Thoughts beneath the cut:

My first aesthetic/moodboard! I challenged myself to make some art for media I liked using only stock images as well as trying to recreate the style used, and Who's Lila became an easy choice once I discovered the dithering option in GIMP.

I enjoyed trying out different color options, choosing and arranging the different pictures. Maybe in the future I will try out some of the different color palettes this game has to offer, for now, I decided to stick with the 'standard' one.

Making this gave me the inspiration and confidence to try out making different aesthetics for other art pieces/media as well, so that is an additional plus. I also made some more Who's Lila pieces as well.

Students in the cafeteria have decided to make a game of eating their fruits and veggies—which is to say, instead of simply eating their food as a cooked ingredient or a snack between classes, many of them have decided to make it a game! Inspired by the ninja of Hoshido, it is called: Produce Slicer! Students compete to slice the most food in just a minute, earning bragging rights for being the top scorer. The staff don’t seem to be too fond of all the mess though—are you on the side of the game or the dining hall staff who have to clean up afterwards? [Grants Sword +1]

It appears a group of monster hunters is visiting Garreg Mach, known for their unconventional use of glaives that utilize secondary automatons to control the battlefield. With dozens of heads on their walls, the group has invited those at the monastery to join them on a hunt. But, why is it that this creature seems to have a consciousness that rivals that of yours? And why is it pleading for you to help it? [Grants Lance +1]

As the chill leaves Fódlan with the coming of spring, in comes the prime time for flower viewing. A nearby town boasting of their beautiful blooms subsequently finds itself in a pickle: namely, it has been discovered that these trees are highly invasive, and the order has gone out for them to be cut down immediately. Are you here to catch a glimpse of something you may never see again, or have you been sent to get to work? [Grants Axe +1]

You've heard it here first, folks: time to show which house is the best. Sign up here and show pride in your class by picking up your very own paint-filled arrows! Who can paint the monastery in their glorious house colors before the twelve hours are up (or the administration shuts it down)? No problem, you and your squad grab your trusty weapons and head off to put a stop to their crimes… except the villains evidently came more prepared than you, and the next thing you know, your equipment is all gone! A noblewoman from Adrestia is pleading that you rescue her wife, who she claims hasn’t aged a day in nearly a decade and is not the person she fell in love with. She believes dark magic is at work and the portrait painted of her wife has the woman’s soul sealed inside, which seems to only grow more and more grotesque with each passing day. [Grants Reason +1]

Studies at the academy are all about preparing oneself for the future, and this consideration has led to an exercise on…parenting! A lucky few students and professors have been chosen to raise awareness for a monumental new program. Assigned with caring for a magically powered doll that requires rocking, reassuring, and cosseting (that will totally not scream and cry at set intervals through the night) what will you and your aptly dubbed ‘partner’ do to meet the challenge? That’s right - the time has come for the Academy to learn the power of the Berserk staff, whether they are ready or not! NEW! A new establishment has popped up just outside the monastery grounds, run by a mysterious proprietor. What is it in the business of? NEW! An inventor from distant lands shows up one day, claiming to have created the ultimate extreme sport: sky-diving! Get on the winged mount of your choice, soar high in the air, and jump off. But don’t worry about becoming a pancake! The inventor has something called a “parachute” which, when released, will provide you a way to float safely to the ground, or if you’re daring, your mount’s back after a few tricks. The academy sees great potential in this to aid new and old fliers alike on how to manage being knocked off your mount–will you partake in this daring exercise? [Grants Flying+1]

NEW! It happened out of the blue one morning: a huge gaggle of young children toddling all over the Monastery! It doesn’t take long for someone to fill you in on the nitty gritty: that these are indeed the same students and staff everyone knows, and no they don’t know how this happened to make them like this. All that matters for now is that there are way too many children to watch over until this wears off and not enough hands left. Are you one of the lone adults left battling exhaustion and tantrums, or are you one of the children wondering why the grown-up looks about ready to cry? [Grants Any Skill +1]

i think we as a society should move on from anything "objective" relating to art that doesn't literally describe an aspect of the piece (ie. this sound is louder than the other, this color is particularly bright, etc.) im tired of convention being treated as the standard - if a work is messy, it does not make it any objectively worse. a harsh, inconsistent mix can convey emotions in a way clean and balanced ones cannot. perhaps you find the dialogue stilted, but maybe that stiltedness creates a certain feel more natural speech can't. experiences, too, differ. one person may find an overwhelming, fast game fun while others get stressed. perhaps you were turned off from an uncomfortable film, but maybe you watched because it was uncomfortable. convention as what should be strived for is a limit to creativity on both artists and the audience. standards may inspire some to purposefully break them, but more often than not encourage following.

MC Design Guide

• Setting:

Precolonial fantasy world, heavily inspired by cultures in the Philippines, particularly in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Pan-atepán is the island where the game takes place. In real-life terms, the Sentinel is Igorot by default. If you live in CAR (especially if you don't use Igorot to refer to yourself), feel free to incorporate parts of your culture into the setting.

• Background:

Race is a social construct that does not exist in Pan-atepán. However, the Sentinel and every human in the game would be considered nonambiguous people of color by today's standards.

Note - I am appreciative of fanworks for the LSS and also encourage headcanons, even if they go against the established plot. Still, any LSS fanworks of humans, including the Sentinel, where this is not followed, will be ignored by the blog.

• Name:

Use names or words that derive from Malayo-Polynesian languages, or more specifically, a name or word derived from Kankanaey or Ilokano languages.

The name could be a word describing a hope, dream, or phenomenon. It can also be nature-related.

• Pronouns:

Customizable and changeable anytime.

• Age:

25 years old.

• Gift:

This divine gift will either be the ability to see pieces of the past or visions of the possible future.

• Weapon:

Bunéng knives - Often used for agriculture and cutting sugar cane and grass, it is also a stabbing weapon. It has a wide tip that narrows near the handle, making it seem leaf-shaped.

Kalis sword - Mainly used in combat, it is a double-edged slashing weapon. The blade is shaped in a wavy pattern and the surface is marked by swirling lines.

Wasey axe - Occasionally used for beheadings, it is also used for carving furniture and building coffins as it is a hooking weapon. With crescent shaped edges, it is a concave blade featuring a spike on the poll side.

Pana bow - Used for both hunting and warfare, it is a ranged weapon. The bow and arrow are made of bamboo, and the bow has a rattan string while the arrows are tipped with bone stained by poison.

Hinalung spear - Able to switch between dagger and spear, the double-edged blade is primarily used for hunting and foraging as it is a dual use weapon. With a hollow handle, the dagger can be mounted on a pole and used as a spear.

• Clothing:

The clothing can be one of the main three styles.

Wrap-around Skirt (tapis) with thick belts (bagket) - A feminine garb. To wear the matching attire for the torso is optional. An init weave for a top may also be worn.

Loincloth (wanes) - A masculine garb. To wear the matching attire for the torso is optional. An init weave for a top may also be worn.

Init weave - This is a gender-neutral outfit typically worn as a set. Woven from the harvested energy of the sun, the top is a collarless shirt, while the bottom article may be a skirt or a pair of pants. The length of the sleeves, skirts, and pants, are highly dependent on the weaver. The fabric produced is light yellow, and dyes are often used to change the color.

• Gender and Sexuality:

This is determined by the player.

• Appearance:

Eye color, hair type, hair color, complexion, and height are permanently set. As for hairstyle, facial hair, scars, clothing, and jewelry, they may change if you choose a different look when prompted.

• Character Traits:

These traits are customizable up until Chapter 5 when these stats will be permanently locked. It may be noted if you act differently than before, but that's as far as it goes. These traits are one or the other.

You were going to get a nice, properly typed description for this piece today, but then Google Chrome decided it hates me and crashed with no warning whatsoever and DeviantArt's new Studio Submission Portal has the exact same STUPID fatal flaw that kept me using the Sta.sh Editor to get art submissions ready for years instead of the standard submission portal—It either can't or won't reliably auto-save as you type. 🤬🤬🤬🤬 [Context: I start typing out these long descriptions on dA first since that's been my primary posting place for years and I'm used to their font, formatting, and emoticons; And only semi-recently I started copy & pasting them over here on Tumblr, which is why this rant is still relevant here.]

Just when I had about warmed up to the "Studio," here I am FURIOUS all over again that DeviantArt, in all their infinite wisdom and updates no one asked for, STILL cannot be bothered to program freaking auto-save into the submission portal AND they took away the ability edit text in Sta.sh so you don't even have an on-site alternative option that will auto-save anymore.

I'm so mad. I'm SO mad. At the core I'm not even that mad specifically about the content I lost today, but the everything else it represents and is conceptually tied into. And I so don't have time to really get into that right now because I have to re-do something for this description other than just being angry because I have other things to do today and this has already set my schedule back badly enough as it is.

Allow me one more moment to scream in frustration:

Alright. Now then.

You get a very basic bullet point list actually about the art because that's all I think I can manage through my ire at the moment:

This prompt, much like Day 11 serves as more evidence that I didn't curate the list as carefully as I could have. There was very much a missed opportunity to make this the word for Day 8, or maybe at least 16 or 24 since those are multiples of 8.

I opted to keep things simple for the mandala. Not as simple as just using the "8" shape over an over because I thought that would be too limiting and boring. I Googled "Octonary" to see if anything visually helpful would come up and found this webpage talking about "Octonary" paths that the Knight piece might take in a Chess game.

After starting with a big Octagon as a base, I took inspiration from the diagrams on that webpage to fill the space. I started with a big 4-point division from one of the diagrams that resembles the iron cross, but ended up modifying the lines into more of an 8-point star shape because the 4-point divison wasn't working for me with all the other 8-based motifs.

And I did still use a fair bit of those 8-based shapes to try and bring in some more softness since the Chess-inspired bits were all very straight and angular.

In general I tried to work in 8's where possible, but there were some things that slipped through that I'm purposefully not going to call specific attention to beyond this sentence acknowledging they exist.

More interesting that the mandala itself is probably the color scheme. How do you make a color scheme based on the number 8? 🤔 Traditionally, that would've been more difficult to answer. But digitally, I was able to take advantage of hex codes. I specifically looked up colors that only use the number 8 and/or 0 and started with those, and then at the very end added in two light grays that also add B and E because I needed some additional lightness I just wasn't getting with the 8's and 0's alone.

More specifically, if you're curious, my exact color palette was:

#888888 - Base medium grey for the whole thing

#000888 - dark blue

#800008 - darkish red

#080808 - near-black

#888000 - dull "gold"

#B8B8B8 - lighter grey

#E8E8E8 - lightest grey

I did toy with #088888 (teal-ish) and #800080 (dark fuchsia-y), but after reviewing my options for what I might use as a song pairing on Instagram (remember I mentioned that being a unique challenge with these on Day 12), they felt a little too at odds with the color scheme made by the others.

I do think the dark blue made this color scheme come out a little more similar to previous days that I really wanted, but by the time I realized that I could not be bothered going back to change it, so it is what it is.

If the coloring looks a little funny otherwise, I tried to add the colors still using just figure-8 shapes and then blending/blurring the splotches out to get better coverage. Probably kind of pointless and uncessary considering how the final product looks, but I couldn't help myself.

I don't think this is the strongest piece of the month by a long shot, but as I've said before they can't all be super complex or amazing. [And for the record, I thought that before the lost-description mishap.] In any case, I like my solution to the color scheme "problem" and there are still some good ideas/motifs within the mandala, even if the whole package maybe didn't come together as nicely as it could have.

...I think that's everything I wanted to mention. It's hard to tell after being so thoroughly derailed from my original thought-flow. 😠

But that's at least all I can think of at the moment, so I should probably leave this here and get on with cross-posting. Cross-posting is normally my least favorite part of the process and starting off with such a bag experience trying to get this far does not feel like a good omen for how that's going to go.

There was a time when people always associated licensed games with poor quality. This is not always true, as there were many good games of the 16-bit era based on Disney properties that defied this rule. Mickey Mania, The Lion King, Castle of Illusion… Pinocchio (published by Capcom in Japan) is sadly not among them. While Pinocchio is a very good effort, it has a few serious problems and some uneven difficulty despite being a very easy game. There are better platform games out there on the Super Famicom though, so it’s not essential by any means, just an okay game with some very good graphics and sound. There were Sega Genesis and Game Boy versions released in the USA and Europe, and there was supposed to be a Sega 32X version of Pinocchio but that did not end up happening. I would imagine the Sega 32X version matching up with this Super Famicom version had it been finished and seen a release.

Pinocchio was originally based on a book before it was a movie. The book was good too, drawing inspiration from such classics as Jonah and The Whale and Pygmalion. I could gush on and on about how Pinocchio’s story really resonates with me, but the story only plays a limited role in this game. Presentation-wise, Pinocchio recycles a lot of content from Mickey Mania and The Lion King. You can find sprites, pieces of levels, and even a few sound effects. Pinocchio even sounds just like young Simba! If you can get past the recycled content, Pinocchio is a very beautiful game, featuring plenty of colors, sprites with some very high animation counts for their time, and some detailed backgrounds. Pinocchio’s music has an almost MIDI-like quality to it. It’s very basic while also sounding good. The music takes a lot of inspiration from the music in the actual movie, which is a very good thing. There are voice clips and sound effects too, but they are mostly recycled.

Gameplay-wise, it's bog standard. Run, jump, and occasionally attack enemies. The game doesn’t actually tell you this, but to progress in a few levels, you need to press “up” to through an arch door in the background. Most of the time though, you’re just jumping through levels trying to reach the goal. There are a few mini games to go through too. You have a dancing game where you copy what the computer does, fight off moths as Jiminy Cricket, and do a ducking/jumping segment on a roller coaster and a raft. You also have a segment near the end where you have to collect planks before going to the goal. Level design is okay for the most part, except for a few times that give you blind jumps.

If I can get my hands on one without spending too much money or making too big a mess, the inside piece from a magic 8 ball in there too. Just. So many weird dice. The color and shape of the dice drawn have divinatory meaning as well as the numbers or symbols that appear in the throw.

this is by a band called Fucking Werewolf Asso. they are a band from Sweden. this record is putrid and absolutely amazing at the same time and i honestly don't even know what genre to define it as. punk rock is probably the closest match. at only 31 minutes in length, this release flies by in what feels like seconds. but man, those are some memorable seconds.

Cri Du Chat is a (mostly) instrumental introduction, allowing you to get a good feel for how the rest of this album is gonna sound. pretty standard stuff. My New Sneakers Could Never Replace My Multi-Colored Bangalores then continues with a massive breakdown beat and some of the most in-your-face, abhorrent screaming and singing i have ever heard. but there's a level of cohesion and understanding to the madness. this band really knows what they're doing and have already shown that with just the second track. The Tito Beltrán Massacre has a much more punk-friendly sound with some 8-bit-inspired synths added into the mix, reminiscent of some sorta old Nintendo game (hence why this band is usually referred to as "Nintendocore," but i hate that phrase). Alphonse Laurencic starts out with the now typical whiny scream-singing until exploding into a massive wall of sound. if the band hadn't shown you that they're worth your ears just yet, they have now.

the biggest highlight to me, though, is the 5-minute Your Ex Doesn't Mark Treasures. it's the longest piece on this record by far, with every other song having an average runtime of around 2 to 3 minutes. it closes out everything perfectly, feeling like the band's true magnum opus. if nothing connected beforehand, this one will. it's probably the easiest song to listen to by them and it really shows. it also features a different vocalist sometimes, which can help keep it grounded for the more serious tone it sets.

as mentioned before, the main vocalist sounds like shit. it may be on purpose, but i can definitely understand why that would turn some people off. having an open mind is a pretty necessary part to enjoying this album because it sounds like this band wants to rip your face off as soon as possible and then eat it. but hey, that's the main appeal in my opinion so there's a really good chance this one's not for everybody and that's alright too.

i hope you liked my little show and tell. this album has become a favorite of mine, reminding me a lot of MCR's debut if it was more unhinged with the vocals and tighter with the instrumental. there's a clear influence of all things punk and old VGM on this record, which is a hard combination to nail as well as it does here.

TL;DR designing an ACNH island is suffering and I took that personally

So my island has been in a WIP state since its creation. Got fairly far with implementing my plans, and I've worked on pieces of it here and there, but recently, I was inspired to redesign the whole thing (again). No longer liked all the ideas I had liked before, and overall felt it was lacking. With some struggle, I started coming up with new ideas that I felt good about.

But the thing that has slowed me down the most? That has me already doubting or even hating my brand new ideas?

Paths. It always comes down to the paths.

Custom paths? Default paths? Both have pros and cons to consider. Fellow ACNH players are likely familiar with these issues: loss of footstep sounds, limited design slots to work with (is it worth using 12+ slots for a single path border?), having to make every design from scratch (no Online for me), lines of grass left between paths/inclines/buildings...

And I can't decide. I can't find an answer. Whatever I try, whatever I imagine, I don't like the result. I've hit a wall, and that wall is my own perfectionism. Clearly there is no perfect solution, and I have to compromise to progress—"finished, not perfect" and all that—but I don't want to compromise the vision I have for my island, even though I know that vision is unattainable.

I just want to have an island I'm happy with. And it feels like no matter what I do with it, I'll never be satisfied. I've seen such beautiful pictures and videos of other people's islands, and while they inspire me and fuel my creativity, they also raise my standards for my own island because I know it could be so much better.

I want to be able to settle for "good enough." But it feels like trying to paint a rainbow with one or two colors missing or not quite the right shade. Maybe I can make something pretty, but it's not what I envisioned or want.

So I think, let's just come up with something different. There are plenty of designs I would like just as much or more, right? I'm already struggling because I like multiple exclusive aesthetics/layouts/etc. and I can't fit them all on one island. But...paths are kinda omnipresent, and that means I have to accept them being substandard. Unless? I've considered using minimal to no paths, but I can't imagine that working for me. I'm not going for full-on natural forestcore or whatever (and even that wouldn't look its best without dirt paths, right?).

I guess I might've made this into a bigger deal than it needs to be. At this point, I feel tired and stuck and hopeless, and part of me wants to let it go. It's just a game. But I don't want to give up and leave my island a mess again. For a short while, I was excited to create, thinking I could shape my little land into something great, something I could walk through with a smile and maybe feel proud of. And now I wonder if that's really possible. There must be something I can do, something I'd like, but I don't know how to find it. I'm honestly having trouble focusing on it right now.

Seeking inspiration is a double-edged sword. As nice as other people's islands look, I know a lot of pictures are shared with filters, and even those that aren't...well, seeing images and videos is different than walking through your own island day after day.

I could go into the game's flaws and limitations, but this is what we've got. And it's not all bad. There's potential. The problem is my own inner critic, and I don't know how to get past it.

The best part is that I've been trying to fight this perfectionism with the game from the beginning, when I last restarted my island and named it Wabisabia after the term wabi-sabi, the Japanese ideal/aesthetic centered on transience and imperfection. You can see how well that's going for me ha ha ha! Even if I want to embrace it in theory, it's not so easy to break through the perfectionism cemented inside me.
