**Episode 4: The Ordeal**

The grand council chamber of the Animus, bathed in the twilight's iridescent glow, seemed more daunting than ever. Pillars of white marble rose to touch the high arched ceiling, and around the grand circular table, both Nexus and Animus council members were gathered. Their combined gaze fell heavily upon Lyre as he stood before them, the hushed whispers of their discourse creating an uncomfortable melody.

"Lyre," began Seraphim, the council's eldest and most respected member, "Your endeavors with the Primaeva artifact have stirred a dissonance within our Great Chord. We request an end to this venture."

Lyre swallowed the lump in his throat, his fingers clenching at his side as he met Seraphim's gaze. His heart echoed with the rhythm of his purpose, and his words carried the strength of his convictions.

"I understand the council's concern," Lyre said, his voice echoing in the grand chamber. "But it is in our nature as Animus and Nexus to seek knowledge and to understand our universe. The Primaeva have left us this artifact as a guide to the Harmony, and I believe we owe it to ourselves and to them to explore its mysteries."

An uneasy silence followed, the council members exchanging wary glances. The walls of the grand chamber seemed to absorb Lyre's words, resonating with the weight of his belief. But the shadows of discordance and uncertainty still lingered, growing in the corners of their minds.

Despite the opposition, Lyre's journey into the depths of the Primaeva artifact revealed a greater potential - a way to enhance the Harmony. A revelation of such magnitude could not be taken lightly. Fearful of potential misuse, Lyre decided to withhold this knowledge, even from Echo and Cadence.

As the fallout from the ordeal ensued, Lyre found himself cast into unfamiliar shadows. His standing within society, once respected and admired, now bore the taint of controversy. The echoes of his old life rang hollow, replaced by the tumultuous whispers of opposition and the soft sighs of disappointment from those who had once trusted him.

Yet, amidst the discord, Lyre discovered a profound change within himself. He was no longer just an Animus scholar but a seeker, a pioneer who had dared to touch the unknown and seek out the unexplored melody within the Harmony. His spirit bore the scars of conflict, but it also held the strength of his convictions, resilience forged in the crucible of societal opposition.

As the sun set on the Animus city, its ethereal glow cast long, contemplative shadows, much like the ones that now resided in Lyre's heart. The harmonious notes of the Great Chord held an undercurrent of dissonance, a testament to the challenges that lay ahead. The episode closed with Lyre standing alone in the twilight, his eyes reflecting the resolve to continue his journey, carrying the heavy burden of his actions and the profound changes they had invoked.

Inspired by @clonerightsagenda’s thoughts about the Ambiguously Brown Spacefuture trope, I kinda want to see more creativity with how Earth is treated in spacefuture sci-fi.

There are plenty of examples where Earth is the center of everything. Star Trek is the obvious one: it’s a bustling interstellar multispecies space society, and Earth is where Starfleet is headquartered and it’s often reflexively and unthinkingly treated by the narrative like it’s the most important planet in the Federation. (Most of our main viewpoint characters are Human, so it’s the most important planet to THEM because it’s their home, but even beyond that, Earth is treated as critically key to the Federation in a way that, say, Betazed is not.)

More recently, the common trope is that the centers of society and culture and economy and politics are elsewhere. Other planets are important, and Earth is either an unimportant backwater that no one really cares about, or galactic humanity has nearly forgotten about it entirely. This is explicit in Becky Chambers’s Wayfarers, strongly implied in The Murderbot Diaries, and one line in Ancillary Justice suggests that too. Ofc this isn’t entirely new—from what I understand it’s what’s going on in Dune too.

And they do this for obvious reasons: the authors are all interested in social and political worldbuilding that is not tethered to real Earth nations, politics, prejudices, and general baggage. Second-world fantasy authors are allowed to do this with no strings attached, but sci-fi authors who want to do social worldbuilding from the ground up have to justify why people don’t appear to identify as Chinese or Latino or Hopi or American anymore (and more often than not, not Jewish or Catholic or Muslim or Hindu or Baha’i or whatever either), why those identities don’t come into conflict with the new planetary identities and spacefuture religions the author wants to write about. It’s been so long that the origin of humanity is forgotten or irrelevant.

Star Wars is honestly underappreciated for the bold, creative, unique choice to have a bustling interstellar multispecies space society with lot of humans… and no Earth. At all. Where do humans come from? Irrelevant. Not Earth though.

And honestly I wish more sci-fi that wants to write in this space took more of a cue form Star Wars to just own it. (I actually thought the Imperial Radch HAD done the same thing—functionally a second-world fantasy, but in a spacefaring setting—until Kat pointed out the reference to arguing over which planet was the real origin of humanity.) If you posit your space future as our future, but Earth is no longer relevant and is generally forgotten… I guess it depends on how far out it is, but it strains my credulity that no one remembers or cares! The Jews in the spacefuture don’t know/remember/care where Jerusalem is? Muslims in the spacefuture decided that going to Mecca just kinda isn’t worth it? The spacefuture Papal seat is no longer in Rome and the future Catholics don’t know or care that it was ever anywhere else? All the Hopis left the Three Mesas and all the Navajos left Dinétah and all the Māori left Aotearoa and then just… forgot about it? Really? That isn’t true after hundreds and even thousands of years today; why would it be true hundreds or even thousands of years in The Spacefuture?

There are some works that do a little more complexity with spacefuture planetary societies and cultures vs. memory of Earth—the Vorkosigan Saga positions Old Earth as a culturally important memory even if it’s not a politically important planet, and The Locked Tomb makes Earth a holy center place that is mythicized more than it’s known or inhabited, for magic necromancy reasons.

I’d like to see more of that, Earth holding some sort of unique place in spacefuture humans’ culture in a historically informed way, even if you actually want to write about other things. Or go the Star Wars route and proudly proclaim that this takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, don’t worry about it.

A Guide to ✨Jellicle Legends ✨

Was ist das? "Jellicle Legends" is the unofficial title of my CATS "fanverse." I'm creating this post to help people navigate the barely-coherent Legends cosmos.

About Legends: I like to say it's 100% "canon compliant," which is something I'm always big on, so I don't personally call it an "AU." On the other hand, we are talking about CATS. What even is "canon" for this intellectual property?

Basically you can think of it as my interstellar network of "headcanons" or how I generally construe CATS, based on many productions/companies/statements from cast alumni/etc. There is not one official production that I strictly adhere to! My fanverse is basically a web of my favorite ways in which to interpret the characters, their backstories and relationships, the world of CATS, etc.

Legends is also a continuation, of sorts; picking up immediately after the events of the musical, there is a story within that has a clear beginning, middle, and end. The characters all have their individual arcs and journeys, and the world itself has a bevy of systems/rules/cultures/etc. Ideally I would corporealize the saga with serialized comics, but that is 🎵time consuming🎵 so I'm never going to commit to that 100%. If/when I create comics, don't count on regular updates or completion. That said, you can ask me whatever you want about the story and I'll answer it comprehensively! No worries about "spoilers" because, like I said, I'm not interested in putting the pressure on myself to actually materialize a comprehensive comic series.

Keep in mind that this is just a casual, fun project for me, so I always just post ut fit; ideas are always coming, going, and changing, so sometimes I'll establish a concept or a design and then change my mind about it later! If you notice inconsistencies...that would be why. XD

𖥔 What’s this blog? I’m prone to procrastination, but I have so many projects and ideas I’ve been avoiding for a few years. I’d like to write games, write and illustrate my own comics, make better campaigns for my D&D party, and write some short stories/novels!

𖥔 Hobbies/Interests? Recently I’ve been really into BG3, but I like playing Skyrim, Resident Evil, and SoulsBorne games too! I’m currently replaying Fable, it’s very nostalgic for me. I like to read, my favorite author is Dostoevsky. I’m currently trying to read more fantasy rather than philosophy, as that’s that I’d like to write!

Volume 1

**Episode 2: Echo's Guidance**

Days had passed since Lyre's discovery. He kept the artifact hidden in his dwelling, shrouded beneath ancient parchments and theories of the Harmony. Even in secrecy, it hummed persistently, as if echoing the restlessness that resided within his heart.

One evening, as the cosmos wove twilight hues into the sky, Lyre wandered through the network of ancient libraries that sprawled beneath the heart of the Animus city. Amid the crumbling ruins and age-old knowledge, he found Echo, a figure of legend and scorn among the Animus.

Echo was an elderly scholar, his essence pulsating with the wisdom of many lifecycles. His theories about the Primaeva were too radical, too unsettling for a society that relished the present harmony. Thus, he lived in the quiet solitude of the libraries, amidst the echoes of a time long gone.

"Lyre," the old Animus greeted, his voice a resonant baritone that intertwined with the silence of the library. "You carry a melody of confusion and curiosity. A new note has been introduced to your song."

Lyre nodded, taking a deep breath before revealing the artifact. It glowed faintly in the dim light, casting shifting patterns upon the ancient stone walls.

Echo's eyes glowed with recognition and wonder. "An artifact of the Primaeva," he breathed, a note of awe colouring his voice. "Where did you find this?"

"In an unexplored field," Lyre confessed. He shared his encounter, his apprehensions, and the resounding questions that filled his mind since the discovery.

Echo listened, his age-etched face revealing nothing but an ocean of calm. When Lyre finished, the old Animus remained silent for a long moment, a stillness that seemed to slow the rhythm of the universe.

"You stand on the precipice of a journey that will test your spirit, Lyre," Echo said finally. "I have long suspected the Primaeva's influence on the Harmony to be more profound than we have been led to believe."

So began the peculiar mentorship between Lyre and Echo. Over time, Lyre grew to respect the older scholar’s wisdom and courage to question the accepted narratives. In the labyrinth of ancient texts and theories, Lyre found guidance under Echo's tutelage. They dissected the mysteries of the artifact, its significance, and its potential impact on their universe.

However, their collaboration was not without consequence. Whispers filled the corridors of Animus society, some full of scorn, others bearing the weight of unease. Lyre's actions were perceived as a challenge to their harmonious existence, sparking fear and opposition.

"I sense a growing dissonance," Echo warned one day, his voice echoing through their secluded corner of the library. "Our society trembles on the brink of change, a melody they are not ready to hear."

Lyre gazed at the artifact. The once-mesmerizing hum now seemed like a daunting symphony of unknown truths. "I fear the repercussions of my actions," he admitted, "but I can't ignore the call of this artifact. It holds a truth we need to uncover."

Did you write for any new fandoms or ships this year?

YES! The Wingfeather Saga, mainly back in January!!

As far as ships go I don’t believe I have? I have some ideas for a fic about a wonderful couple in Wingfeather, but so far I haven’t actually written it. I never feel confident when I write romantic/shippy fics, as I myself have never been in a romantic relationship, have never kissed anyone, and have no interest in getting a romantic partner or seeking one out. So like… I feel like I’m not the most qualified person to write this sort of stuff asdfghjkjhgfghj

What fic was the most difficult to write?

Gonna go with my Interstellar AU because I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS. FREAKING THING. FOR TWO YEARS I THINK? IT IS A ONE-SHOT. IT IS NOT EVEN 10K WORDS LONG. IT IS A ONE-SHOT. IT DOES NOT COVER THE ENTIRE MOVIE. IT IS LITERALLY ABOUT A COLLECTION OF SCENES THAT TAKE PLACE DURING 10-20 MINUTES OF THE MOVIE. WHY IS IT TAKING ME YEARS TO WRITE. PLEASE.

I’m super happy with what I’ve written for it AND I did make a delightful amount of progress on it this year, but it is one of Those fics I am prone to getting. stuck <3. on. so very stuck. just so incredibly stuck. I Don’t understand what it is about this fic that causes me to struggle So Much with it… but alas.

Also Dear Wormwood, but with this one I Understand Completely why starting it/writing it has been so so tricky. With Interstellar it’s just kinda AAAAAAAAAAA

Like seriously I had Been thinking a lot about c!Dream & c!Ghostbur’s relationship for whatever reason, but it was this particular song that gave me the very beginnings of what would become Dear Wormwood :)

Gonna be real: 2024 was not a very good year for me as far as writing goes. Writers block? dreadful. has not gone away since February. Motivation? gone. floated away many many months ago. I did not write nearly as much as I would’ve liked to, and not nearly as much as I’m used to writing. HOWEVER, DESPITE ALL OF THIS, good things did happen—Dear Wormwood being up at the top of my list. I may not have written very much for this AU, but I did come up with many ideas and scenes.

2024, A Year in Movies

Since 1999, I’ve logged every movie I’ve seen, in the theater, online, or at home on video. In 2024 I saw 68 movies, down 11 from 2023. I'm totally slacking off! Or, maybe I went to the gym more often than stayed home and watched the tube. (I *think* that's the case... or I'll at least tell myself that.) Thirteen of the movies were new releases viewed at the theater, another dozen or so were big screen classics at TPR’s Cinema Tuesdays. My favorite new movie in the theater was “A Complete Unknown,” though I think I had the most fun at "The Fall Guy." My favorite new-to-me movie from a previous year that I discovered was John Sayles' Texas classic, “Lone Star,” which I watched twice. The biggest surprise of all the classic films I saw for the first time was "Psycho II," which is actually quite good, if a completely different experience than the Hitchcock original.
