Got an email to fill out a survey on the concept of tumblr Premium and related features, and while I'm assuming that I'm not supposed to talk about it too specifically in case some things mentioned in the survey aren't fully implemented, the features listed as possibilities sound pretty solid. Limit increases, monthly benefits (both for the user and as gifts for others), special badges and decorations, etc.

There were no features listed that are already available for free, so they're genuinely looking at offering new features for paid users rather than following in Xitter's footsteps and locking existing features behind a paywall. Likewise, nothing listed would be obtrusive to the current tumblr experience or unfairly favor a paid user over a free user any more than dropping a few bucks on a Blaze already "favors" the person being Blazed. (Which is up for debate, since that whole feature is literally "LOOK AT MY POST, BOY" and is one of the most tumblr things that tumblr has ever done.)

I was extremely leery going into the survey, because "premium" features these days are generally not premium at all, but I'm feeling very positive about the upcoming features now. Overall—and I say this as someone who has worked in webdev and digital marketing, used to pay for icons on LiveJournal for multiple RP accounts, currently pays for ad-free here, and has been doing beta testing for so long I once had the personal email addresses of both the founders of deviantART—it sounds genuinely good! Nothing anyone can't live without, but a good number of fun things that would actually be of interest to the tumblr userbase.

Now I'm just waiting to see how many of the features floated in the survey wind up in the final package, and how much that package is going to cost.

i have today come into possession of a dedicated GPU for the first time in my life so now i can say for certain that all the 120+fps gamers really are full of shit. sure this is objectively smoother than my old fixed 30fps but the smoothness doesn't actually feel better it feels kinda bad even. there's no friction to any of my movement i feel like im slipping on ice. like typing on a touchscreen instead of mechanical keyboard. this ideal gaming experience you've been selling me kinda sucks. play proverbs of hell instead

Weavers?

On the odd chance, any weavers in the audience? We've just brought a fancy bitch loom (very local, very cheap, wanted one for a long time) but it is genuinely a Fancy Bitch loom* and much higher quality/capability than my wife or I have experience with.

We're obviously happy to muddle along, fucking about and finding out, but if you weave with a loom and have recs (or anti-recs!) for resources on said weaving, links/names/etc would be very much appreciated!

*seriously it's so fucking fancy it was originally custom made for a textile designer and is an eight shaft table loom on an also custom frame; it's technically a hand loom but functions much like a jack loom. It has a built in overhead light!

As a little addendum to this post I think probably the version of Faust that goes in the most on "starts out wanting to help people but loses sight of it" is the Murnau film, in which his loss of faith is occasioned by his inability to cure a plague (which the audience knows Mephistopheles actually caused in order to get that exact result). Once he's made his deal with Mephistopheles the first thing he does is cure a plague victim, which gets him hailed as a miracle worker right up until the second person in line arrives clutching a cross, which renders his powers useless and thus exposes precisely how he got them. Upon escaping the townspeople's attempt to immediately stone him to death, he decides, fine then. If I can't do anything helpful with my demonic powers, I'm just gonna fuck. (Which he of course then does.)

This version, consequently, is probably the most explicit about suggesting that you probably just can't do much that's constructive with demonic powers, although I think it's basically implicit in most versions up until Goethe's Faust II (where he doesn't even really need them to do the constructive things he attempts, so it just fucks up his efforts unnecessarily, but Goethe's Faust isn't initially motivated by the desire to do great deeds either, he's just tired of life and also a contrarian, and also Faust I and Faust II are really really different texts). Which is why I've never really vibed with the "scientific" reading that centers around the deal with the devil as a metaphor for technical advances or whatever. Not with the Marlowe version, anyway. I get why people do it, but eh.

Random Thought

So, a while back I posted a pic of all the Pokemon dudes that I like despite knowing basically nothing about Pokemon, and it's become a very shocking fact to me that despite their apparent popularity, the train dudes do basically nothing in their home game.

Still coping with homelessness and doing my best to count my blessings when I can.

Though I still haven't found a permanent home within my means, I'm happy to share that I have a safe place to stay since last night and for the next six nights. It's a huge relief not to have to scrabble every couple of days to find a place to lay my head (including the breakroom at work), and I'm so grateful to have access to hot showers and a bed.

However...

The bad news is that this comes at the cost of leaving me severly cash strapped. Between my checking account and my pocketbook, I've got exactly $40 to last until my next paycheck (August 31). I have groceries enough to feed me the next few days and under a quarter tank of gas (the only driving I do is back & forth to work). So, as much as I don't want to ask for help again, I must because next Thursday is still ten days away. The town food shelf is open one morning a week, and that's while I'm scheduled to work. I would greatly appreciate any donations people can spare to bridge me to the 31st.
