TW: Pet Loss

We lost ScarFace a few hours ago. I woke up this morning to him curled against my side, limp and unresponsive but still breathing. I made him comfortable, made sure he was warm and knew he was loved. He went gently, peacefully slipping away in his sleep with me by him. He was laid to rest in my yard because this neighborhood was his home and he had lived here his entire life. It felt only right to let this sweet old man stay in the only home he had ever known.

His last week was spent indoors, spoiled and safe, knowing he was loved. I am forever grateful for the time I had with him.

I'm okay, I promise. I knew a few weeks ago that we were nearing this moment and I was even more certain when he made the choice to come inside. He was a very old feral, older than most street cats ever live to be. His passing was age-related and he did not suffer in the end. I am at peace knowing he's at peace.

Rest in peace, ScarFace. You were a good boy and you were loved.

what had started as a simple night out had turned into this - squished between absolute two giants in every sense of the word. a mountain of a man with an accent you couldn't place and his equally masked companion that smelled like bourbon and sin.

the austrian one had been a mess when he'd first approached you, accent thick and words slurred through broken English when he asked you to help find his friends. könig, you learned his name was. 

and before long, ghost, he'd introduced himself as, was at his side, smirking beneath his mask as könig rambled in german. könig hardly noticed his friend's arrival, it seemed, too wrapped up in his hands on your hips. 

“ich habe bis heute nicht gelebt. du bist so wunderschön, Taube. ich könnte in deinen Augen sterben.”

and you didn't even realize when ghost had moved to cage you in, leaning down to whisper in your ear, barely audible over the loud bass of the music. 

“e's sayin’ he thinks yer fit. ain't tha’ sweet, princess?”

ghost's fingers skimmed over your arms, the touch leaving goosebumps in his wake, made only worse when könig's fingers flexed against your hips to pull you flush to him. 

the way your breath hitched must not have gone unnoticed because a chuckle was leaving ghost's mouth.

“she'd a left if she wasn't into ya.” ghost's voice low and teasing. “but looks like she's into me too.”

and before you knew it, you were being pushed against the wall of ghost's hotel room, könig's medical mask discarded as he mouthed on the skin where your neck and shoulder met. 

“big guy really likes ya.” ghost took a sip from a bottle of water, watching you like a cat about to strike.

your lips parted to respond but before you could, ghost's fingers were holding your chin to force  your mouth wider. water cascaded into your mouth, only dripping small droplets down your chest when könig's hands pushed your dress up.

“drink up, y'r gonna need it.”

the insinuation sent a shiver down your spine. 

könig huffed against your chest, more german that you didn't understand.

“spiel nicht mit ihr. sie gehört mir.”

whatever könig said had ghost clicking his tongue, dragging his fingers through the short hairs at the nape of könig's neck. 

“you won't even fuck ‘er right, ya drunk bastard.” ghost mused, a wicked glint in his eyes as he tugged könig, effectively detaching him from you to give himself the space where könig was. “‘s better off in my hands.”

a sharp growl rumbled in könig's chest as ghost moved him. “wir können teilen.”

suddenly you had a feeling that neither of them were going to let you off very easily tonight.

No mystery here - very well. They've fought together long enough to know each other's fighting styles and instincts. Coordinating their movements in battle is second nature to them. That said, Ayrenn is more the one who will forge ahead, acting as spearhead and beacon to her soldiers/allies. Sielaire adapts and covers her weak points, matching Ayrenn's pace and watching her back.

June Book Reviews: Translation State by Ann Leckie

The long-awaited (at least for me) continuation of Leckie's Radchaai universe. Enae has spent hir whole life taking care of an elderly relative. When that relative dies, Enae is forced from the house-- and into a diplomatic make-work job that sie is determined to succeed in. Which sie does, setting hir on an impact path with mysterious orphan Reet and also a concerning number of alien Presger translators.

I think the reason I didn't click as well with Provenance (the other spin-off from the main trilogy) is that it was incorporating mystery tropes, but leaving out important elements like a neatly tied up ending. Translation State, on the other hand, is doing romance tropes, and executing them beautifully. Albeit with an extra side helping of murder cannibalism. Reading this book was like rolling around like a cat in catnip. Maybe a bit predictable in the character beats, but very indulgent.

This was also a book with an interestingly alien POV. We learn a lot more about the Presger, much of it concerning, although often very funny. It's not necessary to read the Ancillary trilogy before this book, but this book does explain a lot of baffling translator shenanigans from the trilogy. (The bit about swallowing the fish and spitting it out alive makes sense now. Sorta.)

I had a lot of fun reading this book, and I'd say it's one of my favorites for this year. If you liked the Ancillary Justice series and Winter's Orbit, I'd highly recommend it.

The European wildcat (Felis silvestris) prefers forest areas with transitions to open land close to forests. Dense bushes or hedges, near-natural streams and deadwood collections are very important habitat elements for these wild cats. The presence of cover-rich migration corridors between the individual habitats is also crucial.

"You can remove your make-up for that", doesn't quite capture the saying, even tho it's close. The saying basically means "no way" or "you can forget that!"

I will provide you with the exherb written in German and in English for ease. Keep in mind that the book is very old so the German version provided here is slightly altered to be more legible.

Secondary english sources report that Rengger observed a population of “scant haired cats” and suggested that they were the descendants of european house cats that had adapted to the hotter climate. The text has not been translated into english and I want to know exactly what it says.

Berlinerisch is another dialect that is slowly becoming less used, just because Berlin is such a convergent place where many different people come to visit or live when they are coming to Germany.

Another prominent language in Germany is English and over half of the population can speak the language, and it is recognized the official language of business. There is a term that is referred to as ‘lingua franca’, which is defined by Merriam-Webster as “any of various languages used as a common or commercial tongues among peoples of diverse speech”.  Obviously, German the main language spoken in Germany and surrounding countries. However, because English is also so prevalent in the area, the impact shouldn’t hinder people’s ability to effectively communicate.

During the time I spent in high school, I studied German and was even a member of the German club my senior year. I really felt like I had a very solid understanding of the language, and I’m embarrassed to admit that I haven’t been able to spend as much time on continuing/maintaining my knowledge on German. I don’t speak German. ~ Ich spreche nicht Deutsch. ~ I-soft ch  sh-p-ray-ha  ni-soft ch-t  Duh-t-ch

My name is (name). ~ Mein Name ist (name) ~ M-i-n  nom  i-st (name)

Now some of these words look difficult, and honestly it was hard to write out the pronunciations because a lot of the words come from the throat and use soft consonant sounds. For example, the letters ch together in English make a certain sound like in the words cheese or check. However, in German the ch sound is more of what it counts like when a cat hiss like in the words I or ich. Another important thing to remember is that whenever there are two vowel sounds together, you are going to hear the second vowel more than the first. For example, in the word Beach in English sound like Bee-ch, but the German word for no is nein and you don’t pronounce the e at all. This can make translation just based off reading difficult. Finally, something that is very important is the formality of your speech. When you are speaking to an elder or someone you do not know, then you must always conjugate your sentences to be a formal you. For example, in the translation I gave above for the phrase, ‘Can you help me?’ I used a formal Sie and matching verbal conjugation as well. If you were asking your friend for some help, you may ask ‘Kannst du mir helfen?’ which is a less formal way of asking. Respect however is always highly valued in Germany, and some may be offended if you immediately assumed they are okay with having an informal conversation with you. Understanding the phrase “Language influences our view of reality” is something that needs to be taken into consideration when you are thinking about communicating with others in a different language. You never want to make people feel uncomfortable or worse break some unmentioned language rules that you didn’t take the time to learn about. Based on our culture, values, or personal upbringing, language is our first gateway into understanding other people, and that value shouldn’t be understated.

Because there seems to be so much confusion in the notes by people who speak some German but aren't fluent, the correct way to phrase this would have been: "Meine scheiß Katze Gniesbert ist schon wieder in meinen Gaming-PC geklettert." (Since it's a meme, the errors in the sentence of course contribute to the humor.)

Replacing the ß with an ss: it's normal in Swiss German, where the ß doesn't exist. "Scheiß" indeed comes from "Scheiße" (shit) but can be used colloquially as a non-declinable adjective. It's a fairly recent development. It's der scheiß Hund, die scheiß Katze, die scheiß Menschen. It literally means "shit dog" etc. and can be insulting, but in terms of what it actually means in this meme, "fucking dog" etc. is more accurate. The stress is on the substantive. This is actually such an intricate matter, because you can also say Scheißhund, Scheißkatze (the Duden knows only this version as of yet), then the stress would be on the first syllable and it would mean "very bad dog/cat" or a dog/cat that shits a lot. Some discussion on the matter here.

Also: "sie ist in meinen PC geklettert" = she has climbed into my PC "sie ist in meinem PC geklettert" = she has climbed up/around inside my PC

The hyphen between Gaming and PC is necessary, don't let anyone tell you differently. "Gaming PC" is using a Deppenleerzeichen which will make you look stupid to, well, me and other grammar... enthusiasts, aka the only people whose judgement matters ;)
