Inspiration doesn't mean direct implementation.
YES!!
Inspiration doesn't mean direct implementation
Also regardless of Kishimoto's rendition of characters that he took inspiration from, why should he only write particular pre-existing shounen tropes?
Naruto's rivalry with Sasuke doesn't add anything to the plot because it wasn't a major plot point starting Shippuden, it is something that mostly exists in Part 1. In Part 2, although the audience is foretold that Naruto and Sasuke are going to have a fight , the tension between them stems from their opposing viewpoints, not rivalry or competitiveness.
There are many things to pick on Kishimoto's writing but criticising him for his subversions of archetypes isn't one of them.
Coming to Slam Dunk, I briefly touched on how Kishimoto took inspiration from it in this post and how much of a deviation it is.
"Kishimoto fucked up the perfectly well written archetypes he borrowed from"
Or maybe he just had a different take on it?
Naruto/Hanamichi and Sasuke/Rukawa have superficial similarities, their appearance and outward personalities/behaviour, the former getting jealous that the latter is more popular+skilled than him and forming a rivalry, the former having a crush on a girl who is into the latter. But that's about it.
Rukawa and Hanamichi's relationship is limited to the basketball court, it's just 2 players who don't get along normally coming together for their team. Rukawa and Hanamichi don't care much about each other outside of that.
Rukawa is aloof in every sense of the word meanwhile Sasuke couldn't stop actively caring about Naruto. Rukawa-Hanamichi didn't even remotely have a personal and emotional relationship like Sasuke-Naruto.
I said it before and I will say it again but everyone should read Slam Dunk because not only is it a classic and one of Japan's favourite manga ever but also it's a progenitor of many tropes in Shonen Jump.
And also see that despite being inspired by classic archetypes, Naruto-Sasuke relationship doesn't fit into the typical frenemies mould.

You've stated repeatedly that D&D 5e doesn't possess the mechanics to enable the heroic-fantasy adventure that a lot of DMs/Players seem to think it's meant for. What mechanics would a game designed to cater to that manner of play and storytelling have? Care to offer any recommendations?
In my opinion for a game to really support the genre of heroic fantasy it should have at least some of the following:
Some way of character motivations affecting gameplay in a robust manner. D&D 5e has inspiration which can be rewarded for acting according to a character's bonds, ideals, or flaws, but it is so poorly integrated into the system it might as well be "your DM grants inspiration when they feel like it."
Meaningful nonlethal consequences. D&D 5e gives characters limited means of handling situations nonlethally, including combat, but for the most part combat defaults to lethal and the game provides very little actual concrete guidance as to how characters losing an encounter should be handled. Death remains the most meaningful, clear consequence in D&D, which means there's a risk of losing narrative continuity in pretty much every encounter.
Doing heroics should be tied into the game's incentive structures and in-game reward mechanics. D&D 5e by the book mostly rewards overcoming obstacles (with defeating monsters as the most clearly mechanically defined example!) and before anyone says "milestones" shut up, that's just putting more work on the DM instead of the game defining its own reward mechanics.
There should, in general, be a framework for handling more types of activity than just combat, and combat shouldn't necessarily need to be handled as a blow-by-blow affair, but this is something I think there can be a lot of variation on.
Games that I think fit the bill to varying degrees:
RuneQuest/Mythras: Character ideals like Passions are very well integrated into gameplay. While combat is lethal the game does a lot of the work of telegraphing that to players and GMs and since the game assumes that most opponents will be intelligent creatures with thoughts and feelings there's no expectation of "the orcs will fight to the death" which is a sentence I hate in modern D&D adventure design. While I personally think Passions could be better integrated into the game's advancement system, the way the game handles advancement through actually doing things and membership in organizations (integrating characters into the setting) works very well!
Against the Darkmaster (VsD for short): While mostly a very trad game in the same general wheelhouse as D&D mechanically, its lethal combat system can actually disincentivize engaging in combat for fun (not exactly heroic imo) and it actually provides lots of mechanics for integrating character motivations and doing heroics into the system, including its advancement structures! Hell, it even provides methods for corrupting character ideals and it has a clear campaign structure of fighting against a BBEG!
Fellowship: A game that very much approaches the same genre of fighting against a BBEG as VsD but from an indie direction, once again rewards actual heroics and building connections with the world over just killing monsters, and I mean that this stuff is already implemented into the rules. Also provides a framework for handling social situations, including making friends!
QuestWorlds (formerly HeroQuest): Probably one of the first "narrativist" RPGs (I'm only using that as a shorthand: GNS sucks), QuestWorlds is a very much a trad type of RPG but that approaches the act of gameplay from a very different perspective. Basically, the game has narrative convention built right into its mechanics. It is a very neat game and I heartily recommend checking it out!
Fate: I don't particularly like Fate but even I must admit that it fits almost all of my criteria there! It is more of a toolkit game system so some assembly is required, but I do believe one could easily run a heroic fantasy game using it!
The Shadows of Yesterday: Is a good game. I'm losing steam right now but like TSoY is a pretty good game and I like it. I think y'all should Google it, it's out there on the internet and you can just. Read it.

I've been poking around your website, I really like it.
I'm inspired to put together my own silly site, you've made a lot of posts about that. I know how to get started with a website builder or whatever, but that's kind of boring.
I'd like to imitate the look of Ao3's log in page.
I have several specific Ao3 searches that the 'favorite tag' section just can't manage. I have all of those links in a google docs but it's boring and clumsy. I want buttons to press.
Your website mimics wiki, so... can you point me in the direction to get started mimicing Ao3?
My website doesn't just mimic wikipedia, it is a MediaWiki site, which means that from the ground up the software it's running on is the same software as Wikipedia. When I write pages, I'm using wiki markdown ==Like This== for section subheads and [[like this]] to direct to other pages on the site, etc.
The reason that I chose to do this is because it's relatively easy to set up a site this way; I don't know enough about CSS to get a site to look like Wikipedia without running it on mediawiki software, and I don't know enough about CSS to get something to look like Ao3 without running it on OTW software.
Like MediaWiki, the OTW archive software is also open source, so you theoretically could set up a literal archive of your own, but it is not *easy.*
Walter from Squidge.org has created documentation for implementing OTW's software and has talked about helping others to set it up as well, so that is one option.
If that's not the kind of labor you're looking for (and it won't be for a lot of people! it certainly wasn't for me!) you could try something like using a site like wordpress and building a custom template. That would *also* be a lot of work (in terms of learning CSS) but might be easier than figuring out the whole backend as well as getting the visuals you want.

{𖥔} What in your life needs your attention?
ʚ ═══・୨ꕤ୧・═══ ɞ Pick a Pile ʚ ═══・୨ꕤ୧・═══ ɞ
. ༄. paid readings . ༄
。°⚠︎°。follow your intuition when choosing a pile. if you're drawn to more than one pile, that's okay! you may have messages in more than one.
。°⚠︎°。tarot readings are not 100% accurate, and do not dictate your future. please keep in mind that you have free will. these readings are also general and aren't specific to one person, so please take what resonates and leave what doesn't!
Pile 1
Pile 1, it seems that there's a crucial aspect of your life that needs attention—how past family treatment affects your present. Hurtful family beliefs or traditions may have shaped you into someone who lacks joy, hesitates to explore the world, and tries new things. There's a sense that you may have become cynical, losing belief in yourself and the possibility of miracles. Short bursts of inspiration often don't stick, and family might have led you to believe that your true dreams are unattainable, pushing you towards what's considered traditional and normal. However, these beliefs aren't serving you well, Pile 1. They've turned your perspective on life negative, making it challenging to find meaning in even the small things. You may be accustomed to doing what's perceived as normal and easy, but for growth and progress, stepping out of your comfort zone is necessary. There's a message, perhaps for some of you about moving out of a family home, but the fear of the unknown and the comfort of the familiar holds you back. It's essential to recognize that you might not be taking the right steps to get what you truly desire. You may have grand ideas for yourself but believe you can't implement them, thinking they're impossible or that you don't deserve them. It's crucial to understand that you, more than external factors, are the one holding yourself back. Bringing happiness and peace into your life will provide clarity and help you move forward. What brings you joy? What inspires you?Pay attention to your mindset and surroundings that might be hindering progress. Don't let internal doubts rob you of the opportunity to be truly happy in this lifetime. Spirit advises you to prepare for what comes when tackling these issues—it won't be easy, but it's a necessary transformation for your growth, much like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Trust that the universe will be with you every step of the way, guiding you through the darkness of uncertainty. Remember, everything happens for a reason.
Pile 2
It seems that there's someone in your life, Pile 3, who demands your attention, possibly a family member or someone you share a lot of happiness with. This person may exhibit characteristics of laziness, depression, reckless spending habits leading to financial burdens, or an excessive obsession with money. Whether describing someone else or reflecting aspects of yourself, take what resonates. This person appears to be ungrounded, potentially battling mental or physical illnesses, and displaying reckless tendencies. If this doesn't directly apply to you, it seems you feel caught in a dilemma about deciding whether to keep this person in your life. While you share many happy memories, you could be weary of their actions and arrogant behavior. There may not be direct rudeness or abuse, but a sense of unhealthy coping mechanisms. You might be contemplating whether to cut ties with them, desiring peace, calmness, and a journey towards happiness and healing. The universe advises you to listen to your intuition and heart, assuring you that you're supported in your decision. It's undoubtedly a tough choice, but prioritize your own well-being and happiness. You don't necessarily have to completely cut this person out, but creating some distance might be beneficial. If you resonate with the described person, it's crucial to focus on gaining control over impulsive actions, understanding that your current behavior is throwing you out of alignment. Strive for balance in various aspects of your life and tap into your intuition for true happiness. Check your level of confidence and assertiveness, ensuring it doesn't come off as overly pushy or arrogant. Reflect on how you present yourself to others, how you treat them and yourself, and where insecurities might be affecting your life. This can guide you towards a healthier and more balanced existence.
Pile 3
It appears that there's a childhood dream or a creative aspiration that once brought joy to your inner child. However, over time, it seems you've given up on this dream, possibly due to the challenges you faced when you attempted to pursue it. Fear of others' opinions, especially the potential for competition or tension, might be holding you back. If not competitiveness, it could be concerns about how others perceive your dream. The message emphasizes the importance of standing up for yourself and not letting others' opinions hinder your pursuit of happiness. Pay attention to your soul's calling and drown out the external noise. Embarking on this dream might induce stress, especially as it involves taking on significant responsibilities. However, you're not obligated to carry the burden alone. There's a suggestion to examine how you might be overwhelming yourself with unnecessary stress on this journey. Consider taking on responsibilities gradually rather than piling them all at once. Be mindful of your pacing and avoid rushing into things. It's essential to find a balance that allows you to move forward without burning yourself out, regaining motivation, and instilling discipline in pursuing this dream of yours.

What can we expect from the upcoming apes movies??
The success of the new Planet of the Apes movie is obvious, it far exceeds what was expected at the box office and the critics are very positive. The only thing missing is the official confirmation of the fifth installment of the saga but seeing the numbers it has done, we should trust that we are going to have apes for a while.
So we can create our own ideas of what we think will come in the future of the saga.
Noa's first film in the saga opens up endless possibilities, we can also follow the clues given during the Caesar triology. And it is obvious that the new saga is not only inspired by the original saga from the 70s but also presents stories and ideas that were made known to us in those films. It was Cornelius himself who told us the story about Caesar who at that time called Aldo. So it is unreasonable for us to expect that, as happened in the Caesar films, the main ideas that were implemented in the films of the 70s will continue.
In the films of the 2010s we were already introduced to the idea of astronauts and although I think that the second film would be too hasty to present them, I do think that they could appear at the end of this film or in a kind of post-credits for the third film of Noah. Travels in the time? World's End? Humans destroying the planet? These are arguments that I still see as feasible in the movies. If the casting team is looking for an actor to be human in the next film, it gives me to understand that he could be the villain of the second film. And not Mae as many theorize.
It is true that she was the first human that is introduced to us in the new story and that her ideals direct her to be an antagonist. I don't doubt that that could be the case, but that Mae is a gray character is clear from the final scene of the movie. At one point Mae is going to lose her way and will surely find herself against Noa, but she is a character who screams to redeem herself. Noa and Mae are going to work together in the future, as an ape and a human.
Noa and Mae are clearly the same. They follow the same path: Noa does not know what the Echos are until Raka tells him about them. And Mae? She probably hasn't met an ape before either. Ignorance is mostly what separates us from ideals. And they both take the same path of getting to know each other. But just because they understood that, doesn't mean that everyone does. We already saw Proximus Caesar in the first film, who represents an ideal contrary to what Caesar represented. And very likely in the next movie we will see the humans in the bunkers who can take two arguments. The war against the apes or the search for a cure or becoming immune to the ape virus.
That's why we can theorize about the second movie. It has already been made clear to us that Noa and Mae are the protagonists of this story, and so far we have seen a lot of Noa and very little of Mae. If we come to any conclusion with the end of the movie, it is that Noa wants to follow Caesar's ideal and the one that Raka taught him when he hands the necklace to Mae. Because Raka gives him the necklace so that Noa remembers in the worst moments what was important. And now it's time for Mae to understand it too. I know that the next movie will be difficult for her and that she will also have to make difficult decisions, and that is the reason why Noa gives her the necklace.
I would especially like to mention Tim Burton's film from the 2000s. It is the film with the worst reviews in the saga and yet I see a lot of similarity between that film and the new one from 2024. I don't think they dare as much as in that film or that have some creative freedom to do some of the things they did in that one. And I'm talking about the romance within the movie. In the 2024 movie it is not very important and presents us with relationships that go beyond that interest but the relationship between Ari and Leo in that movie has been highly criticized by the general public and that could affect any attempt at a human/ape relationship that they would like to experience. So I don't see intermediate points, either they give us a story of enemies to lovers between Noa and Mae or I don't think it is very important for the story, because if they end up putting Noa and Soona together (which I doubt) it will not be important in the plot.
I don't want to make it longer so at another time I will develop it because I think they have thrown the stone into the river of a possible relationship between Noa and Mae hoping to see the public's reaction and because I think it would be a good idea to continue developing it.
To summarize, I think that the next movie will introduce us to a human villain and it will be the first time that Noa has to face one.
Human culture and how they have been living until now is also important and the reason why Mae lives isolated and away from humans. If she is immune but can still infect humans, no one will want to get close to her unless she is immune too. How does Noa and Mae's story continue to develop? Noa's clan taking a more leading role and getting to know Anaya and Soona more deeply. etc
I'm excited to see how it continues.

This project is unfinished and will remain that way. There are bugs. Not all endings are implemented. The ending tracker doesn't work. Images are broken. Nothing will be fixed. There's still quite a bit of content, though, so I am releasing what's here as is.
Tilted Sands is a project I started back when AI Dungeon first came out--the very early version you had to run in a Google colabs notebook. Sometime in late 2018, I think? I was a contributor at Botnik Studios at the time and I was delighted by AI Dungeon, but I knew it would never be a truly satisfying choose your own adventure generator on its own. I would argue that the modern AI Dungeon 2 and NovelAI don't fully function as such even now. That's not how AI works. It has to be guided heavily, the product has to be sculpted by human hands.
Anyway, it inspired me to use Transformer--a GPT2 predictive text writing tool--to craft a more coherent and polished but still silly and definitely AI-flavored CYOA experience. It was an ambitious project, but I was experienced with writing what I like to call "cyborg" pieces--meaning the finished product is, in a way, made by both an AI/algorithm/other bot AND a human writer. Something strange and wonderful that could not have been made by the bot alone, nor by the human writer alone. Algorithms can surprise us and trigger our creative human minds to move in directions we never would've thought to go in otherwise. To me, that's what actual AI art is: a human engaging in a creative activity like writing in a way that also includes utilizing an algorithm of some sort. The results are always fascinating, strangely insightful, and sometimes beautiful.
I worked on Tilted Sands off-and-on for a couple years, and then the entire AI landscape changed practically overnight with DALL-E and ChatGPT. And I soon realized that I cannot continue working on this project. Mainstream, corporate AI is disgustingly unethical and I don't want the predictive text writing I used to enjoy so much to be associated with "AI art". It's not. Before DALL-E and ChatGPT, there were artists and writers who made art by utilizing algorithms, neural networks, etc. Some things were perhaps in an ethical or legal grey area, but people actually did care about that. I remember discussing "would it be ethical to scrape [x]?" with other writers, and sharing databases of things like commercial advertising scripts and public domain content. I liked using mismatched databases to write things, like a corpus of tech product reviews that I used to write a song. The line between transformative art and fair use vs theft was constantly on all of our minds, because we were artists ourselves.
All of the artists and writers I knew in those days who made "cyborg art" have stopped by now. Including me.
But I poured a lot of love and thought and energy into this silly little project, and the thought of leaving it to rot on my hard drive hurt too much. It's not done, but there's a lot there--over 14,000 words, multiple endings and game over scenarios. I had so much fun with it and I wanted to complete it, but I can't. I don't want it to be associated in any way with the current "AI art" scene. It's not.
Please consider this my love letter to what technology-augmented art used to be, and what AI art could have been.
I know I'm not the only one mourning this brief but intense period from about 2014-2019 in which human creativity and developing AI technology combined organically to create an array of beautiful, stupid, silly, terrible, wonderful works of art. If you're also feeling sad and nostalgic about it, I hope you find this silly game enjoyable even in its unfinished state.
In conclusion:
Fuck capitalism, fuck what is currently called AI art, fuck ChatGPT, fuck every company taking advantage of artists and writers and other creative types by using AI.

content: spoilers for JJK0! Satosugu if you squint, but it's left ambiguous enough for it to be either romantic or platonic. This is just me imagining what it'd be like if Suguru got a chance to do-over for his plan on how to save humanity from its bullshit
Reformed!Suguru who, instead of dying in the alley from his fight with Yuta Okkotsu, is saved by Satoru and teleported to Shoko for healing.
Reformed!Suguru who slips away as soon as he can, knowing that Satoru will turn a blind eye, now knowing the truth of his best friend's feelings. Satoru doesn't hate him, never did, and there are mixed emotions when he turns his back on his one and only for the second time.
Reformed!Suguru who returns to his cult, back at square one. He has no curses, so he has to absorb more. His allies have taken a hit, so he needs to find more. His funds are depleted from the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, so he needs to make more. This should have been the plan that would've ended all suffering, eliminated the monkeys and given birth to a chosen people. It did not work.
Reformed!Suguru who spirals, again. He stays up even later at night, finds himself unable to play the kindly priest as convincingly to the monkeys who flock to him. The curses become hard to stomach again, no longer tempered by the ideals he had followed for the last decade. They were ideas that had proven themselves faulty with the last battle, and he has no use for them anymore.
Reformed!Suguru who thinks about Yuta's bond with Rika, and how they'd beaten him so entirely. He thinks about how he was defeated by love, and understanding, and trust. It's a disgustingly saccharine idea—but is there something worth pursuing in that thought?
Reformed!Suguru who begins to form a plan. He looks into his cult followers, finds those with connections to companies and schools and corporations. He does what he does best, plants thoughts into their heads, inspires undying loyalty to his cause, a new cause. They parrot his message back to their bosses and employees, none the wiser.
Reformed!Suguru who knows how to play the long game, and so he waits. He pulls strings now and then, as he watches the foundations of his idea start to take shape. There is an increase of counselors in schools, with mental health being taught as part of mandatory health education. Companies are being sued for unreasonable working hours, giving rise to a new wave of rules and regulations which set more realistic expectations. Corporations are investing heavily in endeavours and projects which contribute to the general public's satisfaction: parks and public spaces, consumption vouchers for elderly and those in need, elaborate festivals for the holidays.
Reformed!Suguru who starts to receive less and less requests for his help. The curses that he does swallow from the people (he doesn't know when he stopped calling them monkeys) who come to him are minor at best. It gets more difficult to find strong curses to add to his repertoire. The curse users who would've balked at this development have been dismissed long ago; those who have stayed know that all this means that everything is heading in the right direction.
Reformed!Suguru who sees a 5% drop in Japan's overall cursed energy. This comes from a 15% drop of cursed energy in Tokyo, the place he'd chosen as the guinea pig for his plan.
Reformed!Suguru who decides it's time to find his best friend and ask for help. He shows up at Satoru's apartment, not wearing monk robes but casual clothing, a loose sweater and jeans. He's tied his hair back into a bun for old time's sake, hoping it'll score him some brownie points, make Satoru more amicable to the data in the stack of paperwork he's holding.
Reformed!Suguru who stands behind Satoru as the man fights for Suguru's death penalty to be taken off him. Suguru is afraid that he's just walked himself into his own death. But miraculously, the higher ups deem the results of Suguru's implementations to be valuable, letting him live in exchange for his services. Satoru still pushes for Suguru's absolute freedom, threatens to Hollow Purple them and spark a mutiny. No one can defend themselves against Gojo Satoru, not really, and Suguru is a free man.
Reformed!Suguru who hears Satoru say to him, "we're the strongest," for the first time in a decade, and believes it.
Reformed!Suguru who takes up the position of counselor at Jujutsu High. The students are slow to warm up to him, both because he'd been a former enemy, and the thought of talking about their feelings makes them squirm. But Suguru is a patient man, and nothing if not persistent. He knows how isolating being a jujutsu sorcerer can be, went through it firsthand. He's determined to change the rhetoric around emotions within their line of work; he doesn't want this future generation to lose themselves or anyone else.
Reformed!Suguru who is the first person that Itadori Yuji meets after Satoru recruits him. It's him who asks Yuji why he fights, picks apart the boy's mind with thoughtfulness and compassion. When Yuji tells Masamichi Yaga his reasons for being a sorcerer, the principal deems it as satisfactory.
Reformed!Suguru who is convinced—yes, he thinks to himself, this is how we'll make things right.

Hi, I know I've said it a lot of times, but I really love your writing. It seems like watching a movie because while reading I can actually picture it in my head.
I wanted to ask you how you plan your characters or stories. I mean, do you immediately get an idea and start working on it or you have to think and rethink about it until you find the right inspiration?
like you mentioned in a previous ask about how you created Vic, and you said you were flexible because he wasn't really described in the novel, but still he had to fit in some image. But what about implementing new characters to an existing universe? I'm thinking about dwm reader, Scottie, Evelyn, Hannah-Beth etc, they all feel like they belong there and I'm wondering how you decided to create them the way they are.
Also, if I think about DWM everything is falling into the right place and when I read a knew part of the story I'm like "oh this was hinted chapters ago" and I think it really is amazing or also the little references here and there, I think it shows how much effort you put in that story. And..I'm curious to know...are the reader and Jason actually friends? He had some kind gestures towards her, but were they out of kindness or because she is his girlfriend's bff?
Regarding the future fics... I'm kinda loving all of your ideas, I'm looking forward to read the one where he gets jealous, or when she gets high because I strongly believe it's going to be hilarious and super cute, and you know everything involving Scottie or Gareth and the other guys.
I always write too much, so I get it if you want to skip this one 😂
Hi! First of all, I would never skip one of your asks (or anyone else's for that matter). If someone takes the time to write me a question, they deserve a well-thought-out response. Always.
Anyway, regarding how I approach my stories, I usually get an idea (or a random scene pops into my head) and I build off that one idea. With DWM, for instance, it was the image of Eddie hanging out in the bathroom with a girl at prom, and I just built the rest of the story around that. "Who is this girl?" "Why is she here?" "Why is Eddie here?" etc. I always have a general outline before I start writing, but it's not rigid because I always come up with new ideas and directions for the story as I write. For example, I was always planning on having the reader have a little crush on Eddie, but it wasn't supposed to be as deep as it ended up being (certainly not one she was harboring for 6 years 😂). That changed while I was writing Pt. 3 and then by Pt. 4, I had their relationship and history completely figured out, and that ultimately changed the entire direction of the story.
I have a similar approach to characters. With DWM, I knew instantly that I wanted the reader to be Chrissy's best friend who's kinda stuck living in her shadow. I think she plays up her sarcastic, snarky persona in an attempt to stand out from Chrissy. She wants to be the sour to Chrissy's sweet; otherwise, she would be even more invisible than she already is. I also gave her a lot of my own qualities and flaws, and most of her personal anecdotes are taken directly from my life. Yeah, DWM is completely self-indulgent. I basically created a fictionalized version of myself and had her date Eddie, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
With Paper Men, most of those characters were born out of necessity. I needed a main character to guide us through the story, and Richie already had a sister (who doesn't appear) in the movie, so that was an easy starting point. I just created my vision of his sister, taking a lot of his qualities and twisting them around to suit her. Since I decided to make Evelyn a very friendly and outgoing person, I needed to give her friends, so I made Hannah, the shy Christian girl who's obsessed with trashy romance novels and lives vicariously through Evelyn (I love her so much), and Paul, the professional slacker who's always sabotaging her grand plans with his laziness. Because most of the story takes place at school and Evelyn is so involved in school, I needed the school to feel real, so I created a bunch of students to populate it. Gradually, a lot of them developed their own unique identities, and I let them go crazy.
Another thing I like to do is create a lot of shared history between the characters. I think that's an easy way to make all the characters feel like they exist in the same world. That's why both DWM and Paper Men make so many references to the past.
Speaking of references, I'm glad you appreciate all my foreshadowing and callbacks to earlier stories/scenes in DWM because that's one of my favorite things to do when I write. Whenever I'm working on a new story, I always try to think about how it relates to what's already happened and how it will affect future works. For instance, the most recent fic "Out of the Loop" has set the foundation for a lot of future fics. The reader is definitely going to find out about Claire Dunnock, the girl who Eddie absolutely slept with 😬. Claire said she had a class with Eddie last year, well... guess who else was in that class? The reader and she saw them flirting. I don't have it on the list, but it'll be a story. The reader has already expressed discomfort about Eddie's previous sexual experiences, and this will only make that worse.
Finally moving on!
To speak about Jason and the reader's relationship. They are truly friends and not just because of Chrissy (although that is a huge factor). They've known each other since elementary school. They weren't "hang out outside of school" friends, but they were friends. I've mentioned this before, but the reader used to have a crush on Jason back in elementary school, but once she found out he liked Chrissy, she had to let that crush go. She can't compete with Chrissy. Nobody would ever choose her over Chrissy. So she had no choice but to step back and surrender. She doesn't have romantic feelings for him anymore, but she still admires his good qualities (and Jason does have really great qualities). That being said, Jason does truly care about her as a person, which is why he bought her a corsage and danced with her at prom. It wasn't just because he felt sorry for her or because he felt obligated to do it. He genuinely cares about her, and he thinks she can do a lot better than Eddie.
Lastly, regarding future fics, the one where the reader finally gets to high school is going to be funny (because Scottie's in it and he knows that Eddie has been pining for the reader for the last two years) but it's also going to be really sad. They're both so excited to see each other and are secretly hoping to jump back into their friendship again, but as we know from the main story, that doesn't happen. They don't talk to each other. Nobody apologizes. They just fall into their expected roles and go back to being strangers. It's almost as if that summer never even happened. It's really sad and Eddie takes it very hard.
Holy crap, I wrote too much. Gold star to anyone who finished this! ⭐️

so what's happening here?
okay. so first off - i changed the main's url a while back and then realised 'wait if that's not using this one then i can put it back here' i intend to dedicate most of my spoons today to fixing links - if it's been more than 8 hours since this post was made and you find a broken link, please tell me
but anyway. we are reincarnating (i still got the long covid but trying to make it easier on me this go around)
what's changing? well, i intend to have two different types of builds here: - adaptations - direct adaptations of a character, presented without description as the original character's should suffice. for example, gym leaders and danganronpa characters would likely fall here. instead of characterisation notes, i'll just have ideas of how to integrate them. (this doesn't necessarily mean all the human characters will be human though. that's boring) - inspirations - the majority of existing builds fall under this. examples being basically any mon that isn't a specific one like guildmaster wigglytuff. these will have characterisation notes though perhaps not as in-depth as they used to - long covid messed that one up a bit.
and what's new?
i'll be making example sheets, probably using MPMB's pdfs. i say probably because they need adobe acrobat, so don't run natively on linux and i can't get them to run through wine - but they look so good i've set up a win10 virtual machine just to use them - why this over beyond? beyond still hasn't implemented some stuff properly, and the exported pdfs require scrolling in some fields in my experience which means no printing - why this over dicecloud? again, pdf export reasons - you can't export it in any easily readable way - why this over insert any other pdf here? this one does the maths for me :v
if these sheets don't work out for me i'll be using dicecloud for the maths and just copying stuff into another pdf. if they do work out i'll put a proper payment in for them; i appreciate PWYW for letting you try them out first too
generally these will be level 5 or 6 to play around with how i see them.
i have no schedule for this currently. i'm mostly posting this to try and force brain into it - the adhd stuff is. Going - but hopefully i'll get /somewhere/ next month.
i also intend to update all the existing builds. mostly just making sheets for them, but some of them there's cool new stuff they can use on heroforge. as such, i'll be preparing them, and once i have enough i'll start queueing them and updating their links once i do
regarding homebrew - my friend's homebrew i've used for a couple isn't available currently, so i'll adapt them to new roles. scrafty's going to be the hardest, but i can deal i do intend to look and see what homebrew is set up for whichever sheets i end up going with - it won't be the main focus but it will give some inspiration...
but yeah. tl;dr long covid + adhd are kicking my heck but we stay silly :3

RWRB Essay Part Eleven: Texts VS Emails
Word Count: 476
I saw some complaints that they didn't continue the way they did the text messages with the way they did the emails, and I have to say, I disagree that they should've.
The texts are conversational and work really well to have pop up graphics and edits, but those emails are letters. They are a lot more serious, and using purely voiceover is far less distracting. You can focus purely on what they're saying and the inflection of their voices. It also gave them a chance to show the progress of time through Alex's campaign work.
Most of their emails are exchanged over a period of time where nothing particularly interesting is happening. They are the interesting thing. Alex is busy with college and Henry's just doing his royal duties. That doesn't make for the most entertaining action on screen.
Alex's devotion to Texas in the book is his binder. It works really well in the book because we can hear Alex's thoughts, considering there's not much actually said about the binder. He has that confrontation with that guy in the White House, but the binder is his private, secret project. Hearing his thoughts and feelings directly works better than how it would've played out if they did the same thing in the movie. It would've been some shots of him with it, foreshadowing and hinting at it, but its true importance would've been lost on those who haven't read the book.
Instead, they were direct about it. He tries to get his strategy implemented from the beginning, while in the book, it's a secret plan that he doesn't intend to share yet. Instead of the argument with that coworker, he has the argument with his mother, which hits the beats of his desires for Texas. He wants to go out there and make them feel heard and reach out to the younger population, and that's exactly what he tells his mother in that argument.
Having him working on the campaign during that stretch of time between Paris and the lake house accomplished what all those thoughts and emails and Luna's role did in establishing what politics means to Alex, what Texas means to Alex.
Being able to watch him working while hearing him and Henry write to each other through the emails was a perfect blending of two parts of the book.
And again, their phrasing in the emails is very different from the texts. The pop-ups would've felt a bit odd. In the texts where they do that, they're bantering back and forth, sending the articles, and sharing interests, but in those emails, Alex is talking about the pressure he's under to succeed and Henry is talking about how inspiring he is. It's better to keep the audience focused in on them rather than the fun graphics and whatnot.

The future of architecture isn't straight; it's circular. The green wave that's been steadily building over the past couple of decades is now showing its true colours, and those are shades of circular economy blues and greens. Revolutionizing Architectural Design: The Circular Economy Perspective for Future Sustainability is more than a topic; it's our manifesto for the New Age Architect. Sustainable architecture, green buildings, circular economy - these aren't mere buzzwords. They are the essence constituting the future of architectural design. But what exactly makes a design circular? And why is it the key to future sustainability? 1. Synergizing Waste and Design Think of a world where waste doesn't equal litter, but raw material. A world where discarded plastics rise, Phoenix-like, as trendy furniture. Where industry tailings turn into building blocks for the environment. This is the catchy core of a circular economy. It's about reshaping our linear "take-make-dispose" model and bending it into an infinite loop of "recycle-repurpose-reuse". It's about embedding waste management directly into architectural design. 2. Optimizing Resource Efficiency In a circular economy paradigm, architects strive to reduce material use and prioritize renewable resources. Materials and designs are chosen for their potential to be repurposed, thus ensuring that buildings remain assets instead of becoming liabilities. The result? A drastic reduction in both costs and environmental footprint. 3. Emphasizing Lifespan Thinking In a circular design, the idea is to extend the useful lifespan of the built environment. This means designing for flexibility, adaptability, and deconstruction instead of final demolition. Buildings are considered as 'material banks' with valuable resources that can be harvested when a building reaches the end of its life. 4. Incorporating Biophilic Design Biophilia, love for nature, is at the heart of circular architecture. It reconnects people with the natural environment through direct and indirect nature contact in architectural design. It's about leveraging nature's wisdom in our buildings – a concept known as biomimicry. From butterfly-wing-inspired solar panels to shark-skin-like surface design for energy efficiency, nature provides endless inspiration for sustainable and circular architectural design. 5. Driving Technological Adoption From digital twin technology to AI-driven simulations, industry 4.0 plays a central role in streamlining the implementation of circular design strategies. With the advent of Building Information Modelling (BIM), architects can efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure and, more importantly, predict their impact on the environment. Circular architecture isn't just an option anymore; it's the only way forward, adding aesthetic appeal to environmental consciousness. The call for a paradigm shift — from linear to loop, from conventional to circular — echoes louder today than ever before. It's time to join hands and transform this buzzword into a practical blueprint. With this article, let's not just design and build for the upcoming years, but for centuries to come. Let's write the green chapter in the history of architecture together, entwining sustainability with circularity. Join us on this revolutionary journey of circular economy and let's carve a greener, cleaner, and sustainable architectural tomorrow. Title: The Dawn of Circularity: The Future of Sustainable Architectural Design As we forecast the horizon of architectural design, the buoyant beacon of sustainability brightens the possibilities tremendously. Delving deeper into the concept introduced in the article, "Revolutionizing Architectural Design: The Circular Economy Perspective for Future Sustainability," we forecast a future where built environments seamlessly merge with natural ecosystems in a harmonious dance of design and functionality. The circular economy principle
is ready to leap off the pages of thought leadership discussions, and onto the canvases of modern urban planning. The built environment sector is set to evolve, incorporating this sustainable perspective, effectively remolding its face by optimizing resource utilization, minimizing waste, and prioritizing eco-efficiency. Resilient, Future-Ready Cities Imagine living in resilient cities where buildings 'live and breathe' like true biological systems. Future urban landscapes will feature buildings designed to regenerate, adapt, and self-repair. Architectural design won't just focus on aesthetic appeal but will wonderfully integrate energy efficiency, water recycling, and waste management schemes. As more architects engage the principles of circular economy, our cities will transform into self-sufficient ecosystems undergirded by renewable energy sources and smart solutions for resource circulation, effectively replacing the current linear use-and-throw pattern. The Future of Construction Materials In this envisioned future, the ethos of circularity will revolutionize construction materials. We foresee an industry where reclaimed materials become the norm, pushing the boundaries of eco-innovation. Architectural structures of today that mirror a kit of parts will be replaced by buildings designed for disassembly, promoting the re-harvesting of materials for future buildings. Economic and Social Implications Embedding circularity in architectural design will reshape the economic landscape, as well. A circular economy in the built environment can stimulate employment in services such as repair, maintenance, and recycling. This transformative way of building cities will not only foster environmental sustainability but also catalyze economic growth and promote social prosperity. In conclusion, a future where the pillars of architectural design are rooted in circular economy principles is not a mere utopian concept. It's a tangible reality we are moving towards, promising to usher in a new era of sustainable development reverberating far beyond the architectural industry. With this perspective, the future of architectural design shines bright, with vast potential for enhancing life quality, reducing environmental impact, and creating sustainable cities for us to thrive. As we march forward, remember this: circular is the new sustainable. The future isn't just green; it's circular. Search Keywords: circular economy, sustainability, architectural design, future city planning, eco-efficiency, renewable energy, construction materials, social prosperity, sustainable development, built environment, green construction. Prediction: As the world continues to grapple with climate change and finite resources, we predict that the circular economy will become an integral part of architectural projects. Architects, urban planners, and engineers will increasingly implement strategies for reducing waste, optimizing resources, and incorporating renewable materials into their designs. Furthermore, redesigning buildings for adaptivity and flexibility will become a standard practice. These trends will lead to zero-waste urban layouts, energy-positive buildings, and even towns designed for complete circularity. Buildings of the future will not only have the capacity to generate their own energy but also the ability to recycle materials when their lifespan ends. This new era of sustainable architecture will not only revolutionize the industry but will also contribute to the global effort to battle climate change. Quote: "Just as the circle represents completeness, so will our future architectural designs. Perfectly marrying form with function, they will stand as pillars of sustainability,
reflecting the essence of a circular economy where nothing is wasted, and everything is constantly renewed."

i didnt beat Affogato
they keep calling this magenta-haired lady a bleeding heart
so this games premise is that you're a witch that runs a coffee shop. don't worry it's not cozy. instead you go into people's mind palace and play a reverse tower defense game (tower assault?). I think this is done really well, especially considering how novel it is. the difficulty pacing is a bit spotty (more on that later), but I think it provides a decent challenge overall, especially by the halfway point. I am a little complacent with my cards, though. the game encourages you to switch up your loadout by introducing new cards that synergize really well with certain approaches, like the moon-sun-high priestess[!] deck where you shuffle your cards in and out. but once I fully leveled up some bread-and-butter cards like strength and the world there aren't a lot of combos that don't work well. but hey, that's a good thing! level up and approach with your favorite units instead of relying on the predetermined winning combo. I always value build freedom in an RPG, and this does really well. also, the gameplay itself is just so unique and interesting.
the first thing you'll probably notice about this game is the persona inspiration. you spend time progressing visual novel side stories (with an in game calender) with the NPCs to power up your tarot based rpg minions. personally, I'm one of those people that are super invested in the persona series, but I've mostly experienced it through letsplays and longplays and that kinda thing. the furthest I got was in 4, and that was pretty underwhelming, but I digress. I'm not sure how well this was implemented... I didn't finish any of them until the endgame, and this seemed pretty in line with how the difficulty progressed, but that means I didn't really get a chance to play around with the units you get as a reward. that said, the stories are all still really well written! natalie's felt a bit meandering in the beginning, but most of them felt really directed as fun little side stories that fit the theme of a devil mystery. also, the grand plot with Sera's whole demon shards thing is great, love the episodic nature where you meet new characters and it sets up new gimmicks for the rpg gameplay, great stuff. the dialog can be a little... meh at times, but I found it charming a good 70% of the time, which is a passing grade last I checked
the third genre this game employes, beside visual novel and reverse-tower-defense-rpg is... coffee minigame. honestly, it seemed a little half-baked. you have to make coffee for your social links pretty often, but people usually just want an Americano or sometimes a mocha. seeing all the weird drinks on the menu and the dedicate spice submenu made me excited to play around with orders kinda like VA-11 HALL-A, but people are usually just straightforward about wanting simple drinks, with like one or two exceptions in the whole game. I'm glad it's there, because the coffee shop makes for a good way of justifying Affogato (the character) getting dragged into drama so much and it'd feel a little awkward if there was no interactivity, but I feel like it was ultimately underutilized.
also the art style is cute. I love the chibi tarot guys and the talksprites... honestly the best way I can describe it is like, they look like they were designed like they should been tweening after a 4/5 star gacha pull, but that's not a bad thing per se? they're detailed and have a pretty stylistic feel by anime standards (no shade to anime, but you know what I mean), but it's weird to break the association in my brain.
I also wanted to talk about the voice acting! it's available in both Japanese and Chinese (I assume Mandarin). I don't listen to a lot of spoken Chinese, so it was actually pretty neat! I liked picking up on little linguistic idiosyncrasies, like how they have to pronounce it "Affojato" since Mandarin doesn't seem to have a hard g sound. also, the voice acting just did a good job at fitting and emphasizing the characters. mephista totally stole the show for that, but it helped with stuff like recognising that Dave was meant to be suave and handsome in a way that can't really be conveyed with text without going overboard. so, well done chinese voice actors!
okay. last thing i wanna talk about here - i think the game is good, and you should play it, but there is one level i have been stuck on for days. without spoiling too much, its the level you play with eva after you collect all the shards. its bizarrely hard. im playing on normal difficulty and there are so many things that are designed to kill you instead of challenge you. the level is so big and there are so many of those stupid laser enemies that i could not have any units survive long enough to kill all five(!) boss targets. i have been stuck on this level for days after spending no less than like half an hour on the hardest levels before this point. i had to switch to easy mode, and i think it is a failure on the game's part that it couldnt properly balance the default difficulty.
in addition to that, i only managed to complete 3 out of 5 of the games' social links. the only problem with this is, im not sure how youre supposed to do that with everyone? im pretty sure the game literally doesnt give you enough time to fully level everyone. i only opened the store like twice, and those were both in the morning and the only time you can advance the social links is the evening. i extended every chapter as long as i could by avoiding the boss to keep talking to people, and i still didnt have enough time. now ill need to do an entire second playthrough if i want to get the related achievements, including the one for collecting all the witch cards. i am incredibly dissapointed
the plot took such a weird turn at the end there too, so much stuff about sera just came up out of nowhere, and the turn the chapter takes is so sudden and unfitting in my opinion. it felt like when a show is told that this is gonna be their last season but theyre already halfway through writing so they need to cut stuff and write in stuff thats lets them have some finality
all this worked together to really sour this game for me right at the end. also i lost my save file but i dont hold it against this game, that was my fault. if this was any other game id power through from the start and try again, but this just has too many unfun caveats that im just gonna move on
if this game still sounds neat to you, by all means check it out. this is all just my opinion, and you might click with the game a lot better than i did. the core of the game is pretty solid, its just the execution that ruined it for me, but even that was forgivable until the end. im gonna see what befun studios puts together in the future, maybe a sequel where they iron out some of the flaws would work really well?

Recognizing the Impact of Signage Designers
Signage designers: the unsung heroes of the visual landscape. While their work is ubiquitous, their craft often goes unnoticed, overshadowed by the messages they convey. But behind every sign, there's a story—a story of creativity, skill, and meticulous attention to detail. Today, we're pulling back the curtain to shine a spotlight on the artistry of signage designers.
The Art of Signage Design
Signage design is a delicate balance of art and science. It requires not only a keen eye for aesthetics but also a deep understanding of human psychology, spatial dynamics, and communication principles. Signage designers must master the fundamentals of design—composition, typography, color theory—while also considering factors such as visibility, legibility, and branding.
At its core, signage design is about effective communication. Whether it's directing traffic, promoting a product, or conveying information, the goal is always the same: to capture attention and convey a message quickly and clearly. Achieving this requires careful consideration of factors such as audience demographics, viewing distance, and environmental context.
The Process Unveiled
The journey from concept to completion in signage design is a multifaceted one, encompassing several stages:
Research and Discovery: Every project begins with research. Signage designers delve into the client's brand, audience, and objectives, gathering insights that will inform the design process.
Concept Development: Armed with knowledge, designers brainstorm concepts, exploring different approaches and visual styles. Sketches, mood boards, and mockups help bring ideas to life.
Refinement and Iteration: Designs evolve through a process of refinement and iteration. Designers solicit feedback, making revisions based on client input, usability testing, and aesthetic considerations.
Production and Implementation: Once a design is finalized, it's time to bring it to life. This may involve working with fabricators, printers, or digital media specialists to produce and install the signage.
Evaluation and Optimization: The work doesn't end once the signage is in place. Designers monitor its effectiveness, gathering feedback and data to inform future iterations and improvements.
The Significance of Signage Designers
Signage designers play a vital role in shaping our environment and experiences. Their work extends far beyond mere aesthetics; it influences how we navigate physical spaces, perceive brands, and interact with information. Whether it's a sleek corporate logo, a playful wayfinding system, or an eye-catching billboard, signage designers have the power to captivate, inform, and inspire.
Their influence is perhaps most apparent in urban environments, where signs serve as landmarks, guiding us through the maze of streets and storefronts. In retail settings, signage can mean the difference between a customer making a purchase or walking away empty-handed. And in public spaces, signs convey vital information, ensuring safety and accessibility for all.
Conclusion
Next time you find yourself admiring a well-crafted sign, take a moment to appreciate the skill and dedication of the signage designers behind it. Their work may be subtle, but its impact is profound, shaping the way we experience and interact with the world around us. Signage designers are the unsung heroes of the visual landscape, and it's time we gave them the recognition they deserve.

Here's the thing, I don't think of socialism in a "this will definitely work" kind of way. I see it as an IDEAL to thrive toward. There will never be a perfect utopian society because there will always be greedy people out to exploit others and hoard resources, but it's important to have at least an IDEA of what a utopian society could look like to know how to push back against the greedy and the conservatives. You have to know your destination to figure out which direction you should be going. It doesn't matter if you don't get there in one trip, or if you stumble along the way, what matters is that you're closer to that destination than if you had done nothing and let yourself get dragged in the opposite direction. This is the biggest revelation that studying the French Revolution in depth has given me: just because things got wildly fucked up under a new system implemented in the name of progress doesn't mean the system itself is unworthy of effort or is inherently unrealistic.
The revolutionaries didn't know if democracy was going to "work" for France. They went for it anyway, because the alternative was living under the status quo of the ancien regime, and they made the decision to try and break out rather than languish without the rights they wanted. They stumbled in the dark because they had very little idea of what they were doing, and somehow turned into an Empire then a kingdom again then a republic 2.0 then an empire 2.0 then a republic 3.0 then a republic 4.0 and they are now on their 5TH TRY at this republic thing, and it is clearly still riddled with problems for them to have to riot again, but they never would've gotten this far if their ancestors hadn't made that first clumsy attempt in 1792.
Reading all this drama and history made me realize I'd been wrong to give up hope on communism & socialism by association just because it was so disastrous in the 20th century and produced mostly oppressive totalitarian regimes, including my birth country. I'd been led to believe communism itself inevitably spawns hellholes where everyone starves, when there were really so many other factors at play, chiefly America and its militant capitalism doing everything it can to disrupt communist countries, with sanctions, CIA-backed coups, and outright invasions. I saw a parallel in how the rest of Europe went to war against the French First Republic because they were so terrified that the Revolution would spread. The First Republic would not have stumbled nearly so much if it hadn't had to fend off like SIX OTHER INVADING COUNTRIES and could've focused on refining its democratic processes in peace. The pressures of war and the rest of Europe trying to sabotage them was what really led to the Reign of Terror.
After the Coalition defeated Napoleon and restored the French monarchy, I'm sure they thought they proved that democratic republics don't work and inevitably lead to Jacobins chopping everyone's heads off, just like how people nowadays think that communism has been proven to not work. Yet the French people remembered the power of direct action, how they once beheaded a king with it. When they became extraordinarily unhappy under Charles X, they overthrew him in 1830. They replaced him with another king, Louis-Phillip, because they were still wary of trying a republic and Louis-Phillip promised to be more liberal, but turns out living under even a liberal-seeming monarch was insufferable!! And so they overthrew Louis-Phillip in 1848 and went for that 2nd republic.
It should be noted that every time a republic was attempted, it inspired progressives in every country around it. Now, we think monarchies are weird and backwards and democratic republics should be the default, "civilized" mode of government. No one automatically associates democracies with terror & guillotines anymore. It wasn't easy and took a LOT of trial and error, but we got here.
Could we not one day think the same of capitalism vs socialism, or even communism? Right now it seems like capitalism has "won," but...what has it won, exactly? A handful of billionaires control a majority of wealth. The mass productions that allowed capitalist countries to flex on communist countries about how much better they had it, how many more shiny products they had access to, have proved unsustainable and are killing our planet. Is this really the best we can do? Is it not worth taking another stumble toward something different? What do we have to lose at this point?
"We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings."
- Ursula K. Le Guin
Real talk…being born and raised in “communist” China didn’t make me communist in the slightest but getting into the French Revolution has made me a full blown socialist reading actual academic leftist theory
