What makes White Collar hold up so much better than other police procedurals:

It was part of the "pretty happy shows with gorgeous ensemble casts and a charismatic weird guy" USA network era but it somehow used that to be about stuff that is so REAL

What is justice? Is our system fair? Can you be a criminal and still be a good man? Can you be a good man and still work for the system?

The bad guys are rich assholes, and people defrauding families out of their homes, and unethical pharmaceutical companies. People manipulating energy supply out of greed resulting in blackouts which are showing *harming a dog,* aka how to show something is monstrous in a pg show written by a white person. Class exists in this universe in more ways than having a cardboard concept of a "rich guy."

The bad guys include police, FBI agents, prison staff, judges, senators. Those people cause real harm, obstruct justice, plant evidence, kill people. It's shown how the system protects them and harms regular people.

The harm that causes the main character to go from wanting to be part of the system, to subverting and working against it, is him finding out about an act of police corruption, brutality, and murder--and what's more, that if he became a cop, that's what he could become.

The harm that causes the main character to be outside the white picket fence is that the system failed his family after that act. What happened to Neal's mom? Why did nobody besides Helen step in? They had to check in with US Marshals, did nobody notice this kid didn't have an adult fit to parent?

So Neal turns to found family. And let's be real, heavily polyamory coded found family at that. But he keeps chasing the idea of a girl who will be everything. But he's got all this attachment trauma so he never does. But because found family is real family, even the people who freaking played the characters are still connected a decade later

valgrace except they steal eachother’s clothes all the time. it started off as something small. jason didnt bring a jacket so leo offered his because he always runs hot, he never asked for it back so jason kept it. leo scorched his camp shirt during a bad run in with the forge and jason came to the rescue with his own shirt, he was wearing an tank top underneath and leo walked around with the dark blue custom camp shirt made for the cabin of zeus.

then it became something bigger. they’d swap hoodies, pajama pants, everything possible until their closets were split between half and half.

after leo died, all jason could wear was his clothes. he wanted to keep leo close, to never forget how he smelled of birch wood and kindling ash. leo’s clothes were thin so jason almost always wore the first jacket that was given to him even in 100 degree weather.

when jason died, leo wore both. his clothes were covered in jason’s scent and he would switch them out for jason’s clothes when it eventually washed and faded away. it was the last things he had from jason and the night that he couldn’t smell him on the blue camp shirt, leo sobbed until his throat was hoarse and his eyes were sore.

So the best trope is when the main hero is fighting someone, and getting their shit kicked in. He is outclassed, the hero is trying EVERYTHING he can to win but he’s just barely hanging in there. The villain knows the heroes toast, the heroes friends know the hero is done for, and even the hero knows he’s doomed. But then, his love interest, screams his name, telling him not to give up. Not to die. And he looks to see her crying.

And the main hero goes Primal! How dare this bastard make the woman he loves cry! And just an explosion of power as the hero is showcasing power not seen or known. Pure adrenaline and it’s just a stunning upset where the Villain is now horrified. Because a monster has appeared

So yes I’m rewatching unlocked but the switch to prison toys playing and then the first line they say being “This is… this is what I am then.” IT HITS EVERY TIME

Twenty three is the worst fucking age, I am ten years older than you and I remember being in a very similar position at your age, ready to give up, done with life. From where I am now you are like a newborn baby to me, life is wide open and completely new no matter what it feels like no matter what society says you should have done no matter anything, the hard reality is that you’re on chapter one and it sucks. I don’t know you so I have no idea what you need right now or what would make you feel better or if you even want to feel better at all, if it’s too dark to even think about feeling better I’ve been there and I get it truly, living with my mother sent me down a dangerous spiral more than once. Here’s something I think is worth keeping in mind, there are a lot of mediocre men out there who can’t keep a job can’t finish a degree can’t keep a woman and they never turn it inward, it’s never their fault it’s always something on the outside and they are still a gift to the universe if you ask them. Well from where I stand you are an actual gift to the universe, in no small part because you are a lesbian and we are rare and resilient people and you don’t deserve for a moment to feel like you should give up on life because everything is going wrong in every possible way, see it like this: the same way things can turn for the worse they can also turn for the better, in the same unexpected equally fucked up way that will have you wonder how it even happened. You don’t need to have a plan right now, in fact you don’t need a plan at all you just need to take one step towards something that is good for you even if it’s just a shower or folding one single tshirt. Hope is a sewer rat, it’s gonna be there lurking whether you see it now or not. Things might suck for a while, hell I was 28 before things started vaguely going my way, but you don’t suck and I am not gonna tell you that the world needs you because that’s bullshit the world can do without either of us but there is a you far into the future who does need you, and if I from my corner of the internet have been able to find hope and camaraderie in your mere sporadic presence on this largely anonymous space then it’s worth something to be alive and to keep biting despite the bitterness just because you never know who you’re gonna touch and whose life you’re gonna change just by existing. Again, hope is a sewer rat and it’s not going anywhere you don’t even need to acknowledge it for it to be lurking in the shadows. From a dyke to another dyke I fucking promise it’s not gonna be this horrible forever, you’re a lovely person with a huge heart and you’re gonna find somebody who sees it and doesn’t take it for granted. Don’t give up, life is a shit show but we can’t be taking out the dykes ourselves when they are the best part of this wretched world

A sketch in honor of Akira Toriyama. While I wasn't the biggest DB fan, I did watch the shows from time to time as a kid, and recently. Without this series, however, one of my favorite pieces of media, aka Sonic, wouldn't have gotten its inspiration from DB.
