Just out of school, I wrote reviews of “weird” web sites for this magazine as well as a bunch of others like ‘Net Magazine and Internet Underground. As an entry level writer, ‘Net paid me $400 a month ($796 in today money) to write 10 one hundred word website reviews! After a few years, all these magazines disappeared as people started visiting actual websites to get website reviews. Unfortunately, these magazines could not attract anywhere near the ad dollars for their stuff that the print versions could, and folded.
Rinse. Repeat Three Times... And welcome to our modern information economy where writers are barely paid at all, with a huge portion of the revenue going directly to the Googles and Apples. At least I can write for free here! Hello!!

⌨️Yahoo! Internet Life was a monthly magazine published by Ziff Davis, which licensed the name from Yahoo!, the well-known web portal and search engine website. It was created and launched by G. Barry Golson, the former executive editor of Playboy and TV Guide. The magazine was published 1996 — 2002, and focused on the emerging Internet and computer culture of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
💾The forerunner of Yahoo! Internet Life was started in 1995, when Ziff Davis invested in Yahoo! and subsequently published just one issue of ZD Internet Life. In 1996, along with other publications, Dan Rosensweig led the relaunch of the magazine as Yahoo! Internet Life – which had been retooled by Golson –before being appointed Yahoo! COO, in 2002, with Golson serving as editor-in-chief until the magazine's demise in 2002.
📀The magazine featured regular columns by film critic Roger Ebert, and others, and published many reviews of a variety of webpages and tech gadgets. Yahoo! Internet Life explored potentially controversial tech-related issues such as pornography and peer-to-peer technology.

it's always so funny to me when i get a new follower and they have shit like "proship DNI!!11!1!1" in their bio or pinned post. like brother my blog is not a safe space for you (neither is the entirety of the real world, but I don't think you people are ready for that conversation. on account of being probably 12 years old. cus that's what you're acting like.)
"censorship is bad" should not be a radical take in the year 2024. stop trying to sanitise the internet into some uber-puritan, ultra-virtuous, squeaky clean space. like what are you, catholic? i beg of you- grow up.

i don't think that protesting and 1960s-style activism is the way to go this time. we're exhausted, and we'll never be louder than them. it's time to quietly organize, let republicans shoot themselves in the dicks, and become totally ungovernable.

"[Lou] was a good friend through everything. We had this brother-sister type relationship in the group, and it lasted long after the group split. We would always exchange Christmas cards, Valentine cards. It was one of those friendships where it didn't matter if you didn't see each other a lot. We'd meet up after two years or five years and it would be like we'd seen each other last week. As you get older, you come to realize that that kind of friendship is rare, so I miss him a hell of a lot. It's just dawning on me that he's not out there anymore...Now Andy's gone, Sterling's gone, Nico's gone and Lou's gone. It feels strange. I miss them all, but I really miss Lou. He was a great songwriter who pushed the boundaries in terms of what he was writing about, but more importantly, he was a good and loyal friend. It doesn't seem right that I won't be sending him a Christmas card." (via)

correspondence from tucker to reed: undated valentine's day card + fax sent on january 1, 1996, referencing reed's obituary for sterling morrison, which had been published the day before in the new york times magazine.
