Orphydice:

"y'all probably know the story of orpheus and eurydice. but they are SO tragedy. they are TEXTBOOK tragedy. they redefined the genre. on their literal wedding day as she's walking down the aisle eurydice gets bit by a snake and dies. orpheus loves her so much he goes down to the underworld to try and save her. hades allows him to take her back to the land of the living, as long as she walks behind him, and he cannot look back, otherwise her soul will be taken. he's mostly fine , but begins to doubt and at the very end of the tunnel, he looks back. they lock eyes for a moment before she disappears back into hell. orpheus is then so distraught that he wanders the earth singing mournful melodies and gets stoned to death by some nymphs who think his sad songs are bumming them out. DUUUUDE their story consumed my every waking thought as a child."

Madohomu:

"madoka magica aired 12 episodes in 2011, with a sequel movie titled “rebellion” released in 2014. it’s been over 10 years since then, and these two have become the face of yuri. if someone makes a meme about loving yuri and makes a collage of example ships, madohomu are 100% gonna be present. video essays, fanart, fics, music videos and all kinds of fan projects featuring them are still wildly popular on all social media platforms.

but let’s talk about them (without going into too many spoilers, so this will be about the thematics in their relationship). they are light and darkness. the ying and the yang. forever intertwined. one would not exist without the other, yet they cannot exist together. for madoka has too much love for every living thing and too little for herself. and homura has too much love for madoka it blinds her to everything and everyone else, and she struggles with deep self-hatred. madoka has forsaken her own existence for the world, and homura has forsaken the world she created for her. the show has a lot of religious imagery, and madoka is akin to a god; there’s a shot of homura, who grew up catholic, kneeling at the feet of a gigantic statue of madoka, praying, but her hands stain her clothes. because if madoka is god, then homura is lucifer - specifically, iblis, the muslim version of lucifer, who loved god so much he betrayed him, for he’d rather defy him than bow to his creation, humans. and homura would rather defy the sanctity of madoka’s wish, rather than obey its laws, for she will take madoka’s happiness in her hands, if she refuses to. in the movie, dolls representing homura’s inner machinations yell, “gott ist tot”, for homura’s god, madoka, dies in the movie, when homura remembers that madoka was human first, and godhood was something she reached to save everyone, against her best interest and happiness. their relationship is one of love, kindness, obsession, devotion, hope, faith, worship - they are the thesis and the antithesis, the beginning and the end, the alpha and omega, an unstoppable force and an immovable object. forever locked in a struggle, never fully embracing, for madoka will always sacrifice herself for the world, and homura will always doom the world and herself for madoka."

The instrumental at the start is cut off (tumblr limit, sorry!), but Orpheus was literally right in front of my face having a break down so I have to tell you for posterity. When this starts, he kisses his necklace (I'm once again asking what his damn necklace is), staggering and desperately hitting his chest to the sound of the keys, so grievously hurt. You can hear him shushing the Fates before they sing their first 'Where is she now?' here! The stage is so so dark, it really looks like Orpheus is alone here, until Eurydice starts singing with that big bright light, but he keeps on panicking. Madeline does a magical, heartbreaking thing here singing 'Orpheus' before she goes.

Hi so a lot of people are talking about how horrific Emilia Perez is from a Latin American perspective, which is really interesting to read. It’s not my place to way in on whether or not it is a good movie from that perspective.

BUT, I can weigh in on the trans perspective, and from that aspect the movie is, to borrow from the native tongue of the direct, tres shit. To start, the titular character spends the entire first act being aggressively misgendered. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, from the lawyer she hires to scout perspective clinics for her “sex change operation” (more on that in a second) to the actual fucking workers at the hospital she decides to have her operation at constantly refer to her with masculine identifiers, including a song where her lawyer refers to her as Mr Mystery while speaking with the surgeon and convincing the surgeon that Emilia is eligible for the “sex change operation.” FURTHER, when we meet Emilia, she’s been on HRT for two years with seemingly NO effect on her body. The film aggressively makes sure that Emilia is presented in masculine clothing, voice, and presentation before she truly “changed her sex” through the “sex change operation.” SPEAKING OF, this mystical fucking “sex change operation” is actually six different surgeries that would require weeks, if not MONTHS of recovery in between operations. The one surgery Emilia has is a orchiectomy, vaginoplasty, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty (bc big nose means man? nice casual antisemitism with your transphobia), facial feminization, and an Adam’s apple reduction (in the parlance of the movie). This is an absurd amount of plastic surgery to be done within a single procedure and it shows a dangerous lack of understanding of not only trans and gender affirming health care but also just like… surgery in general??? Finally, after the “sex change operation”, the movie finally lets Emilia present femininely and wear gender affirming clothing, as if to say that trans women/trans femme people EARN the ABILITY to wear gender affirming clothes by having massive, invasive, and expensive surgeries, and it’s only by having these surgeries that you can match your “anatomy” to your gender presentation. Long and the short, the understanding of trans shit is FUCKED, and it’s absurd that Dog Day Afternoon seems to have a better understanding of trans issues than Golden Globe Winner Emilia Perez.

And that’s before going into the fact that the movie is not presented competently at all. The cinematography is bad, the lyrics are contrite, the choreography seems to have been done by a chimpanzee with a ketamine dependency, and the script itself just lacks a compelling story.

Anyway, all this to say, fuck Emilia Perez. If you want trans centered cinema, go watch I Saw The TV Glow. If you want a movie musical, go see Wicked again.

he’s a gillman/water monter (from Lake Michigan specifically) because of his fisher vest and the ‘wanna join the swim team’ line

in MH canon, freshwater monsters can’t breathe air, so he has a breathing aid around his neck like G3 Gil

cephalopod eyes as a nod to how he and Wiggly are both played by Jon

don’t ask how his fins go through the fishnets i truly forgot until i had already finished drawing him

it’s not shown here but he has pointy teeth like G3 Lagoona!

Ruth:

she’s a simulacrum/Frankensteinoid because of the planned NMT3 story ‘Frankenruth’

giant bolts inspired by Franken Fran’s Fran Madaraki that connect to her headgear and a sweater inspired by Soul Eater’s Franken Stein

shoes are lifted directly from a G1 Frankie fashion pack because they looked cute

one white streak like the Bride of Frankenstein rather than Frankie’s all-over highlights

not sure if the ‘mad scientist’ that re-animated her should be Hidgens or not. i think they would make a fun family duo… maybe that’s where she gets her love of musical theatre?
