The cool thing about a horror movie that takes place in a mental hospital and, shockingly, actually turns out to be on the side of mentally ill people is that it avoids all the common disgusting pitfalls of mocking, demonizing, and infantilizing mentally ill people.

Spinning round and round till I'm dizzy, I find myself playing Pin the Tail on the Future, just another game in this kaleidoscope of kindergarten chaos.
I play Tag with my hopes and dreams, but I can never catch them.
I flee to the Seesaw of Past & Present, but there's nobody on it to balance me out.
So I jump on a Mood Swing and swing back and forth for hours, days, years.
I fear that this therapeutic play yard will be my actual graveyard.

We got family therapy. Twice. Both times we were so excited, going in hoping beyond hope that this would fix all of us. It took 7 years straight of begging and weaseling around defenses (from age 9 to 16).
The first time was in a PHP/IOP center, and the focus was still only on us. We were there for treatment, so we were the problem; the therapist only spoke about what we were doing wrong in the dynamic. When we got about ten minutes before or after to talk to her, we told her some of the lighter abuses — enough to get CPS called, but not enough to be taken away. We had disclosed emotional physical and sexual abuse. She told us that “everybody shows their ass around family.”
The second time was maybe a few months later, a referral to a real family therapist who also used CBT/DBT. Everybody’s walls were back up, and we all fawned like our lives depended on it. We were reprimanded nearly as much as our father, who would threaten violence and stand up every time he felt disrespected. She even told us off for using “mother dear” — it comes from a memoir about abuse, and our mother asked to be called that after reading it.
This time, too, whatever we disclosed was brushed off. She made sure to include everybody’s feelings in every decision, and that meant no reporting if there was a show of redress. Our family lied, we all fought and cued each other under the therapist’s nose, and eventually she decided we never needed family therapy to begin with.
We haven’t gone back to family therapy. Our collective opinion is that we live at university now, and that the family house hasn’t been home since we learned to sleep elsewhere.
We used to want a functional family more than anything. I don’t believe we’ll get that until everybody learns to unfawn. Deprogramming is hard, and probably not something we could safely do as a family. None of the rest of them will get there until they get over the therapy program, and we have tried every way we know how to undo it for them. We can’t.
Those therapists should not have been family therapists. The first one had opinions of children that invalidated all of their lived experiences, and the second couldn’t recognize dissociation even though she knew what it was. I can think of maybe three total skills our family got from both of them, and two of them just reinforce the don’t-talk/don’t-tell programs that make the family unit look normal.
This was in a city, with hundreds of therapists. Our family is still dysfunctional and under old coercion. The work is hard, but even a well-to-do family with near unlimited resources can’t find help. I don’t see us doing family therapy, but we can at least be a better resource than what we had.

My anxiety today is the worst it’s been in three years. In January 2020 I experienced a bad trauma at the dentist. I had horrible ptsd and had to go back into intensive outpatient psychiatric care. I’ve known since then that I have a few cavities. Recently one tooth has been sore once in a while, but last night started hurting. I got so anxious just thinking about having to go to the dentist, but I went on my insurance website and found a few locations that accept my plan. I just called one and have an appointment next Monday. I’m fucking terrified. I texted my sister, though, and she is going to come with me. I’ve always had anxiety surrounding going to the dentist, but since my trauma it’s been horrible. I’ve been shaking all day, crying on and off, and almost started dissociating at one point. And it’s just been/going to be a week, when it rains it pours. My dad is having major surgery on Friday morning, and my mom has some stuff going on. I’m just feeling overwhelmed. But at least I was brave enough to make the appointment, I’ve put it off as long as I could.

im not sure who, if anyone, needs to hear this from me but:
- getting help at a mental hospital is okay
- doing an inpatient program is okay
- doing a partial program is okay
- doing an intensive outpatient program is okay
i "graduate" from the iop ive been in for over a month on tuesday, and i can safely say this is one of the best decisions ive made for myself and my well-being.
ive learned so much about myself and why i think the way i do. ive learned how to cope with intrusive and catastrophizing thoughts. ive learned that i love group therapy and it's incredibly helpful to share with people in similar life paths as you. im still mentally ill, but i can cope much better now. you get out what you put in, and all the work has been incredibly worth it.
my only regret is not doing this sooner. i was struggling so incredibly hard and on a downward spiral since February. the stigma against these programs kept me from doing it sooner, and if even one person can see this and maybe take the steps to get the help they need, i'll have made at least a small difference.
tldr; get help if you need it. you are worthy and deserving, and stigmas are stupid.

Does anyone else absolutely fucking HATE IT when adults are nice to you???????? Like they say something kind and you are like what the FUCK??????? Today, for instance, I was doing my first individual therapy session with this guy and I was like yeah so here is a thing that my parents did when I was a kid and he was like, that’s not okay. And I was like yeah it sucked but it’s fine and he was like no. That’s not okay. That was a really fucked up thing for them to do. I’m sorry that happened. And instead of being like THANK you like a normal person my response was to glare at him and say “Okay” in the most monotonous voice I have ever managed because FUCK YOU JUSTIN FUCK YOU WHAT THE FUCK. I HATE YOU. Is this a thing or am I just weird?
