Be My Favorite and the Perils of Getting What You Think You Want
Tumblr media
This show continues to astound me with how smart it is; it truly does get better and better every week. In this episode, Kawi finished fixing everything on his list - saving his dad, growing closer to Pear, repairing friendships with Max and Pisaeng - and headed back to the future to reap the rewards. And once we got there, we realized very quickly that getting what he thought he wanted did not in fact fix his life.
This new Future Kawi is a successful recording artist, he is still friends with Max and Pisaeng, and he got to be in a long-term relationship with Pear. But his dad still died, his relationship with Pear fell apart, and he is now struggling with alcoholism. He is deeply unhappy, and the things he thought he wanted did not actually result in the kind of life he hoped he would have. Connecting with Pisaeng again only seems to reinforce that he’s been looking in the wrong place for what he seeks, and he is not done with the work to get there.
This is a genius turn of events. I am impressed that the show decided to pursue the thread of Kawi’s alcoholism, which they have been seeding the entire time. We have seen him turn to substances to manage his emotions, we have seen him blow well past his own limits, and we have seen him struggle to maintain control. All of these characteristics left unaddressed can easily result in a substance abuse problem, especially in someone who is not doing the necessary work to address their behavior problems and get to the root of what’s causing their issues.
In this episode, Kawi interrupted his own growth arc midstream to go back to the future, thinking that what he had achieved was enough to guarantee a good outcome. But he was not finished doing the necessary work to deal with his underlying issues and become the kind of person who could be a good partner to anyone, and he was denying an important part of himself. He looked away from his growing feelings for Pisaeng and their implications and instead stayed focused on his original goal of being with Pear, even as he wasn’t entirely certain why he wanted it anymore. He stopped thinking about how to be a better person to the people in his life. He stopped putting in the effort to change. And so in this new timeline he made Pear miserable in their relationship and ultimately still ended up alone.
Another thing this episode showed us is how very much everyone else in this story is affected by Kawi’s choices. Pear spends years in a bad relationship with Kawi and then gets stuck with a cheating asshole of a husband. Kwan ends up used and discarded. Max is still playing the role of frustrated caretaker to Kawi’s emotional mess. Pisaeng alone seems to have found some peace, and it’s interesting that in this timeline, it was getting away from Kawi and moving on from his feelings for him that did it. Despite that kiss at the end, it’s clear that this version of Kawi is not the one who can be the partner Pisaeng deserves.
Kawi is not done doing the work to accept his true desires and become his best self, and this narrative is not going to let him take shortcuts. Insert jack shepherd.gif here because WE HAVE TO GO BACK.

☀️ AnalyzGolden's Reactions To Disventure Camp Season 1: All Eliminations, Plot Twists, Etc. *Merge COMPILATION* ☀️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This Post is compilation of my reactions to Disventure Camp's Eliminations, Plot Twists, & Overall Big Moments.
For those of my followers who don't know, Disventure Camp is an independent animated YouTube show by OddNation Cartoons, that originated as a Total Drama fanfiction.
But due to legal stuff (Fresh TV HATES it when fan stuff of their shows get attention), they found a way around it by changing up the show to make it original, with completely original characters and settings. Because of this, they remade the first season after Season 2 was already done and published, and the remake (which is the version I watched) is the one that is canon to the show's story.
Btw, the original Season 1 that they made before this drama is now considered the 'beta' version, and it's not canon to the show's story. So you don't HAVE to watch the beta to understand anything, but it's there. (maybe one day I'll react to that too)
Obviously, BIG SPOILERS for this show.
So if you haven't watched it yet, I encourage you to watch it first and then check out these posts from me. The show is free on YouTube. They have it both in English and Spanish.
Check Out This Post For A Fast Travel To My Full Reactions To The Season
I AM planning on making more posts about this show, so look forward to those. (Including A Tier List post, compilations of the more funnier bits, etc)
With the exception of a couple of meme bits, THIS COMPILATION POST WON'T CONTAIN THE SCREENSHOTS. Tumblr has an image limit of 30 images per post.
So if you want the screenshots, see my episode reactions.
I also had to split this into two parts (again) because it got too big and Tumblr wouldn't allow it.
<< Premerge Compilation
Without further ado, let's get right into the CHAOS that ensued with this!
Tom's Termination
Why is Tom depressed?
"Can we speak?"
"I'm trying to wallow in the darkness in my heart."
"Shortly before I came here, I ended a relationship that was very toxic and I got hurt."
Oh he's telling Tom this. Okay. I approve. He deserves to know.
How many people have he told this to? Miriam, Ellie, now Tom?
"HEY GUYS, DO YOU THINK JAKE WAS IN A TOXIC RELATIONSHIP?! I CAN'T TELL!"
I'm not annoyed by it, I'm cracking a bad joke
"These aren't excuses for how I've been treating you, but I want you to know I feel terrible."
You yelled at him ONCE. And you apologized for it three times now.
I wouldn't count that as "I've treated you terribly this entire time".
I'm glad he's making this clear though. He knows when to take accountability.
"I said I was sowwy, pwease fowgive me!"
"I have a hard time trusting people, Tom, I just... talking to you makes me forget sometimes how shitty life can be. I don't want to lose that."
This is actually good on Jake's end. He's explaining his situation to Tom, not excusing it, and trying to be open and honest.
"After all this is over, I would love if... you and I... we... continue-"
"Jake."
Why is Tom so pissy? He wasn't like this last episode.
"I got a call last night... I got fired."
😨
WHAT?!?!?!?!
HE GOT FIRED?!?!?!?!?!?
WH-WH-HOW?!?! HOW-?!
*Golden.exe has stopped working*
OH MY GOD...
I DID NOT EXPECT THAT BEING WHERE THIS STORY WAS HEADING.
SO HIS MISSION FAILED?!
Maybe he'll explain it. I'll keep listening.
"A video in which YOU mentioned my work was uploaded to the Internet and my boss saw it."
OH...
*covered mouth* Oh my god...
JAKE, YOU FUCKED UP BEYOND REPAIR
THERE IS NO REPAIRING THIS
You got your crush fired, now you suffer significant consequences for the rest of your days.
Well Tom is DEFINATELY not gonna want to be around you ever again.
"I'm so sorry-"
"Not now."
"Tom, if you need anyone to-"
"I SAID NOT NOW."
*storms off*
GOD...
I can't imagine how that makes Tom feel though. Getting fired because of a guy you liked...
OH WAIT CAUSE I PUT TOM IN THE HEADING LAST EPISODE. SHIT. I CAUSED THIS.
I THOUGHT I DIDN'T JINX ANYONE LAST EPISODE.
Episode 8 Elimination + Gabby/Ellie Kiss
"Tonight, we won't just be reading the votes..."
OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH MY GOD IT'S A TOTAL DRAMA ISLAND REFERENCE
THEY DID THIS SAME THING ON THEIR FIRST MERGE COUNCIL TOO
'GABBY'
YEAH YEAH WE KNOW...
OH GOD I'M SCARED NOW...
IT'S EITHER GABBY OR JAKE AND BOTH ARE GONNA HURT
'GABBY'
"This is for getting me out of today's challenge."
BEEF.
'GABBY'
And then it's gonna be all the Jake votes piling up.
'TOM'
OH WAIT THEY'RE VOTING TOM. WAIT A MINUTE.
NO IT'S TOM THAT'S GOING.
I mean I'm not saying that's a bad move, it's a good move, but...
'TOM'
OH I'M SORRY TOM. THIS IS IT FOR YOU.
'GABBY'
WAIT WHAT??!?!?!?!
NOOOOOO!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!?!??!?!
SHE'S ON YOUR SIDE!!!!
"Now without Gabby, Ellie will have no choice but to return with us to her old alliance."
SHE WAS ALREADY WITH YOU, YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT!
THAT RUINS YOUR CHANCES TO ALLY WITH HER!!!
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!??!!
'GABBY'
OH NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
NO COME ON THAT'S BULLSHIT
THAT'S A BULLSHIT GAME MOVE!!
DON'T DO THIS!!!!
'GABBY'
😨
"Gabby. That's six votes. You're out."
GABBY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I'm actually HURT
I'm actually DEVASTATED...
OMG GABBY NOOOOOOOOOO
Okay, I'm calming down...
GOD I'M MAD. I'M SO MAD.
"I knew something was wrong."
HUH, at least now Ellie KNOWS who to trust, right?!
At least Jake came CLEAN about who his alliance was voting for! Fiore's DIDN'T.
HUH, I WONDER WHICH ALLIANCE I SHOULD SIDE WITH
That's a nail in the coffin. Ellie is NEVER siding with the villains.
I hope that gameplay was sounded smart on your ends.
Okay no I'll talk about this later.
"They ruined my plans."
OH YEAH NOW SHE'S OUTTED.
Fiore, you fucked up your entire game.
"You can make fun and celebrate all you want, but it won't last long! The three of you are still outnumbered."
OOF. And she just flat out said it.
"I am NOT working with you after this! You can't make me!"
"If you still had your totem, you could've saved yourself."
Yeah... should've kept that idol.
OH WAIT I PUT GABBY IN THE HEADING, I JINXED HER ELIMINATION, GODDAMMIT!!!
NO, I CAUSED THIS!!!
I SHOULDN'T HAVE PUT HER IN THE HEADING!!!
"I'm happy I saved you. You're the only person here who has ever taken me seriously, and possibly the only person I've ever met who has made me feel... valid."
💗
"Because you are! There's nothing wrong with you."
YOU BET THERE'S NOT. YOU'RE WONDERFUL, GABBY.
"I hope we'll keep talking when this is all over."
"We will."
*Kiss*
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH
YEEEESSSS!!!
*I got a 'Speak No Evil' trailer ad*
WOW. TONAL WHIPLASH THERE.
Tom Face Reveal + Tom/Jake Kiss
"Any update about your job?"
He got FIRED. I don't think you get an update after that.
"Anyway, I haven't been sure for awhile if this is what I really want..."
Oh?
You didn't want to be a spy?
"...or if I'm even good at it..."
Uh...
Yeah, you weren't, I'm gonna be brutally honest.
You can find a new job. One that you love. One where you can work AND maintain relationships.
"You think you weren't meant to be a spy?"
"I don't know. But it's not like I have a choice anymore."
Yeah... that's a hard situation. I can relate to that.
AH-!
OH MY GOD.
I DIDN'T-OH MY GOD...
"I don't work there anymore... I don't need this..."
So he WAS wearing that for his job! So he's ditching his career?!
OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH...
Oh THAT'S why...
I was thinking awhile it would be that he had a scarred face, but I wasn't sure. AND I was joking about it this whole time. God I feel awful now...
I'm trying to look at this properly. What happened? Was he in a fire or something? I can't tell cause it's a cartoon, but that MIGHT be burn scars?????
I don't know, maybe he's gonna explain it.
"My first job was a couple months ago. I was sloppy and I got found out. Things went wrong, and my captors... gave me this..."
😨
OH MY GOD, HE WAS TORTURED?!?!?!
HOLY-I DIDN'T THINK THEY WERE GONNA GO THAT DARK WITH IT.
Holy god, I can't even imagine. I don't want to imagine Tom getting tortured like that.
"The boss wasn't happy. I was tasked to come onto this show as a contestant to investigate it. This job was my last chance, and I blew it."
Ouch...
"Were you using that mask to hide your identity or... were you...?"
"That's just an excuse. The truth is I... I felt ashamed..."
Aw...😢
"But you look good, Tom."
Awwwwww...💗
*Kiss*
...wwwwAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH
OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH MYY GOD!!!!
*I got out of my chair and paced around for a minute*
AAAAAAAHHHH💗
*I'm giddy and out of breath*
I didn't expect them to kiss today... oh my god...
YEEESSS!!! I FEEL VALIDATED!!!!!
Oh my god, Tom Face Reveal. AND... ship name kiss, IN THE SAME SCENE. That's too much for the feels.
Jam. It's Jam isn't it? I don't have jam on me right now.
I actually don't like eating jam. I'm not a jelly person.
Okay okay okay, I'm sorry. I'll keep going.
"...I'm not."
Aw 💗
"Attention campers! Challenge time!"
Oh screw you!
They're good for each other. They're actually good for each other.
I HAD MY DOUBTS. But they do work.
*I had to get water* (Y'all keep your dirty jokes about that)
Ellie Gets 'Disarmed & Killed' (BLOOD TW)
"What happened with your mask?"
Oh yeah they don't know...
God it's SO WEIRD seeing Tom without the mask now.
OH SHIT-
UM, HELLO?!?!?!
IM SORRY, WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?!?!
“What the hell is that?!”
My thoughts exactly Ellie!
DID THEY WAKE UP IN THE FUTURE?! WHAT'S HAPPENING?!?!
I'M WATCHING A TOTAL DRAMA FANFICTION, RIGHT?!?!
"It looks like a-a-a person..."
"Like a dead person?!"
Tom, you killed a guy!
OH GOOD LORD-
YEAH WE'RE NOT WATCHING DISVENTURE CAMP ANYMORE
If you asked me what my predictions were for this show: "Let's make a PLOT TWIST in the middle of the show and turn it into a zombie apocalypse 'The Walking Dead' show" Would NEVER be on my list.
WHAT THE HELL
I mean if you know me, you know I like death game stories...
But surprisingly, I don't actually like zombie apocalypse stories. It's not just my cup of tea.
Because zombie apocalypse stories are just so bloody hopeless and there's absolutely no way out of inevitable fate. It's just "This is hell, wait till it's your turn to die."
And I just naturally find that less compelling than stuff like Hunger Games, Squid Game, and Danganronpa, where there IS a possibility to escape your fate, even if it's really small.
With these kinds of stories, I'm just waiting for everyone to die. So I get less attached.
That's just my opinion.
"Did you hear that?!"
"Sounded like gunshots!"
"Don't worry guys! It's just Tom killing a man! It's fine!"
"I KISSSED A SERIAL KILLER?!?!"
I mean, I WOULD say this is all a stage show. Like these are just people wearing makeup.
BUT YOU CAN'T FAKE TOM KILLING A GUY.
UNLESS YOU'RE A PSYCHOPATH WORSE THAN CHRIS MCLEAN
XD
"I don't care if he's a serial killer! HE'S MY LOVE! WE'RE LETTING HIM IN. WHAT'S THE WORSE THAT COULD HAPPEN?!"
"What's going on?!"
"Ellie why do you have ketchup splashed all over your face?"
"They looked like people, but they're not!"
"I would never kill a man! I swear!!"
"What if it was a woman?"
"...shit!!"
"Is that... a bite?"
OH SHIT
They're not gonna KILL Ellie, right?!
Cut off her arm, and she might be saved!
"...well, one step closer to winning."
GRETT. WTF?! YOU"RE A PSYCHOPATH!!!
I mean I'm not surprised. BUT WTF?!
"I think we... have to... cut off your arm."
NO I WAS JUST JOKING, YOU'RE ACTUALLY GONNA DO IT?!?!?!?!?
"GOLDEN IS OUR OVERLORD AND SHE TOLD ME TO SAVE YOU BY CUTTING OFF YOUR ARM!!!"
"Isn't this just a silly challenge?!"
GOD I HOPE SO
CAUSE THIS IS FUCKED UP
OH MY GOD THEY'RE ACTUALLY DOING IT...
I'M SORRY ELLIE!!!
"So... this ISN'T a challenge?"
YOU THINK?!?!!!
NOW YOU REGRET IT?!?!
"I think I'm gonna faint."
I WOULD TOO.
ELLIE NOOOOOOOO
Alec & Miriam 'Die' (BLOOD TW)
Tom is probably the most equipped for surviving this.
OH GOD-
YOU CAN'T JUST HOLD A CHILD AT GUNPOINT, TOM
YOU CAN'T JUST DO THAT.
"I'll put one right between your eyes."
Tom, you're done.
OKAY, RIP ALEC
Tom is NOT fucking around!
"Tom! Are you okay?"
"No worries. I got a body count in the double digits now. Cool, huh?"
NOOOOOOOOOOOO
MIRIAM NOOOOOOOO
WHAT?!! THAT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE!!
"Miriam, stay with me!!"
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO...
NOT THE GRANDMA
"Don't leave me!!"
AWWWW JAKE NOOO😢
He's losing another grandma! 😭
"Coming to this camp was worth it... I didn't think my last days would end like this... but I'm happy they were with you... you are the grandchildren I never had."
😭💗
HE'S YOUR GRANDSON. DON'T LEAVE HIM.
NOOOOOOO
"Not again!!" *cries*
AWWW JAKE, HONEY NOOOOOO 😭
Don't Make Jake Suffer Challenge. Level: Impossible.
Yeah lets just cut to a six year old driving a bus. Why not?
I'M STILL MOURNING
Fiore Murders Everyone Else (BLOOD TW)
"I don't know... I don't think this will ever end..."
Can we give Jake a hug? PLEASE?
"Hey... at least we have each other."
THANK YOU💗
THEY LOVE EACH OTHER💗
NO GODDAMMIT
FIORE WHYYYYYYYY
“Hey guys! I got another trick I wanna show you. It’s called: ‘BURY YOUR GAYS’
*Jake gets killed too*
Goddammit...
NOT A SIX YEAR OLD MURDERING MY BOYS
HOW DID WE GET HERE?!?!??!
"I'm sorry Grett, but I need this immunity."
Wait what-
*Murders Grett*
WELP.
This is how we got here.
A six year old is celebrating among her victims.
"WHOO HOOO!!! I KILLED EVERYBODY!!!!"
WHY IS TOM IN THE FAMILY GUY POSE?!?!?!?!?
"See that's my secret Golden. My mask protects me from getting killed, so I'm just faking my death."
"...oh wait I'm not wearing my mask anymore. SHIT-"
It Was All VR
...
WAIT WHAT THE FUCK?!
IT WAS ALL VR?!
I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS.
HOW DID WE GET HERE?!??!?!?!?!
"Oh my gosh, my arm! I have my arm!"
"Oh my gosh, I've been in a coma for a MONTH! Cause I died on the first day!"
"Victory is mine! MIIIIINNNNEEE!!!"
All Fiore cares about is winning.
When a six year old is an even worse psychopath than Grett.
"Am-am-am I dead?!"
Jake. Honey.
EVERYONE is going to need SERIOUS THERAPY after this.
HOLY SHIT THAT IS TRAUMATIZING.
I can't even blame Jake one bit. He watched his friend get turned into a zombie and die. He watched his surrogate grandma die. He watched his boyfriend die. He watched HIMSELF die. AND IT WAS IN THE SPAN OF A MONTH
...nah, therapy ain't fixing him.
"A few hours ago, you fell asleep, and we put you through our hyper realistic VR simulator."
You guys are fucked up.
Even Chris McLean is saying that's fucked up.
"I'm just glad I have both my arms again."
Ellie's just done.
"Yeah TOM! Don't cut a woman's arm off! I'M VOTING YOU TONIGHT."
Watch it actually be Tom that's going and that's Ellie's reason.
I feel like Tom's story is done anyway.
"The challenge was to survive the zombie apocalypse."
You can't survive a zombie apocalypse. Either you DIE, or you DIE.
"Wait, so you KILLED ME to get immunity?!"
YEAH.
If THAT doesn't prove to you that Fiore is FUCKED UP BEYOND REPAIR, idk what does.
"Weren't we in an alliance?"
"We were. But we got exposed last round."
ARE YOU DITCHING GRETT?!
YOU NEED HER FOR NUMBERS.
Idk why I'm asking at this point. These villains plans have been stupid these past two episodes.
I mean, it's not THAT bad here because there was no other option after they killed Tom & Jake. So...
I won't rant this time.
"You'll be distorted for a few more hours, adjusting back to our time, getting back to your body, all that kind of stuff."
"And you'll probably need YEARS of therapy."
Episode 9 Elimination
"What do we do? We have to decide between Alec or Grett."
Yeah, obviously.
At least Ellie doesn't hold beef about the arm thing.
*Grett Voted Alec*
Aaaaannnndd the villains are turning on each other.
Idiots.
*Fiore Voted Grett*
Wait what are you doing?
"That game is the closest I'll ever get to legally shooting someone in the face."
Fiore you are a psycho.
*Alec Voted Grett*
"Now that we're exposed, we don't need you anymore."
Welp. Grett's gone.
Unless the heroes voted Alec...
'ALEC'
We know.
'GRETT'
'ALEC'
OH THEY DID VOTE ALEC. WAIT A MINUTE.
'GRETT'
THE HEROES VOTED ALEC. WHERE ELSE WOULD THAT COME FROM?
'GRETT'
...wait what?
'GRETT'
Wow. Didn't even need to read all the votes.
Who threw their vote on Alec then?
*thinks about it*
Jake, why'd you do that? There's no reason.
"I might be thinking about turning on the heroes, you know?"
*sigh* Queen's time to go.
"Fiore, Alec, even though you betrayed me, I won't lie. I had a good time with you."
At least she's taking this well.
"It will be difficult, but I'll try and take what you said to heart. I'll stop trying to prove anything to anyone. In fact... that includes you."
"FUCK ALL OF YOU. PEACE OUT!!"
😂👏
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS
Queen Queen Queen Queen QUEEEEENNNNN
👑
SHE SLAYED TILL THE END
...LITERALLY
Immunity Idol Found (x2)
"I found the clue to the location of an immunity totem. It should be right here."
NO WHY WOULD YOU TELL HER THAT-
Okay he doesn't know of her thinking about flipping, to be fair. But still.
"I sure hope no one STEALS this idol or anything!"
They're gonna steal it.
Ellie's gonna tell Fiore & Alec, "Hey guys, I know how to save you guys. Tom has an idol. Steal it from him and use it for the council."
That's definitely a plan!
CAN YOU TELL I'M PARANOID SINCE THE START OF THIS EPISODE?
"This is Golden speaking in your head. There are impersonal ways to play this game and save yourselves. You DON'T have to hurt Jake that way. DON'T YOU DARE. I WILL give him slay pass and I WILL torment you the rest of this season!"
"COME ON! Why Jake?! What did he ever do to you?!"
"This is not good. That totem gives Tom more power than he already has."
THEN STEAL IT.
PROBLEM SOLVED.
A Compilation Of 'STEAL THE IDOL'
"I sure hope no one STEALS the idol or anything!"
They're gonna steal it.
Steal it from him and use it for the council.
THEN STEAL IT.
steal the idol from Tom when he isn't looking
OR STEAL THE IDOL.
JUST STEAL THE IDOL.
"But how would they steal the idol?"
And when they're gone, STEAL THE IDOL.
JUST STEAL THE IDOL FROM TOM AND FLIP
Okay. Steal it.
NO YOU DON'T. STEAL IT.
STEAL THE FUCKING IDOL.
You could've just stole the idol.
😭Just steal the goddamn idol...😭
AND THEN. STEAL. THE. MOTHERFUCKING. IDOL.
STEAL. THE. FUCKING. IDOL.
So if you STEAL it
and steal the idol.
YOU COULD'VE JUST STOLE THE FUCKING IDOL.
She could've just stolen that motherfucking idol and all her problems would've been solved.
But you could've just stolen that godforsaken idol from Tom and you wouldn't have had to destroy anyone.
ME AND THIS IDOL HAVE BEEF, IF YOU CAN'T TELL
Episode 10 Elimination
Elimination already? Damn...
This is gonna be UGLY...
"I did my part. Now who are we going to vote for?"
You know what the weird part is? I don't even know how this benefits you guys.
Tom has an idol.
You didn't even have to gaslight Jake. You could've just stole the idol.
I'm pretty sure the game NEVER said that the person who got the idol was the only one who could play it.
😭Just steal the goddamn idol...😭
"Vote for Jake."
What?
Oh my god, what are you doing??
Why gaslight him then?!?!?!
"Jake, we need to talk."
"Fine. I guess I should give you a chance to explain yourself."
PLEASE. PLEASE TALK.
NOOOOO DAMMIT
Don't break them up, please... 😭🙏
"I don't know what's wrong with Jake this time, but I'm sure it was your fault."
YES. YES IT WAS.
So they are voting Jake...
So they're gonna keep their mouths shut and not worry about the idol?
I mean if they don't know Jake's in danger, they can't play the idol, right?
I THINK that's what they're doing.
"Wait. I have something to say to Tom."
...what are you doing?
"It's about Jake and all the drama surrounding him."
What are you doing? I thought you were gonna keep your mouth shut.
What's your plan? You WANT Tom to realize you're using Jake?
"Oh wait, shit! It wasn't Jake's fault this time! Welp, guess our alliance is back!"
But they already voted, so... goddammit...
"I care because it was all a lie."
"Ellie told Jake that Tom has a boyfriend and he was cheating on him. She kept them from speaking to each other all day."
WHAT IS YOUR PLAN HERE?!?!?!?
WHAT WAS THE POINT OF GASLIGHTING JAKE THEN?!?!?!?!
"Wait, what?! Is this true?!"
Oh shit now he realizes.
"Goddammit Jake, you promised you would talk to me this time!"
DID YOU NOT HEAR HER?! ELLIE WAS PREVENTING HIM FROM DOING THAT!!!!
IF HE COULD, HE WOULD HAVE.
WHY ARE YOU GETTING MAD AT JAKE?!?!
"Tom, I didn't know! I tried to talk to you, but Ellie told me not to!! Please you have to believe me!!!"
HONEY NO...
"Why are you listening to her?!"
"I thought I could trust her. I'm sorry Tom..."
"And you didn't think you could trust me?! After everything we've been through?!"

I mean, okay, that is valid. That is on Jake.
"Children, children, stop fighting please!!"
Aw Miriam 💔😢
"Wait, this doesn't end here."
OH MY GOD WHAT NOW?!?!?
"Tom, we know about your totem."
WHAT IS YOUR PLAN HERE?!?!?! I DON'T UNDERSTAND.
DO YOU WANT TO GET ELIMINATED?!?!?
"Alec, Ellie, and I voted for Jake. So if you don't use your totem to save your little dumb boyfriend, he's gone tonight."
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!?
SO YOU'RE ASKING TOM TO USE THE IDOL. WHY?!???!! THAT SCREWS YOU OVER.
Unless she's lying and she and Alec flipped...
But THAT WOULD BE EVEN WORSE.
You betray Ellie, YET AGAIN. You LOSE HER as an ally.
Unless you're trying to boot her and have her be 5th place. BUT THEN YOU HAVE JAKE AND MIRIAM AS AN ALLIANCE TO WORRY ABOUT.
YOU DON'T NEED TO DO THIS. YOU DON'T NEED TO GASLIGHT JAKE. YOU DON'T NEED TO SAY ANY OF THIS SHIT.
Just convince Ellie to be on your side to get her to flip, vote for who you want out, convince Tom & Jake to go do something that forces Tom to leave the idol behind...
AND THEN. STEAL. THE. MOTHERFUCKING. IDOL.
THAT IS THE EASIEST AND CLEANEST SOLUTION TO ALL YOUR DAMN PROBLEMS.
AND YET YOU CHOOSE TO DESTROY THESE PEOPLE INSTEAD AND MAKE THINGS TOO BLOODY COMPLICATED.
WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM?!?!?!?!?
"I'm sorry, I just can't leave here 4th place. I know if I stuck with you guys, I'd never make the finals."
"And you decided you'd mess with my personal trauma just to get further in the game?!"
YESS!! BE PISSED!!!!!!! CALL HER OUT!!!!!
"You're screwed up Ellie. You need help!"
"Actually... yes."
*snicker* Okay, that was good.
"I don't ever want to talk to you again!"
"No need to yell like that."
UM, LET'S BE HONEST. I THINK JAKE DESERVES TO BE VOCAL HERE. HE WAS GASLIT BY YOU GUYS.
"Times running out Tom. What'll it be?"
Don't play it Tom.
They're tricking you. Don't play it.
Though that's kinda bad on his end, cause that'd be him saying "Nah, fuck you Jake. Go to the bus and drive it to hell."
"Tom, please, I know I've been bad, but I promise, if you save me, we can talk tomorrow and work things out!!"
I don't think that's gonna happen...
He's begging so bad here 😭
You screwed up Jake. You screwed up...
"What's stopping you from believing another lie they tell you tomorrow?"
Insert my rant before here.
"Tom, I get that you're mad at Jake, but if he goes, you and I will go right after."
No I don't think that's how it's gonna work...
My heart is HURTING right now btw. I'm actually shaking.
"Why are you so relaxed?! If Tom plays the idol on Jake, we're screwed!"
EXACTLY. WHAT'S YOUR PLAN HERE?!??!?!?! IT MAKES NO SENSE.
"Can I please read the votes people?!"
The host is just done with it...
"I'm going to use my totem to save Jake."
Aw....
Even after everything he loves you... 😭
No...
They flipped. They HAD to have flipped...
'JAKE' *DOESN'T COUNT*
Oh no...
*I'm burying my face in my hands to hold back wet eyes*
'FIORE'
They flipped.
She's so unbothered. They flipped.
'FIORE'
They flipped.
*DREAD* THEY FLIPPED.
Is the next one Tom?
'TOM'
I KNEW IT
I KNEW IT OH NOOOOOOO...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO😭
'TOM'
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH
I have a bad feeling... Jake voted Tom cause he was mad.
He was trying to throw his vote on Tom to save the trouble, AND IT BACKFIRED HORRIBLY.
'TOM'
*Buries face in hands again*
I can't... I can't... no...
"I wonder whose fault that was."
Yeah...
"Tom, I'm sorry, please, you have to forgive me-"
"SHUT UP."
"YOU AND I ARE DONE. DON'T EVER SPEAK TO ME AGAIN."
💔😭💔
Oh my god...
Oh my god no...
No...
Oh god...
So... I'm not welling up bawling or anything...
But I am SHAKING.
I am SCREAMING.
I am on the verge of CRYING.
I fell nauseous, so add THROWING UP on that list too.
I'm so upset.
I mean I get it, villains gotta villain, but holy shit...
They were doing so well too. They could've been so great together!
THEY COULD'VE GOTTEN CHINESE TOGETHER LIKE THEY WANTED
GODDAMMIT...
This is some shit Heather would do.
And did.
I mean... compare that episode to this episode as much as you'd like. I don't really care.
My heart is actually sunken right now.
That hurt.
I think this elimination broke me.
WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH?!
Is Jake pissed? He's gotta be.
The Host's Crimes
OH HEY!
I thought you guys were eliminated! What are you doing here?
OH SHIT...
Um...
I didn't think we'd be dealing with MURDERERS...
Holy shit this just got a lot darker.
"When I found out at the hotel that Derek and Trevor were exterminating the animals in the forest, I was about to take justice into my own hands! But I remembered that the last time I tried, things didn't end well..."
"And how did you know it was them?"
"I may or may not have threatened the hotel receptionists so they would tell me the truth."
Oh my god Gabby, I love you XD
"I did all your spy work for you! You're welcome! Torture always works!"
(No it doesn't)
"I wanted to call the police! But with my record, I knew they wouldn't listen to me, so I remembered that you're a cop."
So Gabby's a delinquent...
Honestly I'm not surprised.
Also Tom was a spy, where'd you get this from?
"Then what are you? A ninja?"
XD
THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS ENTIRE TIME.
Me Getting Enraged Over Ellie Hurting Jake
Oh they made it. Cool.
Who gets the immunity though?
Talk it out? Please?
"Only one of us can win..."
"If you give this to me, maybe I'll forgive you."
Yeah, he does need it.
The opportunity is open, Ellie! Redeem yourself!
COME HOME. COME TO THE LIGHT. GET YOUR FRIENDS BACK.
"You know what? You can eat shit and die."
WHAT?!?!?! ELLIE NOOOO
NO YOU WERE DOING GOOD
WHY?!?!?!?!
"And 'BOO HOO, AWWW, I GOT CHEATED ON'. GROW THE HELL UP JAKE."
WHAT THE FUCK?! 😠
"You say you're a victim, but you're really just a sponge for drama. You feed off the smallest setbacks, acting as if the world's against you."
😠
"Tom probably saw it too."
DON'T YOU DARE DO THAT TO HIM.
"You have no right to shame me."
YOU HURT HIM. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?!
"After you voted out Gabby, I never pulled this on you, cause I have some sense to not be a dick."
BULL. SHIT. 😡 THAT WAS FIORE AND ALEC.
"Maybe if you weren't so annoying, your boyfriend wouldn't have cheated on you."
*Paused the Episode on this frame*
...
So, this is being written TEN MINUTES after I paused the episode in that frame.
What happened in between that ten minutes was that I PAUSED the episode, got out of my seat paced around my room in rage, SCREAMED THE F WORD, I'm lucky my family isn't home at the moment so they can't hear me, and I left the room and paced around in my kitchen to calm down because I felt SICK, HURT, TRIGGERED, and ATTACKED.
Not the writer's fault. They don't know. But... OMG
YOU. YOOOOOUUUUUU
YOU CANNOT DO THAT
I am VERY EMOTIONAL in this segment if you can't tell.
YOU CANNOT SAY THAT TO PEOPLE.
YOU CANNOT SAY THAT TO PEOPLE.
Maybe in a separate post, when I cooled my head, I'll talk about WHY this scene hurt me so much.
But my reason is not actually based off the characters. Roles swapped, I think I'd still react this way.
Bottom line is, remember when I said earlier that Miriam was calling Ellie out to help her?
THIS ISN'T THAT. THIS IS NOT 'ELLIE CALLING JAKE OUT ON HIS BULLSHIT', THIS IS NOT 'ELLIE GIRLBOSS MOMENT'. THIS IS SHAMING.
This is SHAMING someone with serious mental problems that need help.
This is not 'Oh, Ellie's ROASTING Jake right now, what a powerful moment for her! Hell ya, he deserved it!'
THIS TRIGGERED ME.
I actually KNEW this scene existed before I watched the show. But I had no context, didn't know what episode it was, didn't know when it showed up, and I didn't remember the exact dialogue. But it was in a clip of a reaction that was cheering for Ellie doing this.
I won't give names, I won't throw hands, that's not their fault if they see it that way. This is just VERY PERSONAL FOR ME.
I won't give massive details, because it's so personal, but why it triggered me? I HAVE BEEN THERE IN MY LIFE.
I HAVE BEEN THERE YEARS AGO, MULTIPLE TIMES, WITH MULTIPLE PEOPLE DOING THIS SHIT TO ME. Acting JUST LIKE how Ellie does here, towards me.
It caused me a lot of problems growing up. My family AGREED with the people doing that, so that was not fun. They said 'I needed to hear this. I deserved it.'
So I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. This shit does no favors to the person you're 'roasting'. If anything, this makes the behavior you're calling out WORSE. They act even MORE like this whiny bratty type as a way to cope with the thought that everyone hates them!
ELLIE. YOU CAN'T DO THIS.
THAT HURTS PEOPLE.
I DON'T CARE IF IT'S JAKE. I DON'T CARE IF YOU HATE JAKE. THAT'S NOT THE POINT.
YOU CAN'T SAY THAT TO PEOPLE.
I'm not saying Jake is innocent and doesn't deserve calling out. BUT, THAT'S NOW HOW YOU DO IT
EVERYTHING Ellie said in that was just... ANGERED ME. IT ANGERED ME.
I gotta calm down. I'm sorry. I gotta calm down. Peace.
Episode 11 Elimination
Oooooooohh god...
I'm actually feeling kinda hopeless.
I think I know who it is.
'JAKE'
Yeah...
'ELLIE'
Should've went for the gold.
'ELLIE'
'JAKE'
Aaaaaaaannnnnd I know Fiore's handwriting at this point.
It's over.
'JAKE'
*Long Depressed Sigh*
...I knew it.
We didn't get revenge. Goddammit.
"Whatever. I don't care."
"Spoken like a man who cares."
Tumblr media
"Miriam, I'm so sorry to be leaving you. Maybe if I had taken things differently, none of this would've happened."
Yeah...
"Thank you so much for supporting me. Everything from my grandmother to Tom..."
Oh come on, don't make this sad for me.
"Don't fret, kid. I thought I wouldn't open up to anyone here. But you were patient with me, and taught me that I shouldn't judge people so quickly."
Yeah. He's chaotic like that.
"You may be down, but you're not out. Play your butt off Miriam. We'll see each other when this is all over, okay?"
Yes. Win for them, Miriam.
Awwwwwwww💗
...damn. I'm gonna miss that trainwreck.
Episode 12 Elimination
"You and I can also work together to become the final two after that."
GODDAMN. MIRIAM, YOU'RE COLD.
Okay, this is DEFINATELY a Survivor thing.
"You cannot grab the top with your hands and your feet must be on the line."
Oh. Okay. I was gonna say 'just wrap your feet around the pole' but you can't do that.
"Sounds easy."
"For you, yes, cause you're small."
But she's a child, wouldn't that make her less capable of endurance than Ellie and Alec?
How are you already slipping? We just started!
I say that like I would do better. I probably wouldn't.
NO MIRIAM
"You're much lighter than me. Do you think you can last longer?"
Oh you're not slipping and trusting Ellie, are you?
You're a dumbass.
"But unfortunately, I can't have us winning this."
YOU DUMBASS.
Does Ellie have my forgiveness for this???
Um...
That's a debate. First you apologize for the death threat. THEN we'll talk.
"What if they can't agree?"
"In that case, you and Ellie would go to one last challenge to decide who gets eliminated."
Oh really?
Is that what we're gonna do?
...or is Fiore gonna ditch Alec's ass? Did I call it?
"I choose Ellie. And I won't change my mind."
Okay.
"Well... I..."
Moment of truth.
She's gonna ditch him.
"Alec... I really liked you, and that's dangerous, because feelings are for weak people."
OH.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH.
"I vote to take Ellie to the final."
Tumblr media
I. FUCKING. CALLED IT.
😂
GET FUCKED, ALEC!!!!! GET! FUCKED!!!!!
"But after all I've done?! I protected you this whole game! I helped you win the zombie apocalypse challenge, saved your life in the cave, covered up your plans so no one would suspect you're a PSYCHOPATH, and you STILL eliminate me?!"
THAT'S ON YOU, YOU DUMBASS.
WHY WOULD YOU TRUST HER?!?! SHE'S A PSYCHOPATH! YOU KNEW THIS. YOU SHOULD'VE SEEN IT COMING.
"Yes, thanks for all that, but I don't need you anymore."
👏😂👏
SHE DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOU.
WHAT DID I SAY?!
Tumblr media
Yeah, she cares about literally nobody.
She WILL ditch these guys on the bus the moment she has the chance.
And she's gonna show no remorse doing it.
And when that happens I'm gonna be HOWLING.
WELL HERE I AM.
SHE DITCHED HIM, NO REMORSE, AND I AM HOWLING.
AWOOOOOOOOOOOO
I CALLED THIS.
"Oh come on Alec, out of everybody, you're the last one who should be talking about feeling betrayed."
Tumblr media
GET. HIS. ASS.
"This doesn't concern you. Keep it to yourself, Ellie."
You betrayed her three times. She DOES get a right to say that!
See, THIS is a good moment of Ellie ROASTING someone who fucking DESERVES IT.
"Your parents were right about you. You are a mistake."
"Oh. I know. And I don't care. Oh, and I bet you'd know a lot about making mistakes."
AWOOOOOOOOOOOO
I do not feel bad for Alec at all. Let's be real. HE DESERVED THIS.
YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE PUT YOUR FATE IN THE HANDS OF THIS PSYCHOPATHIC CHILD. THAT IS ON YOU.
GOODBYE, SIR.
3rd Place
Oh yay, the demon child wins...
This is where Miriam goes.
YEAH THIS IS WHERE MIRIAM GOES
THEY'RE NOT GONNA MAKE IT
AW, I'M SORRY MIRIAM. I WAS ROUTING FOR YOU.
"Tom... I... I can't go any..."

"Wait... I need help!"
Wait what's happening?
"Oh... my heart..."

"I can smell that million bucks calling to me."
OH

IS THIS A VILLAIN WIN?!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-
OH THANK GOD.

I MEAN, IT'S BAD THAT SHE CRASHED IN FIRE, BUT THANK GOD SHE DIDN'T CROSS THE FINISH LINE...

Cut for LENGTHY talk about PTSD, abuse, domestic violence, dissociation and so on.
(I hope you are well-fed Uke. You still need to tell me which bit you want me to write a short fic about for you. XD)
1. The hardest part of the freeze/fawn response, too, is when you want to act but you physically can’t. Then there’s the fact that even if you know something is wrong you can’t help but still love them.
You kind of see this with Commodus where Apollo knows Commodus fucked up, but side note: (1b?) Commodus had so many red flags in his flash back to when they were together that, god or no, I think he would have wound up straight up abusing Apollo if they’d stayed together after he was crowned Emperor. Like that sort of anger, Apollo having a history of self-hatred and self destruction, plus a fawn/freeze response to trauma? Apollo was a loooot better off needing to murder the guy down the line than staying in a relationship with him. He would have been so much more fucked up.
6. I mean, I’m not sure how 100% true the myth is in the context of PJO considering Apollo points out the one in Marsyas isn’t true, but in the stories Python was chasing down Leto while she was still pregnant with Artemis and Apollo and, in some versions, even after Artemis was born but before Apollo could be several days later. Then the very first thing he does when he’s barely a week old is go after Python. This man was basically already born traumatized and desperately wanting to protect his mother and sister and, judging by Trials of Apollo, it stuck into his adulthood.
In the context of PJO, I like to headcanon it WASN’T Hera who sent Python after Leto and the twins.
In the context of Flowers For Apollo, his and Artemis’s stuffies are so old there is none of the original material anymore with how often those things have been repaired, patched over, and fixed.
7. There’s also some notes in the “Guide to Apollo-speak” in the books about how he raised the msues so the marriage vow could have also been “LET ME MAKE ANY EXCUSE SO I DO NOT HAVE TO MARRY LADIES I SEE AS MY DAUGHTERS!” which is fun to write into fic, too. Apollo took on his mother’s mantle of “ultimate baby-sitter” with how many kids he’s raised that aren’t his. XD
10. I mean, he explicitly says in the books he’s never felt at home there and he doesn’t have a real home. Which means he’s either an extreme hoarder or extremely utilitarian. I just headcanon COMFY BED because everyone deserves the comfiest of beds for their needs.
11. It’s also where a lot of dissociation can happen. I’m speaking from my own experience here, but when I’m having these sort of panic episodes I can hear noise is being made when someone is speaking to me, but I can’t parse out what someone is actually saying and it’s a struggle to understand while my brain is also screaming NOT SAFE NOT SAFE NOT SAFE even though things are okay. You get things done and it’s simultaneously the longest period of your life but also the shortest.
14. I like to picture them as each other’s ride or die. For all we know Apollo was having another dissociative nap on a beach in The Titan’s Curse but the second Artemis pinged him he was up and dressed and leaping out of the Sun Chariot with no questions asked and Artemis would do the same for him.
14b. This reminds me on my now-infamous-among-my-friends-Spreadsheet-of-Writing-Projects, one of them is Apollo is powerless after the Sun goes down, just based on my first impression of him in Titan’s Curse. That’s gonna be fun to explore once I’m done with the five million other projects on the Spreadsheet.
16. Depression and PTSD can dull the senses like that, which makes a person really sensory seeking.
17. He is not okay. The only person on that whole mountain who is even vaguely “okay” is Hestia. One day I will go on about generational in the books, but I am not in the headspace to discuss that at this time. But the tl;dr is EVERYONE ON THAT MOUNTAIN NEEDS THERAPY AND HAS SOME KIND OF PTSD.
18. It’s more… one of Apollo’s previous masters abused him and enslaved him and since Percy refused godhood I have no doubt Apollo saw it as “this is literally the safest option I could possibly find.” I mean, you had Nero positioning Meg so he could basically enslave Apollo and then Meg went “….my dummy now!”
Percy: /SLAMS DOOR IN FACE, literally does not leave him on the side of the road and take Meg to Camp Half-Blood without him is his own mother would be disappointed.
Percy: /only likes Apollo after he delivers some of his mom’s fresh-baked cookies
Hey guys I'm in need of food and nourishment again. Send me all your apollo ptsd/cptsd headcanons.

bit of a rant
I definitely agree with your issues towards Edwina's behaviour towards Kate - their relationship deserved and needed better writing, especially with how close Simone and Charithra got close/really cared about the sister relationship.
But some people do use that as an excuse to perpetuate racism/misogyny, painting Kate as the better woman because she doesn't do all the frills and pink and naivety that Edwina likes. Like, I loved them both because they were so different, learning into different, valid versions of femininity.
Can we just let brown girls be themselves without turning into a comp?? (That's for the p*lin stans who try to use their 'like of Edwina/Charithra to be racist/misogynistic towards Simone/Kate)
Yes I get what you're saying and regardless of characterization or bad writing you'll always come across people who'll use this as an excuse to be racist and/or misogynistic which is inexcusable. I'm not an show!Edwina fan but I've seen plenty of takes that take it too far in order to villainize Edwina (ie absolving Anthony, a grown man who knowingly pursued Edwina while having feelings for her sister, of all responsibility for what he did to her and cutting Edwina 0 slack for being charmed by a handsome viscount when she's literally a teenager)
Personally the criticism I've seen towards Edwina by Kate fans hasn't been about her being different than Kate in that she's more naive/traditionally feminine etc but because of her behaviour towards Kate. Of course each of them should be allowed to be her own person and that doesn't make one better or worse than the other... But the reason many of us felt that Kate was the better woman is that the sisterly love felt extremely one sided. Every action of Kate's through s02 stems from her love for Edwina, while I didn't really feel that Edwina felt the same for her sister. Bad writing plays a role of course because we're first presented to an Edwina who repeatedly tells Kate she's in love with Anthony and wants to marry him and a Kate who tries to discourage her because she thinks her baby sister should marry someone who'll love her....and then in episode 6 we jump to an alternate reality where Kate pushed Edwina to Anthony and “forced” her own dream on her sister!
In general I didn't find the show reflected what we were told by the cast (the “soulmate” bond between the Sharma sisters) was there when it comes to Edwina...and Charithra’s comments about how E should have gone Jack the Ripper on K left a bad taste in my mouth tbh because it felt like she legitimised blaming Kate for Anthony's actions.
I don't believe things are beyond repair, they can easily do a 180 and give the audience the relationship the Sharmas deserve (forgetting all about the bs told off screen by CVD about Edwina not attending Kate's wedding, having Edwina be protective of Kate, apologizing for her harsh words etc) I just don't have any hope in Shondaland because they've showed us too many times how little they value female relationships

Daisuke and Ken’s dynamic, and what Ken does for Daisuke in return
Tumblr media
Everyone in the main 02 cast can be said to be a little surface-deceptive in some way, and so, even with Daisuke and Ken as the relationship at the forefront of 02′s story, there’s still more going on behind it than first glance would initially make you suspect. It’s all too easy to just take the surface reading and decide that Daisuke is some kind of saint whom Ken is singularly dependent on for his happiness (which would really be quite the unhealthy relationship), or, worse, shove them into the stereotypical BL tropes just because they’re the two at the front, even though the story practically went out of its way to depict them as unusual characters who don’t fit into those kinds of boxes as easily.
Even though it wasn’t stated outright in words, Ken did a lot for Daisuke in return, and there’s a lot of layers to their relationship to each other both in the series and in going forward after it.
What Daisuke does for Ken
That Daisuke and Ken have very “complementary” personalities goes without saying, but this applies to both their surface demeanors and what lies beneath them. Daisuke has an abrasive surface demeanor and a tendency to get defensive, but isn’t actually very assertive at all; on the other hand, Ken is more polite and ostensibly “soft”, but is significantly more assertive than Daisuke is. This also means that, while it would of course be foolhardy to pretend that Ken could easily shrug off all of his trauma, it’s also conversely reductive to shove the two of them into boxes where Ken is a constant crybaby angsting over everything bad that’s happened to him while Daisuke’s the only ray of sunshine who can get him out of it. A lot of Ken’s strength in the series is self-supplied; he of course does end up needing the others’ support at times, but extreme readings like this really don’t give the kid enough credit for how good he is at gritting his teeth and pushing on without anyone prompting him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The initial problem, however, is that Ken is too assertive about the wrong things at first. Like, say, in 02 episode 26, when he assertively says that he’s going to...recklessly chuck himself into an exploding reactor! For the third quarter of the series, Ken deliberately tries to keep his distance from others, and is very clear and open about his reasons why: in his mind, it’s his responsibility, and the others shouldn’t have to be involved. He doesn’t want their friendship, he doesn’t even think he deserves their friendship, and here’s Daisuke going “okay, yeah, but that’s stupid, shut up and let us help you.”
Adventure and 02 have a strong thread of driving it home that “doing things on sheer principle eventually becomes pointless when it gets in the way of being practical” -- and Daisuke, being a simple-minded and “straightforward” person who doesn’t overthink things, is basically there to keep Ken’s focus back on the proper picture. Because yeah, Ken can attempt to do things like frame things in terms of whether he “deserves” all of this, or “whose responsibility” this all is -- but the fact of the matter is that Daisuke and his friends want to do something and help instead of being sitting ducks about it, Ken’s practically not going to be able to do this alone, and, well, that’s the base of their first Jogress in 02 episode 26! Ken says outright that his goal is to do something to help, but then decides that “helping” should involve suicidally chucking himself into an exploding reactor, and Daisuke, hearing out Ken’s troubles, reminds him that him dying there won’t actually help the way Ken wants to help, because it won’t leave him alive to do all of the other things he wants to do and will hurt his family even more just when he was starting to repair things with them -- and as much as this extremely suicidal plan might temporarily spare the others from dying in an explosion, Daisuke would have to live with the guilt of letting Ken go off to die like that, so it won’t make him happy either.
So in other words, while Ken’s trying to sort out his complicated feelings of guilt, shame, and sense of responsibility, Daisuke’s there to keep his head on straight and remind him when he’s about to run himself in mental circles. Ken would have easily spent the rest of the series trying to make up for what he did even without Daisuke’s help, because he’s such a strong believer in “the right thing to do”, but his way of going on about it would have involved him staying in isolation out of a perceived sense of responsibility, endangering himself out of a sense of self-sacrifice, drowning himself in self-blame and feelings of regret, and, eventually, not addressing the very gaping hole in his life that he very much needs emotional support from others right now.
Tumblr media
One thing particularly interesting about the Japanese version of 02 is that, for nearly the entirety of the second half of the series, Ken only refers to Daisuke as “Motomiya”, which is surprising given the fact that he employs given-name basis with the others quite quickly. Ken eventually does commit to “Daisuke” after the series in almost all post-02 material, and this image fits the two so well that pretty much every doujinshi artist has caught onto it despite it not being there all that much in the actual series, but it really took him a while; what gives? (Daisuke himself committed to “Ken” from surname basis “Ichijouji” starting in 02 episode 39.) Well, the important distinction is that Ken dropped the honorific with him from very early on -- meaning that he did want to approach Daisuke with a little bit of casual bluntness in a way beyond the distant respect he treated the others with, but at the time, going straight to buddy-buddy on given name with no honorific at all would have been a bit too much for him, and it comes off as him almost deliberately giving off a sense of distance. Why?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ken didn’t have too much of an opinion on each individual kid in the group until 02 episode 8, when he developed a particular hatred for Daisuke for “ruining his pride” and decided to emotionally torture him a bit. Then, come 02 episode 25, this same kid approached him with no sense of grudge whatsoever, and presents him with a completely different way of seeing things: “whatever you did in the past, you’re clearly trying to help now, which means we’re now on the same side, so we should work together.” It’s pragmatic; it’s extremely pragmatic, and it’s not like Daisuke was working off of blind optimism and trust as much as he observed, very practically, that Ken was clearly trying to do better now and that therefore they should work together and make use of it. This kind of thought pattern is completely alien to Ken’s “I deserve/don’t deserve this” mentality at this point of this series, and by all standards of his own logic Daisuke should be one of the people who hates him the most, and yet -- nope!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the time of their Jogress, Ken of course understands that Daisuke’s trying very hard to communicate with him, and thus they develop a sort of rapport -- but they’re not quite friends yet at the level of truly being “comfortable” with each other, because most of the second half of the series involved circumstances where Daisuke was helping Ken through a very emotionally hard time. It’s only at the point of the Christmas party in 02 episode 38 when Ken can really think about having these kids as real friends in terms of socializing and not just people who are willing to work with him in his penance journey. It’s enough that Ken’s able to admit that he wants the help of Daisuke in 02 episode 44, when beforehand he’d been trying to keep everyone out of what he’d perceived as his business. And, as Ken’s slowly more exposed to Daisuke’s way of life and its influence on the rest of the group around him, he comes to understand that maybe having a “close friend who can support him” isn’t that bad after all, since it’s not like these friends are just being “open-minded” towards him; they really are there to support him and his actual feelings and welfare, not just “cutting him slack” because he’s helping.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so, with that, once the crisis is resolved and all is said and done, Ken finally truly accepts Daisuke as his friend and moves him up to given-name basis (no honorific!). This is most prominently shown in Diablomon Strikes Back, where their interactions are now removed from the question of Ken’s former actions and his emotional problems, and it turns out, they’re still good friends in the sense that friends are. As in, people who laugh together, hang out together, converse with each other casually; even if they are working together on the same thing for the duration of the movie, it’s not such an emotionally tense situation that you could chalk their interactions up to sheer necessity. With Daisuke’s help, Ken was able to move on from all of his past hangups, and the two of them became able to enjoy the moment of “now” like normal children.
What Ken does for Daisuke
Tumblr media
Daisuke may be simple-minded enough to not have deep-seated concerns that eat at him every day, but that doesn’t change the fact that he was a bit socially maladjusted during the early parts of the series. Namely, being really insecure and prone to getting defensive whenever he felt he was being made fun of. Those kinds of things were what was most likely to get Daisuke to “lash out” at others, because he slips into his worst bouts of these whenever he’s lacking in validation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Daisuke was, undoubtedly, improving over the course of the series, with him slowly starting to become more assertive by the time of 02 episode 20. It’s incorrect to say that Ken was the only person who could truly help him with this; 02 is a series about a group dynamic after all (even if the Jogress pairs are the most instrumental in helping each other), and it would be a pretty unhealthy relationship if one person were so dependent on another to even remotely function. But starting in 02 episode 22, when the crisis is momentarily resolved and everyone’s not sure what to do, Daisuke’s feeling of being third wheeled by Takeru and Hikari shoots up right at the moment everyone’s feeling a bit lacking in purpose. Two episodes later, Miyako immediately stages an intervention to help keep his mind off of things, and she’s arguably even the most comfortable with him at this point in time.
It’s not that Daisuke isn’t improving, nor that his friends aren’t trying to help, but, well...emotionally sensitive as Miyako can be, she’s also a bit all over the place herself and sometimes needs restraining; Hikari may be assertive, but she’s pretty obviously apprehensive about shutting Daisuke down too bluntly, and Takeru being so hard to read and evasive about everything means that Daisuke can’t really tell what he’s thinking or understand his intentions; Iori is younger and is restraining himself, so he still won’t cross certain lines with Daisuke. So as you can see, they’re all doing their best, and they’re not doing a terrible job of it either; hell, the rest of the series involves them maturing into people who can better interact with and support each other, so their own relationships with Daisuke are likely to improve even well after the series ends. It’s just that, especially at this point in the series, there’s definitely room for an extra person to fill a certain niche that’s got a gaping void here, begging for someone who’s assertive and put-together enough to regularly keep Daisuke in check, yet also willing to be properly straightforward with him to the extent that he doesn’t have to feel insecure about their intentions. Hmm, who could that be?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although “the priority of reaching out to Ken” eventually becomes enough of a distraction that it certainly takes Daisuke’s mind off potentially feeling insecure, as we start to see more “casual” interactions between Daisuke and Ken, we see that Ken actually fills in a lot of the gaps that had been so sorely missing in this group dynamic for a while. Forward-thinking as he is, Daisuke’s simple-minded way of going at things has its drawbacks in that he’s not very smart or good at thinking, but Ken is the opposite, being intellectually analytical and much more thoughtful overall, and since Daisuke is the kind of person who defers to others when they’re better than him at something, Ken being right next to him means that he can give him a hand in making important decisions he can’t by himself. This is especially so in Diablomon Strikes Back, when Ken’s role is largely keeping an eye on Daisuke and making sure he’s not a loose cannon -- something he’s very capable of doing -- but also simply being there as a springboard whom Daisuke can comfortably approach and talk to, since Ken is such a mild-mannered, straightforward person who won’t set off his overly defensive tendencies as easily.
Tumblr media
That doesn’t mean that Ken is completely above teasing him, of course -- a lot of post-02 material in fact makes sure you understand that he’s not just some soft-hearted saint and can be quite the snarker when he wants, since his increased comfort level with Daisuke means he’s now able to poke at him here and there, even doing something as mean as dumping all of the Christmas shopping on him (the character songs and other related in-character material lie in questionably canonical territory, but that kind of punchline is not unreasonable to imagine given their respective personalities). But, overall, he sets the right tone for Daisuke to have a friend he’s able to be around regularly and receive support from, and to fill in that niche of his casual interactions so that Daisuke can have some more solid grounding in his life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s also a testament to how much Ken himself had changed in terms of becoming the kind of person who could handle Daisuke like this. When the two of them first “met” in 02 episode 8, while Ken was still fully under the influence of the Dark Seed, even if we were to put the part about him being the Kaiser aside, this sort of person would never be able to become a good friend to Daisuke. This episode had Daisuke put him on a pedestal -- someone he’ll never be able to be as good as, whom he looks up to as an “idol”, much like the way Daisuke has a tendency to instinctively put himself down in uplifting others. Thus, it was a negative relationship for both of them; Ken being put on a pedestal that ultimately made him uncomfortable, and Daisuke contributing to putting him there in the first place, and taking it extra personally when that pedestal was shattered. But then, Daisuke himself (and, ultimately, the rest of the group) became able to treat Ken like the “normal person” he wanted to be, with no pedestals, simply considering him as a friend with his own feelings and needs; as a result, being this sort of “normal person” making friends through his true personality and desire to support others meant paved the way for him becoming the one person who was best equipped to deal with the very difficult-to-handle Daisuke.
Tumblr media
Incidentally, in terms of Kizuna: considering how 02 was such a series about everyone becoming people who could fundamentally interact and communicate better with others, it stands to reason that everyone’s relationships with each other would uniformly improve even after the events of 02, and you can see better interactions between everyone that go beyond just the Jogress pairs. Ken’s clearly able to interact with more of the people in the group in a much more casual manner than he did in 02 itself, and it’s made an important point in the drama CD that Daisuke took everyone’s incidental advice to heart, not just Ken’s. However, advertising material still prominently features the two as a pair, and although part of this is of course due to marketing, Ken is also the one who gets the final words in extracting his “promise” from Daisuke in the drama CD; the official website also calls special attention to him being the one to accompany Daisuke on his ramen outings, even though the one depicted in the drama CD and movie was planned to involve everyone in the group. There are multiple indications that Daisuke himself has learned to become somewhat less defensive and prone to insecurity compared to himself in 02, and it seems that this was accomplished via Ken still actively putting himself in a role of checking on him and making sure he feels properly supported in all of this.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 19, part one
(Masterpost) (Other Canary Stuff) (Previous Post)
Warning: Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Tumblr media
Chilling in Yiling
We start off with Wei Wuxian hanging out in a busy area of Yiling, which is a really dumb place to pick for a fugitive rendezvous.
Tumblr media
He's wearing a fashionably distressed brown robe, and a woven disguise hat, that makes him invisible to his enemies until the moment he takes it off, kinda like the mask he wears in his second life. Unfortunately he is a polite boi so he takes off the disguise hat when he goes indoors to get a bite to eat, and promptly gets smacked down by Wen Zhuliu.
Tumblr media
Xiao Zhan's stunt double is really good at this wire-pull+table-smash move; this is the second time Wei Wuxian goes crashing through a table (the first one being when Yu Ziyuan was beating him). This time he clutches his now core-less abdomen, in a move we're going to be seeing a lot of, going forward. Abdominal surgery is a bitch. OP can personally attest to this.
Wen Zhuliu provides some comic relief by looking at his hand in puzzlement; he clearly can tell Wei Wuxian has no golden core, but he isn't going to bother telling Wen Chao that.
Tumblr media
Wen Chao gloats and steps on Wei Wuxian's hand while Wei Wuxian stares at his shoe and OP wonders, not for the first time, how they make rubberized zig-zag treads in Ancient Fantasy China.
(more after the cut)
This is all happening in the Yiling Wine house where Wei Wuxian will later share the most important meal of his life, the one in which A-Yuan lays claim to Lan Wangji, ultimately giving LWJ a reason to live long enough for Wei Wuxian to be resurrected. If that doesn’t deserve a good Yelp review, nothing does.
Dream a Little Dream of Me
Tumblr media
While Wei Wuxian gets ready for his big whump scene, Jiang Cheng is dreaming, and looking absolutely breathtaking in this deceptively simple robe, that's made of a really complex fabric, that catches the light all over its surface.  The lighting here is warm and romantic, giving everything a nostalgic glow.
He looks around the courtyard in his dream, and sees Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian come running in the gate carrying kites.
Tumblr media
A child fetching a kite was the first casualty of the Wen attack on Lotus Pier, so this image may already be a little fraught for Jiang Cheng. In this initial image of his family, Jiang Cheng isn't present as a child, but then his junior self comes running up, to be warmly greeted by his mother.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng's reaction to the scene playing out in front of him is not a simple one. We've seen him externally expressing his trauma at the fate of Lotus Pier and his family - his anger and his despair - and this dream shows us his private, interior trauma.
Tumblr media
His body has been repaired by Wei Wuxian and the Wens, but his psyche has not.
Tumblr media
This family interaction can't possibly be one that ever happened. It's too lively, too affectionate, too comfortable. The family he was part of as a young adult was cold, angry, cracked.  Families don't change that much in 10 years, unless there's a major trauma that alters things in a fundamental way.
Even the glimpses we got of his childhood contradict this image. This warm group is not the family of "I sent your dogs away" or "wait in the cold until Jiang Cheng lets you in" or "I won't tell Clan Leader Jiang what happened" or "I'm only 11 but I'm in charge of soup and bedtime already"
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng smiles at the affection he sees enacted in front of him, but quickly moves to grief. When a toxic person dies, you don't just lose the relationship you had with them; you lose the hope for a better relationship. Perhaps Jiang Cheng has always imagined this version of his family; now nothing like it can ever come to be.
The pleasant scene vanishes into nightmare, as his mother starts bleeding from her eyes, ew. This is like Nie Mingjue when he qi deviates, but dream Yu Ziyuan is perfectly chill about it.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng is not perfectly chill about it.
Tumblr media
He turns around to see Lotus Pier burning. When he turns back, his family has been replaced with Wen Zhuliu, who is particularly gleeful as he reaches into Jiang Cheng's chest and melts his core.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng wakes up on the mountain, alone (as far as he knows), and quickly stands and boots up his new golden core.
Tumblr media
It's purple, because of course it is. King. The nightmare is gone and he smiles, maybe for the first time since the attack on the pier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a moment that is probably going to feel really embarrassing in hindsight, he kneels and bows toward the mountaintops to thank Baoshan Sanren, who is totally not there.
Wen Ning, on the other hand, is there, although we only see a little bit of his belt and robe as Jiang Cheng walks off to Yiling to meet his brother.  This entire plotline walks a very weird line in which the audience is told just enough about what’s really happening to be confused, but not surprised.
Do the Whumpty Whump
After some initial roughing up, Wen Chao has his dudes stand Wei Wuxian up so he can question him without actually getting any information out of him at all. They take turns calling each other dogs, with Wei Wuxian saying that when Wen Chao talks he just hears a dog barking. (Of course if he really heard a dog barking he'd be terrified)
Tumblr media
Then he says "isn't that right" to Wang Lingjiao, and Wen Chao gets super pissed; don't disrespect me to my woman.
Tumblr media
He has his minions do a Nancy Kerrigan to Wei Wuxian's knee and then kick him for a while.
Tumblr media
Then they kick the shit out of the camera operator.
Tumblr media
Wen Chao is really not about fighting his own fights.  He also keeps threatening to have Wen Zhuliu melt Wei Wuxian's core, and Wen Zhuliu keeps popping up his hand and then putting it back when Wen Chao changes his mind, which gets more hilarious every time I watch it. Feng Mingjing’s physical embodiment of Wen Zhuliu is endlessly entertaining, even in scenes where he has literally no lines.
I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghost
Wei Wuxian continues to goad Wen Chao, telling him that more torture is good because then he'll die with loads of resentment. He says that after he dies, he will come back as a ferocious ghost, which is...almost exactly what happens, except he stays alive for the ferocious part.
Tumblr media
They go back and forth about the feasibility of this whole haunting plan. Wang Lingjiao is the voice of reason, for once, arguing the "ghosts aren't real and anyway fuck this guy" position.
Wen Chao thinks that he can’t haunt them because of cultivator security hardening procedures soul-calming rituals, but Wei Wuxian wasn't born into a gentry family so didn't have the anti-fierce-ghost treatment that other cultivators get.
Tumblr media
This is the only time in the whole of the show when Wei Wuxian says, himself, that he's the son of a servant. He's using his reputation as a commoner to bolster his threats.
Wei Wuxian is working hard to put on a scary-guy persona, which works pretty well on Wang Lingjiao but not as much on the rest of the group. Three months from this time, however, he will have become the scary, vengeful creature he's currently spitballing about.  He will also become way, way better at torture than the people who are currently mistreating him.
Tumblr media
Wang Lingjiao and Wen Chao go through a whole sequence of ideas about what to do with him. For whatever reason Wang Lingjiao doesn't insist on chopping his arm off even though she's been craving it for ages.
She does gleefully burn his burn some more, causing it to bleed directly into the giant obvious bag he has hanging from his belt leaking resentful energy. Which the Wens do not take away or search.
Tumblr media
Wen Chao, incidentally, starts calling him Wei Ying during this encounter, which is rude of him. Tch.  Finally Wen Chao decides on a plan, which involves sword-flying effects so terrible that no soul can survive them.
Jiang Cheng is looking for Wei Wuxian in town, wearing a woven hat like Wei Wuxian’s.  This...is not a disguise. If you want to be inconspicuous, maybe take that giant piece of silver off of your head.
Tumblr media
He hears random people talking about the Wens being in town, and then he apparently looks up at the sky and sees the Wen dudes flying on their swords with Wei Wuxian, but it looks so ridiculous that Jiang Cheng's mind cannot process what he is seeing.
While they "fly," Wen Chao delivers a massive brick of exposition about the burial mounds, while Wei Wuxian looks genuinely frightened. The VFX of random, undifferentiated mountaintops and clouds do nothing to sell this menace, but the exposition is actually pretty good, creating a real sense of disturbance and threat.
Tumblr media
Then they toss him in, and we go from the terrible VFX of sword flying to a visual effect that they mercifully did really well throughout the show - the black resentment smoke. This time it catches Wei Wuxian and holds him for a few moments, before dropping him the rest of the way to the ground. It also apparently pulls the turtle sword out of his belt bag, but we don't see that part.
They Say That Every Man Must Fall
Having seen Wei Wuxian at his lowest point (so far) and dream Jiang Cheng also in deep distress, we go to the Dafan Wen sibs, who have also reached a breaking point. Because they helped Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, they are traitors to their clan - unquestionably so - and are being punished for it, with Wen Ning having been tortured in addition to being locked up.
Tumblr media
I see my light come shining From the west down to the east Any day now, any day now I shall be released
You know how Lan Xichen successfully argued for Wen-Clan-Member Meng Yao's life and status, because Meng Yao betrayed Wen Ruohan to help them? Even though Meng Yao killed a bunch of Nie guys? Wen Ning and Wen Qing also betrayed Wen Ruohan and helped the Sunshot Campaign, without killing a bunch of guys. They should have been treated as allies by the four other clans, but they got diddly.
I’ve Been Dead Once
We return to Wei Wuxian in the burial grounds, where he's lying on the ground surrounded by resentful energy and by strained, desperate voices calling his name. This whole sequence is remarkable, since it effectively communicates the horror he's experiencing, through little more than Xiao Zhan's face and good sound design.
Tumblr media
I hang around dying to be tortured  You'll never be alone in the bone orchard
The voices call four versions of his name. A variety of voices call him Wei Wuxian, Wei Gongzi, and Shixiong, which (I think) is what the young Jiang disciples would have called him. And in the midst of those voices, Lan Wangji's voice, low and calm, saying "Wei Ying." Upon hearing that Wei Wuxian starts to drag himself up.
Tumblr media
For a show with definitely no zombies in it, they sure do use the visual language of zombie films for Wei Wuxian's first motions after hitting the ground. Starting with twitching fingers, then gradually pulling himself halfway up and crawling, lurching across the ground. Wei Wuxian comes slowly back to life, the very first member of his army of the dead.
Tumblr media
He makes his way across the ground toward the floating turtle sword. Along the way he accidentally grabs the world's most bowlegged thigh bone; the lack of sunshine in the burial mounds puts the skeletons at risk for rickets.  All of the skeletons in the show are exactly what you would expect from the practical effects team that made the demon hand and the animatronic dog.
The turtle sword is roiling with resentful energy, and is talking to Wei Wuxian as he crawls toward it, asking if he wants revenge. And what a coincidence, he DOES want revenge.
Tumblr media
He grabs the sword and plunges it into the ground in an explosion of resentful energy. (Ground: why you gotta take it out on me?)
Tumblr media
The sequence ends with the most compelling, ominous shot of Wei Wuxian's face...a new man.
Soundtrack: 1. I Shall Be Released by Bob Dylan 2. Beyond Belief by Elvis Costello
Writing Prompt: The Day Wei Wuxian arrived, from the POV of a Burial Mounds ghost.

I see we're going ape over buddie and Choices tonight so
Yknow in 2.07, when Shannon comes back and her and Eddie have their first scene together? The argument at the end, after Eddie says it wouldn't be a good idea for her to see Christopher bc she left them, she says she needed him, she needed a husband and a co-parent - and "I needed someone to have my back!"
To which EDDIE says, "I always had your back"
*insert Incredibles "coincidence? I think NOT" gif here*
(Also side note, I do like that the show doesn't try to sugarcoat what Shannon did being messed up, and that Eddie's own actions weren't really the right thing either[thinking about his conversation with Buck where he says he got to pretend he left for a noble cause even tho he was running], and that it was just a sticky situation that neither of them were equipped to handle in any way, and snowballed. I do kind of wish we could've gotten post-divorce Shannon and Eddie and Christopher interactions, figuring out how they fit together, if at all, bc I like those intricate and messy situations but I could see how that might get too close to retreading old ground re: Michael and Athena's divorce. But I do hate how ive seen the fandom like. Seem to oversimplify things with Shannon sometimes? And make her the ultimate villain, and Eddie Did Nothing Wrong, Ever)
Hi Anon!
The decision to have Buck and Eddie's first bonding moment end with "You can have my back any day" and "or, y'know, you could have mine" only to then six episodes later find out that at least a contributing factor to Eddie's marriage dissolving was that he "didn't have her back" is like. Such a galaxy brain chaos move for them to take, honestly. Like?? They could've had the phrasing be literally anything in 2x07 but instead they had it directly echo Buck and Eddie in 2x01. What was the reason? Why did they do this?
As for the rest of your ask:
(gosh this got long and, uh, opinionated. It is Not Pretty below the cut)
One of the things I really liked about Eddie Begins is that we did get to see him at the beginning of his journey in being Chris's dad because it gives us an opportunity to appreciate how amazingly he's grown as a father. Like, he didn't start out as a perfect dad and he was definitely kind of lost in the woods at the beginning there when it came to the whole "how do I parent" thing. And before Eddie Begins, we'd only ever seen the end result of the growth he's gone through, where he really is a fantastic dad whose son is basically his entire reason for being. Before Eddie Begins, we get to hear him say things like "I left first" and "I've failed that kid more times than I can count but I love him enough to never stop trying" but we kinda have to take that on faith? Because we hadn't actually seen him be anything besides a good dad until we saw his Begins episode. (And even then in his begins it's like "area man in his early 20s unsure how to care for small child while also coping with PTSD and a toxic support system" which like. yeah. no shit. there's one hell of a learning curve there)
The thing about Eddie and Shannon as a couple and as parents that always gets to me is that they were so fucking young. We don't know exactly how old Eddie is in the show, but we can guesstimate pretty safely that he's around the same age as Ryan which would make him between 23 and 24 when Chris was born, and it seems reasonable to believe Shannon was around the same age. It's also a pretty common reading in the fandom -- although I'm not sure how much canon support there is for it because we really, really don't know anything about their relationship pre-Christopher unless I'm forgetting something -- that they got married because Shannon got pregnant and that was the Done Thing. And when you're 23-24, baby on the way, freshly married, that is just like. So much. It sure as hell ruined my parents' relationship when they did that exact thing, and then they disliked each other until they were 27 and then they got divorced, and no one was happier than me about it, I have to tell you.
Back to the show, I can only give you my impressions, obviously, but the impression I have always gotten from the whole "I left too" conversation and the context that goes into it and the different behaviours we see exhibited by the characters is that Eddie "left" first and it comes across to me that he was basically an early twenty-something kid running scared from the abstract concept of being a father in general, and then when he was forced home by an honourable discharge, and was confronted with the reality of Christopher, he managed to step the fuck up and become Christopher's dad. It's there in 2x02, right? "Oh, you've got a kid? I love kids!" "I love this one." Eddie doesn't strike me as a Swiss Army Knife all-purpose Dad(tm) the way Bobby is. Eddie is Christopher's dad. (and like, of course, he's obviously moved by kids when he's on a call, we've seen that enough times to know that if there's a child who can even glancingly remind him of Christopher, Eddie's sense of self-preservation goes out the window, and I love that about him as heart-stopping as it can be in practice)
Shannon, on the other hand, didn't run from the idea of being a mother -- at first. When she left, it wasn't from the abstract. She left Chris (and "gave up" on Eddie, thanks Helena). She was not running from a concept, she was running from a reality. I think Shannon is a fascinating character to include in a television show as a side character, because she really isn't a one note character. Like, she was unarguably a bad mother, and from what we saw, she was a questionable romantic partner to have (but as you said, anon, Eddie was also not 100% the best romantic partner when he was with Shannon either; their entire relationship so far as I can tell was built on sexual chemistry which, uh, super does not sustain a relationship), but she also seems to have been a devoted daughter? I mean, yeah, it's entirely possible that her mom being sick was a convenient excuse to bail -- and obviously she didn't come back after her mom died, and didn't, y'know, contact her son or husband in the interim, so yes, I can see that being a valid way to read the situation. I don't think she's the Ultimate Evil, because she strikes me as a very human character in all the ways that people are more often than not really fucking flawed.
But then we get back to the actual break-up scene. The first time I watched it (and second, and third; then the fourth time the person I was watching with was like "I mean, sure, but it could also be read in this light") her "I'm just learning how to be someone's mother" speech really bothered me? Partly because it was the abstraction of it, right? Eddie doesn't like kids, he likes Christopher, and Shannon sort of had the inverse journey there, I guess, where it went from she didn't know how to be Christopher's mother, to she didn't know how to be a mother. And that speech bothered me because it always sounded to me like she was bailing again. She begged Eddie to let her back into Christopher's life (guilt? I guess?) and like, straight up bribed him with sex which was sure a choice, and then decides -- for a second time -- that she's out. It sounded, to me, she was handing Eddie papers and maybe, in a few years, possibly, once she'd had "time" to "figure out how to be someone's mother" she would try again. Just like she had in the interim between leaving when Christopher was little and the time of season 2.
And like, that could totally be a misunderstanding of the scene and what she was saying. It's what I took away from it, but that could very well be influenced by the fact I was raised by divorced parents and my dad had custody and if you count up all the time I spent with either parent when I was a minor, I was predominantly raised by my father and have had an especially tempestuous relationship with my mother that is mostly (sometimes) repaired now that I'm in my late twenties and have not lived with her since I was sixteen.
Back to the show, and to your comment that the fandom tends to treat Shannon like the Ultimate Evil and act like Eddie Did Nothing Wrong, I mean. Yeah. Fandom as a rule tends to shirk nuance. We're all fools here on the internet sitting in our blue industrial waste container crying about a wee woo show. I personally believe a more nuanced take on that might be that Eddie has shown a great capacity to learn from his mistakes (sometimes to make fun, shiny, new ones, but for the most part, just like ends up doing better the next time) and Shannon did not show that capacity in the time we knew her.
I think, depending on what they did with it, there was potential for an interesting storyline if they'd played through the divorce. I don't think it would've been rehashing ground covered by Michael and Athena's divorce because I can't see Eddie and Shannon having reached a point of amicability and friendship. The only thing we know they had in common was Christopher, and frankly, when you boil it down, the ways they engaged with Christopher as a person were so disparate that -- to me -- it really didn't seem like they had Christopher in common when you get right down to it. But I wouldn't have wanted to see Christopher and Eddie dragged through an ugly divorce process. They deserve better than that.
There's also a conversation to be had about Shannon's blatant ableism towards her own son, but that is extremely not my lane since I am not disabled myself. But even from an outside perspective, basically their entire parking lot conversation in Haunted, uh, haunts me with it's repugnance and the fact that instead of calling her on any of it, Eddie "Chronically touch starved" Diaz's response was to kiss her? Gosh golly do I wish that was one of the mistakes he learned from properly instead of finding a new, shiny version.
ANYWAY this got long, tl;dr (although if you clicked on the read more, you probably read it) version is No, Shannon is not the Ultimate Evil, she's a shitty mom not a demon in a skin suit and a pretty yellow sundress; and No, Eddie is not a flawless human who's never done wrong in his life but holy fuck is he trying and he'd be the first person to tell you he's made mistakes (and often has been); and no, sorry, I don't want to see the divorce storyline play out because we probably would've had to see either Eddie Bashing, Shannon Redemption, or Shannon turning up again like a cardboard cut out of a cartoon villain the way Eva did and I want to be witness to exactly zero of those things.

Debris: speculation and things we know so far about...
Finola
Her mother, Jenna Goldland, died of cancer. Natural causes? Genetics? Debris side effect? All speculative.
Her father, George Jones, was an astrophysicist that allegedly took his life because he couldn't cope with multiple disorienting losses in his life (his wife, his work, his sense of self and purpose) and was revived by debris.
She took her dad's watch after staying with him in the morgue.
She holds Maddox partly responsible for his death, which leaves a certain unresolved tension between her and Bryan since Bryan considers Maddox a mentor just shy of unimpeachable.
Her semi-estranged sister Dee Dee has problems with substance abuse. (1x01)
Despite her claims to not get along well with Dee Dee in episode 2, Finola craves and clearly misses familial connections because she feels so alone. It's a slow and steady burn. Which is why she goes out of her way to repair and protect families for other people. Whether it's talking to Isla in episode 1 about her mother's grief, or trying to break bad news to Caroline about her father in episode 7, episode 4 where she nearly touches Efrain's arm before deciding to reunite him and his family, or episode 3 where she watches from a distance as Nicole and Richard Hegman, a father and daughter separated for years and connected by dreams — that George only ever thought to study in order to solve differential equations— touch hands through glass, reunited. That's why she begs her father to make room for her in episode 8 and why it's such a personal sacrifice to give up a version of her father in episode 10 that tells Finola he loves her.
She and Bryan share an unspoken bond over dealing with grief.
Finola is very go-with-her-gut but not in the same sense as Bryan who is pragmatic, nor her father who is empiric, but an amalgam of pragmatism, data, and a majority largely composed of empathy. She knows how to read and respond to people, and she bases many of her decisions on the human cost. So whereas Bryan trusts his instinct to take split second, impulsive risks where time is the essence, Finola trusts her gut to weigh out the cost overall before taking the decisive risk.
It's unclear as to what she did before MI6 and Orbital. She reports to Priya Ferris, but it's not said how close the professional relationship is.
She grew up in the UK and spent at least part of her childhood in the Isle of Wight. Since joining Orbital, she has a stateside apartment in DC.

Howl's Moving Castle & the Power Narrative Holds Over Reality
Like most 90s borns, my first anime was Pokémon. I watched the first three seasons diligently, and my tooth fairy gifts were always VHSs of memorable episodes. But like most Millennials and even Gen-X before us, my first real entryway to Japanese culture was Hayao Miyazaki. On the tiny TV screen, behind even for 2002, where my mother would watch her TV shows as she worked out, I watched Spirited Away. Chihiro/Sen's coming-of-age story and the movie's numerous themes deserves their own essay, and one I think better bloggers, vloggers and ordinary people have written before me. But after such a masterpiece, I jumped at the chance to see the next Studio Ghibli movie, Howl's Moving Castle. I rushed to the local library to read the book before it aired in the nearby city's bus station mall's small cinema. 18 years later, too nauseous for schoolwork and mooching off of my dad's Netflix account, I decided to rewatch this film. ***Spoiler alert for both book AND film*** The film itself is a staunch anti-war message, released around the same time as the invasion of Iraq, informed by Miyazaki's own childhood in the final years of Imperial Japan and the horrors inflicted on his home country to set the stage of the Cold War. The exposition includes a bombing of Sophie's hometown with...banners. The citizens of Ingary are terrified of the flying machines descending upon their skies, they expect bombs and destruction and untold death and unspeakable horrors. So when they instead get rained down paper pieces with pictures and words we are never privy to, they treat it with suspicion. They refuse to so much as touch them, since it's of the enemy. And the day after, when Ingary soldiers distribute their own country's propaganda banners, they drink it down without a second thought. Again, we are never privy to what they say. Perhaps it was meaningless. Perhaps, to the common contemporary viewer, the content would be incomprehensible. But for me, it got me thinking: What if this was the "enemy" spreading missing posters of their prince? What if this was a warning for the townspeople to evacuate, as they expect to take point there? And if it was, what the hell did it accomplish, outside of everything BUT what it tried to? The people are too scared. They see it as psychological warfare, whether intentional or not, and therefore the papers become a terrorizing presence, whether they were filled with graphic threats or pleas for cooperation, all it ended up doing is scaring the population into a deeper layer of hatred. I personally disagree with the film's apparent message, but I agree with how much of war is the matter of spinning the truth. No character represents a better allegory for spinning the truth than Sophie Hatter, the main character of the movie. The first thing we notice about her is how intricate and colorful all her creations are, while she sticks to a plain hat with minimal detail. We see her displeasure with her own appearance even when trying it on in front of the mirror. She dresses plainly for she thinks herself plain - wearing a mousy dress in both the source book and the film adaption. The book elaborates on this narrative and its subversion: In Ingary, fairytale tropes are accepted as divine truths. Sophie and her sister Lettie have had their mother die as toddlers, so when their father remarried and produced a third sister(briefly referenced in the film), Martha, Sophie and Lettie were doomed to be wicked, hideous stepsisters. But not only did their stepmother raised them as her own, but both all the Hatters were stated to be beautiful, with Lettie in particular having the entire town's male population vying for her affection in both book and film. In fact, the cunning one is the designated "Cinderella", Martha, who uses her guile to warn her half-sisters. See, another trope specific to Ingary was that the firstborn of three siblings will never find their luck - if they ever dare try, they will encounter disaster after misfortune and end up poor and miserable. According to Martha, her mother wanted to enjoy a life of luxury, so she sent Lettie to work in a bakery where she will surely find a man of her liking to start a life with, and shipped her own daughter off to be a magic apprentice far far away from her. Sophie is the only one she kept close, because she knew she buys into the tropes and will make her fortune for her, preferring the safety of her late father's shop to the dangers of the unlucky life of a firstborn. But in both film and book, this blissful avoidance of any exploration is torn away in a chance encounter Sophie has with the notorious wizard Howl. While her sister(s) are terrified for her safety, Sophie has no fear of the 'heart-eating monster' as "he only eats the hearts of beautiful girls", believing her plainness protected her. But oh, how she was wrong. Or was she? In both book and film, the Witch of the Wastes barges into the hat shop. In the book, she seeks Lettie whom Howl is taken with(like literally every man in town) and enters the shop where an overworked Sophie loses her temper at her, and mistaking the hatter for her sister, she curses the girl to become old. In the film, she's explicitly exacting revenge on Sophie, whom Howl is interested in, and follows her and invades her shop after closing time, cursing her to be ninety years old. This is supposed to devastate Sophie - rob her of her youth, beauty and health, ending her life before she started them. But in both versions, Sophie acclimates to the change rather well, constantly noticing the perks of living as an old lady - she can mumble to herself and be seen as normal, she can be assertive and commanding without being inappropriate and/or bossy, and since she has nothing to lose, she might as well go exploring the world, if only to lift the curse. To revisit this as someone who didn’t expect to have the option of growing old, this is an empowering message on its own - growing old is what you make of it. But despite subverting the Witch's narrative, Sophie remains a helpless victim of her own narrative. Book Sophie is explicitly said to be a powerful sorceress unaware of her own powers, even enchanting her hats into the client's shape with her words alone, while in the film it's only implied. But in both versions she Unconsciously Maintains Her Own Curse: She reverts to the eighteen year old in her sleep, or when something silences her insecurities enough. In the film, she's explicitly shown to de-age as she gains confidence in herself under the role of the household maid, going from the frail ninety-year-old into someone who looks and acts as a woman just past middle age - I don't think this is incidental, as many women are at their most confident at that age, when they no longer feel pressured to worry about trivial matters such as beauty and childrearing, and retreat back into the original cursed form when Howl calls her beautiful - a compliment she can never accept. In the book, Howl eventually comes to the conclusion that she likes being old and gives up trying to guide her out of it. The book takes narrative subversion even further. Remember cunning Martha? Turns out, the Hatters didn't conform to their mother's narrative either - Martha was bored by wizardry while Lettie craved it. The two concocted a plan to glamour as one another, which of course the mentor witch saw right though, and preferred Lettie's genuine interest to Martha ghosting the craft. This stings extra once Fanny is shown to be a caring mother who attacks who he thought cursed her stepdaughter - perhaps she fell for the same sort of thinking Sophie did, and wanted her stepdaughter to have the best life possible for someone doomed to fail, thought extroverted Lettie enjoyed the attention and choice of men and wanted Martha to be a powerful, self-sufficient young woman who led a life more glamorous than she did, as someone who lacked magic? That Fanny was a real parent - a well-intentioned woman who completely misjudged her children and their future? Is it possible Martha’s own narrative has poisoned her relationship with her mother, perhaps beyond repair? As for Sophie, in the book she breaks her own curse by breaking the contract between Calcifer and Howl. But the film gives it more nuance - Calcifer and Howl are clearly in a codependent relationship: In both versions Howl gave Calcifer his heart in exchange for magical powers (as well as saving the fallen star's life, depending on your interpretation of the character), but by the time Sophie employs herself at the Castle, Calcifer feels more like a slave than a powerful demon. Howl himself has his own internal struggles, and many online have made convincing cases for BPD being among them. Calcifer is an essential part of his support system. Each one of them believes that if Calcifer isn't fed properly, or gets dunked with water, they'll both die. And once Sophie does so to stop the wizened, depowered Witch of the Wastes from literally being consumed by her obsessive desire for Howl, she too believes to have killed them both with her rash actions. But they live, because Sophie's part in a time loop led her to think otherwise and refuse to give up on them. Within the film’s universe, this ties into Sophie’s innate magical powers talking reality into her perception. But I know real-life, ordinary people who’s own narratives have changed grim fates.  Now, I don’t live in Ingary. I don’t believe the world around me has literal, reality-warping magic. I’m not a spiritual person. But this is precisely why Howl’s Moving Castle appealed to me - because the characters’ thoughts don’t perfectly dictate reality, but the way they act on their perceptions does. I know a man who is alive because his (now ex-)wife changed the narrative of his deathbed to one of optimism and efficacy. When I stopped trying to have my self-image reflected in the eyes of others, I transformed into a more confident, capable person practically overnight. I’m not delusional - I’m well aware of the Dunning-Krueger effect, of how reality exists whether you live in it or not. I’d like to think I live strictly within the boundaries of what is proven beyond reasonable doubt to be real.
But your spin on reality dictates your life. It can dictate parts of the lives of your close ones. But the message isn’t one of just changing your own view of a situation around you to become happy, oh no. Lettie and Martha didn’t just choose to be happy in apprenticeships they had no passion for. Sophie didn’t just relocate to some quaint cottage to live the few years that weren’t stolen from her as an old hermit. They acted to transform the existent reality within their means, but they could only do so because they felt empowered enough to question their life’s narratives.

Emily in Paris episode 3 or it’s still more accurate than American media recent coverture on France.
Ah, I had to write that title. And I am not even talking about American Twitter. But yeah. Feel better. Somewhat I have the impression that this is going to substitute the still a better love story than Twilight in my mind. But, I’m sorry, Stephenie Meyer, I am not here for that but to make a belated, totally improvised, not at all completely planned recap of Episode 3 of Emily in Paris, your favourite Instagram version of the French capital.
Tumblr media
So episode 3 starts with our heroine running, as she usually does every morning. Why this Paris is more empty than the town where I live which has like 25,000 inhabitants? So many questions about where did people go. The case is her boss in Chicago calls. Yes, the one who speaks French and should be now best friends with Sylvie but it’s stuck in Chicago with her pregnancy.
Tumblr media
I know, Madeline, I know. It would be frustrating for me too that the main trait of my personality was I’m pregnant and on my bed. They both exchange about how now that Doug dumped her Emily’s life is full of croissants and sex, when actually is about sex. Also Emily meets street furniture. As does Madeline, too. I guess that’s not the kind of idea she had of meeting French men. Thanks Anne! Hidalgo of course.
Tumblr media
Madeline is sending Emily the corporate commandments for Savoir. Yikes, I thought again, a cultural clash is coming and what are corporate commandments anyway (I don’t know, sounds tacky, I’m just a puzzled European), but for now there are another problems to solve. Emily’s shower breaks, the building manager only speaks French and of course our leading lady is still struggling with understanding it. Also, sidenote: manager building is right with Miss Cooper. Only problems.
Tumblr media
Fortunately Gabriel exists and he helps her to break the language barrier. But this isn’t going to magically repair her shower and so Emily has to wash her hair in one of humanity’s wonders, one apex of civilization, the bidet. It’s supposed to be a bad hair day for her afterwards but... Does she look that different? Well, not for me! Discuss:
Tumblr media
This shows... A character development! At last! Emily is trying to learn French, and even if her beret isn’t going to help in the task, is good to see she’s trying to adapt. Still, she’s overdoing a bit with that Gioconda bag.
Tumblr media
I mean, girl. Relax. In order to improve her knowledge, she tries to trick her teacher - who considers a working place full of French people must be an interesting environment where to study the behaviour of the Emily Cooperius Chicagoensis but refuses the pleasure of her company if there’s not a 50 euros banknote in between. Business is business after all. Cut to Emily reuniting with my adored godess Sylvie, whose elegance and beauty only can be matched with the flag of the twelve stars in the background. Ah, Freude, schöner Götterfunken/ Tochter aus Elysium,/ Wir betreten feuertrunken/ Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Tumblr media
Well, the case is they are going to film the advertisement for De l’Heure today and it’s an important thing Emily keeps her mouth closed and unsmiling because she looks stupid, at least in Sylvie’s opinion. I’d say more scary but well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luc and Julien receive them with the enraged face of every European citizen who just met an aggresive attempt  of being forced into the American Way of Doing Things. Which they refuse naturally. Madeline just sent the corporate commandments and everyone is pissed at nonsense like giving praise in public and critizising in private. But off to filming the spot for the perfume. The location is the Pont d’Alexandre III that has featured in like 20,000 advertisement for fragrances. Here they met Antoine and Emily has the twentieth humiliating experience with languages telling she’s horny out of a sudden when she wanted to mean excited.
Tumblr media
Emily meets the model, a Serbian blonde beauty that doesn’t speak French, that’s her personality trait. Our heroine seems rejoiced to find at least a kindred soul but we won’t have more time with the model, whose task is to walk across the bridge naked - or wearing the perfume, Antoine says - , while surrounded by men in costumes. The campaign Dream of Beauty, in short. Emily’s reaction is this:
Tumblr media
Antoine argues this is meant to represent the woman’s fantasy, to be desired by all these men. Emily doesn’t think this is going to be appreciated by women at the other side of the Atlantic ocean and says the idea is sexists rather than sexy. Filming stop for they to debate, which seems expensive. Stopping, not debating. Without entering on what fantasies are valid or not and who actually pays attention to advertisements for fragrances - I am not one of these people - we don’t get to learn if Emily knows who Cocteau was.
Tumblr media
The following morning the plumber can’t fix Emily’s shower. His gestures are pretty easy to understand, as it’s an universal fact that often the pieces needed to repair are not immediately available. Anyway, Emily asks Gabriel to help her with translation again. She must pay him or something. The thing doesn’t get to be fixed and Emily gets to shower in Gabriel’s appartment.
Tumblr media
Maybe he has a fantasy of some sort here? Who knows. At the office and after her class, Emily’s first conversation of the day with Sylvie goes, as usual, for a rocky start. She has made lost money and time to the company, her boss argues, and on top of that she’s the prude police. The final straw for Emily immediately after that is that someone (called Luc) drew a dick on the Sacred Corporate Commandments. Having forgotten the fact that drawing penises is part of the human nature since the dawn of times, Emily doesn’t take well the profanation. It’s too much so she goes to lunch with Mindy.
Tumblr media
Mindy - who is celebrating a party later and invites her - rolls her eyes at the corporate commandments and more or less say she deserves the hate because she could not expect French people were going to receive that gladly because they are against all. Well, it’s one of their multiple charms. “People like me! That’s my thing!” , Emily argues. Oh my sweet Summer child... Once back at the office, the commercial is as nonsensical as your average perfume commercial. Emily suggests a poll on Twitter to decide if it’s sexy or sexists. Bad or good, they’ll have publicity. Sounds about right?
Tumblr media
One day I want to be Sylvie when she answers, after Emily invited her to Mandy’s party: Sorry, I’m busy. Also when she goes on with a mini the reason you suck moment: “You come to Paris. You walk into my office. You don’t even bother to learn the language. You treat the city like it’s your amusement park”. Apparently Emily can’t wrap her head around the idea of not everyone liking her and that you don’t have why to be friends with your bosses or workmates. Girl, just a civilized relationship with them is enough. Anyway... Emily does invite her, incapable of taking a no for an answer.
Tumblr media
As predictable - don’t say you didn’t predict it - the party is a bit crowded and, leaving aside Mindy, Emily doesn’t know anyone there. Because, Sylvie knowing better, she didn’t show up. Well done Madame. Out of water again, Emily finds an apparently cute boy who engages in a conversation with her. With hand kissing at the balcony at all.
Tumblr media
All it’s very romantic until, when they are strolling the streets and after flirting a bit, Fabien I think was his name - sorry, not checking again - tells her he likes American pussies. This is too much information all of a sudden for Emily - even if it could lead her to learn another the meaning of a new French word, equally related with felines - and storms off to Gabriel’s restaurant. Why is a thing the chef is there, available to serve her a glass of wine, I don’t know, I didn’t write this thing. But finally, finally, FINALLY our heroine says she’s going to stop trying being liked by everyone. Thank you Paris, you inspired some adult realities on Emily’s brain. It’s also a productive night after all because Gabriel says he likes her. So... yay? Since many of you have already seen the complete season, you know that things are... more complicated than that.
Tumblr media
Of course the last three minutes of the episode are reserved for Emily Was Right After All moments. The poll is a success even if the commercial is not universally liked - but as Emily has learn this is not that important anymore -, she takes revenge on Luc bringing a dick shaped bread, or cake - I don’t know exactly what it is - which is a funny and irreverent way to respond him aaaand... finds a present from Antoine on her desk, lingerie from La Perla. Which is, ew, a bit creepy.
Aaaand that was all. I had to rewatch it because it had been eras since I last wrote about this series. I promise to be more disciplined with the next ones. Until then.
P.S. Down with Corporation Commandments.

Cardfight!! Vanguard Extra Story IF 20 things
changing up the formula for the week
12 seconds in and we’re threatening murder, a new record.
What did we do to deserve Miwa and what did he do to deserve the treatment he gets from the writers?
When there are only bits and pieces of his original memories coming through, having the most nightmarish moment be one of them, one could only imagine how unsettling it is for one poor ultra-soft boy. And if it might cause him to sympathize with Aichi’s belief in brief moments, from undeniable proof that engaging in Vanguard has hurt a number of people around them.
Weekly yearning for the relationship between Outside World and IF World to get an explanation rises.
IF continuing with the softest Kai-kun faces, cause of death determined. That is all.
The fact that Morikawa’s dismissal serves towards the plot is startling, but at the same time, in-universe, it’s still baffling why he was chosen as opposed to anyone else. Perhaps because of his role in Aichi’s actively playing the game? But otherwise, drawing a blank.
There is a lot to say about the Kourin/Miwa scene, see below.
Semi-sortof-half-right about the Miwa/Takuto collusion but also see below.
Weekly yearning for the relationship between Outside World and IF World to get an explanation intensifies.
The Dinner Table Scene. Rena.exe has stopped working. See below, I flip the table.
This is the most adorable thing ever and boys, PLEASE.
Miwa picks up the mantle of roasting characters, the KaiMiwa is strong.
Pot. Kettle. Mirror. Bitch?
The choice to have Dragonic Overlord’s Deletion visually mirror its occurrence during the cardfight-based season is a strong choice; due to its haunting Kai-kun since it penetrated the IF illusion, and his facing Ibuki without letting any distress showing, in spit of what he’s seen, it demonstrates just the strength of his character and builds on his being able to take the punches and roll with them thus far.
Everyday, I relate to Kai Toshiki even more.
Very much appreciate Emi chiming in where Ibuki is concerned because though the emphasis is on his relationships with Kai-kun, Miwa and Suiko, their time understanding one another in episode 7 remains a personal favourite thing from the season.
Suiko’s intervention to protect Emi and Shuka; yes, yes, yes! Best big sister doing her thing.
Along the same line of thought; Miwa taking the bullet to save Kai-kun feels a natural conclusion to his role within IF, but also playing upon how he stressed Kai-kun’s happiness was his priority in his cardfight with Neve. His strongest trait through the franchise has been his dedication to his best friend, no matter the cost to himself, and seeing that occur in the literal sense feels as though it was always a case of when, not if. Although with the likely remaining time left in the season and its focus, there won’t be a spotlight shone on it again or for Kai-kun to really convey his feelings about it, it was nice to see and think about through the day after.
Episode 102: the KaiMiwa edition.
All Hail the Overlords and their Realizing.
Kai-kun takes back his other part-time job of literally roasting people with Miwa gone.
Though it’s likely down to how he was recruited into the Sanctuary Knights (and his past being repaired erasing the entire ordeal from his perspective), Ibuki’s lost memories of joining them begs the question of the fate of everyone’s memories once the timeline is fully restored, given it hasn’t been made clear if there are two different versions of characters that exist or their Outside World selves pulled inside and overwritten to fit IF’s continuity. Cases such as Emi, Aichi and Kourin in particular, seeing as Naoki, Shingo and Miwa have thus far retained their memories of IF despite returning Outside.
Not entirely sure why Kourin is so aggravated by the Sanctuary Knights’ numbers thinning when Naoki, Shingo and Miwa felt much more like nuisances to her and it means she’s alone on Aichi’s side. But okay, play cosmic fuckery with your sisters.
IF 21 preview
Rekka sighted. Hopes raised for her re-entering the story properly raised. Hopes realized when the preview caps from Bushi’s Twitter confirm as much
The season that continues its joke of memeing anime deaths.
With the perspective of Kourin’s weekly nightmarish face and the typical use of the angle, eager to see the girls getting the upper-hand over her, as it dawned on me that Naoki and Shingo had weekly stints being the main antagonistic force but Kourin, in essence, is on four and counting. And with the jarring fact that Aichi’s just sitting back, possibly oblivious, possibly not?
The unidentified Sanctuary Knight in the preview had gotten hopes up that Misaki was finally entering the fray but the aforementioned tweet popped that like a Genshin Impact Anemo slime. Rude.
the four breakdowns (for comical effect, it was one Wild call)
Takuto: From what’s been shown of Takuto, one could summise that he’s unable to leave Sanctuary by some force Aichi (or Kourin, with or without using Aichi to do it) has imposed on him, but considering his position, his personality doesn’t quite fit. With the gravity of the situation, particularly when he had pinpointed Aichi as the strongest Psyqualia fighter and (Destiny Conductor) personally input extra restraints to keep him under control, with him being the enemy, it's puzzling how Takuto is so lax. Even more in that he didn’t use Miwa as a means of passing on any message to the other Tatsunagis. While he couldn’t be expected to know Ren and Rekka were dispatched specifically to find him, one would imagine it was natural there would be someone coming and he may have been able to offer anything from within Sanctuary and its populous. But apparently not.
Kourin: To be honest, the way in which Kourin is being handled rubs me the wrong way, and in a different way from Legion Mate (if anything, its the very opposite problem to then in some regards). It appears to be a sentiment spreading among viewers, at least from what have been able to discern. But in regards to this episode alone, she’s proven herself atrocious at her job. Why wander around a public school in her Sanctuary Knight uniform? Why alert Miwa to her being outside the door? Why divulge essentially her entire job description when all he said was her name? Why are you hovering in a public school? Also has no room to talk about Suiko and Ibuki with how she is around Aichi, let alone around the other Sanctuary Knights and playing bodyguard between the two. It feels with each week she becoming even more territorial and possessive of Aichi.
The Dinner Table Scene: This was initially what really stood out as jarring. The scene feels out of place in many regards; from Aichi’s behaviour to its serving no purpose (not when Takuto’s very last line right before it already established they’re two peas in a pod).                  If anything, it strikes as antithetical to IF Aichi until this point; it’s possible to excuse his lack of reacting to Naoki’s removal from the scene in 18 as being kept in the dark to keep him from struggling to process the news, but with the time that’s passed and losing two others, there’s no way in hell he isn’t aware. Yet he isn’t fazed, not even when Vanguard has essentially ripped away people from him and played right into his beliefs.                 The choice of setting is peculiar; was it just for the gag of Ibuki having a biscuit for a meal? (does Kourin get groceries in her uniform too?) To be truthful, it feels like the two could have met elsewhere in the castle — the throne room, Aichi’s quarters, a corridor where the city could be seen through a window with Ibuki’s back to it (or it behind Aichi so Ibuki could watchthe view past him) — whether Kourin was involved or not, but additionally, Aichi’s acceptance of Ibuki (and in spite of their past and the Deletion, which hazard a guess he remembers in full) simply doesn’t feel coherent. With how vicious they were to one another, even with the dust settling and them both moving on plus Ibuki’s role in IF thus far, wouldn’t it make sense that there would be some tension between them? The scene as a whole encapsulated some of the concerns that had at points during the season, though it’s redeemed itself with some. But where Aichi is concerned, I worry greatly it’s much like Legion Mate where it feels they don’t know what to do with him and are putting off him making a move personally until the end, drawing out Kourin and the new element of fuckery with characters’ pasts.                    Don’t want to get down on this season, it’s got its highs and lows like any other, but the episode in particular was concerning and this scene was the pinnacle of those feelings. It could sweep those worries aside with a great episode (for like the fourth time because it keeps coming back strong when alarm bells ring).
The Pacing: Courtney initially mentioned the episode feeling rushed and when sitting down and thinking it over, have to say that agree. Assuming IF is running a tight schedule with OverDress around the corner, it probably wouldn’t have had the time, but it may have benefitted from the episode being drawn across two. It would have allowed time for Kai-kun and Suiko to try and grapple with Ibuki turning coat, as well as draw out the tension of his being on the enemy’s side, the rapid resolution takes away the threat that has been made to Suiko in her own predicament, and Miwa could have been allowed more time to fully flesh out his actions thus far, as well as anything else that his meeting with Takuto could have provided. Though we’re all well familiar with him, there could have been more glmpses into the unique friendship he has with IF Kai-kun and how it might have contrasted their Outside World’s selves’.
Probably debunked super-fast again but will dream:
Misaki’s absence due to her being Aichi’s Sanctuary Knight secret weapon:
Stemmed from the glimpse of the Sanctuary Knight in the preview and the hype that it might have been Misaki’s re-introduction to the story, given her disappearance since epi 8, even when Kamui returned and Shin filled in her gimmick at Card Capital in epi 16. With the emphasis on Miyaji in Reboot, her lack of presence has been particularly strange, with not so much as a passing mention other than her appearance in the ED. Judging by Kourin and Aichi alone appearing in the preview, it feels safe to say she, Naoki and Shingo won’t be a part of the illusion being forced upon Suiko, prolonging this. Maybe Izumi is simply busy with other work and reading too much into it, but dreamt up a theory for the heck of it.
Whether to recruit the Miyaji Cardfight Club as a whole or in response to identifying Kourin’s apparent independent agenda, Aichi brought Misaki aboard, keeping her a secret from even Kourin and the other Sanctuary Knights. With Kourin overstepping her boundaries and their numbers withering, Aichi’s patience runs out and Misaki is revealed, usurping Kourin’s place by Aichi’s side and delivering a devastating blow to her, who has been fiercely loyal to him but recognizes how far gone he has been driven. Misaki’s appearance is coupled with her verbally tearing into Kourin and dealing her comeuppance (which honestly, she really deserves and has for some time now), Aichi may or may not be there so that the sight of himself and Misaki continuing on without her twists the knife.
It would also echo the interactions between the Psyqualia Zombie Aichi and Misaki, with Kourin watching on helplessly with Naoki and Shingo. Just thought it’d be a neat call-back.

The Umbrella Academy, S2
I was pretty underwhelmed by the first season of The Umbrella Academy, and if it weren’t high summer with hardly any new TV to be seen, I might not have bothered with the second one. But to my surprise, season 2 of The Umbrella Academy is a massive - and, to my eyes, deliberate - improvement on the first. It’s not great TV by any stretch, but it’s engaging and fun to watch, and you find yourself caring about the characters and wanting to follow along with their story, all things that the dour first season failed to achieve.
My fundamental problem with the first season of The Umbrella Academy is that the show failed to convince me that its core family was worth saving. The basic premise of the show - seven superpowered children raised by an abusive tyrant who saw them purely as instruments to be deployed, and played psychological games intended to grind down their independence and prevent any chance of their feeling a stronger loyalty to one another than to him - is obviously a rich and evocative one (albeit also one that requires a depth and complexity of writing that very few superhero shows evince). But the premise of the first season - the surviving Hargreeves children, reunited at their father’s funeral, have to find a way to overcome their differences and move past their difficult upbringing or the world will literally end - kept bumping up against the simple fact that I didn’t want this family to endure. The Hargreeves were so mean to one another, and seemed to have so little affection for each other, that I couldn’t make myself believe they wouldn’t be better off just going their separate ways.
The show itself seemed to realize this, because it ended the first season with the Hargreeves’ dysfunction and inability to honestly address how badly they’d mistreated one another ultimately being the cause of the apocalypse, and with the siblings deciding that their only possible course of action was to reset their lives and rebuild their relationships from the ground up. It was the show tacitly admitting that the Hargreeves family was unsalvageable, and while that’s a bold storytelling choice, the writing just wasn’t there to support it. I finished the first season feeling rather fatigued with both the story and the characters, and uninterested in watching them relive their lives.
The second season feels like a soft reboot of that premise. The trip through time on which the first season ended is retconned - instead of sending their consciousnesses back to their childhood selves, the Hargreeves instead end up as their own adult versions in the early 1960s. The apocalypse they fled 2019 to avoid and were hoping to prevent by reliving their childhoods and repairing their relationships from first principles is essentially forgotten. Instead the Hargreeves focus on preventing a different, new apocalypse scheduled for November 25th 1963, and once they succeed at that, 2019 is altered in unspecified ways that prevent the end of the world from happening.
Most importantly, the Hargreeves suddenly feel like a family. A dysfunctional family, to be sure, whose members have to figure out how to relate to one another now that the abuser who shaped and poisoned their relationships is finally gone. But there is a suddenly a lot of affection between the siblings, even if most of it is expressed through teasing and needling at one another’s weaknesses. In S1, the Hargreeves felt like people who genuinely had no interest in knowing one another. In S2, they feel like people who don’t know how to relate to each other, but want to figure it out.
You see this in a lot of other things that the second season does to respond to frequently-voiced complaints about the first season. In S1, everyone hated how domineering Luther was and how badly he treated Vanya, so almost the first thing he does in S2 is apologize to her for his failings as a brother, and acknowledge that a large portion of the fault for her breakdown falls on him. Everyone was a bit weirded out by the Luther/Alison ship, so it gets barely any play in S1 (though with a bone thrown to the shippers right at the end). Everyone was charmed by Klaus and Diego, so they both get major storylines (and Diego, in particular, is softened and made more vulnerable, the better to take advantage of David Castañeda’s charisma). Everyone wanted more of Ben, so he becomes more vocal and even gets to interact with characters besides Klaus. Everyone got tired of Alison namechecking a daughter that we had no intrest in, so she barely comes up even though Alison is not only separated from her by a distance of sixty years, but last saw her in a world that was being destroyed by a meteor impact. And everyone came away from the first season saying “no way Vanya is straight”, and lo, she is not straight.
It’s an approach that you see in other Netflix shows - Stranger Things, in particular, is practically defined by its responsiveness to audience complaints, with each season overcorrecting in the direction of whatever reaction was most loudly expressed over the previous one. Ideally, you’d want showrunners to have a strong enough sense of their characters, story, and world that they don’t need the audience to function as a cowriter, but in the case of The Umbrella Academy, these changes are mostly to the good. I might have liked the darker story the show seemed to be telling in the first season, about a group of abused children who genuinely don’t like each other but also can’t relate to anyone outside of their family, but the writing wasn’t there for it. The lighter, softer version of The Umbrella Academy delivered by S2 actually works, so the show should stick with it.
It certainly helps that the second season shoulders several topics that I wouldn’t have expected the show to be able to address with any amount of grace. I have to admit that I cringed when I realized that Alison, trapped in the South in the early 60s, had joined the civil rights movement, because superhero stories do not have a great track record dealing with social justice, much less real-world movements. But the handling of this issue ends up being smarter and more effective than I could ever have hoped. It’s still a side-story to the main event of preventing the end of the world, but in the scenes and episodes that do place it front and center, the show is unflinching. The depiction of the lunch counter protest that Alison and her group organize, and of the vicious hostility they encounter for such a small, simple demand, is unsparing. It establishes both the depth of the hatred and violence that the protest arouses, and the impossibility of resisting “peacefully” against a system the views any assertion of your humanity as an act of violence.
I was also a bit concerned over the placement of Alison, in particular, at the center of a story like this. Obviously, as the only black member of the Hargreeves family, her experience in the 1960s would be unique, but she’s also a character who has been established as being too powerful for her own good, and having abused her power in order to dehumanize others. Placing her in a situation where she is being dehumanized because of her race felt like creating a fruitless tension, where Alison might feel reluctant to use her powers despite the fact that she is all-but powerless against the greater system of white supremacy. But again, the season manages to thread the needle, showing both the allure and the limitations of Alison’s mind control abiliites in the context of Jim Crow. I didn’t love the implication that Alison would almost immediately start misusing her powers once she decided to use them to open doors that racism had closed to her, but the show also makes it clear that her anger is justified, and her targets deserving.
By the same token, I heaved a great sigh when the season introduced Harlan and I realized that he was neuroatypical, because it felt almost inevitable that some aspect of the strangeness that follows the Hargreeves around would result in him being “cured”. But that didn’t happen! The season treats Harlan like a valuable and loved person who doesn’t need to become more “normal” for his life to be worth living. And though he does end up needing to be cured, it’s not of his autism, but of whatever Vanya does to him when she saves his life. I kept expecting the the moment when Harlan would turn to his mother and start speaking, and the fact that the season kept refusing to go there feels almost miraculous.
So yeah, the whole thing feels like a breath of fresh air, and as if the people at the helm are thinking a lot more deeply about their story, what works in it and what needs to be changed for it to work, than I would have said at the end of the first season. It’s still not an amazing story (part of the reason we’re able to spend so much time on subplots like Vanya’s romance with Sissy, Klaus’s cult adventures, Alison’s activism, or Diego and his conflicted relationship with Lila, is that the spine of the season is fairly perfunctory) but it does enough with the characters that I found myself genuinely interested in their relationships and eager to see how they would develop. I’m not used to shows rebuilding themselves like this, and it’s refreshing to see that even in the streaming era, that can still happen.

Some Thoughts on Kevin, Sophie, Symbols, and the Mysterious  Fiancée
Episode 4x12 was a really interesting addition to the Kevin/Sophie story because I think there are multiple ways to interpret it, and I think how you interpret it depends on which flashback and corresponding symbol you take to be most important.
In the present day, you have Kevin going to Sophie’s mom’s funeral. But the greater significance of this is left mostly ambiguous. Is this an episode about a rekindling romance? About finding closure? Something else? But then you also have three flashbacks: Kevin’s childhood looking for the mobile, Kevin and Sophie the night Jack died, and Kevin and Sophie visiting town for Rebecca’s birthday.
Young Kevin and the Sheep Mobile  This plot line is seemingly the least connected. It’s all about a very young Kevin not being able to sheep without his sheep mobile, while the other three focus on the deaths of parents and on Kevin and Sophie’s relationship.  The key point of connection seems to be Jack’s line to Kevin at the end of arc, about how the sheep are gone, but he can sleep with the stuffed tiger because “just because you loved something once doesn’t mean you can’t love something new”.  Applied to the main story line, it seems that Sophie is sheep mobile, and the message is that even though Kevin loved her and that was real and important, he can’t have her back and he has to find someone new to love. If you interpret the episode by this flashback and symbol, it’s about how Kevin needs to move on and find a new love, saying that him falling for someone new does not diminish what he felt for Sophie.
Teen Kevin and Good Will Hunting This one, which shows Kevin and Sophie during the night leading up to Jack’s death (what Kevin calls the last night of his childhood) has the clear connection to the present story by being related to the death of his father, just as the present is about the death of Sophie’s mother. But all of it takes place before Kevin learns about Jack’s death. So even though that forms the point of connection, and it draws the parallel between them helping each other through those events, that’s not really what it’s about. It’s more about Good Will Hunting, which is teased early in the episode in the present and then ambiguously referenced several times throughout, before reaching a resolution back in the present.  In this symbol, Kevin and Sophie watched Good Will Hunting together but left before the end of the movie, and they both agreed to never watch the ending, instead making it a game between them to come with different endings of their own because the real ending could never be better than what they come up with. So the game demonstrates their ongoing connection and their history together. But in the end of the episode they watch the ending together and agree that the actual ending is better than anything they could have come up with.  So it could be that the ending of the movie symbolizes that, even though they both never really wanted to close the door on this picture of their relationship, when they do they discover something even better- moving on from each other could open them up to an ending better than what they could have imagined with each other.  OR it might not be that straightforward of a symbol. Because the movie is also linked to as Kevin put it, the last day of his childhood, and they watch the ending in the place where he found out that Jack died. He uses that to talk to Sophie about her going back to the coffee shop where she learned about her mom. So it could be that watching the ending of the movie, represents not trying to stay locked in the past before the bad things happened, but being willing to take the scary step of healing and moving forward. If that is more of the interpretation, then it could be about Kevin and Sophie moving on from each other, or it could be about letting go of the old stages of who they were together in order to embrace a new ending together, different from the ones they imagined for so long, but maybe better.
Young Adult Kevin and the Ring  Then there’s the story of Kevin asking Claire for her mother’s ring to give to Sophie.  There are two main takeaways in this story. One is Claire’s relationship to Kevin. The point they emphasized was that Claire always believed in Kevin, always believed he’d make it, always told him to never settle. The second is the story of the ring, that Claire’s father bought it for her mother, but her mother refused to take it until he got back from the war, telling him to use it as a reason to come back to her, a symbol of hope. It’s a story about waiting. And a story about hope. But Claire won’t give Kevin the ring because the relationship is new and they’re young: they haven’t had to wait for each other, they haven’t had to persevere or hold on to hope. They haven’t been tested. Reflecting back from the present, Kevin believes that Claire wouldn’t give him the ring because she knew he’d mess things up with Sophie. And maybe she did, but overall that wasn’t the impression we were given of Claire’s relationship with Kevin. It was about her telling him to keep on going because one day he’d get there, and one day he’d have the thing he was aiming. It was about Claire believing in Kevin. So it would seem strange to end that arc on a note of “but she knew he’d mess up this thing and not be able to repair it”.  So at the end of the flashback, Kevin does not get the ring, and at the end of the present story line Kevin and Sophie go their separate ways (as they should, her cheating on/leaving her fiance with him because of the way grief heightened her emotions would not have been good, no matter who you want to be together, and Kevin even warned her off any action with him by pointing out the effect grief can have on people). So Sophie is still with her fiance and Kevin slept with Madison.  But, also we ended Sophie’s scenes with her staring at her grandmother’s ring. The ring she’s always wanted and never got. By my estimation, her fiance can’t be the one to give her the ring as resolution to that story. There’s a couple reasons for this. First, he’s not a character. He’s never even really had any lines. I can’t think of this name. If he were to give Sophie the ring, we would never see that happen. It would have to happen off screen and maybe be communicated to Kevin at some point after the fact. Second, a big point is made about how he didn’t really know Claire. And the emphasis with the ring was that it was Claire’s to give to someone for Sophie. So her intentions before dying could be honored in giving the ring, but she didn’t know the fiance and so he can’t be in keeping with Claire’s intentions and he can’t fully appreciate the import of the ring. Third, by all accounts that we’ve seen, Sophie and her fiance have never had to wait for each other in any real sense. They can’t live out what the ring represents. So if the fiance can’t give the ring to Sophie in a meaningful way, and this really is the end for Kevin and Sophie, then the ring was introduced and ends within the same episode with the point just being that this thing that meant so much to Sophie, she never gets. Which is not a satisfying conclusion, especially given that, Sophie didn’t do anything wrong to mess up her relationship with Kevin.  But, the ring is about waiting and hope. So if the ring is meant to symbolize two people willing to wait for each other and have hope that they’ll find a way to be together again, then that would fit really well with a story line about Kevin and Sophie finding their way back together again. Sophie looking at the ring again would be a sign to the audience, that her story is not over. It would become about Kevin and Sophie waiting for many years in order for Kevin to finally be the person that she needs him to be. And Kevin even addresses that idea when he talks to Claire’s grave– that he feels like he’s finally ready to be with Sophie, he just missed his chance. It would contrast with the young impatient Kevin who married Sophie on an impulse. It would contrast with the version of Kevin he described to Madison, who’s never broken up with because he always cuts and runs first. And in making these contrasts would emphasize Kevin’s growth as he comes to deserve the ring. And it would fit with the overall theme of Claire’s relationship to Kevin– she believed that he would make it eventually, even if she thought he might mess up along the way, and she didn’t want him to settle, she just wanted him to wait.  So the way I see it, the ring represents that all Kevin and Sophie need is a little bit of time and they will find their way back together.
The Other Love Interests If you lean more toward one of the first two symbols and towards an interpretation that this episode is about Kevin and Sophie finding closure and moving on to better endings and new loves, then that leaves the question: who is Kevin’s fiancee?  Zoe seems pretty clearly out of the running, because she doesn’t want children (and I don’t think they should change that) and because Kevin’s child in the flashforward was not mixed race. Cassidy is still a possibility, but her story to this point has been directed toward her fixing her relationship with her husband, not finding new love. And some cast indications seem to mean that she’s not returning. Lizzy is married, made a really poor first impression, and the actress says that the character “won’t return anytime soon”.  Of the characters we’ve already met, that leaves Madison, who of course is the most prominent at the moment because the episode ends with her and Kevin sleeping together. Does this action indicate that they are the new main pairing? I’m not convinced.  For one thing, up until this point Madison’s primary role has always been comic relief. Though you’re meant to like her and at times sympathize with her highs and lows, and she has had some serious moments, she is still generally portrayed as a somewhat ridiculous character, a little clueless, a little over the top. Even some of her serious moments (like the points where she and Kate form a true connection) to some degree ask you to laugh at Madison (though not all do, as was pointed out to me in regards to a story line I forgot). This seems unlikely to be the character they choose as Kevin’s (presumably) endgame romance (For those of you thinking ‘well Toby is a comic character and Kate married him– in their comedic relief moments, you’re asked to laugh with Toby, you’re asked to laugh at Madison). It wouldn’t be impossible for them to shift Madison into being a character you could take more seriously, but I would expect that to come before pushing her and Kevin together, and no such lead up happened. Even if they were to do it now, there are only six episodes left in the season (and we’re supposed to have our fiancee answer by then), which isn’t a lot of time left to build up Madison’s character as well as her relationship with Kevin to the point where there could be a proposal (unless we’re looking at more of a… shotgun wedding).  Then there’s the actual nature of Kevin and Madison’s interaction in 4x12. We do see Kevin and Madison share a nice moment of relating to and encouraging one another. But the actual progression of that into more than just a friendly interaction between a man and his sister’s friend into a hookup is completely skipped over. If this is the beginning of the next big romance, they would seem like a crucial progression.  And then there’s Kevin’s reaction to the hookup. When he talks to Randall he talks about “being in the middle of a whole thing” and it being “a hell of a week” and when they get Kate on the call they end up chanting “Sad three” and all deciding to get away for a while and go to the cabin. Which overall doesn’t indicate a very positive reaction to what happened with Madison, especially given that it’s paralleled with Randall’s anxiety pushing him toward a panic attack, and Kate’s marriage falling apart.  We can also apply Kevin’s words to Sophie to this situation. He warns her that she may have latched onto him at the funeral because grief makes you grab on to whatever’s near. Kevin at the end of the episode is grieving, partly for Claire who was important to him, and partly for his lost relationship with Sophie, which he feels is currently hopeless.  So it seems, more than him and Madison forming a meaningful connection over their mostly innocuous break-ups conversation, that he was in pain and grabbed on to the first thing that was near.
Conclusion 4x12 was meant to leave Kevin’s future ambiguous, to send mixed signals and keep you guessing. However, I’m inclined to think that it did more to open doors with Sophie than to close them. I don’t see them leaving that character behind yet, especially because they just introduced Claire and the ring as a new aspect of it, and because the cheating and the divorce have still not been explored, which is one of the biggest holes left in the This Is Us timeline.  I think that while they threw out some stories about closure and moving on, the most prominent symbol in the episode was the ring, and that was left unresolved, pointing more toward a reunion for Kevin and Sophie than away from it.  What’s more, they’ve promised answers about who the fiancee is by the end of the season (or the very beginning of next season, but I think it was this season). They’re rapidly running out of time. The show has dedicated a lot of time to the Kevin/Sophie relationship. They dedicated a lot of time to the Kevin/Zoe relationship. Even Kevin/Cassidy and Kevin/Sloane got a fair amount of development. If Madison (or a new character) is Kevin’s fiancee then it seems strange to have Kevin end up married to and having a kid with someone whose relationship with him got significantly less development than any other relationship of his has gotten. The only way I see that making sense is if the relationship itself is short lived and is significant mainly for giving Kevin his son. That’s possible but a large part of Kevin’s motivations have been about him wanting to be in love and have a wife, so I don’t see them teasing a fiancee for half a season and then having him end up single. Not because a kid can’t be a satisfying family life on its own, but because for four seasons we’ve been shown that Kevin wants a wife.  I could see the story going a number of ways, but if I had to guess, I’d say that 4x12 is the beginning of Sophie and Kevin getting back together.

An Explanation of Why Louis and Violet are Both Terrific Love Interests [2/5]
Tumblr media
+Why both romantic routes are not only amazing but better than other games I’ve personally played in the past.
+Why some people are idiots and get off on picking stupid fights.
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5
Romantic Option #2: Warren Graham
Tumblr media
Uhm.... Warren’s a person in this story, too.
He, uh, he’s really nerdy. He does some science shit. He has a huge crush on Max which is made very obvious by the everything about him. Uh..... he took a fist to the face and got a black eye because he was helping Max, uhm.... he took a picture that was pretty important to the plot... um....
I literally can’t remember anything else about him.
I couldn’t even remember his last name. I had to look up his wiki to remember anything about him.
That’s how forgettable he is.
Hell, fans of the game took his character and made him more interesting in fanart and fanfics than he ever was in the game! I remember more about THAT version of him than I do about the him in the canon of the game!
I gave you that whole bit about Chloe from memory. That’s how much more fleshed out and important she is within the game than Warren is. Everything I’m about to talk about here if from reading his wiki and remembering things that way.
We meet Warren and find out that he’s into nerdy shit like Max. He’s also obviously into her and does a shit job at hiding that fact, but then Nathan comes over and beats the shit out of him because plot.
When I first played, it was pretty obvious that Warren would be romanceable, and truth be told, I liked Warren. He was fine! He’s dorky and weird, but I thought he and Max could potentially be a cute couple, and so does the rest of the school since you can’t talk to any of the girls without them implying that Warren likes Max.
I kept waiting for Warren to be important, but it never really came! I mean, you could talk to him and help him with a science experiment [in which he fucking blows up] and you text him a lot. Oh, and you can go to a Planet of the Apes marathon with him which you never actually get to go to, but the game constantly reminds you that you’re going because Warren won’t shut up about it.
Let’s see, he also sends you instructions on how to build a bomb so that you can break into the principal’s office, and then he beats Nathan up, and then he shows up and takes a picture of him and Max that ends up being important in the final episode and then.... he doesn’t do much else.
Well, okay, he does talk about Max’s powers a little bit in ep5 and you can give him a smooch or hug him or disregard him completely.
And that’s about it.
........Wait a minute.
A boy with boyband hair who has extensive chemistry knowledge, knows how to make bombs, uses said bombs for pranks, gets fucked up by one of the antagonists AND was a throwaway character that the writers threw in there to further the plot along but doesn’t really do much so the fandom took him and made him better than the game ever gave him credit for...?
Tumblr media
.....Welp, that’s a whole thing that I’m not gonna get into. One post at a time, folks.
ANYWAY
Back on topic, Warren’s a romanceable character, apparently. You can agree to go on a date with him and smooch him. You can tell people you think he’s cute. It’s fine.
With all that about these two choices in mind, compare Warren to Chloe.
There is no comparison because Warren’s “romance route” is... is nothing! It’s a whole lot of little things that don’t amount to much! With Chloe, Max has all this chemistry and you spend 90% of the game with her! You forget that Warren exists until you get another text from him or another character brings him up!
You know what Warren feels like? He feels like a character that the writers threw in because they were worried that players wouldn’t want a tragic wlw love story between two best friends, who reconnect and fall in love over the course of five episodes.
Which, fair, because people are idiots.
Could they have made Warren more important? Sure, but like with Skybound and Telltale, they didn’t have an unlimited budget to pack everything they wanted into the game to make it better, and that’s not just limited to the relationships, that’s clear in the endings we got. And I’m sure that some Warren stans will read this and retaliate and tell me that he’s just as important than Chloe, I just don’t understand because I’m a shithead.
And maybe that’s true, but look me in the eye and tell me that if you took Warren out of the game, it would have drastically changed the story beyond repair.
Now, what does all this mean?
Compare Chloe and Warren to Louis and Violet as far as love interests go and how they were handled.
In TWDG, Louis and Violet are fairly even.
In LIS, Chloe and Warren aren’t even in the same universe. It doesn’t matter if you like Warren more, or if you like Chloe more, Chloe got more time and effort put into her story and romance than Warren did.
Think of it like this: Chloe is at a 90% and Warren 10%.  Louis is at 48% and Violet’s at 52%, and that’s depending on how you look at it.
If TWDG did the routes like this, then Violet would’ve been way more important, would’ve have ten times as many scenes with Clementine, and if you took her out of the story, the whole thing falls apart because she’d be 90% of the plot, while Louis over here would’ve been used as background noise and plot convenience once or twice. Sure, we would’ve gotten to know him a little bit, but not nearly anything substantial and not nearly as much in comparison.
That’s what we could’ve had, okay? The writers could’ve given us a single love interest and said: “We want you to pick this person... but we’ll also throw in this other person just in case y’all are homophobic/racist/fucking stupid/whatever.”
In conclusion: We were blessed with Louis and Violet who each got an arc and love story, both of which are fairly even.
Have I made my point yet? No? You need more examples? Fine. I’ll give you another alternative to what we could’ve had, or rather, what we could’ve missed out on.
[Note: I want to add that I haven’t played Life is Strange 2, but I know that its playable character is also bisexual and can choose between a boy and a girl to romance, but I can’t comment on how well it did because I’ve yet to play it.]
[persona 4 and the relationships you can’t have]
This one time I tried to romance my partner but he was too busy trying to convince everyone that he’s straight to even notice.
Tumblr media
Persona 4 is a game that came out in 2008, then re-released with new content in 2012 under the name Persona 4: Golden. The game follows your nameable protagonist who has just moved in with their uncle and cousin. During his year-long stay, he becomes involved in investigating mysterious murders while harnessing the power of summoning Persona.
Great game, one that took over my life for about a year. Great characters, great voice acting, great story, great antagonists, and great romance and romanceable characters.
While the romance is more of a side thing depending on if you decide to take that route with one of your social links, it’s still nice to have special moments with them to break away from all the TV murder and whatnot.
And you have several great options to choose from! You’ve got Chie, Yukiko, Rise, Naoto, and then you’ve got several other girls around the school that you can start a thing with, but they’re not as important as those core four.
Each of the girls has an incredibly well-written story and share a deep bond with you, the protagonist. So, the reason I’m putting this example here is that the choice between all these great girls is super hard, right?
Wrong.
Because when I played the damn game, I didn’t romance any of them. Not because I didn’t like them or because I didn’t want my character to have a romance, but because the asshole I WANTED to romance wasn’t an option.
Because I’m not allowed to romance the dudes.
And that includes this dude.
Yosuke Hanamura
Tumblr media
Remember that pin I mentioned about how great it is that Clementine’s bi because not only does it give us well-deserved representation but also allows the player to romance both girls and boys?
The Protagonist of Persona 4 is not bisexual.
I can only romance the girls because he is straight.
But not really, because MY Protagonist pursued and sought after Yosuke despite the fact that the game would not let me romance him. Which is bullshit, because he clearly feels the same way, and no, that’s not my crazy brain making shit up.
My entire playthrough was pretty much
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I won’t get into it because Persona is a long game and a complicated one to even try and explain to someone who hasn’t played it so that’s another rant for another day, but know this:
Yosuke was the perfect opportunity to tell the story of a boy dealing with internal homophobia, falling in love with his best friend [PARTNER] after the girl he cared about died horrifically and faced his shadow learned to accept himself and his insecurities. The potential here was wasted.
There are a shit ton more layers to that, but on the barest of bare-bones, that’s what I wanted.
Hell, according to a bunch of people, Yosuke was going to be a romantic option, but they scrapped it! Insult to injury, I’ll say!
Comparing this to TWDG, you could argue that Clementine only gets to romance Louis and Violet, but some wanted to romance Mitch, Aasim, Brody, ect.
Fair enough, but what I’m saying is this:
It sucked that I couldn’t romance the person I wanted to when I played Persona, and it still sucks every time I play a game and my person of desire is unattainable. This isn’t just Persona, that’s just the first game that comes to mind when I think about characters I always wanted a romance, but that includes all the other missed opportunities from other games, as well.
The Final Season is different.
The writers of TFS could’ve said, “Oh you want to romance Louis/Violet? Oh no, sorry, we were gonna do it but we changed our minds! But, don’t worry, we’ll leave hint after hint that they have feelings for you but you can’t actively pursue them. Allow us to tease you with the wonderful romance that could’ve been! Midnight piano lessons! Conversations under the stars! Lots of smooches! You’ll never see it in canon!”
Or, they could’ve only given us one of them, but that’s the topic of the next game.
In conclusion: They didn’t have to give us Louis and Violet or make them romanceable. If you want Clementine to have a relationship with them, you have the option to do that, which is something you can’t say with other games.

Battle of the Miraculous (Love Eater and Miracle Queen) Analysis (Few Translations included)
“Some people may have their problems, but at the end everything will be okay.”
—Marinette Dupain-Cheng (Miracle Queen Monologue)
(Disclaimer: Budgets and animation production play a huge part in how episodes are made and released . . . but this time it was straight up the network’s choice and a bad one :| Also I’m fully aware Chat Blanc and Felix may answer a few extra things, but for now I’ll just talk about what I’ve seen.)
I’ll be going over the finale in the Topics:
Hesitations
Relationships
Beginning of the End
The Future? (Season 4 Talk)
I rewatched the episode with subs I could fully read and understand so I’m ready to talk about it now. Let's go. . .
FYI: I’m gonna be mainly dissecting Miracle Queen because A LOT happened here that I HAVE TO let out.
Hesitations
In Heart Hunter/ Love Eater we got a good consensus of how every character is doing. To summarize, we know Luka has deeply fallen for Marinette and constantly thinks about the song that is her. Kagami is much closer to Adrien and is open about her feelings to him. Luka and Kagami are also now officially good friends with their supposed love rival. Really everyone is getting along PERFECTLY. . . . But then Kagami and Adrien get much closer and all Marinette can do is just let the one she loves go.
Tumblr media
In Miracle Queen, Marinette cries to Luka and admits in her monologue that nothing is going and if anything things are painful. . . but that it’s nice to have someone that’s there for her when she need it. . .  this someone being Luka. Before the bees attack, Marinette makes a move to move on by wanting to hear his finalized song, but Luka questions an important question:
“You’re still thinking about Adrien?”
Meanwhile, Adrien breaks away from the kiss with an “Oh! Uh, it’s my first time, I’m not ready!” excuse even though it’s clear he’s unsure about advancing things with Kagami. But then her version of the important question is:
“But when will you be ready, Adrien? . .  Your hesitation hurts.”
*queue the bees* So as of this point, Adrien and Marinette have finally faced their actual obstacle in terms of romance: Their HESITATIONS.
This entire season, we’ve had instances in which Adrienette has had the thought of wanting to be something more (either through a crush or Plagg’s perseuations), but there was always the thought of “But there’s Luka/Kagami. . .” Ikari Gozen shed this for Marinette, Stormy Weather 2.0 shed this for Adrien. . .
Anyways Chloe calls forward people who have held a miraculous and exposes them (both in identity and diss lol) btw she did say Luka looked “kinda cute”
Ladybug and Chat Noir find each other confused as to how things went south so fast and Chat just asks “What did Fu tell you?”, to which Ladybug basically answers “Nothing” and has break down admitting she accidentally lead Hawkmoth to Fu.
Relationships
Tumblr media
This moment right here. . . it's IMPORTANT.
Chat sees Ladybug vulnerable and consoles her letting her know to focus on saving Fu and not to worry more on the rest mistakes. Ladybug thanks him and the two hug. . . but like ACTUALLY hug.
I’m not talking someone hugging the other in attempt to save the other from harm, but an actual genuine friendly hug. Chat Noir isn’t being flirty or making advances, and Ladybug isn't annoyed or pushing Chat away. Their relationship as heroes is no longer just partners. . . but officially CLOSE FRIENDS.
Tumblr media
Moving on, they kick ass, get the likely to be former wielders’ miraculous back and face off with Chloe. To summarize, she tells Ladybug that she’s the real enemy because she doesn’t trust her and goes on to equip all the miraculous. She tries to use them all but all the kwamis basically told her to go fuck herself in the form of “You don’t even know our commands.”
Tumblr media
Oh, but what’s this? ANOTHER advancement in the Ladynoir relationship. Ladybug turns to Chat all vulnerable once more, and he picks her back up. This is the first time in a WHILE (since Origins) that Ladybug had confided in Chat with her vulnerability and fears of failure TWICE in ONE day. Don’t forget about this for next season.
The Beginning of the End
Tumblr media
After telling Ladybug that she now has all the keys and knowledge about the miraculous, Fu then decides its time. No not the grim kind of time, but the time to finally pass on the torch to Ladybug. He officially denounces his role as guardian, which renders all inactive miraculous useless. (I’m actually not certain but it IS what I noticed considering the active miraculous were still working but the inactive ones became empty jewelry shells as the kwamis got transferred into a brand new box for Ladybug. I’m sure S4 will have the answers here.) Hawkmoth is literally disappointed and leaves with a weaker Mayura.
Chloe angrily tells Ladybug she just wants to be Queen Bee and be the REAL MAIN HERO, to which Ladybug simply answers “I’m sorry, but I can’t let you do that, Chloe.” Chloe then throws a tantrum saying “FINE! I am not your fan anymore. I will go live with my mom because you don’t even deserve to breath the same air as ME.” and runs away.
Oh yeah, Chat lost Hawkmoth and Mayura :D. . . . *high five*
ANYWAYS, Ladybug and Chat Noir go to vibe check on Fu while Gabriel vibe checks Nathalie. One is alive and well and the other is alive and. . . yeah.
Tumblr media
KEEP IN MIND, NATHALIE NOW HAS ACQUIRED THE INFO SHE NEEDED FROM FU’S BELONGINGS TO REPAIR THE PEACOCK MIRACULOUS. DO NOT FORGET THIS FOR NEXT SEASON.
Back to Fu, he wakes up but. . . ya GUESSED IT (or didn't)  . . . lost his memory along with his duties as guardian and this marks the END of an era. . .
ML LORE: THE GUARDIAN RULE IS THAT YOU ERASE YOUR MEMORIES OF KNOWING ABOUT THE TRUE POWER OF THE MIRACULOUS ONCE YOU DENOUNCE YOUR ROLE IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE IDENTITY OF THE current? WIELDERS. EVEN THE USE “MIRACULOUS LADYBUG” DOES NOT UNDO THIS.
DEFINITELY DO NOT FORGET THIS MOVING FORWARD IN THE SERIES (but mainly if you really like lore or just want to use this as a fic tool :3)
Techincally, someone did die this episode, but it was the person we all once knew as Master Fu. Now it is just Wang Fu. He returns Ladybug’s “lost key” thinking she dropped it? and then marks the a new beginning.
Chloe returns to expect her mom to be getting ready to leave, but finds her parents finally happy and in love. . . I’m actually really happy this happened. Chloe needs a loving home and if this helps her in anyways, ABOUT TIME.
“As you start to get older, you start to understand that life doesn’t always give you what you thought it would. I wanted to tell you this in person, Marinette, but if you are reading this it is because I’ve already lost all my memories. Do not be afraid, you haven’t lost all of me completely. Like I told you in the beginning of the letter, losses are a part of life, but this isn’t important. The only thing that’s important is if you’ve won (?) or not. That is the key to be able to accept changes as they come on your own. To be able to accept everything as a whole even when you feel life hasn’t given you enough. The real gift, is life itself.” —Fu
no I’m not crying, you are
Tumblr media
After retrieving Master Fu’s leftover gifts for Marinette, she takes him to see Marianne to their new home (assuming), to whom Wang Fu has met for the first time but is already fully in love with. Marinette gives them a final parting gift, to where his last words to her are:
“Thank you, young lady. I’ll never forget you.”
okay, okay, maybe a TINY tear has left my eye. . .
Now to our final scene of the season. Adrien and Marinette are closer friends and nothing is distant between the two, They’re even so comfortable small talk is like second nature to them . . . they’ve also both finally faced their own hesitations and decided to give the person in front of them a shot for and for all: Luka and Kagami.
Tumblr media
“The real gift, is life itself.”
okay okay I’m SOBBING aghhhHHHHHHHH--
Oh and Gabriel seems to have repaired the peacock miraculous 👀
Tumblr media
The Future (?)
Okay, so THAT’S how Season 3 ended. It feels bittersweet, I cried about it when I got home and watched it with real subtitles, but now lets talk about what we can expect to come in Season 4. It’s all guess and theories but I guess here’s mine:
Marinette now fully changed and matured with her new role as guardian, will probably be a lot more calmer with her approaches. The relationships will likely be that Lukanette and Adrigami will try to flourish further as both Adrien and Marinette decided to stop hesitating and going for what’s in front of them. . . but so will Ladynoir.
I’m, for the time being, jumping ship on the theory that Ladybug will fall more in love with Chat, and Chat still being loyal to his lady will equally return the feelings as this happens further. . . but of course their civilian relationships will interfere. . . and idk about you guys but that department looks like it’s going to be interesting.
I may add more later on, but I just needed to get all this out in one post for the finale. I’ll still watch Felix and Chat Blanc cause I’m in denial that yes, this was basically it already . . . But the wounds are still fresh in my soul for this show and it still hurts. . .
.
.
.
.
So yeah . . . Lila Rossi who?
.
Don’t know her. . .
.
and neither did Hawkmoth in that finale 👀 *sips tea*
