I Saw the TV Glow is such a uniquely, devastatingly queer story. Two queer kids trapped in suburbia. Both of them sensing something isn’t quite right with their lives. Both of them knowing that wrongness could kill them. One of them getting out, trying on new names, new places, new ways of being. Trying to claw her way to fully understanding herself, trying to grasp the true reality of her existence. Succeeding. Going back to help the other, to try so desperately to rescue an old friend, to show the path forward. Being called crazy. Because, to someone who hasn’t gotten out, even trying seems crazy. Feels crazy. Looks, on the surface, like dying.
And to have that other queer kid be so terrified of the internal revolution that is accepting himself that he inadvertently stays buried. Stays in a situation that will suffocate him. Choke the life out of him. Choke the joy out of him. Have him so terrified of possibly being crazy that he, instead, lives with a repression so extreme, it quite literally is killing him. And still, still, he apologizes for it. Apologizes over and over and over, to people who don’t see him. Who never have. Who never will. Because it’s better than being crazy. Because it’s safer than digging his way out. Killing the image everyone sees to rise again as something free and true and authentic. My god. My god, this movie. It shattered me.
#i saw the tv glow#I saw the tv glow spoilers#it is SUCH a queer story#the disassociation. the hiding in fiction to feel alive.#the horror of watching time tick by and knowing you’re not who you’re meant to be#the unique paralysis of staying put in hell because it’s safer than what might be over the horizon#the tragedy of trying to help someone who isn’t ready to be helped#god it’s so much. god. rarely do I walk out of a film and just stare soundlessly into space#anyway. please see this movie. although I sort of hope if you’re reading this post it’s cuz you already have#eta: I used he because the main character never quite vocalizes another pronoun#but this is SUCH a trans story. suuuuch a trans story. it is not even a little subtle#it’s so good and so so painful

One of my favorite headcanons is that Leo grew up watching telenovelas with Splinter.
It just works so well - his bits of Spanish that he spouts randomly, his showy way of apologizing, and, of course, his love for dramatic betrayals all point to this being a very real possibility.
Plus, it’s very cute to imagine a tiny Leo at his father’s side as they both gasp in shock when the show’s eighth plot twist in just as many episodes happens.
#rottmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#rottmnt leo#rottmnt splinter#rise leo#rise splinter#rottmnt headcanons#listen - Leo is there for the camp#if a show’s gonna be super broody and stuff he’s not about it he wants the DRAMA.#very similar reasons why he loves Jupiter Jim Lou Jitsu and magicians#glam rock too!#the camp of it all#the way these things can take even heavy topics and make it more lighthearted with the way they go about them#the way each of these puts importance on putting on a show#idk I think it’s very interesting#but yeah - Leo would totally love telenovelas#did you see him apologizing to Todd??? prime telenovela actress apology right there#the long fluttery lashes the hand to the chest the shiny eyes - like it’s all there#someone said that one of the creators said the telenovelas may be canon?#if so then another tick in the box for ‘oh my god Leo is an amazingly well developed character’

Something incredibly annoying when dealing with non-pnf stans when discussing with PnF is discussion of Candace being accidentally gaslit by her mother. In that they assume everyone is in on the fact to make Candace feel like she's crazy. NOBODY ELSE is doing that. In fact, nobody BUT Candace seems to understand the whole brunt of the situation.
The backyard gang are not "bullying" Candace or keeping her from telling her mom. In fact, they tell Linda about it themselves MULTIPLE TIMES. They talk about it off handedly a bunch of times too. Theyre just also 10, and Linda thinks it's part of the "games". She thinks theyre being imaginative. Theyre NOT. The backyard gang is NOT lying to her, and they are NOT perpetuating the assumption that Candace is crazy. Linda just doesnt believe them. The backyard gang doesn't KNOW this. THEY ALL THINK LINDA KNOWS.
LAWRENCE is not perpetuating the idea that Candace is crazy. He ALSO thinks Linda knows. HE HAS SEEN the backyard projects a bunch of times, and HE TELLS Linda about them TOO. However, and this is important, he only ever sees the cute, relaxed and sweet projects, and never the potentially dangerous or fatal ones, so he thinks Candace is being anxious and overprotective. Which she is, but that's a separate issue. LAWRENCE is not lying. HE thinks Linda knows.
JEREMY has seen the projects and parties. He talks about them at length, and how cool Phineas and Ferb are! He's never lied. He thinks Linda knows.
STACY has seen the projects and parties. She FREQUENTLY vouches for Candace. But shes Candace's best friend, so of course Linda doesnt believe her.
EVERYBODY EITHER THINKS LINDA ALREADY KNOWS, OR HAVE CLOSE ATTACHMENTS TO CANDACE SO LINDA DOESNT BELIEVE THEM ANYWAY.
Linda isnt doing it on purpose. NOBODY is lying.
DO i think Linda should believe her daughter now and then? And should Lawrence stick up for her more? Of course I do. But it's not malicious. Just....a bit neglectful. But Candace's assumption that everyone is against her is largely perpetuated in her own head and anxieties and miseries. She ISN'T alone. People ARE on her side, and she has more allies than she thinks. There are MULTIPLE episodes where Phineas and Ferb try to bust THEMSELVES (AKA attempt to show Linda their project with her own eyes) when she simply asks them to. A lot of people think she's really cool, and caring, and her brothers think shes unironically, absolutely AWESOME. Which has been the point of many episodes, AS WELL AS Candace against the Universe.
#all the memes about ah how the turn tablea#when someone has a story for Candace that Candace doesnt believe so its frustrating and all#is funny#but it ticks me off the wrong way#yeah Candace is being gaslit Cassandra of Troy style#but nobody's doing it to bully her or make her feel crazy or small#at least not on purpose#her vendetta against the Strange Universal Force seems silly in universe canon#but shes RIGHT#and the audience knows it#because the force has another name. called a plot point#it HAS to happen#Candace is doomed by the narrative#Candace Flynn#Candace Flynn Fletcher

thinking about steve in that first scene in nancys bedroom back in season one. thinking about how goofy and flirty and charming and playful he was being. thinking about him being like that with eddie, and how eddie would react to that version of steve. the whole talking in a silly voice, acting as that stuffed bear, the whole “bad steve :( don’t do that to miss nancy :( “ and “you are beautiful nancy wheeler”.
eddie plays dnd, even more so, he DMs dnd games, he stands up on tables in cafeterias and makes big theatrical scenes to rant about issues he has strong stances on — that man knows how to put on a show, and enjoys to watch one too. see: immediately accepting erica into hellfire as a replacement after seeing her go on one of her tangents, showing off her attitude and how she isn’t afraid to get in your face to get her way. he LOVESS that shit. lives for it. seeks it out. so when steve starts getting like that around him he would just crumble immediately i just know it.

So I've been thinking about time. About how they're stuck in different ways. And although I'm incredibly sleep deprived I could not go to sleep before I figured this out.
So here's the thing. We all know this place.
And this clock sets the time for the house and we can always hear it when there's a scene in this room.
Now let's go to the past for a minute.

This is the shot that precedes the JuYeong's confession. The clock marks 9:25.
Now back in the present when they go back to the house together this is what it looks like.
It marks 5:30. Which I assume it's the real time.
Now this is where it gets interesting. Because it doesn't stay that way.
When the camera in on Juyeong the clock is at 9:25
But when the camera goes to Dohoe, it's at 8:10.
Do you know what also is at that time?
[sources 1 & 2] The National College Entrance Exam in Korea, starts at 8:40, but you have to enter half an hour earlier. At 8:10.
So I said something earlier, about Dohoe being stuck. In a way they both are. But Juyeong is stuck in that confession, in his love for Dohoe, when he was happiest. Dohoe is stuck in his worst moment. The time everything changed.
That's it. That's all I got for now.
#let free the curse of taekwondo#태권도의 저주를 풀어줘#korean bl#rose rambles#another thing I noticed is that the tick tick sound is also present in Dohoe's room but not Juyeong#but I couldn't articulate anything else today

It is very funny that Dorian, knowing he's going to be seeing Orym again but also that he's going to be fighting, ordered the sluttiest piece of armour ever to exist. He really was like, I need to get some new armour but I must look as hot as possible in it.

spent ages preparing to audition for a role I really really wanted and it's looking like (still unconfirmed) they might not even be holding auditions at all but have just given it to someone directly
which, meh, that sucks but that's the industry!
I'm just like now what? I spent a lot of my free time the last few months prepping and I genuinely don't know what to do with myself now!
#guess I'll... have a bath?#call my mum?#keep prepping anyway on the off chance the rumours are false?#I already asked my agent to investigate but she can't find out either!#that's hollywood baybeeee#sorry mario your blorbo is in another show#I should get myself a treat as a reward for all my hard work even though it didn't work out#I have 3 criteria for this sort of thing and if I tick them all off I can walk away happy#Did I approach it from curiosity not ambition?#Did I make it known in the industry that I wanted the role?#Did I prepare for the role?#I did all three of those things so audition or no audition I can hold my head up high#might get myself one of those nice cookie dough brownies from the coffee stand this week as a consolation prize

You're still standing off to the side. Somehow, center stage has shifted from under your feet without you realizing, and you're standing in the wings, performing to no one.
Starring Role (Patreon)
#My art#ISaT#ISaT Spoilers#Siffrin#Loop#Technically - you know how it goes#Me when I relate to Siffrin: Oh no haha that's probably not great whoops haha#Me when I relate to Loop: Oh. Oh No.#Lenti has such a deathgrip on my ISaT opinions wtf how is she so powerful I thought my fave was Sif?? But I mean well-#Lol#Does this count as vent idk lol#It was fun to write tho :) Very easy! Done all at once!#As was drawing this! Also done all at once! And black and white is still really fun to work with hehe#I got to use some pretty cool outline/lineart tricks for this one yay :D#The original draft of the fic had a different title but ''Starring Role'' is kinda?? too perfect???#To the point where I looked around and I was like#Kinda shocked that there doesn't Seem? to be another fic with the same title?#Which is.........oddly relevantly thematic to this fic actually hahaha#Not to get too exacting about it but the whole thing of Loop feeling replaceable well#It would imply that other someones could do what they do better than them#What an odd refutation. Huh. Weird#Anyway - behind the scenes fun fact!#I actually really love the song Starring Role but I didn't think of it until after writing this#And now that I sing it to myself it's actually kinda perfect what the heck#So that's something to think about as well#Anyway if you're going to listen to it pls listen to the Axiom remix it is The version in my heart <3#The glitches and stutters are perfect.....#And the clock ticking?? Why is this song so ISaT I'm gonna think about this for a while now heck#Animatic in my head shower thought -core lol

culturally a sirenian from the southern east continent, where kattakati are relatively common, would not think of a kattakati as two people - to such an extent that the concept of two halves falling for one another isn't even on the cultural radar. there is a taboo there, however, about not treating a kattakati as a single person, and this extends to the component bodies of that person (the halves). if you find yourself falling for the other half of yourself, then you're diluting the meaning of the bond, perverting it, even, and you were never really one in the first place. this has the potential to go SO badly for both component halves, particularly if one of them is innocent of this perversion and now has to get their name dragged through the mud/face possible exile in some very traditional, conservative settlements
of course, the surrounding regions don't have such a tradition, and they tend to stare in from the outside with a fascination that runs the gamut from simply curious to outright fetishisation & sexualisation. the "one body of a kattakati falling for the other!" story is a piece of juicy forbidden romance fiction that can unfortunately bleed into their actual interactions with kattakati
#sooo do you guys - ah sorry i mean. do you (individual) (am i getting the pronouns right?) - do you fuck each other? what's that like?#you don't? lol if i was pairbonded with another person - omg sorry i forgot again. right. right. if i was ONE HALF of ONE PERSON i would#be getting it on all the time. wait what do you mean you're dating someone. like as a throuple? OMG no i'm so sorry i forgot again!#setting: siren#but yknow. if u were particularly prone to dogmatic thought and also very repressed i could see attempting a kattakati bond as a way to#process those feelings. and of course that is just a ticking time bomb.

One of the most interesting things about looking at Buck-Tick lyrics is not just Atsushi (and Imai)'s evolution as a wordsmith but his evolution with topics, if that's even the right word for it. You literally get to watch him get hit by things we both do and don't know about that happen to him throughout his life, and then how over time he grew to deal with them- or sometimes just accept them as fucked- and what he thought about it. And of course not everything is auto-biographical- we know his love for creating characters to tell meaningful stories about- but you still have the well-known strains of how he deals with significant loss, how he comes to terms eventually with people from his past he can't change, his own fuck-ups, encouragement to fans, examinations of things he encountered either irl or in the news.
And then, whoever came up with the brilliant idea to record so many live performances literally from day one until the very, very end...because not only does he evolve with each layer of new songs but also with each fresh performance of even some of the band's oldest, iconic songs. We get to see for ourselves how his relationship to various subject matter changes from performance to performance, the best ones being with decades between them. Whether it's a raw, excruciating grappling, to a sort of sublime madness of acceptance, to finally elevating himself above the issue entirely-- 太陽に殺された/Murdered by the Sun is such an excellent example of this, and for those just wandering in is a song about questioning celebrity, whether it's worth being a player on the stage when the attention can be excruciating- and with the added subtext that the ones you love may die with you nowhere near them for the sake of success. Atsushi questioned his entire career with this song after his mother died from cancer while the band was on tour- "Murdered by the Sun" perhaps more than just a metaphor for being killed by the spotlight, but him as a son feeling extremely responsible for not being there. If you have the time to take out to watch all three play out, I encourage it:
youtube
The most famous, from 1992, where he even added an extra verse at the end that I don't think he ever sang again- an extremely raw and clawing performance where the lighting at the beginning hits his face perfectly to reveal a Noh mask-like countenance to pull us back to this idea of the oldest theatre, and also to the fact that he likely felt like he was currently hiding behind perhaps several masks at the time.
youtube
10 years later in 2003, now the lines of the song are drawn out, more floating, his lilting voice older and more seasoned than last time. It's been ten long years that probably shot by in a flash and he's experienced so much with still so much yet ahead of him. The madness of it all is settled in his bones now, you feel, and there is an acceptance about it even though he's learned to shoulder the strain that's still there.
youtube
10+ years again to 2015, now the song starts off as if he's telling a story about someone else entirely- he's risen so far above the issue because it is wholeheartedly his life now- but in the second half of the song you sort of see him reawaken and look back down at his past self as he asks his questions "Will I just die? Will I live?"- like looking back into the past and going "Well what will you choose, kid? Because here we are now." And in his final chorus he no longer is left beating himself up telling the sun to just kill him like he did the first time in the added verse- now he's blowing kisses to the sky in each direction as he thinks about those gone on- and this time, this time, at the end he does not die.
Honestly, that someone had the genius idea- even if it was just for marketing and to make money- of recording so so many lives which allows us to literally see it all in action with our own two eyes like the best sort of modern anthropology...I want to hug them. Because such a life...such an artist and their very vivid artistry is preserved forever now in a way that we can look at almost like pages in a book.
There is no conclusion to this post because ultimately there is no conclusion- at least not a satisfying one- to his story. Or perhaps, writing it out and thinking about it now, ironically there is. Atsushi, essentially, died on stage. Weirdly self-fulfilling that the 'sun' of the stage, in a sense, did catch up to him in the end when a song about dealing with problems in the moment was never meant to be a prophecy. And I don't think it was, genuinely. More of a curiosity at best. Something that makes his story all the more interesting, perhaps. And that's precisely why I think there's no ending to be had- every person who sinks their claws in deeply to the material will come away with some treasure that possibly no one has managed to see before. And that, right there, keeps adding pages to the book.
There is no ending because a sudden curtain fall does not constitute an ending, and there is no ending if all of us continue to add pages to his and the band's story. Not even the band is stopping their own page-adding- Imai claiming Atsushi was causing mischief in the studio while recording Subrosa is testament to that.
I don't know. This post started off as just a vehicle for me to rattle off the pressing thoughts I had about artistic and personal evolution and then turned into this whole thing so I don't have much of an ending here myself. Except to perhaps say don't stop listening, don't stop watching, don't stop posting and comparing and questioning and sharing your thoughts about things, because these are all pages to a book about a man whose artistry is very much alive and well- because of us. They say, too, sometimes, that when people are reincarnated they can still remember who they are, or they remember wisps of enough to recognize things from before. I'd like to think, perhaps in a rather fantastical way maybe, that when the wheel turns and he comes back again, that in his travels he may stumble across some old band called Buck-Tick and see not just the mountain of art he and his best friends created but also all of our little foothills piled around it containing our thoughts and translations and praises and grief and happiness all carefully built with love left behind for him and the guys. And that somehow, whether he understands it or not, he can smile at seeing us all again, even if it makes no sense to him at all.
#buck tick#atsushi sakurai#this post started one way and ended another- I'm really sorry#anyway don't stop examining art that you love no matter what happens ok?

I have absolutely no idea how they’d do it but I constantly daydream about a death note part II musical… give mello and near the duet they damn well deserve
Like. The original musical does such an insanely cool job of incorporating the each character’s instrumentals into the musical, I’d kill to see how they’d tackle Mello and Near oTL
#death note#mello#near#mello death note#near death note#death note the musical#I think so often about how in the show mello and near’s themes end up completing each other#Near’s earlier themes (1 and 2) both feature L’s typical piano with a hint of Near’s trademark synth#Which is a really cool thought because synths are sort of like an “evolved piano#Meanwhile Mello’s 1st and 2nd themes are very electric guitar and drum set heavy#which again is another aspect of L’s theme as it shifts from piano to guitar#On another note all of the ‘thinking’ themes incorporate a ticking sound#but Mello’s is really unique because it sounds more like a bomb timer than a stopwatch#foreshadowing fr…#anyways when you get to mello no theme and near no theme they’re more complete#Near grows into himself and abandons the piano completely in favor of his synth that then incorporates the guitar and drums (mello core)#while mello no theme takes a calmer approach than his previous themes *but* starts including Near’s synthy sounds#anyways a back-and-forth musical duet would really suit them#and then their instrumentals could complete each other when they work together briefly#it all makes sense in my head I promise.. the vision is there
