pop quiz!
these questions are from the international linguistics olympiad (questions posted originally on a twitter thread). They can be solved through pure logic, but personal knowledge of languages is always fine to consider! My correct answers and process below the cut.
Sake and Katana are the easiest to find referencing Karaoke, Haiku and Koi will both have an "i", and every "-a" word had a dot at the top left, making the "ta" in "atari" easy. I also know a bit of hiragana (one of the japanese alphabets) already, and that A I U E O are the beginning.
Second image answers are C and D. Diane's sentence tells me that strungy and struffy are "good", so i kept track of if things are presented as opposites. The sentence forms are pretty much "good and good", "bad and bad", "good but bad", "bad but good".
"masterō and masters" appear the most times on the right, which aligned with cyriōn / cyriu / cyrios / cyrioi. I know that languages can sometimes reverse the order of things, so B/F, E/H, can be connected to 1/4, 6/8 (not knowing which pair to which).
Then i know that either -ōn or -ou must be plural, and -oi or -os must be plural. There's actually 5 instances of -ōn, and 5 instances of "of the [plural]", whereas "the [thing] of" has 4 singulars and 4 plurals. This led to the A and B note at the top of each column, and from there it was matching and deduction.

I wrote a short Trevor/Jamie rule 63 to exorcise some demons about feminization kink and sexism. Competition math/college AU because AO3 was missing a tag for International Math Olympiad.
When Jamie gets back to Trevor’s dorm room, Trevor is digging through Jamie’s drawer of his dresser again. He pulls out a black lace skirt, the one she wore on her first day of high school. Back then it sat lower on her hips than it should, and her legs looked like twigs coming out the bottom. Since then her hips have come in, and now the waistband sits above her belly button. If she wears it without tights it looks obscene. On Trevor it looks chaste. The way it used to look on her.
In the words of @lizziemack: Sometimes you just have to take out the trauma of girlhood on your first college boyfriend.

Programming vs. Coding
Though often used interchangeably, programming and coding are distinct terms that describe different aspects of creating software. Understanding these differences is essential, especially for beginners or those teaching concepts like programming for kids.
What is Coding?
Coding is the act of writing instructions in a language that a computer can understand. These instructions, written in programming languages like Python, Java or C++, tell the computer what to do.
Think of coding as translating human ideas into a format the machine can process. Coders focus on the syntax and rules of a specific language, ensuring the commands are structured correctly. It is the foundational skill needed to start developing software or applications.
What is Programming?
Programming encompasses coding but goes beyond it to include the planning, design, testing and debugging of software. A programmer focuses on creating complete solutions, considering user needs, system requirements and scalability.
For example, a programmer might design an entire application, breaking it down into smaller tasks (or modules), which are then coded. Programming requires knowledge of algorithms, data structures and problem-solving techniques.
When teaching programming for kids, the focus often shifts to simple, interactive projects where they not only code but also think critically about how the program should function.
Key Differences
Scope: Coding is a subset of programming. While coding focuses on writing commands, programming involves broader tasks like system design and debugging.
Creativity: Programming requires strategic thinking and planning, while coding focuses on translating instructions into computer-readable formats.
Tools: Coders use code editors, while programmers use a variety of tools, including version control systems, integrated development environments (IDEs) and debugging software.
Why It Matters
Understanding the distinction between coding and programming is crucial for anyone entering the tech field. While coding is the entry point, programming develops the skills necessary for creating functional, efficient software.
For beginners, particularly children, starting with coding through resources like learning to program for kids introduces them to the world of technology, setting the stage for deeper learning and innovation.

Parents may wonder why Olympiad exams are beneficial for their children. Olympiads, in general, provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain exposure to different experiences and prepare them for the future.
They will be presented with other challenges, and they will learn to be confident when answering questions.Today, many parents encourage their children to participate in Olympiad exams to prepare them for competitive exams in the future.
Objectives of the Unified international mathematical olympiad:
Developing students' mathematical reasoning and logical abilities.
Examining their understanding of concepts.
Assessing students' mathematical, arithmetic, and calculative skills.
Enhancing thinking capabilities.
As a result of competing in the UIMO, participants will have the opportunity to shine on a global stage and take great pride in representing their state or country. For a student, nothing could be more rewarding.

This perspective on gender and mathematics
While learning pure mathematics, there was a persistent self-loathing along the lines of: “You will never dream of staying in academia if you can’t even finish Hartshorne’s Algebraic Geometry.”
So here onwards, I dream of cultivating a more feminine mathematical culture. Partly, that means to be honest with all sorts of emotions that arise from mathematical practice. Even though I see mathematics itself as a genderless activity, the gendered culture brought by mathematicians is real.
made me think of my own fanfic
Trevor shrugged. “Sure, but that’s, like, competition math. It’s all bullshit.”
Bullshit that Trevor had won. Bullshit that Jamie was proud of.
“Besides, you know they’re always trying to get more girls there.” He twirled his pencil between his fingers. His hand looked soft. Delicate. “Whatever. It’s just Top 1. Either you get it or you don’t.”
