what a great time to remind myself that the reason I sometimes feel like emotional things are life or death is because, as I realized when I was actually for real dying, the intensity of my emotions in some of my romantic relationships literally felt life or death. you know how babies and small children can feel something so strong and so new, that they don't know how to process, that it can feel like they're dying? yeah that but I was 18-22. I just...was so severely emotionally neglected as a child my nervous system didn't learn how to deal with emotions related to relationship rupture or anything even slightly perceived as such.

this is why I spent all of 2022 thinking I wasn't stressed. because I experienced almost none of this life-or-death, suffocating, emergency feeling in my body. that, to me, was my lower threshold for stress. nothing less registered. sometimes I still have moments where I can't recognize smaller stressors as existing, especially after the medical trauma year from hell; if you spend enough time with your nervous system screaming that it's dying, the warning lights start to burn out.

writing advice for characters with a missing eye: dear God does losing an eyes function fuck up your neck. Ever since mine crapped out I've been slowly and unconsciously shifting towards holding my head at an angle to put the good eye closer to the center. and human necks. are not meant to accommodate that sorta thing.

#like it started with me just holding things more towards my right #but the things started shifting more towards center and my head turns instead #like. when im driving especially i have to keep my head turned so i can see on coming traffic #and when im around people ive noticed i position myself so my body is facing them and then turn my head to get them actually #centered in my now very right biased field of view #so anyways draw blorbo bleebus cheated to that 3/4s angle without guilt #at least one one eyed fucker actually does that

Overview of some topics when it comes to drawing characters who are burn survivors.

DISCLAIMER. Please keep in mind that this is an introductory overview for drawing some burn scars and has a lot of generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People. I'm calling this introductory because I hope to get people to actually do their own research before drawing disabled & visibly different characters rather than just making stuff up. Think of it as a starting point and take it with a grain of salt (especially if you have a very different art style from mine).

Talking about research and learning... don't make your burn survivor characters evil. Burn survivors are normal people and don't deserve to be constantly portrayed in such a way.

second way more important edit: How are people seeing this post where I specifically talk about burn survivors being normal, real people, and still tag this as "TW body horror"? Not a single one of these drawings or pictures is a fresh injury. All of them are healed. How the hell would you feel if someone tagged a photo of you as "trigger warning: gore"?

Disabled people are not your fucking body horror. Grow up.
