In conversation, an excerpt: Draco Malfoy on getting the Dark Mark.
Interviewed by: Luna Lovegood, The Quibbler
5th of June, 2003
Did you mean it?
ā€¢ I dont even remember doing it.
What do you remember?
ā€¢ Before. The dark. The dining room. Kneeling.
Then?
ā€¢ Pain. Worst Iā€™ve ever felt. Worse than a crucio.
How do you know wh-
ā€¢ Then they left me lying there.
And your mother?
ā€¢ I reckon she was wondering how the hell weā€™d gotten here.
Was he angry?
ā€¢ My father? No. No, he was something else entirely.
He left?
ā€¢ Yeah. There was a meeting to attend.
Oh. He didnā€™t make sure you were okay?
ā€¢ I wasnā€™t. Iā€™m not.
What was the last thing you remember seeing?
ā€¢ The chandelier. It looked like it was swaying but I think that was just me.
Do you remember seeing him do it?
ā€¢ Yeah. Someone was holding my head steady. Why does it matter?
What wand did he use?
ā€¢ My fathers.
Do you think you saw the wand and panicked?
ā€¢ Anything wouldā€™ve made me panic.
So maybe you didnā€™t want it. Maybe you were scared.
ā€¢ And? Scared isnā€™t an excuse. Neither is insecurity.
Neither of your parents stayed in the room?
ā€¢ No. They didnā€™t.
What else?
ā€¢ What? No I was scared. Maybe angry too. Maybe too scared to be angry in the moment.
You donā€™t think itā€™s okay to be angry at them? For what they did?
ā€¢ It doesnā€™t matter. The anger changes nothing.
Why does it change nothing?
ā€¢ Iā€™ve never seen it do anything good.
He was an angry man. Maybe your father was too.
ā€¢ My father wasnā€™t angry. He was scared and foolish. But that doesnā€™t make me good.
Why arenā€™t you good?
ā€¢ Thereā€™s bad in my blood.
Do you think youā€™re destined to hurt people?
ā€¢ I think what I did will always hurt people.
Do you think you hurt people because thatā€™s what your father did?
ā€¢ Does it count if I didnā€™t know what I was doing?
Maybe.
ā€¢ We looked alike. As children. Itā€™s difficult to imagine him as a bad person when we look the same. Something made him what he became. Iā€™m afraid it did the same to me.
What are you?
ā€¢ Tired. Sorry. Cowardly. Quiet. Like he made my mother.
What does that mean to you?
ā€¢ Huh- oh, I donā€™t know.
But how often do you think about it?
ā€¢ Everyday.
Were you thinking about this then? On that day?
ā€¢ Probably. I think I thought about everything and nothing in those few moments.
Tell me about that.
ā€¢ I said that. He used his wand. My fathers. He pointed it right between my eyes. I donā€™t - well. I was a child again. Like in that moment I was my father and he was me. Like we shared something deeper than resemblance.
It sounds like you started to feel like you were your father.
ā€¢ No. It was worse than that.
Worse?
ā€¢ His wand felt like it turned into his reflection standing opposite me. We look so alike. But that reflection wasnā€™t him, really. It was me. The anger was mine and fear was mine. And the pain was mine too. And. And when it happened. The only reason was me. And I- I-
Please take a moment. Take a deep breath.
ā€¢ Iā€™m so scared. That I canā€™t undo this. That Iā€™ll do it again.
Do what again?
ā€¢ Say yes because someone else told me too. Say yes because I look just like him.
I donā€™t think your father would want this for you.
ā€¢ He doesnā€™t want anything anymore.
Iā€™m sorry for your loss.
ā€¢ Iā€™m sat right here. He might be dead but Iā€™m still here. So heā€™s still here too.
So you think you deserve to die too?
ā€¢ Donā€™t I?
You were 15. But now you have the choice not to do it again.
ā€¢ Thatā€™s my point.
Elaborate.
ā€¢ I get to move past it all. I get to live. But all those good people? They had to die?
Whatā€™s in front of you?
ā€¢ What?
Is it more blood supremacy and death?
ā€¢ What? No. How could you even say that?
Iā€™m not saying that. Itā€™s isnā€™t happening yet. But you could still choose it.
ā€¢ Iā€™m tired of making choices.
Thatā€™s understandable. But thereā€™s not another one.
ā€¢ You just told me there was?
Blood supremacy and death?
ā€¢ No. Never. Not at all.
Youā€™re free now. You can tell the truth.
ā€¢ I am. Iā€™m telling the truth.
But it is okay because you were 15? Back then?
ā€¢ I didnā€™t know what I was believing in. I didnā€™t know how to separate a story and reality until too late.
What was it all for then?
ā€¢ I guess to make sure I never have to do it again.
Happy birthday Draco.
ā€¢ Funny. Thatā€™s what he said back then too.

ā€œHE WAS A TALL, SLENDER YOUNG MAN, WITH ashen hair and violet eyes. He wore a dirty gray sweatshirt and jeans, and in the icy wind whipping along Michigan Avenue at five o'clock, he was cold.
Daniel Molloy was his name. He was thirty-two, though he looked younger, a perennial student, not a man, that kind of youthful face. He murmured aloud to himself as he walked. " Ar-mand, I need you. Armand, that concert is tomorrow night. And something terrible is going to happen, something terribleā€¦ā€

Interview with the vampire/Harry Potter crossovers: Spontaneous scene
Draco Malfoy/Armand
The situation:
Draco and his mother got out of Malfoy manor after they mad a deal with the vampires. The other three vampires are feeding from strangers, but Armand was adamant about feeding directly from Draco.
Draco managed to take back the manor and kick out the death eaters after Lucius got into a tragic accident after they transferred him to Ascaban.
This scene takes place after Armand fed from Draco. It's not the first time. Draco is on the couch and he's sipping on the tea which was provided by Armand and the vampire put some calming draught and blood replenishing portions in the hot beverage.
The scene:
"I heard about what you said to Louis last week. When he went after you to the room where you gather intelligence about the dark side." Armand sad as he sat on the arm chair opposition of Draco. He watched as the boy drunk his tea and he didn't say anything more. I was obvious he was waiting for the boy to show his hand, to provide information without the need to ask for it. This was a game as much as any other between interaction them them before. Draco knew this. But Draco knew that he cannot win, so he did what he did nowadays
He just went with the flow. Without any consideration about the consequences, he didn't even thought about his words.
The scene:
"I heard about what you said to Louis last week. When he went after you to the room where you gather intelligence about the dark side." Armand sad as he sat on the armchair opposition of Draco. He watched as the boy drunk his tea and he didn't say anything more. It was obvious he was waiting for the boy to show his hand, to provide information without the need to ask for it. This was a game as much as any other interaction between them before. Draco knew this. But Draco knew that he cannot win, so he did what he did nowadays.
He just went with the flow. Without any consideration about the consequences, he didn't even thought about his words.
"Why did you feel the need to tell me this. If you haven't said anything I would have never known. It would have been a really big advantage in your game." Draco just looked at the vampire and he saw his death and his life in the other. The boy knew That the other being held his future in his hands. If Armand decided to destroy him, he could do nothing. The other could even manipulate him to believe it was his choice. Even though Draco was a Slytherin, the Vampire had centuries on him experience wise. Armand just rested his chin in his hand and looked a Draco. Just looked at him. Like he was a mystery to the other, and still Arman didn't say a word. He just looked he just watched he just observed. "You know if you don't say anything this won't be a conversation, this will be a monologue." The vampire just laughed.
"Oh darling how right you are. But I would like you to answer my question first and then I will decide if I answer yours. As you know after reading the book, once upon a time I was head of a theatre, so I'm always ready for a good monologue" Draco couldn't help himself he just smiled a bit. Of course the theatric vampire wanted him to be the one to take the first step. So he signed a bit and then went for it.
"You heard me talking about winning the game, I take it. And you heard me saying that I do not want to win the game. You know I really believe that I can not win against you and to tell you the truth I do not want to win against you. I don't even want to play against you. I am tired. I got my father out of the picture I got back the manner from the dark Lord. I managed to save my mother. I do not want for anything, i do not even want to live. I do not want to die I just do not feel the drive to live. There's no chance a 16-year-old boy can win against I don't even know how old vampire. So yes I do think that you can do anything you want to me or with me. I do not have the power or the energy or the mental capacity To fight you. And to tell the truth the honest To God truth, everything would be better than this emptiness. So actually you have already won in a sense." After Draco finished there wad silence. The boy picked up his mug again and drank his tea.
Draco could see that Armand was processing the things he heard. The boy could understand, after all after so many years where the man needed to manipulate to reach his goals, who needed to lie, who needed to bend others to his will without them knowing it to have what he wanted Draco could understand that the bare truth, the utter honesty was shocking and alien to the other.
Draco could almos see as Armand tried to see the hidden meaning the shadowy details which could mean the opposite to what's the words imply, but there was none. Draco foud the other's week spot: honesty. It was that easy that simple.
"So you say I could do anything I wanted with you. What would you say if I wanted you to tell me the things you need from me. What you're hoping from this whole situation. You let in 4 vampires to your house, you even provided us with a safe place during the daylight hours. You even let me fed on you, and you cover up the others meals. So tell me, if you're so honest, if you're so straightforward: what do you want from me?" Armand wasn't resting his chin on his palm anymore. He straightened up and give all his attention to the boy. Draco could see that the other was on edge.
" It's really is easy." Draco levitated a thin booklet to the vampire. Armand snatched itt out from the air and tentatively opened it. Draco could see as understanding drowned on the vampire about what he was holding in his hands. He could see as Armand's brown climb higher and higher as he swept a few pages in the book. Then he snapped the book closed suddenly and looked at a Draco disbelieveingly.
"Why would you give me rulebook about BDSM practice?! What's the meaning of this?!" And yes, there was the anger. It was in the tension in his shoulders. In the way he snarled at Draco. It was fascinating looking at this creature of violence and cruelty as it tried to stick to the thin skin of a human, with mortal boundaries and morals. It was this balancing act, that thin layer that restricted the monster beneath that was irresistible to Draco. The boy never had any illusion about himself and his desires. He wasn't mentally healthy, and his preferences reflected this. "Answer me! You said you won't play games, so don't!"
"I do not play games. Especially with this." Draco just pulled up his legs and rested his chinns on his knees. "As far as I can understand you're not incapable of love, the opposite actually. But you don't respect your partner boundaries, you want them for yourself totally and irrevocably. You want them to be loyal to you, and you want to be put first in every situation. You have love, you just don't have the tools to express it in a way that is acceptable for the other. So I tought I'll give you the tools, my boundaries, the starting point in how to love me. So I would not just accept it, but reveal in your love, your attention."
There was a pregnant pause, and Draco could see that Armand was more entertained than serious. It was ok, if the other wanted nothing more just to laugh at Draco, that was ok too. After all, Draco didn't expect it to work from the start. It was just one more thing he wanted to let go. But if he wanted to be satisfied, if he wanted to check this off his mental list, then he needed to do it to the fullest. So he continued.
"I know we don't love each other. We might never will. It's just something I wanted to give to you. Or anyone really, who might fit. I started composing the list at the end, when the first man forced himself on me. The list of my wants, my boundaries, my needs and my hopes, was curated trough the years. You could see them all... it was more of a child's attempt at selfsouthing than anything else." He gulped. He could see Armand was watching him with a speculating gaze. The vampire wasn't angry anymore. He was pensive. "You got yourself a relationship with misdirection and carefully placed and erased memories, but you sustained that relationship for more than seventy years. I didn't lie when I said I don't play games with you. You have total power here. You could destroy me and I wouldn't even know or just think it was all my idea. You could chain me to yourself until I forget who I was, and be content being the new me, you build up. You could kill me, or make me kill myself. I have no power here. And I'm ok with it. I don't really care anymore. I just really don't."
The next moment Armand was standing in front of him. The vampire touched his cheek with deadly gentleness. And Draco just leaned into the touch.
"And how do you think I would 'fit you'?" It was a dangerous question. But at the end it was what it boiled down to, Draco's deepest, dirtiest needs. The needs he himself tried to hide from. The needs, that made him a twisted, ugly little thing. He could barely utter the next words, as he closed his eyes, and concentrated on the deadly hand that touched him so utterly carefully.
"You would fit, because you're a monster, but a monster who guards his treasure jealousy. The treasure could wither away, if you hold it too tightly, too close, but it would bloom if you protected, nurtured it while you cradled it close to your chest." Draco opened his eyes and looked straight at Armand. Into those redish brown irises. "I really just want someone who will be with me, no matter what. And I think either you can be it, or it's worth it to give it a shot and be shattered"
There was a tense few seconds, and then Armand lowered his head and pressed his lips to Draco's forehead.
"You foolish, foolish little Dragon" and then there was no one in the room, just Draco and his shuddering breath. But when he opened his eyes, the book was missing from the table too.
End
It just got stuck in my mind and I couldn't concentrate until I got it out.
If someone wants to use this idea to write something a bit longer, or just another shor scene, please feel free to use or modify it to your taste.
I hope you enjoyed it, and if it prompted some ideas go ahead and have fun.

Tom Felton Discusses His Memoir "Beyond The Wand" And How This Collection Of Stories Was Inspired By Doing Comic Cons FP: I truly am so sorry to hear about Robbie's passing over this past weekend and wanted to just express my deepest sympathies to you and your cast mates. TF: I talk about it in the book, but he set the tone very fast. He sat next to Emma [at the table read], and he whispered in her ear before they started. So, I was like, "I'm Tom Felton, and I play Draco," and Emma Watson and Robbie obviously switched, so Emma was like, "Hi I'm Emma Watson, and I play Rubeus Hagrid" ā€” and you had Robbie Coltrane saying the opposite. That set the tone for how much fun we all were allowed to have on the films. So, I will always be very grateful for Robbie's influence. I know Ewan said in past interviews that his normal attire is an Adidas tracksuit so he just wants his stylist to show him what he looks good in and I'm???
We went from "freshly hatched to fame Ewan in suits of all different fits and sizes" to "Draco Malfoy was just reborn and now he wears the most interesting leather pieces" and now we're on "Welcome to my poetry workshop in this rustic coffee shop, we only drink black single origin dark roast because the fumes from the fresh grounds remind me of the scent of perfectly aged books that can only be found in the depths of a bookstore whose walls suffer with wood rot."
Excuse me???

Lily doesnā€™t seem to think sheā€™s done anything wrong by insulting his poverty and aligning herself with his abusers - only Severus is remorseful, and the trauma that caused him to lash out was considerably worse than the trauma that caused her to lash out. She believes he deserves it, as apparently she believed his abuse was amusing. And Iā€™d be totally fine with this from a character perspective because itā€™s the teenage condition to be self-centred and poor at self-reflection. But the *narrative* (and the author in interviews) doesnā€™t believe Lily was in the wrong here. And it believes Lily made the correct moral judgment on the two boys when she casts Severus off for his crime and falls in love with James despite his. But I just donā€™t buy into that framing, and I didnā€™t even when I was 10. The use of the word ā€˜mudbloodā€™ while in considerable distress is not a greater sin than sexual assault.
Lily feels no remorse, nor does she think it's wrong to half-smile at the bully whoā€™s targeting your so-called friend. She doesnā€™t even consider that this might be why your supposed best friend insulted you in the first place. But hereā€™s the thing: this isn't Lily's fault. It's J.K. Rowling's fault, and the way she portrays ethical dilemmas throughout the series, blurring the lines between what's morally right and wrong. Now, if youā€™ll allow me, before diving into the dynamics between Lily and Severus, Iā€™d like to provide some context as to why I believe the biggest issue with many of the charactersā€™ attitudes in the series lies in Rowlingā€™s constant attempt to project her own moral compass through her writing. In doing so, she falls into repeated inconsistencies and creates a narrative thatā€™s all over the place when it comes to how certain characters are treated.
Rowling is never consistent. She portrays Draco Malfoy as an irredeemable, terrible character because heā€™s a rich kid spoiled by his parents, using his power and influence to bully those weaker than him. Yet, she gives James the benefit of the doubt, even though he behaved exactly the same way: a rich bully who used his status and his friends to gang up on the vulnerable. From early interviews, Rowling claimed Pansy Parkinson is practically the reincarnation of Satan, even though, of all the antagonists, Pansy is probably one of the least relevant and harmless. This is simply because Rowling projected onto her the stereotypical ā€œmean girlsā€ who mock those who read and studyā€”something Rowling clearly couldnā€™t stand. On the other hand, she glorifies characters like Ginny, who has a pretty nasty attitude towards any girl she doesnā€™t consider cool or "not like the other girls." Ginny treats Fleur like a witch when Fleur has done nothing wrongā€”her only crime is being incredibly beautiful, knowing it, and not constantly apologizing for it. And this treatment of female characters throughout the series deserves a proper gendered critique, because they fall into every stereotype and archetype set by the traditional male gaze.
In Rowling's world, there are always two kinds of women. When it comes to younger, adolescent characters, there are the "good" womenā€”those who donā€™t fit the typical feminine mold, the weird ones (like Luna), the tomboys who are ā€œone of the guysā€ (like Ginny), or the overly studious ones who donā€™t have time for frivolous things like reading magazines or talking about boys (like Hermione). In other words, the cool girls, the ones who are supposed to be role models, are those who "arenā€™t like the other girls." But not because theyā€™re deconstructing gender roles consciouslyā€”they just happen to embody the fantasy of the woman who can give you kids while still being one of your bros. Itā€™s a common male fantasy, where women abandon the graceful, ethereal, delicate image to fit into a set of needs the modern man has. These are "manic pixie dream girls," hiding a deeply internalized misogyny as they are presented as individuals opposed to the ā€œotherā€ womenā€”the ā€œotherā€ being less cool because they lack traditionally masculine traits, and thus are less than. We see this not only with how Fleur is treated but also with the disdain or prejudice Hermione shows towards girls like Lavender or the Patil sisters, just because they act like normal teenagers instead of validating themselves through academia to compensate for their inferiority complex (cough, cough).
Then we have the adult female characters, where Rowlingā€™s toxic and incredibly conservative view of motherhood kicks in. Except for McGonagall, the rest of the adult women who are seen in a positive light are either already mothers or end up becoming mothers. And for them, motherhood is everything. They are mothers first and women second, in every case. Lily is Harryā€™s mother, who sacrifices herself for him. Molly is the Weasley matriarch, whose entire life revolves around her kidsā€”she hasnā€™t even looked for a job (which wouldnā€™t be a bad idea, considering the familyā€™s financial situation), nor does she have any aspirations beyond knitting sweaters and worrying about her children. Even Narcissa, a negative character throughout most of the saga, earns her redemption solely because she loves her son and is willing to risk everything for him. Nymphadora Tonks, a 25-year-old woman, ends up pregnant by a man 13 years older than her and goes from being an independent Auror with her own life to a passive housewife waiting for her man, who is off having an existential crisis. The adult women in the saga arenā€™t independent individualsā€”theyā€™re extensions of their children. And any woman who isnā€™t a perfect, self-sacrificing mother (like Merope Gaunt) is either a psychopath or portrayed as a terrible person.
What Iā€™m getting at is that Rowling is far from impartial in the moral narrative of the story. In fact, sheā€™s absolutely inconsistent. She presents characters she sells as "good," whose attitudes are absolute trash, yet she continues to insist that theyā€™re good and perfect. This is especially obvious with her female characters, because throughout the seven books, she constantly emphasizes her ideal of the "perfect woman" in terms of tastes, motivations, and behavior. Hermione is a self-insert, Ginny is probably a projection of who Rowling wishes she couldā€™ve been, and Luna is the quirky girl who isnā€™t ā€œthreateningā€ to other women, and is treated with a condescending, paternalistic lens. They are either Rowlingā€™s aspirational figures or archetypes that donā€™t bother her, or theyā€™re reduced to filler characters who are mistreated by the narrative.
When it comes to Lily, the problem is that Rowling spends half the saga painting her as some kind of Mother Teresa. Sheā€™s the quintessence of motherhoodā€”but not a conscious, modern motherhood, but one rooted in traditional Judeo-Christian ideals. This is the kind of motherhood that can do no wrong, the one that represents women because, in this view, a woman canā€™t be fulfilled unless sheā€™s a mother. Lily dies for her son, and that love creates a divine, protective magic. Sheā€™s beautiful, popular, and one of the most popular guys at school is after her. Clearly, she must be a saint, because everyone describes her as such. And while the narrative does question Jamesā€™s perfection, even if vaguely and unsuccessfully, it doesnā€™t do the same with Lily. Harry questions his fatherā€™s actions but never his motherā€™s. He never stops to think about how problematic it is that his mother almost laughed at Severus or refused to hear his apology, or that she couldnā€™t empathize with what he was going through, knowing full well the kind of situation Severus had at home. When a narrative tells you something but never shows it, and worse, never questions it, thatā€™s a problem. Something doesnā€™t add up. Rowling is obsessed with showing her own moral line through her characters and doesnā€™t realize how incoherent it is to portray Lily as someone who always does the right thing when what we actually see of her suggests that, if she really liked James all along, not only is she a hypocrite, but sheā€™s also quite superficial with questionable principles. But this is never addressed, never explored. It would be fascinating if it were, giving the character more depth and making her more relatable. But Rowling brushes all this aside, as she does with so many other things, because to her, Lily was a role model, despite the fact that anyone with common sense can see she was just a terrible friend who got tired of justifying why she hung out with a poor, scruffy kid and ultimately decided it made more sense to date the rich, handsome bully.

what's the one harry potter pairing u like that u mentioned in the tags of your hinny post?
Anonymous: Can I ask who that minor character you ship with Harry is? For some absurd reason my mind jumped to Stan Shunpike lol but it's probably not him.... Or is it?
Okay, so this is kind of a funny story. Like, my pipeline through hp pairings was a weird one. Like, I used to read a lot of Harry pairings, still do on occasion (some make more sense than others). None of them were ones I would point at and say: "that should've happened in the books"
One day, I was innocently writing a fic (canon divergence of GoF), and it was just for me, for funnsies, never posted it anywhere and not planning to. And I planned to pair Harry with someone there (honestly, I don't remember who because I didn't write the plan down) but when writing, Harry ended up with a different character. And it was so strange to me because that never happened.
Like, how do you write a ship accidentally?
But I did. I wrote Harry into a ship by accident. So I went back to the books to try and figure out why the hell would my subconscious decide that's the way to go.
I'll also preface it by all this being my subjective opinion and I do read other Harry ships in fics, this one just quickly became my favorite to write (and the only one I write). Also, I don't actually think this is a pairing that should've happened in the books, it's place is in fic and that's where I like it.
So, the character I accidentally shipped with Harry is... *drumroll*
Stan Shunpike!
Not really, it's:
Theodore Nott
Now, you might look at the name and go: "Who the fuck is that?"
And you'll be correct. Theo has 0 speaking lines in the entire book series. His name appears twice. He, himself, as a person, only appeared on page, like, 3 times in the background. The scene that gives the most information about him is other characters talking about him. He isn't even present.
That being said, I'm very good at extrapolating a lot of information from very little evidence. So allow me, to walk you through who is Theodore Nott and why I ship him with Harry.
Basic Information
So, let's start with the most basic overview before I pull out the quotes and go any deeper.
We know Theo is a Slytherin student in Harry's year. So he likely shares a dorm with Draco, Blaise, Crabbe, and Goyle.
Theo's father is both at the graveyard at the end of GoF and in the Department of Mysteries at the end of OotP, so we know he is a Death Eater. We also know Thoe's father was one of the first and closest Death Eaters to Voldemort, who waited for him during his interview with Dumbledore in 1967:
ā€œThen if I were to go to the Hogā€™s Head tonight, I would not find a group of them ā€” Nott, Rosier, Mulciber, Dolohov ā€” awaiting your return? Devoted friends indeed...ā€
(HBP, page 444)
We also know the Nott family is "as pure-blooded as the Malfoys" according to JKR in an interview. We also know Theo's great-grandfather (maybe? the family relation isn't clear), Cantankerus Nott, is suspected to be the one who wrote the Pure-Blood Dictionary, the book that coined the term "Sacred 28" and made that list (which the Nott family are on).
The name Nott is potentially to be derived from the nameĀ NĆ³tt, which is the personification of the night in Norse Mythology. So it has been theorized the Nott family have a Nordic origin. Possible, but it doesn't really matter for this post.
What does, is that he comes from a dark, Death Eater, blood-purist family similar to the Malfoys. Even so, Theo never took the Dark Mark and never joined Voldemort in the books.
Now, that we have the basic information out of the way, let's look at Theodore as a person.
All the details I could gather from the books
Alright, now we get to the fun part. That is, me going through all the relevant scenes that mention Theodore Nott and actually creating a character psychoanalysis out of basically nothing.
So, the quotes aren't organized in a particular order. I'm just going to explain Theo and then explain why all this makes me ship him with Harry.
ā€œWell, I pity Slughornā€™s taste. Maybe heā€™s going a bit senile. Shame, my father always said he was a good wizard in his day. My father used to be a bit of a favorite of his. Slughorn probably hasnā€™t heard Iā€™m on the train, or ā€”ā€ ā€œI wouldnā€™t bank on an invitation,ā€ said Zabini. ā€œHe asked me about Nottā€™s father when I first arrived. They used to be old friends, apparently, but when he heard heā€™d been caught at the Ministry he didnā€™t look happy, and Nott didnā€™t get an invitation, did he? I donā€™t think Slughornā€™s interested in Death Eaters.ā€ Malfoy looked angry, but forced out a singularly humorless laugh.
(HBP, page 150)
This is a part of the conversation between Draco, Pansy, and Blaise, Harry overhears when he is hiding in their compartment at the beginning of HBP. I have a few things to note regarding this scene.
Firstly, throughout this conversation, Pansy, Blaise, and Draco all call each other by their first name. This shows closeness, they are all friendly and familiar enough to use their first names with each other. Theo, though, is referred to as "Nott" by all three in the compartment.
He doesn't actually sit in their compartment which is in itself a sign about how he isn't really friendly with Draco's group. Considering the group is most of his year from his house, Theo is likely very lonely, and it will be apparent from other scenes I bring up later.
Secondly, Theo's father is in Azkaban. We know Draco is bothered about his own father's predicament. He mentions it to Harry and bothers him over it, Theo doesn't though. Theo doesn't seem to be bothered by Harry or his father's incarceration.
The only conclusion I can draw from this is that the relationship between Theo and his father is not a good one.
(I know some fics like to have Lucius be abusive towards Draco, for some reason. But the books really don't back this up. Lucius loves Draco and Draco adores his father)
Theo, though, Theo seems to be the one with a very strained relationship with his father. Strained enough that he isn't bothered the man is in Azkaban. What I'm saying is that Theo's father likely abuses or mistreats him in some capacity.
If anything more was needed to complete Harryā€™s happiness, it was Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyleā€™s reactions. He saw them with their heads together later that afternoon in the library, together with a weedy-looking boy Hermione whispered was called Theodore Nott. They looked around at Harry as he browsed the shelves for the book he needed on Partial Vanishment, and Goyle cracked his knuckles threateningly and Malfoy whispered something undoubtedly malevolent to Crabbe. Harry knew perfectly well why they were acting like this: He had named all of their fathers as Death Eaters
(OotP, page 583)
This is a scene at the end of OotP after Draco, Crabbe, Goyle and Theo's fathers were caught at the ministry and sent to Azkaban because they are Death Eaters. There are a few important notes about this scene.
The first, Hermione knows Theo, while Harry and Ron don't really. This means she likely knows him from the classes she takes and Harry and Ron don't ā€” Arithmancy and/or Ancient Runes.
The second, he is sitting with other Death Eater children, but I don't think it's by choice. I mentioned in the previous quote how he isn't close to Draco and his crew. He sits with them here mostly because he doesn't have another choice. Theo doesn't seem to really have any friends, so he sits with the closest people he has to friends ā€” kids he has known since he was young because their fathers were in the same circle.
The other note about this is that Crabbe, Goyle, and Draco are all mentioned as being threatening and malicious towards Harry because they don't like that their fathers are in Azkaban. Theo, though, Theo doesn't threaten Harry, he isn't part of their whisperings. As I mentioned above, he's likely happy his father is in Azkaban.
A pair of blank, white, shining eyes were growing larger through the gloom and a moment later the dragonish face, neck, and then skeletal body of a great, black, winged horse emerged from the darkness. It looked around at the class for a few seconds, swishing its long black tail, then bowed its head and began to tear flesh from the dead cow with its pointed fangs. A great wave of relief broke over Harry. Here at last was proof that he had not imagined these creatures, that they were real: Hagrid knew about them too. He looked eagerly at Ron, but Ron was still staring around into the trees and after a few seconds he whispered, ā€œWhy doesnā€™t Hagrid call again?ā€ Most of the rest of the class were wearing expressions as confused and nervously expectant as Ronā€™s and were still gazing everywhere but at the horse standing feet from them. There were only two other people who seemed to be able to see them: a stringy Slytherin boy standing just behind Goyle was watching the horse eating with an expression of great distaste on his face, and Neville, whose eyes were following the swishing progress of the long black tail.
(OotP, page 445)
ā€œThe only people who can see thestrals,ā€ she said, ā€œare people who have seen death.ā€
(OotP, page 446)
The stringy Slytherin boy mentioned here is Theo. This scene proves that:
He takes Care of Magical Creatures
He saw someone die
Let's explore the second one for a moment. The fact Theo can see Thestrals means he watched someone die and was old enough to comprehend what he was seeing. We also know Theo's mother is dead. So it's likely the person he watched die was his mother.
I also want to draw attention to Theo's distaste towards Thestrals. He could likely see them carrying the carriages every year since 2nd year, it's not his first time seeing them. But it doesn't stop his displeasure with their sight from showing. Which says something about him. It means he likely recalls his mother and her death whenever he looks at the Thestrals. and these are memories Theo rather not experience.
We don't know how his mother died, but I'd hazard a guess it wasn't natural. After all, wizards have long life spans, they are more durable to illness and injury, and don't usually die from accidents unless very extreme or magical. And there was no epidemic of dragonpox (a disease that does tend to kill wizards) in the time since 1980 and the books. So, she was more likely killed at some point between 1985(ish) and 1991.
ā€œNo, I donā€™t think so, sir. Iā€™m Muggle-born, you see.ā€ Harry saw Malfoy lean close to Nott and whisper something; both of them sniggered, but Slughorn showed no dismay; on the contrary, he beamed and looked from Hermione to Harry, who was sitting next to her.
(HBP, pages 185-186)
First, Theo is an O student in potions since he is in the potions NEWT class, and was probably meant to be there even if Snape was the teacher.
Second, again, Theo doesn't really have friends. He sits next to Draco as the only other Slytherin in the class. Also, they share the circumstances of being sons of Death Eaters currently in Azkaban. Although both of them seem to deal with it quite differently.
Third, Theo joins Draco in making fun of Hermione's blood status, but he does not initiate it. Considering the environment he was raised in and is in, it makes sense he would make fun of it. Whether he's a blood-purist or not, he would want to keep his image considering he doesn't have many allies. Hanging out with Draco is survival, not friendship. They aren't even on a first-name basis with each other.
ā€œAmortentia doesnā€™t really create love, of course. It is impossible to manufacture or imitate love. No, this will simply cause a powerful infatuation or obsession. It is probably the most dangerous and powerful potion in this room ā€” oh yes,ā€ he said, nodding gravely at Malfoy and Nott, both of whom were smirking skeptically. ā€œWhen you have seen as much of life as I have, you will not underestimate the power of obsessive love. . . .
(HBP, page 186)
The final quote I have about Theo is from the same potions class as above. Both he and Draco are portrayed here as underestimating amortentia and its potential damage. It makes sense for their upbringing in the Wizarding World, which has no real laws or regulations regarding love potions that are seen as harmless fun more often than not.
I'll add Theo likely didn't witness a healthy romantic relationship. Considering his father is a Death Eater who is likely abusive and may or may not have killed his mother. With this as his reference to a marriage, it's clear why he'd look down on love and love potions.
Why I think Theo and Harry have potential
Okay, so now that we know who Theodore Nott is, let's talk about why I ship him with Harry.
I think Harry, in general, would get along best with a clever partner with the ability to be ruthless (Slytherins or Ron fall into this category). Because Harry isn't some golden savior; he casts unforgivables, and is very willing to poison Umbridge or Crocio Snape if he could get away with it. He needs a partner that won't be horrified by these thoughts.
Also, Theo literally never speaks on page. Even when spoken to, his reactions are silent. I think this quiet and no need to talk, the ability to be comfortable in silence, is something that would be comfortable for Harry. Harry in the books finds himself annoyed with Ron and Hermione's constant banter on occasion, so I think it fits well.
Theo would also be comfortable around Harry without a need to play a certain part. Because Harry wouldn't care about that. He would honestly rather Theo forgo the pure-blood Slytherin act.
I feel like Harry and Theo, have a good potential to understand each other. Theo lost his mother and likely experiences abuse from his father. It makes them very likely to trauma bond over their crap life and shared experience. Two out of three only ones who could see the Thestrals in the entire class.
The other thing I feel they could connect over is being lonely. Harry spent all his childhood until Hogwarts basically being on his own. Theo stayed on his own. Draco at least has his parents, he has other students he's closer to, not that he shares everything with them, but he has some support network. Theo has none. And this is something Harry knows well.
Theo, I think, wouldn't expect anything specific from Harry. He doesn't even interact with him, not to mock him, and not to idolize him, he doesn't care at all. And we know how much Harry appreciates being thought of as Harry and not as the Boy-Who-Lived. Theo would allow Harry to be himself without some mold he wants him to fit in.
The fact Theo never becomes a Death Eater, even though he was in Draco's year and his father was a Death Eater before Lucius (and in better standing than Lucius with Voldemort) is so interesting. It's somewhat surprising Theo wasn't marked. It means he didn't want to be. It means that Theo Nott didn't want to torture and kill muggleborns or blood traitors, or anyone really. And he didn't want to swear his allegiance to Voldemort. This is just a fascinating fact to me and something I enjoy considering. What life experience made him come to that conclusion? Was it just his dislike of his father that pushed him away? Could he have been another Sirius Black (Gryffindor in a Slytherin family) under slightly different circumstances? I mean, Voldemort likely wouldn't force him to become a Death Eater, but would his father? I don't know what at all went down there, but I like that potential story.
We also know he wasn't part of Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad, even though some minor Slytherins were mentioned to be part of it. He just seems to be an actually decent guy (I don't care what Cursed Child says about him, I know he's there but I avoided almost anything to do with Cursed Child so I barely know the plot).
Finally, this is a character Harry doesn't have as much drama to get over with. Yes, sometimes I want to read overcoming drama between characters before it becomes a romance, but sometimes I want something chiller than that. And Theo is a really chill, safe, Slytherin option for Harry.

Note
And now for a HP fandom question - do you have any thoughts on queercoding in the series and if JKR ever actually intended it, and then backtracked, or if it was always completely unintentional? I'm thinking specifically about Lupin and Tonks (as individuals, not as a ship) Inspired by your post about the intention vs how fans perceived Draco Malfoy. Thanks!
So the first thing I want to do is make a distinction between femme-coding and queer-coding. They're tropes with very similar histories, and a lot of works treat them as the same thing. But Harry Potter doesnā€™t, and I think we can chalk this one up to JK Rowlingā€™s habit of grabbing aesthetics and visuals without really thinking through the history behind them.Ā
(Like - the goblins. She says she didnā€™t mean to write an antisemitic thing, and I actually do believe her. But did she use a lot of tropes and images with a long history of being tied to antisemitism? yes.)
So when I say ā€œfemmeā€ I mean giving a male character traits stereotypically associated with femininity. Heightened sensitivity/emotionality, an interest in hair, clothes and being attractive, a love of lace/pink/frills, a dislike of violence and physical confrontation, and a preference for the soft power of manipulation, character assassination and poison - versus the hard power of direct confrontation and physical prowess. Are these things super stereotypical? Yes. But theyā€™re ALSO traits you see all the time on male villains, especially ones that you donā€™t want to seem that threatening. Femme-coded villains show up a lot in childrenā€™s media, or as the Big Badā€™s #2. Theyā€™re not meant to be heroic or sympathetic (since all these feminine traits are not desirable, especially for guys.) But they also arenā€™t scary, and you can pretty much always play them for comedy.Ā
For example: see almost every male Disney villain. And JKR was writing childrenā€™s literature in the 90s, so of course sheā€™s pulling from the same zeitgeist as the Disney Renaissance.Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
JKR loves herself a femme villain. The absolute gold standard is of course Lockhart - who wears pink, wants to start his own line of hair care products, is self-centered, vain, obsessed with popularityā€¦ but he sucks in a fight. His entire MO involves manipulating people into thinking he has these traditional masculine qualities when he just doesnā€™t. But thereā€™s also fussy, prissy Percy wearing his prefect badge on his pajamas. Bitchy, emotional mean-girl poisoners Draco and Snape (especially early book Snape - which is Snape at his most villainous.) Draco, Percy and Snape are also unusual for being male characters who we see crying for reasons other than grief (apparently the only truly acceptable reason for masculine crying).Ā
Lucius Malfoy is an interesting case because he starts off quite masc. Heā€™s threatening to curse people, the governors are scared of him, etc. But, as the books go onā€¦ and he gets less powerfulā€¦ he also gets more femme. When we meet him in Book 5 heā€™s no longer threatening people, but bribing them, spreading rumors, and giving interviews to the Prophet casting Arthur Weasley in a negative light. He's also getting really into peacocks. In Book 2 he was a major threat, but as he gets recast as Voldemortā€™s #2 he becomes a more femme, soft-power villain. When he leads the attack on the Department of Mysteries, he absolutely bungles it, which defines his character (and relationship with Voldemort) for the rest of the series. And it makes sense that Lucius is given this kind of treatment! Itā€™s a way of communicating that there's a new villain in town, a real villain.Ā
So, are any of these femme-coded villains additionally queer-coded? Iā€™m actually going to say no. Queer-coding is (like it says on the tin) finding ways to imply that your character is specifically gay. Like maybe giving them a same-sex relationship that is written romantically, but not explicitly called out by the text. Or pairing up all of the characters except them. Maybe have other characters joke about them being gay, and use that as a way to talk about the subject with some plausible deniability. Or they could just play suggestively with a cigar, or a walking stick. There are different strategies.Ā Ā
But Lockhart doesn't get any of that. Honestly, I think that if JKR actually thought of him as gay, she would have been a lot more wary about a scene where he keeps Harry alone with him in his office for way longer than heā€™s supposed to. And she might have skipped this joke:Ā
ā€œHarry was hauled to the front of the class during their very next Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, this time acting a werewolf (...) ā€œNice loud howl, Harry ā€” exactly ā€” and then, if youā€™ll believe it, I pounced ā€” like this ā€” slammed him to the floor ā€” thus ā€” with one hand, I managed to hold him down ā€” with my other, I put my wand to his throat (...) he let out a piteous moan ā€” go on, Harry ā€” higher than that ā€” good ā€”ā€Ā
Like. At least she would have picked a different word than ā€œmoan,ā€ right? Which unfortunately has slightly sexual connotations. Especially if she wanted to keep Lockhart a buffoon, to properly set up the twist at the end.Ā
Slughorn also gets femme-coded in a similar way: he loves his candy, his parties, his smoking jackets, his lilac silk pajamas, his web of connections he can use to get stuff (Lucius style.) We are introduced to him squatting in specifically a ā€œfussy old ladyā€™sā€ house. Heā€™s also unusually emotional, getting weepy at Aragogā€˜s funeral. But I donā€™t think weā€™re meant to read him as actually gay, or else his relationship with Tom Riddle mightā€™ve read a little too close to Tom seducing/trying to seduce him. Which is a beat JKR does subtly play out with Hepzibah Smith, but idk. by that point at least Tom is a legal adult.
(As a side note - the Harry Potter series got so lucky that all of its adult characters are played by absolutely top-shelf actors who are aware of the connotations and history behind various symbols, and do consider these things in their performances. Kenneth Brannagh and Jim Broadbent are good enough to make sure thereā€™s not even a hint of iffy subtext when they play Lockhart and Slughorn. Also, Emma Thompson took the potentially very problematic character of Trelawney and made her cute and sympatheticā€¦ and not Romani in the slightest.)Ā
Tumblr media
Draco, Snape, and Percy all have a case of the not-gays. Percy has a girlfriend (we donā€™t really see her or anything, but weā€™re told sheā€™s there.) Snape of course gets his whole thing with Lily, and Dracoā€¦ after one too many beats where itā€™s clear that Pansy is into him, but heā€™s not into Pansyā€¦Ā  gets a scene where heā€™s talking to his buddies with his head in her lap. (JKR uses ā€œno oneā€˜s good enough for meā€ beats with Blaise, Draco and Sirius, and the idea there seems to be more that they have undeservedly high opinions of themselves, and less that they donā€™t like girls.)
But, I do agree that a lot of JKR's characters do come across as a little more queer than intended. It boils down, I think, to the general lack of any kind of romance in the Harry Potter books and JKR being generally bad at/uncomfortable with writing male attraction directed at women, BUT being perfectly happy writing attraction directed at pretty guys. And because of thatā€¦ yeah, it can sometimes feel like maybe Harry has a thing for Cedric. Especially when Dudley goes on to tease him about Cedric being his boyfriend, which I believe is the only actual mention of gay people in the entire series.Ā Ā
So is there any intentional queer-coding in the book? Itā€™s really subtle, but yes. I think Dumbledore is queer-coded. He is unusually emotional/cries unusually often for a Rowling guy. He is also given a scene which emphasizes his ā€œflamboyantlyā€ cut plum-velvet suit, and his relationship with Grindelwald is implied to be romantic for one book and two movies before being actually confirmed in Fantastic Beasts 3. (With the line of dialogue ā€œI was in love with you.ā€ Big step up from ā€œWe were closer than brothers.ā€ which is an odd thing to say about someone you are interested in romantically.)Ā
But you brought up Tonks and Lupin, two characters very commonly interpreted as queer. So letā€™s get into that. JKR has said that she considers Lupinā€™s lycanthropy to be a metaphor for stigmatized diseases like AIDS. Andā€¦ as incredible as it is to sayā€¦ I actually do not think that she made the jump from there to thinking that maybe the character suffering from AIDS should be gay.
Because the narrative places so much weight on Lupin being bitten young and then on maybe not being allowed to attend school, Iā€™m pretty sure that heā€™s not intended to be queer so much as heā€™s meant to be Ryan White, the literal poster child for AIDS activism who got infected via blood transfusion when he was two. Tragic, absolutely. But not gay. Honestly, I hope JKR was thinking of ā€˜lycanthropyā€™ as a metaphor for stigmatized illness in the abstract and not as a comment on gay people specifically. Because otherwise, Greybackā€™s thing about biting children becomes a mash-up of two of the biggest homophobic boogeymen from the 80s: gay men infecting people with AIDS on purpose becauseā€¦ idk, they hate the world or something. And the influence of gay men somehow ā€œturningā€ children gay. Both absolutely real, if ridiculous, moral panics.
On top of that, Remus and Sirius do get a pretty clear case of the not-gays early on (ā€œHe embraced Black like a brother.ā€) Buuuut Alfonso CuarĆ³n did think through those implications for Movie 3, absolutely saw Lupin as gay, and directed David Thewlis to play him accordingly. No reports confirming or denying whether Alfonso CuarĆ³n ships Wolfstar, but I think that if Iā€™m an actor trying to make sense of Lupinā€™s motivationsā€¦ and I know he didnā€™t show Dumbledore the Maraudersā€™ Map and didnā€™t tell anyone Sirius was an animagusā€¦ and then Iā€™m told my character is gayā€¦ well. Anyway, I think there are absolutely hints of Wolfstar in that performance.Ā
And there's Tonks. Tonks is introduced during a very spooky segment in Book 5: Harry has been going through it, been left alone at the Dursleys while having what sounds like a depressive episode. Itā€™s dark, he hears intruders. It's a really good piece of writing. But JKR knows that itā€™s the good guys who are coming and thinks, okay. Letā€™s make that as clear as possible from the word go. And so the first thing Harry sees is Tonks' pink hair. And what kind of person has pink hair? A young adult. A punky young adult. And what power would a teenager think was cool? Well, the ability to change the color of their hair at will. That, by itself, would have worked perfectly fine for this character.
But then (for reasons best known to herself) JKR goes further. Even though Tonkā€™s hair changing color is easily 90% of the transformations we see and there is no plot reason her appearance needs to change more than that, we see her drastically change her age and body type. When you think about this power for more than five seconds, it becomes kind of OP. For worldbuilding reasons alone, my instinct wouldā€™ve been to tone it down a bit.Ā
But no, we have this counterculture character who seems interested in her career and not in a relationship, who can easily change anything about her body, and (if her ability works anything like Polyjuice) that means she should definitely be able to change her gender. Cool.
Then, in everyoneā€™s least favorite romance, Tonks and Lupin are paired up. I have heard the argument that this was meant to walk back queer-coding, or to punish people who thought they were queer... but I donā€™t think thatā€™s the case. I donā€™t think JKR expected these two to be fan favorites, and then was kind of surprised when everyone wanted to hear about their continuing adventures.Ā
(There are a handful of characters who JKR clearly really enjoys - and really enjoys writing - that fandom honestly could not care less about. Mundungus Fletcher and Ludo Bagman spring to mind. But the reverse is also true. She had one story for Lupin and people wanted to see more. Tonks is probably supposed to be her comment on immature young adults: she is loud, in your face, causes mild destruction and is ā€œa little annoying at times.ā€ But the fans fell in love with her.)Ā
So JKR has these two fan favorite characters and nothing for them to do. A romance is something for them to do. JKR also has a kind of weird pattern where good people need to either have kids or take care of kids. Itā€™s not good to be a woman who isnā€™t involved with taking care of children in some fashion: see Rita Skeeter, Dolores Umbridge, Bellatrix Lestrange. This is also (I think) why Harry names his kids specifically after Severus, Sirius, and Albus. Since theyā€™re good men, JKR had to find a way to give them kids after the fact.Ā
So yeah. I think we were meant to read Tonks and Lupin having a kid as kind of a reward, or at least as proof of their intrinsic goodness. There also just isnā€™t another guy in the right age range to ship Tonks with. The only other option is Sirius.Ā
(Harry in the books and Lupin on Pottermore both suspect that Tonks/Sirius is a thing. Completely forgetting, I guess, that they're cousins.)

Headmaster!Draco Malfoy x herbology professor!reader
Summary: More than a decade after the battle at Hogwarts, where Harry Potter saw to the end of the worldā€™s most feared Wizard, Voldemort, the wizarding world has moved forward in relative peace.
Just like in the seats of the Ministry of Magic, the staff of Hogwarts has a seen change in staff over the last 12 or so years as the younger generation of Witches and Wizards take their places. The most notable being when Harry Potter himself returned after 5 years of traveling to take over as the permanent Defense against the Dark Arts teacher.
Like Harry, youā€™ve spent your years after graduation traveling and studying herbology. Your studies have made you a household name in wizarding Britain, but your most recent discoveries have your name starting to spread across the world.
Despite this, you were still surprised to receive such an invitation to interview as the new Herbology Professor after Sprouts retirement. As enticing as the offer sounds, are you truly ready for the way your life is about to change forever?

Fanfiction prompt
A Harry Potter x Interview with a vampire (series) crossover. Louis/Lestat, Draco Malfoy/Armand
What would happen if Voldemort captured our favourite vampires (Lestat, Louis, Armand and Daniel), and held them captive in The Malfoy dungeons. In a desperate attempt to save his mother and himself from being branded Draco makes a deal with them. If they help him get out of the manor, over the apparition wards, he'll help them escape. The vampires agree, and they escape together to an earlier prepared safe house...
This whole thing would happen after the interview and after Louis gets back together with Lestat because of Daniel's revelation about the trial, and Armand and Lestat part in that. At least in my head, but you know just go with the flow if you got inspired. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø
(I played with the idea, that if Draco gets turned he would still have his magic, with an ancient ritual, but it was just an idea.)
I hope I sparkes someone's interested, and if you decide to write something along these lines I would be super happy to read it.

And now here I was with his court case on my kitchen table after I thought I would never have to see his name again. Last I heard he left with his family and was in Paris. But this case was something the Prophet didnā€™t have their hands on.Ā No one knew Draco was on trial for murder.
Draco wasnā€™t in Azkaban like I had thought. He was wandless and living at his familyā€™s manor under house arrest. I had half a thought to take the trip out to the manor. Surely, I could contact someone who knew where it was.Ā
I sent a few owls out. Whether I could work this case or not was still a mystery to me, but if I showed up empty handed on Tuesday, Iā€™d be screwed either way. I had to work this case like I didnā€™t know. Like it didnā€™t matter. Like everything was fine.
Hermione answered me first. She had more questions than I did but she knew the laws better than me: there was a possibility that I could legally work this case. She also had the address for the manor. Wiltshire. It wasnā€™t far from my little town. It wouldnā€™t make a hard trip.Ā
If Draco wanted to see me was another matter entirely. My heart sank in my chest. If he didnā€™t cooperate I could lose everything. And Draco wasnā€™t the cooperative type.Ā
Somewhere fate had to be laughing at me.Ā
I dreaded 4pm on Tuesday.
But I knocked on the office door anyway.
ā€œCome in,ā€Ā
I took a deep breath, my anxiety caught in my throat. I didnā€™t know what would come of this meeting. There was still a chance that I couldnā€™t work on this case because I was a witness in it, but if this was the only way to pass my exams then I didnā€™t know what else I could do.Ā
ā€œDr. Dresden, there seems to be a problem with this case,ā€ I said, taking a seat.Ā
ā€œIā€™m aware.ā€Ā
ā€œItā€™s not what you think,ā€ My palms began to sweat. ā€œProfessor I canā€™t work this case.ā€Ā
ā€œSo you wish to fail.ā€Ā
ā€œNo! No! Please, no,ā€ I shook my head. ā€œI canā€™t work on this case because I know who this case is about.ā€Ā
ā€œAnd that makes you incapable?ā€Ā
ā€œWhat? No,ā€ I struggled for words but Dr. Dresden pressed on.Ā
ā€œMiss Y/l/n you are aware of my rules. If you do not work this case to closing, you will fail and you will not become a public defender. Now, Iā€™m sorry that you know these people, but did you think this job did not entail defending people you once knew?ā€Ā
ā€œNo sir,ā€ My face became solemn. ā€œSir I have a witness statement in this case.ā€Ā
ā€œI am aware.ā€Ā
ā€œBut you gave me this case.ā€Ā
ā€œMiss Y/l/n if you are going to waste my time stating the obvious, perhaps I should fail you now.ā€Ā
ā€œNo, please.ā€ I begged. So this is how we were doing this. I squared my shoulders and pressed on. ā€œOkay. Iā€™ve contacted the other witnesses and have set up a few interviews and I also have the address for Malfoy Manor. Iā€™ll visit next week.ā€Ā
ā€œI see. And what do you make of the case?ā€
ā€œThereā€™s got to be something missing. If Malfoy says he killed Dumbledore but his wand doesnā€™t there has to be something else going on,ā€ I said flipping through my notes. ā€œThere are also a few witnesses who say they donā€™t believe Malfoy is capable of murder.ā€Ā
ā€œAnd what do you make of that?ā€
ā€œI donā€™t know yet. I need to talk to Malfoy.ā€Ā
ā€œThen it seems like weā€™re finished for today. I will see you next week,ā€
ā€œYes professor. Thank you,ā€ I bowed my head and left his office, now making solid plans.Ā
I was going to acquit Draco Malfoy.Ā
Or figure out if he really was capable of murder.Ā
The next day I was on the manor steps wondering if this was worth it. I had went over it a thousand times: not the a first appearance, then plea day, then pre-trial conference notes. No no, there had to have been a million different ways that I phrased saying hello to him; explaining what I was doing; begging for him to help me; and maybe a few where I moved across the world and never looked at him or this stupid case again. Those ones were a little fun to imagine.Ā
It was chilly in Wiltshire and a mist hung in the air around the magnificent house. It was as if the air and house itself were hiding secrets that not even a stray sunbeam could find.Ā
The door opened and though it had been years since I had since him, Draco Malfoy stood in front of me, his gaze just as pensive and guarded. I opened my mouth to introduce myself but he beat me to it.Ā
ā€œY/n?ā€Ā
ā€œYou know my name?ā€ In every single conversation I had dreamed of, not one of them did I ever imagine him knowing my name.Ā
ā€œWe sat next to each other in potions for four years.ā€ He said plainly. ā€œWhat are you doing here?ā€ He tilted his head, an amused smirk on his lips.Ā
I inhaled sharply. ā€œI was assigned your case. Iā€™m your new defense attorney.ā€Ā
He snorted and rolled his eyes. ā€œYeah okay, no really, why are you here?ā€ He didnā€™t believe me.Ā
ā€œIā€™m telling you the truth, I was assigned your case.ā€ I pulled the official letter from my bag. ā€œFrom Dr. Dresden himself,ā€Ā
ā€œSo youā€™re the one he chose,ā€ Draco said, plucking the letter from my hands.Ā
ā€œWhat?ā€Ā
ā€œHe told me he had a promising student who might be able to acquit meā€”or finally put me out of my misery.ā€ Draco shrugged and handed the letter back to me.Ā
ā€œOh.ā€ I didnā€™t know I was personally chosen for this case. It made me wonder how many strings were pulled for this and if fate really was laughing somewhere.Ā
ā€œWell, Iā€™m sorry to waste your time, but Iā€™m not interested in closing the case,ā€ He shrugged.Ā
See, now that I did expect.Ā
ā€œI need to close this case.ā€ I said firmly.Ā
ā€œIā€™m sorry, but no,ā€Ā
ā€œYou donā€™t get a choice,ā€ My defiance ran deep. ā€œI am closing this case.ā€Ā
ā€œItā€™s my case!ā€Ā
ā€œNo.ā€ I said calmly. ā€œItā€™s my case. And it will be closed. Whether or not you walk free is up to you.ā€Ā
Draco scrutinized me with narrowed eyes.Ā
ā€œWhat is this? Some kind of power play?ā€ He asked.Ā
ā€œThis is my job. This is what I was given. And this is what Iā€™m going to do.ā€ I reached in my bag and pulled out a spare copy of the case notes and handed it to him. ā€œIā€™ll be back on Friday. 8 oā€™clock.ā€Ā
ā€œI canā€™t do Friday.ā€Ā
I gritted my teeth. ā€œOh, yeah, because you have so many places to be.ā€Ā
ā€œI canā€™t do Friday.ā€ He dug in harder. ā€œSaturday. Noon.ā€Ā
Inhaling sharply I rolled my eyes.
ā€œFine. Saturday. Noon.ā€Ā
