nostalgia blinded catgirl rants about the new dragon quest monsters game

okay i'm dropping dqm dark prince and wanna give my thoughts on it. actually i NEED to give my thoughts on it, i am dying to scream about how much i loved and hated this game. so i'll be blunt, both joker and joker 2 are better than dark prince and it isn't close. the vibe of this game felt much closer to like.. the original monsters remakes on the 3ds than the ds games. the season changing gimmick is terrible. the story is terrible. the lategame dungeons are terrible. the vibes are just off for me idk. i guess i'm biased bc the whole thing of travelling to islands and sometimes finding random events in joker were so neat and i loved that little weirdo monster that you could fuse into all kinds of weird forms and in general the areas and story felt more thought out.. and the hub area was wayyyy better. god, and the characters. i seriously could not stand ANYONE in this game. solitaire bb i miss you xoxo. tournaments were ok, the announcers were fun. i do think dark prince had some positives, like the sweets based areas were really neat, it felt like i was in candyland and i loved it. and as usual the fusing is really fun, it's still the biggest hightlight to me! scouting monsters and fusing them and just discovering all kinds of new ones is a great time. what really drove me away though was i guess the atmosphere and the dungeons. seriously, the dungeons suck BAD. the upper echelon ones have you aimlessly running in circles pressing buttons and shit to alter the dungeon slightly and you have no idea how many times you need to press it and you just keep ending up in the same place and it's the least fun ever- ok god fuck this game actually LOL i had fun with the early - mid game a lot and just fusing monsters and stuff but uhhhh i do wish i just stopped playing after the "bad ending" bc honestly it's a great stopping point bc the game just gets worse from there from both a story and gameplay perspective. the game has some bad performance issues, visually looks way worse than dq11, and in general just feels kind of.. subpar. i feel like as i played i couldn't help but think "wow i wish i was playing monster joker rn" and.. yeah! maybe i'll just go find my old copy of it and play it instead! i don't normally rant like this on here yall know i'm usually only here to rt yuri but like. i HAD to talk about this somewhere. i have rlly mixed feelings on this game but i'm still glad i played it, there were parts i enjoyed for sure and above all else i had a great time fusing monsters! i just hope if they ever make another dqm game they just,, remake monsters joker 1. FAITHFULLY. VERY, VERY FAITHFULLY..... PLEASE. ok gn!

here are some of my fav lina x lilia x rollo concepts if you don't mind me sharing!

lilia is 700 years old and he's been through so much and it took a lot of time for him to change and become the gremlin that he is today. lina is MUCH younger than him, but she also had to go through a lot of horrors. lilia never says that their trauma isn't valid and never says stuff like "well at least you didn't have to fight in a war". he just hopes they can feel a bit lighter when he's around.

i've mentioned before that i imagine lina's unique magic hurting them a lot in exchange for them to do things as good (or better than) as others so yeah, maybe rollo would find lina suspicious at first but then imagine him finding out about what her magic is doing to her and he's like. "SEE. I AM RIGHT. WE HAVE TO SAVE YOU WE HAVE TO GET RID OF MAGIC WE HAVE TO-" and lina is standing there like "sir.. why do you want to save me.."

*sobs* rollo putting a flower in lina's hair while she's sitting lost in thought and comparing her to that flower *CRIES*

oooh i want to know whats up in the revue au! :DD (<- guy who's obsessed w revue but knows a little abt wxs)

bouncing off the walls i am going CRAZY planning this rn! here's the main story section i rewrote:

tsukasa finds a mysterious song called untitled on his phone while preparing for a job interview at phoenix wonderland. upon playing it, the track being a weird ringtone with a picture of a giraffe, he is transported via space-time-breaking elevator to an underground stage, and is greeted by catgirl hatsune miku and her friend the giraffe.

the giraffe details the revue’s purpose: stage girls (or in his case, boys) singing and dancing brilliantly to achieve the ‘top star’ and their dream stage. tsukasa, hungry for recognition on a world-class stage, agrees to join the revue.

he leaves the underground stage and is immediately late for his job interview. joy.

blah blah blah he joins emu at the wonder stage blah blah blah. leaving out the sekai part. tsukasa and emu see rui doing his guerilla show.

surprise. tsukasa gets called to his first revue, and his opponent is rui. tsukasa uses this as an opportunity to try and get rui to join the troupe, and they strike a deal: if tsukasa wins then rui joins (along with a fourth member), and if rui wins then nothing happens and they go about their day. tsukasa wins, but not without a good fight.

stage notes: revue of alchemy (rui v tsukasa)

made to resemble the rooftop

but also there’s a lot of things going on: drones, robot decoys and other unconventional stage directions make it hard for tsukasa to reach rui properly (up until the end, anyway)

rui and nenerobo (aka nene's robot decoy) go to practice the next day. yay.

blah blah blah their first show goes wrong. nene reveals herself and the group splits up due to tsukasa being a dummy and blowing up at her. what joy.

tsukasa faces his next revue against hatsune miku herself. she helps him realise his true feelings about stardom by beating him in the revue.

stage notes: revue of memories (miku v tsukasa)

this serves to replace the scene with the rabbit plushie

the stage is set out similarly to a child’s playset, reflecting tsukasa’s less-polished works from his childhood

the scene changes dramatically depending on the scenario miku wants to depict: e.g. a scene about pirates (in line with the canon scene) makes the stage change to a boat on the waters (and tsukasa has to fight her while the stage is tipping from side to side in the middle of a storm! what joy!)

eventually the stage becomes a hospital room and tsukasa gets to see a re-enaction of an average visit to saki (his sister) when they were younger

as he’s watching, miku takes a chance and takes position zero. tsukasa realises his initial purpose for pursuing an acting career, and thanks miku for the wake-up call.

upon leaving the revue, tsukasa prepares to say sorry to the rest of the gang… but he does it through revues because that’s why i redid the plotline in the first place

stage notes: revue of wonder (tsukasa v emu)

set is made to resemble the theme park: lots of moving platforms as a representative of the ferris wheel, among other things (e.g. trampoline dome, roller coaster)

also emu pulls a mahiru and hops around the other stages (including nene v rui)

tsukasa eventually catches emu on the ferris wheel and that’s when she explains the grandpa thing to him

tsukasa wins

stage notes: revue of secrecy (tsukasa + emu v nene)

made with resemblance to the performance where nene forgot her lines

the revue starts with nenerobo in place of nene, and basically the two just have to chase her around while nene hides in the backstage somewhere

eventually she comes out and fights them

stage notes: revue of loneliness (tsukasa + emu + nene v rui)

similar to revue of alchemy but without the rooftop: instead it has fantasy elements as rui retells his ‘eccentric alchemist’ narrative

kind of runs like a re-live actually… tsukasa jumps on the stage and interrupts the script where rui would have ended/looped the performance

boom. dramatic fight scene. tsukasa dramatically asks rui to rejoin the troupe, which he does (at the expense of his medal).

ta-daaaaaa. peace restored

yeah you still might need to read the canon main story (this is just a copypaste from my notes so far) but yes! things are happening and its still incredibly gay!

and if its not in line with the revue canon let's just say hatsune miku screwed everything up :D

I got through the game on him first in 2020 and even though I don't play on him much anymore he is so so special to me! I think of him as my WOL proper. Last two pics are him and his childhood best friend from the Steppe, Khaidu (who I'm doing a commission of rn!)

Annnd this is U'dhiya Virphi. I made him when I started savage raiding with Davey + my static in 2021! DC travel didn't exist so I had to uh.. start over lol. He was a catboy, but once they released bunnies.. I mean, come on!!! He's very socially inept and brusque, is better at fighting and going on odd adventures than negotiating and talking to people in general. Sometimes I imagine him as a miqote with this face and height, though I think he'd be more muscular than bunboy physiques allow lol. Unlike Aurix he doesn't emote a lot. Like Aurix he hates wearing shirts LOL. I think of Dhiya like a gleaner who absconded from sharlayan back to the sagolii desert and got wrapped up in helping out the WOL.

I wrote (and am writing) things

I’ve been meaning to do this for literally weeks. SO, this one goes out to all like 10 people who follow this tumblr for my writing. I appreciate you and am sure it’s a terribly tedious experience, and have promised myself I will AT LEAST post the stuff I’ve written here. Especially as my ao3 catalog gets, while objectively not that long, far longer than I ever expected. 

I did a couple halloween exchanges; here’s what’s new: 

Mirabelle, a brief original fairy taleish piece I affectionately refer to as “Faeries!!!” and which is, more or less, about faeries. Also tfw you’re a changeling and you’re kind of hot for the human you got switched with at birth.

Oh well, what's life (without a few dragons?), a brief crossover I affectionately refer to as “Dragons!!!” and which is, more or less, about dragons. Charlie Weasley & Daenerys Targaryen.

The company of witches, a Squire’s Tales fanfic I affectionately refer to as “Witches!!!” and which is, more or less, about the way women pass down magic and wisdom through generations (not the first time I’ve hit that topic, either...almost like I have feelings about it). I understand from friends that it’s still a fun read out of context, but it’s mostly a love letter to a deeply obscure children’s arthurian retelling series that was really fucking formative for me growing up. I am proud (tho sad) to say that it is currently the one and only fic in its pairing tag. 

If you ARE one of the ten people following me for writing, you’re probably like “these are not the catgirl and jock I signed up for, wtf,” so I will note that I am very much still writing catradora. Actually, the sheer amount of drafts I have in progress rn is likely why none of them are done - I’m spreading my energy a bit (also, things are just busy, happy November). I can’t promise all these will go all the way, but in my drafts rn you’d find...

...two Squad Goes Intergalactic oneshots, one of which is an outsider pov and the other of which is a Catra character study ft. musings on her canonical string of shitty bosses. 

...a collab project I’m still hype as fuck about. I fucking love weddings.
