Whumptober 2023 - Prompt No. 2
"I'll call out your name, but you won't call back." | Thermometer | Delirium | "They don't care about you."
Just when things were starting to go good again, they went downhill. Because if anything was consistent in his life, it was the bad luck. So even though he had just become captain of the newly refurbished Enterprise and they were about to start their 5 year mission, the first ever in Star Fleet history, he had to go and mess things up.
It started out as just a regular routine mission. They were supposed to go to this planet along the outskirts of the Alpha quadrant so they could see if it might be a good fit for the vulcan refugees.
“This is Captain Kirk. We are 5 hours out from Non Tellio in the Rho Minor system. Once we arrive I would like 2 security officers as well as a few scientists specialized in environmental studies to accompany me and First Officer Spock in Transporter 1. Kirk out.”
~~~
“Keptin. We are rapidly approaching the atmosphere of the planet. Should we enter orbit?”
“Aye Chekov. Make it so.” As he said this, Kirk rose in his seat and headed to the turbolift. “Spock, you’re with me.”
“Yes Captain.” The two headed to the turbolift where is took them down to the transporter wing. The 2 security officers as well as the scientists were already there when they arrived and Scotty was manning the transporter room.
“7 to beam down to the surface Scotty.”
“Aye Captain. Stand by to transport.” The seven of them got onto the transporter pad, and then felt the tingling sensation Kirk had always associated with being transported. He supposed he should stop teasing Bones about the dislike of transporters, after all, it did leave him feeling off balanced when he arrived.
In the ten seconds it took for him to run this train of thought, they had arrived on the planet. However, it seemed like the planet was covered in crystalline structures, which was weird because this planet was supposed to be similar to vulcan. Which meant sand, not crystals.
“Captain it appears the planet is not what we were expecting.”
“No shit Sherlock.”
“Captain my name is Spock not Sherlock.”
“It’s an expression Spock.”
“Ah.” There was a pause. “I still do not get it.” Kirk shook his head.
“Nevermind then.” He turned to address the landing party. “I know this isn’t what we were expecting and I doubt it will work as a planet for the vulcan refugees but nonetheless we should still observe the planet.”
There was a chorus of “Aye Captains” as the landing team fanned out, leaving just Spock and Kirk.
“Well Spock? Where do you want to explore?”
“I don’t think we should do any exploring until the rest of the party has come back.”
“Oh come on it will be fun!”
“Captain with you various allergies I don’t think it’s wise to-” Spock was cut off as Kirk starting walking in the opposite direction. Spock sighed and started following, after all, someone responsible had to follow him.
By the time Spock had gotten over to Kirk, he had already started poking at the different alien plant life. Spock had to resist the urge to roll his eyes.
“Hey Spock come look at this! It looks like it’s smiling at me!” When Spock heard this he panicked, he had remembered an alien plant in the Vulcan archives that looked bright and colorful but would trap you in your mind if you got to close. It was a brilliant defense mechanism, but unfortunately not so great when you have a Captain such as Kirk.
Just as Spock was about to warn him, Kirk touched the plant. The effect was immediate. His eyes glazed over and he collapsed.
“Spock to Enterprise. Two to beam up to med bay.”
“Aye Spock.”
~~~
McCoy was having a perfectly fine day. Until Kirk decided to do something stupid and ruin his alone time. That kid was going to be the death of him one day.
“Alright hobgoblin. What happened.”
“We landed on the planet and even though it wasn’t anything like Vulcan, the Captain thought it would be wise to explore anyways.”
“And I’m assuming that means he decided to go start touching random things?”
“Yes. Just as he was about to touch the plant I recognized it from our archives on Vulcan. I believe it has trapped Kirk in his mind. Although he may also be allergic to it.”
“Kid can’t do anything by half measures can he?”
“Doctor?”
“Nevermind. Why don’t you go look through the computer and see if you can’t find that plant while I stay here and try and keep him from dying.”
“Yes Doctor McCoy. I shall return once I have found the information.”
~~~
He was cold. It wasn’t the cold when his mom forgot to pay for the power in fall. It was a deep, piercing cold. It seemed to go down to his bones, down to his very soul. All he could feel was cold. There was nothing else.
~~~
“Doctor I believe I found something that may be of use.”
“Well thank god because keeping Kirk alive is harder than a biscuit during winter.”
“Are biscuits not normally hard?”
“What no- nevermind. What do you have.”
“It seems the plant definitely has a mental aspect to it and it if the Captain can work through it on his own, he should come back to us. If he isn’t back within 24 hours, it means he is stuck and needs help getting out. Normally a Vulcan Healer would be used, but as I am the only Vulcan on the ship, it would have to be me.”
“Kid can’t ever make it easy for me can he.”
“Unfortunately not Doctor.”
“Yes well it’s already almost 20 hours in and he hasn’t shown any signs of change. You are probably gonna have to do my job for me and get Kirk out of this damned situation.”
“I shall go meditate so I am ready, comm me at the 24 hour mark.”
~~~
24 hours later and there was still no change in Kirk’s condition. So Spock had McCoy transport Kirk over to his dorms so he could set up the traditional meditation chamber. He didn’t want anything to go wrong especially when dealing with matters of the mind.
He steeled himself to enter Kirk’s mind. Checked, and double checked, and triple checked his shields were in place. But nothing prepared him for what he saw when he entered.
~~~
He felt the sting of pain all over his body. Each knife seemed to say something different.
“They don’t care about you.” A stab to the heart.
“Why would Spock ever want to be friends with you.” A stab from behind.
“You are a monster.” A stab in the palm of his hand.
“Why are you such an idiot.” A stab to the head.
“You never should have survived Tarsus.” A stab in his stomach.
“You are less than zero.” He is bleeding out. He was covered in blood. He collapsed.
~~~
Spock rushed over to Kirk horrified. His Captain, his friend, was bleeding out in front of him.
“Captain!” There was a certain air of desperation to Spock’s voice that he hadn’t experienced since Nero. There was no response. There was a stench of blood and the chilling silence that always seemed to avoid his friend. Except for now. Now his friend was silent and hardly moving.
He rushed to Kirk’s side and collapsed on his knees next to him. He had to do something, anything. So he placed his hands on Kirk’s. And he did the only thing he could do. He took Kirk’s pain from him and replaced it with the words “Wake Up”.
Maybe he would die, or stay trapped in his Captain’s mind. But it would be worth it. He had to atone for what he did to his friend somehow. And maybe this would finally be his recompense.
~~~
When Kirk awoke he wasn’t in the med bay for once. He blinked his eyes open and looked around the room. He saw Spock in the corner which meant he had to be in his first officer’s quarters.
He slowly got up from the bed and walked over to Spock who seemed to still be in meditation.
“Spock?” No response. He shook Spock’s shoulders. No response. He felt something wet in his hands and looked down. Blood. But there was no pain. Which meant…
“Computer to MedBay.”
“Spock did it work?”
“Bones! I’m awake but Spock is currently unresponsive and bleeding out, I need you to come down here.”
“Damn Hobgoblin. You got it Captain.” 5 minutes later and Bones was down there with his full emergency kit for when someone was so critical they couldn’t be moved to MedBay.
He watched as Bones scanned Spock with his tricorder and found several stab wounds. He patched them up as quickly as he could with the dermal regenerator. When that was finished he hooked Spock up to a bag of fluids and blood that he had stored from Spock just in case anything like this ever happened.
“...will he be okay?” Bones turned to Kirk and nodded. He breathed a sigh of relief. Hopefully when Spock woke up he would be able to fill him in on what all had happened. But for now he would wait by his First Officer’s side until he woke up. It was the least he could do.

Star Trek - Leonard "Bones" McCoy x reader - Southern Charm - Words: 3,556
A/N: While I did write this with TOS in mind, I do believe it is fairly AOS compliant as well. Enjoy!
"Lieutenant Commander Y/N L/N, Chief Medical Officer of the Starship Serenity."
"Welcome aboard the Enterprise, Doctor L/N. I'm Captain James T. Kirk. This is my first officer, Commander Spock and our CMO, Doctor McCoy. We're looking forward to having you as the first trainee in the Starship Exchange Training program."
"Pleasure to meet you all. And I'm looking forward to it as well," You replied, stepping off the transporter pad. You gave the Captain a handshake, the First Officer a Vulcan salute and then turned to the grumpy looking CMO.
"How old are you?" He demanded to know.
"Old enough," You assured him, crossing your arms. "Why do you ask?"
"Just don't see many youngsters like you with that rank," He trailed off, leaving the statement open ended.
"Well, I happen to be an outlier. Or haven't you heard of that, Doctor? Besides, I'm not that young," You replied, curtly. You didn't often become confrontational this quickly but questions on your age and suspicions on how you got your rank were a sore spot for you.
"Just because I have to train you doesn't mean I have to like it," McCoy grumbled.
"I never asked you to." You quickly grabbed your bag that was transported with you and walked to the doors. Just before you stepped out to the hallway, you turned back around. "Captain, Commander, have a good evening. I am looking forward to working with you two over the next few weeks. Don't worry, I know where my quarters are. Doctor, I will see you at 6."
As you unpacked your bag, you thought over what happened in the transporter room. You had really been looking forward to this training and you had heard many great things about the Doctor. Of course, you had also heard he was a bit of a grump, but you hadn't thought it was this bad! You decided to stay in your room for the rest of that evening, as it was already late when you arrived, and try for a fresh start in the morning.
"Are you out of your mind? I'm a doctor, not an assassin!"
"I was simply saying, Doctor McCoy, that Starfleet medical personnel are completely untrained in self defense techniques! We are trained to save lives, not take them. That I completely agree with. But we must also be trained how to defend and disable. Defend ourselves, disable our opponents. Otherwise we may become a hindrance to any away missions we get assigned on!"
"Look, even if you're right, and you're not, when would we have the time to train?" He yelled. "Have you ever been to medical school? Do you know how stressful that is?"
"Of course I went to med school! I happened to graduate top of my class! And I remember very clearly how stressful it is! But they need to make it work! Even another month would be enough for most!"
"Another month?" He screeched. He raked his fingers through his hair and rubbed his forehead. "Look, I have plenty of training to defend myself in the field. Let's just agree to disagree and get this over with."
"Alright, Doctor," You sighed. The first 2 weeks of training slowly passed with the only change in attitude being on your side. You'd gotten to disliking the Doctor as much as he disliked you. Every day you trained was near constant arguing and insulting.
Unbeknownst to you, Kirk had started taking bets from the senior crew members on when in the final week you two would get together. Whoever won would get 3 days vacation. The current bets on Kirk's paper were:
Uhura: As she steps on the transporter to leave Thursday
Scotty: Monday
Chekov: End of shift Tuesday
Sulu: Beginning of shift Wednesday
Spock: At precisely 07:35 in the evening Friday
Kirk looked oddly at Spock when he submitted his estimate. "Spock, you do realize she is scheduled to leave Thursday afternoon."
"Yes, Jim."
"So why-"
"I have my reasons."
"Logical, I'm sure."
"Quite. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm needed in engineering."
"Ok, Spock. But don't get your hopes high about any vacation!"
Monday: Scotty's Day
You got up early and headed down to the rec room to get breakfast. Usually you had breakfast in your room but this morning, oddly enough, Scotty had invited you to join him for breakfast. Once you entered the rec room you mentally groaned. Of course McCoy would be there!
"Good morning, Scotty," You greeted, walking up to his table which was unfortunately right next to Kirk, Spock, and McCoy's table.
"Aye! And an even lovelier morning with you here, lassie!" You blushed slightly, surprised at the engineer's comment.
"Oh please!" You scoffed. You were about to walk away to the replicators to get your food when Spock cleared his throat.
"I believe Mister Scott is correct, Doctor. Your hair and makeup accentuate your natural beauty quite well."
"Spock!" You, Kirk and McCoy gasped at the same time.
"Look here," You finally said, gathering your composure. "I appreciate a compliment here and there but really! I'm going to go get my breakfast and I don't want to hear one more peep out of any of you when I return! Understand?" They all nodded and stuck to their word, not another compliment for the rest of the day.
Tuesday - Chekov's Day
Your shift had gone fairly well. Training with Doctor McCoy was finally becoming almost bearable and there hadn't been any major disasters. "Doctor, was there anything else you needed me for today?" You asked, stepping into the open doorway of his office.
"No, you can go if you'd like," He sighed, not lifting his eyes from his PADD.
"Is something troubling you, Doctor?"
"Just a lot of paperwork, darlin'," He said absently. You blushed brightly and he quickly tried to correct himself. "I mean, Doctor. Sorry." He finally looked at you, face as red as yours. You nodded and attempted to make a hasty exit but you ran into a gold blur.
"Oh! Ezcuze me!" Chekov quickly said, helping you up. "I'm wery sorry! Are you hurt?"
"Only my pride, Pavel," You replied, dusting yourself off.
"What in blazes happened out here?" McCoy yelled, stomping out.
"Oh nothing, Doctor," You assured him.
"Well watch where you're going next time!" He ordered. With that he marched back to his office and closed the doors. You sighed and wished Chekov goodnight before leaving.
"No vacation," Chekov mumbled softly before leaving Medbay too.
Wednesday - Sulu's Day
You walked into Medbay to start your shift only to find Sulu already there. "What are you doing here so early?" You asked. "Your check-up isn't for another 45 minutes."
"I wanted to make sure I got here on time. You know how it is on the bridge sometimes," He chuckled. You nodded and chuckled lightly. You checked the schedule on the PADD and noticed the Ensign before him had cancelled.
"Well, Sulu, you just managed to get an early appointment. Step on up!" You had him sit on the nearest biobed and grabbed your Tricorder. As you started running over the usual check-up points, Dr. McCoy walked in.
"You're here early," He commented. Sulu nodded and you explained what happened. "Alright. Y/N, I'm going to leave you to it. I have a headache this morning and I think I'll just sit in my office for a bit with the lights down." You looked at him a little better, noticing how exhausted he looked. His hair was a mess and there were dark bags under his eyes. He may be a pain but he was still human and you felt for him.
"Did you need me to get you anything, Doctor?" You asked. He shook his head but groaned at the movement. "Just comm me if you need anything." He made a noise of agreement and you went on with Sulu's checkup.
Thursday - Uhura's Day
"Good morning, Y/N," Uhura greeted you in the turbolift on your way to Medbay.
"Good morning, Uhura," You replied abit sadly.
"You alright, sweetheart?"
"I'm going to miss you all. I love my ship and my crew, don't get me wrong, but," You trailed off, unsure of how to explain yourself.
"You don't feel like family there?" She filled in. You nodded slightly. "Oh honey, I understand. Don't feel bad, alright? Who knows! Maybe you'll get a transfer one day even!"
"That would be nice I guess," You admitted. The doors swooshed open and as you stepped out, Dr. McCoy walked by.
"Doctor L/N," He said, sounding somewhat frustrated. "I need you to gather all the anti-toxin hypos we have."
"Of course. Is everything alright?"
"Spock just told me we're going on a mission tomorrow. He should have told me at least 2 days ago. The new colony on Oliza 6 sent out a distress call about 1 week ago saying that something was wrong. They said some of the younger people were having strange reactions to some of the foods."
"That's odd. Isn't the food on a planet usually tested first?"
"Yes but apparently they forgot to test on the younger adults. Blasted regulations. Test one adult you've tested them all." At this point you had nodded a silent goodbye to Uhura and started walking with Doctor McCoy down the hall. "Let's see if we can't find out what's on that planet and run some tests of our own. Might save some time."
"Doctor?" You said, somewhat hesitantly.
"Yes?"
"I do have to go back to my ship this afternoon. I," you paused. McCoy had finally started to be nice with you and now you had to go. You didn't want to upset him again on your last day. "I'll help as much as I can on the tests of course, Doctor, but I-"
"No, no," He said with a sigh. "I didn't realize it was Thursday." He smiled slightly and put his hand on your shoulder. "If you tell anyone what I'm about to say, I'll have to kill you," He joked. "Your work has been excellent. Your skill set is beyond your years and please don't take that wrong. You've impressed me." You blushed at his praise. "Of course, I still don't agree with the extra combat training," He added. You rolled your eyes and he chuckled. "But I guess you're not so bad."
"Well thank you, Doctor. I, uh, I guess I'll get the hypos for you now."
"Oh, um, yes, thank you," he replied somewhat awkwardly. The rest of your shift went about the same. You and the Doctor awkwardly dancing around each other. Eventually, though, the time came for you to finish packing, and leave the Enterprise.
As you headed to the transporter room, Uhura came running up to you with a small package in her hands. "What's this?" You asked.
"Oh, just a little going away present that a few of us put together for you."
"That's really sweet of you. Thanks so-"
"Bridge to Lt. Uhura," The Captain's voice rang through her comm.
"Duty calls!" She exclaimed. "Keep in touch!"
"Will do!" You replied, heading off to the transporters. Once you got there though, you saw Scotty talking to the Captain through the comm. He seemed upset about something.
"But Captain! I-"
"Scotty, we need to help that colony. There's no time."
"Aye, Captain. Scott out," He sighed. "I cannae believe 'at."
"What's wrong?"
"Oh, lassie. I'm so sorry! The Captain just got an emergency message from Oliza 6. We're heading there straight away."
"So I'll be staying another night?"
"At least." Your brows furrowed in thought. While you did want to get back to your ship to start your transfer application, a few more days here was not all that bad.
"Ok," You replied. Scotty seemed surprised. "I'll just take this back to my room and then head to Medbay. They'll probably need me handy."
"Aye. I'll let the Captain and Doctor know." You nodded in reply and headed off. When you returned to Medbay, you could have sworn you saw a look of relief on McCoy's face.
"Doctor L/N," McCoy said. "I'm putting you in charge of Medbay for the time being." Your eyebrows raised in surprise. "Jim's put me on the landing party and you technically are the next ranking medical officer on this ship."
"Well, thank you, I guess," You said. "Have you made any progress on the tests?"
"I believe so," He pulled up some test results on his PADD and showed them to you. "The hobgoblin ended up helping me but he was actually of some use." He looked around furtively. "Don't tell him I said so though."
"I promise," you said seriously. You stared at each other for a moment before you both broke out into a fit of laughter.
"Really though, the fruits on Oliza 6 seem to be causing a buildup of adrenaline in their systems causing aggression, anxiety and heart problems."
"Hm, interesting."
"That's what the hobgoblin said," McCoy grunted. You chuckled and he finished explaining their plan to administer hypos to everyone. The comm suddenly whistled.
"Bridge to Dr. McCoy," Uhura said.
"Yes, Lieutenant?" He replied.
"The Captain is preparing to beam down now and would like you to meet him in the transporter room."
"Alright, I'm on my way." You followed the Doctor as he gathered a few last minute items from his office. When he grabbed his phaser from his desk you couldn't help yourself.
"Doctor, that phaser is last year's model. Didn't you get your new one?"
"Oh, must not've. I'll ask Scotty for one." He grabbed his communicator and flipped it open. "McCoy to Scott."
"Scott here. Whaddya need, Doctor?"
"L/N said my phaser is old. Got a new one for me?"
"Sure do, Doc. I'll have her all polished up for ya when ya get to the transporters. Just remember, this one's a wee bit more powerful than the last. She's got a bit of a kick!"
"Don't worry, Scotty, I'm sure I can handle it. McCoy out." You looked worriedly at him because, knowing his views on defense training and based on what he said, this new phaser would throw him for a loop.
"Doctor, perhaps you should just stay with your old pha-"
"Doctor L/N," He said stiffly. "I do not want to hear anything more about training. I am perfectly capable of defending myself. Please do not worry yourself. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a mission to attend to. Do you think you'll be able to handle Medbay while I'm gone?"
"Of course, Doctor McCoy," You snapped. You heard the Medbay doors swoosh closed and sighed, leaning on he's desk in his office. You closed the office doors and locked them, needing a moment to gather yourself. "Gah! That man is so annoying!" You yelled to yourself. "If he doesn't get himself killed on this mission-" you left your threat unfinished. "Oh! I could just kiss him," You seethed. "I mean, kick." You paused, mid-pace, and shook your head vigorously. Your brain had apparently taken a left turn without telling you. "Did I seriously just-and now I'm talking to myself. Ok, Y/N, get yourself together. You'll figure it out later." You finished your little pep talk and headed back out.
The first few hours were fine. One or two clumsy engineers with a few cuts and bruises. A sniffle here and a headache there. It was actually somewhat relaxing. You decided to be a little helpful and got some paperwork done for Dr. McCoy. As you sat in his office tapping away on your PADD, you found yourself lost in thought. You hoped he wouldn't be upset that you did some extra work for him. "That's not what I asked you to do, Doctor!" You mocked under your breath. Chuckling slightly you continued your quiet monologue, "Oh wouldn't he be upset if I ran a report on him. He definitely is overworked. He'd come in here, yelling and screaming in that adorable southern accent of his, and he would proba-" You interrupted yourself again. Staring off for a second, realizing what you just said. "Adorable? Good grief. I'm either unconscious or demented."
The rest of the shift went fairly well and you heard that the landing party was making good progress too. Finally you turned everything over to the night shift doctor and went to your quarters to get some rest before your shift began again in the morning. Your sleep that night was restless, though, and when your alarm went off you didn't think you had slept a wink.
Friday - Spock's Day
"Good morning, Doctor L/N," one of the nurses greeted you as you walked into Medbay.
"Good morning," You replied tiredly. "Anything on the schedule?" You asked as you got a cup of coffee from the replicator.
"No. Just a couple of vaccines that the nurses can take care of."
"Good. I'll be in the office if you need me then."
"Are you alright, Doctor?"
"Fine. Just couldn't sleep last night."
"Oh, I understand. I'm worried about Dr. McCoy too. As I understand, the reaction the youths are having is fairly viol-"
"I am not worried about the good doctor!" You yelled, angrily. "Just in case you didn't notice, he's not exactly my type. And even if he was, that is no concern of yours, nurse!"
"Permission to speak freely, Doctor?" She asked with a slight smirk.
"Of course," You replied, rubbing your forehead. "I'm not the dang Captain." She giggled lightly before replying.
"That's exactly what McCoy would say. No go get some rest. We'll hold down the fort, Doctor." With that she walked off to get a few things prepped for the day. As you walked into the office and sat down, you thought about her observation.
"Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit."
A few hours later, after a short nap and another cup of coffee, you were reorganizing the supply room when Scotty called through on the comm. "Doctor L/N! We're gonna need a team down here immediately! The captain and Dr. McCoy were injured and we're beaming them aboard right now!"
"Ok, Scotty, we'll be right there, how serious is it?" You replied. Chills had run up your spine when he said Dr. McCoy had been injured but you kept yourself focused.
"The Captain's not too bad. I think he said a broken arm. Doctor McCoy though. He's in pretty rough shape."
"Alright. L/N out," You signed off. You started to grab emergency supplies and sent the emergency team down to the transporter room. Just like Scotty said, McCoy was in critical condition by the time you saw him. He was completely unconscious, had multiple broken ribs, a broken right arm, a fractured left leg, and a concussion. After about 3 hours in surgery, he was finally patched up. You looked at the chronometer and saw it was about 3 in the afternoon. Deciding that you needed to talk to him as soon as he woke, you opted to sit guard on a chair next to his bed.
"Doctor L/N?" A nurse called out. You opened your eyes with a start. Looking at the chronometer again you realized another 4 hours had passed.
"Has he woken up?" The nurse nodded. "Well why didn't you wake me?" You whisper yelled, not wanting to wake him now.
"For the same reason you're whispering now. He didn't want to wake you." You shook your head and looked back at him sleeping on the biobed. "His vitals are good and he will likely make a full recovery in about a week."
"Oh no! This doctor is getting a prescription for some real R&R for at least a month. He's been far too overworked." You immediately grabbed the PADD with his chart information and put him on medical leave for a month. The nurse smiled at you and shook her head.
"You know, you're technically off duty now. You can head back to your quarters."
"I think I'll stay here a bit longer," You said slowly, a blush rising to your cheeks.
"I thought so," She nodded. You settled back down in the chair and got a bit more paperwork done on your PADD. Looking at the chronometer again you saw it just turned to 7:33pm. You heard a groan from the bed and saw the Doctor waking up.
"Well hello there, darlin'," He smirked.
"Hello, Dr. McCoy," You smiled.
"Oh for Pete's sake, would you please just call me Leonard!"
"I'll consider it," You grinned. You stared at him for a moment, realizing again just how scared you had been.
"You alright, Y/N?"
"I was just so scared, Leonard," You admitted. "I wasn't sure if I'd ever be able to tell you-" you stopped mid-sentence, nervous to continue.
"Tell me what?" You decided to chance it so you bent over and gave him a quick kiss. Standing up quickly, you looked away embarrassed. "Well, I'm not sure I understood. Can I hear that again?" He smirked. You smiled and leaned forward again for another kiss. You vaguely heard the doors open but neither you nor Leonard paid attention.
"So, any plans for your 3 days vacation, Spock?"

Act of Guilt
Summary: Your actions planetside begin to interfere with your daily life and Leonard McCoy, struggling to see you this way, wants to help.
TW: Teen rating for mature themes, we’re talking through some sleep paralysis, we’re having bad dreams, we're absolutely full of angst but we end on a high besties <33
This one goes out to all my homies that are overworked and underappreciated :’) whether it be school, college, uni, careers or general life; you are seen, you are valid and I think you’re doing a great job and so does our homeboy Leonard McCoy.
Masterlist!
Word Count: 1855
You were used to waking up against the frigid grey of the Enterprise. Even as a high ranking officer you were each assigned the same internal quarters, uniform in presentation. Glutted, you often heard a little more than you wanted to on either side of your walls. You feared that perhaps they heard a little too much as well.
You were used to waking up with frozen limbs. With the same familiar feeling washing over your head before rushing down to tighten your chest. The same reluctance to open your eyes to reveal whichever heinous scene your subconscious displayed within your familiar raw walls.
Every night played out the same: the face of someone you loved in front of your pointed phaser switched to kill, heaved awake by the thud of their lifeless body, held a frozen prisoner forced to endure whichever fear felt most prominent that morning.
Recently you couldn’t even bring yourself to near the bed. You’d return from shifts to sit on the bitter floor and recount the enemies you’d killed in the name of Starfleet. You’d think of their lives, their loved ones, their dreams.
You were brought to Starfleet to be a doctor; now it seems they’d have you do anything but.
It was Thursday. You made your way to the medbay to be briefed on the rota for this week. You weaved in and out of a sea of uniforms who stalked towards their own respective bases for their own respective rotas.
Your week often looked the same - another sense of routine you couldn’t seem to escape - five days with the ground team, one shift in the medbay, one day off. Your medbay shift was always the same too. Sunday shift: the biggest influx of causalities, highs of inpatients with the longest turnover time, most surgeries performed and somehow always understaffed.
Moving towards your, makeshift, office you picked up your PADD and looked for the rota that Leonard always sent to you prior to the briefing. Seven days of ground work. You almost doubled over from the thought of it. Your entire body felt hot as you took deep breath convincing bodily fluids to stay put.
With frantic pace you arrived at Leonard’s, very much real, office and found him turned away finishing his notes for the day.
You dropped the PADD in front of him with force, “Explain.”
“You know that if I had it my way you’d be here seven days a week.” Leonard spoke as if rehearsed, he’d obviously anticipated your visit.
“You have jurisdiction here, Leonard. Surely there’s something you can do? Something you haven’t tried?” You scrambled out as Leonard put his pen down and held his head in his hands.
“I’ve tried everything darlin’. You don’t know how important it is to me that you’re here.” Your mind flicked through your conversations in the medbay that went on a little too long as you stood a little too close. Stolen moments through the day you’d fill with genuine laughter and escapism. The fresh flowers that would appear in your crooked office that he’d never let you thank him for. You remembered the shifts where Leonard would let you take the lead while he caught up on sleep on his couch. The days you’d both stay behind and drink away the sourness until you met the sweetness of his lips on yours. “I’ve tried everything.”
“Tell them we’re understaffed. Tell them I’m indispensable. Tell them-” Your voice broke. Leonard head lifted at the sound revealing a deep hole in his cheek unmistakably driven in by a phaser shot.
You gasped, stumbling back through his office tripping over the coffee table centre piece of the room. Leonard moved towards you. Unable to take your eyes off the hole in his face as your hands dripped with blood and guilt you expelled your body weight willing the pull door to push open. Leonard’s hands levelled either side of the door frame his face close to yours. Ears muffled and knees giving way you pressed your eyes shut concealing the scene.
“Y/N?” Leonard asked after a few moments of stillness before lifting one of your eyelids shining his torch in each eye. As you readjusted to the light you saw Leonard’s face again, clean of everything but concern. You glanced round the room to find the coffee table the only thing out of place and your hands sweating but clean. You reached for Leonard pulling him in towards you. His hands swept round your back and he pressed a kiss into your temple.
“What” he asked, “the hell was that?”
“Felt like my dream.” You said performing exercises to convince Leonard you did not have a head injury without him asking.
“And you often have dreams of murderous me?” Leonard dissolved, guiding you towards the seats in the middle of the room, straightening the coffee table.
“No. I often have dreams of murderous me.”
Curious and cautious Leonard sat opposite you and reached for your hand. He pulled back sharply at first “You’re iced.” He clasped both your hands in his and puffed a long warm breath between them. Slowly your anxiety began to melt. The breath was real. The warmth was real.
“Every night I have a dream, eerily like an away mission, only the faces are swapped and I know who I’m killing. And then, I wake up and watch them die on my floor and my body screams at me to wake up and help them but I’m frozen. I can’t move.”
“Sleep paralysis?” Leonard asked still rubbing your hands between his own.
“That would be my guess. Every morning. Some nights I can’t face it.”
“What do you do those nights?”
“I stay up. Sit on the ground and think about all the lives I’ve taken in a job where I’m supposed to save them.” You stood up and walked towards the window in Leonard’s office, poking open the blinds to view the busy medbay. You sighed at the internal architecture of the ship. “It’s like I’m not real. I exist within grey walls or as a killing machine.” You slumped back down in the chair.
Leonard leaned forward slipping his hand round the back of your neck, scratching the base of your hair line. He held eye contact with you and sincerely stated, “You’re quite dramatic.”
“Week after week, Leonard. Every time I shut my eyes I see you or Jim or- or Chekov lifeless because of me! Makes you think of what those lives I’ve ended meant to someone else.” You stood up again walking towards the blinds, poking them open slightly hoping to see a different landscape. “And why does this ship have no exterior windows! Would it kill them to let me see the stars? Remind me where I came from.” Spitting the end vehemently towards Starfleet architects.
“Why don’t you come and stay with me for a while?” Leonard placed a hand on your shoulder, his other hand working the blinds out of your fingers before you broke them. “A change of scenery might do some good.”
“Aren’t you going to tell me I need to work through my guilt and reconceptualise my relationship with my job?”
“You’re a damn fine doctor Y/N. You don’t need me to tell you that, you just need a clear head to realise it for yourself.”
Leonard led you out of the medbay shouting a mere, “I’m a doctor, not a motivational speaker damnit.” In place of his weekly briefing.
Together you walked the length of the ship. Leonard asked you more about your dreams presenting it as conversational but you could see the medical cogs in his brain turning. “You’ve never had psychological training?” Leonard asked at one point with a startled stopping of his feet.
“Psychological training? What med school did you go to?” Scoffing at his faith in The Academy.
“Not med school, but I did a fair whack before I joined Jim’s ground team. You’ve never had- my god! No wonder you’re wracked with guilt darlin’ that is- that is- how did you ever end up planetside?”
“I don’t know I’m just pretty handy with a phaser I guess.” You said as you arrived at a door with the letters C.M.O emblazed on the front. “Nice door. How come I’ve never been here?”
Leonard shrugged “ ‘s not my fault you prefer the desk.” He stated opening the door to his double sized room.
Smooth navy covered the walls, beautifully contrasting the deep wooden furniture and shelves of brown bottles. Surrounded by whiffs of comforting warm fires and cheap rum you watched as Leonard ordered on the lights and followed him through to the next room. There was no doubt that Leonard lived a full life back home. His living space was full of southern knick-knacks and photographs of people you’d never known. There was a small collection of silver neck chains on show, thoroughly worn although never while on shift and nine or ten small stacks of crime novels strewn across the floor.
“This might cheer you up sweetheart.” Leonard tossed his PADD onto his cracked brown leather couch and made his way to the back wall which was entirely concealed by a deep purple curtain. Taking a bundle of the thick fabric in his hands, he eyed you before trudging it across the room revealing a vast ceiling to floor window. You caught your reflection in the glass and clapped your mouth shut looking to Leonard in shock.
“Bit of a sick joke for an aviophobiac.” Leonard physically shuddered at the open black, “But if it makes you happy it’s worth it.”
Bounding over the top of Leonards sofa to get a better look, you gazed out over the space you’d called home for past three years. Something about the infinite expanse always grounded you. The lack of endings and the billions of possibilities that presented made all of your worries and problems seem positively insignificant. It left you searing with luck to be living regardless. You moved even closer letting your breath fog up the glass. Leonard moved behind you hugging you round the middle and resting his chin on your shoulder.
“Look at it Leonard. Isn’t it just-”
“Horrifying?”
“Do you really look at that and feel nothing?” You were aghast at the thought.
Leonard sighed “I appreciate the sentiment of it.” He concluded. “It reminds me of a Jorge Luis Borges quote.”
“I didn’t realise you were so well read.” You both shared another moment of genuine laughter, “What’s the quote?”
“He says, ‘I’m not sure I exist, actually. I am all the writers that I have read, all the people I have met, all the women that I have loved;” He squeezed your arm as he spoke “All the cities I have visited.’ Reminds me of you actually. All the lives you’ve saved in the medbay and planeside. You leave a part of you everywhere you go; that’s what I think is beautiful, doll.”
You turned to him. He held your gaze firmly and you knew he meant the words he’d spoken. You rested your head against his chest silently thanking him for his kindness, you knew he’d never let you say it out loud. This wasn’t your home, but Leonard smelled of home for we all leave a part of ourselves in those we love.
Together you turned the couch to face the window and under Leonard’s duvet slept a full night of dreamless sleep woken only by a PADD dropped on your chest with the same force you’d dropped at Leonard yesterday.
“Five days in the medbay.” He gestured towards the open rota displayed on the screen, “Two days off. Including Sunday.”

Curing a Rainy Day
A sort of five times Star Trek gen fic for your viewing pleasure. I mentioned I would write it but please be aware that I wrote this on my phone late at night and I has no beta. Typos and mistakes will be found. 🤣

Sulu:
Leonard McCoy wasn’t a huge touchy-feely type of man. Well, that’s what he really wants folks to think anyway. He was a doctor and that meant it was his oath-bound duty to cure what ails his patients. Whether it was from a physical malady or an emotional one. The first time he initiated his “Rainy Day Cure” --title courtesy of his daughter-- to one of the command crew he was surprised that it was Sulu of all people. If Len were being honest he thought it would have been Jim. Sure he had hugged the kid in the past but he always let Jim be the one to initiate contact. The reason why is complicated and a story for another time.
When he found him the young pilot was huddled alone in Observation Room Five, his shoulders hunched, his down so his eyes were hidden and mind lightyears away. Leonard had a feeling he knew where. The chaos after Khan and Marcus had caused a lot of damage, and not all of it was physical. They were all still healing even a year later. They had left Kronos not three hours ago and according to the mission report, Sulu’s younger sister was…
Not who she claimed to be. ‘Yuki,’ McCoy recalled her name lamely as he made his way loudly over to the depressed man.
She revealed that she worked for Section 31 and was determined to fix the Federation the right way. Though the term “Right way” is skewed for many folks. War was almost started, again and the Enterprise had to stop it, again. Section 31 now had the last little pebble of Red Matter and was holding it like a…” Nuclear deterrent” as the old saying goes.
Shaking his head Leonard pushed recent events to the back of his mind and continued on his own mission. Plopping down on the couch that faced the giant window of stars, McCoy leaned forward so his elbows rested on his knees.
He didn’t offer his apologies or sympathies, he knew Sulu didn’t want them. So they sat in silence. Sulu just shook his head and looked up at the doctor with confusion and betrayal in his eyes. “I don’t - I” he stopped swallowing and the helmsman looked so young Leonard didn’t even think about it until after he had already done it.
He wrapped an arm over Hikaru’s shoulder and squeezed. Sulu stilled for a moment before relaxing and saying what needed to be said, a weight slowly lifting off his shoulders and his chest.
Scotty:
Leonard and Scotty were both having a terrible terrible time. The cold sucked in Leonard’s opinion and being trapped on an ice ball of a planet only confirmed his feelings. Looking over at the Enterprises Chief Engineer, Leonard had a feeling that he wasn’t alone in his thoughts and feelings.
The Scot was curled into a tight ball up against the last running console the entire ‘Fleet base had. He was shivering and muttering to himself, glaring at the distress signal he had rigged up. There was nothing they could do but wait. Rubbing his hands together to warm them Leonard moved toward the console and slid down to the floor next to Scotty. Touching shoulders with Scotty, McCoy tucked his hands under his arms and sighed. There was nothing he could really say to ease the engineer’s anxiety -- which stemmed from Delta Vega no doubt --  so he simply let his presence be enough.
Scotty glanced at Leonard to see that he was looking back at him with calm understanding. Grunting Scotty curled himself closer to the CMO and let the man wrap an arm around his shoulders. They didn’t speak a word and only moved when they heard the sounds of the rescue party on the other side of the sealed doors.
Chekov:
Pavel Chekov was the youngest of the command crew, so he was automatically protected and treated like the youngest sibling of a giant family. The navigator understood that his friends didn’t mean to and that it was just sometimes a reflex but he was getting damn tired of it. Today was his birthday, he had finally turned twenty! Chekov was so pleased to find that after the incident with Khan he was being treated like he should. There was one person who always treated him like he was young and precious.
Pavel found that he didn’t mind so much. Doctor McCoy treated almost everyone that way -- even though he wasn’t that much older than the rest of them --  in an almost fatherly manner. A true caretaker. Chekov allowed the behavior from no one but McCoy.
Leonard walked into “Rec Room Two” taking in the crowd with a softening scowl. A small wrapped parcel gripped in his hand. He looked down at the present, weighing it in his hands carefully.  With a sigh, McCoy strode through the room looking for the birthday boy. Jim waved at him wildly from the other side of the room a huge grin on his face. Narrowing his eyes, Leonard saw that his captain wasn’t in fact drunk at all. Grunting in approval he smiled at Chekov who was hurrying over to greet him.
“Happy Birthday Pavel,”
Chekov grinned and his eyes widened at the present presented to him. Leonard gestured for him to open it and the young man did excitedly. The wrapping paper littered the floor a long black box in its place. Slowly opening the box the navigator knocked a silver antique pocket knife into his hands. Examining it closely he looked up at McCoy in confusion.
Leonard shifted nervously on his feet. Clearing his throat he pulled out a similar from his belt. “My daddy gave me this one to match his when I turned twenty. I know your pa wasn’t around as you grew up and so I thought…” his sentence fell into silence. For once Leonard McCoy was at a loss for words. Pavel quickly wiped a stray tear from his eye and grinned at his friend holding onto the gift tightly.
“Thank you doctor!” he said gratefully and Leonard understood that it was for more than just a knife. A small smile graced the CMO’s lips and pulled the kid in for a hug.
With anyone else, Pavel would have been annoyed. This was an exception.
Uhura:
Leonard was tired. He longed for his bed but as he looked around at all of the injured crew he pushed the longing away. There was no time for it. Rubbing the blurry fatigue from his eyes he pushed on. Triage, surgery, aftercare. He really didn’t truly stop to breathe until the middle of gamma shift when the ship was sleepy and quiet. The only noise was the soft beeps and whistles of monitors. His nurses quietly whispering and working.
Christine hours ago told him to stop worrying and to go to bed already but something in him just couldn’t. Blinking dumbly down at the PADD in his hands he sighed and signed off on the next round of Spock’s antibiotics. During the Enterprises most recent scuffle the bridge took a hit and the science station exploded sending the first officer flying, earning him a ticket to medical.
After the fight was over and things had only calmed down to a trickle of wounded instead of a flash flood, Nyota Uhura breezed through sickbay’s doors. She waited patiently and even helped where she could. When Spock came out of surgery and was placed in a private room she immediately went to his side and hasn’t moved an inch since. Jim would have been right beside her if he could afford to. But it appears the admiralty wanted words and had kept him busy since. McCoy had barely just convinced him to get some sleep saying that he would call if anything changes.
That was three hours ago.
Leonard walked -- though Nyota would say shuffled -- into Spock’s room, his eyes going straight to the monitors above the bed. The half Vulcan was resting peacefully. McCoy knew it was only a matter of time before he woke and would go into a healing trance. Something that should be monitored anyway. Leonard quietly wondered who he would grant the opportunity to slap Spock awake this time…
“Leonard!”
The sound of his name made the CMO snap his head in Uhura’s direction. Her eyes were fire, filled with frustration, exhaustion, and worry. McCoy winced, “Sorry Nyota, guess my mind wandered a bit,” he said somewhat sheepishly. Her expression softened a flash of guilt passing through her features.
“You need more rest. You’re going to run yourself into the ground at this rate,” she scolded half-heartedly. McCoy gave her a small smile and a shrug,
"I'll rest when I'm not needed." He whispered and badly covered up a yawn. The hidden meaning behind his words wasn't lost on the linguist though. She pressed her lips into a tight line deciding not to comment. Instead, she rested her gaze on Spock once more her hand inches away from his.
So deep in thought, Nyota hadn't even realized that McCoy had left and come back, a tray with a couple of hypos in his always unwavering hands. Catching her eyes he gave her another encouraging smile. He took care to tell her everything he was doing and how it would help keep infection away. Leonard knew he didn't have to explain but he felt it necessary to fill the quiet with "Illogical chatter" as Spock would surely call it.
Uhura was so tired and so frazzled that she was startled to find the CMO crouching in front of her with concern all over his face. "You need to get some rest Nyota. I can have a cot brought in if you'd like…"
Uhura, let a few tears fall before she bottled it up again. She shook her head wiping her face, "I'm alright Leo. Everything is just catching up to me…" she mumbled with a watery chuckle. Leonard snorted at the nickname she had given him,
"Just let me know darlin' "
And without truly thinking about it he pulled her into a hug. It only took Uhura a second to process what was happening before she wrapped her arms around him tightly. A genuine smile breaking across her face. The first time in hours she felt content, safe, and able to truly breathe.
Jim:
James T. Kirk was a touchy-feely type of man. Leonard supposed it may be from a less than stellar childhood. So whenever Jim would pull him into a one-armed hug or slapped his back or even leaned up against him, McCoy would let him. He would definitely bitch but only half-heartedly, Leonard needed to keep up appearances after all.
So when they found Jim partially dead, hanging from his wrists in a cave all smirks and charm…
Well, no one batted an eye when -- after he made sure that the man would live -- Leonard pulled his best friend in for a hug. Jim just laughed, laid an arm over McCoy's shoulder, and leaned into the hug.
"I only had to get tortured and offered to an alien God for you to hug me. Good to know,"
"Shut up Kid,"
Spock:
No one ever thought the words McCoy, Spock, and hug would ever be uttered but stranger things have happened on the Enterprise.
No stranger than an alien device that turned back time. In a physical sense anyway. Leonard looked down at his adolescent hands and sighed with a heavy eye roll. "Not this again," he grumbled with a shudder.
Looking around the room he saw Jim shouting at Mudd who had bought the alien weapon and decided to point it at him and Spock. McCoy tilted his head, his eyes going comically wide.
Spock!
Where was the green-blooded rugrat? Leonard looked around and sighed in relief at the sight of the first officer. He was hidden under a rickety wooden table. Crouching down Leonard gave Spock a small smile, he waved and gestured for the Vulcan to come closer. Apparently the younger you go the further your mind goes with it. Spock had a mentality of a...of well, a toddler. He couldn't have been more than two.
Spock stared at Leonard intensely before darting out and crashing into his legs. McCoy stumbled a little before he got his footing. Spock looked up at him with wide scared eyes, tears threatening to fall. 'Must have gotten all Vucan-y at four or five,' Leonard thought as he picked up his friend.
Leonard pulled Spock close, hugging him to his chest whispering softly. Spock seemed confused for only a moment before he buried his head into the young CMO's neck.
Jim of course saw it all and later under the threat of meeting his end via an airlock kept his mouth firmly shut. The only thing the Starship Captain said -- which everyone agreed-- Doctor Leonard McCoy could absolutely cure a rainy day.

The Monster Maker
I could have sworn J. Carroll Naish was on MST3K at some point but the only thing I can find from his filmography that has appeared on this blog is Dracula vs Frankenstein, in which he played Dr. D'Ray.  Not that it matters.  The Monster Maker's producer, Sigmund Neufeld, also brought us MST3K feature The Mad Monster, and writer Sam Newfield penned both that film and I Accuse my Parents (not to mention the world's only all-midget cowboy musical, Terror of Tiny Town), but mostly I'm watching this movie because... well, you know, it sucks.
I know what you're thinking, and as far as I can tell, no, Sigmund Neufeld and Sam Newfield are not the same guy who's just bad at pseudonyms.
Anthony Lawrence is one of the world's greatest pianists, but with a concert tour finished he's looking forward to relaxing and spending some time with his daughter Patricia and her fiance Bob.  Sadly, this is not to be, as Patricia has come to the attention of Dr. Igor Markov, who believes her to be the reincarnation of his dead wife Leonora.  He spends weeks harassing poor Pat, until her father storms over to Markov's office to tell him where he can shove his attentions. Little does Lawrence know he's walking into a trap.  Markov has been experimenting on animals in his basement, and if Lawrence doesn't hand over Patricia, the next syringe is for him!
Tumblr media
I have mixed feelings about this movie.  It surprisingly subverts several tropes of the mad scientist movie, including some it deliberately sets up only to pull the rug out from under them, resulting in a surprisingly happy ending.  On the other hand, it does this in ways that aren't always very satisfying, and its treatment of the disabled is frightful.
For an illustrative example, let's take Dr. Markov's caged gorilla.  The movie never tells us why he has a caged gorilla.  He says it's vital to his work but we never see him do anything much with it... I assume it's there because the caged gorilla was a standard part of the mad scientist lab equipment in the 1940s and 50s.  The only time we see him interact with it is when he sets it loose in the middle of the night to murder his traitorous assistant, Maxine, who had threatened to go to the police.  We cut to the gorilla back in its cage the next morning, and we assume Maxine is dead – only to have her walk in and tell us that her protective dog drove the gorilla back to the lab.
This is kind of a fun moment, not only because it's a surprise but because everything in it was set up, not just the gorilla but the animosity between it and the dog.  It also enables the eventual happy ending – after Markov is killed, Patricia worries that nobody else will be able to help her father. However, Maxine is familiar with Markov's work, and assures her that Lawrence will be just fine with a few weeks of treatment.  That's all quite nice for a mad scientist movie of this vintage!  It's also interesting in that it tells us these tropes were around to be subverted – that audiences in 1944 had already seen enough stupid mad scientist movies to know that the gorilla is supposed to kill the traitorous assistant and that the ending is supposed to be a tragedy.
Tumblr media
The problem is that this leaves the gorilla with no reason to be in the movie at all besides to fake us out.  It ultimately has no effect on the plot whatsoever other than to establish Markov as a bastard, which by now we already knew.  You cannot put Chekov's Gorilla in a cage in act one, wave it around in act two before putting it back with a 'psych!', and then not have it break somebody's neck in act three.  It still has to do something, or you're just being a tease.
The fact that Maxine is able to cure Lawrence speaks to the fact that The Monster Maker is surprisingly respectful of its women.  Maxine is quite intelligent and knows her love for Markov is self-destructive, but feels she has devoted too much of her life to him to leave him now.  Patricia is a less substantial character, but her father treats her with great respect – when Markov demands Patricia in exchange for a cure, Lawrence continues to refuse even after the mad doctor has robbed him of his friends, his passion, and his career.  Pat's fiance Bob has fewer principles, as he repeatedly lies to her in the belief that he is protecting her from the truth, but this too is presented as the wrong thing to do and I hope we're meant to believe Bob learns from it. The screenwriters' general attitude seems to be that women should be allowed to make up their own minds about things.
Markov, as the villain, is also the movie's misogynist, and this is in no way subtle.  He wants to marry Patricia because she resembles Leonora – and that's it.  Her personality, her background, and her wishes mean nothing to him.  All he cares about is her face.  What she represents to him is an attempt to undo the wrong he did to Leonora herself.  We eventually learn that Leonora left him for another man, and in revenge he injected her with his monster juice.  He had hoped that her new love would leave her because she was no longer beautiful, but in fact Leonora committed suicide because she couldn't stand to look at herself in the mirror.
Tumblr media
This tends to make one wonder what would have happened if Leonora had tried to crawl back to Markov.  At the time this happened, he didn't yet have a cure for his creations.  Would he have gone on to find one sooner in order to help her?  Or would he, too, have rejected her now that she was ugly?  I kind of suspect the latter.  He's only sorry about any of this because she died.  He wanted her back less than he wanted her to live in misery, knowing that without her looks she would have no value.
Interestingly, this also applies somewhat to Lawrence.  As his condition progresses, he locks himself in his room and puts records on so that nobody will realize he is now unable to play the piano... but he also keeps the lights off and refuses to admit anybody, too ashamed to show his face.  Ugliness apparently makes both sexes unfit company for the rest of us.
Markov himself speaks with a German accent despite having a Russian name. He manages to be slightly less creepy than the Great Vorelli or Dr. Carlo Lombardi, but only because he never resorts to rape via hypnosis.  Upon realizing he has found a cure for a terrible disease, his first reaction is to triumphantly declare that he can charge whatever he wants for it... eighty years later, that's still depressingly relevant.
So all this is okay and at times fairly progressive for the 1940s, but now we have to get into The Monster Maker's attitude towards the disabled.  I've been a little cagey about exactly what it is Dr. Markov is doing to his victims, and you've probably been picturing some sort of mutagen that makes them go all lumpy and melty like that guy in Robocop. Unfortunately, no.  Remember acromegaly, the hormonal disorder that Richard Kiel and Rondo Hatton suffered from?  Yeah.  Markov has a bottle of it in his cupboard.
Tumblr media
I don't know how you bottle acromegaly, but at least they did better than the people who made Tarantula and fucking spelled it right.
Acromegaly is not a cheerful diagnosis.  Lawrence's doctor tells him it's not fatal, but that isn't always true – a lot of sufferers, including Hatton, die from the complications.  It disfigures the head, hands, and feet, and would definitely be a devastating disease for a pianist... all of which makes it that much worse that this stupid movie keeps using the word 'monster'.  Lawrence even describes himself as such, comparing his situation to that of Frankenstein's Monster and declaring that he will similarly kill Markov for what he has done to him.  In the end he does exactly that, and the movie never addresses it on any level besides 'boy, good thing the bad guy is dead!'
This is probably because, clearly, the real monster Markov has made is himself... but that's subtext.  In the text, his monsters are his overgrown pigs and Anthony Lawrence.  I just blasted Tarantula for spelling the name of the condition incorrectly, but that movie at least did not even imply that its human acromegaliacs were 'monsters'.  They were in every way victims, even when their sufferings were as a result of experimenting on themselves.  Lawrence is also a victim, but the movie plays up the 'monster' idea in more than just the title: Lawrence's condition also makes him restless and prone to violence, as he repeatedly attacks Markov and at one point must be tied to a bed to prevent him doing so.  Markov suggests that this is a side effect of the hormonal problems, but Lawrence's own belief that he's becoming a 'monster' also appears to have something to do with it.
In the end, this movie is way too much like The Brute Man, in telling us that the ugly and disabled can never be an accepted part of society.  Hal Moffat was forced into the shadows, while Anthony Lawrence takes to them voluntarily, but for the same reason: ugliness is made for gawking at, not for normal relationships such as that between partners, or parents and children.  Fuck that.

Goof Week: House of Mouse: Super Goof or Wish I Could Fly Like Super Goof (Patreon Review for WeirdKev27)
+
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy gorshers and welcome back to Goof Week, my week long celebration of Goofy’s 89th Birthday. And today I take my once a month trip down to the house of mouse as part of my patron kev’s yearlong celebration of the show’s 20th anniversary. And since I had this theme week in mind I asked him if it’d be okay if he strictly randomized goofy episodes, he said yes and here we are.
Luck was on my side as I got what I remembered was one of my faviorite episodes of the show. But before I can get if it lived up to the hype or not a brief word on Super Goof.
Super Goof is actually from the comics, first debuting in a story where Goofy thought he had super powers and fought the Phantom Blot in a cowboy hat.
Tumblr media
This concept was a hit so in 1965 Goofy was made a superhero for real with Super Goof #1. This dosen’t suprise me: this was the height of the silver age: The Lee and Kirby age of Marvel was in full swing and DC was still doing gangbusters. So there was market for a superhero spoof comic starring one of Disney’s best and brightest characters, who was given a bunch of super peanuts called super goobers to give him superman powers.  What DOES surprise me is the series lasted 74 issues from 65-84. And what’s more insane and wonderful? It didn’t get canceled because of low sales or anything. That was simply when Gold Key shut down... and Gold Key was FOUNDED three years before it meaning this book lasted the company’s ENTIRE lifespan. I’ll say that again, a book about goofy eating peanuts that started because of a story where goofy thought he was a superhero and fought a cowboy phantom blot, lasted 74 issues and only ended because the publisher shut down. That... is one of the most amazing things I have ever heard in my life. I’m genuinely impressed... this isn’t even a bad concept, I likes it and wish Disney would give it a full series. Farmer could do wonders with it. I’m just amazed that this odball little comic took off like it did. And as one final fun fact much like Superman, Super Goof set off the trend of Disney’s classic characters becoming heroes, with Donald’s own Papernik/Duck Avenger following in his footsteps. I REALLY want a Disney Superhero Verse in animatoin now, I know there was a mini series like that. And I will have to visit these comics at some point I just simply didn’t have room in the week with a movie review tomorrow. .
So with all that out of the way how does Super Goof do on screen and does the episode hold up? Join me under the cut to find out.
Tumblr media
As usual for HOM I’ll be doing the shorts and overarching story seperate soooo
Tumblr media
How To To Take Care of Your Yard:
Look anyone whose read my stuff or even just my goofy shorts special  will know how much I love the How To Shorts and how this series is responsible. This admittedly isn’t one of the BEST of them.. but it’s still fun to watch. Even a forgettable How To Short is still GOOD. It’s abotu Goofy taking care of his yard over the four seasons and has some decent gags but nothing really standout.  I Honestly DO wish I had more to say but this one’s just okay and it woudln’t stick out as much if both the wraparound and the other short weren’t so spectacular. Speaking of which.
Tumblr media
Locksmiths: This is one of the few shorts I VIVIDLY remembered from childhood and for damn good reason. This is THE best short i’ve seen so far for House of Mouse this year and for good reason. The premise is simple enough: The Golden Trio are locksmiths.. who end up getting locked inside their own office just after Minnie calls with something urgent to tell them.
The results are comic gold, with the standout bits being Goofy’s keys which is just such a wonderful hurricane of puns with some great visual gags to start it off that I can’t help but love it
youtube
There’s TONS of other good stuff too: The boys fishing for the key, Mickey opening a ton of doors in a sequence MST3K would be proud of and the finale with the boys falling out the office. This is a true , hilarious classic and my words can’t really do it justice. Seek this one out on it’s own or in the episode you will not regret it. A true classic for Disney Shorts period.
Tumblr media
Super Goof:
So onto the main story. Goofy asks Clarabelle out and she’s not only incredibly receptive but simply asks to check her schedule.. which he interprets as no.  I would make a joke here but i’ts clear from previous episodes HOM goofy has Low Self Esteem: he was utterly crushed not having a valentine and by his friends all wishing he could be less Goofy. So him overreacting like this is in character and comes off as endearing: it’s not that he thinks so low of her he’d think sh’ed pull something like this.. it’s that he’s so doubtful of someone liking him for who he is deep down he self sabotages something I can PAINFULLY relate to as that’s one of my biggest personal issues hands down.
So outside presumably on break...
Tumblr media
Not THAT kind of break. Though since I bring it up: they both were wrong. They WERE on a break, and it was wrong of tweedle dee and tweedle dum there to keep needling it ESPECIALLY since their the ones who TOLD HIM to hide his sleeping with the waitress and took NO responsibility for that. Rachel treating it like an affair constantly when she’s the one who wanted space and didn’t give him any paramerters for said is fucking terrible. It’s telling that in the reunion trailer everyone but Matthew LeBlanc, who was clearly just having some fun agreed they were.  That being said Ross still slept with someone five seconds after being on said break, still listneed to the two of them on hiding it when it was a bad idea, and STILL caused said break by being a clingy asshole to such a degree even his previous history of being cheated on does not justify or excuse how badly he treated Rachel. What i’m saying is they both sucked, and thus deserved each other, and by the end NEITHER was remotely likeable, with both having done terrible things both in said will they or won’t they hellscape and outside it, with Ross dating a student and Rachel dating her assistant.
Anyways after that thing I clearly needed to get off my chest, we get a narration informing us a METEOR IS COMING and it strikes the peanuts Goofy’s depression snacking on, as a result he becomes SUPER GOOF! And after a display of his powers with various disney characters (finding Gepetto and Pinocchio in a whale, saving the dalmations from cruella , lifting the giant from the littlest tailor) and finds he has a narrator. No really Goofy notices and is not happy about it despite all superheros having one. I mean he’s not wrong, look what the X-Men’s did to  Cyclops:
Tumblr media
But regardless he has him and Goofy flies through the air with the quickest of ease through the house of mouse impressing everyone who has no idea he’s goofy. This gag is a carry over from the comics and a transparent parody of the superman clark kent thing. But it works because Goofy still uses his name in costume, still has his hat and really changes nothing about his appearance. It’s simple but sometimes you just need a very simple gag to work and overxplaning it spoils the whole thing. Trust me I know as a certified experinced fuck up.
So after the first cartoon Super Goofy guest stars, and we get some neat gags with the disney movie characters, though my faviorite is Peter Pan’s reactoin of “He Can fly he can fly he can fly, big deal. Anyone can do that”. It’s both perfectly in character and utterly hilarious.
Goofy however starts to feel disheartneed as everyone compliments him.. and Minnie says he’s better than a regular goofy as do the others minus Mickey because he’s a good egg. And Clarabelle but he misinertperts her like of super goof as her liking him better as that.
So fed up with everyone liking him better, Goofy throws away the peanuts, which he kept in his hat.. though one did fall in his waiter’s uniform. Remember that. The narrator questions if this is really the end and what if there’s peril but Goofy’s stubbornly instiant he won’t do it no matter what.
Cue the what: another MUCH LARGER metor heading straight for Mainstreet
Tumblr media
Goofy refuses to summon super goof despite the danger... Mickey has an apt response for him
Tumblr media
This is the one scene I don’t really like: Goofy has a righ tto be upset they all prefer someone who just showed up hours ago over him, especially beceause it IS him, to the point Daisy was upset she got a picture of goofy instead of super goofy because J Jonah Jameson’s not going to pay for pictures of his next door neighbor. But Mickey has a right to not want to die horribly in a cataclysm of fire.
So Goofy mopes off like his son to go save the world, fine whatever. Only as is cartoon law, the trash has been picked up meaning he dosen’t have any goobers.. except the CHEKOVS GOOBER. With it he chews it, flies up and has a truly impressive display holding it back while it’s just over clarabelle before dispoising of it. he hits on her in super form but she says she already has  date with regular goofy. Goofy’s confidence is restored, he’s probably getting laid tonight and we close on a Mike add for a school for Goofy’s. How much is tution.. asking for a me.
Final Thoughts: This wraparound was great, a few small flaws but it has a great, engaging charcter driven story with some delightfully silly jokes that are right up my ally. It’s easy to see besides my love of superheroes why this one stood out to me: It’s funny, heartwrenching and stars one of my faviorite character.
The shorts are also good, one that’s okay , a bit too long but not bad, and one that’s an utter masterpiece. In fact the only reason the first short feels so long is you really want to get back to the main plot fast,  and that’s not a bad problem to have. This was an excellen tepisode and I recommend seeing it out.
Before I get to my whole patreon speil, i’d like to say that House of Mouse STILL is not avaliable on Disney+ for reasons that haven’t been made clear. As such it’s on my Not Streaming List, a list I keep and update reguarly of shows that SHOULD be streaming on a particular service and have no clear reason NOT to be such as musical rights issues like the ones likely keeping shows like Drew Carrey, Northern Exposure and Murphy Brown off streaming. So check that out if your curious, link is on my main page and hit me up if you have any suggestoins for it.
So thank you for reading and if you liked this review give it a like and consider joining my patreon at patreon.com/popculturebuffet. As a patron you’d get access to exclusive reviews, the patreon’s discord and to pick a short each time I do one of these shortstaculars. Donald’s comnig next month and the deadline is in only a few days to join up for said month so the clock is ticking. Even a dollar a month helps me reach my stretch goals so please i fyou can sign up today and if not, I understand and i’ll see you at the next rainbow

And We Do It All Again - Chapter 7
Summary: Jim has two big problems right now. The first is that he is hopelessly in love with his First Officer and his Chief Medical Officer, and neither seems to return his feelings. The second is that he’s stuck in a time loop where his ship is destroyed and his crew killed, over and over again.
Things can never be simple for James T. Kirk, can they?
Warnings: angst, (temporary) character death, swearing, time loops, suicide attempt in a later chapter (again, it’s in a time loop so it doesn’t really work)
Pairing: McSpirk
Chapter 7 of 7

A/N: Can also be read here on AO3!
-
Jim woke and sighed, his eyes catching the chess board, the whiskey glasses. A familiar sight by now. He thought about the confessions.
Without another thought, he rolled in his bed and grabbed his communicator. Bones and Spock arrived together, just as Jim finished pulling on his uniform.
"Jim, is all well?"
"Seriously, you better be dying. I was still asleep!"
"I need to tell you both something." Jim informed them, watching them enter the room from his seat on the bed.
"It couldn't wait until breakfast?"
"It's waited long enough." Jim looked at them both, love and a desperate need for them to know rising in him. "This may sound insane, but I promise, I am mentally and physically fine. Bones, you can even check after this, if you want." He began calmly. Both looked concerned, but he continued before they could interrupt. "I am in love with both of you. Have been for a while."
There was a long silence, a moment where they both just stared at her. Then, Spock spoke.
"Captain, I must ask, what has caused this outburst?"
Jim shrugged. "It needed to be said. I'm tired of hiding it." He was so damn tired. It had been so long and he was just so tired. It felt good to admit this. After the last few cycles, it almost felt natural.
"Jim, stop messing around."
"I'm not." He shrugged. "I'm in love with both of you. Whatever happens next is up to you guys. I don't expect anything, but I needed you to know."
"T'hy'la." The word was whispered reverently, Spock's voice shaking. Jim felt a smile tugging at his face despite his exhaustion.
Bones glanced between the two then straightened, shaking his head. "Idiots." He mumbled, turning for the door. Jim rose to stop him, but Spock beat him to it. Spock caught the doctor's wrist and pulled him back. "Leonard. Please, do not leave. I- I must confess, I have also been harboring feelings for both of you as well."
Bones didn't look convinced. "Look, you two are great for each other. You don't need me mucking it up. Just- let me go with my dignity."
"Shut up, Bones." Jim couldn't think of a time when his heart had felt so full.
"I must agree, Leonard."
"This is insane. Actually insane. You just wanna jump into a polygamous relationship? What's the crew gonna say?"
"It's the 23rd century, Bones. I think it'll be okay. And we don't need to rush into anything. Like I said, I don't expect anything. I just... I needed you to know."
"Perhaps we should continue this conversation after our respective shifts. It is nearly time for us to be on the bridge, Jim."
Jim nodded. "We can meet here at 2300, okay? We'll figure out what this all means." The promise of later felt so abstract, so unreal, but it was what they'd expect him to offer. So he offered it.
"Affirmative."
"I guess."
Jim stepped forward, love washing over him as he took the two in. Then, he grabbed Bones and pulled him into a tight hug. "I love you, Bones."
Bones returned the hug. "Love you too, kid." His voice was gruff, but Jim knew better.
In the turbolift with Spock, Jim put a hand on his First Officer's bicep. "I know touch is sacred to Vulcans, so I don't expect anything. I just want you to know I love you."
Spock looked at him, face as calm as Jim had ever seen it. "I love you as well, Jim."
It should have made him happy. Here was Spock, saying he loved him. After everything, it should have been a relief. Somehow it only managed to break his heart.
"Captain on the bridge!"
He sat through his shift, sneaking glanced at Spock (who was doing the same to him) and hating everything. It had been shockingly easy. They weren't his yet, but they were willing to talk. They were both interested.
Well, Spock was. Bones hadn't said it explicitly, but Jim could remember how he'd kissed him, how he'd gripped him. He knew Bones loved him. He suspected he'd always known, deep down. Until now, he'd just been too afraid to allow himself to hope. Of course, now knowing that didn't do him much good. Not when he'd wake tomorrow starting all over again.
"Sir, there's an unidentified ship approaching."
There it was. The worst ship in the galaxy. If only he could stop it. Steer the ship to some safe location. Maybe get aboard it and-
Get aboard it.
An idea hit him hard and he jumped up, body in motion even before his mind had fully considered this new plan. "Mr. Sulu, shields up! Mr. Spock, take the con!"
"Captain-"
"Do it, that's an order!" He called, already sprinting from the room.
He commed Scotty to meet him in the transporter room. They both arrived just as the first hit shook the ship. Jim jumped onto the platform, the seconds ticking away in his head. "Beam me onto that ship!"
"Sir, I don't know if-"
"That's an order!"
Scotty's eyes widened and he began punching buttons, clearly shocked. Jim wasn't one to bark orders like that.
He wasn't sure where he was when he landed, but he had a half-formed plan and that was further than he usually got. Jim took off, squinting at the signs and arrows directing him. As he ran, he shot any and all he came across.
"Enterprise to Captain Kirk!" There was a tightness to Spock's voice. A small shift, something most wouldn't notice. But Jim knew his first officer well. Spock was not pleased with him.
"Kirk here." Jim responded, slightly out of breath as he approached the engineering room.
"Captain, you must beam back aboard the Enterprise immediately. We do not know who is controlling this ship, but they are clearly hostile."
"Can't, Spock. Nothing else is gonna work, they're too strong. I'm taking it down from the inside."
"Captain-"
"Sorry, Spock." Jim snapped the communicator shut and shoved it back into his pocket, just in time. He sprinted into the engineering room, scanning for the most volatile pieces of machinery. It didn't take long to find them. Jim wasn't entirely sure what he was doing. He knew how the Enterprise ran. He knew what to do to keep her happy (though not as happy as Scotty kept her), but this wasn't the Enterprise. It was all cruder, more basic machinery.
Good thing he wasn't trying to keep this ship happy.
"Hey!"
Jim spun, phaser up and firing, but too late. He gasped, grabbing his side as pain seared through him. Huh. Being shot. That was certainly different. Boarding the enemy ship really had opened a world of possibilities.
Still, his aim was true and the last guard was down. He turned back to the equipment and set to work destroying anything he could get his hands on. The timer inside his head was running out. Jim counted himself lucky, then, when something exploded a few feet away from him. The force knocked him down and sent pain up his side, but he ignored it and scrambled to his feet, sprinting for the door.
"Kirk to Enterprise! Requesting immediate beam up, if you have the capability! I repeat, requesting immediate-"
It was too late. Just as he cleared the door, fire engulfed him, catching him and spitting him out. It was somehow just like being on the Enterprise as it exploded and yet so different. Briefly, he was relieved he didn't have to see Bones or Spock die again. As he was thrown out into space, he shut his eyes and let the darkness come, that thought a comfort as he slipped away. Maybe next time he'd figure out how to save them all. Maybe next time, he'd do better.
. . .
He woke slowly and repressed a sigh, keeping his eyes shut this time. Briefly, he wondered if this was a day when he stayed in bed. It was like his pain from the last day had followed him. Everything ached and he was so, so tired. Still, he should probably keep working. Getting aboard the other ship was new. Exploring that might bring new choices. He had to escape this damn loop somehow. There had to be a way. There had to be.
It was just so hard to keep going.
"Jim?"
And now he was hearing things. Great. This damn loop had finally driven him crazy. He thought repeating the same day would keep that from happening, but evidently not. Because now he was hearing Spock's voice, and-
"Jimmy, open your eyes."
And Bones. Great, just great. Like this wasn't hard enough as it was.
"We can see your vitals. We know you're awake."
Might as well get it over with. Sighing softly, Jim let his eyes fall open.
He wasn't in his room.
Immediately, he bolted up, eyes widening and head twisting, searching the area. He was in the sickbay, in a private room. Spock and Bones stood beside him. "Woah, calm down!" Bones grabbed him and forced him back. "You need to lay down!"
"I'm not in my room."
"No, you're not." Bones scowled. "What the hell were you thinking, beaming onto that ship? You're lucky Scotty had the brains to get Chekov to catch you or you'd be dead right now!"
"Chekov caught me?"
"Yeah, after that damn ship blew up and spit you out."
"Wait, the ship- Is the Enterprise okay?"
"Oh for God's sake!"
"Yes, Jim." Spock responded. "There was substantial damage, but because of your early order to put up shields and distraction aboard the other ship, we were able to avoid destruction."
"How many dead?"
"None. Thirty-six injuries, but no deaths."
No deaths. Not a single one.
"We very nearly had one." Bones scowled at Jim, jabbing a hypo into his neck. "You damn fool!"
"Ow, Bones!" Jim complained.
"Don't wanna get hypoed, don't almost get yourself killed!"
"I had to."
"No you didn't!" Bones' eyes were burning. "You pull this damn stunt right after telling us you're in love with us and you expect me to believe you had to? Bullshit!"
"Bones-"
"I was preparing my speech to convince you two to enjoy yourselves without me and then I find out you beamed onto an unknown, hostile ship? Seriously, Jim?"
"I'm sorry."
"You damn well should be! You're an idiot!"
"I am."
Bones stared at him for a long moment, then grabbed him and pulled him into a bruising kiss. "If you'd died before I had a chance to kiss you, I'd have brought you back just to kill you again myself."
"Noted." Jim let out a breathy laugh, chest bubbly with too many emotions to process. He could feel Spock's eyes on him, so he turned and raised two fingers, remembering the Vulcan way of kissing. The corner of Spock's lips turned up and he returned the gesture. Before Jim could speak, however, Spock's other hand curled around the back of Jim's neck. He pulled Jim into a human kiss. It was gentler than Bones', but still filled with emotion.
"As illogical as it is, I must agree with Leonard." He said once they'd pulled apart. "You must learn not to endanger yourself."
Jim let his eyes flutter shut and he laughed again, breathy and tired and so relieved. "I think I can do that. For you two."
Bones snorted. "Yeah right."
"Hey!"
"Lay back down. You still need to rest."
"I'm fine!"
"You were shot, you arm was nearly burned off, and you almost suffocated. Shut up and rest."
"Bones!" Jim moaned, obeying none the less. He let the doctor work, smiling fondly as he grumbled and Spock stood over his bed, watching with those sharp eyes of his. He thought about explaining his actions. Telling them about the loop, about being stuck going through the same day over and over. Giving them the highlights of his experience. But then Spock's fingers pressed rest lightly against his wrist and Bones' hands lingered a moment longer than necessary on his shoulder and he knew he couldn't ruin this. So he lay still and let their presences wash over him.
It was over. The nightmare was finally over. And in this moment, he didn't want to relive any of it. He'd tell them eventually. He'd explain why he'd done what he had, tell them about the highs and lows of his experience, about how much he'd seen and done and felt, but for now he just wanted to remain in the present and let himself feel loved.
And how so very loved he felt.

September 1: 3x06 Spectre of the Gun
Okay so, it might be a little early to declare myself a S3 apologist, since there are still a lot of eps I’ve never seen, but I feel like I’m pretty close..
This ep was so good!! Honestly I think it’s one of my faves. And perfect to usher in Spooky Season.
Honestly, this show really is my happy place. Just all the characters together on the bridge, on some kinda adventure, looking at weird space buoys and investigating stuff.
Again, this buoy looks like a Windows 98 screensaver.
Kirk keeps referring to Spock as “Science Officer.” Is he mad at him? Full of some particularly intense longing that requires him to put extra distance between them?
Excuse me, you address US as aliens? YOU’RE the aliens.
Hmmm, so it seems they’re not friendly.
It’s addressing them in different languages!!! I love it. Love the reminder that Uhura’s first language is not English, also.
“True telepaths are dangerous.” As opposed to fake telepaths like Vulcans lol?
The Melkotians withdrew immediately. They invented space travel, they saw space, and they said “not for us” and they turned around and left. McCoy would like them; they’d have a lot to gripe about together.
The welcome mat is NOT out.
“Unlike Mr. Scott’s transporter, this unit is not functioning.”
It legit looked like Spock put his hand on Kirk’s back there. Like he clearly raises it, but not far enough to be seen above Kirk, so like.. what was the point? Where did it go?
LEE CRONIN--oh no, flashbacks lol.
“We come in peace”--immediately pulls out gun.
I should have watched this when writing my Western fic.
Just bits and pieces of a Western town... and a completely red sky...
The guns are “crude but dangerous.” If only Sulu were here; he’d love this.
An announcement with a specific time and place on it--that’s a very precise detail to just pull from their minds. Must have come from Kirk’s, that nerd. Maybe Spock. But probably Kirk.
“Because my ancestors pioneered the American frontier.” I mean did they really get to the frontier? Or just... the Midwest?
Maybe it’s actually because he’s a cowboy at heart?
Aliens using his own ancestral sins as the pattern for his own death for breaking their law IS a great (possibly partially unintended) idea. Oh also, if they think that Kirk and co. are here to ‘tame’ or colonize them, then the Western setting makes even more sense--you’re no different from your ancestors, you came somewhere new and brought lawlessness and violence and death, but not this time!
Can you believe Kirk knows all of these details about the OK Corral? NERD.
Spock is so proud of himself for knowing the phrase “had it out.” Look, I used slang correctly!
These are some creative aliens.
“We know death is real here.” Or is it? They’re literally telepaths guys.
Hmmm, this building doesn’t need a roof I think. - The aliens probably
Can’t believe Scotty thinks his usual is his actual usual lol. You’re going to drink bourbon and like it!
Kirk and Spock look so good together.
They’re obviously Chekov’s disapproving parents.
“The day is still young, Ensign.” I don’t remember the exact context of this but Spock is SO judgmental.
What is Kirk doing? This guy is a hallucination; he won’t be convinced by touching some cloth. There’s nothing to convince! He’s only a Concept.
“Have you seen clothes like this?” / “Yes.” / “Where?” / “On the Claytons!” Comedy gold.
Kirk really thinks he can charm his way out of anything. Hmmm, maybe if I just talk nicely to the Earps, they won’t kill us.
“In small amounts, it [bourbon] was considered medicinal.” Lol.
Scotty is becoming a bourbon guy!
“Mr. Chekov is inVOLVed” lol. Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
“A lot of people and things have tried to kill me.” No need to brag.
THAT’S how you make a city limits sign. Put a dead animal skull on top. I live quite close to a city limits sign and I think it could use a cow skull.
Western Cossacks!!
Poisonous snakes and cactus plants. That really distills the Aesthetic down to its core.
This is a good Kirk episode. He’s really being a good Captain: coming up with different ideas, being creative, pushing his crew to brainstorm.
Bones and his tranqs again.
Bones meets his old nemesis: Old Timey Medicine.
Why was Doc Holiday just...chilling in his own dentist chair? (My mom suggested: power nap. Let’s go with that. Power nap + ability for optimally dramatic entrance.)
Also I can’t believe McCoy just goes into this guy’s practice and starts helping himself to all the serious drugs.
Chekov definitely isn’t the marrying kind.
RIP Chekov.
Bones does not sound very sympathetic here. Jim, get over it, he just died, whatever.
And then two seconds later he turns around and tells Spock he’s not sad enough! You can’t win.
“We all knew the risk when we joined the service.”
“My feelings are not a subject for discussion.” !!!!!!! This line!!
“You worked closely with him.” Yes! Chekov is his protege!
“Bones, Scotty, stop bullying Spock.” <-- not an actual quote but it might as well be.
If this were AOS, Spock would already be choking Bones out.
Whoops, no one told Chekov he wasn’t supposed to die!
“Let’s organize! Let’s form an anti-Earp union!”
“I can’t kill them!” he says in a mad rage.
I mean, it is important, though. That’s not what he does.
Kirk is /disgusted/ by lawlessness and frontier justice. What a Rebel TM.
I feel like Bones was waiting for the gotcha moment when Spock compliments him. “Saying nice things about me? That’s not how this relationship works!”
“Nothing can go wrong.” / “Up to now, everything has gone wrong.” He has a point.
That pause before Spock admitted it hasn’t been tested lol--they don’t want to admit it.
“[The bourbon’s] for the pain.” / “But this is painless.” / “You should have told me that before.” The unexpected comedy stylings of Scotty and Spock.
It doesn’t work--guess Spock’s got to take back that compliment now.
“Captain, you don’t understand--they’ve been telepaths the whole time which we already knew!”
“We’re not going to move from the spot.” * is immediately in a different spot * Well I mean at least he’s trying. He’s doing his best!
Love the OK Corral sign also. Weirdly creepy. With its accompanying horse.
Spock doesn’t have any hips for the holster to rest on.
“What did Chekov die of?” / “A piece of lead in his body.” That would do it.
If the tranquilizer should have been effective, does that mean Scotty is actually passed out right now?
Honestly, this is all so spooky. TRUE Western Horror Ghost Vibes.
Also very trippy. If you don’t believe it... it’s not real... some kinda weird chicken and the egg argument regarding our belief in the truth of physical laws idk but it sounds good. Spock brings it home.
Even with the wind whipping around him, Kirk is SO in love. His absolutely adoring expression... So soft...
“Very well, Sir, I’ll meld with you again. Not that I particularly want to. It will be a sacrifice. But I’ll manage. Even though you’re such a dynamic individual haha ha I’m fine I’m cool.”
I feel like Scotty is NOT into the mind meld. He looks terrified. Maybe he should have saved the bourbon for this occasion.
I know the mind meld is supposed to be a replacement for on screen hypnotism...but is this not hypnotism? Like even more than past uses? In this case, Spock is leaving them with suggestions that he wants to continue AFTER the meld, as opposed to, like, efficiently sharing information or giving immediate suggestions. And the scenes themselves are very creepy and...hypnotic.
Kirk’s patented move: WHOLE BODY ATTACK.
Well, we wrapped that up right quick.
Did they... never actually leave the bridge? Or even navigate past the buoy? This actually brings up a lot of questions as to when the aliens started the hallucinations, what their bodies looked like to the rest of the crew, and how they woke up--since there’s obviously been a bit of a time skip, as Bones is already examining Chekov.
Lol at Chekov, saved by horniness. “Nothing but the girl was real to him.”
“A vast alliance of fellow creatures who all believe in the same thing...”
Kirk’s vision of the utopian future is so powerful, he’s effectively gotten the welcome mat put back out.
A personal question? Kirk is intrigued.
Ah, but it’s just another excuse for Spock to be a hypocrite--how did humans survive? How did VULCANS survive? And for the show to remind us of its utopian vision of the future... we will move past violence, we will prove ourselves attractive to and worth of new alien friends.
Then McCoy walks out so Kirk and Spock can have their Moment. He undoubtedly knows what’s up.
So this ep was shown one day before the anniversary of the shootout at the OK Corral AND on Halloween week. It is very much a spooky season episode. So surreal and strange. Ghostly.
I know using sets rather than on location shoots, and not even building whole sets, was a budgetary issue but tbqh I think it worked in the ep’s favor. It added to the alien feeling of it and was an accidentally creative way of showing that these images were pulled from Kirk’s mind.
This felt like a very Classic S1-ish ep to me. I think it’s because Kirk was foregrounded as the Captain/hero and we get to see not just his intelligence and creativity and leadership but also his compassion and his moral core. He IS the values of the series, personified, and that was clear here.
But we also got to see lots of him and Spock, casually working as a pair, and the use of the rest of the landing party crew was very deft also. I loved that there was time to mock Chekov’s horniness, to talk about Spock and Chekov’s professional relationship, to joke around with Scotty, to show more of the Spock and Bones dynamic.
Again, great sci fi concept. I think this would have been another possible inspo for my Pirate AU if I’d seen it in time (although I think I picked a good mission-concept ultimately). I’m fascinated by the Melkotians: who are they? What do they really look like? Do they communicate any other way but telepathically? Are they corporeal? What is their planet like? And most importantly, what experience lead them to be so isolationist? They specifically refer to the aliens as “disease” coming into their home. And it’s when Kirk shows himself to be fundamentally nonviolent even in the face of his own death, they let the Enterprise through.
Basically, I always enjoy hints of alien societies that bring up more questions for me than answers. I love speculating about it.
The next two eps I’ve seen and remember well and I know they’re classics. I’m really looking forward to them!

fuck, marry, kill
aos!leonard mccoy x female!reader, who’s a nurse on the starship enterprise.
word count: 5885
rating: explicit (workplace sex, at the end, for fun.)
part one of more than a game, you and me.
A silly game from your academy days gets interrupted, leaving you to think over how you really feel about the great Dr. McCoy.
“Goddammit, bastard, son of a fucking bitch,” you hissed, shaking your hand after yanking it back from the control panel next to your shower. It had the gall to shock you, one that rippled down your arm and almost made your other hand drop the towel you clung to for decency. Somehow the same steady hands that could wield a pair of hypodermics and a tricorder without thinking about it managed to break every other piece of equipment on the Enterprise.
A year since you got transferred, a year since the last major headache, and you had managed to build up a routine. Waking up to beta shifts until the six-month mark when you transferred to alpha shifts that gave you more to do without the headaches of fighting artificial daylight. Crew physicals and routine exams for viruses carried onboard from earth until all the crew had been cleared. Lunches six hours in, dinner six hours after that, followed by a jog, some yoga, a shower, and then… repeat.
It was a good routine. One that made you friends with other nurses in blue and engineers in red and a few on the captain track who came in more often because of their proximity to the action. You could now say “hello” to Sulu and “good morning” to Chekov and other niceties to a couple other officers. And they’d smile back, and all in all nothing was disrupted. Your routine kept you going.
But now, that routine was stopped in its tracks.
With a little huff, you shook your head. Fortunately for you, your connections through routine hypos and the occasional healing after a scuffle gave you one particularly good friend. One who was very good at fixing up the Enterprise in any state she was in. And because of your clumsiness and tendency to get shocked, that friend was simply a comm unit away. Decency first, of course.
“Y/N to Scotty.”
“Aye, lass, Scotty here.”
A sigh of relief that he wasn’t on break, or worse, sleeping. That’d been a bear you wouldn’t want to disturb more than once. Your fingers tapped away, allowing his voice to fill the room rather than sound tinny coming from the communicator and your hands to hunt for a shirt.
“Yeah, we’ve got a situation. My shower isn’t working?”
“Is that right,” the chief engineer replied, and you could tell by his voice that under the amusement there was distraction. Your problem was not the only one on his plate, then. Or at the very least, not his main focus.
“Yeah, that’s right. Shocked me, as a matter of fact, when I tried to get it going.”
“Mmm.” Make that a lot of distraction.
“Scotty?”
“Yeah, lass?”
“Can you come fix it?”
“Fix what?”
With a soft sigh you pulled your shirt over your head, shaking out your hair before pulling it up into something passable for company.
“My shower, Scott. Y’know, again, the one that shocked me. That’s not turning on. That shower.”
“Shocked you? Well, this is the first I’m hearing about it,” he scoffed, indignant, and your eyes went wide with disbelief before you heard his chuckle.
“Oh, so I’m the entertainment for this evening, then,” you muttered with a scowl, scrounging around for the pants you just had on and the regulation zip-up you could walk around the halls in.
“Of course, Y/L/N,” he retorted. “I was wondering when the next time you’d call was. After all, it’s been, what, almost a week since our last incident with the replicator, hasn’t it been?”
“Two weeks, thank you,” you snapped, the pants snatched off the floor and shaken out with a vengeance. One foot began making its way inside the leg of the pants, the other hopping on the floor. “Monty, please, I just got off shift, I’m tired, and I’m sweaty, and there were three cases of Takarian bronchiolitis that we had to treat with airborne precautions. Never mind next week’s also Christine’s birthday, who I love with all of my heart but the party I got roped into planning for, of fucking – agh!”
“Y/N!”
Bouncing on one leg could only last for so long, of course. Your head thankfully did not contact anything with a hard surface. Your ass, however, got the brunt of the blow, specifically your tailbone.
“Y/N?”
When you groaned, you heard the relief, as well as the stifled laughter.
“Can you just please come fix my shower? I think there’s an analgesic hypo with my name on it back in the med bay.”
-
Of course, you weren’t one to completely bypass the rules. The Enterprise had enough of that in places other than the medical unit, and your chief medical officer, Dr. McCoy, was a stickler for right and wrong and lines that shouldn’t be crossed. So, your hypodermic needle was checked out by Christine, administered by her, and all logged and dated with a note about the situation. And, because your appointment didn’t technically end for another fifteen minutes, there was enough time for a little bit of gossip.
Your type of news always was the kind of shit that got the whole crew talking. The next adventure, who was sleeping with who, the drama that came out of confessions when the ship was falling apart. Anything to work through the monotony. But Christine’s favorite topic was almost always you, much to your chagrin.
“You know I don’t have a love life,” you said with a roll of your eyes, sitting up on the biobed and letting your feet dangle off of the edge. “That hasn’t changed in the three days since you asked me last.”
“I do know you’re at the very least no fun about it,” she responded with an eye roll, fingers tracing over your vitals the bed collected and reported. “There’s hundreds of people on this ship, and you’re telling me that none of them catch your eye? What about the chief engineer?”
Immediately your eyes widened, and you couldn’t help the laugh that left you. “Scotty? No. No, no, we’re just friends, aggressively friends. He keeps me around because I’m the only one who gives him stuff to do during the night shifts. Without me breaking lightbulbs it’d be too dull.”
Of course, her eyebrow crept up in suspicion, but when your gaze held steady, she dropped her eyes, waving a hand like the idea was preposterous anyway.
“All right. So, no Scotty. Any ensigns?”
“No.”
“Lieutenants?”
“No.”
“Cadets?”
“Oh, my god, Christine,” you gasped out with a laugh, jumping off of the biobed, smacking her on the arm.  “Stop it.” Your eyes glanced around the med bay, but just like every beta shift began, it was pretty damn quiet. Not a soul in sight besides the two of you. “There’s no one.”
“Well, you’re no fun,” she sighed, pushing off of the wall to meet you nose to nose. “But there’s gotta be someone who at least catches your eye, right?”
“Chris…”
“Someone on this ship you’d be willing to fuck – “
“No, we’re not – “
“- marry, maybe – “
“Christine, I swear to god – “
“- or kill?”
Again, your eyes darted around, but at that point the game had been called. A throwback to your time in the academy, when your classmates would find the local bars and a booth to heckle each other in. When passersby would be unknowingly subjected to a game based on nothing but good fun, and usually a whole lot of booze.
Simple premise. Three names called out. Each gets a label, and the rounds continue until the players decide they’ve had enough. Called anywhere, at any time, and Christine had thrown the gauntlet.
“You’re on duty,” you pointed out, but you leaned back on the biobed, crossing your arms over your chest.
“And if there’s a patient I’ll tend to them. But you’ve got nowhere to be, and if I have a say we’re finding someone on this ship for you,” she pointed out, before swiping your scans away from the vicinity and joining you on the bed. “Three rounds. I bet you I can do it in three rounds.”
With an eye roll you proceeded to glare at her, but her grin did not budge once, and with a sigh you just nodded.
“Perfect. Why don’t we start with a throwback? Old classmates? Harrison, Twyla, and Betty.”
Your smile crept up on your face, and without a second thought you rattled it off. “Fuck Twyla, marry Harrison, kill Betty. Obviously.” Considering that two of the three weren’t even on the ship, you knew that it was more a warmup than anything. Lots of pretty people at the Starfleet Academy.
“All right. And then… oh, what about the bridge crew?”
“Christine,” you groaned, hand smacking over your face. “We’re in public.”
“There’s no one here, and you can’t chicken out of the second round! Look, we’ll do… Lieutenant Sulu, Lieutenant Uhura, and Ensign Chekov.”
Your jaw clenched. Forget about saying hi to Sulu ever again.
“I would… I would…”
“C’mon. You can say it, Y/N.”
“Fine, fine!” But you couldn’t help your laughter as you shoved Christine’s arm again. “I would… I would fuck Uhura, marry Sulu, and – “
“And kill Chekov? He’s got a baby face! You’re gonna kill him where he stands!”
“Christine, this is not real life,” you reminded her with a hiss, shaking your head before beginning to walk towards the door. “I’m leaving before I end up having to resign.”
“Oh, no! We’ve got one more go.”
“I’m walking. My tailbone doesn’t even hurt anymore. The miracle of modern medicine.”
“Y/N!”
“What?”
“Captain Kirk.”
“No, Christine.”
“Commander Spock.”
“Stop!”
“And Dr. Mccoy!”
“What about me?”
Your heart stopped.
“Nurse Y/L/N, is that right?” Dr. McCoy, the man himself, stated, raising a brow as he moved into the med bay, boxes stacked up in his hand. Christine did the smart thing, moving forward to help the doctor carry them inside, but your feet were cemented to the floor, mouth a little agape, color flooding your cheeks.
“Y-Yes! Hello, sir, I was just – uh, I was just –“ you stammered, turning to follow them both with your eyes as their load was dropped on one of the biobeds. “Well. I was just leaving, really.”
“She had an appointment,” Christine offered, her best and most polite smile on for your shared boss, who seemed too tired to do more than nod. “And we were just discussing… shifts?”
“Shifts.” Again, Dr. McCoy’s brow raised, and with skilled fingers he reached to slide them along the seam, a hiss sounding out as they opened up, bearing unloaded hypodermics, some bandaging supplies.
“Shifts.” Your voice was weak as you confirmed it, but while his eyes were down Christine gave you a subtle nod, winking even as you scowled at her. “You see, I was just – I was just wondering if I could take the beta shift next week, and… well. That’s a change I need you to sign off on. Dr. M’Benga and dr. Olson didn’t have a preference when I asked them.”
“Uh-huh,” was the gruff response, and as his fingers reached up to scratch at his chin, something like amusement seemed to play in his eyes. Although, thinking about it, you reasoned it was probably just the exhaustion and the lights in the med bay you saw instead. “So, you scheduled an appointment with Christine and my medbay, takin’ up one of the biobeds here, to talk about shift changes?”
“No. No, no, it wasn’t just about that,” you got out, more heat rising to your cheeks, and thankfully your feet were moving backwards, towards the door, as their hands slid into gloves and prepped the new cargo for treatment.
“She… took a spill in her quarters. Needed an analgesic. I did a scan to make sure it wasn’t anything more than a bruised tailbone and then gave her a dose of lidocaine for the area and acetaminophen for the pain.” Of course, Christine could chime in, sounding composed, while you had just managed to regain motor functioning.
“I see,” McCoy responded, and there was a brief moment where you were sure he was gonna call your bluff. You didn’t even remember right away that there was a hypo-stick in the first place, and the lidocaine definitely did not happen, right? But then, something, almost like a smirk washed over his features. They relaxed, and those eyes lit up again, deep and dark and warm. It was like taking a shot of whiskey, the sour leaving behind something that made your breath catch.
“You know you could just say you fell on your ass, Nurse Y/L/N.”
The stories about Dr. McCoy in a nutshell. No southern charm, just a sweet Georgian gut punch. Humor hiding in the comment, of course, but at that point your embarrassment made it taste pretty damn bitter.
Thankfully, though, the moment was gone. The smirk vanished, the exhaustion seemed to settle over him like a blanket, and his eyes glanced toward you once again before shrugging. “beta shift works for me. Just don’t let it screw with your head too much and find someone who’s willing to trade.”
“That’s… yes. Well - good night, sir,” you got out, biting your lower lip, bowing your head before shooting another glare at Christine. “Good night, Nurse Chapel, and I’ll see you both… when I see you.”
“Good night, Y/N,” Christine called out, and the good doctor managed a hum of acknowledgement, his attention already pulled away from your retreating form. And if there was a second glance at you, it was nothing more than confirmation that the night was back to peace and quiet.
-
“I am never going to recover from this.”
“Mmm,” Scotty ground out, his arm elbow deep into the guts of the Enterprise.
“I mean it, Monty!” You cried out, back flat on your bed, arm thrown across your face but leaving your mouth wide open to complain. “Jesus Christ and now I’ve gotten myself roped into beta shifts, ready to be bored out of my skull for a whole damn week. He thinks I’m an idiot. An idiot and insane!”
“D’you think?” Was the reply, but the lack of attention didn’t bother you one bit. You were barely paying attention.
No, your head was running wild, with the fear that the greatest job you had, the job you were best at, was now at risk because of some dumb game you played with Christine. What if Dr. McCoy had heard all of it? What if he had just walked in because he had heard enough, and then you’d get called into his office, not a smirk in sight, and request your resignation? Could he do that? Off of a conversation?
“Y/N!” Scotty called out, and that’s what finally broke your spiral downward, your body shooting up to a sitting position, looking up to see Scotty staring out of the bathroom at you. Your water was running, you could hear it, and Scott was grinning from ear to ear, some kind of tool tucked behind his ear.
“All fixed,” he crowed with joy, brushing his hands off on his uniform. When he leaned on the doorway, his eyes were gazing around the rest of the place, as if it was just waiting to break on him, too. “computer, shut down the shower. Now, what were you saying, lassie? Somethin’ about our chief medical officer, yes?”
And as Scott smiled at you, no recognition of your crisis in him, you just smiled back, standing up to give him a hug. Even without saying anything, he had the best ideas.
“Nothing, Monty. Thanks for the fix.”
He was hustled out a few moments later, after a playful argument taking bets on what piece of machinery in this poor room would fall apart next (he was a fan of the faulty replicator, but you had a gut feeling it’d be the temperature control). But soon he was out of the room, and you knew that ignoring the whole thing would be the best option.
Except with Christine, ignorance was never an option for bliss. When your padd beeped, and then your communicator, you were forced to answer the message, looking to see a little smiley face emoticon with a message that left your heart falling to the floor.
“Your answer? :)”
Your answer? For the game? After all of that and Christine had the gall? But you could see her smile, even from this far, a smile that made you smirk.
But they were the rules, and so the question was left in your head. What was your answer? What were the options?
You thought about it as you started to get ready for bed, t-shirt set on the counter in the bathroom, hot shower started. Your hair was put up before you stripped, your face splashed with water and a towel as steam began to fill the room.
“Captain Kirk.” No personal experience with him, but you, like everyone on the ship, had seen him around. Had heard the legends. There wasn’t a soul who didn’t seem stricken by the love bug when it came to him, blond hair perfect, smile bright, blue eyes startlingly, well, blue. Friendly, quick, brave. He was the perfect man. But not everyone knew Christine. Christine, who’d had the lovely interaction with Cadet Kirk, at the time, who ended up kicking him out of your shared dorm room after a bad argument gone bad. The air was cleared enough that he managed to get polite smiles from her, but after that captain kirk never had the appeal. He was a playboy. His nature, his right, you supposed. But not for you.
“Commander Spock.” Tall, handsome. But very Vulcan, and very taken. Now, you knew he had to have some kind of sweet side, and there was something, you guessed, about the confidence that his reliance on logic seemed to convey. After all, you’d heard him lecture a few times, and if you were honest that would’ve been when you were most attracted to him – using his knowledge and logic and proud spirit to lead others on the path toward serving the federation. But there was only so far that logic and a lack of emotion could go, and even though you’d heard of outbursts occurring where his emotion made their mark? No. Arguments aplenty.
And who did that leave?
“Dr. McCoy.”
At that point, you still hadn’t entered the shower, and the computer was telling you that the water was about to automatically turn off to preserve the function of the ship’s supply, but your head was no longer in your bedtime ritual, instead thinking about the mysterious Dr. Mccoy, the infamous Dr. McCoy.
The Dr. McCoy that made nurses cry every so often from his outbursts – never violent but fierce, always due to the protectiveness he had for his patients. The Dr. McCoy who was a doctor before he even became a cadet, with enough knowledge to fill a few books. The Dr. McCoy who had smirked at you with those dark and deep eyes, brown and full with some kind of life as he... Well, teased, southern accent lilting just a bit, maybe? That Dr. McCoy? The Dr. McCoy who saved lives and healed and always, always, always fought for more healthcare, for more hypos, for more protections for the nurses who somehow, even in the 24th century, managed to get pushed to the wayside?
When you stepped in the shower, it took a second for your fingers to bang at the control panel, your legs held together, and with a quick setting manipulation the steam quickly cleared, the water’s temperature dropping to ice cold. You were in, and you were out, but by the time you had dressed and brushed your teeth color had crept on your cheeks again.
All you could see were those eyes.
“Fuck.”
-
“Ah, Nurse Y/L/N,” the doctor said, eyes barely looking up from the singed hands of the red-shirt in front of him. “I need dermatological regen started here and a full body scan initiated on the biobed two over.”
Like nothing had even happened. Like your nightmare interaction two weeks ago hadn’t resulted in you unintentionally taking night shifts, resulting in a fucked up circadian rhythm and bags under your eyes, not to mention hours bored out of your skull.
Christine wasn’t here, and for once you were grateful. The last thing you needed was her eyes on you as you maneuvered around the doctor for a new shift while exhaustion lingered in the back of your mind. But it also meant that there was no one to offer a united front. Just you.
“Nurse Y/L/N?”
And you just spent the past minute mulling all of that in your mind. Making yourself look like a dumbass in front of the doc and his patient. The patient hadn’t noticed, staring at his own hands in horror, but Dr. McCoy seemed like he was regretting letting you back on to handle days.
Shit.
“You got it, doc,” you managed with a kind smile at the engineer, whose face you could now see as you walked past him toward the wall. Your hands expertly manipulated to storage system, and with the tricorder kept at your waist you gathered the necessities.
The great thing – you were damn good at what you did. Especially when you could focus on it. Your face was bright, uniform neat (until it wasn’t due to fluids of some kind), and your hands were steady. And no complicated patients came in that day, especially since no away missions were sent out and nothing malfunctioned horribly deep within the ship’s bowels.
And yet, no matter what you did, no matter how competent you showed you were, no matter how many laughs or smiles or even nods from the most stubborn of usual patients? Eyes were on you. Dark, deep eyes. The whole day, no matter where you went, a furrowed brow and focused tailed you, watching your interactions.
All in all, a good day. A great day, even, as you injected your last hypo and the padd reported a normal set of vitals, no reaction to the medication after fifteen minutes.
The shift was over, now. It was a good shift, one that required no personal defense. You gave report to the next nurse, said goodbye to the others on-duty. Your jacket put on, your hair pulled down and back up after the frizz of the day had ruined it. Nothing really to note.
So why did the doctor not let you out of his sight?
The rest of the week, the same routine. The flow you had gotten into on alpha shifts returned, and your week of off nights was left behind in favor of much better mornings. Back on track, the same old, same old. And yet with every shift there was a new weight, those eyes on you. It felt like if he wasn’t tending to a patient, and he wasn’t in his office in the back of the bay, he was watching you. Critical of every injection and admission. You were starting to go a little crazy with it, your mind going a million miles an hour, second guessing the simplest stuff just so you wouldn’t fuck up in front of the CMO.
But after a while, the fear of failure turned into anger.
What right did the doctor have to analyze like that? You were a great nurse! You treated your patients and coworkers fairly, with respect and compassion. What was there to complain about? You knew your shit, and here was McCoy, looking like the Enterprise regretted your assignment there in the first place. By the end of the week, that anger had built up, and once the weekend rolled around, and your two off days in a row loomed, you decided you were done.
“Is there something on my uniform, Dr. McCoy?” You asked, terse as you organized the vaccine cart, the new year meaning new yearly injections to follow up on.
His fingers had been steadily scrolling through files of crew members, but their nimble work paused at your question. His eyes had taken a break from tearing you apart, but now they were focused on you once again.
“Excuse me, Nurse Y/L/N?” He asked, his face looking almost pinched.
“I was just wondering if there was something on my uniform. Or in my teeth, perhaps. Something in my hair, maybe, too.” Your hands kept chugging along, automatically rearranging the colored liquids, but there was a tightness you couldn’t shake, a tension.
“Something in your hair?” The doctor repeated, and at his tone, somewhat amused, you finally turned to face him, your brow raised in a mimic of his.
“Well, there’s gotta be something, considering that you haven’t gone five minutes without staring at me like I’m your least favorite sight in the world. So, what is it? Uniform out of regs? Did I administer a medication wrong? Did a patient complain?”
At that point, the amusement had turned to indignation, maybe even anger. His jaw was clenched, and the padd in his hands had been abandoned on the desk in favor of crossed arms over his chest.
“I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, nurse,” he ground out, eyes flicking around the med bay. But there was no one to look at. No one to distract or overhear.
You couldn’t help your laugh. “Oh, I think you do,” you snapped, and almost mocking him, your arms crossed as well, a hip cocked, your eyes like daggers. “Ever since I came back on alpha shift, you’ve been doing all you can to catch me in a fuck-up. Well, it’s not happening! I’m damn good at what I do, and no amount of posturing, even from the CMO, would ever change that!”
His scoff was hard, arms uncrossing so a hand could pull through his hair in disbelief. “darlin’,” he said, slowly, as if you were dense, “There’s no posturing going on. Your abilities aren’t being doubted. Hell, I don’t even know your first name. Whatever story you’ve got going on in your head? It’s a story!”
His frustration showed through his accent, a southern drawl that got thicker as his sentences rambled on. But that couldn’t distract you from calling him out on his bullshit, no matter his position.
“I’m not senile,” you huffed, eyes rolling hard, and your steps closer were unconscious, crowding him against the desk he was leaning on now. “And I’m definitely not blind. So, tell me what your problem is with me, so I can go back to focusing on my job, and you can go back to focusing on yours!”
“There’s no damn problem!” His voice was almost a yell now, but you had no fear, and you sure as hell weren’t backing down. “It’s nothing. Hell, there isn’t anything to be nothing.”
And then it clicked, it clicked, as you stared into brown eyes that wavered for a second, that scanned you top to bottom in a split second. A break, a tell, whatever it was, the pieces were put together, and you stood tall, not letting his height on you intimidate.
“You overheard me and Christine, didn’t you?” It was low. “Is that what it is?”
“Overheard.” The clench in his jaw hadn’t loosened, but you watched that brow tick upwards again, his arms uncrossing so his hands could rest on the desk.
“When you walked in on us, last week,” you clarified. “You overheard our game.”
The anger was gone now. Now that everything had slotted into place, you weren’t angry. A little bit embarrassed maybe, but not angry. Frustration felt like it was leaking out of you, but the tension wasn’t gone. The standoff wasn’t broken. And after all of what, you had just yelled at your superior officer.
“Dr. McCoy,” you started, uncrossing your arms, and holding them up to offer a truce. “I apologize. For yelling. That… well, it shouldn’t have been my first move. But. I can explain, if you want me to.”
There was no verbal reply, but his exasperation came through with a huff, and he simply lifted a hand, gesturing for you to go on.
“It’s just a game we’ve played since the academy. It was inappropriate to play while Christine was on shift. I apologize for that as well,” you told him pulling back to glance once more at the sliding doors, which mercifully stayed closed. “It won’t happen again, I promise.”
“Just a game,” he repeated, and at first you didn’t catch the shift in his tone. Didn’t connect it with the glance toward the doors, or the way he stood from the desk, so that you were almost close enough to brush against him. “Just a game… using the names of your captain, commander, and chief medical officer?”
“Yes,” you said, shaking your head. “I’m sorry for that, as well, that definitely won’t be happening again.”
“A game talkin’ about who you’d rather have in your bed.”
Your eyes shot back to him, color flooding your cheeks.
“I’m… I’m sorry?”
“Well, that’s the game, isn’t it?” He said with a shrug, and as he leaned forward you could feel your breath catch in your throat, looking up into a face you imagined in your own quarters in the dead of night, as you let steaming water hit your skin. His jaw wasn’t clenched anymore, and his voice was a low rumble.
It wasn’t a threat. But it gave you goosebumps all the same, that the bass of his words, and you managed to nod, swallowing even as you kept your chin lifted.
“That’s the game. Is there a problem?”
And God, there was that smirk. Warm like whisky, it made your hands clench, your legs shift as that warmth rushed through you.
“No problem at all,” he hummed, and as he leaned close those lips brushed past your cheek. You could smell his cologne now, spice flooding your nose, the antiseptic of the day fading away. The chill in the air that always seemed to linger was gone, nothing but heat on your mind. Right in your ear you heard him, after a low chuckle that made you want to scream, beg him to get on with it. “I guess I’ve just been wondering what you would’ve answered, had I not… interrupted.”
Lunchtimes were surely coming to an end. Any second a patient could come in, could see the both of you crowded against the desk and know exactly why the whole place felt like an oven. But something possessed you, then, to bring one of your hands to his shoulder, the other to his hip, and lean just as close, almost pushing up on your toes to whisper right back.
“Give you one guess.”
Matches. That’s what that kiss felt like, a box of matches all lighting at once – the spark and the flash and explosion of heat as Dr. McCoy pulled back just enough to press his lips against yours. Nothing gentle, nothing kind, just a ferocity that made you moan against his mouth. His hands, broad and hot, began to roam on your back, settling just enough to pull you ever closer, so that your bodies were flush against each other. Your hand ended up twisted in his hair, the other fisted in his shirt. And just like matches, it was the start of a fire, one that had you both stumbling towards his office, the door sliding behind you with a quiet hiss.
“You were teasing me,” he ground out, directing you between kisses until the back of your thighs were against his desk. His hands gripped you then, around the waist, lifting you so you could sit. “And you didn’t even know it. Your voice over and over in my head, thinking about how it’d sound with my name.”
“So, you stare at my ass instead of asking me, hmm? What a southern gentleman,” you laughed, and for that you got teeth against your neck, a hand shoving your skirt up. The tips of his fingers seemed to skate over your skin, tickling your inner thigh. But those slow circles never quite got where you wanted, just left burning trails in their wake. “Talk about teasing.”
“At’s what you get for having a smart mouth,” he chuckled, face still against your neck. But soon he was back to kissing you, making your head spin.
“That I know how to use,” you shot back, once again between presses of lips and gasps of air. “I’m – I’m not just a pretty face.”
“Never said you were,” he purred, and this time both hands lifted your skirt high, reaching for the panties that did a poor job of hiding anything. “But why don’t you let me use my mouth first?”
“What an offer. One you certainly wouldn’t refuse, especially since he looked hungry for it, for you.
There was a brief moment’s hesitation, his finger curled around the elastic and so close to ripping them off. But while his body was begging for it, his pants more than a little tight, his eyes met yours.
“Is that a yes?” He asked, his tongue running along his lips as he got to his knees.
Your gaze didn’t waver, a grin coming over you. “That’s a fucking yes, sir.”
His grin matched yours, sharp and wily as he rid you of your underwear, hands on your knees so he could pull them apart. You were bare to the cool air, and your teeth caught your lower lip as he leaned forward with a hot gasp on your inner thigh.
“Fucking gorgeous.”
The first thing you felt was the swipe of his tongue, a furious push against where you were wettest. A taste, almost, before he licked a line through your folds until his mouth enveloped your clit. You were swollen, desperate for it, and your gasp was thick as fingers once again tangled in his hair. If you said anything, it was a “please,” a “yes,” a “god, right there” as he worked.
He took you apart with his mouth, no hesitation as his tongue worked you over, swirling around your clit as a finger began to tease your entrance. It was with a gasp you came, his hand spreading you open with two fingers inside of you, and when you were able to see straight you saw that grin again, his chin wet, his lips red.
“Holy shit, Doc,” you huffed, your hand falling from his hair to his chin, thumb swiping across the mess and bringing it up to your mouth so you could get a taste of yourself. He did you one better, leaning forward to kiss you again, and the taste of him and you made you smile.
“Leonard.”
“Leonard,” you repeated, and when you pulled back his smile was softer. Almost… vulnerable. “Suits you.”
“Well, I hope so,” he laughed. “It is my name.”
“And it’s my turn,” you pointed out, reaching for his waistband. “I think you should move to the chair.”

Word Count: 1600
Warning: None
A/N: Hi everyone, this is the secon part of Dark Past! Here is the Part 1 if you missed it. Part three will be the last so stay tuned! Hope you will like it and i also hope to bring you some joy in these troubled times, please stay safe 💖 As always, feedback is always appreciated. Love you all xoxo
She should be dead… How can she still be alive?
Kirk couldn’t think at anything else since he saw you taking that shot from Khan. The blood, the gash on you shoulder and then nothing, your skin closed and healed in front of him. Anyone else would have died in his track but you didn’t, and even he wouldn’t admit it, he was glad of it.
Since you took your first step into the bridge, he couldn’t take his eyes of you. There was something in your appearance, in your voice, in your gestures, the way your mouth moved while you spoke… you were intriguing, and without a doubt, really appealing.
Then he saw you fighting and, if possible, his curiosity towards you and who you really were, increased even more. With surprise drawn on his face and the adrenaline from the fight still pumping in his veins, he watched as you skillfully faced your opponent without flinching or giving any sign of fatigue. A war machine, made to fight, but elegant and solemn.
Then you were hit. His heart stopped for a second and his eyes widened in horror. Instead, you felt pure anger as you slowly turned again towards Khan and you shipmates, the wound was healing fast. Oh, you had so much to explain now.
Perfect excuse to talk to her Jim thought.
The Medbay was exactly as you remembered. The tickling of instruments and the beeping of monitors, that weird plastic smell, the beds and their colourless sheets.
You were sitting up straight on a biobed, your expression emotionless, your eyes focused on an unknown direction. After you were beamed back to the ship the Captain gently offered to accompany you to the Medbay and you knew you couldn’t avoid it. Not that you disliked being near the Captain, instead you were quite pleased. You walked down the corridors alongside Kirk and you couldn’t help but notice how he would occasionally linger his glare on you. Maybe because I took a shot in my shoulder and there is no sign of it anymore, besides the huge hole in the fabric. He is probably asking himself who the hell I am…he probably has so many questions… and I don’t know if I can answer them…
By accepting this mission you knew that this could happen, but you decided to join the Enterprise nonetheless. Khan was a powerful opponent, smart, logical, devious, he could have done anything to get what he wanted: shooting at you and exposing you for example. There were secrets no one should have ever known about you, but fighting against Khan had its drawbacks, and this was one of them.
So now you stood there ready to see Doctor McCoy and his confused look when he will receive your test results.
Bones and Kirk were talking right outside Medbay when Spock approached them.
“Captain” Spock appeared from behind them.
“Spock, how is the ship?”
“Warp speed is still unusable, Mr Chekov is working on it, but for now, we are stranded here sir.”
The Captain sighed loudly “Alright. What about Y/n, Bones?”
“I don’t know Jim, this is…” the Doctor kept looking at the pad in front of him. Your test results.
“What? Did you find something?”
“I’ve never seen something like this”
Kirk folded his arms and shook his head lightly “Neither did I”
“So she was hit by John Harrison, or Khan, on her shoulder and in just few seconds the wound healed. By itself.” Bones looked at him with a confused expression.
“That’s what we so” Jim shared a look with Spock.
“Well, that explains a lot”
Kirk’s eyebrows furrowed in perplexity “What do you mean?”
“All the blood test results are out of range, it seems like her cells regenerate and transform constantly” Bones kept looking at the pad in his hands.
“Interesting” Spock said.
“What Spock?”
“Well Captain, Khan and Y/n seem to know each other, and they are obviously opponents. So why shoot her in the shoulder? We already had a demonstration of Khan’s skills with weapons of any sort, it is hardly believable that from his position and his distance from Y/n, he would have miss a lethal spot”
Bones and Kirk listened carefully. Spock was right.
“I need to talk to her” Jim said before entering Medbay “Spock go to the bridge, inform me if anything changes”
“Yes Captain”
You heard approaching footsteps and you immediately knew it was the Captain and the Doctor. You watched them enter in silence, Kirk stood next to a medical counter and McCoy was right in front of you, holding his pad.
“You probably have some questions” you said with a small smile.
“Seeing someone healing a shot like that is no daily routine, sweetheart” said Bones.
“I understand” you looked to your right and saw the Captain glaring at you.
The Doctor took from a nearby table an empty hypo and placed the pad down.
“I’ll run some more blood tests, I have to take a sample”
You grabbed your suit’s sleeve and pulled it up. Once the hypo was full with blood Kirk moved towards you.
“Bones can you give me a minute?”
He looked at his friend and than at you “Of course” he said while exiting, living you two in silence.
“May I?” he said pointing at empty spot near you.
“Please” why is my heart beating so fast? you thought.
His handsome blue eyes peered in yours, it was almost impossible to look away.
“Normally I know almost everything about my shipmates, but I think there’s something you didn’t tell me about yourself”
Contrarily to what you’d expected, he was calm and gentle, something rather new for you. You couldn’t help but stiffen a little after his encouragement to speak.
“You see captain-”
“Jim” he said smiling “call me Jim”
Smiling back, you continued “You see… Jim, there are things I can’t say. Even to my Captain”
“If they are inherent with the mission I should know everything”
Jim could sense your uneasiness about the matter, but he needed to know what was going on.
You looked away from him, images of your past came through your mind, ghosts that haunted your nights for years, and now, they came back to haunt you again.
“How do you know him?” Kirk was almost scared to know the answer, excepting a connection between you two.
Your head slowly turned towards him, your eyes severe. “If you are asking if we work together in any way, you are wrong. Instead, it’s quite the opposite”
With a small sigh of relief the captain nodded.
“As you and all your crew, I am here to end him and complete my mission”
Kirk saw your single-minded determination, the fire in your eyes that captured him since the first time he saw you.
“I must know who is he or else I won’t be able to complete this mission.”
After a brief moment of silence you spoke again.
“John Harrison is just a mere smokescreen, a fiction, used to conceal his true identity. His name is Khan and he was a black shirt like me” You couldn’t finish what you were saying because you were cut off by the First Officer’s voice.
“Captain, Khan has been confined and the Doctor is ready to take a sample from the prisoner”
“Alright” Jim looked at you and nodded “We will continue later”
Khan looked like a lion in a cage, calm but with piercing eyes ready to attack once the cell was open, and when he saw you he couldn’t help the rage he felt rising in him. He didn’t consider your presence in this mission and he knew you were a possible thorn in his side. You or not you he would get what we wanted, with his cleverness or with the force.
Spock, Jim and you approached the cell and watched as doctor McCoy opened a small gap in the glass.
“Put your arm through the hole. I’m gonna take a blood sample” he said.
Khan drew near the glass and did as Bones ordered.
“I see your shoulder is doing fine” his vicious voice resonated in your ears.
“Not thanks to you” he laughed a little and then turned his attention on Kirk.
“Why aren’t we moving, Captain? An unexpected malfunction, perhaps in your warp core conveniently stranding you in the edge of Klingon space?”
The Doctor looked up from Khan’s arm in utter surprise “How the hell do you know that?”
“Bones.”
“I think you’d find my insight valuable, Captain. Ignore me and you will get everyone on this ship killed.”
“Bones let me know if you find something” Kirk said to his friend as he walked away.
“Captain, I would not recommend engaging the prisoner further” Spock tried to calm the Captain but you could see he was fuming.
“Why did you surrender?” you suddenly asked as Kirk turned his head towards you.
“Y/n you should know very well” he responded.
Your jaw clenched.
“I’m here to convince you Mr Kirk of the truth”
“Truth? You know what is the truth? You are a criminal. I watched you murder innocent people and shoot at one of my crew member”
Involuntarily, your head turned to him, we was boiling in rage.
“23-17-46-11, if you want to know why I did what I did go and take a look or perhaps ask to your new crew member, she probably has the answers you are seeking Captain”
Kirk darted his eyes in your direction and saw your features twist in anger and slight panic but you didn’t hesitate and addressed him.
“You still did not respond, why did you surrender? What was the reason?”
“I can give you 72, all aboard your ship. I suggest you open one up”

Beloved - Pavel Chekov X Reader
A/N: Hello, lovelies! This can be read as either TOS or AOS really, though it is originally meant for TOS because he’s just the most feral, chaotic guy :’) This is a request for the ever awesome @okamiredfoxx whos just the kindest! I do apologise again it’s so late! I hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
To say the least, your job was never boring. Medical was definitely where all the fun was.
The crew aboard the Enterprise seemed to ever fully be out of danger. Even the most menial of tasks ended in some form of injury. Your captain, Jim Kirk, was by far the most frequent visitor, as well as a handful of others you got to know on a fairly good level. One of them was the youngest crewman, Ensign Pavel Chekov.
Chekov was in sick bay more times than you'd had hot dinners, and his record was challenging even that of the captains. Bones always asked you to tend to the less serious injuries if he was busy with paperwork or babysitting Jim, not that you minded; it kept you busy, and social. Chekov seemed to be a weekly visitor at a minimum, always having sprained his wrist or bruised a rib. You'd wondered how he managed it, though you never really asked.
Flirting back and forth as you tended to the injury of the week always ensued, and Bones would grumble away, busying himself in another part of sick bay. Both you and Chekov found it highly amusing. He'd flirt non stop, and you'd be a giggling, blushing mess by the end of it all, a sight he never did get bored of seeing.
One day, he'd come in with a back ache from an away mission, and you'd been in sick bay to help him, as per usual. Greeted with your smile, he'd forgotten the pain momentarily until he tried to sit down, letting the loudest yell out.
"Pavel!" you shouted, wondering if he'd managed to hurt himself any further, genuine concern lacing your voice. Your stress was somewhat relieved when he flashed you his charming, cheeky smile.
"I am fine, all the more so for seeing you, of course." You'd smiled back, eyes facing the floor as you went to grab the hypospray. All through it, Chekov had failed to take his eyes off of you, sending you a sweet smile every time you met his eye. Once you'd finished, you looked at him once more; he still had that daft grin.
"You're all done, you're free to go."
"Вы красивая.." muttered Chekov, absentmindedly. He hadn't realised he said that out loud until your voice brought him out of his thoughts.
"What did you just say? I'm afraid I don't speak Russian" you'd giggled, him too once he'd realised what he had done. Seeing there was no reason to hide that he said anything, he told you with a nervous grin this time, not filled with its usual confidence.
"I said I you're beautiful." His gaze not faltering, your cheeks flared a bright red, fiddling with your hands instead of looking at him. Feeling Chekov's hands cover your own, you were forced to look up at him, and from there, it was history for you two.
Anybody within a country mile of the two of you could see there was a spark between you both, so it was no surprise when it came out you were a couple. Not even Spock was shocked. Chekov was the best boyfriend you could have asked for, he never stepped a foot out of line and always put you first. Even before his own life.
There was an away mission you'd been sent on with Jim, Spock, Chekov and a couple of red shirts you hadn't met yet. The captain would usually take Bones as the medical officer, but he was swamped with paperwork and feeling a little ill himself, so Jim decided you were going instead. You were excited, seeing a new planet and the nature, wildlife and culture was what you'd always wanted to do, the reason you had joined Starfleet. That, and to help people, of course.
Things went bad, Jim started a fight, at least two of the red shirts were missing, and chaos had broken out. For your first away mission, things hadn't gone great. You'd be glad to be back on the ship. The remaining members of your away team were currently running from the now hostile group of aliens you were trying to make peace with. Suddenly, Scotty had managed to get a lock on you all and you were beamed up safely to the Enterprise. Once you were in the transporter room, you'd looked immediately for Chekov, who was clutching his arm before he collapsed.
Panic wasn't in your nature as a trained nurse and physician, however your brain saw the man you loved in pain on the ground and it began to seep through. You rushed to him before Jim had picked him up and carried him to the sick bay. Bones began work on him almost immediately, a comforting arm around your shoulder from the Captain as Bones worked his magic. The problem far too technical for you to perform as of yet, and you had agreed it was best left to trained hands. It turned out Chekov had been hit by one of their weapons, and it had injected a toxin into his blood stream.
"Any longer and the kid would have been dead. You two did well gettin' him here in time, he'll be just fine" Bones stated, packing up his equipment and giving you a curt nod. You thanked him with one back, still in shock that he had almost died. You felt Jim squeeze your shoulder and you looked up at him.
"Stay here with him, Y/N, we'll manage on the bridge just fine now." You gave him a grateful smile and he left. Making your way over to the now asleep Chekov, you took his hand and held it gently.
"You almost died on me, Pavel.." you trailed off, to nobody but yourself.
"But I didn't." Your head shot up and looked at him, and he lay there with the same grin you'd fallen in love with. You couldn't help but smile back, his smile was infectious.
"Deaths door and you're still being cheeky?" you tried to be serious, but couldn't help bursting into laughter all the same, Chekov joining in not long after. You cupped his face in your hands as he sat up to look at you properly.
"I'm sorry," he started, sensing how genuinely worried you were. "If it means anything, I didn't mean to, he just got a lucky shot."
"You're the only man I know who almost met his maker and has still got time to crack a joke.." you leaned down to kiss him. Pulling away all too soon, he met your eyes and they sparkled with their usual glimmer of mischief and love.
"A cuddle would really help ease my pain, Y/N, it's science, trust me" he winked, sitting up and dangling his legs off the edge of the bed. You stood between them and wrapped your arms round his neck, burying your face into his neck. It stayed that way for a while before you had spoken up.
"Please don't ever leave me, любимая моя." It was his turn to be a blushing mess, pulling back as he looked at you, astonished. You'd called him your beloved in perfect Russian and caught him off guard.
"You do speak Russian! That was perfect, Y/N, you amaze me. Where did you lean this?" he questioned, eyes full of love for only you.
"Uhura may have had a hand in it."
Needless to say, the night was spent full of cuddles, kisses and endless amounts of affection between you both, enough to make the whole ship sick. You wouldn't have your feral little Russian any other way.

Chapter Five: Check Your Misery At The Door...
Hey everyone! Chapter five is finally here and this one has a bit more angst in it. I wanted to try and delve a bit deeper into how Bones/Reaper feels and how he deals with the crew. Please tell me what you think! And once again thank you @dw-writes for being an amazing friend and beta! I would be lost and fumbling without you my dear! Cause I royally suck at editing and keeping my tenses straight.
-H❤🖖
The hard metal door was like puddy in Reaper’s hands as he yanked it off its frame. His adrenaline was still pumping from his fight with the Hell Knights and his need to protect his friends at the forefront of his mind gave him a dangerous boost. Panting, he pushed into the room, his eyes immediately adjusting to the darkness.
Looking around, he spotted Beckworth pulling ensign Bitar to her feet. She was in hysterics. John gave them a quick once over before moving further into the room looking for Chekov, Kirk, and Lawrence. The sound of grunting made him turn. Pavel was in the corner, trying to lift a heavy shelving unit. John was by his side in seconds.
“The Keptin..” the young navigator panted as he tried to lift the shelves again.
“Jim!” Reaper called out as he gently pushed Chekov to the side. He only relaxed as a muffled, pissed-off, “I’m fine, Bones, Get to Lawrence!” reached his ears. With one heave, the shelf was lifted and pushed back up-right again. Jim Kirk groaned and got to his feet with a wince. John moved to check on him but finally, the smell of charred, burned, dead flesh reached his nose. Something in his stomach dropped. Kirk’s “help Lawrence” was clear now. But he already knew there was no helping the security ensign.
Looking at Jim, John saw the angry pained expression on the captain’s face. Jim hated losing crewmen. Glaring up at a camera, Reaper picked his way through the melted obliterated mess of the supply room. Pushing aside small charred bodies, John quickly figured out what had happened.
Somehow, Lawrence was cornered by Veera’s newest creations, and he knew he wasn’t going to make it out. He set his phaser to overload, taking out as many as he could, knowing that the shelves would block the others from the brunt of the blast. Kneeling down next to the ensign, John pulled his melted deformed Starfleet insignia from his kit and pocketed it. Looking at the demons on the ground, Reaper couldn’t help but feel slightly nauseated. They were all small, and young, and had once been full of promise and joy. Now, they were burnt dead husks. That was how they got him. Children were now monsters.
Though John did have some clue of their existence, he wasn’t entirely sure. Those small footprints could have been caused by anything. Shaking his head, the ex-marine examined his surroundings.
Bingo.
On the far wall to his right was a vent, blackened due to the explosion. It looked as if it had been torn open. Blood dripped from the metal grate onto the dark floor. Some survived.
‘How intelligent were they?’ John wondered as he got back to his feet.
Making his way back over to the team, John handed Jim the ensigns badge. Kirk swallowed and nodded, taking the small object, only looking at it briefly before sticking it in his pocket. “We need to keep moving,” John said quietly, his eyes landing on each of the remaining members of the away team.
Jim clenched his jaw and led the group out.
Beckworth gave John a sharp nod in respect before following his captain back out into the fire.
Bitar sniffed, clenching her hands into fists and squeezing her eyes shut, hoping to stop the oncoming tears. She took several deep steadying breaths, and then she too left the room.
Only two were left standing in the dark. Pavel kicked away a broken tricorder, a deep, sad, and angry frown on his face.
Sighing, John ran a hand through his shortened hair, “I’m sorry Pavel. I know Gabe was a friend of yours.”
The kid looked up at Reaper and shook his head, and said with conviction “It’s not your fault.” before stalking out of the room.
John stood there alone in the dark and silence, letting Chekov’s words wash over him. He wanted to believe the kid, he really, really did, but something kept stopping him. A little voice in the back of his mind kept whispering how it was his fault, how if he had done a better job of getting rid of the UAC and C-24, they wouldn’t be in that position in the first place. Shaking his head, John strode out of the dark and into the messy, painfully bright corridor where the others waited for him.
He could doubt and hate himself later. He needed to get the others off of Genesis and back onto the Enterprise. In one swift movement, John picked up his old rifle and moved ahead of the group once more. They were getting close to the signal and John Grimm was already dreading what he’ll find. He knew it wasn’t going to be good.
Stepping over the bodies of the Hell Knights and the other infected, Reaper felt Jim move so he was shoulder to shoulder with him. “What’s on your mind, Bones? You got that weird crease going on between your eyes.”
John looked at Kirk and saw that the kid was trying to make him feel better. He let out a dry humorless chuckle, which only made Jim nudge him. “A lot is on my mind, Jim. You gotta be more specific.”
Kirk chewed on his lip and looked down at the heavy phaser rifle in his hands. ‘Like it’s doing me any good.’ the captain thought sourly. Humming, Jim thought about his words carefully, “You know the person who sent out the signal,” he stated, avoiding the topic of Lawrence and the obvious guilt Kirk knew his best friend was feeling. Though the man walking next to him was different from the man he met on the academy shuttle all those years ago. Jim looked at “Reaper” harder.
If he cocked his head to the side and squinted, he could still see his “Bones”. Kind-hearted, growly, piss and vinegar “Bones”. This man, “Reaper” was just an old, steely, tired version of the man he knew to be his friend. So, Jim, after a lot of thought, accepted him. He almost wanted to giggle, “My best friend is a two-hundred give or take a decade-year-old badass that fights monsters.”
“Jim you’re staring and it’s creepin’ me out. And if you’re back with me- yes I know who sent the signal out.”
Kirk shot Reaper a sad crooked smile. “Sorry I was just thinking that the old man jokes are gonna be a little too accurate.” he chuckled ruefully.
John snorted, rolling his eyes, “Like that would ever stop you.” A couple of well-covered snorts made him glance over his shoulder at Beckworth and Chekov. “Children the lot of ya,” he growled good-naturedly.
Beckworth smirked, “Well, if you want to get technical…”
John scoffed, and was about to retort, but his eyes landed on ensign Bitar at the back of the group, and he fell silent. Her face was stony, arms crossed, and away from everyone. She was closing herself off. Trying to stay emotionless, keeping everyone at arm’s length. Something he was all too familiar with. In his mind, Leonard McCoy was pounding on the walls of his mind, screaming obscenities at him. “Help her damnit! She won’t survive if you don’t!”
“Pavel how much further until we reach-” John didn’t even have to finish.
Chekov looked down at his PADD and pointed to a set of double sliding doors ahead. They were high-security clearance and locked down tight.
Fan-fucking-tastic.
“Chekov, help me get this door open,” Jim said, shouldering his rifle onto his back. The Russain quickly followed, leaving Beckworth, Bitar, and John to guard them.
Letting out a heavy sigh Reaper jerked his head, signaling Beckworth to watch over Kirk and Chekov as they worked. Receiving the silent order, Beckworth gave John a nod and a grunted: “See if you can get through to her.”
John slowly made his way over to ensign Bitar, making sure his presence was known. She was glaring heatedly at the ground, making a point to not look up at him. “Lyla,” John urged, bending slightly so he could catch her eyes. The young woman shifted so she was standing straight-backed and looking ahead. The image of a perfect officer. In all honesty, it made him sad, not just the Leonard McCoy part of him, but the John Grimm part as well. ‘They shouldn’t have to face my past’
“Lieutenant Commander,” Bitar acknowledged crisply. John let out a little breath, he nodded in understanding. Looking down at his feet, John let McCoy come back through, they trusted him. Not John.
“I’m sorry about Gabe, Lyla. I know the two of you were close,” he whispered gently. Lyla clenched her hands into fists to keep them from shaking, or possibly from committing insubordination. She shook her head and glared at John with tired eyes. Accusing.
“He was a good officer. A better friend, and he-” she cut herself off by choking back a sob. Inside John was warring with himself. On one side he wanted to be the soldier he once was, tell her to pull back her shoulders and move on. But on the other side was McCoy, shouting and screaming at him to “Be a fucking human being for once and give the girl some slack,”
Chewing on his bottom lip, John averted his eyes, giving the ensign a moment to collect herself. Once she quickly wiped her eyes and nose, John moved so he stood in front of her blocking everyone on the away team from her.
Lowering his voice, he whispered, “Gabe was on his way to great things. Someone to be proud of and to look up to. I’ve seen...it all happen before. A kid in a situation that he shouldn’t have been put in, in the first place. Doing the right thing and getting killed for it. And I won’t be able to stop seeing it. Over, and over, and over again. Lyla, I know I can’t make things better, and I can’t just pretend that things will be alright once this is all over.....None of this will happen to anyone else ever again. You can have my word on that, even if you no longer trust me.”
Ensign Bitar must have seen something in Reaper’s eyes because her own softened. She nodded, and she couldn’t help but feel sad for the ship’s CMO. He had, no matter what, always been there for every member of the crew. She was raw, mad at everything. She had lost a close friend and she had to point fingers. He was the closest target. Someone who had lied for years about who he was, what he was. The trust that Doctor Leonard McCoy had so carefully crafted over the many adventures the Enterprise had crumbled away like dust. Lyla knew she wasn’t the only one. The away team, and whoever was watching, wanted answers. Better than the ones he was offering.
She saw it. In the Captain’s eyes, in Pavel’s, and Beckworth’s. Hurt, confusion, anger, and betrayal. She knew that McCoy, or whoever he was, was well aware of it all, even if he tried to hide it, it weighed on him. And at that moment, the look in his eyes told her all she needed to know to trust him again. Even if it was only a fraction of what it used to be.
He felt what they were feeling, but maybe even more. Years upon years of pain, loneliness, and a hidden rage against the universe. It hurt him to hurt them. But, he was willing to suffer for them anyway.
Reaper. That’s what the file said. The stories were always horrible...about Grim Reapers but everyone seemed to have forgotten that they were angels, too.
Lyla gave John a small sad smile, remembering the advice he told her when she transferred onto the ship after Khan destroyed the city. Her family. She remembered being so angry all the time. A burning rage never going out.
He took one look at her and said with a knowing look, “Check your misery at the door. Keep it out. Otherwise, it will keep coming back to steal your soul.”
Lyla took a deep breath, and let the pain out. Gabe, she realized, wouldn’t want her to point fingers or be angry. He would want her to get the hell out of there alive. So, she reached out a hand and placed it on John’s arm, giving it a squeeze. She wasn’t sure if it was for her reassurance, or his.
“Check your misery at the door Doctor,” she whispered, her voice cracking.
The man stiffened ever so slightly before his shoulders dropped in defeat. “I thought I was supposed to make you feel better,” he muttered and the ensign simply shrugged, letting her hand fall back to her side.
“We’re all in this fight together. Gabe knew that, that’s why he...saved us. Made sure we got a chance and...I know that’s what you’re trying to do. Give us a chance. I don’t know if it will heal anything, but it could be a start.” With those final words ensign, Bitar strode away over to her C.O. her shoulders back, and her head held up high. She was ready for another round.
“We’re in!” Chekov called out triumphantly, and waved over the rest of the group to where he and Jim were working. Rushing over, John watched as Jim entered a passcode into the keypad to the right of the door. After a breath, they watched as the classified research lab opened up before them.
Pavel let out a quiet gasp of horror and John, in one swift movement, pulled his rifle from his back. Jim let out a string of Klingon curses. John swallowed, taking in the scene; blood of many colors coated the area; bodies lay strewn about haphazardly, all in different stages of decay.
Keeping everyone back, John entered first. He scanned the lab looking for any signs of danger, but it was clear. The dread in the pit of his stomach became bile in his throat, burning, wanting to come out. John stood stock still, his eyes boring into one dead body in particular.
From a medical point of view. A distanced point of view. He could tell the person was female, petite, her once chestnut hair coated in blood and grime. Her eyes were no longer green but a sightless grey. A familiar young woman whom he watched from a distance grow up. He always kept away from what family he had left but they did their damnedest to keep in touch with him. Even if he never really answers.
“Bones?”
Kirk’s voice jolted him back to the present. Clenching his jaw, Reaper stepped over various people to get to her. Looking at her more closely, he spotted the phaser on the floor just under one of her limp hands. Refusing to show anything, or even look away, John gently closed her eyes. His gaze moved to another object sitting in her lap. A PADD with a bloody picture was nestled in her lap.
The picture was a reprint but still managed to punch him in the gut all the same. It was of him holding a baby, a small rare smile gracing his face. John picked it up with a forced steady hand, remembering that day clearly in the back of his mind. It was the day his nephew had been born, of course, the picture had been taken before Sam had told him that they named the baby John.
After that, he was all half-hearted scowls and glares. The girl who sat as an empty husk before him was his nephew’s great-great-great-great granddaughter. Well, one of them at least. She was family and she was here because of him.
Jim stood silently by his side, unsure of what to say or do. “You knew her,” he whispered finally.
John looked over at his best friend and nodded. “She’s my niece.”
The words hung in the air like the smell of rot and burned flesh. John’s hand ghosted over the girl’s cheek as he reached for the PADD sitting in her lap. Jim carefully took hold of her Starfeel badge and gave a gentle tug until it came free with a snap. The name “Lieutenant Layla Grimm” engraved on the back. John turned away his attention down at the device in his hands rather than the death around him and forced his mind to focus.
Jim felt his heart crack and break for his friend. Pocketing the badge, Jim moved away from most of the bloody carnage over to Chekov, who was busy trying to get into the computer system. “Talk to me Chekov, what do you got?”
The navigator didn’t bother glancing up from his work. “It’s a mess, keptin. The jammer that is keeping us from the Enterprise is located on the main bridge of the station. I can tell this because there is more interference in this section...and that’s what I would do sir. The bridge is the hardest place to get to.”
Jim nodded in agreement, “So we have to make our way through a swarm of flesh-eating monsters to get to our goal. Great. Got a route planned out?”
Chekov grimaced but nodded all the same. “I do but it’s dangerous,”
Kirk sighed, his head rolling to the side, a look of exasperation on his face. “When is it not?” he asked rhetorically. Chekov looked past Kirk at McCoy - or Grimm - and shifted nervously, once again getting Jim’s attention. Following the ensign’s gaze, Jim sighed and rubbed the back of his neck.
“I also found this,” Pavel whispered, holding up a black drive. It was sleek and splashed with blood but appeared to be in working order. Taking it, Jim turned it in his hands and froze. He understood why Chekov was hesitant. There was a single word engraved on the drive. Not a word but a name.
Reaper.
Swallowing, Kirk looked at Pavel, nodding, he slipped the drive into his back pocket. Out of the hands of anyone else. Whatever was on it was safe with him.
“Jim!”
Whipping around at the sound of his name, Kirk spotted Bones at another terminal. His posture was stiff, jaw tight, and hands clenched into fists. John Grimm was anything but calm. Rushing to his side, Jim finally saw what had his friend tense and more pissed off than usual.
There, grinning wickedly and seductively on the screen, was Veera. When Jim entered her view she gave a little pout, but continued on talking,
“ - as I was saying, congratulations on getting to one of the research labs. Your...what did you call her John? Your niece? Oh, she did well, you should be proud of what she accomplished in a short amount of time! Fought bravely and all that...tragic death though. I wouldn’t have gone out that way but to each his own I guess…”
Kirk placed a calming hand on John’s arm as he gripped the desk. The metal twisting like puddy under his hands. “Either get to the point or fuck off,” he growled out eyes narrowing.
Veera chuckled, sitting up, she stretched, making sure Reaper got an eye full of cleavage before she settled again. Her white smile was more like a predator baring her teeth rather than something charming, John wasn’t amused.
Veera tapped a command into her velvet-covered chair and looked at them with a twisted smirk. The screens around them lit up each one showing part of John’s old lives. Some had pictures, some had rough sketches of a man with his face covered in shadows.
John, of course, kept his face blank but he felt his heart begin to race and mouth dry up. Jim wasn’t so quick to cover up his shock, curiosity, and horror. Veera practically purred at the sight.
“Section 31 and the organizations before it have been trying to keep an eye on you for quite some time. Little Miss Grimm did a wonderful job trying to make it disappear. She joined Starfleet, worked her way up, and managed to get her foot into 31 just before Marcus fell. She kept her head down and has been covering for you since then. She was so close to her ultimate goal in protecting her Uncle John.” Veera gave a mock pout, but it easily melted into a grin. She pulled a PADD from her seat, flicking through it she hummed and clicked her tongue. “Shame she failed. This is juicy stuff, John. Were you really a police officer? Where do you keep the andr-”
Veera’s face was suddenly gone in a flash of sparks and shattered glass. Jim jumped back in surprise, a cry of concern dying on his lips as he watched his best friend turned mystery examined his glass-covered fist with disinterest and a scowl.
“Doctor!” Jim didn’t have to voice his concerns because Chekov did it for him. The navigator was watching John’s hand with wide eyes.
As John picked and plucked the glass from his hand with a grumble as Jim and Pavel watched the skin heal almost instantly.
“You were a cop?” Jim asked, cocking his head to the side.
Reaper grimaced, “detective,” he muttered, glancing over at the monitor that held his record. Jim followed his gaze and pressed his lips into a thin line in order to keep his curiosity at bay. John rolled his eyes at the captain, “We’ll talk about it later.”
“McCoy, Captain!” Bitar called from across the room. The three men turned to see Lyla jerk her head in Beckworth’s direction. The security officer was hunched over a terminal, cursing up and down.
Pulling out the last piece of glass from his hand, John flicked it away before moving over to Beckworth. “Henry.”
The man in question looked up and indicated to the screen “We have a problem,”
“You mean bigger than the one we’re already dealing with?” Reaper asked with a raised eyebrow. With a sigh, John tapped at the screen bringing up a bigger picture of what Beckworth was looking at. Security footage of the medical facility was on the screen and he really didn’t like what he was looking at.
Men and women stalked through the mall with purpose. Their formation was tight and professional, and their shirts glowed light blue in the dim emergency lighting. “That’s not good,” he muttered. Zooming in, John memorized each of their faces and noted that they were all covered in blood. Some of it was fresh. Too fresh for it to be from someone infected.
Veera’s laugh echoed through the station. The group of Section 31 agents tensed and paused, their phaser rifles pointing every which way as they tried to pin down where the voice was coming from.
“A little bit of a surprise for you John. Just a little something to keep things interesting. You see, I gave team Delta an incentive. If they take you and yours down before you get to the bridge then they get to leave. Free and clear and whole.”
“Shit, fucking damnit!” Reaper cursed. Whipping around, he looked at Chekov pleadingly. Without having to say a word, Paval ran to the main terminal and began typing feverishly.
“I want it all gone, Chekov! We can’t leave any of this here. Bones, what’s the plan here?”
Reaper looked over at Kirk and Beckworth. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Bitar running around to each screen doing as Chekov instructed. Both were trying to keep his past right where it was supposed to be. In the past.
His mind ran a mile a second. Coming up with plans wasn’t exactly his forte, even after all this time. Sighing, he closed his eyes, thinking about the layout of the medical center; he had to assume that they would most likely come from two different directions. To box them in.
“We need to go. Get to the biggest part of the station. The mall will be the best place for us to either lose them or…” he trailed off letting both Jim and Henry fill in the blanks themselves.
Jim grumbled at the prospect of taking out the team of agents but at that point, there wasn’t exactly much of a choice.
“Chekov!”
“Da, it is ready. Doctor…” Pavel looked up at John with a small smile as he stepped away from the terminal. Stepping forward John saw that the kid had gathered every file Starfleet had on him, a box blinked on the screen asking if he wished to delete the information. “You do the honors, doctor,” Chekov whispered. Swallowing hard, John hit the “Yes” command and watched as Chekov’s virus washed away everything.
Nodding, the navigator gathered his things before looking up. “That was a mere copy of the files. No one should be able to get them from here ever again. Veera has another, but that should be easy to get rid of if we get her PADD...but the main file is-” Pavel looked down, almost ashamed with himself. “On a server. I don’t know where it is exactly but I do have a name…it’s at a location named: Ares.”
John placed a hand on the young man’s shoulder. “Thank you for what you did, even if it was just a piece.”
Letting his hand fall he moved to the blast door where Jim and the others waited patiently. Jim gave John a nod and opened the door. Moving ahead of the group, John raised his rifle and took back his misery.
He has never been one to take his own advice.

Star Trek Secret Santa 2020
A fic for @saritaadam for @startreksecretsanta for the prompt of “TOS Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura on their own adventures.” Thanks to @that-one-curly-haired-chick and @wreckx for looking it over for me.
“I’m still not sure I get it, “Chekov whispered under the latest round of applause and laughter.
Sulu was already prying the Russian’s communicator out of his hand and sliding it towards the middle of the table. “Not much to ‘get’ here, pal. Just hope you aren’t unlucky.”
Moments ago, when Chekov had been hovering in the doorway of the recreation room to see a group of senior officers huddled around a ring of communicators on a table, his first impressions were those of a cult. The deck officer who glanced up and immediately asked “You in?” did little to assuage that. Yet Chekov was smart enough to know that you could hardly afford to alienate other crewmembers in the early days of your first assignment. If the four hundred something people on this ship were all members of some secret cult, well, it was time for him to learn its laws.
Luckily, Lieutenant Sulu had recognized him and immediately waved him over to sit by him, persuading the others to let him have one round to watch before joining in the fun.
Unfortunately, Chekov was still confused as to what this fun was.
“Is this something for all in Starfleet? A game everyone plays?”
Sulu smiled and shook his head. “Only we’ve got Uhura. It’s basically a free show, Pavel. The price is just—” His words faded as the bosun whistle on the wall panel sounded.
“Kirk to Sulu.”
“Shit.” Sulu groaned.
Uhura rose gracefully to a chorus of cheers and groans, which quieted as she reached the panel.
“Kirk to Sulu.”
“Nyota, be kind,” Sulu begged before he was promptly shushed by the rest of the table.
Uhura gave a wink before extending a graceful finger to the comm. “Sulu here.”
Chekov blinked. The last round that he’d witnessed, he’d assumed Uhura was just answering comms in silly voices for fun. Knowing that her voice was now a perfect impersonation of Sulu’s. . . well, apparently that was the price of the show.
“Sulu, regarding our course to Agaron PrimeI. If we were to make a stop at the Canopus  first, how much would that delay our arrival?”
The table exploded into a muted explosion of giggles as every eye turned expectantly towards Sulu, who had sprung into action. Two fingers, then six, then four. A jabbing finger. Eight fingers. His hands held close together, then spread far apart.
Chekov looked at him as if he’d lost his mind. Uhura kept her cool gaze. “Did you say Canopus, Captain?”
Two, six, then four fingers. Three jabbing motions. Eight fingers, A decidedly frustrated and sarcastic spreading of the arms.
“Yes, Canopus. How long, Sulu?”
A pause. “I’m sorry sir…I’ll need time to work that out.”
“Hmmm. I see. See that it doesn’t take you too long to find a calculator, Lieutenant. Kirk out.”
“TWENTY SIX SOLAR DAYS,” Sulu burst out as soon as the red light on the wall dimmed. “IT’S FOUR POINT 8 LIGHTYEARS, AVERAGING 5.4 WARP, CALCULATED IN THEIR LOCAL TIME, THAT’S TWENTY SIX SOLAR—”
“Don’t tell her, laddie,” chuckled Scotty as the rest of the table burst into laughter. “Sounds to me like you’ve got a call to make.”
Sulu slumped in his chair and dejectedly sipped his drink. “One more round. The captain already thinks I can’t do warp equations at the ready. Five more minutes won’t damage my reputation any further.”
“I’d spend that time practicing your charades,” Uhura added lightly as she came behind Sulu’s chair. “No sun? No days? I’m not a mind reader, you know.”
“Just a life ruiner,” Sulu muttered darkly, but his mouth twitched as he brought his glass to his lips again.
“I do think that I’ve only one more round left in me, so before you all—" Uhura frowned as one of the communicators on the table buzzed with its whistle. “Is that…Pavel’s?”
Chekov’s heart sunk. “Da.” His shiny communicator stood out in the ring of dingy dull devices. “Yes, it’s mine.”
Everyone else reached out to pocket their device, murmuring in surprise as Uhura stayed put behind Sulu.
“That’s not fair to me, he’s only just got here!”
“You’ve had seven days, Nyota! You mastered Klingon barroom slang in half that time.”
“We do tell everyone you’re the best at this, you know.”
Uhura crossed her arms. “I’ll have you know Klingon barroom slang is quite easy to pick up once you’ve mastered one particular expletive. I’ve hardly gotten to spend any time with Pavel so far!”
“Yes, give the lady a break, please. It’s not like I have any noticeable accent to copy,” Chekov added helpfully, wondering why so many people broke out into snickers again.
“Sorry, Nyota. Your own rules, after all,” said Sulu firmly, gracefully reaching across and holding the communicator over his head towards Uhura.
“Sore loser,” Uhura muttered, but opened the communicator anyway and took a deep breath. “Chekov here.”
A mutter of approval circled the table at the reveal of Uhura’s first Russian accent. Not half bad, Chekov admitted to himself. She did sound like she came from St. Petersburg instead of Moscow, but he could take that up with her later.
“Ensign Chekov, this is Mister Spock.”
Whispers of excitement now. Sulu glanced over in time to see Chekov’s mouth beginning to open, and quickly slapped his hand across it. “Rules, Pavel.”
“Yes, Mister Spock.”
“Ensign, I am calling regarding our latest discussion that we had about the—”
Uhura’s eyes met Chekov’s, which were widened in shock. Hurriedly, she cut Spock off. “Da.”
“You know to what I’m referring?”
“Yes.”
“And you are prepared?
“…Da.”
A muffled scream came from behind Sulu’s hand, and other officers had to lean forward to keep Chekov from thrashing out of his chair. Uhura grimaced. “Vell, actually…”
“All can be arranged in more detail the next time we meet, Ensign. I look forward to seeing you at 1900 hours. Spock out.”
Sulu quickly withdrew his hand before it could be bitten off as the Russian threw himself out of his chair and gestured wildly towards the whole table. “CRAZY, ALL OF YOU. INSANE!”
“I tried to keep it neutral! I said ‘Da!” Uhura offered defensively.
“A WERY IMPORTANT ‘DA.’” Chekov broke down into a string of Russian which, if Uhura’s face was any clue, followed a drastic line of thought.
“Pavel, Pavel…” Sulu awkwardly stood next to the frantic ensign and grabbed his shoulder. “I know you just got here, and Mister Spock can seem…well, he’s a lot at first. But whatever you promised, Uhura can help you with it.” He looked up to meet Nyota’s glare. “Uhura and I can help you with it.”
********************************************************************************************************
Sulu broke into what he hoped looked like a nonchalant jog as he followed Chekov down the hall. Uhura was keeping a much more leisurely pace behind, taking the time to greet every crewmember they passed.
“Pavel,” Sulu hissed after having to apologize to the fourth redshirt that Chekov nearly plowed into. “You said that you--Uhura--agreed to present your research to Mr. Spock tonight. We can help you finish, you’ve got plenty of time!”
Chekov slowed in front of a laboratory door, nervously looking up and down the corridor, and even taking a peek into an adjacent Jeffries Tube. Uhura gracefully ducked her head to hide her smile. “Research is done, only....too much.”
“Pavel, I don’t--” the door whooshed open and behind him, Sulu heard a particular Klingon expletive.
“Pavel, you’ve only been here a few days!” Uhura cried in dismay, looking at the parts spread across the floor. “This looks like you spent months dismantling this!”
“Well, I guess I can’t make fun of Riley for his lab accident anymore,” Sulu said lazily, picking up a piece of circuitry to inspect. “Remind me to never introduce you to him.”
“This is serious!” Chekov was practically vibrating between the different corners of the room. “I was finishing my research and the machine was slow, so I try to improve it, but then it jammed, and I thought if I took it apart I could find problem--”
“You know who would be best equipped to fix this?” Sulu murmured to Uhura. “One Mister Spock.”
“Oh, hush,” Uhura scolded over Chekov’s wounded cry. “There’s always Mr. Scott. He was just with us, I can go--”
“No, no, no!” Chekov pleaded, his eyes wide. “No senior officers. Nobody important. I cannot risk having the first thing on my record be a demerit!”
“Or an invoice,” Uhura added lightly.
“Thanks for the compliment, Pavel. But neither of us are engineers.”
“Speak for yourself.” Uhura plucked the circuit out of Sulu’s hands. “I’ve done emergency surgery on my array to at least hide most of the damage here.”
“Fix it enough so that some other poor soul will come and break it next. Sneaky.”
Chekov looked as though he were about to faint. “It’s not my intention to--”
“We’re just kidding, Pavel. Grab a hyperspanner. If we’re going to let Mr. Spock in here in time, we’d better hustle.”
********************************************************************************************************
When Mr. Spock entered the environmental sciences lab at 18:58, he found a more sociable scene than he was anticipating.
“Lieutenant Uhura. Mr. Sulu,” he nodded. “What brings you to this part of the ship?”
“Just getting to know the new Ensign, sir. We’ll be out of your way now. Uhura, would you like to join me for dinner?”
“Of course, Hikaru.” Uhura grasped Chekov’s hand for a moment, before placing it firmly on the center of the console plate, giving it an extra press before leaving to follow Sulu. “STAY confident, Pavel, and good luck.”
Sulu waited until they were a whole corridor away before letting his head roll back with a sigh. “He’s going to be trouble.”
“All the good ones are.” Uhura and Sulu reentered the same rec room as before just as a bosun whistle sounded from the wall panel.
“Uhura! I’ll wager my Enolian spice wine that you can’t fool whoever’s on the other end of that one!”
Uhura only paused for a moment before shrugging and making her way over. Sulu shook his head, dumbfounded. “You never learn, do you?”
“Be a dear and fetch my dinner and I’ll share some of the wine with you.”
“Yes, ma’am” Sulu saluted and made his way over to the replicators. He was about to punch in his order when he saw a figure duck behind a receptacle. Curious, he peeked around.
Captain Kirk was hunched over his communicator. “Ensign, you sound unwell. Should I call Sickbay?”
Kirk looked up to glance across the room and immediately met Sulu’s gaze. He smirked, put a finger to his lips, and winked before speaking again. “You really sound congested, Ensign. Don’t make me make this an order.” He then leaned away from the communicator to whisper to Sulu, “Keep quiet about this and I’ll keep quiet about the spice wine.”
“Aye, sir,” Sulu whispered back and turned back to the replicator. The new Ensign might be a handful, but he would fit right in on this captain’s ship.

Pride Prompts 2020 Day 3- Caught Looking Their Way
Jim was finally halfway through his shift and it was one of the few shifts that was completely uneventful. No rogue ships, no strange organisations or unknown planets. Just sparkling, never ending space.
He didn't want to seem reckless, like he enjoyed being on the verge of death or constantly in battles. Everyone was enjoying the down time. Yet no one could deny the immense boredom that was coming from travelling between galaxies.
A few days ago, there had been a mild rendezvous at a small Class-M planet that the Federation wanted to sign a treaty with after years of disagreements. No one had been killed, a few injured when both were fatigued with the petty arguments, but no fatalities.
The first few days of no action served everyone well, it was almost like shore leave explained McCoy. Nonetheless, after three days of nothing but empty space and the same routine, Jim was running out of distractions.
He'd done his rounds walking around the ship, checking in on every sector and how they were doing. Every now and then he contacted a part of the ship, engineering, weapons, but they had just as little to do as those on the bridge.
This was how he found his mind completely empty and his eyes naturally resting upon the fascinating image that was his first officer- Mr. Spock.
He, unlike the rest of the crew, had found some way of occupying himself. Chekov wanted to research something about Russia, obviously, and Spock had been strangely eager to do the work for him. His logic was that Chekov should focus on navigation rather than a non-essential project.
Spock appeared content and busy, lost in the world of history and research. This was the exact reason why Jim had taken to leaning on his right arm and gazing blankly at him. He didn't care if anyone caught him staring or possibly smiling gloofily at the half-Vulcan while his mind cleared and the boredom dissipated.
The Captain hadn't noticed that Uhura was laughing behind her hand and that Sulu had been elbowing Chekov for him to witness this blatant display of affection.
Jim was immersed in thought about Spock. His eloquence was currently on his mind, the way he formed his words so calmly while directing orders or stating the illogical. Another aspect of him was how comedic he could be without intending it, there had been many a time when his gratitude for Bones' insults had made him chuckle.
He sighed, shifted slightly as he was reminded of the bravery of his Science Officer. Despite other crew members' insistence, he had shown countless times his willingness to stand up to the wrong and to carry on fighting even if everything appeared bleak.
Jim was enamoured, there was a spell cast upon him that would not go away for a while. He wouldn't argue that he was more than partial to the man, the mere sight of Spock could lighten his day and he admitted to feeling fearful for him on missions when he got into any danger. It came with the job but the irrationality that came with love didn't care if he was employed by danger. If his heart could have its way, Spock wouldn't ever be in a life or death situation ever again.

"Mr Chekov, I have found some interesting information in my research that you may want to hear," Spock said. As he turned around, he quickly realised how every crew member around him was watching him and Jim intensely.
He didn't really know why, perhaps it was the boredom that had possessed the crew without anything life threatening to do. His logic saw through their complaints however, there was rarely a moment when there was nothing to be done. And today was not an exception to that rule.
"Mr. Chekov, do you want to hear the information?" Spock repeated closer to the man in question, who stopped his laughter and agreed to hear what he had to say. "Well, did you happen to know that one of your descendants invested in a company that would discover a more efficient fuel for Earth Spacecrafts?"
"No, I didn't know that,"
"Well, you can add that to the official doings of the Russians that you inform us all about at every moment," He said, moving to sit back down before he laid eyes on why the crew had been watching so crudely at him and the Captain.
Jim was leaning on one arm in his chair, eyes glistening and partially glazed over in a daydream like haze. His ridiculous smile plastered on his face, that, if Spock ever admitted his emotions, did make him happier on certain occasions- not that he would ever acknowledge that his human side sometimes overruled his logic.
The Captain had not seemed to notice anything he had said, or anything around him at all for that matter. His cheeks were flushed faintly as he persistently looked at him. Jim's interest did spark something in him, a kind of gratitude that he was being recognised, although he couldn't say what he had done that was so interesting.
Spock raised an eyebrow and stepped forward, towards the Captain's chair and the lovesick man occupying it. He vaguely waved in front of him, trying, and failing, to get his attention. If he was mindlessly staring at him then he should confront him about it.
He had been told, by his mother and some other infatuated crew members that stealing glances at someone was often a symptom of love. Perhaps it was the longing and the passion for that person that made them infinitely provocative.
Spock had felt this need. There had been many a moment, no matter how embarrassing for him to confess to himself, when he lay wondering about the Captain, if he was as lonely as he was, whether he wanted him, no, needed him as much as he did. It made him feel ashamed.
What would Sarek think, to see him acting so foolishly when it came to his feelings. Spock was a Vulcan, and Vulcans are logical, not emotional.
But he was also Human too.
"Captain," Spock said, abandoning his efforts at waving. "Captain, you are staring,"
No answer, just the same love struck look.
"Captain," He sighed. "Jim!"
Jim snapped out of his trance at the call of his name, blinking a few times before he too realised the amount of eyes that were finding him so humorous. He sat up and dropped his arm onto his lap, looking back at Spock again.
"Yes, Mr. Spock,"
"Captain, may I have a word with you," He moved closer and lowered his volume. "In private, off the bridge,"
For the first time for the entirety of their shift, their eyes met. They agreed without words, Jim putting Sulu in temporary charge until he returned and left to wander the corridors.
~~
Most of the corridors were empty, with crewmembers being at their post and little need for extra hands, the two were safe to talk.
"I thought it would be better to confront you about your staring in private, Captain," Spock began, unconsciously leading them to a deserted conference room.
Jim hummed and pulled a chair for himself and his First Officer, "Yes, I hope you aren't offended, I wasn't doing it with malicious intent,"
Spock gave him a ghost of a smile that eased his worries, "Oh, I'm sure of that, Captain," He said, placing his hands on the table, close to Jim's. "Infact, I hypothesise that you were staring out of desire or passion, rather than anger or prejudice,"
Jim grinned. If Spock was admitting that his observations were because of his developing crush, then that meant his feelings were logical, and he only acted on what was logical.
"Well, you would be correct," Their eyes met again, and if he was not mistaken, a glimmer of something shone in the other man's eyes. "But how did you come to that conclusion, when desire and passion are two very strong emotions?"
Spock turned his head and moved his hands closer a touch. He hesitated for a moment, clearly thinking of what to do or to say that would maintain his mask.
As much as Jim liked to tease him about his lack of emotions, he knew they were there and were more prevalent than his culture would like them to be. He also knew of how this plagued him, to have such a human flaw that was so hard to deal with.
"It would be illogical for me to pretend that I had no experience in this way of thinking," This shocked Jim, was Spock actually admitting that he occasionally thought with emotion? "Despite how much I long for me to say that I have heard that staring is a symptom for desiring someone, I too have found myself analysing you, watching you and absorbing everything about you with little resistance,"
"Are you saying that-"
"Yes, I am admitting that I am feeling things for you, Jim. Deep, raw and human things for you, that have made me feel guilt to no end over how it betrays my blood," Spock took a long shuddering breath and made another leap, his hands reached out and interlocked with Jim's.
Jim tightened his grip on his hands, inching closer to him before whispering, "You are not betraying anyone, Spock, you're just being true to who you are. You can love a person while still upholding logic, you have emotions but they don't need to rule you just because you acknowledge they're there,"
He leant his head forwards until his forehead bumped with Spock's. This close up, he could see the multitude of colours that made up his irises, could see the green tint of his skin and lines on his face smooth out. He was letting himself relax and enjoy what he had, finally.
They sat there for a while, hands gripped tightly, as they would not be anywhere important for a while. For now, they could enjoy each other's company. Spock could let himself relish in his devotion and Jim would not be humorously shocked due to finding out how intimate hand holding is for Vulcans- something he would damn McCoy for not telling him about later.
So for now, they would sit in the infinite stars of space and wait until the next crisis approached them. Because they had each other now, and that meant everything in the world.
