there is honestly sooo much evidence that Brenner used Henry to "breed" Eleven and all of the other kids at Hawkins Lab:

we never learn anything about who El’s biological father is. it's never even posed as a really tangible question. all we know about Terry's pregnancy was that it was a surprise, and they were all worried about it since she was in the middle of doing these supposed "drug experiments" at the lab, which was also used as a cover for taking away El, blaming a "miscarriage."

if Terry was under the influence, she likely would not have ever been aware that she had been artificially inseminated.

Henry is of the right age for Brenner to have collected sperm samples from him. quick math with some science thrown in: El was 8 in 1979 and Henry was 32 (per the fandom wiki). therefore, when El was conceived, Henry would have been 23/24. we don't know the ages of the other kids at the lab, but there don't seem to be many who are older than Eleven. some of the kids who assaulted her looked like they could have been 15-18 (though this also depends on how much we're aging down the actors like the main cast lol). regardless, even if we ballpark one of the older kids being 18, Henry would have been 13/14 at the time of conception. people who produce semen can start developing sperm as soon as puberty begins, which can start as early as 11 years old. as icky as it feels, i would not put it past Brenner to take samples from Henry the instant he was viable.

the fact that there are age gaps between all of the kids is evidence that Brenner didn't want to raise any red flags about the pregnancies in his test subjects. it seems like anywhere from 1-4 kids at the lab could be around the same age, so Brenner would have played it safe by inseminating just a few women at a time to not raise any alarms.

Brenner admitted that Henry was difficult to control, so that would lead him to try and get "fresh" minds that he could mold from infancy so the kids wouldn't try to fight against him and would do exactly what he asked. he needed to be sure they'd have powers to begin with, though, so of course he tried taking from the only source he had.

this is less evidence, but just something the scene after Henry helps El and he gets physically punished for it reminds me of. him being tasered reminds me of livestock being physically reprimanded into behaving a certain way (ie. taser = cattle prod). and, hey, if you want good cattle, you breed your best bull.

and now, less quantifiable stuff to point at, but more evidence by way of the storytelling of the series... i talked about it in depth in this post where i discussed my personal thoughts and hopes for how they elaborate on the relationship between El and Henry, but to sum it up:

throughout the entire show, but especially in s4, there's been the discussion of "good vs evil" or "monsters vs superheroes" and how things are not so black and white, as Brenner put it. even Henry says that, no, Brenner was not a monster, he was just a mediocre man who was searching for purpose vicariously through his experiments.

this, i feel, is obviously leading to an understanding on Eleven's end that she has both done monstrous things and is still a good person at heart. she strives to be good, she pushes against being the "monster," but she will have to admit that, sometimes, she behaves in monstrous ways. however, that does not make her a "monster."

this could very easily jump into her being blood-related to Henry, worrying that it makes her more of a monster, before realizing that evil is not genetic. like, it's not that far of a stretch to place this narrative over blood relations while the kids at Hawkins Lab already all view themselves as "siblings" due to their upbringing.

on the opposite side of the coin, this feeds into the discussion that Henry is not a pure-blooded monster. not only will Eleven have to realize that she is capable of being a monster, but Henry is capable of not being a monster. he is, just like Brenner, simply a man who happened to find himself in fantastic circumstances.

i think their relationship is suuuuper interesting but also that popular interpretations of slade forget two crucial details — he’s obsessed with dick grayson to an unhealthy degree, and he’s canonically a child rapist.

first ill elaborate on that last part — the retcon that deathstroke is a badass, sometimes grey morality type guy that people respect tends to ignore his first proper appearance in comics, wherein he was sleeping with fifteen year old tara markov. slades history in comics is inextricably tied to many iterations of the titans. he has always, always been a freak with kids. he should never be framed as anything but that. none of that suave, menacing dude thanks. adeline should’ve taken both his eyes.

wrt dick i think they’re interesting because slades thought process goes — i just got defeated by a kid in a stupid costume -> that kid in the stupid costume defeated me, meaning he has to be something special. slade is a very proud person with a lot of faith in his own abilities, so dick grayson must be truly exceptional to have outmanoeuvred him. slade imo works best as a nightwing villain (rather than a batman or ga villain) because that egotism is crucial to slade’s character. dick grayson is exceptional, and slade takes pride in both defeating him and briefly allying with him. like i said in persephone: it’s all about power. slade will do anything to get the upper hand.

where shit gets lost in the sauce is devin graysons explicit coding of their relationship as romantic which. i won’t elaborate on. but ignoring everything else whack about it i think it flattens their relationship. slade is all about control and doing anything to achieve his goals. dick is a significant obstacle to that. slade hates dick, but in a twisted way he also respects him, because dick having to fight slade is a positive reflection of slades own abilities (in slades eyes). slade killed 100k people in dicks name. dick mourned both slades sons and taught his daughter. the power that comes with trying to smother that kind of light would be intoxicating to someone like deathstroke. there’s a lot to chew on there.

A very fun casefic with some brilliant development of Edwin and Crystal's friendship. Of course I have read many many more lovely fics since I first watched the show, but alas I do not have the time and space to list them all. Weird but I think a big reason the Afton family/William Afton is so damn interesting to me is because I’m somebody who has always been intrigued by psychology and what makes people do the things that they do, right? And it is suuuuper fun to explore that with a work of fiction that’s so open-ended. I personally like to think about William loving his kids, or at least once upon a time- but at the same time, he goes on to be this horrific serial killer. Just…fuckin fascinating STUFF, dude. Outpatient

Ok, hmm, I have 3 - 5 brains cells back to work. This has been a strange day.

When I went into the surgery center, the person leading me down the hallway introduced herself; "Hi, I'm Kelly, I'll be with you the whole time you're here."

Honestly, between a lifetime of farm veterinary emergencies and the whole Childbearing Thing, I am pretty darned nonchalant about medical care. I'm not worried. But it's sweet when someone tries to make me feel 'better'. I just roll with it. It's the thought that counts.

She got me settled in a dentist's chair and started all the minutia of prep; the sticky electrodes on my arms, the blood pressure cuff, the little finger-clamp-thingee. She gave me a small cup of versed, explaining that it would calm me down. Not necessary, my learnéd friend, Kelly, but I'll take it. Gimmee.

Then we had to do the little "why are you even here" dance. Apparently, Mandibular tori are often small and not an issue. Often. Not always. When they turn into big honkin' chunks of bone that interfere with eating or hygiene, then they have to go. And every dratblasted dental person I mentioned them to always tried to tell me they're not an issue! Until they look in my actual mouth and say. OH. Uh. Yeah, that's an issue. Grrr.

Next she hooked a nasal cannula over my face for nitrous oxide. That I have never had before, that I can remember, and I was curious if it would make me giddy or giggly. It did not. My head got very quiet inside, though. I was enjoying that, but my silence made the nurses nervous, and they kept asking if I was ok. I was ok. Just suuuuper quiet. And enjoying it.

The surgeon entered the room and he and the nurses did an interesting little call-and-response routine to ensure that I am the correct patient getting the correct surgery on the correct side of the body. Then the IV medi c i n ooooooooOOOPsie - waking up time!

I have never before had so MUCH novocaine that my mouth was still numb 8 hours later. Not complaining; I'm sure I don't want to know what it feels like in there with a chunk of bone cut out. Very odd, though.

• Emily honestly had no clue who you were. She didn't keep up with that sort of stuff, so she was a bit clueless. However, she was invested. “What was your life like? How was being a popstar? What kind of concerts did you perform?” she asked eccentrically.

• She was invested in your past, she always had some sort of interest in the unknown. She wanted to know you on a deep, conscious and subconscious level. Knowing this part of you only brought you two closer, and she loved it. She could feel your energies alligning.

• Emily was indifferent when it came to your past, she would've loved you regardless. She supported you in every way possible, she even dabbled in your music! She wasn't usually a big fan of this sort of stuff, but it was ... nice. It was like hearing your thoughts vocalized, it helped her understand your energy easier.

• You and Haley were hanging out in her room, she was reorganizing her record shelf. You were surprised to see your own record, sitting there along with ... every single other record you've ever put out. Wow, Haley must be a big fan of your stuff ... you were really scared for how she would react.

• When you shyly mentioned your past, she looked over at you, jaw practically hitting the floor. “Wait- you're kidding! ... that makes sense timewise, they did go into hiding shortly before you arrived ... and you two do look similar ... oh my gosh, I'm dating my idol! I never would've guessed you'd move to some stupid, small town like this.”

• Although very enthusiastic about asking questions, she reeled them in for a moment. “... I admire you, I really really looked up to you, please don't look at me any differently because I'm your fan. I'll try to kind of separate that, but you're such an interesting person, before and after I found out about your past. Now please, tell me everything!” she giggled softly, taking your hands in her own as she happily listened.

• She revealed a secret of her own. She took her camera to one of your concerts on your last tour, taking so many gorgeous pictures. Her photography was beautiful and flattering, and you couldn't help but say thank you. She was embarrassed that she hadn't made the connection between you and the popstar she always admired, but she was just glad she was here with you.

• Haley was so interested, everytime you looked into her eyes it was like she was connecting the dots. She must've been a dedicated fan back then, and now she's your dedicated girlfriend. You could tell she adored all aspects of you, not just your past stardom. She also made sure to tell you each of her favorite tour and red carpet outfits you've ever worn.

• Leah was working on a sculpture, however she was stuck. She was struggling for inspiration, sighing as she looked over at you. She asked what you did for inspiration, to which you thought for a moment before answering. She was curious as to what you needed inspiration for. Well ... you've gotta answer now.

• She was expecting a fun hobby, not a full blown past career. “Wow, that's really cool, hon! It sounds pretty stressful though, I agree that having a career relying on creativity is rough ... I bet that plus all the struggles of being famous didn't help,” she said, focusing every bit of her attention on you.

• “Your work must've been incredible, gaining that much popularity. Would you like to share some of it with me? I want to see what you wrote about, and your past passion. Even if you don't want to be famous anymore, if you'd like to write, I would love to listen. You can bounce ideas off of me, anything you'd like. And if you'd rather not talk about it, I understand.”

• Leah was more than intrigued by your work, and how you did it. Music was such an interesting craft in her eyes, and she loved it. She was so interested in your stories and your history. She didn't overstep your boundaries though, making sure she didn't ask too many questions. She just listened to you talk, and she enjoyed every second of it. It's her favorite hobby.

• She found her inspiration soon after, eventually ending up sculpting a peace based on your music. You were always her greatest source of inspiration, she mentioned it often. She was so in love with you, every aspect of you is so beautiful and art worthy. Even aspects of your life that you've left behind were gorgeous in her eyes, and she can't wait to see your future by your side.

• Maru was sitting in the floor, working on her newest robotic creation, when you walked in. She was humming a familiar tune, but then it hit you. It was familiar because you wrote it. You let out a gentle laugh, to which she looked a bit confused. She asked you what was funny, and you thought for a moment. Well, she's gonna find out eventually. Might as well tell her.

• You sat down next to her on the floor, casually mentioning that you wrote it. She laughed, smiling over at you. “Ha ha, very funny. That song is just something I heard on the radio, I highly doubt that you wrote it, unless you're some popstar in disguise or something ... wait what?”

• As you told her about your past career, she looked on with a smile. “Wow hon, I never knew you had this side of you. Your career sounds so stressful, no wonder you wanted to come out here. Do you need to vent about anything? You know that I'm here for you, right?”

• She didn't really listen to the music you put out, it wasn't exactly her style, but she would listen to it if you asked. She enjoys listening to you talk about your past career, and likes hearing things that you've learned from the experience. She's especially interested in the technical aspect, what goes on behind the scenes of tours. Lights, sound, mics, all of the backstage stuff.

• However, she wanted to make you feel comfortable and normal, not like some celebrity. She tried her best to treat it as something normal, just another everyday career. Maru cared about you above anything, and was entirely focused on keeping you physically and mentally healthy. She would listen to you vent any day.

• You and Penny were sitting in the forest, watching Vincent and Jas play, having soft conversation. You had asked Penny what her taste in music was, when she started talking about her favorite artists. Most of them were on the less popular, indie music side. However, she bashfully mentioned that she did have one relatively popular artist she listened to. You were not expecting her to mention your name.

• You weren't exactly sure how to bring this to her attention, so with a nervous laugh, you said that it was you. She tilted her head to the side, a little confused. “... Hold on, could you elaborate on that, please? I'm a little confused ...” As you told her your story, how you wanted to get away from the limelight for a little while.

• “Your music has always interested me, I've honestly been following you since the beginning of your career. I know that you probably don't want to talk about that part of your life, since you moved out here to escape it, but I'd love to talk about some of your songs with you. Your lyrics really speak to me,” she would say with a soft smile, warm and welcoming.

• She loves to analyze the lyrics of songs she enjoys, she's certainly a more lyric oriented person. So, when you agreed to sit down with her and explain the stories behind some of her favorite songs, she was enamored. She listened to every word, paying close attention and loving every second of it. She reciprocated with some stories as well, you two had a deep bonding experience through your music.

• You didn't know how much of a fan Penny was, but it was so sweet watching her learn more about you. Seeing how much she cared about your life, every part of it, made you smile. She's the sweetest, and you can't wait to learn just as much about her.

This is officially me weirdest take on pregnant Dream but this idea just would not leave my head so.... sorry.

What if Dream has to give birth to his dreams and nightmares? If he is pregnant with a dream, it is one of those annoyingly easy pregnancies. The only complaint he has is that everything feels so good that he is horny all the time. Even the birth is a pleasurable experience, and all that delight and joy and pleasure is part of them being dreams. With nightmares everything is pretty terrible. Aches and pains all around. Dream loves them all equally of course, and he is very proud at the unborn nightmares for already growing into their function so well.

Omg not weird at all! We've talked a bunch about Hob being pregnant with dreams & nightmares, but we've never really talked about Dream doing it himself!!

I love this concept of the dreams being suuuuper easy, Dream is glowing, his skin and hair are so lush and he's in such a good mood! The birth itself is essentially one extended orgasm (the first time Hob witnesses that, his mind actually blows a little bit. It's just... extraordinary. And seeing Dream in so much overwhelming pleasure definitely makes Hob horny enough to want to put his dick in Dream... maybe before the birth is even over).

And of course the nightmares are...... a nightmare. But that's what Dream wants! He wants them to kick and scream inside him, and make him nauseous all the time, and make the birth an absolute hell! They're doing their job and they can't really hurt him, so he's nothing but proud and supportive of his tiny nightmares.

Hob loves seeing his beloved Dream take on this role as creator and parent. It makes the dreaming stronger; everything is more connected and Dream’s relationships with all his creations is so special. They really were inside him, and they know that he nurtured them before they were strong enough to fend for themselves.

Also it's just very sexy to see the dreamlord wandering around with his hands on his widened hips, trying to calm down the latest batch of rowdy nightmares inside his womb. He's always keen for Hob’s hands to be on his belly, or inside him... there's no discomfort that a good orgasm can't fix, right?

Ok so girl dad Danny idea, what if his daughter instead of following in his bloody footsteps, she wanted to become a photographer or a reporter? Like she took an interest in it at a young age and it might have been something they might have even bonded over?

I have so many thoughts about girl dad Danny okay I was on a 22hr car ride I had a lot of free time--

Part of the fun of him being a girl dad is making his daughter the exact opposite of him; just a little bubbly ray of sunshine, probably cries when she sees a dead worm, zero bloodlust in her tiny soul, if she wasn't the spitting image of Danny then you'd never be able to convince him that she was directly related to him. Besides, that's his baby girl, sure he's going to teach her how to stand up for herself but why let her bloody her sweet little hands when she has a daddy she can sic on whoever she wants? Good parenting is turning your child's bullies into orphans.

Getting into photography is definitely the most likely hobby she would spring for I feel, but more so being the model/subject than doing the actual picture taking. Danny only makes an effort to see her, like, twice a year at best for maybe a month, but when he does you better believe he's taking dozens of photos of her at any given moment. His excuse is that she's his gorgeous girl! She's getting so big! He has to keep as many memories of her as he can since he hardly gets to see her!! (Despite the fact he's the one that decides to fuck off for 6+ months at a time to commit a string of grisly murders in a new small town). And she eats that shit up every time, thinking her daddy is so loving and devoted as best he can be with his suuuuper busy and important job.

She'll be one of those naturally photogenetic models in no time. Every time she's out with Danny and she sees a good spot, she'll tell him to take a picture of her, and he'll always oblige. Teaches her different poses and expressions, which way to face in natural lighting for a better look, how to match a camera's angle to avoid any facial distortion. To her, they're bonding because he just adores her so much, her self confidence is always through the roof with how much he compliments her and takes pictures of the moment. To him...well, she like a little mini-me. He loves her, he's proud of her, he's obsessed with her because she's a literal extension of him. These photos are a good way to commemorate his "personal achievements" that his daughter clearly earns on her own, but he feels the need to take credit for since she wouldn't exist without his (accidental) help.

I always wanted to ask. Do you like hate Viktor or? I’m a bit confused since his entire life has just been trauma after trauma but it kinda feels like people don’t care? I kinda just want your thoughts on his story (both before S1, Aka when he was a kid and like S1 to S3?) like, what constitutes as a victim mentality when he’s just constantly being tortured? Is it his fault his powers are dangerous? Or is it his fault that he had a panic attack and basically went haywire? /Gen

Ooooh, this is an interesting question. This is going to be a long answer.

So no, I absolutely don't hate Viktor. Actually, what I love about him is that he has a dark side like everyone else. It's what makes him compelling. Emotionally, he's a deeply traumatized human being. By nature, he's gentle and has a strong sense of justice. Take a character like that and give him a tendency to kill people when he loses control of his emotions, and you've got yourself some A+ internal conflict. That doesn't work if he has no agency in the things he does.

When I refer to a victim mentality, I'm not making a claim that he's not a victim--I'm referring to the fact that he's forgotten that he's not only a victim. Indeed, to some degree, he started out the series having forgotten that people who hurt him can also be victims. To take it further, other people can be his victims. That's just a fact of life about being a human being. It's certainly not his fault that his powers are dangerous, but I don't think it's as simple as him "going haywire." I don't think he's having a panic attack when he ends the world. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if he did the entire thing while dissociated. That's kinda what it looks like to me.

Now, dissociation is gonna be different for everyone, and I'm not sure if this is how it was intended, but to me, it doesn't feel like I've lost control of myself. To the contrary, I get very intense and goal-oriented when I dissociate. Viktor's sense of reality seems to be distorted, to the point where he is doing a lot of shit he would not have done the day before or the day after, so I would not be the least bit surprised if he was experiencing derealization. If you don't know what that's like...well, you do. If you've had a dream, you know exactly what derealization feels like. It literally feels like a dream. Now I want to be clear it feels like a dream. You are still in possession of all your mental faculties. Unless something else is confusing you, like if you just woke up or were falling asleep, you probably don't literally think you're dreaming? But that's just my experience. I tend to dissociate before and after a really bad panic attack, and as shitty an experience as it is, it's not part of a panic attack so much as it is protecting me from my panic attack. That's the mechanism, anyway. It ends up feeling like something I need protection from.

Derealization doesn't make you do things, but it does impair your judgment in my experience. When things don't feel real, it doesn't feel like there will be consequences to your actions. But, like with being drunk, you're not going to just randomly do shit you would never do otherwise. Like with being drunk, it's not an excuse for doing horrible shit. And while my memory and focus both suck when I'm dissociated, it suuuuper does not feel like being drunk. My ability to reason and logic is still there. My emotions are going haywire, but I'm not being destructive because I'm not a destructive person. Again, I don't have like, the definitive experience here, but it's the only experience I've got to talk about.

Is Viktor a destructive person when he's not losing it? When calm, and confident, under specific circumstances, he can be. He can be very frightening, and use it for the forces of good. Look at his conversation with Marcus. Do you think he was bluffing? I don't. And I think that's super cool, that he recognizes this side of himself now, but knows it doesn't have to be bad, or uncontrolled, or any of the things he feared it would be at the end of s2. He can listen to his emotions, take that sense of justice, and protect people.

A lot of this goes for Allison, too, btw. She was deeply emotionally compromised this entire season, but her actions were her own. None of the Hargreeveses have good emotion regulation (no, not even Five). Viktor's regulation is the worst because his emotions were chemically dampened his entire life. But being dysregulated does not mean you lose control of your actions, or your sense of right and wrong. When you're angry enough, you know it's wrong to say certain things or do certain things, but you're so angry, you stop caring that it's wrong. When you calm down, you feel awful.

Like Five explained to Viktor this season, that is the consequence of them having power. When they make mistakes, when they permit themselves the same moral indulgences other people get to have (like losing one's temper and yelling something one doesn't mean), people lose their lives for it. And because Viktor is very powerful, him lashing out the way normal people do every day winds up getting a lot of people killed. It's not that he's so evil, he destroyed the world. He had a couple of very, very bad days, and instead of screaming obscenities at the taxi driver who honked at him, he flung the entire taxi two blocks and presumably killed the guy. And if it didn't feel real to him at the time because he was dissociated, I would not be at all surprised. But that goes to show that a normal psychological mechanism in someone with powers still has vastly different consequences from what it has in a normal person. It's not that he's gotten correspondingly more evil, just that he pays for his mistakes differently than a non-powered person does.

And that's a hard, hard lesson to someone who dreamed of having superpowers all his life but also cried when his siblings stepped on ants.
