Hi Li! I've been trying to make sure my portfolio is strong enough for a studio or contract position. I usually lean toward character design and storyboards but I'd like to start incorporating background design as well. Do you have any tips on what to include for that?

Hello! Unfortunately, I'm not a background designer so I wouldn't know where to start with that. ^^; But! My suggestion would be to study industry professionals who mainly focus on background design and reviewed their website, tumblr, instagram, etc. Sometimes the best way to learn is to look at other people's work. Sorry I can't be much of help since BG design is not my forte but I hope researching professional BG artists helps!

LMK fic au idea

Welp im not good writing fic and my ideas are riots

@quitealotofsodapop and I made an au about the Monkey King's children: Paramita, Sun Luzhen, Yuebei Xing, Jidu and Luohou.

This happens once Wukong finishes his journey and returns home, helping with the reconstruction of the island, mainly because he starts to feel lonely especially for what happened with his partner Macaque. And one of the things he always wanted once the war was over is to be able to have a family with his beloved but this couldn't happen so he will do it with his own hands in the style of Nuwa, he would create clay eggs and even find a hidden one and from there his children would be born.

Paramita is the firstborn and heir to the throne of the kingdom of the mountain of fruits and flowers and Alolai being the serious of all his brothers and the most elegant of them, he has an elegance that his father lacks but that will not make him less lethal on the battlefield; he is the general of the kingdom's army and has on his shoulders the expectations of the kingdom as crown prince.

Sun Luzhen in his canon is Wukong's twin brother who had taken so long to hatch, and the second to be born when he was found, the king had adopted him as his own son, He has an energetic personality like a showman, He is now a version of Porty light, he is a professional musician and has worked in various musical genres, even in large industries making soundtracks for various movies or video games under an alias.

Yuebei Xing, the only daughter of the monkey king, is daddy's little princess, with a tough character and a very bad temper, with an enormous and muscular build that makes her completely intimidating, but under the dark shell she is a monkey who loves her family and her brothers, she was born with a cleft lip of which she only has a scar, she is a renowned paleontologist in her field who loves her job, she has always loved digging up bones since she was little.

Jidu and Luohou they are mischievous twins who like to cause trouble like their older brother Luzhen, who love theater like Macaque and dedicate their life to that art. Jidu is a comedian in various stand-up comedy shows while Luohou is an actor in musicals and has participated in many.

Wukong wanted to experience the possibility of having children by modeling in clay that he created 4 eggs, by the time he found the stone egg of Luzhen he found that the Paramita egg had already hatched and in time only the eggs of the others would hatch turning Wukong into a tired father of 5 energetic children.

Rumors of his existence abounded, especially the fact that Paramita was the son of Princess Iron Fan, which was never lacking (Paramita could never find the author of that aberration in the book and if he had, he would have pulverized it). This rumor was born because he and Red Son WERE childhood friends and a possible marriage union between them was expected (Like Odette and Derek in The Swan Princess). Now their parents wanted them to marry for love like they did, but then the thing at the mountain happened and they lost contact.

Paramita as a cub: "This is my best friend Red. When we grow up, we'll get married and have an island to ourselves!" :3

But that is if the day they meet again they shout with joy and hug each other like little kids who haven't seen each other all summer.

The rumors of the monkey king's children grew to be illustrated in the non-canonical sequels of the journey to the west and at that time they were just children, but due to the isolation of the monkey king the rumors of them became a myth until their existence was doubted, making the shadow of his father grow…

MK would meet the children of the monkey king in ''A hero is born'' is when he lands on the beach of Huaguoshan Island and they were the monkeys in disguise (Headcanon the common monkeys are glamours of yao monkeys)

Making them lose their glamour and scare MK even more until Paramita has to take control of the situation by lining everyone up.

After the initial scare MK asks them to take him to the monkey king and leave them alone; Now you might be wondering why the monkey king would need a successor? Simple, because Wukong has empty nest syndrome.

For the events of season two Paramita and his brothers will be in charge of MK's training so he wouldn't be so far behind and if they would be aware of LBD.

When MKang finds out about their existence it will be at the end of this same season especially when Pigsy is yelling at Wukong and oh boy, if there is something that Paramita does NOT tolerate at all is that HIS FATHER IS INSULTED (He's a daddy's boy)

Pigsy: You're supposed to be his mentor! Paramita: "Excusr me!? He raised five children as a single parent!" HE IS ANYTHING BUT A LAZY MAN WHO DOES NOTHING, DAMN SERVANT!!!

Paramita was millimeters away from beating Pigsy up, he will defend his father's honor knowing how introverted he is and will let that insult pass (He will fight even in mud to prove his point), his brothers would be pulling him to avoid the chef's announced death, even Yuebei has a hard time doing it being the strongest of all her brothers.

Not a lot of variety in Hazbin Hotel

Another thing I dislike about Hazbin Hotel is the genuine lack of diversity.

With a setting like Hell you have the amazing opportunity to have characters from so many different time periods interact. With different fashion, different skills, different believes or upbringings it's incredibly easy to make characters that stand apart from eachother and create conflict (atleast it should be).

But with Vivzepops disinterest in making characters that even slightly stray away from the specific way she likes to write them, a lot of them end up blending together in how they act/look. Hazbin Hotel has this pretended diversity, where it seems like the cast should vary because on the surface they are very different, but in the show they blend together. This is because Vivzepop throws around different jobs, sexualities, nationalities, goals and inspirations for her characters, but never puts in the work to make them feel like it.

Sir Pentious, Alastor and Vox are all from different times, with different occupations. Sir Pentious was an inventor in the 1880s, Alastor was a radio host from the 1930s and Vox was a TV show host from 1950 (that's the era they died in). Yet they all wear very similar suits, just colour shifted. They all have shoulder pads, the same lapels, stripes and bowties. Alastor and Vox even wear the same pants and have the same shoes (atleast in shape).

Not to mention that in almost all of the designs there's that obnoxious red colour (especially with the red-black-white combination she just loves to put on her creations).

Even characters like Vox who seem like they have different colours (for him a mostly blue colour sceme) still have red accents and only very few characters are allowed designs without any red. Which is not that great since the background is also mostly red and it just hurts to look at sometimes.

Theres also all of the "typical" Vivzepop desing traits. Mostly sharp shapes and features, very slim bodies, sharp teeth, tophats, suits etc. A lot of her characters already blend together even though it doesnt make sense for them to. Would an inventor from the 1880s really dress the same as a TV show host from the 1950s?

Here I should mention that I don't mean blend together as in being completely indistinguishable from eachother but rather having too many similarities that it doesn't make sense for them to have.

As far as personality goes I do have to say that the characters are different enough in their basic chatacterizations. Vaggie especially was mostly refreshing because she acted as a voice of reason sort of and Charlie with her often naive (but very childish) attitude also stood out. But the devil is usually in the details.

I've heard people complain countless times about how pretty much the only continuous joke the show has is a character cursing, insulting others or making a sex joke. I get that cynical characters are sort of the appeal of HH but there's also just a lack of variety there for me. This is probably just a small nitpick here and something that is already done sometimes in the show, but there are different ways a person can be insulting and mean.

Like, for Husk it makes sense to be so up-front with being rude. He's a bartender and dealing with drunk people often requires being very clear and assertive.

But why does Angel never get to do anything else then directly talking about being sexy and making fun of others in such an obvious way. I think they wanted to give the appeal of him reading someone like a drag queen would but he just makes the same observations again and again and not in really clever ways (from what I remember!).

Alastor and Vox could've also been used better in the sense that atleast from what I know people in the entertainment industry (especially ones who do interviews or that stuff) won't directly tell someone that they don't like them. It's much more common for them to bring it up in small ways, like asking a question tied to an embarrassing topic to force the person into having to talk about that stuff.

Like I said this isn't really all too important though. What makes me more annoyed is the lack of diversity when it comes to the villains and how they're treated.

To me Viv has an issue with trying for every villain to play a more goofy role even though it doesn't always fit. Of course you can have "stupid" or silly and mostly funny villains but that shouldn't be every single one. When there are multiple villains in a show what makes them interesting is often how they differ from the others in their attitude and motivation and in HH we just don't really get that.

Sir pentious is never taken seriously as a threat and is mostly treated as incompetend, (I know he gets out of being the villain rather quick but even before that) Adam is just constantly portrayed as a dumb and irrational until we are supposed to take him seriously in the end. Vox doesn't do anything in the show apart from be kinda antagonistic towards Alastor and outside of that he is mainly also presented as being a fun villain rather than an intimidating one (very prominently in the song he has with Alastor where Alastor just completely bashes him at the end). Velvette also has nothing to do. Lucifer isn't treated as an antagonist (even though he should be in my opinion) and is shown to be just a "goofy and silly little guy" ig.

And apart from Valentino's genuinely terrifing scene he has with Angel Dust in episode four, he too is shown to be whiny, obnoxious and mostly dumb in his other scenes (this isn't helped by Viv pushing the idea that the Vee's are just like fun little saturday morning cartoon villains outside of the show). I guess Alastor is different in that regard kinda.

This plus the fact that outside of the characters who are obviously villains no one is allowed to be even slightly critical of Charlies idea without being presented as totally irrational, makes for no variety when it comes to the opposition in Hazbin Hotel. It's just kinda dissapointing to me that a show with this opportunity to create different characters gets stuck in the same conflicts and ideas over and over again.

Section II: The Society of Men

If a man were secluded in nature, and he had to supply himself with his own wants, there would certainly be a struggle with the elements. If he were to be a hunter gatherer, the chance of coming across food would vary, with the conditions hindering or helping. If in winter, the chances of finding edible plants will be unlikely, but by following herds, he would be led to warmer climates. The availability of animals would be higher in summer, where those whom naturally hibernate are awake. If this man in nature were to be a farmer, cultivating and harvesting the land, it would be long and hard work. Typically, he would be employed through most of the day. His chances of survival, though, would probably be improved. Since he would not have to travel to unfamiliar, possibly dangerous lands in pursuit of his food source, he would be exempt from those injuries which occur to travelers. Still, the chance of death is a possibility. If a bad winter were to hit him, or if he were to plant his crops prematurely, or if he were to harvest them too late or too soon, or if some natural occurrence were to plague him, then he would die from starvation. This is one man, though, secluded in nature.

Here we see the basic premises of economics: (1) the man follows his self-interests, (2) the man follows these interests rationally. For the first premise, in either case of being a hunter gatherer or a farmer, the man was attempting to suffice to his own need of food, an impulse which is not foreign to any living creature. For the second premise, the man did follow his desires rationally. In the case of being a hunter gatherer, he sought out food. He was actively attempting to satisfy his desires. When he decided to upgrade his condition to that of a farmer, his security increased, though possibly sacrificed with an increase of labor. In this scenario, how the man responded to these interests, and in what manner, has be regarded by authors as Domestic Economy. By placing man in society, where he exchanges the fruit of his production, where mutual agreements take place, we come to the study of Political Economy, or Economics. By understanding a person’s conditions, and their interests and their rational responses to these interests in their present conditions, we can theorize on how people will react in similar conditions and in the future.

In a society of men, each person gains something — or so, it is believed in industrial society. The general premise is that, by working together, two men will produce more, than had they worked apart. This can be seen in countless examples. Take three men, for example. Ask each of them to deseed cotton. Now, ask the first to be a lumberjack to cut down trees, ask the second to fashion the wood into a cotton gin, and ask the third to operate that cotton gin. The combination and cooperation of their efforts will yield a produce that is at least fifty times what they would have yielded if they had labored separately and without each other’s aid. In society, then, we have a higher rate of production. However, in a society, there are countless other things to be taken into consideration, such things which have been subject to examination and hypothesis in Economics.

The first time Aza went to a grocery store was in Olinfa with Keearo's family, and it was overwhelming. The signs didn't make any sense, she'd never seen some of these fruits before, and they just walked through it like it was nothing??? But she's better with it now. The stores mostly have seasonal local produce, and she has a better handle on which things she likes. There's a honeydew-like melon that appears in the summer that she will always always buy and then slice very thinly so it sort of melts in her mouth.

The first time Sheri went to a grocery store was in Vascoma, and of course he went to the biggest one he could possibly find, which meant that when he stepped in it felt shockingly like being toted around for a public appearance—too many people, too many lights, and the strong desire to just go back to his room. This particular store does a thing where the produce is arranged by color. It's supposed to be a reference to the fabric culture/industry of Vascoma, but in Sheri's opinion it doesn't actually help him find anything, especially when so many things are green??? But he's become enamored of a flat pod fruit that has the same issue as pomegranates (too full of seeds) but is so delicious he'll deseed the damn thing himself.

One year had passed and there's still no news from the whereabout of her siblings and their friends,even she didn't know where her parents are and she try everything to make any contact with them or anyone from Floworld but it only end in failure.She wishes that her powers weren't that undeveloped.She couldn't even make a portal that didn't last for 5 seconds before closing up.

For once in her life she felt lonely and wish they were people around her instead of what she always thought she wanted..peace and calmness.

With a sigh she went to the center of the Spacetime Hotel maybe dancing a little bit would make her feel better that's what her family usually do when they want to express what they feel,that's what a coach do and someone that is a deity and a princess she should know that better.

Little constellations starts to dance around her forming her family.A small sad smile appearing in her face while seeing the constellations.She missed them,the song was nearly ending,seeing her family drawn in the constellations made her feel bad,alone but also strong,or feeling strong she could feel her flow going through her veins,She shouldn't be stuck in there she needs to find them!.

The song was ending,the constellations come near her while trying to hug her.She close her eyes and with her hands she form a triangle,the symbol of her family.She felt better and with new motivation to search for them.

Once she opened her eyes but she found herself surprise as a portal appear in front of her.

At the other side she could distinguish what she could guess was a dark industrial base with factories and buildings having a strange desing that most kids will be terrified to look at.Everything was dark,gothic to describe it.She read from the books of her father library a danceverse that was like this:Eternyx.

In the middle she sees a coach with red hair and green eyes already having his fists up to start a fight.She knows him that was one of her sibling friends!What was his name?Jack Rose maybe?she had heard a lot of times that name from his brother mouth.He seems kind of lonely too?Where were his friends and why he look exhausted?

Certainly he know something and she will get to know about it too.

so . emalfs canon desing has piercings, right? he has like .. his ears, horns and tail pierced? and his tongue..? *went to check if I was right* yEA, he does, also his wings

based on that, i want to talk abt the flame trio and piercings

first .. i want to question why emalf has piercings in his horns?? ik other demons have it to but.. ahm.. arent horns bones? or at least something like that. I've seen people cut sheeps horns when they grow too much in dangerous places so probably doesn't hurt as much as.. piercing a bone. but still, the logistics behind it are kinda funny? like, do demons piercer shops have drills to drill into the horns? funa probably didn't think too much abt it and honestly? fair. it looks cool, thats a fact. but the thought of going to a place where they do piercings and instead of a needle they bring out a drill. its kinda funny.

also.. does piercings wings affect your flying capability? probably not much, i mean, you can still talk with a tongue piercing so why yk. but still, i like to think abt the healing process, like how you probably would be advised not to fly for some time, because if you fly the piercing will move and it'll be more difficult for it to heal, stuff like that

those are just some thoughts.. but now the most important part!

The Headcanons

Emalf already has a lot of piercings, most in places where.. people don't really have (eg. wings, horns, tail), and the places that people can pierce I'd say he's actually lacking. I mean, ears and tongue are not enough piercings for him.

Saying that, I think Emalf has an eyebrow piercing, some sort of nose piercing and a bridge piercing.

The eyebrow one seems very clear to me, it would fit his aesthetic perfectly, I don't know why he doesn't have one already. Hell, maybe both his eyebrows are pierced, I don't doubt it.

To Emalf, piercings are like hair dye. Oof, mental breakdown? Gotta do another piercing, I'll book an appointment for this morning. (It's currently four in the morning) That's why he has so many.

He pierced his own ear alone when he was like, 13, with a earing he wanted to wear. It ended up crooked and he asked Adauchi to help him with the other side. It still ended up crooked. He still wears the same earring since then.

After that he started going to a professional.

He needed permission from an adult because he was underage and the shop wouldn't pierce him because of it. Adauchi helped, forging Ivlis signature on the document, something he learned very early in life.

The first ones where ear piercings, including a industrial. After that, he pierced his septum, his eyebrows, his bridge, the tongue was the last one on his face. After that, he started piercing his demonic characteristics.

You may wonder.. Why does Emalf have a bridge piercing? He wears shades all the time. To that I say.. He spent way too much time and effort to find the perfect match of jewlery and glasses that wouldn't clash. Also probably more money than anyone should.

He and Poemi bought a pair of earrings and they each wear one, in the same ear. It was Poemis idea of course, but Emalf got more exited than her, he makes an effort to never let his hair hide it.

He does wear it on the side that Adauchi helped him with (Haha angst)

Poemi grew up watching Emalf get a million piercings, always thinking it was sooooo cool. You get to have jewelry on your whole body?? You get to have sparkle thingies on your face?? She always wanted one, or many. She wanted many.

Yes Poemi is very interested in shiny objects, much like a dragon. She's generally very dragon-like.

She'd never tell Emalf she liked his piercings tho. When Emalf promted her with the question, 7 year old Poemi said that so much gold on his face was to make up to the fact that he was ugly without it. The brutality of it was supposed to distract Emalf, so she would not have to tell him that she liked it.

It did work. Emalf was distracted enough.

Why didn't Poemi wanted to admit liking Emalfs piercings? Not give him the satisfaction. She's petty like that, always has been.

However. She did compliment Adauchis piercings, she said it made him look cool. Which was true. It did make him look cool. She'd never let Emalf discover that.

It was like Adauchi and Poemi little secret.. One of many. She loved sharing her secrets with him. Including how much she wanted to have her own piercings.

Before leaving, Adauchi helped Poemi pierce her ears also. Apparently, he's been training because this time it didn't end up crooked. She was so exited he had to stop multiple times during the process because she would move.

She spent the whole week bragging about her brother piercing her ears, to literally everyone she could.

She was unbelievably happy when she showed her father the earrings, because he told her they looked pretty. Then she bragged about her father liking her earrings for one week more.

Even when having her own earings, Poemi would continue to make fun of Emalf for his.

That's why, when older Poemi mentioned she wanted to do more, Emalf was as confused as ever.

She had to finally admit that she thought it was cool. But in her own way, which is.. A bit condescending.

"Did you really believed what a 7 year old told you? Of course they're cool, dumbass."

Emalf was more than happy to take her to get more piercings, but he didn't let her do a lot of the ones she wanted. They were there without her father knowing, after all. Emalf didn't really want to make the Devil mad by taking his teen daughter to pierce her body.

She was very dramatic about it but settled for more ear piercings.

What Emalf didn't expect was Poemi finding someone to do her piercings without permission from a adult. When she came back one night with her wings, tail and bellybutton pierced he panicked.

Her father didn't care enough, really. At that time he had stopped paying attention to her due to his job as a Devil. Which was only a excuse for Poemi to do more piercings.. and tattoos.

Poemi has more tattoos than someone her age should.

That is. Any tattoos at all.

She's terrible with healing. When they told her not to fly, she did. When they told her to wash it, she didn't. Somehow, nobody really knows, she's never got an infection.

She has a tendency to fidget with the rings on her tail. She keeps rolling them around when she's bored.

Poemi has a jewelry collection for the piercings she has. She likes to change it for every outfit and coordinate everything. It's surprisingly organized. Most of it is gold but she also owns silver, rose gold and random colors and shapes for some.

Adauchi got me thinking a bit more, I think he'd get his first piercing while helping Emalf falsify documents. Like, he'd falsify his dads signature for both of them, and they'd get their their piercings together. On the same spot. Because that's what bros do.

It'd be a helix or something, probably. Maybe two.

Funnily enough, both Adauchi and Poemi simply don't care about being caught by their father. Adauchi wouldn't actively tell him but he wouldn't hide it either, he just doesn't give a single shit about his father finding out.

And as always, he never noticed.

All of his piercings, at least from before he left the Flame World, he did with Emalf. Since he was always going, it was just easier. Plus he could make fun of Emalf of being scared, light-heartedly, of course.

He did hold his hand when he asked, so .

Different from Emalf and Poemi, all of Adauchis piercings are silver in color, not gold. He likes being a little more discrete, even if he still wears gold sometimes.. Just not on his face.

Before leaving, Adauchi pierced most of his ears and a bit of his tail, not being able to pierce his wings and horns because.. He doesn't have any. (Do we know why yet..?)

After leaving, the first piercing he decided to do was snake bites. Why? It just fits him perfectly.

It took a long time for him to actually do it, like years. His head was thinking about more important things.

But when he decided to do it, it was a bit bittersweet. He remembered Emalf, since they always went to get piercings together, and wished he could be there again. After that one he really didn't feel like doing another, it wasn't the same anymore.

Doesn't have as many piercings as Emalf and Poemi, could possibly have had more if he stayed. (Emalf really is the piercing influencer, everyone in a radius of him gets the urge to put metal on their bodies)

Out of the three, is the one with better hygiene in regards to the piercings. Part of the reason he doesn't want anymore is because he really doesn't like cleaning all of it.

At some point in time he lost a piece of jewelry and let the thing close, he just didn't care enough.
