the thin black leather weaved around your hand like it’s known the accessory for years now. as you showed the group, your cheeks reddened and your eyes widened, as the guy who flirtatiously introduced himself to you stepped up. ugh, you should have known. “oh, yeah!” he yelps, stepping forward, and hope over to give you a high five, which you timidly reciprocate. “you’re freaking her out, hangyul,” seungwoo scolds the boy, who pouts in response. “thanks for being a party pooper, hyung. anyways, y/n, meet me at the terrace tonight at 7. sharp. I’ll be waiting.” and with one more wink and a smirk, hangyul slips off down another hallway. pretty soon, you leave the group of boys, heading back into your own room. hangyul, you think. the name’s quite nice if it weren’t for the fact that his glare felt like a predator watching its prey. you only know what that look can lead to because as surprised as people usually get when you talk about it, you’re not a virgin. when you tell people that, the first thing they say is, “really?”, as if you admitted to something crazy. you’re in college, and your parents aren’t on your ass 24/7, and you’re also a functioning teen with raging hormones; it was going to happen eventually. but, just because you’ve lost your virginity, you definitely weren’t a sex-crazed person. you knew your limits, and in short, didn’t get much sex because, well, school and your future’s also been a more important priority (“as it should be,” you recall telling soobin when she tried to drag you to the club one Friday night... of course, you won that night and were binge-watching shows whilst she was out and about.) but even so, you’re very aware of what that look can lead to, and you don’t want to smash someone you will be working with, especially since you’ve just met. yeah, he was a good-looking guy, and you’re damn sure he knows it. his piercing gaze is what you see when you bounce onto your bed and shut your eyes and you let out a frustrated groan before you check the time. it was almost 7; the dark hours of the night came much faster than you liked. you took the leather bracelet with you, which you had tightly clenched in your palm when you returned to your room, as you left to the terrace. you wanted to return the piece of jewelry in case he’d wanted it back or something- you certainly didn’t want to keep it. you reached the terrace a few minutes after 7 and found hangyul standing with his back facing you, and his hands in his pocket. at the sound of your footsteps, he turned around. the wind blew threw his grey-dyed locks, and the moonlight reflected upon them, creating a halo-like effect. “ah, y/n, you’re late. but I guess better late than never, am I right?” he chuckles and shuffles closer to you until his face is inches away from yours. your eyes flutter at his sudden proximity and he scoffs, “why’re you nervous, princess? never been this close to a guy before?” who does he think he is, you think and you step back, squinting at him, irked. “no, I just like to keep my distance, that’s all,” you start. your outburst catches hangyul off guard but you continue anyway. “here’s your bracelet, pal,” you give it to him and he slips it back on right away, before saying, “it’s a shame you picked me, then.”

your eyebrows scrunch up at his remark. “what do you mean?” hangyul gives you one final smile before turning back towards the sky and replacing his hands back into his pockets. “you don’t know what I do, do you?” you shook your head, and responded, “no, I don’t, but the way you said that... makes me curious.” “I’m sure you are familiar with a... femme fatale, right?” he says. “a female who seduces people and fucks them up, for lack of better words,” you explain and his eyebrows go up. “wow, you know your stuff,” he praised, and you relaxed a bit. “yeah, I’ve seen a few characters like that in movies and stuff, so I am familiar with it.” hangyul’s smile is small as he says, “well, my job on this team is similar, to say the least. I’m the homme fatale of this team; the goal of this job is to get as close I can get to my targets, just so I can get enough information out of them, to hand over to our clients to use against them. how I get close to them, well, I’ll leave that to your imagination,” the wind picks up in temperature and speed, and you shiver. seeing this, hangyul, who was clad in a leather jacket, slid said article of clothing off his shoulders and draped it over you instinctively. “thanks,” you mumble, and you’re so glad it’s dark out because you feel your face getting a bit hot. “no problem. listen, if you don’t want to do this job, I get it. I won’t force you into doing anything you don’t want to do. I can talk to seungwoo and maybe he can find something else for you to do if you’re not comfortable with the idea. so before you make any sort of decision, I wanna give you some time. I understand that working with me, especially with the job I have, you may get uncomfortable easily. I mean, it’s not hard to notice how you’ve kind of tensed up since I mentioned the details. forget that, you look uncomfortable around me, and we haven’t even seen each other for a day.” you bite the inside of your cheek and keep your gaze on the ground. you sigh, before looking back at him, “it’s nothing, honestly. I just... it takes me time to warm up to someone. I guess you can say I never really act like myself around someone until I’ve had a better understanding of who they are, and I think they have a better understanding of who I am. so, if I made it seem like I don’t like you, that’s not the case at all. yeah, I’m slightly uncomfortable, but I’m genuinely like that with most people I meet for the first time.” hearing you speak up, the corner of hangyul’s mouth lifts up slightly. “that’s good. at least now I know you don’t hate me. but, regardless of what you say I’ll give you a few days. sleep on it, come to a decision and then let me know. and until then, stay warm, sugar.” his tongue runs along his lower lip before he leaves you in the terrace, his jacket still resting warmly against your body. 

you go back to your room and shut the door. god, you think, you must’ve made a wrong first impression on him. well, to be fair, you did find his actions, uhh, violating. maybe it showed on your face. you feel your heart drop slightly and you feel the anxiety rise in you. great, now you feel bad. “why do things have to be so complicated?” your voice becomes muffled in your pillow, as you press it against your face and exaggerate a whine. it takes you a few moments to think about it. seungwoo told you that who you used to be won’t matter in this job. nor will whatever you do in this job affect your future life. confusion fogged your head, and you didn’t know what to do. the only thing you could hear was hangyul telling you to think about it before coming to a decision. then, your vision started to blur before everything went completely black. 

you saw a nightclub; neon lights and the smell of booze quite fresh in the air, and sounds of people around you mixed terribly with the bass of the music. through the dancing drunken youth, against the bar counter sat two familiar figures. one of them was hangyul, who had taken down a shot of tequila, with a pretty girl securely wrapped in his free arm, his hand how caressing her waist and next to him, was you. you looked almost unrecognizable, but you knew it was you, it had to be. your hair was done all nice, and you were in a shimmery, gold mini dress, and heels. you seemed to be drunk, by the way your head was moving, struggling to stay steady. then you turned around and saw your gaze fixated in your direction, and a small smirk painted your red lips. you got out of your seat and walked through the sweaty crowds of people, only to balance yourself on the shoulders of some guy, and before anything could be done, you kissed him square on the lips. one thing led to another, and you managed to drag the boy into a corner, where you climbed on top of him, your lips now on his neck. things were getting hot and heavy, and before anyone could take it a step further, the boy froze. why? because the girl who was giving him a good time stopped to press a gun against his abdomen. “give me the syringes you have in your pockets, like a good boy,” you whispered against his ear. his shaky hands reached into his pockets and pulled out the drug-filled instruments then placed them in your free hand. “very good, baby. now that I have evidence against you, and there is a video recording of this being made, I’m going to make this very clear,” you start off, your thumb running across his quivering bottom lip. “you don’t want to ruin daddy’s reputation when he finds out this is what you’ve been using the tuition money for, right? he thinks he’s sent his son to a fine, foreign university, when really, he’s here blowing that money on prostitutes and drugs.” the boy shakes his head no, and the smirk appears once again on your smeared red mouth. “then take this pretty little face of yours, and move away to a different city. or country, I don’t give a fuck. but step away from mr. park’s daughter. he’s caught on to your little act, and if he finds you around his daughter again, remember the gun is only here, but I won’t hesitate to shoot next time. got it?” the boy stutters out a response before you give him a sickeningly sweet smile and then whisper, “now, shoo.” 

you sit up, breathing heavily in the room. you blink rapidly and realize it was all a dream, but man, were you a badass or what? you feel this adrenaline rush through your veins, and it feels so fucking good. this is all it took? a dream to convince you that you wanted to take this job? apparently, it was more than enough because when the next day rolls around, and you’re looking for hangyul, you find him once again on the terrace the next night. you clear your throat, and hangyul turns around, a quizzical look in his eyes. taking a deep breath before  releasing it, your gaze meets his before you say, “I’ve come to a decision, and yes, I’ll take the job.” hangyul’s eyebrows go up in surprise, and before he has a chance to express anything, you say, “I made this decision on my own, and yeah, I’m aware of any danger it could put me in, but I’m willing to try it out. for the fun of it.” hangyul laughs at this, before nodding, “alright, princess. welcome aboard.”

The 100 episode 6x01: Sanctum

I have mixed feelings about this episode. I'm very glad that I got to see this and 6x02 together, since 6x02 was amazing. 

Season premieres on The 100 are rarely among my favorites of the season (and in season 1 and 4, were the weakest of the season), except for season 5. Season 2 premiere was also pretty strong. Here’s how I’d rank them:

Season 5 (Eden) 9/10

Season 2 (The 48) 8.5/10

Season 3 (Wanheda, Part One) 7/10

Season 6 (Sanctum) 6.5/10

Season 4 (Echoes) 6/10

Season 1 (Pilot) 4.5/10

First to get it out of the way - the things that bothered me about this episode:

So, Shaw is another black guy who got Killed First, and Zaven got Clexaed. Was this really necessary? JRoth says it was because Jordan Bolger got a role on another show, but They could have left him cryo-frozen for some time until Jordan finished his other obligation, like they did with Kane/HIC, who also now has a major role on another show.In any case, killing him off in the premiere not long after he and Raven had sex for the first time is a really lame old trope. And I wasn't even particularly invested in that relationship or his character, but it's such a waste after he was introduced in season 5, let's face it, pretty much just to be Raven's love interest and finally give her a good relationship.

I am glad that the show is following up on the things that happened in season 5 and that everyone is talking about their issues with each other. For them, it happened yesterday (I am just going to ignore the 125 time jump, since it practically didn't exist for any of the characters other than Monty, Harper and Jordan, and the people of the new planet).  And I was in favor of characters not forgiving Clarke immediately, before I saw this episode. However, the way they did felt so forced and unnatural. Murphy's remarks made no sense, as if he forgot or re-wrote all of seasons 1-4. Not only was he hypocritical, but I don't even know what he was on about. Clarke's 5th chance? What?? Does he mean all the times when she saved them? Did he confuse Clarke with, well... himself? Shaw felt particularly OOC. It's like JRoth wanted random characters to blame Clarke and deliver speeches about morality and redemption to her, and didn't care who it was, or as if Shaw was a stand-in for Raven, Sure, it makes some sense he's angry she gave them up, but to that extent and in such a personal way? Especially since we don't see him showing anger over the fact that Echo wanted to murder him? Or that Raven at one point was OK with Echo murdering him? The latter would have actually been more of a reason to feel hurt personally, since they already had some kind of a relationship up to that point, and he had helped her. But he was not Clarke's friend - she did betray her friends when she sided with McCreary: Raven, Murphy, Emori - but Shaw was nothing to her. Their only interaction in S5 was when he was one of the people (together with McCreary and Diyoza) who had her captured and tortured and threatened her daughter.

Echo lecturing Bellamy about forgiveness made me roll my eyes. Is this an even worse line than her season 5 line about finding each other in a cage? "Who knows that better than us". Err, I don't think "I did so many horrible things to you, and you forgave me (after being stuck with me for years in close quarters and with just 5 other people and I tried to make you forgive me for 3 years)" is such a great selling point or a positive thing about a relationship. And no, Bellamy doesn't have to forgive Octavia. I think he will eventually, but it's certainly not an obligation or Octavia's right, or anyone's right. No one has to forgive anyone. It's entirely due to the person who was hurt/wronged. Nor is "well, you forgave other people who hurt you, so why not that other person?" a good argument. Also, did she forget that he only forgave her after 3 years? Octavia threw him into a fighting pit (not to mention everything else she did) just a few days ago (obviously I'm not counting the cryo-sleep time). Their relationship is also complicated and different,, Bellamy probably has a time dealing with what his little sister has become and didn't expect that from her.

On the plus side:

The visuals are amazing, and everything about the new planet moon is really interesting. Including the setup for the next episode, with all the mysteries of the new planet, including the past of the people from Eligius, and the  psychosis that first overcame Emori. I love the bright colors - they feel both hopeful and fun, and psychedelic and sort of disturbing. For once, it's great to see a post-apocalyptic drama that doesn't have muted colors and dark cinematography.

Jordan is lovely - it's great to have an optimistic, innocent character, as a contrast to all the damaged, angry people, and he also obviously has many capabilities worthy of his father.

All the callbacks to season 1 were fun., especially Murphy playing the role of season 1 Octavia. Also, Bellamy telling Clarke that others will come around felt like a callback to their season 4 scene where Clarke was comforting him and telling him that Octavia would come around and forgive him.

Jackson was so excited to realize he and the other humans are "aliens" now, LOL.

Even though it was awkward in execution, I generally like the fact that they're dealing with everyone's issues, guilt and resentment from season 5. Clarke and Octavia are both set up to have great arcs. Abby and Miller also deal with guilt. There are so many interesting relationships between people who need to sort out their issues: Bellamy and Octavia, Abby and Raven, Octavia and Abby, Bellamy and Clarke...

I think Abby has a very interesting storyline now - trying to stay on the wagon and not relapse into addiction and trying to do better and make up to Raven, and her relationships with both Raven and Octavia will be interesting to watch. Kane might not really have a story of his own now, but, contrary to what many think, it would have sucked if he had died now, with how Abby felt guilty over letting him down and then tried everything to save him.

The scenes between Abby and Raven were really strong. Raven is very hurt and angry and unforgiving - of Clarke, but most of all of Abby, her substitute mother figure who really let her down and hurt her in season 5, in ways that reminded her of her biological mother. Neither of them beat around the bush, and this relationship will be interesting to watch.

Octavia scenes were amazing. I really don't get those stans of hers who justify everything she did, but I do appreciate her more and more as a great character. She acted exactly the way I'd expect her to act - angry, confrontational, unable to apologize and admit to her mistakes. While Raven is refusing to forgive, Octavia is refusing to say sorry to anyone. We saw at the end of last season that she feels guilty, and she wanted to have a big heroic redemptive death, but she didn't get that, and now she has to work harder for that redemption in the way she isn't used to - to try to really change, accept responsibility, admit mistakes and change her way of dealing with things. She'll have a long way to go and a lot of character growth to do. Octavia talked about Kane's past, but Kane did acknowledge his mistakes, almost 7 years ago, and changed and learned from them, something Octavia needs to do.

Niylah waking up Octavia after explicitly being told not to was funny - it's not a great thing to do, but I could have guessed she would, with her huge crush on O.

I'm glad that Bellamy is not forgiving Octavia easily. I think their relationship had been pretty dysfunctional way before season 5, and that she treated him like crap way before season 5 (including that time she chained him and beat him bloody because she needed a punching bag for he pain, and after that, it was still somehow all about her having to forgive him for an entire season...) so I don't want them to make up immediately. That relationship needs to be changed and reinvented, and Octavia has to change, and learn how to  treat both Bellamy and others in a different way, before they can be reconciliation.

The Bellarke moments were great - especially the radio calls conversation. It's clear that this is definitely not the last time they talk about that: that plot point has been brought up since the beginning of season 5. It took the whole season for Bellamy to learn about them, after Clarke was too embarrassed to tell him. Now she knows he knows - and it was cute to see the panic on her face when she thought he had heard all that she was saying (and we never heard all the things she said during those 6 years, so who knows what else she said!), and then the way he used a joke to lower the tension and let her off the hook. But we know from the trailer that both the radio calls and the fact she left him behind to die in 5x09 would be brought up. Yes, he has been forgiving and supportive of her since he found out the truth about those radio calls - his real problem was that he thought Clarke left him because she didn't' care, so learning that it was the farthest thing from the truth changed everything - but that doesn't mean he has fully forgiven her in his heart. He still wants to understand how exactly she feels about him, and they have so many issues to discuss.

And just look at that plAtOnIc chemistry:

I generally don't mind the Becho stuff, which continues to be along the same lines as season 5: no matter how forced those scenes feel, they're very easy to ignore, since their one-on-one interactions take up about 30 seconds of screentime (which could as well been written by some computer program for how to insert a perfunctory scene to remind people that characters are in a relationship), and, no surprise, a lot of their overall screentime is scenes where Bellamy, Echo and Clarke happen to be in the same scene or same shot, and their narrative purpose is not hard to figure out:

Raven leaned forward far enough to see past the shimmering curtains out to the audience.

Shangela was tearing up the runway, to everyone’s obvious delight.  As she watched along with them, movement in the first row caught her attention.

Sitting pressed together from shoulder to knee, Bianca and Adore out of drag looked like any other couple enjoying an evening at Micky’s.  Adore’s head dipped briefly onto Bianca’s shoulder, receiving an indulgent smile in response.  Moments later and completely unprompted, Bianca casually reached over to squeeze Adore’s knee.

”Sure you want to stay back here all night?”

”Yeah,” Raja sighed, “too many people wanting the full Raja experience and it’s been forever since I saw you.”

Raven pressed a kiss to her cheek, and they fell back into comfortable silence.

“What are you looking at?”

Raja’s voice interrupted Raven’s voyeurism, and she turned to find her lounging lazily against the wall, wineglass held precariously in hand.  Partial drag was a good look on her (any look was a good look for Raja, honestly), the natural grey of her hair setting off her painted eyes.

She gestured vaguely towards the stage with her drink.

“Bianca needs to wear more color.  All of that black makes her look small.”

Raja breathed out a mellow laugh.

”She is small.  How many of those have you had if you’re forgetting that?”

”Do you think-“ Raven started then paused, trying to get her thoughts in order while simultaneously checking the set list and blotting her forehead with a powder puff.

”Hmmm?” Raja handed her a napkin for the sweaty cocktail balanced on her knee.

They both applauded as Shangela finished her set, and Raven headed back on stage to introduce the next performer.

Half an hour later, she picked up the thread of conversation as if they hadn’t been interrupted.

“Ever think the two of them are together?”

”Who?”

Raven raised an elegant eyebrow, but Raja was too busy peering out into the audience again to appreciate the look.

”Bianca and her little drag baby.”

”Oh.”  She didn’t sound surprised.  At all.  Actually…Raven thought she seemed more contemplative than anything else.

”Yes?  Or no.”

”Depending on how you look at it, yes and no.”

Turning to face Raja fully, she waited for an explanation, keeping an ear out for the change in music.

“Well?”

“Bianca told me once that she didn’t do boyfriends because she didn’t have enough time to commit properly.”  

Raven blinked at what appeared to be a tangential statement, but probably would end up being relevant.

“That bitch, out of everyone we know, could make time for anything.”

She waited patiently for a response as Raja took another sip of wine and waved at a local queen passing through.

”It’s complicated between them.”

”Obviously.”

”Bianca is almost as old as I am.”  

Raven snorted.

”Don’t tell me it’s an age gap.”

Lifting her glass to punctuate the previous statement, Raja continued.  

“There’s almost…It’s easy to forget that Adore is almost thirty.  She’s still figuring out how to be completely comfortable in her skin.  She’s so young in a lot of ways.  In some ways, that makes the difference even more obvious.  And Bianca has been at this for half of her life - and way more than half of Adore’s.”

“Well, she’s practically her drag daughter at this point.  But,” Raven checked the stage again, “they’re way too comfortable for that to be a problem.”

“I wasn’t finished.”

A sweaty Shangela came off stage and ushered the local girl on before heading over.

”What’s the tea?”

Raven smiled and patted the bench next to her.  “Sit down.  We’re trying to decide if Bianca and Adore are fucking.”

”Raven thinks they’re fucking.  I,” Raja deliberately flicked her hair over her shoulder, “was trying to explain that it’s more complicated.”

They both waited expectantly while she drained a bottle of water.

“My opinion?”  Shangela dabbed at her forehead delicately.  “Miss Bianca is too direct to not go for it if she wanted to.  And Adore, well, god bless that horny little thing.  She’d have jumped her if she wanted.”

Standing up, she air kissed them both and left in a cloud of neon fringe for her next costume change.  Raven headed back on stage, and somehow they didn’t manage to finish the conversation before the night was over.

Another Monday at Micky’s.  Adore and Bianca were once again seated in the corner near the beginning of the stage, clearly a few drinks in each.

”She’s got to be in total control, or else gets so drunk she doesn’t have to be,” Raja announced.

”What?”  Raven’s glass was empty and she signaled a server for a refill.

“You know who.  Bianca.”

“She’s a drag queen, drinking is part of the job.  Fuck, no one I know can function as well as Bianca does when she’s drunk.”

Raja nodded slowly.  Tonight she was completely her boy self, lending an air of casual chic to a slouchy deconstructed sweater and jeans.

"We were talking about Bianca and Adore.”

“Rave, you’ve known Adore for what, over a decade?  Since she was a baby queen.  And what’s her defining energy?”

“Messy slut?”

“I was going to say disorder, but that’s close enough.  Mix that with Bianca’s control and you’ve either got the worst combination of opposites or two people that complement each other perfectly.”

“So opposites attract.  It’s hardly news.  We’ve seen how they look at each other on and off stage.  And it sounds like most of the internet has too.”

“Half the net thinks we’re fucking, or haven’t you read the comments out there?”

Raven ignored the question entirely, watching as Bianca draped an arm around Adore’s shoulders without even looking as they carried on two separate conversations between sets.

"Bianca and Adore.  Practically on each other’s laps.  And that weird no-talking-but-I-know-right-where-you-are thing that they do.”

“We do that.”  Raja drained her glass and set it carefully aside.

"You didn’t pay for me to fix this hairline.  Or hang all over me all of the time when you’re sober.“

"That’s Martin’s job - ”

“You know,” Mariah’s voice cut in, “Adore made a whole video post about borrowing Bianca’s running shoes in Australia.”

Raven raised a sculpted eyebrow.  “Couples share clothes,” she pointed out.

Raja gave them both a look over the rim of her now-full wineglass.

"Bianca loaned Manila two whole outfits for All Stars that she hasn’t given back yet.  And I don’t think anyone thinks they’re fucking.”

"That’s drag.  We’ve all done it,” Raven pointed out. “This is boy clothes.”

“Awww, you wouldn’t let me borrow your shoes?”

“Your raptor toes wouldn’t fit.”

“Ha ha.  Whose side are you on anyway?” Raja demanded when Mariah snickered helplessly at Raven’s jab.  

“Oh, most definitely theirs.”

“Gonna tell us what you know?”

Mariah grinned wickedly.  

“Nope.”

“There’s more sexual tension between them than people who are actually fucking, then.  Look,” Raven tugged Raja over until she could see.  As they watched, Adore and Bianca laughed along with the rest of the audience at something the queen had done on the runway.  Mid-laugh, Adore twisted in her seat to look at Bianca, head tilted and a soft look in her eyes.  

“And?”

“Adore practically looks like one of those heart eyes emojis.”

Raja shook her head with that enigmatic half-smile that made Raven want to simultaneously hug her and shake her until she answered.

“It’s better than sex though, isn’t it?”

“…suuuuuuure."  Raven didn’t sound convinced.

"Think about it.”  Raja gestured eloquently with her free hand before settling back on the chair.  “Can you see Bianca putting minimal effort into anything?  She doesn’t let herself have the time to meet someone and direct her energy into a relationship, and you know how many race chasers are out there.”

”Bitch needs to get her dick sucked more often.  Unless you finally agree that she and Adore are hooking up?”

Predictably, Raja continued down her original train of thought.

“Other than sex, she’s got all of the best parts in Adore already - best friend, someone to take care of, someone who understands what we do.  And Bianca is exactly what Adore needs to stay grounded and let loose together.”

Of the inequality of palindromes

What it is : A canon divergence in which Noatak and Tarrlok leave together, build the Equalists much earlier, and the world once more descends into war. Avatar Aang is killed, Equalists occupy most of Earth Kingdom and spread the mercy of the Spirits-sent brothers who will make all equal, and a young Korra is raised behind the walls of the Northern Water Tribe. Also Jet is here, somehow, and would probably be one of the PoV characters, maybe along with Tarrlok ?

Why I want to write it : Lots of potential here for a lot of stuff, I’ve always loved Tarrlok and Noatak’s story, I already made a few sketches after the inciting dream and I kind of like what this all looks like. Lots of situations, lots of characters, lots of trauma. I feel like it could work with a non-chronological storytelling - or at least less chronological than A viper-lizard’s tales - and I’m curious to see how I would go about structuring that.

Why I don’t want to : The Timeline Is Fucked !!! I seriously have no idea what would be going on with the dates and ages of most characters and just trying to figure out and make sense of that stuff is killing me. Also, it would be Long, and Viper-lizard will probably have exhausted me by the time I finish it, so starting another long fic would be. HHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ace Attorney

What it is : A canon divergence in which bratty prosecutor Miles Edgeworth and Diego “I think I am a good person but I’m barely there” Armando somehow join forces to take down Dahlia. They’re both douchebags who despise each other. It’s a great collaboration. They meet one young and innocent Phoenix Wright at the legal library and it’s all downhill from there.

Why I want to write it : Douchebag duo !! Reluctantly working together !! I want these two to interact and to barely resist kicking each other in the shins like the little brats they are. And well, I’ve already made Content(TM) for this, so I’d say it speaks to how much I like the idea. There is a scenario somewhere in my mind and in the sketches I did.

Why I don’t want to : I’m barely in this fandom anymore (if I ever really was) and I don’t like research. What the fuck is a legalese and do I need to know it to write about lawyers ? Whatever the answer may be, I’ll have to look shit up, and it will take time, and I’ll get distracted, and the fic will never write itself.

Hannibal (NBC)

Ode au pêcheur (long ver.)

What it is : A role-reversal AU, in which Hannibal is not a cannibal but still a psychiatrist, and Will is a teacher and profiler with a, uh, taste for uncommon meats. They still meet during the Shrike case, which is what the current Ode au pêcheur is about, and this would be the following events.

Why I want to write it : For one, I already wrote a short piece for this verse, so jot that down. But also I want to explore the change in dynamics, and also Hannibal being completely fucked up but in a different way. And writing Will as this kind of mysterious and fascinating being through Hannibal’s eyes... yeah, that’d be good.

Why I don’t want to : I spent hours reading the scripts, deciding what I would and would not keep, how to phrase it, for a 878 words standalone. I do Not want to know what I’d do with a long fic.

Six Sibylline Books (oracles willfully blind)

What it is : A Psycho Pass AU, with Will as an Enforcer specializing in profiling, having been declared a Latent Criminal since he was 6, because of his high empathy. He lives in fear of the day his Coefficient will reach 300. Hannibal is, of course, criminally asymptomatic, and working as a therapist for the government.

Why I want to write it : Let’s be honest, these two in the Sibyl System would be a fucking mess, and I for one am here for it. Mostly I want to see Will struggle with his place in this world, and watch what his Becoming would be like. Hannibal as a worse version of Makishima who just does shit for fun is terrible too, I love it. He probably wouldn’t even try to do a revolution and pretend to help people, the asshole.

Why I don’t want to : I Would Die. Two very complicated shows with literary references and philosophy mixed in just about every sentence, and a very well-rounded world as the setting ? Instant death. Or a very slow one, induced by the constant need to reference every little detail.

Kekkai Sensen

Fallen Hellsalem

What it is : A noir AU in which Daniel Law is a hardboiled detective who has been looking for answers regarding the disappearance of his younger twin brother for the past three years. A two-parters (by which I mean, two fics of consequent length, or a Huge fic with two very long main arcs), with the first case introducing the world through Steven A Starphase being accused of murder and needing Daniel’s help to find the real culprit. Turns out he didn’t do This murder but is also a crime lord involved in the disappearance of many other people, reigniting Daniel’s quest for answers. The second case is actually much more focused on the actual investigation surrounding Marcus’ disappearance, with Daniel gaining an apprentice in the person of Leonardo Watch, and learning to let go of the past a little.

Why I want to write it : I made a 5 page comic of the very first scene in 20 days. I just really like the noir aesthetics, and also Daniel. I have something resembling the beginning of an actual plot. I love Daniel. Did I mention I love Daniel ? It would be very interesting to have to actually think things in advance and build a case that makes sense.

Why I don’t want to : It would be so much work !! Two parts ?? Two fics for one story ? Or even just a Mega Fic - I would just fucking die. Also, while having to figure out how to build a case that makes sense is a fine challenge, it’s also a Lot of work, especially when I’m more the type of writer to figure stuff out as it comes, or to plan for Big Emotional moments and then turn the plot around it so that it all works organically. I’m not really a planner of plots, more of scenes. Plots kinda just happen. And that doesn’t fly for detective stories if you want it to be decent.

Psycho Pass

The blind Sibylla (long ver.)

What it is : A canon divergence directly following the events of The blind Sibylla (in which Akane shot Makishima during episode 11). Makishima didn’t die but is injured, still somehow escapes ; meanwhile Akane is kind of scouted by Sibyl because she shot a guy with the intention to kill him and her Crime Coefficient didn’t rise, and she considers the offer. Kogami gets a phone call that leaves him sick to his stomach, and he too has to make a choice.

Why I want to write it : I mean, I already wrote two short chapters on impulse, so it’s more of “why I want to continue it”. Anyway the answer is that I’ve got ideas and I want to see where they go. Also if I can get Kagari and Choe Gu Sung to stay alive that would be swell.

Why I don’t want to : Psycho Pass Is Complicated. The worldbuilding is on point, but that also means fucking it up is incredibly easy. Also the literary references. It would be a lot more work than I am used to putting into my writing and I really don’t feel like memorizing the wiki and constantly rewatching the series just to get everything as accurate as possible.

Reborn

The illusion of love and the reality of hate

What it is : A TYL 186918 story about Hibari and Mukuro navigating their hate-relationship and trying to make it work. Especially after Mukuro was thought to have been killed by Byakuran. Would involve Mukuro asking Ryohei for advice because he is literally the only person in a stable relationship who has any idea what he’s doing, and also he knows what Hibari is like. A contract is drafted. I’m not saying Mukuro and Hibari get hate-married but. They get hate-married. Kind of.

Why I want to write it : I’ve wanted to explore a full-blown, healthy blackrom for a while now, and these two are one of my oldest ships, and also one I’ve written a lot for in the past. Love me a good mix of fucked up shit and humor. And boy would there be fucked up shit between these two.

Why I don’t want to : Two words : Sex Scenes. I can’t imagine this story (or this relationship, for that matter) without sex, as it would be one of the most primal way they have of communicating with each other, along with fighting. But I’ve never written smut in my life. Also I barely remember the TYL arc (better than the later ones, but not by much) so I’d have to look that up again, and probably more (likely re-reading the whole thing), but that’s a minor issue.

Red Raven

Cave Canem

What it is : An early canon divergence in which Ricardo gets lost in the panic of the five days of blood and is believed to be dead, while Walter meets Calogero at Castor Arte and decides to follow him around out of a mutual hatred of the Scaggs. Anyway Ricardo joins the Red Ravens because he believes he was abandoned and can’t trust the mafia anymore, while Walter more or less gets adopted by Calogero and becomes Laura’s right hand.

Why I want to write it : I just. I love this manga so goddamn much,,,,,,, Also Walter and Ricardo are very similar while being pretty different, and the changes in dynamics a switch would make are. Pretty darn interesting. I made sketches. I want to see what would stay the same and what would go differently. I want to send more Red Raven content into this world.

Why I don’t want to : This fandom is comprised of three people and a crow, and I know myself well enough to be certain I’ll have trouble staying motivated in these conditions. Also this would be Long, I can feel it. And I don’t really have a scenario planned, so that’s that.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

Snow blossoms

What it is : A canon divergence (?) in which Fai (the dead one, not our Fye) is a dream-walker and meets child Kurogane a few times this way. At one point, Kurogane promises to find Fai and Yui and to help them, no matter what. Later, the then grown Kurogane is eternally confused by Fye’s presence for one more reason.

Why I want to write it : It’s an old headcanon of mine that Fai is a dream-walker, I figured I might as well do something with it. Also I want to write this kid !! Give him some life !! And of course the KuroFye angst might just triple from this. Also, the truth is that I started this one (in January 2018...), and it looks promising. I already have a structure for the first arc, so that’s neat.

Why I don’t want to : For one, it would be Long, and as mentioned earlier in this post, I don’t think I’d have the strength to go through this again. For two, TRC is a cool story that I like a lot, but I hardly think about it anymore most of the time.

W.I.T.C.H.

Whispers under my skin

What it is : A canon divergence in which Cedric (still in his kind librarian skin) seduces Matt as a way to get to Will, and it backfires horribly when he realizes he is loved by this human and Phobos will never love him like that, and he will never get what he really wants. So at the final battle in Meridian, instead of going full Super Saiyan Lizard, he betrays Phobos. He gets badly injured, but he also gains a half-freedom as thanks from Kandrakar, in the way of a human life (plus some minor magic if the girls allow him to) and a duty to help the Guardians in their mission.

Why I want to write it : Like many of my dream-inspired things, it is very weird, and for once I think it’s a very good thing. Yes I had a dream in which Matt and Cedric had A Thing, no don’t ask me how that happened I don’t control my brain. Anyway, I’ve always liked Cedric and I want to explore his character, and the dynamics he could form with the girls in such different circumstances. Also, I’d get to play around with the magic system, which is very cool.

Why I don’t want to : I re-read my w.i.t.c.h. comics maybe once every two years, and while some of them still make me cry (why did you have to die you filthy lizard man), it’s probably not enough of a basis to start a Long Fic. Also it would be Long and I am tired. And ! I don’t have nearly enough references at home and that means I’d have to look shit up, and the wiki is Not Great, from what I’ve seen.

PolyRoleModels: So welcome to PRM, would you like to introduce yourself?

Andy Izenson: Sure! My name is Andy Izenson. I am a uh mediator and uh attorney. And I live in Brooklyn. Um I’ve been uh practicing polyamory for about 10 years and…

PolyRoleModels: Well that was that was my first question.

Andy Izenson: That’s all I’ve got. I really like…

PolyRoleModels: Well that was my first question. So what does your relationship dynamic look like?

Andy Izenson: Well at the moment, I would say it looks a little bit like- you know those- that uh that non-Newtonian material you make when you mix like corn starch and Elmer’s glue?

PolyRoleModels: Yes I’m-

Andy Izenson: Where like it kinda expands to fill the space available to it and it wiggles and poke it hard, it gets firm, but you push your hands into it gently and it gets kind of soft.

PolyRoleModels: I feel like this is the best explanation I’ve ever gotten for someone’s polyamory.

Andy Izenson: So it’s uh it’s not linear. It’s fluid and it’s complicated and it’s exciting. Uhm I have some partners that I’ve been with for a really long time. I have some that blast into and out of my life intermittently in brief explosions of wonderment. 

I have some that are close by and some that are far away. I have a very broad understanding of what love is and what a relationship is. And I try not to nail things down too much.

PolyRoleModels: Good answer. Um what aspects of polyamory do you feel you excel at?

Andy Izenson: Oh gosh, um, I’m really excited so you know the distinction that some people make is between parallel polyamory and what is called kitchen table polyamory. Where parallel is you have your relationships but they don’t interact with each other.

PolyRoleModels: Yeah.

Andy Izenson: Kitchen table is everyone comes down to the table and has breakfast in the morning.And the latter is the kind that is really more my speed.

PolyRoleModels: Okay.

Andy Izenson: I think if I’m good at anything, it’s that I’m really lucky in the people that I have around me. Um because if uh If they’re such exemplary and incredible and brilliant people, of course they are going to have wonderful relationships with each other as well as with me. 

So it just positions me in this beautiful shifting complicated web of interpersonal relationships you know? That are- that are, some are sexual some are not, some are romantic, some are not, but the important thing is that everyone has each other’s back in whatever way makes senses for those individual people in the web.

PolyRoleModels: Yeah, my polyamory is the same way. So what do you feel like you struggle with?

Andy Izenson: Well I mean feelings are difficult, right? Like having feelings is the worst. Talking about feelings is challenging. Um and I feel like for a lot of us, there’s really a- a pressure to perform like everything is awesome all the time and you never have bad feelings because bad feeling means something is wrong. So lately I’ve been finding myself really challenged not to take bad feelings as a sign of a problem.

PolyRoleModels: Yeah

Andy Izenson: You know, I can feel insecure, I can feel scared, I can feel angry. I can feel um- I can feel anxious and the only thing that’s necessarily evidence is my own feeling. And I can’t deal with that feeling by pretending it’s not there, or by trying to shift the material circumstances of my world to make it go away. I have to actually address my feelings head on and using my words like a grown up.

PolyRoleModels: Got you.

Andy Izenson: And that’s challenging for many people. And it gets exponentially more challenging the more people are involved.

PolyRoleModels: Well the next question is how do you address it, but it sounds like you kind of answered that in there.

Andy Izenson: Well I think the way I address it is by- is with trust. Like if the reason that it’s scary to express a bad feeling or to express a fear or anxiety or you know, or anger. If the reason that it’s scary is because I’m afraid that my relationship isn’t strong enough to hold that negativity, or I’m afraid that you know my partner would only want to be with me if everything was fine and easy, then the tool to address it is trusting my partner, trusting the relationship, trusting the communication the relationship and knowing that it’s strong enough to hold those things even though they’re painful.

PolyRoleModels: Alright in terms of risk aware or safer sex, what do you and your partners do to protect one another?

Andy Izenson: Well we uh, everyone’s got their own practice. And so for the relationships that are sexual, um we have-um whenever anyone wants to change a you know, a part of their practice and everything that’s connected in there has to be informed and it’s really about everybody having their own agency in their body and finding ways that everyone’s personal practice and personal agency can fit together in a way that makes everybody- doesn’t push anybody beyond their own acceptable level of risk. 

And it is a complicated practice and sometimes it takes a lot of [adjusting] because safer sex conversations are never just about safer sex. You know, it’s never just about you know what barriers you’re using and what types of relationships you do or don’t want to use barriers with. There’s always more feelings underneath that about trust and safety and bodies, you know about sex and all of that comes in play even if you think that- even if on the surface level you’re just taking about latex.

PolyRoleModels: Yeah. Um what is the worst mistake you’ve made in your polyamory history and how did you rebound from that.

Andy Izenson: I uh I have made this mistake more times that I’m happy about and it’s the mistake of thinking that um that the feeling of love is strong enough to overcome any problem.

PolyRoleModels: Yeah.

Andy Izenson: And typically there’s one problem that I keep finding that to be not true about and it’s the problem of a partner that’s not actually polyamorous.

PolyRoleModels: I see.

Andy Izenson: And I keep, in my history, I have repeatedly thought “this person loves me so much and I love them so much and we’re gonna figure out a way to make it okay” but it just- it always ends up with both partners feeling and having tangible evidence to suggest that they’re not enough. 

Because if my partner wants me to be monogamous with them, then nothing I can give them is enough to make up for the deficit they feel from me giving love to other people and they feel like nothing they can give me nothing you know, nothing about their love for me unless it’s evidenced to be enough by the fact of me becoming monogamous with could possibly be enough. 

And so I’ve- I’ve just followed that feeling of love um when the circumstances were- you know when that misalignment was there, um more than a few times. Because I just you know I was just so idealistic. I just believed in that love so much. But that is that has proved itself for me repeatedly to be a mistake.

PolyRoleModels: Yeah I definitely understand that. I’ve yeah, I know about that one. Um so what self-identities are important to you and how do you feel like being polyamorous intersects with those self-identities?

Andy Izenson: I would say that the first identity I would say is important there is uh that I would self-identify as anit-capitalist. And it’s my belief that capitalism and enforced monogamy are really tied together. Because we get taught by all of the culture and the media and stories that we get told. We get taught that love is finite. That when work and love work in a scarcity economy, there’s only so much to go around and you have to prove yourself to be worthy of it or else there won’t be any for you. 

And it’s completely ridiculous, but capitalism is an orthodoxy. It only works if you believe in it. And so it has to infiltrate every corner of our worldview in order to stay strong. And so of course it infiltrates our understanding of love. But I think we can start to liberate our bodies of capitalism by liberating our hearts from it’s orthodoxies. And if we imagine instead of being scarce that love could be abundant, it changes everything. And um if you think about it, it is completely ridiculous to imagine that love is scarce. 

If you light a candle with another candle, the first candle is not less on fire. And so I think in a practice of living in a way that is resistant to what capitalism tries to teach us, it’s about letting love be abundant and blossom into everything that it can be and not constrain it with the fear that is the substance of capitalism.

PolyRoleModels: Understood.

Andy Izenson: Yeah so I’m also queer and trans. And uh and those things are relevant both by reason of you know I don’t think living in Brooklyn and being queer and trans you really can be monogamous. I don’t think that’s really a thing. But also because both those things involve thinking critically about the stories that I was told when I was growing up about who I was supposed to be and how I was supposed to live. And uh and going through them and taking out the things that I actually wanted. 

That actually made sense to me. And keeping those and throwing away the rest and building something new around them. So in the same way as when I was young, everyone, you know, all of the stories that I was told about what my life was going to be involved monogamy, involved heterosexuality. They involved being a certain gender. They involved living a certain way and once you start, once you get sort of a crow bar in there and open yourself a little bit to the possibility that the stories you were told about who you were supposed to be might not be applicable or might not be real at all. 

They all sort come tumbling down and then you get this glorious opportunity to create the self that you actually want to be. And build yourself up. Um in a way that is critical of and resistant to the way that those blueprints are constraining.

PolyRoleModels: Fair, I’ve had conversations about masculinity with Bex Caputo of the Dildorks saying roughly the same thing.

Andy Izenson: Yeah, I love what Bex has to say.

PolyRoleModels: Yeah, yeah, we both do.

PolyRoleModels: Do you have any groups, projects, websites, blogs, etc. that you’re involved with that you’d like to promote?

Andy Izenson: Uhm, well let’s see. I’m a I have a- there’s a law firm that I work at. It’s Diana Adams law and mediation. We do education and advocacy and representation for people in non-traditional and polyamorous and queer and chosen families. So we do family law but from the perspective of your family is what you make it. Aren’t Some Things Inherently Gendered?

"My kid now identifies as non-binary. I'm starting to wrap my head around this but I struggle just because there are so many things that ARE inherently gendered in our world. For example, their sister is pregnant, but what happens with aunt/uncle? Bathrooms and driver's licenses are marked for men and women, so what then? Mr. and Miss? I just don't get it."

First up, I want to say thank you for listening to your kid and doing your best to take this on board and adapt to their identity. While most parents are familiar with the concept of transgender identities that fit the Western gender binary (i.e. trans men or women), so many still dismiss non-binary identities as made-up or “just a fad”, which couldn’t be further from the truth!

Cultures all over the world have had gender systems encompassing more than two genders for thousands of years. In several South Asian countries, for example, there is an officially recognized third gender known as hijras. Many indigenous North Americans accept and embrace the existence of two-spirit individuals, who embody the roles of third and/or fourth genders. Then there’s the Yorùbá people of Nigeria, who, prior to colonialism, didn’t subscribe to any concept of gender at all!

While I’m not saying your child ought to claim any of these example identities as their own (in fact, they should stay well away from labels with a separate cultural history to their own!), I hope that these examples illustrate how very few–if any–things in our world exist inherently divided along immutable binary gender lines, despite what our own culture and language would have you believe.

Let’s take a look at some of the examples you’ve given, and discuss how you can help your non-binary kid overcome our learned binarist approach!

First up: aunt versus uncle. It’s annoying how some roles in the English language have neutral options (e.g. parent, cousin, child), and some just… don’t. While some non-binary people may be comfortable picking a gendered term—I am non-binary and would prefer aunt, personally—it’s completely understandable that many aren’t. The good news is that this gives you license to let your imagination run wild!

Some of the more common alternatives I’ve heard to aunt or uncle are word smashes like ancle, untie, and pibling (short for “parent’s sibling”). If your family is Spanish speaking, riffs off the words tía and tío include titi, tíe, or tíx (pronounced the same as tíe). If you don’t fancy any of these, get creative! Some of the ideas on page 24 of this zine might give you a jumping off point. Talk to your kid and find out what they’d be most comfortable with. Do they have a term in mind? Do they want to wait and see what weird baby language name their niece/nephew/nibling comes out with and roll with that? Remember: there are no rules!

Your next example was bathrooms. This one can get a little tricky, because depending on your country and/or state of residence, your kid may legally have to abide by legislation known as a “bathroom bill”. These controversial laws essentially determine which gendered facilities an individual is allowed to access without breaking the law. The most high profile of these is North Carolina’s HB2, thankfully partially repealed in March 2017. HB2 stated that individuals could only use facilities corresponding with their sex assigned at birth, as listed on their birth certificate. Many other states have failed to pass similar legislature, correctly identifying the bills’ discriminatory nature.

Aside from the complications bathroom bills can introduce, this once again comes down to personal choice. If your kid needs to pee in a space where only male and female bathrooms are available, they should pick based on where they feel safest and what makes them most comfortable. There are no wrong answers to these questions. Make sure your kid knows this, and knows that you will support them should they be challenged on their choice.

Thankfully, many places do have gender-neutral bathrooms, which can help avoid any difficulties. There are several apps that exist to help you find these facilities, such as Refuge Restrooms. If your child prefers gender-neutral facilities and these are not available in spaces where they spend a lot of time (e.g. school, the gym, or a place of worship), maybe you could support them in campaigning for their inclusion. It’s not a difficult change to make—in fact, I suspect you have at least one gender-neutral bathroom in your own home!

When it comes to drivers’ licenses, the gender marker “X” in place of “M” or “F” is either available or soon-to-be in Oregon, Washington D.C., and California. Other states, including New York and Washington state, are making similar provisions for other documents, such as birth certificates and ID cards. Research the options where you live, and discuss with your child what they support they need from you to access these accommodations. If there aren’t any official non-binary alternatives available to them right now, help your child pick the option that makes them more comfortable (or least uncomfortable), and make sure they know that the problem is with our binary tick-box culture, and not with their real and valid non-binary identity.

Finally, in terms of titles, “Mx” (pronounced “mix” or “mux”) has gained traction and official recognition in the UK as a neutral alternative to Mr./Mrs./Ms. Other options include “Misc” and “Ind.” (short for individual), though these are significantly less commonly used—only by 0.8% and 2.5% of the non-binary population, respectively. Personally, I look forward to finishing my degree and becoming Dr. Williams; one of the many commonly used professional titles that do not indicate gender. These choices once again come down to personal preference, and what’s legally (and in the future, professionally) accessible for your child. If their choice of title is not legally recognised where you are, you should still respect it and encourage others in your family and community to do the same.

We live in a really exciting time, where needless binaries are, inch by inch, being rolled back as we speak. However, there’s still a way to go before trans and/or non-binary people’s rights catch up with those of the rest of the population. If there’s no precedent in your country or state for legal recognition of non-binary genders, you can do some digging and scope out any groups in your area working to change this. You could contact your local representatives, or raise awareness amongst your friends and peers. The possibilities are endless.
