An in depth guide for how to get into professional wrestling (as a fan)

As a long time fan of wrestling I’ve tried to get a few people into wrestling and have found a few problems people usually have with getting into it. I’ll be breaking those down along with terms newbies might need for interacting with the fandom, it can be really intimidating to ask questions if you feel like you should know things by default so I made this

The WWE and AEW aren’t everything: there are so many companies 324 smaller North American and even some Asian companies formed independent wrestling television. You can watch more wrestling than you know what to do with. If you can’t pay the 10$ a month (absolutely no judgement like be hard) the internet is a treasure trove of free wrestling even without the ole yo ho ho. But this leads to another problem

“How will I know what I like?”: You won’t unless you’re gateway was catching wrestling while channel surfing and thinking it looked cool. Try everything once but don’t expect to like everything. Find a few indie matches before looking for anything specific so you can find a little bit of everything, you might like the showmanship, the technical details, weapon based violence, it may change with your mood but if you’re making an effort to get into it you’ll find something just take your time

“Some companies have so much history it’s overwhelming”: unless you are a devoted little lunatic don’t try to watch everything from the start, I did that with progress wrestling and I would watch 10 or so hours of wrestling, I’m still 32 shows behind and they run monthly. Almost any show from any company is a good start but I’d say allow yourself to go back like 3 shows max unless you’re already aware of where you want to start

“Things in wrestling don’t make sense”: that is true but an important thing to understand is wrestling has its own internal logic like any show really, these can vary from company to company but it’s like inertia. You start at “okay so this is happening because it’s wrestling” and you get to a point where you’re choice to suspend disbelief carries itself to “fuck it this might as well happen this is wrestling” that being said

It’s entirely valid to not enjoy something a company does and please don’t just accept something or feel like you have to wait it out. Take a break, keep an eye on it try something new but don’t feel like you have to stay glued to a bed of sand paper. You will not enjoy everything done by a company

Bring a friend and be a friend: having a friend to watch with and help you learn is always good but don’t feel like you have to share their opinion about a person or decision, any good friend will be respectful of that.

A normal wrestling match is usually won by one of 4 ways. pinning your opponent to the mat with their shoulders down for 3 seconds, submission, disqualification or knockout

Other small rules: being outside the ring means any potential victory (often aside from a ko for safety) are invalid, if a limb makes contact with the ring rope during a pinfall submission or hold it’s considered out of bounds and must be broken, if you are outside the ring there is usually a 10 count sometimes 20 if you don’t come back to the ring you get disqualified, ignoring a rope break or using an illegal move like small joint manipulation has a 5 count, don’t hit the ref, fishhook anything, bite, or hit balls. No disqualification matches exist

A tag team match: in its most basic has 2 or more teams of an equal amount, only one member of each team is allowed in the ring at once and the others have to wait on the apron, the other partner can come in when they make contact with their partner in the referees vision. A 5 count is issued for double teaming moves. Sometimes it’s everyone at once in the ring, this is a tornado tag match

Steel cage: they put a cage around the ring and you win by either normal means or depending on the match escaping the cage

lucha de apuestas: if you make any friends with any interest in lucha libre you’ll often hear this term it just means a wager match basically the competitors each put something on the line, their right to mask, their hair, a title, or their career.

Terms

Face/technico: the term used for a good guy, technico is usually reserved for Mexican lucha libre

Heel/rudo: bad guy

Over: if someone is over or getting over they’re ve a fan favorite or in the process of getting there

Heat: negative crowd response

Booking: how the show is being written and how people are being used in that process

Cultural differences in wrestling

You’d be able to find any kind of wrestling in most places if you look hard enough but it’s really interesting how different wrestling styles evolved

America: we have historically had a lot of carnival wrestling. How do you con a bunch of small towns out of money with wrestling? Fix them to be more interesting while still having enough skill to put the everyday challenges away without any suspicion. This became the rough and tumble 70s southern brawl style but until the 90s it really just boiled down to “be able to fuck people up so you don’t have to”

Japan: this is a tricky situation because there are really 3 main styles of Japanese pro wrestling. Strong style focuses on a lot of striking a resilience along with strong fundamental holds, kings road style was also very resilience based but had a more defined match structure and had a focus on throws like suplex’s and head drops. Most modern Japanese wrestling is a kind of blend of those, then you’ve got the younger brother and hardest for me to talk about bati bati. I’m admittedly not that well versed in its history but from my understanding it’s like if MMA and pro wrestling had a baby that didn’t suck. There are better resources than me to learn from.

Mexico: the origin of the highly acrobatic lucha libre actually has to do with a lot of old Mexican rings being modified boxing ring, the gymnastics of lucha are in service of minimizing bad landings. But there are 2 other important aspects to lucha, Your mask/pride and your family. In lucha your mask is your identity and your legacy, it’s essentially sacred. Losing it is often how careers end, if you’re not a mask wearing wrestler pride is the substitute. But the pride of your family is just as important as often times it’s a multi generational commitment.

Europe/the UK: I’m not slapping these together out of disrespect they’re just extremely similar historically. For a while British wrestling greatly resembled its American counterpart but too many bad actors ruined it for everyone and pro wrestling was briefly banned until being revived with a unified and more strict ruleset with world of sport in the 70s that 80s, taking more after catch as catch can. Where as it’s European brother found it’s stride in long grueling tournaments as a test of skill, a tradition still carried on mostly in Germany with WXWs 16 karat tournament, progress’s super strong style 16, and even the wwe uk title tournament

Soso cool I love listening to music let me give you my list of top four bands.

1. Of Monsters and Men- they’re my FAVORITE EVER BAND they do Icelandic indie folk/rock music, one of their songs (Little Talks) was SUPER FUCKING POPULAR back in like, 2011.

2. The Crane Wives- another one rock/folk band. If you’ve listened to The Oh Hellos, their music has a similar vibe but like, angry.

3. The Oh Hellos- you’ll never believe this, MORE folk/indie. All their music has Christian undertones, but in such a way that it RECOGNIZES how fucked Christianity has gotten so give it a shot.

4. Florence + The Machine- it’s indie rock/indie pop, makes me feel like I’m lost in the woods or floating through space, I love it.

Look, I had weeks to go until graduation. I had a life to live. I had stuff to do.

Gramps and his friends would stew and shout. Idiots on the internet would make dank memes out of Mike Kennedy and deepfake him into a million videos, turn him into a main character whose image would be around long after he left the world.

I just had to keep my head down, collect my diploma, and get the hell out of Burbank. I’d already been provisionally accepted for a Blue Helmets AmeriCorps spot down in San Juan Capistrano, helping to rebuild the city’s lower half a mile inland, up in the hills. I was going to do a year of that and then go to college: I had applications in to UCLA, Portland State (they had a really good refugee tech undergrad program), and the University of Waterloo, where my mom did her undergrad in environmental science. They’d let me declare my major in my second year, so I could take a wide variety of courses before settling on something, and if anything, Canada’s free college was even more generous than the UC system or Portland’s, with a subsidy for dorms and meals.

To tell the truth, I’d be glad to go. My senior year hadn’t been anything like I’d anticipated. Gramps’s health had gotten a lot worse the previous summer and his shitty sexist and racist remarks chased away any home help worker Burbank sent over within a week or two, so I’d been trying to keep my grades up while picking up after Gramps, getting him to take his meds, washing his sheets and cleaning his toilet—­not to mention making sure he made his doctor’s appointments and even bringing him into the office a couple of times a month for the kind of exams you couldn’t do by telemedicine.

I wasn’t sure what Gramps would do without me to take care of him, but at that point, I was running out of fucks to give. Let his asshole Maga Club buddies look after him, or maybe Gramps could figure out how not to offend everyone that came over to wipe his ass and do his laundry. He was—­as he was fond of pointing out to me—­a grown-­ass adult, and this was his house, and he was in charge. So let him be in charge.

I put myself to bed stewing about all of this, thinking of San Juan Capistrano. Some of my older friends had graduated the previous years and had gone down there and I’d followed their relocation of the old mission on their feeds. It looked like hot, sweaty, rewarding work, the kind of thing where you could really measure your progress.

For the second night in a row, I was woken up at 2 a.m. This time, it wasn’t my screen, it was Gramps, who’d stumped into my room with his cane, flipped my lights to full on, and started shaking me and calling out, “Get up, kid, get up!”

“I’m up,” I said, getting up on my elbows and squinting at him.

He was shaking, and he reeked—­of both booze and BO, and I felt a flash of guilt for not getting him in the bath that day.

“God dammit,” he said, and staggered a bit. I leapt out of bed, pulling the sheets off with me, and steadied him at the elbow.

“Calm down, okay? What’s going on? Are you all right?”

“No, I’m not all right. No one is all right. Fuck all right and fuck you.” I’d had Gramps tested for early dementia the previous year, by showing his doctor videos of moments like these. The doc had run a battery of tests before pronouncing, “Your grandfather isn’t senile, he’s just ornery.” Which was undeniable, and also pissed me the hell off. “Ornery” was a polite word for “asshole.” What the doc was telling me was that Gramps didn’t have to be cruel. He was cruel by choice.

I untangled myself from the sheets and piled them on the bed.

“What is it?”

“It’s Mike Kennedy, that asshole. Someone shot him.”

“What?”

He shoved his giant screen into my hands. I tapped the video window. It was from the POV of a car cam, that weird fish-­eye view of a self-­driving car, split-­screen with the passenger in the front seat, and it was Mike Kennedy, looking even worse than Gramps, bloodshot and trembling, with that under-­chin camera angle that makes everyone look like they’re half dead.

I tried to watch both halves. There was Kennedy, whispering something to him. There was the cul-­de-­sac he was parked in, false-­lit with IR from the cameras. The timestamp was 1:17. Less than an hour before.

Then the external image flickered for a second and resolved itself into a man, who phased in and out. He was wearing a ghillie suit like the one Kennedy had worn on the roof, covered in telltale CV dazzle stripes, designed to exploit defects in the computer vision system. You had to wear a different specific pattern for every algorithm, but if you got the right matchup, the computer would simply not see you. The man was flickering into existence when his posture crumpled up the ghillie suit and made the pattern stop working, then out again when he straightened up.

He straightened and disappeared and Mike Kennedy’s eyes widened as he noticed the man for the first time—­computer dazzle worked on computers, not humans—­and he started to say something and then a round hole appeared in his forehead, his head snapping back against the headrest, then careening forward. The flickering phantom appeared again as the man in the ghillie suit turned and disappeared.

I dropped the tablet to my bed.

“Jesus Christ, Gramps, I didn’t need to see that snuff movie—­”

He tried to smack me then. I was ready for it. I was faster. I stepped out of his reach. I was shaking too.

“You don’t get to hit me anymore old man. Never again, you hear me?”

He was purpling now, and a decade’s worth of fleeing and defusing his rages rose in me, made me want to apologize. After all, I rationalized, he’d just seen a friend murdered.

But I’d seen that friend murdered too, videobombed with a snuff flick at 2 a.m. without warning or consent. It was a traumatizing, selfish, asshole move. I’d be watching that movie on the backs of my eyelids for years to come. And the friend who’d died? He’d been ready to kill me. Gramps had no right. He was a grown-­ass adult. He had no right.

“Listen to me, you little shit, you think you can live under my roof, take my charity, and talk to me like that? Now? With all the shit that I’m going through? No sir. No. Get out, you little bastard, get out now. Get out before I kick your goddamned teeth in.” He was vibrating with rage now, literally, actually shaking so hard his wispy hair swished back and forth across his forehead.

I didn’t say another word. I picked up some jeans and a jacket, put a pair of socks in a jacket pocket, and jammed my feet into a pair of sneakers without bothering to unlace them. I shouldered past him—­still vibrating, stinking even worse—­and banged out the back door and stomped through the nighttime streets.

My feet automatically took me up to Verdugo, and then across the empty road. I turned toward school—­as I did every morning—­and autopiloted in that direction. By the time I reached the Verdugo Aquatic Facility I had calmed down enough to realize that there was no reason to go to school at two thirty in the morning, so I stopped and headed for the playground in the park behind the pool. I sat down on a bench and kicked my shoes off and shook out the playground sand, pulled out my socks and put them on, then put my shoes back on properly. I was still furious, but now I could think straight and my hands weren’t shaking. Gramps and I hadn’t had a blowup like that in years, mostly—­ okay, entirely—­because I’d backed down every time we’d been headed in that direction. I wasn’t in any mood to back down. Not ever, to be fully honest.

day 2 BREW okkkk lemme break down this one here, this is the FIRST EVER TIME I DREW PRESTER, AND I LIKE IT GRGRGRGR also theres a lot too look at kinda (everything is hard to see unless u zoom in IF you have shit eye sight like me :3) sooo lets point out details! bottom right is @creator-indy gushing over prester, on the far left is me, drooling over prester (cuz dilf) theres an advocate in the bg just flying bros damaged, theres a toon in the cauldron w/ paces glasses (fucking hate that guy) theres a low baller in there (o7) and a few rats, also the "stick" is a stick and totallyyy not a toon's arm!

HI! first off I love all the Trolls aus and headcanons and stuff on ur blog. K’d like to add/share an idea if that’s cool!

ok basically, viva-centric au/storyline where she goes on a cross-kingdom journey due to multiple factors, and during it she visits each tribe/kingdom and learns something new about music and life. she comes out of the experience with a new genre: Indie-Pop.

The reason for her journey can be boiled down to 3 main reasons:

1. She wants to see the world that she’s missed out on, since the putt-putt territory was pretty small if you’re living only there forever, and despite her trauma Viva strikes me as naturally adventurous.

2. Viva (along with the other putt-putts) has becomed disillusioned and almost disconnected with modern Pop music. They start re-Intergrating with pop village, and don’t get Viva wrong, their music is great and fun!! …but, it doesn’t feel great like it used to. When she was a kit, before everything, it was the best sound ever. It’s still good now, yeah, but the emotions it shows don’t reflect hers; even when she is happy, pop’s version of happy and her version of happy are, like, totally different.

3. She’s having an identity/mental crisis. Yeah she isn’t doing good. She can’t lean on “Queen viva, leader and protector of the putt-putt trolls, princess of a thousand enemies/ref” (off topic and definitely projection but I think viva is very rabbit-core. Think Watership Down’s philosophy) anymore as her identity, and when you spent you formative years in perpetual survival mode? Yeah. Also I think being around her dad would be hard cuz of. Yk. But idk lol

but uhhh yeah! Indie Pop Viva,,, (also, Viva la Vida is actually indie/alternative pop I think)

This is actually really interesting. I headcanon that trolls have something called "Genre identity" and it can get muddled through experiences. Char in the burning branches au, is my prime example of this as he completely abandoned his bio genre of music. And while personally I can't see Viva ever leaving the golf course, I do think it is possible the puttputts might have wandered a bit before finding the course, maybe running into the more nomatic sub tribes. was so certain i made a post about this ages ago and then found it but the info is so outdated it’s not even worth it to link so i just wasted an hour looking for a post i don’t even wanna reference anymore. ill just yap here JSVEJEN

their fandom is called trixx !! one of the few things i kept during the rebrand dhedhs and it doesn’t really have an in depth meaning like the group name tbh i just like the way it looks and sounds. its completely fanmade too and the girls liked the way it sounds so it stuck. still working on indie fandom names so you’ll have to get back to me on that one lmfao

if i had to give you a ref fandom to compare trixx (trixxes? x alr makes it plural um…) to i’d definitely say atinys for sure if you’re just starting to get into hjx. and it works bc they’re already sibling fandoms. 🙂‍↕️ you have yumis that are very reminiscent of woosan stans, seonghwa and ahyeon being called mother, jongho and eunji both going viral for doing weird talents while singing, and yuina and wooyoung friendship. somebody pray for hongjoong and ahyeon.

as mentioned in the duos fan video though yumis do have a reputation 💀 they’re kind of insane! the average tweet to break into local territory is seven out of ten times written by a yumi. and when you breach the part of the fandom that’s kind of insane… i fear i have to compare them to nctzens. the guillotine tweet was ghost written by a yumi. trixx after hours type shit

most trixx are usually ot4 ! their solo stans are a small minority i would say. if i had to rank solo fandoms from most to least confrontational it would be: 1. micha, 2. everyone else. because micha’s (onscreen, at least) personality comes off as very blunt and unfriendly and so her fans have gained a reputation for defending 😭 no hating to the point of massive hate trains bc no matter the issue micha has the talent to backup her ‘attitude’ and a micha fan will be very quick to show and tell you as much. but it won’t stop a hater from making a snide comment about anything else. giving very much ‘can your fave back up the shit you’re talking cause mine can.’ and will! my favorite industry baby iktr

now ktrixx vs itrixx…….. i’d have to say itrixx definitely treat them a bit better when they promote overseas. in my previous post about the fandom i said ktrixx have a reputation for setting records of album wastage and i might have to scrap that 💀 ktrixx stream! just not as much as itrixx. the average itrixx definitely spends more than the average ktrixx.

and as for those kind of fans… every group has their weird batch of people who are intrusive as all hell but they’ve only had some odd incidents here and there. definitely not as bad as like… stalking and harassing family but they’ve had numbers leaked. mostly bc the girls (mainly ahyeon and micha) do not play about their private information and will go to extreme lengths 🤷🏽‍♀️ they do not know you like that you will be slammed with a lawsuit. they do not know you! 🫵🏽

long story short: most trixx are respectful and the fandom is pretty chill. become one today by indoctrination and sweet treats <3
