I wonder whart older Zuko is like with Izumi and Iroh II...
(yes this is a plea for more headcanons)
Zuko has a real problem with his daughter and grandson. They don't believe a word he says.
Well, okay, that's an exaggeration, and he'll admit it if you press him. They're actually very attentive and respectful, and are always looking for lessons in what he says, always asking him for advice. One time, just to test them, he tried the 'silver sandwich' speech again, or at least what he could remember of it, and they accepted it with eager nods. He had to persuade them not to have it written down in the Annuls of the Fire Lords.
What they don't believe is that he used to be an imperialist bully who took his anger out on the rest of the world. Oh, sure, they claim that they understand this, but as the discussion goes on they'll talk about how Zuko was raised in a different society where aggression was encouraged and imperialist racism was normal. With low, even voices to convey the seriousness of the matter, they'll talk about the abuse Zuko suffered from his father and what that does to a person, and how fortunate he was that he was able to find his way out from the negative emotions it buried him in. They'll even talk about the war and how children in the Fire Nation were prepared to be warriors and soldiers starting as toddlers.
Izumi, at least, needs these excuses in order not to really think that her father was A Bad Dude at one point. It's not that she's in denial or anything, or can't handle her father making mistakes. To her, Zuko is a doting father, a true and proper simp of a husband, the stiff awkward member of a heartwarming friendgroup, and a righteous leader who complains about corrupt politicians and inefficient meetings like any proper Hero King. Sure, he gets angry like any person, but she just does not have an imagination expansive enough to really picture him betraying Uncle Aang and Aunt Katara under Ba Sing Se. If she really tries, she imagines a confused, regretful look on his face. She just cannot properly meld Her Father with these facts that sound like an antagonist in a children's fantasy story.
With Iroh II, he just does not know his Grandfather well enough. He never saw Zuko in a truly angry moment. He has to picture some kind of noble, knightly figure with a furrowed brow from trying to work out the thorny, contradictory honor system of the old Fire Nation. If you told him that his grandfather once screamed, "I DON'T NEED ANY CALMING TEA!!" he would challenge you an arm-wrestling duel for spreading such filthy lies about a hero.
Zuko has tried to convince Izumi and Iroh that he could have become like Ozai, had it not been for some fortunate interventions in his life, and they nod appropriately, but he can see it's not landing. It's all theory to them, some philosophical stuff about the dichotomy of man. They don't get it. But, he supposes, they don't really need to. Izumi is a master of politics and has a firm grasp of how hazy morality can be sometimes, as well as a good sense of the delicate balance required of the Fire Nation given its power and legacy. If she can't quite believe he was as bad as he was, that's fine. And, he ha to admit, it makes him feel pretty good, that he really has gotten better.
Iroh II, though, is more of a problem. Or, at least, Zuko thinks he is, intellectually. On the practical side, Iroh II has done so well in his life that Zuko isn't sure his grandon needs to understand this stuff. Zuko is a bit worried about how well Iroh II will do as Fire Lord, but he admits that maybe he doesn't really understand his grandson, either.
Especially that part where Iroh II is such a fan of coffee. Zuko is no tea fanatic, and still believes it's basically hot leaf juice, but he thinks that's far more appetizing than hot bean-dirt stew.

love tropes with the bat family
characters: bruce wayne, richard "dick" grayson, barbara gordon, jason todd, timothy "tim" drake, stephanie brown, cassandra cain, duke thomas, and damian wayne
bruce wayne
arranged marriage
• the marriage was arranged by his parents and your parents to merge the two most powerful families in gotham, providing both financial stability and social influence. bruce only went along with it because he wanted to honor his parents’ last wishes.
• initially, there's a distance between the two of you. he’s so consumed by his quest for justice and his role as batman, that he doesn’t really have the time to truly get to know you. meanwhile, you’re just trying to understand your role in his life.
• publicly, the two of maintain the appearance of the perfect, high-society couple, attending galas and charity events. behind closed doors, the two of you sleep in separate beds and barely talk to one another.
• alfred becomes a mentor and confidant to the both of you, helping your navigate your new life together and offering uncle iroh level advice.
• it isn’t until you get hurt, that he begins to realize the depth of his feelings for you.
• DEFINITELY says the, "who did this to you?" line.
• this marriage brings a new dynamic to his life. you have your own skills and resources and you become an integral part of his crime-fighting efforts.
• your presence in his life helps him heal emotionally, offering him a sense of family and home. this support strengthens him, making him a more balanced and effective hero.
• you both work towards a shared vision for gotham, combining your immense resources and influence to create lasting change, honoring the legacies of both your families. <33
Tumblr media
richard "dick" grayson
you fell first, he fell harder
• charming and attractive, it’s hard to not fall in love with dick grayson. he’ll flirt and send compliments someone’s way, effectively tampering with their feelings. it’s no surprise when you find yourself having romantic feelings for him.
• despite your best efforts to keep your feelings hidden, dick starts noticing the little things—how you laugh at his jokes a bit too eagerly, how your eyes linger on him a bit longer, and how you're always there to lend a hand.
• as you spend more time together, you can't help but be more obvious about your feelings. you find excuses to be near him, offer to help with his missions, and bring him coffee during late-night patrols.
• one day, during a particularly dangerous mission, you do something reckless to save him. that’s the final push he needs to confront and confess his feelings for you.
• ANGRY LOVE CONFESSIONS>>>
• he never noticed you. but now that he had, he couldn't un-notice you.
• once you find your way into his heart, it’s hard for him to let you go. more and more, he starts finding himself constantly wishing for your presence.
• he constantly tells you how much you mean to him and how he can't imagine his life without you.
• this man met you, fell in love with you, and has been falling ever since. <33
Tumblr media
barbara gordon
the korrasami trope (i didn’t know what else to call it)
• both of you had feelings for dick, but he ultimately chose you. after he made his decision, she began to act extremely cold towards you.
• despite this, you constantly went out of your way to ensure that she didn’t feel left out. you included her in activities and made an effort to show her that your relationship with dick didn’t have to affect your friendship with her.
• she becomes jealous when she sees you and dick together and for the longest time, she thought she was jealous of you because you were him. she soon realizes that she was actually jealous of HIM because he was with you.
• during the times when dick was busy with his duties as nightwing, the two of you would often find yourselves alone together. these moments of forced proximity brought you closer, and that’s when she started to develop feelings for you.
• you start to notice subtle changes in her behavior around you. she becomes more attentive, goes out of her way to spend time with you, and shows a genuine interest in your well-being.
• she struggles with her feelings for you, torn between her loyalty to dick because of their friendship and her growing love for you.
• girlie is down HORRENDOUSLY for you. <33
Tumblr media
jason todd
enemies to lovers
• you hate jason, he hates you. just the thought of him irritates your whole being, shakes your bones in anger, his name leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.
•this man will NEVER stop bothering you, he likes to see you stressed out and angry, but he lowkey thinks it’s cute that’s why he likes to piss you off.
• you intrigue him, when he started to bother you he was legit hating on you but as time flew by, he somehow liked your attention on him.
• being an annoying piece of shit= your attention.
• despite your differences and the fact that you and jason mixed like oil and water, on in the field, you guys grudgingly tolerated each other, working together to take out your enemies.
• the tension between the two of you is so thick that during mission briefs, bruce has to seat you guys across the room from each other, unless he wants to hear mumbled insults back and forth and glaring between you guys.
• the rest of the bat family teases the two of you relentlessly because they’re convinced that you guys are the perfect match for one another (they’re absolutely right).
• when he finally realizes that he has feelings for you, he tries to convince himself that he doesn’t in fact like you romantically but that he was just admiring your skills in the field.
• he actually finds himself looking out for you on missions, even though he won’t be upfront about it.
• he becomes somewhat awkward to be around, and the rest of the bat family immediately capitalize off this to bully him with it. but regardless, he finds himself drifting towards you a bit more, and picking up on some of your habits. as much as he hates to admit it, he wants to know more about you. <33
Tumblr media
timothy "tim" drake
friends to lovers
• tim heavily values trust and loyalty. as friends, you’ve always been someone he can rely on, whether it's sharing secrets or working through problems together.
• despite being one of his best friends, he isn't overly expressive with his emotions. he shows his affection through small, thoughtful gestures – bringing you coffee, remembering your favorite snacks, or staying up late to help you with something.
• he gradually comes to the realization that he has feelings for you. once it hits him, he begins to avoid you, trying to process everything.
• however, he starts to get like physically sick because he misses you so much. plus, you called him to ask if they'd done anything wrong and the pain in your voice was too much for him to bear.
• it was impossible to ignore the change in his behaviour. for one, he couldn't speak to you in person without his face turning blindingly red. plus, not only does he struggle to look you in the eye, but he is also CONSTANTLY stuttering around you.
• when you decide to confront him about it, he kind of just blurts out that he’s in love to you. much to his genuine surprise (but literally no one else's), you told him that they loved him too.
• sometimes, he feels like an idiot for not saying or doing something about it sooner. you frequently tease him for not having picked up on his own feelings sooner— but for once, he graciously accepts it. <33
Tumblr media
stephanie brown
fake dating
• after your ex breaks up with you, steph devises a plan to get back at them and make them jealous.
• the two of you were already best friends so it couldn’t be that hard. right? RIGHT?
• you’re both aware that damian doesn’t buy your little arrangement one bit. he just doesn’t believe that the two of you are dating because you’re such good friends. (and they were roommates!!!)
• steph has this raging pride when it comes to damian, so she’s made it her personal mission to convince him that you and her are actually dating.
• it takes a while for you two to get into the hang of it, but once you do, it’s like a regular routine.
• steph would definitely fall for you first. she’d hide her feelings behind your little charade, until the fake dating stuff starts extending into the time you two share together when no one else is watching.
• she still gravitates towards you on the couch when everyone has left after dinner at your place, pressing kisses to your cheek when she leaves even though everyone else is already gone. there’s no need to continue acting like this but she does.
• the fake dating thing really starts hurting her because she thinks that you don’t really like her like that (you do) but its nice to pretend that you do in those moments, that it’s all real even though it's not.
• the people who know of your secret knows that steph has fallen for you (except for steph herself, and you because you refuse to believe it).
• like, come on, she’s your BEST FRIEND (side eye). the two of you are idiots in love.
• the moment she realizes she’s in love with you is on another one of those dates that you both know you don’t have to go on but still choose to have anyway (your ex is already clearly jealous).
• she’s been getting this small tugging feeling with you a lot over these past few months.
• now she finally realizes it’s because she’s in love with you. <33
Tumblr media
cassandra cain
childhood best friends to lovers
• growing up, you became adept at reading her body language and expressions, creating a deep, intuitive understanding between the two of you.
• as kids, you both trained together, pushing each other to become stronger and better. these sessions were filled with friendly competition, laughter, and mutual support.
• you two had a secret hideout where you would escape to whenever the world felt overwhelming. it was a place filled with memories, laughter, and dreams for the future.
• whenever she had nightmares or struggled with her past, you were always there to comfort her. your presence became a source of peace and security for her.
• you both shared a love for a watching old martial arts films and cooking together. these activities brought you even closer over the years.
• once she was settled into her new life with the bat family, she reconnected with you over lunch and there was a moment where it all clicked. her heart nearly gave out the moment she saw you walk through the cafe door and smiled at her.
• she was in love with you. she had been for a while now. but back then, she had taken your presence for granted. it was something she just expected to be there. but now? now it was different. now it made sense.
• it was a very natural progression from a friendship to a relationship. she felt safe with you, and she never had to worry about being misunderstood. after everything that she’s been through, you were the person who stood by her through all of it. <33
Tumblr media
duke thomas
brother’s best friend
• one thing about you and duke is that you can both take a secret to your grave.
• no one ever finds about him sneaking out of your brother’s room during their weekend sleepovers, to cuddle up to you on your bed.
• no one finds out about the secret dates you go on in the next town over, so that you don’t get caught.
• no one finds out about the secret phones you both use to contact each other.
• if you have to be in the same room together, he’s not even making any eye contact with you. it’s better to ignore each other in public.
• it would be WAY too obvious that the two of you are dating.
• when you guys are seven months into the relationship, cuddling on his bed, he asks "how long do you want to keep us a secret?"
• to which you reply, "not any longer than you want to."
• so yeah, you can both keep a secret– until you decide you want to share it to the world.
• your brother is disgusted, but happy for you. emphasis on disgusted tho. <33
Tumblr media
damian wayne
academic rivals to lovers (except he’s been in love with you this whole time)
• damian has always admired you from afar. everything from your biting wit to your competitive spirit always made his heart flutter. falling in love with you was almost inevitable.
• sarcastic, creative remarks as comebacks to one another’s argument, teasing and joking words that lead to banters and bickering.
you: "are you reading?"
damian: "it’s amazing how you have eyes but never see the use of them."
• you don’t know if it’s due to your clashing beliefs and ideas that you two just can’t get along. or is it because he just refuses to do so? eitherway, he still irks you off in multiple ways. even when it’s just the sound of his breathing.
• the two of you compete against each other in terms of being the best among you, as such your relationship is treated as something simply born and made by a competition, an unnatural way to form a connection with another but that’s just how it is.
• the fact that you two work really well when it comes to projects and research is something that can’t be denied. even when there are countless arguments being shared because of differences in opinion, you two still end up getting the work done flawlessly.
• despite everything, there was never a time that you two have touched on a sensitive subject while arguing or have you two have said anything personal and mean that it crossed the line. it’s just some useless and close-to-nothing banters that always occur— becoming a part of your daily routine.
• and of course, the two of you don’t lose your sense of academic "rivalry" when you two start dating. <33

•••
“Tell me again,” Zuko breathes into the kiss.
“What?”
“Tell me you hate me.” he pulls away for a moment and waits for you.
“I hate you.”
“I love you.” he responds breathlessly, smashing his lips against yours. This time he’s impatient, kissing you like he’s running out of time or like you’re going to be taken away and this is his last moment with you.
•••
You take a deep breath in an attempt to calm yourself. Was Zuko always this loud of a chewer? Seriously, in this entire large dining room, where he is sitting several feet away from you across the table, you can still hear him chewing on his stupid steak. Zuko was a loud chewer, a lousy cook, and an even lousier husband.
It has been nearly a year since the two of you wed in an arranged marriage and you’ve hated every second of it since those stupid wedding bells went off. Your father was a governor in the Fire Nation, and often helped out Zuko with his royal duties. Him and Zuko’s uncle Iroh were good friends, and when it came time for Zuko to find a wife, you just so happen to be at the right age of marrying and available. Although you had fought and protested the marriage, once your father made a decision, he would never go back on it. Even if the decision was to marry off his daughter to the new Fire Lord.
You hated everything about being royalty. From the fancy parties and charities to all the socializing you were required to engage in with old conservative firebending weirdos, to the stupid sham wedding and fake kisses with Zuko. Sure, it was nice living in the palace and having people cook for you and dress you up in pretty clothes, but you hated everything else. You hated socializing and partying, you hated being the Fire Lord’s wife, and you hated all the dumb royal duties you were required to do. It would be a lot easier to do all these things if you actually liked Zuko, but everything about him irked you.
He may have found himself during his teenage years, but he was still easily angered and hard headed. Not to mention he was still moping around and crying about his ex, Mai. She had already moved on and found someone new, but you knew Zuko was still upset he had messed up their relationship. Even though every time you confronted him about it he denied it, you were so sure he was still hurting from it and thinking about it. The blank stares and passing looks he gave to her with a softness in his eyes he had never given you made it so obvious he was lying. And even though you didn’t harbor any sort of romantic feelings for him, it still hurt that he was looking at Mai like that and thinking of her.
From the start of his reign, Zuko wanted Mai to be his wife, and not you, for very obvious reasons. It helped that he liked her and had already had history with her, so when you showed up and people were telling him that he was marrying you and not Mai, he had blamed it on you. He knew it would be better for his duty to put his feelings aside and marry you out of convenience, but he hated the idea of marrying someone he didn’t love. Being with someone he didn’t love.
“Zuko,” you started, trying hard to keep yourself from slamming your silverware on the dining table. “Will you please stop chewing so loudly?” you ask politely.
“I’m not chewing loudly.”
“Yes, you are.”
“You can’t even hear me! You’re sitting so far away from me!” his voice echoed through the large room.
“Exactly. I’m sitting so far away from you, but I can still fucking hear you.” you emphasized, rolling your eyes.
“Well, if it bothers you that much, feel free to eat somewhere else.”
You could practically feel your blood pressure rising. “Oh please, you think I haven’t tried doing that before? Your stupid advisors won’t let me eat anywhere else because we’re married, so we should be eating together.”
“Then stop complaining.”
“Maybe stop chewing so damn loudly and I won't complain.” you sigh, angrily blowing a stray strand of hair out of your face. You were beginning to feel heated and upset. All you wanted to do was eat your dinner in peace and go back to your bedroom, but his stupid loud chewing and stupid stubbornness just had to get in the way.
A familiar silence entered the room and you took in another breath, deciding to try and quickly finish your food so that you could just leave. There was no point in trying to fight with Zuko; you wouldn’t get what you want anyway.
“Do you ever stop sighing?” Zuko asked, and you felt something snap inside of you. You stood up abruptly, the steak knife you were using to cut your food flying towards his face. You had thrown the knife at him in anger, and hoped that it would hit him. Unfortunately, his fast reaction helped him and he moved to the side, swiftly avoiding your fast knife.
“What a shame,” you pushed out your chair and it squeaked against the polished floors. “I could’ve given you another scar on your stupid face.” you began making your way towards the door.
“Maybe if you had better aim you could’ve,” he replied, calmly going back to munching on his food as your eye twitched in annoyance.
•••
You couldn’t sleep. You had spent the last half hour tossing and turning and you still couldn’t fall asleep. Irritated, you decided that you were going to take a walk around the palace gardens to help calm you. In the time you’ve spent at the palace gardens so far, you began to make an effort to learn more about the plants and flowers and their meanings. You began to find it interesting the many messages you could send to someone through flowers, and hoped that someday you’d get a meaningful message through flowers from someone.
You had thrown a robe over your light and sheer nightgown, and headed to the gardens. Since coming to the place, the gardens have been the only place of peace for you. This was the only space that didn’t have guards wandering around its perimeter 24/7 so that you could have a little privacy. You breathed in the crisp midnight air as you opened the gate at the entrance. You had been walking around and smelling the flowers when you heard a faint voice.
Zuko.
“Please,” you heard him plead to someone, and you hid behind a small bush nearby in hopes to hear more of the conversation. If there was one thing you were going to do, it was snoop. The palace had so much drama going on between the staff and royal members of the family, it was impossible to keep your nose out of it.
“Don’t leave,” he continued and you knew exactly who he was talking to. Mai.
You had never heard Zuko speak so softly and gently to someone it was almost as if it was out of character for him. Or maybe he just always spoke to you with such hatred and annoyance.
“No,” you heard her reply. “Is this seriously what you called me out here for? Get a life, Zuko. I’m leaving.”
Wait, that was it? That was everything she was going to say to him? You quietly chuckled to yourself; Mai sounded so over it and annoyed you were almost embarrassed for Zuko. When you saw her leave the gardens, you noticed Zuko sit on a nearby bench. Smiling to yourself, you took the opportunity to poke fun at him and make him feel bad. Who cares if it’s mean? It made you happy, and that’s all that matters really.
“What a pathetic loser,” you stepped out from your hiding bush and he turned to face you, his face furrowed in anger and annoyance.
“What are you doing here?! Did you overhear all that?!” his voice was back to his normal angry tone.
“Not all of it, just the end.” you sat down next to him. “What, were you begging for her to come back to you? Begging for her to love you again? Oh you poor thing, maybe if you weren’t such a horrible boyfriend, she wouldn’t have left you.” you teased arrogantly, looking up to watch the moon.
“You don’t know anything about love.” he grumbled. “You threw a knife at me during dinner. And that’s not what I was doing. I wasn’t asking her to come back to me.”
“Uh huh. I wouldn’t have thrown a knife at you if I loved you. I did it because you deserve it. And anyway, what would people think if they saw you and her together?”
“Nobody saw.”
“Oh, but I did.”
“You’re a nobody.”
“I’m a nobody?” you laughed sarcastically. “As far as everyone knows, I’m the Fire Lord’s wife. What would people think of you if word got out that you were meeting your ex-lover in the middle of the night even though your first year marriage anniversary is coming up? Imagine what people would think and say about you…” you trailed off, you were sure he got the message.
You weren’t warning him of his careless actions because you cared about him, but because you cared about yourself and yourself only. If this did come out and people would start gossiping, the people would start pitying you and feeling bad. You already didn’t like that you were only known as the Fire Lord’s wife, so you’d feel even more annoyed if you were known as the Fire Lord’s poor wife who got cheated on.
He was quiet, which meant he knew you were right. Although you and Zuko never got along, he knew when to admit defeat. And he did so with silence. After taking a moment to think to himself, he finally broke the silence.
“Why are you even here anyways? Stalker much?” he eyed your pajamas. “And you’re out here in your nightgown? Go back inside!”
“What? I’m wearing a robe, you can’t even see anything!”
“You idiot, if someone sees us, they might think we’re fucking in the gardens.”
“HA! Please, I’d rather jump off a cliff than fuck you. And if you’re so aware that anybody can see us, you should’ve taken that into consideration before you brought your ex here. Dumbass.” you stood up, quickly turning away from him and walking away before he could say anything.
Zuko’s eyes followed you as he watched you step away, his eyes dropping down to the slight sway of your hips as you walked. “Pfft,” he said to himself as he rolled his eyes. “She walks so arrogantly.” he whispered before forcing his eyes to look somewhere else.
•••
It was that time of the year again. A stupid Fire Nation festival called Sparring Day, or whatever. Essentially, it was just a festival where the best firebenders of the nation put on a show and play with fire and pretend to fight each other for charity. The proceeds for the tickets went to charity and although that was the only part you liked about it, you dreaded going. Sure, this was the first time you were attending as a member of the royal family, but you still hated when your parents dragged you to the festival every previous year. Aside from the charity part (the only good part), it was mostly just a bunch of old lame shirtless dudes throwing fire at each other.
This year though, was different. It was Zuko’s first year where he participated in the festival himself. You thought the festival was supposed to be for the best of the best, so why the hell was Zuko going to be in it? Sure, the original benders of Fire, the dragons, passed down the way of firebending to him and Aang, but that didn’t mean he was good, or whatever. He still sucked ass, in your opinion. Maybe you’re not one to be saying this since you’re not a bender, but you were Zuko’s number one hater.
You were sitting on the stands in the audience with the Avatar and his friends, frantically fanning yourself. The sun was practically cooking everyone alive, but they still went on with the stupid festival.
“LOOK!” Sokka exclaimed excitedly, frantically pointing at the stage below. “They’re setting up dummies for Zuko to burn!”
“I hope he misses.” you roll your eyes, fanning yourself as you wipe the sweat from your forehead.
“Aww, don’t say that! That would hurt his honor.” Toph jokes, earning a laugh from everybody. You quietly smirk to yourself in response; people’s eyes were on you, so you had to act elegant and proper, like the palace ladies always tell you to do.
The blow of a horn signifies that the show is starting, and you see a lineup of several fire benders enter the stage.
Shirtless.
Including Zuko.
Your seat is high up above the stage, so you can’t see many details, but your eyes unconsciously check his body out. You knew Zuko was fit and lean, but you had never seen him shirtless. Aside from dinner or public events, you and Zuko almost were never in each other’s presence. You don’t even sleep in the same room, so you had never seen him shirtless.
You force yourself to look away from him; he wasn’t the only shirtless fire bender on stage after all. As the event begins, you watch the men perform a form of fire bending—what you assume to be the Dancing Dragon, and people begin to holler and cheer. You look away and doze off; you’ve seen this a million times in previous years. When they finish, an announcer starts speaking, and almost immediately brings everyone’s attention to you up in the stands.
“Where is she?! There she is!” he points upwards at you, and your heart stops for a second.
“Doesn’t everyone want to see Fire Lord Zuko perform up close and personal for his beautiful wife?!” he asks the crowd, and everyone cheers.
“HELL YEAHHHH!!!” Sokka screams, and you smack his arm.
“OW! Come on, don’t you want to see him up close in all his fire glory?!” he asks you, his eyes lit up with excitement.
“Not really.”
“BRING HER DOWN!” Sokka yells back at the announcer and the crowd hollers again in amusement.
You purse your lips together in irritation. You know Sokka wants to see you in misery, so you make sure to step on his foot on your way down from the stands, smiling to yourself as he yells in pain.
It’s a lot hotter once you get down to the stage. There’s no cool shade you can sit under and the flames from the torches and other benders make it even hotter. The announcer drags a chair for you to sit on center stage, and Zuko comes up to stand beside you.
You try not to look too much or make it obvious, but out of the corner of your eye you watch him struggle to catch his breath as he stands there—shirtless and sweaty. His abs are so beautifully defined and it’s obvious the work he’s put in to achieve that. His pecs are glistening in sweat and the sun rays are shining so brightly on him like he’s some God. He runs his hands through his long locks of hair, messing it up so easily but he still looks so effortlessly handsome.
You’re staring—stop staring. Zuko is going to notice. The announcer is going to notice when he stops talking about whatever it is he’s talking about. Look away. You can’t look away. If you stare more, Zuko will notice and it will be weird.
Stop staring.
It’s too late; he's taken notice of your gaze. He looks down, his sharp eyes bore into yours as he stares back down at you. You don’t know what he is thinking, or maybe you just don’t see it because the sun is in your eye. But he’s looking back at you almost seductively, but maybe you’re just imagining that and it’s probably just the sun. But he’s never looked at you before like this; usually he can’t hide his feelings of hatred and dislike in his eyes, but this time none of that is there. Your best guess is because the two of you are in public and he’s actively trying not to look at you that way.
“—will perform a fire bending performance he prepared in advance for his beautiful wife!” you snap back to reality, breaking eye contact with Zuko and looking back at the announcer.
A performance he prepared in advance for you? Please, what a load of bullshit that was. You knew that was just something the palace told him to say to continue to sell your cheap fake love story with Zuko.
The performance begins, and other fire benders join the stage again to show off their moves with fire alongside Zuko. Fire is dancing in the air and all around you and it feels a million times hotter and a million times more miserable because of the stupid heat. You’re not enjoying it at all, but you keep a smile on your face to fool the people. Your eyes found a way to follow Zuko’s movements: he is smooth, athletic and agile, and elegant. You had to admit he looked good fire bending, but you’d never say that. It had to be because he’s probably been practicing. It feels like a million more years until the stupid dance finally ends and Zuko holds his hand out to you to escort you back to the stands, but not before the announcer disrupts you two.
“Woah woah woah, where are you going so early?!” he stops the two of you from stepping off the stage.
“Tell me dear,” he looks at you then gestures to the audience. “What did you think of Fire Lord Zuko and his amazing performance?”
You barely paid any attention to it. “It was amazing! I always love watching him firebend.” your response is automatic, and so is the exciting smile you put up for everyone to holler and cheer at.
“She loved it, folks! Zuko, how are you feeling right now?”
“I’m happy she liked it, I worked hard to impress her.” His response and smile is just as automatic and fake as yours was.
“Wonderful, wonderful! Well, folks, what’re we thinking! A little kiss of appreciation between our lovely couple?”
Your heart practically drops to your stomach, and you feel Zuko’s hand tighten around yours. It’s not like you’ve never kissed him in public before, you have multiple times. But all those times were calculated and carefully planned out. This is a spontaneous kiss in front of thousands of people. Your hand feels a little sweaty, so you let go, but you quickly turn to Zuko and face him. You react quicker than him, standing on your tippy toes and tilting your chin up to give him easier access.
“Well?” you feel like throwing up. “Aren’t you going to kiss me, Zuko?” you feel yourself cringe.
The crowd is loud, but Zuko quickly adjusts. “So eager to kiss me now, are we?” he automatically leans down and presses his lips against yours.
Soft. Supple. Zuko didn’t think he would really feel the kiss out, and usually he didn’t, but this was the first time he noticed how good it felt to kiss you. Or maybe it was the rush of adrenaline he got from moving around. Yeah, probably that.
It’s almost as if his lips have a mind of his own and refuse to listen to him, because he’s tilting his head to kiss you more deeply and one of his hands are entangling themselves in your hair and the other is moving down to the small of your back as he holds you closer to himself. He can feel the erratic thumping of his heartbeat, fast and panicked.
People in the crowd are yelling louder now, hyping up the two of you as you kiss and you pull away. You look at him, cheeks colored with pink and droopy eyes. He’s never had any sort of reaction to kissing you before, so why now? You figured he was blushing because of the heat; after all it was really hot.
•••
“You looked like you hated the performance,” Zuko observes out loud as he leads you back to the stands. The two of you mutually decided to go back to the stands through the palace halls instead of outside to get some cool air as a break.
“What do you think? You were front and center of the whole thing, of course I hated it.” you reply.
“Why were ogling at me then?” he looks down at you and smirks.
Did he notice you staring at him earlier? Jesus, of course he did, you were so obvious! You do a mental facepalm, embarrassed he noticed.
“I wasn’t ogling; you just smelled gross, you were all sweaty. That’s all.”
“That’s not what I saw.”
“You saw wrong. Humble yourself for once.”
It’s quiet for a beat, then you decide to poke fun at his reaction to kissing you.
“You liked the kiss that much, huh?”
He stops in his tracks. “What? That was just for show.”
“Really? Then why were you all blushy and red?”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” he sounds serious. “It’s hot as hell outside, so don’t get your hopes up just because I can give the people a good kiss. It was all an act.”
You don’t know why, but you felt a little disappointed at what he said. Sure, it was true, but it still tugged at your heart a bit.
“Really?”
“Really.”
He’s walking again, but you have the absurd idea to test if what he said is true. Grabbing him by his arm, you tug him towards you with force, and when he leans down to you the slightest, you lean up to kiss him.
Zuko freezes in place. He panics, unsure of what to do or how to feel in the moment. It all happened too fast—the grabbing, the kissing, the—why is his heart beating fast? He’s unable to think, mind and heart cloudy with confusion. Why were you kissing him? And why was he kissing you back? He normally doesn’t find himself lost in kissing you, but that’s exactly how he was feeling right now. It’s like his head was empty and the only thing he could focus on was the sweet taste of your lips.
Oh, God.
Oh no.
No.
No.
No.
Zuko was leaning into you again, but this time with more passion. It felt rushed, like he was in some sort of hurry to get as close to you as he physically could. His hands couldn’t help but hold your face, gently grabbing your chin to tilt your head into the kiss. God, your skin was so soft and felt so nice to rub. He softly moves his lips against yours, his nose brushing against yours as he continues to kiss you. It’s like his body has a mind of its own, acting on its own desires and refusing to listen to his head. He feels your hands grab at his neck, wrapping around his throat as you forcefully push him away from you.
Zuko coughs for a second, stepping back in surprise, his hand coming up to rub his neck.
“Did you just choke me?” he accuses you.
“You did like the kiss!” you point a finger at him, a victorious smile planted on your lips. You wanted to test out and see if it was because of your kiss that he was all red and blushy, and you were right.
“What?” He feels his cheeks heat up. “No, no I did not. Why did you kiss me? Then choke me?”
And why did he kind of like it?
“To prove my point.”
“What point?” he was still thinking about your hands on his throat.
“You liked the kiss! That’s why you were all red in the face like you are right now,” you told him arrogantly. “And I didn’t choke you, I just grabbed you by the neck to push you away. Why, you got a thing for being choked?”
“No!” Maybe. “That’s absurd.” I wouldn’t mind trying it out. “Let’s just go.”
You watch him walk ahead of you, your eyes shifting from his back to the tip of his red ears.
•••
There was going to be a ball. Another stupid ball where you would have to dress up (the only fun part) and socialize with nobles and other random rich people. Sometimes, you’d fake being sick in order to skip out on these balls, but tonight was a celebratory ball for your first year of marriage with Zuko. A miserable first year. You roll your eyes, cringing at the thought that it would be like this for the rest of your life. Although you had accepted it long before the wedding, every time you thought about it, it still managed to upset you.
“Are you comfortable?” one of your maids asked you as she adjusted your dress.
“Not really,” you had a sudden thought. “Actually, I’m feeling a bit ill…”
“You cannot skip your anniversary ball, your majesty.” she spoke. She knew exactly what kind of excuse you were trying to pull.
You roll your eyes in annoyance. “Fine.”
As your maids finished dressing you up, you were instructed to meet Zuko before the ball so that the two of you could arrive together. Your maids walked you to the entrance before the ball, where you saw Zuko standing there alone waiting for you.
“Took you long enough,” he complained.
You looked towards the door, the loud music making its way through the closed doors. “Well at least I look good. You, however, look like you just rolled out of bed. As usual.”
He ignored your sarcastic comment. “Look, tonight we need to act in love, so none of that attitude you always give me.”
“We’ve been doing this for a year now; I think I know how it works. And anyway, it shouldn’t be too hard for you to act in love with me.” you lectured him.
“A part of my soul dies every time I have to kiss you or even look at you lovingly.”
“Please, what soul?”
As Zuko looked down at you to respond, one of his advisors stopped him. The two of you looked behind you to see Jia, a frail elderly woman Zuko often sought out for advice.
“Ahem, um, maybe it would be better to separate the two of you for now. Fire Lord Zuko can enter first,” she then turned to you with a sweet smile. “We’ll just have you enter from the top of the staircase into the ballroom when it begins. Everyone’s eyes will be on your beautiful gown then.”
•••
Zuko was chatting with a couple nobles about the cabbage market, pretending to be engrossed in their conversation to kill time, but he was really just dozing off and staring into space. If there was one thing he had in common with you, it was that the two of you disliked ballroom parties. When a musical horn went off to call the attention of all guests, he looked towards the top of the staircase where he knew you’d be entering.
“Everyone, please welcome Fire Lord Zuko’s wife!” someone chanted, and people began to clap and cheer.
He watched you emerge from a door, only to notice that you had changed your appearance. Your dress was more casual, you were wearing shoes that looked more comfortable, and you had left your hair down.
Perhaps it was the alcohol he had been sipping on, or the loud music, or everyone cheering and clapping at the same time, but for once since meeting you, he felt his heart skip a beat at the sight of you. Your skin was glowing and your hair was so perfectly bouncy and lucious it was difficult for him to look anywhere else. It was as if there was nothing and no one else to look at but you. He felt the thump in his chest and was unable to focus on anything else until he had been staring for too long and you were already in front of him.
She looks beautiful… for once. That’s new.
He was admiring your beauty again, sharp eyes focused on your face, noticing all the details on your face, details he had never noticed before. He was sure you probably thought he was glaring at you, but really—he was in awe. He had never seen you look so comfortable in something the palace ladies dressed you in.
His eyes were practically glued to your figure and he was having trouble snapping himself out of the sort of trance you put him under. He was feeling weak in the knees and could feel himself unsteady, you looked beautiful. Too beautiful.
Beautiful wasn’t even a good enough word to describe how stunning you looked. Ethereal, ravishing, alluring, bewitching—none of these words were enough to describe your beauty. None of them did you justice. To him, your beauty was thousands of times more beguiling than the flowers in the palace gardens you spent all your free time looking at. If he were to choose to either look at you or the flowers for an eternity, he would choose you.
And God, did he hate that. He hated the way he was looking at you right now. He hated the way that he knew he couldn’t even hide how attracted he was to you. He hated the way he couldn’t even find the right words to describe how beautiful you looked, he hated how he couldn’t pull his eyes from you no matter how hard he tried, and he hated the way that you didn’t even know how beautiful you are.
“Zuko,” you bowed politely, and his eyes couldn’t help but follow you as you moved.
He snapped back out of your trance and shook his head. It had to be the alcohol. He probably had too much and that’s why he was feeling shaky and nervous, not because his jaw almost dropped seeing how breathtakingly beautiful you looked. He blamed the alcohol. There was no way he would feel this way if he were sober. He was tipsy. He had to be.
“You look nice,” he began, knowing everyone’s eyes and ears were on the two of you. I can’t take my eyes off of her.
“That’s it?” he watched you fake a chuckle. “I’m not beautiful?” If he didn’t know your real personality, he would’ve believed your fake laugh and fake smile you had plastered on your face right now.
“You look beautiful as always,” he replied. Has she always been so pretty? Normally he would’ve felt himself cringe and had the urge to vomit calling you attractive, but this time he said it as if he actually meant it. He did mean it.
Had to be the alcohol.
He felt you grab hold of his arm as he led you to the center of the ballroom and prepared to dance. As the guests formed a circle to watch the two of you dance, suddenly he felt a rise of panic in his chest. Normally he was used to people’s eyes on him and normally he was used to dancing with you and not making a big deal of it, but something about tonight was different.
It was the fact that you looked more like yourself when you had chosen to wear something that you felt more comfortable in and the fact that you wore your hair down which you almost never did in a ball for reasons he didn’t know and the fact that because you were so comfortable, your confidence was through the roof and he found himself drawn to that.
You feel Zuko’s hand snake around your waist as he pulls you in closer to him, your face dangerously close to his as you look into his amber eyes. It was like his eyes were drilling holes into yours: he was looking at you so intensely and with so much conflict swimming in his pupils if confused you. Was he mad at you or something? If he wasn’t, why was he looking at you as if he was and why was he gripping your waist so firmly like you were going to run away or something?
Your hand came up to rest on his shoulders, and on cue, the two of you began a waltz to the instrumental music. The two of you flowed so easily to the music, swaying with passion and chemistry. You lean in closer to him, knowing the guests would think you both are close and in love. You watched everyone’s eyes on you, admiring and watching as you know people thought you and Zuko were head over heels in love with each other.
Unlike how the two of you usually dance, Zuko began to feel stiff and tense, and you wondered why that was. This dance was no different than any other dance, so why was he acting like this?
You tilted your chin upwards to get closer to his ear so that only he would hear what you’re saying. “What’s wrong with you?” you whisper. “Why do you feel so stiff?”
“I’m not stiff,” he muttered passive-aggressively. He shuddered at the feeling of your hoarse whisper against his ear.
“Relax a little, Zuko, everyone’s watching.” you warned him and assumed he forced himself to relax because he loosened his grip on you and was able to finish the dance with no more issues.
After your dance with him, you speed off to the refreshments in need of a drink and left him in the dust. As you pop some chocolates in your mouth, your eyes watch the crowd. You’re scanning faces when your eyes meet a familiar pair of golden eyes.
Zuko.
His eyes bore into yours from across the ballroom. Though people walk across your line of vision and break your staring contest with Zuko, his eyes stay on yours, watching you.
No. Admiring you. Almost longing for you. Zuko’s gaze softens, eyes filled with tender love, and for a mere second you think he might actually be in love with you.
You can’t help but stare back. Why was he looking at you like that? Did he hate dancing with you so much that he had to throw you a death stare?
Although you question why he’s looking at you with so much passion, your heart can’t help but skip a beat. It feels like it’s about to leap out of your chest. It’s making you nervous. He’s making you nervous.
Zuko is making you nervous.
His eyes are still on you, watching your every move and even though people are trying to talk to him, he’s ignoring them. It was as if you were the only person in the room and he was begging for your attention with his eyes.
You are the first to break eye contact.
Displeased with the bland tastes of everything, you looked around and noticed a waiter walking around with a tray of drinks. Waving him over, you grabbed a glass from him and downed it. It was sweet and carbonated, something you’ve never tasted before. As you turned to him to grab one more, you noticed the waiter was already gone. Shrugging it off, you turned to the desserts to eat. You were in the middle of tasting a chocolate when Mai came up to you.
“What’s up with Zuko?” she asked, popping a cookie into her mouth and leaning against the table of food.
“Did you see how stiff he was?” you asked her, sneaking a look back at him, but he’s nowhere to be found. You and Mai had become friends sometime after they had broken up and she was one of the few people who gave you comfort after you were put into this arranged marriage with Zuko. It was something small, but something you thought about often and were extremely grateful for.
“Yeah, it was painful to watch. These people are stupid to not realize that.” she watched you, eyes darting around your face to read your expression. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, why?”
Her eyes started to grow in worry as she looked closer at your face. “You look, I don’t know. Hot and red. Not the good hot. The ‘you’re heating up’ hot. Are you sick?” she held the back of her hand to your forehead. “Oh my God, you’re heating up! It feels like you have a fever!”
“What?” you questioned, patting your cheeks and neck. You were burning up. “Oh shit,” as you were heating up, your eyesight began to blur and your head was getting dizzy.
“Hey!” you heard her start to yell, but her voice sounded faint. You struggled to stay on your feet, wobbling as Mai grabbed your shoulders to stabilize you. You looked around the room and Zuko was nowhere to be found. Everyone began to stare at you and ask if you’re okay, but everyone’s voices including Mai’s were becoming more and more faint and harder to hear. You tried to stay on your feet and she tried to keep you upright, but you couldn’t help yourself and it was like your body was beginning to shut down. Your vision was almost completely blurred and so was your hearing, and very soon your body shut down and you felt yourself fainting as you fell to the ground.
•••
Zuko was out of breath as he rushed through the ballroom, grabbing random people’s shoulders and asking where you were. Some people had explained in a panic that you fainted suddenly while he was in the bathroom, and that you were taken by some maids somewhere else. After he had found out you were in the private clinic in the palace, he exited the party in a rush, practically sprinting down the hallways of the palace. He felt himself functioning off his adrenaline as he ran to you in a panicked worry. He was only gone for a couple of minutes, and in those couple of minutes you had fainted? What the hell did you even do to get yourself in a situation like that? Reaching the clinic quickly, he slammed the doors open and saw his friends sitting in the lobby.
“Where is my wife?!” Zuko asked hurriedly in a state of panic and anger. How could this happen to you? Who could have caused something like this? Were you even okay?
“Zuko, you need to calm down first.” Aang said in an attempt to pacify him. Aang swore he saw fire burning in Zuko’s eyes and steam blowing out of his nose.
“Where is she?” he brushed the Avatar off, pushing him to the side as he opened one of the doors. He burst through and saw Katara healing you as you laid unconscious on the bed. Beside you was Mai, and as soon as he saw her, he couldn’t help but shift the blame to her and glare.
“What did you do?!” he turned his anger on Mai, stepping closer to her in annoyance.
Zuko wasn’t thinking straight (obviously) and was letting his emotions dictate his words and actions. Not knowing who the cause of your condition was pissing him off and hurting him more than he wanted it to.
“What? Are you stupid? I didn’t do anything! You should be thankful! She was poisoned and fainted, and I brought her here for some privacy!”
“Zuko, Mai only helped,” Katara calmly chimed in. “If you would please stop yelling, I could heal her faster.”
“Well, hurry it up!” he snapped as his eyes looked over your unconscious body. On any other normal day, Zuko wouldn’t have cared too much about you being poisoned, but tonight was different and he couldn’t figure out why.
The fact that someone—another human being—went out of their way to poison you didn’t sit right with him. Why would someone want to poison you and not him? He was unable to come up with a reason as to why someone would want to kill you, so he had to find out. He had to find who wanted you gone and had to figure out why. Because even though you both didn’t get along, it’s not like he wanted you dead. Even if he were the one poisoned and you’d be happy, he would never wish for something like this to happen to you; he was well aware you already hated the royal life.
Zuko felt his jaw clench in anger as he left the room, heading straight to a close advisor of his: Jia.
••
“Jia,” he knew she was always in the kitchens around this time at night, drinking tea. Oftentimes his uncle joined her, but not tonight.
“Hm?” she barely looked up from her tea as she stirred it calmly.
He stood there in front of her, hands in fists as he waited for some sort of reaction. You had just been poisoned in front of everyone, and this was how she was reacting?
“Hello?! My wife’s just been poisoned, and this is how you react?! Jia, my wife—”
“I already sent out a couple soldiers to search for the culprit, and they already have a lead on him. Apparently he was disguised as a waiter when she was poisoned.” she explained, and finally decided to look up at the distressed Fire Lord.
“I got on it as soon as it happened. Don’t worry, at this rate, we’ll have him in cuffs by the morning.” Jia’s quick action calmed Zuko’s nerves a bit, and he found himself wanting to sit with her to get himself together.
“She changed her clothes for the ball tonight,” he told Jia after pouring himself a cup of tea. “She looked different.”
“How so? All she did was ask to change her dress and leave her hair down.”
“I don’t know,” he shrugged. “Just less annoying, I guess.”
The elderly woman chuckled, warming her hands with her tea.
“She threw a knife at me the other night,” Zuko said to fill the silence when Jia didn’t reply. “A steak knife.”
“You two are a match made in heaven.”
He nearly choked on his tea and almost spat it out. As he coughed into his elbow, he could barely get a response out. “Match made in heaven? Jia, are you blind or something? I just said she threw a knife at me the other night! Were you not listening?!”
“You should go see her.” she spoke, ignoring his complaints.
“I already did.”
“Really?” she raised an eyebrow in response, surprised he even went to visit you in the first place. “I didn’t think you would.”
“I’m not heartless.”
“I never said you were.”
“She doesn’t want to see me.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes, I do. I know for a fact she will not want my presence there when she wakes up.”
“Well, maybe she doesn’t want you there physically. But, you could send a message to her another way.”
•••
Your massive headache was the only thing you could focus on as your eyes struggled to open. The pounding had you feeling cranky and groggy. You just wanted to go back to bed, but Katara insisted you sit up in bed and drink some water. Your lips feel dry and you feel shaky and weak as you force yourself to drink something.
“How long was I out?” you wipe your mouth with the back of your hand.
“Couple days. Mai brought you here. And she brought you flowers.” Katara gestured to the vase of flowers on your bedside table. Purple hyacinths.
You raised an eyebrow in confusion. Why was Mai apologizing with flowers? She didn’t even like flowers, and even if she did get them for you, her choice of purple hyacinths were bizarre. Purple hyacinths symbolize sadness, and asking for forgiveness.
“That’s nice,” you brushed it off; Mai probably didn’t even know the meaning of purple hyacinths. There was no need to overthink it. “Thanks for taking care of me.” you told Katara, looking up at her and seeing her eye bags. How long has she been there with you?
“No problem, get some rest.”
“You should too. You look like you haven’t been sleeping well. I’ll be fine on my own. If I need anything, I’ll call a nurse.”
“Are you sure? I don’t mind staying with you.”
“I’ll be fine,” you assured her.
When she nodded and stood up, she made sure to tell you she’ll visit once a day until you get better. You smiled at her; Katara was such a kind soul and friend.
•••
A couple more days passed and you were no longer bedridden after those days. You could finally muster up enough strength to get out of bed and walk around. In those couple of days, you were informed that the man who poisoned you was the waiter that served you a drink at the ballroom party. Thankfully, he was easily caught by soldiers who were sent out to search for him, and he was sitting in jail now as you recovered. You were told it was some scheme to try and hurt Zuko, but jokes on them because you and Zuko didn’t love each other. He didn’t even bother to come visit you or send someone to check on you. Not that it bothered you… it didn’t. You knew that you and Zuko didn’t get along, but you still felt your heart drop a little when Katara told you that he never stopped by, and that Mai was swinging by your room more to check on you.
You already knew Mai had been stopping by, because every day since you’ve woken up you noticed that there was a new vase of purple hyacinths sitting by you. You never saw Mai drop them off herself, so you assumed she did it in the early morning while you were still sleeping.
Even your husband’s ex-girlfriend cared more about your well-being than he did. Even though it was an arranged marriage and you and Zuko never wanted to be near each other, you probably still would have gone to see him if he was poisoned, so knowing he wasn’t doing the same for you tugged at your heartstrings a bit, but you didn’t want to admit it.
You shook your head in a physical attempt to shake Zuko from your thoughts. Standing up, you decided that you’d take a walk around the gardens for some fresh air. As you threw on a jacket, you stepped into your shoes and opened the door to leave. Stepping out from your room, you turn and see a disheveled Zuko sitting on a chair against the wall next to your door. When he notices you, he opens his mouth to say something, but he’s quiet. You look down at him, partly shocked but mostly annoyed. His hair looked messy and all over the place, he was dressed down, and he was holding a small blanket in his lap.
“What are you doing here? You look like you haven’t slept.” you tell him.
“Not much,” he weakly said, a clear tiredness laced in his voice. “I’ve been sleeping out here and waiting for you to come out.”
“Don’t you have anything better to do?” you retorted, walking away and not letting him respond.
Did he really expect you to believe that he had been sleeping out in the hallway these past couple days waiting for you? Did he think you were stupid? Sure, it looked like he was telling the truth, but you doubt he actually did it. Why would he anyway? The two of you didn’t like each other and never wanted to be around each other.
“Wait for me,” he pleaded, and started following your footsteps like a dog. “And no, I don’t have anything better to do.”
“How about running your country? Did you forget you’re the Fire Lord?” you rolled your eyes and made your way to the gardens as he followed after you.
Why was he still following you? Why was he acting like he actually loved and cared for you? It confused you and made your heart ache and you didn’t want to be around him. It was just too confusing and too much for you right now.
The gardens were empty like usual, so the only noise was your footsteps against the gravel and the chirping of the birds in the early morning. But of course, Zuko’s stupid loud footsteps just have to follow in your direction and ruin the entire mood.
“I couldn’t focus on anything else.”
You didn’t reply, instead choosing to walk faster in an attempt to shake him off. It was so obvious you didn’t want to be near him, so why wouldn’t he just take the hint and leave? You weren’t fully healed, so you were growing tired as you began walking in the garden’s maze in hopes to lose him.
“Fuck off.”
You felt your heart beating faster because you were feeling weak and tired again, but you ignored it and kept going. You didn’t want Zuko to bother you anymore. He calls your name once more, and his voice sounds faint so you know you’ve already begun to lose him in the maze.
Turning a corner to catch your breath, you grab your chest. Your vision was becoming hazy and it was hard staying on two feet. It was like you were poisoned again once more and you felt yourself wobbling and struggling to even stand. When Zuko calls your name again, it’s because he’s catching you as you fall to the ground.
He’s yelling your name again, but this time you can barely hear him and his face is becoming more blurry as the time passes. He’s shaking you and yelling your name, but your hearing is clouded and you feel yourself fainting in his arms, your eyes closing shut against your own will.
•••
When you awaken, the only sound in the room is the cackling fire by the bed you’re lying in. Except it’s not your bed. Sitting in a chair and half lying on the side of the bed is Zuko, sleeping soundly. You sit up and look around, the curtains are drawn so it’s almost completely dark in the room except for the fire going on the other side of the room.
It’s Zuko’s room.
You had never been in his room, but you could tell it was his from the portraits of his uncle and mother and a nearby wall and his dual swords sitting above the bed on the wall. Looking at his bedside table, you eye a book sitting on it.
Flowers & Their Meanings
Zuko reads?
You grab the book, noting a corner of a page folded in, and you flip to it. The page is titled ‘Purple Hyacinth’ and below was some written information on it. Your thoughts run back to when you had first awakened after being poisoned, back to your conversation with Katara.
No.
There was absolutely no way it was Zuko that brought those flowers to you. Katara said it herself that Mai brought those flowers. You did think that it was weird for Mai to bring you flowers since she hated them, but Zuko? He hates you, and you hate him. So why on Earth would he bring you apology flowers? It didn’t make any sense.
“You saw the flowers?”
You flinch in surprise, shutting the book and setting it down on the nightstand. Zuko is awake now, and sits back up in his chair. Crossing his arms against his chest, he silently and awkwardly avoids your eyes.
“That was you?” you stare at him in disbelief.
“You think Mai would give you flowers?” he stares deeply into your eyes, and you have the urge to look away.
“That’s what Katara said.”
He sighs. “I told her not to tell you about them.”
“Why?”
“I thought you’d hate it if I visited, so I sent flowers instead. I told Katara to say it was someone else.”
Actually, you thought the flowers were sweet, but that was because you thought they were from Mai and not Zuko. You and Zuko never got along well, so why would he give you flowers? It didn’t make sense at all and was confusing you. Why was he so worried when you got poisoned and why has he been following you around like a lost puppy since you woke up?
“What is wrong with you?” you said without thinking.
“Huh?”
“You wait for me to awaken after being poisoned, you read a book about flowers to pick the right ones to send to me, then you won’t stop following me after I wake up? What the hell’s going on with you, Zuko? What happened to trying to get Mai to love you again, huh? What, now that you know you can’t have her, you’re paying attention to me now, is that it?” you were starting to feel furious, mostly out of confusion, but sadness as well.
The sudden shift in Zuko’s attitude had you feeling lost and had you questioning how you felt about him. Since you had gotten married, you didn’t enjoy being his wife, so now that things were changing, you were questioning why that was.
“No, stop. That’s not the truth at all. That’s far from the truth.”
“You’re a liar.” you stand up, stepping from his
warm bed sheets as you walk towards the door. He quickly catches up to you, closing the door with his hand from behind you. He’s standing close to you, too close you can feel his breath tickle the back of your neck.
“Let me explain.”
You take a deep breath, debating if you wanted to hear him out.
“Please,” he begs you, his voice small and careful. It was as if he was walking on eggshells around you. When you react with nothing but silence, he takes it as a cue to continue.
“Things have changed, okay?” he tells you, and you turn around to look up at him and face him.
You’ve never been so up close and personal with Zuko, not like this anyways. He smells clean, and you eye his loosely tightened robe—it’s not covering his body entirely. His chest is slightly exposed, heaving up and down as he nervously tries to control his breathing around you.
“Oh yeah? How so?” you keep your eyes trained on his chest, because if you look into his eyes, you might just give in to him.
“I know we’ve had our differences—” he begins.
“I never wanted to marry you.”
“I know, I felt the same way. Well, I did. I feel… differently now.”
“Different?” you look up at him with a glare, a hidden anger suddenly starting to rise to the surface the more you stare into his dumb pretty eyes.
“Listen, I never wanted to marry you either. And when we did get married, I hated it. I know you did, too. But I don’t know, recently—recently things have changed. In a good way. I don’t know if I’ve always felt this way, maybe I have, but I can’t help but be drawn to you. And it’s driving me absolutely insane. I thought I was insane. Because it’s like, every time I see you, I can’t help but fall for you. I can’t help but stare at you and I can’t help but want you.”
Zuko speaks with such honesty and passion there is no doubting his words, and that’s what pisses you off. It takes getting poisoned for him to realize he’s in love with you? Where the hell did that even come from?
“I hate you.” is all you can say, because you don’t know how to feel. You’re lost and confused and you don’t know how to handle it.
“I know you don’t,” he speaks softly, his hand coming up to tilt your chin upwards.
His eyes look like a brighter shade of his stupid golden eyes, and he’s staring into your soul so intensely it makes you shudder.
“I do. I do hate you.” you whisper, your voice shaking and unsure. God, you probably sounded like an idiot.
“Oh yeah?” his tone is mischievous as he leans in closer, his eyes lowering to your lips.
“Yes. I hate everything about you.”
“Say it again. Tell me you hate me.”
“I hate you.”
“I love you.”
Zuko leans in quickly, his lips meeting yours in an instant. You hesitate for a moment, relishing in his soft kiss. Its like time froze all around you and all you could think of was Zuko’s lips on yours and his large and soft hands coming up to gently stroke your cheeks.
His kiss is so innocent and sweet it pisses you off knowing how good he is at kissing. He leans into you, just barely pressing his chest to yours, and you can feel his heartbeat quicken. One hand is in your hair, combing through the soft strands as his other hand holds your waist, directing your body to press back into his. His thumb is rubbing at your hip, trying to feel you through the fabric of your clothes and suddenly you have the thought and urge to rip it all off so he can feel you up as much as he wants.
His head tilts to the side, the hand that was in your hair moving to grab you by your chin, easily directing you to open your mouth into the kiss. He licks into you, desperate for more as he kisses you harder, like some starved man that hasn’t had a meal in forever. His chest is heaving and you feel the hand on your waist wandering the curves of your body, desperate to feel your bare skin.
You push him away from you slightly, but only because you’re out of breath and need a moment to process what just happened.
Zuko kissed you. And you kissed him back.
But he did more than just kiss you. He made you feel something. He made you want him back. Something you never thought he was capable of.
“What about…” you start, unsure if you should say what you’re about to say.
You either have no talent for hiding your thoughts, or Zuko knows you well, because it’s as if he’s reading your mind because he finishes your sentence for you.
“Mai?”
You nod silently. You always thought she was the one for him, after all up until a while ago he was trying to get back with her.
“Things have changed,” he starts. “Actually, they’ve been changing for awhile. And it’s not what you think.”
Please, did he really think you would believe that? “Okay, then explain calling Mai to confess your love to her again in the gardens.”
“That day in the gardens,” he explains as he leads you to sit on his bed with him. “I didn’t call her out to confess to her. I wanted to see her to ask about you.”
Your eyes narrowed at him; you didn’t believe anything that was coming out of his mouth.
“I know you two are close, so I wanted to ask her for advice because I was already falling for you. But she was calling me a dick for bothering her so she left.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He looks stunned. “You wouldn’t have believed me even if I explained it to you, so it didn’t matter.”
He’s right, you would’ve thought he was a liar and you probably would’ve called him a liar like you did five minutes ago.
“So… you’re not still in love with her?”
“No.”
“You’re telling me you’re not hopelessly, desperately, absolutely blind in love with her that you can’t do anything else or think about anyone else?” you tease in one breath, your heart feeling lighter.
“No, but do you want to know who I’m actually hopelessly, desperately, absolutely blind in love with that I can’t do anything else or think about anyone else?”
“I wonder who it could be.”
“Why don’t you take a guess.” he teases, leaning over you, sharp eyes watching your every move.
“I don’t know.” you do know.
“You don’t?” he chuckles, leaning into your neck, his breath lightly tickling your skin.
“Nope.”
“Would you like a hint?” His voice is so deep and sultry you’re practically trembling at how sexy he sounds.
“That’d be nice.”
“Well, the woman I’m in love with is fucking crazy,” Zuko begins, his hand coming up to stroke your thigh. Your eyes move down to watch his muscular hands massage your inner thighs, moving closer and closer to your pussy with each firm stroke. It’s faint, but you feel yourself clench around nothing.
The veins on his hand are distracting.
“She tried to kill me with a steak knife recently,” he laughs as he recalls the memory, pulling away slightly to look at you.
He is watching your face, trying to read and memorize your features as his eyes gaze into yours. There is a new softness in his eyes when he looks at you, unlike the usual sharp glare he shoots you when you both make eye contact.
“You’re in love with a woman who tried to kill you?” you laugh quietly, going along with whatever joke he’s making.
“Surprisingly, yes. I’m even looking at her right now. Do you know who I’m in love with now?” he smiles, his eyes curving into a smile as well.
“I might need another hint.” you answer, your eyes flickering down to his lips. You hope he will kiss you again.
He picks up on your hint, leaning in to press a quick kiss to your lips. “I’ve kissed her a couple times now. But the last couple times,” he kisses you again. “It’s like she’s laced her lips with drugs or something. I’ve become addicted to her lips in just a couple kisses.” he glances down for a second, grabbing your hand and leading it to where he wants it.
He’s hard.
He directs you to stroke him through the thin material of his loosely tied robe, his lips coming down to suck on the soft skin of your neck.
“And in just a couple kisses,” he says again. “She’s managed to make me so hard.” he breathes against your neck.
“You make me so hard.” Zuko whispers faintly.
His voice sounds so sweet and sexy it almost pisses you off how much his tone is turning you on. You stroke him through his robe, feeling his hard cock underneath. You have the urge to suddenly rip off his robe, wanting to feel him. His abs, his smooth skin, his strong thighs, and his hardened dick. He lets out a soft moan against your neck, his hips unexpectedly bucking upwards for more friction.
“You have no idea what you do to me.” he whispers in your ear, his voice a slight whine.
“I think I have an idea.” you laugh, slightly tugging at the strings that tie his robe together. It’s so loosely wrapped around him that if you just tugged on it slightly, you would finally get to see him naked. He watches your fingers play with his robe, sensing your impatience.
“Take it off.” he tells you, and you act automatically, undoing the knot. He stands briefly, letting the piece of clothing fall to the ground. You stay seated on the bed, your eyes practically groping his entire body. He’s so sculpted and muscular and perfect in every way it almost pisses you off.
His hardened cock springs to life, red and angry at the tip, he looks like he could cum from just a couple strokes. Your eyes make their way back to his, and he’s watching you with such an intensity in his eyes it makes you shudder in pleasure. You stare at him in awe, almost lost in his eyes you don’t notice him stroking your cheek, his voice a small whisper.
“I love seeing you look up at me like that,” he grins, grabbing his dick as he continues to caress your cheek. “It makes me want to ruin you.” You watch him stroke himself, his pre-cum leaking at the tip.
“Then ruin me.”
He smiles a sweet smile in response, before he sticks his fingers in your mouth, forcing your lips apart before he shoves his dick into your mouth.
He’s big, way too big and the biggest you’ve ever had, but you love it. You love how it fills your mouth and you feel like you’re going to choke and it makes you think about just how good it will feel when he finally fucks you. You’re taking him all in your mouth, desperate to hear something from him, to see some sort of reaction that you’re making him feel good. Your hands grab onto both of his thighs, feeling him tense beneath your fingertips.
Strands of your hair fall in front of your face, blocking your view of him, so he grabs it, combing it behind your ears to clear your face. His hands grab at your head, shoving it further down his cock, and when you gag that’s when you hear it.
A low, desperate, sweet sounding moan that makes you clench around nothing again. He bites down hard on his bottom lip in an attempt to quiet himself, but your mouth keeps sucking him in he can’t help but let out a moan of pleasure.
“Fuck,” he groans, thrusting deeper into your mouth. Your eyes water and you rub your thighs together, anxious and impatient and wanting him to hurry and fuck you. “I love your mouth.”
He pulls out, a string of saliva connecting from your lips to his tip as he pulls his cock out. He’s visibly more turned on now; pupils dilated and cheeks red and heated.
“Your mouth feels good,” he easily grabs you by the hips to move you further up the bed. “But I bet this feels even better.” he forcefully spreads your legs with his knees and presses a hand to your clothed pussy. “For both of us.”
“It’d feel even better if you undressed me first.” you command him.
“Yes, ma’am.” he obeys, practically ripping your clothes off and throwing them behind him.
Your underwear is completely soaked, you look away and blush in embarrassment. God, did you look that desperate for some dick? Zuko seems to be infatuated with how wet you’ve become, because he leans down in front of you, his mouth hovering over your heat.
“You don’t have to.” you tell him, grabbing his hair to stop him.
“You’re right. I don’t have to,” he agrees, spreading your legs further so that you’re completely spread out for him, your entire body exposed for him and only him. “But all I can think about right now is tasting you.” he says before he places a kiss on the inside of your thigh.
“You’re so wet,” he observes aloud. “I love it.”
He leans in, his tongue sticking out to lick a strip up your wetness. He’s lapping at your pussy, licking and sucking and kissing everything it makes you dizzy. He sucks on your clit, his fingers teasing your entrance. You’re so turned on by the sound of him eating you out, you grab his hair by instinct to pull him closer to you. When he groans, you mistake it for a groan of annoyance or pain, so you let go. His lips leave your wetness for a moment, his eyes looking up to meet yours.
“Grab my hair again,” he takes your hand and entangles it into his hair again. “I love when you pull on it. I fucking love it.”
You can’t help but whimper, pulling on his roots as he moans in pleasure and you don’t know if it’s because you’re tugging on his hair or because he loves eating you out or both. Your hips are moving on their own, bucking upwards into his face as his fingers easily make their way inside you, fucking you slowly to loosen you up.
“Ahh,” you cringe at yourself, almost ashamed and embarrassed you can’t hold yourself back. Your hands leave his hair to cover your face, heat rushing to your cheeks. Zuko pulls away from you, wiping his mouth before tugging at your hands.
“Why are you covering your face?” he asks, his hands gently wrapping at your wrists and rubbing your skin soothingly.
“No reason,” you shake your head, mortified.
“Come on now, let me see your face.” he grabs your wrists with one hand, pinning them above your head as he holds you down, his face inches away from yours.
You’re even more embarrassed and red now. You’re both completely naked and he’s situated between your legs, his cock rubbing against your entrance teasingly. Your hands are pinned above you, and the weight of his hand is holding you down, you’re unable to move. He’s watching you, basking in your embarrassment.
“I love your voice,” he assures you.
“When you’re yelling at me,” he kisses your cheek.
“Insulting me,” he kisses your other cheek.
“And especially when you’re moaning for me.” he leaves small kisses on your jawline as his hips move against yours, his hard cock rubbing against your wetness. You’re so desperate to have him fuck you it’s almost impossible not to whine in annoyance.
“I love when you moan. I want to hear more of it.” he says before he pushes himself into you.
“Oh,” you gasp, struggling to take him in.
“Fuck,” he lets go of your pinned hands and grabs your hips.
“You son of a bitch,” you curse, your walls clenching down and welcoming him. You feel yourself throb around him, sucking him in as your hands wrap around his back. “You’re too big.”
“You like it though,” he mumbles, pleasure taking over his body it’s becoming harder for him to speak clearly. He thrusts slowly, swearing to himself under his breath again. You moan as he fucks you more, your hands holding the back of his neck as he buries himself into you.
“I love it, it feels so good.” you moan, stroking his hair as his hips roll against you.
“I love you.” he tells you.
“I love you.” he repeats, practically chanting it like it’s some sort of prayer.
He keeps whispering it into your ear, and you lift your hips, wrapping your legs around him as he continues to thrust into you. He glides in and out of you so easily it turns you on even more that he gets you so wet and ready so easily.
Your hands are busy exploring his smooth skin, feeling his neck and collarbone when he moans in your ear, his voice almost silent and pleading.
“Choke me,” he begs. “L-Like you did the other day. Do it again.”
“What?”
“Please,” he breathes out, his eyes looking into yours, desperate and aroused. “I want your hands wrapped around my throat.”
You steadily place your hands on the side of his neck, careful not to block his airway. You squeeze the sides of his neck slightly, and as soon as you do, his eyes roll back in pleasure and his thrusts are harder.
“Mmm,” he moans, biting down on his lips as he fucks into you. “Harder,” he demands.
The harder you choke him, the harder he fucks you. His moans grow louder and he’s practically chanting your name, begging you to destroy him as his thrusts grow haphazard the closer he gets to orgasming.
He explodes, filling you up with so much cum it starts leaking out. But Zuko keeps going, desperate to make you finish as well. You’re no longer choking him, but your hands are instead messing up his hair and his lips are on your breasts, biting and sucking and kissing, you feel dizzy.
His lips feel so good on your body. He leaves kisses and marks and words of his love and devotion for you it’s all so overwhelming. When he starts whispering to you how good your pussy feels and how much he loves you, it pushes you over the edge and you feel yourself clenching down on him hard as you reach your high.
When there’s nothing but the sound of your heavy breaths, all of a sudden you feel awkward. You hadn’t realized it until now, but you had been slowly falling for his stupid face and you were in denial about it this whole time.
“What’re you thinking so hard about?” Zuko hovers over your face, looking deeply into your eyes as if he’s trying to read you.
“Your stupid face.”
He chuckles, leaning down to brush his nose against yours before he leaves a small kiss on your cheek.
“I’m in love with you.” he tells you.
“Oh.”
“Oh?”
“Thank you.” you say awkwardly, because you’re not good with words and you’re too embarrassed to tell him that you’re also in love with him because you would probably cringe and feel even more awkward than you do right now.
“So… you do have a thing for being choked!” you tease when you suddenly remember him asking you to choke him.
He tenses, his eyes widening as he suddenly pulls out of you and sits up. “No I don’t!”
“If I remember correctly, you asked me to choke you! Remember? You were practically begging—”
He leans down, quickly kissing you to shut up. “I don’t remember that. And tell me you love me back.” he demands.
“Admit you like being choked first.”
“No.”
“Fine, then I don’t love you. I still hate you.”
“Tell me you love me.” he demands again, unwilling to give up.
“Tell me you like being choked.” you fire back.
He’s quiet for a moment, and that’s when you know you’ve won.
“Fine. I do like it, but don’t tell anyone!” he glares at you. “Now you say you love me.”
“I hate you.” you tease.
“Whatever, I still love you.” Zuko rolls his eyes, leaning in to kiss you once more.

REQUESTS ARE OPEN !!!!! okay this has been a long time coming for me but would you be open to doing a general iroh and kya’s daughter wedding piece ? i feel like that’s the only part of their relationship we haven’t seen !
a/n: was so excited to get this request bc i love these two so much!!!
~ based off of these headcanons ~
Tumblr media
“You look beautiful.”
“I think I’m going to puke,” you utter with a nervous laugh, anxiously fidgeting with the ceremonial pins in your hair that you just can’t seem to get straight.
Sighing, Kya carefully pushes your hands away before adjusting the pins herself. The golden ornate pieces had been a gift from Zuko, said to have belonged to his late wife and worn on their own wedding day, and though you were grateful for the thoughtful gift you also felt that an immense amount of pressure came with them. Marrying Iroh meant you’d officially be part of the royal family now, and a part of you was worried you wouldn’t be able to live up to the expectations that came with that.
“It’s normal to be nervous,” your mother consoles, stepping back to admire her work once the pins are set. “Today is an important day and the start of another adventure for you, but it’s nothing you can’t handle.”
“I don’t feel like a real bride,” you admit in an almost defeated tone. You stare at your reflection in the mirror and find yourself carefully brushing your fingers against the crescent moon hanging from your neck. The coolness of the stone against your fingertips brings a sense of comfort to you, but it doesn’t relieve you of your nerves.
“Are you having second thoughts?” Kya asks with a worried furrow of her brows.
“Of course not!” You’re quick to interject. “I love Iroh, I can’t imagine a life without him anymore.”
“But?” Your mother prods.
“But… What if I’m not good at being a wife? What if I’m just not… not good at all. He’s the General and the son of the Fire Lord. What can I give him that he doesn’t already have or that he couldn’t get from a Fire Nation woman here?”
Smiling faintly, Kya gently takes your hands in her own and gives them a comforting squeeze. “That boy loves you more than you could ever know. I see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice when he speaks about you. I wouldn’t have given him my blessing if I wasn’t one hundred percent sure of this. Don’t compare yourself or waste your time wondering about all the what ifs. All you have to do today is focus on Iroh, and everything else will take care of itself.”
You let out a shaky breath and blink back your tears before throwing your arms around your mother in a tight hug. You know she speaks the truth, and her comforting words greatly ease your anxiety. You’d fallen in love with the boy from your childhood, and he’d fallen just as hard for you if not harder. Despite being apart for so many years you’d found your way back to each other and helped one another find the missing piece in your lives. You and Iroh are simply meant to be, and your wedding will be proof that.
A gentle knock on the door has you parting from your mother, and as Bumi sticks his head in the doorway you smile.
“It’s almost time, kiddo,” he says with a grin. “The general’s going to get his socks knocked off when he sees you.”
“Thank you, Uncle Bumi,” you laugh tearfully before allowing him to hug you tight. You don’t know this, but Bumi has always felt a sort of paternal love for you. He was the closest thing you had to a father growing up and you were the closest thing he had to a child, and like your mother he felt so much pride and love at seeing you so happy. He knew you were in good hands, and that was more than enough for him.
“Are you ready?” Kya asks with an encouraging smile. Sucking in one final nervous breath, you nod before taking her arm and beginning your walk to the palace gardens.
In the courtyard a handful of chairs are set up for your intimate ceremony. Only close friends and family are invited, neither you nor Iroh wanted to make a grand spectacle of your marriage, so you decided to hold your wedding in the gardens with his mother Izumi as your officiant.
At the end of the makeshift isle, Iroh stands in his uniform with a fire lily delicately pinned to his lapel. He shifts anxiously from one foot to the other eagerly awaiting for your arrival. He’s been looking forward to this day ever since he proposed to you, and he can’t wait to finally make you his wife after all this time.
“You make a handsome husband, son,” Izumi compliments from her place beside him. “It brings me great joy to see you so happy.”
“Thank you for agreeing to officiate the wedding, mother,” Iroh expresses gratefully.
“I knew it was a matter of time before you two fell in love,” she notes with a careful smile. “I know she’ll make a wonderful wife.”
Beaming with pride, Iroh’s gaze falls upon the garden gates where you finally emerge. Arm linked with Kya’s and with a bouquet of flowers in the other hand, you make the most radiant bride Iroh has ever seen. Your gown flows elegantly behind you as you walk, your hair sparkles from the sunlight hitting the pins, and your smile is enough to take his breath away. He can feel himself beginning to tear up, and it takes everything in him not to rush towards you and take you in his arms himself.
Kya hugs you tight once you reach the end of the isle, doing her best to keep her tears at bay before letting you go. Carefully tucking a stray strand of hair away from your face, she smiles before handing you off to Iroh.
“Take good care of my daughter,” she whispers before chastely kissing his cheek.
The butterflies in your stomach are quieted when you finally reach Iroh. Nothing else but him matters in that moment, and as his golden irises stare into your own you find yourself falling in love all over again.
“You look so beautiful,” he whispers with a tearful laugh.
“So do you,” you smile, carefully wiping your tears so as to not ruin your makeup.
Your ceremony goes without a hitch, and when Izumi officially proclaims you as husband and wife Iroh gracefully dips you before giving you the most passionate kiss you’ve ever experienced. Your family and friends cheer and applaud, but it all fades into the background as you grip his sleeves and melt into his touch.
“I can’t wait to spend forever with you,” he professes earnestly after parting from your kiss.
“Forever and always,” you agree breathlessly before pulling him down by his collar for another kiss.

Even if zuko has a plan to end the war, making katara work amongst people who likely hold racism towards her and aided and supported the genocide of her people is still weird, especially since zuko benefits from the fire nations oppression of people throughout s1 when hunting the Avatar. Not good choices to make in a zutara au :/
Believe me, I've made these arguments against myself over and over again.
I know I'm putting Katara in an extremely difficult and unjust position in this AU with—from an outsider's point of view—little to no reason other than "I just wanted to see her in Fire Nation armor and kicking ass" and no consideration for the context. I'm not trying to somehow forgive nor redeem the Fire Nation's actions in war just because...well...just because. Not at all. People who've read Soundless (or any other of my wips, really) know that's not the case. On the contrary—I always do my best to see the war through a realistic, mature lense. And that includes everything that makes the Fire Nation so terrible in the first place.
That being said, there are some things I considered when deciding to make Katara side with them (even if her true motives lie elsewhere) in this AU. And they are not excuses. Just, different layers of context.
First of all, she was desperate. By this point in her life, her mother was dead, her father had left to fight the war, her brother followed behind a few years after, and she was left filling the empty spaces when, by all means, she wasn't ready for the responsibility. She had been feeling helpless and hopeless for years, and ached to do anything to help her people beyond doing chores and taking care for the children.
Let it be known that Aang's apparent betrayal comes from a place of trauma and misplaced anger on Katara's part. Much like how she put the Fire Nation's sins on Zuko's shoulders in S3. She is not on the right here, but this is her natural way to process and understand grief. There are many different aspects of her development as a child involved in how she views the Avatar—and, by extension, Aang—but more on this later.
Katara was young, and reckless, and she had just been "betrayed" by the first person who ever looked at her and saw more than the perfect caretaker she was forced to be. She was not in the right state of mind to make a decision like that and, to be honest, she couldn't have predicted the consequences. She saw a clear path to contribute to the end of the war, and by La she would take it.
On Zuko's end, you might argue that he should have known better than to let her join him and, well, you would be right. But there were many things about Katara's trauma response and state of mind that—unless he had known her for a long time—he couldn't have known. He will definitely blame himself later on, when the racism and cruelty towards Katara begins, and especially when word reaches her family at sea.
It's Katara's job to smack some sense into him from time to time and tell him that, yes, he should have tried harder to stop her (and she would probably be better off because of it) but what's done is done. And, by all means, the decision was hers to make. If anything, it's their fault, not his alone.
Now, Katara doesn't suffer the entire AU. That would just be cruel.
Zuko's crew was handpicked by Uncle Iroh, so you can expect dissidents, traitors and a few White Lotus agents who were smart enough to keep their true opinions quiet. There are...mixed opinions in that bunch, of course, but that's expected and, to be honest, rather easily dealt with. They are mostly honourable people just doing their best to end the war from the inside.
The real problem comes when they cross paths with, say, Zhao's fleet (or Hakoda's, let's be real).
And you may ask why Zuko is hunting down Aang, then, if he's secretly a goody-two-shoes himself... I'll explain that later in depth, so stay tuned.
In short, I know the decisions I've made, as a creator, are debatable at best, and downright blasfemous at worst. But they're deliberate.
I want the readers to feel conflicted about Katara's choices in this AU. I want people to have mixed opinions about the war, the (apparent lack of) morality, the characters, you name it!
I'm not trying to glorify a victim of war joining the side of the ones responsible for her people's genocide, even if it's just for show and she's actually set on destroying their government from within. Not at all.
Katara made a stupid, horrible decision, and she's going to suffer the consequences. But she's also going to fight to reach her goals, because she's stubborn like that.
I know most people may have a little trouble understanding where I'm coming from, because they don't have all the information necessary to make a full opinion.
I'm really thankful for these kind of asks. They let me explore these concepts and AUs in depth, and see what you think about them. I'm only human—my opinions are not infalible, nor The Right Ones, and this is a kind of discussion that I love to have.
So, keep the asks coming!!!

Au. No war. Azula at age 6 is far more powerful, stronger, and better. Trains and learned everything you could ever think of, fire lightning bending, all nations bending styles moves techniques and movements, swordman, chi, hth combat, martial arts, flight. Already have blue flames that have heat temp. C 3100, hides it from everyone, only showing gold flames, and not letting them know she already also mastered the lightning. (Can redirect lightning, and the dragon dance after secretly watch iroh do it once, managed to learn it in just 5 minutes). trains even harder that she already have indigo flames have heat temp. C 4200 at age 10. Then at age 14 can do violet flames that have heat temp. C 7100. Have scars, burns everywhere from training her heat resistance to the same level of her heat temp. And now also have hear resistance of C 7100. Invented fire healing after it and healed her body that scars, burns are barely visible (no fire benders can and could burn her, since she have the hottest fire and resistance to it, while theirs are not even hot to her anymore).... Fire family (all members) along with Mai tylee are in SouthernWaterTribe (already knows hakoda's family). When ozai challenges azula in a fight (not an agni Kai) for her disobedience, expecting that he would manage to burn and humiliate azula badly. All family members/water tribes/hakoda's family all watch since they can't stop it. At first azula just let him have fun, then proceed to beat the shit out of ozai (as they fight on the ground or flying (only azula) on the air (since ozai have limit), or should I say azula beating ozai). all ozai's attack (fire and lightning) are useless to her. The audience are speechless, stunned. At the end of the battle, azula doesn't even have 1 scratch at all, and not even tired... (Water tribes are happy that ozai got his ass kick, since they are tension with him). After it, as all of them are in a dining room, hakoda and Kya ask azula if she can teach their daughter some simple or basic waterbending moves since they recognized some on the fight earlier (katara are in awe when they tell her that some of those moves are waterbending). while fire family are still jaw drop since azula hides her real strength and power in the past.... Maizula tyzula azutara Romantic.
Hello, anon!!!
1. There is no war but there is tension among the nations. Ozai constantly says that war could break out at any moment and most Fire Nationals, especially the nobility, agree with him. Since they’re worried about a war, it’s expected that the children train and become stronger. Azula and Zuko are expected to train both because of a possible war and because they’re part of the Royal Family. Zuko is a decent firebender and trains as best he can but Azula hears that she needs to be ready to fight and runs with it. When she’s younger, she trains every second of every day. Even when everyone has gone to bed, she sneaks out of her room and practices her bending, learning as much as she can to prepare for the upcoming battle. Ozai catches her once but he doesn’t notice her blue flames that she was training with when he does. Instead, she quickly changes her color back to orange. (Ozai: Azula, what are you doing? Azula: Training! I wanted to master the Chameleon. Ozai, chuckling: That’s adorable. The Chameleon is far too advanced for you. You can learn it when you’re older. Azula: When? Ozai: Wait until you reach ten. But I do admire your determination. It’s exactly what I would expect from a Princess of the Fire Nation. Now, off to bed. You have your tutor bright and early in the morning. Azula: Yes, father). Azula decides not to tell him that she already mastered the Chameleon move two months ago.
2. Azula is seven when Hakoda’s family comes to visit. Azula has no idea why a Water Tribe family is coming to the palace when they’re, potentially, the enemy. Ursa just tells her and Zuko to be on their best behavior and not mention anything about a potential war or the tension between the Fire Nation and South Pole. Azula does her job, she keeps her mouth shut, but she doesn’t like that she has to sit across from a waterbender. After eating, their parents remain to talk while the kids go into the garden. After some back and forth, Azula soon realizes that Katara and Sokka aren’t like what she was expecting. They’re not mean or violent or destructive, nothing like what her father described. (Katara: Tag! You’re it! Azula: Are we allowed to use our bending? Sokka: No! That’s not fair! Katara: Yes! Azula, using her fire jets to launch herself forward and tag Zuko: You’re it, Zuzu! Katara: What was that?!? Azula:….Fire jets. I thought we could use bending. Did…was that not allowed? I’ve never played tag. Sokka: THAT WAS AWESOME!) By the time the sun has set, Azula finds that she doesn’t want to stop playing with them. She likes getting the chance to be a somewhat normal kid but also have people who find her advanced skills awesome not because they can get something out of it but because they recognize how great of an accomplishment it is.
3. Time goes on and the Water Family continues to come and visit. Azula and Katara end up spending quite a bit of time together since Katara is also a bender and is allowed to use the training arena to practice. The two spar from time to time but it’s most time dedicated to them working separately. During one visit, the two are sparring together and Katara accidentally trips trying to avoid one of Azula’s flames and falls onto Azula. The two look up at one another with blushes all over their faces. (Katara: I….ummm….I’m sorry I didn’t mean to- Azula: You don’t have to apologize. It was my fault for tripping you. But do you…do you mind getting off me? Katara: Yes! I mean no! No, I do not mind.) Azula only realizes after Katara leaves that she has a massive crush on the waterbender but she also realizes something else. Her father’s words about tension and an incoming war seem more and more like a well done lie.
4. One day, when Azula is 14, the family is together having dinner with the Water Tribe family. During the evening, Ozai starts talking about the Fire Nation military and talking about how it’s grown insanely powerful. His words make things tense and it’s clear that he’s using the to subtly suggest that Hakoda and his family have to support them if war does break out of risk being destroyed. (Ozai: Someone could get hurt *looks at Katara and Sokka*.) Azula speaks up before Hakoda does, angered that Ozai lied to her, threatened the WT and, most of all, angry that he threatened Katara. Ozai, obviously, gets angry at her as well for her disobedience and orders her to remain quiet. Azula refuses and Ozai challenges her to an Agni Kai. Ursa and Zuko try to step in on Azula’s behalf, both of them believing that Azula is a good bender but she would get destroyed by Ozai, and Azula refuses. She says that she is more than capable of taking on her father and they head to the Agni Kai stage. At first, it looks like Azula will lose. Only Katara notices that Azula’s skin isn’t being burned by Ozai and the entire fight seems too….easy for her. It’s like she’s an autopilot the entire time. Then, at the one or two minute mark of the fight, Azula starts actually fighting. She’s not only better trained and has more skills than him but she’s also faster and smaller than him and able to avoid his attacks a lot more. (Ursa: Should we stop this? Hakoda: Why would you? Azula’s winning.). The fight doesn’t even last another two minutes before Azula beats her father and is declared the champion.
5. The two weren’t really fighting for Fire Lord title or anything. Azula does take the opportunity to banish Ozai for almost getting them involved in a war and says he’s only allowed to return when he finds the Avatar. It’s a bit of humor on her part that she accuses her father of almost destroying balance and his sentence is that he has to find someone who’s whole just is balance. (Azula: Soooooo….who’s up for mochi?) When they return inside, Ursa and Zuko are too shocked to speak but Hakoda asks for her to help train Katara which Azula happily agrees to. When the water family leaves, they leave with Azula with rumors now spreading about the powerful Fire Nation princess.

Apparently this is “undeniable” proof that Kataang wasn’t always gonna be endgame. I don’t get it TBH. But what do you think?
https://araeph.tumblr.com/post/151770892635/irrefutable-proof-that-kataang-was-not-always/embed
"Aang's attachment to Katara was selfish because it was based on feeling entitled to a relationship with somoene that didn't love him back"
Bullshit. Pure bullshit. The vision that makes him give up on trying to let go of his attachment to her was her being captured and imprisoned. He literally screams "Katara is in danger!"
He loved her and wanted to be with her, yes, but his main concern was "What if I prioritize something else over and end up losing her like I lost my people?" because remember, we are explicitly shown in that very episode that his love for the other air-nomads, his previous family, is living on through his love for Katara, who is part of his current family - and yes, the girl he'd eventually marry and have kids with once they were older.
But Aang cannot afford to focus on making sure only one person is doing okay. That's why, in Ba Sing Se, when he sees everyone, including Katara, fighting against all the Dai Li, he does the right thing and trusts that, if he does his duty to end the war, everyone will be safe and sound - including Katara.
His romantic feelings for her make it HARDER to let go of her, but his attachment is not based SOLELY on it.
And for fucks sake people, Katara canonically started looking at him differently all the way back in season 1, during the fortuneteller episode and flirted with him the following episode. She clearly liked kissing him in Cave Of Two Lovers, and she was visibly upset when Aang was acting cold and distant towards her after Appa's kidnapping. She likes him back. Deal with it.
"Aang being able to get into the Avatar State after hitting that rock makes no sense because it was as spiritual issue, not a physical one. He should have fixed it by letting go of Katara"
Aang let go of Katara in Ba Sing Se. We literally see it happening. Aang's chakra was blocked because he was struck by Azula's lightning on that very moment. A physical trauma, that visibly left a PERMANENT mark on his body. That boy literally died and had to be brought back to life.
Through the show, we see things like Ty Lee using pressure points to block people's bending (and movement in general), Toph offering to help Aang relax in Nightmares and Daydreams through accupuncture, and Toph also becoming a incredibly poweful bender because the suppression of one of her five senses hightened the others.
In the Avatar world, a physical thing can canonically block or trigger someone's ability to do something. Aang's chakra being unblocked after something hit the spot that left a physical trauma on his body makes total sense.
On Zuko's fever dreams supposedly revealing his true self and making him more empathetic
Uncle Iroh tells us that Zuko will be his true self once he recovers. The following episode Zuko SEEMS happy and is acting much kinder towards his uncle.
But he ditched it all the very second a chance to be a prince again was given to him by Azula. He double-down on his selfishness, entitlement, arrogance and cruelty. He betrayed a man that was more like a father to him than Ozai ever was, even though he did genuinely love Iroh.
And once Zuko actually changes sides for good and is GENUINELY being kinder and more honorable he acts NOTHING like that overly-happy, super optimistic boy we saw in Ba Sing Se - because that was NOT Zuko's true self, it was him trying to please the one person he still had in his life. Trying to be like him because no other path seemed possible. And even though he convinced himself he was happy, he had already said he wanted more than just a well-paying job that allowed him to live a quiet life in a nice place. He wanted to go home, he wanted to be Fire Lord, and that's exactly what his ending was.
Either the writers wrote themselves into a corner for the sake making Zuko's betrayal towards his uncle all the more shocking, or it was one of the rare moments of the show subtly reminding us that Uncle Iroh is NOT perfect and can make mistakes despite being a wise man.

Taken - Zutara - Part 25
First / Previous / Next / Masterpost
Katara is optimistic about their chances of success.
They couldn't risk leaving Aang exposed, not even for a moment, so Katara and Sokka paced around the pond. Yue, being a noncombatant, would remain hidden with Zuko, who Zhao apparently believed was dead. That story was one she would have to shake out of him later.
For now, it was a waiting game.
They were there for hours. Night turned to day, and day faded to night once more. She and Sokka slept in short shifts, though they didn't get much sleep. It was near midnight, the moon high above them, that Aang stirred. The glowing faded, Aang stood.
"The koi fish!" Aang shouted. "We need to protect them!"
Katara opened her mouth, only to jump back. A wave of fire rushed past her. Zhao had arrived, flanked by two guards and trailed by Iroh. Aang and Sokka jumped into fighting position, Katara sliding into her own fighting form.
"I see the Avatar is here as well." Zhao hummed, his eyes turning to Katara. "And the Fire Lord's waterbender. Not as charcoal as believed."
She had met Zhao before. He had gotten a good sized gash across his back while in the Earth Kingdom, seemingly from some kind of talons, but larger than any bird Katara knew up. He'd only been a lieutenant then, but General Shu had seen promise in Zhao, and wasn't willing to let the potential be lost.
Sokka was gritting his teeth, his arm lifting, but Katara held up a hand to stop him. She was sure Zuko was just as angry, and they couldn't risk a fight just yet. Who knew how many soldiers were behind them.
"Katara," Aang said, shifting slightly. "He's after the moon spirit."
"I know," she said, raking her eyes over the four men. Iroh was undoubtedly on their side, as Zuko had put it. The two soldiers couldn't be identified with their masked helmets. "Zhao, you know what will happen if you kill the moon spirit, don't you?"
"I'll become a legend," the man said with a twisted grin. "I'll be 'Zhao the Conquer', 'the moon slayer'! And your worthless tribe will loose all of its bending."
"Tui is La's beloved," she said. "The ocean spirit. You would really let your wrath blind you? You're a naval admiral, last I heard. Out on the seas, you would be left to La's mercy. Not even Agni will be able to save you."
"Nonsense," Zhao said, stepping closer. "I don't have time to listen to you. You're out numbered. Move."
It was Iroh that moved first. Fighting roared up around them. Iroh quickly went blow for blow with Zhao, while Katara, Sokka, and Aang worked on the two soldiers. Zuko rushed to join the fray, causing more outraged cries from Zhao.
They were subdued with shocking ease, Zhao being held down by Zuko. The two soldiers were frozen to a nearby wall.
"That's it?" Sokka asked. "I thought it would be harder."
Katara whirled on her brother. "Did you really just say that?"
They stopped, listening, waiting. Normally, when Sokka brought up that something was to easy, things got a lot more difficult. Now, though...
"Huh..." Turning to Zuko and their captive, Katara frowned. "I... guess we take him to Chief Arnook. Uncle, as the next highest rank, could you order a retreat?"
Iroh hummed. "That seems like a wise decision. After all..." His gaze, cold as a waterbenders ice, turned to Zhao. "The admiral has failed to heed my advice and gotten himself captured."
She watched him go, Sokka and Yue following him out.
"You're brother's right," Zuko said, after a moment. "That was to easy."
A second later, Chief Arnook, Pakku, and a plethora of warriors rush in. Immediately, the chief orders the enemy Fire Nation to be taken captive. And, despite repeatedly saying otherwise, they slapped Zuko in chains alongside Zhao.
"You just had to say something," Katara grit out, standing in front of the bars of Zuko's cell. Down the hall, she could hear Zhao ranting in fury. "'To easy', you said. Now look where you are."
"I'm sorry," he said, sitting against the wall. He wasn't looking at her, keeping his head down.
"It's just a superstition..."
"That's... not what I meant."
She frowned. "Then what are you sorry for?"
He gave a slow breath of fire, keeping himself warm. "I never told you that my hunt for the Avatar had changed. I... hadn't thought I had to, when I agreed to help your father. But my mistake led us on a wild goose chase around the world, caused us to waste time. We could have been traveling in secret, out of sight and out of danger. So I'm sorry, for not telling you exactly what I was doing."
Katara shook her head. "Honestly... I should be the one apologizing. I expected the worst from you. After everything we've been through, everything you've done for us, I shouldn't have."
It was then that Zuko looked up. His gaze was intense. "So you forgive me?"
She met his gaze head on. "There's nothing to forgive, Zuko."

i’ve seen people argue that it was selfish/unethical of zuko not to kill ozai when they were alone during the eclipse since he had the chance and placing that burden on aang’s shoulders (even though it had been on aang’s shoulders since the start of the narrative.)
aside from the fact that, from a doylist perspective, aang is the main protagonist and the audience would have been disappointed not to see HIM driving the final confrontation with ozai, i also think it would diminish zuko’s arc as he lets go of the control ozai once had over him, as not allowing himself to be goaded into violence and only defending himself when attacked is defiance in and of itself.
i can’t help thinking, though, what would have happened if he had, and i only see two/maybe three logical outcomes—none of which would have actually helped the team, anyway. either zuko IS goaded into a fight (not in line with his arc at this point, but for the sake of argument) and ozai kills him (because i do still think ozai would be manipulative enough to stall/prolong combat until the end of the eclipse), or zuko redirects lightning at ozai, which maybe kills him. (though iroh survives getting struck by lightning with, like, no healing in book two, so… who knows? not me!) whether it does or doesn’t, zuko would likely be arrested as a traitor (at best, though it seems unlikely execution wouldn’t be on the table), and if ozai did die, i can only imagine that would mean azula, who still actively upholds imperialist ideals and actions, ascending to the throne and carrying on with her father’s plans. i guess there is some small chance zuko could escape after an assassination (attempt), but i find “zuko is either killed or imprisoned, aang never gets a firebending teacher, and the team has a much harder time winning the war and/or they don’t” a far more likely chain of events.
i don’t really know what the point of this is, other than that i can’t stop thinking about it, and i’d love to hear your thoughts if my rambling happens to inspire any <3
Not only has it been Aang's burden to begin with, but another reason why Zuko should not be the one to kill Ozai is for the same reason Iroh shouldn't. It would look like an attempt to steal power from within the royal family. The burden has to be on Aang's shoulders because as the Avatar, he acts as an ambassador of all nations. That's the whole purpose of having all four elements in one body. If Zuko kills Ozai, he actually runs the risk of threatening the peace Aang is trying to create. What would it look like if word got out that the firelord's son did what the Avatar failed to do, after 100 years of people already losing hope in the Avatar? Part of the whole deal is returning that hope to the world, that faith in the harmony that the Avatar symbolically represents. Otherwise, why should the other nations care that one fire nation royal deposes another?
As you say, a number of things could go wrong. One is that Ozai goads Zuko into a fight and kills him, which was Ozai's plan in the first place. Like, does anyone think that Ozai was trying to get Zuko to do this for Zuko's benefit? Ozai is absolutely trying to manipulate Zuko in that scene and goading him into a fight, goading him into being angry and emotional and vengeful in the hopes that he makes a mistake, is one way to do that.
Any of the other possibilities, such as Zuko being arrested or branded a traitor or Azula taking the throne, would only increase the discord in the Fire Nation. Like I said, the Avatar is not just important as the Hero(tm), he is a political symbol. Even those who reject the spiritual significance of the Avatar would have a hard time disputing it if Aang has the backing of an army and several world leaders, whereas it would be too easy to paint Zuko as someone who acted alone, a son trying to steal power from a father. And those who supported Azula would recall how Zuko had been banished, how he had always been second fiddle to Azula, and look, it turns out he's also lied about killing the Avatar in an attempt to steal his sister's glory! Those who support Aang but distrust the fire nation would be suspicious of Zuko killing Ozai seconds before the coup, who again, looks like he is acting alone. Zuko could end up being killed or imprisoned by either side, and since Aang and co. don't know he plans to join them, they wouldn't know any different, either. Imagine the gaang showing up to Zuko, who has been their enemy for the past three seasons, being like "hey guys, I killed the firelord for you!" Do you think they are likely to trust him?
Also, man, these people will do anything to preserve Aang's moral purity but think it should be fine for Zuko to murder his own father? Where is Zuko's lion turtle in this scenario, I wonder?

So naturally because of the similarity of parents and children themes with Avatar and Hollow Knight (albeit Ozai doesn't have the cause that the Pale King did) I'm going to be curious as how Zuko takes any reveals that uh - being the approved of child by the dangerous parent is still a bad spot, just a different one and possibly worse because harder to get out. Ghost left behind - bad, but not essentially sacrificed to the Radiance. Hornet - pressure of protecting a crumbling kingdom going under.
Admittedly I'm sympathetic to Azula. Iroh is right she needs to be stopped - but she gets Ozai's attention and was given a simple way of not being in his ire "Don't be Zuko". Throw in Ozai not being subtle about isolating her (Mai's family sent across the sea about when Azula was old enough for summer long visits/explore the Fire Nation without constant supervision)
The man knew exactly what he was doing with finally giving Azula some level of control over her life - as a military operative. (Whose first acts was to get Mai and Tylee because her friends.) Abusive father - just Azula went the appease route and unlike Hollow her parent desires destruction.
ATLA is such a good show, and the parallels between characters and themes in ATLA and Hollow Knight was part of the reason I wanted to attempt to crossover the two medias in the first place. You've got manipulative kings on opposite side of the spectrums (Sacrificing everything for the greater good vs for your own personal gain) and children being used and manipulated, knowingly (Hollow, Hornet to some extent) or unknowingly (Azula, Zuko at first).
That said, Azula is such a cool character I really want to get her right when she shows up. I've come up with at least three different ways I could write her when her important scenes start happening, and I honestly haven't fully committed to which direction to go in yet.

My Avatar and pjo fusion fic I will (probably) never write
Annabeth: Rebel. Her mother, Athena, his the leader of the white lotus. She really wants to make her mother proud. And you know defeat Fire Lord Zeus.
Grover: He searches for the lost avatar hoping that they can put an end to the war with the fire nation. Unfortunately turns out he is the avatar he was searching for...
Percy: The best water bender the southern water tribe has. His mother was kidnapped in the raids and his goal is to find her. Grover thinks the reports of waterbending the earth kingdom mean that the avatar is there. Annabeth just wanted to gain intelligence on the fire nation fleet positions. Instead Percy has to fight Admiral Ares (he didn’t even find out anything on where his mom might be!) and in the chaos of their escape Grover bends two elements. Also they destroy Annabeth’s get away boat whoops. They have to flee on Mrs O’Leary Percy’s polar bear dog.
The final and most unwilling part of this gang? The banished prince of the fire nation Apollo
Apollo: He was banished for treason, a charge he strongly denies. To prove his loyalty he must track down and kill the avatar! He gets sidetracked immediately. There are just so many cool thing outside of the fire nation. New musical instruments to master, new places to see, and he is making so many new friends too! And enemies. But seriously he never wants to return to the fire nation especially after Zeus struck him with lightning. The nerve damage from that made it a lot harder to do things that once came easy to him.
His crew!
Meg accidental stowaway. Was sent by Nero to gather info on and if possible kill Apollo instead she wound up stranded on his ship when Apollo had to flee port again. Turns out this Apollo guy wasn’t that bad. As in cannon Apollo sees a lot of similarities between him and Megs situations. He wants to help her. In a weird way Apollo also serves the role of Megs uncle Iroh. Meg is a swamp bender!
Crest is alive and getting those music lessons! Pockets of airbenders are still alive and kicking. Crests group of airbenders got very into war and violence considering fighting the best way to protect themselves. Anyways he joined up with Apollo and is trying to learn traditional airbenders instruments and music.
Lityerses: former subordinate of the warlord Commodus.
The original crew of sailors he got! Apollo created a weekly music night and poetry night. There is also a book club. Painting. This is widely regarded as the best fire nation ship to be assigned to in aside from the fact that any sort of career advancement is impossible.
Grover’s gang stows away on Apollo’s ship. To be fair to them it no longer looks like a typical fire nation ship. It has been painted white and the crew created murals to decorate the sides. The flag is a sun not a red flame. Also they were in a rush running away from the fire nation.
After they get found out and things are explained. Annabeth wants to recruit Apollo to the rebellion like her mother wants to do. Grover wouldn’t mind staying especially when Apollo has masters of all four elements on his ship. Percy figures it would be easier to track down his mother if he could convince Apollo to ask around. Apollo does not want them here at all. He wants to stay out of the war and he definitely does not want the avatar on his ship! Someone might think he captured him!

WBTA if I asked for even more Iroh II headcanons ? Seriously. I loved the ones you provided. I could totally see Iroh having everyone fawning over him yet he chooses to marry a childhood friend.
No one shall be shamed on this blog for asking for headcanons, no matter how many servings you've already had. I'm not a fan of Dickens and I've never even read Oliver Twist.
People who don't know Iroh -- or, rather, don't know him well but are in a position to observe him from a distance -- think he's a prodigy at everything he does and one of the luckiest people alive. Things just seem to work out for him, no matter what he's doing. This has actually gotten mixed a little with a general long-standing resentment of the Fire Nation in the rest of the world, that it has thrived so much in the years since the war. It's not enough that it's an economic and military powerhouse that has managed to maintain its traditional lands, but its leaders seem to be blessed by the spirits themselves.
The truth, which Iroh's closest friends and family know, is that he's had to bust his butt for everything he's accomplished in life. He actually has a learning disorder, although I don't know enough about them yet to assign one to him, and required specialized tutoring. He's always been clumsy, so he's had to do double the amount of training as everyone else to learn his Firebending forms. He's not the quickest thinker and he actually has bad instincts, so he also had to train himself to have a completely artificial set of reactions, and when he can, he takes as much time to think things over as possible.
Essentially, Iroh's big advantages are his tenacity and the opportunity his family has provided for him to have all the time and resources he needs to be the best version of himself. He recognizes this and loves his family dearly, even though he and his mother have their policy disagreements.
He owes a lot to the United Republic military, as well. Like many Fire Nation enlistees, he did a few years in the Fire Navy before being 'loaned' to the United Republic. The UR is where the world's excitement is, with all the drama that seems to seek it out and the incompetent leadership that turns every situation into a disaster. Iroh fully enjoys the structure and community, despite his tendency to "creatively interpret" his orders, and the regimented climb through the ranks gave him the time and framework to work on his skills. He is a royal, so of course he started as an officer, but he didn't use his status as a way to leap straight to the top. But, granted, his commanding officers tried to be nice to the next ruler of the Fire Nation unless he disobeyed really important orders. So one of the things he learned in his early years was how to peel potatoes, but knife skills are something his family are big on, so he just had to learn how to apply those early lessons to spuds.
It was a similar climb through the ranks that got him married. Despite having so many qualities of a romantic hero, Iroh is a not a love-at-first sight kind of guy. His childhood friend was indeed just a friend during childhood, and he had both boys and girls as friends, despite attending the Boys Academy until graduation. That particular friendship grew into being best friends, and then the best friends fell in love, and then they cautiously explored a new level in their relationship, and then they married their best friend just like the common wisdom. To an outsider, it looked inevitable, but again, for Iroh it was a steady grind that required work (including writing daily letters from wherever he was stationed) and lots of careful thought. His mother, at least, could guess where things were going fairly early on compared to everyone else (or perhaps she was influenced by her hopes and lucky), so she laid the groundwork for the formal arrangements when the time came. His marriage was something they never argued about.
One thing Iroh never quite mastered, though, is arguing itself. He has trouble understanding how what is self-evident to him can be so opaque to other people, and so he has trouble convincing anyone of something more complicated than "If we attack this place, we can win." Again, his place in the military served him well in this, because they've never been big on their people being able to argue at a higher level. He's going to have to put a lot of work into this before he can become Fire Lord; people seem to get nervous when a Fire Lord doesn't want to talk through a conflict.

ATLA Live Action Episode 6: Overall Thoughts.
I have mixed feelings about this one. It made the least changes from the original, which means I have nothing really to commend it on that the original didn’t already do, but at the same time, I don’t have anything to complain about either. In isolation, it is a very good episode of television. In isolation, it’s the best episode yet, but I have a harder time crediting it because most of the good stuff in here is from the original. Onto the specifics:
This episode continued the trend I don’t love of Aang being just a vessel for cliché heroic lines. I get that the show is supposed to have a more mature tone, and maybe some of Aang’s more childish traits wouldn’t have translated well, but they could have at least put SOMETHING interesting in there.
In terms of the Aang/Roku scene, I didn’t love it. I don’t like this “the avatar must not have friends” dilemma the show is pushing. It’s tired. We’ve seen it in every fantasy show. A variation of this could work as part of Aang’s work, but it doesn’t work as his central conflict. It’s too overdone.
Also, Katara wasn’t in this episode, so I couldn’t get annoyed at them for butchering her character. Definite plus.
Another plus was June! Didn’t love her flirting with Iroh but she was fun and entertaining. Arden Cho did a wonderful job. I hope they bring her back more, she’d be a great recurring fun character to have around.
I did love all the stuff with Zuko. I loved the juxtaposition between younger, idealistic, naive Zuko and current, hardened Zuko. Even though live action Zuko is softer than animated Zuko, this episode really did a good job of showing how he has been hardened by his experiences, relative to what he once was. I liked his conversation with Aang, and how the two clearly have a connection despite their circumstances. I generally like it when those types of stories are played out in a non-romantic context because it’s so rare. A lot of the lines between them were a bit cliché, but they worked (except for the line going right into the flashback where Aang was like “You can’t have always been this way. That one was a little heavy handed).
In terms of the flashback itself:
Younger Zuko seems softer and more naive than animated Zuko, which works with the way we see Zuko here. He had a lot of good lines, especially his line about giving the weak a chance. I know some people didn’t like that he fought back against Ozai in the Agni Kai, but to me it worked. It showed that he was still trying to please his father, and just how willing he was to sacrifice his morals to do it (though not willing enough for Ozai).
Speaking of Ozai, I find it interesting how he’s portrayed here. The original show portrayed him as very uncaring, willing to banish Zuko for disobedience but not really caring if he came back. Here it almost seems like he genuinely thinks this is good parenting, like he genuinely believes this will make Zuko stronger. Obviously he’s still horrible and abusive, but I actually think it works better than the original. It goes hand in hand with how he seems to really think he’s doing the right thing for the world with the FN (because newsflash…that’s what imperialism is!) A villain who really thinks they’re right is always more interesting than one who just wants power and is horrible. I think they could do interesting things with him and I’m intrigued.
Iroh was really sweet in this episode. I liked that he tried to stop Ozai from having the Agni Kai, and that he was with Zuko afterwards. It always puzzled me why he didn’t do that in the first place, and while Iroh having flaws makes sense (he should have flaws!) that particular flaw didn’t seem right, so I liked that addition.
And rounding out the fire family flashback (haha alliteration!) we have Azula. She didn’t really do anything here but the bangs were a great choice! I found it a bit weird that the camera kept zooming in on her expression during Zuko’s burning, but her expression was very neutral. It’s another change I like from the original. I think Azula smiling in the original works and is super interesting, but this show is clearly taking steps to make her more humanized right off the bat, which I appreciate as an Azula stan who has to deal with…many people who don’t see her as human. I’m not sure what to make of her expression, but I did notice that it’s the same one she used when Ozai burned the spy in episode 3 (good job Lizzy Yu!) It seems like a mix of fear and joy and detachment, like she’s trying to relish it but also she knows it could happen to her, but she doesn’t want to admit that, and also she just wants to detach from what’s happening. It can be interpreted in many ways!
One minor thing: I didn’t like that this Agni Kai was outside. The really dark, all red, fiery throne room looked a lot more menacing. And they literally already have that set! Having it outside made it look so much more mundane.
Back to the present:
Blue Spirit escape sequence was great! Again, basically torn from the original so no surprise there. I appreciate that they didn’t feel the need to change everything, and the mask looked great. I also loved Iroh’s last line about the mask being the real you. That’s a theme that could come back for a number of characters (Aang, Zuko, Katara, Azula, Mai and Ty Lee…) And I did get this spoiled, but the addition of Zuko’s crew being the 41st was great. Lovely. Super sweet. A wonderful way to pull at the heartstrings.
I’ll give this episode a 9/10. A very strong episode of television, but I can’t give it a 10 because the strongest stuff is plucked from the OG.

Fire Lord Zuko and Iroh
One thing that will never sit well with me in regard to the post-war Avatar: The Last Airbender world, especially as presented in the comics series, is the fact that Iroh gets so easily out of the mess of reforming Fire Nation and have relative happy ending, while 17 years old Fire Lord Zuko is left to deal with all the political shitty nightmare on his own.
And look, I get the storytelling goal of the new generation stepping in and “repairing” the world the previous generation fucked up and all. But Zuko is not just forced to undo damage done by his father’s six years of regime or Sozin and Azulon, but by Iroh as well, because Iroh was part of the Fire Nation set to conquer other people. It was Iroh that besiege a Ba Sing Sai for 600 days - it was him who joked about burning the city to ashes in his letter to beloved family - and who didn’t finish the task only because his son died, with little regard to how many of Fire Nation soldiers or Earth Kingdom soldiers and civilians was killed through the almost two years because he had once a vision he will take the Ba Sing Sai.
Zuko’s formal education ended at the age of 13,  when his father burned his face and banished to chase Avatar that no one saw for hundred years already. Sure, the animation series showed that Iroh was teaching his nephew both firebending and what makes one a good leader but what Zuko experienced and learned during his banishment is not exactly the equivalent of political knowledge he will need as Fire Lord who must find a way to rehabilitate Fire Nation in the eyes of the world but also figure out how to reform an imperialistic and military country into peaceful society with stable economy. A country that saw him as disgrace and traitor not so long ago, mind you.
And as much I see a merit in Iroh’s decision to pass the throne to Zuko - the Avatar’s friend and firebending master, him choosing tea shop over Zuko is just so fucking wrong to me. Iroh literally admitted Zuko was like a son to him in the first season and spent the next one trying to keep his nephew safe from their horrible family and other dangers and I’m supposed to believe when Zuko officially became Fire Lord with not only political nightmare to solve peacefully but also his abusive father to keep an eye on* and younger sister with mental breakdown, Iroh just… washed his hands from those problems so he could enjoy tea and Pai Sho game in peace? In Ba Sing Sai of all possible places with no consequence? Like, seriously?
Legend of Korra strongly implies Zuko did a good job and had a healthy relationship with his family, as both Fire Lord Izumi and General Iroh II seem to be fine people on their own. Which is great and nice! But does Zuko really need to deal with problems created by his predecessors all by himself where there is alive Iroh, the actually fully trained, educated Crown Prince to help him get a grip of the political matters at least in the first few years of Zuko’s rule? I really want to know what Iroh was thinking? Give a throne to Zuko and hope the boy will survive all the assassination attempts and magically figure out how to deal with the consequences of war that lasted for 100 years?
I like Iroh but I’m not blind to his flaws and him being part of White Lotus should not be a free pass from the problems he helped create in the first place.
*Aang finding a way to stop Ozai without killing him is great for him and I’m happy he managed to do so while staying true to his own culture but he is not the one that is left to deal with Ozai for upcoming years. Taking Ozai’s bending doesn’t magically erase his abuse toward Zuko and Azula and the man still has political supporters that made Zuko’s life much harder and more dangerous than the kid deserves.

AU Bot Plots
Tumblr media
Zuko is a fantastic pianist. A prodigy from an impressively young age, and in another family, that might mean something. Zuko breaks his neck trying to prove to his business tycoon father and budding politician sister that his piano playing isn't just some easily dismissed hobby. He becomes world famous and has played for people of prominence that even his father couldn't get a phone call with. But it's still not enough.
One day, his father says something awful, and Zuko has a crisis when he realizes that he built his entire career to win the approval and love of a father who refuses to give it, and he walks away from the piano altogether, becoming a recluse (who works sometimes at his uncle's tea shop when Iroh worries he's spending too much time alone). He meets Katara when she stops in to the shop. She knows who he is immediately and is surprised to find the world famous pianist working the counter at some random tea shop. They have a conversation and Zuko finds out Katara is also a musician. She invites him to an open jam session where her band will be playing. It's not a show, and anyone who is so inclined can join the band to play. Zuko is hesitant because he's still got some issues around music and performing. Still he's intrigued and he goes to at least watch the performance.
It Is AWFUL!!!
There's no real rhyme or reason to anything that's being played. It sounds like disjointed songs being played all at once. The 'performers" don't all have the same skill level, so there's a fantastic drummer keeping time to a guitarist who only knows two chords, and the person on the keyboards just went through an awful break up and is taking it out directly on the keys. Katara is playing the bass, but the levels are so wonky that Zuko feels her playing more than actually hears it.
Zuko leaves, vowing never to come to this slaughterhouse of sound ever again. But of course, he does come back. The sound is awful, but the people didn't demand too much of him. The ones that paid him any mind at all were really nice. The next time he comes back, Katara offers him the drum sticks. He reminds her that he plays the piano, but Katara insists he gives the drums a try. After a few timid whacks at it, he starts to hit harder and harder and harder until he's just pummeling the drums without any consideration for actual musicality. He stops when he breaks the snare drum and realizes that he's crying. He runs away, and Katara follows him to make sure he's okay. She tells him that what he's feeling is the point of her little musical club. It's not about sounding perfect, it's about working out emotions through the music.
At some point it comes out that Katara knows who Zuko is because she is also a gifted classical musician. Her instrument is the cello, but she never made it as far as Zuko. Then she discovered the guitar and experimental trash punk and never looked back. She is also part of a band that plays actual music and actual shows, too, which Zuko gets to go to at some point. Katara's band is surprisingly (to Zuko) very good. The music is still pretty unconventional, but it's...recognizable as music. Skillfully played music.
The story ends with Zuko coming to terms with his trauma around trying to please his father with his career and rediscovering his genuine love for the piano. He returns to the classical music circuit, and is occasionally joined by his girlfriend, Katara, on cello, when she's not recording with her band

KyouHaba bender headcanons because I love avatar and kyouhaba.
Kyoutani as an earth bender or fire bender. To be honest I can see both so I'll break each one down.
1.Earth bender. I think this one fits a little more than fire. The forms for earth bending feel closer to his character than the forms for fire bending. Fire bending is mostly based off of different forms of martial arts, which is a lot more precise and calculated, while earth bending feels a lot more about being aggressive and rough while bending, which is the opposite. And it's known with characters like Toph and Korra that earth benders can definitely be pretty feisty and aggressive like Kyoutani. Additionally, he looks good in green.
2.Fire bender. This one also definitely feels like an aggressive form of bending. Fire does tend to represent anger, after all. And again, almost all fire bending characters tend to be feisty and aggressive like Kyoutani. While it is possible to create and bend your own forms in fire bending, it is a lot harder to do so than in earth bending. As Iroh says, Zuko only unlocked his full potential once learning how to properly fire bend after releasing his anger. Therefore, fire makes a little less sense to me than earth.
Although it's rare, it's possible he could be a lava bender, which is kind of like a mix between the two kinds of bending. Then I don't have to decide on one lol.
Yahaba as a water bender or non bender. Again I can see both so here they are broken down.
1.Water bender. Both of these make the same amount of sense to me. I like water like 1% more though. Water bending is very controlled and exact which works for Yahaba. It can also be an aggressive form though, with things such as ice and blood bending, which makes the most sense for him with the more hidden part of his personality. I also like to think Oikawa would be a water bender and would continue to be his mentor in bending. Additionally, he looks good in blue.
2.Non bender. I like this one too. He would most likely use a weapon of some sort, like all other non benders. Him being a non bender represents him being average and unimportant. But just like other non benders, he doesn't let the fact limit his potential and he continues to grow despite it. He'd have this sort of "wishing to be a bender to be unique and strong like the others" mindset which later turns into "I'm unique and strong because I'm not a bender" mindset. It could represent his growth as a character very well.
