Such a tiny scene. Very brief, but

Six months later, grieving First Aid, always to walk into the medbay and see Ambulon’s desk, first thing. And then to his workshop, with Ambulon’s corpse.

Thor and Loki arrived in the dead of night when only a single flood light was left illuminating the empty lawn that sprawled between the buildings of the Avenger’s compound. The two gods left a large, circular, burnt patch of grass when they landed, marking their dramatic entrance back into the lives of the Avengers and leaving a smouldering pattern in their wake.
Safe inside the private penthouse, Wanda took the lead explaining the vivid and detailed dreams they had all been experiencing since your arrival. Thor had laughed heartily, slapping the small witch on the back and sending her flying forwards with the force. But Loki was intrigued, a slow smirk appeared on his face as he sat to the side of the vast living room, toying with sparks of magic between his fingers and thinking of the beings he’d met that could wield such powers.
“You’re frightened of your own lusts. Typical, petty mortals. They are but dreams,” the gold spark flashed green, lighting up his face and swirling in the dim light of the early dawn. Loki’s leather trousers creaked against the contrasting white of the expensive couches that lined the living space.
“She controls these dreams, what else can she control? What else can she make us think?” Steve rushed out. Loki was impressed. He had never seen the Captain this flustered or confused. Whatever power the little mortal possessed it was surely powerful if it could render the normally clear headed Captain a garbled mess.
“So what do you want of me?” He asked, long legs resting on the coffee table with a soft thunk of his boots.
“We need to know what she is. Is it magic, mutation or something else?” Bruce cleaned his glasses, yawning as he let his eyes drift to the clock above the faux mantle piece. “I’ve run out of ideas, but she can shape shift, change her appearance sometimes, like you,” he looked over at Loki “but we’ve yet to see her pose a material threat
which is somehow worse. That we could deal with. But it’s the-” he trailed off, waving his hand in a circle.
“Not knowing.” Natasha interjected and Bruce nodded at her in agreement.
Loki went quiet, thinking, the magic he had been playing with dying in his hands from sparks to embers to nothing. Shape shifting was, really, simple magic, something his mother had taught him as a young boy. It would seem especially extraordinary to such mortals, but it was also something that, though simple, took a great deal of practice and instruction to perfect. Wherever she had learnt this trick, it must have been somewhere equally magical.
“She can shape shift. Interesting. Can I see her?” Loki bent forwards, resting his elbows on his knees and surveying the Avengers, the golden twinkles that had danced between his fingers now dancing behind his eyes.
“Tomorrow” Steve said, decisively, “I think we should all enjoy some peaceful sleep while we can and then, tomorrow, you can meet her”
“Ahh, she isn’t here, is she?” Loki asked, trying hard not to sound too eager.
“No, we’ve separated her. We thought it would be safer.” Tony tried to explain.
“You’ve imprisoned her?” He scoffed, “frightened children, scared of anything you don’t understand,” Loki stood and walked off, “I have no time for this.”

Loki waited until everyone was asleep before exploring the compound properly. The layout was in clear blocks, with apartments lining up with the offices and laboratories below. Knowing they wouldn’t have let her leave for the secondary building on the campus, one where junior agents and scientists may be living, he deduced she must be somewhere in the medical bays. It didn’t take Loki long to find the secure room in the medical wing, mostly because, once he got close enough, there were hundreds of signs telling people to stay away.
The room itself was dark, but he could see a figure inside through the two way mirror, wearing what looked like a big white t-shirt dress, but it had marks on it, measurements.
The mortals had said she could shapeshift, so it was unclear whether this was her true form, as he watched her hair fade through a spectrum of white, grey and black, curling tight and then falling around her shoulders with each intake of breath while she slept. Like the tide ebbing and flowing along the shore, she seemed to change from one moment to the next, whenever he found a fixed spot, a hair length, a beauty mark, the tone of her skin against the bedding, even her height, it appeared to change again, imperceptibly at first and then it was shocking he had ever held the previous image of her in his mind.
He pressed his forehead against the cool glass and closed his eyes thinking.
Images flooded his thoughts, she was awake in them, smiling, dancing, singing, her hair bright red, then black. She was looking at him and smiling, not smirking or smug, a warm smile. Her white shift morphing into green, gold, black and back again. A gown, a cape, a corset, nothing and back again. He saw others, women and men he had known before and felt their hands, lips, kisses and sweat in his skin. Then he felt her hand, sensed her magic as it touched his own.
He woke with a start just before dawn, the taste of her, of you, of something lost to the passage of time, on his tongue.
The Captain was right to be worried. If you had projected this on him from the other side of the glass without even seeing him, what wonders had you conjured up for the innocent Avengers? If he was right, then your powers had grown immeasurably since you’d last seen each other, but The Captain and the bossy one had suggested you couldn’t explain your powers at all.
This was powerful magic, it thrummed in his bones and called to his own sedir. He had sensed it only once before, a long time ago on Asgard, although it was definitely not Asgardian. Nor was it Midgardian sorcery either.
He smiled, it would be like an Asgardian to play such games with mortals, but equally, perhaps you truly didn’t know your strength. Either way this was going to be an awful lot of fun, Loki thought, flicking his hand to straighten his sleep roughened clothes.
He watched as you woke, blinking, using the blanket to wipe sweat from your eyes. You looked around, through the mirror and straight into his eyes, unseeing, and then turned away. Your hands worked under the thin sheet, disappearing from his direct sight, although he could see the tell tale creep of your fingers as they inched lower.
Behind the glass, you gasped and Loki took a step forward, as close as he dared, watching as you moaned and moved, sighing along with you as you panted out your release. As you moved your hand back above the hospital sheets, your hair shimmered again, blushed pink and fushia.
The sun was starting to lift and the curtains parted on the small glass window, looking out over the surrounding woods. Your arms lifted too, yawning, eyes closed and light flooded the room, your hands touched your hair, assessing the changes in texture, length and colour before dropping back to your sides. The light vanished, back to the ethereal glow of sunrise.
Drumming his fingers he watched you move around the room, you didn’t seem to have any other clothes. But you splashed your face and brushed your teeth, watching the sun rise.
Inside the room you felt hot and itchy still. You had had a vivid dream, not of the people in the compound. Now there was someone new. He was tall, hair dark around his shoulders, lithe but muscular. You had felt him in your dreams, his slender fingers dancing on your forehead and cooling your skin. The tang of metal on your tongue. In the dream he held you, his hands tantalising but not enough to satisfy. In an attempt to rid yourself of this feeling your own fingers had danced beneath the large nightgown you’d been forced to wear, but even as you woke, the feeling lingered.
Washing your face and brushing your teeth did nothing to distract you from the sensation. Instead you climbed back onto the bed, pushed the sheets down and lay back. In vain you tried to picture the man again and as you did your fingertips dipped below the elastic of your underwear. He had dark hair, her hair, in return, darkened, smoothing out the curls into gentle flicks. He wore dark clothing. His fingers were slender, elegant, you felt a nudge against that secret spot inside of yourself and pulled back shocked. Your hands looked different, the usually small palms were wider and the fingers were longer too. You pushed back inside, pressing and grinding into your palm until you felt your legs tighten, toes curling and cried out.
Hopefully that would satisfy you for now. Standing, you examined your ruffled hair in the mirror, admiring the mirror shine of the now dark locks. You were starting to enjoy the changes in your appearance, it was fun, at least, to see yourself with a different body, a different slope to your nose, a tint to your eyes and various textures of hair.
You turned from the small mirror to the larger one next to the door and approached slowly, eyeing the length of your white shift to assess her new height, much taller, at least 4 inches. Stopping in front of the mirror you made your eyes wide, gold flecks alongside dark pupils. They’d go back to grey soon but, for a moment, you enjoyed this ethereal look.
On the other side of the mirror Loki watched, inches away, as you slowly took on subtle characteristics until, suddenly, he could see his dark hair, his blue grey eyes, you even looked taller. He took a step away from the glass. The changes were simple enough, if you knew how, but how had you done it when, surely you, couldn’t see him. He was breathless. The Captain was right, this was no mortal being, this was powerful magic, old magic.
A door along the corridor banged and you both jumped, Loki looked around hastily for an excuse to be here, rifling some papers. When he looked back you were sat on the bed again, cross legged, hair a pale red, eyes the same grey as the morning light beginning to burn through the curtains of your hospital room and his heart clenched. He’d been locked up before, misunderstood and mislabeled as something so much worse than he was. Used and cast aside as a pawn in some cosmic political game.
Loki’s jaw tightened as he made his decision.
He would help you, he would get you out of this prison, he would teach you to control your magic. But he would not give you back to the Avengers.

Can you do a fluffy wanda one (with a little angst because of course) where reader and wanda are best friends, reader wants more, but thinks wanda is interested in vision so she doesnt say anything. And then one day a mission goes wrong, and reader gets into an accident that results in her getting powers, and it makes wanda wake up and confess her feelings?
Requited Love

Summary: Wanda Maximoff and Y/N L/N are your typical best friends who refuse to admit their feelings for each other.
Word Count: 3.3K (had a lil too much fun with this)
(gif is not mine)
Tumblr media
You and your best friend, Wanda, had been friends practically since the moment she had joined the team. Being the youngest Avenger, you were so excited that there would finally be another member that was close to your age. Despite the events of Sokovia, you didn’t fear the woman. If anything, it only made the urge to get closer to her stronger.
Her powers absolutely mesmerized you. From the color of her powers to the different ways she could use them to her advantage; it was mind blowing how much power she had literally at her fingertips. As time went on, you and Wanda became very close. You’d always have movie nights together in your room, which eventually led to the Sokovian woman peacefully sleeping next to you in your bed.
Not only was Wanda drop dead gorgeous, but she was genuine and humble. She had confided in you about the many different traumas she had been through and expressed how the surreal amount of grief constantly consumed her. It broke your heart to know that such an amazing person was put through so much.
Her past could’ve easily turned her into a villain, but she decided to go the opposite direction. She came to the conclusion that her powers could help others and that’s what she had chosen to do in Sokovia and up to now. It was why she had agreed to join the Avengers in the first place. Wanda knew how awful the world could be and she wanted to be there for people the way that her family had been before they passed. The amount of respect you had for Wanda was immeasurable.
Over the span of two years, you and Wanda became joined to the hip. Wanda didn’t even sleep in her own bed anymore. Before, she would just accidentally fall asleep in your room or sneak into your room in the late hours of the night to sleep with you. But now, she just barged into your room every night and slept there. She said that you kept the nightmares she had at bay and you were more than happy to be there for her if it meant she got a full night’s rest.
You both jumped at any opportunity you guys could to be on the same mission as the other. You not only wanted to spend time with her, but you wanted to protect her. Lord knows that Wanda of all people could handle herself, but it kept you at peace when you were with her; knowing that she had you to back her up. Naturally, you fell in love with your best friend.
At first, you thought you were just confusing your special platonic friendship with Wanda for romantic feelings. But sometimes you caught yourself wanting to kiss Wanda. You knew damn well that friends don’t daydream about making out with each other. So, yeah, you definitely had feelings for Wanda, but there was one thing standing in your way; Vision.
Vision basically joined the team at the same time Wanda did. He was created during the Ultron situation and has been an Avenger since then. Wanda and Vision were very close. They weren’t as close as you and Wanda were, but he was a close second. They had a bond over the mind stone that you couldn’t ever compete with. This fact discouraged you and forced you to keep your mouth shut. You’d rather keep your feelings to yourself and suffer in private than risk your friendship with Wanda.
I mean, you didn’t even know if Wanda was into girls! She could be as straight as a wooden ruler and you would most definitely embarrass yourself if you told her. Vision wasn’t exactly a man by any means, he was a robot. If Wanda were to like Vision that must mean you had a chance right? Not to be an ass, but he’s literally a hunk of metal. Regardless of all these thoughts, you knew at the end of the day that you would have to hide your feelings for the sake of maintaining the relationship you currently have with the Sokovian.
You did pretty good at hiding your feelings for awhile. You acted as if everything was normal and not like you were emotionally crying out inside every time you saw Wanda with Vision. It began to get too much when you had caught sight of the pair cooking Paprikash in the communal kitchen. Cooking was something you and Wanda used to do together. It was kind of your thing. It may seem silly, but watching her do something with Vision that used to be sacred to you both hurt.
You began to distance yourself the closer Wanda and Vision got together. What sucked even more was that Wanda didn’t even acknowledge your sudden distance. She no longer slept in your room, opting to spend her nights with Vision. You were dying inside and Wanda didn’t even care to notice.
You had a mission to get to today. Usually, Wanda would be down in the hangar whenever you were going on a mission without her, but she wasn’t there today. She was probably off somewhere with Vision, again. It stung that Wanda didn’t even want to see you off. She was so preoccupied with Vision that she didn’t even give you a second thought. A toaster was stealing your best friend who you just so happened to be madly in love with away from you. And you couldn’t do anything to stop it.
So, you reluctantly got onto the Quinjet with Steve who was accompanying you on the mission. Fury only sent you two in for this mission because it was a simple one. It didn’t require the entire team to complete. You both were to capture and detain the scientist responsible for the latest human experimentations at the hands of Hydra. From the intel gathered by S.H.I.E.L.D, their security wasn’t that bad so it would be a walk in the park for you and Steve. You had just left and you already desperately wanted to go home and wallow in your own self pity in the comfort of your bed.
But first, you had to get this mission over with. The Quinjet landed a little far away from the small Hydra base. You and Steve made your way out of the jet and began to trudge your way toward the building. As you guys got closer, Steve stopped abruptly.
“No matter what, we stick together okay? Just because this should be an easy mission, doesn’t mean we should let our guard down. Understand?” He lectured you sternly as he stared at you intensely.
“Yeah. I got it, Cap.” You replied to him dismissively as you continued to make your way toward the building. You took note of the five guards that were guarding the entrance and gave Steve a nod before you both sprung into action.
After you guys had taken down the entrance guards, you both sneakily made your way into the building. It was pretty easy to find your target, seeing that the building was the size of a house. You and Steve barged into the room, the scientist whipping around quickly and freezing in shock at the sight of you both.
Steve quickly charged at the man and placed him into handcuffs. As Steve pulled the man up by the collar, forcing him to his feet, a thought crossed your mind. This is too easy. Only five guards and the professor was just conveniently in here? This had to be a setup.
Before you could voice your concerns to Steve, you felt a sharp pain rip through your shoulder as Hydra agents flooded into the room. You fell to your knees in pain as Steve threw the target to the ground. He quickly began to fight as many agents as he could. You stood up as you tried to temporarily forget the pain. You began to take on agents yourself. Despite being injured, you kicked their asses with ease.
You were down to the last agent while Steve was pulling the scientist back up to his feet, much more aggressively this time. For some reason, your thoughts went to Wanda. How would she react to your injury? Would she even bother to visit you to make sure you were okay?
Unfortunately, you had chosen the wrong time to become distracted by your thoughts of Wanda. While your thoughts were racing, you failed to notice the glint of a knife in the agent’s left hand. As you blocked one of his punches, he quickly stabbed you right in the stomach. At this, Steve jumped in to help you and made quick work of knocking out the man who stabbed you.
You fully fell to the floor this time, gasping for air. Not only were you shot, but now you got stabbed. Seriously? Did god decide you weren’t already having a shitty enough time? Steve quickly picked you up in his arms in a panic. He carried you to the Quinjet while making sure the scientist was following behind you both. Steve placed your body onto the medical table that was in the Quinjet, handcuffed the man to a railing, and sped off to the compound. He took note of how much blood you lost; it was a lot to say the least. If he didn’t get to the compound soon, he feared you wouldn’t make it; and that wasn’t an option.
The 30 minute trip to the compound turned into a 15 minute ride. Steve quickly rushed you into the medical wing of the compound and placed you into the care of Doctor Helen Cho. He knew he had to tell the team about what happened. The Avengers were a family, and you being the youngest meant you were like a child to them, well besides Wanda obviously.
Steve hurriedly made his way into the living room of the Avenger’s living quarters and made sure Jarvis informed everyone that it was an emergency. As Steve entered, everyone turned to face him with worry present on each of their faces.
“What’s wrong, Rogers? Is everything okay?” Natasha asked as she looked over his body. There was an insane amount of blood all over his star-spangled suit. “It’s Y/N.”
At Steve’s words, everyone in the room stood in shock as their jaws dropped. But no one’s feelings could compare to Wanda’s. She abruptly stood up from the couch and made her way towards Steve.
“What about her? What happened to her?” Wanda began to get angry as hints of her powers made their way to her eyes. Steve took a step back and looked at Wanda before returning his gaze back to the other people in the room. You could hear a pin drop in the silence of the room.
“We went on a mission together. It was supposed to be an easy in and out thing. But we were setup. She got shot in the shoulder and stabbed in the abdomen. She’s in the medical wing right now.” Steve spoke strongly, attempting to remain calm for the sake of the team, but he was terrified inside. Your state refused to leave his mind. Your limp body in his arms as your warm blood covered his hands.
Wanda didn’t say another word as she ran towards the elevator and impatiently hit the button to the medical wing. She didn’t bother to wait for anyone else. Nothing mattered right now except you.
Wanda had feelings for you. Ever since she met you, you were this light in the darkness that was her life. You could cheer her up when no one else could. You knew her better than she knew herself. You were not only her best friend, but you were the woman she was irrevocably in love with. She was terrified to tell you how she felt. She thought she would lose you if she had confessed how she truly felt for you. So, she remained quiet and tried to forget about her feelings for you by hanging out with Vision more. She wasn’t using Vision by any means, she genuinely did enjoy his company. But he wasn’t you.
Wanda didn’t even wait for the elevator doors to fully open as she squeezed herself through the small gap and made her way towards the medical bay doors. Before Wanda could open the door, Steve abruptly grabbed her hand, stopping her from going any further. He must’ve taken the stairs. Damn his super soldier abilities.
“Wanda. Stop. I know you’re worried about Y/N, we all are. But barging in there won’t be any help. You need to let Cho and her nurses focus on helping her.” Steve desperately tried to talk some sense into Wanda; it worked. Wanda’s shoulders slumped as she made her way towards the seating area that was right outside the doors. All she could do was sit, wait, and pray to whatever god there was that you would be okay.
Wanda didn’t even know you were going on a mission today. If she did, she would’ve went to the hangar and hugged you before she left, like she always did. Oh fuck, she didn’t even get to see you off and now look at your state. Now that she thought about it, she had been neglecting you for some time now. She let her fear of her feelings consume her. She spent more time with Vision than with you, and now she wasn’t sure if she would get the opportunity to be with you again. The thought of not being able to tell you how in love with you she was mortified her. This was the wake up call she needed.
——————————————————————————
2 hours later
After two agonizingly slow hours, Doctor Cho made her way towards the anxious group of heroes. Wanda shot up from her seat and approached Helen.
“How is she? Please, tell me she’s okay.” Wanda asks as she nervously chews on her bottom lip. “Y/N is fine. Luckily, the knife didn’t hit any major arteries. She won’t be able to make any sudden movements for the next few weeks which means no missions until I give her clearance.” At Cho’s words, the entire team was struck with relief. Wanda’s eyes lit up at the good news. You were okay. You were still here.
“Can we see her?” Steve asked from behind Wanda as he made his way to stand beside her. “Yes, shes awkward, but only one person can go in at a time. She’s very sensitive right now from the anesthesia.” Helen gave the team a smile before walking off.
Everyone looked at Wanda as she gave them a nod. Of course she had to go in first. You and Wanda may have been oblivious to each other’s feelings, but the team wasn’t. It was almost annoying how unaware you two were of how the other person felt.
Wanda quietly made her way into your room and almost let out a sigh of relief as she saw you laying on the table awake. You were trying to reach for a glass of water beside your bed, but the pain in your side made the small task a burden. Wanda quickly made her way to the table and handed you the glass of water. You were startled since you didn’t even hear her enter the room. You took the water from her hands and took a long sip before handing it back to her.
“What’re you doing here?” You asked coldly as you glared at the Sokovian woman. She was shocked at your animosity. You were never like this with her before. “I needed to make sure you were okay. I was worried sick.” Wanda frowned as she pulled a chair up to your bedside and sat in it.
“Oh. Now you suddenly remember I exist? It only took me nearly dying for you to notice me again.” You knew you weren’t being fair. You guys were just best friends and she was entitled to hang out and be with whoever she wanted. But the part of you that loved her and longed for more took over.
“Y/N. I’m sorry I haven’t been around as often. I got caught up hanging out with Vision when I should’ve been there for you.” Wanda’s eyes softened as she stared at your face. She missed you so much. She may have seen you around the compound, but she hasn’t been this close to you in what felt like decades.
“Yeah. You got caught up with Vision. Why don’t you just go back to him now. I’m fine.” You stubbornly spoke as you tore your eyes away from Wanda and stared out the window in front of your bed.
Wanda made a ballsy move and grabbed your hand in here. Thankfully, you didn’t move it away. “Y/N. I don’t care about Vision, I care about you. I love you and I mean that in more than a friendly way.” At Wanda’s words, your head snapped back to her as you looked over her features for any indication of a lie; you didn’t find any.
“I was spending time with Vision to try and forget my feelings for you. That obviously backfired and only solidified what I already knew I felt. I’m sorry it took such a terrible situation for me to finally grow the balls to tell you this. I love you Y/N.” Wanda squeezed your hand tightly as she stared at you full of love and adoration.
You were speechless. As cliche as it sounds, this was what you’ve wanted since the moment you laid eyes on her. She said the three words you’ve been longing to hear spill from her mouth. She loved you too.
“I love you too, Wanda. I’m sorry. I thought you had a thing for Vision and I let jealousy and insecurity get the better of me.” You looked down in shame as you tried to pull your hand out of Wanda’s hold, but she only gripped it tighter.
“Don’t be sorry. I completely understand. I’m so glad your okay and I’m so unbelievably happy that you feel the same way.” Wanda smiled brightly at you as you smiled right back. You guys must’ve looked like maniacs with your big, cheesy smiles, but you didn’t care.
Wanda began to slowly lean towards you. You attempted to meet her in the middle, but only ended up wincing in pain as you were reminded of your impressive stab wound. Wanda let out a laugh.
“Let me handle it, moya lyubov (my love).” Wanda said before closing the gap between you both and giving you a heated, desperate kiss. All the pent up emotions that you both had been withholding from each other were coming to light through this kiss. You guys were interrupted by the door swinging open abruptly and the sound of someone clearing their throat.
You both jumped apart as you cringed at the sting of your injuries. You turned to the door and caught sight of the team standing at the door with shit eating grins on their face.
“Sorry to interrupt you, lovebirds. But we wanted to check on Y/N too. Cho gave us the clear to come in now.” Natasha smirked at yours and Wanda’s flustered states.
“Pay up, Barnes.” Sam said as he held his hand out to Bucky, who groaned before placing 50 dollars in his hand. You and Wanda stared at the two confused, Bucky took notice of this and decided to fill you both in.
“We made a bet on when you two would get together. I said in the next two months, he said in the next two weeks. He won.” Bucky gave you both a shy, almost embarrassed smile.
Everyone in the room laughed, making you and Wanda turn even more red than before. You didn’t care about the inevitable, endless teasing you would have to endure after today. You would deal with the comments forever as long as it meant Wanda was by your side. You once thought that she didn’t feel the same, and you were so glad you were proven wrong. Sometimes, love can be requited after all.

Because you are a fantastic writer, and because I simply adore what you write, how about a continuation to the "Wukong is once again being an idiot and lying to everyone" prompt? And this is an open prompt! You can take this and go absolutely bonkers with it!
THE POWER YOU HAVE GIVEN ME SHALL NOT GO UNDERUTILIZED. This is a follow up to these two previous fills and I am just going off about what I think would be an interesting way to continue into season 3 at this point.
Warning: UH... Sun Wukong is not doing too great. Mild descriptions of his hidden injuries, Wukong is still immortal but what he hid would be very bad for people who are not.
"He's burning up," Pigsy said with a hiss as he pulled his hand away from Wukong's forehead. "Why is he burning up? What even happened to him!? He didn't look like this an hours ago, ain't he immortal-"
"Yeah, but not invincible," MK interrupted with a shake in his voice, watching as Sandy checked on his mentor's newly revealed injuries. "Not entirely anymore. He-he'll probably be fine! No, he will be fine, but he's-shit." He took in a shaky breath, trying to stand on legs that had long since fallen asleep in their awkward position holding his mentor's head off the hard floor. "I'll explain later, we need to see how bad he is now!"
He jumped, feeling a soft touch against his shoulder. Mei had knelt beside him at some point and it wasn't until she reached over to brush her thumb against his cheek that he realized he had started crying at some point.
The chef looked at him with an odd expression at MK's revelations, almost looking like he wanted to say something in anger before shaking his head and standing instead.
"You're right," he said as he turned to Sandy. He didn't need to ask the largest of the group anything, watching as he carefully scooped the Monkey King into his arms and headed off into what they had designated as "the med bay" with Tang following close by. "But you're gonna tell us exactly what that you mean by 'not entirely invincible' on the way, no more of this waitin to talk business! And we're going to walk there calmly."
MK couldn't find it in himself to argue.
~
"Well, shit," Pigsy sighed after MK rushed through the conversation he had shared with his mentor, pinching the bridge of his snout with a sigh. "That's... bad. That explains a whole lot about a lot of stuff, like how he managed to get himself caught on New Years, at least... You're sure he's still immortal?"
"Yeah," MK nodded, leaning into the grip Mei had on his shoulder as they walked. "Yeah, he made it a point to insist he still couldn't die."
"That's... good, right?" Mei offered with a chuckle, her usual exuberance seeming shaken up after seeing the state of the immortal monkey. "That means he'll get better!"
They paused at the entrance to the med bay, really more a spare bedroom they had stocked all the medical supplies Sandy apparently hoarded into, and MK gulped. He thought over Wukong's words, trying to find any piece he could to pick it apart. See exactly what, if anything, may have been just more half truths... he didn't want to believe he was still hiding things, not after that display of dropping the glamor. But MK himself had claimed he would explain everything to the others before... and lied still... and he was more like Sun Wukong than he first realized.
"I-I think so," he finally settled on an answer as they walked in, Sandy's back being the first sight they were greeted with. He could see the bottom half of Wukong's legs and feet, and Tang standing on the opposite side of the bed, as they were doing... something. "He said I was half invincible so... maybe he's still half himself? But he said they'd 'probably heal eventually' so..."
"Maybe he just meant they wouldn't scar!" Mei offered with a smile, moving to grip MK's hand. "Come on... we can't stop thinking about the good outcomes now..."
He turned, looking at his best friend. Her smile was off, uncertain, dark circles under her eyes from lack of sleep. None of them had slept well the last two nights. But her eyes, despite the uncertainty they shared with her smile, were as bright and hopeful as ever.
"Yeah..." MK said with a small smile.
"As much as we'd appreciate the help," Tang said suddenly, moving from behind the bed to stand before them. He had removed his scarf and robe, something that looked bizarre and wrong outside of seeing him in his sleep wear, and instead wore a simple tank top and his regular pants. He had gloves on... already spotted in red. "This room is a little cramped with all five of us and a bed."
"I'll go make us food," Pigsy said immediately, laying a hand on MK's back as he addressed Tang. "We don't gotta eat it when it's finished it's just... gonna be ready for when you're done, ok?"
MK couldn't help but smile a bit. Pigsy didn't just make food and let it sit, not normally. The only other time he could ever remember him doing that was after... DBK. After they volunteered to help clean up the city from the damage his possession caused. He'd made pots and pots of noodles and soup and plates of side dishes and buns and just kept them warm for when anyone came by to eat them. He stayed in his shop, waiting and handing out what he could.
He never once complained about the excess from the last batches, offering them for free to the first few customers the next day if they wanted it.
"Thanks, Pigsy," Tang said with a tired smile. "I think everyone is going to appreciate that."
"I'll finish the ship upkeep Sandy and I were doing," Mei offered, smiling at Sandy when he looked over his shoulder. "I've got a pretty good handle on the specifics by now."
"I trust you," Sandy said with a smile, the first thing he had said the entire time he'd joined them in the kitchen, and turned back to what he was doing.
There was an awkward silence as Tang started grabbing supplies from a cabinet to deposit on a nearby table and Pigsy and Mei turned to MK.
"I'm staying," he said firmly, but nothing could hide the shaking in his hands. "Just... I have to know how bad he is."
"OK," Pigsy said, and they made their way out before Mei turned back inside.
"When he wakes up? Give him one of these for me," she said before making a face and leaving in the opposite direction.
There was just enough of a chuckle that escaped him that MK thought he would be able to do that.
"Are you sure you want to see this?" Tang asked, far softer in tone than he had been before. "Sandy and I were already taking stock of his injuries and... MK, they're not good."
"Yeah, I'm sure," he insisted, taking in a calming breath. "I need to know exactly how angry I need to be at him."
His father figure didn't laugh, but there was amusement in his eyes as he returned back to where he was. "Alright, then you're going to need to help by handing me everything I ask for."
They settled into silence after that, and MK watched and Tang and Sandy worked to check on the unconscious immortal in the bed.
They had stripped off his robe, leaving him only in the pants he wore underneath it. He looked... he looked much worse without it on.
In addition to his eye (which seemed to have been the only hidden injury to have already healed as much as it may have) and the tear in his ear (which seemed to have at least been partly treated by himself already) his torso was littered with little cuts and scrapes. Sandy had rolled up the legs on his pants, one remaining upright and MK could see the slight swell of his knee from some kind of internal injury (probably muscular). His tail and arms were also similarly injured, one nasty gash in particular close to the end of the tail that had gotten almost as much treatment as his ear.
But on his side... there was sloppy bandaging slowly growing redder.
"Sandy, help me get this off him," Tang said, holding out his hand. "Scissors, please."
MK jolted, getting what Tang requested from the pile of stuff, watching as he carefully cut away the wrapping.
Tang winced as he finally lifted the dressing from Wukong's side, but did his model best to look as impassive as possible. There was a sizeable gash on it, large enough that Tang's entire hand barely covered it lengthwise, that had poorly treated with the lopsided gauze and bandages (probably stolen from this very room after he allowed them to treat his visible injuries). Blood had seeped through it, all fresh, and it was most likely reopened upon his fall. It looked... wrong. Not the way it should. The fur around it had been either ripped out or had fallen out and the skin was inflamed and angry.
"... no wonder he's burning up, this is becoming infected," he said evenly, detected, leaning over to look at the supplies he took from the medicine cabinet. "Sandy, I'm going to need your help moving him. MK?" He turned to the young man, face softening as he saw how pale his face had gotten at the revelations before him. "MK, I heard what you were telling Mei and Pigsy earlier. Mei's probably right, he'll be ok. OK?"
MK wanted to believe he had been, he'd been so honest after he told him to stop lying, but... but he still couldn't help but worry his mentor was still hiding more. And he felt so guilty thinking that. But he shook his head, dispelling the thoughts in his head.
"OK... what do you need?"
"Let's start with antiseptic. We need to clean this as quickly as possible."
~
It took longer than MK had hoped. And Sun Wukong had only barely stirred the entire time. Whether it was from the infectious fever or from exhaustion from using his remaining powers while sick he didn't know, but the most of a reaction they got him from was a sharp gasp and a twitch while cleaning the worst of his wounds.
Aside from that... nothing. He remained still, even as Sandy moved him without any effort and guided Tang through the medical stuff he wasn't sure how to handle.
MK knew Tang had some first aid training but this was much more than he expected him to pull off... he supposed he was learning a lot.
After a while Tang didn't need Sandy's help to move him anymore and the massive man shot MK an apologetic look before leaving. MK assumed he had left to wash up, and he did, but he eventually returned completely cleaned up with a hot cup of tea. It was the same flavor as the one he never got to finish during his conversation earlier.
He ruffled MK's hair after the young man gratefully took it, making Wukong more comfortable on Tang's instruction and pulling the covers over everything but one arm before saying something about needing to give Mei some tea as well, before leaving the three of them alone again. MK thought that, maybe, the sight of the Monkey King as he was was somehow making him... uncomfortable. No, not uncomfortable.
Sad.
He didn't say anything.
"He looked... almost fine when he saved me..." MK said after a long sip of his tea and a long silence of watching Tang handle everything else on his own, trying to squeeze his cup. Just like when he had tried before, it stayed firm. "He wasn't hurt then, not by LBD, so... he'd been keeping up those illusions since before he came. How long was he hurt?"
"There isn't really a way for us to know," Tang admitted, wrapping the fresh gauze around the king's arm as carefully as he could manage. It wouldn't have mattered if he wasn't careful, Wukong didn’t stir a bit. "It could have been hours... could have been days. With how quickly his eye healed vs his gash it's hard to tell. But my guess would be hours, given when you... when..." He trailed off, a shudder running through him. "He was actively giving you his powers, yeah? Maybe... he was giving you some of his healing abilities. Or maybe something else hurt his eye long before everything else. We just don't know."
"I think that was from Macaque," MK said with a wince, knowing he was going to have to explain more about who Macaque was eventually. "He said LBD has him under her control and he has the same injury on the opposite eye."
Tang froze for a half a second, the shine of the overhead lights on his glasses keeping Mk from seeing just what kind of expression he had. But he simply nodded, finishing up his work.
"We'll just... have to hope he'll be able to give us some better information when he wakes up," Tang said with a shrug as he removed his gloves. "This is all probably a mystery even to him... I'm going to wash up... will you be alright alone?"
"Yeah."
That was a lie, but he felt at least this one was warranted.
Because even if he wouldn't be fine he didn't want to leave.
~
It was nearly 11 hours before Sun Wukong opened his eyes again, though he didn't realize that at the time.
The morning sunlight was just barely shining through the window to the med bay, and he wondered for a moment why one of his eyes seemed to ache at the light and a tear rolled down his cheek from the strain at trying to see.
Then he remembered that he couldn't see out of it anymore. And the conversation with MK. And... passing out. In the kitchen.
This was definitely not the kitchen floor, which was bad. What he was laying on was soft and had something else laying on top of him. Which meant he had been moved to a bed.
Which meant he had been unconscious for more than a minute, which was the exact opposite of what he wanted.
He tried to move his left arm to cover his eye, but found something... holding it down. And with a little effort he moved his head, looking over to the side.
MK was slouched over on a chair, nearly face down on the blanket that covered him and holding his hand. In his other hand there was a comic book of some kind, horribly bent by his own face.
He had dark circles, much darker than he had the night before, under his eyes and there was a dried wetness on his cheeks that made Wukong's chest hurt at the sight.
He'd messed up... again. He shouldn't have held up the illusion, not for that long. He should have let it fall the moment they hit the drone and been honest instead of insisting that he go on his new Journey to the West on his own. Or at least let it fall the next day, when they questioned why he was so tired. So quiet. Why he was so still and wasn't running around the ship like they expected (the pulled muscle in his knee, which he very much noticed was tightly compressed by either a sleeve or a wrap, being the main culprit along side... that injury).
He sighed, doing his best to remove his hand from his student's carefully before gently resting it on his head and ruffling the hair there.
"...'m sorry, MK," He said tiredly. "No more secrets, I promise."
"You better mean that promise you asshole."
Wukong yelped and jumped, yelping again when it sent a jolt of pain down his side. "YOu're AwAKe!?"
MK sat up, almost smiling at the way his mentor sounded but holding it back. "Yeah... I kinda passed out after a while, but I woke up like... an hour ago? I've just been trying to get as much rest as I can, even if I'm not actually sleeping."
"That's... good," Wukong said with a nod, the way MK described the time frame feeling familiar. "So you saw... everything?"
"Everything."
"Well, shit."
"That's exactly what Pigsy said when I told him what happened," Mk said with a chuckle, reading over to grab a packet of some kind and a glass of water. "Tang gave me very specific instructions to make you take all of this. Or else."
"Or else... what?" Wukong chanced, raising an eyebrow.
"I dunno, I always took the medicine he gives me with that threat so I never got to find out," MK shrugged. "Pigsy says it's not worth finding out."
"I'll take his word for it," Wukong said with a sigh. It was probably best to take whatever it was regardless of threats, he could feel his fever still and he did not want to keep having to fight that off. So he took the medicine, a mixture of pills and some kind of powder MK mixed into his drink that made it taste oddly way too sweet and sour at the same time, and sighed as he closed his eyes again for a moment.
They sat in silence for only a minute before he spoke again.
"Your friends... did all this?" He gestured to himself, reaching up to feel the odd dressing on his ear.
"Tang and Sandy did," MK explained, and went on to tell him what happened. How they treated him. How Pigsy had food waiting for him now that he was awake. How MK stayed by his side just in case.
"Oh, and Mei wanted me to give you this," MK said before pausing, glowering at him in a way that looked odd on his student's face but probably would have looked horrifying on Mei.
"Oh... I made her that mad huh?"
"I think everyone is kinda angry at you to some degree," MK admitted before holding his mentor's hand again. "But... mostly we were worried. You're my mentor, and a part of our little group now. That's what we do. Worry about each other."
Sun Wukong felt another tear slip out of his injured eye, but not from strain.
It had been so long since anyone... worried about him.
He didn't know how much he missed knowing he was cared about like that.

it's late night writing hours my guys. so here's a little bit of what happens before and after Echo gets absolutely wrecked by a cafeteria tray in Aftermath
2.6k words ~ CW: PTSD/panic attacks/medical trauma
For a glorious moment, Omega revels in the chaos she had started. She isn't quite sure what foodstuffs make up the greasy loafs that are served in the trooper's mess hall. Whatever they are, they make a satisfying splat noise when hitting armor, and get quite a bit of air when thrown.
Now, the revolting loafs are sailing through the air from every direction. Omega ducks behind Hunter as he decks one of the clones clear across the table. His other hand reaches back to lightly pat her upper arm, as though to make sure she's still there. Her heart soars at the gesture, and she grins as wide as her face allows while jumping on the table to chuck another handful of food at a trooper winding up to punch Echo. It smacks him in the cheek, distracting him long enough for Echo to land a left hook of his own.
Crosshair is still seated, ducking out of the way of projectiles while continuing to shovel food into his mouth. Omega watches with great amusement as Echo is kicked backwards— straight onto Crosshair's tray. His face begins cycling through the stages of grief, and ends on anger. She can't help but giggle at him slamming his fist on the table and whipping his ruined tray like a frisbee, hitting three separate troopers in the process. Though he seemed hesitant to engage earlier, he lunges at a clone that has Tech in a headlock, sending all three of them in a tangled heap.
Omega's adrenaline is pumping, heartbeat in her ears as she takes a running start and throws herself onto the shoulders of a clone. The room blurs as he whirls her around, hands trying grab her small arms. When he can't seem to whip her off, the clone suddenly bends forward at the hips, bucking Omega down onto the table. He obviously didn't expect her to be so light because she slips from his grasp and slides toward the end of the table, the air getting pushed out of her lungs. She lies still for a few seconds, breathing heavily.
What she's above makes her adrenaline high suddenly vanish. In the window that overlooks the cafeteria, Lama Su glares down at the food fight. Standing next to him is a military officer— high ranking by the looks of him. He sneers at the flying food and the troopers, saying something to Lama Su with his lip curled in disgust. She's seen his expression before on the faces of others that come to tour the facility. People revolted or offended by the very idea of clones. They're the type of people that seem little too interested in the decommissioning process. Omega has not idea who this is, but he looks official and that gives her a bad feeling.
With her breath back in her chest she rolls to her stomach just in time to see Echo sitting on the floor in the midst of the fighting. He also stares up at the officer and Lama Su, disgust across his own pale face. Does he know him? she wonders.
But as he is distracted by their spectators, the clone he knocked to the ground picks up an abandoned tray and raises it above his head.
"Echo, watch out!" Tech yells, reaching out to the cybernetic clone, but getting tackled to the ground before he can do anything. Omega's eyes widen in horror as the trooper puts his entire strength behind the tray as it swings, slamming into the side of Echo's head.
"Echo, no!" Omega screams as he pitches to the side, eyes already closed and mind dead to the world before he even hits the ground. She quickly presses a button on her commlink that alerts medical to her location and jumps off the table to weave through the troopers that have been momentarily distracted by the jarring sound of a metal tray hitting cybernetic implants.
Tech has fought his way to Echo's side, two fingers pressed against his neck as he yells out his name. The rest of the Bad Batch has taken notice of their fallen brother now, and suddenly the entire atmosphere turns serious. Wrecker isn't laughing anymore as he picks up clones and literally throws them out of the way to clear a path. Hunter and Crosshair, who were displaced to the other side of the caf, now run across the top of the tables, landing punches and throwing trays without breaking stride. Tech has hoisted Echo over his shoulder as the rest of their squad form a protective circle facing outward. Omega slips behind Hunter, unable to take her eyes off Echo's unresponsive face.
"We need to get him out of here," Tech says, his eyes flickering to every one of the cafeteria entrances. Probably doing a calculation of some sort for the quickest way to the med wing.
"Medical is on their way, we can meet them in the corridor," Omega offers, but the others don't seem to process that she's even there. She cowers at Wrecker's side, anxiety that they're upset with her eating away at her heart.
"Keep tight, let's move," Hunter says, and they all seem to know exactly what that means. Wrecker, Hunter, and Crosshair flank Tech on both sides and at his back as they run toward the exit.
They nearly pass the medical droid rushing toward the caf with a stretcher.
"Wait!" she yells, louder this time. Even if they're mad at her, at least she can try and make it up to them. This time, they actually listen to her. "This stretcher is for Echo,"
The boys look at one another and then seem to accept this. Tech gently places his unconscious brother on the stretcher as Nala Se comes rushing around the corner. The medical droid wastes no time and performing a quick scan.
"CT-1409 preliminary assessment: head trauma resulting in loss of consciousness. Patient is stable but require further testing."
"Echo isn't going to like that," Wrecker mutters.
Nala Se's blank eyes flicker from the unconscious clone to a food-covered Omega a she comes to a stop at the foot of Echo's stretcher. The medical assistant can already tell she is in for a big lecture after this stunt.
"Take CT-1409 to the medical-wing," the Kaminoan scientist says in her airy voice. "Omega, assist in the transport."
Omega places her hand on the side of the stretcher, avoiding the hard gaze of her mistress. "Yes, Nala Se."
The Kaminoan now looks at each of the others. "All clones involved in the cafeteria incident are required to be assessed for injuries," she says. "You will report to the lower level medical wing immediately."
A weak chorus of "Yes sirs," rings out and the Kaminoan continues down the hall toward the caf.
Omega starts pushing Echo's stretcher toward the medical wing, feeling the heavy footsteps of four shadows trailing behind her. Apparently a direct order wasn't enough for them.
"They won't let you guys in while he's getting tests run." Omega says while staring straight ahead. Looking at them now will fill her with too much shame.
"We're staying with him," Hunter replies as-a-matter-of-factly.
"You'll get in trouble."
"We're already in trouble, what's breaking one more rule?" Wrecker says.
Omega suddenly stops, forcing herself to look at them. They all have varying degrees of worry etched across the faces. She locks eyes with Hunter, hoping she can at least get him on her side. The last thing she wants is to be the reason they get in trouble again. "At least go get your check-up and clean the grease off your armor. If you show up with me, covered in food, then you'll have to change into medical gowns... and I'll get in trouble." Hunter's eyes soften slightly, but she can still see his hesitation. He doesn't want to get her in trouble, but this is also one of his brothers she's telling them to leave. She knows how deep loyalty runs for these men.  "I promise I won't leave his side until you come to see him."
"We'll be back in ten minutes," Hunter says after a heavy sigh. "If he wakes up before then, comm us."
"You got it," Omega nods in understanding. Though the others don't seem too happy about leaving Echo, he gives him a pointed look and their shoulders slouch with compliance. Omega starts pushing the stretcher again and is halfway down the hall when Tech appears at her side.
"Echo does not do very well with medical tests," he explains, staring at Echo's prone figure rather than directly at Omega. "I recommend, from experience, to wait until he is conscious and aware of what is being done to him before performing any procedures outside of contactless scans."
Her eyes wander over the complex configuration of wires and tubes that wrap around Echo's head and body. She looks back to Tech, nodding.
"Thank you for telling me. I will do what I can to make sure he's okay."
Tech gives her a small smile, turning around, but then pausing. "Oh, and when he does wake, he might start swinging. So keep your distance and remove any possible projectiles." With that, he starts jogging after his brothers. She cannot tell if he was joking or not.
Omega lets out a shaky breath, holding back the urge to cry as she pushes Echo into the medical wing. AZ takes over as she ducks into the scrub room to change her soiled clothes.
Somehow trying to stand up for her friends has turned into one of them getting hurt— she didn't want that to happen she just... wanted to show them she was on their side. For a little while she did feel that incredible rush of belonging. But was it worth landing Echo in the medical bay?
Of course not. They'll never let me be one of them now.
It was dumb. Provoking a room full of troopers that already have it out for the Bad Batch was a thoughtless act. Nala Se is no doubt going to remind her of that and use it keep her sequestered from now on.
Omega emerges in fresh clothes as AZ is completing the brain scan. Echo is still unconscious.
"Is he gonna be alright, AZ?"
AZ's bug eyes always make him look like he's pitying whoever he's looking at. "CT-1409's"
"Echo," Omega interrupts him. "You can call him Echo."
The droid pauses, taking a moment to process that request.
"Patient CT-1409, a.k.a. Echo's scans are clear of skull fractures or bone contusions. My preliminary assessment is that he has sustained a mild concussion consistent with blunt force trauma. He will require a brain tissue scan to ensure there is no bleeding or clotting,"
"Good," Omega lets out a sigh of relief. "That's good."
"Your services will not be required further, Omega. You are free to return to your assigned duties."
She glares at the droid, crossing her arms over her chest. "I'm staying, AZ. I promised the guys."
"But mistress Nala Se summoned you to the sub-level medical wing. You must go."
"No!" There's no way she's taking orders from a AZ. Even if he is her friend. "I'm staying here until he wakes up."
AZ shakes his head, his unexpressive droid face somehow looking disappointed. He hovers over to Echo to begin performing the tissue scan, and Omega goes to look for a blanket or something to make their patient more comfortable.
The distinct whirring of the scan is interrupted by a sharp gasp. Omega turns as Echo starts to flail.
"No! Get them off," he gasps, his arms swinging but hitting nothing. There's a clouded look in his panicked eyes as they frantically search the room.
"But my tests are not yet complete," the droid tries to explain while continuing to move closer. Omega is already running across the room, shoving AZ to the side.
"Echo, Echo, it's—" his unfocused gaze shifts from the corner filled with bacta tanks to her. "It's okay. It's me, Omega." His chest rises and falls as though he's been running for miles, and she raises her hands so he can clearly see them. "I understand." As his breathing slows, she realizes that AZ must have attached a heart and respiration monitor to Echo while she was changing. She slowly reaches down to pull them off of him. "I don't like being hooked up to their machines either."
A few brief memories float passively through her mind. Wires and needles and tubes coming from various places on her body. The sticky feeling of bacta on her skin and gathering between her fingers and toes. Silent tears streaming down her face every time she saw the instrument cart was full for the day.
Omega releases him from the monitors and looks up at him. Echo is still coming out of his panic, but he seems calmer now. He looks at her as though she has seven eyes and two noses, but at least he finally sees her.
"Hello CT-1409," AZ pipes up.
"His name is Echo," Omega reminds him.
"My name is AZ-34521189..." as he drones on with his serial identifier, Echo and Omega exchange glances. She offers him a comforting smile and though he doesn't really react, he does scoot himself further from AZ and closer to her, which is good enough for now. When AZ finishes, his body spins around on its axis, and Wrecker's voice suddenly rings out through the med wing.
"Ha! Told you he's alive!" The rest of the squad, now clean of grease, stroll in. "You owe me two credits," Wrecker says, jabbing a finger at Crosshair. They seem surprisingly relaxed, most of them nodding or even smiling at Omega as they gather around the foot of Echo's bed. The fact they even acknowledge her is unexpected.
AZ turns to the rest of them to give his assessment. In the mean time, Omega turns her attention back to Echo. His eyes aren't glazed over anymore but he still seems uneasy. Definitely uncomfortable sitting on a medical table. Omega has overheard the rumors of what happened on to him— how Echo was an ARC trooper that got captured and experimented on. It's obvious from his chemically bleached skin and the complex assortment of cybernetics that he's been through a certain kind of hell. But judging from how he reacted to a simple scan and heart monitor, she cannot imagine how bad it must have really been.
She decides to take the risk and lays her hand gently over his. His wide brown eyes look from the rest of his squad to her hand atop his, and then finally to her. Echo gives her an appreciative nod and a slight smile. Warmth fills her body again, stronger than it was when they were joining her in her food fight pursuits.
The young medical assistant looks to the others now, only to find Hunter has been ignoring AZ's grand reveal that they are genetically defective and is instead watching her. The sergeant's lips form a curious half-smile as he watches her pull her hand away from their injured brother. The giddy warmth in her chest builds even more. They aren't mad at her after all. In fact, she gets the feeling that they might even like her. Or, at least, acknowledge her existence-- which is progress from earlier.
Omega realizes that maybe grand gestures shouldn't be her approach in trying to get them to notice her. Maybe just showing them how much she truly cares about them is enough.
Definitely no more food fights... unless one of the others is the one to initiate it, of course. If that's the case, Omega will be the second one to throw the greasy Kamino caf loafs.

A New Chapter (Echo x reader)
{masterlist}
Warnings: It’s implied that the reader has depression, some angst sprinkled in
.....................................
When Rex commed you to come to Anaxes on the next medical transport - you’d expected the worst. You were trying to prepare yourself to hear more bad news. You’d expected to be told that Rex had lost another one of his closest brothers and one of your dearest friends. You’d already lost so many...Echo, Hardcase, Tup, Fives..Echo’s death destroyed you first and left room for every following death to slowly chip away at your resolve. You feared that hearing you’d lost Kix, Jesse, or Cody might just do you in before you could begin to be there for Rex.
So, you frantically scrambled to steel yourself before the transport landed - keeping a death grip on the handle by your head to keep your self grounded. You knew that your fellow medics, clone and nat-born alike, were silently questioning you. As the head nurse you were expected to be composed, cool-headed, great under pressure, and a genuine calming presence. For you to be nervous enough for it to be reflected in your shifting stance and death grip was disconcerting.
As the transport initiated its landing sequence you took in one long steadying breath and braced yourself for whatever news awaited you beyond the doors. They opened with a hiss and your fellow medics immediately sprung into action unloading supplies and gurneys while you waded through the sea of activity in search of a certain captain. He was waiting for you by the entrance to the barracks. With his helmet on, it was harder to discern what he was feeling but for the most part he stood tall and proud in a perfect soldier stance with his hands clasped behind his back. He was busily conversing with someone you couldn’t see. You were confused now - you’d seen Rex after a heavy loss. His shoulders always sagged, his whole form took on a heaviness to it that was only ever abated with time and the comfort of some good wine you’d often smuggle in for him. He was never this...normal. Rounding a few stacked crates revealed to you that the person Rex was talking to was actually three people consisting of Jesse (thank the maker) and two clones you barely recognized as clones.
After a loud clearing of your throat you called out to him. Rex turned to you and removed his helmet in one fluid motion and you were surprised to see him beaming at you. “Vod’ika!” He chirped and started walking towards you with Jesse in tow whilst ignoring the intrigued looks of the other two clones - one had really long hair and a headband wrapped around his crown and the other, significantly shorter, peered at you with large eyes hidden behind a pair of blocky glasses. You met Rex in the middle and he quickly pulled you into a one armed hug that you barely returned thanks to being caught so off guard. “Glad you’re here.” He muttered next to your ear before retreating so Jesse could also pull you into a quick hug.
“I’d say I’m glad to be here,” you began as you pulled away from the arc trooper, “but I don’t know why I am.” You finished with a pointed look at Rex that told him to start explaining.
His smile fell a bit, though it didn’t completely disappear, “It’s...a long story and it’s better to just show you. C’mon.” He swung his arm for you to follow him, already walking towards the barracks. You hesitated, casting a confused look at Jesse who just offered you an impish grin in reply before strutting after the captain. With a steadying sigh you followed after the two kama wearing clones.
You passed many troopers as the captain and arc trooper led you further inside the barracks, most from the 501st, some from the 212th, a lot from the 187th, and at least two who you couldn’t identify as being from any legion but they were wearing the same armor as the other two who had been talking to Rex and Jesse when you arrived. The taller of the two (the much taller of the two - was he even a clone? Or was he a Natborn that vaguely resembled the millions of brothers?) watched you walk away with his one functioning eye and a poorly hidden whisper to his friend. “’Think that’s the gal he’s been askin’ about?”
“Looks like ‘er.” The smaller of the duo answered in a grating voice.
Your brow furrowed - a lot of clones tended to ask about you given your tendency to move between legions and battalions but it was rare that they talked about you to the extent that someone who’d never met you could recognize you. If you were honest, it was a little unnerving. But, despite your best effort to keep the thoughts at bay, you were briefly reminded of a conversation you’d once had with Fives.
“He talks abou’ you a lot, y’know.” The newly promoted arc trooper slurred as he heavily leaned against you. He vaguely gestured in the direction of his aforementioned brother where he leaned against the bar, armor glinting in the low lighting, after he timidly offered to get you a new drink. You’d protested, telling him it was his big night, you’d get the drinks but he took off before you could even get to your feet. “Just too shy to do anything but that.”
“What does he say?” You asked the drunken trooper quietly as your pulse began to speed up. You, admittedly, hadn’t taken much interest in Echo at first - you thought him boring and stiff - but recently he’d been challenging your perception of him. And you’d be a liar if you said you hadn’t started to admire the capable, quick-witted, snippy, but kind, sensitive, and charming soldier.
“Says ‘e likes you, wish he could work up the nerve to talk to you, thinks you’re the prettiest damn medic in the GAR, thinks you’re a kriffin’ genius...and, ‘m pretty sure he’s in love with you.” Fives took another hearty swig of his drink, shutting up for the first time in what seemed like hours, which gave you enough time to consider his words. While you didn’t want to put all your faith in the drunken mess of an explanation Fives had given you - he did know his twin the best and he’d never lied to you. Maybe - you took another good long look at Echo - just maybe, - you saw him take a deep breath as the bartender handed him your drinks, almost like he was trying to psych himself up - you’d take a chance. You met Echo’s gaze as he turned around, sending him a fond smile that he sheepishly returned.
Rex led you to a separated part of the med bay primarily meant for rehabilitation where he finally came to a halt just before the door. “Now,” he began as he turned to you, Jesse stopped at your side with crossed arms and a strange, conspiring smile on his face, “I want you to walk between Jesse and I.” Rex ordered quietly as if scared of being overheard.
Your brow furrowed immediately. “Why?”
“In case ya faint.” Jesse answered back.
With a roll of your eyes that could rival the likes of Wolffe’s, you turned to the ARC trooper. “Jesse, I’m a field medic whose spent most of her career on the front lines dealing with a menagerie of injuries. I’m sure whatever it is, I can handle it.”
“Be prepared to eat those words.” Jesse muttered under his breath in retort but you elected not to respond, instead, you turned your attention back to Rex who was staring at you uncertainly.
“All the same, let me go in first and make sure he’s ready.” Rex offered gently with a softly placed hand on your shoulder. He had an odd look in his eyes - somewhere between apprehensive, compassionate, and elated - as he looked at you.
“You’re the captain...” You muttered, suddenly feeling on edge. Jesse must have noticed your tense form for he softly grabbed your hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. Rex nodded to Jesse then to you before strolling in to the room. The door slid into place behind him leaving you and Jesse for a few minutes. The ARC trooper didn’t let go of your hand till Rex came back and gestured with a nod of his head for the two of you to come in. Rex went back in first, followed by Jesse, with you taking up the rear. The air was strangely tense as you followed behind the two clone troopers so you couldn’t stop your mind from preparing itself to see the worst. While not uncommon for you to visit patients in the middle of rehabilitation it wasn’t why you were part of the GAR. It was just something you’d started doing after serving with the clone forces for so long. But never before had you been nervous. Without warning, Jesse stopped right in front of you causing you to bump into his back. Instead of laughing at you like you thought he would, Jesse angled his body enough for you step in front of him and gently encouraged you to do so with a hand between your shoulder blades.
You came to a halt in front of him and the ARC trooper kept his hand where it was as if trying to steady you. Seriously, why were they being so weird? You still couldn’t see very far into the room - only the equipment shoved against the walls closest to the door - thanks to Rex who stood in front of you. There was no talking. Rex dipped his head at whoever was in the room and stepped to the side.
Before you was a trooper dressed in red fatigues. His frame was thin, cheeks sunken in, and his skin unnaturally pale. And he was missing an arm which had been replaced with a computer interface arm one would expect to see on an R-series. His head had also been shaved which revealed small, port like protrusions out of his skull. And upon glancing your eyes downward, you noticed that the trooper’s legs had been replaced with mechanical ones. Not to be flippant but he looked like he’d been through hell and back.
With a deep breath, you let a mollifying smile slip onto your lips and a sympathetic look fill your eyes. “Hello,” you kept your voice soft too, just in case the trooper was nervous, “My name is Dr. L/n. What’s yours?”
His brow furrowed and it was only now, after his expression had changed, that you noticed that it had once been almost hopeful. Now, he looked confused. Or more accurately, conflicted. His pale brown eyes were frantically darting back and forth as if searching your face for an answer to a question that was left unasked. “I-it’s me.” He finally spoke in a frail voice. You cocked your head to the side. That was adimttedly an odd name but who were you to judge? Just as you were opening your mouth to speak, he continued. “Cyare, it’s me.” Your mouth clamped shut as the first word slipped from him as the instinct to snap briefly took over. Only one person got to call you that.
“Trooper, forgive my bluntness but-”
“Meshurok.” Hearing that word made it feel as though ice had been injected into your body. Shivers ran up and down your spine and goose bumps formed all over. No one had called you that since...Echo.
“How...?” You felt your body start to fall back only to be stopped by a hand between your shoulder blades. Jesse was still there and Rex was standing just off to the side. They were both real. But was he...?
“When I first worked up the nerve to ask you out, you were wearing a necklace with a kyanite pendant. I asked you where you’d gotten it and what it was.” The trooper took a careful step forward and you felt your heart begin to speed. “You told me it was gifted to you by a young Twi’lek girl you helped when you were on Ryloth with the 187th.” He took another step. “She’d gifted it to you and told you that it was it represented new beginnings.” You took a step forward, eyes wide. “I asked if I could be a part of your new beginnings.” You took another step forward.
“And I said ‘only if I get to be a part of yours’.” Your voice was wispy, choked with old ghosts. “Echo...” Before you knew it, you were wrapped in his arms. “Echo.” You didn’t care that your voice trembled with barely restrained sobs or that Jesse and Rex were barely three feet away. All you cared about was how familiar he felt - familiar and safe. Home, your mind supplied. “I-I, but the citadel and the ship - I...you...oh god.” You pulled back, almost giving yourself whiplash in the process as your instincts took over. Your hands reached up to gently hold the sides of his face while you reevaluated his appearance. “How did you survive the ship?” Your fingers were busily skimming all the alterations that had most likely been forced onto your cyar’ika. You noticed that his eyelids fluttered closed at the sensation of your fingers on his skin and it made your heart squeeze in both affection and the need to protect him.
“I don’t really know, mesh’la. I just remember trying to take the ship, it exploding, and then waking up being dragged.” Echo whispered, keeping his hand stubbornly fixed on your waist. Behind you there was the sound of the door sliding closed which you guessed was Rex and Jesse making their exit.
“Kriffing droids, how dare they touch you,” At some point in your speedy assessment you started to mutter, “I should go there and tear each one to scraps with my bare hands.”
Echo chuckled and it was enough to bring tears to your eyes, your hand paused just above the computer interface arm. “Who did this to you?” Although it was whispered, Echo heard you clear as day.
He sighed and gently rested his head against yours, “Seps, techno union - they don’t matter.”
“They hurt you - I’m going to find them and kill them myself.”
“I thought your whole thing was ‘do no harm’.” Echo quipped and the smile that followed, though no where near as wide as you were used to, was warm and genuine and enough to pacify you for now.
“I can make exceptions.” You muttered but the fire had died down. Another puff of air brushed against your face - another reminder that Echo really was here.
“Later then.” He pressed his lips against your forehead and drew you closer. You sighed and melted against him, the happiest you’d been in a long time as the first few words of another new chapter formed before your very eyes.

Incompetence

Felix Millstone x Fem. Reader

“Baby, you’re one of the damn finest captains to ever run a ship.”
__
“Welcome back, Captain.” ADA’s computer generated voice rang out in the entrance of The Unreliable.
The captain groaned under her breath as she closed the airlock of the ship behind her. She said a silent thank you to whoever was listening that she made it back in one piece and in relatively good health. She was a little banged up, but nothing a shot of adreno wouldn’t fix. It was her duty to save Halcyon...or at least get it going in the right direction. She knew this very well. Dr. Welles wouldn’t have woken her up from a 70 year hibernation if he didn’t think she had what it took. But this last mission had been a rough one.
Initially, she wasn’t sure if she could afford to spend time on this mission. It was out of the way and where they would have to go was deep into the Monarch wilderness. However, Nyoka had been so hesitant to ask for the captain’s help which showed her how desperate she actually was. This was even more obvious considering that Nyoka hadn’t known the captain very long to be asking for personal favors. It was important to her to visit Hayes’ grave and try to find the rest of her old hunting squad. So, the captain figured it was worth the trip. She knew how important closure could be.
The captain, Nyoka, and Ellie had hiked a ways into Monarch and into the old cave that Nyoka and her previous team had made into a base camp. Sadly, they only found the dead bodies of her beloved friends and ended up putting them to rest once the rogue mantiqueen was taken care of. It was hard on Nyoka especially, but it even got the captain thinking about the current situation. Here she was, a Hope colonist who was thrown into a space pod by some crazed scientist for all she knew with the task of saving an entire colony. She had been asleep for the last 70 years and now she was supposed to hop between planets to save them from turmoil? It was insanity. She was only human and could only handle so much. She was thankful that she had been able to assemble a team along the way.
She met Parvati first. It was just the two of them for a while. She was the first friendly face the captain had met on her journey. She saved Parvati from the destruction of Edgewater and their crooked mayor. The captain desperately needed her engineering skills as well as a sharp mind to keep the ship in order. She was nice company and always willing to lend a hand. She never let her forget how grateful she was.
Vicar Max was a challenge in the beginning. She didn’t like the fact that this esteemed priest had asked her for a favor the moment she met him. She wasn’t sure if his spiritual counseling skills would be beneficial to the team. After all, she needed a gang of intelligence and physical combat skills. Max proved himself through his computer hacking skills which wasn’t something she would’ve expected from a vicar. He grew on her quickly and she was happy to have him around.
SAM was actually the last person she recruited into your party. Honestly if she hadn’t taken the time to deeply search through the late Alex Hawthorne’s spaceship, she never would’ve noticed him. He was stashed away in one of the closets upstairs, so at first she thought he was just used for parts. Once she took the time to get him fixed, he was up and off to work. She didn’t really ask him to be a part of the crew. He sort of just got started on his own. He didn’t say much, but he was a good fighter and kept things spiffy and clean.
At the time she met Ellie, she was in desperate need of a medic. She could only do so much, so having a doctor around was helpful. Ellie had the most secretive background of everybody. She came from one of the wealthiest families in Byzantium and really could’ve had it made. The captain commended her for living the life she wanted to live, even if it meant risking having her own flesh and blood disowning her. She was often the one the captain turned to when she needed to talk, because Ellie would tell it to her straight. She never left a conversation with Ellie still wondering how to handle something.
The captain tended to think that she saved Nyoka’s life. She was a drunk living in Monarch. She had been burned one too many times by the evil things of the world. Captain never judged her for how she chose to cope with her hurt and losses. She had a fiery passion for helping others and bettering the colony. The captain admired her worth ethic. It was her family and friends above all else. She was very loyal to those she cared about. She rarely questioned her captain’s decision making and always backed her up through it all.
Then there was Felix. Oh, wow. When she first met him on Groundbreaker, it was the first time she had stopped in weeks. He had been standing near the landing pad, arguing away with one of the mardets about something sketchy he had done. She had taken the time to stop to speak to him. She immediately noted that he wasn’t shy when it came to a fight. He wasn’t shy when it came to violence. Truthfully, Felix had kind of brushed her off at first. He didn’t seem very interested in joining The Unreliable. So, she moved on.
She completed a few favors for Groundbreaker’s main engineer Junlei Tennyson. Once the business was settled there, the captain decided it was time to set flight. As she was leaving, she saw Felix standing by the entrance of The Unreliable. She was surprised to see him, considering he hadn’t seemed too impressed by her before. He complimented the ship, claiming that she needed him to join her team.
She already knew she was going to say yes. However, she wasn’t going to be seen as a pushover. Because she wasn’t. He was delighted that she had given him a chance. He read his list (literally) of reasons as to why she should hire him. She was amused by him. He interested her. So of course she hired him on the spot.
He was like a kid on Christmas when he set foot on The Unreliable. She later learned that he had never been on a real spaceship. As a matter of fact, Felix had never even left Groundbreaker before. He was born and somewhat raised on Groundbreaker, living in the Back Bays all his life. It was all he knew. He was going to see space for the first time and get to explore new planets. She was his golden ticket to a more exciting life.
It wasn’t long after Felix joined that she grew closer to him. She felt wrong for a while for being so drawn to him. She was his “boss” as he always called her as well as his captain. But at the same time, she was really just his friend that happened to be in command of the ship he now lived on. They were the only real night owls, so they spent a lot of time into the late night hours just chatting. Getting to know each other over a bottle of spectrum vodka and strengthening a personal connection. Soon enough, they were sort of the equivalent of a modern day couple.
The rest of the crew sensed that something was up, but they had yet to officially say anything. The crew didn’t mind. They all agreed that she deserved someone loyal like Felix. They knew she would never favor him over anybody else, because she was always fair.
So, here she was now. She was just plain exhausted and needed some time to wind down. She had originally planned on leaving Monarch and docking at Groundbreaker to get some drinks before turning in. However, the mission had taken longer than expected, so she decided to stay in Stellar Bay and hit up Groundbreaker in the morning to give everybody a day off. They needed it. She entered the control room to deactivate ADA:
“ADA, we’ll head for Groundbreaker in the morning. You can shut down for the night.” She ordered the PC system.
“Docked in Stellar Bay and shutting down, Captain.” She replied before her screen went black.
It was ironic that you always had to tell ADA when to turn off. She couldn’t really turn off, because then the whole ship would go dark.
The captain felt relieved to have made it back safely. For there were a few moments where she had her doubts. She left the control room and climbed the stairs. Everybody was sitting around the table, Nyoka and Ellie looking especially tired. The captain’s eyes flicked over to Felix who was fiddling with the tossball that he always kept in his pocket. He flashed his girlfriend a grin, however it faded into a sympathetic frown when he noted how drained she looked. Everybody else looked at her upon noticing her standing in front of them;
“Hey, guys. Change of plans. We’ll leave in the morning for Groundbreaker. It’s late and quite honestly, I don’t feel like traveling,” She admitted; “Take it easy tonight. Tomorrow will be our off day to piddle around Groundbreaker. Get some rest.”
Everybody agreed happily to a day off and dispersed into their respective sleeping quarters. She rubbed her eyes to keep herself from getting too tired. She still had a few things she needed to do, so she wouldn’t be turning in just yet. She made sure to turn SAM off for the evening. SAM could power down on his own, but he often had the tendency to roam the ship freely during the night. Parvati had been spooked one too many times by SAM walking into her room unannounced.
She felt a hand on her shoulder as she went to approach the stairs to go back down. She looked up to meet Nyoka’s gaze. She had a certain gleam in her eyes past the fog of sleeplessness;
“Thanks for today. I really appreciate it, Captain,” She gratefully said; “I can rest easy now knowing they’re at peace.”
“Of course, Nyoka. Anything for you,” The captain returned with a smile; “Get some sleep. ADA will wake us in the morning.”
Nyoka returned to her room and the captain went back downstairs to her room. Truthfully, she wouldn’t be able to sleep even if she didn’t have work to do. She had too much on her mind. She sat at the long desk across from the bed, thumbing through files and papers that Alex had left behind. He had left piles and piles of reports about all the planets in the colony. She could just ask ADA, but these were personal notes and maps. They were useful, but detailed. It took serious time to go through them. Soon after she had sat down, she heard a voice from behind her;
“Hey, Boss,” Felix said gently tapping on the doorway; “You got time for a nightcap?”
She turned to see him standing there with two cups wrapped in one of his hands. She felt a warmth creep over her at the sight of him. She needed someone to talk to.
“Always,” She said, accepting his request to enter. A goofy smile appeared on his face as he entered and he handed her one of the cups. She thanked him before scolding him; “I told you that you don’t have to call me Boss.”
He shrugged as he took the chair adjacent to her for himself;
“It’s got a nice ring to it. I save Captain for special occasions.” He said sipping whatever was in the cups.
Speaking of, she peered down into the ceramic mug to see a familiar purplish liquid bouncing back your reflection. She smiled softly as she raised the rim to her lips, letting the sweet liquid grace over her taste buds.
“I hope you don’t mind sharing the portion. I know we usually get our own but we’re low on purpleberry juice so I split a bottle between us.” He said sliding down into his chair slightly and entwining one of his legs with hers.
“Oh, that’s totally fine. I’ll be sure to pick some up tomorrow,” She stated, taking another sip; “How were things here today?”
Felix rolled his head from side to side in an attempt to work out any kinks. He laughed shortly;
“Ah, the usual. SAM cleaned every square inch of the ship. Parvati spent all day writing a message to Junlei. Max had his nose in a book all day,” He explained; “I, on the other hand, was actually productive.”
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a carton of cigarettes that he picked up on Scylla. They weren’t his favorite Spacer’s Choice brand of smokes, but they would do. He offered her one first, lighting it for her, and then picking one for himself. She raised a brow at his previous statement, hiding her unconvinced smirk behind the cup;
“Is that so?” She asked for elaboration.
“Yeah! I organized all my tossball cards from my favorite to least favorite. It took me almost all day!” He clamored.
She laughed heartily. Only Felix Millstone would consider that to be productive. However, considering he didn’t get into any actual trouble, she would take that any day. She watched as he brought the cigarette to his lips that were upturned into an amused smile.
“Well, I’m glad you have your priorities straight.” She said sarcastically.
His eyes brightened;
“Hey! At least I didn’t get in a fight with ADA this time. I minded my business,” He defended; “But enough about me. How did it go with Nyoka and Ellie? You ladies seemed extra worn out.”
She sighed, her smile disappearing from her face. His heart did a quick pang in his chest when he saw her demeanor change so quickly. He had wanted to go with her on Nyoka’s detour mission. The captain had told him no, considering he had just gone on the previous one. He always felt that he could save her some grief if he went along on difficult missions.
“It was long. It was hard...mentally and physically. Especially for Nyoka. She was expecting to find at least one of them alive. They were all dead.” She said recalling the overrun cave.
Felix winced at the thought. He had grown up in the Back Bays of Groundbreaker. He had seen his fair share of people get killed, but nobody he really cared about. She took a long drag of her cigarette. Letting the smoke fill her lungs completely.
“Marauders?” Felix asked referring to how they had died.
She shook her head as she released the puff from her chest through her nose.
“We don’t know for sure. We think it was mantipillars. Nyoka seemed sure that there was no way marauders could’ve found that cave.” She explained.
She had agreed with Nyoka’s theory. It had taken some serious navigation to get there and even with Nyoka’s help she still got turned around. She took another sip of her juice, hoping that maybe she’d get sleepy soon. She didn’t want to put her problems onto Felix, because that wasn’t his burden to bear. She knew that he enjoyed listening to her. He cared about her a lot and he was thrilled to hear about her thoughts...even if he didn’t get it. He was more than willing to help where he could.
“How do you feel about it? Now that you’re back and the job is done?” He questioned, leaning forward to be closer to her.
She looked down into her cup, swirling the juice around the sides and letting it splash back into the center. She didn’t want to look at him. That’s when he could really see through her. She felt so vulnerable.
“I feel lost,” She admitted; “I don’t know what I’m doing, Felix.”
He furrowed his brows, cradling his cup in both his hands with his cigarette between his index and middle finger;
“Do any of us really know what we’re doing? I thought you told us to take things step by step?” He asked.
“Well, yeah. I still believe that, but I mean me personally. I’ve been tasked with saving Halcyon from completely falling apart by some man that could be a total fraud for all I know. I feel so incompetent.” She confessed.
A blank stare crossed Felix’s face. Law bless him. He didn’t have the best range of vocabulary.
“I feel like I’m not good at anything I do.” She said defining the word she had just said.
Felix looked shocked at her words. That was crazy. She had been busting it the last several months trying to accomplish her bestowed goal. He had seen her at her best and at her worst. She took everything in stride and gave everything her best shot. She was friendly and kind to those who had good intentions and stone cold to those who took advantage of innocent people. She was a blend of warm and tough. She was the perfect person in his eyes.
“Are you kidding? [Y/N], you’re not at all incontinent.” He said using the wrong word.
She snorted at his horribly wrong use of the word. If only Felix knew what the word he had just said actually meant.
“Incompetent.” She corrected.
He chuckled. She could be such a smart ass.
“Right. Anyways, you’re great at what you do. I’ve seen it myself.” He proclaimed.
Her gaze averted downwards again, not feeling convinced.
“You’re just saying that because you like me.” She said half joking.
“Well, you’re not wrong. I do like you. A lot. But I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it.” He said truthfully; “Baby, you’re one of the damn finest captains to ever run a ship.”
She finally looked at him, taking the cigarette from her lips;
“This isn’t even my ship, Felix. It was a total accident that I ended up on this thing.” She argued.
“It is your ship,” He retorted; “You were assigned to it. You made this ship your own. You gathered your own crew and your own life here. So, you’re wrong. This is your ship.”
He had a point. She did take over the ship without a second thought. She improvised. She was quick thinking on her feet. She overcame. Isn’t that what captains are supposed to do? She finished off her cigarette and the last of her juice. He had gotten through to her enough to make her feel more comfortable. The whole 70 year hibernation had done a number on her emotions.
“It’s my ship,” she repeated; “I am the captain.”
He smiled proudly;
“Damn right you are. I’m proud of you. I’m glad to be your right-hand man.” He beamed.
He kissed the back of her hand, guiding her out of her chair. He disposed of his own cigarette and he tore her away from the desk. Soon enough, she was in bed, curled up next to him. His arm was wrapped around her, keeping her warm and comfortable. He kissed her temple, rubbing her back gently. He wanted her to get a good night of sleep so she could enjoy their day off tomorrow.
“Goodnight, Felix.” She whispered just before falling asleep.
He rested his chin on her head, watching the stars outside the observatory window and into the endless space.
“Night, Captain.”

summary: Red String of Fate Soulmate AU
Soul mates have a red thread tied to each others pinkies that only one of them can see.
You're the Resistance's head medic. You can see the red thread of fate that leads you to your soulmate. Poe doesn't believe in the soulmate / thread theory. You don't agree with his tactics, nor does he approve of yours. Leia and Holdo just really want a win.

SAWBONES
ONE // TANGIBLE
You’d never given much thought to it, too many other obligations and priorities took precedence over where exactly that small, red thread tied around your pinky led.
When you weren’t completely swamped, however, you’d like to see how far your eyes could follow the trail until it seemed to fade, yet still pulled taught by whomever was on the other end. You’d find yourself atop one of the many hills in D’Qar, wishing it was tangible, wishing you could actually pluck and feel the twang of the vibrations across the string. Maybe they could feel it too, wherever they were. They could be anywhere. The galaxy was infinite, and it was slim that people ever discovered their soulmate. Only one could see it, the other one blind until they had developed feelings for the other.
A mechanical whir knocked you out from inside your head. A meddroid was standing to your left, waiting for you to take the chart from its grasp.
“Sorry, FX-7,” you grabbed the stack of papers.
“Engineer Jasti almost blew their left upper appendage off due to a malfunction in the blaster cannon of the x-wing they were working on,” FX-7 informed you.
You blinked at the droid. Left arm, you thought. Just say left arm.
“Bed 5,” the droid finished, walking away.
Flipping through the pages, though you really didn’t have to because Jasti - along with several other engineers - frequented your medbay. You sighed as you pulled back the curtain.
“Again?”
Jasti shrugged. “Blame Dameron. He’s the one who puts these x-wings through hell.”
You rolled your eyes, checking over the bandaging FX-7 had applied. Satisfied, you gave Jasti a bacta-shot just for good measure. She yelped and you threw the needle in the bin.
“I’ve had words with General Organa. Is he scouting for First Order intel or is he just taking them out for the fun of it?”
A snort came from the bed behind you, and you threw back the curtain. Laying in the bed with an arm over his eyes was Yolo Ziff, a pilot in Blue Squadron. Confused, you flipped through the pages in your hand, wondering why you hadn’t seen his name come up.
“Snuck in here for a few seconds of peace, Doc,” he said, arm still over his eyes. “Dameron’s got us practicing escape maneuvers and barrel rolls until we run out of fuel. Even when I’m out of the seat I feel like I’m still piloting.”
You audibly scoffed, handing him a small vial of blue liquid to quell his motion sickness. He took it gratefully as you dimmed the light above his bed.
“The audacity this man has, to have his pilots coming to the med bay just to escape him.” you chewed the inside of your cheeks. “Doesn’t even check on them. I’ve never even met the guy.”
“I’ve seen him maybe twice,” Jasti interrupted your rambling. “When he’s not in an x-wing, he’s in someone’s room. I think it’s Galen, that sweet holographer this week.”
“That was the beginning of this week,” Ziff laughed. “She tried to soulmate trick him the other day. He got so pissed he took off into the hills with BB-8 and came back this morning.”
“Soulmate trick?” You asked.
“He can’t see the thread,” Ziff explained, arm now by his side and making eye contact with you. “Countless women have tried to convince him they can, and theirs leads to him. He doesn’t trust the concept anymore.”
“Can’t you see your thread, doc?” Jasti said quietly.
You looked down at your right pinky, following the thread as it cut through the wall, leading to Maker knows where. The small action was an answer in itself and Ziff let out a low whistle. You don’t know how it got out amongst the Resistance base, and right now you wish you could slingshot whoever it came from into Dathomir.
“I’ve never met someone who could,” he said, now sitting up. “Can you just see yours or everyone else’s too?”
Uncomfortable with the topic, you had busied yourself with organizing the vials and beakers in the medicine cabinet between the two beds.
“Just my own.”
Both Ziff and Jasti seemed to deflate - just a little.
“Do you know who yours is? Have you ever gotten close?” Jasti questioned. You locked the cabinet once you were finished and put both your hands in the pockets of your uniform.
“It sort of disappears after a couple hundred meters
” you shrugged. “I’ve tried to see how long it goes for, but I think I’d need to be in somewhat close proximity to figure it out.”
“How close do you think?”
“Same planet as least,” you reasoned. “Sometimes, I feel a vibration, a pluck from the string that makes me feel like whoever it is is near. I don’t investigate, though.”
“Why not?” both Jasti and Ziff said in unison.
“I’ve got my hands full with injured engineers and runaway pilots,” You replied, grabbing Ziff’s empty vial and tucking Jasti’s chart into the designated spot on the wall above her bed.
“Get some rest. Both of you.”
 ✗ ✗ ✗
Vice Admiral Holdo regarded you with a small smile. Even through the hologram, she put you at ease.
“I’m at about 35% of max occupancy,” you updated her, reading off your list you’d created only an hour ago with the help of FX-7. “Minor scrapes and injuries, nothing bacta and my steady hands can’t handle.” The corners of your mouth pulled upwards.
“Thank you for being our most consistent asset, Doctor. Your work is truly invaluable.”
“One thing, Vice Admiral,” you caught her before she signed off. “I have concerns about the quality of our x-wings and those piloting them. Do these constant missions hold any worth?” You almost winced at your bluntness. Of course, Organa, Ackbar and Holdo herself wouldn’t let Dameron and his squadron joy ride whenever they pleased. Yet, from what you’d heard of Poe Dameron, it seemed as though he could truly get away with whatever he wanted.
Her soft smile remained. “I’m glad you’ve brought this up,” she began. “We’ve recently come into some intelligence that calls for the creation of a true operation. I would like for you to be in attendance, inform the squadron of any risks and avoidances they should be attuned to.”
“I will, gladly. When?”
Upon your response, Leia Organa appeared over Holdo’s shoulder.
“Whenever you get here. I advise you to walk fast,” Leia said with a wicked smile.
Shaking your head, the hologram disappeared and you quickly buttoned your medical coat, making sure you didn’t have any mystery stains on yourself before beginning the trek through the underground hallway into the meeting room.
You could hear the murmur of voices amongst the team, and as you entered, you were met with a rather small gathering. A few faces you hadn’t recognized, along with a few pilots, and of course Admirals Ackbar, Organa and Holdo gathered around the central table. Although you had never actually laid your eyes on him, you knew the man who also occupied the table was the one who had been the talk around D’Qar for months.
Poe Dameron was truly as striking as he was described. His gaze was locked on the planet slowly spinning in the middle of the table until the whoosh of the doors slid open, announcing your entrance. His palms pressed to the table’s edge, he straightened when he saw you, dark eyes making your stomach churn.  The room quieted as you took your place to the left of Holdo, across the table from Poe.
“You must be the Doctor,” he smiled. His teeth seemed to illuminate the room and you hesitated for a second. A small, split second.
“You’d be correct. And you are
” you trailed off, feigning ignorance. You knew that a man like Poe Dameron was never not known, and you thought he could be knocked down a peg or seven.
“Poe Dameron,” his hands folded behind his back. “Black Squadron Leader. We haven’t had the pleasure,” he lifted an eyebrow. “Yet.”
“No, we haven’t,” you responded, disregarding his innuendo. “I have, however, met several of your pilots. I wish the circumstances weren’t in the environment of my medbay.”
Poe furrowed his brow at that, and you stopped yourself from widening his eyes from the realization that he wasn’t aware of his pilots basically hiding from him by coming to her med bay, feigning illness or just needing a quiet place to rest. This either meant that Poe was completely oblivious to the fact that he was working his pilots too hard, or didn’t care and wasn’t too happy with the fact that they’d sought you out before or after flights.
Some leader, you quipped in your head.
“I’m glad you could join us on such short notice,” General Organa said with a knowing smile. You nodded politely and Ackbar increased the size of the holograms of information on the table so it was visible to the rest of the room.
“Our flight squadrons have recovered intel on a possible smuggling ship floating within the orbit of Kessel,” Leia nodded her head towards the planet, the cynosure of the table. “It’s been in our knowledge for a while, and we’d received no information that it didn’t simply belong to a spice smuggler.”
“Until now,” Poe chimed in. “It’s been stationary, in the orbit of Kessel for too long not to be something, our intel suggests it’s a storage unit or pit stop for the First Order.”
“How do we know it holds something valuable, of interest?” a technician asked.
“Red squadron and I flew by it last week. No need for there to be sleeping TIE fighters guarding it. I’m assuming the TIE fighters were manned, but off so they didn’t show up on our radars.”
The technician nodded.
“So, we aren’t gonna try our hand at the Kessel run?” one pilot muttered to another behind her and she pursed her lips, trying not to let out a chuckle. Especially in Leia’s presence. In all actuality, she’d probably laugh too.
“What’s your plan?” you asked, eyes locking with Poe’s. You fought to keep the air in your lungs.
“I take Red and Blue Squadron, and we find out what’s on that ship.”
That wasn’t enough for you. “You take your best pilots, blasters hot - and if it backfires? If you’re met with First Order reinforcements, a Star Destroyer?” Poe narrowed his eyes at you, but you weren’t going to stand across the table and let him flip a coin with lives. You continued.
“What if the ship is just spice?”
Poe clenches his jaw, rolling back his shoulders and you definitely don’t focus on the thick muscle peeking out from his unbuttoned flight suit, veins traveling up from his clavicle to his mandible. You wonder where he’s sensitive - the curve of his neck? His carotid? Maybe it was right under the curve of his mandible. Your mind berated you shortly after your thoughts dissipated for asking.
“If it’s not? If we uncover invaluable information that could give us the upper hand on those bastards?”
Carotid, you decide.
“It seems too hasty,” you defend. “No extraction plan, no real strategy. I’ve heard plenty about you, Dameron. I know you’re good, but are you so good that you can protect all your pilots if it goes sideways? Are you able to abandon the mission without finding out what the ship holds?”
It’s surprising that Ackbar, Organa and Holdo would let you two bicker this out. However, Holdo and Organa did ask for your presence and your insight, so they couldn’t really object to your extremely plausible concerns.
“Would you like to hop in a ship and come with? Oversee the operation yourself, Doctor?” Poe said slowly. The edge he gave to your title made your blood burn. Never had someone ever used your title as an insult, made it sound like a slur. It was something you sacrificed everything for. More than he could ever know.
“I’m sure you’re more than capable of overseeing an operation, Commander.” Two could definitely play this game. “But this isn’t an operation, this is you crossing your fingers and hoping your intel is reliable.”
“I’d have to agree,” Holdo nodded. Ackbar threw his hands up in exasperation.
“How are we supposed to gain anything by risking nothing?” He turned to you. Poe smirked at his words. You suppressed yourself from opening glaring at your superior and instead turned your direction back to Poe.
“You risk these lives, you’re in charge of contacting the families of the fallen. You deal with the fact that it was all your call, despite the glaring fact that you need more information.” You bit the inside of your cheek - hard. It didn’t matter how good Poe Dameron was. The information and operation was too risky, too murky and grey when, for everything at stake, it should be a little more clean cut.
“These pilots know what they’re risking every time they get in an x-wing. It’s why they joined. Do tell me Doctor, why exactly did you join?”
The tension in the air was so thick, you and Poe were mere centimeters from each other's throats. If he was close enough and you had a scalpel, you no doubt would slash at his. Leia minimized the holograms and cleared her throat.
“We need to find out what’s on that ship, but I have to agree that we do need more reliable intel. Do some more scouting, more recon, and we’ll reconvene when there’s more to go off of.” She then turned the table off and it seemed that the meeting was over. Poe still held your gaze, his eyes never leaving yours as you sighed.
“I can’t fix them out there,” you softened. “I can’t help. Understand that.”
“Then you picked the wrong role,” Poe responded, crossing the table and coming towards you. “If we lose that ship and it turns out to be valuable, all because you want more information, that’s your call.”
“As much as you may hate it, my judgement was asked for. I won’t apologize for having a conflicting opinion.”
You swear his gaze flickered somewhere below your eyes before darting back, too quick to realize where exactly he had looked. He swallowed.
“Neither will I. Pleasure to finally meet you,” he nodded curtly.
A sharp twang vibrated your smallest finger on your right hand, the thread tied there felt like it was physically being pulled forwards from its resting place at your side. Now, the thread felt tangible. You could feel the cut into your skin, the pressure from the pull. You looked down, following the thread not even a meter away to see it end in a perfect loop tied to the pinky of Poe.
He wrinkled his forehead as you looked up at him, face flushed pale and blood rushing and pumping so hard it was all you could hear. The room suddenly felt so loud and so small. It felt like you were trapped under Kaminoan waves, fighting for breath, fighting to surface but you were paralyzed. Poe voiced your name in concern and you barely registered it. Swallowing hard, your gaze flickered back down to his left hand that was now reaching up to grip your shoulder. You stepped back before he could make contact.
“I will see you around, Commander.”
And with that, you fled the room, all but sprinting to your medbay, your sanctuary, your haven.  You emptied the contents of your stomach in the refresher.

WARNING: Although this particular chapter does not depict violence or cursing, future installments will. As this story is based on an adult parody of MLP called The Mentally Advanced Series. I would encourage that if you had not watched it to do so to get a grasp of the world in which this takes place. Many of the jokes, lore, and otherwise are in reference to MAS, not just simply My Little Pony. I have also made a supercut that includes every reference and appearance of Celestia in the series. In case watching the entire MAS series maybe too time consuming. If you find Celestia, or other canon characters, used in crude and unpleasant depictions offensive, this is your warning. However, I would appreciate that you take a look anyway with an open mind.

“And here’s your armor and weapons. You should be able to start working tomorrow, but take it easy when you can. Magic works wonders, but if you’re not careful you’ll black out from exhaustion.” The front desk nurse recommended sliding over Valiance her belongings.
“I will. Thank you, ma’am. It feels great to stretch my legs after being in bed all week.” Valiance chuckled as she quickly put her body armor on, hooking her helmet and weapon onto her side.
“I could only imagine.” the nurse smiled, “There’s a soldier waiting for you in the lobby. I’m sure it’s important, so I wish you luck.”
Just as the nurse had instructed, a soldier in royal guard uniform awaited for Valiance at the medical bay’s entrance.
  “Valiance Ascalon?” he gruffly asked.
  “Yes, sir.”
“Well come on, soldier. I’m here to take you to your quarters.” the soldier informed as he began leading away with Valiance in tow.
The walk was mostly quiet, but in time, Valiance noticed the regality of her surroundings. Banners and painted glass of the sisters’ various achievements adorned the halls with very little modesty. As they continued, one photo in particular caught Valiance’s attention enough to stop in her tracks. The photo contained Celestia wearing a suit with a leather overcoat hanging from her shoulders.
Valiance raised a brow dumbfoundedly. ‘Huh. Not the kind of attire I’d expect her to wear
but not bad at all.’ she thought to herself while gazing into the picture.
“Come on, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery on your days off. Don’t fall behind!” the soldier called from further down the hall.
Snapping out of her trance, Valiance trotted back up to the soldier as they continued. Although, the scenery did spark some questions in her mind. After a moment, she finally decided to ask, “What does an acolyte do anyways?”
“That’s just a fancy name for a personal assistant. Though, judging by your particular skills, my guess would be being a personal bodyguard and just generally following her whim.” the soldier pondered as they approached a door and unlocked it.
Stepping into the room, Valiance softly muttered, “Wow, this is
lovely.” It was spacious with a large bed resting at its center, accompanied by a nightstand on each side. To the far left was a personal restroom along with a panoramic window with a beautiful view of Canterlot. To the right side of the bedroom rested her wardrobe and a bookshelf.
“I’d say I’m jealous of you, but in reality I can’t.” the soldier commented while handing the keys over.
   “Why do you say that?”
“Acolyte’s are hard to come by. The last one that worked here was before I was old enough to get a job. Let’s just say he didn’t have the heart for it.”
Valiance was perplexed by the soldier’s warning. However, she knew that no matter the task, it would be done in Celestia’s name.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back at the medical bay, a small pink pony with a satchel and large tight curled hair briskly made her way to the front desk. In a soft spoken voice the little mare asks the front desk clerk, “Hello, Nurse Flatline.”
“Hello, Mentee. Can I help you with something?”
ïżœïżœâ€œUm, do you know of a large pale mare who was committed here recently after the attack? She wore a purple and gold set of armor, not like the castle guards.”
“I'm sorry to say that the patient you're looking for was released earlier today.” The clerk replied, looking the pink horse up and down.
“Oh, well, can you tell me where she is then?”
“No Mentee, you know I’m not at liberty to release that information.”
Mentee groaned, “Pleeease, I really have to talk to her. She saved my life during the changeling attack, can’t you just give me a hint where she might be?”
The clerk pony pondered momentarily, letting out a deep sigh, before firmly answering, “If I give you a hint, you didn’t get it from me, is that clear?”
Mentee eagerly nodded with a small smile as she leaned in closer.
“She’s a castle employee as well, if you ask around you could probably find her.” Flatline whispered.
Mentee gasped and shouted, “Thank you so much, Flatline!” Only to be shushed and shooed away.
After asking around, Mentee had finally made her way to Valiance’s room. Her body began to rattle as she grew ever closer to the door. Closing her eyes to compose herself, she finally mustered up the courage to knock on the door
nothing. Maybe she just hadn’t heard the knock on the door. Mentee tried again, this time louder
still nothing. She pressed her ear up against the door only to find absolutely no noise on the other side.
“No one is in there, miss. She left for a walk.” a disapproving voice slated.
Mentee flinched and quickly spun around to see a blue coated maid sneering at her. Rather than attempt to explain herself, Mentee panicked and bolted.
Sweat gathered on Mentee’s brow as she came to rest in an empty corridor. Running a cloven hoof through her bangs she uttered to herself, “This is ridiculous, I just wanted to thank her for saving me.” She glanced down to the satchel dejectedly, “Maybe I can find her tomorrow once my shift is over
I need to get some air.”
The cool evening air was a blessing that gently kissed Mentee’s face. She had made her way to the castle courtyard and basked in its soft serenity. Plopping on a nearby bench next to a batch of daffodils, she gingerly took off her satchel to lean back and relax. Their light aroma invited Mentee into picking one and absentmindedly twirling it around. Taking a light whiff, she smiled and placed the flower in her hair. Stars twinkled in the strawberry sunset while a few ponies walked the courtyard to head home.
‘Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.’ Mentee thought, as she scanned her surroundings. Suddenly, a glint caught her eye. When she focused, she could swear her eyes were going to pop out of their sockets. Before her was her knight in shining armor, casually walking around the courtyard smelling flowers.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Valiance took comfort in the beauty of the flowered and marbled plaza, having spent the entire day getting to know the castle’s layout better and what would be her new home. The giant fountain gently ran in the center, soothing all who heard it. Giant hedge sculptures, vivid red roses, and yellow daffodils were all perfectly nurtured to be a sight for even the sorest eyes.
“E-excuse me.” a small yet eager voice called from behind. Valiance turned and was greeted by a small pink pony, with thick ringlets for hair, and spectacles. The mare shuffled slightly closer and gently continued, “Uh, h-hello. I don’t mean to disturb but
um, well, you probably don’t remember me but-”
“Oh! You’re the mare that was almost carried off during the attack!” Valiance blurted out with a smile.
The little unicorn blushed, surprised that Valiance had even remembered her at all, “Yes, that was me. M-my name is Mentee, Mentee Prim.”
Valiance’s face softened further, “It's a pleasure to meet you, Mentee. My name’s Valiance Ascalon.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Valiance and Mentee were not alone, the God Princess, Celestia, too had wished to enjoy a stroll to revel over her recent success. True to her word, the Princess oversaw the remainder of the changeling hive eradicated and their maggots turned to fertilizer. With that, and the acquisition of a new acolyte, Celestia had almost considered relieving her favorite student of her friendship studies for the day. Almost.
Voices had tickled at Celestia’s ear from the courtyard. Since the sun had set, most ponies would have gone on their way to the dining halls, barracks, or home at that point so she had a small interest to inquire the purpose of the conversation.
It didn’t take long for Celestia to find the source of the whispers. She easily spotted her new acolyte talking to one of the castle’s library assistants, Mentee Prim. The conversation itself was harmless, with small talk abound and a few thanks sprinkled in. However, when Mentee pulled her gift out of her satchel, Celestia’s cold stare stabbed at Mentee’s glimmering eyes. Celestia scrutinized deep into Mentee’s heart, seeing through her feeble façade. This was no mere thanks, the pink mare’s soul pounded with infatuation. The way she kicked the dust and tugged at her hair all the while coyly glancing at Valiance left no doubt in the Princess’ mind; and it filled her with vile intrigue.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I, uh, wanted to let you know how thankful I am for saving me. I really thought that I was gonna be a goner until you came along.” Mentee said, rubbing her neck. She tapped her hooves together in thought then reached for her satchel, “This isn’t much, b-but I hope you still enjoy it well enough.” Encased in periwinkle blue magic, Mentee unlatched her satchel to reveal a small pink box tied in a red laced ribbon.
“Oh! Well thank you, Mentee. You really didn’t have to do that.” Valiance assured, gently taking the gift.
“You know, I’ve been working at the castle for a while now. There've been plenty of acquaintances I’ve made
but no one to really call my friend. I was just wondering
 if you would
 maybe
” Mentee sheepishly stalled.
Valiance chuckled heartily, “Of course we can be friends. It’d be nice to have company with someone who knows their way around here, not to mention someone so sweet.”
Mentee’s stomach twisted into a knot, her already flushed face was now blistering red. In an act of feverish joy, Mentee sputtered, “T-t-thank y-you! Y-you too!” With nothing holding her back she sprinted away, nearly tripping over herself as she spun around a corner and out of sight.
Perplexity gripped Valiance’s thoughts, ‘I wonder where she ran off to, I hope I didn’t say anything stupid. That would be embarrassing.’  Turning her attention to the box, Valiance pulled the ribbon and peered inside. Her benign smile graced her lips again. Inside, were cookies in the shapes of flowers, hearts, and bunnies. Each one was carefully decorated in a shiny pastel colored frosting, some were adorned with cute smiles to top it off.
As Valiance innocently popped one in her mouth, a sudden chill ran up her spine when she felt the looming presence of some wicked soul behind her. “And what have we here?”
Valiance twisted around to see the owner staring down at her through biting amethyst eyes. The moon’s rays illuminated the roses in the garden, bathing Celestia in the color red. Although initially shocked, relief washed over Valiance as she sighed, “Oh, Princess Celestia, it’s you. This is just a little thank you gift from a friend I saved.” Valiance passed the gift box to her majesty to see personally.
The Princess shook the box slightly with a sneer, and with her magic, pulled out a heart shaped cookie. “How sweet.” she hummed as she jaggedly pulled the cookie in half. Without giving Valiance time to think, Celestia jammed one of the halves into her acolyte’s mouth before turning and walking away.
Bewildered by Celestia’s actions, Valiance chewed her half and absentmindedly reached for another cookie, but was only met with air. It was then that she snapped back to her senses, realizing that Celestia had taken the entire box for herself. Conflicted, Valiance chose to keep her mouth shut. It was Celestia’s will, after all. But that doesn’t mean that I’m happy about it.’ Valiance huffed to herself, having really wanted to enjoy her gift. “Forget it.” Valiance groaned, throwing her hooves into the air, “I’m just gonna go to bed.”

i did not expect this to be THIS long. its not awful but like. long, for what i usually do
tw: war, homophobia (briefly in the beginning), scars, wounds, sword fighting, death of unnamed characters, arrow wound
Tumblr media
All this death.
All this death surrounded you, you welcomed it into your home. Your mother, the honorable queen, had opened the palace grounds to the war-torn soldiers, and you, their noble prince, walked among them.
You spoke to the soldiers about the war, thanked them for their sacrifice. You walked among them, empathizing with their pain, fetching them water or food or a nurse when they asked.
Your heart broke for them, every one of them. They clearly believed in the crusade, believed in the mission of their king and their god... their hearts would break in turn if they discovered you believed in neither.
How could a bloody, violent, evil war be fought for a benevolent god? How could a fair king order his men to their deaths?
You adjusted the crown you wore and walked from the main-hall-turned-medical-bay, hoping to find your father. He had grown weary with you in the recent years, your unwillingness to find a princess and your disapproval of his politics, but maybe he’d listen to you about the safety of your people. Maybe, he’d realize that you took your crown seriously, even if you didn’t intend to wear it the way that he wanted you to. After all, you were his only suitable heir- he was well into his old age, and if he intended to replace you with your brother, he’d have to wait years until the toddler was old enough to rule. You were his only choice.
You neared the entrance into your father’s throne room, but heard his voice echoing without it, and so paused just beyond the doorframe to listen.
“I will have no soft-hearted, peace-mongering pansy on my throne! That will not be my legacy!”
You knew your father’s opinions of you. You never, until this moment, realized how deeply they ran.
This war, this country. Even if one day you could gain control and stop it all, they would still never respect you. Never. You saw it now- and you saw what you needed to do.
The thought of running away was not a new one. You had, for years, considered it, weighed the likeliness. You knew you’d survive, being trained in hunting, combat, all of it, by Gallain, a noble knight. You had been trained alongside Jacob, who was both your personal knight and your best friend.
And, something more.
You often went to him whenever you felt like running away, and he always convinced you to stay, assuring you of your nobility and royalty. But Jacob disappeared years ago, without even a goodbye, so on that day you had no such guidance.
With your sword, your bow and arrow, and as much gold as you could carry, you disappeared with your horse into the countryside.
“Something must be done,” said a nobleman, a lord, commanding the center of a tavern.
“I agree,” said another, portly belly pressing against the table in front of him, “But he’s bested my guards. What can be done?”
“He’s a thieving, murderous boy who takes more than he can carry. Surely he can be bested by just a few more guards.”
“No, Estevan- he cuts through men like no knight I’ve ever seen. He’s terrifying. My wife is worried for our children, should he return.”
Jacob wasn’t one to push into conversations to which he wasn’t invited, but this did seem to be his specialty. He was still a nomad, still an outcast, but now his tavern interests were less opium and more noble assistance to those who needed it.
“Excuse me,” he said, looking up from the booth he’d been seated in, “but who might be causing you lot so much trouble?” The collection of noblemen looked at him, various expressions of disbelief and incredulousness gracing their faces.
“You don’t know of the Dark Prince?”
Jacob let his eyes narrow briefly as he considered the nickname against all he’d known as a knight, as well as all he’d learned as an outcast.
“I don’t.”
The man who had been referred to as ‘Estevan’ let out an obnoxious laugh.
“Boy, come along, to my estate,” he said, giving his friends little cheeky glances. “I’ve strengthened my guard, as I’m expecting an attempt at a thievery tonight. If you best him, I’ll pay you handsomely.”
Clearly, these idiotic men had never heard of Jacob, the Outcast.
Well, Jacob the Outcast had never heard of you.
In the three years since you’d fled your kingdom, you’d created quite a name for yourself. Your first move had been taking some of the money you swiped from your father and commissioning a crown- one made of black tungsten, with none of the engravings or jewels that had once been your royal right. You wanted smooth, reflective metal, curling around your temples and into short, sharp spikes.
You wore it whenever you weren’t alone, which was nearly all the time. You wore it when you travelled, even under your large hood; you wore it when you fought. And yes, you wore it when you stole.
Jacob followed Estevan to his estate and watched from afar while the guards he’d hired stood watch. He was hidden, and kept watch over the whole of the estate, wondering if he’d catch a glimpse of this Dark Prince.
He was glad he’d chosen to hide, as the skies opened up upon the earth, and he kept semi-dry underneath the leaves of the tree he’d perched within. The guards, walking the length of an exterior wall, had no such refuge from the storm.
He did not notice the black-cloaked figure until it was illuminated by the torchlight. You had no sword drawn to catch the light until you were upon the guards, and the two of them fell to you without so much as a sound.
Jacob, curious, kept his eyes on you as you broke through the wall, having made a hole between the guards’ patrols. He knew that he could easily take you down with a single arrow, but he wanted to see how this would end.
Would you cut through guards, as one of the noblemen had suggested? Why were you attempting this theft when you had to have known you were expected here? Would you succeed?
You entered the home silently, taking stock of your location. You’d received a bit of insider information from one of Estevan’s servants as to the location of his gold, and made a direct route to it.
Gold, as you well know, is one of the heaviest substances on earth. But you were much stronger than you’d been as a prince only trained out of tradition, and not for any true purpose. You were strong enough to carry enough gold to buy a kingdom, and still fight your way out of here.
Today, you would be modest. You only needed to feed a village, a few pounds was plenty. Why take what you didn’t need?
The guards were none the wiser until you made your escape, attempting to break once again through their wall to flee into the surrounding forest. You brought the whole lot of them down upon you, and Jacob relaxed against the tree, assured that you would certainly be brought to justice by the ten guards that you now face.
Yet, you weren’t. You weren’t even harmed. Large hood still hiding your crown and your face, you bled through them, some receiving a strike to the legs to put them on the ground, others struck over the head with the hilt of your sword. You had gone through the whole of them without much of an issue, and walked at not much of a worried pace toward the forest.
Well, if there was a time for Jacob to intervene, now was it. Nothing else stood in your way.
He pulled an arrow and notched it to the drawstring, lifting it to his face. Even in the rain, at this distance, he would make the shot.
No more than three seconds later, you took an arrow to the shoulder.
There was pain, yes. It shocked you into stumbling forward, the sudden motion throwing your hood back and exposing your face. But you’d had your fair share of pain, and more pressing was the confusion- Estevan Perrero hired no archers. There shouldn’t have been any on his property, let alone one who could hit you at this range.
Against your better judgement, you turned, glancing back at the estate you had just removed a few pounds of gold from, and scanned its walls. There were no archers in sight, so you righted your hood and hurried on, disappearing into the forest, showing little care for the arrow you now carried in your shoulder. You knew better than to attempt to remove it.
Jacob threw himself from the tree and gave chase. He couldn’t let you get far- it would be hard to track you in this rain, and he needed to find you.
He had to find this Dark Prince- because it couldn’t possibly be the young prince he’d once loved and protected, all that time ago. It had to have been a trick of the light, or the rain, it couldn’t- this hardened, scarred, skilled thief couldn’t possibly be the compassionate prince whose nightmares he’d once soothed.
He followed you through the forests, to a trade road that lead to a nearby village. You traveled in the rain all through the night until you reached a village, just before dawn, and he followed, far enough behind that you didn’t notice him.
Then, you carefully removed your bag from your shoulder, avoiding the arrow. You distributed the gold among the people, and though they thanked you tremendously, you waved away their offers of repayment upon the condition that you were given somewhere to sleep, and heal.
You were allowed a room in a tavern, the biggest one available. Only once the door had closed did you allow yourself to rest, letting your shoulders fall, your eyes close.
You were so tired.
With one hand, you removed your black crown, regarding it with sorrow-filled eyes. Then, you reached over your shoulder and let your fingers frame the arrow; it was wedged deep into your flesh, and all of the surrounding fabric was soaked through with blood. It needed to be removed, but you couldn’t get a good angle on it, not one comfortable enough to yank it out cleanly. And a clean yank was instrumental- if the arrowhead was left behind, you’d all but lose the arm.
You felt a little bit of panic grip your stomach, as you didn’t know how you’d remove it, and once one emotion broke through to your mind, many followed. You felt your throat close up, fighting against the past you’d left behind, the people you’ve abandoned, all of the killing and the stealing.
“Need help with that?” said a voice behind you, and you quickly sucked up your emotions to whirl around. Had you really forgotten to lock the door?
Any number of quips and comebacks came to mind, but as quickly as they appeared, they faded- you didn’t realize the man who’d regarded you was Jacob.
A thousand feelings flittered through you at the sight of him. He was just as beautiful as you remembered, and he looked at you just as kindly. But you couldn’t push aside how he’d abandoned you without as much as a goodbye. And now- what was he doing here?
Still, you could trust his hands. So you nodded, wordlessly, and turned, gripping onto the table in front of you to make sure your muscles would stay in place as he pulled.
He approached you carefully, as though advancing toward a wild animal, you could hear it in his gait on the squeaky floorboards. He took one hand to the center of your back, then sliding it to the side to frame the arrow with two fingers on either side. He made a small noise as he touched you- you wondered if he was worried for the wound, or surprised by the muscle that had never been there when he’d known you.
“Don’t tense,” he said, and you gave a little scoff. Obviously, you thought to yourself, but that was certainly easier said than done. Without warning he pulled, tearing the arrow from your flesh. You let out a roar, your body falling forward, your uninjured arm barely keeping you from falling flat onto the table. Heaving, agonized breaths took control of your body until the pain ebbed, and you swallowed hard.
“Sorry,” Jacob said, glad he had used a light arrowhead that hadn’t gone deep, and was fairly easy to remove, “I wouldn’t have shot if I knew it was you.” You turned to him, surprised, narrowing your eyes.
“It was you?” You repeated, then turned your eyes to the floor, weighing what that revelation meant. “So then- you followed me? What, have you been hired to arrest me? These people need that gold, you can’t take it back from them!” Jacob shook his head with the slightest of a smile, holding up a hand.
“No, nothing like that,” he said, “I was supposed to stop a theft, but when I saw you-” His gaze raked down your body and back up again. “I never expected to see you so far from home. And so different.” Maybe it was meant to be sweet, but it still stung your heart that he had left you, when he disappeared to wherever he’d gone, some five years ago. Any fondness you felt for him was soured by that.
“I wasn’t too much different, until you shot me,” you said dryly, ”Make it up to me, Jacob, help me dress the wound. That’ll be your first step.” You turned from him and began shedding layers, blood soaked as they were, and laying them over the single chair in the room.
“My first step toward what?” He asked, and you paused, your last layer halfway up your torso, looking away from him.
“Toward letting me forgive you.” With your grim tone, he dropped his queries, waiting for you to completely bare your torso. He searched into his own bag to find a roll of bandage.
You waited, looking over your shoulder at him as he dug through his belongings, and then turned his attention to you. You looked away when he grew closer, closing your eyes against his touch. His hands were exactly as you remembered them- calloused, rough, warm. For a moment before he began giving attention to your renewed wound, he let his fingers trace over the scars that littered you.
“I used to know your body better than any map,” he breathed, running the pad of his finger down the long scar you’d received when your path crossed with an overzealous Mongol, “but it seems like you’ve carved yourself an entirely new terrain.” You swallowed hard as he began wrapping the bandage around your shoulder and torso, gathering your wits to make a response.
“Well, such a thing does happen, when you disappear for five years.” You let him guide your limbs as he dressed the wound, your gaze low, breathing as evenly as you could force yourself to.
“Where have you been?” you asked him, and if you hadn’t known him since childhood, you wouldn’t have picked up on it- but with his little exhale, you heard him smile.
“I spent a few years in the far east, in an opium-stupor,” he said, his fingers just as gentle as they’d ever been, at least when he handled you. “But after Gallain died, I’ve been travelling the world, offering my services anywhere I thought I could do some good. That was why I thought I’d be stopping a theft today.” There was so much to take in, but you couldn’t help but think of your old mentor.
“I’d heard Gallain passed. I’m sorry.” Jacob stiffened, just for a moment, and regardless of the brevity, you felt him do it. No matter how you tried to convince yourself you were holding him away from you, your heart still ached at the thought of the grief he must have felt.
“What’s happened to you, all this time?” He asked, pulling the attention away from himself as he tucked the length of the bandage under itself, your wound completely covered.
You had known the question was coming- it was inevitable. And still, you had to think about your answer. You didn’t want to admit the awful things you’d done, not to him.
“My father was never going to let me be king,” you said with a bit of a pitiful smile, pulling your tunic over yourself again, “You knew that, didn’t you?” Jacob let out a heavy breath, shaking his head.
“I knew he didn’t approve of your politics,” he said, and bit his lip before he added “of us.” You shut your eyes briefly, knowing it was better than seeing whatever expression he had at those two words. Did he miss you? Did he regret being with you? Did he regret leaving you?
“But I never thought he’d cast you out.”
“He didn’t,” you corrected him, lifting your chin before opening your eyes. “I didn’t give him the chance. I left.” Jacob narrowed his eyes briefly, considering what you were saying, and you took the break in the conversation to take a seat on the bed.
“How long ago?”
You caught his eye, and now that he stood above you, you felt almost ashamed of your actions, of the consequences they must’ve had on the people you cared about. Your poor little brother.
“Three years.”
Jacob shook his head, but didn’t say anything. Neither of you looked at the other, and neither said a thing. You looked out the window, seeing the sky grow lighter with the early morning.
“Jacob, I need-” you swallowed harshly, “I have to sleep.” He only let out a laugh, a smile sprouting on his face again.
“Me too,” he said, and after a moment of deep thinking, turned toward the door of the room.
“Jacob,” you said, making him pause, and turn back to you. Now that you had his attention, you couldn’t back down- but you took an instant longer to gather your courage. “You can stay,” you said, and it took you right back to when you’d said those very same words to him for the first time, when he was your knight, before he was a crusader, and you just a young teenaged prince.
If you could assume from the fondness, affection, and longing that warmed his face, he was remembering the same thing.

HOSTIS, Chapter XVI: Adsumo, Claim
Tumblr media
Previous Chapter (XV: Vetus Flamma)
Member: Lee Hyunjae (tbz) ft younghoon and eric
Genre (by chapter): drama, angst
Category: Short Novel/Long Series
“i knew i wasn’t the person you needed”
Tumblr media
kim young hoon.
you remember the way he always offered to carry your bag or books, though you were well aware he’d rather not.
younghoon was always known for his cold, aloof demeanor.
that is, until you start talking to him.
the first time you met younghoon, this strange feeling of queasiness and anxiety wrapped itself around your stomach, and it really wasn’t great timing when it was right after a full meal you decided to stuff yourself before extra class.
being at a buffet just a few days earlier had literally poisoned your blood and your system; it was just hidden for this period of time.
so when the food you had for lunch poured out through your lips because of the food poisoning you were yet to be made aware of, only to land on younghoon’s shoe in school, it would’ve been the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you.
if you hurled on lee hyunjae, you would’ve been happy to be be diagnosed with food poisoning.
but this was kim younghoon.
his popularity was matched with lee hyunjae though he was nowhere near as intelligent -- or scheming.
girls around him started shooting you looks of disgust and low whispers of you being inappropriate or inconsiderate began to drown your senses out.
the regurgitation also forced out a lot of your energy, and your legs were slowly turning into jelly with every passing second.
but before you could make a second stumble that would’ve allowed gravity to pull you into the concrete floor, younghoon holds your arm and keeps you upright.
watching him crane his neck down and lower his back to see your vomit painted chin was both reassuring but terribly harsh on your pride.
“are you alright?”
the loss of ego keeps your head hung low, and he takes it as a sign that you really weren’t feeling well.
ignoring all the girls staring at him dragging the smartest girl in school across campus to the medical bay was such a sight to behold, even for lee hyunjae.
you wish you could’ve seen it for yourself from a third person perspective.
not many people were aware of your little crush on younghoon, but you were always too busy trying to outdo lee hyunjae to even spare a second to day dream about him.
sometimes you felt shallow and materialistic for choosing younghoon to wear your emotions on, since you haven’t really spoken to him.
but if he didn’t know, it didn’t matter.
there was an expectation for younghoon to stay clear of you, especially when you were already known as one of two areses in school. yet younghoon found reassurance in that, in the way you stood out from the crowd against your will.
younghoon’s face and personality did it for him.
your competitiveness and ability to be the only person who could stand up against lee hyunjae did it for you.
lucifer had the best of both worlds, which made him all the more hate-worthy.
younghoon’s choice to invest in your friendship with him came as a surprise, but it felt like sunrise after a long night.
for six years you’ve been wasting your energy on proving yourself better than lee hyunjae, so having younghoon becoming both a source and and outlet for your energy to channel to and from...
it was nothing short of magical.
there was absolutely no way you could’ve forgotten the satisfaction that filled your lungs and your heart when the school found out you were dating the kim younghoon.
you never really figured out why it was such a shocker, though you were pretty sure the school was just surprised you chose kim younghoon, a not-so-smart student, in comparison to your must-top-the-class persona.
most of the time spent with younghoon was either spent tutoring him or having nonsensical conversations with him before you slept. those were the times you felt relaxed, you felt loose, you felt like you didn’t really need to win.
there was nothing to win anyway, not with younghoon at least.
you had convinced yourself that younghoon was sick and tired of your never-ending battle with lee hyunjae, one that drove a scandalous picture of you and the lab teacher all over the internet like it was a freeway.
younghoon must’ve known that the picture was just edited, for the teacher never got into trouble for it, only mild investigation.
but at least he was smart enough to save himself from the walking fire of fury, that was you, and he used this chance to run.
love was never really a priority in your life until younghoon came along, so even when that beautiful, flowery garden part of your life had gone, your priority naturally fell back on beating lucifer at his own game.
or a game that the both of you thought was a great idea to start.
love was just a fickle thing, and all it did was to make you weak.
and if you were fighting ares himself, you had to be your best ares.
ares is not weak.
ares is brutal and cruel and you had to be just that in order to beat another.
sitting across younghoon, five years later, in your favourite cafe with the evening sun disappearing behind the buildings of the city, felt like a fever dream.
a dream you yearned had happened five years ago, not now.
two bowls of soup and a bowl of truffle fries get served to your table, and younghoon thanks the waitress with a slight nod. the waiter recognises you, so she just gives you a small smile.
younghoon being the gorgeous man he is, catches her attention again, and you smile at your food when you felt her reluctance to leave the table.
“i must say,” he hands you a soup spoon after checking it for shitty cleaning. “i have high expectations for this chowder.”
“i just had this yesterday,” the pepper bottle shakes in your hold. “surely that must mean something?”
the slightly amber lamp dangles above your table, and the heat from the lightbulb was making the skin on your nose and forehead feel warm despite the early autumn wind gushing about outside.
the pillars inside the cafe make it feel like you were in a warehouse, so every time someone appears behind a pillar and walks somewhere in your sight, younghoon would always look up to see if you were looking at anybody you knew.
there was a bell hung on the door of the cafe near the cashier’s counter; which was located behind the wall you were sitting against.
the sound makes you wait for someone new to show up in your span of vision, and if nobody appeared, you’d know that they ordered takeaway.
“how’s working at the hospital? i heard you say you’ve been working with uncle for about a month?”
“i think it’s about five weeks or so, yeah,” the tiny circles of oil on the soup gets pushed around while you stir it, and younghoon adds pepper to his serving after tasting the truffle fries. “it’s alright... i mean, it’s just everything i expected.”
“so, no surprises?”
surprises.
“oh,” a snort runs through your throat as you take one mouth of your soup. “there was one big surprise--”
“lee hyunjae?”
the name strikes a chord in you, and you weren’t too sure why.
“god must hate me to put me in the same room as him... we started working for the hospital on the same day, and his office is right next to mine.”
“huh,” younghoon hums, blowing on his spoon of soup before having it. “you must’ve been really upset when he showed up.”
“‘upset’ isn’t a strong enough word to describe how much i wanted to shove a pen down his throat. consider disgusted, angry, furious, disappointed, resentful, hateful--”
“should i be worried you work in an environment where those feelings should not be involved in--”
generous laughter escape your lungs and younghoon’s smile encourages you to return to your food.
“but otherwise, it’s a blast. i love my patients, i love my mentors and the nurses and the colleagues-- they are all so endearing and patient.”
he nods while chewing on the ingredients in the chowder.
“what about you? what are you doing now? i mean, we haven’t spoken in five years.”
“i’m a salesman, guess i figured out a way to use my face to the best of my ability.”
“oh, god,” a chuckle rings in the air between you as you dip your spoon into the bowl again. “that must’ve worked in some magical ways. has anybody tried to get your number?”
“do i really want to answer that when you already know?”
a cheeky smile greets you when you look up from your food, and you shake your head when you realise you could still read his eyes the same.
“i don’t suppose you’re romantically involved in anybody now?” he asks. there was an absence of... care and concern he used to have back then.
he wasn’t nonchalant about it, but you could tell that five years was adequate for your relationship with younghoon to turn completely stagnant.
there was no longer any hint of love in it, even if he did still care for you.
he could still love you, but if he was, he was doing a damn good job at hiding it.
but that question.
what does ‘romantically involved’ really mean to you?
on one hand, you believed your heart belonged to the lovable, enthusiastic intern who was going to leave in about three weeks.
yet your body resigns itself to another man, one whom you’ve hated nearly half your life, the same man who took younghoon away from you, even if it wasn’t completely his doing.
“uh... define ‘romantically involved’.”
younghoon looks at you with slightly furrowed brows and confused eyes, sending one piece of truffle fry into his mouth.
“...it worries me that you had to ask that. i’ll rephrase it; do you have anybody you’re interested in?”
“well, there’s this really cute intern working at the neuro-research department.”
“intern? he’s younger?”
“age is just a number.”
“fair play.”
the jingle of the bell hanging on the entrance door rings gently, and your eyes travel down to the soup.
“he’s super enthusiastic and there’s just something about him that’s so... comforting. i see him and i think about nothing but sunshine and warmth and laughter. he’s just... so cheerful, compared to whatever i’ve been used to.”
a pause, and you look up at younghoon, your peripheral vision not seeing anybody walk out from the wall you were sitting against.
“he sounds like someone you really want in your life. i’ve known you long enough to know what kind of person you’d might be attracted to. i guess the man’s lucky enough to have attracted someone with a complete opposite personality.”
eric’s face comes to mind, and your heart starts to do tiny flips when you recall the way his eyes fold when he smiles. the warm rumble of his voice when he speaks. the harmony that he sings when he laughs.
“that sounds strange, doesn’t it? we kissed at a party once and--”
“you kissed the intern?”
“it was at a party and we were all slightly drunk--”
“i don’t recall the last time you had enough to be drunk--”
“let me live, younghoon!” you feign a hit across the table, and he chuckles softly, dodging your little attack.
the bell rings again, and a teenage couple walks in this time.
“frankly, i am surprised about one thing,” half his bowl was empty now, and you reach over to jab at some fries with a fork.
“what is it?”
he pushes his air out from his eyes and presses his fingers into his cheek, leaning one elbow on the edge of the table.
“that you didn’t end up with lee hyunjae.”
the scoff that came out garnered the attention of that young couple, but you couldn’t care less.
“lee hyunjae? of all people, why would you think--”
“because he’s the only one who was ever able to be on the same... pedestal as you.”
pedestal. potential. day one.
“without him, i don’t know if you would’ve pushed yourself so hard. i know you always had a thing against your parents not spending enough time with you, i thought you’d break the tradition of becoming a doctor because of that.”
“yeah, well...” the chowder calls out to you. “hyunjae or not, i would’ve become a doctor anyway.”
silence.
it drags on long enough for younghoon to finish nearly the rest of his soup, and there was a weighted feeling of... fear in your chest.
your heart was thumping, though not at a fast pace.
eric’s smile was floating around in your head, but the way younghoon looked at you when he said that name planted a seed inside you.
you worry for awhile if that seed meant anything at all.
“y/n, i have to be honest with you about something...”
the truffle bits melt in your mouth as you sit back.
“i didn’t dump you because i believed you were with the teacher.”
“oh,” a gentle giggle exits through your lips as you lean forward to get another fry. “i know that. you dumped me because you were sick of me always at lee hyunjae’s throat and we were always fighting--”
“no, i dumped you because i knew i wasn’t the person you needed.”
the muscles and nerves in your body halt, and your eyes slowly travel up from the fries to his.
“and i highly doubt this intern is going to be it either.”
the words come together in your head, but they felt so alien on your tongue.
“but you just said that he’s someone i want--”
“i was not what you needed, and he isn’t either. you want him, but you need someone else.”
a gulp pushes itself down your throat and your temples tighten as you pull away from the bowl of fries, and your eyes return to the bowl to finish whatever was left in it.
“i’ve got no clue how neither of you saw it, but there’s literally nobody else better for the two of you than each other.”
your lips either remain entertaining the spoon that was travelling in and out of your mouth, or pursed so tight, you cut off the blood circulation to them.
“the only reason why the two of you could do so well in school was because you had each other to push both ends. i had my fair share of interactions with lee hyunjae, i’m well-aware of the kind of person he is when he’s not trying to get one score higher than you, even when you’ve already scored full marks.”
“do you still want the rest of the fries? i--”
“y/n,” he pulls the leftover fries away from you, and you hiss childishly at his move.
“so don’t listen to me, but you’ve been avoiding talking about lee hyunjae for the last twenty four hours and believe me when i say this, if this was five years ago or any time before that, you wouldn’t have missed a second trying to convince me that he’s the shittiest person on earth.”
“maybe i just decided he’s not worth my time--”
“so why were you wearing a male’s dress shirt yesterday?”
oh, fuck.
“it could’ve been someone el--”
“and the foundation on your neck doesn’t do much under this lighting, especially since it’s been a long day for you.”
your face was heating up not because of the lamp above the table, but the fact that younghoon was able to see right through you.
even you couldn’t see through yourself.
“but whoever said it was him who di--”
“there’s literally nobody who would have the damn guts to do things like that to you besides him. i’m pretty sure not even your sunshine intern would do it if he’s as cheerful as you make him to be.”
stop.
“if it’s anything i learnt about you, it’s that you wouldn’t let a man do anything to show that he claims you.”
please stop talking.
“but someone’s gone ahead and did just that... and when i heard uncle talk about a doctor lee yesterday, it just... hit me.”
stop. talking.
he finally stops and returns you the fries that you no longer had the appetite of finishing.
“so, it wasn’t hyunjae. you haven’t said one bad thing about him since i saw you yesterday. tell me that if this was you five years ago, you would’ve done the same.”
i wouldn’t. because i hated him.
the silence starts to eat you out when the confusion sinks in even further.
why must he say all those things to mess you up even more?
there was nothing he said that wasn’t true, though you wished you could flat out deny everything.
but he’s seen it all without even telling him anything, and you start to wonder if it’s been there all along, but you chose to ignore it.
all you wanted was an aphrodite, but why does she seem like she’s drifting further and further away?
by the time younghoon returns you back to the safety of your house, he was well-aware that the conversation from before had some effect on you, for he pulls you into a tight hug after walking you to your door.
his scent wafts through your nose and you shut your eyes to take it all in.
what would it have been like had hyunjae not torn him away from you?
then again, younghoon was the one who tore himself away from you on his own accord.
“call me if you need anything. anything at all.”
he releases you, hands still on your shoulders.
“i’ll still love you the way i always did, but i know for a fact that i’m not the one you need in your life.”

But is it enough? When an ex-spy must look beneath the helmet to save Din Djarin's life, there's only one option that allows him to continue following his Creed. Marriage.

Chapter Seven
Noa Enti was dead.
Finally.
Redin Deedi might be dead. Might not. To tell the truth, she didn’t care much either way, so long as her bridge to him was as charred as the corpse she’d left in place of her own.
She didn’t like killing off her characters; she’d lost five of them in the past six months. Her pool of identity options was dwindling, and she hated being without a cover.
Soon, she would have to come up with some new ones.
It wouldn’t be as easy as it once had been.
For the moment, though, she was fine with being no one. Noa Enti was dead. Nenana Orze had never set foot on Dafin III.
No One stalked through the darkened hall, guided by the blinking security lights. Her clever planning and well placed credits had seen the power cut, and the explosives she’d smuggled in under the guise of an engineer had done their job perfectly. The extra security uniform and helmet had been easy to steal, and the others were far too busy doing damage control to notice that their ranks had grown by one. Everything had gone exactly to plan.
There was one problem, though.
She was hurt.
Human variables - something that couldn’t always be planned against. There had been precious few seconds between Deedi learning about the fake explosives strapped to her chest and the detonation of the real ones embedded in the drink trolley. In the chaos of those few seconds - where everyone was scrambling to get out of the room - one of the guards had panicked.
The blaster bolt had clipped her side - just below the ribs. Mercifully, it hadn’t hit anything important, but it still hurt like hell and would pose a real issue if she didn’t get the bleeding stopped soon.
Also, it was slowing her way down.
But other than that, everything was fine. She was struggling to keep moving, but good at faking it. The cover wasn’t elaborate enough for her liking, but the black tinted visor covering the upper half of her face and requisition blaster she carried were working well enough.
Well
 almost well enough.
She’d actually made it out of the building and was moving through the alleyways created by the auxiliary buildings surrounding the main tower - Deedi’s own little self-sufficient town within the city; the wealthy businesses and housing that the rest of the planet couldn’t afford.
Smoke choked the air, reducing the usually well-lit streets into a greasy haze. The place was abandoned, the people all having fled the shadow of the burning building or hiding away in safe rooms built into the basements for situations like this. A droid or two bumbled by, locking up the businesses and generally doing the things their owners weren’t willing to stay out to do, but they didn’t pay her any mind.
Slowed by her injury, she was about a minute and a half behind schedule; Deedi’s men would be reorganizing by now. Her window for a clean exit was closing fast.
Sure enough, Nenana cursed herself when three guards - real guards - came jogging around the corner of a soot-caked Colo Claw Fish dinery and a jeweler’s.
It was too late to hide. Even in the subpar conditions, they’d already seen her.
“Hey, you! Stop right there!”
And they knew that there was something off about her. Great.
In her condition, she needed to avoid a shoot out if she could.
Only one thing for it.
She lifted her head, squared her shoulders, and marched straight up to them.
“Report!” She barked impatiently in her best Huttese accent, knowing that it was the first language of many of the soldiers hired from Dafin III. She turned her helmeted face from one to another, fixing them each with an imposing glare.
The trio wavered. She jumped on their confusion.
“What’s the status of Sector Three? Has that section been secured yet?”
The one in the middle - the highest ranking, according to the button on his lapel - squared his shoulders. “No, ma’am. Squadrons Two and Four are converging on Sector Seven. Looters have broken through the outer barriers.”
Ah, excellent. She’d hoped something like that would happen. Although Deedi controlled the major crime gangs, his shift to higher caliber goods had left the lower niches up for grabs. The smaller underground gangs would be moving in to see what they could get.
A great cover for her, should the resolution to her current problem require the corpses of the three guards.
She heaved a frustrated sigh. “Get on the comm and divert Squad Four to Sector Three. Those cargo entrances are wide open.”
He immediately moved to do as she said, but hesitated when one of his companions, a green twi’lek man, spoke up. “With all due respect, ma’am, why not call in the order yourself?”
Shit.
“You don’t get to fucking talk to me that way!” She snarled, hoping a threat from a supposed-superior would blot out any doubts he had running through his head. “Do as you’re told, or I’ll have you strung up and shot.”
“Ma’am, you’re bleeding,” the third guard, a human female, pointed out. “There hasn’t been any shooting in this Sector yet.”
Fuck.
“That’s right,” the first man who she’d almost fooled finally caught on. He stepped forward menacingly, his hand going to the blaster at his hip. She held her ground. “Unless you’ve been through Sector Seven already, eh?”
This was exactly why she hated not having an elaborate cover. She would have created one in advance, but she’d already made one for when she’d had to pose as an engineer, and she hated creating more than one new person per mission. A single anomaly in a database would be overlooked, but two?
“I was patrolling Sector Seven when the first looters pushed through,” she growled. “I was hit and fell back. I was on my way to the medical wing, but got fucking distracted when I saw that those exits are wide open. The main building should be on lockdown! Do you know how much the droids in the cargo bay are worth? A lot more than you’ll ever see, you can believe that. When the Commander finds out that
”
A flash of silver flickered around the corner of the jeweler’s, dim in the smoky light. Nenana was cut off by the flash and whine of three blaster bolts.
The guards slumped to the ground. Dead. The Mandalorian loomed behind them, silent as a ghost with a rucksack bag slung over his shoulder, blaster still half-raised.
Unexpected, sure, but she couldn’t say she was disappointed to see him.
Nenana let her posture slump, tearing off her black helmet and clamping her hand to the wound on her side. Blood oozed between her fingers from where they pressed into the soaked fabric.
“Just can't get enough of me, eh?”
The Mandalorian lifted one of his shoulders in a half-shrug. “I thought you might need help.”
“I had it under control,” she defended lightly, sliding back into her native accent now that she had no reason to do otherwise. And anyway, it felt like the right one to use with him.
His head tipped forward slightly. “Looked like it.”
A smile twitched on her lips at his dry humor. “It would’ve all been fine, but this
” She lifted her hand to show him her bloody palm. “...was slowing me down.”
“That looks bad.” He holstered his blaster and moved to her side, indicating her injury with his head. “You okay?”
Nenana shrugged. “I’ve had worse.”
“Here.” Mando dug into the bag he carried, coming away with a thick gauze patch and peeling off the plastic covering the adhesive side.  “This is bacta-infused, but it’ll still need to be cleaned and bandaged properly.”
“Oh, bacta-infused,” she quipped goodnaturedly as she picked the sopping fabric away from the wound. “What did I do to earn such quality care?”
He shrugged. “You overpaid.”
Nenana huffed a laugh and pulled up the hem of her uniform, exposing just enough of her blood-slicked hip for the Mandalorian to press the bandage firmly in place over the weeping gash.
She gritted through the pain. “Thanks, Mando.”
Mando dipped his head in acknowledgement, smoothing down the edges of the bandage before tugging her shirt back down to cover it.
Nenana sighed and straightened up. “We need to move. They’ll be focused on Sector Seven, but they won’t leave this section undefended for long.”
“Agreed.” Mando adjusted the bag on his shoulder, visor glinting in the half-light as he cast a quick glance about the empty street before fixing back on her. “My ship, or somewhere else?”
Nenana chuckled breathlessly, leading the way around the corner while Mando followed, blaster drawn and on guard. “I know I promised you a date, Mando, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
He stiffened, having caught the suggestive undertone behind her words.
“That... that’s not what I...” he stuttered, making her grin. His helmet jerked to her, but when he saw her smirk he looked away sheepishly, shoulders rolling loose with acceptance. “Yeah, okay.”
She barked out a soft laugh. “Yours.”
Nenana wasn’t sure what to make of the Mandalorian. When he’d first appeared on her homestead, she’d been impressed with his steadfast composure in the face of the olfdo, and then again with his quiet good manners and helpfulness as he worked in her kitchen.
She hadn’t been lying before when she said that she liked him; it was something that she’d readily admit. But now that he’d made it clear that he was interested in something more than a business arrangement and thoroughly charmed her with his gruff awkwardness
she wasn’t sure what to think.
And that uncertainty had nothing to do with him. It had been a long time since Nenana had even considered what he had insinuated
something more. For her entire adult life, she’d thought of relationships as an end to a means; getting close enough to the right person to overhear the right sentence or to plant the right suggestion in the right ear.
That, she knew how to do. But doing it for real - because she meant it; because she wanted to

Nenana wasn’t sure she could leave her old mentality behind enough to manage it.
But that was why she’d been doing all this, right? Putting her life on the line again even after she’d gotten out of the service. Tying up all her loose ends so she could leave her past behind; so that she could have an After.
In the hull of the Mandalorian’s ship, deep in hyperspace, she watched as the warrior, clad in dirty, battered armor cleaned and dressed her wound. His hands were large and strong, worn by blasters and combat, and yet his touch was careful and feather-light.
Yes, she liked him.
She knew he liked her.
But what came next? She couldn’t even imagine what the next step could possibly be. Sure, she’d gone through the motions before, but was struggling to work out how to apply them to the man before her.
They couldn’t exactly go out to dinner.
How did you go on a date with a Mandalorian? Hell, how did someone go on a date with her?
She was at a complete loss.
He probably didn’t have a clue, either.
Maybe it didn’t matter that they didn’t know.
As Nenana watched him work, his helmet bowed close to her shoulder as he focused on getting the bandage just right, she couldn’t help but wonder if maybe this is what the start of the After she’d been wanting looked like.
Whether it was or wasn’t, it was worth the effort of finding out.

Note
I have to admit, I want to read an extra written for your story that's just... the UA teachers freaking out about Izuku. Trying to figure out how to include his noodle form into their lessons, arguing about what to call the noodle when talking about it, and just trying puzzle out how to handle this new detail about their student.
Yagi sat at the conference table, not really taking in the information on the papers in front of him. Izuku had been sleeping when he left but anxieties about the still dissolving and new appearance had him distracted. Tsukauchi was speaking to the room and the teachers were all listening to the collected information.
He was silent the whole time his friend spoke, staring at his hands folded in his lap. It didn't go unnoticed.
He wasn't
too concerned about not speaking at the meeting proper since he had given a complete recount of his time in USJ and the way he saw the villains behave already. He had left out what he knew about Izuku as much as he could and definitively didn't Identify to boy to Tsukauchi. Not without the boy's permission. As the detective left, the room fell momentarily silent.
"So are we just going to gloss over the massive thing we have sitting in our medical wing right now?"
Yagi bristled immediately at the abrasive words Blood King spoke.
"He is not a thing. He is a student and referring to his current situation as such is unsuitable for a hero."
"Well he isn't any recognizable animal is what I mean. Figured it was better than calling him a monster."
Yagi grit his teeth at the response. He almost brought up how they were treating him like a villain. He got shot for gods sake.
"What caused this change to happen to Midoriya is unknown at the moment and should definitely be on the table for discussion. Ectoplasm has multiple clones monitoring the entire wing right now." Midnight slid down slightly in her seat. Her voice was neutral and held authority even as her eyes met Yagi's. The brief eye contact hinted that she knew more than she was letting on.
"Presumably it will wear off. He has already had the more, uh, dramatic features start to disappear." Snipe folded his arms as he spoke up.
Nedzu hummed and the group quieted.
"Presumably the fastest and easiest way to solve the question would be to ask him directly. Something I will definitely do as soon as he is capable of leaving the wing."
"There is no way it is a part of his Quirk. I remember him from the entrance exams and that large of a force would have surely put him on top of the scoreboard." Blood King rumbled.
"To be fair he was still in the top five. He isn't a kid to sneeze at." Mic waved a hand, tone serious. "It could easily have been one of the villain's Quirk as well for all we know."
"Some of the students who saw it seemed to find him quite capable when it came to moving around and such in this
what are we gonna call this form? It's ridiculous to dance around." Cementoss asked.
"Just call him I- Midoriya-kun. There is no point in addressing him differently just because he looks different. Ryukyu is still Ryukyu when she uses her Quirk." Yagi looked up and around the group. He was nearly grateful for the persona he had built up with All Might having the blustering and concerned attitude well established. It could explain away the near slip up.
"So what next? Hound Dog is out preparing his office with things he can use with 1-A. Eraser and Thirteen are both in the med bay recovering. We have
Midoriya-kun who is taking up almost five rooms worth of space in the same wing. And we don't know for sure if or when he is going to change back." Blood King seemed no less riled than when he entered the room for the meeting initially. Tensions had been high ever since the attack happened.
"Next we get the students settled and work on getting classes back on schedule. Closing for too long will make the school look incompetent in terms of handling such attacks. That is not something that we need happening to our image." Nedzu said calmly. He put his paws up on the table, fingers touching but not pressed in a way that gave away anything other than consideration in the principal's mind.
"We have a wonderfully capable faculty and we can handle things as they come. We can reconvene once Midoriya is feeling better and Eraserhead is back in commission. He will need to be here as his homeroom teacher."
It was a clear dismissal. They were to get their own things sorted and allow Nedzu to work his mind one every path they could take.
Yagi stayed seated even as the others filed out. He felt Mic's sharp glance as he finally let the door he was holding for the others shut.
It was a heavy silence.
"You know about this form." Nedzu was straight to the point. Uncharacteristically so almost.
"I do." Yagi sat up straighter and rested his arms on the table, looking to the wall of windows. Avoiding eye contact made saying it easier. "I have known for a short while now."
"I see. It was not pertinent information for you to share then?"
"No. It was not mine to share but no it was not. He is a smart boy and capable to a respectable degree."
"And he knows of you. I hear he asked for you by name already since the year started." Nedzu's amused interest was clear.
"His Quirk gave him a bit of an advantage on that."
They sat again in momentarily silence.
"Go on back to the medical wing. I know you are wanting to. I will send for you when I need to." He got up as he spoke and hopped to the floor.
He was gone before Yagi collected himself enough to bid him farewell.
He wasn't looking forward to the next staff meeting.

One Chicago Promo #2
I had a lot of fun breaking down the first promo we got so I’m going to do this one as well.  This one dropped on the One Chicago twitter account this morning (for me) and is about a minute long (compared to the first one which was only like 20 seconds).
So we open with Dr Charles walking with a crying woman into the ED, and a Boden voice over playing.
Boden voice over: “When this community hurts...”
Cut to black, words “Nov 11″ appear on screen.
Cut to Ruzek reaching out to touch Atwater, looks like they are on scene somewhere (note: this is different to the Ruzwater scene in the first promo which was in a hallway). Also interesting note: it looks like Atwater has blood or something on his face - unknown if this is his or someone else’s.  Both are wearing bullet proof vests.
Boden voice over: “... when it reaches out it’s hand...”
Cut to a screen with words “Wednesday’s Most Watched Dramas”.
Cut to Severide carrying an unconscious woman on a fire scene.
Boden: “... we pull it to it’s feet.”
Cut to Boden sitting in his office, Severide can just be seen in the background.
Cut to word “Return” on screen.
Cut to a scene of 51 responding to a fire.
Boden: “And we respond.”
Cut to Cruz standing on a fire scene, in full gear and mask.  He yells, “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go.”
Cut to a brief clip of Voight exiting his car.
Cut to Casey and other firefighters (presumably from 51 but we can’t really see specifically who it is) about to enter a building.
Cut to Mouch opening the door to the building and flames jump out at him.
Cut to a brief shot of a helicopter over Chicago.
Cut to Crockett, Ethan, Capp, and another unidentified doctor running together, presumably on an accident scene because all are in scrubs and turnout gear.
Cut to a three-way split screen, brief clip of Dr Charles, Will, and Natalie (left to right).
Cut to the word “Med” on screen.
Cut to Will, Ethan, and April wheeling a patient out of an ambulance (entrance to ED can be seen in background.
Cut to Ethan walking through the ED in full gown, mask, and cap.
Cut to Ethan and April standing together in the ED (interesting note: both are wearing blue scrubs as opposed to their usual maroon)
Ethan: “-I’m just worried about you.”
April: “They are sick...”
Cut to a shot of a patient in a bed.
April voice over: “... they are frightened...”
Cut back to April and Ethan.
April: “...and they are alone.”
Cut to April standing in a trauma bay in full hazmat gear.  Ethan can be seen watching her from outside the bay.
April, voice over: “I’m not abandoning them.”
Cut to a closer shot of Ethan’s face.
Cut to a three-way split screen, brief clip of Boden, Casey, and Sylvie (left to right).
Cut to word “Fire” on screen.
Cut to Severide in turn out gear with water dripping off his helmet.
Cut to extremely brief clip of a firefighter in the middle of a blaze (I think it’s Stella but it’s very brief).
Cut to a shot of a doorway on fire.
Cut to a firefighter (I believe it’s Severide) on the ground in a hazy, smoke-filled room.  No mask or helmet on.
Stella, voice over: “Severide!”
Cut to Stella crouching down in the middle of a fire.
Cut to shot of a firefighter helping another downed firefighter (presumably Stella helping Severide).
Boden, voice over: “You are the very definition-”
Cut to Stella in the fire surrounded by other firefighters.
Boden, voice over: “- of a leader.”
Cut to Stella standing with Boden in his office.
Boden: “It’s time everyone got to see it.”
Cut to Severide and another unidentified firefighter (he has 51 on his helmet so he could be an extra from Engine) helping a burned victim out of a building.
Cut to Sylvie driving (maybe the ambo - not completely sure as something about it doesn’t like quite like the ambo to me).
Cut to Sylvie and Mackey entering a living room of an unidentified house.  There is a man lying on the couch.
Sylvie: “CFD paramedics!”
Cut to an unidentified man approaching Sylvie and Mackey from behind, and putting a gun to Sylvie’s head.  The click is audible.  Sylvie gasps but stays still, Mackey looks around at him.
Cut to a different angle, Sylvie is looking up at the man with the gun still pointed at her.
Cut to a three-way split screen, brief clip of Burgess, Atwater, and Upton (left to right).
Cut to the word “P.D.” on screen.
Cut to a clip of Atwater, Ruzek, and Burgess standing on scene.
Cut to a clip of Atwater walking alone down a hallway.
Cut to Voight and Micheal Doyle (Tom Doyle’s father) talking in the street.
Doyle: “He snitched on the police. He’s gotta pay the price.”
Cut to Atwater.  He is out of uniform, exiting a car with his hands raised, while a uniformed police officer has a gun pulled on him.
Cut to Voight and Atwater sitting in Voight’s office.
Voight: “Takes a lot of guts to stand up for what you believe in.”
Cut to a shot of Voight standing in the street wearing his bullet proof vest.
Cut to Atwater sitting at a table with an unidentified man.
Atwater: “Just trying to do the right thing.”
Cut to Hailey and Jay walking up an alley together.
Cut to Jay busting down a door.
Cut to the word “Together” on screen.
Cut to a shot of the Med cast, but focused on Will and Nat.
Cut to the words “We Are” on screen.
Cut to a shot of the Fire cast, focused on Boden and Stella.
Cut to the word “Stronger” on screen.
Cut to Atwater walking alone in a parking garage.
Cut to Atwater confronting Doyle outside somewhere.  Doyle is walking away while Atwater follows.
Atwater: “If I’m the one you want then come for me!”
Cut to a different angle.  Doyle has turned around and is facing Atwater again.
Doyle: “I’m gonna keep coming for you until I have your badge.”
Cut to shot from last season of Atwater standing in the streets while the police cars drive off around him.
So there we go, that’s our second One Chicago promo gearing up for the show’s coming back on the 11th.  I don’t think it gives us anything massively new but rather confirms what the main focus of each show is going to be for the upcoming (and rather reduced) seasons.  But like I did with my last post, I’m gonna break down some interesting notes (I’ll put them under the cut because I had more thoughts that I expected and this post is long enough):
So like the last one this one contains some presumably old-ish footage.  It isn’t really a big deal, just moments like Severide carrying the unconscious woman, the shot of Burgess, Ruzek, and Atwater standing together at a scene, patients getting wheeled into the ED.  They look older and a lot of people have speculated that they’re from past seasons and I’m inclined to think so too.  It doesn’t really mean anything or matter just interesting to note.  They were probably put in to pad out the run time of the promo a bit without giving too much away of the new seasons.
We got the same voiceover from Boden from the last promo which really emphasises the idea of community and connecting with community that I think all three shows (but particularly Med and possibly Fire) are going to focus on in s6, 8, and 9.
We get a new shot of Ruzek and Atwater, different to the one we got in the last promo.  Doesn’t really confirm anything of course, but it does make me wonder if we’re going to get some serious Ruzwater friendship moments, which I’m always down for.
And another interesting thing to speculate about is the blood we can kind of see on Kev’s face in that shot.  It’s hard to tell but it looks to me as though he’s been in a fight or an altercation so I wonder if that’s a result of a confrontation with Michael Doyle.
Another short clip that I really found interesting was that short one of Capp, Ethan, and Crockett all running together.  It’s kind of hard to explain without the visual aide of the video but between Capp being there and how it’s set up it definitely looks like a Fire call that maybe they called for extra medical assistance on, hence Ethan and Crockett being there.  Now I’m not 100% sure so if someone can confirm that would be great but this looks new to me.  I don’t remember anything like this from last season.  So it looks like we’re going to get Ethan and Crockett scenes outside of the hospital which makes me wonder what they’re relationship will be like considering how it was left in s5 considering the April of it all.  I’m sure we’ll get something from them at some point during the season, I just wonder if them being away from the hospital and therefor April will have an effect.  Of course if this is them on a mini crossover with Fire then we probably won’t get that in that specific scene, but again this is all very speculative.
So from this promo it definitely seems to me like April and Ethan dealing with the COVID of it all is going to be something that either brings them together or drives them apart for good.  We get that exchange between them, and then we get Ethan watching her with a patient, and idk if it’s just me, but Ethan seemed worried for her.  So I do wonder if going through this, especially because it seems like it’s going to be primarily those two (along with Lanik) that are on the front lines of COVID, is going to be something that mends the relationship between them.  I’m not necessarily against a Sextoi reunion, but I’m also not excited for it if it means more bullshit like s5.  If they’re going to do it, they better do it right.
In that same vein, I don’t know about anyone else but this promo definitely makes me think that Stella’s potential promotion is going to be a big thing this season.  We get Boden telling her she’s a leader, we see her rescuing Severide I believe during a call, we get a shot of her and Boden together later in the promo, but yeah I think this is going to be one of the major multi ep arcs.  Which I love because I’m always there for more Stella Kidd.
And then we have Brett and Mackey getting held at gun point which is just like woah!  I wonder if this is the crazy 10 seconds at the end of 9x01 that Derek warned us about.  I mean, it’s gotta be right?  And as a Brettsey shipper I have to wonder, and would love to see, if Brett and Casey bond over this experience.  Because Casey went through something similar in I want to say season 7? When a gun was pointed at him and it jammed, and basically lead to an existential crisis.  I love me some angst so I would love to see Casey be there for Brett through that.
And just a random interesting side note.  We get a shot of Sylvie driving what I presumed to be the ambo.  But someone noticed on twitter that the dimensions are slightly off, the seats are the wrong colour, and you can’t see the window that shows into the back of the ambo, so she’s possibly driving another car, in her ambo gear?  Wearing gloves?  Don’t really know what’s going on with that one, gonna have to think on it a bit more.
And we been knew but clearly this Atwater/Doyle thing is gonna be a major season 8 storyline.  Well I mean the amount of time devoted to it in the promos suggests it is anyway.  And honestly, it better be.  Atwater deserves to have a major story like this.  I don’t want it wrapped up in the first episode.
I do wonder if the shot of Atwater presumably getting pulled over by a cop is going to be something that was specifically orchestrated by Michael Doyle or if it’s going to be a slightly unconnected storyline that ties into the bigger theme of reform that this season is pushing.
And finally just a comment on Atwater’s line right near the end: “If I’m the one you want then come for me!” which kind of makes me wonder if Doyle tries to hurt Atwater through someone else, either Jordan, or the others in Intelligence, or Vanessa.  There’s lot of speculation that Jordan is going to die, which is a definite possibility.  Or this scene could be related to the uniformed officers not showing up for Intelligence and thereby putting them in danger (which is a plot line I definitely think has been teased for season 8).
So anyway yeah, those are my thoughts.  I hope you liked this break down and found it interesting and helpful since some of the clips are so short that it can be hard to pick up on absolutely everything.  And going through it slowly and transcribing it actually helped me pick up all the little details which was cool.  But anyway yeah, the promo is on the One Chicago twitter account and is probably on the yt account as well, so check it out and let me know what you thought of it :D

Relic Keepers: Awakening of the Red Lily (Chapter 2) - Original Fiction
AN: Wow, two updates this week; I’m on a roll. Anyway, hope you’ll enjoy reading~
Ao3 | Wattpad | Inkitt | FictionPress
Chapter 2:
Eishirou had expected Zayne’s demeanour to change immediately after learning that his new roommate was a Passive. And for a brief moment, it did. He looked perturbed; his eyes somewhat vacant as his smile slipped. He soon recovered that smile, however, and nodded his head surprisingly nonchalantly.
“Ok, cool. Anyway, looks like you’re going to have to escort me to Hanger 12. New here. Don’t know where it is.”
Well, he took it rather well. Although, that didn’t necessarily rule out the possibility that he would ask for another room later. So, it was best not to get too attached or interested in the guy.
Thinking about it, Eishirou hadn’t heard of an Elite rooming with a Passive. The administration preferred to keep the two classes separate. Why? Who knows. It was something they just did.
Maybe this was a test to a possible future change. Honestly, who knows what they had going around in their heads up there.
“Ah, makes sense,” Eishirou replied in a hopefully equally nonchalant way. “Just let me grab some things and we can take off. Mustn’t keep Ernesta waiting.” Not if they want to keep their heads.
They moved to their different sides of the bedroom after that. And worked in silence.
Eishirou grabbed the usual on-field gear; excavation tools (brush, hand shovel, etc), communicator, tablet to document findings, and more importantly his medical kit.
He was still classed as a rookie in regards to his Medic training, but he knew enough to heal minor wounds and injuries, and to fix a headache or two. He was still learning to do triage and hoped to eventually learn out to do out on the field operations. Though, he also hoped that he never had to use such skills!
With everything he needed in his carry bag, Eishirou lifted it up over his head and rested the strap across his chest. He then twisted the bag around so that it rested behind him rather than at his side.
“Right, ready to get going?” Eishirou asked as he turned around.
“Just a sec,” Zayne answered with his back to him. He took a moment to flare out his jacket and pulled it on.
White jacket with the Academy’s emblem etched onto the back, and it was over that emblem, stitched into the material sat a Wing Holster, allowing for Elites to concentrate their mana and take flight. The winged emblem of Elites was printed on the right leg of his black pants. The usual uniform for members of Elite Teams. Sat snug on his hips were two holsters. And he could see the stock and hilt of hand-held weaponry. Through the use of a mechanical devices called Mana Holsters, Elites were better able to manifest and manage their mana, turning it into physical manifestations of weapons.
Having two such devices was rare, even for Elites. The guy must be pretty good at what he did. Whatever that was. Well, that had to be a given, right? Especially if someone liked Ernesta hunted him down to get him on her team. If the rumours were to be believed.
After adjusting his jacket, Zayne glanced in his direction and gave him a quick grin. “Let’s go.”
The quickest way to reach the hangers was by jumping on the electric tram that intertwined throughout the entirety of the campus. The Academy sat smack in the middle of Araluen, and it was a town in of itself. To say that it would take an hour to hike from one end of the campus to the other was no exaggeration.
Thankfully, there was a tram station close to the entrance of the dorms.
The journey to the hangers was a relatively quiet one between Eishirou and Zayne. He appeared deep in thought, absentmindedly glancing at his surroundings. He was likely musing about what their assignment was going to entail. His role was far different than the one that Eishirou had, after all.
Finally, they reached the departing bays of the hangers. Despite the number, Hanger 12 was actually the closest to reach.
A group of people stood in the hanger, by the helicopter that would take them out to their assignment work site.
Professor Jacob Chryses was immediately recognisable. He was the tallest one there. Over six feet, likely nearing seven. Muscular man, with tanned skin that indicated that he had spent years upon years out in the field, getting his hands and boots dirty.
Jacob spoke with Ernesta. She was easily the tallest woman in all of the academy. She was also a rather practical woman. Blonde hair to her shoulders with a short fringe. Her clothing was sturdy, even around her rather large bust. She always wore a rather peaceful expression on her face. Even in the midst of battle. But that peaceful expression could turn dark at the drop of a hat. And she could be terrifying.
Eishirou, thankfully, hadn’t been on the receiving end of that dark stare. And he didn’t want to.
With her was the rest of Team 3.
Tatsu, the second tallest of the team. Short black hair, sharp green eyes, and a small grin that was oozing with confidence. Everything about him presented confidence, from his broad shoulders, to his wide leg stance. He, fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on point of view) he had the abilities to back up that confidence.
Next to him was the team’s other guy member, Leon. Short dark brown hair, square jawline, and light blue eyes. He was a fraction taller than Tatsu, and he did possess a strong sense of confidence. He was polite enough, though. Civil. Didn’t start any unwanted confrontations.
Finally, there was Rinka. Honestly, she looked completely out of place amongst the team. Short, quiet, meek in some ways. Her long hair was a light lavender in colour, and her eyes a vivid silver. By appearance, she didn’t look like she belonged on the team, yet alone out in the battlefield. But when she was in battled, her mana weapon engaged, her personality did a one-eighty. Still quiet, but lethally so.
Eishirou didn’t really like nor get along with Tatsu. He looked down at him. And he meant that figuratively and literally. He appeared polite in front of the others, but it was incredibly easy to tell that he just barely tolerated his presence.
He got along with the rest of them. He couldn’t necessarily say that they were friends. Acquaintances at best. Things were simply civil.
Ernesta was the first to notice their approach. A peaceful smile graced her lips as she turned her half-lidded, almost lazy eyes in their direction. “Good. You’re both here. We’re ready to board and leave.”
“Ah, Eishirou,” Jacob gave him one of his usual broad grins. “Just on time, as always. I see you’ve already met the newest member of Team 3.”
“Well, you see
” Eishirou was going to explain that he and Zayne were somehow roommates now when Ernesta interrupted.
“Jacob, best to board now,” she suggested as she folded her arms nonchalantly under her bust. “I need a moment to speak with my team.”
Her expression changed into that of realisation and she turned to face Jacob fully. “Before that, though. Professor Chryses, I must ask; Should the worst-case scenario occur, who is it that you wish for us to protect?”
Huh. That was a question Eishirou hadn’t heard asked before.
Jacob’s response was equally surprising.
“Eishirou.”
Eishirou was slightly startled at the lack of hesitation in Jacob’s response. “Come on, Jacob
”
“No arguing,” Jacob replied sternly and folded his arms across his chest to emphasize the point. “You are the only medic here. Besides, your skills are invaluable to the research community.”
Once again, Ernesta interrupted before Eishirou had to chance to say anything further. “Understood. Please board and make yourselves comfortable.”
The lack of scepticism in Ernesta’s reply was a little bit startling, too. But Eishirou knew he couldn’t argue against the both of them. Part of what Prof said was right; he was a medic. And appeared to be the only one on this assignment.
As Jacob turned to stepped onto the helicopter, Eishirou dutifully followed.
“Ground crew is already there,” Jacob explained as they took their seats. As Eishirou sat down in the seat in front of him, he pulled out a tablet and handed it toward him. “Here. Take this time to read through the notes.”
Eishirou rested his bag by his feet and retrieved the tablet. “Sure.”
He got himself comfortable in his seat and stretched his legs out in front of him. He switched the tablet on and started to flick through the documents and photos.
First up was a photo of what he assumed was the stone tablet he was requested to help investigate. The stone was a rusty red in colour, and in many different pieces. Even so, there were visible etchings on the stone. Scrawling of patterns or words, it was hard to tell in the photo. Though, it did indicate that the stone had been weathered by the elements. So, it was safe to say it was old.
“So, an in and out assignment?” Eishirou asked as he flipped to a photo of the area where the stone was discovered.
“That’s what we’re planning at present,” Jacob answered as he leaned back into his seat, too. “Need to do a survey of the area before further investigation. ShadowDwellers are known to inhabit that location in particular.”
Honestly, the dangerous creatures were found everywhere outside the city. Sometimes inside, too.
From what the photos of the area indicated, it would be easy for a ShadowDweller or two to sneak up on them. The tall trees curled around the seemingly naturally formed paths. The bark of the trees was that of dark brown, but the leaves were a vivid green. The canopy appeared dense.
The assignment had better be quick if they didn’t want to contend with the darkness.
“What’s our work crew like?”
“Passives. Field researchers, mostly.”
Yeah, that made sense. From these documents, it appeared that they were planning to gather the remnants of the stone tablet and bring it back to the research facilities.
“Any thoughts?” Jacob asked him, something he usually did on their assignments.
“The etchings on the stones are unusual,” Eishirou replied. “But I should be able to work out what they mean when I lay my hands on the stones.”
“They don’t match those of the Main Land.”
Yeah, they didn’t.
Eishirou idly flipped back through the photos as Zayne and the other members of Team 3 boarded the helicopter. He was pulled from his research when Zayne surprisingly took a seat next to him, leaning back into it with his arm hanging over the back. The other members of his team sent him a perplexed look as they took their seats away from where Eishirou and Jacob sat.
“Finally,” Zayne practically whined. “I swear, no one warned me that the briefings were the most tedious thing about assignments.”
Eishirou made the small observation that Zayne’s arm was hanging over the back of his chair. “Tell me about it. Unfortunately, the vast majority of bodyguard assignments are also pretty boring. If everything goes well.”
“Still better than sitting there and listening to someone prattle on and on.”
A smile abruptly made its way to Eishirou’s lips. “Don’t let Ernesta hear that.”
Zayne winced. “Right.”
Just as those words left his lips, Ernesta walked down the aisle, causing Zayne to jump in his seat. Which, in turn, prompted Eishirou to snigger behind his tablet.
“Prepare for flight,” she ordered.
That simply meant ensure that your butt was fully planted on the seat while the helicopter manoeuvred from the hanger and into the air. Lift off and the landing was always the most troublesome of the flight. When in the air, the trip was smoother. Unless they encounter turbulence, of course.
Eishirou returned his attention back to the files in the tablet and idly flipped through the findings so far. Which honestly wasn’t much. It did detail notes on the surrounding area around the remains of the stone tablet. But little else.
As the flight smoothed out, Zayne leaned over in his direction to peer at the tablet, too. Making no attempt to hide his noisiness. “Is that your assignment?” he asked as his shoulder bumped against his.
Eishirou nodded as he returned to the photos. “Hm. A stone tablet was discovered. Seems that it might be pointing to a set of ruins that haven’t been documented yet.”
“C-can I see?”
The meek, feminine voice caused Eishirou to lift his head up. He lowered his tablet to find none other than Rinka before him. Her hands meekly fidgeting in front of him, a light flush to her cheeks, and looking rather shy.
“Hm? You’re interested?” Eishirou asked, surprise in his voice.
“Sure, why not?” Zayne was the one to answer, he having confusion in his voice.
Well, Elites had better things to think about. Usually. But it was nice that the two seemed curious.
Eishirou shrugged and flipped to the main photo of the stone tablet. “Alright. Here.”
He handed the tablet over to Rinka, who quickly received it. She then plopped herself down on the seat next to Zayne and rested the tablet on his lap. Zayne kept his arm hanging over the back of Eishirou’s chair as he leaned over in Rinka’s direction to look at the photo, too.
“Hmm, it looks like a pile of rubble to me,” he commented after a moment.
“Well, it is now.” Eishirou rolled his eyes. He leaned over, stretched his arm across Zayne to tap at the photo to enlarge it. “But there’s ancient writings on the stones. See?”
Zayne squinted his eyes. “Oh yeah.”
Rinka lifted her gaze from the tablet and looked over at Eishirou. “I-is it true that there are ancient relics that have been infused with mana?”
Oh, that was a surprising question.
“Yup,” Eishirou answered with a smile. “And some say that those relics had been infused with mana long before the Bombardment.”
“R-really?”
Hm. Rinka seemed genuinely interested. Better yet, Ernesta was letting her engage with him and his side of the assignment. For the rest of the journey, she allowed the three of them to chat amicably. Rinka meekly asked questions about relics and what it was that Chroniclers like Eishirou actually did.
She was very inquisitive. And Zayne seemed just as interested.
It was kinda nice.
But all good things had to come to an end.
“You two, time to prepare for landing,” Ernesta ordered, her tone surprisingly light. She seemed amused by the three of them, too.
Rinka returned the tablet to Eishirou, squeaking out a small ‘thanks’ before she got to her feet. She then made her way over to her teammates. Zayne uttered a huff as he pushed himself to his feet, too. He joined the others, too.
“The vegetation is too dense for the helicopter to land close to the investigation site,” Ernesta explained. “We’ll have to land in the nearest clearing and walk the rest of the way.”
With that said, Team 3 took on a defensive stance by the helicopter’s exit doors.
Eishirou took that time to return the tablet to Jacob and set about getting himself ready to disembark. The best thing he could do was to ensure that he kept out of the way of Team 3 and do his own job as efficiently as possible.
It took a few minutes for the helicopter to settle on a landing spot and to become still. Eishirou stayed in his seat, however. He knew the drill. The Elites would disembark first to secure the area. The other members of their quick excavation crew were already there, but better to be safe than sorry.
Finally, Ernesta gave them the all clear and Eishirou hopped out of the helicopter with Jacob close behind.
As he stepped out onto the green grass and out from beneath the helicopter blades, Eishirou took a moment to look around at his new surroundings.
The clearing of the helicopter landing was flat and green. A circle amongst a large, lush forest. The greenery was dotted with colourful flowers; reds, pinks, and blues. They stood out against the vivid green moss and golden bark of the trees.
The trees were tall, the trunks sturdy and thick. The roots spiralled outwards along the ground, intertwined with flowery shrubbery. The forest was quite old. Very old. It was likely that no one had trekked through those tall trees for a very long time.
But they were going in. The stone tablet wasn’t about to come to them, now was it?
“How far is it?” Eishirou asked.
Jacob pulled out his personal tablet and tapped at the screen. “Thankfully, it appears to be a ten-minute hike at the most.” A half grin appeared on his lips. “A two-minute return trip if we’re running.”
Well, he certainly hoped they didn’t have to run out of the forest screaming!
Ernesta took the lead once more. “I’ll take the lead with Professor Chryses and Tatsu will take the back. Zayne; take the left. Rinka, Leon, you take the right. Be prepared for ShadowDwellers. Everyone finds that acceptable?”
There was a chorus of agreeing replies, some of them begrudgingly.
Ernesta gave a placid smile. “Very well, let’s move forward, shall we?”

Humans are spa- ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING
following the acquisition of communication between humans and aliens.
Hope you all enjoy; send me your questions, comments, prompts critiques, and messages.
The chief medical team for the Galactic Assembly was nervous, very, very nervous. They shifted against their biohazard suits and masks waiting, staring towards the large, pod entrance enclosing the decontamination unit. They could hear movement from within just under the sound of the fans and the sprays.
The assembly had contacted them shortly after news of the humans had begun spreading. The first encounter had been kept under wraps as they attempted to establish communication with the deadly new predator species. Months had gone by before rudimentary communication could be perused, and the strange creatures verbalized their desire to take the galactic hand of cooperation and join in peace talks with the Galactic Assembly.
Presidential representatives of the UN on Earth (the current ruling power) had spoken shortly with the Assembly chairman through intermediate channels expressing her hesitation as well as her excitement on eventually meeting face to face for talks. She made a surprisingly trusting first offer to them asking what they would require for humans to eventually become members of the alliance.
So, first thing was first, they requested visitation from a human to be examined, cataloged, tested, and genetically fingerprinted for reference in their system. If they were to join the alliance, humans would be given the rights to be treated in medical facilities within the assembly’s sphere of influence, so they would need all the information possible additionally they would be forced to create new immunizations against unknown disease that the humans would likely bring with them. At first, the humans had been hesitant and skeptical about this, but after a few days, a volunteer had assumable stepped forward.
They had taken a brave step, walking onto an alien ship alone to be carted across the galaxy to an isolated medical facility surrounded by creatures, alien to them, and trust that he would be safe and respected while they did so. Luckily translation speed had increased since rudimentary communication was established, so they were relatively sure communication wouldn’t be much of an issue.
Just then, the pod doors opened with a hiss releasing a waft of vapor into the room.
They all held incredibly still as the creature ducked out of the doorway one hesitant footstep after the other.
It was
. Horrifying, and incredible at the same time. At least seven unit’s tall, it somehow managed locomotion on only two limbs. Its body rose and fell from inside expanding and contracting a layer of glistening skin cream in color. Both upper and lower limbs had a single major bending join in the middle and were topped by five separate digits. Those on the feet where shorter than those on the hands.
Its face betrayed its predatory nature with wide, forward-facing eyes green in color and containing a single aperture. The protrusion in the middle of its face flared tasting particles on the air. A slit below this protrusion opened to reveal a line of sharp teeth and a tube descending downwards into its body.
It stood before them watching them with eyes. A quick jerk of flesh over orbs, serving to lubricate the eyes which glistened in the light of the bay room.
“Um
.. Hello? Is
. This thing on?”
The translators were slow to boot up as the creature hummed and hissed at them, but the translation finally booted up. The room relaxed a small bit doing their best to identify the body language of the strange creature.
The head medical operator greeted him with a traditional movement,’ Greetings, human, we as your permission to begin our procedures.”
The human stepped further into the room. Analysis of its movements indicated a series of minute micro movements in the feet, the legs, the posterior and the back as it moved. Somehow, the creature was unconsciously balancing itself using micro spasms of the fibrous muscle and connective tendon.
The apertures in the human’s eyes widened, it showed its teeth, “wow
. Cool.”
Confusion
. Cool meant cold? Was the creature cold.
It must have sensed their confusion, “Sorry, I meant. Yes
.. er, and for further reference sometimes we used words for different reasons cool means cold but also um interesting, or good .”
That made no sense, but who were they to argue with this creature, it could have tossed them across the room if it really wished, a truth that was only becoming more evident as they examined more closely, taking samples and asking questions, running diagnostics, and running scans.
The creature was an odd marvel of predatory power. Its body was built around an inner skeletal structure specifically designed to protect the vital organs. A cage of bone wrapped around its most vital innards while its skull encased all cortical zones. The cord that took signals from the cortical zone to the body was locked inside a line of bone that ran down the creature’s back. Each bone was up to ten times stronger than any similar structure that they have ever seen. An organic micro-pocket structure made them lighter and stronger than they had any right to be.
Oxygen was forced through the system by a complex for chambered muscle that literally squeezed and forced the oxygen-rich fluid through the body system. Oxygen was taken directly from the lungs, a massive set of wind bags causing the contractions at the creature’s chest. As a direct result, the muscular tissue was allowed to swell up to 20+ times the capacity it normally would in any other species using the oxygen to fuel the cells.
Samples taken from the digestive system was a little more questionable. The corrosive substance nearly burned through their test tubes, and they were forced to move it into increased containment scrambling before the contents could spill out and burn through their other equipment.
They took a step back cautiously from the human. Was something wrong with it, had the decontamination fluids caused internal issues? Was it about to liquefy from the inside?
The human sat the center of the room appearing no more perturbed than he should have been.
He looked confused, “something wrong.”
“Are you
. Feeling well?” They ventured hesitantly, “The sample
. It
.. is very
. Acidic.”
“Oh, The human waved a hand, “Just stomach acid, that’s normal. Its ok through, my stomach will replace the lining before it burns through.
They stared, and walked more carefully about the human.
The more they looked, the more fear they had, and the more cautionary their report became.
The creatures could distinguish a very specific range of the light spectrum negating the use of infrared communication or camouflage. Their visual processing system was wired for moving objects, and precise timing. Tracking prey movement would have been an innate ability for these predators. Special mucus membranes in the face could detect chemical particles in the air, and identify them.
Communication came up to a system not dissimilar to echo location. They were able to pick up the smallest vibration in the air around them, even overlapping and pick out what it meant.
And then there was the bacteria, the sheer amount of it crawling on the skin, inside the mouth and into the stomach was astonishing and almost terrifying. There was more bacteria on, and inside the creature’s body than there were cells to make up the creature. Most of them didn’t affect the creature, and others seemed to help it digest its food.
The synthesis of vaccinations and chemical deterrents was immediately ordered by the galactic assembly. This creature was a walking biohazard. Bacteria came out in its breath, was sluffed from its skin and festered inside its mouth with increasing degree, and yet is stood there like it wasn’t festering in a walking pool of disease.
And dear Nebulon, the thing would not shut up, the sheer and vast amount of questions it asked ranged from impossible to answer to completely arbitrary.
What is this made of?
What is that?
What is that for?
How many?
How much?
It was aggressively infuriating, but its curiosity was so endearing that they didn’t have the heart to tell it how annoying it was increasingly becoming. Even with its aggressive need to touch ad examine everything in the room.
They explored the enviornment with their eyes, and most annoyingly, with their hands constantly telling him not to touch anything, but their pleading falling on deaf ears. Before they could yell at the creature for being annoying, it would apologize so pathetically, and so heartfelt that they were clammed shut. Eventually, their only option was just to give him something to play with, while they continued their work. At first they made the mistake of giving him something simple, and it was quickly discarded to the side and ignored in favor of something more interesting and more complicated.
It was the longest, hardest and most interesting study they had ever done.
They were terrified the entire time
A memo to the Galactic Assembly and Anyone Else Concerned.
Conclusion: Danger levels 80%
To begin with the dangers concerned, the human is the greatest of the apex predators that we have seen. Touch taste smell hearing and sight are all designed for the purpose of hunting. The body, despite its fleshy appearance, has a heeling factor nearly 100% faster than any we have seen. The bones and the organs are encased to make the human as durable as possible.
The likelihood of their predatory instincts becoming a problem is questionable, but should be noted.
The human body is a cesspool of bacteria and disease and immediate cautionary action should be taken.

.
Also, the human is ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING, completely maddening. Not only are they hunters of meat, but they are hunters of information. They are ravenous for our knowledge and they will ask countless questions tirelessly as if they have the ability to store the information with impunity. They will ask to the pint of madding you and themselves, and when you do not give the answers they will seek the answers themselves through touch if they must,
PLEASE do not allow a human near anything you do not wish them to touch, because they will do it.
