Sunset Died - Michael & Peter
Trip for two (Part 2)
Tumblr media
About half an hour has passed since the boys set off. "Do you actually know which way to go?"/ "Of course I do, I know where I saw the rabbits"/ "o.k…. I'll follow you inconspicuously"/ "hahaha. Inconspicuous is probably an understatement, you're the one with the big bag on your back"/ "hehe…you're right".
Tumblr media
Peter was happy to give Michael a little head start. He could tell that it was visibly good for him to get out again. Fresh air, nature… It was something that Michael had only ever been able to enjoy with his father. And of course his thoughts are also very much with him. He recalls the old memories he was able to collect with him. "It's not far now"/ "Okay.,“.
Tumblr media
And Peter also keeps to himself with his thoughts. ("I tried with Holly. But she seems to have noticed that there's something wrong with me… Well, it's not really anything unusual… At school, I often punched him in the nose and felt really sorry afterwards, I don't know what got into me. Now I couldn't do that anymore, I like him far too much. Hnhn, he's got a pretty small butt.“)
Tumblr media
After about 2 hours of walking. "This is it…"/ "Are you sure?"/ "Yes of course, I recognize the fir tree exactly. And there's heather growing there…and somewhere here is a small field with clover, the rabbits like to eat that…"/ "O.k. phew, I have to put my backpack down first…"/ "Back there, where it looks like rock has been removed, that's where you can pitch the tent"/ "mhm, o.k.".
Tumblr media
Peter was glad that he could finally take the backpack off. "uh, man, I'd almost forgotten how heavy that thing can be". Michael could tell he was a little exhausted. "I can carry it on the way back, okay?". Peter laughed softly. "Your narrow back wouldn't be able to take it. The walk was just a bit long. The two days outside now are for resting… It's a really good place"/ "yes, and sheltered from the wind, well, at least from the east"/ "you know your way around the wilderness, don't you?".
Tumblr media
Michael shrugged his shoulders a little. "well, I… I only know what my father taught me". Peter took a few steps towards him again. "and I'm sure you'll learn more the more you're out here. Well, you can still teach me something. At least I already know how to make a fire and put up a tent. But as far as plants and things like that are concerned, I'm out. But at least I can tell the difference between fir trees and birch trees"/ "Birch trees? They're good for firewood"…
Tumblr media
Peter smiled and hugged Michael affectionately. "All right, then I'd suggest you chop down the birch and I'll put up the tent and collect a few stones for the fire pit"/ "o.k.. Have you packed the axe?"/ "Sure, it was the first thing I packed…". Michael looked at him skeptically. "The first ? With what ulterior motive? To chop me up in the forest?". Peter had to laugh, shook his head and kissed him. Then the both got on with their tasks.

my family is lucky enough to own a 26 acre mountain property, log cabin and all. Most people would go up there and think that it is fairly pristine nature. There’s the cabin, and a few dirt roads for 4-wheelers, but the surrounding woods look untouched.
But we actually carefully maintain that nature. We cut down the deadfall. We pull invasive plants. We trim the elderberry bushes. We get more animals than almost anywhere else on the mountain because we put up salt licks and water troughs.
some of these same things are true of national parks. A lot of places that you think of as “untouched wilderness” are influenced heavily by human care and maintenance. And this isn’t a bad thing. We are animals too. In many ways, our ecosystems depend on us to keep them healthy. Many “wild” plants that are useful for food or building materials are actually semi-domesticated because indigenous groups cared for them and encouraged their growth so they do better with human care.
we have a place in nature. We just need to be conscious of our actions.
EDIT: since this post took off, I thought I should add some sources
Also a disclaimer that I am not indigenous or an ecologist. I am putting time and effort into learning, but I am not an expert.

pokémon game plots will forever be some of the wildest things to grasp for me. a bunch of environmentalists dressing up like pirates actually almost drown the world. oh yeah you can also dress up your pikachu in silly outfits and pick berries for them. jeff bezos creates a death laser using gods to try and destroy france. oh yeah you can also participate in cutsy pageants w your pokémon and yassify your poodle. meanwhile, in hawaii, aliens sent by your girlfriend’s abusive mom are trying to kill everything and many of them look like lovecraftian horrors. have fun surfing on manta rays though. meanwhile, in meiji era japan, you have to battle The Devil from The Bible TWICE because this loser who’s been Just There the whole game has religious trauma and wants to fistfight god. everything wants to KILL YOU and you’re getting paid minimum wage for groundbreaking scientific research. GOD from THE BIBLE gives you an iphone -11 reality is BREAKING NOW GO CATCH 20 BIDOOF AND THREE LAKE SPIRITS
