My short film M52 is now online!!! I'm happy to share with you this 10 minutes animated short film I made as a creative challenge. It was improvised one week at a time during one year and started only with the simple and abstract idea of a character pushing a big cube in the desert. The rest of the story and design were created at the same time than the 52 sequences of the film were animated every week. The result is an unexpected science fiction adventure into a distant future of mankind. Enjoy!

Here I’m interested in the transitions that are used, but also how the background colour is incorporated into the scenery. I also like the flashing textures that are used which is something I always try to do in my work, but want to do it in a more refined way, like in this animation. This background colour is similar to the one i’m using in my Pandora project, so I want to see how I can also incorporate it into my images for a more consistent feel.

Rooms

A continuation on my last post. Whereas in my last post i found the story more complelling, in this video i find the visuals more compelling. It brings me back to reading picture books. I’d always get lost in the visuals, and have a sense of the story without much aid of the words. You can learn a lot of extra information about the story with a visual. It changes the way you understand it. Suddenly you can see an emotion, or a gesture or a piece of information neglected in the telling of the story. Visuals bring interpretation and understanding, though they are not altogether necessary. 

New question. Why is it so rare for me to see this kind of storytelling with 3D animation? 3D is a lot more rigid I suppose. Its harder to make fluid dreamlike transitions from one idea to another. Its good for concrete storytelling like in an animated movie............

Some friends and myself actually drove out last night to see world-renown and successful independent animator, Bill Plympton. It was a small, intimate group who sat with him, listened to him lecture on a few things and saw some early screenings of his latest work. He hen opened the floor to a Q & A session and answered very in-depth. After the talk, he generously drew a quick sketch for everyone in line. I got a sketch of his dog design from his film “Cop Dog”. Was also open to take pics with us too. Just a boost of encouragement to do your own thing. Very down to earth guy. I'm proud to see the film finally screened in my home town Montreal and for the occasion I took one of my favorite shot of the film to share the news.
