"Medical education and labor practices produce adversarial patient-provider relationships that the medical industry prof i ts from. Medical school is extremely expensive, and scholarships are limited to those who excel academically. Weeding out many of the poorest applicants makes it so that even potential doctors are primarily wealthy and white. Student loans function as an additional means of control: the threat of fi nancial ruin without lucrative employment motivates even young and otherwise progressive practitioners to stay in line and not take risks on behalf of patients.

Both medical and nursing programs are extremely rigorous, forcing students to ignore their own physical and emotional needs—this lays the groundwork for a “tough it out” culture in the medical workplace, which is then transferred to a lack of empathy in patient care. It also prevents most disabledpeople (who may have lived experiences that cause them to be more empathetic and thus potentially more willing to bend or break rules) from making it through school.

Finally, the monotonous, assembly-line-style function of hospitals and practices reduces people to patients, and patients to a set of standard tests and procedures—a stack of paperwork to complete. Any suffering human being whose needs fall outside the limited, profit-driven procedural dictated by insurance companies and hospital administration becomes a jam in the system, an irritating problem that keeps the medical staff from being able to get on with their day. Medical professionals are drafted from (primarily) perspective-limited backgrounds and then traumatized, overworked, threatened with personal fi nancial consequences for not performing, and encouraged to blame patients with unique needs rather than the system at fault. They are positioned to be extremely defensive of their time, intellect, and strength of character, and then pitted against patients who are forced to place demands on their limited time and empathetic capacity to receive adequate care. The system gives them an out—an easy answer that isn’t true, that they probably don’t even believe, but that is within reach: medicine is empirical, so if a patient has a condition or set of needs that contradicts the assembly line, they’re the problem.

Which begs the question: Why should we allow medical professionals so much responsibility over our wellness?"

How Avatar glorifies erasing disability

Avatar (2009) ends with Jake transferring his consciousness to his Avatar body, ultimately erasing disability in this society and planet. Angry Hippie  emphasizes the ability to move consciousness is a profound question and says, "While many thought they were being clever by dissecting this movie to exploit  its' flaws, they were merely peeling the first layer of the onion." In my opinion, there are layers of ableism that Angry Hippie missed. His favorite scene is when Jake (who has paraplegia) runs for the first time in his Avatar body. This scene I dislike the most falls into tropes of disabled people wanting to be "fixed" or "better." I cannot speak to how it feels to become disabled later in life, as Jake was. But I can say that these ableist messages portraying disabled people as weak and valuable only as inspiration are not helpful for anyone, disabled or not. 

Internal ableism comes from society. Angry Hippie points out that Jake running as a person with paraplegia is only surface level. This I agree with, but he goes  on to say, "it was a brilliant way to build an emotional connection to the  audiences" and "on a deeper level, however, the visual representation of Jake, a  crippled man, is a reflection of the state of the human race."  (AVATAR: In-Depth Analysis) 

In my opinion, the word "crippled" is somewhat offensive, but others have reclaimed it. The comments here demonstrate ableism because he's saying that Jake running is inspirational or at least emotional for the audience. Inspiration is what disabled characters are usually meant to convey on screen. My first impression of the film was that the disabled representation was adequate because the film did not revolve around disability. 

That is a double-edged sword highlighting the line between erasing disability and presenting a fully realized character that happens to have a disability.

@specialolympicsusa @specialolympics As of right now I’m not allowed to go to the state competition. This morning we learnt from Elizabeth Francis who is the area director of @specialolympicswashington that because I was not entered during the “pre registration” stage (instead I was entered before the “final” registration), I won’t be allowed to go to the winter games next week. This came to a complete surprise to me and my coaches as we all had understood that anyone up until the “final” registration was allowed to go, not only the pre registered people. This was not the case ever before. Several of the coaches have been trying to contact the higher ups to try and rectify the situation, but they keep telling them to talk to Elizabeth who refuses to even listen to the coaches, to our understanding. I am not the only one being hurt by this. Despite had having previous conversations with Elizabeth, when we had first entered, she did not make any of this information available, and in fact barely gave us any information at all despite us asking for help to understood so we wouldn’t be having this problem. An apathetic, uncooperative, and uncaring person should not be working with disabled people. This has been my first experience with the #specialolympics and if it is always like this, then that is truly terrible to all the people who try to join. If we had been told upfront that the preregistration was the only registration allowed, then we wouldn’t have any problems, but because she kept this information from everyone, it has caused a very large issue The complete unprofessional actions of Elizabeth and the fact that only people who “pre” registered are allowed to go, is completely ridiculous. This whole situation has caused me several stress and extreme disappointment, and loss of money.
