it's weird how some families have so much physical history and documentation going back generations and memoirs written by their great-great-grandfather etc and like in my family. i dont even know my grandfather's name. nobody does lol we dont know his identity. like how can some families be so well documented and then in other cultures its basically impossible to find that history especially if it was destroyed by colonization or war
#it seems like this is a particularly american thing tho idk why they always have like the full name and history#of like their great great great great grandmother's second cousin or whatever#i tried looking into my family records once online and literally the only thing in existence is a record of my fathers birth in the 1960s#in a london newspaper#i guess its cool to know the exact hospital he was born at cuz i didnt before but like i wouldnt have even been able to find that#if i didnt know some extremely specific information already#its just weird hearing about other families and how much they know!!!!!#txt

the writers of headlines as "The Kensington Horror," or "The Stabbing Woman," or "The Woman in Black."
I thought it would be interesting to see what kind of article people actually wrote under these headlines, so I had a look in the British Newspaper Archive... and now I'm wondering if I might have stumbled on to the actual newspaper that Bram Stoker was reading when he wrote this?
These articles were both in the Hampshire Telegraph & Sussex Chronicle from Saturday the 8th of December, 1894. Link here but you need to sign up for three free views (and it locked me out after two, it's merest chance that this is the first newspaper I opened).
These were both on the same page, p2. There's no sign of 'The Stabbing Woman', which could be pure invention. Or the whole thing could just be a coincidence.
#dracula daily#i think text was often reused between different papers#so someone with full british newspaper archives access might want to see if these also appeared in a london paper#that stoker might be more likely to have read

you know how it is. you become roommates with a guy you hate, live with him for several months, slowly transform into a giant celestial alien monster while steadily losing your humanity and sense of identity to the point where you can barely stand your own skin much less your own name, get way too attached to him, propose to him as a scheme to get notability points, and then now all of a sudden you're Literally Legally Gay Married and you've kissed him and he's wearing the mark of your marriage on his hand at all times and all you can think about is how right it feels to own him. and also you want to bite his neck a lot. just normal platonic heterosexual activities to do with your worstie amiright
#it is probably assumed to be romantic in-universe#neither of them are shy about it being a ruse but like. in terms of what the newspapers publish and what general society probably knows#they're just lovers in a dysfunctional honeymoon period#it's great. it's magical. the scoundrel parades caeru everywhere and makes a big show of pretending like they're smitten with him#just to get attention + keep up the lie#and he wants to Die#yin-thoughts#fallen london

another observation from A Study in Scarlet: after the case has concluded, Watson reads in a newspaper (the Echo)...
"If the case has had no other effect, it, at least, brings out in the most striking manner the efficiency of our detective police force, and will serve as a lesson to all foreigners that they will do wisely to settle their feuds at home, and not to carry them on to British soil."
RICH STATEMENT from a country who brought countless """feuds""" to any foreign soil they could reach!!! bold declarations from the colonizers i'd say!!!!!
#that newspapers pop up twice in STUD is actually great#i wish doyle had kept up the practice throughout his other stories#i know holmes directly uses the media and comments on doing so in one but#that watson reads of the speculation before holmes has solved the case and then after makes for nice bookends#and puts them and the case into a larger societal context#it's good world building#if 1880's london were a fictional world#i get that holmes's lack of fame was a big part of STUD and the papers exist to drive home the fact that the public is ignorant#and the police get all the credit every time#but idk i just wish he'd used the device more#a study in scarlet#acd holmes#sherlock holmes#john watson

The Café (Café Conte, London)
Artist: Frank Graham Bell (British, 1910–1943)
Date: 1937–1938
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester, England
Description
An everyday scene of a crowded small café, viewed from the interior, looking down the café counter towards a window. A woman in overalls stands behind the counter wiping crockery. In the foreground, two customers stand in front of the counter, a man with a cup of tea, another reading a newspaper. There is a glass cabinet on top of the counter containing cakes. More customers can be seen in the background through the archway and out of the window, a street is just visible. The figures depicted are: (from left) the cafe proprietor's daughter, Geoffrey Tibble (seen through counter case), Victor Pasmore, Claude Rogers, Igor Anrep, and William Coldstream.

oc introduction time!!
not my fallen london pc, but a side character that they met during their time at court.
Arlen Blank, the Cantankerous Couturier
art done by the amazing @larkliing, he's a character and a half entirely.
Blank fled to the Neath at eighteen, quickly adapting to the more chaotic lifestyle with ease. He chose a name, chose a face, and built himself up from there. While he gained plenty of scars during his first few years, he also made a name for himself among the Bohemians, launching himself into the court with a feverish energy. The Enervated Etymologist met him during his height, when he designed them a coat made of crystalized tears. He was banished a year later, after causing an uproar with one of his more unique designs that involved a far too pointed poke towards the royal children's monstrous nature.
He went missing for a year after the banishment, returning with a baby, an adopted daughter, and a heavy distrust of devils. He finally settled after, diverting any questions about his time missing with a sharp word or a veiled threat. He now spends his time writing scathing critiques of society's fashion for the Enervated Etymologist's newspaper. While it takes quite a bit to convince him to design nowadays, one can do it with the right persuasion.
After a mishap with an enemy well versed in the shapeling arts, Blank now has multiple sets of eyes, as well as stained glass panels trailing up his arms and back from an unfortunate fusion with a cathedral window.
After his courtly banishment, he has grown the tendency for more shocking styles, near carnival in nature, with makeup or fashion that looks more at home at Miss Plenty's than the polite streets of London.

ariel's nadir expedition with the Neath's Worst Couple was very interesting, in a way. of course that storyline is started with the secular missionary asking him to find her runaway husband, and ariel does try! but he's not an investigator so it takes a long time. and then when he finds the man, ariel finds him handsome and compelling and sweet. he definitely got to get to know the firebrand much better than he did the missionary, because he's not employed by the firebrand, and they can spend time together and grow their relationship together
and then the nadir comes into play and the missionary meets with ariel and the firebrand and sees that the man she hired to FIND HER HUSBAND is holding her husband's hand a fair bit and isn't against her but is definitely for the firebrand. and then they start looking for the nadir and ariel KEEPS HOLDING HER HUSBAND'S HAND AND ENCOURAGING HIM AND THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE SOMETHING GOING ON TOGETHER NOW. and she just has to third wheel this whole thing while still NOT GETTING ALONG WITH THE FIREBRAND. awful expedition guys. this isn't even getting into the action that i can't even tell if it's referring to sex cause i never got the card and the wiki is so abridged, but the possible card where you "slip away for an intimate moment" with the firebrand (and i want this text someone share the text with me)
#and then ariel puts him on his newspaper (basically buys the firebrand theater tickets because the firebrand enjoys that)#and then he marries the man (i dont think he ever divorced the missionary)#my text#fallen london#ariel christy#the secular missionary#the revolutionary firebrand#ariel x firebrand
