Happy International Day of People with Disabilities! ♿ Basically it's a day to celebrate me 😜 I kid I kid! But seriously today is really important and a day to share, support and uplift disabled creators, & show appreciation for disabled family & friends. If there was one thing that was made very clear this year, is how important accessibility is for EVERYONE. The ability to work from home and have access to food, shops, bathrooms, public spaces etc, has been something everyone has suddenly been made very aware of what is actually capable, something we've known & been asking for our entire lives! Things we need to ensure stay in place for the people who still need them when things "go back to normal" for the average abled person. I want today to be a celebration, not a negative day, but we definitely still do have a long way to go to get disability & ableism taken seriously & equally. Yesterday was International People with Disabilities Day. I missed it (classic) because I'm disabled and still trying to get money to pay the bills from October and November which has pulled me away from just about everything as of late. I wish I could be more present with people right now but it's overwhelming. I'm grateful for the relative financial privilege I do have, but holy shit. My heart goes out to all who are scrambling 24/7 to keep going physically, emotionally, and financially. The people who are houseless or forced to remain in a house with an abuser in order to avoid becoming houseless. I so appreciate your struggle and hard work to keep your amazing selves alive. I do not take you for granted and I'm sorry that so many people treat us as such. In truth, we are medicine and have so much to offer just by being who we are. I know it, you know it, hopefully someday everyone else will know it. Reminders even to ourselves are vital in a world like this constantly communicating the opposite. I first met her at Vietnamese Language School and we bumped into each other again a few years later. It is an honour to have Hanna in my life as it not only adds flavour to my community work but also strengthens and awakens me to reconnect with my Vietnamese roots in a raw and authentic way. Being disabled is the most challenging, demanding, exhausting, frustrating, wonderful, beautiful part of my identity and I wouldn’t change any part of it. Day well made. #InternationalDayOfPeopleWithDisability Thanks to the Concordia Primary School teachers for the warm welcoming once more. This time round we were exercising the freedom of expression through bead work. This was practically seen with the presence of our two #DifferentlyAbled friends who's passion is more on bead work as their part and parcel of life.
