In a new study Prof. Jeffrey Hubbell, and fellow researchers from the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME), describe a new “inverse vaccine” that in a lab setting can stop autoimmune reactions which attack a person’s healthy tissues, as seen in diseases multiple sclerosis, type I diabetes, or rheumatoid arthritis.

Inverse Vaccine already cleared Stage 1 Safety trials.
Initial phase I safety trials of a glycosylation-modified antigen therapy based on this preclinical work have already been carried out in people with celiac disease, an autoimmune disease that is associated with eating wheat, barley and rye, and phase I safety trials are under way in multiple sclerosis.

Holy shit.
Researchers at the University of Chicago have been able to create an ‘inverse vaccine’ that can remove the immune systems memory of specific molecules.
Reading that, sounds like a horrendous bio weapon in the making. But the plan is for it to be used to treat autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, type one diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
This was already proven to be able to prevent autoimmunity but the new work shows it can be used to treat ongoing autoimmune issues.

The job of the immune system’s T cells is to recognize unwanted cells and molecules — from viruses and bacteria to cancers — as foreign to the body and get rid of them. Once T cells launch an initial attack against an antigen, they retain a memory of the invader to eliminate it more quickly in the future.
T cells can make mistakes, however, and recognize healthy cells as foreign. In people with multiple sclerosis, for instance, T cells mount an attack against myelin, the protective coating around nerves.
Hubbell and his colleagues knew that the body has a mechanism for ensuring that immune reactions don’t occur in response to every damaged cell in the body — a phenomenon known as peripheral immune tolerance, which is carried out in the liver. They discovered in recent years that tagging molecules with a sugar known as N-acetylgalactosamine (pGal) could mimic this process, sending the molecules to the liver where tolerance to them develops.
“The idea is that we can attach any molecule we want to pGal and it will teach the immune system to tolerate it,” explained Hubbell. “Rather than rev up immunity as with a vaccine, we can tamp it down in a very specific way with an inverse vaccine.”

The Best News of Last Week - March 18
1. FDA to Finally Outlaw Soda Ingredient Prohibited Around The World
An ingredient once commonly used in citrus-flavored sodas to keep the tangy taste mixed thoroughly through the beverage could finally be banned for good across the US. BVO, or brominated vegetable oil, is already banned in many countries, including India, Japan, and nations of the European Union, and was outlawed in the state of California in October 2022.
2. AI makes breakthrough discovery in battle to cure prostate cancer
Scientists have used AI to reveal a new form of aggressive prostate cancer which could revolutionise how the disease is diagnosed and treated.
A Cancer Research UK-funded study found prostate cancer, which affects one in eight men in their lifetime, includes two subtypes. It is hoped the findings could save thousands of lives in future and revolutionise how the cancer is diagnosed and treated.
3. “Inverse vaccine” shows potential to treat multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases
A new type of vaccine developed by researchers at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) has shown in the lab setting that it can completely reverse autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes — all without shutting down the rest of the immune system.
4. Paris 2024 Olympics makes history with unprecedented full gender parity
In a historic move, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has distributed equal quotas for female and male athletes for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris 2024. It is the first time The Olympics will have full gender parity and is a significant milestone in the pursuit of equal representation and opportunities for women in sports.
Biased media coverage lead girls and boys to abandon sports.
5. Restored coral reefs can grow as fast as healthy reefs in just 4 years, new research shows
Planting new coral in degraded reefs can lead to rapid recovery – with restored reefs growing as fast as healthy reefs after just four years. Researchers studied these reefs to assess whether coral restoration can bring back the important ecosystem functions of a healthy reef.
“The speed of recovery we saw is incredible,” said lead author Dr Ines Lange, from the University of Exeter.
6. EU regulators pass the planet's first sweeping AI regulations
The EU is banning practices that it believes will threaten citizens' rights. "Biometric categorization systems based on sensitive characteristics" will be outlawed, as will the "untargeted scraping" of images of faces from CCTV footage and the web to create facial recognition databases.
Other applications that will be banned include social scoring; emotion recognition in schools and workplaces; and "AI that manipulates human behavior or exploits people’s vulnerabilities."
7. Global child deaths reach historic low in 2022 – UN report
The number of children who died before their fifth birthday has reached a historic low, dropping to 4.9 million in 2022.
The report reveals that more children are surviving today than ever before, with the global under-5 mortality rate declining by 51 per cent since 2000.

Rewatching Agents of SHIELD now that I’m out as trans and realizing “oh yeah, that’s why I identified with the Inhumans so much”. Especially when Daisy said “if a government gets their hands on a vaccine [for terrigenesis], it will never be a choice”. I also love Lincoln’s belief that every inhuman’s power is for a reason, I definitely vibe with that as a religious trans person.
Also I really like Lincoln, he’s a deliberate inversion of the “man who only gets better because of a girlfriend”. He never got better because of a girl, he got actual therapy and manages his issues without a girlfriend. I love the fact that people keep trying to tell Daisy “be careful with him”, “he’s got issues”, and “you can’t fix him” but he’s very obviously already fixed himself. It’s a shame he didn’t stick around after season 3. I don’t think he & Daisy would’ve worked out long term, but I love their dynamic.

If anyone hears about inverse vaccine trials for psoriasis, kindly drop me a line.
Hey Spider! I hope you & your family are doing well :D I have a quick question. I remember you reblogging something a while back about an inverse vaccine trial for celiac. I vaguely remember something about a similar trial for MS. Would you happen to know where to find more info about the MS trial? All I’ve been able to find are articles from September of 2023.
I'm sorry, I don't know. I've been keeping my eye out bc my best friend from HS has MS, and I'd love to get that info for her. If I find it, I'll post about it, and if you find it, please let me know?
