Throwback Thursday - "The Searcher" by Tana French #TheSearcher #IrishFiction #BookReview #ThrowbackThursday @TanaFrench
The Throwback Thursday meme was created by Renee over at It’s Book Talk (who seems to be taking a blogging hiatus). She made this meme to share some of her old favorites. Although all bookbloggers have an endless TBR pile, we seldom take the time to reflect back and post about some of the great reads from a few years ago. Sharing book recommendations is one of my most favorite things to do! I…

I’m Sorry I Never Had A Death Metal Band
It’s one of my biggest regrets. If only I had known as a teen that hardly anyone who starts a band has a clue what they’re doing, and very often lacks any real musical skill (at least in the beginning). If I could go back, I’d set aside all my unsatisfied, unacknowledged longing, my burnt-out admiration and I’d start a band, or just do it all myself.
As a teen I dreamed up names for my imaginary band. Holy Sepulchre would be cool, a nod to my first big love, Sepultura. While we were still finding our feet, people who knew us well could call us Holy Shit.
I’d get really lean and muscular. I’d wear long sleeve shirts and leather pants, the suggestion of abdominal muscles and discipline under forbidding, perpetual black, covering everything but clinging close to flat torso and long limbs. I’d sound like Jarboe by way of Killjoy from Necrophagia, with a Khanate flash of Alan Dubin. I’d be weird and creepy and hard to put your finger on, not quite female but certainly not male. I always thought I’d make a great front woman.
What a pity I didn’t understand that so much of doing a thing is not reflecting on it overmuch. I wonder how different my life would be if I applied this hard-earned learning to myself now instead of sighing over hindsight.

I didn't like Milkman at first but it grew on me. I recommend the audiobook as the narrator is fabulous. I also recommend reading/listening to this in large chunks to give enough time to sink into the story & the rhythm of words. * #funaekreads #funaekbooks #instabooks #instareads #manbookerprizewinner2018 #milkman #pugsandbooks #irishfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/B1fYPw-An8z/?igshid=s90qu7bh85ip

Hello everyone, hope your week is finishing off nicely. I was tagged in the #spillthetea challenge by the gorgeous @victoria_catherine_shaw and it looked like a lot of fun so here we go! T = a book that TAUGHT you something E = a book you never wanted to END A = an AUTHOR you can’t get enough of T - A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara This book was hands down the hardest and most powerful book I’ve ever read. I’ve had hard times in my life but this book taught me that there are other people out there that may be suffering too and to be mindful of that. I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone because it’s difficult to read but I learned so much. E - The Hearts Invisible Furies by John Boyne Whenever my friends ask me to recommend a book, this is what they get. I won’t ever stop going on about this book! I fell quickly in love with Cyril and his story and by the end, I was bereft at having to finish it, it felt like leaving a friend. A - Stephen King No surprises here for anyone who has followed me for a while! King and his books mean so much to me. Some of his books have got me through really tough times and I always feel so comforted every time I sit down with one. Quite aptly, my mug states: I’d rather be reading Stephen King. I would!! 🤣 I’d love to know your answers for this challenge so I’ve tagged a couple of people. No pressure though if you don’t want to join in! Let’s have a chat in the comments and you can let me know all your thoughts about my choices! #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramchallenge #favouritebooks #favouriteauthor #theinstitute #stephenking #diehardstephenkingfans #constantreader #theheartsinvisiblefuries #johnboyne #alittlelife #hanyayanagihara #teaandbooks #comfortreads #difficultreads #irishfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/CPG0WN5rJzE/?utm_medium=tumblr

Patrick McCabe is the king of macabre. ‘The Dead School’ originally appeared to be an innocent and pleasant read about the intertwining lives of two teachers with troubled childhoods. Instead, you could compare the conclusion of the novel to the scene in trainspotting where Renton is experiencing severe withdrawals from heroin - it’s a hellish nightmare that doesn’t seem to end, each hallucination more revolting than the last. What threw me over with McCabe’s novel was the ‘gooey mess’ of Setanta, a reference that will stick with any reader. It’s bloody brilliant. The childhoods of Malachy and Raphael are tragically corrupt and poignant, the juxtaposition of their love stories with some horrific experiences helping to boost riveting prose. My only complaint would be the banality of Raphael, but this is an attack upon his character rather than McCabe’s writing ability. 5/5 ⭐️ #book #books #bookstagram #ukbookstagram #mccabe #patrickmccabe #thedeadschool #dublin #catholicschool #contemporaryficton #irishfiction #fiction #horror #picador https://www.instagram.com/p/CMpV_wQFTeq/?igshid=1vsmomchzkd87

"No Strangers Here" by Carlene O'Connor - Book Review @KensingtonBooks #NoStrangersHere #ReadingIrelandMonth24 #IrishFiction #CarleneOConnor #CountyKerryMysteries
“There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t yet met.” – William Butler Yeats County Kerry Mystery #1 Dimpna Wilde was one of the most unique and enchanting characters I’ve encountered in some time. She is diminutive in size, colossal in heart, has been dealt many crushing blows in her life, yet she remains positive and funny. She works as a veterinarian and loves all animals without…

Check out this too #coolcover from @noexit! This 2-books-in-1 #policeprocedural has us flipping out 😄😱What follows: two tales of policeman Pat Coyne—a Dublin Dirty Harry. Headbanger: Garda Pat Coyne is a Dublin policeman who is passionately devoted to sorting out the world's problems. He sees cars, crime, pollution and golf as ominous signs of a disintegrating society. Coyne's principal mission is to deal with crime, Ireland's biggest growth industry. Though only a cop on the beat, he decides to take on the notorious gang leader, Drummer Cunningham. Sad Bastard: Garda Pat Coyne, aka "Mr. Suicide," is back. Injured in the line of duty, and living alone, he's become more obsessive and volatile, developing a fetish for women's knickers. When a body washes up on the docks, the prime suspect is none other than his son, Jimmy. Both Coynes are notorious for their spells of self-destruction. Coyne's estranged wife blames him, his mother-in-law berates him, and his therapist labels him psychotic. But when a duo of criminal thugs try to kill his boy, Coyne decides to straighten things out. #readcrime #favoritecover #coverreveal #mystery #crime #fictionaddiction #noexit #irishfiction #readmore (at Chicago, Illinois)

I'm delighted to welcome Run with the Hare, Hunt with the Hound by Paul Duffy to the blog #HistoricalFiction #IrishFiction #BlogTour #TheCoffeePotBookClub @PDufaigh @cathiedunn @thecoffeepotbookclub
I’m sharing an excerpt from Run with the Hare, Hunt with the Hound by Paul Duffy. Underworld I was still young when the fulcrum began its pitch. Fortune’s wheel clanking around in its inscrutable way. It was the year that the sky ships were seen in Ard Macha. A silver host, spectral and gold illuminated the heavens, emerging from the cloud with their glistening sails and their ghostly hosts…

Day 23 and I’m flagging
Day 23, only 5 days left in this self-imposed 28 days of posting challenge, and I’m flagging. There’s a heavy tiredness on me, like iron filings in my veins, making it hard to move or think. The last few days I’ve left it too late to write and post. Various Addictions and Horror & Fantasy were a real slog to smash out and shape up into something presentable. I quite liked Horror & Fantasy but felt nervous posting it. Porn is a subject that really divides opinion, and I didn’t want to give the impression I’m some kind of puritan evangelist.
What shall I write about today? The writing process, maybe? This challenge/experiment has been energising for the most part. It’s made a number of ideas much clearer and brought me closer to developing them with the detail they deserve. There have been plenty of moments of doubt along the way, too, especially after repeated re-reads (I haven’t forgotten about Francine Prose and Reading Like A Writer), which have left me questioning the fluency of my expression. So why post writing I’m not 100% happy with on the internet? As an attempt to move past restrictive perfectionism, to train my editing muscles and to impose the obligation of a schedule on myself, rather than being happy to dream about such and such a cool story I’ll write some day in the indistinct future. The benefits have so far outnumbered the growing pains.
Let’s see what the next 5 days bring.
