It would make sense that Hathaway would want to distance himself from Bright, being seen as only his son and not his own person would probably be very demoralizing.
He’s such an interesting character, how he in essence is just trying to justify the deaths that happened during Char’s Counterattack by continuing his ideologies.
However it’s hard to say whether he even believes what he’s fighting for, or whether or not he just feels required too after the deaths of Chan and Quess that he is kinda responsible for.
So how about a nice and simple topic to start with:
What is up with Hathaway's hair?
(Definitely not prompted by someone else)

(Img source below cut)
So let's stick with the green-brown color for this one. (as opposed to the black-brown because this doesn't matter either way)
First of all we have to notice that Hathaway at base is someone who specifically wants to be himself, he wants to be understood as himself. CCA is the first showing of this, along with the first time he's an actual character, everyone and I do mean everyone during Char's Rebellion couldn't care any less about how Hathaway feels, from Bright just actually forgetting his existence (according to "The man Who Could Not Ride the Rainbow), Amuro thinking that seeing war is good for him to Quess being too far gone to even tell him no. Almost every character who interacts with Hathaway during the movie just doesn't care what he thinks, used to add to the theme of "the old generations are failing the new ones".
Coming back to the hair thing, Hathaway gets the color from Bright, they both share it. Also in Gundam Hathaway and in Hathaway's Flash novel Hathaway only ever complains about how Brights clout has made no one want to interact with Hathaway Noa, just the son of Bright Noa. This would be enough wouldn't it? To explain that Hathaway changed the hair simply to add that degree of separation from his father.
But there's one more, after CCA Hathaway pretends to not be doing things out of emotion alone, he always acts like there's some material justification to his emotional response, Gigi for example:
Hathaway says he's saving her cuz she might be a spy but is actually doing it because he cares about her.
So to him justifying the hair color change comes from trying not to stand out, green is not a usual hair color, so instead he changes it to the 2nd most popular in the world, and now he's not worried about being an emotional baby in his own mind.
Another tid-bit about the hair is that Hathaway now shares a hair color with Amuro Ray, in-universe I think this might be that subconscious bid for Bright's attention, but on a meta level this represents that Hathaway's ideology draws connections to the White Devil himself. Hathaway is often described as a combination of Char and Amuro, through Char's lack of faith in the change of the RF and Amuro's faith that humanity will change.
Hathaway's hair is a minor but multifold connection to his character and arc and on a meta level represents his arc in a microcosm of dyed keratin.
Tomorrow: Amuro Ray, Bright Noa and fence sitting of tired veterans. (Throwing rocks with this one I know, but idrc)

Irma Lair; your gifts
like & rb if it resonates ♡
01.
Shufflemancy: John my beloved by Sufjan Stevens
you probably already know this, and have heard it time after time, but you're very sensitive. not in a bad way, except when it overwhelms you and drains all your energy, but you are insanely intuitive. you may struggle a lot with your faith in humanity. one day you're snuggled up in bed sobbing over compilations of human kindness, then the next you log on twitter and declare humanity irredeemable. and worst of all you feel so alone. it's frustrating feeling like those around you go through the motions of life seemingly unaffected by the constant eldrich horrors around every corner. you know that it's not that they don't care, but sometimes you might secretly wish you could have a sip of whatever it is that's numbing them down. finding supportive and understanding friends to surround yourself with is important to your well-being because harsh words and criticism can bruise you harder than most. this sensitivity may sometimes feel more like a burden than a gift, but i assure you that there's a lot of positives to it.
you are naturally inclined to do well with energy healing and may develop clairvoyance on top of your already prominent clairsentience, and quickly learn how to wield these abilities. your compassionate nature makes you a very good source of comfort and support for others and you're able to gently guide others in a way that isn't intrusive, so many would flock to you for advice if you opened up shop as an emotional support human of some kind. be sure to safeguard your own energy and do as much or as little as you want and can when you hone your skills should you decide to practice any kind of divination or spiritual practice. even outside of more spiritual things you'd make good use of your gifts in teaching, psychology, or medicine. you put people at ease and it's easy for others to get attached to your energy, and you just as easily get a little too invested from time to time, so be sure to keep your boundaries clear and take plenty of time for yourself to recharge and ground yourself.
02.
Shufflemancy: Brittle bones Nicky by Rare Americans
some call it chaos, you call it fun. you have a knack for entertaining a crowd. even if you're shy around people you don't know well enough, those closest to you know you best for your creative genius. you're an engaging communicator and storyteller, and have a lot of ideas swirling around your brain. you really should get some of it out before you get dizzy. you'd make a terrific writer, artist, a performer, or public speaker. yes, even if that last one made your stomach churn a little. you're very likeable and fun, and you'd draw a lot of attention if you just put yourself out there. lots of people could use your zest for life and learn a lot from the stories you could tell, whether real or fictional.
music, cinema, theatre, story driven games, and literature may be things you find a lot of joy in. you're inclined to develop clairaudience, and you may already notice auditory cues and coincidences more than most, and find a lot of guidance and motivation from the music you listen to or from your own inner monologues that lead to aha moments. are you afraid of the spotlight? not sure where to start? if what's stopping you from pursuing your wildest dreams is a jumbled mess of what ifs and lists of things you need to perfect and reconfigure and practice until your face turns blue, stop. you're already good at cartwheeling your way through life, talking yourself in and out of things and thinking on your feet, so you absolutely got what it takes to just go, and figure out the minute details along the way.
03.
Shufflemancy: Pavlov's daughter by Regina Spektor
people usually hire staff to do all that you're able to do all on your own. you're very well-rounded. a jack of all trades, perhaps? you're intelligent, practical, and very creative. you'd make a great entrepreneur because you're such a hardworker once you set your sight on something you want to achieve. you seem to have a deep trust in your own strength and abilities. you're emotionally strong and very independent. freedom is likely a big motivator for you, and being your own boss sounds very appealing to you. you're claircognizant and just seem to know what needs to be done and also get things done. you're an incredible taskmaster and do well with organising your thoughts and ideas and solving problems that pop up.
manifestations must come easily to you, unless your ties to the 3d and a distinct flair of realism and tendency to 'believe it when you see it' holds you back from having faith. but there is nothing you couldn't do, and those limitations should be easy enough for you to clear. i mean, look at everything you've already done and what you're capable of when you decide that what you want is what you get! make sure to rest plenty, though. you're often at risk of burnout because you strive when you have things to do and may have a hard time kicking back to relax when you could be spending that time doing something. even your hobbies align with your goals or fit right into your resume, so do try to find something to do that isn't so much about chasing accolades as it is simply enjoying yourself for the sake of pure enjoyment.

An Analysis of a Hero (based on the projects I am working with @artsofmetamoor )
So speaking on Diomedes with several friends so far gave me immense inspiration (which is also why I include the name to the tags). And so, I took the courage of speaking of another technically war-raised child. Caleb. Caleb is one of the deuteragonists to the comic series W.I.T.C.H released in early 2000s and later on property of Disney, and protagonist on the series of the same name that is a Disney property and aired by Jetix in the early 2000s.
W.I.T.C.H is a high fantasy teen story that has the acronym of the 5 protagonists Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia and Hay Lin who posess the powers of the 5 elements of nature (Aether, Water, Fire, Earth and Air) respectfully who have as mission to protect a veil that is separating earth from the opressed kingdom/planet of Meridian (also known as Metamoor) while combating the forces of Prince Phobos who snatched the throne from his sister, the rightful heir and rules the kingdom as a tyrant. Caleb, the character in question is the young man who has taken the role of the leader of a rebellion against the prince and who served many years for the best interest of his people.
Born in War
Just like our beloved Diomedes, Caleb seems to have been raised at war. His origins differ depending on media; the TV series has him as the son of the previous Rebel Leader and a witch but the comic origins seem to be much deeper than that. In the comic series Caleb is a Whisperer. A Whisperer is a magical creature in the form of a plant that is supposed to serve the will of the master who created them. Plot twist; his creator is Phobos himself! Caleb was supposed to be a soulless servant who careied the wish of his master. This part was actually used for the story I am working with my friend @artsofmetamoor
Broke the shacles
Caleb, somehow, managed to gain his free will and intelligence. In the comics or rather an extra issue that came later, it is hinted that Caleb gained his final shape immediately. In our story with my friend, he is coming as a child. But even as a child he realizes that the environment he was in was not good for him so he ran away. He was eventually discovered and rescued by his adopted father Julian (his biological father in the cartoon) who takes him in.
A Promising Genius
Caleb was proven highly intelligent from very early age. For example in the TV series we see him coming up with plans in a second even if he is officially 15-16-17 years of age in the series. This is actually the concept we follow in our story. Caleb was taken in by Julian as a baby named after Julian's own son who was violently killed by Phobos's regime (headcanon). From day one he was raised to be his father's son. He was raised to protect himself not only from the regime but also from the terrifying creatures at war. That happened because of his mind showing such potential, finding clever solutions in every corner. Julian knew he would be not only a worthy heir but also surpassing him (which does happen). Caleb brings the rebellion to its full potential, adding more people to the cause, including other races and sub-races of Meridian and the entirety of Metamoor including Raio, a noble-born who was inspired enough to follow him.
Born in the fire of War, Raised to its Art
As mentioned above, from very early on, Caleb was introduced to the art of war and the several ways to survive. That meant that he had very small childhood or very faintly enjoyed. Caleb was taught martial arts, sword and combact tactics ever since he was a kid. He would also use these in everyday life not only to avoid war but also predators in the forests. He and his adopted brother, Diego were basically children of war and tragedy
What is more Julian dissappeared after a dramatic battle and Caleb had to technically take over as the leader of the rebellion to the tender age of 14 years of age. Despite his young age, under the careful guidance of some of the older and more experienced members of the Rebellion, Caleb grew into a marvelous leader making him already known to the surroundings by the age of 15.
Caleb received an aditional training coicidentally while still running for his life, by one of the many different Galhot races that exist in Meridian, called Tribes. A society of enormous warriors and blacksmiths who mostly live by hunting, gathering and exchanging goods with each other or other Meridian cities. He was trained by a woman by the name of Dilla, who later on becomes his partner and bodyguard during the Rebellion.
A difficult and probably ultimately a bad decision
Caleb begins having strange dreams about a young woman that was later to become the Earth Guardian. Perplexed by his emotions as well as his concern about hurting Dilla with them, he breaks up their relationship and Dilla is to return to her village. Caleb ultimately would regret that decision for the rest of his life.
Betrayed and Imprisoned
For those who followed my friend's work, know that Caleb was betrayed and imrisoned by the very brother he would protect with his life at all occasions; Diego. Diego, the Shapeshifter, someone capable of taking someone's form by absorbing their life essence, imprisons him and uses him as a battery to recharge himself thus stealing his life. Caleb suffered an eternity during his captivity with the knife o betrayal cutting the worst
Hitting Rock Bottom
After his release (details to be shown in the upcoming comic) Caleb hits rock bottom, roaming about Meridian not knowing what to do, using booze which hopes it will end his life. Rescued as if by a miracle by Dilla who helps to nurse him back to health.
Desire for a quiet life
Unlike many examplesof heroes @artsofmetamoor and I worked a lot on the ideas behind Caleb's future. However we realized that what Caleb truly would have wanted was to settle and have a quiet life; settle down be peaceful and have a family!
He finds this stability to Dilla with whom he also finally after so long time gets to have a son with called Kai.
However difficulties will rise once more when tragedy brings Cornelia back into his life just with a different context!
What makes Caleb the Hero;
Caleb is deeply flawed character; he makes crucial mistakes on his way to achieving peace and some of them are due to his ignorance while others due to his harsh life. However what makes him the hero is that he tries his best for those he loves; he goes through trials and ordeals and he has to come out of them as strong as possible to protect others and succeed in his mission at war. He also survives these ordeals not because he never bended but because he learns to get back up again even after hitting the worst way possible rock bottom.
In our stories we do aim to give him the same if not more screentime to open his wings as in the series but with the complexity of the origins of his comic counterpart and we hope to inspire other people follow the example of aiming to become better and better, aiming to overcome your difficulties and that it is never too late to do so.
We also kinda wanna inspire people that the "dream big" doesn't need to be some successful career or some sort of a loud bang in your life. Despite the fact that our Caleb in our story receives the same amount of love and recognition by the people he helped and that he is satisfied with that as well up to one point, ultimately Caleb's goal was to be calm and have a good life; his ultimate destination according to his dream is to be a house-husband who wants to live in his village and take care of his son instead of some sort of successful businessman or warrior however we do not aim to say he loses his masculinity either; he is deeply concerned for his family and protects them and provides for them as well in his own way. His motivations are clearly out of love and caring for his family, for which he has worked so much for . Having a family and protecting it is for him one of the most important things.
Caleb is also a person with deep concern for people around him and society he lives into. In one way we aim to show there is more than oe way one can be successful in their lives and that is something that comes out of nowhere sometimes.
Hero of a story is not just the person who saves the day (which is already important enough that's for sure) but someone that can potentially inspire other people do something or be better versions of themselves and that there is more than one way to achieve that. Plus that its okay to ask for help. Sometimes that is the hardest part of all.
Caleb reached for help and saved himself the same as he saved many people before. Saving himself was probably the most difficult and greatest achievement he ever did in my opinion despite his already heroic course in his life.

🌙 for Layla and Eddie
🐕 for Vallah and Aemond
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
IRMA!! Thank you for asking about BOTH of my blorbos!
🌙 (Layla and Eddie): who has to force the other into having healthy sleeping habits? How well does that go?
Layla is 10000000% trying to get Eddie to have better sleep habits. She has such a specific routine and she’s prefer he also adheres to it.
This doesn’t work though because she doesn’t NEED to sleep so now sometimes she’ll be up until 3am helping him write his next campaign or watching horror movies.
🐕 (Vallah and Aemond): Do they have any pets together? If one of them had a pet from before their relationship how well does the pet get along with their partner? Do they have the pets approval or does said pet sit in between them and their partner any time they try to make a move?
Vallah has a direwolf (Wraith) and Aemond of course has Vhagar. Vallah is absolutely terrified of the dragons but she has ridden Vhagar a few times. Their respective animals are… fine with the other. Sometimes Wraith will lay between them in bed or whine at the door until they stop what they’re doing and let her in.
Vhagar generally does not care about Vallah. That’s just One Eyed Visenya’s new concubine. HOWEVER! Vhagar is the first one to know whenever Vallah is pregnant. She can sense it and becomes much friendlier with Vallah. Vallah thinks she’s going to get eaten the first time this happens. Aemond has also taught Vallah enough High Valyrian so she can speak at Vhagar.

Mickey Mouse Family Crisis... and I need help.
Mickey mouse, golden child to Disney and recognizable character to most know and love. and when I was still in junior high or high school, I have become eggier to learn more about this character, who he is aside from being just a recognizable mascot to a major company.
and as if recent, I have revisited the Family tree to challenge myself in drawing all the members in the family (Minnie's family included.). though as I revisited, I realized that both trees are just as uncertain to some members present within the tree, even if they had sources from other Media and comic books regarding the family member's role. though, with different writers from different years, it resulted in chaotic, inconstant visual of the concept. I don't blame the people that made the tree's, nor do I blame the people hired to make/made stories for Disney revolving their beloved mouse. but I do feel that Disney has the opportunity to round out Mickie's lore and character more like they did for Donald duck.
so... I need help identifying some of the characters that appear in the trees.
to make this simpler and easy to follow, I'll start with the one I relied on the most: Adrien Miqueu's Family tree.

I was able to do research and find out most of the characters listed on the tree. however, some lack pictures, proving their existence isn't just a fan addition. and the ones that have a name and picture are too obscured to be found in a simple name search, to insure they're actually part of the family and not some random addition because they have the last name "Mouse".
characters in specific:
Irma Mouse(aunt to Minnie): I tried looking up on her name alone but received noting in searches. and I have used multiple other sources, such as Disney Wiki, Mickey's Wiki(his relatives), Family Mouse Category Wiki, Àrbol Genealogico De Mickey Mouse part 1 and part 2 (which was mostly referencing the other tree below) and TV Topes: Mickey Mouse's Family. none never mentioning Irma in the slightest. makes me wonder where he got this character in specific. and the possibility of her being an Only mentioned is highly possible, I just need confirmation.
The same situation falls on Ben(uncle to Minnie) and Annie Mouse(Aunt to Mickey). any confirmation on the character's existence is immensely appreciated.
is Mikiki Mouse actually a character? can't help but think that he's Mickey in his classic steamboat willie attire....
alleged great uncle and aunt to Mickey, these two catch my interest the most when it came to their identity. so, as like all the other members, I tried to google their names. nothing. that's okay, I have the other sources I used for cross referencing. still nothing.....
the reason to clarify whether or not they are actually part of the mouse family wasn't my full intention but as to see whether or not Captain O'Mouse was a separate character and not Kid Mouse with a different appearance. or that O'Mouse and Lily is Mickey and Minnie telling a story, like they did for Mickagnan.
once again, I'll be immensely grateful if any of the characters in this family tree is identified.
As we go on to the next family tree, I would have to inform that the image from google itself is incredibly blurry.
Credit goes to Gilles R. Maurice.

thankfully, I've managed to find the website he posted the family tree and screenshotted for a better read on their names!
characters aside for a moment, its fascinating to see members missing or added based on the information both the creators had at the time. this one in particular obtaining the most obscured characters XD. both actually forgot two other nieces of Minnie's entirely, Lily and Tiny (granted they haven't been published in the US comics yet...) but I digress.
Characters in specific:
Angus is an interesting case because he appears in both trees stated to be an Uncle to Minnie. however I'm not sure if he's married or born (adopted?) into the Family. this one doesn't necessarily need confirmation if it can't be provided but it would help figure out his position in the Family.
Topaze Mouse is considered an uncle(aunt?) to Minnie. again, I looked everywhere for his identity but nothing.
Manfred and Unnamed child are alleged nephew and niece, both characters being siblings. I need help knowing whether or not they are actual characters and not added members because they have the last name "Mouse" or look like one. there is a chance that the child is Melody, granted that that twin niece has a history of being singled out by Millie into a single child. being renamed Molly or added in a trio named Molly, Polly and Dolly. R.I.P Millie.
she's my favorite mystery "ancestor". the great-great aunt to Minnie. I worry that perhaps her character is similar to Mickagnan, and this is just Minnie in a different identity to tell a story. I can't recall if I found this character at some point in the past, if I'm just confusing it for a different member or if my brain came up with the wish of her being a lost relative to Minnie. Based on her looks alone, she kinda reminds me of Amy Johnson.....
and last but not least,
this mystery child.....
um... who is this? it's described in the tree that she is lover to Morty mouse, Mickey's Nephew, so I don't think she's necessarily a mouse... but my sister has pointed out she looks more like a dog. she lacks a name so a simple name search couldn't be executed for her case, but I don't know much of the comics either to really try and find a similar style.. and it looks quite old too. and i have to be sure this is actually a legit relationship and not shipping.
any who... these are the characters that made me walk in circles for minutes on end finding no results of any kind, not so much as a smidge of hint or mention. if anyone has any idea of the characters, you are free to do a reblog to confirm their relation to the mouse family, add any potential missing members or additional facts about them if you wish. and again, I'm aware that because an image isn't provided, doesn't mean they aren't mentioned... and randomly added hopefully...
I wish you all a pleasant day, night, week and year, and thank you!
before you leave.... wanna see something crazy?
*drops you this and runs away*

I was re-reading TLE1 and I remember this:
"“I know Walburga,” said Mrs. Potter darkly. “She was briefly engaged to a cousin of mine, as a matter of fact. I say briefly because he ran off and married a Muggle instead”
Sirius’s jaw dropped"
My jaw dropped too. I want to know more about this story. Did wally like this guy? Who was him? Where did he meet the muggle? How were wally and this guy together? Were they happy in some way? Were wally softer in her youth or this love delusion made her the well known psyco? Did this unrequited love for this man have something to do with the failed marriage with Orion (like robert baratheon always in love with Lyanna stark instead of his wife Cersei?) and with the betrayal with Druella? were orion and druella in love but then they had to marry other blacks? I want to know the background. I want to know the drama 🔥 and how did the blacks ended the scandal? Did Wally think about marrying Orion? Or her father? Did Alphard have a role in younger siblings' marriages to people they didn’t love? He could have done this, just to have fun
hehehe.
ok, I’ve joked in the past about how I basically have a TLE wiki from all the random notes and headcanons I’ve scribbled in my phone over the years but like………I kinda do.
For instance, I have a stupid amount of Black family backstory, some of which I’ll keep to myself because it’s probably going to end up in the story, and some of which is just superfluous info that no one really needs to know but exists anyway because my brain doesn’t shut up. Sometimes this backstory makes it into little lines like the one you referenced above. 🙃
Anyway, here’s (part) of my TLE wiki bio of Walburga because why the heck not 😂
(This was written a long time ago)
Walburga Black was born in 1925, the oldest child of Pollux and Irma Black. She had two brothers, Alphard and Cygnus, for whom she never much cared. This was partly based on resentment: the Blacks, being an ancient family, followed ancient rules of inheritance. Despite being the first born child, Walburga, a female, would inherit nothing. It’s hardly surprising, then, that she viewed Alphard as her usurper.
Alphard, for his part, did not play the role of heir particularly well. He was extravagant in his tastes, liked expensive horses, racing, gambling and men. It became apparent early in life that Alphard would not carry on the Black family name. This meant, of course, that young Cygnus had a fair amount of responsibility on his shoulders. Walburga, who thought he was weak-minded and soft, resented him this all the more.
Walburga left Hogwarts in 1932 and it was arranged that she would marry Robert Burke, a pureblood from a respectable family. He was nearly ten years her senior, but Walburga was deliriously and unusually happy with this arrangement. While it might be premature to say that she loved Robert, she was certainly infatuated with him, and boasted of her esteemed engagement. Alas, the feeling was not mutual. Robert, 28 and unhappy, ran off and eloped with a Muggleborn witch. Walburga was humiliated, shamed, and utterly furious. She never got over the slight, and in some ways, her exceptional fanaticism for blood purity could be traced back to this moment.
In 1949, Cygnus married Druella Rosier, who was 9 years his senior. It was an arranged marriage, naturally, but mutually beneficial. A few years later, in 1951, Druella gave birth to her first child, a girl named Bellatrix. In 1955, following the birth of Cygnus and Druella’s third daughter, Narcissa, Walburga consented to marry her cousin, Orion Black. Walburga was 30 years old — Orion was 26 — and she was beginning to feel anxious. There had been no other suitable marriage offers and Orion, though she had no passionate feeling towards him whatsoever, offered a great deal that was important. Primarily, she would keep her beloved name. The two married in 1956 and ultimately took over 12 Grimmauld Place, the home in which Orion had been raised — his parents having moved out to a house in Wiltshire, to give them the space. Orion and Walburga’s marriage was not a particularly happy one, though neither of them expected nor wished it to be. There was no affection between them, no warmth, no intimacy. All they really shared was a devotion to their name, the honor and privilege that being a Black bestowed upon them. It was a duty, their marriage, and both saw it as such. The duty, of course, was to produce heirs to the Black name.
By 1957, Walburga was pregnant with her first child. However, she would tragically miscarry. For someone whose own self-worth was so reliant on her ability to produce a male heir for the Black family, this was a nearly unsurvivable blow. But she carried on. It took two more years for her to have a successful pregnancy, but on November 3, 1959, Sirius Orion Black was born. Roughly a year and a half later, on June 19th, 1961, Walburga gave birth to a second son, Regulus Arcturus Black.
Walburga was delighted by her sons, not because she felt overwhelming affection for the two children, but rather because they secured her victory over her brothers. She was the sole keeper of the Black family name. Her children would be heir to the entire Black fortune.
etc etc etc

Vivian tsked, "You should've just taken theatre history like the rest of us."
"Don't patronize me!" She turned to look at Vivian, who was searching on her phone. "What're you looking for anyways? You've been on your phone since I got back from classes."
Vivian turned bright red. "Is it a girl?!" Fierce gasped, bolting upwards and scaring Apple. "Did you meet someone?"
Vivian stuttered, "W-well, I met someone in my biology lab today...it's not like that! I just think they're cool, and I'm wondering if they have an Instagram or something..."
Fierce smirked, "You're not fooling me. Have you found them?" Viv shook her head no, "Well give it here! I'm a master at this kind of thing." Vivian reluctantly handed her phone over to Fierce, watching over her shoulder. "What's their name?"
"Irma. Irma Gerd."

The rain just won't stop, Elizabeth thought gloomily as she crossed the narrow street towards the embankment. The perfume of Irma, who glided silently alongside her, was driving Elizabeth crazy. She tried to breathe more evenly, but the scent of lilies and musk, spread in the damp air, did not retreat and only tormented her more.
The embankment was grey, as everything had been in recent days. Elizabeth secretly rubbed her arm, which was sore from the damp. She had spent most of the previous night trying to ease the pain. She had risen early, sleep-deprived and empty like a shipwreck washed up on the beach. So exhausted that it could not even sink.
Elizabeth lowered her hand. She clutched the handle of her umbrella. Around four in the morning, she finally managed to fall asleep. She dreamed of Rudolf. Young and handsome, he stood on the steps of Mayerling and smiled. Elizabeth felt a twinge of jealousy at the mere sight of her son. She woke up, trembling and breathing heavily.
The man in black appeared out of nowhere. Crouched in the rain, he walked quickly toward her. He stopped and extended his hand. With her usual gracious expression, Elizabeth took the flower from him. She bowed her head in an affable manner. He leaned forward and grinned, then pushed her away and ran.
Shrugging her shoulders in bewilderment, Elizabeth continued on her way. Tiredly moving her legs, she thought that she shouldn't allow Irma to persuade her to go on this walk. It would have been better to stay home – to sleep or read. Stopping, she looked at the water. Irma's perfume smelled unbearable. Elizabeth began to feel pain in breathing. Tearing her hand from the hand of her maid of honor, who was muttering something indistinctly, Elizabeth threw the umbrella away in anger and rubbed her chest. She managed to feel how her fingers became sticky and damp. Beyond there was only darkness.
‘So the curtain falls. Everything ends.’
Elizabeth opened her eyes. It was dark, but the dampness and cold had disappeared somewhere. She was sitting on... something, in her black dress. No Irma or her perfume nearby.
‘I said the last dance would be mine.’
A quiet, cold voice. The movement of air. And footsteps.
She didn't understand right away; rather, guessed when the figure that had been there all her life, always slightly blurred, like an idea, a dream, or a possibility, became clear, emerging from the darkness.
She still doubted, looking at his straightened shoulders, at his half-lowered eyelashes, recognizing his light hair and the black cape that reached to his heels. But when he spoke again, she was sure: that man on the embankment must have been...
He stabbed her.
‘It's over. As I told you, I won.’ His voice sounded dull and sullen. He seemed tired. ‘So don't make me wait.’
Elizabeth stood up. She looked back. Then looked down at her old black dress. She pulled at the collar button and the dress slipped off, vanished, dissolving into the darkness. She was wearing a nightgown, the same one she had been wearing when she lay unconscious after the accident. The last time Elizabeth had seen it, she was fifteen.
Elizabeth smiled. She took a step, then another. She went up to Death and looked him in the eye.
‘Don’t keep me waiting,’ he repeated. ‘I’ll do the job, and you'll be free.’
And then she laughed. She laughed and laughed, throwing her head back and feeling herself become light and quick, as if in a dream, the way she had always yearned. The laughter trembled inside her, weightless and quiet, like dandelion seeds in the tall grass.
Still laughing, she touched Death's shoulder, ran her fingers down his cheek. He was hot. Hot as the sun. Hot as life itself.
‘Well, if you're in such a hurry, kiss me, my beloved businessman,’ she laughed, coming closer to him.
His expression changed from gloomy and tired to distrustful and then shone with such childish joy that Elizabeth snorted and buried her face in his shoulder. Hot fingers covered her hand on his cheek.
‘It tickles,’ Elizabeth said as he turned and kissed her palm.
Death released her hand and pulled Elizabeth to him, hugging her. The darkness around them dissipated. Now it resembled a summer twilight.
‘What dreams may come, when we have shuffled off this mortal coil?’ he said quietly.
Elizabeth smiled.
‘Life is not a dream. And death is not a dream. They are two sides of the same hill, though we do not know where the hill begins or ends. At its foot we meet, so that all that we feel will cease to be a dream.’
His lips were warm and soft. Elizabeth had imagined this kiss for years. She had thought about it at the most inopportune times. When she was kissed by the young page with whom she had locked herself in the castle pantry, drunk from how many rules she had broken. When she was kissed by Franz Joseph, who always had a fever on his lower lip. When the lips of a lovesick Hungarian boy, whose name she could never remember, were imprinted on her.
Each of them took something from her, each wanted something. With each of them, she recognized herself in some way or another. It seemed that recognition had a price. And Elizabeth was ready to pay it.
His lips did not take – they gave. They opened, breathing recognition and joy – gently stealing what she called her life, filling her in return with the liquid gold of living delight.
He carried her in his arms – or maybe she just flew up, throwing off everything heavy and unimportant. Elizabeth opened her eyes.
‘Look.’
Death put her down and kissed her bare shoulder. Raising her head, Elizabeth looked where he pointed.
Holding hands, they walked forward – to where the turquoise glow of a new day was flaring up.
