into focus. You sat up. The clean white walls of the cave’s med bay surrounded you. It made you want to puke. “Don’t hit me.”
Suddenly, a bright light shined into your eye. You jumped, but a heavy hand rested on your shoulder. “I’m checking your pupils.” Batman turned off the light and slowly you were able to see again. “They’re dilating normally, but I suspect you have a concussion at least.”
Artemis held you tighter and you felt sicker. “Is there a garbage can?” You swallowed hard, a metallic taste forming in your mouth. Artemis jumped away from you and stuck a bucket in your face just in time.
You felt Batman rubbing your back as you gagged. Artemis went to the door. The rest of the team’s voices floated in, but Artemis wouldn’t let them in. It was at this point you realized your mask was off. Your heart sank.
Once you were done, Batman took the bucket away and handed you a glass of water. “What happened?” he asked.
You sipped the water, glancing toward Artemis. Batman followed your gaze. “Artemis, go call Green Arrow,” he said pointedly. She blinked in surprise before stepping out of the room. Once the door was shut, Batman turned back to you.
“I got separated from the others.” You sipped more water as your mouth dried out. “And Cheshire jumped me.”
Batman stared at you. You hated that you couldn’t see his eyes. His mouth was a firm line. “Your sister?”
You swallowed hard, glancing at the door in case Artemis came in. “Yeah, she thought I was my dad, but then she relaxed when she saw it was me. We talked a little, then she disappeared with a smoke bomb and I got hit in the head.” You touched the back of your head, wincing at the lump there.
He frowned. “What did you tell her?”
“Nothing.” You shook your head only to have the pain in your head intensify. “Ouch.”
“Take it easy.” Batman examined the lump on the back of your head.
“She asked if I was on the Team with Artemis and I said yes. I asked if she was with the League of Assassins and she said yes. That was it, I didn’t betray the Team.” Your eyes widened, chest tightened.
“I know you wouldn’t. Calm down.” Batman pushed you to lay down again, moving your head so you didn’t lay on the lump. “We’re going to have to do a few scans to make sure you didn’t crack your skull. Your mother has already been called and is up to date on the situation.”
You sighed. “Damn it. I don’t want to worry her.” You closed your eyes, suddenly very tired.
“Rest now.” Batman patted your arm. You tried to relax, but a nagging memory of your father popped into your head. He laughed, saying you were very much his son, pride radiating from him. You didn’t remember when that happened.
“How long did it take everyone to find me?” you whispered, eyes still closed. Batman was still nearby, washing out the bucket.
“Twenty minutes. Why?” Batman came back to your side. You heard him set the bucket on the bedside table.
“Was I alone?” A long silence followed and you knew your answer. “Sportsmaster was with me, wasn’t he?”
Batman cleared his throat. You opened your eyes to look at him. “He was, but he ran off when Superboy attacked him. The rest of the team didn’t see him.”
You sighed. “Great. Just great.” You closed your eyes, hating your face once more.
***
Artemis glared at you from the doorway of your bedroom. At least you knew the hatred in her eyes was for you alone this time. “I can’t believe Superboy saw you with your mask off and next to Dad.”
“I was unconscious, Artie. What did you want me to do?” You shifted on your bed, staring up at the ceiling that was way too familiar for comfort. A week of bedrest was way too long.
“Wally was asking me why you look so much like Sportmaster,” Artemis exploded, throwing her arms in the air. “I told him I don’t know, because I don’t know you!”
You flinched. Her words stabbed at your heart. “It’s okay. I can explain it when I finally get off bedrest.”
“Robin’s been snooping around too!” Artemis kicked a shoe on your floor. It slammed against the broken mirror that you had placed on the wall again. The mirror crashed to the floor, breaking the rest of the glass.
“Artemis!” Paula rolled down the hall with fire in her eyes. “Leave your brother alone. He needs his rest.” She saw the broken mirror. “Clean this up now!”
Your sister stormed off. “It’s fine, Mom,” you said. Paula came to your bedside and rested her hand on your forehead. “Mom, I have a concussion, not a fever.”
“I know.” She frowned. “I don’t like that your father hit you.”
“We don’t know if he did.” You bit your lip, looking away from her. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw her eyes flash. She wasn’t seeing you again. Exhaustion washed over you, deep into your bones. “I’m tired.”
“Yes, rest.” Paula left the room. Artemis came in and cleaned up the glass. You pretended to be asleep. Your heart burned with the determination to take Jade’s advice and change your face.
***
You stared at the box of hair dye as you stood in the boys’ locker room at the cave. It took you a long time at the drug store to get up the courage to buy it, and now you had to work up the nerve to use it.
Today was your first day of freedom after the week on bedrest. The lump on your head disappeared, but you still felt a dull ache once and a while. However, you promised yourself that you would change your appearance today. The cave seemed the safest place to do that. No one was here at the moment.
Taking a deep breath, you opened the box and read the instructions. It was complicated, but you took out the different bottles. You took off your shirt.
“What are you doing?” Conner’s voice sounded from behind you.
You screamed, dropping one of the dye bottles into the sink. Luckily, you didn’t open it yet.
Conner snorted, raising an eyebrow. “Seriously? I scared you?”
“I didn’t think anyone was around.” You lined the bottles up. Blood rushed to your face, unable to look at Conner. He came over and picked up the dye box. You waited for him to say something.
“You’re going to have to do your eyebrows too or it will look strange,” Conner said, picking up the instructions.
You looked at him with wide eyes. “So you’re not going to talk me out of it?”
“Why?” Conner blinked. “It’s not like we’re doing plastic surgery or something. Hair color isn’t that big of a deal. M’gann does it all the time.”
“M’gann’s a shapeshifter.” You bit your lip. Nerves made you jumpy.
Conner grunted, shrugging his shoulders. He set the instructions down and picked up the first bottle. You smiled, glad to have the help.
***
“I’m home,” you called as you entered the apartment. You had a skip in your step. Your hair a new, shockingly different color. Thanks to Conner, the dye job turned out better than you hoped.
“Con trai?” Paula came out of the kitchen with a plate in hand. Upon seeing you, the plate dropped to the floor. “What did you do to your hair?”
“What? I like it.” You smiled when the look of anger and disappointment didn’t come over her. She was finally seeing you first. You could have danced from joy.
A deep frown came to Paula’s lips. Your joy faltered. “Wash it out of your hair now.” She pointed to the bathroom.
“It’s not going to work, Mom. I’ve already washed my hair and it’s here to stay.” You shrugged, hiding your pain behind indifference.
Artemis appeared in the doorway. “What the hell, (Y/N)?” Her eyes almost popped out of her head at your hair.
You smiled, happy when she saw you for you. It was working. “What? It’s my hair. I can do what I like.” You looked at Artemis. Her jaw was on the floor. “Now you don’t have to worry about everyone thinking I look like Dad, huh?”
“Is that why you did this?” Paula asked, taking your hand. “(Y/N), I’m proud that you look so much like your father. He was...is a handsome man.”
You wondered if she was sane. A bitter laugh escaped you as you pulled your hand away from Paula’s. “Seriously?” You looked at Artemis who was scowling. “Both of you never see me first. It’s always Dad. Don’t think I don’t see it.” You snapped at Paula before she could speak. The hurt look on her face made you hesitate, but your pain kept you going. “It’s always this flash of anger and hate before you finally realize it’s me. I’m sick of it.” You spun away to your bedroom, but Artemis grabbed your arm.
“That’s not true...” she began, but you jerked your arm out of her grasp.
“You know it is.” You narrowed your eyes dangerously at her. “Come on, weren’t you just yelling at me the other day for having my mask off and making the team wonder why I look like Sportsmaster?” Her eyes dropped. “Yeah, can’t say anything, can you?” Your voice was colder than you ever heard it be before.
Hurrying to your bedroom, you slammed the door and locked it. Your cheeks were wet with what you thought might be tears, but you told yourself it wasn’t. You didn’t care, yet your cheeks stayed wet for a long time.
***
“(Y/N), I have dinner,” Artemis whispered through your bedroom door. “It’s your favorite.” Your stomach rumbled at the thought, but you stayed lying on your bed.
“Go away.” You turned on your side to face away from your door.
Artemis sighed loud enough for you to hear. Little scratching sounds came from the door before it opened. “You’re going to eat. I don’t care.” Artemis came in. You turned to find Paula’s credit card in her hand. She used that to open the lock, a trick Jade had taught you both.
You narrowed your eyes at her. She glowered back at you. “I’m not hungry, Artie.” You laid back down and turned away from her.
“Look, I’m sorry.” She set the tray of food down on your bedside table. The smell made your stomach growl loudly. “I’m sorry I made you feel like I was ashamed of you because you were unlucky enough to look exactly like Dad.”
You turned and took the food, unable to stop yourself. “Whatever,” you mumbled between bites.
“Don’t whatever me. I’m trying to make amends.” She crossed her arms. “And I like your new hair by the way. I mean I was shocked at first, but you do look good.”
Raising an eyebrow, you eyed her as you took a bite of food. “You really think so?”
“Yeah.” She pursed her lips. “You should talk to Mom. She’s hurt, and she cleaning the kitchen to the point where nothing will be left if we don’t stop her.”
“Can I finish eating first?” You laughed, happier than you had been in a long time.
Artemis giggled, plopping down beside you and stealing some of your food. “You’re always thinking about food.”
“I’m always thinking about food? You just stole some.” You nudged Artemis, making her laugh. Suddenly, you felt she was your sister again and for the first time in a long time, you were comfortable in your own skin.

**********************************************************************
She jerked backwards, eyes widening at the sight of the thick, crimson liquid running down her arm. A shudder ran through her, throat seizing up as she tried to suck in air, her other hand coming up to rub at her arm. Suddenly it was on both hands and she stared at them in horror.
A voice called from below her, pained, but firm. “Superwoman…it’s okay. Don’t—ugh—don’t panic. It’s alright.” The voice was soothing at first, but when she looked down to find its owner, the body next to him took up all she saw, a vicious, gaping hole where his heart used to be.
She peddled backwards, stumbling to the floor, apologies falling from her lips. “I’m sor—I’m so sorry. It was just—he was hurting you and I—I didn’t mean to do this, I swear—”
The boy reached out to her but grunted in pain, hand dropping to hold his side. “(Y/N)—”
Her eyes met his once more, and he could see the tears swimming in her gaze as she whispered, “I’m sorry.” She shot from the ground, disappearing in the sky in a blur of red and blue.
He reached for her calling out, “(Y/N)!” He lost sight of her as quickly as she left, and the other two ran up to him.
“Tim!” The taller boy stopped, looking down at the corpse next to him, jaw dropping in shock. “…Oh my god. Wh—what happened?” He looked at the other. “Tim?”
He shook his head, eyes meeting the shorter one. “Bart, I need you to get to Central and find Wally and Dick and tell them to get to the cave.” Bart nodded and spun, taking off in a flash of yellow lightning.
The other boy knelt, picking him up off the ground. “Tim, what happened?”
He groaned, hand moving to hold his side once more. “(Y/N) killed him on accident.” Tim looked at him. “Conner, I can get back to the tower on my own, but I need someone to get to Jason.” He sucked in a breath, reaching up and wiping the blood from his nose though it still bled despite him. “Kori and Roy will probably be with him, but right now, we need everyone who can search.”
Conner nodded, steadying Tim on his feet before rising from the ground; he looked down at him. “Do you know where she went?”
Tim shook his head, grimace crossing his lips as he muttered, “I don’t think we’re gonna find her for a long time.” He glanced up at Conner. “Go. Now.” The boy nodded, flying off, and Tim took a few steps forward before stumbling into a wall. He heaved a sigh, picking up his transmitter from his belt.
He pushed a button, and a few seconds later, a voice came over the line. What’s going on?
Tim frowned and asked, “What’s your E.T.A. to earth?”
Eighteen hours. What happened?
Tim glanced back at the body, the puddle of blood seeming to consume it. “It was (Y/N). She… she killed someone.”
The voice on the line was silent, then it said, Superman is on his way. Call me when he gets there.
The line went dead, and Tim sighed, sliding down the wall. He lent his head back, eyes staring up at the sky, waiting for (Y/N)’s father.
***Later In The Cave***
The group stood in silence, faces molded in a mixture of shock and pain. Tim yelped as Alfred pushed on his side. “Ow shi—Alfred!”
The man hummed, wrapping the cloth around his side. “Apologies, Master Tim.” He tucked an ice-pack between the layers. “With the broken ribs you’ve got, it would be best to keep ice close. I also advise against any harsh movements.”
Tim nodded, gaze turning to the man beside his oldest brother. “Clark.”
The man looked up from the ground, voice stricken as he lamented, “I can’t hear her. She’s…completely silent…” his eyes held a deep and sorrowed pain. “I can’t hear my baby girl.”
The others listened, then Jason stepped forward, expression grim and solemn. “Tim, what exactly happened in San Francisco today?”
The boy looked over at him before dropping his gaze to the ground, sighing, “What didn’t happen out there, Jason?”
Tim shook his head, clearing his throat. “It was a routine mission, patrol the area before getting back to the tower, but Bart called and said that he saw what looked to be a meta-human going on a rampage. We all met up and started fighting, and while it took some time, we managed to get him to an abandoned warehouse complex. Turns out, he not only had super strength, but he could also make copies of himself, and when I figured out that the original was susceptible to damage while he had copies, I sent Conner, Bart, and (Y/N) to fight the copies while I found him.”
He paused, picking at his nails. “What I didn’t expect was for him to throw me into a forklift and break three of my ribs. I tried to get up, but before I could move, his hands were around my throat, and he was lifting me up off the ground.” He absentmindedly reached up, fingers brushing the purple hand-prints around his pale neck. “Everything was happening so fast, and I couldn’t get my bearings in time. My vision started to get dark, and I could hear (Y/N) shouting from behind, and the next thing I knew, I was being dropped again. When I could see and breath clearly again, I looked up, and I saw (Y/N)…I saw her…”
A hand rested on his shoulder, and he glanced up, seeing Conner nodding firmly at him. He let out a breath and said, “And I saw (Y/N) standing there, and the meta-human lying in a pool of his own blood and he had…he had a hole through his chest.”
Quiet gasps were heard around the cave, and Tim looked up at Clark. “It was just an accident Clark, she didn’t mean to do it. She was trying to save me.” The man didn’t look at him, eyes glued to the floor as he swallowed thickly, obviously thinking about what he was just told.
Jason stepped up to Tim. “Do you know where she went?”
Tim shook his head. “No, she took off before I could stop her.”
“So, you’re pretty much saying that she could be anywhere.” Everyone turned their head at the sound of Dick’s voice.
Tim nodded. “That’s why I called everyone here. We need help trying to find her.”
Dick turned to Wally. “You and Bart comb Central.” The two took off, and Dick turned to Kori. “You should take Roy and go check around hideouts the Outlaws frequent.” Kori and Roy made their way to the stairs. “Tim, you sit out and monitor everything. Conner, you can help me and Jason check Gotham. Clark…”
Dick walked over and resting a hand on his arm. “You should go home and tell Lois about what’s happened, then check Metropolis.” Clark nodded, but made no move to go, and Dick squeezed his arm gently. “Clark.” He looked at Dick. “We will find her, I promise.”
Clark nodded again, this time finding his feet; he paused as he reached them and turned to Jason. “Jason?” He turned, waiting for Clark to continue. “I don’t really have any doubt that you’ll be the one to find her tonight…” His voice soft as he asked, “But when you do, will you tell her that I’m not angry at her?” Jason nodded, and they watched Clark leave.
Dick faced them, tone quiet. “Conner, you and I can take North and East Gotham, Jason, you should take South and West.”
They nodded at his words, each moving to the exit. Tim’s voice reached them before they could leave. “Jason! Can you wait for a minute?”
Jason nodded at the others, watching them leave before moving back to Tim. “What’s up?”
Tim hung his head and whispered, “It’s my fault, Jason. I should’ve been more vigilant when I was fighting. If I had gotten up sooner, none of this would’ve happened. I’m sorry—”
A hand rested on his shoulder and he looked up; Jason stared at him seriously. “Tim, it wasn’t your fault. And it wasn’t (Y/N)’s either.” He squeezed Tim’s shoulder gently. “Okay?” Tim nodded and Jason let go, though he saw the tears in Tim’s eyes.
***
Jason crouched atop the ledge staring down at the city, a frown crossing his lips. He didn’t bother to look up at the sound of someone’s boots hitting the rooftop, or when they stopped beside him. “Have you found her?”
He snorted, eyes following a car on the busy road. “Do you honestly think I’d be up here if I had?” He glanced up, seeing Dick slightly grinning at him.
Dick lowered himself on the ledge until he sat next to Jason, legs hanging freely off the edge. The two of them simply stared out at the streets, observing the cars carrying their passengers’ home.
After a few moments, Dick asked, “Where do you think she is?”
He watched Jason shrug and murmur, “I have no idea…I’ve searched everywhere that has any kind of meaning to us and I still can’t find her.” He looked at Dick, eyes filled with trepidation. “I’m worried about her, Dick…she’s all alone out there, thinking about what’s happened, and it’s eating me up.” He shook his head, letting out a sigh. “I shouldn’t have left San Francisco earlier. I should’ve stayed.”
Dick’s eyebrows shot up at his words. “Wait, you were in San Fran earlier today?”
Jason nodded. “Spent the night with her but left in the morning.” He thumped the heel of his armored boot against the wall. “I could’ve stopped that meta and she wouldn’t have done anything.”
“You’re really torn up about her killing someone, Jason.”
Jason turned to Dick, shouting. “Of course I am!” He placed a hand against his chest. “I kill bad people because they’re evil and they deserve it. I wouldn’t want (Y/N) or any of the people I care about to follow the path that I do.” He paused, voice lowering. “(Y/N) is…a good person. She’s kind and caring and she loves everyone with everything she has. She protects those that are innocent and protects those she loves even more fiercely.”
He sighed heavily, his voice lowering to a whisper. “I’d never want her to have to think about the people she kills like I do.”
“You’re telling me you actually think about the people you kill?”
Jason let out a mirthless laugh, his gaze returning to the city. “Contrary to popular belief and what you see when you look at me, I am not a heartless killer, Dick. I know the consequences of my actions, and believe me, I think about them every moment I’m alive.” He stood and looked down at his brother. “I’m going to hit my apartment and take a nap before getting back out there.”
Dick nodded, observing him as he started climbing down the ledge; he called out to Jason. “She’s really changed you in the year you’ve been together.”
Jason snorted, “Don’t tell anyone, I’ve got a reputation to keep.” He paused, hand gripping the ledge as he replied, “ But yeah she has… and only in the best ways, Dickhead.”
“Hey!”
***
The apartment was quiet, just as he’d left it the day before, and he shucked his helmet and jacket off, placing them on the table. He bent over, undoing the laces from his boots, kicking them off before reaching up and pulling his domino mask off, raising a hand to rub the fatigue from his eyes. It was a futile attempt to delay the inevitable, and as he made his way to his room, he mentally took note of how long he needed to sleep before getting back in the field to look for her.
As he walked through the hallway, a quick intake of air sounded through the apartment, and Jason reached to his hip, pulling a pistol. He stepped carefully through the hall, checking the rooms before he came up to his bedroom. Sucking in a quiet breath, he stepped into the room, gun following his gaze as it landed on a huddled mass beside the window.
He walked silently over to it, and upon closer inspection, his eyes widened, voice laced with disbelief as he questioned, “(Y/N)?”
She raised her head, eyes red rimmed and bloodshot. “Jason?” she whispered, unsure of herself.
He lowered the gun, placing it on the nightstand before moving to her, hands grasping her upper arms. “(Y/N), we’ve been looking everywhere for you.” He shook his head. “Why didn’t you call one of us and tell us where you were?” She didn’t respond to him, simply looking down. Jason let go of one of her arms, gently cupping her cheek. “Doll?”
He felt something wet drip onto his hand, and finally, she sat up straight and stared at him. The blanket she’d been covered with fell away, and his gaze dropped to her arms. His eyes widened at the sight of the faint red smeared across her arm. “(Y/N),” He breathed.
“I kept scrubbing and scrubbing, but no matter how hard or how much I did, it wouldn’t come off.” The tears were rolling down her cheeks now, and she lowered her head. “I didn’t mean to do it Jason. I just…”
Jason reached for her, pulling her into his arms and hoisting her up. He reclined against the headboard, arms wound tightly around her. “Shh…it’s alright…”
“I killed him, Jason.” (Y/N) pulled back enough to look him in the eyes. “I kept yelling for him to let Tim go, but he wouldn’t. I could hear Tim’s heartbeat fading and I just reacted.” She gazed at her arm. “I put my arm through his chest, Jason!” (Y/N) stared at her arm as if it didn’t belong to her body, an alienated limb, then she felt herself being lifted again. “Jason what—”
He said nothing, maneuvering her into the bathroom where he sat her on the sink. She watched as he pulled a rag from the cabinet and reached below the sink for a bottle. He poured the solution into the rag, then gently took her arm, wiping it. His gaze was unreadable, but it was anything but hard; in fact, it was soft, and before she knew it, the remaining blood had been wiped away.
Jason threw the towel into the hamper and turned back to her, cradling her face in his hands. “It’s all gone, (Y/N)…it’s not there anymore.” Her eyes lowered to her arm before they rose back to his, and he pressed his forehead against hers. “You don’t have to think about this anymore, doll.”
“I killed him though, Jason.”
She felt him shake his head and he asked, “What would’ve happened if you hadn’t?” She went silent, and Jason asked again, “(Y/N), what would’ve happened to Tim if you hadn’t protected him?”
Clearing her throat, she whispered, “He would’ve died.”
“No, he would’ve been murdered.” Jason looked in her eyes. “(Y/N),you saved Tim’s life.”
“At the expense of another’s.”
Jason let out a sigh and nodded. “Sometimes that’s the only way…but (Y/N)?” She looked at him and he insisted clearly, “What you did today…does not make you a killer, and it doesn’t make you a murderer…do you understand that?”
(Y/N) blinked at him before looking away and muttering, “…You should call everyone and tell them where I am.”
Jason reached down and picked her up from the sink, flicking off the light and moving to the bed. He lowered her down before crawling under the covers beside her, pulling her to him and raising the covers to their chins.
“I’ll call later.” He pressed his lips to her forehead. “Right now, the only thing that matters is you.” (Y/N) bit her lip to keep from crying, and a moment later, Jason quipped, “Remember that time that you threw me out of a third story window?”
(Y/N) let out a watery laugh, burying her face in his chest. “You’re never gonna let that go, are you, Jason?”
She glanced up at him, and he leaned down, pecking her nose. “If I keep getting a reaction out of it, probably not.”
(Y/N) searched his eyes for a moment then whispered, “I love you, Jason.”
He nodded, pressing his lips to hers. “I love you too, (Y/N).” He curled his arms around her, caging her to his chest. “Get some sleep…I’ll be here when you wake up.”
She did as he said, tucking her head under his chin. “Promise?”
“Cross my heart, doll.”

Legendary
Summary: Imagine being the first person One recruits. You're someone who likes to work behind the curtains, so it takes a while before you meet the full team. And when you do, it's not under the best of circumstances, but it does get you face to face with Four- the guy you'd secretly been crushing on since One showed you his file.

Living in an abandoned airfield out in the middle of nowhere is not where you saw your life heading, but it was a hell of a lot better than living under the government's microscope all because they were wary of your mind. You had been picked up by the government in your late teens, your crimes being that of supplying criminals with gadgets far too advanced to be in their hands. But instead of locking you up, the government hired you to supply the good guys with technology only your mind had been able to come up with and make.
Eventually you noticed their leash on you was getting shorter and shorter, and eventually you made a run for it. And while on the run, that's when One made his introduction.
One was a genius himself, but he needed more brain power on his side to do what he wanted to do. And while helping stage a coup d'état had never crossed your mind, you couldn't help but want to when One told you all the terrible things Rovach Alimov did in Turgistan.
So after One helped you discreetly move all the money in your bank account to where he stored his apparent billions, he faked your death. It was a little trickier than he anticipated since the government was bound to make sure you were actually dead, but he accomplished it and then quickly moved you into an abandoned airfield where he set up shop.
"You're a ghost now," he says when leading you to your own trailer, "so you need a new name with no attachments and one that won't cause any attachments."
"What? Like One?" You huff a laugh.
One looks at you, expression affronted. "What's wrong with One?"
"I'm not going to be Two," you deadpan. "I'm all for staging a coup, but I suck at being a badass. I'm just the girl behind the curtain supplying you with cool toys. Might as well just call me Oz."
One opens his mouth to retort, but then hums. "Huh. Oz. I like it."
Over the months, as One solidifies his plans for what he's looking for in a team (even though he refuses to call them a team), he gets you comfortable in hand-to-hand combat and weapon's training. He whips you into shape, ignoring your whining the entire time, and surprises you after he deems you ready with an English Mastiff he saved from the streets.
You take the time to booby-trap the airfield, setting out sensors and setting up trip wires. You and One manage to get more trailers moved onto your base of operations, and in your down time you slowly start to make them livable for when he eventually recruited the others.
It's a little over a year when he catches wind of someone worthy to recruit and leaves you to do his job. It takes him a couple of days, but he eventually returns with Two- a former spy. The blonde woman had taken one look at you and clearly didn't like what she saw, and it wasn't until you offered to spar with her did she change her mind. She obviously won the match, but she saw why One kept you around and was glad to know you could take care of yourself even if you weren't going to be out in the field.
Then when One went out to recruit Three, a hitman; Four, a parkour expert and thief; Five, a doctor; and Six, a driver, Two always stayed back with you to test the new toys and gadgets you'd had in the making. You never met the others, even though One allowed you to read their files, and you were comfortable to not have been known to them. You lived right under their noses and they were none the wiser.
Six, however, was too nosy for his own good and eventually found you. Introductions were made and you ended up finding a kindred spirit in the getaway driver.
The longer Six and Two hung around you, the quicker it was for them to come to a realization- they noticing a pattern when one team member in particular was brought up. Four was insanely attractive and his accent over comms did things to you that had Two and Six making fun of you for. But One had rules in place and since he had taken you under his wing first, you felt compelled to follow them. So while you found Four attractive, pining from afar was all you'd do much to the displeasure of Two and Six who sometimes encouraged you to talk to the thief.
The ghosts are somberly getting out of the SUV, grabbing up their duffel bags and making their way towards the trailers. One hasn't said much since the clusterfuck of a mission in Italy, but as he sets his sights on one trailer in particular, he sighs.
"So are we gonna rock, paper, scissor this, Two? Someone has to deliver the news to Oz."
The blonde woman rolls her eyes. "I'll do it. Better to hear it from me than you."
The others glance around, frowning. "Who the hell is Oz?" Three asks.
One and Two share a look before he says, "Oz is the man behind the curtains and the creator of more than half the shit we use, as well as the person who keeps the base livable."
"Oz and Six were like siblings," Two then says. The others share a surprised look, especially when One quietly groans at Two's admission.
One looks at the trailer one last time before breaking off from the group, the others continuing to follow after Two. Upon stopping at the trailer door, Two raises a fist and pounds three times on it. A dog barks inside.
"So this is where Wally disappears to," Four mumbles.
"Well he should," Two replies. "Oz is his maman."
"Wait. What? Oz is a woman?"

Clad in a gray tank top, black short tights, and a black silk robe hanging open around your shoulders, you open the trailer door only to be greeted by a solemn Two, Three, Four, and Five. You flash them a hesitant smile. "Hey, guys. What brings you to my humble abode?" Wally pushes passed you and makes a beeline for Four, you rolling your eyes at your overly friendly beast. Looking around the group, you realize one face in particular is missing. Which is odd. "Where's Six?"
Three cringes, Four averts his gaze and focuses on Wally, and Five's eyes widen before her gaze darts to Two. Two sighs. "Six didn't make it. I'm sorry."
Your smile immediately drops and your breath hitches. "H-How?"
"The car skidded," Five tells you, voice sympathetic. "We hit a forklift and he was impaled. It was instant. I couldn't save him."
Your mouth scrunches up as you sniffle, determined to keep the tears at bay. "Thanks for telling me." Clearing your throat, you then nod at Four. "Can you watch Wally for a bit? I know he likes you."
"Uh. Sure."
"Thanks."
"Oz," Two calls out, stepping up into your trailer as you turn around. She catches you pulling on a pair of jeans, then shoving your feet into a pair of boots. She sighs. "Don't do anything stupid."
"Never." Reaching into a bowl by your front door, you grab a set of keys before reaching up to grab a helmet off the shelf. Then as you exit and walk around to the back of your trailer, you pull off the sheet covering a shiny black on black Kawasaki Ninja sports bike. "Tell One not to worry. I'll be back."
Shoving the helmet down atop your head, you climb atop your bike, start the engine, and take off.

When you return back home, all is quiet. One is the only one out and about, and when he sees you he salutes you with the bottle of beer in his hand. You tap your helmet to let him know you're alright and continue on driving towards your trailer- your trailer which has noise coming from the inside.
Not too upset that someone has apparently trespassed into your space, you stomp up the stairs into your trailer only to be greeted by Wally. Smiling tiredly, you toss your keys back into the bowl and set down your helmet. "Hey, handsome. Did you miss me?" You let Wally give you one kiss, cringing as his tongue swipes up the side of your face, before standing up. Then looking at your couch, you shake your head in faint amusement at Four. "Made yourself comfortable, I see."
"You have a better set-up," he grins, unapologetically. You roll your eyes at him, kicking his feet off your coffee table before taking a seat next to him. He gestures to the back of his neck while staring at yours. "You good? You didn't have that when you left."
Touching the bandage on the back of your neck, you nod. "I'm fine. Just a small tattoo."
"Really? What'd you get?" Peeling off the bandage, you allow him to see the freshly shaven patch of hair just above the nape of your neck and the number 6 tattooed there. Four hums. "Two mentioned you were like siblings."
"Yeah. He was a nosy little bastard," you say, huffing a small laugh as you relax into your seat. "He wandered up to my trailer one day, hit on me, and then when I rejected him we just settled into a sibling bond that kind of pissed off One."
"You got too close."
"We got too close and that's against One's rules," you agree. "Now I guess I can see why he didn't want us to get too personal. This feeling sucks."
"Yeah. The whole mission was fucked from the get-go, but One didn't wanna pull out."
"Of course not. We're one step closer to Rovach. Nothing will get in One's way, not even the death of one of my little ghosts."
Four quirks an eyebrow at you. "Your ghosts?"
"Duh. This might be One's operation, but you're all mine, Four. I look after you, even if you don't know I'm doing it."
He chuckles and you notice a faint blush touching his cheeks. You ignore it. "Now that you mention it, One doesn't seem like the type of person to get all our favorite snacks when out shopping and stocking our cupboards in secret."
You grin. "You're welcome." Four continues to smile before letting his attention be dragged back towards the TV. You silently yawn. "Not to be rude, but I'm gonna shower and head to bed. You're more than welcome to stay, but if you wake me up I will murder you and not feel guilty about it afterward."
"Noted."
Surprisingly Four stays, he making camp on your couch. You chuckle quietly, call Wally to bed, and bid Four a good night.
Now that the others knew of your existence, you had a constant stream of visitors. One, Four, and Five would visit on their own, and you noticed Three would tag along every now and then with Two. But the ones who lingered the longest were always Four and Five- Four with his lame jokes and boyish smiles, and Five with her thirst of knowledge for how you made some of her medical supplies.
One's in a bit of a snit, looking for a new recruit to become Seven. You offered your help, but he refused it, so you went off to work on your newest creation.
You've been tucked away in your personal hangar, too far in the zone to remember to take breaks. So it's no surprise you're startled when the hangar door is slid open.
"Time to come up for air, Oz," Four shouts. "We bring you food."
Squinting towards the too bright door, your expression brightens upon Four and Five. "My two favorite people!" You cheer. "Don't let Two know I said that though. She scares me."
Five laughs as Four tosses a greasy bag at you, you catching it and then immediately diving in. Settling down on a stool, you pull out a burger and take the largest bite you can. You groan at the taste, ignoring Four and Five's amused looks, and accept whatever fountain drink it is that Five passes you.
"So what were you working on?" Five asks. "We stopped by earlier, but you were blaring music and didn't see us."
"Mmm. Yeah." You quickly swallow the food in your mouth. "Come check this out." Wiping the burger and fry grease off your fingers, you grab a non-labeled can and gesture for Four to step closer. "Close your eyes and pucker up."
His eyes widen, cheeks heating up, and Five snorts. "Joking," you grin. "But seriously, close your eyes."
Now chuckling, Four does as you say. You grasp him by the chin and gently turn his head from side to side as you spray his face with your newest creation. "What.. the fuck, Oz," he grumbles. "What is this?"
"It's for when you go out and about. I'm tired of cameras picking up all your pretty faces and hacking into foreign servers to erase your presence."
Five frowns. "Have we been caught a lot?"
Four's eyes flutter open and you direct him to where the nearest camera is as you walk over to a bank of computers. "Not a lot, but it's more than I like." With a few clicks, you bring up the video feed from inside the hangar. Four's face on the screen is now severely distorted that it's impossible to ID him. "And now with this spray, you won't have to worry about being caught ever again."
You freeze one of the feeds so that Four can walk over and see for himself. "Holy shit. You really are a genius."
"Duh."
"Can't wait to test it out in the field," he then says. After staring at his distorted face and then touching his face for any lingering residue, he asks, "So how do I take it off?"
You freeze. "Take it off? Huh. I knew I forgot something."
This time Four freezes and Five hides her smile as her gaze darts between the two of you. "Oz. Please tell me there's a solution to getting this stuff off my face?"
"Well.."
"Oz!" Four fakes lunging are you and you yelp, laughing. A smile of his own blossoms, green eyes sparkling in amusement.
"Kidding. I'm kidding!" You walk around the table, keeping distance between you and him. "All you need is soap and water."
"You better be right."
As Four walks off towards the bathroom, Five clears her throat. The Hispanic beauty grins at you. "When are you going to cave and just get with him?"
Your smile slowly falls as you sigh. "Come on, Five. You know the rules just as-"
She scoffs. "Pinche rules. You broke with them with Six, why not with Four? We all see the way you look at each other when the other isn't paying attention."
"Look. I like Four. Okay?" You quickly glance around to make sure he's still busy. "But I- how can I start something with someone who's almost eighty percent sure the Turgistan mission is a suicide mission? Starting anything with Four will only end in heartbreak."
"Turgistan is shaping up to look very risky," Five agrees, "so it's better to grab hold of whatever happiness you can find while you can."
"Easier said than done."
One has left to hopefully recruit a Seven, it's hot as balls out, and you're in desperate need of a cool down. You have the perfect place- an above ground pool set inside the hangar that's the furthest away- but you're just missing the company. Two is a no-go because of her new shadow that comes in the form of Three, and Four is- well he's Four. You text Five, but she's busy going over some medical texts to keep her mind sharp, so you reluctantly text Four in the end.
You ask him if he fancy's a swim, much to his amusement, and then tell him to meet you at the hangar that's on the far West side of the airfield if he's up to it.
With your swimsuit on underneath a tank top and shorts, you head for the hangar. Wally walks beside you, keeping you company, tail then wagging excitedly when he realizes just where exactly it is you're going. And since the pool had been prepared earlier that morning, all you have to do is slide open the hangar door and open up the slates in the ceiling to allow a bit more light and air draft in.
There's a wooden deck surrounding the pool and Wally excitedly runs up the stairs.
"Don't, Wally. Stay!"
Steps away from jumping into the refreshing water, Wally freezes and then whines impatiently. You chuckle as you walk up the stairs yourself, you then stripping down to your bathing suit and setting up some music to play from a tablet on a nearby lounger. The music resonates from speakers hanging in the two back corners of the hangar, but it's not too loud that it'd mask any sensors being tripped around the airfield. And the second you dive into the refreshing water, Wally dives in after you.
Wally doggie paddles for about fifteen seconds before giving in and swimming over to the steps leading out of the pool, he then lounging on the top most step so he could keep his body submerged while laying his head on the deck and out of the water. You huff laugh before taking a couple of laps around the pool, then when you tire of that you climb into a floating mesh pool chair and drift leisurely.
You've made it through three songs before you sense another presence, your eyes fluttering open to the sight of Four standing at the ledge of the pool.
"I thought you were joking about going for a swim," he muses. "How'd you swing this set-up?"
"Before One started recruiting the rest of you numbers, it was just me and him here. We got into a really heated argument early on and I nearly called it quits on him, but I was just being a moody bitch and decided to distance myself before making any drastic decisions," you tell Four. "I pitched the idea of having my own space far away from him and so long as I could get it done, then I could have it."
"And you chose a pool?"
"Well yeah. One's not allowed in here so I figured I'd make my space a place where someone would want to escape to in the desert heat. I like rubbing it in his face that he's not allowed in here. Serves him right for hurting my feelings."
Four chuckles. "I'm honored then."
"You should be. The only people who know about this place is One and now you. Six knew, but he apparently took that secret to the grave." Four's expression softens a bit and you grin at him. "So are you coming in or what? It's nice and cool," you muse. Then holding your gaze, Four quirks an eyebrow at you before stripping off his shirt. Your eyes narrow in an attempt to keep them from wandering down his pale torso and he has the audacity to smirk at you. "I hate you," you mumble.
"Nah. I don't think you do." His pants are next to go and the cheeky bastard strips down to his boxer briefs before diving into the water. When he resurfaces, he smooths back his blonde hair and them swims over to you. "So what are we going to do now that you've got me stripped down?"
You snort. "Nothing, you prat. I seriously only asked you out here for a swim."
"Then let's swim." He smiles devilishly at you and your narrow your eyes. He inches closer and you start to kick your feet in order to move your float away.
"Don't. You. Dare."
"Oh. I dare." Four upends your floating chair and you squeal as he dumps you back under the water. When you resurface, you splash him. "You fucking dick."
"What?" He laughs.
You and Four then spend the next several minutes chasing after one another, splashing and dunking each other. Even Wally gets in on the fun, but he only lasts a handful of seconds before he swims back to his step.
Then when you and Four tire of the water, you both swim over to the side of the pool. You think nothing of his closeness until you pull yourself out to sit on the edge, only for him to remain right in front of you as his hands slowly wrap around to your calves. Instantly, the atmosphere around you becomes a bit oppressive and the energy between you and Four is suddenly electrified.
You gulp. "What are you-"
"Just testing a theory, love."
"Yeah? And what theory would that be?"
Four smirks as he nudges your knees just enough apart so his torso fits between them. Then with hands settled on the deck on either side of your thighs, he uses his upper body strength to push himself up so he's towering slightly over you. As you slightly lean back, you gulp yet again as you come nose to nose with him. His eyes dart over your every feature as your heart hammers inside your chest, but before any progress or objection can be made, someone else makes it for you.
"When the fuck did we get a pool?" Three's voice rings out. Wally barks in response.
You sigh in relief, Four quietly groans before dropping back into the water, and you pull your legs out so you can stand up. Then just as you've picked up a towel from one of the loungers, you see Two and Three appear at the top of the deck stairs.
"We didn't get a pool," you tell Three as you wrap yourself up. "I got the pool a while back."
"Mhmm," Two drawls. "And how convenient Four is the only one who apparently knew about it." You blush as her knowing gaze darts to the boy in question who's lazily swimming laps.
"He literally found out about it an hour ago," you tell her. "I would have invited you, but I knew Three would have tagged along."
"Hey!"
You grin at his affronted expression. "No offense. I just wasn't ready for your energy yet, but I guess the cat's out of the bag now."
"Oh. It is." Three eagerly strips down to his own boxer briefs, he cannon-balling into the pool. Immediately, he and Four start to play fight.
Two walks over to you, shaking her head as she stares down at the two squabbling men. "We work with idiots."
"Really hot idiots," you mumble.
Two turns to look at you and when you catch her gaze, you see the corner of her mouth twitch up into a smile. For some reason, seeing her amusement rather than hearing an admonishment seems to make you breath a little easier.
Fingers flying over your keyboard, you gaze darts over the several screens you have control over. Some screens are nothing but coding, while others are surveillance cameras around the airfield and traffic cams you've hacked into. You're so caught up in what you're doing that the door sliding open at your back startles you.
Immediately grabbing the gun beneath your desk, you twirl your chair around and take aim. Four and the newly recruited Seven hold their hands up. Sighing, you roll your eyes before lowering your weapon and setting it on the desk. "Really, Four? Couldn't have given me a heads up?"
"Sorry, love." The way he's smirking, you know he's not sorry at all. Seven frowns at Four's pet name for you, but you pay his reaction no mind. "Just thought I'd introduce our newest number."
"Mhm." Glancing at Seven, you offer him a faint grin. "Nice to meet you. I'm Oz."
"Seven," he says. He then glances around the room as he and Four enter fully, and you twirl back around before continuing your work. "What exactly do you do?" You hear him ask. "When One gave me the rundown of the team, you weren't mentioned."
"She and One practically built this place," Four says. "Oz is literally the man- er, woman- behind the curtain around here. If you hadn't been introduced to her, you'd have never known she was here."
Huffing a laugh, you say, "Still a bit bitter about me living under your noses for months, are you?" After punching a few more keys, you whirl back around and stand up to address Seven. "Tell One he's getting sloppy. I picked you up on three different traffic cams and had to delete your trail."
"She's also a smarty-pants," Four muses.
"And I also make the best toys," you tell Seven. "So if you need anything or want anything, run it by me and I'll do my best to get it for you. One likes to treat you all like pawns in his missions and have no connections to you, but you guys have killed yourselves to join this team. You made yourselves ghosts to rid the world of truly horrific people, so I'm going to do my damn best and take care of you ghosts."
Four grins. "We're hers, in case you didn't pick up on it."
"Don't be a wanker," you retort, snorting when he pouts at your use of his slang. "But yes, Four is right. You ghosts are mine and I take care of what's mine."
Seven chuckles quietly. "You are not someone I expected to be on One's team."
"One's rules are in place for a reason," you say, now smiling sadly. "I recently learned the hard way, but I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment." His expression falters and you sigh. "Well if you boys will excuse me, I've got a dog to feed and errands to run. I'll see you around."
Four and Seven watch as Oz gathers a few files, she then quickly taking her leave. And as soon as she's out the door, Seven turns to Four.
"What did she mean by learning the hard way? One come down on her about something?"
"Oz and Six became close- like brother and sister," he says while leading Seven out of the room. "We didn't know about her being here until One realized someone had to tell her about Six's death. Two told her the news and we tagged along. It was our first meeting."
He whistles lowly. "Talk about a shitty first meeting."
"Yeah. No kidding."
"And her being a glutton for punishment? Is that because she cares for the other ghosts or because there's something between you and her?"
Four barks out a laugh. "Picked up on that, did you?"
"Kind of hard not to."
"Yeah." Four sighs. "Me and Oz, it's complicated. We've acknowledged the chemistry, but she's also made it known that she doesn't want to break anymore of One's trust."
"And you're okay with that?"
"Gotta be, mate. Oz is.. special. She's someone I want in my life, be it a friend or something more later on down the road. I'm okay with waiting."
"You're that confident, huh?" Seven chuckles. "Good luck with that, man."
It doesn't take long for One to come up with a decent plan for the big takeover, the first part of their mission coming up in Las Vegas where the Four Generals were going to be. You had sat in the back of the room while One explained what they were going to be doing, compiling lists of outfits, weapons, and gadgets the team would be needing.
Then the day comes when the team is to take off and you follow them to the plane. You don't know why, but the idea of them going on this particular mission is giving you anxiety.
Upon arriving at the plane stairs, Three immediately walks up them and disappears inside with a barely mumbled, "See you on the other side, chiquita."
One, Two, Four, Five, and Seven linger around and you sigh as you look around at all of them. "Well I would tell you all to be safe, but I know how dumb you guys all are." Two cracks a grin as Four, Five, and Seven snicker. "So Five, please keep them in one piece until you get back home."
Five laughs. "No promises, but I will do my best."
Five then boards the plane, followed by a winking Two. Seven is still chuckling as he gives you a one-armed hug and One grumbles at all the affection going around. One follows after Seven and then you're left alone with Four.
"If we make it back alive, you and I are going out."
You scoff, shaking your head in amusement. "The rules-"
"Fuck the rules, Oz." Four steps closer to you- close enough to grasp you by the back of your head and reel you in. You gasp, but his lips land on your forehead instead of where you were momentarily fearing. "If we win, you and I are going on vacation away from One and his rules. Sound good?"
"I-" You trail off, sighing. One's rules were a bit ridiculous, but you understood why he didn't want anyone getting close. Their jobs were highly dangerous and if anyone became comprised, their significant other became compromised and the whole mission would be in jeopardy. And that was a no-no. But you were only human and living the life of a ghost was rather lonely. So against your better judgement you give in, your hands landing on Four's waist as you angle your head up to quickly press a kiss to his cheek. "Come back home to me and we'll talk about it."
Four practically beams, but before he can retort One is poking his head back out. "For fuck's sake, Four. Get your ass on the plane!"
You hadn't realized how much Six's death impacted you until the team took off again. You were fine for the first couple of hours, keeping yourself busy with Wally and doing a bit of light shopping, but then you started feeling anxious. The airfield was too quiet and you immediately started to miss Four's random drop-ins.
You started off by cleaning your trailer, then moving onto One's since he had given you permission to be in there when he wasn't. Two's trailer was off limits, Three's was a nightmare, and Five's was impeccable. You were hesitant to enter Four's trailer, but he had no problem with you in his space so you went ahead and went in. His trailer, however, was only slightly messy so you picked up his dirty dishes and took out the trash. There were a few articles of clothing scattered around on the floor, so you picked them up and threw them in the small hamper located next to his bed. Then without even thinking about it, you grabbed one of his clean shirts to later wear.
You eat dinner at a decent time and then set up in your trailer's front room with several laptops. One has a secret burner phone that he texts you updates from, letting you know when a special device is in place at the hotel the Four Generals are to be staying at the following day. And with the device in place, you're able to hack into their security feed.
The following day the plan is set into motion. You follow Two and Three's every move through the hotel, snorting at the shitty job they've done of putting on their prosthetics. You watch as Three shoots someone through the peephole of a door and as soon as they disappear inside, you get started on deleting their digital footprint that led them up to the Generals' room. You leave their appearance in and around the casino, and even doctor some footage of them during the time of the murders to give them an alibi. Then checking all camera angles outside that might have caught Seven sniping from another building, you give One the all clear.
The Las Vegas mission is a success and then your stomach drops when One informs you they'll be heading to Hong Kong. He'll be radio silent which means you'll be in the dark. You'll only know if they've succeeded via news outlets should they pick up on the coup taking place.
Two and a half days later, shit goes down.
It's almost four in the morning when every alert you have on any news of Turgistan go off. You jump out of bed and scramble for your laptops, turning on your TV. Every news station is covering the coup taking place. Your heart hammers frantically, your stomach cramps, and you're on the edge of your seat.
Then you see it. Rovach Alimov has been caught by a group of vigilantes and his brother Murat is to take his place as President after they've delivered Rovach to a village of people who all want revenge.
So with the mission successful, your only worry is whether everyone made it out or not.
You doze in and out of sleep throughout the rest of the day, shooting One a text to get in touch with you asap. Around dinner time, you then get a text message that has you laughing but also very confused.
[Your boy is relatively fine. Broken arm. Don't break his heart because I'll have to be a dick and still side with you.]
Wondering where the hell One's sudden change of heart has come from, you stare blankly at your phone until another text comes through.
[BTW, Two and Four are fucking. If I see Four's lily white ass around base, I am allowed in your pool and there's not a damn thing you can say about it.]
Now laughing uncontrollably, you decide not to look a gift horse in the mouth. You agree to his terms and then find out they should be in the following afternoon. So with more than enough time to finally get a good sleep-in, you make sure Wally has enough food and water before going to sleep now that you're not so anxious.
Hours later, when you finally wake feeling refreshed, you prepare for the team's arrival. You know that as soon as they get to their trailers you won't see them for a few hours as they decompress, so you make sure to time your little surprise perfectly.
Strategically placing speakers around the runway where the team will be unloading, you sync up a particular song in preparation. You know it'll annoy One, but the others ought to get a kick out of it.
You're watching for the plane, and when it lands butterflies take flight in your stomach. The minutes seem to drag on as the plane finally comes to a stop and as soon as the stairs are lowered, you start the song.
As everyone disembarks and slightly spreads out, you start to jog towards them as they make their way towards you. Halfway to them, you stop and spread your arms out at your sides. You scream and then whoop for their victory, and then blare the music coming from the speakers by pressing a button on the phone in your pocket. From far away, you can see Three, Four, Five, and Seven chuckling at you.
"'Cause we're gonna be legends! Gonna get their attention. What we're doing here ain't just scary, it's about to be legendary. Yeah we're gonna be legends. Gonna teach 'em all a lesson. Got this feeling that we're so sweet caring, it's about to be legendary."
Seven throws his arms up in the air, hollering, and you laugh before moving again. This time your path is directly towards Four, but you make sure to be extra careful of his arm in a sling as you meet him toe to toe. Immediately he pulls you into a kiss and you can't help but smile when you hear Five and Seven catcalling you.
As you pull back, you can't keep the smile off your face as you and Four stare at one another. Momentarily breaking eye contact with him, you pull out the phone in your pocket and stop the music. "You made it," you then tell Four.
"I almost didn't," he sheepishly admits. "Blaine saved my arse and then One nearly compromised the mission for me in the end."
Brow furrowing, you glance around at the lingering team. "Blaine?" Seven raises his hand and waves, and your eyebrows raise in surprise. "When did we start using our old names?"
"When One was about to leave your boy dangling several stories up and I made the call to save him."
"Wait. What?" You whirl on One and he sighs dramatically.
"Oh don't give me that look. See this is why I had rules in place about not getting too close," One says, pointing between you and Four, and Two and Three. "But since Two and Three are fucking, I can't exactly say anything about you wanting to get into Four's pants! Which, by the way, ew."
"Oi!" Four exclaims, but you just snort.
Leaning into Four's side so he can lay his uninjured arm around your shoulders, you look out at everyone else. Two catches your gaze, grinning. "Name's Camille."
"Javier," Three says, grabbing Camille's hand in his own. Surprisingly, she lets him.
"Amelia," Five then introduces herself.
Everyone looks at One, but he rolls his eyes. "You're all still calling me One. Now if you'll excuse me, my bed is calling my name."
As One takes his leave, your attention goes back to those surrounding you. "Y/N," you then say. Looking up at Four, you grin. "My name is Y/N."
"Hello, Y/N. I'm Billy."
"And on that note, I think we should be leaving the lovebirds alone." Javier chuckles at Blaine's statement, but nonetheless everyone takes the hint and follows after the dark skinned man.
Once everyone has given you their backs, you turn so you're practically chest to chest with Billy and gently grasp his face in your hands. You pull him into a kiss, pecking his lips once, then twice, and chuckle softly. "I've been wanting to do that since One showed me your file."
"Yeah? Anything else you've wanted to do?"
"Oh. Loads," you muse, smirking, and nipping his bottom lip. "But we're not getting up to that until Five gives you the okay."
Billy groans. "You're such a tease."
"And don't you forget it." Hooking your arm through his, you then start dragging him towards the trailers. "Now come on. Wally's missed you. You're sleeping in mine until my anxiety goes away."
"Aw you missed me?"
"Yeah, yeah. Don't let it get to your head."
