I'm all for being the change you wanna see in the world. But damn, like, please also cross-reference that lifestyle with the world you actually live in before you make drastic choices.
I have acquaintances, here in my major-but-not-capital city in my American central-western state, that strongly believe that a sustainable future relies on car-free communities. I don't disagree. Especially considering our city is one of the least-walkable cities in the country - we're sprawling, our public transit system is so laughably horrible it's actually an embarrassment, and many of our major thoroughfares don't have bike lanes and/or sidewalks - we definitely would benefit from a sea change in how we view walkability and transportation.
My acquaintances believe in this so strongly, they've sold their car. They commute, run errands, and do their kid'a school drop-off and pick-up solely on bicycles.
Fine. Your life, your choice.
Except now one of them needs to be in the Major Capital City tomorrow (a Saturday) at 4pm. Major Capital City is 70 mins by highway @ 75mph north of us.
As mentioned, we do not have adequate public transport. There are two public/private options between here and there, both of them are busses that sell out quickly on weekends. One of them goes only to the airport. And she does not have a car anymore. So her options at the moment are catching the 5:30am bus and carrying an overnight bag with her for twelve hours, or paying close to $100usd for an Uber.
So now she's all up in my feed literally begging for a ride, and receiving basically zero sympathy nor offers of assistance. She's getting all mad and ranting in ALL CAPS COMMENTS on her own post about the state of our transit system. (Because that'll fix it.) She isn't actually blaming anyone for not helping her, but that is clearly an unspoken factor in her frustration level.
I am so baffled and bemused.
Because ummm, you did this to yourself? You're the one who knew the state of the transit system when you made the transportation decisions for your family? You're the one who sold your vehicle as a way of sending a message about your morals and ethics, which is roughly equivalent to gluing yourself to a Starbucks countertop, and now you're mad that you're facing consequences for that decision?
FAAFO, babes.
Look, I want a post-scarcity utopia as much as the next fool, but I'm also aware that nobody gives a dry rat shit about my individual choices. Because they only impact me. If I don't have a car or if I recycle or if I compost or if I only eat organic free-range meat once per week, it won't make a modicum of difference to my community. Me making the choice to recycle isn't going to slow down wasteful corporate manufacturing practices. My compost isn't gonna save the entire planet or even my own neighborhood from being ravaged by climate change. My careful and narrow meat consumption choices will not make a dent in the profitable ubiquity of inhumane factory farming. My choice not to have a car will not be the catalyst for my local governmental officials finally taking public transit seriously. The little individual choices we make might improve your individual life, but do not and will not impact the world around us in measurable ways.
And its pretty staggeringly arrogant to assume you're so important that your choices will be different.

Well the amazing news about wicked is that if you want to love it it’s genuinely objectively good enough that you can love it and if you want to hate it it’s genuinely objectively bad enough that you can hate it. This one’s gonna be crazy for the discourse machine and everyone wins

I love prophecies and the battle of Bond of Choice versus Bond of Obligation.
#my thought process while I was drawing this: ->#The lamb & Narinder have a pre-designed bond as well as one of their choice. The pre-designed one binds them individually while the bond of#-Choice binds them as a Unit. Narinder's 'strings are constricting. He's literally chained by them. The Lamb's are looser but still binding#Also they're actually looking at each other here!!#anyway i hope you like the piece and the rant! i love thinking and giving the characters meaning and symbolism. its like playing with dolls#also the strings--im hoping--theyre sort of emulating narinder's chains in his domain. the ones hanging around#K thats it for now#Narinder#The Lamb#narilamb#the one who waits#OH WAIT. ''the morning light, when it comes to me, it was there but I could not see''
Arthur’s life was profoundly shaped by his self-hatred, lack of self-worth and disbelief in the existence of kindness in a seemingly dark and cruel world.
I strongly disagree with the statement that Arthur only became a ‘’better’’ man after being diagnosed with tb. His struggle with his true/inner self is apparent as early as chapter one. ‘’You are not who you think you are, sir… which is lucky’’
He has lived a rough life, raised by criminals and surrounded by violence ever since he was born. It was installed in him early that his value lied within being a violent enforcer and he has lived this life since, knowing nothing else. As a highly aware person, Arthur's actions weight heavy on his soul. He accepts that his actions have consequences. He knows that a person who has caused so much suffering is not meant to have happiness in life. His way of life has caused him to believe that he is not worthy of love or redemption. He doesn’t want to believe that a person like him could be capable of any good. (a thing to note here is that imo, Arthur’s actions near his death weren’t attempts at redemption but rather a strong desire to do right and possibly be his true self.) This is why he keeps living as he does as it’s the only thing he’s ever known, it’s the thing that brings him profit, praise from the person he looks up to and he is already damned so he might as well continue living this life anyway.
The internal problem Arthur faces is that this violent, cruel way of life doesn’t align with what I’d call his true self/ideals. He is torn between the harsh reality he has known and an unconscious yearning for righteousness/love. To be able to carry on with his actions he must enforce certain ideals within himself, such as: I am bad, ugly, nasty, ignorant, mean etc. He also decides to see the dark side of reality, telling himself that the world is a grim dark place and this is just as things were meant to be. This is why he feels so uncomfortable being complimented for his good deeds, because a bad rotten person like him should not be able to do good. It breaks the image he has built for himself and he doesn’t want that happening. This can be seen a lot during the ‘’Money Lending and Other Sins’’ missions where he is unusually mean (even for his standards) to each of the debtors. Imo, he acts this way because he must truly convince himself of being a terrible man to be able to carry out a job which revolts him so badly. In the last debt collecting mission with J. John Weathers, it can be seen in his face/expressions how much he is struggling to put on a tough, uncaring, heartless act. He needs to maintain a ruthless persona to survive in the world he knows. He must convince himself of his own cruelty.
''Forgive me, but that's the problem. You don't know you.''
Contrary to Arthur’s beliefs, he is a naturally kind-hearted person who is unconsciously drawn towards kindness. And yes, even before he was diagnosed with tb. This can be seen in the people he respects the most and, in his willingness to help strangers (notice how he often does unnecessary acts of service for total strangers such as: carrying their things, holding out hands etc. even though they had already troubled him). Despite the life he has lived, Arthur does not enjoy violence, he does not enjoy hurting people. He doesn’t want to dominate over others. He thinks mostly about others and not about himself. This fact alone is very telling of his character.
He writes about Charles, a man who he truly respects: ‘’He’s a better man than me. He does not need to think to be good. It comes naturally to him, like right is deep within as opposed to this conflict between GOOD↔EVIL that rages within me.’’ A man who is not struggling with his inner self would not have written this. To me this clearly implies an inner desire to be a better man. He writes about his mentors: ‘’I love Dutch like a father, but in many ways, I love Hosea even more. He’s kind and fair and like a human being. Dutch is something else.’’ Clearly showing a preference for Hosea who is of a more gentle nature and shows genuine kindness. Unsurprisingly, these are the people who see through his dumb/though act and encourage him to drop it.
When he comes across Brother Dorkins for the first time, he writes: ‘’(he)was one of those innocent people who make you feel better about human beings and about yourself a little. Must be odd to see all that goodness in the world. Place always seemed dark and brutal to me.’’ Expressing how he does not see goodness in the world, implying lack of good examples/kindness/good experiences in his life. Yet, the monk leaves an impression and imo, this encounter (seeing genuine goodness) disrupts Arthur’s perception of what the world truly is. ‘’Just as evil begat evil your whole life long, so good may begat good’’ (what strengthens my belief in this, is the following, symbolic scene of Arthur realising the consequences of his actions right after picking up a crucifix. He was aware of them before sure, but is unable to truly ignore them now having seen it right in front of his eyes). If only Arthur was presented with more examples of goodness in his life.
''You have it in you... I can tell!''
His desire to do as much good as possible after realising he won’t live long is instant. This would not be the mindset of someone who did not already possess kindness in his heart. ‘’Know glory and forget about shame.’’ Arthur’s shame and self-loathing caused by his previous actions were what was holding him back from allowing kindness into his life. Knowing that he has limited time left has not made him into someone he wasn’t before. The diagnosis was a catalyst, allowing him to embrace that love/goodness truly does exist and accelerate the process of chipping away from the persona he has made for himself. This was a newfound understanding for him as in the past he was rejecting any notion of kindess. In himself and perhaps the whole existence of it. ‘’You keep hidden all that matters, even from yourself.’’
After being diagnosed, he writes: ‘’What kind of a man have I been? What kind of a man am I? What world is this we live in? A land of fury or a place of love? Am I being prepared for eternal damnation? Am I past any kind of saving? Is that all fairytales? Man ain’t got much good in him. I ain’t got no good in me… I don’t think and yet I see goodness. I see it. If not in me, in good folk. In Abigail and her love for Jack. In that silly monk. In Downes, I guess. Begging not for himself but for the poor, even though he was near starving himself. Maybe I don’t want salvation. Part of me has always longed for death.’’ This entry perfectly shows how deep Arthur’s self-loathing goes and just how much it has damaged him. As his journal allows a look into his true feelings, he truly does not see a single good thing about himself. He knew for a long time that the way he lives is detestable but he could not let go of it. Not because he didn’t want to, but because it’s all that he has ever known. He didn’t believe in anything else. This sudden acceptance of goodness has allowed him to see clearly, which was obscured from him before, and for the first time, enabled him to act free of past regrets for what is right.

Arthur’s redemption is not about becoming a good man. It is about finding the strength to change and recognise your true self despite a lifetime of self-loathing and breaking free from destructive beliefs of the past.
In Arthurian legends a stag is a symbol of the unending quest of spiritual knowledge/enligtenment

Day 2: Timeloop / Xiao Qi and Jiu Ge
I am cringe and I am not even free
Feel free to reuse this idea but 24 hours are not enough for me to finish an entire comic. I could have taken the simpler prompt but nOOOOOO timeloop is too tempting. Past me why are we like this
#svsss#shen jiu#yue qingyuan#qijiu#qijiuweek2024#the basic idea for this was that both yqy and sj remember each loop#the loop started after their individual deaths in PIDW and resets them to close to disciple era#aka the time Yue Qi was in the caves and SJ presumably got away from the Qiu household or was already with Wu Yanzi#I imagine the first few loops they qi deviated so hard from the shock that they didnt even make it like 1 hour in the loop before beingrese#and then had a few loops just fucking around and finding out#eventually they realise that the other has the memories of all loops and so begins the talks and figuring how tf they can get out of this#maybe they resolve their issues with the promise or not your choice tbh#they try different plans and methods#but they keep dying (read: SJ keeps dying first and YQY either dies or sewerslides not soon after) and getting reset with no end in sight#until the last pages where the svsss timeline begins#SJ got replaced with SY and the system isn't letting YQY join him in death or smth nor letting him do anything about SY being there instead#And due to their closeness from being immensily tired from all the loops#YQY notices it immediately but can't do anything about it#the bonus for SY is that this timeline was very kind to LBH & co - 79 figured by now that keeping him in the sect and happy was their best#bet at staying alive - or well at least for longer#I'll continue this storyline in one of the future prompts of this qijiu week#btw the one with the cliff is just the whoopsie daisy timeline where SJ accidentally falls into the Abyss trying to keep LBH from falling i#79 had a bit of a good laugh about that one#cw death#cw violence#cw blood#cw angst

emily prentiss + leaving and coming back for her family
#criminal minds#criminalmindsedit#criminalmindsverse#proceduraledit#emily prentiss#emilyprentissedit#cmverseedit#tvedit#filmtvcentral#dailyflicks#femalecharacters#bitchys#mine#edit#*#category*#tag meta#forever thinking about emily prentiss as a yoyo falling away from her family and coming back when they tug#and that her motivation for back and forth is the same - it's always about what she thinks is best for her family in that moment#her choice is always to protect them and the fact that she leaves to protect them from HER? that she always sees herself as the problem??#(she ruined matthew she betrayed doyle she killed tsia)#BUT BUT BUT them needing her? hotch asking her to lead reid asking her to fight jj asking her to stay??? she always /always/ comes back#and i find it very interesting that this yoyoing usually runs parallel to her own moral reflection - she left the first time because she#both morally objected to strauss's political game and to protect the team as individuals. she came back in s7 because she wanted something#'clean.' and she considered leaving in s13 and s17 because she had broken her own moral code each time. and that's such a meaty facet#of emily as a character because her priority is ALWAYS her family and protecting them. but what that looks like changes and costs#and is never ever an easy choice for her. emily does what she needs to as a protector but she doesn't let herself off the hook. she thinks#DEEPLY about what she does and whether she's ok with her actions. which sends her toward distancing herself from her family#for their own protection (because she's the problem see above) and the whole cycle starts again!!#(someday i'll rant about how this all ties into her leaving in run - the one time it was about HER but also not - but i'm out of tag space)

The Point of no Return
Because I will never shut up about the Hardeen arc- I really need to emphasize the importance of this moment right here. When we think of the Hardeen arc, we only ever think about the aftermath, after the lie and after the pain. But I have never thought about the before. The moments right before.
Obi-Wan takes a deep breath, he brings his lightsaber to his chest and he gathers himself. He has to take a moment to think about what he's about to do.
This is a complete turn of feelings from when we see him wittingly ask how his funeral was, it's that simple and easy commentary that makes them all think this was easy for him to do. He shoves down what he's feeling right here and instead he jokes and laughs. He's fun and easy, he's funny, he's great, but he's not, he's not, he's in a lot of pain and he hurt everyone close to him in the worst way. Obi-Wan would never hurt them, but he has, and he'll never be forgiven.
He made this choice for the greater good, but the greater good is seldom so. It's in this moment we understand his full awareness of the deception he is about to undergo, how there is no forgiveness for the action he is about to commit, how after all this is over, Obi-Wan cannot expect forgiveness and understanding because this is for the greater good, this is for the Jedi and all they protect.
This isn't a choice for Obi-Wan. It is an assignment to a Jedi Master. Attachment is forbidden, become a part of the cosmic force, and the galaxy will benefit from your sacrifice. But the undercurrent of remorse is there, and all the people he left behind will never forgive Obi-Wan for dying.
So, Obi-Wan holds his lightsaber to his chest because it is his life, it's a silent goodbye to who he is because of what he is. He chooses the Jedi and that choice kills him. It's in that moment that he says goodbye to Anakin and Ahsoka, to Cody and himself. His identity, his lightsaber, are about to no longer exist. Obi-Wan would willingly sacrifice who he is for the sake of the Jedi but that doesn't mean it is easy for him to do. So he holds his lightsaber close because he's not becoming a part of the cosmic force, he's becoming something much worse.
#we see him do this so willingly#but this moment makes it clear that it's not something HE'S doing#it's his oath that binds him to do this#there is no choice for Obi-Wan#he is a Jedi so his life is never his to decide#he never had a choice#I could go ON AND ON#I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT THIS#this arc perfectly explains the title of Jedi and the individual#and shows you the cracks in Anakin and his faith in the Jedi#because Obi-Wan did this but Anakin would never be able to#star wars#clone wars#obi wan kenobi#commander cody#anakin skywalker#ahsoka tano#rako hardeen#Hardeen arc

Honestly, the biggest downfall in the writing of Hotd is that the writers seem barely aware of the actual politics behind the Dance other than the misogyny.
And even that they only touch on in the most surface level way completely divorced from the context of the actual feudal system it exists in.
#like why is Alicent a WOMAN presented as the biggest opposition to Rhaenyra#why is her failure as a parent the focus over Viserys?#why is class a nonissue on the show??!#why are Rhaenyra's political choices utterly incomprehensible??!#if I'm meant to believe she would be a more stable ruler than Aegon than why do I literally know nothing about her ruling style#she has been running Dragonstone for almost 10 years at this point but why do we know NOTHING about it???!#she might be less erratic and vile as an individual but she has shone zero qualities that exemplifie her as a ruler#so why are so many showcharacters so convinced she would be a great queen#Alicent Rhaenys Corlys Erryk (I think?) all talk about how great and just of a ruler she will be#it would be great if the show would stop telling me that and actually show it#hotd#house of the dragon#anti ryan condal#hotd critical

i think the problem that arises with "x desire comes from internalized oppression" stuff is not that it suggests we should be critical with our desired and how they are constructed. it's that some people have already decided the correct answer to that introspection. so if you Really questioned your own oppression you would know that Enjoying Sex Work Is Bad! and if you haven't come to that conclusion than you are still brainwashed. it is vital that we respect a person's ability to introspect on their desires and come to a different conclusion about them as an individual. & frankly choice feminism is still choice feminism when the focus is on Rejecting Everything Patriarchal instead of eyeliner so sharp it could kill a man.
#m.#tbh I think individualistic feminism would be a better term but whatever#the core problem is the idea that individual choices made for the self are the Most Important Feminist Thing#like. you can be a very introspective critical feminist And enjoy bimbocore aesthetics#you can be an androgynous bare-faced unshaved dyke but do barely any critical feminist introspection
