One thing I love about Pirates of the Caribbean is that as much as they’re chasing after a life of freedom and without a governing body or laws or social constraints, their lawlessness doesn’t free them from the consequences AND THEY KNOW THAT. When Jack is first explaining a life of piracy to Will, he says the only rules that matter are what a man can do and what he can’t. To all those that have no familiarity with it, they think this means pirates just go around killing whoever they want. And in a sense they’re right. But Jack goes on to explain that they’re not free from the consequences of their actions and have to reconcile with that, preferably before committing said action. So he can kill Will right then and there and have a nice quiet voyage to Tortuga, but he would be too shorthanded to actually make port.
True enough, they have the code, which is regarded and enforced as law. But that’s only because deviation from the code often has negative consequences compared to the inconvenience of adhering to it. Once everyone starts acting on their own, everything continues to degrade. Elizabeth kills Jack and as a consequence they need to get him back for the meeting of the pirate lords. Will conspires with the Singapore pirates to take control of the Pearl, while they are also conspiring with the East India Company to take the Pearl for themselves. As a consequence, the EIC has everyone at their mercy. It’s not until they return to the code and start negotiating with each other that they’re able to get on the same page and escape.
Then things get out of hand again at Shipwreck Cove until one man says to “hang the code,” for which he is immediately killed. Captain Teague, in his many years of experience, knows that it’s better to kill one of their own than have him start acting on his own and ultimately getting them all killed or inspiring others to do the same. Only by keeping to the code and electing a king to lead them in war were they able to claim victory.
So yes, their piracy is a claim to freedom. Yes, they still have a law. But the law is designed to keep them free.

It will be like the Holocaust, in that people will say "surely the Jews must have deserved it, the people who did it are too noble to have been acting out of pure hatred"

for day 2 of campfire fest! prompt: third eye (and i guess could also count for explosion, or a lack thereof lol) @outerwilds-events
#i meant to do something yesterday but i had a crazy shift at work and was feeling lazy lol#anyways. pye and idaea after the probe didn't work#this line of text is the first thing that comes to mind for 'third eye' for me bc its the only evidence/in-game mention of the nomai's -#- third eye being special/different from the other two in some way. im curious if it is actually composed differently and has better vision#or if it is just better for seeing fine details in things directly in front of them since it is forward-facing as opposed to -#- being on the sides of their head#also i just think about these two a lot. can you imagine being co-leaders of the most difficult and controversial part of a massive project#that is so important to so many people including your friends family members and ancestors who have died in search of what you are -#- going to potentially destroy your entire clan while attempting to find#you are building a weapon intended to destroy yourself and the entire star system you were born in#and your co-leader is the person with quite possibly the most opposite opinions and disposition to you#idaea having to grapple with the fact that the failure of something he never wanted to exist in the first place is still upsetting to him -#- because despite their differences he still sympathizes with pye who was so confident and wanted it to work so badly#and both of them as well as anyone else working at the sun station put so much time and energy into constructing it#and that work was so miserable due both to the heat and the tension due to their differing opinions and their own mixed feelings on it#pye having to admit defeat to everyone else working on the project who were so excited for this to finally give them the answer#in front of idaea who was so convinced that it was a bad idea and who she was probably desperate to prove wrong#in front of the entire crew of people who had spent probably months in miserable working conditions#after she had been so confident that it would work and so insistent that this was the only way#and she had to admit not only that it failed but that it couldn't possibly work. that deep down she knew and had probably known for a while#- that it would never work and had continued working on it anyway because she wanted it to work so bad#anyways. the fucking brainworms#tried out a new style for this and i really like how it turned out#outer wilds#outer wilds spoilers#outer wilds nomai#frostgnaw draws

I think the Pitt's biggest victory is having its entire group of main and supporting characters feel like real people you know and interact with. You don't get a lot of shows that have such depth in storytelling when saying so little at times with characters who all consistently behave like the complicated and layered people we all are.

I love how selfish spike is. his love isn't "unselfish" it's SO selfish
when he tries to be good it is always for an ulterior purpose. even if that purpose may not be evil, it's certainly not unselfish. you think he'd give a shit about dawn if she wasn't buffy's entire world? do you lot remember how quickly he dropped her when buffy started fucking him? even if we want to talk about the beginning of s6 that was out of guilt and obligation. and I'm not saying he didn't care about anyone else there because he definitely did, but he wouldn't have been there if not FOR buffy
he enjoys buffy happy because he does love her, yes, and her joy is a beautiful to him. but he likes her upset just as well too. he revels in buffy's suffering. he likes her hurt and he likes that she hurts him and he likes to hurt her. it's a language he understands, that he enjoys. he just likes her in whatever way will make her pay attention to him longer
I'll freely admit that he's emotionally supportive for her, which is something she needs desperately. but a lot of the times that's just when he himself isn't being someone who's actively deciding to tear her down. either way, as long as he's affecting her on some tangible level that makes him feel like he matters to her, he doesn't particularly care if it's for the better or the worse
I've just seen a lot of people call him unselfish and I don't agree. at all. probably ever. I don't know if this is a common fandom idea or if I've done that thing again where I've stumbled across a minority that I can't escape, but. just putting my opinion on it out there I suppose

I'm sure you know this but it might be nice to hear after that bizarre ask: I am not trans myself but I know SO many trans Jews, including converts and non-converts, who love being trans and love being Jewish and do not find any contradiction between those things! And many have written beautiful things about what it means to be trans and Jewish and how those things actually fit together and can enrich their personal understanding of God! And I think that person MIGHT have been asking in good faith but if you want to ask something in good faith you probably shouldn't include the bit where you tell them they're a mistake or that their conversion isn't valid :/
It reminds me of a quote that I learned a few years ago actually has roots in jewish philosophy:
"As my friend Julian puts it, only half winkingly: 'God blessed me by making me transsexual for the same reason God made wheat but not bread and fruit but not wine, so that humanity might share in the act of creation.'"
My jewish trans friends have been instrumental in helping me accept, understand, and embrace my transness, and this quote especially was meaningful to me when I first saw it. This is my view, but I think there is something beautiful about g-d intentionally leaving parts of us which must be cultivated and created by us. G-d leaves room for us to speak, He lets us rise to the occasion, lets us see what a beautiful universe it is that we live in. And that includes the act of creation that being trans is.

Why do I keep seeing people talking about I Saw The TV Glow saying things like “it will destroy your life” and “you shouldn’t watch it if you’re old, because then it’ll be too late.” Like my brother in christ, did we watch the same fucking movie??

The difference in tone between Emergence and the other two singles is so jarring when you listen to them back to back. On one second you're ascending to the 9th realm with Miss Gabi Rose's sax solo, on the other you're clutching your chest on the floor like a wounded animal of prey. Fun stuff.

this might just reveal things about my own personal taste, but I feel like mxtx is at her best when she's writing a relationship that is absolutely fucked. just a real psychosexual freakshow. the love was there and it made things worse. guys falling in love with the person whose demise they're supposed to be orchestrating. that sort of thing.

I’m not a Lawson fan by any means but it’s truly unfair and ridiculous if Red Bull really do take him out of the seat after two races. I’m a firm believer every driver should get a few races in a new car before anyone should consider kicking them out of it. It just smacks of professional incompetence on Red Bull’s part. How many young careers have they ruined now?

Halloween costume ideas I had for Stro Bro and his gray elephant-legged lump of a brother
With some of the stuff Strong Sad likes canonically, and some of the characters he's dressed as in the Halloween toons, you can't tell me he wouldn't be a fan of Peter Lorre films. So I drew him as Ugarte from Casablanca. It was hard finding the right balance between his and Lorre's facial features, but at least the color scheme didn't take too much effort to figure out.
The Strong Bad as Chucky art is actually one I made last year (ironically after Halloween had already ended, but I didn't wanna wait for the next Halloween to draw it by the time I thought it up). But I'm still pretty proud of it, so I figured I'd dig it back up and also post it here.
