After 6 months Buck didn't even know Tommy identified as gay and Tommy didn't know that Buck hated basketball with Lakers tickets as a gift, they definitely were more casual than serious if they clearly had not spent much time getting to know each other

So this of course isn't a defense of bucktommy relationship. I have been critical of their communication style. Like Tommy apparently didn't mention he had been engaged for 6 entire months?! I feel like that's a detail to mention at some point, even if the relationship doesn't mean much to him in the long run.

But just because a couple doesn't have a good communication style doesn't mean they can't be a serious relationship. Some people get married and have kids while not being able to talk to one another honestly. That doesn't mean those relationships were casual. So that's what my take was: you wouldn't consider a future with someone or go to a funeral of someone you don't know because it's important to your partner if it was casual. I stand by my statement. They cared for each other in a way I wouldn't consider casual.

Tommy's exit though... came off very apathetic and it's weird how it appears he can just flip a switch & move on. But I guess that could be reflected in his Abby relationship since he didn't think it was important enough to ever bring up. But also apparently Buck never mentioned Abby himself. Bad communication all around.

Tevan, Buddie, and the Diversity Quota

This is a speculation about the reason behind Tevan's break-up:

9-1-1 show was launched in 2018 using racial & gender diversity to differentiate itself from other procedural shows, However, majority of audience are white cishet men & women, who are probably conservative leaning. Thus, the show's been trying to balance the casts, to make all groups within the audience happy. Most movies & TV shows, whose target market is the general audience, operate in similar manner. They include diversity in their shows to attract liberal-leaning audience, but within a certain quota, to prevent upsetting the conservative-leaning audience.

It seems like the quota of queer diversity is one representation for each queer group per show. For example: Lone Star has one queer couple (Tarlos), one bisexual (Nancy), and one trans (Paul). Other shows like Spartacus, Game of Thrones series, even Grey's Anatomy also seem to maintain one queer couple most of the time. If there are more than one queer couples, the situation is usually temporary.

In 9-1-1, there has been one established queer couple since the beginning: Henren, but the show hadn't had any bi/trans representative yet until Season 7. To attract new audience, Buck came out as bisexual on 7x04. Luckilly, this move garnered positive response from the general audience. Yes, Oliver gave a speech about how humbled and proud he was to play a bisexual character on a national TV channel. But he gave his speech AFTER the rating/viewership number came out, not before.

To draw as many viewers as possible, Tim made Tevan's love story like a romcom, a genre which has been proven to generate massive loyal audience (see Bridgerton and other Shondaland's works). Tommy is also made very likable, and welcomed by the rest of 118 family. This to make the General Audience symphatizes towards Buck and is willing to follow his journey in nursing his brokenheart. The show also put a lot of signs that indicate the possibility of Tevan reunion, to keep audience curious enough with a 'will-they, won't they' trope. How about Tevan shippers? The show expects Tevan shippers to behave like Buddie stans: watching the show religiously week after week, while searching for signs of Tommy's return. The show has been stringing along Buddie stans for 6 years and counting. It seems about to do the same to Tevan shippers. Alas, by saying that Tommy could show up in the future, Tim has dropped the first crumb, which Tevan shippers ate so eagerly.

Does Tim actually wants Tevan to be end game? After the break-up on 8x06, I doubt it. It looks like Tim genuinely likes Lou, but his hands are seemingly tied to the quota: one queer couple for every show. The queer couple spot has been occupied by Henren, that's why Tevan has to break up. And that's why Buddie will never happen.

Our only chance for Tommy return is if RATING/VIEWERSHIP LOW ENOUGH to push the show to pivot.

This is hard to happen if you keep watching via the official channels, live or streaming. Submitting complaints to the show also only worked right after the break-up episode (8x06) on air. Posting comments after 8x07 indicates that you keep watching, even after the show shattered your heart to pieces. Similarly, it's better to refrain using 911 hashtags, except to post critical pieces like this one. You are promoting the show for free, exactly what they have expected. You can use Bucktommy or Tevan hashtags instead.

i think the addiction language is making people a little uncomfortable because we're already on edge. there's been fandom homophobia, the show making a "turned gay" joke, buck not addressing his bisexuality in canon, and #letbuckfuck (which i personally don't think is biphobic i'm just... not a fan), plus people's personal interpretations of what the show has been doing. i don't think there's anything inherently wrong with using addiction as a metaphor, it's just that a lot of factors have been compounding and people are disappointed and feeling vulnerable about everything.

fwiw, my post was actually in response to a buddie post that was tagged as anti-bucktommy but i do get that people are feeling particularly touchy rn. (tho i did see other posts they just didn’t trigger my comment.)

i have my own opinions about the whole buck hasnt said bisexual and that’s Bad thing (i don’t think it’s bad, tbh, i think he still doesn’t have the word bc thus far it’s been Only Tommy and that’s part of the whole hes still got shit to figure out thing - speaking from experience as a 40 year old who came out late in life in my 30s and spent years trying to find the right words and half the time STILL doesn’t know it anything really fits) and i PERSONALLY feel uncomfortable with some of the talk about how if we thinks he’s still figuring shit out were infantilizing him or treating him like a child. sexuality is hard especially when you’re kind of feeling it out as you go and honestly labels aren’t everything. i get it people want the tangible representation but for some of us that IS a person who just kind of needs time to say the actual words and is still trying to figure it out. i do think he’ll get there though and maybe that’s Very Naive of me. but right now i think he’s only thinking about tommy - and honestly i think that’s kind of where he’s always been.

its not surprising that mr im an ally i mean sure ill look at a hot guys ass but that’s normal i’ve only ever really kissed or thought about kissing one man and im hung up on him hasn’t really thought about a label TO ME. i don’t begrudge anyone who feels differently.

no hate to prev they just obviously haven't read the rest of my blog so i thought i'd clear things up

yes, you can multiship. in fact, i encourage it. that post was made because i saw one (1) person say they didn't ship buddie anymore because tommy was "good enough", not because i only ship buddie (i'd love to see some buck/josh action, but that's never happening). since then i've seen more posts along the same lines, so i think the point stands and is even more relevant now.

if you know anything about me, you know i'm a huge advocate for not settling when it comes to queer media. we deserve better than undeveloped story lines. i agree that the bucktommy story line is a big step in buck's coming to terms with his sexuality and who he is as a whole, and in queer media itself. i won't deny that.

however, there are people in this fandom who have gotten so used to having to settle for underdeveloped, rushed, and frankly mediocre storylines when it comes to queer media, because networks are so scared to do anything long term because they'll most likely get canceled (and don't try saying that isn't true, the fact is most queer shows are lucky to get past season one). but now, 911 is breaking the boundaries, and the fandom isn't here to support it. why do you think they announced the greenlight for season eight ahead of 7x04? it was a big middle finger to the current state of queer media.

let buck have his queer storyline separate from eddie. i think it's crucial for his character, that he needs to figure himself out first before he can realize his feelings for eddie. however, don't suddenly hate on buddie when you've been shipping them for years because a half baked character comes through and kisses buck at the first opportunity he has, and trauma response says this is all we'll get.

and yes, tommy really is some dude he's known for two weeks, in comparison to eddie. they literally met at the cruise ship disaster. i guarantee you when tommy showed up at chimney's call buck and eddie were like 'who the fuck is this guy and where's lucy'. also, right now, tommy is still technically the guy that was stealing his best friend from him. the only time before the kiss that they hung out alone was at the air base. just because we've known him longer doesn't mean it isn't true. at this point, buck still has more chemistry with josh, and we haven't seen much of them lately.

anyways, in the future, please take care to do your research on someone before assuming their views on a storyline from one post talking about another one. thanks.
