One thing I love about Pirates of the Caribbean is that as much as they’re chasing after a life of freedom and without a governing body or laws or social constraints, their lawlessness doesn’t free them from the consequences AND THEY KNOW THAT. When Jack is first explaining a life of piracy to Will, he says the only rules that matter are what a man can do and what he can’t. To all those that have no familiarity with it, they think this means pirates just go around killing whoever they want. And in a sense they’re right. But Jack goes on to explain that they’re not free from the consequences of their actions and have to reconcile with that, preferably before committing said action. So he can kill Will right then and there and have a nice quiet voyage to Tortuga, but he would be too shorthanded to actually make port.
True enough, they have the code, which is regarded and enforced as law. But that’s only because deviation from the code often has negative consequences compared to the inconvenience of adhering to it. Once everyone starts acting on their own, everything continues to degrade. Elizabeth kills Jack and as a consequence they need to get him back for the meeting of the pirate lords. Will conspires with the Singapore pirates to take control of the Pearl, while they are also conspiring with the East India Company to take the Pearl for themselves. As a consequence, the EIC has everyone at their mercy. It’s not until they return to the code and start negotiating with each other that they’re able to get on the same page and escape.
Then things get out of hand again at Shipwreck Cove until one man says to “hang the code,” for which he is immediately killed. Captain Teague, in his many years of experience, knows that it’s better to kill one of their own than have him start acting on his own and ultimately getting them all killed or inspiring others to do the same. Only by keeping to the code and electing a king to lead them in war were they able to claim victory.
So yes, their piracy is a claim to freedom. Yes, they still have a law. But the law is designed to keep them free.

on self love
my thoughts and opinions on self love and bodies. i tries to write in the style of Khalil Gibran, especially in his philosophical work of “The Prophet”. hope i help someone with this ❤️
would that you could cast a loving gaze upon your shell that houses your infinite soul in a minute body, i would bestow such a gift to you. but, since we are so critical of ourselves where we forgive others, let me try and bestow this feeling on you.
when i look upon my face, i see not the evil of the spots where the oil of the fruits of my labor have seeped beneath my skin, nor the evil of the darkness that covers the sockets of my eyes where they lie, like an eclipse to the sun, but rather, the good of those things. i see the beauty of my wonderfully round face where others might see a flaw. i look onto myself with pride, not so that i may take away my love for others to give to myself, but so that i may take my self love and give unto others. for what is it to love others, but not have that same compassion for yourself? it is to sing a love song without lyrics, the chorus no more soothing to man’s ears than nails on a chalkboard. it is to sow seeds of empty affection with no water or sunlight, and expect them to feed you. you cannot feed others with your bread if you cannot bake the loaf yourself.
when i look upon the mass of flesh and blood that the universe has weaved for me, i am proud to be inside it. i look at the ripples on where my body is warped like a tree growing with joy, for you cannot have an sea without ripples covering it, ever constantly in a cycle of sending itself into the sky, to be kept in clouds, to finally rain back into itself. so too does your soul go to your body, keeping itself on the earth as you hold yourself in clouds, then when you lay down in the sea, your body becomes dust to fuel the creation of another body.
when i look upon my belly, full and ripe, i sing a love song to myself in my heart. for what is to have a body but to nurture it, hoping it may grow? it is to wonder why you are lesser than for doing what your body was meant to do, to be forever ashamed of what should be rejoiced. when you eat, you take a communion to the god of your body, the son of your heart, and the holy spirit inside you. it is to drink from the cup of life verily, and happily, just as the bride and groom of a wedding drink to celebrate a bond of love. food is one in the same, it is love.
it is to bake bread with your neighbor in hopes it may feed him. it is to touch shoulders with your lover as you cook a meal that will fill your bellies as full as your souls. it is to rejoice in the tradition of those since long passed, and to stand with the dearly beloved dead, and stand in their shadow. when you eat, say to yourself, “i am taking an oath of love to my friends whom i have eaten with and spent countless hours with, the people who fed me beneath their roofs, the loves in life i have made along the way, weaved together by the binding cloth of a shared need to nourish our bodies and minds.” and when you drink, say to yourself, “i am taking an oath of joy to those i have loved and lost, whom i drank with and the hours passed by like water droplets in a river. i am drinking so that the fluid my touch every vein in my bloodstream, just as their affections did.”
for me, i was not always granted this luxury of pleasure that i now call self love. it is only in loving life that you may find such a thing. many people make the mistake of assuming all souls are meant for the bodies they are assigned to. the hand of the universe is random, and human beings are too complex for all feeling to be housed inside said bodies. if you must change the shell that inhabits you, do it not so that you may love yourself, do it because you love yourself. for even the sweet wine that touches your lips must have the grapes crushed and processed first. the wine cannot say onto the grapes, “i am better and more sweet than you, for i am crushed and distilled and complex,” when the grapes are also good. your original bodies are good, just as your bodies to sculpt from marble are good, though the grapes alone cannot serve the same purpose wine does. but if the grapes are sour beforehand, you crush a bitter wine that stains the tongue. when you form yourself into your delighted being, you craft yourself from dirt, like God did with Adam and Eve. the dirt cannot hold you alone, but with crafting, it can turn into something bigger, something more suited for our souls. to mold your finite body to house your infinite spirit better is an act of worship of yourself, but it cannot be taken by a corrupt preacher. love yourself, then the winds of the heavens may bless your journey on your winding road of self completion.
in truth, your body longs to love itself, like the river longs to join the sea again, but seems impossible with its winding curves and and long stretches. but the water droplet will indeed find the sea, just as you will find self love. let yourself love life, and in loving life lives the key to loving yourself.
tagging @gaykneecaps, since we had a discussion on this not too long ago. thank you for discussing it with me so that i could put my thoughts to paper. i would very much like to know what you think of it, love ya ❤️
edit: also tagging @ineffabildaddy !!

Why do I keep seeing people talking about I Saw The TV Glow saying things like “it will destroy your life” and “you shouldn’t watch it if you’re old, because then it’ll be too late.” Like my brother in christ, did we watch the same fucking movie??

Halloween costume ideas I had for Stro Bro and his gray elephant-legged lump of a brother
With some of the stuff Strong Sad likes canonically, and some of the characters he's dressed as in the Halloween toons, you can't tell me he wouldn't be a fan of Peter Lorre films. So I drew him as Ugarte from Casablanca. It was hard finding the right balance between his and Lorre's facial features, but at least the color scheme didn't take too much effort to figure out.
The Strong Bad as Chucky art is actually one I made last year (ironically after Halloween had already ended, but I didn't wanna wait for the next Halloween to draw it by the time I thought it up). But I'm still pretty proud of it, so I figured I'd dig it back up and also post it here.

Me, with two different Tavs, mocking Orin with the fact that Bhaal and Sarevok don't care about her and have both betrayed her: ha-ha, get fucked lobster woman, shouldn't have done all the murders
Me, with Durge, after practically no new information about her character has been added, but Durge's story has reframed her as the unwanted child, the always-second-best, looked down upon and despised by everyone whose approval she desperately sought her entire life because they created her to do so, while the framing of two of them as siblings creates the implication that they are of the same foundation, coming from the same place and following the same course up until the point when, through what was essentially a random chance, one that she never got, one of them was thrust upon a path to possible freedom and redemption - a path that inevitably leads them to crushing her as the very entities that set those fates in motion cheer on: oh.

I don't get why people hate the timeline so much, its not like you can't pretty much completely ignore it when you play the games. The only time it even approaches mattering to the story is when there is an explicit sequel like botw and totk or zelda and zelda 2
Hey sorry your ask got lost in the sauce of my broken tumblr, but: yeah!
I mean, I get why in some sense. It's been a heated point of debate and I think some people understandably resent the space it has taken not only in fandom discourse, but in how people began to understand the game and its narrative aesthetic choices. There is such a thing as over-rationalizing everything to hard logic, and sometimes it's just not the fandom for that --especially when you begin to forget it's all just fan theory and start to forget what the games are supposed to be like and evoke beyond just strict facts displayed in a linear way.
What I think bugs me with TotK in particular is that it both evokes and relies on continuity and the idea of a timeline, of archeology, of history itself, while being so loose and vacant with it that it both is doing Timeline Shit while also completely failing to understand why some parts of the fandom were invested in Timeline Shit to begin with.
But that's just my two cents of course!
#asks#tloz#timeline#totk critical#thanks for the ask!#I do... feel two ways about that myself#I think pure evocation is genuinely one of zelda's greatest storytelling strengths#that mood is sufficient and enough in itself and doesn't always need justification#it is the way the games center story --and that's genuinely wonderful and a strong take on narrative in games#as something freeflowing and accompanying gameplay rather than the opposite#and to ignore that and focus on hard facts all of the time kind of misses the point of the games' stories to a degree#BUT#I also get quite annoyed at the weird condescencion towards fans that do decide to engage with the stories more factually#especially since this is either revelatory regarding some of nintendo's choices#(that the aesthetics of evil are so tied to The Desert TM while taking so many inspirations from european fairy tales for example)#(it's not neutral even if we ignore ingame “lore”)#or just a great fodder for creativity and narrative play#and it is a part of the IP too!! just as much as dungeons and items and musics and curiosity-driven exploration!!#I do have beef with people not resonating with that aspect thinking others that do so are just stupid or childish#and that you can only have an enlightened relationship with zelda if you like it “the right way”#(which is somehow always mechanics/logic-driven which is. interesting to me.)#(or in a completely passively aesthetic way as in “I like fairies they're pretty”)#but you know it's the weird Triforce Shirt Dude stigma thing#that notion that you can (and must!) Love Zelda Deeply and Defensively#but you cannot be *passionate* about Zelda#then it's weird and immature#I don't know I feel like there's a lot to analyze in that arbitrary dychotomy#anyway sorry for the mega novel in the tags!!

I made a similar post before a long ass time ago for the other three da protags but now it's time for rook, this time in poll format <3
as always feel free to ramble about your ocs in the tags!! 👀
#💾#dragon age#mostly threw this together bc i think it's a fun dragon age character development question#and i wanted to bring some oc community engagement to the dash today#community? comradery? positivity? idk#← rare moment of me not minding if one of my posts breaks containment#ive had this sitting in my drafts forever and kept forgetting about it so whatever. go my scarab#also i want to make a spirit version but i cant have 2 polls in the same post. L#anyway. for lleyth it's actually hard for me to figure out for once bc like i could see pride for obvious reasons including solas#but at the same time i think lleyth is... actually quite humble and does not believe themself to be any better or more qualified than anyon#like they dont want the position they're in at all and they doubt their own leadership skills constantly#and they do what they must bc they have to. not bc 'they're the only one who can (do it right)' like solas wants to believe ab himself#and i think people who make good targets for pride are people who would do anything for power. lleyth does not want that#which leads me to think they would probably be targeted by despair.#i think they are someone who is used to being forced to lock away their sadness and either turn it into useful rage or compartmentalize it#but there is just. a deep and profound sense of not belonging anywhere and doubting their place in the world/others' lives#and if they weren't the type of person whose instincts kick in like a failsafe and make them keep fighting no matter what#i feel like they really would be stopped in their tracks by an overwhelming feeling of futility and misery#and there are a Lot of miserable moments in lleyth's life a demon could use to manipulate that within them 😔#plus despair seems to be the polar opposite of determination. which considering spite really likes/is drawn to lleyth... yeah. yeah#and the fact that despair demons constantly single out rook in combat is like. haha whats going on there bud........#and i personally think the inverse of this question (what spirit would be drawn to them) answer would be determination#bc damn kid you don't know how to quit. you will punch up at the cost of even your own fists and it's admirable#constantly swinging at something bigger than you that you cant take down etc etc#*take me to war by the crane wives starts playing as i lean out over the balcony smoking a cigarette*#take me to war honey i dare you. i'll be the sweetest thing to ever scare you <3 etc etc#plus its also tasty to me to think about lucanis having to break them out of the Despair Mind Prison#by chipping away at all of the awful things they believe about themself. as payback#🫵 get loved and adored idiot
