Something about the name of the show. The Pink Opaque. Something about no one looking at Owen at the end of the movie. Something about being transparent. Something about being opaque. Are you seeing the connection?? Is this anything?? Is any of this anything?????

the time jumps in i saw the tv glow make me so fucking insane and i can never let it go. 2 years, 8 years, then 20, each jump taking more and more out of owen as we watch him decay into a painstakingly unvariable excuse of a protagonist. no matter how big of a jump in time, we never really feel like we've missed out on anything at all. the only real change we experience is what monotonous, yet colourfully and visually overstimulating job he's trudging through, all to live the unfulfilling life he feels is the most safe. no known ambitions, no known lasting relationships, even the family he says he loves more than anything feels less like a feat, and more like a giant step back in the journey we know he needs to go on.
3 decades pass in the span of an hour and 40 minutes, a speed that would seem overwhelmingly fast, yet we stay tuned into the comfortability of that perpetual survival. we know what's going on, and we dont need to play catch up if there's nothing to catch up on. yet despite that comfortability of knowing where and when owen's stuck, it is killing us to know that the potential of what he could be and experience goes unacknowledged through the painstaking amount of years. and it's made all that much worse when we're forced to remember that the slow death we're watching is all the more real, both literally and figuratively, to owen.

[Image ID: A series of screenshots of dialogue from the visual novel We Know The Devil. The dialogue reads:
Jupiter: Could you just...
Jupiter: Couldn't you just make me?
Neptune: Do you want it to not be your fault?
Neptune: Do you want me to make you, so you don't have to take responsibility?
Then, a series of screenshots of dialogue from the movie I Saw the TV Glow.
Owen: After that night on the football field, I locked myself inside. I didn't leave the house for days. I kept waiting for her to show back up to force me underground. But she never did. End ID]

one of the many fucked up parts about i saw the tv glow to me that i haven’t seen anyone mention is how tara/maddy talks about how she paid “some burnout kid” 50 bucks to bury her alive, and how he probably didn’t even know he was burying her. and then the rest of her monologue plays out with parts such as “i screamed for help” and “i tried to apologize for the whole thing” which are reflected with isabel/owen’s meltdown at the end of the movie (screaming for help and then immediately apologizing). but i haven’t seen somebody link the part about tara/maddy paying someone to bury her alive and the fact that isabel/owen got married and started her own family. she got married as the man she wasn’t and it packed the dirt in her grave tighter, she went and did all the paperwork and paid for a marriage that only suffocated her further, a marriage to a spouse that likely didn’t know they were participating in burying her. i’m sure someone else has said something about it, just when comparing tara/maddy’s planetarium monologue to that last scene i only see people comparing isabel/owen’s meltdown to it and not the beats leading up to the meltdown, too. yknow

Getting someone to bury me alive so I can awaken as my true self but I keep eating the dirt too fast so I’m still trapped in the midnight realm

What if you were an aroace coded trans woman who had a television for a heart and I was a nonbinary-coded lesbian who buried myself alive and we autistically held hands and were happy and no longer trapped in a moon-juice-induced hallucinogen metaphor?

does anyone want to hear abt the paralells between links awakening and i saw the tv glow? no? i dont care take them anyways
THE TITLE: the most obvious paralell is the titles. i saw the tv glow and links awakening are both titled about coming to a realization
THE DREAM: the pink opaque and koholint island are both representation of the "ideal" reality, with few struggles
DESTINY: Link, being the chosen one, was destined to come to this island and wake the Wind Fish. Isabel was destined to be Isabel, as that is herself, manifested in the form of the Pink Opaque
THE GIRL: Both Link and Isabel have a girl in their dream that guides them through their journey. They are both implied to be love interests
THE GIRLS' WISHES: They both wish to escape. Marin wishes she was a seagull (metaphorically or literally), while Tara is escaping reality.
"If I was a sea gull, I would fly as far as I could! I would fly to far away places and sing for many people! ...If I wish to the Wind Fish, I wonder if my dream will come true." - Marin "
"Time wasn't right. It was moving too fast. And then I was 19. And then I was 20. I felt like one of those dolls asleep in the supermarket. Stuffed. And then I was 21. Like chapters skipped over on a DVD. I told myself, "This isn't normal. This isn't normal. This isn't how life is supposed to feel."" -Tara
THE BIG BAD: In Link's Awakening, Link finds the true mastermind behind all of the chaos on Koholint Island, the Shadow Nightmares who have the power to transform. The monsters were created by the Shadow Nightmares to prevent Link from awakening the Wind Fish. In isttvg, the big bad is Mr. Meloncholy, a monster who torments the Pink Opaque and reminds Isabel of her troubles.
WAKING UP: Both Link and Isabel "wake up" from their dream, with Isabel throwing out her TV and "moving on" (although u cannot move on from yourself) from the pink opaque. Link awakes the Wind Fish, therefore destroying the island in its imagination and freeing the Wind Fish
THE GIRL DISAPPEARING: After the ending of the dream, both girls disappear, never to be seen again
THESE QUOTES: Something abt these two quotes
"TO THE FINDER... THE ISLE OF KOHOLINT, IS BUT AN ILLUSION... HUMAN, MONSTER, SEA, SKY... A SCENE ON THE LID OF A SLEEPER'S EYE... AWAKE THE DREAMER, AND KOHOLINT WILL VANISH MUCH LIKE A BUBBLE ON A NEEDLE... CAST-AWAY, YOU SHOULD KNOW THE TRUTH!" - Link's Awakening
"Sometimes The Pink Opaque feels more real than real life." -Tara
IN CONCLUSION:
Link's Awakening and I Saw the TV Glow are very very similar to each other in the ways listed above (and a few more minute details), and I love trans girl Link from Links Awakening. Thank you for coming to my ted talk. Another comparison is they both have peak soundtracks.
theres prolly more but im brain farting
