I was at an ethics training for judges and we got to the racism bit and a bunch of White judges got real squirmy. They started saying they were really unhappy and uncomfortable with people talking about people making snap decisions about them based on their pale skin color.

They really all thought that they could opt out of race all together. That they could say “I’m not like that,” and then never have to reckon with the history of what white people (or men) have done. And really, they only had to say “I’m not like that” to themselves for this to work.

Not how it works. Race is a social construct. No one gets to purely self determine their race. Society will treat you differently based on its perception.

If you look white you will be treated as white. Being white has privileges, many that white people aren’t aware of, and don’t like talking about. It also has baggage, which white people hate admitting even more.

Minorities will be wary of white people. As they should. Because of Reality. You want to “not be like that,” then you, the white person, have to prove through actions that you are not like that. I don’t mean lecturing. I mean living and behaving in a way that consistently makes BIPOC people comfortable. The same way so, so, so, many BIPOC people are always on edge to prove they are “one of the good ones.”

I promise you nothing will make a room of white people turn ashen and mean faster then telling them everyone understands they personally never had slaves, and weren’t alive for Jim Crow, or Asian internment, but that they are still responsible for that legacy. Cause race is a SOCIAL construct and not just a personal identity.

What I need for White Americans (ppl in general really, but I'm talking to the U.S.) to understand about Americans of Color is that You don't know Us, but We know YOU.

We've spent generations upon generations of our entire lives learning YOUR social norms, forced to assimilate to YOUR idea of society. We live and learn entirely separate cultures, but we also learn from birth what it means to have to cater to Whiteness in America. It's why I can name so many famous movies with white casts, but most white people didn't even know where "Bye Felicia" came from. It's why I was raised to professionally Code Switch from childhood, but grown white people struggle to even grasp the basics of the grammar of AAVE. It's why people who speak different languages think they have to give up their own mother tongue just to function in this country.

It's why you all are so uncomfortable with the idea of people of color questioning and rejecting what seems "normal" to you- and to be honest, I actually think older white generations are better at admitting this than younger ones. It's because what you know as normal is usually not "normal"- it's White. Whiteness is just as loud as any other presentation of race in this country, you just don't see it that way because everyone else has been forced to maintain your comfort. The entire system is built around it, and you don't even know it.

It's why it frustrates white Americans of some marginalization- queer, disabled, neurodivergent- because you do not have access to the "norm" as it is shown to you. But that frustration- literally everyone of color (who shares those identities btw) lives under that understanding.

Idk, I didn't really have a direction. I just think it's wild how so many conversations require this... Constant Verbal Leveling of the Playing Field simply because Whiteness blinds white people to what things ACTUALLY look like out here.

I'm in the middle of an argument with some nutjob on Twitter who is insisting that Mary was Muslim! You know, the religion that was founded centuries after she died?

Noa Cohen is Mizrahi. She was born in Israel. She’s visibly Middle Eastern in appearance. She does not and has never, according to any available information that I can find, live on any of the Israeli settlements in the West Bank or Golan Heights (settlements aren’t really where you go for acting opportunities). When they say “settler”, they meaning any Jew living anywhere in the land, even if they were born there, even if they are Mizrahi, even if they are indistinguishable from their neighbors.

Those who erase the Indigenousness of Jews, who rewrite history to insist that a Jewish woman who lived in first century Judea, nearly 19 centuries before the Palestinian identity was a twinkling in Khalil Beidas’s eye, was actually an Arab Palestinian and must be played by an Arab rather than a Jew, are pushing colonial propaganda.

The delusion that Jewish ties to the Levant began with Zionism and that the Levant belongs solely to Arabs is a colonial lie. It serves the goal of manifest destiny and ultimately justifying genocide against Jews.
