Anne Boleyn (c. 1501 or 1507 – 19 May 1536), King Henry VIII's second queen, is often portrayed as a seductress and ultimately the woman responsible for changing the face of religion in England.
In reality, she was a fiercely intelligent and pious woman dedicated to education and religious reform.
But after her arrest and execution on false charges of adultery and incest in May 1536, Henry VIII was determined to forget her memory.
Her royal emblems were removed from palace walls, her sparkling jewels tucked away in dark coffers, and her precious books disappeared from the pages of time.
One of Boleyn’s books that has reappeared is the Book of Hours, a stunning prayer book, printed around 1527 with devotional texts designed to be read throughout the day, features hand-painted woodcuts — as well as a rare example of the queen’s own writing.
In the margins of one of the beautifully decorated pages, she penned a rhyming couplet followed by her signature:
“Remember me when you do pray, that hope doth lead from day to day, Anne Boleyn.”
Tumblr media
The book vanished with Boleyn’s execution in 1536, then resurfaced around 1903 when it was acquired by the American millionaire William Waldorf Astor (31 March 1848 – 18 October 1919) after he purchased Hever Castle, Anne Boleyn’s childhood home in the English countryside.
The hiding place of the disgraced queen’s devotional tome had been a mystery for centuries, until recent research by a university student uncovered hidden signatures that helped trace its path through history.
The discovery
The book’s whereabouts in the 367 years between Boleyn’s death and its reemergence remained puzzling until 2020 when Kate McCaffrey, then a graduate student at the University of Kent working on her master’s thesis about Anne Boleyn’s Book of Hours, found something unexpected in the margins of the book.
“I noticed what appeared to be smudges to the naked eye,” recalls McCaffrey, assistant curator at Hever Castle since 2021.
Intrigued, she borrowed an industrial-strength ultraviolet light and set it up in the darkest room of Hever Castle.
Ultraviolet light is often used to examine historical documents because ink absorbs the ultraviolet wavelength, causing it to appear darker against the page when exposed.
“The words just came through. It was incredible to see them underneath the light, they were completely illuminated,” the curator recalls.
McCaffrey’s theory is that the words were erased during the late Victorian era when it was popular to cleanse marginalia from books or manuscripts.
But thanks to her extraordinary detective work, these erased words turned out to be the key that unlocked the tale of the book’s secret journey from certain destruction at the royal court to safety in the hands of a dedicated group of Boleyn’s supporters.
The guardians
Indeed, various pages throughout the text reveal the names and notations of a string of Kentish women — Elizabeth Hill, Elizabeth Shirley, Mary Cheke, Philippa Gage, and Mary West — who banded together to safeguard Anne's precious book and keep her memory alive.
While it’s unclear how the book was initially passed to these women, Anne Boleyn expert Natalie Grueninger suggests it was gifted by Anne to a woman named Elizabeth Hill.
Elizabeth grew up near Hever Castle, and her husband, Richard Hill, was sergeant of the King’s Cellar at Henry VIII’s court.
There are records of the Hill’s playing cards with the king, and there may have been a friendship between Elizabeth and the queen that prompted Boleyn to pass her prayer book on before her execution.
“This extended Kentish family kept the book safe following Anne’s demise, which was an incredibly brave and bold act considering it could have been considered treasonous,” says Grueninger, podcaster and author of the book The Final Year of Anne Boleyn.
Anne’s Book of Hours was passed between mothers, daughters, sisters, and nieces until the late sixteenth century, when the last name makes its appearance in its margins.
“This story is an example of the women in the family prioritizing loyalty, friendship, fidelity, and a personal connection to Anne,” says McCaffrey.
“The fact that the women have kept it safe is a really beautiful story of solidarity, community, and bravery.”
The book, currently on display at Hever Castle, is a touchstone of the enigma that was Anne Boleyn.
Castle historian and assistant curator Owen Emmerson points out that the book contains Anne’s DNA on the pages from where she touched and kissed it during her daily devotions.
“This was a really beloved possession of hers,” says Emmerson.
“Because of what happened to Anne Boleyn, we don’t have a vast amount of information in Anne’s own words. But the physical remnants of her use of the book, and the construction of that beautiful little couplet, have her identity in them.”
While Anne’s Book of Hours has finally found its way home, the research into this intriguing historical mystery is not yet over.
McCaffrey continues to chart the book’s provenance through the centuries to find out where it was hiding all this time.
The discovery of the inscriptions illuminates the book’s furtive journey, providing us with a glimpse into the controversy, loyalty, and fascination that Anne Boleyn has engendered for the past 500 years.

Strange things are happening in Russia these days. In early October, the country inked a deal to sell chickpeas to Pakistan in exchange for mandarin oranges. A few weeks later, the Russian government advised international participants traveling to the southwestern city of Kazan for the BRICS summit to bring cash in U.S. dollars or euros, as major credit card companies such as Visa and Mastercard have suspended operations on Russian soil since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.
During the BRICS summit, a Chinese official mentioned that Russia is facing “serious difficulties” with paying its membership fees to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation; the official blamed Western sanctions. As if this were not enough, the comment came on the same day that the Kremlin had to cancel bond auctions to issue nearly 600 billion Russian rubles (around $6 billion) in sovereign debt for lack of buyers.
These examples might sound trivial, but taken together, they highlight how all might not be going hunky-dory for the Russian economy—contrary to the Kremlin’s claims that Western sanctions are ineffective and Russian GDP growth is booming. Like a cash-strapped household pretending that all is well while quietly burning through emergency savings, Moscow is trying to project economic normalcy by tapping into its vast financial buffers.
This is not a sustainable strategy: Without fresh inflows of cash, even the largest of savings only last for a while. Russia could soon struggle to preserve costly social stability at home while waging its expensive war against Ukraine.
To understand Russia’s economic troubles, looking at inflation is a good starting point. Official statistics are fishy, but even without consulting them, it’s easy to see that price growth is an issue in Russia. First, the ruble has lost one-third of its value against the U.S. dollar since early 2022, inflating the price of imports and therefore fueling inflation.
Second, Russian firms are struggling to hire because of the combined impact of a shrinking population; a high death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic; and the war in Ukraine, which has killed or seriously wounded 2 percent of Russian men between the ages of 20 and 50, and is causing an exodus of highly skilled workers. To attract workers, Russian companies are raising wages, again fueling inflation. Third, the Kremlin believes that it can buy social stability by showering people with generous handouts—another inflationary factor.
Central bankers like to raise interest rates when inflation is high, seeking to tame price growth by weighing on demand. The Central Bank of Russia has applied these principles to the letter; since mid-2023, it has gradually increased its key rate to a whopping 21 percent. Russian companies are feeling the pinch. This week, Sergei Chemezov, the CEO of state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec, declared that high interest rates are eating into profits so much that most Russian industrial firms could soon go bankrupt. But there is a catch: Because of its obsession with social stability, Moscow is working to negate the impact of high interest rates on the population.
A recent scheme for subsidized loans provides an example of this. Since 2020, millions of Russians have signed up for real estate loans at a cheap rate of 8 percent, while the government has reimbursed banks for the difference between that face rate and the 20 percent or more that higher central bank rates should command. That policy might well boost economic growth in the short term, but it comes with high costs: Home prices in Russia have tripled since 2020, suggesting a real estate bubble that could soon burst. The scheme also comes with a roughly $5 billion price tag for the Kremlin.
Russia’s bigger fiscal picture looks dire. On the expenses side, war is costly, and defense spending keeps rising to record highs: Military expenses will make up 40 percent of Russia’s public spending in 2025, for an eye-popping $142 billion. (National security and “classified” expenses will absorb another 30 percent of Russia’s federal budget.) Russia is also splurging to preserve social stability. In the next six years, the Kremlin plans to spend $431 billion on all sorts of social projects, including sending children to summer camps in occupied Crimea, building brand-new student campuses across Russia, and raising the minimum wage by no less than 10 percent per year.
The revenue side of the fiscal balance does not look any better. Excluding dividends, Russia’s state-owned gas giant Gazprom used to provide around 10 percent of the Kremlin’s fiscal revenues. Such largesse is over: After losing access to the European market, Gazprom recorded a $6.8 billion loss in 2023, making it impossible for the company to transfer money to state coffers. (Gazprom sent $40 billion to the Russian Ministry of Finance in 2022.)
Things could soon get even worse. In a few weeks, a deal allowing the transit of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine will expire, cutting down Moscow’s remaining gas exports to the European Union by half and Russian total gas sales by one-third—for an expected loss of $6.5 billion per year for Gazprom.
Russia only has a few options to find new income streams. Sustained economic growth would raise fiscal revenues through higher taxes, but labor shortages mean that this is not a credible plan. A few weeks ago, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank acknowledged that “available production capacity is depleted.” With social stability a constraining factor, Moscow can only apply fiscal Band-Aids.
Current plans include imposing higher taxes on wealthy households—for a mere $1.5 billion a year, or less than 3 percent of total income tax receipts—and raising tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. It is not clear what Beijing will think of these protectionist measures in light of the supposedly unlimited friendship that binds Russia and China; Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously called U.S. tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles “unfair.”
With ever-rising expenses and dwindling revenues, Russia is now posting an annual fiscal deficit of nearly 2 percent of its GDP. For most economies, this is not an issue. Such a small shortfall can typically easily be financed through debt issuance. But Western sanctions have turned Russia into a pariah on the global financial scene, making it impossible for it to tap global debt markets. Moscow’s plan B was to tap domestic bond markets, but things are not going well on this front, either. Despite having to cancel auctions this month for lack of buyers, the Kremlin has penciled in issuing $25 billion in domestic bonds by the end of the year. So far, it is not getting anywhere.
With debt issuance out of the equation, Russia is now forced to turn to plan C: tapping into its savings. On paper, such a strategy could work for a while thanks to the vast holdings that Moscow accumulated in its National Wealth Fund (NWF) in the 2010s. However, these savings are now drying up: The liquid part of the fund has shrunk by more than half since the start of the war in Ukraine, to just $54 billion in September. Last year, the government stopped saving money in its NWF. Moscow is now resorting to selling the portion of its NWF reserves that it holds in gold; the fund’s gold reserves have shrunk by around half, or about 262 tons of gold, since early 2022.
Russia is depleting its rainy-day holdings, and this cannot last forever. Even assuming high global oil prices, the Kremlin’s 2024 budget includes a further $13 billion drop in NWF holdings this year, or about a quarter of the fund’s liquid reserves. Looking ahead, the NWF’s liquid reserves cover just around a year and a half of budget deficit. This assessment might prove optimistic: It assumes that official fiscal data is trustworthy—some experts believe that Russia’s fiscal deficit could be closer to 5 percent of its GDP—and that the global economy won’t suffer from major shocks. If global growth were to tank, the Central Bank of Russia estimates that the NWF’s liquid reserves could vanish in less than a year.
In September, Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s defense intelligence chief, told attendees at a conference in Kyiv that Russia will try to force an end to the war in 2025, when the Kremlin could start facing genuine economic problems. This analysis might not be too far from the truth—and it will be useful to keep it in mind as calls for negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow grow louder every day.

FFXIV Write 2023: Master Post & Round Up!
Tumblr media
Seven years of FFXIV Write in the bag! Whether this is your first year or your seventh, whether you wrote seven words or seven thousand, GOOD JOB, EVERYONE! And a thank you, as always, to @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast for continuing to host and provide prompts for us year after year.
As with last year, I will not be checking my word count or any other sort of stats; I ended up focusing on that in past years to my detriment, and the point of this challenge is to have fun! It's enough for me that I wrote every day. :D
BUT! October is here--and that it means it's time for my own personal challenge: FFXIV Edit! The heart of FFXIV Write is just to write, regardless of mistakes or roughness, but I do like to go back and revisit my ideas and see if my brain wants to put some more polish on my entries. So, throughout October, I will continue my tradition of posting each of my prompts to AO3 once a day and take the time to give them an edit or expansion or rewrite as I see fit.
Happy FFXIV Write, everyone! And now: THE MASTER POST!

these chapters are inspired by @falloutober’s 31 days of apocalyptic prompts for october 2023 — even though it isn’t being written in october, i just love these titles and wanted to work with them <3
this madness is in a semi-organized timeline, and i've included a lot of ocs and changes to canon because i think it's fun, so to get a clear view of the story i recommend reading it in the order it's posted. but if you don't want to, don't worry about it! i've tried to make everything as simple as possible so that each fic can be standalone as well as part of a series.

October is over so here is the post that has links to all my works from October 2023 (I tried for inktober but low high-key failed).
Under 'inktober' I've put only the works that are fully (or mostly that is) ink.
If you see something twice that means it fits both categories I guess.
Inktober
Day 02
Day 04
Day 07
Day 09
Day 10
Day 12
Day 14
Day 18
Day 20 (unnecessary feelings but this time it's drawn with ink)
Day 21
Day 23
Day 24
Day 27

Day 29
Day 30
Day 31
Spocktober
Day 01

Unnecessary feelings
Gojo
So, I made 17 for inktober, 24 for Spocktober and 4 other drawings that don't fit either.
As you can see, I didn't follow any schedule, maybe next year.

I hope everyone enjoyed these and happy rest of the autumn (because it's still November pls let it be for a few days it's not Christmas yet)

Wellness Wednesday:
The Groundhog Day Diet
Sunday I officially started my Groundhog Day Diet (the same daily meal on repeat). Obviously the name of the diet stems from the 1993 Bill Murray film, but the month long challenge was more inspired by Morgan Spurlock's 2004 documentary, Super Size Me (a challenge to eat McDonald's for 30 days straight).
I settled on the following specific daily foods for the month:
Lunch:
Turkey & Swiss Sandwich, a Side of Baby Carrots, a Cup Peaches
Snack:
A Serving of Trail Mix
Supper:
Bowl of Soup and a Glass of Milk.
All ^that^ comes out to approximately 1,290 Calories.
Now, I didn't necessarily do this to keep better tabs on my calories - no - I merely did it to see if I could do it - or - better yet see how long before my tongue goes mad.
As well, I am hoping this "diet" will assist my pocketbook as I have planned out my meals, purchased a large majority of all my fixings, thus hopefully minimizing my grocery bill for the month of October. The only items I forsee having to purchase is fresh Turkey, Bread, Milk, and Carrots.
So far, 4 days in, things aren't too shabby. I wish I would have thrown in some popcorn to booster my snack intake... but... I'll know better for next time.

2023: A Year in Review
Ko-Fi Version | Substack Version | Patreon Version
The other day I had a minor depressive episode, which is something I haven't experienced for a few months. I spent much of the day feeling like a failure, a burden, like I was incapable of doing anything right.
Today, I sit down and I look back at everything I've done and everything that's happened this year, and I'm stunned at how productive and momentous 2023 has been for me, in both my personal and professional lives.
To start off, I released three books this year: my short story collection, In Our Hearts We're Dreaming, came first, in February. Then in May I released the sixth ScaleGuard novel on Kindle Unlimited, officially beginning the second half of that series. Finally, October saw the release of my horror novella, The Last Day.
I entered my novel The Ghosts in the Flames into two competitions this year: the Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off and the Book Blogger's Novel of the Year Award. It received a review through SPFBO, but didn't make it past the first round. However, it made it to the Semi-Finals of BBNYA, and while it didn't move on to the finals, the panelists did have some kind things to say about it.
I also started my Substack this year, and saw growth in my Patreon and the first recurring subscriber to my Ko-Fi. I made good on something I had mused about doing last year (writing about my inspirations) with my Morrowind essay, the Substack version of which was the most popular post I made in 2023.
Outside the realm of self-publishing, I successfully sold a short story this year for the first time as well: "Zombie" was performed by Jesse Cornett in the paid version of The NoSleep Podcast, Season 19 Episode 14.
Most recently, The Last Day has been nominated for the Indie Ink Awards, and as of this writing, voting is currently open. The book has been nominated for the categories of Best Morally Gray Character, Best Setting, and Best Use of Tropes, and I would appreciate it if you sent some votes my way.
In terms of my personal life, 2023 has been quite the adventure. I got two raises, moved to a new apartment with my girlfriend, and lost my car! Those last two actually happened at the same time--the morning of the move, I went out to my car and discovered that it wouldn't start. After months of using public transport and waiting on the mechanics to get the necessary part to fix it, it was eventually confirmed that the repair would cost more than the car was worth, so I sold it for scrap.
My girlfriend as well had an adventurous year, though hers is not my story to tell. Suffice to say she was hospitalized twice this year in the span of a single month, first due to a horse, then due to a car accident. I can't express how relieved I am that she made a full recovery in both cases.
I have two more posts planned to hopefully go up before the end of the year: a review of the first Conan story, and a spotlight of some books I read this year. So look forward to those.
Overall, 2023 has been a wild ride. Here's to 2024. May it bring even more triumphs and successes.

31 Prompts for October: Horror
Day 19:Necromancy
The night was dark and stormy, and the graveyard was silent except for the sound of thunder and rain. A hooded figure walked among the tombstones, holding a lantern in one hand and a book in the other. He stopped at a grave marked with a cross and a name: "Evelyn Carter, beloved wife and mother, 1998-2023". He knelt down and opened the book, which was filled with ancient symbols and spells. He began to chant in a low voice, tracing a circle around the grave with his finger.
"By the power of the dark arts, I summon you from the realm of the dead. Rise, Evelyn Carter, and speak to me. Answer my questions and reveal your secrets. Come forth, by the name of Necromancy!"
A flash of lightning illuminated the grave, and a crack appeared on the surface. The hooded figure smiled and waited for his wife to emerge. He had spent months searching for this book, which contained the secrets of necromancy. He had sacrificed everything for this moment, hoping to see her face again and ask her why she left him. Why she took her own life without a word of explanation.
He heard a groan from the grave, and saw a hand reaching out from the crack. He grabbed it and pulled, expecting to see his wife's beautiful face. But what he saw instead was a horror that made him scream.
The hand was rotten and decayed, with bones showing through the flesh. The face was even worse, with maggots crawling out of the eye sockets and mouth. The hair was falling out in clumps, and the skin was peeling off. The creature looked nothing like his wife, but it spoke with her voice.
"Hello, darling. Did you miss me?"
The hooded figure dropped the lantern and the book, and ran away from the grave. He tripped over a tombstone and fell to the ground, hitting his head on a rock. He lay there unconscious, bleeding from his wound.
The creature crawled out of the grave and followed him. It reached him and bent over his body, whispering in his ear.
"I missed you too, darling. But you shouldn't have disturbed my rest. Necromancy is a forbidden art, and it has a price. A terrible price."
It opened its mouth and bit into his neck, tearing out his flesh. It fed on his blood, until he was drained of life. Then it dragged his corpse back to the grave, and buried him next to her.
The storm passed, and the sun rose over the graveyard. The lantern was still burning, and the book was still open. On the last page, there was a warning written in red ink:
"Beware of necromancy, for it is an abomination. The dead are not meant to be disturbed, nor are they meant to return. Those who practice this art will suffer a fate worse than death. They will lose their souls, and become slaves of the dark forces."
No one ever read that warning, or learned what happened to the hooded figure and his wife. They remained in their grave, together but not in peace. And sometimes, on stormy nights, their voices could be heard from below.
"Hello, darling. Did you miss me?"

10 best royal exhibitions to continue the Coronation celebrations, from Buckingham Palace to Blenheim
The day of the Coronation is over but these remarkable royal exhibitions across the UK means the excitement doesn’t need to be
By Natasha Leake
18 May 2023
The glow from King Charles III’s Coronation is starting to fade, but there is plenty more pomp and ceremony to be discovered at these extraordinary royal exhibitions currently being staged across the country.
Stately homes and royal palaces have transformed their sumptuous rooms into backdrops for stunning showcases of royal regalia, period costumes and mementos of past Coronations.
From Blair Castle to Castle Howard; Blenheim to Buckingham Palace, book a date at one of these must-see royal exhibitions to keep the celebrations going.

Through a carefully curated selection of more than 200 pieces, the Kensington Palace fashion exhibition draws parallels between the pomp, ceremony and performance of the contemporary red carpet and the pressure to ‘see and be seen’ at Georgian court.
One-of-a-kind creations worn by Lizzo, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga et al. are juxtaposed with outfits worn by 18th century movers and shakers in the State Apartments, which, handily, is where the showcase is staged.

Blenheim Palace is using the occasion of the Coronation to celebrate its historic connection with the Royal Family.
With a collection of previously unseen artefacts, crowns, coronets, robes, and photo albums, take a trip into the world of royal fashion with an impeccably restored Norman Hartnell silk gown, worn by the then Rosemary Spencer-Churchill to the Queen’s Coronation in 1953.
Also on display are costumes from Bridgerton and The Crown, and a page from a Blenheim visitor’s book, which includes the elegant inked signatures of Wallis Simpson (the future Duchess of Windsor) and her second husband, Ernest A. Simpson.

Originally launched in 2022, the award-winning Castle Couture exhibition returns this summer to Blair Castle, the ancestral home of the Atholl family, with an extended edition that showcases statement designs, intricate embroidery, innovative textiles, and style influences from the 18th century through to the 20th century.
Among the highlights are delightfully delicate ostrich feather and Brussels lace fans by the renowned Parisienne craftsman Duvelleroy, the appointed supplier to Queen Victoria.
There are also pieces from the personal collection of the late Katharine Stewart-Murray, Duchess of Atholl, Scotland’s first Scottish female Member of Parliament.

In a homage to the Regency period, visitors are invited to take a step back into the world of the Georgians with an exhibition that looks at how fashion trends reflected the significant trade, travel and technological advances of the period.
A highlight of the exhibition is a rarely displayed, full-length portrait of Queen Charlotte (of Bridgerton fame) by Thomas Gainsborough, dated from around 1781, which usually hangs in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle.
The showcase also features one of the earliest surviving British royal wedding dresses: a stunning gown worn by Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1816.

The late Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved corgis captured the hearts of the nation the late monarch’s funeral.
Now they are being celebrated as part of a free exhibition at the Wallace Collection, in central London.
The one-room display features touching imagery of the Queen with her corgis.
It coincides with the museum’s exhibition, ‘Portraits of Dogs: From Gainsborough to Hockney,’ which celebrates human devotion to dogs over the centuries through a carefully curated selection of 50 paintings, sculptures, drawings and taxidermy.

Situated in a pair of beautifully restored early Georgian townhouses, the exhibition showcases centuries of royal fans from across the globe, including a special, printed, English fan marking the restoration of Charles II and the contemporary fans made by The Fan Museum in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.
The exhibition promises to be ‘not merely a look back on what has been but a rally of hope for what is to come.’
King Charles III has also taken an avid interest in the Fan Museum’s work.

The Long Gallery at Castle Howard, home to the Howard family for more than 300 years, is hosting an incredible exhibition featuring an exact replica of the Crown Jewels and peers’ robes worn to coronations gone by.
Set in 10,000 glorious acres on the edge of the Yorkshire moors, Castle Howard was commissioned in 1699 by the 3rd Earl of Carlisle from Sir John Vanbrugh, who later conceived Blenheim Palace.
The 1st Earl of Carlisle was descended from Lord William Howard, the youngest son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk (the current Duke of Norfolk organised the King and Queen’s Coronation).

During the last Coronation, the hotel had to secure extra flagpoles in order to fly banners for the many different royals and dignitaries staying there.
The archive overflows with Coronation material, which is why Claridge’s unveiled a space showcasing the hotel’s status as ‘the Royal Hostelry.’
Mementos on display include pages from Queen Victoria’s diary, fans created for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, and Claridge’s menus and cocktail cards created for the coronations of King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

The world watched in awe as the newly crowned King Charles III and Queen Camilla processed from Westminster Abbey back to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach.
This extraordinary regal treasure is available to view at the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, alongside the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, which transported Their Majesties to the Abbey ahead of the service.
Also housed in the mews? The famous Windsor Grey horses, which drew the magnificent carriages on the day.

At the epicentre of the Coronation was Westminster Abbey. So where better to delve into the gilded history of the captivating service?
A new exhibition in the Chapter House reveals the key elements of the royal ceremony, which has taken place at the Abbey for nearly a thousand years.
Featuring historic illustrations and archive photography, it promises to unpack and explain the Coronation’s magnificent ceremonial regalia and objects.

From The Experts: Media And Advertising In 2021

From The Experts: Media And Advertising In 2021
The short-lived Quibi was one of the casualties of the pandemic ridden 2020, nonetheless many media … [] experts expects 2021 to be banner year for connected TV devices and streaming video. Photographer: David Paul Morris/Bloomberg
By all accounts 2020 was a miserable year. A global pandemic led to an economic recession impacting the ad marketplace. Production studios the television and film industry. Stay-at-home orders closed retail stores and movie theaters. Viewers migrated to home entertainment, HBO Max, Peacock and the short lived Quibi were launched. Sporting events were either canceled, suspended or postponed such as the Tokyo Olympics. Meanwhile, there was a contentious election and in January the U.S. will have a new President. What else could happen in 2021? We asked some experts.
Tim Jones, CEO, Publicis Media Americas
“The old rules no longer apply: Cookies are going away, commerce has exploded and consumer expectations are driving the industry towards new future proofing opportunities and structures. In order for brands to succeed in a platform world, they must be digitally-resilient, have identity systems to provide personalization at scale and have the infrastructure set up to deliver relevant and meaningful experiences. When brands progress in all of these areas, they can create long-term consumer value and maintain a competitive advantage that will last far beyond any crisis lifecycle.”
Rob Davis, President & CMO, Novus Next
“Two growing marketer needs that were accelerated by the pandemic will extend into 2021: flexibility and customization.  Long-term media deals are becoming ever-rarer as advertisers face continued economic and operational uncertainty; they need increasing flexibility to quickly pull back or shut off their advertising.  Similarly, many brands—be they regional or national in distribution— will increasingly be looking to local media to help adapt to the wide array of local COVID regulations, closures and variance in consumer demand.  Geo-targeted media will offer the needed customization. ”
Esther Maguire SVP of Marketing, VideoAmp
“Connected TV Prevails: It’s important to reach people when they’re most receptive to consuming ads, that’s why Connected TV will remain as a powerful medium for connecting the dots between awareness and attribution in 2021. One-to-one engagement is an advertiser’s dream, but from a privacy perspective, it’s difficult to make those connections. Barriers and regulations like GDPR, new PII classifications and the death of the cookie are only the beginning. People want to make authentic connections with brands, not feel like a target. For an advertiser to find the right moments to connect with consumers, CTV should be in their arsenal.”
Brian Morrison, CEO, Terraboost Media
“The heaviest OOH spenders currently are companies thriving during the COVID era, such as Amazon AMZN and Netflix NFLX . While roadside traffic and commutes are down, consumers still must travel to supermarkets, drugstores, and doctors’ offices. Terraboost Media has built a network 100,000 hand sanitizing billboards located at the entrances and pharmacy wait areas of retailers such as CVS, Rite Aid, and Stop & Shop. CPM are low, frequency high, and OOH affords opportunities to break through the clutter in ways other media cannot replicate. Our hand sanitizing billboards provide advertisers the ability to sponsor health and wellness and keep families safe.”
Bill Harvey, Executive Chairman, Bill Harvey Consulting
“Optimism will rise as vaccinations reverse the pandemic tide. Because this will happen unevenly by market, brands will increase their use of local media and rediscover its ability to find growth pockets for nationally topped-out brands. First results of trials of the WFA/ANA cross-platform measurement specifications will reveal that panel data cannot be used as a truth source and that combining big and panel data is more complicated but do-able. DCT expansion will result in new ROAS compilations that will benefit all television forms. Addressable TV will become easier to buy and more national network inventory will become addressable.”
Abhay Singhal, co-founder and CEO, InMobi
“Time spent using mobile apps rose to new heights in 2020, and apps will likely be even more popular in 2021. After all, Americans have been spending more time looking at their mobile device screens than they’ve spent watching TV since 2019, according to eMarketer. For media and entertainment companies (and really all advertisers), it’s critical to reach their target audience where they are: using mobile apps. Savvy marketers will increasingly leverage mobile in-app advertising in the coming months, taking advantage of its viewability, addressability and scale, among other benefits.”
Kym Frank, President, Geopath
“The emergence of outcome-based planning and buying that we saw take root over the past two years will flourish in 2021, especially as more granular data becomes available across all platforms. Consumers who were previously restricting their mobility will emerge from their homes – hungry for experiences and interactions. Marketers will look to leverage this increased out of home activity so that they can make up sales ground lost in 2020. That will mean an emphasis on using dollars efficiently by engaging with consumers where they can best convert them to purchase. It’s a convergence of events that we feel will lead to a solid year for OOH ad growth.”
Naveen Wall, Associate Director of Client Strategy, Movable Ink
“Customer retention will remain critical for streaming services as consumers reduce discretionary spending. As Pay TV households decline, the appetite for subscription stacking will grow (the stacking of several services on top of one another). Competition will heat up with new Subscription Video on Demand entrants, tiered pricing, and free ad-supported video services as consumers supplement their streaming diet with free alternatives. SVOD will continue growing, however, projections forecast a slowdown peaking in 2024 due to an overcrowded market and subscription fatigue. This places increased importance in 2021 on building loyalty and driving adoption with superior content and customer experience.”
Tim Vanderhook, CEO, Viant Technology
“Connected TV (CTV) is growing in importance which is fueling the shift away from device identification and toward household identification as vital to the new digital ecosystem. As constant market disruption is accelerating consumer consumption changes, industry leaders need to have eyes on every device in the home. Marketers who embrace household measurement will gain a clearer picture of return on ad spend (ROAS) and the true impact of their advertising campaigns.”
Yashina Burns, Director, Data Privacy and Legal Affairs, DeepIntent,
“While CPRA won’t become law until 2023, other states will likely create similar regulations in the interim and further push the ad industry to adopt targeting technologies that are more conscious of consumer privacy. Marketing leaders need to get ready now by focusing on privacy-friendly solutions that limit the use of sensitive personal information. Publishers and platforms that offer compliant data collection across platforms – especially in the healthcare space where privacy is of the utmost importance – will be well-positioned to continue the services they offer to marketers amid the coming regulatory change.”
Michael Schoen, SVP/GM of Marketing Solutions, Neustar
“While entities like Gartner IT  and the U.S. Census Bureau have endorsed differential privacy, it’s not understood or used widely within the marketing ecosystem. In 2021, we’ll start to see a seismic shift in marketers leveraging differential privacy algorithms as a way to provide highly accurate multi-touch attribution without requiring individual-level advertising impression data. Advances in privacy like this are needed because traditional privacy safeguards, like anonymization, have been found to be ineffective. This advanced data science approach ensures brands can measure advertising performance across closed media platforms in a privacy-centric way without relying on third-party cookies and MAIDs.”
Bill Magnuson, co-founder and CEO, Braze
“In 2021, streaming brands will need to step up their sophisticated retention efforts. Despite the saturation in streaming as new user growth has declined for two consecutive months (September to October saw a 46% decrease in new user acquisition), there’s still new streaming services being rolled out. While new content is slowing down significantly, and as we continue to see a “k-shaped” economic recovery, streaming services will focus on retention activity and getting more out of their existing customers. Industry leaders have already prioritized lifecycle marketing where everything from onboarding to ongoing customer engagement is examined and tested every day.”
Raman Abrol, General Manager and Chief Commercial Officer, Amdocs Media
“COVID-19 accelerated the debate around theatrical runs, premium VOD and a streaming-centric future. Disney’s Premier Access of Mulan, along with WarnerMedia and AT&T’s T approach with Wonder Woman, are redefining release windows. As consumers remain cautious about returning to theaters, expect several options to be explored in 2021, like condensing traditional release windows, partnerships between theaters and studios to share VOD revenue, and experimentation by theaters in new areas like e-gaming, e-sports, luxury experiences and corporate seminars. We’ll see revised premium recurring bundles that incorporate several of these unique experiences in the home, providing new revenue opportunities for content platforms and service providers.”
Amanda Shelton, VP, Product, Valassis
“Amid the pandemic with people spending more time at home, connected TV grew exponentially in 2020. There are certain consumers that simply cannot be reached on traditional TV anymore – only streaming or CTV platforms. Going into 2021, this momentum will lead to continued rapid growth in this channel. That said, we’ll see several changes in the advertising marketplace. For starters, advertisers will demand increased transparency around reporting, in terms of what content consumers are viewing, which publishers the ads are running on and their return on advertising spend.”
Mahesh Narayanan, President of Affinity Answers
“In 2021, I won’t be surprised if some media companies enter the TV device market or Internet TV market (via stick, like Roku or Amazon Fire TV Stick), to control the end-user experience. Negotiations like HBO Max on Amazon Fire and Roku, took forever and has definitely impacted subscriber growth. AT&T has WarnerMedia, Comcast CMCSA has NBCU, so a Verizon VZ , ViacomCBS merger won’t be surprising to me. Marketing content on TV devices will become like an SEO exercise. Sponsored search results on TV devices (like Roku, Samsung) may become an increasingly adopted tactic.”
Kristin Dolan, Founder & CEO, 605
“Fragmentation of TV puts premium on data-driven audiences. With the ongoing pandemic, we’ve seen more people spend more time at home – in front of screens, so the attention paid to how people watch television is more relevant than ever. An abundance of programming, on new platforms, designed for niche audiences means an increasingly fragmented TV environment that places a premium on data-driven insights. To succeed, especially when working with constrained budgets, advertisers will need to determine where and when their target audiences are consuming TV content to uncover and most effectively reach these new audience segments.”
Daniel Elad, Chief Strategy Officer at TheViewPoint
“The pandemic has seriously impacted businesses across the globe. Hence, many have abandoned particular ad channels, but not CTV. Since March 2020, the ad dollars poured into CTV have reached a total of $8.11B, and this figure will account for $11.36B next year. Since we’re entering another pandemic year, I believe TV upfront deals will remain on pause. Meanwhile, more dollars will be shifting via programmatic pipes, and the pandemic will expedite this process. Unlike TV upfront, programmatic offers better flexibility for allocating ad spend, providing granular targeting and the opportunity to manage campaigns on-the-fly.”
Buzz Knight, CEO/Founder, Buzz Knight Media
“The balance sheets of broadcast companies will continue trending with lower margins yielding more experimentation to create new revenue streams. Diversity will continue to be an important boardroom topic and there will be small improvements by the audio industry as it relates to content creation and business implementation. Ad attribution methods will continue to evolve, improve and grow via new forms of technology that will help advertisers track campaign performance. New measurement options will emerge allowing broadcasters to add other forms of data to the story they are telling advertisers. Talent will begin to migrate to other distribution platforms as their fear of the future will continue to creep in.”
Matthew O’Connor, CEO, AdQuick
“Out-of-home advertising will rebound at a frenetic pace in 2021, but this comeback won’t happen simultaneously across all regions. What we’ll see is advertisers in a sprint to reclaim out-of-home media in high traffic commuter areas as people come back to work. Airport advertising, transit advertising and large billboards in Los Angeles and New York will rebound first as advertisers seek to target prospective B2B software and direct-to-consumer customers.”
James Heller, CEO and Co-Founder, Wrapify
“In 2021, I believe we will see large brands thinking more granularly about how media is purchased. As a result, there will likely be a shift from national campaigns towards more hyperlocal campaigns as more consumers leave major metropolitan areas where the population is denser and not as conducive to the work-from-home environment. There will be a big push for transit and out-of-home advertising next year if a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, but the challenge will be if the traditional media business will be able to handle the uptick in demand.”
Anne Hunter, VP of Product Marketing, DISQO
“2021 will see marketers increase focus on consumer privacy as legal requirements, technology environments and consumer expectations continue to evolve. Advertisers must bring ethics to their strategies as they ready themselves for a future without cookies — and privacy can no longer simply be treated as a box to be checked in compliance.  2020 brought a reckoning to companies across numerous dimensions, from how they treated their people and customers through the pandemic to their efforts supporting inclusion and representation. Across the board, there is an increasing premium on clarity of purpose and authenticity. In 2021, this will extend further into transparency around data collection with consent and trust.”
Jo Kinsella, President, TVSquared
“TV has undergone warp-speed acceleration, with transparent, cross-platform measurement and automation at scale empowering buyers and sellers to be more collaborative and agile than ever before. In 2021, we need to take what we learned from 2020 and continue to shake up the long-standing narrative around TV. For marketers, it means being completely data-driven with their TV campaigns – employing test-and-learn strategies to identify the right audiences and maximize reach and engagement across platforms and devices. For sellers, it’s about providing transparent, timely proof of performance and bringing next-level flexibility to planning and buying to meet advertiser demand and protect and grow ad spend.”

10 To Watch : Mayor’s Edition 102819
RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 28 : MAYOR’S EDITION
with Jacob Aere
Under Armour and Nike announce CEO shifts on the same day. Last Tuesday, Under Armour announced that founder Kevin Plank was stepping down from his CEO role, just as Nike was letting the world know that Mark Parker, a 40-year Nike veteran, was likewise assuming a different role at the $40 billion company. While Under Armour struggled financially under Plank, Parker oversaw a profitable but controversial period for Nike. In Maryland, Plank will become Under Armour executive chairman and brand chief. The changes come as the company's North American sales are struggling. In Oregon, Parker led Nike through a period of tremendous growth but also saw his leadership challenged by a number of controversies. While Nike earnings are currently ahead of expectations, the company has also been plagued by recent scandals, including a doping accusation that saw Nike shutter its renowned track and field program, and a sexual misconduct and gender discrimination case. Plank will be replaced by COO Patrik Frisk, who will assume the CEO role on January 1. Parker will step down January 13 and be replaced by John Donahoe, CEO of ServiceNow Inc. and chairman of PayPal Holdings.
There’s no shortage of intrigue and excitement surrounding this year’s match up, as the Washington Nationals square off against the Houston Astros in the 115th World Series. As the Series enters its second week with the Astros leading the Nationals 3-2, WalletHub takes a closer look at everything that makes the Series such a special event. For starters, the number 53 marks the combined number of years of the Astros' and Nationals' World Series droughts. While the Astros won the Series in 2017, it's been 51 years since the team formerly known as the Montreal Expos won a championship. Forbes values the two teams at roughly the same number, $1.8 billion, and the two teams have roughly the same team salary allotment, in the $207-$208 million range. The projected ad revenue for FOX for each game beyond the minimum four to win the Series is $45.7 million. And finally, for the eventual winner, the "Commissioner's Trophy" crafted by Tiffany and Company has an estimated physical value of $19,000.
The San Francisco 49ers will include basic food and beverages in the cost of season tickets starting in 2020, marking a major shift in concessions strategy. According to 49ers President Al Guido, the all-inclusive approach will not extend to season tickets resold on the secondary market, or to single-game buyers. The undefeated 49ers have about 60,000 season-ticket holders in a stadium that seats 68,500. In market research, Guido said season-ticket holders “overwhelmingly” reported they are willing to pay more than what the stadium currently makes on each fan to get concessions included. The non-transferability of the food & beverage deal is possible under Ticketmaster’s mobile ticketing system that assigns unique barcodes to every user. Items that will be free include chicken tenders, beef and vegan hot dogs, hot links, nachos, fries, pretzels, popcorn, peanuts candies, water, coffee, and all Pepsi products. The 49ers and concessionaire Levy have reportedly been studying the change since Levy won Levi’s Stadium business in February, 2018. It took more than a year of research to determine whether it could be done without causing prohibitive financial or operational costs.
The Green Bay Packers and Microsoft raised $25 million for their TitletownTech business innovation fund. The TitletownTech fund reached its goal of $25 million with the addition of a dozen Wisconsin-based investors, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. The Packers and Microsoft each committed $5 million to the fund, which will invest in high-growth early-stage and existing businesses aligned with industries in northeastern Wisconsin. Other investors in the accelerator program include Boston Bruins alternative governor Jerry Jacobs, Jr. and New York Mets COO Jeff Wilpon, both of whom sit on the TitletownTech advisory board. TitletownTech, a technology and innovation-focused campus in the Packers' Titletown District development near Lambeau Field, includes an innovation lab, a business solutions space called a venture studio, and the venture fund's headquarters. Moving forward, its work will focus on five business silos: sports, media, and entertainment; digital health; agriculture, water, and environment; advanced manufacturing; and supply chain technology. The Packers-Microsoft partnership is just the latest example of how sports franchises are thinking way outside the mixed-use stadium district development box to benefit their communities.
NFL Players Coalition, Meek Mill, and others host Philadelphia Town Hall event. On Monday, October 28, global music streaming and entertainment platform, TIDAL will be live streaming, for free, the NFL Players Coalition Town Hall Event in Philadelphia. The event, according to a TIDAL release, will feature rapper Meek Mill, co-founder of Players Coalition/NFL Player Malcolm Jenkins, and other influencers discussing what the city of Philadelphia wants in its next police commissioner. Players Coalition aims to make an impact on social justice and racial equality through advocacy, awareness, education, and allocation of resources. TIDAL’s support of key social justice issues has been a pillar of the streaming service’s mission since its inception, and it is committed to amplifying conversations through the platform that will lead to a better future globally. The Philadelphia town hall meeting, and others like it nationally, are testaments to the NFL’s commitment to support social justice issues important to its players, alumni, and fans. Time will tell if the Players Coalition, with the league’s support, will truly be able to influence grassroots issues in the cities in which its games are played.
Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney and his $9.3 million annual salary have taken over the top spot in the annual USA Today coaches’ salary database. Rounding out the top five are Nick Saban ($8.9 million), Jim Harbaugh ($7.5 million), Jimbo Fisher ($7.5 million), and Kirby Smart ($6.9 million). Notably, the top 83 coaches included in the list of 130 schools earned more than $1 million annually in salary alone. Also, the average total pay for the 122 FBS coaches for whom USA TODAY Sports could obtain compensation figures is $2.67 million, up 9% compared to last season – the increase is the largest in four years. And, for the first time, there is a league in which all of the coaches are making at least $3 million. That league is the 14-school Southeastern Conference, in which the average total pay is $4.95 million. College football coaches have seen salaries sky rocket in the last 10 years, meanwhile college athlete compensation is set to kick off in California come 2023.
The NBA has confirmed that Salt Lake City will host the 2023 NBA All-Star Game. The 72nd   edition of the mid-season exhibition match, which sees teams selected by a combination of fan, player, and media voting, will be staged at Vivint Smart Home Arena, the home of the Utah Jazz, February 19 2023. The event will mark the 30th anniversary of the only previous time Utah’s capital city hosted the All-Star Game in 1993, when the Vivint Smart Home Arena was known as the Delta Center. The NBA’s 2023 All-Star festivities will kick off February 17 that year, featuring additional programming for fans at venues throughout Salt Lake City. The league also plans to run a full schedule of NBA Cares and Diversity & Inclusion events. “Along with a rich basketball tradition, Salt Lake City has proven to be a world-class destination for large-scale events and sports competitions,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. “I want to thank the Miller Family and the Utah Jazz organization for their commitment to hosting our All-Star festivities and to developing a program that will leave a lasting impact on the community.” Added Jazz owner Gail Miller, “The memory of John Stockton and Karl Malone sharing MVP honors 30 years ago remains strong.  We are excited to create new memories for this generation of NBA fans.” Next year’s All-Star Game is being held at Chicago’s United Center before heading to Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis in 2021.
National Women’s Soccer League inks an exclusive deal with Octagon for media rights and marketing consulting. The sports world aims to tackle ocean plastic pollution. According to SportTechie, a research expedition embarked from the southwest coast of the U.K., on a two-year mission to sail westward around the world. The crew aboard the S.V. TravelEdge, a 73-foot floating laboratory, will travel 38,000-nautical-miles and cross all five of the world’s major ocean gyres, regions where rotating currents lead to the accumulation of floating plastic waste. The 300 women joining the all-female rotating team will investigate to find solutions to plastic pollution. The “eXXpedition Round The World” is being organized by sailor Emily Penn, who is among a growing group of athletes and people connected to the sports world that is advocating for and taking action to protect the environment. Another goal of Penn’s journey is to create a global network of ambassadors who can advocate to help solve the problem. She has been working with a larger environmental organization called 11th Hour Racing over the last few years to give talks and run workshops for other sailors to learn how they can play a role in tackling plastic pollution. By having athletes tackle environmental problems head on, they can use their social influence to be advocates for policy and lifestyle change.
Seven NFL dads partner with Pampers to install changing tables in their local communities. According to Business Wire, Pampers’ commitment to install 5,000 changing tables across North America by 2021 secured the help of seven hands-on NFL dads today. In honor of October 26’s National Make a Difference Day, Pampers is leading the installation of changing tables in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, Detroit and Charlotte so all parents can #LoveTheChange in public places. The seven players include Sterling Shepard of the New York Giants, Tevin Coleman of the San Francisco 49ers, Marvin Jones Jr. of the Detroit Lions, Brian Westbrook of the Philadelphia Eagles, Derek Wolfe of the Denver Broncos, Matt Forte of the Chicago Bears, and Dontari Poe of the Carolina Panthers. The changing tables help to address the changing table inequality for men who care for babies and by using seven NFL dads the topic will gain more limelight.

Why a bridge deal could be what’s best for Leafs’ Nylander
The Maple Leafs want a long-term deal. William Nylander wants a long-term deal. But maybe what’s best for both is a short-term pact.
On Tuesday night in Lucan, Ont., the Toronto Maple Leafs will take the ice for their first tilt of the pre-season. Mitch Marner will be there. Nazem Kadri is set to suit up. John Tavares, arguably the most monumental free-agent signing in NHL history, will pull on the blue-and-white for his first game action with the Leafs. But amid all the excitement, there will still be one question on the minds of Toronto faithful: what exactly is going on with William Nylander?
Now that training camp is well underway, Nylander, 22, has become conspicuous by his absence. And with each passing day, the concerns surrounding his contract status — he’s a restricted free agent without any pact of which to speak — are growing. What we know is only what we’ve heard or what the two parties involved, Nylander and the Maple Leafs, have let us in on. The ask from Nylander appears to be a long-term contract, one that sees him paid handsomely and a rate commensurate with other top young stars. And while Toronto, it would seem, is interested in going long with Nylander, the money has seemingly become the greatest sticking point.
To be sure, Nylander’s value is hard to peg. Early off-season suggestions were that Nylander was seeking north of $8 million annually. More recent reports have indicated that the sweet spot, particularly for the Maple Leafs, may be somewhere in the $6 million to $6.5-million range. And the case can certainly be made for both.
Leon Draisaitl, for instance, signed an eight-year, $68-million contract with the Edmonton Oilers coming off of his second and third NHL seasons in which he accumulated 48 goals and 128 points in 154 games. That’s comparable to Nylander’s 42 goals and 122 points in 163 games during his same seasons. The argument against a similar payday is that Draisaitl is pegged as a second-line center while the Maple Leafs, especially with Tavares now aboard, will be sticking Nylander on the wing for the foreseeable future. Less versatility and less impact equals a lower rate of pay.
One can see, too, why the Leafs are eyeing something in the mid-$6 millions. Statistically, there are similar comparisons, chief among which is Nikolaj Ehlers. The Winnipeg Jets inked him to a seven-year, $42-million deal ahead of last season, and Ehlers has accumulated 54 goals and 124 points across his second and third NHL campaigns. Granted, the contract might not be a perfect one-for-one comparison given it was signed prior to Ehlers beginning the aforementioned third season. Last season’s output could have inflated the asking price.
Regardless, with the two sides seemingly stuck in a state of financial impasse, one wonders why there hasn’t been more consideration given to a short-term deal that simply gets Nylander locked up for the time being.
The obvious benefit for the Maple Leafs in a bridge deal in the immediate view is that it gets Nylander, a shoo-in for another 20-goal, 60-point season, back in the lineup. Not that the Maple Leafs’ lineup is in any dire need of additional firepower, but Nylander is one more bullet in the chamber for a Toronto outfit that will be able to run and gun with anyone this coming campaign. That’s not to mention the short-term financial flexibility that a bridge deal would offer that a long-term contract simply will not. While it may not be the most pressing issue this season, what with the Maple Leafs having upwards of $13 million in projected cap space this season, the additional cap space a short-term deal offers could be of benefit next summer when Matthews, Marner and a stable of others enter varying stages of free agency. It also won’t hurt when the trade deadline comes around during the 2018-19 or 2019-20 campaigns.
Of course, with bridge contracts generally coming with lesser cap hits, such a deal would assuredly see Nylander sacrifice some of his earnings for a couple seasons. But what Nylander loses in the coming campaigns he’d be almost guaranteed to make up the moment he puts pen to paper on his next contract. It’d be a bet on himself, somewhat of a gamble, to be sure, but it would seem foolish to suggest Nylander can’t increase his asking price with each consecutive season.
In fact, who’s to say Nylander can’t go out and pull a Nikita Kucherov? When Kucherov inked his almost absurdly team-friendly three-year bridge deal with Tampa Bay in October 2016, it came on the heels of the Lightning winger asserting himself as an offensive star thanks to second and third NHL campaigns in which he racked up 59 goals and 121 points in 159 games. The assumed asking price on a long-term deal at the time was in the $7-million range. And while he settled for far less at roughly $4.8 million per season, Kucherov turned the bridge deal into a bank-breaking contract. He signed an eight-year extension this summer that carries a $9.5-million cap hit after stuffing the scoresheet to the tune of 79 goals and 185 points across the past two seasons.
Kucherov’s long-term deal is evidence of the potential for significant financial gain that can come from a player biting the bullet on a bridge deal, too. If Kucherov had signed an eight-year deal at $7 million per season ahead of the 2016-17 campaign, he would have earned an additional $6.6 million in salary by the end of the 2018-19 season. But Kucherov is also going to earn $12.5 million more over the next five seasons than he would had he been locked in on an eight-year, $56-million contract two seasons back. All told, he’ll come out nearly $6 million ahead come the end of the 2023-24 season, and he’ll still have another $28.5 million yet to be paid out. Not bad.
This is to say that a bridge deal, while it saves the Maple Leafs money now and might seem more favorable for Toronto, could be a worthwhile gambit for Nylander. If he believes he can be an $8-million player — or if he feels his value is even greater than that — he would have two seasons to prove it. And if he makes good on his yet untapped potential, Nylander could put himself in a better financial position long-term than any lengthy pact he signs today could possibly offer.
