"From Pet to Threat" - This just happened to me AGAIN and after 10+ years in this biz, I’m sick of having to get over it in silence for fear of being blacklisted, or labeled as “difficult to work with” because I chose to be open about my working experience. I won’t go into details, as this isn’t meant to be that kind of post, but I want to share this research because the “Pet to Threat" phenomena keeps happening to me and so many of my peers, particularly over the last few years here in LA. It’s truly an abusive cycle that repeats for far too many people in the workplace, but especially and aggressively for Black women in the entertainment/media industry. So many of us work extremely hard from a place of love, peace and genuine passion for our crafts. We choose to put our prowess out there, hoping that it’ll be reciprocated with that same authenticity by our leadership/mentors/peers, only to be undermined and vehemently devalued in favor of this insistence for power and control at every turn. I’ll never understand the need to prioritize pettiness & ego over doing the right thing for another team member or putting the best, most collaborative work out there for your company. What’s the point of hiring an expert or someone with big potential, just to diminish them? I'm tired of entering spaces I was promised were full of golden potential and stability, only to have to abruptly leave that space a short while later, lest endure unsafe + toxic working dynamics if I choose to brave it. The feelings of shame, guilt and confusion that come after are all too familiar, and yet they never get any easier to deal with. Constantly being in an anxious place of trying to figure out what went wrong and changing my approach, while the world you left couldn’t even be bothered to think twice about you, feels like a losing game. Why even play anymore? I'm only left jobless with no prospects, broke, and burdened with heavy feelings of sadness that I feel really dumb for having. Because it’s just a job, right? There was a heavy pause before someone spoke. It was that haughty Slytherin boy who had harassed that Kneazle and Poppy back in fifth year. MC had never bothered to learn his name. "Um, professor, not to be rude, but there doesn't actually appear to be anything here," he sneered, and a Ravenclaw girl by his side snickered loudly. What in Merlin's name were those two doing in this class, anyway? Seeking to torture harmless creatures for sport, no doubt.

"Perhaps not to you, Mr. Parkinson, but I'll wager there's at least one person here who can identify the magnificent creatures before us," Professor Howin replied, looking at the rest of the class expectantly.

"Thestrals," MC answered, instantly.

Professor Howin smiled at her, nodding her approval, though there was was a tinge of sympathy in her eyes to accompany it.

"Indeed! As many of you will be aware, Thestrals can only be seen by those who have witnessed death. Of course, that has earnt them a rather negative reputation..." Professor Howin went on to speak of how Thestrals had unfairly cemented their place in wizard folklore as harbringers of misfortune. Sebastian listened with his arms folded, a small frown on his face.

"You really don't like Thestrals, do you?" MC stated more than asked, leaning her head towards his ear.

"I don't dislike them. They just...remind me of what I've lost, that's all. The very concept of them is macabre," he replied.

"But they're such gentle creatures," she insisted, though she soon realised that her timing was rather questionable when Professor Howin began tossing raw steaks into the clearing. The Thestrals descended upon them with gusto, and the 'unsighted' in their class let out gasps of fear and amazement as the the meat seemingly began to levitate and then vanish before their eyes.

Sebastian's lip twitched, and he looked at her with dry amusement. "Ah, yes. Look at them ever so gently ripping apart those steaks."

She rolled her eyes and swatted him on the shoulder, causing him to chuckle.

"What is even the point of this? Most of us can't even see the damn things anyway," Parkinson muttered irritably under his breath. He looked around the clearing before his eyes alighted on another, much more visible form of entertainment.

He sauntered over to MC and Sebastian, a gleam in his eyes that she very much did not like the look of.

"Sallow, you can see them, right?" Parkinson asked in an exagerated whisper, practically pushing her aside in the process.

Sebastian frowned. He had no patience for his housemate at the best of times. "Just what exactly are you getting at, Parksinson?"

"Is it true that your parents got themselves killed playing around with a muggle contraption?" Parkinson probed, lowering his voice even further. She saw Sebastian tense and felt a wave of apprehension overcome her.

"Did your uncle go in an equally tragic way? Perhaps he tripped and fell on his garden shears outside that quaint cottage of yours?" Parkinson continued with a cruel smile, his words sickly. MC was equal parts shocked and outraged by his brazenness.

Sebastian hadn't reacted yet, but she could sense the warning signs: the darkening in his expression and the twitch of his fingers towards his wand. She, however, acted first. Without a word, she marched over to Parkinson, wand forgotten, and punched him square in the face.

She heard (and felt) a rather satisfying crack before he stumbled backwards onto the floor, clutching his nose. The Thestrals bellowed, spooked, and fled from the clearing in a rush of hoofbeats and leathery wings.

"Wh - what the hell?!" He spluttered with outrage, but the heat of his accusation was largely undone by his nasally voice, now thick with blood.

"Muggle enough for you?" She spat, glaring down at him. She was acutely aware of Sebastian's eyes on her back and looked over her shoulder to see him staring at her with eyes wide and mouth agape.

Professor Howin pushed her way through the circle of students that had formed around them. "And what, exactly, is going on here?" She demanded, glaring daggers at them both.

Parkinson jabbed an accusatory finger up at MC, his other hand still clutching his streaming nose. "This lunatic attacked me!"

"Only because he was saying some truly vile things," she retorted, her temper rising again. She obviously hadnt hit him hard enough.

"Enough!" Professor Howin shouted, her voice firm. "Both of you will serve detention with me for a week. I will not tolerate such beastly behaviour in my class."

"What? Why me?!" Parkinson spluttered.

Professor Howin looked down at him with a withering look. "Because I have no doubt, Mr Parkinson, that you did in fact say some rather vile things to earn that broken nose."

Sebastian snorted with laughter, and a few other students couldn't stifle their giggles. Behind his hand, Parksinson's face turned even redder. The Ravenclaw girl dutifuly arrived at his side, attempting to hook her hand under his elbow, but he shook her off impatiently. He staggered to his feet and glared at MC and Sebastian before he marched away, muttering a stream of curses.

With the subject of their lesson now notably absent, Professor Howin promptly called an end to the class and they began to trapse back to the castle. Sebastian and MC walked together, shoulders brushing.

"It was very good of you to defend my honour like that," Sebastian remarked. "That punch was much better than anything I could have come up with."

"Yes, well, I've never been able to stand that prat. Been itching to do that since last year," she replied, flexing her now aching hand. She'd apparently managed to injure herself in the process.

She sucked in a surprised breath when Sebastian gently cradled her injured hand in his own, running his thumb soothingly over her stinging knuckles. She looked up, her eyes meeting his.

"I'll be sure to find a way to express my gratitude,"  he commented, eyes twinkling with mischief in a way that made her heart flip. An abundance of scenarios came immediately to mind as to just how he could thank her, but she buried those thoughts deep.

"You really are amazing, you know that?" He continued, looking at her with such sincerity that her mind struggled to form words. He was so close, and his lips looked incredibly soft.

But then Sebastian's eyes became unfocussed as he clocked something over her shoulder and he smirked, releasing her hand and taking a step back.  "Watch out, I think your number one fan is on their way."

"Wha - ?" She didn't get to finish before something small and solid collided full speed with her waist, forcing the air from her lungs.

"Oh, MC, that was simply marvelous! I wish I had your courage; I would have done that a thousand times over by now," Poppy enthused, hugging her tightly.

"It was my pleasure, Poppy," MC replied, still catching her breath, for more reasons than one.

Well, I was drawing this like a year ago, it was supposed to be for a character sheet for a RP group, boarding school for girls, something like that.

In this AU Misaki was a bastard child, and she was sent away bc of that, she was unwanted.

Nowadays I wanted to recreate this AU with Alfred haha. Like, Al's family in financial problems, the way to save the economy a little is to marry the bastard daughter so Misaki's father could give Al a place on one of his business to work and inherit , a little humiliating.

Neither Alfred nor Misaki want this marriage and only cooperate for the good.

Misaki just wants to go back to Japan with her mother. She was forcibly taken away for her father, physically abused by him, and became the family maid.

Misaki was used just to obey men, though she hated and hated them.

Time later, Misaki's father expects a child from the couple so the pact is completed, Misaki doesn't want to, of course.

Alfred has pity for her, neither of them were happy, and he did his best to shield Misaki from his father's harsh words even if it could cost him the stability of his family.

One day Misaki received a letter, her mother came secretly to the city, She was at the port, it was an opportunity to escape.

What would happen if her father found out? What would happen to Alfred if she leaves? Would her father chase them to Japan? It was a hard decision.

it really depends on the situation. if there was someone he had to protect, he'd fight. otherwise, he'd run. usually, though, its neither; he'd freeze.

he used to keep collections of all of the poems he wrote growing up. that collection is long gone now, though. it used to be a symbol of growth to himself, showing how far he's come. it was bittersweet at first, but now he doesn't think about it.

what is your oc's greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it?

If anyone asked him, he'd say his greatest wish would be to protect his friends and the one he loves, giving them eternal peace and joy.

While this is one of his wishes, and he would give his life for it, it is his second greatest wish.

zachariah -> no, not at all. it's very easy for him to turn his back on someone, considering his lack of close relationships. he's definitely been backstabbed before. if he has something to gain, he'll betray someone in a heartbeat.

definitely depends on the situation and who is involved but for the sake of not being Complicated?? yes. quick to violence but also he's very methodical about it. never goes Too far - considering most of the time it's about focusing on getting information from people, and theyre no use to him dead. so he has to be very specific and purposeful in what he does and how. very fun to watch though [:

he's well in his 40s now, so all he really wants is to just. settle down. he's been on his own for so long now and its starting to get to him a little bit. a lot actually. he's having a horrible time!!! he just wants to love someone and be loved. he wants a family. he wants to see his own family again. he's not gonna be particularly drastic about it. it'll happen when it happens. but he is gonna be very sad about it the whole time.

he LOVES being outside. he's an artist so on his days off he will just go out somewhere that looks nice and do so many sketches of everything he sees. it helps him relax, and keeps his brain from screaming at him for a bit. one of the few things that kept him sane back at the corps.

OH OF COURSE. ive said this in another ask before but he is actually super nice and caring and gentle, when he lets people get to know him. anyone he works with only ever gets to see his coldness + hard focus on the job at hand and nothing else. they all assume he doesnt care about people, only the money at the end of the job. and while that is kind of true, he also cares SO much about the people he's protecting, whether he's getting paid or not. unless it's rich people/corpo assholes in which case. well he'll still do the job but he wont be happy about it.

🎁 PRESENT - what types of presents would they be most happy to receive? are they good at gift giving?

honestly just give him some food and he will grow on you like moss. food is good. he will eat literally anything. it's been years since he's gotten gifts for anyone so he will kind of cry about it a little bit. maybe.

as for gift giving,,, he hasnt done that in SO many years so he's. a little rusty. but thats what adds to his charm i think. because no matter what he gets you, you can see just how much thought he put into it. and that is so. So important to me

Short summary: her answer to violence is "yes and no"; Kyana's fears are kind of existential; local mage does not want to be perceived in any way possible.

👊 PUNCH - are they quick to violence?

She's violent, but I wouldn't say she's quick to violence. She does need it to be justified, at least in her own eyes, so if something can be settled through persuasion/intimidation, she'll do that. She'll also go through a character's entire dialogue tree, squeezing out every possible bit of information, even though she'd made up her mind about fighting them about five minutes ago. There have been several points in the game so far where she'd pretend to consider someone's offer even though she knows she's going to fight them, just so she can have the full picture and further proof that she was right in killing them.

I think she got a lot less trigger-happy after Redcliffe, because between Jowan and Connor and Zevran, it's gotten a lot harder for her to dehumanize whoever's on the other side of her staff. (she spared all of them btw, and then one more blood mage in the Tower)

🕷️ SPIDER - what is their biggest fear? do they have any irrational / mundane fears?

I think her biggest fear kind of came true already. Before DAO, all of her fears could be traced back to the fear of losing her comfortable life in the Circle (she had it a lot better than most other mages), and not only did she lose it, it was destroyed. It was not just taken from her, it was metaphorically thrown on the ground and stomped to bits. There's literally no part of her Circle life that survived the events of DAO unaltered, including herself. That leaves her in a weird position where the worst thing she could possibly think of already happened to her, and after Broken Circle her entire character arc is basically "what now?". I guess you could says she's kind of afraid of the future, because she just... doesn't know how she's going to go about things once the Blight is over. (it does get better; she finds a purpose in her new role as Warden-Commander and starts a relationship with Zevran, and the future becomes promising enough that she's willing to fight the Calling itself to keep it)

On a smaller scale, after being trapped in the Fade by Sloth, she has a fear of falling asleep for a while; she has to take potions that Morrigan makes for her to fall asleep. She also has panic attacks where all of a sudden she feels like maybe she's still in the Fade and everything around her is a part of Sloth's trap. That does go away eventually, but where I'm currently in my playthrough (Sacred Ashes) it's still very much a problem.

🙈 SEE-NO-EVIL - whats a side of your oc that they don't want to show other people?

Honestly, everything I've talked about so far? Kyana strikes an imposing figure when you're not reading too deep into her intentions, and she really doesn't want anyone to know what she's actually thinking, because on the inside it's just a lot of fear and anger and she's just... making it work, somehow. She also tries to not let people know how little she actually knows about anything that isn't magic, like money or relationships or how to actually use a map. Whenever her ignorance does show, she does her best to cover it up or to insist that she's right even though she's clearly not.

Angular and lime green. Her eyes are bright, alert, and fairly expressive, but there's not anything too unique about them.

Darcy is a terrible liar. Her brain moves too fast for her to string together normal sentences, most of the time— and a habit of drastically overexplaining when she's saying something untrue makes it all too easy to catch her in the act. It makes her nervous to have to lie to people, so she avoids it whenever she can.

That kind of thing isn't entirely impossible. It's hard to believe that ghosts could exist, but Darcy isn't inherently in disbelief of them.

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Feeling hopeless or useless gets to Darcy badly. She does her best to deal with the situation she's in and be worth something to the people around her, so any sense of failure hits her hard. It's common for her to take way too much responsibility onto herself and blame herself for things that are far out of her control.

😭 CRYING - what makes them cry? do they cry easily?

She's a fairly easy crier, but not overly so. Anything that involves other people getting hurt doesn't sit well with her, so she's often found fighting back tears after a particularly intense battle.

Not at all. Darcy dislikes violence and seeing people in pain, so even though she's perfectly capable in combat with Oracles, she'll rarely resort to violence outside of those fights. The only way it might happen is if she's threatened and has no other option.

The sheer speed at which Darcy functions makes her a little difficult to deal with. Her brain is always moving a mile a minute, meaning that she's always five steps ahead of any interaction she has. Many people find her nervous behavior, non-stop activity, and constant mental restlessness irritating to be around.

She's the oldest child in a large family, and all of her siblings are much younger than she is. She felt a lot of pressure to provide for everyone, which is what let to her joining the Diviners. However, she's had next to no contact with her family since doing so, and she only reaches out to them to send a portion of her paychecks. It's unclear exactly how she feels about any of them.

Flight, usually. When she feels threatened, it's reflex for Darcy to keep moving. Thus, she's far more prone to fleeing a tense situation than staying to fight— or at least, not stopping until she can figure out what she's going to do to save herself.

She tends to be much too restless and filled with mental energy to get enough sleep. It takes a complex calming-down routine to ensure a proper night's sleep, one she often has no time for.

👁️ Chiasa's eyes are light blue. They're not super striking unless people actually look her in the eye, although I guess they're a little distinctive with her father being mixed race.

🤥 Chiasa is a good liar, although it's a survival tactic. She's learned to cover up a lot of tells, although she still grips her own hand or anything she happens to be holding, and her expression might drop for a second.

👻 She doesn't really believe in ghosts, but is somewhat spiritual.

💢 Chiasa tends to worry about those around her, and that might get annoying even if her intentions are good. Also, for a long time, while injustice infuriated her, she wouldn't speak up or try to divert all attention away from it.

👨‍👩‍👧 Chiasa's relationship with her parents was complicated. She and her father had a great relationship, but he was pretty attached to the status quo, which bothered her. He also died prematurely because he was poisoned by his rival, Snow. Chiasa's relationship with her mother was rocky because she was the more hardened of the two, always criticizing her hedonistic tendencies and inaction, and hid a whole side of her she never found out about until years after her death. Chiasa has three adult children who she loves dearly; aside a hiccup with her son concerning his bio dad, they all get along well with her, and a young nephew who she also helped raise. She does have a twin sister, Quinta.... While they were close when they were young, Quinta's grown into a pretty cruel person and their relationship is souring.

💤 For the most part, she sleeps pretty well, but there are occasions when her anxiety gets the best of her. First, she usually tries chamomile and relaxing music. If all else fails, she takes a sleeping pill.

🍟 Sometimes. She probably has ways to have food without cooking, but she enjoys it anyway. It's a way to stay close to her father and she wants her nephew to know how great "real" food is.

🍧 She still has the ribbon that distinguished her as a baby, and a locket her mother gave her. One of the images inside is Lucy Gray, but Chiasa has no idea how her mother acquired that kind of footage. The only reaction to her losing the latter is worrying if it was dusted for prints.
