mother’s day is coming up and the thing with mom is that anything she would materially want is out of everybody’s reasonable budget and also I don’t even know what fancy scarves she would even want and also in general she’s been wanting to cut down on clutter. also she might have plans with a friend this sunday anyway (lol). so what I’m doing is picking out a garden and being like hey. for the entire time we’re at this garden it will be all about you and taking pictures of you and taking the pictures you want no complaining whatsoever. whether that happens this sunday or whether you take a raincheck, that’s fine. she’s actually pretty receptive to it because everyone else in the family hates getting their photo taken lol
#my ramblings#in a surprising twist dad’s actually pretty easy to get gifts for#because all I have to do is find a concert#and I can also do that whenever and go like ‘hey this is your early/belated birthday/father’s day/whatever gift.’#I can think of. maybe a perfume mom likes? the specific scent and brand? but I’m not sure if she’d actually want it

HEART OF (24K) GOLD - JAKE'S FUTURE PATIENTS
; SYNOPSIS - jake’s had it easy his whole life. with a famous actor for a dad and his mom being the head nurse at a private clinic in the city, everything he wants gets handed to him on a silver platter - at least, until he meets you at a MUN conference. now, he’s forced to learn that money doesn’t buy everything, but he’s willing to do what it takes to be yours.
02z
➼ JAKE ! what do you get when you pair an iconic actor from the 80s and the top nurse at an expensive private clinic? jake - a spoiled, but not brat-like boy. anything he wants, he gets. naturally, he complains when things don't go his way; try to overlook that trait, and you'll find that he's got a heart of gold.
➼ JAY ! probably the most humble of the three. his family restaurant has many branches across the continent, of course making him a good cook. he often has to keep a metaphorical leash on jake, the role of being his babysitter weighing on his shoulders. someone please help him.
➼ SUNGHOON ! his family has a long history, coming into power back in the 1800s. him and jay actually grew up together, since his family had a share-hold in the restaurant business. for all that he calls jake annoying, they spend a lot of time together, both giving jay gray hairs at only 18.
➼ HEESEUNG ! like jake, he's planning to pursue a course in the medical field, what with his dad being the ceo of the country's leading pharmacy company. that being said, he likes to leech off jake's homework and class notes, since they're more coherent than whatever the hell mr. kim is spouting out his mouth.
➼ SUNOO ! no one actually knows why he's rich, not that it even matters. he likes to joke that he's paid by all of their parents to be their friend, which really wouldn't be that surprising. jake likes to think that even if that was the case, they've formed a true friendship.
➼ JUNGWON ! his father made a fortune starting from the ground up, first working in the oil industry before diversifying. nevertheless, jungwon was raised to count his blessings, and is pretty good at managing his own money (except when it comes to kpop albums). because of this, jay likes to use him as a good example for jake and the others.
➼ NI-KI ! his parents own a successful dance studio, which drove his passion for the art. he's actually gone viral for his cover dances and has ended up on several magazine covers, but never tells anyone his socials. jake's even joined some of his covers, and likes to spoil the younger boy with gifts.
— Y/NTAKHOZUHANING ; MASTERLIST ; ONE
; AUTHOR’S CORNER! i was tempted to exploit sunoo’s profile of being rich for unknown reasons and make a big plot that runs throughout the whole trilogy with a plot twist and he’s actually like a villain or something but then i was like mmmm idk if anyone would be interested in that 😭😭
; TAGLIST - paper rings tl . @yizhoutv @jiawji @ririlovesrenjun @ashiitex @filmofhybe h24kg tl . @yenqa @lilriswife4life @jlheon @luvswonyoung @mrchweeee @haechansbbg @miujunhui @s00buwu @articxari @rikisly send an ask or comment on the masterlist to be added .

Kavinsky’s relationship with Ronan is so interesting when looked at from Kavinsky’s POV.
Kavinsky was skulking about Monmouth for Ronan before he knew that Ronan was a dreamer, which meant that he had some interest in Ronan as a person (which we know doesn’t happen because the dream pack and his family are...dreams). Kavinsky then finds out that Ronan is like him. They’re the same. They’re dreamers and Kavinsky has never met another one in the world. He went from being alone to being one of two. His whole world changed again.
Kavinsky spends like a year trying to tease the confession out of Ronan. Ronan is really only interested in finding the bottom of a bottle with Kavinsky (and racing and fighting with him). Kavinsky is the window in which Ronan’s bird tries to fly into repeatedly and violently. We can assume Kavinsky was met with failure because The Dream Thieves happens.
Kavinsky flirts and he insults in the same breath because he is the instrument that Ronan loves to hurt himself on (and he’s not a stupid boy who can’t read the fucking room - Gansey has a literal collar for Ronan; K isn’t pulling Gansey’s Dog from his ass). But Kavinsky isn’t the only one with sharp, cutting edges and Ronan (intentionally and otherwise) hurts Kavinsky too.
So time passes and Ronan is the same as he’s always been and Kavinsky gets impatient and desperate. He dreams Ronan’s leather bracelets, punctured with teeth marks like the ones in reality, the details noted carefully and lovingly.
“I know you” is what the gift says. “I know you’re a dreamer and I know you chew your bracelets when you’re unhappy and I’ve been paying attention because I care. Look.” Kavinsky leaves.
The next time they see each other, Ronan tosses him a pair of sunglasses. The ones that Kavinsky wears regularly. This is the acknowledgment, the “I know you too.” Except the tint is off, the lenses are slightly wrong (and oh I bet that haunts Kavinsky later, this tiny sign that Ronan isn’t as into Kavinsky as Kavinsky is him). But still. The fact that the sunglasses exist says that Ronan is accepting the gift, he’s returning it, and he’s trying. Which is more than Kavinsky got out of him before.
Things happen fast after that.
Because they’ve always shared dreams and been aware that they were sharing when Ronan dreams of Kavinsky, I’m assuming that the first one - the sex dream - featured a real Kavinsky (although I don’t think Ronan knew). Kavinsky falls asleep and into a dream where he’s fucking Ronan against the hood of a car. This isn’t Kavinsky’s dream, either. It’s Ronan’s. Ronan who controls his dreams. To Kavinsky, this has to seem like a sign that Ronan is very into him.
They’re both dreamers. Kavinsky lives surrounded by dream people and dream objects...why couldn’t they take a dream relationship to reality with them?
Ronan crashes Gansey’s car because of the night horror and Kavinsky shows up to save his life. Ronan’s life is valuable. Except Ronan isn’t grateful, he’s freaking out for no reason over the car. And there’s a moment where Kavinsky literally does not understand what the big deal is; Ronan can just dream a new one. It’s easy. He mentions that Ronan might have a head injury because he doesn’t know that Ronan doesn’t know Kavinsky is a dreamer.
But Kavinsky is going to take care of this and his stupid idiot boyfriend (what else would Ronan be? They courted, they fucked, dreams are reality). Kavinsky flirts on the drive over and Ronan sulks and Kavinsky says in words what he’s been saying in actions; I know what you are, you’re just like me.
Kavinsky is no ones dog. He doesn’t have a Gansey to distract him from his life. He lives with reminders of how bad life is and he’s an addict in a downward spiral. So the process of dreaming is something Kavinsky has had ample time and privacy to streamline.
Ronan doesn’t make cars because he’s keeping himself secret. By showing him the cars and that it’s even possible, Kavinsky says, “we don’t have to be a secret. You don’t have to limit and twist yourself into a tiny box. The world is literally ours.”
I’m not sure how they went from ‘let’s dream a new car’ to ‘let’s get drunk’ and can only assume that it was old habit to drink in each other’s presence but there’s a time skip where we next hear from them via Gansey. More specifically, via Kavinsky being at once jealous over Gansey (probably) being in a relationship with Ronan and where he both reassures Gansey and rips off the bandaid about the car. Kavinsky sends Gansey a dick pic with an Irish flag tied to his erection, a roundabout way of saying that Ronan’s already ridden his dick.
Kavinsky takes Ronan home after the field, they (or at least Ronan) drink alcohol and Kavinsky puts on a racing movie. Kavinsky texts Gansey his dick pick and the news about the car, and he’s not even next to Ronan. He’s giving Ronan space. I’d say the phone thing was invading Ronan’s privacy but Ronan doesn’t use his phone so...there’s nothing there to invade. When Ronan wakes up, Kavinsky tries to start a conversation. And it’s a pretty normal conversation; you handle your liquor well, oh hey you aren’t responding are you okay, wait you inherited dreaming from your dad?
Ronan leaves the room. He’s not very talkative. This probably isn’t going how Kavinsky imagined it would. Again, Kavinsky is an addict and his boyfriend is being more prickly than usual so he gets high. Kavinsky makes a joke instead of confessing to texting Gansey what was basically a “he wants me more than you” text. And Ronan responds with violence. Which Kavinsky points out and his only option is to lay his cards on the table. Kavinsky doesn’t want to play chase, he wants this thing between them to settle. So he spills that he saw Ronan dream the blood and he knew.
And all Ronan asks is how he did it. His hackles have finally soothed. Kavinsky almost literally jumps on the chance to teach Ronan and spend more time in his company; the company of someone like him in all the ways that matter.
There’s more beer to entice Ronan to stay, a little extra incentive to spend time with Kavinsky. Ronan’s first attempts aren’t interesting for someone who’s house is full of one trick magical dream items. Like I said above, Kavinsky has the dreaming process streamlined. He takes his pill, he gets what he wants from his dream and he dies for this. His heart stops for a few seconds. We don’t know if Kavinsky takes the pills to dream every time or if it’s just to make this fast and easy for Ronan’s training. If he does it’s because he’s suicidal, and if he doesn’t then it’s because he’s at the point that he’ll die for Ronan.
What does Kavinsky bring back? Something boring, like Ronan’s dream thing, but it’s complimentary. The cap to Ronan’s pen, the missing piece, that fits and matches perfectly. Which is what Kavinsky thinks they are to each other.
Kavinsky gets his jealous dig in about Gansey’s relationship with Ronan, which makes Ronan almost leave. This time, when Ronan tells Kavinsky to back off about Gansey, Kavinsky does. Because he wants Ronan to stay and he knows Ronan has a temper. Back to the safe stuff, to training, and this time when they dream together it’s intentional.
And when they get back? Ronan is still and he doesn’t react when Kavinsky touches him but he does open his hand when asked what he has. He laughs at Kavinsky’s joke, which doesn’t insult Gansey or insinuate that they’re in a relationship. Ronan laughs, a good sign, the best sign, and Kavinsky flirts. They open up a little, the first time that Ronan has shown any interest in Kavinsky’s home life, and then it’s back to dreaming together.
When Ronan dreams back a lit bomb, Kavinsky saves their lives by throwing it out the window before it explodes. They talk civilly and Kavinsky offers Ronan some cocaine; both to help him dream and because people who do cocaine just like to share with their friends and romantic partners (not diving deeper into this but trust me, it’s a thing).
They’re together so long that days have gone by. This is the first time that they aren’t fighting and antagonizing each other. It’s just dreams and each other. There’s still beer and cocaine because they’re addicts who are hurting, but they’re both comfortable with it. Ronan gifts Kavinsky with a twizzler, which Kavinsky takes because he loves Ronan.
Kavinsky thinks Ronan’s ready for the Camaro but gets angry when he realizes Ronan still doesn’t get how to dream. Ronan gets angry too, takes his failure out on Kavinsky because he just doesn’t get it. And Kavinsky points out how he’s been practicing.
So two things happen next. Ronan says he can’t go back without the car, to which Kavinsky replies to the effect of “then don’t.” He’s asking Ronan to stay with him. And Ronan replies that he’s going to try again, he’s going to dream with Kavinsky again, he’s staying. And that’s all that Kavinsky hears, he doesn’t realize that Ronan meant he was getting the car back so that he could leave.
A new pill comes out, one that keeps Ronan in his body but kicks his mind out. This is a pill that Kavinsky has tested before (once resulting in a girl overdosing) but now he’s got it perfected; this isn’t supposed to hurt Ronan. And Kavinsky re-enacts their first shared dream; Ronan against the hood, Kavinsky pressed up behind him, tracing the tattoo. They’ve already been here before.
But Ronan is gone, back to dreams, and when he comes to, he’s done it. He’s brought back the Camaro and it is perfect. Ronan’s success is Kavinsky’s success (which I’m sure he attributes to his magic dick and phenomenal teaching skills). They are perfect. This is a perfect moment for Kavinsky, a shining moment.
And Ronan crushes it immediately by telling him that actually he’s going back to Gansey; that he wasn’t going to stay. Kavinsky is so surprised that he stands in blank shock. Whatever defensive shields he has slam into place, a wall between himself and his boyfriend who refuses to stay. He can’t believe it.
Ronan mocks Kavinsky for thinking that they’d stay together and that this strengthened anything between them. But Kavinsky still tries to change Ronan’s mind by telling him he doesn’t need Gansey. And then Ronan breaks up with him. Ronan basically says that Kavinsky was nothing at all and he didn’t care about him.
Kavinsky is heartbroken. He says he’ll burn Ronan. He’s a jilted lover, spurned and ashamed and hurt. Ronan is leaving him. Kavinsky puts his finger gun to Ronan’s temple - one last touch - and says he’ll see Ronan later. The exact verbiage is “in the streets”, which might be a joke from Maggie about how they’re no longer seeing each other in the sheets.
But he doesn’t burn Ronan right away. He dreams him a car and lets Ronan know that he’s still jealous over Gansey.
The car gets no reaction and Kavinsky escalates in his attempts to Ronan’s attention. I don’t know how Kavinsky convinces himself that kidnapping Matthew was a good idea. But I want to know if it was before or after he realized that Matthew is a dream thing. When Kavinsky kidnaps Matthew? I bet he didn’t even have to resort to force. Just “hey kid, I’m Ronan’s friend, wanna get a milkshake?”
And he’d take Matthew to get a milkshake and sit in the booth opposite him and drill him with questions. And come to realize that Ronan dreamed him. Now that Kavinsky is actually looking at Matthew, he sees the signs of a dream thing; knows Ronan’s dreams intimately enough to recognize his handiwork. Kavinsky lives with dream things that are so real that no one can tell the difference. And Ronan did a really shitty job making Matthew. The kid has zero personality. He’s essentially a mirror: if K mentions he likes something then Matthew starts talking about it and he copies body language and speech patterns. He wasn’t just made to like people, he was made to be liked. (This was based off the snippet of CDH that was released and I don’t know if later installments negate any of this).
So if Kavinsky hands him a pill and says “swallow this” then Matthew does it and that’s how Kavinsky gets him into the trunk. He literally just asked. It’s that easy because Matthew was made by a child who had extremely base desires...who is very bad at realism.
Kavinsky sends Ronan texts from both his own phone and Matthew’s phone. This is what got Ronan’s attention; he calls. He’s never called Kavinsky before in his life, has never even texted him back before. So this is huge.
It’s important to note here than Kavinsky has replaced real life people with dreams and that he has to practice to get good at making something(one). People are replaceable. Dreams even more so. Matthew is barely a person, he’s a bad creation, and he’s replaceable. This is the key factor; Mathew can be redreamed. If something happens to this Matthew - like an explosion, say - then Ronan can always dream a new, better one. Kavinsky can help him. The point being that this is not actually a high stakes move for Kavinsky. This is breaking Ronan’s toy with the intent of gaining Ronan‘a attention and promising to buy him a new one (a better one, even).
When Ronan threatens Kavinsky on the phone, it’s nothing. Ronan has threatened violence before and it’s only fair for Ronan to make the same threats Kavinsky did. The important, takeaway is that Ronan is coming to see Kavinsky.
At the Fourth of July party, Kavinsky makes an entrance. He wants Ronan to see that he’s fine without him, better in fact.
But Ronan brought Gansey. And Kavinsky cannot resist a jab at Gansey, whom he feels stole his other half. He tells Gansey that he hopes Ronan can’t get it up for him. Ronan attacks him, demanding his dream brother back.
Kavinsky says he doesn’t know. This may or may not be a lie. Kavinsky brings up their relationship again, because that’s what this is about. He says, again, “I can’t believe you left me.” When this doesn’t get through to Ronan, Kavinsky asks Ronan to dream with him.
Ronan does.
Kavinsky is being attacked but Ronan came. He flirts, using a line he’s used before.
And it doesn’t work.
Kavinsky is being attacked by the forest and he tells Ronan that sometimes you have to take what you want; asking again if Ronan wants him, telling him that Ronan doesn’t need to ask before he takes Kavinsky. Again, he bears his heart to Ronan. He’s saying that Ronan is all he has because Ronan is so irreversibly tied to dreaming, dreaming is the only thing there is. Kavinsky says that if Ronan stays in the relationship, they’ll have each other.
Ronan tells him that it’s not enough, that Kavinsky is not enough. Here, Kavinsky begs that it’s not because of Gansey, that Gansey isn’t better than him. And then it comes out that Ronan would rather have a straight man than Kavinsky. A straight man who isn’t a dreamer.
Ronan says that there’s more to life and Kavinsky says that it isn’t true. Ronan says cars, sex, and drugs but he’s also talking about dreaming and that’s how Kavinsky takes it. Everything and a large portion of the people in Kavinsky’s life are dreams. He has no reason to think he won’t be continually replacing people and objects with dream copies. This is his whole life, it’s all he has, he’s made it from nothing. And this is when Kavinsky realizes that Ronan really doesn’t feel the same and isn’t going to return his feelings.
Kavinsky loses the will to live because he’d hinged everything on Ronan. Without Ronan, Kavinsky didn’t want to live. The last little thing he had in his life that was an equal, snuffed out Kavinsky’s flame. So Kavinsky summons a creature that’s essentially his heartbreak; not just this one but every heartbreak and all of his self loathing. This creature hates Kavinsky as much as it hates the rest of the world because it’s Kavinsky’s feelings manifested.
Kavinsky has escalated again. Now he’s threatening to kill himself. He looks Ronan in the eye and asks Ronan to stop him.
Ronan brings back an albino night horror. It fights with Kavinsky’s fire dragon and both boys just watch it. This is so interesting because Ronan’s only reaction is to tell Kavinsky to stop feeling. Stop having feelings for me. Kavinsky says that he can’t. Again, the dragon and the night horror are manifestations of Kavinsky and Ronan’s feelings; they’re metaphors come to life.
Ronan is still focused on his brother, though. Kavinsky even tells him that he’s missing the point of all this, which was to sort through their feelings (or fight through them like the dragon and horror were doing). Ronan finds Matthew, mildly drugged but fine and about to free himself anyway. And Kavinsky finally sees that Ronan really doesn’t care. So he stays in the path of their monstrous, overwhelming feelings made real and ignores Ronan’s pleas for him to get down because he knows Ronan will say whatever he needs to get Kavinsky to do what he wants.
And Kavinsky dies in flame, death via broken heart.

could you do Fallout New Vegas companion’s reactions to a Courier Six who is also the Lone Wanderer telling their stories from their time in DC? (bonus points for Arcade’s reaction to them hating the enclave, and if that would make him decide to keep his past hidden even longer, or if he would still tell them?)
The logistics and implications of this make my head spin. This is also super long, honestly I should just quit writing reacts and start writing fics OH WAIT
Getting the courier talking was a tough thing to do, but on nights where the moon was full and the coyotes' howls were miles away or at least behind some stout walls, on nights where they were a few beers in and they hadn't seen another living soul in a few days, that Mojave Express deliverer started to reminisce. That wasn't really the surprising part, though. No, the surprising part was what they would remember, fondly or not-so-fondly: A world apart from the desert, a continent away on another coast, and stories of life in a vault, a missing father, pure water and a Brotherhood divided.
Arcade Gannon: Arcade didn't mind these moods, at least when they first cropped up. He nodded along as the courier talked about living in their father's shadow, about feeling cornered by their own family's legacy. He hung on their words about living in the cradle of America's history, about Project Purity, all of the gritty details of modifying a GECK to bring water to a devastated wasteland.
Eventually though, the courier's memories soured, with the arrival of Enclave remnants in their life. Arcade folded into himself with every harsh word, every jolt of plasma that had disrupted his friend's world relived in horrific detail. They gestured angrily as they described their newfound purpose, their battle for power with the fractured Brotherhood of Steel at their back, and their smug satisfaction at the moments they were able to crack open Raven Rock and the Enclave's mobile base crawler and lay waste to their tormentors.
It took a few rounds of these stories before the courier noticed he shrank and grew quiet whenever they neared the end of their story about breaking into another vault to find the GECK. They stopped abruptly one night. "What's up with you?"
"Um..." Arcade scratched the back of his neck and looked away. "Nothing. Nothing, I just... have some personal experience with the Enclave, myself."
The courier sighed. "Yeah, there's a few people walking around the West Coast that have similar stories to mine. Arroyo's full of them, for one. Is it something like that?"
Arcade took a deep breath. "I feel... well, it's a lot closer to home, for me. Close enough to raise questions, so I don't talk about it much."
"Close enough to..." The courier twisted their face up in confusion for a moment, before realization set in and their eyes grew large. "You were... your... oh."
"Mmm-hm."
"Well, fuck me." The courier smiled and popped a cap off of another beer. "I've been doing all the talking, haven't I? Let's hear your story about working with the guys in power armor who ruined my life, right after dad did."
Craig Boone: Whenever the courier started up like this, Boone couldn't help but notice a familiar twinge of regret and self-doubt in their voice. It shone through most clearly when they spoke about their time with the Brotherhood of Steel, the men and women they'd fought alongside and lost during their struggle against the remnants of the Enclave. It was there, too, in their story about returning to the vault they grew up in, setting the chaos that had arisen in their wake to rest, but not being able to go back to the way things were.
Boone didn't pry. He knew that feeling well. Instead, he cracked open bottles of beer, liquor, soda, whatever they had on hand during their nights in the desert, and just listened. He'd done the same for Carla, when they were younger and new to each other and he couldn't get enough of her voice and how it flowed endlessly, easily, the way his never could. He absorbed it all now as he did then: The joy, the pain, the loss, the fear, the triumphs and falls and abandoned dreams that filled the courier up and drove them to travel west, beyond anything they had ever known.
That last part stumped Boone a bit, though. "Why didn't you stay?" he finally asked one night.
They looked surprised. "Stay? Stay where? I didn't have a home anymore."
Boone shook his head. "With the Brotherhood. Or some other settlement."
"Like Megaton?" The courier sighed. "I thought about it. Close to the vault, friendly people, easy work... I guess I just didn't want to wind up... stuck."
They flushed red and looked away from him. Boone knew why they were embarrassed, but he also knew the truth in their words.
Sometimes the courier cried after they had finished, though they did their best to hide it. Boone pretended not to notice. He was pretty sure they knew he was pretending, but he was also pretty sure that pointing it out would be worse than just letting it be an open secret between them. The silence between them endured, but something grew inside it and flourished. Some kind of deeper understanding.
Lily Bowen: The more the courier spoke, the more Lily made connections in her muddled mind. Of course they knew the basic layout of most vaults, they had grown up in one. Of course they were extra-sensitive to the Mojave heat, they had come to the desert from the cooler of the two coasts. Of course they'd been extra-wary around the super mutants or nightkin of Jacobstown, they had only known angry super mutants looking to grow their own numbers through any means necessary.
Their shared experience of growing up inside a vault reminded Lily of happier days, and she often asked questions about Vault 101 during the courier's stories. "Were you sweet on anyone inside your old home?" she asked, with a big smile befitting a proud grandma.
The courier blushed. "That's not very polite, Lily."
"Oh, I'm sorry, dearie."
"No, no it's okay." The courier smiled. "There was a boy who picked on me a lot, but I never figured out whether he did it because he hated me or liked me. His name was Butch. And there was Amata, my childhood friend. She was the daughter of the Overseer."
"Daughter of the Overseer?" Lily grinned. "I'm sure she was a lovely young woman."
The courier looked a little misty. "Yeah. She was. Probably still is."
Lily pulled a handkerchief that used to be a small tablecloth from inside her overalls and handed it over. "Maybe we can go back there together, pumpkin," she offered. "I always wanted to travel to the capital. We can visit your friends, see the sights."
"Yeah, maybe someday." The courier accepted the gift and blew their nose. "I've got some things I need to finish up here before I even think about wandering back east, though."
"Then let's make a list and do our chores," Lily said happily. "Number one?"
"Ohhhh, man." The courier smiled up at her. "I wouldn't even know where to start."
Raul Alfonso Tejada: Raul got a faint smile on his face whenever the courier started up like this, as if their memories reminded him of another place he had come from, another time. While they couldn't have more different backgrounds, pasts- hell, he had several hundred years on the courier, even if they shared the same road today- there was something in the description of the other roads they had walked that made him feel warm on a cold night.
"What's on your mind?" The courier asked him one night, when Raul's smile grew larger than usual.
"Nada, boss," he reassured them. "You're just a good reminder that I can change my mind about the future anytime I'd like. Tell me the one about that radio DJ again."
"Again?" The courier rolled their eyes. "Why? I could tell you a million stories about Underworld and all the ghouls that lived there, but all you want to hear about is Three Dog. You'd probably have more in common with the Underworld folks, honestly."
Raul nodded noncommittally. "Sí, but my favorite stories are about people who had to rise above bad situations and become someone uncommon. Anyone who's able to do that is either fighting for something great or running from something terrible. Sometimes both."
The courier shot him a skeptical look. "Three Dog's holed up in his radio station 24/7, he's not running from anything or out fighting for anything. All that stuff about 'the good fight' is a load of bull."
"Now, now, Six," Raul chastised. "Just because he looks like your average pendejo doesn't mean he isn't doing his part. You even told me his radio show is inspirational for the Capital Wasteland folks."
The courier held their hands up in the air and bobbled them, as if balancing an invisible scale. "The duality of man. Being an average pendejo, or convincing everyone around you that you aren't actually an average pendejo and can pull off miracles."
Raul laughed. "And which one are you, boss?"
"Eh, I'm still figuring it out."
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: Cass was never one for fixating on her own past, but she couldn't help but sympathize with the courier whenever they deigned to add onto their unbelievable story. It was hard enough for her to navigate her own damn life: She couldn't imagine being called upon to steer an entire area's destiny.
After another night of recalling their life inside a vault with their dad, then their unexpected loss of him right after being reunited on the surface, the courier stopped suddenly. "I'm sorry," they said.
Cass paused her swig of precious whiskey. "What?"
"I keep going on and on about my dad, and here you are not knowing what happened to yours."
"Eh." Cass took her drink and waved her hand around until the burning swallow made its way down. "S'loads of people in the wasteland without a clue what happened to their pops. I'm not special. In fact, I'd say it probably hurts a bit more, what happened with yours."
"Well, all the same." The courier sank deeper into their seat and examined their own bottle of spirits. "I feel like an open book, tonight. Anything you want to know about where I came from that I haven't already spilled?"
Cass thought for a moment. "Tribals."
"What about them?"
"Does the East Coast have them? You're not the first traveler I've met from there, but none of you have so much as mentioned any tribals out east."
"Mmm." The courier looked thoughtful. "I guess we do have them, though maybe not in the traditional sense. There's a mess of them in Point Lookout for sure, and at least one tribal group in the Capital Wasteland outright, but beyond that things are more... loose. Fewer intact families, fewer intact homes."
"Huh." Cass took another drink. "Maybe that's where my dad went."
She let the courier stew in the awkward silence for a bit before she grinned and reached out to smack them. "Just kidding. Keep going. I want to hear about that giant robot again."
Veronica Santangelo: Veronica usually sat and listened, spellbound, picturing a chapter of her order that had realized the very thing she kept trying to tell the Elders and made the ultimate sacrifice to follow their hearts anyway.
Well, maybe Elder Owyn Lyons hadn't come to the same realization as her, but he had had a change of heart that split his company and cut them off from almost everyone they had ever known. It had been five years since the High Elders had instituted radio silence toward their East Coast chapter, and so far there had been no attempts to re-establish contact.
Veronica prodded the courier for any info she could get about the Capital Wasteland Brotherhood of Steel. The courier let slip pretty early in their friendship that Elder Owyn Lyons had passed away, which wasn't unexpected. The man was 76 years old, after all. She learned on one particularly emotional night that his daughter, Elder Sarah Lyons, was also dead, something she wasn't sure even the Western Elders were aware of. That memory was clearly painful for the courier though, so Veronica didn't press for details.
"And the Enclave?" the Scribe asked one night, arms wrapped around her knees. "Are they completely gone?"
The courier grew cold. "Yes. I made sure of it."
"Right." Veronica nodded. "So the Brotherhood took over the air force base they were at. It must have been chock-full of tech and resources, if it was the Enclave's last stand."
"It was." The courier sighed and shifted in their seat. "And it woke up some of our brothers and sisters to their original mission in the Capital Wasteland. I thought maybe that selfishness had died with Liberty Prime, but... well, I didn't like it, so I left."
"Mmm, yeah." Veronica nodded again, sympathetically this time. "I know how you feel. Felt."
"Feel," the courier agreed. "I just wish there was more I could've done. Maybe there wasn't anything else, short of seizing power."
"You'd definitely get pushback for that in the Brotherhood," Veronica agreed. "But you might get that chance out here in the broader Mojave."
ED-E: At first, ED-E enjoyed the stories, trumpeting and cooing various beeps at the appropriate moments for emphasis. The one time the courier began badmouthing the Enclave, however, the eyebot waited until they had finished before playing back the first tape that Dr. Whitley had recorded before its trip.
The courier listened to the scientist's words from years ago, deflating slightly as it played out. When the tape had finished, they stood up and checked the eyebot over. "He sent you toward Navarro, huh?"
ED-E beeped affirmation, and the courier sighed. "But Navarro was already gone. I'm sorry. I guess I'm... well, me and the Brotherhood of Steel back east are responsible for your previous master's decision to send you away. Might be responsible for more, too."
ED-E beeped sadly. The courier pressed their forehead against the eyebot's metal dome in apology.
Rex: Well, surprising for most. Rex was not most. As soon as the courier got really into their recollections, Rex usually yawned and went to sleep. He stirred when he felt their hand reach down to scratch the ruff of his neck, or pat the glass dome that held his brain.
"Good dog," the courier said, through the veil of sleep. "You remind me of another pup that used to follow me around."

Circe by Madeline Miller: a review
As you might have noticed, a few of my most recent posts were more or less a liveblog of Madeline Miller’s novel Circe. However, as they hardly exhausted the subject, a proper review is also in order. You can find it under the “read more” button. All sorts of content warnings apply because this book takes a number of turns one in theory can expect from Greek mythology but which I’d hardly expect to come up in relation to Circe. I should note that this is my first contact with this author’s work. I am not familiar with Miller’s more famous, earlier novel Song of Achilles - I am not much of an Iliad aficionado, truth to be told. I read the poem itself when my literature class required it, but it left no strong impact on me, unlike, say, the Epic of Gilgamesh or, to stay within the theme of Greek mythology, Homeric Hymn to Demeter, works which I read at a similar point in my life on my own accord.
What motivated me to pick up this novel was the slim possibility that for once I’ll see my two favorite Greek gods in fiction, these being Hecate and Helios (in case you’re curious: #3 is Cybele but I suspect that unless some brave soul will attempt to adapt Nonnus’ Dionysiaca, she’ll forever be stuck with no popcultural presence outside Shin Megami Tensei). After all, it seemed reasonable to expect that Circe’s father will be involved considering their relationship, while rarely discussed in classical sources, seems remarkably close. Hesiod’s Catalogue of Women and Apollonius’ Argonautica describe Circe arriving on her island in her father’s solar chariot, while Ptolemy Hephaestion (as quoted by Photius) notes that Helios protected her home during the Gigantomachy. Helios, for all intents and purposes, seems like a decent dad (and, in Medea’s case, grandpa) in the source material even though his most notable children (and granddaughter) are pretty much all cackling sorcerers, not celebrated heroes. How does Miller’s Helios fare, compared to his mythical self? Not great, to put it lightly, as you’ll see later. As for Hecate… she’s not even in the book. Let me preface the core of the review by saying I don’t think reinterpreting myths, changing relations between figures, etc. is necessarily bad - ancient authors did it all the time, and modern adaptations will inevitably do so too, both to maintain internal coherence and perhaps to adjust the stories to a modern audience, much like ancient authors already did. I simply don’t think this book is successful at that. The purpose of the novel is ostensibly to elevate Circe above the status of a one-dimensional minor antagonist - but to accomplish this, the author mostly demonizes her family and a variety of other figures, so the net result is that there are more one dimensional female villains, not less. I expected the opposite, frankly. The initial section of the novel focuses on Circe’s relationship with her family, chiefly with her father. That’s largely uncharted territory in the source material - to my knowledge no ancient author seemed particularly interested in covering this period in her life. Blank pages of this sort are definitely worth filling. To begin with, Helios is characterized as abusive, neglectful and power-hungry. And also, for some reason, as Zeus’ main titan ally in the Titanomachy - a role which Hesiod attributes to Hecate… To be fair I do not think it’s Hesiod who serves as the primary inspiration here, as it’s hard to see any traces of his account - in which Zeus wins in no small part because he promises the lesser titans higher positions that they had under Cronus - in Miller’s version of events. Only Helios and Oceanus keep their share, and are presented as Zeus’ only titan allies (there’s a small plot hole as Selene appears in the novel and evidently still is the moon…) - contrary to just about any portrayal of the conflict, in which many titans actually side with Zeus and his siblings. Also, worth noting that in Hesiod’s version it’s not Oceanus himself who cements the pact with Zeus, it’s his daughter Styx - yes, -that- Styx. Missed opportunity to put more focus on female mythical figures - first of many in this work, despite many reviews praising it as “feminist.” Of course, it’s not all about Helios. We are quickly introduced to a variety of female characters as well (though, as I noted above, none of these traditionally connected to the Titanomachy despite it being a prominent aspect of the book’s background). They are all somewhat repetitive - to the point of being basically interchangeable. Circe’s mother is vain and cruel; so is Scylla. And Pasiphae. There’s no real indication of any hostility between Circe and any of her siblings in classical sources, as far as I am aware, but here it’s a central theme. The subplots pertaining to it bear an uncanny resemblance to these young adult novels in which the heroine, who is Not Like Other Girls, confronts the Chads and Stacies of the world, and I can’t shake off the feelings that it’s exactly what it is, though with superficial mythical flourish on top. I should note that Pasiphae gets a focus arc of sorts - which to my surprise somehow manages to be more sexist than the primary sources. A pretty famous tidbit repeated by many ancient authors is that Pasiphae cursed her husband Minos, regarded as unfaithful, to kill anyone else he’d have sex with with his… well, bodily fluids. Here she does it entirely because she’s a debased sadist and not because unfaithfulness is something one can be justifiably mad about. You’d think it would be easy to put a sympathetic spin on this. But the book manages to top that in the very same chapter - can’t have Pasiphae without the Minotaur (sadly - I think virtually everything else about Pasiphae and Minos is more fun than that myth but alas) so in a brand new twist on this myth we learn that actually the infamous affair wasn’t a curse placed on Pasiphae by Poseidon or Aphrodite because of some transgression committed by Minos. She’s just wretched like that by nature. I’m frankly speechless, especially taking into account the book often goes out of its way to present deities in the worst light possible otherwise, and which as I noted reviews praise for its feminist approach - I’m not exactly sure if treating Pasiphae worse than Greek and Roman authors did counts as that. I should note this is not the only instance of… weirdly enthusiastic references to carnal relations between gods and cattle in this book, as there’s also a weird offhand mention of Helios being the father of his own cows. This, as far as I can tell, is not present in any classical sources and truth to be told I am not a huge fan of this invention. I won’t try to think about the reason behind this addition to maintain my sanity. Pasiphae aside - the author expands on the vague backstory Circe has in classical texts which I’ve mentioned earlier. You’d expect that her island would be a gift from her father - after all many ancient sources state that he provided his children and grandchildren with extravagant gifts. However, since Helios bears little resemblance to his mythical self, Aeaea is instead a place of exile here, since Helios hates Circe and Zeus is afraid of witchcraft and demands such a solution (the same Zeus who, according to Hesiod, holds Hecate in high esteem and who appeared with her on coins reasonably commonly… but hey, licentia poetica, this idea isn’t necessarily bad in itself). Witchcraft is presented as an art exclusive to Helios’ children here - Hecate is nowhere to be found, it’s basically as if her every role in Greek mythology was surgically removed. A bit of a downer, especially since at least one text - I think Ovid’s Metarphoses? - Circe directly invokes Hecate during her confrontation with king Picus (Surprisingly absent here despite being a much more fitting antagonist for Circe than many of the characters presented as her adversaries in this novel…) Of course, we also learn about the origin of Circe’s signature spell according to ancient sources, changing people into animals. It actually takes the novel a longer while to get there, and the invented backstory boils down to Circe getting raped. Despite ancient Greek authors being rather keen on rape as plot device, to my knowledge this was never a part of any myth about Circe. Rather odd decision to put it lightly but I suppose at least there was no cattle involved this time, perhaps two times was enough for the author. Still, I can’t help but feel like much like many other ideas present in this book it seems a bit like the author’s intent is less elevating the Circe above the role of a one note witch antagonist, but rather punishing her for being that. The fact she keeps self loathing about her origin and about not being human doesn’t exactly help to shake off this feeling. This impression that the author isn’t really fond of Circe being a wacky witch only grows stronger when Odysseus enters the scene. There was already a bit of a problem before with Circe’s life revolving around love interests before - somewhat random ones at that (Dedalus during the Pasiphae arc and Hermes on and off - not sure what the inspiration for either of these was) - but it was less noticeable since it was ultimately in the background and the focus was the conflict between Circe and Helios, Pasiphae, etc. In the case of Odysseus it’s much more notable because these subplots cease to appear for a while. As a result of meeting him, Circe decides she wants to experience the joys of motherhood, which long story short eventually leads to the birth of Telegonus, who does exactly what he was famous for. The final arcs have a variety of truly baffling plot twists which didn’t really appeal to me, but which I suppose at least show a degree of creativity - better than just turning Helios’ attitude towards his children upside down for sure. Circe ends up consulting an oc character who I can only describe as “stingray Cthulhu.” His presence doesn’t really add much, and frankly it feels like yet another wasted opportunity to use Hecate, but I digress. Oh, also in another twist Athena is recast as the villain of the Odyssey. Eventually Circe gets to meet Odysseus’ family, for once interacts with another female character on positive terms (with Penelope, to be specific) and… gets together with Telemachus, which to be fair is something present in many ancient works but which feels weird here since there was a pretty long passage about Odysseus describing him as a child to Circe. I think I could live without it. Honestly having her get together with Penelope would feel considerably less weird, but there are no lesbians in the world of this novel. It would appear that the praise for Song of Achilles is connected to the portrayal of gay relationships in it. Can’t say that this applies to Circe - on this front we have an offhand mention of Hyacinth's death. which seems to serve no real purpose other than establishing otherwise irrelevant wind god is evil, and what feels like an advert for Song of Achilles courtesy of Odysseus, which takes less than one page. Eventually Circe opts to become mortal to live with Telemachus and denounces her father and… that’s it. This concludes the story of Circe. I don’t exactly think the original is the deepest or greatest character in classical literature, but I must admit I’d rather read about her wacky witch adventures than about Miller’s Circe. A few small notes I couldn’t fit elsewhere: something very minor that bothered me a lot but that to be honest I don’t think most readers will notice is the extremely chaotic approach to occasional references to the world outside Greece - Sumer is randomly mentioned… chronologically after Babylon and Assyria, and in relation to Persians (or rather - to Perses living among them). At the time we can speak of “Persians” Sumerian was a dead language at best understood by a few literati in the former great cities of Mesopotamia so this is about the same as if a novel about Mesopotamia mentioned Macedonians and then completely randomly Minoans at a chronologically later point. Miller additionally either confused or conflated Perses, son of Perseus, who was viewed positively and associated with Persia (so positively that Xerxes purportedly tried to use it for propaganda purposes!) with Perses the obscure brother of Circe et. al, who is a villain in an equally obscure myth casting Medea as the heroine, in which he rules over “Tauric Chersonese,” the Greek name of a part of Crimea. I am honestly uncertain why was he even there as he amounts to nothing in the book, and there are more prominent minor children of Helios who get no mention (like Aix or Phaeton) so it’s hard to argue it was for the sake of completion. Medea evidently doesn’t triumph over him offscreen which is his sole mythical purpose. Is there something I liked? Well, I’m pretty happy Selene only spoke twice, considering it’s in all due likeness all that spared her from the fate of receiving similarly “amazing” new characterization as her brother. As is, she was… okay. Overall I am definitely not a fan of the book. As for its purported ideological value? It certainly has a female main character. Said character sure does have many experiences which are associated with women. However, I can’t help but think that the novel isn’t exactly feminist - it certainly focuses on Circe, but does it really try to “rehabilitate” her? And is it really “rehabilitation” and feminist reinterpretation when almost every single female character in the book is the same, and arguably depicted with even less compassion than in the source material? It instead felt like the author’s goal is take away any joy and grandeur present in myths, and to deprive Circe of most of what actually makes her Circe. We don’t need to make myths joyless to make them fit for a new era. It’s okay for female characters to be wacky one off villains and there’s no need to punish them for it. A book which celebrates Circe for who she actually is in the Odyssey and in other Greek sources - an unapologetic and honestly pretty funny character - would feel much more feminist to me that a book where she is a wacky witch not because she feels like it but because she got raped, if you ask me.

Baseless Ferengi headcanons no one asked for and that get increasingly queer-navel-gazing and self indulgent because the horrible space goblins have consumed my brain:
- Mobile ears, because if hearing is so well developed and important to them they should be able to aim those big stupid radar dishes. Also because then they can emote with them and that's cute. THE AESTHETIC IS PARAMOUNT.
- Since they canonically sharpen their teeth with chew sticks and sharpeners, their teeth must grow continuously. So I submit: subcultures that let certain teeth grow out as a fashion/political statement. Ferengi punks and anarchists with 5" tusks. Ferengi with all their teeth filed flat (mom and dad HATE it).
- Corollary to the above, most of their teeth are crooked. At the least, they don't share our fetish for straight teeth. What if their teeth are deciduous, and there's no point in trying to force them into perfect alignment, since they'll just fall out and get replaced? So like, sharks but their teeth can also grow longer with no limit. WHAT HAST EVOLUTION WROUGHT ON FERENGINAR :V
- Parents nagging their kids to sharpen their teeth "or they'll grow up into your brain and you'll die :)"
- Personal space? Don't know her.
Okay I need a cut because there's too many now. WHOLE SOCIETY OF GAY HOMOPHOBIC UNCLES AND AUNTS GO I HAVE A PROBLEM
- I can't remember who on here put forth the idea of them having retractable claws but Yes. :3
- Pushing back against the worst canon episode a bit but: relative ear size being the only obvious sexually dimorphic trait, and even that having enough of a gray area that the only way to be 100% sure you're talking to a male or female Ferengi is if you do a blood test. Unless they're intersex! *shrug emoji*
- This is why they're so fanatical about gender conformity and their Victorian "separate spheres" attitude to men and women's roles. Capitalist patriarchy is fragile! And as artificial to Ferengi as it ever was to Humans! (self-indulgenceeeee about gender shiiiiit)
- You know how with domesticated rabbits, the rabbit getting groomed and paid attention to is the boss? Yeah. Go ahead and paint your bestie's nails, just don't be surprised if she cops a little bit of an attitude with you from then on.
- Their fight/flight/freeze/fawn instincts skew heavily toward the last three, and what a lot of other species read as annoying sucking up is the Ferengi in question feeling anxious and unsafe. Especially if they don't feel integrated into the group. Even being at the bottom of the pecking order is better than not being in the flock at all.
- If they DO opt for fight, it's ugly and typically their last resort. Bites or scratches will get infected without intervention-- microbes that their immune system can handle could cause big trouble for aliens. You might wanna check for full or partial teeth that break off and get lodged in the wound, too.
- Too many of these are tooth related but I don't care. :B More teeth stuff: you know what else has teeth that grow constantly? Puffer fish. Likewise, Ferengi can chew up mollusk shells as easy as potato chips, and they need the minerals for their teeth. (Imagine grandpa Sisko offering Nog a crayfish for the first time and watching as he just...pops the whole damn thing in his mouth and crunches away...)
- Their staple foods seem to be grubs and other arthropods, high in protein and fat. I've unilaterally decided their cuisine also involves a lot of edible fungi, ferns, plant shoots and seeds. Gotta get those vitamins. Overall flavor profile leaning toward umami, vegetal, and fresh herbs, and pretty mild (or "delicate" if you wanna be snooty about it, which a Ferengi probably would let's be real).
- Not much sugary food. I'm basing this solely on Quark's aversion to root beer as "cloying". Which could definitely just be his personal preference, but most of the people I hear hating on root beer cite the actual sassafras/sarsaparilla flavor (saying it tastes like medicine) not the sweetness. Nog might be the weirdo outlier for being able to enjoy it.
- Their home planet isn't bright and sunny, so their eyes are better at discerning shades of gray in low light conditions, with relatively weak color vision. Which could explain why they dress Like That.
- Conversely, human music has a reputation for stinking on ice because a lot of it is juuuuust lightly dissonant or out of tune because we can't pick up flaws that small. Ferengi can, and it drives them up the *wall*.
- Music? So many different kinds. Traditionally, maybe lots of percussion and winds, and water as a common component of many instruments to alter pitch or tone. Polyphony out the ass. Some of the modern stuff is an impenetrable wall of sound if you're not a species with a lot of brain real estate devoted to processing sounds. Pick out one melody to follow at a time.
- Yes, back to teeth again I'm sorry. It's a sickness. At some point in their history, pre-chewing food was just something you did for your baby or great grandma as a matter of necessity. Possibly your baby gets an important boost to their immune system and gut biome from your spit. At some point takes on a more formal intimacy aspect and gradually drifted from something all adults and older kids do to something only women do. Your husband and older kids have perfectly functional teeth, but you love them, right? =_= (Think old memes about husbands being useless in the kitchen if little wifey isn't there to cook, but even more ridiculous. Ishka was right about everything but especially this. Thank you for making your family chew their own food, Ishka. Not all heroes wear capes. Or anything!)
- How did they get started on the whole men: clothed vs women: unclothed nonsense? My equally stupid idea: men just get cold easier. Those huge ears dissipate a ton of body heat. Cue Ferengi cliches like "jeez, we could be standing on the surface of the sun and my husband would put on another layer." At some point, again, this got codified and pushed to ridiculous extremes in the name of controlling women and keeping everyone in their assigned box, to the point that women just have to shiver if they really are too cold and men have to pass out from heat stroke if the alternative is going shirtless, because That Would Be Inappropriate.
- Marriages default to five years, but they're also the only avenue for women to have their own household or any stability. Plus their religion places no emphasis on purity save for pure adherence to the free market and the RoA. So, curveball to the rest of their patriarchal bullshit: female virginity isn't a concern in the least. Bring it up and they'll rightly side-eye you.
- Family law is absolutely bonkers and lawyers that specialize in it make BANK. I feel like custody would default to the father usually but oh wait, the maternal grandfather has a legal stake in this, too, and your next father-in-law is asking HOW many kids are you dragging into my daughter's house, etc etc. Growing up with a full sibling is way rarer than growing up with half or stepsiblings, since it usually takes both men and women two or three tries to find someone they vibe with. (Not love, unless you're super cringe.)
- A misogynistic society is a homophobic society. Imo those flavors of shittiness just come in pairs. Homosexual behaviors are fine within certain parameters (aka "always have sex with the boss") but not on your own terms. To add spice, bisexuality is their most common mode (because I'm bi and these are my hcs for my fics I'm not writing, so there), but capitalism demands fresh grist for the mill so you better get het-married and pop out some kids you lowly peons. You have a choice so make the proper one. :)
- Corollary to the above, that doesn't keep all kinds of illicit "we're just friends with quid-pro-quo benefits for realsies" affairs of every stripe and every gender from going on everywhere. Many Ferengi have a lightbulb moment somewhere in early adulthood when they figure out their dad's business partner or the "auntie" who visited their mom every month had a little more going on.
- Plus there's way more gender non-conformity and varying degrees of trans-ing than the powers that be have a handle on. Pel isn't unique, even if most would have to somehow make it out into space to be able to thrive.
Damn a lot of these are just my personal bugbears plus THE GILDED AGE BUT WITH HAIRLESS SPACE RODENTS ain't they
- Women can't earn profit, okay. But lending or "lending" things to each other isn't commerce, riiiiiiight? To be assigned female is to master navigating a vast, dizzying barter/gift economy. Smart boys and men leverage this, too, and there are splinter sects that view this as the purest expression of the Great Material Continuum.
- Of course plenty of women make profit anyway, and just do their bast to dodge the FCA. The tough thing about insisting on using latinum as currency is that cash can be so hard to track, you know?
- Because of the RoA, guys are discouraged from doing favors or giving gifts without setting clear expectation of getting some return on investment. This can twist into an expression of friendship (and of course women do it too), and the ledger will keep cycling between debit and credit among friends for decades. A common mistake aliens make is to tell them recompense isn't needed without explaining why, or return their favor or present with something that zeroes out the debt. The Ferengi will assume you want to break off the friendship. (I cribbed this from dim memories of an African studies course I took in 2007 and whose textbook I know I still have but I can't frigging find it...)
- Flirting, they do a lot of it for a lot of reasons. Roddenberry made it clear that they're just straight up pretty horny, but there's no reason it can't pull double duty for building alliances with other people, smoothing over feuds or disagreements, or cementing friendships. Ferengi who are ace and/or sex-repulsed are possibly viewed similar to the way we'd view someone who's "not a hugger/not big on touching" and if they flirt just don't get offended if it doesn't go any further; aro Ferengi don't garner much comment aside from an occasional "wow how badass, never falling in love with anyone."
- where to even start on making sense of the Blessed Exchequer??? Like seriously, what is this literal prosperity gospel insanity, I need to force myself to re-read Rand and like, some Milton Friedman for this shit. Help.
- fuck I'm probably going to actually do that, RIP me...
#ds9#star trek#meta#ferengi#i love them Too Much help#reliving my brief libertarian phase from high school from the opposite direction#my heart wants to make them simultaneously as queer and as repressed as possible#i didn't even make it to the goddamned blessed exchequer my head is too full#i will find beauty in this vulgarity if it kills me#this is too long#why did i spend my time this way

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG CAN YOU PLZZZZZ DO VALENTINES DAY DANCE HCS FOR KIRISHIMA, KACCHAN, DENKI, SHOUTO, AND MOMO PLZZZZZZZZZZ
YES OF COURSE I CAN!
– – – – –
Eijiro Kirishima
Kirishima is the most casual out of everyone
When he asks you to be his valentine you almost think he means it platonically at first
The only thing that makes you realize he’s asking you out on a date is how he’s trying to hide that his arms keep hardening from nerves
His excitement when you say yes is incredible, he gets motivated to do some wildly intense workouts with Bakugo while he tells him all about it
He’s still very casual when he shows up at your house on the morning of Valentine’s day, handing you a bouquet of flowers and some chocolate covered strawberries while talking to you like you were about to go workout together
It’s extremely endearing, especially when you notice that he’s fiddling with his shirt nervously and his voice will sometimes waver when he talks because he’s so nervous and trying to hide it
You take his hand once you get everything set down and you two go off on your date
He takes you on just about the cheesiest Valentine’s day date in the world
You have breakfast at some little cafe he found then he takes you to a local fair going on, bringing you to all the game booths to win you a prize from each one
He gets especially soft if he wins you a shark plushie because both of you know that you’re gonna compare it to him
It makes him blush anyway
The date doesn’t have many twists and turns, and it’s kinda cliche, but it’s the most perfect date you could’ve come up with and the more you show how much fun you’re having, the more you feel Kirishima loosen up and relax
He tries to kiss you at the end of the night but his arms harden too much for him to cup your face, so you kiss his cheek while he’s leaned over blushing before dashing back into your place
Katsuki Bakugo
Bakugo is not exactly fantastic at being romantic
He gets embarrassed easy and then he starts yelling to deal with the embarrassment
Asking you to be his valentine was very soft until Katsuki noticed someone watching the two of you and he turned bright red and started shouting the question instead
You said yes anyway, of course
You weren’t totally sure if he was going to do much on the day, so you tried not to get your hopes up too high- he never really came off as a romantic type, you figured the chances of him bringing you gifts or taking you somewhere special were slim
But when he showed up at your house early in the morning with a bouquet of flowers and box of chocolates you were very quickly corrected
You took the gifts just in time before he started getting antsy and his quirk acted up, getting the flowers in a vase and chocolates on the table before anything happened to them (the same couldn’t be said for your doorframe, but you weren’t too concerned about scuff marks on that)
He’s really sweet the whole day (even if he still teases you a lot)
If you two go out he’ll have an arm slung over your shoulders the whole time
You ask if it’s a jealous thing and he gets mad
(It’s totally a jealous thing- he’s gotta make sure everyone knows you’re his)
He kisses you at the end of the day and it’s obvious he spent the whole date building himself up to do it
Now that he’d done it, you were both going to spend the next several days thinking about it
Denki Kaminari
Yes Denki is a flirt
Yes he is going to use at least ten more pickup lines on you than usual on the day he plans on asking you to be his valentine
Shockingly he isn’t super grandiose with the proposal (but you’re pretty sure that’s just because Sero and Mina refused to hold a banner for him)
It’s still major flirting though- his goal is to get you blushing enough that it’s easier to say his genuine feelings without getting hit with any embarrassment or shame
It’s obvious that he’s gonna be going all out for it
But you don’t really realize just how all out he’s going until he shows up at your house with one of the biggest bouquets you’ve ever seen and a whole collection of gifts from the usual sweets to a necklace with a lightning bolt on it with a gift card to get a custom charm of your own design to put on it
He notices the shock on your face and chuckles in that slightly nervous way as he tells you that he wanted to make this really memorable and good
You melt more hearing him be so soft than you do at all of his flirting
Though there’s no lack of that, either
You guys spend the whole day wandering through parks and towns, Denki hadn’t planned things out too meticulously so you guys could just be together rather than worry about a schedule (definitely not because he didn’t expect to get this far and had zero ideas. No way)
If a stray cherry blossom falls early, he’ll catch it and put it in your hair or behind your ear and tell you how cute it looks
He really does act like a major softie for most of the date
He does kiss you several times though- the one at the end of the day is especially perfect and your lips are buzzing with electricity the rest of the night
Shouto Todoroki
Shouto is... Kinda clueless
He’s very unintentionally smooth but when he’s trying to be romantic he gets awkward
Asking you to be his valentine was very blunt
He said it so confidently and abruptly that you were caught off guard and wound up stuttering your yes
None of the confidence was real he was an anxious mess in his head the whole time
The whole room got a couple degrees colder while he was asking and several degrees hotter when you said yes
You found yourself getting nervous when the day came- was he going to take you somewhere fancy? Should you dress up? Would answering the door already dressed up be weird? Would it be weirder if he was dressed up and you weren’t?
He knocked before you could actually make a decision, so you opened the door in your pajamas and hoped the date wasn’t in a rush
The way he smiled when he saw what you were wearing was going to make you blush for weeks
Apparently this was perfect- as he gave you your flowers and candy he explained that you two had a reservation at some restaurant you’ve never heard of later that day and he was planning on taking you shopping beforehand so you could find an outfit you liked
You worried you’d look out of place in fancy stores being underdressed but he shook his head, reassuring you that you looked perfect
He told you to get whatever you wanted because it was all going on his dad’s credit card
It was a really nice date, even if he was too awkward to kiss you on the lips (you got a kiss on the cheek though, which was equally perfect)
Momo Yaoyorozu
Momo is more on the awkward side than the smooth side when she asks you
It’s not because she’s bad at romance, she just gets so nervous so easily and she likes you so much and what if you say no and oh gosh-
When you say yes you can see how much she relaxes
She doesn’t make your date a surprise like the others do
She wants to plan it out with you to make sure you both enjoy it (and tell you all of her hundreds of ideas so you can help narrow the options down)
Really, the two of you had like three Valentine’s days since you spent so much time planning your date out and spending time together that way
She, like Shouto, takes you too a pricey restaurant you’ve never heard of and takes you to buy a fancy outfit beforehand
The rich kids are pretty good at spoiling their crush, it seems
She brought way more presents to your door than you were expecting- flowers, candy, a stuffed animal, apparently she was really excited to spend time with you and wanted to give the gifts as a thank you
Before your fancy dinner date she insists you take her to your favorite places around where you live (she says it’s just because she wants to know the area you live better but you’re pretty sure she has another motive considering how you keep catching her staring at you with hearts in her eyes as you tell her about some store you like)
You’re pretty sure she has more fun than you do when you go shopping for an outfit
The hearts in her eyes are replaced with stars as she holds clothes up beside you and imagines how you’d look in them
To be fair it’s extremely cute and you’re pretty sure you just fell for her even more
At the end of the night she gets way too nervous to kiss you, so you kiss her hand instead before she goes
She’s still staring at her knuckles when you see her the next day

Fire Lord Ozai: A blood thirsty monster or the less fortunate “Zuko” of his generation?
Hello again and thank you as always for clicking and allotting some of your time to read my humble post! Since I’ve happened to notice quite an increase in posts lately regarding the controversial character and nature of the former Fire Lord, the now imprisoned fallen prince Ozai, and I’ve personally promised in my previous post that I will share my own analysis on him if people asked me to do so (which actually happened), I am here to deliver my own take on this very intriguing man’s character, while also building a potential past for him based on stuff gathered from the show’s cannon.
I would like to start this essay with what I find to be my favorite quote ever: ”Monster’s aren’t born, they are created.” ~ Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto) What I like about this quote soo much and find very inspirational is the truth it holds within its short, yet powerful message. We are often fast to judge a “book by the cover”, to reduce others to what we assume of them by their appearance or latest actions that we’ve seen them do, but never actually take a moment and wonder where they come from, if this person we soo harshly look down upon really has been this way since their very beginning?
I’ve come across many comments on social media related to ATLA, especially on YouTube videos on which people would throw with harsh comments such as “Aang being a coward for choosing to spare the villain just because they saw a dumb baby pic of them” or “Ozai is the essence of evil and even as a baby he’d been a monster”. I can’t help but wonder who hurt these people to make them be so cruel? Like, how messed up must you actually be to say that a baby, a friggin baby, is the embodiment of all evils? Or that a child was a coward for choosing to see his opponent’s last bits of humanity and opted to spare them?
Aang was soo morally conflicted about the idea of killing Ozai not only because it contradicted the morals of his people, but because he himself understood that this man hadn’t always been the cruel beast he came to met in their first and final showdown. It’s important to note here the fact that upon finding that picture, Aang was actually convinced it had to be Zuko as a baby since it looked so innocent and cute and was actually surprised to learn it was Zuko’s father. And that’s the thing, Ozai was born like us all as an innocent and sweet baby. Babies aren’t in any way evil or twisted, they don’t even have the notion of ‘good’ and ‘evil’ defined in their small, still developing minds. In fact, the very choice of the creators to add this picture in the show is meant to tell us this very thing: this man wasn’t always like this. But if he wasn’t always like this, then what happened to make him become this way?
Well, in order to find out the reason, we must go back in time to the very beginning: Ozai’s childhood and upbringing. For this next part I am going to solely focus on the show cannon, as the comics aren’t the products of BryKe and have a lot of inconsistencies to the source’s cannon (you can go and read my other post on why they fail when it comes to Zuko’s character and his family).
From what we know and can easily deduce by ourselves just from their appearances, Ozai and his brother Iroh have a huge age gap between them (somewhere between 10 and 15 years). This has to be our first red flag: isn’t it soo odd that this family opted to have their children at such a long distance between pregnancies? It almost feels as if Ozai hadn’t actually been part of his father’s actual family planning... In other words, he was a ‘mistake’ child (I actually hate having to use this terminology, but it will become relevant to when we expand on Azulon’s relationship with his sons). Sure, some may argue that Azulon actually decided to have two sons in case something were to happen to his first born, but wouldn’t it have been more logical to have his second born at 2-3 years max distance from his first? Why choose to have your second child when you are much older and thus risk having a baby with issues, if your sole purpose of this child is to serve as an insurance that you don’t ‘run out’ of heirs? It just doesn’t make much sense, so let’s go for the moment with the possibility that Ozai was an unplanned pregnancy.
This perspective actually gives way to another very interesting aspect: remember the infamous “Born lucky...Lucky to be born” quote? What if I tell you that there is a possibility that this quote wasn’t Ozai’s personal wicked invention, but actually something he himself heard from his very own father? It had been puzzling me for a long time why he choose to say “You were lucky to be born” to Zuko, which implies that Zuko wasn’t supposed to exist. I mean, it’s soo odd that Ozai went with something implying that Zuko was an unplanned pregnancy, since Zuko was the first born. So my theory is that maybe Ozai wanted to convey a different message to Zuko when he said that quote, but due to his anger he ended up replicating the same line he received from Azulon at some point in his childhood. We never got the exact flashback when the line was delivered from Ozai to Zuko, so we don’t have the exact context that lead to it (remember, we are excluding Yang’s take on the matter from the comics).
I mean, this feels like something that wicked old Azulon would have said to his least favorite child. Okay, so let’s go with the scenario that Ozai was an unwanted child, to which we could also add the possibility that Ilah’s health deteriorated after the first birth, which makes plausible the family’s initial decision of stopping at 1 kid.
Moving on, we know from the old ATLA character wiki’s that Ozai’s character design was made with Zuko in mind, being meant to be a grown up version of Zuzu, without the scar. An interesting choice indeed and even Iroh’s letter to Zuko on Ozai from one of the ATLA books describes Ozzy in a similar way to teenage Zuko in book 1: stubborn, feisty, determined and with a volcanic personality (easy to anger and competitive), so it means that these were intentional choices to imply that Zuko and his father are more similar than we were led to believe at first glance. Maybe Ozai was the “Zuko” of his generation. Also, in one of the interviews on the royal family, BryKe stated that Ozai worked very hard to get where he is in book 3, referring to his firebending specifically (we all know how Ozzy got the throne, so clearly, he didn’t “work hard” for that), so maybe he wasn’t always the strongest man alive, with the most exceptional firebending skills out there, like Azula who showed ease in her learning, but rather someone closer to Zuko’s weaker performance as a child, building his way to success through endless hard work until he became the prodigy we know today.
Continuing with our theoretical scenario, after his birth, the second child show’s lesser skills compared to his brother Iroh (by that I don’t mean that he wasn’t gifted at all, but that maybe Ozai wasn’t as fast and great of a learner like his big bro), so Azulon opts to just ignore him and continue focusing solely on his golden child. In my headcannon I actually think that Ilah survived the birth and so she was left in charge of the younger child’s education and upbringing. At this point Iroh is already 10 or older, so he is forced to focus on his development, which prevents him from spending time with his lil brother, but just for the sake of being positive, let’s assume that Ozai still had both his mother and his big brother to keep him sheltered from Azulon’s darkness for a small portion of his childhood.
I choose to believe that Ozai had his mother’s love for a small bit of his childhood due to his willingness in the show to allow Ursa (who mind you, as the granddaughter of Roku was considered a treacherous individual) to spend a ton of time with both Zuko and Azula and share her philosophy with the children, as seeing his wife playing with their children probably reminded him of his own bitter-sweet memories he had with Ilah. They also probably spent a lot of their time near the turtle-duck pond since that pond’s existence prolly dates long before Ozai and Ursa married and had their own children.
Unfortunately, Ilah dies and little Ozai remains all alone, to be influenced negatively by his father (and even by his grandpa Sozin, we don’t really know for certain when the old man died, so he prolly was there for a short time when Ozzy was still a child). Azulon most likely blames Ozai for his wife’s death as the second birth might’ve really had a huge toll on Ilah’s already fragile body, bringing her closer to death, so he still neglects and ignores the child, if not straight out bullies and abuses him for not being on par with Iroh. This prolly leads to Ozai becoming jealous of his brother since Iroh has their father’s love, pushing them further apart. I headcannon that this jealousy between the siblings led to Ozai complaining to his dad when he finally had too much of their father’s discrimination (at a similar age to when Zuko prolly did and got the infamous line, if not younger) only to get the “Iroh was born lucky, you were lucky to be born!” line with the sole purpose of hurting him since now the child knows that he was never wanted.
When Azulon scolds very furiously adult Ozai in Zuko’s memories for daring to ask to be named crown prince, he literally says something like “What, you dare ask me to betray MY own son?!” (this is like red flag number two), line that pretty much testifies how Azulon chose to pretty much treat Ozai as if he wasn’t his son too, showcasing how much he despised his second born and favored the first child over him. Since we are on the topic of their last conversation, the punishment Azulon gave to his son alone proves this man’s level of sadism, which leads me to be believe that Ozai’s childhood was full of this type of punishments for bad behaviors that could be easily corrected trough a long serious lecture or a lesser punishment focused more on teaching him an actual lesson.
The old wikis also mention on the page about the hall with portraits of the previous Fire Lords that it was the place where Ozai chose to spend most of his time in his youth, seeking advice from his ancestors. I mean, seriously now, if he had a good and supportive father and a present brother in his life, would Ozai had chosen to seek guidance from the dead instead of his living family? That piece of information that was easily overlooked by many proves how lonely this man was in his youth.
So for the most part of his life, Ozai grew up under the toxic influence and abuse of his tyrant father who refused to acknowledge him. Yet he managed to grow up still full of determination to one day prove his worth to Azulon and gain his acceptance (just like we saw with Zuko in book 1, who was desperate to regain his honor and be accepted by his father). But unfortunately, no matter how strong he became or how good of a firebender he was, Azulon was unmoved and unphased by his second son’s performance.
From what we could gather from the little info we received in the show, it seems that Ozai was never sent to the battle field to aid his older brother, being kept as a stay home prince, with the only occasion he actually left home being to search for the Avatar (I don’t think Iroh was sent to do his part on searching the Avatar since he strongly believed that there wasn’t going to ever be one, so it’s safe to assume Azulon assigned Ozai with this mission just to get rid of him for a few years) and the only purpose he ever served to his father was to become part of the old man’s genetics experiment in order to create strong unparalleled firebending offspring (which I am pretty sure were meant to be ‘biological war machines’ used by Azulon in the war, as he didn’t really seem to give a shit about Ozai’s children compared to Lu Ten). So just imagine the level of disappointment and dishonor Ozai must’ve felt as a man and young aspiring soldier to find out that he was going to be used like a ‘non-bending daughter’ in a strategical marriage and never get to serve his country in what he’d been taught was the greatest and most important war for their Nation.
All in all, this marriage didn’t really end up that badly because it seems he and Ursa were actually very compatible. The old wiki for Ursa states that she was a noble woman and the perfect match for Ozai, which leads me to believe that show Ursa was intended to be a very strong willed and determined woman who earned his respect. The show never stated that Ozai never wanted his first born or that he was disappointed with Zuko from birth like the comics say, so it’s safe to assume that Ursa and Ozai actually ended up falling in love at some point since they had not one, but two kids with relatively a short time in between pregnancies.
There are actually many signs in the show that actually prove that these two loved each other and Ozai didn’t abuse his wife: from the fact that they went every year to see Ursa’s favorite play despite Ozai hating the poor performance of the Ember Island Players (I mean, what man would do such a sacrifice as to endure the same torture every single year just to make his wife happy if he never loved her?), Ursa’s undeniable and sincere love for their children (in the show it was never stated that Ursa saw Zuko and Azula as someone else’s children, so if she were indeed an abused woman who was forced to have these children, she wouldn’t have ever loved them to such an extent, especially Zuko who resembled his father the most physically), the fact that Ursa had equal rights in their marriage and raising of their children (her even scolding and grounding Ozai’s favorite child without hesitation), to the most significant scene to the Urzai ship in Zuko’s flashbacks: Ozai sitting troubled all alone in Ursa’s favorite spot by the pond, in a sad and brooding atmosphere, after he lost her, instead of celebrating what had to be the happiest day of his life since he was finally crowned Fire Lord (it’s clear who had more importance in his heart: Ursa meant more to him than the throne, so losing her outshined his achievement). In fact, Ursa must’ve been the only thing that still kept him outside of the darkness that threatened to swallow his heart and once he lost her, Ozai had nothing else to keep him on the right path.
And even as a father, it seems that Ozai wasn’t always cold and distant to his children, as his true self depicted in Zuko’s memories on Ember Island shows him caring for both of his children, even holding Zuko close to him with a protective arm on the boy’s shoulder. Except the Agni Kai, there don’t seem to be any instances in which he was physically violent towards his son before the banishment (Iroh literally let Zuko in to join that faithful war meeting willingly. Would’ve he done that if he knew his brother to be very violent towards his children in case they disobeyed? If yes, then it would make Iroh actually very questionable on a moral standpoint) and even on an emotional level, I don’t really think that he was actually abusive to him (at least while Ursa was there) because from Zuko’s conversation with Zhao, he’s adamant that his father will take him back and even states "You don't know how my father feels about me. You don't know anything!", meaning that the father he used to know showed him a level of respect and genuine affection (if Ozai were to bully Zuko since the boy’s very early childhood, do you think this kid would grow up to be so sure that his father wants him around and would he defend this bully when someone badmouths them in front of him?).
Even with Azula, despite people demonizing her from early childhood and saying that she was manipulated since birth by Ozai to become a war machine, I do believe that she shows genuine love and affection towards her father. I do choose to believe that back in the good times when the family was happy, Ozai spent quality time with his daughter, filling in the gap left by Ursa’s neglect. I theorize that the reason why kid Azula badmouthed her grandpa and uncle was because she was being very protective of her father: since she used to like spying and eavesdropping, it’s safe to assume that she prolly witnessed many instances in which the old man bullied or insulted Ozai, favoring Iroh over him. It’s a bit harder to see it that way since her snarky comments involve dark topics, but since they live in a society governed by power and war, I see them as something similar to if Azula would’ve said “Uncle sucks and he will surely be fired from his job!” or “Grandpa is old and weak, he should leave the family business to dad!”. Even the fact that the only thing capable of shattering her to pieces was her father leaving her proves how much she cared for him. Ty Lee and Mai’s betrayal was a big blow on Azula’s control and sanity, but she didn’t breakdown until Ozai discarded her after his coronation as Phoenix King. There’s nothing more painful in this world than to be left behind by the person you loved the most and was there by your side your whole life, whom you wanted to follow to world’s end and back. That was the moment Azula finally realized that the father she used to know and love was actually gone and had been in fact, long gone for years at this point.
But if Ozai cared for his family what made him change? Easy, it all comes back to the fact that his father never acknowledged him. The throne doesn’t seem to be his ultimate goal in life since Ozai discarded of the Fire Lord title very easily, tossing it to Azula without any remorse or hesitation. It was more about the meaning behind getting the crown: replacing Iroh in the line of succession was the ultimate proof of his father’s acceptance, that he wasn’t only a “mistake” and “failure” in his father’s eyes, but since Azulon ended up saying and doing what he did, backfired Ozai and made him understand that no matter how hard he tried, the old man will never see him for what he is. So yeah, for a proud man like Ozai this was a hard defeat to swallow, which in turn sparked his strong desire of winning the war and becoming the king of the world: if Azulon wouldn’t accept him even in death, then Ozai will prove to the whole world that he was above his father and his “perfect” brother by accomplishing what they never could and even better and no one was going to stop him, not even his own family.
This is what differentiates Ozai from Zuko: while both had similar upbringings, Ozai never broke away from his obsession of gaining his fathers admiration, allowing himself to fall prey to the darkness left by Azulon in his heart and abandon his true self, only to become the copy of his abuser, while Zuko stood up to his dad and chose his own destiny. If Aang were to come back around 20 or 30 years earlier, then he might’ve actually been able to save Ozai just like he saved Zuko, but unfortunately it wasn’t this way.
Do I think that Ozai could still be saved and redeemed even after the events of book 3? Definitely! Since he’s actually a broken man and still has a tiny bit of humanity left within, I think he still has a chance to change his heart. The only thing is that it’d be a long lasting process: first off he needs to spend a long time in solitude and reflect on his life’s choices and his past, understand where he went wrong and that what happened to him in his childhood is called abuse, which he ended up replicating on his own children. After he understands his wrongdoings and becomes willing to rediscover his true self, he needs to understand the truth about the war, that everything he’d known was fake propaganda and that there was nothing glorious in what he, his father and Sozin did under the excuse of “sharing their Nation’s greatness with the rest of the world!”. But most importantly of all, the only remedy that could possibly save him is love. It sound cliche, but by responding to hatred with more hate like Zuko did in the comics would never change the world “for the better” or bring it “to reality”. The only way to save both Azula and Ozai would be trough showing them the power of love, hope and empathy, how they don’t have to struggle alone and push everyone away. And especially by redeeming Azula, she would be a very important piece in Ozai’s redemption: since he had a closer parent-child relationship with Azula and cared for her the most when he did care, realizing how much he made her suffer through his actions, that would probably break Ozai enough to make him admit that he was wrong all along.
So yeah, this is my analysis on Ozai’s character using the cannon information from the show and old wikis and why I think he is just the product of a very bad environment and an abusive parent who never showed him love (if there’s a reason for why Ozai might be uncapable of showing a healthy parental love to his children is because you can’t show what you’ve never learnt yourself), being the Zuko of his generation who never got to experience the positive influence of an “Uncle Iroh” to guide him on the right path.
You can agree with me or not on this one, but this is what I choose to believe. Maybe I am way too good by choosing to see any potential good in anyone, but I feel it’s a better way than to counter hate with more hate like Yang did in his monstrous portrayal of Ozai in The Search.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments and if you agree with anything I’ve said, feel free to leave a like and to reblog this post.
See you next time and stay safe! Bye-Bye!

Rabbit Dad Theory: A Weapon to Surpass Dad for One
okay so. I know that the theory about local big bad of the series being the protagonist’s father , but I’m pretty sure the real reason that midoriya’s dad hasn’t shown up in the plot is because he’s a rabbit
no really
[ WARNING: LONG post under the cut ]
Part 1: Rabbit Motifs
To get this party started properly, let’s begin with a bunch of the rabbit symbolism regarding Midoriya himself.
The most notable of which being that his hero costume is literally him dressing up as a rabbit
His freckles are even stylized to look like little rabbit whiskers. fuckin naruto kinnie
It bleeds into his fighting style too
Two big innovations he has that aren’t based on previous users of one for all
are hopping from place to place
and his big, rabbit-like kicks.
(which would also go a ways to explain why the plot thought Midoriya having legs was a big deal)
A lot of this goes into his characterization as well. The most notable bit being how much the first chapter of bnha parallels the story of the moon rabbit.
(Sometimes referred to as the jade rabbit which. Green)
Anyway, the story goes that a rabbit, along with a bunch of other animals (it varies depending on region) decided to gather food for the full moon as an offering, believing that the best one will bring a reward from the gods.
All of the animals bring plentiful amounts of food, sans the rabbit, who brings only grass.
Eventually, a starving old man comes along.
The other animals have food to give him, but refuse to do so to meet their own ends.
The rabbit, sympathizing with the old man, throws itself into a fire he was kindling so that he can be fed.
The old man, touched by the rabbit’s actions, reveals himself to be a god and saves it.
In honor of the rabbits deeds, the god imprints his image on the moon, bestowing special gifts to him.
Along with this there are a number of other mild rabbity traits tho.
Such as his skittishness.
Not to mention his general resourcefulness.
The show regularly conflates Midoriya being himself with him looking and acting more and more like a rabbit. This isn’t too hard to understand from a Doylist perspective; Horikoshi blatantly just likes bunnies. (I mean just look at Miruko)
What’s interesting here is that we’ve never been given an in-universe explanation for why midoriya himself identifies this way. In a series that is otherwise really invested in dissecting the ideal versions of themselves that characters want to live up to, the show doesn’t provide any justification for a character motif Midoriya has that is almost as present as all might himself.
Judging from the title of this post, you can probably guess what my reasoning for this choice is.
**Part 2: Hisashi’s Quirk **
“But snake,” you may be asking yourself, “We already know what Hisashi Midoriya’s quirk is. He breathes fire.”
This is true. he probably does. Consider what we know in-universe, though.
Characters with heteromorphic quirks don’t have their physical attributes listed as a part of their quirks if they have a secondary characteristic.
Tokoyami is the most obvious example. He’s a bird person, but his quirk is dark shadow. The fact that he’s a bird man goes unmentioned because as far as anyone is concerned, the shadow monster is his power.
Characters like Spinner have their animal attributes listed as quirks, but that’s only because he can’t do anything a gecko wouldn’t. If he didn’t make his lizard powers his quirk he’d have nothing to put.
If Midoriya’s dad happened to be, say, a rabbit that could breathe fire, the fire quirk would be listed while the rabbit bit went unstated. In fact, in a roundabout way, the fire quirk makes rabbit dad even more plausible.
You see, most of the animal character designs in bnha are actually recycled from an old series horikoshi did called oumagadoki zoo. Mind you this isn’t a knock at horikoshi or anything. A lot of mangaka do this sort of thing. I’m mostly bringing it up because one of the main characters is a rabbit called Shiina
and one of the early gags in the series is him smoking a carrot like a cigar.
This would be very easy to translate to my hero academia’s setting if said character happened to breathe fire.
I should also say for those keeping score at home that I don’t necessarily think Hizashi is a Shiina expy specifically (tbh I kinda imagine him being more like a fluffy spike spiegel). At most I think it’s probably just some design motifs and some VERY loose plot points.
There is also the somewhat mild rebuttal of Midoriya never attempting to do anything rabbit-like while trying to see if he had a quirk, but I think that’s self explanatory. If Izuku was a rabbit he’d notice right away, so of course he didn’t bother checking.
**Part 3: Why He’s Absent **
Of course, another big question that might be on your mind is why he’s not present if that’s the simple truth of his identity. Why have him fail to show himself for what has now been 300 chapters?
I can think of two simple reasons:
1) It’s really funny
Just fuckin. The Mystique of it all. You can’t tell fans a character is going to show up eventually and fail to have them appear without piquing someone’s interest. It’s bound to make fans speculate, especially with the canon dabi twist hanging in the air. Years to imagine what his presence might entail if it was something big enough to be worth planning ahead for.
And then. Boom. Bunny.
Fucking. Hysterical.
2) The themes. Oh god the themes
You might have noticed by now but Horikoshi has a tendency of making like. The Shounen Jump equivalent to that rpg character you make as a joke that then has like. an undeniably tragic life when you’re actually forced to tackle with the implications of your own character building.
I would not be surprised if the Midoriyas ended up falling into that category.
So let’s get into that.
One of the big things that my hero academia attempts to tackle is the concept of normalcy.
Mostly how it’s kinda bullshit and, in many cases, outright harmful.
What makes this bit interesting within the context of Midoriya family is Izuku’s sort of. Artificial Plainness.
He is a character deliberately designed to look as normal as possible. The key word there is look. Basically anyone who’s been following the series long enough to be reading this post knows that the kid often struggles to keep his head down
which also makes it interesting that the only two scenes where Midoriya wears his rabbit cowl are scenes where he is actively questioning the status quo.
Methinks there is some symbolism here.
Which I guess brings us back to square one.
At the end of the day, the concept of Midoriya’s dad being a rabbit is funny because it’s so unexpected. Without him around, the Midoriyas look like a normal family.
But that’s also the kicker.
Without him around, the Midoriyas look like a normal family.
A lot of people are quick to call Izuku’s dad an absentee father, but technically speaking, we don’t quite know that yet. We’ve only been in a position where we don’t see him as the audience.
And, well, when your kid is being bullied for something as banal as being quirkless, you might not want to give society more ammunition to use against him.
It wouldn’t strike me as strange if he just avoided being seen in public with his son to keep him safe in his own way.
They say that the nail that sticks out gets hammered down the most. Under those circumstances, it’s not too hard to understand why the loosest nail might just feel safer wriggling out of the wood altogether.

it's pizza night at the gallagher-milkovich household!
word count: 2k
usually they order a couple pizzas from some local joint: thin crust chicago supreme for ian and deep dish meat lovers for mickey, though they steal pieces of each others' all the time (even if mickey has to pick off all the onions from ian's chicago supreme.)
but tonight ian wanted to do something different. the tomatoes and bell peppers from the garden were finally looking ripe. ian, with his green thumb, had spent most of spring and summer nurturing a row of plants in the community garden of their apartment complex. mickey had thought it was boring as fuck at first when nothing seemed to be changing, but eventually seeing the plants shoot up and seeing ian excited about all the new growth gave him a paternal kick somewhere from deep inside him. he even found himself wondering how the plants were holding up after a particularly bad thunderstorm one night. for fuck's sake -- was he a plant dad now? when the fuck did this happen?
and if they were going to make their own pizzas with ian's fresh vegetables, they sure as hell weren't going to cut any corners with the store-bought dough. though mickey would never admit it, he was getting pretty good at baking, which was something ian was both a little jealous and very proud of. at this point, mickey was basically a pro specifically at making orange cranberry bread (which ian had become immediately hooked on for a few weeks after jill brought over a loaf as a 'sorry-my-boyfriend-pissed-off-mickey' gift) and also at his favorite peanut butter chocolate chip cookies (mickey has such a sweet tooth, and ian has no idea how he hasn't had more cavities.) surely pizza dough couldn't be too much different than the rest of mickey's pretty impressive baking skills.
after work wednesday evening, mickey emerged from the shower with just a towel wrapped around his waist. he peeked out into the living room expecting to see ian zombified on the couch with the usual two boxes of pizza balanced across his legs. however, mickey was thrown off a bit as he spotted ian behind the kitchen counter rummaging through cabinets, occasionally opening the fridge, and proudly wearing his "i like to get high (quality ingredients)" apron, which had been a very appropriate birthday gift from lip.
"what's with all the ruckus in here, big bang," mickey teased. ian's wild eyes calmed a beat after they had finally noticed mickey standing in the doorframe. he checked out his husband up and down once over as a mischievous smile blossomed on his face.
"it's a surprise, but i'm gonna need you to put some clothes on," ian announced, even though his darkening eyes were saying quite the opposite.
mickey was rather hungry and curious about the shitstorm of a mess in the kitchen, so he decided not to push his luck with ian's lustful gaze and instead obediently turned around to pull on some sweatpants while mumbling something about "can't be too good of a surprise if i have to put on clothes." ian smirked from behind him.
mickey swaggered back to the kitchen wearing one of ian's old rotc t-shirts, hoping it would get enough of a rise out of ian for him to enthusiastically take it off late in the night. as if ian needed a reason.
"alright, alright, tough guy. what's the big surprise?"
ian slid his arm around mickey's waist and pulled them flush together as they stared at the array of ingredients sprawled out.
"Pizza," he stated as if it were a simple fact.
mickey's brow furrowed. there clearly wasn't any pizza on the counter. "where's the fuckin' pizza? or did you get too high," he teased, poking at ian's apron.
"ha. ha. very funny, babe. just high quality ingredients, remember?" ian winked and mickey smirked, musing at his dork. when mickey didn't counter him again ian cleared his throat and continued, "no, but for real. ya know how i've been growing vegetables in the garden here?"
mickey nodded. as if he could forget.
"well, for pizza night i was thinking that we could make our own with some of the vegetables and i was hoping," he dragged out the word and squeezed mickey's waist, "that you would make the dough, seeing that you're the star baker of the house."
mickey rolled his eyes. he didn't know where ian got the impression that he was the next best thing to a professional baker when he would usually just take the easy way out. especially when he was hungry and it came to pizza night. but he was secretly very excited to try the food that ian had spent so much time cultivating.
"yeah, man, let's get it." mickey leaned over the counter to turn the bluetooth speaker on and connect his phone, 'wait by the river' by lord huron playing. he grinned as he allowed ian to slide his hand down his arm and lace their fingers as they swayed together for a moment before pulling away and promptly getting to work on food prep.
ian hummed while he washed and chopped the vegetables, occasionally making comments about how he can't believe how colorful they are or how they had grown from nothing. mickey entertained his comments while he made the dough, "well not quite nothing. there was the seed and the sunlight and the shitty ass soil and you watered it a bunch and stuff. all that love ain't nothing." ian warmly smiled at how casually his husband talked about all forms of love now.
once everything was cleaned and diced and the dough was divided into two equal slabs, they got to shaping their crusts. mickey, being the little shit that he is, had extra flour on his hands and wiped some across ian's cheek. he took off behind the counter and into the living room before ian was able to even get out an agitated "what the fuck, mick!" ian was soon on his heels though and tackled him into the couch, wrestling and straddling him and pinning mickey's arms above his head with one hand and smearing flour from his own hand across mickey's cheek as he struggled.
"payback's a bitch," ian teased through his fits of laughter as mickey's face was twisted up in utter disgust, "oh c'mon, mick, can't take it?"
"you know exactly what i can take, asshole," mickey wiggled his eyebrow as he grumbled lowly. ian's face dropped in complete shock as he was taken off guard, and his grip loosened. mickey used that moment of weakness to flip ian off of him and straighten up his shirt as he stood, no mind to the floured handprints placed haphazardly all over himself, and definitely not entirely from his own hands.
"great, so pizza, then?" he smiled over his shoulder at a disheveled ian as he went to go shape the dough, innovatively using a can of beans as a rolling pin.
ian joined him behind the counter and smacked his ball of dough. "hmm"ed and paused. mickey turned to investigate the curious glint in ian's eye when he heard and felt a similar smack on his own ass.
"oh my fucking god, ian. we're never going to get anything done. i'm fucking starving," he groaned.
"as if you didn't start it!"
mickey paused for a moment. sure, fine, yeah. ian had a point with this one, "whatever." he poked ian in the side and then turned back to his pizza. after they were rolled out enough, ian picked up the spoon to put sauce on.
"nah, man! what the fuck are you doing?" mickey snapped, more with urgency than actual agitation, "we gotta cook them for a little bit first before putting all the shit on there, ya know?"
ian put his hands up in innocence and slowly backed away from both the pizzas and the oven, "my bad, chef, carry on."
mickey flipped him off before slipping the two crusts into the oven for a couple minutes. while they waited, ian picked up mickey's phone and pulled up a youtube compilation video of gordon ramsay 'critiquing' his chefs.
"hey mick, this is you in the kitchen."
they watched for a couple minutes as ian laughed his ass off.
"oh fuck off, you'd burn the place down without me," mickey retorted, carefully pulling the crusts out of the oven. ian just rolled his eyes and resumed playing the music from a spotify playlist that mickey totally did not have named 'date night🥀.'
they took turns spooning sauce with chunks of fresh tomato onto their half baked crusts and then sprinkled on some grated cheese and pepperoni, which they had picked up at the farmer's market on their last trip with a couple of the women in their complex they had accidentally befriended.
as much as mickey ate like a broke college kid when he was left to fend for himself most days, he really didn't mind vegetables (except for fucking onions -- those could rot in hell.) despite this, ian still looked on astonished as mickey piled on the veggies just as much as his pepperoni. that was really saying something.
mickey glanced up, "what, popeye? like you're the only one that gets to enjoy the shit from the garden? i gotta taste for myself all the hype that went into this!"
a look of pure adoration flashed across ian's face as he laid a smooch on mickey's forehead. mickey's felt fucking butterflies in his stomach. he thought that being married to the guy would make those feelings simmer down, but as if it was even possible, the flames burned even stronger.
as they waited for their pizzas to cook in the oven for the final time, they giggled like lovestruck teenagers as they wiped the flour off of each others' faces, making an even bigger mess than they started with, as mickey's hair was now dripping wet. they then cleaned off the countertops and packed the extra ingredients in some blue-lidded tupperware set that debbie had recommended.
ian got two beers out of the fridge, "special occasion," he reasoned. mickey scoffed. as if they needed a reason to get fucking smashed.
soon the pizzas were done, and only slightly burnt at the edges, "adds flavor," mickey reasoned. as if anything mickey actually put effort into cooking would be less than perfect.
ian sliced the warm pizzas as mickey grabbed a couple plates, pausing in his steps to not-so-subtly stare at his husband's biceps flex with the force of the pizza slicer.
they didn't even bother to put on a tv show in the background as they ate. mickey's phone was still playing some chill, lowkey romantic music, and they were just excited to dig in. at this point mickey was fucking starving. mickey quite literally moaned as he took his first bite. ian snapped his head to stare daggers at mickey, watching his throat intently.
"shiiiit. that good, huh?" ian murmured.
all mickey could manage to do was nod as he swallowed.
"might have to do this more often," ian suggested as he took a bite of his own slice. shit. this was good.
"good job growing this shit, man," mickey praised through a mouthful. he swallowed, then added on teasingly, but actually oh-so-serious, "might wanna try growing some mary jane next year if you keep it up with your green ass thumb."
"sure, mick." ian took a sip of his beer. ian would agree to anything mickey would ask of him right now, tipsy on both his beer and his fondness of his husband. as if he could read his mind, mickey reached his hand out to rest on ian's thigh, squeezing once before resting it there for the remainder of dinner.
they finished off the beers and pizzas in bliss, leaving the dishes near the sink to be tomorrow's problem. they didn't even make it out of the kitchen before ian started to tug on the hems of mickey's shirt.

Chapter Eight
“You know, it’s remarkably similar to Brighton Pier here.” I commented, fanning myself in desperation under the scolding sun and Ricky pushed his large sunglasses down to allow me to feel the full force of his judgement. “Well, except that it’s unmistakably hotter, obviously.”
“How dare you compare this beautiful sandy bliss to your pebble filled nightmare?” He remarked with a sweeping hand gesture at the beach, before sipping out of his straw with offence and I rolled my eyes at him.
Ricky has always been a force to be reckoned with, but as he got older, he only grew more confident and I was constantly inspired by how comfortable he was in himself. His thick brunette hair reached his collarbones now, but he currently had it pushed back out of his face with a colourful bandana so that he could tan. In order for him to worship the sun to his full capacity, he was wearing a worryingly small pair of shorts and had stretched himself across a lounger like the diva that he absolutely was.
“Hmm. Your actual beach is better, I’ll give you that one. But you’re seriously lacking on drag queens, quirky cafes and fancy boutiques to shop in.” I pointed out, fondly recalling the whirlwind weekend that we’d spent in the British city the last time that he’d visited me and he shrugged in defeat.
“Touché. You win this round.” He admitted, laying back to bask himself again, whilst I shuffled my sensitive skin further under the sun umbrella that he’d reluctantly agreed to allow me to bring over on the condition that it didn’t cause a single shred of shade over him.
It was a beautiful day, only improved by the quality of my company and I had to admit that I was endlessly pleased to have decided to extend my stay for another few days. Despite the years that had passed since we had last been in each other's physical company, Ricky was still able to put me at ease in a way that no one else had ever been able to emulate and I cherished the opportunity to simply relax with him at the Virginia Boardwalk.
“So, what’s it like being an FBI agent?” Ricky asked, turning his attention back to me with a smug expression. “Is it wonderful knowing that you have the power to stop anyone in their tracks? I would absolutely abuse my power for evil, but I know you’re too pure for that.” He muttered with delight and I chuckled at him knowingly. The things that he would use an FBI badge to accomplish didn’t even bear thinking about.
“Darling. I already told you. I’m not an FBI agent. I’m still a technical analyst for Interpol. I’m just on loan.” I repeated, already losing count of how many times I had made this distinction, but he still seemed as unconvinced by this as he was the first time that I told him.
“Oh, semantics! Sounds to me like you’re working for them and considering that you saved a girl from a burning building like a freaking hero, I’m just going to treat you like one.” He argued, seeming amused as if I were simply downplaying things, when realistically, it was a case of him dramatising the arrangement, as he did with most things. “We have an FBI agent in the family. That’s pretty cool.”
“There is absolutely no reasoning with you.” I groaned, shaking my head in embarrassment and he shrugged dismissively, as if this were an obvious fact that I should have accepted already. “How’s university going? Have you sorted your accommodation for your second year yet?”
“College is going fine. I’ve done a fantastic job being the life of the party, so I have plenty of offers for people to live with. My only struggle is choosing people who aren’t completely filthy as housemates. I can’t live in a grubbly little student hovel.” He explained, seeming repulsed by the very idea and I raised a brow at his diva attitude. “Don’t look at me like that. I’m not being dramatic. My first year in dorms, I shared a bathroom with straight men. You don’t understand the trauma that I’ve lived through.”
“Does your mother know that you haven’t arranged housing yet?” I interrogated, already sensing a hint of dishonesty in him and his features quickly contorted into a guilty look. “Rituparan! I understand being picky, but you’ll end up with no choice other than to live with the grimy jocks if you don’t hurry up. You need to get organised.” I scolded, earning an eye roll so severe that I worried his face might never recover from the strain.
“Don’t get your panties in a twist, Alley Cat. I’ll get it sorted. Now, drink your mocktail before it gets too diluted.” He ordered, sipping down the last of his drink and placing the little umbrella from the top in his hair with a flourish. The moment that he faced me, I knew that he had mischief in mind.
“Okay. Are you ready? Who am I?” He pouted so dramatically that his cheeks all but disappeared and I almost choked on my drink.
“Oh, too easy! That is the unforgettable Lola, the only woman on the planet who considers a cocktail umbrella the perfect hair accessory for any occasion.” I answered, earning a cheer and wicked laugh of satisfaction from him. “You know, I love having someone else to mock dad’s exes with. You’d think the fact that he only dates women my age would mean we’d have something in common, but alas, apparently a sense of humour isn’t shared by age group.”
“Of course they’re not funny! The only thing those girls come with is a price tag.” He sassed, flipping his hair back out of his face in a ridiculously bitchy gesture and I was immediately reminded of just how much I loved him. “At least you don’t have to pretend to like Tanya anymore. Honestly, if she had a second brain cell, she’d be dangerous.”
“Oh, no! They broke up?” I gasped, almost sounding convincing with my upset and he whipped his head around with drastic confusion. “I guess she had to bleed my dad dry of pocket money eventually.” I drawled, prompting a small yelp of surprise and a quick high five from Ricky.
Tanya had been dating my dad for just over six months now, so I knew that she was likely to be approaching her expiration date soon. His routine was well known amongst the entire family now and in an effort to counter the embarrassment that it caused for my mother and I, it had become a running joke for us all to share.
“Didn’t you hear the details?” Ricky crooned, turning to face me fully on his lounger with a devious expression and I shrugged nonchalantly. “According to Maji, she tried to charge her lip fillers to his business credit card. Caused all sorts of uproar at the office. I guess she’ll be making that duck face at someone else’s wallet now.” He divulged, pouting into an exaggerated model face for effect and I struggled not to splutter my drink everywhere in response.
Ricky’s mother always seemed to know everything that was happening in our family and I’d long believed that this was where he’d learned to dig information out of people. She was abnormally gifted in guilt tripping the truth out of even the most hardened family members and yet, she doted on Ricky as if he was the very thing that made her world turn. If I ever wanted to know what was going on in my dad’s life, I knew that I could rely on her to be up to date with events.
Before I could manage to recover enough to speak, my mobile rang with it’s sharp tone and I had to clamber around in my bag to find it. As soon as I saw the private number, my eyes grew wide in dread.
“Oh, no! The bat phone?” Ricky asked, seeming genuinely horrified that I might be called into work and I quickly nodded, before holding a finger to my lips to shush him.
“Agent Hawthorne.” I answered, feeling utterly ridiculous referring to myself this way in my current company. This insecurity was only made worse by Ricky sliding his shades back on in a judgemental manner and I gestured to him to stop distracting me.
“Alice. This is Hotch. Are you still in Virginia?”
The voice on the other end of the phone was as serious as ever and though I was enormously relieved to find that it wasn’t anyone from Interpol trying to order me home, I felt nerves building in my chest already.
“Yes, Sir. I am.” I reported, noticing Ricky raising his brows at me in interest and I knew that he was dying to know what was being said.
“I realise that you’re spending time with family, but would you be able to come into the office for a meeting? I have a matter that I would like to discuss with you in person, if possible.” Hotch requested, allowing me absolutely no hint of the cause for this meeting and I felt my face change into one of alarm.
My mind had already begun racing with all of the possible complications that I could be facing for my actions at the base now that all of the documentation for the case had been submitted and I was terrified that if any further charges were brought against me, they could contradict the deal that I made with Interpol to avoid imprisonment.
“Yes, Sir. I’ll come in right away.” I stuttered, attempting to fight down my terror. My hands shook with nerves as I hung up on the call and Ricky looked positively thrilled to have been given the opportunity to witness this conversation, as if he’d just been personally included in a matter of national security.
“It’s a good thing that you went for virgin cocktails, my dear. I have to get back to Quantico.” I confessed, quickly burying my nerves so that he wouldn’t sense trouble.
“Oh my god! This is so exciting!” He announced, hopping straight to his feet and flustering to grab his belongings that were spread across every surface around him. “One cab for Agent Hawthorne, coming right up!”

Standing in the lift of the Quantico building, I was overwhelmed with anxiety. I had been in such a rush to get here that it hadn’t even crossed my mind to change clothes, or to do anything to prepare my appearance at all. Though I knew that I didn’t have any more office clothes with me anyway, I acknowledged that I could at least have found something that provided a little more coverage and didn’t leave me feeling so exposed.
The idea of walking through an office where everyone was dressed smartly, wearing a white floral mini dress was an absolute nightmare and I realised that I only had a few minutes to make any changes. All I could think to do was to untie my waist length hair, shaking it out to at least cover some of my arms and attempting to make it look styled.
The doors opened to reveal a full office, with most of the team present at their desks and I gulped nervously. My dress felt as if it had actually shrunk in size since the beach now that I would be seen in it by people that I had worked with and I had to remind myself that I had bigger things to worry about with being called to come here than my attire.
JJ’s heels clicked on the polished floor as she entered the reception, her professional appearance clashing horribly with the casual style of my low top converses and I tried not to feel intimidated.
“Alice! I know that I said we wanted to see you again soon, but this is a little crazy.” She breezed as she approached me with a warm smile and I tried to force myself to relax. “Hotch is just finishing a call and he’ll be out to meet you.” She explained, before her gaze fell onto my outfit and I felt myself physically become stiff under her scrutiny. “You look pretty!”
“Oh, thanks. I was just on the beach. I’ve already worn all of my work clothes so, um, this is all I have?” I offered, shifting awkwardly and she smiled sympathetically at me.
“We’ve all been called in at unexpected times. I was literally collected from home in my pajamas once. You’ve got nothing to worry about.” She soothed, leaning closer to me as she spoke so that no one would overhear my concern and I let out a long breath in relief.
“Besides, I know that Hotch is just going to appreciate you being able to come in at such short notice. I hope you got to enjoy at least a little bit of your time off before we intruded?” She asked with an honest concern in her eyes and just as I opened my mouth to see if she could give me even the slightest hint of what to expect, Hotch stepped into the room.
“Alice. Thank you for coming so quickly.” He stated in his usual serious manner, reaching straight to shake my hand and I complied immediately, forcing a smile through my nerves. “I’ll try not to take up too much of your time. Let’s talk in my office.” He offered, opening the glass doors to the main office for me and I stepped through hesitantly.
Within approximately two steps of entering the space, I could already feel eyes on me and tried not to allow myself to be unnerved by the attention. The anxious voice in the back of my mind screamed that I was the most inappropriate looking member of staff to ever enter this office, but I forced myself to keep my head held high as Ricky had always preached.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that Spencer was watching me from his desk as if he’d been stopped in his tracks and I waved subtly at him, prompting him to hurriedly do the same back in a fluster. Morgan passed Hotch distractedly, before he noticed that I was following him with obvious surprise.
“Looking good, Poppins. Welcome back.” He muttered as he squeezed beside me, sneaking a charming smile and thanks to the combined warmth of the two men, once again I felt my nerves beginning to settle slightly.
Hotch encouraged me to take a seat in his office, before closing the door behind us and I felt as if I couldn’t think straight in the silence that followed. He settled into the seat opposite me, knitting his hands together on the desk between us and despite feeling before that I had reached the point where I could understand his expressions, his face at this moment was completely unreadable.
“For a start, I want to discuss what happened at the Twenty Nine Palms base.” He opened, his stern eyes studying my face for every minute reaction and though my heart sank at the suggested topic, I nodded back calmly.
“Whilst it can’t be denied that your actions resulted in saving a young girl's life, they were also unacceptably reckless. You demonstrated absolutely no regard for your own safety and jeopardised the reputation of the whole team. You are aware that we appreciate your support, but I’m not convinced that you realise we are legally and morally responsible for your wellbeing whilst you are under our service and that I would be personally held accountable for your death as a result of your irresponsible actions.” He lectured, his voice sounding even more severe than it had when I was in the ambulance and I felt my confidence crumbling with every word that he spoke.
It became clear that he had paused his speech to allow me the chance to explain myself and I cleared my throat to speak with a feeling of terror.
“I’m truly sorry for my actions, Sir. You are entirely right. I was reckless and selfish, and I didn’t consider how my behaviour would reflect on your team, and especially on you. I’m not going to make excuses. I just want you to know that I accept any and all consequences that you feel are appropriate.” I answered calmly, ensuring that I kept my tone calm and respectful, and he sighed as he studied me.
“I didn’t call you in here to punish you, Alice. This is a conversation, not a lecture. What I aim to understand is why an agent with no field experience, or any personal stake in the case, felt that they had no choice other than to risk their own life to save a child who they’d never met?” He clarified, his entire demeanour remaining unchanged even as he moved to a gentler tactic of questioning and I chewed on my lip.
It took a few moments for me to consider how best to answer this, but eventually I decided that I respected this team as a whole too much to lie. I prepared myself for a conversation that I knew would likely change his opinion of me permanently, but assured myself that honesty was a necessity at this point.
“When I was fifteen years old, my mother was abducted.” I began, glancing down at my hands as I spoke to avoid the intensity of his gaze. “It took four months for her to be found and when she came home, she was a different person. I never saw the mother that went missing again.” I paused, clearing my throat to keep the emotion from my voice before continuing.
“Three years later, a girl at my university went missing. She wasn’t the first, but the stakes were high as all of the others had been found murdered. I obsessed over everything that my mother had survived to come home and I couldn’t imagine how awful it would be to endure that at just eighteen years old. So, I began looking into the case and after a while of digging, I compiled enough information to anonymously assist law enforcement in safely recovering the missing girl. I realised then that I had the skills to make a difference to the world and I kept going, one missing person at a time, until Interpol found me.”
“You were given a choice between conviction, or working for them?” Hotch asked knowingly, as if he’d seen this very situation many times before and I recalled the recent conversation that I’d had with Penelope about hackers frequently being recruited through their questionable activities. I nodded slowly in response, deciding that this wasn’t the time to divulge any further information about the circumstances of my hiring.
“I didn’t join this field by choice. It was never the plan for my life. Don’t get me wrong, I always wanted to help people. I actually trained to become a psychiatrist, like my dad, but a job like this had never even been on my radar. Yet, here I am.” I explained, shrugging awkwardly as I realised that this sounded like I was ungrateful for the mercy that I was shown and I tried to be more careful with my wording when I spoke again.
“When I was standing in front of that building, watching the smoke pour out of it, all I could think about was how my mother told me that she spent every minute of every day that she was in captivity praying to come home. I could just imagine Amanda doing the same thing, hoping with everything she had that someone would save her and I was right there.” I stopped as frustration seeped into my voice, allowing myself to regain control so that I could resume my explanation.
“I knew that there was a chance that she was still alive and I felt like everything that had happened, all of the crazy unplanned situations that had led me to being there at that exact time were so that I could save her. It sounds insane, but it was like my legs moved before I had even decided what I was going to do. For the first time in my career, I trusted my team, this team to have my back and with all due respect, Sir, it was the right thing to do.” I finally finished my rant, forcing myself to meet his eyes to allow him to see my sincerity and I was shocked to find that his face was filled with understanding, causing me to realise that he was already filling in the blanks between my words.
“You said that this was the first time that you felt this way about your team. You shouldn’t be working with people that you can’t rely on. In our line of work, we are forced to face horrors that most people can’t even begin to imagine. The people around you should be your anchor in the storm.” Hotch advised, causing my eyes to become watery and I sniffed back my emotions, desperate not to cry in front of him. “You have options, Alice.”
“What options? Prison?” I scoffed, recalling my conversation with Shepard with a flinch.
Though I had thought in detail about leaving Interpol many times since my recruitment, I knew in a serious light that it was merely a fantasy and nothing more. Without my employment to them, I was considered as nothing more than a threat to security and returning to normal civilian life was no longer something that I could consider.
“Join our team.” Hotch offered, causing my mouth to drop open in shock and I noticed the corners of his lips twitch slightly upward at my reaction.
“It’s clear that you are neither happy, nor valued at Interpol. You have already proven the difference that you could make across multiple cases and the entire team have agreed that you make an excellent addition.” He elaborated, listing reasons that I struggled to even associate with myself and I couldn’t seem to form a response, as I stuttered in the silence.
“But, I-Sir, we just discussed how I jeopardised this team. I don’t mean to seem rude, or ungrateful because I absolutely am not, but I fail to see how I’ve given you the impression that I would make a suitable field agent. You already have Penelope for technical support, so I’m not sure what else you could need me for here.” I pointed out, hardly able to wrap my head around the sudden detour that this conversation had taken and found myself baffled at the very concept of him offering to employ me.
“When your team brought you for the Valeno case, you showed potential that they were purposefully dismissive of. After you left, Gideon suggested that I speak to you about a position within the BAU. Unfortunately, at the time we didn’t have the available resources to do this. Due to the recent successes of this team, we’ve been granted the budget to expand and I would be foolish to ignore a candidate who has already contributed to that success. You are a good fit and the first choice of every member in this unit.” He presented, completely disregarding my concerns and when I looked at him with confusion, he sighed.
“I have discussed the recent incident with Gideon and we share the opinion that with the correct mentoring and the support of a team that believes in your worth, you could be an exceptional field agent.” He divulged, causing me to raise my brows impossibly higher in surprise.
It was bizarre enough that Hotch wanted me to join the team, but finding out that Gideon had been the instigator for this offer blew what remained of my psyche to pieces and Hotch cleared his throat to regain my attention from my inner turmoil.
“The offer would, of course, be conditional. It would be based on your own commitment to overcoming your experiences. None of us are immune to personal biases and each of us have elements of our pasts that make certain cases more challenging for us than the others. However, we rely on each other to hold us accountable, and have all learned to be objective and to know our limits. If you think this is something that you can also undertake, then there is a place here for you. As long as you want it.” Hotch clarified, causing me to stare back at him in blatant disbelief.
“I-I honestly don’t know what to say.” I stuttered, fiddling with my hair anxiously and Hotch cracked a rare smile at me. “It isn’t as simple for me as just changing state. My life is in France now. I’ve already left my mum behind once in England. I’d also have to renounce my dual nationality and become an American citizen.” I thought aloud, considering the enormity of the decision before me and Hotch nodded in understanding.
“Can I have some time to think about it?” I asked nervously, unsure of what else to say and Hotch seemed completely unsurprised by my reaction, as if he’d actually been expecting it.
“Of course. It’s a serious decision that you aren’t expected to make right away. Take all of the time that you need.”
--⥈--
“Girl. Your life is crazy!” Ricky gasped, studying me with a fascinated expression and I had to laugh at his dramatic reaction, despite mostly agreeing with the sentiment. “You’re gonna say yes, right?”
I sighed deeply as I considered this question and the way that he considered me now revealed exactly how insane he thought I was for even needing to think about it. In order to avoid his prying eyes, I stood to start clearing away the takeaway boxes that littered my hotel room bed, but Ricky refused to be silenced.
“Alice. Honey. What are you doing?! Life at Interpol has been miserable for you since day one. You said it yourself. I can’t imagine anything there that could be worth turning this offer down for!” He scolded, staring at me in complete disbelief and I shook my head at his youthful attitude to things.
“It’s more complicated than that. I never planned to work in this sector at all, much less as an FBI agent!” I explained, still struggling to process the fact that this was even an option that was open to me. It felt as if it had come from nowhere and I was already overwhelmed with the mere concept of making such a serious life decision.
“This isn’t just a job that we’re talking about here. It’s a completely different life. I need to be sure that I can handle it, before I move away from everything that I know. I’d hardly ever get to see mum and Roger.” I clarified, struggling to make him understand the severity of the situation.
“You never visit your mama anyway! I should know. I overhear Maji talking to her about it enough.” He groaned, only causing me to feel even worse about the idea of moving even further away from her.
“Besides, if you took it then you’d be living right near me and there isn’t any better benefit than that!” He added, posing across the bed as if he were the most important factor in the proposal and I chuckled at him with fondness. He sighed at my lack of enthusiasm, before dropping to a more serious tone.
“The most important thing for all of us is your happiness. You’d be crazy to stay somewhere that is making your whole existence taste like bad Aloo Gobi. And you deserve better than that! You deserve for your life to always be like Maji’s cooking, full of love and happiness.” He described, seeming as if he’d distracted himself along the way and he glanced back down at his plastic container of curry with disdain.
“You realise that you have a gift for being able to relate literally anything to food, right?” I remarked playfully, observing him with amazement and he shrugged carelessly.
“Food is one of the most enjoyable things that sustains us. It’s important.” He argued passionately and I couldn’t think of a single point to dispute his statement with, having to allow him the pleasure of being correct. “Fortunately, Mumbai Gardens is able to provide an almost authentic experience, right here in the heart of Virginia. A good meal can heal many things, you know. Even the stress of your biggest ever life decision.”
“That’s high praise coming from you. Could it pass the home test though, do you think?” I queried with curiosity as I disposed of the remaining trash with the Mumbai Gardens logo on it and he scoffed as if I’d asked something utterly ridiculous.
“Not a chance! Even Mama would be able to tell you that it wasn’t completely correct. You know, she’s actually been with Maji long enough now to have better cooking taste than some of my other actual Indian friends.” He revealed, showing his love for his step mom, who happened to be my paternal aunt Heather, clear in his voice.
I couldn’t withhold a wide grin as I thought of my aunts, both filled with a warmth that radiated even in my memories. Heather and Ricky’s mum, Nabhitha, had been married for almost ten years now and were the main reason that I still had any faith in true love. They had done an admirable job of raising Ricky together, with Heather always treating him as if he was her biological son and I was endlessly proud of them. Thanks to them, Ricky had grown into the confident, funny teenager that I loved. Their blissful blended family gave me hope for my own future.
“I just had an idea.” Ricky breezed, sitting up particularly straight as if he could barely contain his enthusiasm and I turned back to face him with interest. “If you take this job, we could totally rent a place together! I could be your stylist extraordinaire, in-house councillor and professional Indian chef.” He suggested, his eyes gleaming with excitement and I scoffed loudly at the idea.
“Absolutely not. I’ve already got enough on my plate, without considering parenting you, Ricky.” I laughed, wincing at even the thought of dealing with his dramatics on a daily basis and he gasped at my refusal, seeming as if he could never have expected me to refuse his generous offer. “You can be as offended as you like, but I still don’t have the energy to deal with a college kid in my space. I’m not gonna be your easy way out of student housing. Pick some other teenagers to live with already.”
“Fine. I was offering you a lifestyle of sheer luxury, but I guess I’ll just have to take my fabulous self somewhere that I’ll be better appreciated.” He announced, acting as if he were hurt by my denial, before quickly softening back into a smile barely a few seconds later. “You should definitely think some more about taking the job though, queen. You deserve a fresh start.”
“We’ll see.” I conceded with a chuckle, desperate to simply end the conversation. “Now, which film do you want to rent?”

Mistletoe Business
“Hey, want to help me get my parents off my back about not having a date?”
→ Pairing: Hongseok x Reader
→ Genre: Fluff
→ Words: 2K
→ Contains: cheesy cliches; implied smut at the end.
→ A/n: so, we might have gotten a little carried away with this story as you can see by the word count lol. I hope it is worth the wait (sorry for posting it later than usual) and we hope you guys like it!
“Hey, want to help me get my parents off my back about not having a date?”
“What?” you asked wide eyed in disbelief
“Hear me out” Hongseok straightened his back, looking like he was talking business “You said that you will spend holidays alone in your house, right? And my parents nag me every damn year when I come back home alone for the holidays. We just have to hold hands and hug once in a while”
He ended his argument with an unpretentious shrug.
“I don’t know, Hongseok…” You said, not really convinced. “Are you sure this is a good idea?”
“There will be free food, and my mom is an amazing cook”
“Fine, you got me there. You better get me in a food coma” you rolled your eyes, laughing at your coworker.
You and Hongseok have been working together for a couple of years now, and you can say he’s your favorite person to work with, but your relationship with him ends there, the only few times you two hung out outside your job was at office gatherings at bars after working hours. Nevertheless, you considered him a nice friend, and the thought of not spending christmas alone was very tempting.
And that’s how you got yourself in the current situation you’re in right now.
“Mom!” Hongseok exclaimed, passing through the front door, carrying both his suitcase and yours’ “I’m home”
You walked right behind him, wishing you could actually hide yourself from doing this, a pinch of regret twisting your guts. Soon his parents show up, receiving him with a big warm hug.
“Mom, Dad,” his step aside, putting you in the spotlight “This is my girlfriend, Y/N.”
They both received you with the same enthusiastic hug.
“It’s so good to meet you, y/n” his mom said “Finally I don’t have to worry if he’s too lonely in the city.”
You really didn’t know how to answer, so you just offered a sympathetic smile, pretty sure that your cheeks were bright pink.
“Come on, darling,” his dad intervened, probably seeing your flustered face “Let the kids get some rest, they had a long trip”
“Right” she answered him, laughing softly before redirecting herself to Hongseok “You two can stay in your room, ok? Your brother and his wife will stay in his’.”
Then it hit you. They think you two are a couple, of course you will share one single room with him. Probably share a bed too. Oh damn.
He hugged his dad and kissed his mom's cheeks, wishing them good night.
“Thank you for having me.” You enunciated before following Hongseok further into the house.
You followed him quietly as he walked without looking back. He only broke the silence once you two were inside his room, behind closed doors.
“You look cute when you blush” His words were pure mockery, but the smirk on his face made you question if that was a flirt.
“Shut up” You answered back, pushing his shoulder lightly "or I will show everyone in the office pictures of all these boy band posters in the wall"
'I have nothing to hide, you can ask me anything about them and I will proudly answer you, like the fanboy I am" he laughed.
And then the room fell silent.
You say down on the bed as he carefully left the luggage next to his nightstand. The room was really a place you could see Hongseok growing up in. The light blue walls and orange accents here and there really matched his personality. The big mirror next to the wardrobe was something that definitely screamed Hongseok.
"So, I know we didn't think this before, I totally forgot that sleeping together is a thing" he broke the silence, laughing nervously "I can sleep on the floor and you can have my bed."
"That's not fair, you are the one that drove for hours, you deserve the bed" you replied.
"I won't let you sleep on the floor." he shrugged casually.
"We can try and share the bed though." You said, and he just stared at you, pondering whether it was a good idea or not. "Will you be a total creep and jump on me while I'm asleep?"
"Of course not!" He scoffed.
'Then sharing the bed it is."
Next morning you woke up feeling so warm it was almost suffocating. The smell of clean sheets was nice, but the musky scent was what made you hum in satisfaction. And that's when you remembered you were sharing a bed with Hongseok.
You opened your eyes and realized you were spooning him, his whole back pressed against your chest and your arm wrapping around his torso.
You slowly pulled back and thanked whatever force of nature that allowed you to wake before him and save yourself from this embarrassment.
Or so you thought.
"Little did I know that you were going to be the creep jumping on me in the middle of the night" his hoarse morning voice made you jump in surprise, which got him laughing a little too loudly.
"It's not my fault I'm a sleep cuddler!" You said in your defense, hiding your face under your covers.
"It's ok, y/n, I know I'm irresistibly cuddly, you can admit" he grinned sheepishly
"In your dreams" you rolled your eyes.
At breakfast, you two were the last ones to join the family on the table, and he introduced you to his brother and sister in law just like the night before to your parents, but this time he snaked one arm around your waist, gently pulling you closer to him. His parents giggle proved that the blush on your cheeks was very evident.
Later you joined him and his mom in the kitchen to help prepare the Christmas Eve feast.
“You look cute in an apron.” You teased him, snapping a picture with your phone and giggling.
“You won’t be laughing once you taste my wonderful mashed potatoes.” He said proudly.
“I didn’t know you were a cook” you said.
“You never cooked for her?” his mom intervened. “I taught you better than that!” She slapped his arm lightly.
You sneaked your phone again, this time taking the cutest picture of Hongseok and his mom, standing shoulder to shoulder, laughing softly as they cooked together.
The whole family dinner was so pleasant and fun, you got the chance to know so much more about him, how he was growing up and the way his family was so proud of him. You felt very welcome too, all of them being so nice to you, which made you feel a little guilty for lying to them like that.
Skinship became natural for you two as the day went by, and that’s why you were sitting side-by-side on the couch, holding his hand, as the family gathered around the fireplace and told more stories - you particularly loved the ones his brother told about him being a little brat as a kid.
“I guess you didn’t change that much” you teased, and he flashed you his tongue “just proved my argument.” you finished and everyone laughed.
“Mom...” His brother said a little louder, catching everyone’s attention “did you purposefully hang those mistletoes above the couch?”
That moment you looked up and noticed the plant above you and Hongseok.
“I guess my trap worked.” she giggled. You could see that he got so much from his mother. “You guys know the rules.”
“Don’t think you’re safe” Hongseok tried to divert attention, pointing above his brother and his wife “you have one too”
They proceed to share a cute peck, and everyone awed in fondness.
“You two are not safe either” his brother replied back.
Hongseok looked at you, who tried to not look panicked.
“You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.” he whispered and squeezed your hand in reassurance.
“It’s okay” you whispered back
You raised your hand and gently cupped his cheek, directing him to get closer to you.Your lips touched softly and butterflies were partying around your stomach. It ended as quickly as it started, and after pulling back you two just stared at each other for a while, shy smiles mirrored in both of your faces. If you were blushing before, right now you must be as red as a strawberry.
“So cute.” his brother teased.
“Shut up.” Hongseok snapped back, and again everyone laughed.
You two shared a secret look, and you caught yourself biting your bottom lip, savoring the tingling sensation that lingered from his kiss.
The night followed easy going and light, hugs and gifts exchanged at midnight, finishing with a round of hot cocoa and gingerbread cookies for everybody. After you all wished goodnight to each other, everyone went away to their respective bedrooms, including you two.
You entered first, trying to figure out how to not act embarrassed around him now that you two were alone and there was clearly a little elephant in the room.
“Hey, y/n” You had no time alone with your thoughts before he called you. “I have something I wanna try”
“Okay…” you turned to face him, not sure on what to do. You observed him approaching, hiding something behind his back.
“Do you trust me?” he asked and you nodded in response “close your eyes”
You obliged, but a couple of seconds later he told you that you could open them again. He was standing closer to you, his hand raised above the both of you, and at the tip of his fingers, a mistletoe strand. Your immediate reaction was a soft laugh.
You stared at him, raising eyebrows and smiling, silently asking him if that was serious.
“You kind of left me wanting for more.” He smirked, biting his bottom lip.
“Oh well, we’re under a mistletoe, we have no choice.” you shrugged, half smiling.
He lowered his arm only to have both of them snaking around your waist, pulling your bodies closer. You immediately wrapped yours around his neck, neither one of you wasting any more time apart.
He kissed you passionately, his strong grip almost lifting you off the ground, his lips hungry for yours’. He kissed you like he meant to do that for longer than the couple of hours since the last one. And if you were being honest you might have wanted it before too.
As you two separated, your foreheads remained pressed together and his grip on you didn’t falter.
“So…” you said “What is that supposed to mean?”
“Well,” he squeezed your waist “I guess it means I liked a little too much pretending you’re my girlfriend.”
“I’m not having a hard time myself either.” you replied, leaning closer and stealing a peck.
“I won’t mind keeping up with this a little longer.” he said.
“Me neither, as long as the kisses are this good.”
“If you think the kisses are good wait until you see the rest” he flashed you another smirk
“Don’t ruin it!” you laughed, slapping his chest
“I’m serious about the other part though” he continued, this time it was his turn to steal another peck “I like the idea of you as my girlfriend. What do you think?”
“Well, why don’t we enjoy pretending a little longer and enjoy ourselves right now, and our future selves can have this conversation once we’re back to the city? So our present selves can continue making out?” you raised one eyebrow suggestively.
“Sounds like a good idea to me” He agreed.
You two started kissing again, this time he grabbed your thighs, and easily picked you up on his lap, only to lay you down on his bed, quickly climbing on top of you.
“Merry Christmas to us” he opened a mischievous grin.
You kissed him passionately one more time, like you couldn’t get enough of him.
“Merry Christmas, Hongseok.”

Ok, so I had to do this after reading @justasimplesinner ‘s absolutely adorable and precious h/cs for Arkham Knight Riddler meeting his s/o’s family for the first time. I mean, AK!Eddie being happy? Having some sort of family? It hits me right in the feels 😭
But I was inspired to write something similar for Telltale Riddler and his s/o but with a twist. I mean, it’s already going to be quite different considering how Telltale Riddler is, but I’m taking things a little further and getting a bit personal. Since I self-ship with him, I figured, why not turn these h/cs into self-insert ones?
Basically, Telltale Riddler meeting my family for the first time on Christmas.
The h/cs will reflect what the reality of my family is like but I won’t get, like, too personal. Y’all don’t need to know everything.
Pre-headcanons warnings to be fair:
There is a little but of smut at the end. Nothing explicit but it’s a little bit spicy.
These are self-insert headcanons, not reader-insert ones
This is an age-gap pairing since I’m 33 years old and Telltale Riddler is 60 years old.
Anyway, let’s head on into these h/cs for Telltale Riddler meeting my folks for the first time (and that seems awkward as hell to write but hey, I’m fictosexual so....🤷♀️)
There is a little bit of smut at the end. Nothing explicit but it’s definitely a little spicy.
It’s the first Christmas spent with Eddie since becoming a couple, and it’s also kind of an awkward time because family, you know? And, well, my parents don’t know I’m dating anyone...let alone THE Riddler.
It’s going to be a challenge getting them to accept me dating someone nearly twice my age (I’m 33 and Edward’s 60, but damn, did he age like fine wine or what?) But revealing that it’s the goddamn Riddler?
So, yeah, I’m freaking out but I also realize that I have to tell them eventually because it’s only fair, for one, and keeping it a secret for a long time would just make things worse if -- or more realistically, when -- my parents found out on their own.
Plus, I’m not ashamed or afraid to date Edward. He treats me much differently than he treats most other people, and I want my parents to know that, yeah, he’s Riddler, a criminal mastermind but honestly, he treats me better than any guy has and I’m actually happy.
Edward isn’t nervous but he’s concerned because he doesn’t want to complicate things between my parents and me, doesn’t want to bring unnecessary drama and angst into my life. He can handle people disliking him -- hating him -- but he doesn’t want the only person he’s ever truly cared for to have a damaged relationship with her family because of him.
But we discuss it and decide it’s better to just go ahead and do it. Rip off the band aid and get the pain out of the way as fast as possible, so to speak. Whatever happens, happens, and hopefully it’s nothing (too) upsetting.
I call my parents and tell them I’m coming to visit for Christmas, and I reveal -- while my hands are shaking and my heart is pounding from the anxiety consuming me -- that I want to bring my boyfriend.
Oh, I have a boyfriend? For how long? How did we meet? What’s he like? What’s his name? Why the wait to tell them about him?
I know it wouldn’t go over well to just show up at my parents home hanging off of the goddamn Riddler’s arm, like, “Oh, hey, my boyfriend is a criminal genius, don’t ya know?”
So, I approach telling them over the phone the truth slowly, cautiously. I say his name is Edward and we met kind of by accident and we’ve been dating for a good portion of the year. It’s my first Christmas with him, actually.
Wait, it’s been that long and I never told my them?! What the hell?!
Needless to say, they are baffled and also concerned about this news.
I explain the awkward but less, uh, shocking news that he is an older man, and I was worried they’d be upset about that. They ask how old Edward is and I hesitate, wondering if I should lie and say he’s, like, in his early 50s because he could easily pass for that age. Hell, even I thought he was in his early 50s (or even very late 40s) when I first met him.
However, honesty is the best policy, and this is not even the “bad” news yet.
I say that he just turned 60 years old this year in a calm, cool, casual tone, like I’m talking about the weather and not revealing to my parents that I’m dating a guy who is my dad’s age.
There is silence and I internally panic because if they’re angered or appalled by this, they’re not going to handle finding out who Edward is well at all.
They are surprised, a little worried for my wellbeing because they think Edward’s some perverted Sugar Daddy to me. They don’t say it like that but it’s heavily implied.
I explain that’s not the case at all, that he’s actually very sweet towards me.
My folks decide to go along with this bit of news because hey, I’m 33 years old. I’m an adult. I can date an older man if I want.
Then comes the “fun” part, which is revealing to them what Edward does for a living.
I laugh nervously, and Edward, who has been patiently sitting beside me on the couch, realizes what I’m about to tell my parents. He watches me closely, hoping this doesn’t turn into a disaster for my sake.
“Yeah, so, Edward, yeah...Edward is...well, he’s, um...Well, he’s, he’s a genius. Like a tech genius, great with electrical engineering, computers. And uh, his job, his profession, his, um, career? Yeah, that’s...well, he’s...”
I take a deep breath and prepare for the worst.
“He’s The Riddler, one of Gotham’s...elite....masterminds.”
The silence on the other end of the phone is so terrifying that I feel like I’m going to faint from how anxious I am. Edward places a hand on my knee as a means of comfort, still wanting to give me some space to breathe and calm down.
My parents aren’t...thrilled, to say the least. I’m dating a fucking criminal mastermind?! I’m dating RIDDLER? THE RIDDLER? What the goddamn fresh hell is this?!
I start crying because I’m so stressed about this, and Edward moves closer so he can put his arm around me. He feels bad, he really does, and it shows in his troubled expression, but there’s not much he can do. It’s not like we can take this back and say, “Oh, hey, just kidding!” No, this was the truth and now we were dealing with the consequences.
I manage to get my parents to calm down long enough so I can get a word in. I get up off the couch and walk to another room to speak to them alone.
I tell them I know it’s not the most pleasant news to hear, and I know it seems awful, but it’s the first time I have been with a man and he’s treated me well. Like, really well. It’s not just the nice gifts or expensive dinners. Edward does genuinely care about me. I don’t feel like a “booty call,” he doesn’t ignore me, he doesn’t threaten me, he’s never abused me and never will. He’s not the same person with me as he is with some other people. I wouldn’t be dating him otherwise.
It takes some more convincing, but once I get it through to my parents that yes, I’m actually happy and yes, I’m safe and yes, Edward is a very doting boyfriend, they decide to meet him at Christmas. I know they will still have concerns and may be a bit cold to Edward at first, but I hope they would see what I see.
The day arrives and I’m a nervous wreck. Edward is worried for me. He assures me that everything will be ok, and I want to believe but I’m still scared.
Deep down, he thinks maybe dating me is a bad idea -- not because he doesn’t love me but because he feels like he could damage my relationship with my parents. However, he doesn’t bring this up as he doesn’t want me to be even more upset than I already am.
Edward had brought with him some gifts for my parents and my grandma (she was staying with them, too). He brought the most most beautiful bouquet of flowers and a necklace for my grandma, a very lovely diamond bracelet for my mom, and a high-quality (aka expensive) watch for my dad.
I had to dress to impress and by that, dress in things Edward had given me to give my parents more visual proof that he was taking care of me. But I was careful not to overdo it. I didn’t want my parents to think I was his piece of...eye candy.
When we arrive, my parents greet us at the door, giving me a much warmer welcome than they give to Edward. They’re not rude to him, but they look uneasy, even a little irritated.
Edward, being the charming bastard he is, keeps his calm and showcases his gentlemanly side. It’s genuine because he IS quite the gentleman as I have learned, but I don’t know if it will be enough to convince my parents to accept him.
They appreciate the gifts, seem a little caught off guard by the pricey but very lovely things Edward bought them. They also notice I’m wearing a dress that cost a pretty penny and jewelry just as extravagant. But none of it’s gaudy.
Basically, I don’t look like Riddler’s trophy girlfriend.
Edward is courteous and charming, which seems to help my mom relax a bit. My dad still looks rather tense, though.
My grandma, being 90 and having frequent issues with memory, doesn’t remember who Edward actually is. My parents told her but she had forgotten and it was probably for the best.
My grandma is impressed with Edward, finds him to be a proper, handsome gentleman type. She also was very grateful for the gifts he brought her.
Edward is very patient with my grandma, which I know isn’t easy due to her memory problems. But he is very relaxed, behaving pretty much like he does around me.
We all have dinner and chat, and the tension in the air lightens. My parents even laugh at a few humorous comments from Edward. He thanks my parents for allowing him to visit and for the wonderful dinner, and offers to help my parents clean up.
Good. This gives my parents time alone with Edward which, as nerve-wracking as it is for me, is something that needs to happen. They need a one-on-one with my boyfriend...and hopefully it didn’t turn into a mess.
I stay with my grandma and act like everything’s fine as I anxiously wait to find out what my parents will ultimately think of Edward.
They are upfront with him once they’re alone with him, asking him if he’s putting up some kind of act or if this is all really him. They also ask if he genuinely cares for me or if he’s just using me because I’m “young and pretty.” They don’t hide their feelings, my parents, and they are concerned for my safety and happiness above all else. They NEED to know that Edward is good to me despite being Riddler. They can’t tell me who to be with but it would put their mind at ease if they were assured I was in good hands.
Edward is honest with them. He isn’t putting on a front. He is gentlemanly by nature with people he likes and respects, and he’s a bit old-fashioned in some ways anyway due to his age. He doesn’t fake his feelings for anyone, and while he does want my parents to accept him as my boyfriend, he knows it’s not an easy choice. He also tells them they have every right to reject him, and he won’t hold a grudge towards them about it if they do.
If anything, he’s earned scorn more than kindness due to how he’s lived his life, and that’s fair. He accepts that.
But then he explains that no, I am not eye candy for him. He’s not a play boy looking for a “good time.” He’s serious about me and feels things towards me he’s never felt--never expected to feel. I’m the one thing in his dark and violent life that is bright and soothing, even though he’s done nothing in his life to deserve such a sweet and caring partner.
He tells them that I’m always protected and cared for, and he has made arrangements to ensure I’m still protected and cared for if -- or more realistically, when something happens to him.
Being Riddler’s girlfriend has its perks. No one messes with me, that’s for sure, because they know I’m important to him, and they know what he is willing to do to keep me safe.
As scary as that is to hear, my parents find some relief in that. Yes, Edward is The Riddler, a criminal mastermind who strikes fear into many. However, he takes care of what is precious to him -- and not much is precious to him. Actually, nothing is save for me. I bring him a lot of joy and much-needed peace, and he’d give his life to protect me.
I deserve to be happy, he tells my parents, because I am a good person unlike him, and he works hard to make sure I know I’m loved and cared for, that I’m good enough and that he has no intentions of leaving me or cheating on me for someone else.
Edward also assures my parents that, should they need anything, he can provide. Of course, he won’t force his help on them but he won’t ever turn them away either. He looks out for those that mean a lot to me, who are close to me, regardless of who they are and how they feel about him. That is a promise he makes to my parents, too.
He also comments on how they have been taking care of my grandma pretty much on their own for a couple years now, and he knows from what he has observed and from things I’ve told him that it is a very exhausting duty. It’s an admirable one, though, for sure, and he respects my parents for being good people.
He sees where I get my kind nature, he tells them.
He says that he can pay for live-in help for them, like a live-in nurse, someone who can help take care of my grandma and let my parents have a break every now and again. Also, should she need anything that isn’t covered by her insurance, he will cover the costs.
Same goes for my parents, who aren’t the healthiest people in their old age (Edward has the regenerative properties of the LOTUS virus on his side -- they don’t). He doesn’t tell them that obviously, that they’re unhealthy, but he says should they need any expenses covered for treatments, medication, etc., he can provide.
Because he is THAT serious about me.
My parents are, to say the least, much more confident in my relationship with Edward now that they’ve talked with him one on one. They give him their blessing, so to speak, to be my boyfriend, and appreciate his generosity. They do ask for help with live-in aid for my grandma, and Edward says pick who they want and he’ll pay whatever insurance won’t cover.
I am beyond relieved that my parents have decided to accept Edward, and am so grateful to him for offering his help to them...because they need it and deserve it.
He tells me it’s no trouble at all, that whatever makes me happy makes him happy, and he’s more than willing to aid those that are important to me.
Edward and I stay over Christmas Eve so we can spend more time with my family on Christmas Day. We get the guest room which has a small bed, so we’re “forced” to get close.
Of course, I can’t resist tempting him even now, and he doesn’t turn me down. I do warn him that we have to be careful because, hey, my folks are here in this house and I’m not the quietest lover.
“Oh, don’t worry,” he tells me with a smirk. “I came prepared for any eventuality.”
Needless to say, I need to be gagged because Edward makes sure I have a Merry Fucking Christmas -- literally -- and also makes sure I know how much he both loves and desires me.
We decide to leave out the whole Dom/Sub aspect of our relationship in regards to my parents.
We also don’t tell them about how I call Edward, “Daddy” almost any other time 👀👀👀👀💦💦💦💦💦💦
My mom also refuses to believe he’s 60 years old because he’s so good-looking 😄

AAAhh I'm the anon that requested twst boys meeting their girlfriends family - it was so good and awesome 💕💕💕💕💕 I'm glad you enjoyed writing it. If you don't mind may I request the same for Azul, Rook and Jack please?
Hi, Luv! Likewise, I’m glad you enjoyed the first part, and I’m ecstatic to hear that you want more! Here you go, Anon! Sorry that this took so long!
Part 1 can be found here! https://twisted-wonderland-insanity.tumblr.com/post/620318557803282432/yay-new-tw-blog-can-i-ask-hqs-for-mallets-leona
Meeting their Fem! (S/O)’s Family Pt. 2 (ft. Azul Ashengrotto, Rook Hunt, and Jack Howl)
~Azul Ashengrotto~
Your father is immediately giving Azul the stink eye as soon as he walks through the door and into your home. Given his suit, his cheerful smirk, and the overall devious aura about him, it’s no wonder if any adults in your family think he’s a Mafioso.
However, Azul has a plan ready to act upon just for this occasion - he’s willing to prove to them that he’s the one for you, after all!
Like Vil, his biggest strength is his sharp tongue. Being what some consider a ‘conman,’ Azul knows how to sweeten his words to win anyone over. How do you think he got his contracts, after all?
However, he will show more compassion to your family than any of his clients. He’ll give you mother an endless amount of compliments, and even bring a gift for both of your parents as thanks for inviting him over.
Even if he finds children a bit annoying, he’s willing to play with any younger siblings that you have. Most notably, he could offer his coat and hat to them to dress up in, calling them a ‘young man’ or a ‘little lady’ if they accept.
If you have any older siblings, he’s adept to strike a civil conversation with them. It doesn’t matter what the topic is about, or his knowledge on it, Azul will listen to whatever they’re interested in if it means that they’ll like him more.
If your father tries to bombard him with questions, he’s not worried - at least, not visibly at least. On the inside, he is DEFINITELY nervous about whether or not he succeeds at winning him over, but he tries to hide it in his facade. Nonetheless, he is still very courteous during his conversation with your parents.
“Thank you Mr. and Mrs. (L/N) for inviting me to this amazing dinner tonight. It was a pleasure getting to know you all, and I hope that I can see you again in the near future. Your daughter is an amazing woman, and I hope that you’ll accept my love and consideration for her just as I do with yours.”
When the night is over, Azul has won over most of your family members. Most of them will set aside his appearance (all accept your father, go figures) and see him as a charming and sweet gentleman. This all comes at a cost of Azul’s stress and adrenaline increasing due to how much he had to do to get their favor. However, no need to worry! Jade and Floyd MAY have been looking over you two from the outside in case something went wrong.
~Rook Hunt~
Ironically enough, Rook is actually pretty excited to meet your family, wanting to know how amazing they are if they were able to bring you into the world. Just make sure that you tell your boyfriend to maybe tone it down a bit.
Spoiler alert, he forgets about this precaution, and your family is put off by his overtly cheerful behavior at first. Your father in particular feels like he’s putting a facade to hide the fact that he might not be worthy of you.
Don’t worry, though. Rook might not have a strong tongue like Vil, but he does indeed do his best to follow by example. For your sake, he will try his best to tone it down for the remainder of the night.
Yes, Rook might be a bit perturbed if any siblings you have decide to poke fun at his haircut or his personality, but will nonetheless feign ignorance to that kind of behavior. He’s a gentleman, after all, so no ruckus will be made during the dinner table.
Did I forget to mention that Rook took his daily dose of respect women juice before heading to your place? Because if I didn’t, then now you know! Like Vil, he treats all the women in your family with utter respect and compassion, and might even befriend your mother with his wellness tips and compliments.
Your father, unsurprisingly, is the most difficult person for him to please. However, unlike some people who find it annoying, Rook understands where his overprotectiveness comes from. Like himself, your father can’t help but dote on you constantly and make sure you’re alright.
Luckily for Rook, he uses his greatest strength of all to try and persuade your father - his use of pathos.
“Monsieur (L/N), it was an absolute honor meeting you tonight. Before I leave, I would like to leave an appraisal. (S/O) is mon seul vrai amour - my muse and inspiration! Her smile brightens up whatever room she is in, and I am eternally grateful that she has chosen me as her beloved partner. S'il vous plaît, Monsieur (L/N), my only hope is that I’m willing to protect her forevermore just as you have done so your entire life.”
When he leaves, your family is somewhat mixed about him. Some people find his personality as oddly charming and funny. Others, however, find Rook to be sketchy and too outlandish for you hello father dearest. But overall, he is pretty confident about tonight’s encounter and hopes to meet them again.
~Jack Howl~
Ok, let me be frank and say that your family might be intimidated and/or startled by Jack the first time they see him. With his resting scowl and enormous height, don’t be surprised when the first thing they think of him is “delinquent.”
Which is precisely why your father is immediately set on placing you guys on separate sides of the dinner table. This angers Jack to no end, seeing as though he never gave him a chance to prove himself as worthy.
Jack may not be the best for his words, but tonight he will try his best to appease your family through his actions. He has his mind set to one goal, and one goal only - making sure that your family approves of your relationship with him.
Does your mother need help setting up the table to washing the dishes after? He’ll quietly offer to do it, and if she consents, he will do so without any complaints.
With siblings, the best way to win them over is to play games with them. Despite his brute strength, he will try his best to make it easy for them just so that they can have fun. The best part about this? Any young siblings that he can carry on his shoulders will ABSOLUTELY love him if they do that! Albeit, he will have a blushing face afterward...
And then there was... your father. Oh dear King of Beasts, have mercy on his soul. As stated before, Jack’s not exactly the best at conveying his emotions through words as much as through actions, so if your dad starts to bombard him with question after question, chances are he might not even answer them all.
However, annoyed after seemingly being asked a hundred questions, he will stand up for the two of you with annoyance at your father. He can tell that his overprotectiveness is almost suffocating on you, and you deserve better than that! Most of all, he will not hesitate to say that directly at your father’s face.
“Listen, Mr. (L/N), all night long I have tried to prove myself to you because your daughter and I agreed it would be the right thing to do for our relationship. If I didn’t love (S/O), I wouldn’t have gone through this night hoping that it would be a success. Clearly, however, you don’t see that in me. And clearly, you don’t see that I’m good for (S/O)! I understand that you want what’s best for your daughter, but I also want you to see that she doesn’t want you breathing down her neck every five seconds! So please, give us a chance, if not for me, then for her!”
After that speech, all of your family is left in shock. After Jack leaves, he doesn’t know how your father reacts after. Would he be angry at your boyfriend, or unresentful? Would he question his parenting skills, or forbid you from seeing him for the next month? Whatever the case, Jack is content with what he said. Could he have been gentler with his words? Maybe. But he still said what he thought needed to be said, and he hopes that your dad takes his words into considerations.
Besides, chances are he did happen to win someone over that night. If not your mother, then perhaps your siblings.

because @gayunclejake did not get a gift exchange present! (It’s got some mr canis/basil sr poly nonsense going on i hope that is okay
--
“You’ve been seeing a lot of him,” Mr. Canis says.
Jake can’t read in his voice what he means to imply by this, but since he knows Canis and Will aren’t exactly best buds, he can sort of make assumptions. He’s just waved Will off, is watching the prince walk to his car from the safety of the doorway, and Mr. Canis has snuck up behind him. Or just walked. He doesn’t need to sneak, he’s just quiet naturally.
“Yeah,” Jake says, a little awkwardly. “I, uh. Guess I have.”
Mr. Canis just kind of looks at Jake, expression unreadable.
Jake feels the need to fill the silence. This is a pretty normal thing for him around Mr. Canis. All through his teen years, Mr. Canis could just look at him and pretty soon Jake would be spilling his guts. It’s something about the way the man will let you sit in your own thoughts for as long as it takes.
He’s not fourteen with a guilty conscience anymore, though. Oh, sure, he’s still got the guilty conscience, but there’s nothing Mr. Canis doesn’t already know. And Jake’s personal life is really none of the old man’s business, is it?
Except his mouth doesn’t seem to have gotten the we’re-grownups-now memo, and before he realizes it he’s saying, “We’re kind of dating.”
And now Mr. Canis shows some emotion. His eyes go, very briefly, wide, and his mouth twists itself out of its normal straight line into a much more complicated shape. He doesn’t say anything, still.
Jake’s traitor mouth starts babbling. He’s standing in the still-open doorway, the early-spring cold creeping in around him, and saying, “I know you don’t like him and I’m sorry and I don’t know what I’m thinking either. But he’s sad and lonely under that asshole front, you know? And I get loneliness. And guilt. And not being able to measure up to the kind of person you think you should be. And he’s trying to be better, now. Really trying, not just for Snow the way he was when he was trying to win her back. And I think I might be in love with him?”
He stops, because that last part was surprising on more than just a why-can’t-I-shut-up level. Is he in love with Will?
Yeah. Yeah he is.
Well shit. That complicates things.
“Jake,” Mr. Canis says. He reaches around Jake and pulls the front door shut. “You’re an adult. You can date whoever you want.”
“I know,” Jake says. Because he does. “I just… I respect you, y’know? You’re like a second dad, kind of.”
Mr. Canis’ cheeks go a little pink, barely. He might be smiling. After a minute he says, “I’m not upset. I’m worried. He might be trying to be better, but…”
“Yeah,” Jake says. “I know. But I mean. I’m not perfect, either.” He rubs the back of his neck. “What I’m really worried about, honestly? Is Snow.” He laughs, a little. “How am I ever gonna compete with that?”
Mr. Canis raises his eyebrows. “If he’s choosing you, is it a competition?”
“I mean, he wants to choose me,” Jake says. “But she’s woven into his everything. What if he doesn’t have a choice? How am I supposed to measure up against his literal reason for existence?” He hadn’t meant to say any of this. Honestly, he’s been avoiding thinking about it as much as possible.
Mr. Canis jerked his head in the direction of the kitchen, then started walking. Jake followed him, and they sat down at the table across from each other. Neither said anything. It was kind of uncomfortable. Jake started to shift in his chair.
“I don’t know if your mother would like me to tell you about this,” Mr. Canis says at long last. “Your father never wanted you to know.”
Jake bites his lip. On the one hand, he’s curious. On the other…
Mr. Canis seems to come to a decision. “Your father and I were involved. Romantically.”
Okay, of all the things Jake was expecting to hear, that was not it. “I— what? Dad cheated on mom? Mom knew?” How the hell is he supposed to— what? His dad, his perfect wonderful father, would never do something like that. He wouldn’t.
“No,” Mr. Canis said. “And yes. Your mother knew. She encouraged it, actually. Your father was in a relationship with both of us.”
Now Jake has a million questions. His dad was bi? Okay, cool, so’s Jake, that’s not a super huge deal. His mom knew? Also cool. His mom wanted him to, what? See other people? All right, that sort of also makes sense. Mom would want Dad to be happy more than anything. But dating two people at once?
Mr. Canis apparently sees most of this in his face. “It was a private relationship, and I’m not going to tell you the details. Your mother and I are better friends, I think, for having loved the same man. I’m only telling you because you’re worried about Snow.”
“What does that have to do with this?” Jake asks. He thinks he sort of gets it, but he wants Mr. Canis to say it clearly.
“A man can love two people at once,” Mr. Canis says. “And I am not saying you have to share him. If you aren’t comfortable, nobody can demand that you do that. But him loving Snow does not make his love for you any less real, any more than your mother or I invalidated your father’s feelings for the other.”
“Oh,” Jake says. “Yeah. I guess that makes sense.” It does. He’s going to need to think about that some, though.
Mr. Canis levers himself up from the kitchen table. “It won’t be easy,” he says. “No matter what shape the three of you end up taking.” He pats Jake on the shoulder a little awkwardly. “If you want it enough, though, to put in the work, you can have it.”
“Yeah,” Jake says, still lost in thought.
“You, ah,” Mr. Canis says. He’s standing in the doorframe now, apparently content to let Jake think about this knowledge bomb alone. “You can always talk to me about it. If you need to.”
“Yeah,” Jake says, and he gives Mr. Canis a smile. “I will. Thanks.”
That second father thing? Turns out it’s truer than he ever knew. And no matter how much of this he still has to process, that part? That’s pretty great.

It Is All an Illusion ❤️ [Sei]
In which Sebastian and Mei face off in the arena...
@sebastian-morey
[tw -- burns, burn injury, description of burns, death]
MEI: The cornucopia glinted bright and Mei smiled when she saw it. The sands beneath it were dyed with blood, but it looked more or less undisturbed otherwise. The bodies were gone and so was all the supplies. But no one had returned. Not until Mei stepped foot on it. She crossed over the water carefully, staying alert, but leaned against the cool metal, in the shade. This would be a good place to camp.
That was until she heard the crash of the wave and saw the waters around her swell, lapping up over the beach before they disappeared again. And with it—delivered a little gift.
Mei smirked. This was going to be good. She could play with her food before she murdered it.
“Seb!” A voice called that was not Mei’s own as she pulled an illusion from behind the cornucopia, right in the path of the man.
“Hey, Sixxer,” she purred as she held her battle axe to the pretty Victor’s throat.
“The Capitol sent me a gift.”
SEBASTIAN: Sebastian was soaking fucking wet - still hacking up water from his lungs and trying to get the previous events out of his head. He didn't want to think about them anymore. There were already too many experiences and too many horrors that plagued his mind.
They never said this would be easy - but no one ever talked about the psychological toll it would take on you either. Then again, he should have known. There was a glint in Gem's eyes that changed ever since he'd gone to the games. He'd been different. Changed and now he--
....was here?
Gaze snapped up quickly at the sound of his younger brother's voice, his footing even more unsteady as he sped up his uneven gait. "G-...Gemmy?" He called out uncertainly (maybe he'd started going nuts?) But then another voice - right as Sebastian's gaze finally found his brother.
Standing with a blade to his neck.
His heart clenched, and Sebastian felt his entire mouth run dry. This wasn't possible. Gem shouldn't be here. Not with the fucking Career! But... - He'd won his games in two days. He'd killed them all. Made for a boring show... Was--... was this his punishment? His hands burned hot - the flame beneath his skin itching to get out as he set his jaw.
"A gift? Are you out of your fuckin' mind? Let him go." He warned - hoping his tone carried more strength than he felt as his gaze slipped back to Gem.
MEI: Mei smirked.
Her heart was thrumming in her ears, but she knew that she could kill this boy from Six and then everyone would laud her for killing the Victor's brother. She'd be showered in gifts tomorrow morning, if she could only last the day after this. Maybe she'd even return to the Careers to share her spoils. If only to stay on their good side one more day.
The boy--Seb--was far enough away that he couldn't see Mei's hand tremble where it held the axe to his fake brother's throat.
"Mmm, no. I don't think so," Mei said with a shrug of her shoulders. She had to concentrate to keep the illusion up. But she made it struggle like a puppet on a string.
"Don't listen to her, Seb," pleaded the puppet.
SEBASTIAN: What do I do?
What do I do?!
For all the stupid advice, the tips, the help he'd received in all of this, he'd never been prepared to deal with this. With.. with his brother here as a pawn in some Career's fun little game. Hostage negotiation wasn't a part of the training stations.
Sebastian's breath came out as unsteadily as the shift in his weight, desperation painting across his brow as he shook his head lightly back at his brother. His hand shifted slightly - reaching towards the hilt of his sword as he took another half step forward. It wasn't much. He didn't want it to be. Seb didn't want to give this woman (she was crazy, he was sure) reason to put any more pressure against his brother's throat.
"...W-...What do you want." He said then, gaze quickly slipping between the two as his other hand raised in a careful calming gesture. "...Food? My weapons? What do you want? He's not a part of this. Killing him doesn't---" He couldn't stop the way his voice cracked around those words "---doesn't help you win. It doesn't help you!"
MEI: They've gotten to the begging. That was quick. Not that Mei was particularly surprised. The people from Six were always so weak willed. Even the brother had been a coward. Burned down the arena in such a short time. So boring. So cowardly. They had no backbones whatsoever. Even when they got hits in, they ran away. They never finished the job.
Mei would.
Just had to get him close enough.
"I think a life for a life makes sense, right, Gemmy?" she cooed at the Victor, who was from her own memory which meant shiny and pretty in the lights of the Capitol. She tried to muss his hair some, put some dirt on his high cheekbones but--it was hard to imagine such a thing while keeping him alive.
"Just let her kill me," said the apparition, struggling again. Mei let her axe knick the edge of his neck, a little trickle of blood sliding into his shirt.
SEBASTIAN: A life for a life.
Sebastian swallowed hard at the offer, his heart thumping so loud in his chest he was convinced it was going to break right through right now. End the problem here and now by just keeling over dead from the stress and fear of it all.
God, it wasn't fair.
"Gem! N-.. No!" He cried, letting himself jerk forward a bit more still as both hands raised now - gaze following that trail of blood that seeped into the worn fabric. "Stop. Stop." Sebastian pleaded lightly, another step forward - another glance towards his brother.
Think, Sebastian.
His hands stayed up for a moment as he caught his brother's gaze, though they made what looked like a small dismissive gesture as they dropped lower again in a means of surrender. Though in reality, he knew Gem would have caught the sign for go as his hands shifted. Would have known he was looking to make a move.
"Alright. Alright! A-..A life for ..for a life. I--.. Fine. J-...Just let him go. Please." Another step. Another small raise of his hands to show he was unarmed.
The flame still burning under his skin. Waiting.
He just had to get closer.
MEI: Mei shuffled forward as Sebastian did. She didn't think this would actually work. It meant she would have to be fast. Dart forward, slash him across the throat. She only had one shot. Her concentration couldn't be on two things at once. As soon as she moved, the illusion would disappear and the Sixxer would catch on.
Though, she could still probably best him.
One--Seb kicked up sand as he walked closer.
Two--Mei shifted onto one foot, twisting her grip on the axe.
Three--She shoved the illusion away and took a powerful, backhanded swing, right at the man's head with a battle cry.
SEBASTIAN: He didn't this would actually work - it just meant he needed to be fast.
Catch her off guard, push forward and hope he was as familiar with fire as he thought he was. He could pull Gem away while she was recovering and he knew his brother would know what to do once he had his bearings. All he had to do w——
It all happened too fast. Mei shoved Gem away - and he seemed to vanish in thin air, melting away into the background as it occurred to Sebastian that he hadn't been there at all. But there was no time to consider that. Not when the glint of the axe was swinging towards him.
Two more things happened at once:
One, his body jerked in reaction, dropping back and away from the swipe, even as he felt a sear of pain slice across his features. Not quite quick enough to avoid injury, but enough to avoid the fatal blow
— and two, he reacted without thought. Like a cornered animal.
Fire shot from his arms, scorching down his limbs and extending out towards Mei in a giant flame as his back hit the ground - water splashing up and sizzling against the bright flare before it faded out just as quickly, a smokey haze left behind as blood dripped into the shallow water beneath him from his brow.
MEI: Mei had been thinking about the future. This whole time, she had a plan in her mind.
It never seemed to work out the way she expected, but having that plan helped her. And, of course, the plan always ended with winning. With surviving. Getting back to her mom and dad and sisters. Becoming famous. Sponsoring a perfume bottle that smelt of rich, succulent plums.
The plan did not include this asshole shooting a wall of flame at her like a flamethrower. She screeched and dodged out of the way of the flame. Her heart beating faster. The heat of the flames scorched at her, burning the sand under her feet and turning it slippery as glass. It licked at her bare torso, turning it red and pink all over.
Her hand clutched at her side.
"How?" she panted, but she knew how.
Fey's.
Suddenly, she felt unsteady. She was not the only one being favored. Her confidence wavered but she raised her axe again and darted forward. She had always been fast. It had always been her strong suit. Raising it above her head, she moved quickly, bringing it down to try and slash at Seb's side. @Laurho
SEBASTIAN: He tried not to waste time, shoving himself back in the water as he felt the warmth flushing down against his face. It made him want to panic - but there wouldn't be time for that. Not if he wanted to live. Time to panic would come later. ...hopefully.
"...S-..same as you." He mumbled back - unsure why he'd even dignified her with a response. It very well could have been the last thing he ever said.
For a moment, it was like time stopped. Sebastian seemed to watch in slow motion as the woman adjusted her footing - the axe raising above her head. Poised and ready for the attack. Perhaps...it was because he was going to die. Maybe it...was a sign. He'd see it coming and think of all the ways he could stop it but it was inevitable...wasn't it?
But he had to fight. He promised he would try. It wasn't a death sentence - and he still had the best weapon in the game. Fey's alone was one thing... but there was something more important.
Experience.
His eyes squeezed tightly closed as his hands raised again - almost as if he were about to protect himself from the blow as his entire frame shifted sideways. A last ditch effort to dodge her axe as he felt the heat explode from around his skin. Hot flame erupted from his finger tips - shooting up like a hose towards his target and burning bright against the evening sun.
It didn't stop the scared cry that slipped from his lips as he tried to concentrate everything on simply lighting up as much as he could, his entire body bracing for that moment when the axe would break through his defenses and finally land.
MEI: For a moment, Mei felt nothing at all except the heat. It burst bright and intense all around her. Her vision was full of it. She was disoriented, blinded. It was as if the sun had exploded.
The searing pain came a moment later and she couldn't help the scream that ripped from her throat. And then another. The axe dropped uselessly from her hand as she raised her arms on instinct to try and shield her face from the burn of it.
It was too late though. The flames had already made quick work of her flesh, melting it like candle wax. Her long, black hair combusted into dust. All she could do was scream as the flames engulfed one side of her. They licked lovingly against her exposed torso, bubbling it like the tea on the stove that her sister always made at home. Her scream whistled like the tea pot.
She fell to her knees as the flames vanished, her whole body trembling from the shock. Her body pitched forward into the sand, the grains embedding in her liquid flesh. She groaned hoarsely, before managing, with the last bit of her adrenaline to push herself up onto her side and roll over onto her back.
SEBASTIAN: The screams were his first indication that whatever he'd done worked. The second was the lack of another blow to his body. Though honestly? Neither of them actually brought him that much comfort.
If anything the scream haunted him - made his eyes squeeze tighter as his fingers shook, curling gently into fists as the flames petered out. For a few moments? The sounds of pain - the smell of burning flesh, hair and god knows whatever else. It made bile rise in his throat as a shaky breath ripped from his lips like a sob.
It was over.
His eyes peeked open then, slowly, and Sebastian had to remind himself to swipe blood from his features - staining the back of his hand a bright red as his gaze finally landed on the Career's body. It was over.
But... no canon had sounded.
Sebastian swallowed thickly - almost afraid to move as he forced himself to look at her body. The... horrified mangle of skin and ---... Again, bile rose quickly before he swallowed it back down, pushing himself to his knees with a gasped breath. He needed to leave. She'd die or...be found by the Careers and helped with whatever stockpile. He just had to leave.
But he couldn't. Sebastian couldn't bring himself to - instead only crawling through the shallow water, fingers lodging in sand before he found himself beside her. God, how was she still fucking alive?
"M-....Mei?"
MEI: There was nothing but the pain. Her whole world had become it. Who was she? Nothing but another Capitol punishment. Another Capitol toy. Someone who would be forgotten tomorrow, when there was more blood to be spilt.
Her breath rasped, happening only on instinct. She stared up at the sky but one of her eyes wasn't working properly. It rolled in her head toward the sound of a voice. Her name. Her name was Mei and it meant "beautiful". Her fingers curled in the sand, but the pieces were cold and slipped through her fingers.
"Seb?" she rasped, trying to find his face through the blur of her vision. "It hurts," she whimpered.
SEBASTIAN: Oh god.
Oh god. Oh god what did he do? Guilt clenched in his heart as he shifted forward a bit more, hands swiping into the water to clean them frantically before he reached out - but he stopped just short of touching her.
How could he? He didn't want to hurt her anymore than he already had. Please. Sarina's voice in his head made him flinch. An eerie reminder of the girl's last wishes before he'd taken her life - and here again he was back in that situation. It'd been life or death! He hadn't had a choice but - ...it didn't feel real right now. It couldn't feel right when he was staring at Mei's mangled, scorned body laid in front of him. Blood dripped from his chin, landing upon the back of his palm once more as he bit down on a short sob.
"I--... I..I'm s-..I'm sorry." He found the will to say, swallowing back again as warmth pooled by his eyes. This time however it wasn't the warmth of his own blood. "I--...It'...it's..it's okay. It's..it's okay. I-.. You're okay." No she wasn't. No she wasn't, Sebastian. You did this.
Hesitantly - and as softly as Sebastian had ever managed to do something, the man's hand reached out - slipping his fingers gently into her own with a small squeeze. She was so... young. She was practically a child. "I-..you're..you're fine.."
MEI: Mei suddenly felt very cold. The heat had seeped out of her quickly. Every shiver sent another shot of pain through her. Her wild eye found the boy's dark ones. There was a bright red gash on his cheek. She remembered blood blooming on Dot's side. She remembered red seeping into Rose's pants. Hera's body thrashing under her.
"I'm sorry too," Mei said and a sob burst out of her mouth, causing her whole body to convulse once, her fingers squeezing at Seb's. The strength in her good hand surprisingly strong still. Her heart beat was fluttering fast in her chest.
Mei had had a plan but--there was so much pain, she couldn't remember it.
"I'm scared," she admitted. She had been scared this whole time. It almost felt like a relief to admit it to someone.
SEBASTIAN: Sebastian bit down roughly on his lip to stop himself from sobbing too - tasting the metallic twinge on his tongue as he gaze the girl's hand another squeeze. It felt in time with the squeeze in his chest, falling into the pit of dread he held in his stomach.
She...she was dying. No - not dying. She was suffering and it was his fault.
"Y-...You don't..you don't have to be scared." He managed, just barely - letting his opposite hand reach out towards her features. Though again, he hesitated - hovering above her skin before he shifted just enough to avoid the side of her face where the flesh had charred into something almost unrecognizable. His calloused thumb brushed softly against her skin - surprised almost by how soft it was. Never a victim of harsh conditions (at least...until now).
"I'm right here...Y-...You're not a-alone, okay? I--.. You don't have t'be scared. It's..it's okay." And for a moment - it almost felt like it could have been. Like if he just imagined, the stupid arena around them would disappear - and he'd be back home. With the comfort of his family, and she would be too. That it would be okay. For both of them.
MEI: Seb touched her skin and Mei closed her eyes. She thought of her mother, touching her cheek before pulling her hair back into a bun, getting her ready for her ballet lessons. She thought of her father, cuffing her on the chin, saying that's my girl whenever she brought home a trophy. She thought of her sisters and how they kissed her cheeks as soft as raindrops. And how she loved them and missed them and wanted to go home.
When she opened her eyes, the arena had dropped away. There was a soft pink light and she was in her bed at home. Seb was in the white wicker chair she used to curl up in to do her homework. It had been pulled close to the bed, so that he could still hold her hand. Around her, her mother and father smiled and her sisters held onto each other.
And as she looked at this lovely scene, more people joined in. First, the Victor--the brother--curling his hand around Seb's shoulder. Then others. People she didn't recognize. But they all smiled and Mei smiled too. The good side of her face curled up to expose those pretty teeth of hers.
"I'm not alone," she rasped, her breathing was coming more shallow, more sharp. "A-and neither are you."
Mei took another breath and then let it go. The grip on Seb's hand loosened. The illusion faded.
In the distance, a canon fired.
SEBASTIAN: The grip on Mei's hand got stronger, and he wished so desperately that he could do something. That he could take it all back. She was just a kid. She was a child, and he'd forced this pain upon her. The Capitol had forced this upon her. She didn't deserve it. None of them had. A sob broke through his lips, and he tried his best to stop it. But the emotion overcame him, even as he tried to swipe away his tears against his shoulder. His eyes closed against stained fabric - and when they opened?
He was sitting against Mei's bedside - his brothers and strangers alike lined up around them. A.. comforting little scene. A harsh but welcomed comparison to the blood soaked arena they'd left. A... a fitting place to die. Surrounded by family. Loved ones.
She wasn't alone. She wouldn't be alone.
Maybe then she...she could at least have that peace. Maybe then...she'd finally be at rest.
The pressure around his fingers faded - and with it, did the one against his shoulder, both leaving him with a similar clench in his gut.
When his gaze lifted once more, Sebastian found himself back in the arena. Mei's now lifeless corpse still beside him... but other than that...
He was once again alone.
