Regular potatoes are labelled unhealthy a lot these days. For some reason people think sweet potatoes are healthier and have more essential nutrients than regular potatoes. Is this true? Let's find out! __ First of all they don't differ a lot when we look at the macro's only. Regular potatoes do have a little bit more protein but the difference is negligible. They are both complex carbs and they both have about 2 g of fiber per 100 g. So in this case it's definitely not a 'white-brown' or 'healthy-unhealthy' kind of story like there is in pasta for example. The carbs in both regular as sweet potatoes are starch and fiber which will help you stay lean and healthy, when it's part of a healthy and balanced diet. Sweet potato are a bit higher in simple carbs ('sugar) but know that these are intrinsic sugars. __ They do have a different composition in vitamins and minerals. Sweet potatoes are high in beta carotene, vitamin C, calcium and iron. Regular potatoes are high in vitamin B6, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and iron. So they BOTH have enormous and essential nutrients. To answer the above question, sweet potatoes are definitely NOT healthier than regular potatoes. Sweet potatoes are a great variation to the regular potatoes. What one lacks, the other one makes up for. __ You'll be better off incorporating both into your diet rather than either one alone! So my point comes back to the fact that no food or nutrient is healthy nor unhealthy. Balance, moderation and variety is key. __ 🔗Beta carotene is also called provitamin A which is converted in vitamin A in the body.
