Asexuality in fanfiction (Please read tags for warnings yall)
The awkward thing about asexuality is that when reading fanfic about a character who's ace, usually the fics I read will either
Make the character not asexual
Has the character be asexual and despises sex (Which leads to that character basically being raped by their romantic interest; seriously this trope happens WAAAAAAAY more often than I'd like)
Maybe occasionally has the character's ace-ness be nuanced, but it only goes as far as "I'm bored by sex but I'm chill with doing stuff to my partner" which only shows one other way to be asexual
This particularly annoys me because I'm asexual. I probably fall into the sex-positive category. The reason I am still ace is because I do experience arousal, I would like to have sexual experiences with others (Wouldn't be the end of the world if I didn't but it's still something I'd like to do), but I don't get "turned on" by other people. Basically if someone who's hot were to walk up to me naked I wouldn't be guaranteed to have a reaction but sometimes I can just be sitting and then suddenly have the urge to do the horizontal mambo. (I know there's probably a micro label for this, I just don't give a shit)
I know my case is rare, I know that aces like me are only brought up to try and excuse asexual erasure (I fucking hate it), but I still can't help but be disappointed that the only options for asexuality (In fanfic) are being 100%, being 0%, being some version of a stone, or being raped.
What about aces like me? What about aces who aren't like me but are still different than the three types listed above?
It's funny too cuz I remember this one fic that had smut between two characters (Consensual and both parties actually enjoyed it), one of which is ace in his original/comic book form, and the writer was all "I feel bad cuz [character] is ace in the comics and us aces get so little rep already" and I'm wondering how the author, who's ace themself, forgot about how asexuality is a spectrum?
You can have an ace character who gets horny and likes sex but just doesn't get turned on by people!
You can have an ace character who doesn't want anything to do with sex 99% of the time, but every once in a blue moon decides they want to roll in the sheets with their partner that night!
You can have an ace character who only gets aroused in specific circumstances, such as how long they've known the object of their arousal for!
Asexuality is such a wide spectrum that includes so much nuance, and seeing fic writers basically spit on it is so disheartening as a writer myself. One of the main ingredients to being a good writer, in my personal opinion, is to be able to take an aspect of your character and explore it/redefine it/expand on it in a way that satisfies the story!!!!
I don't know how to end this post tbh, I just wanna say that asexuality is more than three subtypes and you're allowed to narrow in on certain parts of the spectrum for your character, regardless of how "well-known" that part you're focusing on might be.

The Australian premiere of The Grinning Man, a tragicomic musical based on Victor Hugo's novel 'The Man Who Laughs'. Book by Carl Grose, music by Tim Phillips, Marc Teitler and lyrics by Carl Grose, Tom Morris, Tim Phillips and Marc Teitler.
Where the original production employed the use of puppets to portray the childhood of the lead characters, Salty Theatre has cast two disabled artists in the roles. Seventeen year old blind musician Lilly Cascun as Young Dea and disability advocate Matthew Hearne as Young Grinpayne.

They are joined by a brilliant ensemble of artists, guided by disability consultants and nurtured by the blossoming Melbourne based independent theatre company that is Salty Theatre.
The Grinning Man is now playing at the Alex Theatre in Melbourne until May 19th. Photography by Ben Fon.

AFAB (as in, raised into girlhood, not necessarily sex) person: wears makeup, dresses, has a skincare routine, shaves, etc etc etc
Radfem: no! You can’t do that! It’s hurting the #feminist movement! Be more masculine instead!
AFAB person: uses testosterone to achieve a more ‘masculine’ body type, has top surgery, phalloplasty, uses he/him pronouns, grows a beard, etc etc etc
Radfem: wait no not that masculine that’s also hurting the movement!

I know a lot of us will be migrating away from Tumblr if they do away with the chronological dash, so here's a link to the Anarchist Pagans And Witches Discord server I'm a mod for. Despite the name, leftist witches, pagans, and occultists of all stripes are welcome. 💕

nothing enrages me more than seeing people hate on snow white for ridiculous reasons when really it all boils down to the fact that rachel zegler is a woc.
"SNOW WHITE IS GERMAN THIS ERASES GERMAN HERITAGE !!!!!" you literally fancast random white women as snow white that have zero german ancestry, be so fucking fr now if she was white you would NOT be making the same arguments. the same goes for any other disney live action. we've seen what happened with the rapunzel fancast, and hate to break it to you bestie but florence pugh is NOT german. people hated on avantika for something that wasnt even in the works.
"SHE'S A TERRIBLE PERSON SHE HATES ON SNOW WHITE BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!" multiple male actors have done the exact same thing to their own franchises and people praise them for it (jacob elordi, the twilight guy, henry cavill i could go on).
if you're going to hate on the movie then hate it for a good reason like
1- disney supports a genocide and is on the bds list
2- there's a literal idf soldier in the movie. i feel like everyone's brushing past gal gadot being in it like she hasnt been staunchly pro idf and is a well known zionist.
3- disney using cgi for the dwarves. im pretty sure dinklage meant 'btw you don't need to typecast/cast people with dwarfism/restricted growth for fantasy only, they exist outside of that and that should be casted for everything like everyone else and you're only perpetuating harmful stereotypes' and disney took that as 'you're right! let's include them in neither to be fair!'
not to mention the amount of people i've seen saying 'isnt snow white supposed to be prettier than the evil queen' shove your loose morals up your even looser arse and choke on them. that is a young woman you're talking about with real feelings and zegler is 100 times better than that zionist

Mainstream spaces don't know how to light Black People OR why Black People tend to look less beautiful in media than they actually are in real-life...
So, I'm gonna highlight yet another issue in Hollyweird that hobbles Black people (especially women) at the ankles. The fact that this white woman figured this out herself comes down to caring enough about her work to figure out how to do this right *cough* Annie Leibovitz's ashy sad photos of Black woman *cough* Every brown-skinned celebrity I've been fortunate enough to see in person, 9 times out of 10 looks better in person because of this issue.

How would you replace the word Journeyman?
I realise Journeyperson exists, and I encourage its use, but it does feel like a term specifically designed to replace Journeyman, rather than a title that formed organically in a place that puts no stock in gender roles. And since that's exactly what I wanted the City of Fenblith to be, the word just wouldn't do.
The other titles were simple enough. Those who were training for a trade were Novices; those who had mastered it, Masters. Since I had decided to call the levels of expertise Ranks, those who had finished their training would be Ranked, with those not allowed to have a vocation being Unranked.
But there had to be something between Ranked and Master. Something to indicate you were more than just someone capable of performing your job, but not quite someone who understood its every facet.
Eventually, it was Warhammer 40K that offered me the solution in the form of the Priesthood of Mars, whose members are known as Tech Adepts.
Someone who's an adept is "a highly skilled or well-trained individual." That was the perfect description for what I was trying to name, and the term was gender neutral to boot.
So now, the people of Fenblith start their careers as Novices, become Ranked when they finish their training, and Adepts if they prove particularly skilled at their vocation, with only a few of them ever becoming Masters.
I'm happy with that outcome. Still, I'm curious: what would you have done?

i don't want to put my uninformed foot in my mouth or get involved with the Discourse but i've been seeing the two extremes of reactions to the korean low birth rates issue (on tumblr and twitter both) and i'm just kind of like. look. i feel like "low birth rates (in many countries but especially japan and korea as part of this conversation) are more broadly the result of capitalism/a culture of overwhelming overwork that makes social relationships and having families incredibly inaccessible to young people" and "low birth rates are very much a part of the current conversation about misogyny and social expectations for women in korea especially in the context of reproduction as 'unpaid labor' for women" are statements that can both be true
#laughs awkwardly#gender#especially considering the ways patriarchal expectations and capitalism very much intersect in terms of quality of life for women#ex. women being expected to have kids / raise kids / do all the housework and cooking in a relationship#while ALSO existing in a society where women (even married women) have to work demanding jobs to deal with the high cost of living#AND women are systemically discriminated against in terms of pay / job availability / work environment and harassment#all of these things add up. these conversations are not opposing points of view. you know?#and also like. not super comfortable with how TERFs are discussed in terms of non-white cultures#TERFism / radfems as a MOVEMENT (and a cult) is very much rooted in white supremacy / ideals of womanhood#again. multiple things can be true at the same time. yes i do see (from my perspective involved in taiwanese social media)#some east asian feminists engage in transphobia in ways that approach radfem rhetoric ('women are victims of men' 'men are predators'#type generalized sentiments which you can imagine gains a lot of traction among women traumatized by patriarchy)#but movement-wise i don't think it's fair (or just in good faith) to generalize radical feminists from non-white countries#to straight up TERFs. which again. rooted in white supremacy. keep feeling like i have to remind people it doesn't make sense#for asians to be white supremacists and that not all oppression on earth stems directly from white people. you weirdos#'what are you talking about' in east asia the type of feminist statements called 'radical' are stuff like.#women shouldn't have to wear make up every time they go outside. women shouldn't be expected to do all housework.#should men pay for women on dates. debates that i think in the states we kind of take for granted as stuff settled years ago#even if some feminists might be transphobic it's not necessarily Transphobia As Core Tenets Of The Movement. does anyone get the difference#basically what i'm saying is. wow these tags got long. maybe let's not apply uniform standards of 'correct language and values'#to non-white people and attack them when as all movements they are fluid and influenced by the people living in it#TERF-style transphobia is not the predestined course for them. maybe it's more productive to have open discussions about transphobia#to work towards inclusivity and solidarity in these movements than to prescribe White Internet Morality to them#and declare that they're evil when they are still very much having conversations that need to be had. thanks i think that's all#essentially. i find that 'how dare a non-american movement not have morally pristine vocabulary priorities and membership#as determined by white leftists' to be in itself kinda a racist attitude

having now read the manga one of the funniest things to me now is watching people talk about Sugishita's hair when watching the anime and assuming he's like. a raggedy man with split ends who doesn't do shit with his hair or whatever. And the reality is the man gets hair treatments once a month???? he just hates tying it up.
This is not a raggedy man with untamed hair, this is a vain motherfucker with long luscious locks of hair he refuses to tie up, cut or hide.
That long hair is a risk in a fight and a sign of cockiness and indulgence because he still loves that long hair enough to keep it and maintain it.
That's the opposite of the raggedy neglectful long hair trope. this delinquent has long hair because of hard work and effort. That hair's probably healthier than I am.

That conversation yesterday was incredibly respectful, much more than I would expect to get from Twitter, but I am *still* reeling at how I got 'fact checked' by someone's 90-second google search, and that my claims were 'not accurate' as to what they read on wikipedia and imdb.

🌕🩸🧛‍♀️Inclusive Art Callout: Submit Your Period Art and Stories for our Vampire-Themed festival project 🧛‍♀️🩸🌕 (UK-Based)
🌕🧛‍♀️ Get Involved with the Period Vampires at The Womb Tomb (UK-Based)! 🧛‍♀️🌕
The Period Vampires are an immersive theatrical group with a mission to normalise period conversations in the silliest way possible. At our festival venue, The Womb Tomb, we offer free period products, pain relief, menstrual education, and a safe space to talk about periods. We also aim to raise awareness about the issue of health inequity at music festivals, where menstrual care facilities, such as bins and handwashing stations, are often lacking. Thanks to our efforts, music festivals we’ve attended have started including bins in toilets at our request.
We've received brilliant feedback and have encouraged many to try free reusable products for the first time. Now, we're gearing up for 2025 with new artwork, games, and fresh ways to share people’s stories!
We need your help to make this happen:
🖼️ What We’re Looking For:
'Men Bleed Too' Signs: Trans/NB themed signs (no bigger than A3) to create an inclusive atmosphere.
Postcard-Sized Artworks/Poems: Period or vampire-themed creations (bonus points for both!).
Your Stories: Share your funny, embarrassing, emotional, or special period stories. To normalise the conversation, we must share our own stories. We’ll honour your stories by weaving them into our web of narratives that will grow over time. (We won’t share any personal details alongside the stories.)
Important Notes:
All submissions must be inclusive; anyone can bleed. Please avoid using the word "sanitary" or "hygiene" products—we call them period products. Your period is not dirty.
We’ll photograph your artwork in our venue and send it to you.
📬 Submission Guidelines:
If sending artwork, include your artist name/Instagram handle/whatever you use to credit your work.
Your email
Your name
You can include these details on a slip of paper in the envelope or packaging.
📧 Email Your Stories To: [email protected] 📦 Send Artwork To: [DM us for the postal address] (UK-based)
Interested in joining the Vampires on their hellish crusades? Email us at [email protected] and follow us on Instagram at u/theperiodvampires.
Join the Vampires: We are especially interested in having people of colour, non-binary, and trans individuals join our crew of vampires. Your voices and experiences are essential to our mission of inclusivity and representation.
Let’s change the conversation about periods—together!

Maybe this isn't the most important thing right now but have you ever noticed how companies sure know what a woman is when they want to advertise?
Like you have your "super inclusive" tampon or pad company that refuses to say women or female but I recently saw an ad for an underwear subscription service that began with "hey ladies".
Makeup has suddenly become more "inclusive" and yet skincare and haircare brands use nearly exclusively female models.
It's like they suddenly are very aware of what a woman is as soon as they acknowledge their consumer base is mostly female.
Crazy how that works huh?
