you know, i think i've figured out why i can't read brokeback mountain au fics.

its bc annie proulx is an author who writes as much about characters as she does about the specific settings she puts them in. they're so deeply rooted to their envionments, and so understanding the setting is crucial to understanding who her characters are.

imo, you cannot remove ennis and jack from 1963-1983 era rural wyoming and texas. otherwise, it all falls apart and no longer do the characters really make much sense.

Since the modern Machete and Vasco are reincarnations of their former selves, do you think they might occasionally experience remnants from their past lives in the form of things like vague memories/dreams or feelings that they can't quite explain?

Such as how maybe Machete wouldn't be able to watch stabbing scenes in shows/movies without getting a faint ache in his chest, or an imaginary metallic taste in his mouth. Nu'Ko'yo - Place of Reeds "Big City"

The word "Nu'Ko'yo" exists in other Mexican languages!!, In Nahuatl it is called "Tollan"!!

It is supposed to be a metaphor for how people in these cities become packed together and near each other. Not unlike wetlands plants and cattails.

It can refer to many cities in precolumbian mesoamerica, many of them with rich and colorful histories. Many of them full of migrants from all over Mexico and beyond.

Cities now are the same, all pushing people closely together in a furious broth of connection.

So why are they full of systemic injustices.

In reality Soap is constantly holding himself back, with dangerous smiles and tempting words. He hardly ever shows his true colors or motives. Cunning, like a fox.

And what people, in their... Closed up minds don't see yet is that- It's not Soap McTavish that needs restrain (he still bites) or a hand on his shoulder-

The Ghost, who looks calm collected in it's all imposing figure is nothing but a weapon at ready for Johnny to use.

It reminds Simon of the depths of the ocean. Dangerous, deadly magnetic and so so beautiful. John smiles up at him and he can't contain himself but to kiss his knuckles. Worshipping.

Because the truth is:

At the civilization of the future. You sit in a grass, in a forest. Relaxing. Having a free time. And look at two such a big buildings. So, there are even more of them there. But these two are in a photography. High buildings. Even, hard to say, how much floors it has. Maybe, it is possible to flight straight in space, having such buildings.

Maybe, in this building, a very clever engineers are working. And they make a calculations, writes programs. And, as a real thing, they plan a space flight, maybe, something like that. At a real space ship. And in the evening, after working day, they run to the grass. To sit and drink a tea.

And from a hill it is opens such a view. Almost, like two rockets. Which are rising to space. So, things like this, really cool things, you cannot find, maybe for everyday! And also, a cool weather - very summer!

It's always interesting to hear about people's weird/unexpected "alternate life paths". Like, something that you could have done with your life, a job you almost took, a school you almost went to, etc - that was still actually realistic enough that it could have happened, but NOW it seems to not suit your current personality.

Like for example, I currently hate advertising (how manipulative it is, brands trying to be 'relatable', social media amplifying it to an obnoxious extreme, etc.) so much that even seeing a little ad before a youtube video is grating to even witness, but there was a point in time where I was genuinely seriously considering going into marketing/making commercials as a career lol. Or like, I have a relative who was very inclined to be a pastor when they were younger, even though today they're a super strong atheist, etc. etc.
