Another Hinny headcanon request for you!
Which is doing the cooking? Harry or Ginny?
If you ask Harry, he'll tell you he does the cooking.
If you ask Ginny, she'll tell you they cook together.
The reality, you ask? Well...
Neither Harry nor Ginny particularly love cooking. When Harry and Ginny first moved in together, who did the cooking was a point of some contention. Harry would come home tired after a long day at the Ministry, and he would get annoyed that Ginny, who was off season and working non-traditional hours, wouldn't cook. Ginny was offended by this as she thought Harry was trying to get her to do the cooking was because she was the girl. (Ginny had spent most of her youth sneaking out of the Burrow to avoid her mum whenever Molly tried to teach her to cook because she felt this was just her mother encouraging stereotypical gender roles.)
After a few quarrels, they came to an agreement to cook together. When it comes down to it, however, this isn't exactly how it goes...
When he comes home, Ginny is sitting on the sofa, her leg bouncing as she thumbs through the latest edition of the Quibbler. Harry knows she's already read it.
He smiles at her, but only offers a "Hey," before making his way to the bedroom. Ginny bites her lip as she nods to him. Harry smirks to himself as he moves down the corridor. He knows her. She has a story she wants to tell him, and she's struggling to keep it in. She knows him back. Knows he needs a bit of alone time first.
After a busy day at the office, Harry frequently takes this little introvert reprieve when he first comes home, often retreating to a quiet corner of the house to collect his thoughts and re-energise. Ginny tries to respect this, but he can see it annoys her sometimes. After a long day apart, she's dying tell him about her day and chat. And they will. In a bit.
Harry changes out of his work clothes, flops on the bed, and settles in for a half hour with a copy of Seeker Weekly.
When it comes time to cook dinner, Harry emerges and Ginny nearly falls off the sofa in her haste to follow him to the kitchen.
"What's for dinner?" Harry asks, inspecting the larder. He doesn't actually expect a constructive reply.
"I dunno, you pick," says Ginny predictably. She hoists herself up to sit on the counter, her legs swinging. She’s wearing the short shorts he loves. The ones that show off the maximum amount of skin and freckles. "So you know how it was raining today? If you can even call it that. More like misting."
"Was it? Guess I was mostly indoors today. Lemon chicken sound good?"
"Sure. So I told you about that new recruit, right? Stephanie Vaughn?"
"Once or twice," replies Harry, smiling to himself. Ginny's been complaining about Stephanie Vaughn nonstop since she signed on. "Sprouts or asparagus?"
"Is there a difference apart from weird-smelling pee?"
"Sprouts it is." Harry pulls out a bag of sprouts and a few potatoes, setting them on the counter to join the chicken.
"So we've barely started practice and Vaughn starts whining about the rain."
"Uh huh," says Harry as he peeled the potatoes. "Wanna get a pot boiling?"
"Where's the pot?" she says, hopping off the counter.
"In the cupboard where it always is."
"Oh, right." She pulls down the pot and points her wand. "Aguamenti! But like. It's England. What do you expect?" Another prod of the wand and the water is bubbling.
"Come again?"
"Vaughn. Complaining about the rain."
"Oh, right. Yeah. Pretty silly. Seems like it's part of the job for a professional Quidditch player.” Harry scrapes the peeled and quartered potato into the pot and turns his attention to the sprouts.
“Right? Like, you know Quidditch matches don’t get cancelled for hurricanes, let alone a little drizzle. So why do you expect practice to only be in the sunshine?”
“Absolutely,” Harry agrees dutifully. “How do you want your sprouts?”
“There’s more than one way to eat sprouts?”
“Roasted, sounds good,” he decides and reaches for a roasting pan. He drizzles oil over the sprouts and tosses in a pinch of salt. Ginny has resumed her seat on the counter.
“So she’s going on and on about how her hair gets frizzy in the rain.”
“Her hair is what she’s worried about?” A tap of his wand has the oven preheated, and he slides the roasting pan in.
“Her hair,” Ginny confirms, rolling her eyes in disgust. She runs a hand through her own short pixie-cut. She’s long decided this is a far more practical style for flying, and Harry has decided this is a far more practical style for kissing her neck. Both were glad to be in agreement.
Harry turns his attention to the chicken, patting it dry, carefully trimming away the fat, sprinkling it with salt and pepper.
“I swear, I’ve never seen Gwenog turn that colour.” “What colour?”
“Purple,” Ginny sniggers. “I mean, you’re seriously going to complain about your hair getting frizzy to Gwenog? Gwenog who needs to keep her hair in braids twenty-four seven to control it?”
“Can you check to see if the potatoes are done?” Harry prompts.
Without getting off the counter, she snatches a fork from a drawer below her and prods at the potatoes in the pot. “Guess what? If Gwenog can deal with frizzy hair, so can you! What do you reckon, are these ready?” She holds out the fork for Harry to test the potato himself.
“Almost. Still a bit crunchy. Another couple minutes.” He adds a drizzle of oil in the frying pan at the hob. “So does Gwenog hate her too?”
“Totally. I can see she’s regretting her choice. I don’t care that Vaughn flew better in try-outs, she’s such a bad fit for the team. So high maintenance.”
Harry grunts in agreement as he adds the chicken to a satisfying sizzle.
“So then Gwenog tells her to invest in a jar of Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion, practice the Impervius Charm, and while she’s at it, she can do a Silencio Charm and shut the fuck up.” Ginny throws her head back and laughs from her seat on the counter. Harry glances up long enough to shoot her a smile, then flips the chicken and adds a pad of butter, a sprig of time, and a couple slices of lemon. “Guess you kinda had to be there,” she adds, seeing that Harry is too busy draining the potatoes to laugh.
“So, reckon she’s going to last? Vaughn?”
“Merlin, I hope not.” Ginny dips a finger into the newly mashed potatoes to taste them as Harry pulls the sprouts from the oven. “Actually, I’m really hoping she keeps flapping her mouth. Gwenog is this close to sacking her.”
Harry gives a non-committal grunt as he finishes plating and sprinkles some fresh thyme leaves over everything. “Come on. Let’s eat,” he says, handing her a plate.
At the table, Ginny’s mouth is too full for her to say much more for a time. She chews, thoughtfully eyeing the plate as she tastes each component in turn, nodding to herself. “You know what?” she says around a mouthful of sprout. “What?”
“We’re actually pretty good cooks, you know?”
Harry smiles to himself as he cuts another piece of chicken. “Yeah. I guess we are.”

there’s such an attitude among ex-christian atheists that religions just spring up out of the void with no cultural context behind them. like ive heard people say shit like “those (((zionists))) think they own a piece of land bc their book of fairy tales told them so!!!” and they refuse to understand that no, we don’t belong there because of the torah, it’s in the torah because we belong there. because we’re from there. the torah (from a reform perspective) was written by ancient jews in and about the land that they were actively living on at the time. the torah contains instructions for agriculture because the people who lived in the land needed a way to teach their children how to care for it. it contains laws of jurisprudence because those are pretty important to have when you’re trying to run a society. same for the parts that talk about city planning. it contains our national origin story for the same reason that american schools teach kids about the boston tea party. it’s an extremely complex and fascinating text that is the furthest thing from just a “book of fairy tales”
#txt#jumblr#i’ll never forget studying parashat noach one week#and i was discussing it at face value as if it was a real historical event just bc that was the most interesting way for me to approach it#and our clergy associate was like ‘okay but we know this is a fable right?’#that just. *chefs kiss* perfectly encapsulates reform judaism to me#this is also why i cant stand when ppl act like reform jews are somehow less religious#i LOVE torah. i love diving into the text and discussing it w people and exploring the historical context behind the words#and treating it as a document written by a human society rather than coming directly fully formed from hashem#adds such a FASCINATING dimension to analyzing the text#what were we thinking when we wrote this? what had recently been happening around us that might have inspired this passage?#what practical meaning did this particular commandment have for daily life in that time?#i love torah i love history i love anthropology and i love judaism#AND THE NATIONAL ORIGIN STORY AS A NARRATIVE FRAMING FOR ALL THE PRACTICAL LAWS!!!!!!! oooooohhhh i love it

the pathologic Kin is largely fictionalized with a created language that takes from multiple sources to be its own, a cosmogony & spirituality that does not correlate to the faiths (mostly Tengrist & Buddhist) practiced by the peoples it takes inspirations from, has customs, mores and roles invented for the purposes of the game, and even just a style of dress that does not resemble any of these peoples', but it is fascinating looking into specifically to me the sigils and see where they come from... watch this:
P2 Layers glyphs take from the mongolian script:
while the in-game words for Blood, Bones and Nerves are mongolian directly, it is interesting to note that their glyphs do not have a phonetic affiliation to the words (ex. the "Yas" layer of Bones having for glyph the equivalent of the letter F, the "Medrel" layer of Nerves having a glyph the equivalent of the letter È,...)
the leatherworks on the Kayura models', with their uses of angles and extending lines, remind me of the Phags Pa Script (used for Tibetan, Mongolian, Chineses, Uyghur language, and others)
some of the sigils also look either in part or fully inspired by Phags Pa script letters...
some look closer to the mongolian or vagindra (buryat) script
looking at the Herb Brides & their concept art, we can see bodypainting that looks like vertical buryat or mongolian script (oh hi (crossed out: Mark) Phags Pa script):
shaped and reshaped...

are you sure you don't wanna yap about the necromancers some more
LOOKS AT YOU WITH EYES FULL OF TEARS...........
SO LIKE the unserious reason why i don't yap about the necromancers some more is because i don't think i've said anything that already hasn't been said (the unfair treatment that they're subjected to in ravenwood vs. the spiral, how malistaire's actions indirectly made the lives of his students worse/creating or even heightening ambrose's quiet distaste for necromancy, how the narrative ((understandably but unfortunayely)) largely moves past these characters because they're not the focus of the plot, duncan's ENTIRE CHARACTER, etc.) these are all things that I've touched on before and out of fear that i'd repeat myself every few months i just....... sadly put my favorite characters away BUT.... I WILL SAY THIS......
i feel like if wizard101 was a show that didn't have us as the main focus, i feel like it would be super appropriate to have Malorn or Penny or even Marla be in the young wizard's place as the Savior of the Spiral. I feel like the story would only be enriched from a necromancer's perspective; they're the ones more directly affected by pre-arc 1 situations and it would reveal a side to Ambrose that isn't quite highlighted with us because we're a blank slate - not a set character with a set school (like the Death school).
If Malorn was the young wizard that would be..... oh man. In a series where the fictional setting would have more freedom and options to explore itself rather than its game form, i can really see Duncan becoming one of the series' antagonists and being the perfect foil to Malorn. I already talked about this too but these two guys are PERFECT for each other as narrative parallels and focusing on their unique personalities, skill sets, backstories, relationships with each other and the outside world while also highlighting their glaring similarities would be METAL to see on television. Dare I say it will even give Duncan's "gets recruited into the Schism" arc actual substance and justice rather than the "surprise funny bully man from high school is now your plot twist boss fight and you get to see him squirm and cry pathetically after you beat him up!" thing..........
if Malorn WAS the main character i can already see Penny and Marla being supporting characters, maybe like THE three alongside other wizards like CEREN NIGHTCHANT, Susie and Artur/ maybe even throw Nolan Stormgate in there fuck it! But i definitely, DEFINITELY want to see Wizard101's story told through a necromancer's eyes more than anyone else's. There's just more at stake, more to care about, and more to connect with through the hearts and minds of someone under society's proverbial thumb like that
#this wasn't so much as a necromancer specific post so much as it was a general vague wish to see how things could have been different#im dizzy and stressed out from real life being the way that it is right now so ill probably elaborate on a reblog later#anyways. thank you so much tumblr user ghostcond you are my necromancer inspiration buddy#i saw your sacrifice spell post and i got Ideas and i tried to supress them i swear#wizard101#wiz101#w101#text posts#asks#anonymous

I know I've been on about this for a while now and I'm being a hater but you're telling me SydCarmy was "always meant to be platonic" even though there are two seasons of writing making use of tried-and-true explicitly romantic tropes, themes and writing signals, and SydLuca is going to be romantic because...he was nice to her on screen for a few minutes?
I don't even care if people ship SydLuca, or if they just prefer it, but you can't honestly tell me that you believe Carmy was always meant to be a friend but Luca is an obvious love interest.
Just because Syd and Carmy haven't kissed or confessed their love to each other doesn't mean that isn't very obviously the direction this show is going. The Bear has already shown you who is endgame. It has shown you every episode of the show so far.
Honestly I really don't think The Bear fanbase understands this show or cares about these characters or the story being told here, which is unfortunate because this show is shockingly well-written in comparison to most shows right now, and we should be so grateful for it but all we're doing is complaining that the writers led us on by not making a ship canon fast enough. It's just. Sad.
#The Bear#SydCarmy#I was like a casual fan of this show two days ago#and now seeing how little respect this show gets from it's fanbase I'm losing my mind#I mean I shipped SydCarmy before anyway but now it means so much to me#it means so much to see such a realistic and purposefully well paced romance take place#so many shows portray romantic relationships and their beginnings in ways that just don't really happen in real life#and this show very purposefully said no. These are characters who are strangers. who are working together. Who are in a tense environment#and each of them has problems - one of them the type of problems that makes developing new relationships pretty difficult#these two would not get together right away. It would take a long time. And there would be ups and downs.#And even when that's the case. Even if when it takes a long time and doesn't go smoothly and is hard -#it can still be beautiful. It can still be romantic. It can still happen and here's how#and I'm just so inspired genuinely. It is so difficult to write romance without being cliche and so difficult to write it in a way that#could actually happen in real life and I really do hope I can write something half as good some day#and then to know so many people have no appreciation for it at all#because they prefer the shows that have characters make eye contact a few times and then confess their love for each other like#it's just fucking sad. So sad that so few people have any appreciation for good writing especially the difficult of romance writing#like I really just don't even know what to tell you. In real life these two would not have confessed to each other yet. They would not have#kissed yet. They would not have even realized they have feelings for each other yet because those feelings would still be developing#and I also want to point out that given the disparity in power between Syd and Carmy in season 1 it wouldn't have been healthy for them to#get together much sooner. He was her boss. He was also her idol. Before they can even get together that needs to be balanced out.#And then on top of that don't you see the value in Carmy realizing the dream girl he's romanticized in his head - Claire - isn't actually#what he wants? Don't you see the beauty in him being disillusioned from that? And realizing that Syd is what he wants?#Don't you see the beauty in Syd having an idealized vision of what Carmy The Great Chef is like realizing she was wrong and that he's human#and flawed and then realizing - she loves him anyway? She loves him more for not being on a pedestal and for having his flaws?#Are you telling me that even thinking about this doesn't move you? Doesn't make your heart ache a little?#And again - ship and let ship - but what is Luca? What is Luca if not just what she was hoping Carmy would be when she wen to The Beef?#What is he if not just another man who she has not seen under pressure yet? Not seen reliving trauma yet? Not been her boss yet?#It's easy to look at him and think he's better than Carmy - and that's the point. That's the point The Bear is making.#It is easy to want someone you don't know. It's hard to want to someone you do know. But that's what love requires and that's the point

I’ve always been fascinated by female characters that are defined specifically by what they mean to the (mostly male) characters around them in an objectifying way but I don’t mean misogynistic writing because I fully believe the narrative can be aware of the tragedy of never belonging to yourself or being allowed to have any agency in your own life. The mysterious dead girl who is the object of everyone’s curiosity or grief whose relationship with the men in her life is the focus of the investigation. Like…. The horror of having no agency within your own identity & no power to change that or take control of your own narrative.
#alice palmer#the way her brother fakes a haunting to cope with her grief#& her shrink & her secret lover both just find her mystery & tragedy fascinating#even her own haunting doesn’t belong to her or get to exist under her terms#but actually this is about my oc alice Elderwood who I fully admit is heavily inspired by Alice Palmer lol#Alice Elderwood#she even defines herself by what she means to first her father then Henry then her brother then Nick#which. in my mind is part of why she’s doomed. she never lets anything be just about her#she’s too focused on catering her existence to the men in her life#& that is part of her tragedy#anyway#this app is how I think out loud don’t mind me#this is also true of#Claire Calloway#who only cares about being a good daughter to her father (& mother but her father is the one she’s working with to her own undoing)#& then she dies for a man#to an extent it’s also true of#Marion Sawyer#who is so consumed by fixing her brothers problems & mental state she’s willing to go to insane lengths#hm maybe the real lesson of this story is don’t do shit for a man ever / half joking

Hi! I am an ardent fan of your writing, and I hope to be as sorted and planned as you some day in my own writing journey.
My question is: you have a keen eye when it comes to planning character personality, dynamics, and such. I've also been wading through your ask replies, and your insights into how you write people and how you make them play off of each other is so wonderful to read. If it's not too personal a q, how did you learn how to write like this? Did you go to school for writing, does it come from years of observing people, do you have reading list recs for "how to write real people and real interactions"?
Thanks! This is a really flattering question. I'll try to answer it honestly, because I wish someone had been brutally honest about this with me when I was a young writer.
I didn't go to school for writing. I started doing it when I was about nine years old. It sucked very badly. I kept writing throughout high school, and it still mostly sucked, but some of it was occasionally interesting. ("Interesting" here does not mean "good," by the way.) I took a break in college, and then came back. I've been writing ever since. Sometimes, I feel good about it. A lot of the time, I don't!
I hate giving this advice, because I remember how it feels to get it, and it's the most uninspiring, boring-ass, dog shit advice you can get, but it's also the only advice that is 100% unequivocally true: you have to write, and specifically, you have to write things that suck.
I do not mean that you should make things that suck on purpose. I mean that you have to sit down and try your absolute hardest to make something good. You have to put in the hours, the elbow grease, the blood, sweat, and tears, and then you have to read it over and accept that it just totally sucks. There is no way around this, and you should be wary of people who tell you there is. There is no trick, no rule, no book you can buy or article you can read, that will make your writing not suck. The best someone else can do is tell you what good writing looks like, and chances are, you knew that anyway — after all, you love to read. You wouldn't be trying to do this if you didn't. And anyone who says they can teach you to write so good it doesn't suck at first is either lying to you, or they have forgotten how they learned to write in the first place.
So the trick is to sit there in the miserable doldrums of Suck, write a ton, and learn to like it. Because this is the phase of your path as an artist when you find what it is you love about writing, and it cannot be the chance to make "good writing." This will be the thing that bears you through and compels you to keep going when your writing is shit, i.e., the very thing that makes you a writer in the first place. So find that, and you've got a good start.
Some people know this, but assume that perseverance as a writer is about trying to get to the point where you don't suck anymore. This is not true, and it is an actively dangerous lie to tell young writers. You are not aiming to feel like your writing doesn't suck. You are aiming to write. You are aiming to have written. Everything else is dust and rust. And of course, you'll find things you like about your pieces, you'll find things you're proud of, you'll learn to love the things you've made. But that little itch of self-criticism, in the back of your brain — the one that cringes when you read a clunky line, or thinks of a better character beat right after it's far too late to change — that's never going away. That's the Writer part of you. Read Kafka, read Dickens, read Tolstoy, you will find diary entries where they lament how absolutely fucking atrocious their writing was, and how angry they are that they can't do better. A good writer hates their sentences because they can always imagine better ones. And the ability to imagine a better sentence is what's going to make you pick up the pen again tomorrow. And the day after that. And the day after that.
Which is what I mean, and probably what all those other annoying, preachy advice-givers mean, when we say: a good writer is just someone who writes every day. It's that easy, and that hard.
#by the way a lot of this draws on ideas inspired by 'letters to a young poet' by rainer maria rilke if you're interested#that's a formative text for me as an artist#it won't teach you how to write but it will teach you how to think perhaps#and once you know how to think. well. life is just pretty good#and i can't say the writing gets easier but when life is pretty good i find myself enjoying it a lot more#this word vomit was prompted by the question 'how do you write real people and real interactions'#because that's like — i'm not trying to be pedantic but—#that's kind of just 'how do you write literature'?#because that's all literature is. what are human beings? how do you write a person? how do they interact with each other?#like shoutout to the void if you know for sure how to write real interactions then please for the love of god tell the rest of us#because i think most of all authors in history have just been giving it our best stab#'this is how the world looks for me. is it how the world looks for you?'#so my advice on that score is: try to see how the world looks for you#and then try to share it with me#don't worry about whether it looks the same for me. it won't

You Can Do Well (Part 1)
“And the Lord said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry? And why do you look sad and depressed and dejected? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.’”
Genesis 4.6-7 (AMPC)
You can do well! But maybe, you are not doing well. Maybe, you find yourself consistently angry, sad, and depressed. Maybe, you see others getting blessed by God and it bothers you. Maybe, you firmly believe you are doing all the right things, but something is still off. It’s time for a heart check. It’s time to be honest. Here are 3 indicators that you are not doing well and what it signifies.
1. You lack love for God.
Before Cain even committed murder, his deeds were recognized as evil. 1 John 3.11-12 states, “For this is the message which you [believers] have heard from the beginning [of your relationship with Christ], that we should [unselfishly] love and seek the best for one another; and not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother [Abel]. And why did he murder him? Because Cain’s deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.”
What made Cain so different from Abel? They both offered sacrifices to God. However, Hebrews 11.4 distinguishes that “by faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts.” By faith, Abel gave an offering that God respected and regarded “for without faith it is impossible to please Him” (Hebrews 11.6). Abel’s faith set him apart from Cain, and faith works and expresses itself through love (Galatians 5.6).
1 Corinthians 13.1-3 states, “If I [can] speak with the tongues of men and [even] of angels, but have not love (that reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion such as is inspired by God’s love for and in us), I am only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose), and understand all the secret truths and mysteries and possess all knowledge, and if I have [sufficient] faith so that I can remove mountains, but have not love (God’s love in me) I am nothing (a useless nobody). Even if I dole out all that I have [to the poor in providing] food, and if I surrender my body to be burned or in order that I may glory, but have not love (God’s love in me), I gain nothing.”
God is love and, when you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, He abundantly pours out His love into your heart through the Holy Spirit (1 John 4.8, Romans 5.5). Without God’s love in you, your faith means nothing. Without God’s love in you, any external, religious acts you perform unto God ultimately mean nothing. Without God’s love in you, you are nothing.
Matthew 22.37-39 states, “And Jesus replied to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for others].’” Loving God is the greatest commandment and the most important thing you can do.
When you love God willingly and with all your heart, you can live a life defined by faith because you know and trust Him. When you truly love God, you love others. When you love God, you obey His commandments. When you love God, you can give Him the right sacrifice with the right motive. Abel sacrificed the firstborn lamb, a pleasing sacrifice to the Lord (Genesis 4.4). Jesus willingly laid down His life because He “loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God [slain for you, so that it became] a sweet fragrance” (Ephesians 5.2). You are called to offer your life as a “living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship” out of sincere love for God (Romans 12.1).
You can only do well when you love God, and then everything you do will be motivated by love for Him.
2. You are proud.
When you are proud, you are unteachable. You refuse to be accountable for your actions. You refuse to admit that you’ve done wrong. When God reproved Cain, Cain should have humbled himself, repented, and received the correction. However, Cain’s heart was hard and callous from pride and he refused the Lord’s chastisement. Proverbs 16.18 states, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” When Cain refused to humble himself and submit to the Lord’s correction, his pride allowed sin to master him, which led to his destruction.
James 4.6-7 states, “But He gives more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, ‘God is opposed to the proud and haughty, but [continually] gives [the gift of] grace to the humble [who turn away from self-righteousness].’ So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you.” By the grace of God and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, you can live in obedience to God and in victory over sin. First, you must humble yourself and submit your life wholly to the Lord – loving, trusting, and obeying Him (1 John 5.1-3). Then, through the Holy Spirit, you will have the power to resist the devil, defy sin, and victoriously overcome the world by your faith in Jesus Christ (1 John 5.4-5).
You can only do well when you humble yourself and submit your life to the Lord.
3. You compare yourself with others.
Cain’s negative feelings flared up because he knew his deeds were evil and Abel’s were righteous. His comparison led to envy, envy led to hatred, and hatred led to murder. 1 John 3.15 states, “Everyone who hates (works against) his brother (in Christ) is [at heart] a murderer [by God’s standards]; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” God’s correction was a chance for Cain to self-evaluate and change his ways, yet Cain wanted to lash out in anger and kill his brother.
You can’t compare yourself with others. It can lead to rivalry, dissension, discontentment, envy, and hatred. It can create opportunities to vent negative emotions towards others that you feel inside of yourself. It will never address the underlying issue in your heart or your circumstances.
Galatians 6.4 states, “But let every person carefully scrutinize and examine and test his own conduct and his own work. He can then have the personal satisfaction and joy of doing something commendable [in itself alone] without [resorting to] boastful comparison with his neighbor.” When you humble yourself, self-evaluate your behavior, and align your ways to God’s Word, your correction will bring true satisfaction and joy. It will eliminate the source of your negative feelings. It will eliminate the need to compare yourself with others. It will assure you that you have done well and are in the right standing with God.
You can do well! It is possible! Crooked paths can be made straight, the wayward can gain understanding, your old moral and spiritual condition can pass away and all things about your life can be made new! You can do well - Love the Lord with all your heart, humble and submit yourself wholly to Him, and evaluate your behavior and align it with God’s Word. Then, you will be accepted and succeed.
